Far Rockaway’s Calvin Stanley Provides a Guide to Success By Katie McFadden
What does success mean to you? To Far Rockaway resident Calvin Stanley, success is “finding true happiness. And after successfully publishing his first book, Stanley is on his way to achieving his own personal success story while inspiring others. At 26 years old, Stanley works as a personal fitness trainer, a construction company employee, the owner of a new moving company, and now is a published author. On May 8, Stanley released his first book, an inspirational quick-read called “Auspicious: The Journey Behind Pursuing Your Dreams. In his book, Stanley tells the story of overcoming struggles, pursuing dreams and achieving success, whatever that may mean for an individual. To do this, he not only shares his own story, but those of his peers, as they find their own path to success. As Stanley points out, “No path to success is the same.
A graduate of Channel View High School, Stanley opens his book with a synopsis and quote from a fellow Channel View student, the late Justin Zemser. “My success isn’t defined by how much money I make, or by going to Harvard or Yale, but rather by how I can change the world. If it just so happens

that I make a large amount of money doing that, then so be it, Zemser said. Stanley says Zemser, a Naval Academy Midshipman who died in an Amtrak accident in 2015, told him this during a conversation back in high school. “He opened my mind up. I didn’t understand what he meant by that quote when he first said it, but it played perfectly into the message I wanted to get across in my book, Stanley said. In his book, Stanley goes on to demonstrate the various ways of achieving success through stories of his friends, including Far Rockaway natives. As a young black man growing up in an urban environment, Stanley speaks of how he’s watched his peers grow up in difficult circumstances and come out of them, successfully, or on a pathway to success. He begins with his own story, growing up playing various sports and going on to play college football. A car accident and further injury derailed plans of pursuing football further, but instead of letting it set him back, he went on to become a certified personal trainer. He also speaks of a friend, Jahleek, who grew up in an area surrounded by poverty, gun violence and drug abuse, but successfully graduated college, and is now working, married and has two children. Stanley says he wishes his friend would write his own memoir. While his friend wasn’t up for the idea, it inspired Stanley to tell his story and that of others who have followed different pathways to success. “Success is not a linear process. What success might look like to you, might not be success to me, but we can be successful in our own ways, Stanley said. In his book, he points to many other examples. One such is the story of another friend, Foley Futukasi, who successfully worked his way up through his dedication to football, and is now a player for the New York Jets. He speaks of a woman named Brittany who overcame tragedy and went on to launch a successful THC and CBD treat
business, particularly filling the needs of those who need medical marijuana treatments. Through the various stories and mentions of music that have influenced his life, Stanley aims to show that anyone can achieve success. “Success is in us all. We all have something special inside of us, whether it is a talent, skill, work ethic, etc. We just have to tap into it and discover the thing that makes us unique, Stanley says in the book. He adds that the main tools required are “discipline, dedication and desire. With his book, Stanley hopes to reach and inspire youth. To help achieve that, he will be giving about 30 copies away for free to kids at the Far Rockaway Greek Council’s Back to School event on Saturday, August 22. The event starts at 2 p.m. at 1425 Central Ave. There will also be books for sale, which he will personally sign. For those who can’t make it, you can find Stanley’s book on Amazon, or reach out to him directly by email at c.stanley44@yahoo. com

BOYLEING POINTS
No one likes getting ink more than my siblings so I’m running a column from last year. I was out on a boat with four Captain Queegs last week, though only one knew how to sail. He was the alpha Queeg, although the others were his equal or worse when it came to screaming paranoia, outsized delusion, and general insanity. Of course, I’m talking about my brothers. One of those brothers will be pleased, no matter what, because he appears in this week’s column. He says it’s the only reason to read Boyleing Points – if he’s in it or can take claim for that week’s topic. He’s often mistaken. I once wrote about George Clooney and Brad Pitt without mentioning their names and this brother bought me dinner. He mailed the column to co-workers. Yes, I broke Rule Number One
and left Rockaway on a hot, summer day. But this was an emergency meeting called to talk about last week’s column regarding genes, Alzheimer’s, and dying — topics my barrel-of-laugh brothers can’t get enough of. We decided to meet on a boat because none of us can swim. And we like the potential for doom. The bonus being, we wouldn’t live long enough to get Alzheimer’s if the boat flipped. Of course, we’re competitive so we argued about who could doggie paddle the longest before sinking. The DNA results had been clear: Kevin, (and brothers) you are unlikely to have a unibrow but you can’t swim. Your ancestors swam like Irish potatoes stuffed with lead. None of us were surprised by these results. We wondered if our ancestors were like us. They’d rather drown than ask for help, rather drown than die of embarrassment. If you’re like me, you probably don’t remember that I wrote about 23andMe and how their

