VACCINE INCENTIVE MEANS NEW CAR
St. John’s Episcopal Hospital announced that it has surpassed the reported overall Queen’s County hospital worker COVID-19 vaccination percentage of 67% by implementing a staff vaccination incentive program. A contest was held in which vaccinated staff were automatically entered into a raffle to win a new car. The hospital’s Far Rockaway zip code of 11691 has the lowest percentage of those vaccinated against COV-
ID-19 in all of New York City. By vaccinating its staff, the hospital is enhancing the health and well-being of its staff, patients, and community as over 26% of staff members live in the Rockaways. Christopher J. Parker, Executive Vice President, said, “I am happy to say, after implementing the car raffle contest, St. John’s has climbed above Continued on page 5

Rocco’s Overcomes Challenges By Katie McFadden
Four months in, business has been good for new Italian eatery, Rocco’s of Roc Beach. There have been plenty of obstacles along the way, but Rocco’s is quickly finding its place as a community staple. Since opening at the end of April, Rocco’s has made everyone feel welcome to the family. From Rockaway to Broad Channel, and even places known for their Italian food, like Howard Beach and Brooklyn, plus ferrygoers from Manhattan, everyone is giving this new hot spot on Rockaway Beach Boulevard a try. “We really appreciate the community. Everyone has been very supportive. Every day since we’ve been open, we’ve been packed every single night,” one owner, Louis, said. For this reason, reservations are highly recommended. After all, they have a superstar chef at the helm. Straight from Italy, the award-winning
Chef Bruno Milone, who has been featured on Italian culture TV show “Brindiamo!”, draws a following in whatever kitchen he’s behind. Chef Bruno is known for his signatures—linguini and white clam sauce, rigatoni Bolognese and his melt-in-your-mouth meatballs that are cooked for eight hours. “We probably sell 200 meatball orders a day,” Louis said. And Chef Bruno takes his food, and any criticism, seriously. So much so that there have been instances where people who have left harsh online reviews about the food, have been personally invited back by the chef to sit with him and give it another try. But those occasions are rare. The food speaks for itself. Since opening, Rocco’s has had to overcome some challenges, including those out of their hands. “We’ve had five blackouts here,” Louis said. “PSEG turned off the electricity on a busy Wednesday night. With a packed place, we had no

POS system, no Ansul system... we had to close. We apologize to anybody that was affected. We try to do our best, but unfortunately we’re at the mercy of PSEG.” They’ve also had days where the water was turned off due to water main work on the block. They’ve also had to change some things. When Rocco’s first opened, they launched a reward point system so regular customers could get discounts, but after some quickly took advantage and rigged the system, they ultimately had to do away with it. However, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of launching a new business and get into a flow, they have expanded. They now offer daily lunch hours from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. During this time, customers can take advantage of the full menu, including Rocco’s sandwich offerings like their out-ofthis-world, footlong chicken parm hero. They also now offer delivery during weekdays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., from Arverne to Breezy Point. They’re keeping delivery hours limited so they can focus on their inhouse demand. From the bread to the burrata to even the pasta, everything is made completely fresh. “We don’t want to take away from in-house dining for our guests that dine in with us because we’d have to pre-make our food. At Rocco’s, everything is made to order,” Louis said. But lucky for them, most people are coming right to Rocco’s. “We do offer pickup and we probably do 200 to 250 orders for pickup at night on the week-
end. It’s crazy here with just the pickup business. There’s no reason to do delivery at night. We get people from all over coming here to pick up. It’s crazy but it’s a good thing,” Louis said. But there are perks to eating in house. Most importantly, customers get to experience the above-and-beyond customer service from the friendly staff. “We always want to make sure everybody is happy, and 100% customer satisfaction is our main goal. When you walk through that door, you’re greeted like family. You’ll be greeted two or three times by different staff before you’re seated. Our staff is so nice and very attentive,” Louis said. If it’s your birthday, you can celebrate in-house with a massive sparkler on your dessert of choice while the whole restaurant claps. For a refreshing summer treat, sip a frozen frosé or limoncello. And on Wednesdays and Fridays, you’re in for another treat with Rocco’s DJ nights. On Wednesdays, DJ Nicky G spins and on Fridays, Rockawave DJs starts the party. No matter how you choose to try Rocco’s, if you haven’t tried it yet, you’re missing out! Rocco’s is located at 115-10 Rockaway Beach Blvd and open Tuesday-Sunday. If dining in, make sure to make a reservation by calling 718-799-5050. If ordering online, Rocco’s is currently offering 10% off online orders for lunch. Use code: TIMES or LUNCH for your discount. From Bone Marrow Donor to Best Man By Katie McFadden
In 1992, George Johnson’s buddy back from their lifeguarding days, NYPD officer Timmy Coyne, asked him if he wouldn’t mind being tested for a bone marrow drive for a friend who had leukemia. Rockaway resident Johnson, an FDNY firefighter, was on duty, but showed up with a couple guys on the rig to be tested. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a match. But this story doesn’t end there. Four years later, in 1996, Johnson gets a call. He was a match for someone else. “All they tell you is it’s a four-yearold boy with leukemia,” Johnson said. Upon hearing this, without hesitation, he agreed to be tested again. It was a go. Johnson was still a match. A series of further testing, and a major waiting game began for a family in Kentucky. “He was 18 months old when he was diagnosed with leukemia,” Stacey Nichols, the mother of Forrest Nichols said. “He went through two and a half years of chemo and radiation. He was in remission but six months later, he relapsed. Our only option was a bone marrow transplant. That’s when they tested the whole family. None of us were a match. We had a bone marrow drive in our community. Six hundred people came out. None of them were a match. They entered the Bone Marrow Registry. All we were told was there was a possible match in New York,” she recalled. Johnson decided to push forward and go through the process to donate his marrow in August 1996. Johnson says for the procedure, doctors put him under anesthesia to knock him out, and with a large needle, went into his hip bone to extract the marrow. “Everybody says it’s so painful. What I tell everybody is that it felt like I got hit in the lower back with a Dave Kingman homerun swing. But in all honesty, I’ve been more beat up after a good Rockaway rugby game than I was doing that,” Johnson said. “When you think about what

