Mother Earth Has Landed Artist/sculptor Kris Perry created Mother Earth, part of the New York City Parks Department’s Art in the Parks program and is seen here doing a little landscaping on Wednesday. The 35-foot high sculpture, which was installed by the 98th Street beach entrance on Tuesday, August 11, leaves plenty of room for people to walk under. “At a time when people are eager to escape the confines of their homes to enjoy the outdoors, I cannot imagine a more fitting location for Mother Earth than this popular stretch of Rockaway Beach. Where the land meets the water, there is an opportunity for deep contemplation. Mother Earth will remain in Rockaway until August 2021.

Keeping It Clean! The Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy, partners of The Rockaway Hotel/7 Group and other volunteers all teamed up to help keep our beaches clean. On the morning of Monday, August 10, 25 volunteers showed up on Beach 108th

Street to help clean the beach and areas around the boardwalk. Despite a hot, sunny morning, the volunteers put in a lot of hard work, cleaning up 360 pounds of trash in 30 bags.

The Rockaway Times

And that’s a wrap! The Rockaway Times Photo Contest was another success. This year’s grand prize winner is Theresa Racine, with her Endless Summer-vibe photo of a surfer walking on the beach at sunset. After narrowing down hundreds of photo entries submitted through April, the photo contest came down to a top 30, which were displayed in poster-size along the boardwalk and ferry landing. A pool of judges then narrowed that down to a top 10. On Friday, August 7, John Cori, who first suggested the contest idea five years ago, continued in his role as master of ceremonies at the finals. He gathered a number of judges including Alex Zablocki from the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks

Conservancy, Eric Peterson of NYC Parks, Marian Tinnelly who had a photo in the top 30, and others, to make the difficult choice of picking a top three and the grand prize winner. With so many incredible photos this year, it was not an easy task. The judging was done on with boardwalk with a Facebook Live stream of the announcement, a departure from previous years because of Covid restrictions. Using stickers to select their favorites out of the top 10, the judges awarded the top prize to Racine’s surfer on the beach photo. Racine gets the $500 grand prize, as well as a front page feature in the newspaper. Racine says she took this top shot around Beach 67th Street last fall with her Nikon D3200. “I want to thank all the judges that voted for my photo,” Racine

PHOTO CONTEST Continued from Page 6 said. “I am humbly honored. Tears just flooded my eyes because it was such a surprise. I am not used to winning anything. Thank you, Rockaway Times from the bottom of my heart to allow us to share our God given gifts.” In second place was Don Riepe’s photo of a dancer leaping on the beach on Breezy Point. Riepe’s photographic talents often stand out in the contest. This is his third time placing within the top 10 and he was even a grand prize winner one year. Riepe says he took this year’s photo with a Canon 7D camera with a 100-400mm telephoto lens. In third place was a photo that might look familiar as it graced the cover of this year’s Summer Guide. The timely photo of a woman on a bike, wearing a face mask, taken by the subject’s mother, Margie Daly. Congratulations to all of

the winners and to thank you to all of the photographers for sharing their talent with Rockaway. Thank you to NYC Parks, JBRPC and NYC Ferry for being supportive partners in this endeavor. If anyone in the top 30 would like their poster-sized photo, send an email to mail@ rockawaytimes.com for info on how to pick it up. Be sure to get those shots ready for next year’s contest, which will likely launch around February.

***** Yay, to this. The 3 on 3 By The Sea Tournament in honor of Clare Droesch, the legendary basketball player and friend to many, will happen Friday, August 28. Last year’s event was a festival of fun and love and it’s great news indeed that the tournament is now a tradition that lives on. See Page 11 for more details. ***** Congratulations to Theresa Racine for nabbing top prize in the Rockaway Times Photo Contest. Her photo swayed judges who loved the endless summer vibe. The Top 10 this year were all spectacular. Thanks to all who make this such a great event. The photos, displayed on the boardwalk, since Memorial Day, were seen and enjoyed by thousands. If one of your photos was a Top

30 and you want the one that was on the boardwalk, email us: mail@rockawaytimes.com ***** Speaking of art, a 35 foot tall sculpture called “Mother Earth” by artist Kris Perry, is now on display at Beach 98th Street and Shorefront Parkway. The work is part of the New York City Parks Department’s Art in the Parks program. Somehow the rusted veneer of this sculpture goes well with the toilets in the sky (aka the boardwalk bathrooms) that landed after Sandy. ***** Gotta admit, we don’t get a lot of news releases about radioactive contamination but that’s exactly what we received last week from the press office of Gateway National. Dead Horse Bay, just over the Marine Park Bridge in Brooklyn, we’re told, will be closed to the public in August “due to the presence of radiological contamination at the site.” Visitors to Dead Horse sometimes dig for old bottles and other items and apparently that’s not safe to do. The NPS is

at work investigating the contamination and its extent. And here’s a kicker: “This cleanup may last many years.” To find out more about this cleanup, please visit Gateway’s website at www.nps.gov/gate. You can also email DeadHorseBayCleanup@nps.gov. ***** The Rockaway Medical Arts Complex on Beach 105th Street has been largely shrouded in mystery since its quiet opening last summer. No ads, no press releases, no nothing. A couple years back, South Nassau was expected to lease out a big chunk of space but that never materialized. Now, St. John’s Hospital will be taking space and will be keeping us posted on services. ***** We got a tour of The Rockaway Hotel on Monday and we can say with certainty the place is going to be great. Although it may not look it, a lot of the work is done and finishing touches are being done. The ground floor restaurant won’t open for a while but rooms,