DNA testing reveals all sorts of health traits. You can find out if you’re susceptible to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, for example. I decided not to look at the results. What could you do if you found Alzheimer’s was a possibility? The youngest brother on the three-hour tour said, “I wouldn’t have to look, I already have it.” Catskills dialogue followed. “How could you say that?” “Say what?” “That you have Alzheimers.” “When did I say that?” In between criticizing my column and drinking beer, we talked about death. Sometimes the subjects were combined. “I almost died waiting for one of your sentences to end. How many subordinate clauses can one man take?” How’s that for wild inappropriateness? You’re out in New York Harbor, sailing delightfully across the water, drinking a cold one and this guy’s taking shots about subordinate clauses. Jeez. Another beer, please. Before a grammar fight breaks out. I’m still bristling.
WEEKLY SPECIALS
The guy’s a freaking dangling participle. My oldest brother said we should all die in chronological order and the other three quickly agreed. The second oldest said we would revisit the idea after the oldest kicks. The sail boat brother insisted he wanted a Viking funeral. He said if he goes first, he expects us to shoot flaming arrows at his death raft as it floats away. His only regret would be not witnessing how bad things will go. How we’d probably set everything on fire except his Viking raft. And so it went as we sailed back to the marina, all of us chuckling. Smiling about the day. As we tied the boat, I thought about those DNA results. The testing said I’d likely prefer salty to sweet and that I share DNA with thousands of 23andMe customers. But the testing didn’t state the obvious thing: That I’m lucky. Lucky to share genes with brothers, brothers who I’m lucky to consider best friends.

Not So Slick
Quick action was taken to mitigate an oil spill in Jamaica Bay last weekend. On Sunday, August 16, a fuel odor filled the air and an oil slick was spotted in the bay
near West 14th Road in Broad Channel. The oil came from a home that was under constr uction on Crossbay Boulevard. The owner of the home had emptied an oil tank into the ground, which then ran into the bay. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation was notified, which sent a response team to survey the scene. An environmental firm was hired to place a boom and conduct the cleanup. The owner of the home will be responsible for the costs of the cleanup.

***** Happy Birthday, Toots! Vincentia D'Amato Becker, better known as Toots, celebrated her 100th birthday on the beach, Tuesday, with family and friends. And a very Happy 90th Birthday to Gloria McDonald who celebrated with neighbors on Beach 134th Street. ***** The Tenant Safe Harbor Act — which gives tenants protection from eviction if they haven’t been able to pay rent because of the coronavirus pandemic – has been extended through October 1. This protection does not apply to the roughly 14,000 people who were issued eviction warrants prior to the pandemic. ***** Former Queens Borough
President Claire Shulman died Sunday. She held the position after Donald Manes resigned amidst a big corruption scandal in the mid-1980s. She was followed by Helen Marshall who was followed by Melinda Katz who was followed by Sharon Lee. Donovan Richards, now the democratic candidate for the office, is likely to be the first man to hold the job in 35 years. ***** Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the Restore Mother Nature Bond Act will be postponed until 2021 due to New York’s financial instability. If passed by voters, it would have provided funding for flood-mitigation work, efforts to restore fish and wildlife habitats. ***** Speaking of Cuomo, he’s going to have a book published regarding Covid-19 and his management of the crisis. Hmm, we thought the crisis was ongoing. Seems like an odd time to declare victory. We wonder if this will be a lit-
eral rewrite of history. Is he going to quote himself: “This is an enemy that we have underestimated from Day 1. And we have paid the price dearly.” ***** Hoop stuff: The St. Francis Summer Classic (technically it might be called “Classics” but we’re going with the singular) is in playoff mode and even with restrictions, it’s been great. If you go to check the action, remember, spectators are asked to wear masks. The 3 on 3 By The Sea – Claire Droesch tournament is Friday, August 28. If you’re looking to play, you must register by August 26. See Page 22 for details. And Rockaway Hoops, the interview show hosted by Ryan Woerner and Coach Charlie Marquadt airs on Facebook every Sunday, usually around 8 p.m. The show has a big following just a few weeks after launching. Check it out. ***** We wanted to say “best wishes” to gyms and yoga