it does, how could you possibly say no? It was a no brainer. They said this kid is going to die without you. How do you say no?” In Kentucky, a little boy with leukemia received the bone marrow from the firefighter in New York. And prayers began. “The fear you have is rejection. It’s either going to take or it’s not and if it doesn’t, you have a horrible reaction. It will attack every organ. We heard horror stories,” Nichols said. But for Forrest Nichols, that wasn’t the case. “Forrest took it well. He was in isolation for six weeks, but we started seeing his numbers go up. He was reproducing platelets and red cells and white cells. We knew then that this marrow was doing what it needed to do,” Nich-
ols said. They just didn’t know who it belonged to. A year later, after the transplant was successful, they start to learn. “I get a thing in the mail saying it’s been a year, the patient is doing well, is it ok if we release your information to the family?” Johnson said. He agreed. “One day I’m working in the firehouse, and I get a call and I hear this southern accent and thought, what’s going on here? A man said he wanted to thank me for saving his son’s life,” Johnson recalled. That call was from Forrest’s father, Mike. “There isn’t always survival in every case of a transplant. Whether our son made it or not, we wanted to know the individual that donated. We just can’t thank God enough
for him. We are forever in his debt because God found him, and God made him willing to do this and God protected him. I give all the glory to God because we prayed for George,” Nichols said. Johnson and the Nichols’ agreed to meet. The Blood Center of New York caught wind of the story and brought the Nichols family to New York. “It was around Thanksgiving 1997. They flew the family here to meet me at the firehouse and there was this whole big production,” Johnson said. Everyone, from Johnson to the Nichols’ to TV stations and even Mayor Rudy Giuliani gathered at Engine 255/ Ladder 157 on Rogers Avenue in Brooklyn for the introduction. “We met the mayor, and he was so gracious and kind and told us what he was going to do and there comes George down the fire pole, and he was as surprised as us. He had no idea all those people would be there. They kept it from us. That’s how we met,” Nichols said. It was at that meeting that George Johnson got to meet Forrest Nichols, the then five-year-old boy whose body held his lifesaving bone marrow. A whirlwind trip ensued. “After the ceremony at the firehouse, they sent us to the Radio City Christmas show and we went out on the fire boat and the NY Blood Center held a function at the Waldorf Astoria. They made a big deal of it,” Johnson said. But it has been the continuous encounters that the Johnson and Nichols families have had, that have meant even more. Their relationship didn’t end that week in New York City. “A year later, the family flew me out to Munfordville, KY, where they live, and we all went to the Kentucky Derby together in 1998,” Johnson said. Johnson’s contribution to one of their own meant a great deal to the folks of the small town of Munfordville. They never forgot about the New York firefighter. “When 9/11 happened, everyone in KenContinued on page 9

2021. Arrangements are as follows: viewing Monday 4-7 p.m. at Grace Funeral Chapel, 607 North Conduit Avenue, Brooklyn. Funeral is also at Grace Funeral Chapel, Tuesday, August 17, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. ***** Riis Park is in shambles. Photos on Pages 14-15-16 show just how run down it is. This is not about maintenance. Seasonal and permanent staff do what they can. It’s the structural state of things. Part of the neglect is because Riis doesn’t have a real constituency to demand better. Visitors are mostly from Brooklyn and other parts of the city. They come, they go, and maybe they don’t come back. Or they do, but how often? They’re unlikely to contact elected officials about the sorry state of the place. Rockaway residents, with their own beach, find there’s no reason to go. And if they want, where do they complain? Who is in charge? We say start with Senator Charles Schumer. He bikes through there; he knows the place. He’s shepherding a huge
infrastructure bill to be signed by President Biden. Get on it, Chuck. ***** Update on the yacht in the bay. As we mentioned last week, a yacht anchored in the middle of the bay off Beach 132nd Street caught the attention of quite a few people. Our marine reporters were unavailable to sail out and investigate but after some groundside sleuthing, we found out the vessel owner is Kevin Moriarty, cousin to Bernadette Mahoney, Carolyn Coogan and Stacey Tubridy. Reports say he brought his yacht so his cousins could enjoy a day of fun. It was loaded with all sorts of water toys and a good time was had by all. ***** The Shorebird Festival is Saturday. August is the perfect time to explore the diversity and abundance of NYC's shorebirds, particularly at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. This Saturday, August 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the 16th Annual Shorebird Fes-

With expert guides and family-friendly walks, this festival will be fun for everyone. Please register so that the American Littoral Society, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, and National Parks Service can plan and send updates. The link for registration and more information is: https://bit.ly/ shorebirdjamaicabay ***** The east end of the Rockaway peninsula has a low vaccination rate. Mayoral candidate Eric Adams and others came out last week to promote vaccination. News being what it is, the failures and horror stories get the headlines but expecting 100% safety is impossible; no medical product or intervention, from aspirin to brain surgery, is ever 100% safe. Science shows getting the Covid vaccine outweighs the risks. Mumps, measles, chicken pox, polio. Vaccines work!

FROM BONE MAR ROW DONOR TO BEST MAN Continued from Page 7 tucky was frantic to find out if I was still alive. They were calling and couldn’t get through,” Johnson said. But two days later, they got their sign. George Johnson is one of the three firefighters who raised an American flag above the rubble of the World Trade Center. A photo of that scene made newspapers across the world. Kentucky knew Johnson was okay. And then they did what they could to help. “The town did a boot stop. There’s one traffic light in the town of Munfordville. They parked right there and had a fireman’s boot up and cars stopped and donated money. They collected $16,000,” Johnson said. The town also sent a contingent of nine of their own firefighters to bring the money to Johnson’s firehouse and help where they could. “We donated the money to the family of my friend, Stevie Harrell, who was killed on 9/11. We got the firefighters discounted hotel rooms and brought them to Ground Zero and then they went back,” Johnson said. A month later, Johnson gets a call from the chief of the Munfordville Fire Department. “He says, ‘we want you to be the grand marshal of our Christmas parade in Munfordville,’” Johnson recalled. Humble as could be, Johnson turned down the offer of grand marshal but said he would come to the parade. After being told it was December 2, 2001, Johnson realized he couldn’t come as a buddy was getting married the previous day. “The chief says to me, ‘what if we change the date of the parade?’ I said, ‘absolutely not, I’ll just come next year.’ The next time I go into work, he calls me again and says ‘the parade is December 9. We’re gonna fly you and four buddies into Louisville and pick you up.’” That December, Johnson and four other firefighters flew to Kentucky and were greeted with southern hospitality, and a

