A Noble Deed By Katie McFadden

When 10-year-old Michael Krasowsky lost his beloved toy sword on the beach earlier this month, he was devastated. “He’s not a crybaby but he cried from his heart,” his mom, Nicole Melhado said. After all, it was something that rarely left his side for more than five years. “He got it for a good report card in kindergarten. It was just this random toy he picked out, but it was something he gravitated to. Michael has some ADHD and emotional issues, and this sword is a security blanket for him. It’s part of every Halloween costume. It’s gotten several makeovers by Rochelle for every Poseidon Parade. At school, they were doing a play of Aladdin and they made him a guard so he could use his sword. If you know Michael, you know this sword goes everywhere with him” Melhado said. So when they realized it was gone after coming home from a day at the beach, they searched high and low for it, tracing their steps, looking in garbage cans for the “well loved” toy and asking others if they had seen it, but to no avail. “He was just beside himself, just heartbroken,” Melhado said. Michael then had the idea of posting some photos online, so on August 7, Melhado shared the story with a few photos of the sword and asked if anyone had seen it. While unfortunately, no one came across the sword, the idea of a child heartbroken over the loss of this toy, struck a few chords. “We put it on Friends of Rockaway Beach, and it was shared nearly 70 times and people started messaging me, asking if they could send him something,” Melhado said. “Another woman commented on one of the photos and had found a link from Walmart for the sword, so I ordered it that day…but the swords never stopped coming.” After some asked for her address, several packages showed up at Melhado’s home with various swords, shields and other similar toys To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

for Michael. “It was like Christmas for him. A couple friends and family had sent things, but some were just from people I had never met before. When it comes to things like this, our community goes above and beyond,” Melhado said. “Rockaway never ceases to amaze me. When it comes to our children, we find a way to come together and make it right. These are complete strangers who did this. It put some pep in my step and restored faith in humanity.” On Wednesday, August 18, Melhado happily shared this update with those on the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook group along with a photo of Michael’s new collection. As for Michael? “Mikey truly appreciates it. He’s happy as a clam right now,” Melhado said. “The world is right again for Michael.”

Addabbo and Amato Team Up To Appeal To DEC On Walkway/ Ramps

(Printed here is a joint letter from State Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer-Amato to NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos) Dear Commissioner Seggos, We hope this letter finds you well. We are writing you today on behalf of our constituents of Belle Harbor, Neponsit, and others on the Rockaway Peninsula in their opposition to the Unites States Army Corp (sic) of Engineers’ (USACE) west end design for a concrete path and ramps planned for Beach 125th Street to Beach 149th Street. While the need for improved access to the beach for that area is agreed to, we believe it is imperative that the USACE and DEC acknowledge the concerns of the residents who lives in the area when it comes to any large, permanent structure that will be built in their community. In response to the proposed project, the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association conducted a survey where over 1,000 of its residents responded. More than 90% of those surveyed were against the concrete path on the beach and more than 60% preferred an alternative, such as a Mob-mat, rather than the ramps leading to the beach. The survey indicated that many homeowners in the area feel that this proposed walkway and ramp would bring

even more unwanted vehicles like electric scooters, mopeds, skateboards and more. We already have a well-documented safety issue with these vehicles on the boardwalk. The proposed concrete path would extend that problem and make every beach entrance in Belle Harbor and Neponsit a blind alley that could endanger children and the elderly as they walk onto the beach. They are also worried that this infrastructure will bring with it more danger during extreme storms, letter, a hideout haven and could burden the impacted communities with upkeep costs dues to deterioration. Additionally, the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association survey found most residents with disabilities, and those with family members with disabilities, are against the ADA-compliant ramps in the proposed projects and would prefer a different solution. Indeed, they have spoken clearly about how the path and the ramps will not work for them as designed. We share these concerns with the residents and disabled community regarding the proposed project and hope to be able to discuss the issues with DEC and USACE. Thank you for hearing our concerns and we look forward to a project that will be beneficial for everyone involved for generations to com. Joseph P Addabbo Stacey Pheffer-Amato