He says September 2. What’s more tiring than a hard gym workout? The ongoing clashes between the mayor and governor. ***** The digital news platform, The City, reports that New York City’s First Lady, Chirlaine McCray, has a staff of 14 people “as de Blasio is talking about laying off up to 22,000 workers amid a pandemic-induced budget crisis.” McCray is “thinking about” running for Brooklyn Borough President. ***** Last reminder. Potential Plan for Arverne East Unveiled
The ball is starting to roll on the long-awaited Arverne East Project. In a recent virtual meeting, more details were unveiled regarding this development project for an underutilized oceanside area between Beach 32nd Street and Beach 56th Street. On Thursday, August 13, NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development and developers L&M
artners Inc., Triangle Equities and Bluestone Organization held a virtual meeting to speak more on the possible future of Arverne East. This project will transform more than 115 acres of vacant land into a 35-acre nature preserve, a 15-acre dune preserve and mixed-use development including housing. The plan calls for 1,650 units of housing with 320 market rate units
and 1,320 units of affordable housing for a mix of income brackets. There would be one designated parking space per unit. It would also include a private street network. The space would also allow for the possibility of an urban farm and a 262,000-square foot commercial corridor space with the possibility of including a brewery and boutique hotel.
As this project requires some zoning changes, this development will be going through the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP), so it will go before the community board for public review. The developers hope to get started on some aspects of the project by next summer. For more info about the project, head to ArverneEast.com

Broad Channel Rises Up Broad Channel has gotten a lift. A place known to face frequent flooding, some Broad Channel residents can now have some relief after the completion of a vital street raising project. On Tuesday, August 18, elected officials joined in Broad Channel for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the first phase of this $46 million project. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, Senator Joe Addabbo and Councilman Eric Ulrich joined Dan Mundy Jr.
and Sr., reps from the NYC Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Design
and Construction to celebrate the completion the first phase. Phase 1 included West 11th to West 13th Streets. The project included raising the
streets three feet and installing water mains, sewers and catch basins to reduce flooding in the area. Phase 2 of the project will include West 14th to West 17th Streets. “Great day in Broad Channel to celebrate the completion of the first phase of Street Raising! As the impact of climate change on coastal communities worsens, investments in resilient infrastructure are crucial. Thank you to DOT, DDC, DEP and the Mundy family for all your hard work, Pheffer Amato said.

Toots Turns 100! By Katie McFadden
What happened on August 18, 1920? The culmination of the work of strong women— the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote—was ratified. And another strong woman came into the world— Vincentia D’Amato Becker. On Tuesday, August 18, a banner hung above her home, recognizing both tremendous 100-year-old milestones. Beneath the banner, that woman, better known as “Toots,” raised a glass of champagne with her friends, neighbors and many, many family members who all gathered to sing Happy Birthday to her on the momentous occasion. But being a Rockaway girl, as Toots turned 100, she spent most of the day celebrating at one of her favorite places—the beach—surrounded by the people who keep her going—her family. “I’m 100 years old! I didn’t think I’d last this long,” Toots said on the beach on Tuesday. Even being able to make it to the beach for her annual birthday celebration was a big accomplishment. But her family, who she says has carried her through to the ripe old age of 100, stepped up yet again. “I didn’t think I’d make the beach, but my grandchildren got me down here. They’re wonderful,” she said. Using a specialized beach wheelchair, Toots’ grandkids got her down, not just to the beach, but all the way to the ocean, so she could take a celebratory toe dip on her big day. Asked about how the water felt, Toots giddily responded, “delicious. I love it!” Toots has been dipping her toes in the water since she was nine years old. Originally a Brooklyn girl, Toots would spend summers in Rockaway, and in 1965, she made it her permanent home after her late husband, Thomas, found the perfect piece of land and had their dream home built for them. While Thomas is now gone, that house is still home and has served as the roots of a family tree that keeps growing. From five kids, to 14 grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and
three great-great-grandchildren, the youngest being six-month old Jackson, the Becker family just keeps expanding. And on Tuesday, most returned to that Rockaway home to celebrate the grand matriarch of it all. Despite coronavirus restrictions, it did not stop most of her family from coming out to celebrate, with some even making the trip back to Rockaway from as far as Seattle and North Carolina. They wouldn’t miss it for the world. It’s not every day that your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother or great-great-grandmother turns 100. The family-vibe was strong on Beach 124th and for Toots, family is everything.” As long as we’re together, that’s all that matters,” Toot said. “Family, family, family, that’s what keeps her alive,” youngest daughter, Linda Ruggiero said. “It’s a dream come true to celebrate her 100th birthday because tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone. To have her here is such a blessing. To be a

