Caribbean Carnival Comes To Far Rock on Saturday
Natasha Wilson
Get ready to feel like you’re in the Caribbean this weekend. Senator James Sanders Jr. will present the 2nd Annual Caribbean Carnival in Far Rockaway, this Saturday, August 18, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a parade of colors, complete with entertainers: Lord Nelson, Poser, MC Wassy, Natasha Wilson, Lady Sparkles and Chucky & LiveWire. After Rockaway’s debut Caribbean Carnival last year drew

in more than 5,000 visitors, Senator James Sanders decided to do it all again, but bigger and better. On Saturday, head
down to Beach 20th Street to watch as Carnival kicks off the day with a parade featuring floats, steel pan bands, moko
jumbies (stilt walkers) and plenty of colorful costumes. The parade will head to Bayswater Park, located at 701 Beach 32nd Street, where the party will continue with an unforgettable lineup of performers. Lady Sparkles, a groovy soca and R&B singer, will be making her first Rockaway Carnival appearance. “This is a good look for Rockaway because they need a Carnival,” Lady Sparkle said. “Everybody is so in their little circles and everyone needs to come out and be together.” Lady Sparkle performs in Carnivals nationwide and said she enjoys entertaining. “I think Senator Sanders has taken a chance, not being closed in, when he came up with the idea, he was willing to open up and say, 'Let’s do Continued on page 3

Also performing is soca group, Chucky & LiveWire, the two-man band that performed at Carnival last year. “I enjoy doing it and we have to bring a change to the community. That is the reason why I’m coming back this year,” Floyd Lalgie, who is the group’s other half as LiveWire, said. Lalgie is a regular performer at the annual West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn. He said the Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways has a different energy with the Senator involved, bringing the community together. Lord Nelson is affectionately called one of the world’s most loveable and internationally sought out calypsonians. He has always been categorized as revolutionary. He incorporates the roots and

rhythms for African drums, R&B, American Jazz, Latin, and various other Caribbean styles. While deployed in the Army over in North Korea, he discovered his talent when he performed just for fun in front of his fellow troops. Born Robert Nelson, Lord Nelson has traveled the world from Europe to Scandinavia, and South America to the Caribbean. In 1982, his classic song “Meh Lover,” made Caribbean music history. To this day, he continues to receive awards for this song, and
ranks as one of the top 25 greatest soca hits. Lord Nelson serves as the cultural ambassador to Trinidad & Tobago. Poser, whose real name is Sylvester Zachary Lockhart, got the music bug when he began playing the steel pan in his youth during the 1960s. He didn’t begin singing professionally until 1979 when he won the Road March title with the song, “Ah Tell She.” Poser is one of the top Soca Parang Calypsonians in his genre and is connected to the Kaiso House Calypso tent. Wassy (Christopher Collins Bowen) has hosted hundreds of functions, shows and parades around the world including the International Brass fest in Trinidad & Tobago, and the West Indian American Day parade in New York, and now he’s coming to Rockaway as Carnival’s MC. Singer Natasha Wilson hails from Trinidad & Tobago, and the songbird will be among many, stunning female-talent showcased at the

Her most recently released single is “Love de Road.” The Carnival is presented in partnership with the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA), Rockaway Development Revitalization Corporation (RDRC), New York City Parks Department, New York Police Department's 101st Police Precinct and Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways Committee Members. Teen Shot by Police After Firing Into Crowd
On Friday, August 11, police shot and wounded a 15-yearold boy in Far Rockaway after the teen fired a gun into a crowd and refused to drop his weapon upon request. According to the New York Post, the teen, identified as Rashid Zahid-Abeurra, allegedly fired a gun in the direction of a group of people amidst a fight that spilled onto the street from a house par-

ty near Redfern Avenue and Nameoke Street, at around 11 p.m. on Friday. Police had arrived on the scene in response to a disturbance at the house. Upon witnessing the teen fire the gun, they asked him to drop his weapon several times, but he did not comply. As a result, the cops fired at the suspect several times. A Smith & Wesson handgun was recovered at the scene. Two police officers involved were taken to South Nassau Hospital for evaluation, but it is believed they were not injured. The teen was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he was listed as in stable condition. On Saturday, the young man was arrested and charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm.

Body of Woman Found After Suspected Drowning On Tuesday, August 14, at around 11:30 a.m., a body was discovered floating in Jamaica Bay by Beach 108th Street. The body is believed to be that of 35-year-old Anna Clarke, who went missing in a suspected drowning at Bayswater Point State Park on Sunday, August 12. Rescue crews searched into the night on Sunday after Clarke reportedly got swept into the bay and disappeared on Sunday evening. The details of how this happened vary. Early information, as reported by NBC, says Clarke was walking along the shore, when she was swept into the water by an unexpected wave. According to the New York Daily News, Clarke was standing in waist-deep water when she was pulled under by a rip current. A CBS report says that Clarke was in the water, trying to cross the channel, when she became
distressed and sank below the water. CBS also reported that Owen Miller, Clarke’s father, claimed that his daughter did not know how to swim and was just starting to learn. Bayswater Point State Park is not a designated swim area and there are no lifeguards on duty. Different reports say that either Clarke’s husband or a bystander attempted to save the woman, but were unable to. Emergency responders were searching the water shortly after 5 p.m. and the search went until it got dark after 8 p.m. The search resumed the next day, but a body was not discovered until late Tuesday morning, five miles from where Clarke disappeared. According to the New York Post, when Clarke’s body was recovered, NYPD divers discovered she had trauma to the head. A medical examiner will determine how Clarke died.