The Rockaway Times the pool, and rooftop bar will be opening in just a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed. ***** Here’s a reminder to give Super Burrito at Arverne by The Sea a try. Early reviews are great. Order online at SuperBurritoNyc.com ***** The 15th Annual Shorebird Festival at Jamaica Bay is happening, this time online, Saturday, August 22 (10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.) Join on Eventbrite and get a free ticket to this online Zoom event featuring programs by local shorebird experts. Program includes a LIVE presentation by boat from the bay by Don Riepe plus photography and identification sessions by Kevin Karlson and Lloyd Spitalnik. The National Park Service will present a puppet show for children and NYC Audubon scientists will present their research on shorebirds in Jamaica Bay. Clare Droesch Remembered 3 ON 3 BY THE SEA SET The 7th Annual 3 on 3 by the Sea will be on Friday August 28 in the St. Francis de Sales schoolyard. The event was started by Rockaway basketball legend Clare Droesch, and continues now in her memory. This year's event will be different due to COVID-19 restrictions, but a great day is still expected. All teams must register prior to August 26. There is a limit to how many teams can be accepted, so register early to make sure your team is in the running. Teams consist of either three or four players, and the entry cost is $50/player. Each team will play a minimum of three games, and each player receives a t-shirt. Play will be organized into pods of four teams. In the course of a 2-hour window, each team will play the others in its pod during round robin. The top two

will then play for the championship. Competition will be organized by grade, with brackets for both boys and girls in (upcoming) grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and high school, as well as Men's Open, and Women's Open.Teams will be placed based on the grade of their oldest player. Only players, officials, and staff will be

able to enter the schoolyard. Games will be 12 minutes long with any substitutions at the six minute mark. There will be three windows of play, 11-1, 1-3, 3-5. Accepted teams will be notified of their window and their pod on Thursday August 27, and will need to check in 30 minutes before their window begins on Friday. There will not be a clinic this year, and there will also be no on-site merchandise sales but orders may be placed for delivery after the event is over. All spectators MUST wear a mask to watch outside the fence surrounding the schoolyard. It will be a wonderful opportunity to once again honor the memory of Clare's accomplishments, both on the court, and in her courageous fight against breast cancer. Proceeds from last year's event funded scholarships and pro-

grams at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy, Christ the King High School and Boston College. This year's recipients of the Clare Droesch Scholarship at SFDSCA are Lauren Brenna and Danielle Tansey. Registration forms are available outside St. Francis after mass on Sundays, at McManus-Leahy Instructional Basketball this week, and online at www.thegraybeards. com. Registration forms can be mailed to The Graybeards office. Don't delay. Register now for the 7th Annual 3 on 3 by the Sea.

Tragedy Marks a Thankless Job on the Sea By Katie McFadden

When sitting on the beach and looking out on to the horizon, it’s rare to have a day where you don’t see large ships upon the Atlantic. Many of these ships enter New York’s waters to dock at piers in New York City and New Jersey. But the ship captains don’t do it alone. What many may not know about are the Sandy Hook Pilots. Retired NYPD Transit Chief Joe Fox, recently brought attention to this important organization on local Facebook page, Friends of Rockaway Beach. The Sandy Hook Pilots Association, in existence since 1694 and headquartered in Staten Island, is comprised of a small fleet of boats and licensed maritime pilots who know New York’s waters better than anyone else. But their job is anything but easy. These skilled pilots have the important job of greeting passenger liners,

freighters and tankers before they enter New York Harbor. The designated pilot greets a ship, often right in front of the Rockaway peninsula, from one of the association’s small vessels. The pilot then climbs on to the visiting ship by a rope ladder and helps guide the crew into New York’s waters, ensuring they arrive without incident. Sometimes they make this dangerous move in the middle of the night. As many of these ships arrive from all parts of the world, the pilots want to make a good impression, so they make this move while wearing a suit and tie. “When these ships come to our country, we are the first people they see. It’s all about first impres-