When Council Member Ulrich’s office started offering free COVID testing in his Rockaway office last year, his constituents responded positively. The site, open through May of this year saw more than 2,000 people visit to go through the quick and safe self-swab test. By early May though, the numbers of people wanting to get tested waned as vaccinations became available, and the testing site was moved elsewhere. Requests to the office to begin testing again in the last two weeks, coupled with the rise of cases in the area due to a new variant, have caused the staff to reconsider. The office at 114-12 Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Park will reopen for testing from 10:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M, on Tuesdays, August 24 and August 31. Rob Schwach, the Council Member’s Deputy Chief of Staff, who oversees the testing site,

said, “Some are kids going back to college that need to be tested first, others are parents of kids who are too young to be vaccinated. Others are just worried about the new variant. We’ll see how many people come over the next few weeks and then re-evaluate whether or not to extend and/or expand the testing schedule.” Testing at the office is conducted by members of the city’s Health and Hospitals Corporation Test and Trace Corps. Staff will help participants setup an online account to receive the results, and then provide them with a swab that people can use to collect their own sample from their nose. The swab is then placed in a special container that gets sent to a lab for testing. People usually get the results within two days by email. No appointments are necessary, questions can be directed to the office at (718) 318-6411.

Riis Gets A Trim After last week’s story about the sad state of Riis Park, crews got to work and did some serious weed whacking at the old handball and basketball courts at Bay 10. Now, if only we could get the National Park Service to address the crumbling infrastructure. But hey, maybe this is a start!

PS 105 Spreads Kindness & Beauty Principal Laurie Shapiro then hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony with all the children who participated and others from the neighborhood. This mural helps brings positivity and beauty to the neighborhood. Knowing that our neighborhood kids had a part makes me even more proud to have this beautiful mural. It represents how much more can be done when the community gets together to accomplish greatness.

By Theresa Racine

Spread a little Kindness is the theme for PS 105 in Edgemere. On Tuesday, August 10, The Bay School unveiled their mural representing just that. Marissa Molina, a program director for Thrive Collective, has been working throughout the borough bringing beautiful murals to our neighborhoods, including Rockaway. Molina says she’s painted about 11 murals in Rockaway so far over the last six years. Thrive Collective creates hope and opportunity through arts and mentoring through public schools. To learn more about the program you can find it on their website https://www.thrivecollective. org/. The recently unveiled mural at the school at 420 Beach 51st Street has been the talk of the town. It has brought energy and brightens up the area. People who walk by cannot help but take their cell phones out to take pictures of it. It has been uplifting for the commu-

nity and the kids who helped paint it. According to Molina, the kids shared that it feels good to be a part of the movement to bring beauty to the area. It makes them proud that they actually created the design “It started in the classroom for about two weeks, then went outside to bring the mural to fruition,” Molina said. They began the mural on July 6 and completed it on August 9. Students worked tirelessly in the hot sun from the hours of 9 a.m. to noon.

Well, how great was Katie McFadden’s story last week about George Johnson and his friendship with a Kentucky man, first begun when George was a bone marrow match with the young Forrest Nichols 25 years ago? They loved it in Kentucky, too. A chain of Kentucky newspapers will run the story around September 11. ***** From our star marine reporter: The Jamaica Bay subway bridge, a swing bridge just east of the Cross Bay Bridge, has been stuck in the closed position since early July. When closed, the bridge has a vertical clearance of about 26 feet at mean high water. The waterway is an important link for petroleum products going by barge to the tank farm on Burnside Avenue plus contaminated soil is removed by barge from a nearby site and replaced, again by barge, with clean soil. The tugboats that normally push these barges are too high and can’t fit under the bridge so older, lower tugs must be used. Plus, anyone with a sailboat east of the bridge, can’t get out to the main bay. It’s a real mess. There is a work barge with a crane moored at the bridge (blocking one side and creating a hazardous condition) but so far, they don’t seem to be making much progress. In case you were wondering, JFK is not affected because they get jet fuel from an underground pipeline that originates in Bayonne. ***** It’s not the weeds in the cracks at Riis that bothers as much as the cracks. It was a pleasant surprise to see NPS crews clearing some of the overgrown weeds on the old basketball and handball courts but it’s the actual infrastructure that needs to be addressed. If anything, clearing the weeds, shows even more disrepair and neglect. We contacted Congressman Meeks’ To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