night of country line dancing. The next day, they marched in the parade. “George says, ‘how long is this parade?’ I say 'well, ours is two blocks at most,’” Nichols recalled. “They start laughing. But when they saw the turnout for that two-block parade, they were blown away. The streets were packed.” “It was a cold, wet, miserable day, but everybody was lining the street, crying as we walked by,” Johnson said. “They took us to the steps of City Hall, the mayor gave us the keys to the city and 250 people waited in the cold rain to come up and shake our hands, give us kisses and hugs and thanks, picnic baskets with homemade jam and honey and barbecue sauce. It was really, really wonderful,” Johnson said. A few months later, Johnson repaid the favor. He invited the Nichols family to Rockaway so Forrest could march alongside him in the 2002 Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day parade. “They honored the local firemen that year and Forrest and his family marched with my firehouse,” Johnson said. And in 2004, the Nichols family was back. “They came to my wedding,” Johnson said. When Johnson married his bride, Peggy, Forrest, his brother, Stuart, Stacey, and his aunt and uncle were all in attendance. “They said it was the best wedding they had ever been to,” Nichols said of her boys. In all these years, the relationship between the Nichols and Johnson families has nev-
er waned. “They’ve been here twice, and I find my way into Munfordville here and there,” Johnson said, who often makes a trip down to his condo in Florida. He also wound up making an unexpected pitstop there in 2017 when he and John Carlin were on their way to bring supplies and help those hit hard by Hurricane Harvey in Houston. “We stopped in Lexington and were headed toward Nashville, and I see we’re going past Munfordville, so I said we had to stop. We met the Nichols family at this Mexican restaurant for lunch and as I pull into the parking lot, the warning lights went off. The car was overheating. We let it cool off and the Nichols’ connected us with their mechanic and we dropped it off and had lunch. An hour and a half later, the car was done, and they wouldn’t take any money for fixing it. Plus the mechanic donated $100 for us to bring to Houston,” Johnson said. Since then, Johnson and his wife made another stop in Munfordville while making their way down to Florida. Johnson says he, Forrest and the Nichols family continue to regularly text and call each other. Around Christmastime in 2020, Johnson says he was texting Mike Nichols and offered to help then 28-year-old Forrest buy a Christmas present for his girlfriend, Kayla. “He said, ‘I’m gonna let Forrest tell you what he’s getting.’ Forrest got on the phone and said, 'I'm gonna get Kayla an engagement ring for Christmas, and as long as I got you on the phone, I wanted to ask you if you’d be my best man,’” Johnson recalled. “I was completely blown away.” In May, Johnson attended the wedding of Forrest’s younger sister, Olivia, and came back a month later with his wife and own parents for Forrest’s big day. On Saturday, June 26, George Johnson stood beside the man whose life he saved 25 years earlier as he exchanged vows with his now wife, Kayla. “The night before the wedding, we’re at the rehearsal dinner and Forrest’s grandmother asks me, ‘Do you think there’s any other families that

have donated and received and been in this program that have bonded the way our families have?’ I thought about that a lot before the wedding,” Johnson said. “I wound up incorporating it into my toast. I would have to say, I don’t think so, because I feel like we’re not just friends. We’re family.” For the Nichols family, getting to see Forrest marry the girl of his dreams, with George by his side, drew up many emotions. “It’s hard to put into words. Your mind floods back to all of those years and obstacles that have been overcome and you just kind of see it culminate in this huge answered prayer,” Nichols said. “And you’re just overwhelmingly thankful and grateful for what George has done. My son didn’t think he would get married. He still has health issues and he said in the past, ‘For a girl to want me, she’s gonna have to accept me just like I am.’ They’re just so happy together and to see Kayla on one side and George on the other, you just thank God. “When we were going through this, we saw a lot of kids that didn’t make it through their therapy,” Nichols said. “It was just such a gift for the people who were there to see this wedding happen. After, someone that was there said to me, ‘I think that was the sweetest wedding I’ve ever been to.’ I said, ‘It really was, wasn’t it?’” If interested in becoming a bone marrow donor, check out BeTheMatch.org.