sions, one pilot told Fox when he took a tour with them a few years ago. Fox’s reason for bringing attention to this organization was marked by tragedy. On the night of Wednesday, August 5, one such pilot, Captain Timothy Murray of Malverne, was attempting to board a ship at 10:30 p.m. when he fell from the ladder, landing on the smaller vessel below, just a few miles off of Rockaway. Murray was transported to a hospital in Staten Island but died of his injuries. A pilot for eight years, Captain Murray leaves behind his wife, Erin, and five children (Brennan, Rory, Grace, James, Ella). Captain Murray’s death comes just eight months after another Sandy Hook pilot, Captain Dennis R. Sherwood died after falling while attempting to board a ship on December 30, 2019. Their tragic deaths exemplify just how dangerous this thankless job is. Many are mourning the loss of Captain Murray, who was

said to be a wonderful husband, father and an overall great guy. Fox says he’ll remember him in his own way. “I often look out to those ships and then look on the Marine Traffic app and see where they come from. I think of the people on those ships. I wonder what their lives are like and how much they miss their families in their homelands. I wonder what it’s like for them to be away at sea for months at a time. My visit to those Sandy Hook pilots a few years ago has taught me what I think is an important perspective in life. There is a human story behind just about everything we see, Fox said. “And from this day on, when I look out to the lights of those ships of our Rockaway Shore, I will always think of Captain Timothy Murray. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up on behalf of the Murray family. Summer Theater On Monday, August 10, at 5 p.m., 10-year-old Rockaway actor, now director and producer, Rosemary Tubridy, welcomed audience members to her parent's backyard for a production of "The Soundtrack." Rosemary began with "Thank you for coming to our show, I just want to say how hard the cast worked all summer," on choreography, costume making and learning each song. Claire Loonam was the opening act. Soon followed by "Main Street USA" with Lottie Courtney taking center stage, Kolby Good, Juliette Jamin, Caroline Tubridy, Violet Warnock, Hannah LaPrice, Jillian Heeran and Lily Warnock. Every parent's favorite song, "Let It Go" was included in this montage and performed magnificently by Maeve Murphy, Teaghan Tubridy, Brooke Jamin, Jaque Tubridy, Ale Gahn, Maddie Jamin and Holly Warnock.

"Tomorrow" was performed by Hannah LaPrice and Rose Warnock. "A Whole New World" had fantastic choreography by Jillian Heeran and Maeve Pow-

ell. After the brief intermission, Kolby Good took us "Under The Sea" and Lottie Courtney returned to the stage as Rapunzel in "When Will My Life Begin,”

followed by the songs "Show Yourself" and "Speechless." The entire cast closed out the show with a glorious "I Just Can't Wait To be King" from "The Lion King." After raiding her Uncle Paddy Tubz' closet, Rosemary, along with co-director, Dylan Courtney and co-producer Brielle Heeran, put together a stage crew and costume committee including Kennedy Good and Skylar Ronayne. Anyone who was there, could tell these kids really miss Theater Arts! As the saying goes...."the show must go on!" Congratulations to Rosemary Tubridy and the entire cast on keeping theater alive in 2020 on The Rock!

Far Rockaway Colts Rein in Positive Change By Katie McFadden

What started with a small idea and some inspiration, has turned into an effort that is changing the lives of local youth for the better. The Far Rockaway Colts is more than just a flag football team. This NYPD-led program has become not only a place for kids in Far Rockaway to have some fun on the field, but it is lifting the community in positive ways through mentorship and education, while improving police and community relations. About two years ago, Shameka Hewitt’s son, Londeice Cornish, was recommended by his school to try out the Far Rockaway Colts program. When Hewitt heard it was operated by the NYPD, there was some hesitation. “I had lived in Brooklyn by the 75th Precinct and somebody could threaten to chop my head off and I wouldn’t have called the cops. I wanted nothing to do with them,” she said. But Londeice was up for it and gave it a try. What Hewitt didn’t expect was just how important this life-changing program would become for her then nine-year-old. “I got a call from the school one day and they said he had missed 20-something days of school. I found out that he would leave the house and then wait until the coast was clear and come back to the house. He wasn’t telling me anything. He had fallen into a depressed state where he was getting bullied because he has a gap in his teeth, and he wears glasses. I spoke with Coach Pat and told him my son wouldn’t talk to me. He sat down with him and talked to him. Londeice confided in him and they built up his confidence and once he realized these officers had his back, he was ready to go to school. He said the kids don’t bother him anymore because he has big friends in big places now. They made sure he was at school each day and they let him know that if he ever had a problem, his new friends would help him.” Those new friends were