The Rockaway Times and Senator Schumer’s office twelve days ago for comment. So far, they seem to be in cahoots with NPS: we’ve heard zilch. Please see page 6 if you’d like to contact Gateway directly (it’s contact info from their website). ***** Last week we announced a “mini photo contest” and asked you to send a photo of your garden or favorite flowers to Mail@RockawayTimes. com and Robin Shapiro of the Shore Garden Club will select a winner who will receive a $100 Gift Certificate to Lisena Gardening Center. Contest ends Aug 31. We’ve gotten some good ones already. ***** The Belle Harbor Yacht Club will host a 1st Responders “Thank You” Party at the club next week, Thursday, August 26, from 6-10 p.m. There will be free live music with Jim “Wolfie” McGrath, food from Breezy’s Bishop’s Barn, and tequila from the sponsor “Mana Tequila.” It’ll be outside on the Foggy Wharf Deck and club backyard. Contact the BYYC for more details. ***** NYC Parks, The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and the Rockaway Film Festival are collaborating to bring movies to the beach. They are offering an End of Summer Film Series at O’Donohue Park in Far Rockaway on the last three Saturdays of the official beach season including August 28, September 4, and September 11. Screenings will begin at sunset. For more information, please visit rockawayfilmfestival.com. ***** Queens Public Library announced that the Peninsula branch, 92-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard has reopened after a closure due to a Covid case.

Rockaway Film Festival Presents the Arverne Cinema By Katie McFadden

Rockaway has a cinema once again. On Thursday, August 19, the outdoor Arverne Cinema, presented by the folks behind the Rockaway Film Festival, will open its doors for its first official screening. Since launching in 2018, the Rockaway Film Festival, founded by Sam Fleischner and Courtney Muller, has transformed and grown in many ways. From their start in a warehouse on Beach 74th Street, to movie nights at the Rockaway Brewing Company to partnering with the Tribeca Film Festival, Fleischner and Muller have found creative ways to bring films to a place that hasn’t had a movie theater in more than 20 years. “We’ve been learning lessons, but it’s been really exciting. We’re approaching our fifth year and with each year, we expand and do so much more and so far we’ve been able to pull it off and it’s really exciting. Any opportunity we’ve had to show movies is exciting,” Muller said. Now they’re gearing up to open the Arverne Cinema, located at 72-02 Gouverneur Avenue in Arverne. While the pandemic made 2020’s Rockaway Film Fest a mostly virtual event, 2021 has been a big year for Fleischner and Muller. This spring, they started weekly Wednesday night movie nights at the Rockaway Brewing Company. Earlier this summer, they had the opportunity to be a part of the Tribeca Film Festival’s “Borough to Borough” effort and screened films at the Beach 30th Street Playground. They’ve also partnered with NYC Parks and the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy to bring an end of summer film series at O’Donohue Park on Beach 17th Street for three Saturdays starting August 28. And on Thursday, they’ll debut “Cryptozoo” at the brand new Arverne Cinema. In the spring, Fleischner says Ethan Long of the neighboring Rockaway Brewing Company asked him if he would be interested in transforming the lot

behind the old Family Funeral Service Inc funeral home, into an outdoor movie theater. Fleischner jumped at the opportunity, though at first, it seemed an insurmountable task. “There was just trash and weeds everywhere,” Fleischner said. “But if anyone could do it, Sam could,” Muller added. In June, they got to work, clearing out the lot and transforming it into a usable outdoor movie space for the community, in what was truly a community effort. “It was really a neighborhood project,” Fleischner said. When neighbors caught wind of what they were trying to do, everyone began to help out. One neighbor, John Norton, who is a builder and plumber, helped provide machinery to do some of the heavy lifting. “He does movie screenings on the beach in Breezy Point, so he was a champion of this idea and was so generous with his guys and time,” Fleischner said. “He then introduced me to Pat Concannon who hauls dumpsters. And then we just had people that would come by and ask if we had any work, so I’d put people to work. There is no way we would’ve been able to do this if it weren’t for so many people excited to participate.” What was created in that short time is a gravel-paved lot with a sandy area that seats more than 100 people in lawn chairs where they can watch