great-great-grandmother, I don’t know any family that’s blessed to have that, so I’m very proud.” PJ Larkin, one of the 14 grandchildren, who made the trip from Seattle said, “I wouldn’t miss this. For my kids, her great-grandchildren, to have her, is incredible. Some people will say, ‘oh, we can’t believe she made it to 100.' But everybody here knew she was going to make it. She’s the matriarch of this family, but it is her spirit that gets all of these people together in one spot. It’s all about family for her. She’s always taken care of us. As an Italian grandmother you couldn’t come in without being handed a plate of food and her asking if it was enough,” PJ Larkin said. On Tuesday, Toots skipped the cooking as her family had pizza delivered right to the beach, but the family love kept her heart full. “As long as the family’s around, I don’t think she’s going anywhere,” PJ Larkin said. Another grandson, Rich Ruggiero, agreed. “It’s not surprising
that she’s 100. You’d just think she’s like a 30-year-old woman, just one year older, and I know she’ll be here next year. She’s not going anywhere,” he said. Ruggiero made the trip all the way from North Carolina to be there for Toots. “You gotta fight through to be there for your grandmother’s 100th birthday,” he said. That fighting spirit is something Toots has passed on to her many family members. “I feel blessed every day to still have her,” granddaughter Sue Settanni said. “We got through Hurricane Sandy together in that house and she survived that and the fact that she’s still with us, I can’t feel more blessed. She’s a fighter. She’s taught us the core values in life. She’s given me more of an education about life than my two master’s degrees. And she’s still got it, and that’s the beauty of it.” Barbara Larkin, who spends time caring for her mother along with her sisters, sees that fighting spirit daily. “She rarely complains. I don’t think she has one negative bone in her body. She’s always asking how the children, the grandchildren, the great-grandchildren are. I feel like I’m the luckiest person in the world because not only is she my mother, she is the most caring, wonderful, kind, understanding person and it’s a pleasure to be with her. Who at age 72, can say they’ve had their mother, their best friend alongside them during this journey through life? She’s just an incredible human being and she love, love, loves Rockaway. To see her today, putting her feet in the water, it was amazing.” After leaving the beach and heading back to the house, that Rockaway love was returned as neighbors joined from all around to raise a glass to Toots and wish her a happy birthday, while staying socially distanced. Everyone enjoyed a cannoli-cream-filled birthday cake decorated with seashells and a black and white photo of a young Toots showing off her bathing suit. Guests went home with a goodie bag complete with Tootsie rolls, of course. “It’s a perfect day,” Toots said.

Adding To The Record Dear Editor: Almost in each issue of The Rockaway Times we have letter or article about "the lawlessness on the boardwalk with its "dangerous mix" of people riding bikes and being careless. I would like to contribute to this chronicle. Have you ever seen a group of teens riding their bike on rear wheels in the middle of the boardwalk? I have seen this many times. Two weeks ago, such a group was passing by, and one teen lost his balance and almost hit me. It was a few inches between us. At the last minute, he regained his balance and I was "saved."
One week ago, I headed to the exit from the boardwalk at Beach 67th Street. Suddenly I had to scream "an idiotI" One lady-sprinter almost hit me. I do not know who is an idiot: me or her. I made a too sharp turn, or she was speeding. Or maybe we both were idiots. I am 75 years old and my bones are really fragile. Maybe I should not to go to the boardwalk at all? L. Klavtsen Not Just DFDs Dear Editor: This has been a real beach summer. Warm, sunny days perfect for sand and surf. However, this beach-going observer has seen some very poor behavior demonstrated by some of our fellow Rockaway residents. The rules of social distancing apply even on the sand. But, repeatedly, I’ve watched as large groups plop themselves on top of others, usually singles or couples, with no respect for the six feet rule. In all cases, people were bullied into moving in order to make
/DZ 2ɆFHV 2I
The Rockaway Times
room for the groups. With the entire beach at their disposal, these people feel the need to occupy someone else’s little space, causing both an annoyance and a very unhealthy situation. I realize that we live in a very uncivil society right now, but the lack of caring, understanding, ethics, and morals is more than disturbing. And these are not DFDs. These folks are our neighbors and friends. The virus is not a Democratic hoax, and the good people of Rocka-
way should do what they can to prevent it from spreading. Instead, many seem to not give a damn, either for themselves or for anyone else. With the summer on the wane, I appeal to everyone to act civilly and intelligently. Social distancing will go a long way to keeping you healthy and alive. And while you’re at it, you will be showing some respect for your neighbors on the beach. Burton J. Glass, MD