DON RIEPE IS THE CHAMP OF THE RT PHOTO CONTEST More than a thousand photos were entered in the 2018 Rockaway Times Photo Contest. The contest has grown in popularity each year and has drawn the attention of the huge summer crowds which descend upon the beach. After an initial round of judging in the spring, a Top 30 was chosen and those selected were enlarged to poster-size and affixed to various public spaces (the boardwalk, the ferry landing and the Broad Channel Park). Thanks to the generosity of the Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy, NYC Ferry, and the NYC Parks Department additional photos (favorites of The Rockaway Times staff ) got poster treatment and were put on display as well. Two weekends ago, the Top 30 was narrowed down to a Top 15 after a round of judging in which the public was invited to pick their favorites. On Sunday, August 12, judges and finalists met at Caracas on the boardwalk for the grand finale. First, a Top 3 was named. Mar-
gie Daly’s turtle shot and Paul Richter’s Santas on the boardwalk were selected with Don Riepe’s Jamaica Bay swan shot. The turtle photo by Margie was named top runner-up and Don Riepe’s awesome swan pic taken in Broad Channel was declared the Best of 2018. Riepe not only gets bragging rights, but he’ll receive the Grand Prize of a $500 check from The Rockaway Times. The runners-up got an assortment of consolation prizes. Congrats to all! And next year’s contest is already being planned. The National Park Service has stated its interest in getting involved and John Cori, who organizes and essentially runs the contest, announced that the 2019 contest will include a Poseidon Parade category —so get your cameras (and phones) ready for the September event. In the meantime, this is a great time of year to take beach shots, and sunsets, and ferry rides and well, you know —get out there and have photos ready for the 2019 Rockaway Times Photo Contest!
On Sunday, Don Riepe was named the grand prize winner of the Photo Contest.

***** Congratulations to Don Riepe who submitted the winning photo in The 2018 Rockaway Times Photo Contest. Don’s winning photo is of swans on Jamaica Bay. The Jamaica Bay connection doesn’t end there. Don’s not only a great photographer, but a guardian of Jamaica Bay and has led environmental efforts to protect that vital body of water for years. ***** Plans for next year’s contest are underway. The Poseidon Parade will be a category and photos or portraits of our treasured seniors will be another. Got a great photo of grandma or grandpa? Save it (or take one now!) and then send it in next year. Photos should be taken in Rockaway (or Broad Channel or from the
THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2018 ferry). Meanwhile, you can send photos to Mail@Rockawaytimes.com if you’d like to be in our Local Color feature. Those photos are still eligible for future contests. ***** The Board of Standards and Appeals hearing for The Harbor Light has been adjourned. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 14, the next meeting is now set for Thursday, September 27. Sad to say, this will be just about a month shy of the SIXTH anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Belle Harbor won’t be fully back until the Harbor Light is up and running. ***** Some television outlets gave nice coverage to local firefighter, Louis Dym, for rescuing a pregnant woman at a Brooklyn fire last Thursday. We’d like to add our salute: Great job, Louis! ***** New York’s famed Summerstage Concert Series is making its way to Rockaway Beach for the first time. The Chicago
Page 7
dance-pop duo, Gilligan Moss, will headline the concert at the Beach 94th Street Plaza on Friday, August 17. The free show will take place from 6-9 p.m. ***** The NYPD is looking for crossing guards. The pay is $13.50 an hour but the real draw is health benefits. You get them by working 20+ hours a week. Go to crossingguard@ nypdonline.org to apply. Oh, and you get to keep kids safe! ***** The 2nd Annual Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways, is Saturday, August 18 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with entertainers Lord Nelson, Poser, MC Wassy, Natasha Wilson, Lady Sparkles and Chucky & LiveWire. It starts at Beach 20th Street and Seagirt Boulevard and ends at Bayswater Park on Beach 32nd Street. ***** NYC Ferry has added a Bronx stop as part of the ferry system. We’re all for expanding ferry service but they’ve got to get enough boats first. The current fleet is not ade-
quately serving riders. ***** As we went to press, authorities finished the search for a woman that allegedly drowned at Bayswater Park on Sunday evening. The body of 35-year-old Anna Clarke was found in Jamaica Bay at around Beach 108th at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14. Our thoughts go out to her family. ***** The early morning weather looked like it would wipe out the Volleyball Playoffs last Saturday, but the rain held off and actually created ideal conditions. The sand was cool (we’ve had years where players suffered burns on their feet and needed medical attention) and the rest of Riis Park was empty so the league had the place to itself. Congrats to all the champs. Now, the burning question is, where will the league call home next year? Volleyball leaders have had issues with Riis.