films projected on to a screen on the wall above them. Plus, with elongated picnic tables near the back, the space can fit up to 200 people. The new Arverne Cinema and Rockaway Film Festival signs on the front of the building were also made possible with help by local artists, Valentina Gallup and those from Locus Occult, respectively. On Thursday after the sun sets, Fleischner and Muller invite the community to come check out the space and enjoy their first feature “Cryptozoo.” This film, which first premiered at Sundance, was picked up by Magnolia Pictures and will open at Angelika New York on Friday, but first, Rockaway will get a premiere. “It’s psychedelic animation. I’ve never seen animation like it before” Muller said. “It’s intentionally inconsistent in the storytelling devices it uses but it works,” Fleischner added. However, this animation is not for kids. “It’s an adult animation,” Muller said, adding that folks should leave the kids at home on Thursday. The filmmaker, Dash Shaw, will be on hand to answer questions in a discussion moderated by Bill Kartalopoulos. Rockaway Film Festival technical director Jorge Morillo will be on hand to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. Seany Slices and his wife will be cooking up margherita pies to order. The screening is free. Tickets can be found at Rock-

awayfilmfestival.com, but as long as there is space, people are welcome to stop by. Fleischner and Muller are excited to see this latest piece of work at work on Thursday. “I like being here and it feels good seeing what we’ve done but to see it full of people— that’s what I’ve been dreaming of this whole time. I hope to see a full audience,” Fleischner said. For those who can’t make it Thursday, this is just the beginning for the Arverne Cinema. From September 13 through September 19, they will host the full Rockaway Film Festival, where they plan to use the new cinema as a screening location. But in the meantime, families can get a taste of the Rockaway Film Festival with their summer film series being held in partnership with NYC Parks and JBRPC. The series will take place for three Saturdays starting August 28 at O’Donohue Park on Beach 17th Street. “We’ve been really excited to present movies further east on the peninsula to engage people on that part of Rockaway,” Fleischner said. And they’ll have something for all. “With these films, we tried picking something for everyone. Rockaway is super diverse, and everyone has different tastes for different movies,” Muller said. The first feature will be the “Babe: Pig in the City,” a film made for the whole family. On September 4, they’ll be showing “Countryman,” paying homage to the West Indian Parade that was cancelled last year, and the world of Rasta Countrymen. To make it even more fun, they’ll be bringing in underground reggae DJs before the screening. On September 11, they’ll be showing a timely film “Man on Wire” about daredevil Philippe Petit’s tightrope walk between the World Trade Center towers in 1974. The films begin after sunset. For more information about these screenings and more, check out RockawayFilmFestival.com and make sure to follow RockawayFilmFest on Instagram.

Decades of Darkness Dear Editor: Thank you for shining a light on just how far Riis Park — and all of Gateway — has fallen. It’s an ongoing, never-ending disgrace. I remember the 1970s when Riis Park was a City park. The ball fields were heavily used by Rockaway Little League, St. Francis de Sales, Rockaway Rugby and the local softball league. On summer weekends, the parking lot would be jammed with visitors from Brooklyn. Since the City was going bankrupt, we were assured

that the creation of Gateway National Recreation Area would be a great thing. The benefits were short-lived. By the late 1980s, the Feds had stopped maintaining Gateway. The fields became dangerous. Most were eventually razed. In the decades since, –even during economic boom times– our elected officials were unable or unwilling to get Gateway the funding that befits a National Park that has 8,000,000 people in its backyard. Local management seemed uninterested in pursuing innovative programs that would enhance recreation. Yes, there are some very nice small programs for kayaking, camping and nature hikes but in our urban setting, recreation should mean so much more. Even without creative programs, there is no excuse for allowing the infrastructure to crumble. One has to wonder if Congressman Meeks and Senator Schumer have any idea that Riis Park has become a national eyesore on their watch. Paul King