among the 14 officers of the NYPD Neighborhood Coordination School Initiative which runs the Far Rockaway Colts program. In partnership with the Department of Education, these 14 officers, with the leadership of Lieutenant Lenora Moody, Sergeant Kai Bowen and Detective Patrick Blanc, aka “Coach Pat,” are changing the lives of 117 boys between the ages of nine to 11 from roughly 15 schools across the peninsula and Broad Channel. And these officers are all in. The kids in the program, recommended by the DOE, have access to their NYPD mentors 24/7, with just a phone call away, no matter what the need is. To keep the kids engaged, they hit the field, playing flag football taught by Coach Pat and some of the other officers. However, that play time comes after schoolwork is taken care of. In the partnership with the DOE, the boys in the program receive free tutoring after school to help with homework or whatever subjects they may be struggling with. Hewitt has seen the positive improvements in her son firsthand. “When he got his first report card, he was getting twos, but now he has threes and fours because they challenge him and that’s what he needed. When he feels like something is too hard, they tell him, ‘never say you can’t do something that you didn’t try.’ So he tries and he doesn’t stop until he figures it out. This isn’t just

to play flag football. It teaches him how to control his anger, how to do his work, how to ask for help when he needs it. They push him to do what he thinks he can’t do and when he accomplishes it, all you see is teeth,” Hewitt said of her son who now proudly shows off his smile. This transformative program was sparked from a small idea. “It was all by being home and being a sports fan,” Lt. Moody said. Back in 2015, she was watching a program on HBO Sports where she learned about a similar sports mentorship program in Los Angeles. Having worked with kids for more than 20 years, the program caught her attention and she was determined to make it a reality in New York. She was soon introduced to Detective Blanc. “I showed him the video and he looked at me and said, ‘Let’s build this.’” Detective Blanc helped bring the idea to those who run the show at One Police Plaza and it wasn’t long before Moody and Blanc were on a plane to Los Angeles to learn about the LAPD’s program. The NYPD decided to focus the program on Far Rockaway to influence youth in a neighborhood that was facing problems. “We wanted to help with the gang problems and shootings involving underage people out here,” Lt. Moody said. However, getting it off the ground in New York took some time. After being given the blessings

by then NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill, and partnering with the DOE through the help of Councilman Donovan Richards, the Far Rockaway Colts program officially launched in 018. And it has been changing lives ever since. According to Moody, in one of the participating schools, P.S. 105, where about 20 kids are members of the Colts, attendance among the participants went from 80% to 98%. Other schools have reported less violence, simply by having one of the officers from the program present. One principal spoke of a student that she was ready to give up on. After joining the Colts, he’s now at the top of the class. “I think we’re saving a lot of lives out here,” Detective Blanc said. “We’ve seen these kids’ attitude change, everything has changed.” The program has also started to change the negative view of police. “What I’ve realized is that not all them are the same. I wanted nothing to do with them, but then you see these guys and realize wow, they’re really not all the same,” Hewitt said. “This program is needed. It’s really helping these kids out there. The love they have for these kids is genuine. It’s not about a paycheck for them, it’s not for show. They really want to make a change and they are.” The Far Rockaway Colts are likely here to make changes for the long run. The program is made possible through funding from The Police Foundation, grants from National Grid, and most recently, the Far Rockaway Colts received a big show of support from the New York Giants. In late June, the Colts joined in for a virtual pizza party with members of the Giants to launch their new partnership. “This partnership shows the longevity of the program,” Lt. Moody said. As the Colts earn wins on the field and in the classroom, it looks like the Far Rockaway Colts is a huge win for Rockaway. It illustrates an underlying issue—speeding cyclists—that has been facing pedestrians walking on the boardwalk over the entire summer. The following letter is one that I've sent to all community/ local politicians and agencies. I heard back from Joseph Addabbo and Eric Peterson of Parks Department. Of the nine officials to whom the letter was sent, only those two

WE GET EMAIL Continued from Page 15 had to be taken by stretcher to a hospital for treatment. Fortunately for him, he was wearing a helmet, which perhaps saved his life. Fortunately for the pedestrians, he was able to stop before hitting anyone in his path. I have watched in horror for many months, as arrogant bikers speed and weave their way through the crowded boardwalk, with many young children and elderly in their path. When pedestrians shout “slow down,” the Tour de France types usually give an arrogant, “don’t tell me what to do” response. I was once told “Oh— another member of the boardwalk police.” Even as the young man was being examined by EMTs and put on a stretcher, many bikers sped by the scene without so much as a curious glance. Some bikers did stop in support of the rider, but most of the speed addicts kept their usual pace.