Suspect Arrested in Bayswater Hit-and-Run An 11-year-old Far Rockaway boy was riding his bike on Monday evening, when he was hit by a speeding sedan, and the driver fled the scene. Fortunately, due to the work of the Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol and the NYPD, by the next day, the suspect hitand-run driver was behind bars. Richard Glanville was riding through an intersection at Healy Avenue and Dickens Street in Bayswater at around 7:40 p.m. on August 13, when he was hit by a black sedan, sending his body into the windshield and flipping over the car, before landing in the middle of the street. Instead of stopping to see if the child was okay, the driver of the sedan kept going and was nowhere to be found after the incident. However, the whole thing was caught on video surveillance cameras, allowing police to identify the car involved. On Tuesday, there was a
manhunt for the suspected driver of the vehicle and by the afternoon, the search was over. According to volunteer organization, Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol, members of their patrol were able to locate the alleged vehicle used
in the accident a few blocks away on Bay 28 and Sunnyside Streets. The vehicle matched the description and also had a shattered windshield that was covered with garbage bags. NYPD was alerted and soon after, 41-year-old Agostinho Sinclair, of Far Rockaway, was arrested on charges that included leaving the scene of an accident, reckless endangerment and aggravated unlicensed operator of a motor vehicle. According to various reports, Glanville, the young boy, was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center by EMS to be treated for lacerations and internal injuries. He was listed in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Despite the pain, Glanville appeared to be in good spirits after the incident as he gave CBS2 news a thumbs up on camera. Glanville’s family is not taking the incident so light. CBS2 also showed Glanville’s
mom and grandmother giving the suspect grief as he was removed from the 101st Precinct and put into a police vehicle while cuffed. “It was his 11th birthday, you should have stopped,” Glanville’s grandmother was shown saying to Sinclair. Photos by Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol.

Project Prithvi Exhibit Opens at the Wildlife Refuge An exhibit showing the transformation of religious offerings collected from monthly cleanups at Jamaica Bay will be on display at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center starting Aug. 19. The exhibit will be up for about two months. Sadhana, a non-profit organization, has been organizing monthly cleanups near the Joseph Addabbo Memorial Bridge (formerly the North Channel Bridge). The cleanups, held between April and November, began in 2013. Sadhana has been building a progressive Hindu coalition in New York City since 2011.
Project Prithvi is Sadhana’s grassroots green initiative in which members practice ahimsa (non-violence) by taking care of the environment. Sadhana was awarded the Reuse and Repair Grant through Citizens Committee for New York City and utilized it to hold art workshops at the Wildlife Refuge in the spring of 2018. Participants of these workshops refurbished items collected from the monthly cleanups. This exhibit includes “before” photographs of the items as they looked after being picked up. Their transformation is displayed in the items themselves. Through this exhibit, Sadhana hopes to move devotees to worship in more eco-friendly ways, and to raise awareness among the broader public that the items are offerings being made by devotees and not people who have no respect for nature and
to document other activities that are performed by Sadhana. All items on display were once part of Hindu religious ceremonies, or “pujas,” and were therefore religious offerings. They are presented in this exhibit solely for artistic purposes. Gateway National Recreation Area, National Park Service, has worked closely with Sadhana for the cleanups, providing
guidance, support and supplies. An opening reception will be held Sunday, August 19, 2 to 4 p.m. There will also be a meet and greet with the exhibit creators and with members of Sadhana. Refreshments will be served. The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is located at 175-10 Cross Bay Blvd. in Broad Channel.

New Art Space Shows What It Means to Be ‘Resilient’ Rockaway is a place that inspires art, and there can never be too much of it. A new, unique art space has opened this summer, which is currently hosting an exhibit that reflects something Rockaway knows well—Resilience. Earlier this summer, HeadHi (544 Beach 72nd Street), a new art space, opened up to the community, presenting an exhibit called “De Noche/ At Night” in July. The organizers don’t call the space, which is located in the back of a 19th century house in Arverne, an “art gallery,” but rather “a space for reunion, to discover, to share ideas and have a dialogue about humans and the environment.” In addition to displaying various art, HeadHi provides information about the oceans, pollution and recycling as well as a list of local groups working on a va-
riety of projects to protect and conserve the environment. In following this theme, HeadHi debuted its most recent art exhibit called “Resilient” on August 11. “Resilient” features the work of multi-national artists including Brian Kauppi, Basia Goszczynska, Vicente Muñoz and Esteban Chacón, and their take on what it is to be resilient. In his artworks, Brian Kau-
ppi, a nomadic artist who paints plein aire landscapes, bends and reconfigures the horizon in response to inner dialogue or distraction. Routinely drawing straight lines led him to make his horizontal brushstrokes diverge and intersect as if in conversation or competition with his own mind. Embracing chaos, hardship and nature in transition as part of life, we are left with the notion that even the worst moments will eventually pass. Kauppi is an American artist living in Chile. Collecting washed up and weathered marine debris, Basia Goszczynska’s tall, cylindrical sculptures reference geological samples, totem poles, and shish kabobs. Cores 1 - 4 are pillarlike sculptures built from locally gathered beach waste that serves to illustrate the material legacy of capitalism and consumerism. The sculptures invite the viewers to reflect back on their personal consumption habits and what we can do to make this a better place for all. Goszczynska is an artist based in New York City originally from Poland. Vicente Muñoz has created small scale replicas of the old boardwalk left after Superstorm Hurricane Sandy landed in Rockaway in 2012. Like a skeleton or backbone, these
structural elements of the boardwalk remained a visual reminder of architecture’s vulnerability to climate change as well as a symbol of community resilience. Muñoz’s work addresses form, light and space
using sculpture and photography. Vicente is from Ecuador, but he lives and works in New York City. Esteban Chacón, who lives in Costa Rica, demonstrates the physical ability to endure the elements of seawater and sun for long hours as an avid surfer. His understanding of the ocean and experiences spending time between the tropical coastline of Costa Rica and the urban jungle of New York City form a story relating daily objects and the body that only he can tell. Using wood burning and embroidery techniques, his artworks require precision and time. This is the last weekend to check out “Resilient.” There will be an open viewing from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19. HeadHi is located at 544 Beach 72nd Street and Burchell Ave. in Arverne. For more information on HeadHi, check out Headhi.net or Headhi_ny on Instagram.