Wine With Sue Brings the Heat to Healy’s

By Nicole Taylor-Lang

This August has brought the heat and this past Friday so did Wine With Sue. On Friday the 13th, local band Wine with Sue rocked away at the newly revamped Healy’s Pub (10807 Rockaway Beach Dr). The well-known local band started out 27 years ago and has been playing music for Rockaway ever since. Wine With Sue is known for playing all different covers of different genres from old school to modern punk rock. Friday was a hot one and what better way to cool down than have a delicious Healy’s frozen and listen to some live music. As one local patron who goes by George Rockaway put it, “Healy’s is the place to be, it is THE bar in Rockaway, there is no other bar that can touch it.” I can’t deny that because I always have a great time at Healy’s. The show started around 5 p.m. and the band was ready to jam. Wine With Sue consists of John Burke on vocals, drummer Don Sautner, guitarist Mike Schmitt and bass player John Fabry, and together, they know how to bring the party wherever they take the stage. When I arrived, I grabbed my favorite frozen drink, an orange creamsicle—a large one, with a floater! Now, there has been a debate in Rockaway about who has the best frozens and personally, I have to give that to

Healy’s. After I got my drink, it was time wind down and cool down. After a long work, what’s better than that? Several others chose to kick off their weekend the same way. As the band played, everyone seemed to be enjoying the music. The bar started to get packed. Healy’s has such a “Cheers” atmosphere where everyone knows each other and “everyone knows your name.” That’s what great about Rockaway, the friendly faces and neighborhood. “Healy’s is not one of my favorite bars, but it is my absolute favorite bar,” local Roberta Scheriff said. “I’m enjoying my night very much so and I love Wine With Sue, they play all the music Rockaway loves.” I would have to agree with Scheriff on that one because they played some of my favorite songs too like “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers and “She’s So high” by Tal Bachman. Their music caters to all different age groups , so it’s no wonder they have such a popular following. As more people trickled in, the middle of the bar became a dance floor. The band is happy to be back playing in all the different bars and restaurants in Rockaway. “We are semi-retired but now we are playing more than ever,” lead singer John Burke said. “But the pandemic was hard for us and now we are happy to play while we

can.” Healy’s always has live music and DJs playing so make sure to check out their Instagram @healyspub for upcoming music. Also, if you are a fan of Wine With Sue or want to check them out, they will be

playing at Rogers on Saturday, August 28 at 9 p.m. and don’t miss their Labor Day weekend blowout on Friday September 3 at the Beach 97th Concession. You can also see more of their events on their Instagram @ wine_with_sue or on Facebook.

The Foodie Report: Jamesons Pub By Scott Ruscillo

We now have some new delicious eats in a very familiar place. Jamesons Pub on 129th Street in Belle Harbor is mixing it up by starting a Friday Steak night featuring Curran’s bone in ribeye with all the trimmings. We all know Jamesons as a comfortable, inviting place to relax and enjoy a great drink. They have always supported our community and now I am excited to say they are getting creative with the start of steak night on Fridays. I am also hearing that they will be slowly upgrading their menu with some new delicious items as well. Chef Matthew Goebel is behind these new creative dishes at Jamesons. I’ve known Matt for a few years now and he has impressed me on many occasions with his cooking skills. Goebel has been dishing up amazing eats around Rockaway for some time now. He is a talented and imaginative chef who has been privately catering around Rockaway, as well as working in a few local restaurant kitchens over the years. My friends and I were invited

ferent types of cocktail sauces were perfect. I especially enjoyed the Aioli cocktail sauce because it was unique compared to the norm. My favorite part of the meal had to be the salad which consisted of super fresh sweet crab meat. Dousing lemon on top of the salad made it perfect. I hope one day the salad will become a regular on the menu because I was really impressed with its flavor and freshness. The main salad ingredients were fresh lump crab meat, brioche garlic croutons and the same delicious Aioli that was used for the shrimp cocktail. The steak, potatoes and asparagus were terrific and didn’t last very long on the table. The bone-in ribeye was cooked to perfection and sliced so it was easy to share. The meat was tender and juicy, you can tell this was quality meat simply prepared with no unnecessary ingredients added. The steak for two is 24oz and the steak for one is 16oz. The raspberry bread pudding dessert was probably the best I’ve ever had. It was perfection