I’m not sure what can be done to change the rules for bikers riding on the boardwalk on the same level as pedestrians. Certainly, bike lanes don’t help, as riders tend to use the middle of the boardwalk and the lanes aren’t wide enough to accommodate the groups that often travel together. I'm not sure if it’s speed or danger that attracts them, but it’s certainly not safety or concern for the welfare of others who might be hurt by their bikes, which are really vehicles, travelling at high speeds. I don’t understand why they don’t ride on the city streets where innocent people might not be victimized by their desire for an adrenaline rush. Sad to say, the next incident might be a fatal one. PS - This past weekend, a bright yellow "sandwich board" sign was put on the boardwalk at Beach 116th—a particularly dangerous spot to beachgoers coming on or off the ramp. The sign says, "CYCLISTS PLEASE USE

CAUTION." A good first, but a temporary first step— and still I witness many "speeders" racing by and around it. JANE KANE

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Special Needs Trust "No one plans to fail but they fail to plan." This old saying should be more than an inspiration, but an impetus for parents of children with special-needs to start planning ahead for their loved ones’ financial future. One crucial step to create a long-term cocoon of financial security for your loved one is through a Special Needs Trust (SNT). I spoke with Chris Carrieri, a manager of financial services at Prudential Financial, on why establishing a SNT should be on the top of the list, especially if you don’t want to jeopardize any government services your loved one receives after they turn age 18. So, what is a Special Needs Trust? A SNT is a trust tailored to a person with special needs that is designed to manage assets for that person's benefit while not compromising access to important government benefits. According to Carrieri, families need to sit with a professional to start the conversation. “Most families with a child or adult with special needs benefit from sitting with a financial planner because we lay out their entire future with a detailed analysis. Plus, some financial planners such as myself connect families with an attorney and accountant to start the process, which can take up to three years or even more, depending on the complexity of the estate.

“Parents already know that financially providing for a child or adult with special needs is extremely expensive. For example, with my sister, her medication is $10K per month. And I’ve seen with my clients, the expenses for the loved ones exceeds even that with housing, equipment, transportation, special aides, and recreational activities. The monthly expenses vary with the level of disability the individual has. Even with a ‘high functioning’ child with autism, between cooking classes, after-school programs, it’s at least $100K per year,” Carrieri said. This is why it’s important to supplement your loved one’s income with a SNT. “I’ve met clients who didn’t plan ahead and lost their state benefits because they took out life insurance policies for themselves and their children and also, other families members took out policies. If any of that money is in the child’s name once they turn 18, the state will deny them public benefits, and either say, you could keep the policy, but will be financially responsible for any services needed, which as we know is incredibly expensive. It’s important to know that once your loved one turns 18, in order for them to continue to get services from the state, they cannot have more than $1300 in their bank account,” he said. At the onset of the interview, Carrieri was quite frank about his passion to advise families

with loved ones with special needs because of the challenges he witnessed his parents endured in caring for his sister. “I saw my parents struggle through the process because it wasn’t done right the first time with my sister. At the time, I just started my career in financial advising, and there weren’t many financial advisors who specialized in working with special-needs families because: 1- If you don’t have a child or family member with special needs, it’s hard for you to understand the challenges; 2 - As opposed to other planning for other populaces, special-needs financial planning can take two to three years to really complete the process; and 3 - Very few advisors have the availability or the means to really build a practice on financial planning and advising just for special-needs clients. That’s also why I took it upon myself to help other families,” Carrieri said. He also said that he saw how the stress of managing the

Page 21 day-to-day needs of his sister almost caused his parents to divorce. “Most families with children with special needs, at least 80 percent of them end up getting divorced. And keep in mind when parents are divorced, it’s an even bigger variable because what happens if the other individual remarries, and what if there are other children involved? Now that parent who started a new family has to have a life insurance policy that exclusively goes to the individual’s SNT because once he or she passes away, you want to make sure that policy is in place because that’s going to fund the child’s future,” Carrieri said. Stay tuned for Rockaway Beach Autism Families’ next virtual group meeting with special guest speaker, Christopher Carrieri, who will present information and address questions on Special Needs Trust. BOOMERS BEWARE ESTATE PLANNING: DON'T ASSUME By Nancy J. Brady, RN, Esq., Part- Directives are completed when all financial and real property heriting from you could bring someone is well, taking these transactions, avoiding the need their estate value higher, resultner, Brady & Bader, LLP

Estate planning is the area of practice having to do with planning the ultimate distribution of your belongings and assets. The planning involves the titling of assets, completion of pertinent documents (will, Power of Attorney and in some cases Trust documents) to preserve one’s assets during one’s lifetime, as well as arranging for the quickest, least costly means to transfer assets when one passes. Estate planning can also minimize estate tax consequences for your loved ones if planning is done during your life. In New York, the law provides means to appoint someone to manage our finance and health care decision making should we become incapacitated. If valid Power of Attorney documents and Advance Medical

steps can avoid complicated and costly court proceedings to have someone appointed to take those roles. Having summarized the goals of estate planning, it is important to address some common misconceptions. First, married couples often assume they can access their spouse’s assets/ property. While it is true that one spouse can access all of the funds in a joint account (if the account is titled properly) just because one is married, he/she cannot access assets in which they are not joint owner, and cannot make transfer of real property even if they are joint owner. In completing a Power of Attorney, one can select the representatives they would want to make financial decisions for them and represent them in