Fine Photos Dear Editor: Thank you to The Rockaway Times for running the annual photo contest. The pictures this year were extraordinary and really give a unique touch to the boardwalk. Each group seems to just suddenly appear, offering delightful, unexpected art. I did not submit an entry but I am eager to do so as I understand there will be another contest in 2019. With closed beaches being a major headache, the photo contest is at least a bright light. Congratulations to all the people who had their fine work displayed. Erin Taylor

“Six thousand dollars,” said the special education lawyer, I came to see regarding starting the process to make the NYC Department of Education (DOE) pay for my daughter to attend private school. “Six thousand dollars!” I exclaimed. “Yes, $6K is what it would cost just for you to get the private evaluations needed to prove that the DOE District 75 schools are not providing what your daughter needs to excel academically and socially. A wave of exhaustion came over me as I sat dumbfounded across the lawyer. Local Rockaway resident, Regina Skyer, author of the books, “How to Survive Turning 5” and “What Do You Do After High School" is a leading special education lawyer known for her passionate advocacy of special needs children. She not only knows the current law, but shares her knowledge of existing schools, programs and services in order to effectively guide parents, in what can otherwise be an overwhelming process. In her initial consultation with parents she presents options, explains the legal process and helps plan an initial strategy. I developed a relationship with Skyer through this column. She reached out to me and graciously offered an initial free consultation, (which normally costs about $450), on the private school education process. She explained that because children
with disabilities are entitled to a free and appropriate public education, under federal law, the DOE must pay for an appropriate private special education school, if it is proven that public schools are not serving your child equitably. Most private schools cost upwards of $35K per year. To complicate matters further, parents have to attend a hearing, armed with proof that public schools are failing their child. If even a parent wins the case, sometimes they have to pay the tuition upfront and wait to be reimbursed by the DOE. “Judging from the little progress your daughter has made in her four years at public school, she desperately needs more. I suggest you either move to a better school district such as in Long Island, or get the DOE to pay for private school,” Skyer said. I thanked Skyer, and left her office in a daze. Blimey! Where in the blasted bubble were we going to get $6K? I could pawn my wedding band, but then again I was hoping to give it to my daughter, when she turned 18. Also for her dad, this might add insult to injury, as I accidentally flushed the first ring set down the toilet within six months of being married. Seriously, it was an accident! I could sell my beloved vintage clothing collection, but then again not many people have a size 24 waist. Listen, I am not boasting, especially since 32-24-35 body measurements does not exactly conjure up the image of the voContinued on page 17