Delio’s Becomes Broad Channel’s New Hotspot By Katie McFadden
There’s truth to the saying that firefighters are great cooks. Usually, their fellow Bravest get to try each other’s culinary talents. But the Delios have brought their talents beyond their firehouses. They’re now serving up their delectable, tremendous, freshly made, sausage and pepper and philly cheesesteak heroes, smash burgers and beyond at Delio’s Food Truck in Broad Channel. The Delios grew up around good food. After all, they learned from the best—their parents. Brothers, Dominick Delio Jr. and Anthony Delio, say they learned how to cook from their mom, Antoinette, and their dad, Dominick Delio Sr. “Our mom is a good cook, but my dad really, really enjoys it,” Anthony Delio said. “One of his first lessons was—if you want to be a good cook, you have to love it.’” They took that lesson to heart, and when the brothers decided to give running a food truck a try, they enlisted the help of the man who knows best—their father. On June 23, the Delio family opened Delio’s Food Truck in a lot at 1817 Cross Bay Boulevard. The idea stemmed from Dominick Delio Jr. who first gained experience running a kitchen at a beach club in Atlantic Beach with his buddy, Joe Ganji. “I always knew this was something we could do,” Dom Jr. said. Having grown up learning how to cook, the brothers have been superstars in their FDNY firehouse kitchens in Queens. When Dom Jr. finally found a truck, it was go time. “I bought the truck before I had a spot,” Dom Jr. said. And he enlisted the help of his brother and father. “When Dom found the truck, he asked us to help him out and get involved as partners,” Anthony said. The truck needed a lot of work. “We ripped this truck apart,” Dom Jr. said. “For a month and a half, we redid the electric, put fridges in, new floors, cleaned everything out,” Anthony said. Fortunately for them, their father also knew someone with a spot for them to put it. Though
originally from Howard Beach, the family found a perfect spot just before the Cross Bay Bridge in Broad Channel, where Anthony now calls home. Since they’ve opened, Delio’s has been feeling the neighborly love. “When we got this spot, we wanted to attract the beach traffic, but it’s been everyone from Rockaway to Broad Channel to Howard Beach,” Dom Jr. said. “The community has been awesome. The neighborhood is coming like crazy,” Anthony said. “This has been my favorite part, meeting everyone,” Dom Jr. said. And it’s been busy from the start. “We’d always go to sausage and pepper trucks and most closed at 4 p.m., so we said we’ll be open ‘til 4. The first day we opened, we didn’t get out of here until 9 p.m.,” Dom Jr. said. Also offering a first responder discount, the truck has become a favorite for local police precincts, firehouses and sanitation garages. “They’ve all been very generous. We don’t know if it’s just because of the discount, but we’d like to think it’s more than
that,” Dom Jr. said. The food speaks for itself, and it has a lot to say. The heroes, the size of a newborn, easily catch one’s eye—and appetite. “We wanted to be known for having the biggest philly cheesesteak and sausage and pepper hero,” said Dom Sr., whose idea it was to go big. And at just $12 a hero, they’re a bargain. The Philly is Anthony’s special recipe that he usually makes at his firehouse. The sausage and peppers are Dom Sr.’s specialty. And Dom Jr. introduced the smash burger. “We cut the onions really thin and make the chop meat into quarter-pounders and smash them into the grill, so it gets a nice crust. The onions caramelize in the meat, and we add cheese to it, and everybody goes nuts for it,” Dom Jr. said. “Someone I worked with tried it and said that smash burger was one of the best burgers they’ve ever had,” Anthony said. They also offer hot dogs, corn dogs, knishes, corn fritters, fries, including their philly cheesesteak-topped fries, which is a meal itself, plus Italian ices to top it all off. Working around their firehouse schedules, the Delios rotate who mans the truck, while their father fills in when they need extra help. Joe Ganji and Madison Jackowski also help on the truck, while the Delio’s mother, Antoinette helps with some of the business aspects, Dom Jr.’s fiancé Tori helps run their social media and Anthony’s girlfriend, Brittany shows full support. “We’re all about
family here,” Dom Sr. said. That includes their customers. Like family does, the Delios like to bust each other’s chops. And Dom Sr. will do the same for customers. “If my dad doesn’t roast you, he doesn’t like you,” Dom Jr. said. They also sometimes get under each other’s skin. “Every day there’s an argument and a fight. My dad ‘quit’ three times in one day,” Anthony said. “People say we need a reality TV show. He’ll be busting chops, we’re all yelling at each other, but at the end of the day, it’s all good. It’s all family.” And though he quits frequently, there’s a reason Dom Sr. keeps coming back. “My son had a dream and he made it come true. I’m very proud of my boys. They’re great guys and they’re working their butts off,” Dom Sr. said. Delio’s is also a place where families feel welcome. Instead of just offering takeout, the Delios invite people to stay and enjoy their food. Their lot contains a few surfboard tables that they built themselves, picnic tables and even a porta potty for those who need it. They also welcome people to BYOB. And soon they hope to start having Friday Family Nights, where customers can be entered into a raffle to win a free meal for the whole family. Delio’s is open seven days a week, from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., rain or shine. Seasonal-dependent, they hope to keep the truck open as long as possible, with plans to operate through December. “We’re going to have a fall menu where we do soups and grilled cheese,” Dom Jr. said. While the past two months have been busy, the Delios could not be more appreciative. “This is the craziest summer I’ve ever had, but I love it,” Dom Jr. said. “We’d like to give thanks to Broad Channel for greeting us with open arms and our neighbors in Rockaway, Howard Beach and Lidenwood for all showing great support for us,” Dom Sr. said. TRUST YOUR PATH There will be many detours but stay true to your heart. Opening into a vulnerable place usually causes discomfort and a certain shakiness. Every time I write this column, I feel torn open to what lies within me. I can only share my experiences and hope they help you in some way to live a life with some form of contentment and happiness. Each one of you has a story to tell. It is an honor to write about wellness today. The practice of yoga is a
wonderful way to find refuge in your heart, removing the need to control things. There are so many ways to find peace and calm during these precarious times. Let go of the ways you think life should be right now and find yourself going with the flow. A Hopi elder said: “There is a river flowing now, very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and suffer greatly. Know that the
river has its destination. The elders say we must push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open and our heads above the water. See who is in there with you and celebrate! At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, least of ourselves, for the moment we do that, our spiritual growth comes to a halt. The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves; banish the word ‘struggle’ from your attitude and vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred way and in celebration. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” Let’s work together to move forward with courage and strength. There are many healers living in Rockaway Beach. Perhaps you are one of them and you don’t even know it. Kindness and compassion are some of the traits a healer embodies. When you heal yourself, you become whole and free. Your love will flow unconditionally, and you will help guide others into this
The Rockaway Times peaceful place. Practice loving kindness towards yourself first then send it out into the world. We do not know why there is so much suffering and pain, but we can hold space for those by who have experienced loss or sickness. Simply bring that person into your mind and send loving thoughts. “It may have taken a long time, but in the end, it did not matter, after much healing through self-observation she now had strength, she now had courage, and the wisdom to wield her new magic with virtue. No longer did she run from her pain or her troubles, no longer did she allow delusions to capture her mind, no longer did she doubt that the greatest healer she has ever met is her own unconditional love.” You are a healer by young Pueblo. May you be healed, may you be healthy, may you be happy and may you offer your love to others. We are in this together! One world. One life. One God.