for Guardianship proceedings in an emergency. For these reasons, the Power of Attorney is a very valuable document to have in place. We therefore recommend that all clients have this document in place, including married and unmarried clients. Many people assume they don’t need a will, or that everything they own at their passing will transfer automatically to their surviving spouse. While it is important to name beneficiaries on financial assets so that these assets pass outside of the will, and thereby avoid probate (the process required to prove a will valid, or in the absence of a will who is entitled to the estate). For those assets titled in one’s name alone with no beneficiary designation, or “payable on death designation, your will is the document that spells out who should inherit from you. People sometimes mistakenly assume they don’t need a will because they have beneficiary designations on all their financial assets. While it is true that assets that allow for beneficiary or joint owner designations can avoid probate, it remains important to have a will for many other reasons—there may be an old unclaimed account, of lawsuit proceeds if one dies as the result of an accident, negligence or malpractice. Assets left without beneficiary designations, payable on death designations, or joint owners will pass to the persons delineated by the intestacy statute in the state of New York. This order of persons who will inherit (known as distributes) may be different that what the deceased would have intended. For example, if you have no will, and are single, with no children, assets that are titled in your name alone when you pass away would pass to your parents via the intestacy statute. If your parents are elderly, they may lose government benefits if they inherit from you. If your parents are wealthy, in-

ing in tax consequences for their beneficiaries. Another example is if one of a married couple passes with no will and assets in his own name, the surviving spouse is NOT entitled to the entire value of the asset passing through probate, but to the first $50,000 plus half. So – if a house valued at $500,000 is titled in only one spouse’s name, if that spouse passes away without a will, the surviving spouse is entitled to $50,000 and then half of the remaining value which is $275,000—all together, and the children are entitled to the remaining $225,000.00. This (perhaps) unintended consequence can be avoided by completing a will leaving everything to one’s spouse. Having the basic estate planning documents in place can accomplish many goals, besides the examples given. Estate planning can allow young parents to designate guardians for minor children, trusts for any age disabled person can be included in a will , and the will can provide for the people you want to inherit from you, rather than be confined to the plan delineated in the NY State intestacy statute. Beyond the basic estate planning documents, based on individual circumstances, trust planning can be used as part of estate planning. In conclusion, in today’s ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to take an active role in your own estate planning. In New York, we all have a “default estate plan as laid out by the intestacy statute. That plan is not often the plan we would choose for our families. The most difficult hurdle in completing your own estate planning is the decision to go forward and just do it. You, your family and your loved ones will be glad that you did. The attorneys at Brady & Bader LLP would be happy to assist you with your estate planning, we can be reached at 1-718-945-7777.

Boat Ablaze Garlic Shrimp Pasta By Sharon Feldman

On the evening of Thursday, August 6, there was a fire on the water that sent smoke billowing into the sky. Not far from the ferry dock, a small personal boat went up in flames near Beach 106th Street on Jamaica Bay. Emergency crews arrived on the scene at around 7:20 p.m.

and FDNY quickly worked to put out the blaze. One person on the boat was injured and transported to Nassau Medical Center for treatment. The incident is under investigation and it is not known what caused the fire. Photo by Ian Harbison.

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1-pound uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined 8 ounces of pasta (I used whole wheat) 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoon unsalted butter ½ teaspoon lemon pepper or to taste ½ lemon juiced 1 lemon zested 5 cloves garlic, minced ¼ cup chicken broth (or you could use white wine) 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved (I used multi colored) 2 tablespoons fresh chopped basil Parmesan Reggiano for sprinkling Directions: In a medium bowl, combine the shrimp with the lemon zest,

Heat the olive oil and butter over medium high heat. Add the shrimp mixture to the pan and cook for 3 minutes until the shrimp is pink. Remove from pan. Add the chicken broth (or white wine) to deglaze the pan. Add the tomatoes and stir until just heated. Add the pasta and shrimp back to the pan. Toss to combine. Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

ECMO Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used to treat patients with severe, life-threatening conditions of the heart and lungs. ECMO uses a pump to replace the function of the heart and an oxygenator to perform the work of the lungs. The oxygenator both delivers oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide from the blood. ECMO provides short-term support, allowing the heart and lungs time to recover from damage or injury. The ECMO machine is similar to the heart-lung bypass machine used in open heart surgery. Large tubes called can-

nulas are placed in the legs, neck, or chest and are connected to the ECMO machine. Venous blood, low in oxygen and high in carbon dioxide, is pumped into the ECMO unit where it is oxygenized, and carbon dioxide is removed. Then the blood is warmed and pumped back into a large artery. Small, portable ECMO units are available and are used to keep a patient alive during transport via ambulance or helicopter. ECMO is used in cardiogenic shock, where the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s demand. This may result from a heart

attack, heart failure, pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs), or severe infection like myocarditis (infection of the heart muscle). It is also used to treat respiratory failure where the lungs are not able to properly exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide. This may occur because of chronic lung disease, acute infections like pneumonia, influenza and COVID-19, or acute lung inflammation (acute respiratory distress syndrome or ARDS). ECMO is also used in postoperative heart failure following heart surgery or heart transplant where the heart may be in shock and requires time to recover. It is also used to keep people alive while they await heart or lung transplants. While on ECMO, patients are sedated, intubated on a ventilator, given intravenous nutrition, blood products, and blood thinners. ECMO is intended to be a temporary procedure and there are serious risk factors to be considered. Foremost among the risk factors is bleed-