luptuous Kim Kardashian. Think Ariana Grande. I drove home depressed and bewildered. Suppose we drummed up the money for the evaluations, and still got rejected for private school by the DOE? However, “Oh ye of little faith! The Almighty does work in mysterious ways. I met a dynamic woman, Dr. Alisha Griffith, who wears many hats. She is the mother of a handsome 12-year-old boy on the autism spectrum. She also is a professionally-trained educator, speech language pathologist and audiologist. She recently authored the best-selling book, “Au-mazing Gift: A Journey To Autism Acceptance. When I relayed my conundrum with Griffith, she exclaimed, “You got this! Be a maverick, a noisemaker. You are your child’s best advocate. March into the the DOE’s office and demand what you need for your daughter. If they give you
THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2018 any opposition, shake them down, advised Griffith. She rallied on. “You don’t have the money now, but in the interim take all the steps needed to make your voice heard and demands met. Demand that your daughter gets speech therapy five times a week, instead of three. You have to be tough and strong. I had to do the same for my son, said Dr. Ali. Folks, it’s time for us as a community to be noisemakers and mobilize to get exactly what we need for our children. Whether it is admission to a specific school, local job opportunities and more accessible recreational activities, we can make it happen if we band together as a community, willing to roll up our sleeves and do the necessary work. Stay tuned for date and venue of the next Rockaway Beach Autism Families group meeting! For further information, and/or to share your thoughts and stories, email ourartisticchild@outlook. com or check out Facebook page, Rockaway Beach Autism Families.
FREE LEGAL HELP FROM ADDABBO State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. is coordinating with the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) to bring their free Mobile Legal Help Center to the Rockaways. On Friday, September 7, the Mobile Legal Help Center will be stationed outside of Addabbo’s Rockaway office, located at 88-08 Rockaway Beach Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to assist residents with legal issues, all free of charge. The issues the representatives at the Mobile Legal Help Center can handle are: Tenant housing issues, foreclosure; Disability benefits, public benefits, and healthcare benefits; Identity theft, consumer credit, debt management; Domestic violence, custody, child support and divorce; Immigration; Superstorm Sandy; Employment and advanced planning. However, if an issue is brought up that is outside of the expertise of the legal su-
pervisors in the Mobile Legal Help Center, the issue will be brought back to NYLAG to be addressed by an attorney in that field. This ensures that everyone can get the legal assistance they need. “Being a former practicing attorney, I understand the hurdles that come along with trying to find good legal assistance. By partnering with the New York Legal Assistance Group, I hope to alleviate some of these issues for my constituents, all at no cost to them, Addabbo said. “The experienced legal experts at NYLAG will be able to give advice and counsel on a wide variety of issues, right on site. Space is limited for this free service and an appointment is required. Appointments are made on a first-come first-serve basis. FROM THE NPS PADDLING OUT TO A NEW PERSPECTIVE By Erin Schoppmeyer, NPS Park Ranger
Rockaway is known for its beaches, but how much do you know about the bay side of the peninsula? Jamaica Bay is a wetland estuary teeming with life. Diamondback terrapins, horseshoe crabs, and peregrine falcons are just a few of the species of animals that call Jamaica Bay home. The flora of the bay is equally as fascinating. Spartina alterniflora, or smooth cordgrass, is one of my heroes within the bay. This salt marsh plant helps prevent erosion and provides invaluable protection against storm surges. There are many ways to get to know the bay up close and personal, but my favorite is to go kayaking. No kayak? No problem. Gateway National Recreation Area offers free kayaking programs that fit all skill levels. Whether you’ve never set foot in one of these lightweight boats or you’ve got countless miles pad-
dled under your belt, there’s a trip for you. Making sure I could put my money where my mouth was, I got out on the water recently as an incognito ranger for the park's JoCo Marsh Excursion. The description in our program guide promised participants would “see the thriving salt marsh with the backdrop of one of the world's busiest airports, on this energetic excursion from Bayswater Park through JoCo Creek.” I met up with Ranger John Daskalakis and his crew and approximately 30 excited visitors to get out and paddle. Ranger John and his team have a positive energy, and it is easy to see it is contagious. The staff made sure everyone was equipped with a life vest, paddle, and the confidence to hit the water. The trip afforded many wildlife sightings including herons, turtles, and acrobatic tree swallows. For me, however, the best part of the excursion had to be when we got up close to the