Riis Park: A Federal Failure; A Local Eyesore
Photo taken in 2006. By Kevin Boyle
Hey Jen, what gives? On Thursday, August 5, we sent an email with photos to Jennifer Nersesian, the Superintendent of Gateway National Recreation Area. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then she received the equivalent of 25,000 words describing just how derelict Riis Park has become. In 2013, Nersesian was appointed Superintendent and in short order, Riis enjoyed a renaissance with activities and upgrades clearly evident. Appreciative crowds came and locals from Rockaway suddenly had a new place to enjoy. We were thrilled, especially after decades of decline.
So, what happened? Covid is one factor, to be sure. The famed Rockaway Beach Volleyball League has been prohibited from playing the past two summers and Riis Bazaar, which brought music, entertainment and great food options became a ghost of its former self. With activities curbed, it seemed like an odd time to raise the parking lot fee to $20 but, of course, that’s what Gateway did. Maybe they will say the number of paying customers is similar to previous years. The eye test says, no way. The place often looks abandoned. Last Thursday, with temperatures in the 80s, a single concession stand was open from Bay 6 to Bay 14. The mall

at Bay 9 was deserted. And if Covid is the reason why life and energy has been drained from the place, what is the excuse for the physical decay? The concrete “boardwalk” is like the surface of the moon with craters waiting to sprain your ankle or puncture your bike tires. Old basketball, tennis, and shuffleboard courts look like tumbleweed prairies ¬¬–which might be in another National Park but not in one New York City. Stairways to the beach are crumbling; railings are rotting and are just relics from the 1970s. Water fountains would be interesting as antiques but not much use for drinking. So, we asked, Nersesian, what gives? Yes, we know it's always
about money but whose job is it to demand such monies? The Rockaway Times is asking -- Is it yours? Do our electeds have to put requests in bills? Does the Secretary of Interior have to be lobbied? Help us understand why this National Park is a Local Blight. And we're not talking about maintenance. Park employees seem to be doing what they can. It's the crumbling, unsightly park itself. Riis is our next-door neighbor, here in Rockaway, and a bad neighbor is a concern to all. The refusal to let Volleyball go on was a theft of a cultural, seasonal highlight. A thousand Continued on page 15

RIIS PARK Continued from Page 14 people would show up, many on bicycle, to enjoy a Wednesday night unique to the area, maybe unique the whole east coast. More culture was stolen by Gateway gutting Riis Bazaar. After a just a little research we uncovered photos taken in 2006, fifteen years ago. The reason the photos were taken in the first place is because the park was in such bad shape and were used to alert predecessors to Nersesian at Gateway. Evidence shows the neglect carries on fifteen years later. On Monday, Nersesian graciously responded. “Although you don't see it on the ground yet, we do have major improvements in the works that should start to make a big difference over the next couple of years. We have the following projects queued up to help conditions at the site: We are in design with an AE firm for a full rehab of the Riis boardwalk. This will take time to move through to contracting then construction, but will ultimately take care of the uneven walkway. “We are in the planning phase for a redesign of the Riis fee collection operation. This includes the physical infrastructure and footprint (old tollbooths, lane configuration, etc), as well as the fee collection method. This should make the operation more efficient and help alleviate backups. Again, once the planning and design phase is complete, we will go out for contracting for
the construction. “We also have a major fence repair/replacement project currently in contracting that will take care of some of the dilapidated sections that you observed. These are just the major highlights—here is more underway, and of course there

is much more to be done, but we will continue to try to line up additional projects that will contribute to the revitalization of the site.” We followed up by asking: What about play areas? (The overgrown basketball, tennis, and handball courts)?
“We don't have projects ready for those things yet, but we did this year bring in a company to do cost estimates for the various landscape-related improvements that need to happen so that we can start building scopes of work and get them moving forward. It all takes a very long time—years —when you are working within government processes, but we will keep taking those incremental steps to ensure we get to the improvements we all want to see. It was a similar case for the projects I previously mentioned, which we needed to work up and get in the queue several years ago to get them funded to begin now. Once we take care of this round, we hope to move on to the other things you mention. “In the meantime, we will also look at how we can accomplish some smaller-scale improvements with existing staff and partners. (and) Yes, Riis Bathhouse is still moving forward with the Bazaar folks. It's also a long process, but everyone is very committed to it. I don't have a start-date yet.” In a nutshell, don’t hold your breath for change at Riis. Because, you know, “It all takes a very long time—years— when you are working within government processes.” (See photos from 2006). We’ve asked Senator Schumer and Congressman Meeks to comment. We’ve heard zilch. They are our federal reps and they should be called to account as well. Schumer once Continued on page 16