Page 25 ing. Blood thinners are given to prevent blood clots in the tubing that carries the blood. Bleeding can be life-threatening if it occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, or brain. Even with the use of blood thinners, blood clots can form, albeit rarely, and may cause a stroke. When cannulas are placed in blood vessels in the leg, the circulation to the lower portion of the limb may be compromised necessitating surgery or amputation. Unfortunately, some patients fail to improve on ECMO if their disease is irreversible or does not respond to treatment. However, the use of ECMO gives a critically ill patient a better chance of recovery by providing time for their own organs, or transplanted ones, to recover. If you would like to learn more about ECMO go to the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization at www. elso.org/Resources/Introduction.aspx Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

BE HERE NOW Be Here Now is a square purple book published in 1971. Somehow during my early school days, I got a copy of it in my search for what life is about and for the meaning of it all. All these years later, I finally get it. I get what “be here now meant—to me anyway. Being here now, in whatever you’re doing or not doing, makes what you’re doing or not doing so much more stable, so much more meaningful, so much more peaceful. For example, if you show up

for a yoga class because you want to take classes to feel better and move but when you get to the mat in your home with the video on, you’re distracted. Repeating “be here now over and over again brings your world only to the mat right there, right then. And you can just focus and be with each movement, each breath. Same goes for anything else. Like cooking. If you be there with the food preparation and cooking, it is so much more enjoyable than doing it

while thinking of something else or doing other things in between. And you will infuse your peaceful love into the food you’re making. How about relaxing? Be here now in not doing anything. If you are in the present moment of relaxing, you can really relax, really loosen up and find ease in your body, mind and heart. One of our yoga teachers this morning during class said, “how do you be in the moment if everything is always moving/changing? Love that question and it inspired me to think a little differently on the matter. Well, it really doesn’t matter that everything is in constant change and in constant movement, we can still practice one-pointed focus, one-pointed concentration. Imagine you’re alongside train tracks with an approaching train. In front of the tracks is a beautiful thing—think of anything that is beautiful to you. Allow yourself to study that thing and focus your attention on it. If you are in the moment of studying it,

The Rockaway Times you will sense the train come and go, the train would have passed your sight, but you did not focus on it. “Give your fullest attention to whatever the moment presents. The beautiful thing we have in ourselves to focus on is our breath helping us to be here now. Being in the present moment of whatever we’re doing or not doing can stand on the breath. The breath can be the foundation. Being here now is a conscious practice of living mindfully. There is stability in that focus, in that acceptance of contentment in this moment in time, no matter what it is. “All you really need to do is accept this moment fully. You are then at ease in the here and now and at ease with yourself. (both quotes by Eckhart Tolle, spiritual teacher) May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

The Rockaway Times

By Beth Hanning House Party Etiquette I have a house party every year for the Rockaway Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Each year I say I am not going to have another party because I cannot believe how people do not know how to act in a house as opposed to a bar. I have even had cigarettes stomped out on both my front porch and back deck. During the party, people always see me running around picking up plates and empty cans and bottles and ask me what they can do to help. I always respond with: you can throw away your empties and your

trash or I ask them to do a lap around and pick up trash. I am sure many of us have been to more events at people’s houses the last few months. I know that I have. Instead of meeting for Happy Hour at a local watering hole, we have been meeting at a neighbor’s front porch or back deck and enjoying a few cocktails with friends. Even monumental occasions like graduation parties or baby and wedding showers that were once held at restaurants or catering halls are now being hosted at people’s homes. Some parties have even been elabo-

rately held on the beach. The main thing people need to realize that at many of the events I have attended, and have hosted, is that there are no bartenders, bar backs, waitresses or bus kids. No one is going to come and pick up your empty can of beer or seltzer. You should not just get up to get a fresh beverage without disposing of your previous beverage. Also, keep track of your beverage. Do not wander around talking and forget where you left your drink and go get a new one. I recently went to a party and did a lap for the hosts and a guest asked me if I was working the party. I replied that I was just being considerate. I was even told at a house party by a younger guest to just leave it, the guests will clean it the next day. At the time I was cleaning, you could not see an inch of the countertop due to empty cans. Now according to my research, it is not illegal to vape in a bar. However, it is up to the owner of the establishment to determine whether they al-

Page 27 low it. My house rule is the same: do not smoke an electronic cigarette in my house. I am not a smoker and I do not want e-cigarettes smoked in my home. According to the surgeon general, there are effects from the secondhand smoke that is emitted. I read a few blogs and some people do allow it in their home. If you are an e-smoker, ask before you do it. Do not try to hide it. Never come to a house empty handed. My friend, Christine James, says she was taught to never be able to open a door of a house you are attending because your hands are full. Even if the host says that he or she does not need anything, every house party can use a bag of ice. This of course is different if you are attending an occasion party and you are bringing a gift for the honoree. Anything I missed? Email me at MrsHanning308@ gmail.com. Thank you for all of the emails. I also need ideas. If you have an idea, let me know! Have a great week everyone.