runways of JFK. Watching giant airlines take off overhead was spellbinding. I knew I was not alone in this as I glanced around and watched my fellow kayakers observing in awe along with me. I left feeling refreshed and with a renewed appreciation of the bay. Upcoming Kayaking Programs Please note, unless stated, all programs require a reservation that can be made by calling 718338-3799. All programs are FREE. Riis Landing Walk-up and Paddle Riis Landing, Queens Sundays through August 26, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Kayaking for beginners. Open to the public, ages 6 and up with an adult. No reservation required. Rockaway Cove Paddle Riis Landing, Queens Wednesday, August 22, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Paddle to Rockaway Point and back. This trip follows the scenic
bay shore of the Rockaway Peninsula along the cove toward Rockaway Point. Big Fishkill Channel Excursion Floyd Bennett Field, Seaplane Ramp Thursday August 23, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Paddle across island channel, loop around Canarsie Pol and return along North Channel with the outgoing tide. Big Egg Marsh Excursion Beach 88th Street kayak launch, Rockaway Beach Wednesday, August 29, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Kayak from this exciting new launch site with a National Park ranger to Big Egg Marsh, and learn about the salt marsh and view wildlife that call Jamaica Bay home. Addiction is a horrible thing. It robs you of your most valuable asset: your soul. Rockaway goes through spurts of having to deal with this problem, and the problem takes many forms. Sometimes people don’t like to talk about it because of shame or fear, but if not dealt with, it can destroy lives. I am a big believer that it’s ok, no actually necessary, to talk about. There are many programs around to help deal with the issue, some work, some no matter how good the intention, never take hold. I am no expert on this topic, but I know enough to be thankful. I have seen members of my family and extended family deal with the issue; some successfully and some not. Sometimes it’s accompanied with some form of mental illness. These situations are especially hard. The only way to deal with all of this is with love and education. Being educated about the condition and the many resources available can make a difference. In addition, the earlier identified and dealt with the better. Some kids are just different, and that’s ok. But they need love and direction. Not everyone fits into a nice mold, some literally move to the beat of a different drummer. Those differences make life worth living, but the differences hopefully can be channeled into positive, life affirming work, not the dark business of addiction. For parents and siblings, it can be really hard. There are support groups, and I think professional help is really the only way to go sometimes. We
are very lucky in Rockaway that most residents know each other and look out for each other. Gentle directional help pushes kids along their way, even when they seem to be straying off the path. We are equally blessed to have people in our midst who have gone through hell and want to give back to help others through the process. There are so many fine organizations that provide places for kids to be creative, athletic or just spend time doing something fun. All the basketball leagues, Little League baseball games, and programs that keep kids focused. Places like the Rockaway Artist Alliance (RAA) provide wonderfully creative outlets for kids to have fun and to explore the arts. The thing that makes us who we are is very deep inside of us. Yes, there is DNA mixed in, and friends and family play a huge role, but there is something that is injected into our cosmic life that defines us: our soul. Addiction is insidious because it robs us from that very essence. And sometimes the theft is complete, robbing the very life from an individual, depriving the family and the world from knowing that beautiful glittering thing that is a person. So, I realize this is a bit heavy for a late summer article, but there is no better time of year than to hug your kids, your spouse, your family and friends, and tell them that you love them. They have given you the greatest gift of all, they have shared their soul with us all. And we are all wealthier because of it. RIP K.R.H. You were loved.