Rose Gurry Remembers WAR TIME BLACKOUTS By Rose Gurry
I have sent the identification card which my grandmother, Bridget Murphy, had to inform everyone that she, a lowly volunteer, was “appointed and hereby authorized" to "perform the duties" as building Control Director. She and we, all her children and grandchildren, lived in the 40th Precinct as you can see from her official card. This precinct was located on 138th St. and Alexander Ave. in the South Bronx. I can vaguely make out that the Police Commissioners last name was Valentine. My grandmother lived in an 8-family tenement on 136th St. I think her duties consisted of taking charge in time of Air Raids/Black outs. When we heard sirens, we were supposed to shut out all lights in the house. My grandmoth-
er went from floor to floor to make sure all was dark and took count of all residents. (She was equipped with a flashlight). When the allclear was sounded, she again checked to see if all tenants were OK. I don't know how she reported to the precinct
because nobody has any kind of phone. I was a little girl during WWII but I remember some blackouts. I was about six years old and in a drug store with two aunts. In those days, pharmacies were only pharmacies (not Walgreens). Some
of these pharmacies had "soda fountains." My aunts and I were having soda at one of these fountains. The sirens sounded, everything went dark, and I fell off the fountain stool and hit my head. I was not really hurt, and I thought Air Raids were great fun. On the other hand, I can remember my brother Johnny. who was about two years old, not enjoying blackouts at all. My mother would seat him on his little stool with a candle in a shot glass. He would cry the entire time because he did not like blackouts. He was afraid of the dark. Everyone acted differently during blackouts. My grandmother had her volunteer responsibilities, my aunts had to contend with a silly girl, and my poor brother was terribly frightened. And then the lights came on all over the world.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Building A Sense of Community — THE BENEFITS OF JOINING AUTISM PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS Thirteen years ago—the shock, joy, euphoria of finding out that I was pregnant are emotions that I vaguely remember. Like most expectant mothers, for nine months I devoured every book, spoke to family members, strangers, doctors, scoured the internet—hungrily searching for information on what to expect, when you’re expecting. However, I state that I vaguely remember those emotions because they were all displaced with contrasting feelings of loneliness, fear and worry when at 18 months my daughter was diagnosed with autism. The parenting books I read to prepare for my new role as mummy in a “normal” nuclear family never mentioned how it feels to raise a child with autism. For years while fighting for my daughter to receive services and an appropriate education, I slowly started to withdraw from friends, family and even my husband. However, when I founded Rockaway Beach Autism Families, a peerled support group for caregivers of children with autism, the walls of isolation slowly started to come down, and folks—the clouds parted! All of a sudden, I found out that I was not alone. As aptly stated in an article on the website, Shinelight, (an organization founded to serve residential needs, employment services, community outreach and education of individuals with developmental disabili-
ties): “Without guidance, it’s easy to feel uninformed about how to parent after an autism diagnosis. You may not know what to expect and advice from family and friends, while well-intentioned, may prove impractical. Information on autism is ever-evolving, so it’s important to seek out advice and support when learning how to navigate parenting a child with autism.” Sharing with other parents has been so instrumental in helping me raise my daughter in a society that could sometimes be unfriendly and not understanding. During the last year amidst the madness of the pandemic, I began to isolate again. However, one parent phoned me and emphatically stated that I should not, can not let the support group go. It warmed my heart when he said of all the organizations he’s involved with through his son, RBAF was the most meaningful. Here was a group of people who felt like family and understood the daily challenges of parenting a child with autism. Through our Facebook page, with questions about financial planning, recreational services, schooling and more, we share ideas and critical information. At last week’s group meeting, it was nice to see both old and new faces. After our speaker’s presentation, folks chatted, exchanged phone numbers
and shared both the highs and lows of everyday life. When parents begin seeking out support, many find that an autism support group in the community is exactly what they need in order to gain useful tools, insights, and emotional support to parent their child with autism. Plus many support groups such as RBAF host not just monthly support group meetings, but a variety of recreational activities for the entire family to enjoy. As described by Shinelight, there are different types of autism parent support group options available. Peer-led support groups such as RBAF allow parents to share information, and express their challenges and frustrations so that they feel validated and understood. Other types of autism parent support groups include: Educational – These groups share the latest information on autism so that you can keep upto-date on ever-changing autism information. Family – These groups allow
for your whole family to join and work together as a unit. Online – These groups are a great option for those who may not have the time or resources to seek outside assistance and can instead find support from the comfort of their own homes. Professionally led – These groups are led by professional organizations that pursue autism advocacy. To conclude, if you are a caregiver of an individual with special needs, don’t feel as though you’re alone. Seek support and help with groups such as RBAF. At our meetings, we host a variety of speakers that inform you on how best to ensure your loved one is taken care of, not just now, but in years to come. Join RBAF at our barbecue fundraiser on Sunday, August 29, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Knights of Columbus’ outdoor patio (333 Beach 90th Street). Facts You Probably Don’t Need SELL? GO WHERE? Some people want to sell their homes in order to downsize or perhaps pull cash out. The situation is not uncommon. I know people who’ve done the “deed.” They’ve sold their Rockaway home and moved to Florida, New Jersey, Manhattan, Long Island, Upstate, or rented an apartment somewhere. I’ve also had sellers who couldn’t decide on their next abode and consequently couldn’t pull the trigger. Over the years I’ve had top dollar offers for properties that sellers couldn’t part with. After
some period of time, in a few exceptional instances, these same sellers returned to the market and couldn’t get anywhere near the same price as they initially passed up. The trend in Rockaway for years has been towards higher prices. However, the cost of relocating has also increased and caused some people to pause. Finally, some people want to sell but their Rockaway roots work against it – family, friends, business interests, etc. It’s an enigma. Call me. Maybe I can help? Love, Robin

Riis Lifeguards Win National Championship By Katie McFadden
Riis Park’s lifeguards have once again proven to be among the best in the country. Several guards from Riis Park recently returned from the 2021 Jersey Mike’s United States Lifesaving Association’s National Championship competition in South Padre Island, Texas, with another championship win to their name. After last year’s competition was scrapped due to Covid, lifeguards from across the country gathered in South Padre Island from Wednesday, August 4 through Saturday, August 7, to show off their superior lifeguarding skills in this annual national competition. “This year’s event in particular was so important for us because it allowed us to get back to the normalcy of our annual National Championships after the disappointment of not being able to compete last year,” said Gus Avila, USLA President. “When we announced that we would be having the competition this year and we committed to it, there was a ton of excitement and desire from our athletes, officials and volunteers to get back to competing and demonstrating their lifesaving skills. We are very thankful to South Padre Island for allowing our remarkable athletes and the best lifeguards in the country to do exactly that.” Once again, the Riis Park lifeguards pulled off another championship win. This year, Riis Park sent 14 of their best including Thomas O’Neill, Pat Kilgallen, Drew Modrov, Brendan Woods, Daniel Collins, Peter Ebert, Michael McAlpine, Matthew Collins, Brian Baldwin, Daniel Cornish, Michael Farias, Emma Lee, Molly Finn and Maya Milrod. The Riis guards took home the LACOLA Trophy, placing first in the B Team or small beach division. With an overall 452.875 points, they blew the competition out of the water, beating Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue with 247 points and Wrightsville Beach (N.C.) with 209 points. Riis won the same