and I would only hope this also becomes a regular item on the menu at some point. Let’s not forget Jamesons took good care of us with Blanton’s bourbon which was on the table when I arrived. Now I have a local place where I can go enjoy one of my favorite bourbons anytime. Jamesons is a successful, longtime Rockaway staple and I really hope they keep the Friday night steak night going. I am excited to say I have heard they plan to slowly implement new delicious dishes to the regular menu as time goes on. I am thrilled to see what creative new dishes are going to be popping up over time. I really want to thank Jamesons for inviting me and my friends over to review and enjoy such an awesome meal. Keep a look out on social media and stop by Jamesons anytime to enjoy some of their new and classic menu items. Jamesons is located at 421 Beach 129th Street in Belle Harbor. Living in Ease “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” – James Baldwin We talk about listening to the inner voice and making changes to make ourselves feel better in body, mind and spirit. Facing our current state of affairs, our current state of health, our current mental state and our current emotional landscape – often coming up with ideas to make things better. And to the point of Baldwin’s quote above, unless we face what is going on,

Page 31

THURSDAY, August 19, 2021

we can never change it. Stopping saying it’s ok or sweeping things under the rug or letting things roll off of us like someone’s unkind words or behavior, rather than facing the uncomfortableness and making some changes. It’s a matter of checking in with ourselves every day and asking some questions. Does anything make me feel uncomfortable? Do I feel peaceful? Is something bothering me? And then going from there to change what we can. Happy, healthy living.

But what about when we face things that cannot change at all, like the loss of someone, chronic or terminal illness, or having to be the caretaker for someone. Sometimes it is what it is. The only things we can change about these situations is how we think and feel about them. We may not be able to control what happened or is happening, but we can control how we react, how we think and how we feel. And this is the power of the human spirit. One thing I know is that it is a process and takes time. We have to create some open space in our minds and hearts and give in to the process of time. For me, this is the way to better my mental state and feel peaceful and loving in my heart. With time I have understood and felt the power behind the notion “santosha” – contentment. It is not the feeling of utter happiness as in kicking up one’s heels. Rather it is an acceptance and relief that this is where we are at this mo-

ment in time, it is what it is. By relieving ourselves of the anxiousness that could be around something uncomfortable or wrong, creates the space to just be. It’s almost like holding your breath and what that feels like and then breathing out and relaxing down. And with that space comes the opportunity to think and feel freely changing the negative way we may be thinking or feeling. I often would take people out of “savasana” (final relaxation) when guiding yoga classes with the following breathing intention; I’d like to share it with you. Take a deep breath in for your body that it be healthy and whole, take a deep breath in for your mind that it be clear and serve you well, take a deep breath in for your heart that it be loving and compassionate. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

The Gardener Wars

By Lou Pastina

Growing up in Greenpoint, we didn’t have many gardeners. In fact, I don’t think there were any, as most of Greenpoint had been cemented for decades. There are trees in Greenpoint, thus the name, but not many front lawns. Moving to Rockaway opened a whole new world to me, grass was in the front and back of our home. We did have the other type of grass in Greenpoint, but that’s a different story. With lawns, one needed to cut the grass and plant flowers and make sure trees and bushes stayed trimmed. I had none of these skills, as my life in Brooklyn ill-prepared me for life in Queens. Not that some Brooklynites haven’t tried to bring some of the old-country ways to Rockaway by cementing their front and backyards, but that

was not for me. I couldn’t believe that you could have green surrounding you. Why anyone would cement everything was beyond me. I am a proud member of the Arbor Day Foundation. Every time they send me a tree, I plant it, much to the dismay of the mermaid. In the old days (a few years ago) life was relatively simple in terms of servicing lawns in Rockaway. There were one or two service providers who came to Rockaway either during the week or early Saturday morning and cut the grass and weeded and seeded, and they usually covered the entire block in one day. So, you would see the truck and know that eventually they would make their way to you, and you might hear that loud humming of electric or gas lawnmowers or trimmers, but you only had to hear it maybe once every five weeks or so. But recently, due to any number of reasons, there is now available an army of different lawn service providers. I guess they saw

an opportunity to compete on price, service, or quality and they came in by what seems like the dozens. No longer is the process done by one provider taking care of an entire block in one day; each provider has their own schedule, which means you are more likely to hear the lawnmowers going seven days a week, because every homeowner has chosen someone different. Now I am not that much of a complainer about these things, but it does seem like there is an overabundance of noise pollution as the gardener wars have erupted. Not sure where all these gardeners have come from, but they are definitely working hard. I guess it’s a good thing to have price competition, but I long for days when the only thing I could hear was the crashing of waves in the far-off distance and cries of seagulls above my head divebombing their droppings on my targeted head. Oh, the good ol’ days. No, instead, what we have is