Ziggy the dog is learning some new tricks, with his owner, Kathy Zimmer, by his side, sporting The Rock Times tee. Zimmer has been bringing Ziggy to Hoboken for training with Pack Leader Dogs led by Dog Behavior Expert and assistant trainer of Cesar Milan’s, Steve Del Savio. According to Zimmer, “Ziggy has been aggressive towards dogs and biting. During his first meeting with Steve, within the first 30 minutes Steve had him walking with other dogs, side by side. I couldn’t believe it. Steve is really a Pack leader and knows his stuff.

Update On Screening The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is a quasi-governmental group that makes recommendations to clinicians regarding screening for certain diseases. I have previously written about their recommendations for screening men for prostate cancer. Recently their recommendations changed somewhat so I thought it would be a good idea to update you. In the U.S., the lifetime risk of a man being diagnosed with prostate cancer is about 13 percent and the lifetime risk of dying from it is 2.5 percent. The average age of
death from prostate cancer is 80. Many men with prostate cancer never have any symptoms so, without screening, they would never know they had it. African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer have an increased risk of developing it. In 2012, the USPSTF made a blanket recommendation to stop screening all men for prostate cancer with PSA blood tests. This recommendation to stop screening was based on their observation that there was a great deal of both overdiagnosis and overtreatment, not to mention

misdiagnosis of prostate cancer. As anyone who has ever had one can tell you, prostate biopsies are very unpleasant procedures. In addition, the treatment of prostate cancer can lead to unpleasant side effects including sexual, urinary, and bowel dysfunction. Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer after age 70 are likely to have a very benign disease course and it is very unlikely that the cancer will cause their demise. Yet many of these men, once diagnosed, are subjected to surgery and/or radiation treatments that may cause all sorts of problems. One in five men who undergo radical prostatectomy will develop long-term urinary incontinence and two in three men will develop erectile dysfunction after surgery. Adequate evidence shows that the harms of screening in men older than 70 are at least moderate and greater than in younger men because of increased risk of false-positive results, diagnostic harms
The Rockaway Times from biopsies, and harms from treatment. Therefore, the USPSTF concludes that the harms from screening men over 70 outweigh the benefits of screening. The USPSTF has somewhat softened their recommendations for screening men age 55 to 69. Previously their recommendation was to not screen these men at all. The new recommendation is that these men should only be screened if they express a desire for the screening. If men in this age group do not request PSA screening, then it should not be routinely performed. The USPSTF maintains their previous recommendation that men aged 70 and over should not be screened with PSA testing. EMPATHY In our yoga practice, we bring to mind the connection to the heart chakra “anahata” and its attributes to be loving and compassionate. Loving and compassionate to ourselves, our families, friends, community, outer world, animals, plants - all living things. This is a feeling “toward” ourselves, others and other things. Empathy is a feeling of connection and feeling “with” the other. It is very different. When I am really open, I “feel with” the mama orca that is pushing her deceased baby, or the
young woman who just lost her husband, or the baby who is crying in desperation. This opens us to be sensitive and to have an experience that is vulnerable and soft. Feeling deeply through some other sorrow is very humbling, emotional and therapeutic. It allows us to examine our own similar experiences and feelings and connect to the other in a profound way. In relationships, by being empathetic towards someone else’s negative feeling, we may be able to learn some-
thing about that person that we didn’t know (reason for the negative feeling), understand where it is coming from, and then let it go - not letting it get in the way of the relationship. If someone is projecting anger or fear or jealousy or envy or greed, what is the reason for it? Can you have the conversation or conversations to get to that, have a mutual understanding and let it go? With time. And maybe sometimes yes, sometimes no; and sometimes with some people, and sometimes not. But it is worth thinking about and trying because the front we put up thinking about a negative feeling from someone or a negative response becomes hurtful to ourselves. And the energy we use to “engage” in the conflict can best be used for something else. A friend recently sent me some interesting excerpts, which are enlightening: “Blame contributes more negative energy to any situation, makes everything worse, and never helps anything.” “We each create our own
Page 27 experience. We each generate our own feelings with our own thoughts, whether we ever consciously realize this or not.” It is also freeing to think about these two ideas. Taking blame out of any situation, frees the way to think, analyze and be more at ease. Understanding that our thought and verbal action is a result of our own experiences can make way for more positive results in distressful situations. The passing of time definitely helps to see these ideas more clearly. Know that with time and energetic, creative thought, we can feel empathy to even those from whom we may feel affronted, leading to understanding and then hopefully a common ground. Taking the time to think rather than being indifferent or just letting things fester leads to a happier inner life. Balance. Calmness. Serenity. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Birthday Love
Happy birthday to my beloved Grace. The big 39. Another candle on your cake, but it's so much more than that. Another year of amazing memories, inside jokes, uncontrollable laughter, crazed children, demented dogs, unhinged cats, humpbacked lizards, rude turtles, and whistling guinea pigs, but more importantly, another year of having you by
my side each and every day. I spent days upon days thinking about what in the world I could possibly do for you that would make this birthday amazing. I spent hours upon hours trying to figure out what in the world to get a woman who gives me everything. Nothing could compare. Nothing was as sincere as me wishing you a happy day, not just on your birthday, but every day. (I guess that would make it a whole bunch of Happy Un-birthdays!) It's simple, your happiness is my happiness. Sometimes I imagine what life would have been like if we hadn’t met that fateful day back in Kate Cassidy's on Woodhaven Boulevard. Would I be the same man I am now? Probably not. I’d probably be a lesser, more miserable version of myself. I would probably still be wandering the world, not unlike Diogenes, searching for that missing part of me that only you can fill. I would know deep down that
there’s someone out there for me that I hadn’t met. It was only on the day you blew into my life like a storm, that my life actually began. And here we are now, a quarter century later and your winds of change are blowing just as strongly now as back then. Happy birthday gorgeous, and looking forward to a bright future with more birthdays to come, and yes, you will always be: "My beloved, she who must be obeyed!" Speaking of storms, with over two months of the season gone by, we have slowly drifted into the peak of our 2018 Hurricane season in the Atlantic basin. This time of year, the clusters of t-storms that are nearly almost always present around the equator have the highest likelihood of developing into an organized storm...a tropical depression, a tropical storm or a hurricane. Thus far, our Atlantic basin has experienced four named storms - Subtropical Storm Alberto (May 25 through
May 31), Hurricane Beryl (July 5 through July 16), Hurricane Chris (July 6 through July 12), and, Tropical Storm Debby (August 7 through August 9). Only Subtropical Storm Albert actually made landfall in the U.S. when it came ashore on the Gulf Coast and swept across Laguna Beach, Florida back on May 28. Hurricanes Beryl and Chris, as well as Tropical Storm Debby, stayed well offshore our coast. Present conditions in the ocean and the atmosphere are such that they are indicating a less active Atlantic hurricane season than initially predicted back in May. Seasonal forecasters with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center have increased the likelihood of a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season to 60 percent (up from 25 percent in May) in their Continued on page 29