In the Open Mens Surf Race, Riis had an impressive showing with O’Neill placing second and Modrov placing third. In this 20-guard race, Kilgallen also came in seventh, Daniel Collins came in eighth, Michael McAlpine came in eleventh, Matthew Collins in thirteenth and Brian Baldwin in seventeenth. In the Open Mens Rescue Race, Riis dominated as a team of O’Neill, McAlpine and Peter Ebert came in first, and another team of Modrov, Kilgallen and Daniel Cornish came in second. Demote Him Dear Editor: Does anybody know to whom at the Parks Department I should complain about the crew that was driving east on the beach at 101st Street at about 8 p.m. on Friday, August 6 and had the job of picking up the trash? I had been on the beach since about four in the afternoon with neighbors who were marking a year since the death of our friend (daughter, sister) Jessica Sperling. After they left, I stayed on the beach and read. The light and the waves were amazing.
Couples came and sat too close to me and played music and fed sea gulls, but I outlasted them. Around sunset, two men drove up in a Parks Dept. pickup to bag up the trash, which was overflowing the can. Did I mention that we had just had a wake? The driver used his arm to sweep the overflow off the can and onto the sand before tying up the bag. As he was driving away, I said, “You’re leaving that there?” He said, “Yeah.” There was a suggestion of “What are you going to do about it?” What I did about it was what I would have expected him to do about it: I picked up the trash. It was not too disgusting—pizza boxes, plastic cups, beer cans, maybe a diaper—and dropped it in the fresh bag they had put in the can. Then I came home and showered. I don’t want to get anyone in trouble, but unless a second crew was following to pick up after the first, this guy was doing the opposite of his job: he was making a mess on the beach. Demote him. RISE Environmentor 2021 Student Research Program
Sensor Lab. The research projects students are conducting are: analyzing aerial photos to better understand seal stranding events (Mentor: Sammi Chavez - AMSEAS); determining the main contributing materials to marine debris in our area (Mentor: Lindsey Reisz - AMSEAS); using necropsy data to highlight trends in species and location of deceased marine mammals (Mentor: Alli Deperte and Jennifer Scalo - AMSEAS); mapping breeding pair populations of Black Skimmers in NYC to see if sea level rise and other mitigation strat-
egies impact their numbers (Mentor: Jason Smith - DEC); creating habitat and breeding density maps for shoreline birds in Rockaway for long term conservation (Mentor: Jason Smith - DEC); and installing a tidal sensor in Jamaica Bay and surveying the community to better monitor flooding events in vulnerable coastal communities like Rockaway (Mentor: Kendra Krueger - CUNY Community Sensor Lab). Environmentor students will write reports on their findings, and create presentations and posters that will be presented at an in-person end of the year celebration at the RISE building (Friday, August 13), as well as virtually through the New York City Science Research Mentoring Consortium on the Whova platform (Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21). with these real life and real traumatizing experiences. My biggest hope is that you have girlfriends, a circle of women that can figure out (or know how to) hold space for you. You are asking how to reclaim your body, and that is a great question. Since it's been 18 months, I imagine you have physically seen changes. Physical self-care is ultra-important. I believe our bodies are wiser than we can even imagine, they are resilient and highly intelligent. So, let's go starting with that fact. Here are three ways to cherish your body, your home. Physical self-care is the most important to do especially when you don't feel like it. 1. A good regimen includes a oncea-week bath to sit and soak. There are many recipes of what to put in the bath, keeping it simple; use Epsom salts and rose petals. 2. Self gentle touch on your skin is one of my favorites, and
I recommend doing it slowly, which may bring up resistance and thoughts of "why am I even doing this?" Do it anyway. Put on opera or an instrumental classical music, I even like a blindfold here, and after a bath, or whenever gently touch your skin, the gentle loving touch of the sweetest kind. 3. Write daily love notes to your body, in a journal, with a writing utensil. Share these writings with no one, write everything, your anger, your frustration, your questions, your answers, your desires, all of it, and start it with; "Dear Body" and if you don't know what to write, start with "Dear Body, I don't know what to write..." and see what happens next. You are brave and you are blessed beyond your knowledge. Sending love, Enchantress Shane To submit your question email: support@enchantedembodiment.com
By Eden Chan and Brianna Francis, Summer Team Leaders and Project Managers
This summer, the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity (RISE) held its sixth annual session of the Environmentor program. Environmentor is a research program which takes place over the spring and summer and is open to students who live or attend school in and around the Rockaway peninsula. Due to the pandemic, RISE’s Environmentor program had to adopt a hybrid model where we had virtual workshops on Tuesdays and Thursdays and in person activities on Fridays. Throughout the sessions over the summer, we have been working closely with a variety of research mentors to support students as they conduct environmental science research and apply the scientific method. However, of course we had some fun with activities like surfing, fishing, birding and team bonding! One team bonding activity has been working with the organization Irondale, an improv group that has been working
with the group of students all summer long to work on their public speaking and science communication skills. Students work alongside professional mentors in their field and are supported by RISE project managers (Eden Chan and Brianna Francis). This summer, there were a total of six projects with the following collaborating organizations: the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMSEAS), the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and the City University of New York (CUNY) Community

How To Fix Broken Dear Enchantress, About 18 months ago, I broke off an engagement, we got pregnant and then the baby didn't make it. We couldn't connect. I think it was too much for him to bear, and well, me too, but he couldn't deal with my crying. I put myself in therapy, and I didn't know what else to do. That is going ok. I like the woman I work with, sometimes I see her on zoom and sometimes in person. I'm tired, I'm tired of thinking, eating, breathing this huge part of my life. I feel like a marked
woman. I feel like a broken experiment. My ex and I shared a lot of friends. It became clear who would "choose me" and who would choose him. I continue to learn the lesson that I cannot control people. What I want to ask you, is how can I reclaim my body? I feel heavy and sad, and literally like I'm broken. Help. Dear Rosie on the Rise, Dearest Sister, I commend you for showing up here and being witnessed in your life experience. You are not alone, and it's important to show up