lawnmowers going seven days a week. I also don’t understand the economics of lawn service providers. Many of them have these huge trucks and loads of other expensive equipment. They come by about every five weeks in the summer, and then in the fall and spring to get things ready for the coming seasons. But they bill you maybe once or twice a year. How does the cashflow work in that business? Are they that flush with cash that they can pay all their guys all season long until they get paid? Or maybe they don’t pay their guys, and maybe the guys bolted to other providers? Fees have definitely gone up over the years so maybe it’s a profitable business. And some of the new guys, they show up in a station wagon (they still exist!) and just pull a lawnmower out of the back. Maybe I’ll buy a lawnmower; I’m retired, this could be my second act! But I will bill weekly, cash only. Hmm, now that’s an idea!

Sweet Italian Sausage and Peppers By Sharon Feldman

LAWN SIGNS

AVAILABLE FOR EVERY EVENT FROM YARD SALES TO GRADUATIONS Visit: RockawayGraphics.com

Serves: 8 Ingredients: • 8 sweet Italian sweet sausage (or hot Italian sausages – your choice) • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1-1/2 large onions, halved and sliced • 1 green pepper, seeded and sliced • 1 red pepper, seeded and sliced • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • salt and pepper to taste • ¼ cup red wine • ¼ cup broth (I used beef) • 1-15 ounce can of petite diced tomatoes • 2 tablespoons tomato paste

Directions: Head the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the sausages and cook, turning frequently, until browned all over. This takes about 10 minutes. Remove the sausages from the pan. Add the onions and stir, lifting the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the tomato paste and stir. Then add the peppers, garlic, salt, oregano. Cook until the onions and peppers soften. Add the wine, and petite diced tomatoes. Mix to incorporate. Return the sausages back to the pan. Cook on low for another 45 minutes. * I used red and orange peppers

On August 14, 1945, I was 8 years old, sitting on my stoop on Willis Ave and 137 Street in the South Bronx. Out of nowhere, I see my mother walking down the block. She should have been working at Alexander’s Department store. Little did I know that almost all stores were closing, except for our favorites on Willis Ave. My father ran up four flights of stairs to get his «growler» and was «rushing the can.» The growler was a large can used to fill with beer. He ran across the street to Hickey›s bar.( The same Hickey’s bar that moved to Rockaway) Mr. Hick-

ey was giving away FREE BEER. The greengrocer next door was giving away FREE WATERMELON to the kids. People were making streamers of toilet paper and flying the from the fire escapes. The boys were getting the metal covers off the “ash” cans and banging them together as cymbals. (The ashes were the remnants of coal which heated the coal stoves in our flats.) Times Square had its celebration, but so did Willis Ave. It was a grand, joyous occasion! THE WAR WAS OVER! -Rose Gurry

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Hematuria Hematuria is the presence of blood in a person’s urine. It can be visible, meaning the urine is red, called gross or macroscopic hematuria, or it can be nonvisible, or microscopic. Macroscopic hematuria can be striking and has been documented since ancient times, especially when it appears without a prior event such as trauma, painful urination (dysuria) due to a bladder infection, or flank pain from a kidney stone. Microscopic hematuria may go undetected for years and is only found when a urine analysis is done for other reasons or during a routine exam. The American Urologic

Page 41

THURSDAY, August 19, 2021

Society notes a prevalence of microhematuria between 2.1 to 31.4% of the population. When evaluating hematuria, a consideration of both the patient and the geographic area is warranted. For example, in northern Africa, where the parasite Schistosoma haematobium is endemic, hematuria may be a manifestation of bladder infestation. The causes of hematuria differ between women and men and so the evaluation, accordingly, should reflect that difference. Bladder and kidney cancer can cause both macro and microscopic hematuria, but the incidence of these cancers differ