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES Continued from Page 28 updated outlook, issued just last week. The likelihood of a near-normal season is now at 30 percent, and the chance of an above-normal season has dropped from 35 percent to 10 percent. An average sixmonth hurricane season produces 12 named storms, of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. That being said, none of us
should construe this new climate forecast data to mean the threat of a significant storm is no longer a serious concern. Keep in mind that 95 percent of all intense hurricane activity occurs from August through October, as such it is without a doubt, storm activity will pick up as we move through these months of peak activity. Remember, it only takes one bad storm to ruin your day! Broad Channel, who would want to live anywhere else?

By Shane Kulman Dear Enchantress, If I could whine this whole message to you, I would. I have been with my boyfriend forever, almost eight years, and he has not said, "I love you," to me. I am boiling over in emotions over the thought of if this is important or not. I know he loves me, he does amazing things for me, and is a great boyfriend. We are kind of old fashioned even though we are young. I want him to say it first, before I say it, and I've only asked him in silly ways, "do ya love me?" And he always gets serious and quiet or changes the subject. It's really hard to hold back from saying it, it comes so naturally for me, and it's so frustrating, espe-
cially in moments that are SO romantic, or at least I think it is. How can I get him to say these precious words to me? Does it really matter anyway? How can I get what I want, and be clear about it, and not make him angry at me? I think it's normal to experience this, right? Dear Loveless, Oh dear. Right off the bat, if you are taking the time to write to me about hearing these three precious words, then they matter to you. It's normal for you to want to hear these words, even if no one else does. If you discuss this with others, and are out taking surveys if this is important to you, it shows you
YOU ARE INVITED To a Public Information Meeting about Proposed Infrastructure Upgrade in Far Rockaway Beach Boulevard
The New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) has submitted an application to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) for a State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permit for the reconstruction of the Rockaway Beach Boulevard (DDC Project ID: SANDHW13) in Hammels section of Far Rockaway Beach, Queens. A Public Participation Plan has been developed in accordance with NYSDEC Commissioner Policy 29, Environmental Justice and Permitting (CP-29). The purpose of this meeting is to inform the public about the project and to involve the community during the SPDES permit application review process.
Date: Time: Location:
August 30, 2018 6:00pm – 8:00pm Queens Library at Peninsula 92-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard Rockaway Beach, NY 11693
Agenda: • Project Overview • Background • Scope of work • Project schedules
• Community Impacts • Proposed Mitigation Measures • Questions
Your Attendance is Important! Project personnel will be available to answer any questions from the community. For additional information on the proposed project: • Contact Community Construction Liaison, Erich DeSuza: Phone at (347) 771-5846, email sandh13ccl@gmail.com • Visit the repository at: Queens Library at Arverne located at 312 Beach 54th Street Far Rockaway, NY 11692 or the Peninsula Branch of Queens Library located at 92-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard Rockaway Beach, NY 11693 • Visit the project website: http://www1.nyc.gov/site/ddc/contracts/SANDHW13-public-participation-plan.page
YES, IT'S IMPORTANT! Don't question it. Now to the deeper stuff. What does it mean to you if your boyfriend says I love you? Beyond wanting and getting to hear those words, there are more layers to what "I love you" represents to you. To many women and men, it means, commitment, it means I accept you as you are without changing, it means maturity. You have been together for eight years and this is important to you, and you're not hearing it. My first question to you is: are you genuinely feeling loved by this man? The part I don't love about what you've shared is that he changes the subject and or gets serious when you lightheadedly play and ask him "do ya love me?" It sounds like this subject is "heavy and loaded" already. What I can suggest is to be aware of absolutes. It's important for you to take a version of your rose-colored glasses off and to really see this man, see him for his truth right now, not how you
Page 33 want him to be or project or imagine he will be in the future. I am not saying end it with him, I am saying is to notice: 1. Does he listen to you when you share a story? 2. Does he support you with day to day events? 3. Do you feel loved when you are not physically together? Keep it basic, so you don't end up settling and shriveling up in situations that don't fit you. Riis Swims Strong in National Lifeguard Championship By Katie McFadden Last weekend in Virginia Beach, lifeguards from across the country gathered to prove who are the top ocean guardians at the United States Livesaving Association’s National Lifeguard Championships, and once again, this year Riis Park’s lifeguards proved to be among some of the best in the country. A team that consisted of Pat Kilgallen, Drew Modrov, Tom
overall in the B Division, which accounts for lifeguard chapters with 100 lifeguards or less. On the first day of competition, Riis was on top of the leaderboard for the B Division, but by the end, Fort Lauderdale and Smith Point beat them out, leaving them in third place for the LACOLA Trophy. Riis also proved that it has some strong individuals among its ranks. In the Ironguard competition, in
O’Neill, John Cullen, Peter Ebert, Brendan Woods, Michael McAlpine, Daniel Collins, Brian O’Neill and Aidan Donohue made the trip down to Virginia Beach for the USLA Lifeguard Championships, held from August 8-11. They were among roughly 900 lifeguards from across the country that attended the event. Due to poor weather, some of the events, including the Board Rescue, Landline Rescue, Open RunSwim-Run and the Taplin Relay were not contested, which was unfortunate for Riis, as in past years, they have dominated in many of these events. However, Riis still had a strong showing and wound up taking third

In the Ironman competition, in which participants cover a 1,400-meter course that includes a swim leg, a board leg, a ski leg and a beach sprint finish, O’Neill took third place out of 16 competitors, and Pat Kilgallen came in fourth. Congratulations to all of the participants, and to Riis beachgoers, knowing that they are in good hands when they go swimming.

WHO’S WHO? By Katie Lucev
Tarragon Scallop Gratins By Sharon Feldman
My husband makes this dish and has decided to share with you. He got it from Epicurious with a few twists and turns on his end. It’s really delicious. We serve it with cherry tomatoes as a side.
Page 35 1 teaspoon chopped fresh tarragon or one teaspoon dried 1/3 cup fresh breadcrumbs (you could always use panko or Italian) Directions: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine shallots, olive oil, white wine or vermouth and tarragon in a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Mix to blend. Divide mixture between two gratin dishes (I suppose you can use ramekins instead). Sprinkle breadcrumbs over, dividing equally. Bake until scallops are just cooked through and opaque and crumbs on top are golden, approximately 20 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
Serves: 2 Ingredients: 8 ounces bay scallops, cut into small pieces Salt Pepper St. Camillus Band, 1955. Monsignor William Burke (far left). 2 tablespoons olive oil Rockaway Beach Blvd. and Beach 91st Street. 2 tablespoons white wine or Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, vermouth 1 large shallot, chopped Emil R. Lucev, Sr. (1933-2018).

Volleyball Champs Crowned Saturday may have been a bit rainy and overcast, but that didn’t keep the hundreds that participate in the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League (RBVL) from coming out for the final showdown. In fact, the conditions made for a perfect day or play that kept the regular beach crowds away and the sand cool, preventing any foot burns from high heat like in past years. By the end of Saturday, August 11, 10 champions were crowned. All put up a good fight, but the winners of this year's volleyball championship include Bungalow Bar, Pico, Kiss My Ace, Rock Fam, Kerry Hills, DJs@Work, Danger Zone, Simba’s Pride, Last Call and Harbor Light. Some will claim their championship sweatshirts, half of Rockaway will now have their Wednesday nights back, and volleyball could have a new home next year. After several issues with the National Park Service over the past few
summers, RBVL may be looking to relocate next summer. Stay tuned, and once again, congratulations to all of the winners and to the organizers that work hard to keep RBVL, a popular Rockaway tradition, going each summer.