Summer Classic PLAYOFFS ON TAP Playoff time is here at the St. Francis Summer Classic. The high school divisions finished their regular season Monday, August 10, with quarterfinals played on Wednesday. Mullin Basketball Camp goes in as the top seed for the boys with NYBS Mechanical leading the girls. Semi-finals are scheduled for Monday, August 17. The girls championship is Wednesday, August 19 at 8:30 p.m. and the boys will play for

the coveted long sleeve tees on Thursday, August 20 at 7:15 p.m. It was a wild night as the Men's Open wrapped up on Tuesday, with both undefeateds taking their first loss. It is always extra heated when brothers go against each other, whether the Hurleys, the Gauvards, or on Tuesday, the Goldbergs. Alex' ASAP C Merch rose to the challenge to inflict Patrick's Jameson's squad with their first loss. A suddenly dan-

gerous Village Saloon finally appeared with their whole team to stun Kennedy's. Tonight's (Thursday) quarterfinals has at 7:00 ASAP-Caiazzo and Jameson's-Village Saloon. At 8:15 p.m., Kennedy's-Harbor Light and Trends By Meg-The Cabana go at it. Semifinals are Tuesday and the championship is Thursday, August 20 at 8:30 p.m.. Women's quarterfinals are tonight (Thursday) with semifinals on Tues-

day and the championship on Wednesday, August 19 at 7:15 p.m. Jameson's is the favorite but not definitively. The grammar school divisions continue on and will accelerate play once the Open and High School divisions are complete. Please remember to bring and wear your mask to watch the action. Come to the main gate to get a mask if you forget to bring one with you.

WrestleTalk NEW JERSEY OR BUST?? By Eric Jayden

Here are the results from the August 3, newly announced "WWE Raw Underground" show coming from the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. Apollo Crews defeated MVP Liv Morgan/ Ruby Riott defeated The IIonic's Akira Tozawa def R. Truth and Shelton Benjamin to win the 24/7 Title Sasha Banks vs Shayna Baszler went to a No-Contest Angel Garza defeared Angelo Dawkins Andrade versus Montez Ford went to a No-Contest The WWE introduced a new concept called Raw Underground, which would have an Underground Fight Club feel. The ring has no ropes and the venue looks like it's in the basement of a warehouse. Some

wrestlers are dressed in street clothes, some are dressed in their ring gear and some are dressed in MMA gear. The matches appear to be contested in Street Fight rules format. The announcement was made by Shane McMahon. We hope to see if this concept works out in the coming months as the WWE can use a boost in creativity and storylines to keep the fans attracted to a slowly failing product. Today, we will talk about Pro Wrestling Shows in New Jersey. It appears that many Independent Promotions from the TriState Area have been or plan to run shows in New Jersey. The reason for this is that the state of New Jersey has deregulated Pro Wrestling for many years now, which makes it a lot easier to run shows in the state. With many other states having strict rules or not allowing pro wrestling at this time, many area promotions have been heading towards

New Jersey. Now, this is not to say that during this era of Covid-19, precautionary measures are not taken. All promotions hold events outside with social distancing rules, mask requirements and provide hand sanitizers for the fans. The wrestlers are pre-checked and temperature checked before performing. Promotions like Game Changer Wrestling, Impact Championship Wrestling, Titan Championship Wrestling and a host of others have been running shows in New Jersey, especially in the Atlantic City area. The Atlantic City area is currently on a rebound from the lockdown due to Covid-19 and appears to be the prime area to hold professional wrestling shows due to the hotels, casinos and the busy boardwalk. I look forward to the day when Pro Wrestling returns full time in all the states. The question of the week comes from Margaret H. in Far

Rockaway and she asked, "What are your thoughts about New Japan Pro Wrestling? Great question, Margaret. I happen to be a huge fan of NJPW. This is a company that is very reputable in Japan and is known throughout the world. Many superstars off today and yesterday have either spent time or started their careers in NJPW. They have a strong style concept which is hard-hitting with fast paced action. I look forward to NJPW returning back to American TV. WrestleTalk would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of James Harris known as WWE Superstar Kamala. RIP in the Big Ring in the sky and thank you for your many years of entertainment. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com you can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy. Have a great week!