Today I would like to tell you about advances in heart valve replacement techniques. But first, allow me to review how blood flows through the human heart. The main vein that returns unoxygenated blood to the heart is the vena cava. The superior vena cava drains the upper body, arms, and head while the inferior vena cava drains the lower body and legs. Blood flows from the vena cava into the right atrium, then through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. When the right ventricle contracts, it pushes the blood through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary arteries, then into the lungs where the blood is reoxygenated and carbon dioxide is released. The reoxygenated blood returns to the heart via the pulmonary veins, where it enters the left atrium. The blood then moves through the mitral valve, into the left ventri-
The Rockaway Times
Blood Flows and Heart Valves cle which, when it contracts, pushes the blood through the aortic valve into the aorta and out to the body. As an aside, the pulmonary arteries are the only arteries that carry unoxygenated blood, and the reverse is true of the pulmonary veins. The purpose of the heart valves is to act as check valves and prevent the backflow of blood when the ventricles contract. All four valves have a similar design in that each valve has three leaflets that open and close as needed. The leaflets are anchored to the heart wall to prevent prolapse, or over extension. Over time, heart valves may become tight or may leak. Sometimes a leak is caused by a flail leaflet, which occurs when the leaflet’s anchor snaps. A fairly common congenital abnormality is a bicuspid valve, where the valve has two leaflets instead of three. A valve that either cannot fully open or close will, over time, cause heart failure. This is overwhelmingly true of the aor-
tic and mitral valves. The two right heart valves, the tricuspid and pulmonary, rarely fail because the pressure in the right heart is considerably lower than the left side. For example, each year in the U.S. about 180,000 heart valve replacements are performed. Of these, about 250 are for the tricuspid valve. Traditionally, heart valve replacement involved opening the chest wall and replacing the damaged valve, a very complicated and high-risk procedure. Early in this century, a new procedure was developed which used catheters inserted into a large vein or artery, usually the femoral vessels in the groin, to replace the damaged valve. This is called transcatheter valve replacement and is rapidly becoming the procedure of choice. As of 2019, the number of transcatheter aortic valve insertions (TAVI) exceeded the number of surgical aortic valve replacements (SAVR) by 77,991 to 57,626, and the number of TAVIs is expected to exceed
130,000 by 2026. There are two main types of replacement valves. There are mechanical valves which have a fabric ring and leaflets made of titanium or carbon fiber and there are bioprosthetic valves which use pig or cow tissue for leaflets. Only bioprosthetic valves may be inserted using the transcatheter method. Mechanical valves are more durable but come with a risk of blood clots, so lifetime anticoagulation (blood thinners) is needed. They tend to be used in younger patients with longer life expectancy. Bioprosthetic valves are less durable, do not require blood thinners, but are subject to deterioration and may need to be replaced. They are usually used in older patients with shorter life expectancies. Peter Pan Syndrome By Lou Pastina
Do you know folks who seem to not want to grow up? You know the people I’m talking about ; they try to stay young by doing things that young people do. I am all for staying as young as I can for as long as I can. Soon I will be applying for Medicare, and I wonder how that can even be possible? I’m not old! But then again, the numbers don’t lie. I don’t run anymore, but I still bike. I still play music and want to for as long as I can, but there will come a time when my gnarly fingers won’t grip the fretboard correctly. Even Keith Richards must have this problem. I was recently biking through Fort Tilden and found a group of men
shooting at the most secluded basketball courts on the peninsula. There were four of them, and I recognized them all, some younger than me, but some older. Clearly these guys liked the comradery of hoops and the feel of hitting a shot from fifteen feet out. But really? Did they have to hide? I have seen these guys post videos of themselves playing at various high schools reliving those glory days. They don’t have to hide. Although I was told recently that in some parks in the city, adults are not allowed if they aren’t accompanied by a child. Seems weird, but I get it. I mean when did it become a bad thing to become old? The idea behind the term Graybeard was to convey a sense of wisdom that comes from “graying” elders. I remember some asking, what would a “graybeard” do to import some sense of justice
to a situation. Age brings an accumulation of experiences that somehow translates into knowledge. Or it’s supposed to at least. I will mark my 65th year in this world next year and there are days I still haven’t figured it out. My mermaid has forbidden me from engaging in any competitive sports like basketball anymore, because I have some genetic chip in me that causes me to play like a maniac. Which is frowned upon by all the others playing for fun. I usually only wind up injuring myself and have rarely, if ever, caused injury to another. But I guess that’s a lesson for the next lifetime, so my yogic, flippered roommate tells me. So, this notion of Peter Pan, of never growing up, seems to be something that you see around. Some folks can pull it off quite neatly, others appear like they should rethink their approach. I have thought of walking over to
the schoolyard to shoot some baskets, something I did everyday as a kid. Is it weird that an adult would want to do that? I remember older guys still playing in schoolyards growing up in and around Greenpoint. Didn’t seem strange then. Although, I must admit none were in their sixties. But what joy it is to dribble a basketball and pull up for a jumper and see it go in. Not so much fun chasing errant shots around a court that doesn’t have a fence in sight. But maybe that’s the price for striving to stay young. Peter Pan didn’t have it all so bad. He had Wendy and Michael as friends, fought pirates and Indians, and lived in a treehouse. And Tinker Bell was very cool. Perhaps the secret is to never grow up, to always act like you feel, and if you feel young then be that way. Yeah, I think I’m going with that!

Wrestle Talk WWE RELEASES MORE STARS By Eric Jayden
This past week, the WWE released numerous NXT Superstars from their contracts leading to everyone to suspect that the WWE's NXT Brand may stop producing content and close altogether. Although this is unconfirmed, there were reports that if the NXT Brand continues to operate, they will be very picky on who they select as it was quoted by a WWE representative, "We want an absolute star In the making." The NXT Brand has always been the developmental company for the WWE and many wrestlers have moved on to the main roster on the WWE Raw and Smackdown Shows. It was also reported that WWE Superstar and Wrestling Legend Ric Flair was also released from his contract with the WWE. Rumors are flying about whether Ric Flair will
go to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and we would see a possible reunion of the 4 Horseman which would be absolutely insane if that happened. I guess we will see how that plays out in the coming weeks. We here at WrestleTalk would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Beautiful Bobby Eaton who passed away this past week. Beautiful Bobby was part of the Legendary Tag Team, The Midnight Express, winning multiple Tag Team Championships throughout his career. I, myself, was saddened to hear about his passing as I admired him very much. RIP Beautiful Bobby. To all WrestleTalk Fans and People of the Rockaways: This is your opportunity to catch Live Pro Wrestling this coming Saturday night, August 14, 2021, as East Coast Pro Wrestling holds its annual show in Broad Channel. It all goes down at the
Broad Channel Athletic Club at 7 p.m. Tickets will still be available at the door for $20 or you can contact 917-9297326 to order your tickets in advance for $15. Do not miss out! This will be a huge wrestling event and yours truly will be in action making my return to the ring. Do you have any questions? Please - @followthebadguy and Instasend them to eavil183@yahoo. gram - @badguysexiness. Have com and follow me on Twitter a great week!