between the sexes. Men have more than double the incidence of these cancers, but often the evaluation of hematuria is delayed in women (because it can be wrongly attributed to a gynecologic source), so women often have a worse outcome, especially for bladder cancer. Detection of hematuria starts with a dipstick evaluation of the urine. When the stick is dipped in urine, hemoglobin or myoglobin (a muscle protein) will cause a chemical reaction with the compound on the stick, turning the stick blue. False positive results can be caused by consuming beets, rhubarb, azo dye (often used in medications to relieve dysuria), and sulfonamides (sulfa antibiotics). A false positive may also result following a vigorous workout that causes muscle soreness. The muscles release myoglobin into the blood following heavy exercise. False negative results can be caused by high levels of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the urine. When the dipstick shows positive for blood in the urine, examination of the urine under a

microscope is imperative. Microscopic examination looks for not just red blood cells, but whether or not those cells are intact or damaged or fragmented, and also white blood cells (suggestive of infection), crystals (suggestive of kidney stones), and casts, which are clumps of cells or protein that would suggest kidney disease. Before running any tests, a thorough patient history and examination must be performed, including smoking history (bladder and kidney cancers are strongly linked to smoking). Initial testing includes a full blood test which evaluates kidney function. Follow up after initial exam may include urine cytology (looks for malignant cells), CT scans, cystoscopy, and referral to a specialist. Because microscopic hematuria may go unnoticed for years, it is important for everyone to have an annual exam that includes, among other things, a urine analysis. FROM THE SHORE GARDEN CLUB

Growing Bananas By Rowena Schwab

Yes! We do have Bananas! The Shore Garden Club met on Monday, July 16, at the home of Elaine Shein, a wonderful master gardener and longtime treasured member of the club. Our guest speaker Dave Hovanec, a banana plant aficionado, gave a fascinating talk and slide show about growing banana plants. To everyone’s surprise, Dave has created a tropical paradise in his backyard on Beach 133rd Street despite all odds of banana plants surviving our cold winters. Like most of us, Dave searched for a replacement garden after Hurricane Sandy, struggling for normality. Dave experimented and researched ‘til he found a banana plant which could thrive in Rockaway, cultivated it successfully and generously shared it’s “babies” with others who now also live in tropical splendor. In his presentation, Dave explained the different varieties of plants, how to grow them and how to care for the plants during the winter. The Shore Garden club thanks Dave for visiting our club and we hope that other gardeners will be inspired to create their own tropical paradise.

The members then toured Elein’s amazing garden and enjoyed a delightful lunch. If you enjoy gardening, flower arranging and civic beautification, please come to one of our meetings and find out what we are about. Please contact our club president Kathy Holahan at 718-945-0038.

Wrestle Talk

In The News not happy with the new plan the WWE has for the brand pushing forward and have had meetings with the WWE to voice their opinions. I personally agree with the USA Network, and I don’t agree with what the changes the WWE has recently done with the brand. The Question of the Week comes from Timmy T. in Rockaway Park, and he asked “What are your thoughts about Bill Goldberg? Hey Timmy, well I do have to say I was never a Goldberg fan since he debuted in World Championship Wrestling. His storyline was this indestructible human being that no one could stop, and I never really jumped on board with it. Now he has returned to the WWE and to be totally honest, I’m not thrilled about

By Eric Jayden

So, for the last several weeks, we have been talking about the expected debuts of former WWE Superstars at All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and reports are running rampant that CM Punk will be making his AEW debut on August 20 in Chicago, Illinois. This will no doubt be an epic moment for wrestling fans, and it will definitely help the buy rate of the PPV Rampage. This will be an event every CM Punk fan will not want to miss! In other news, it appears that not only NXT Fans are upset about the latest releases of talent but also the USA Network has also been reportedly not happy about the releases and that NXT will go back to a pretaped show. It seems executives at the USA Network were also

that either. There is plenty of younger talent right now that deserve the chance to be in the spotlight and not Bill Goldberg. Last week, Saturday August 14, I had the pleasure of performing live for the wrestling fans of Broad Channel and Rockaway as ECPW Presented Live Pro Wrestling at the Broad Channel Athletic Club. It was a memorable night and I got to meet many of WrestleTalk readers including the James boys of Rockaway Park. Looking forward to seeing more fans as ECPW plans to return to Rockaway Beach this fall.