A Socially Distance Musical Meditation Music can bring people together, even while apart. On Saturday, August 22, the AEON Ensemble will be leading a socially distant music performance and musical meditation. Rockaway resident Joanna Mieleszko has helped organize this event event that will take place by Kris Perry's new sculpture on Beach 98th Street and Shore Front Parkway. The first, taking place at 2 p.m., will include a musical program that explores four centuries of gorgeous nature-oriented masterpieces for three voices and cello (think Bach’s Cello Suites to Thomas Morley’s Motets). The second will be at 7 p.m. with a musical a musical meditation session, featuring a meditative soundbath, Each session is one hour long and social distancing will be encouraged throughout. The AEON Ensemble is a
contemporary classical music collective that creatives immersive, often multi-media concert experiences. Their goal is to make excellent quality new music that is engaging and accessible to everyone in location, price, and content. The AEON Ensemble is pairing up with a few environmentally-oriented businesses and projects including Rockaway-based Hydrophonics NYC for this event. They also have a few partnerships brewing for future endeavors with organizations like Surfrider Foundation. The event is entirely free to attend. However, donations will be accepted to split between the ensemble and one or 2twoRockaway-based community organizations such as Community Boathouse, RYTF, JBRPC, etc.

Blood Center Asks Donors to Make Appointments New York Blood Center (NYBC) is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by two-thirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. NYBC began hosting a limit-
ed number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more donors. Blood from volunteer donors is needed every two seconds to help meet the daily transfusion needs of cancer and surgery patients, accident and burn victims, newborns and mothers delivering babies, AIDS and sickle cell anemia patients, and many more. To make an appointment to donate blood, and for information on the extra precautions being taken to help prevent the person-to-person spread of COVID-19, visit donate.nybc. org

Claire Shulman, Former Queens BP, 1926-2020 Former Queens Borough President Claire Shulman died Sunday, August 16, 2020 at the age of 94. She was the first woman to hold the office and served as Borough President from 1986 to 2002, following Donald Manes who resigned the office after a series of scandals. After being elected in 1989, 1993 and 1997, she was prohibited from running again because of term limits. Prior to entering politics, Shulman had also been a member of the local community board in Bayside. Acting Queens Borough President Sharon Lee said in a statement, “Claire Shulman was larger-than-life. She did not waste time and lived every single minute fully and with purpose. In a borough known for its trailblazers, few have led a life of dedicated public service as robust and as effective as Claire Shulman. You just couldn't say no to Claire Shulman. She trans-
formed the landscape of the City's largest borough, and so much of what we see and enjoy today are the results of her extraordinary vision and decisions made over 18 years ago. No one loved Queens more than Claire Shulman, and in turn, she was widely respected and deeply
loved.” Donovan Richards, expected to win the Borough President race in the upcoming November elections, said “When I made the decision to run for borough president, I reached out to Claire for advice, mentorship and support. Our first meeting lasted nearly 5 hours at her kitchen table, where she proceeded to give me a history lesson on Queens. In her 90’s she was a walking encyclopedia. “In this rough and tumble business of politics, she managed to bring people together, even through disagreement. Because she understood that leadership was about improving the lives of everyday New Yorkers, but especially Queens residents.” Former Queens Borough President and now District Attorney, Melinda Katz said, “I am extremely saddened to hear
about the passing of Claire Shulman. I had the pleasure of working for Claire when she was the Queens Borough President – the first woman to hold the post. She was a trailblazer. A fierce leader who dedicated her life to bettering the lives of all Queens residents and paved the way for women leaders in the borough. “I was honored to follow in her footsteps as Queens Borough President and owe her a great debt of gratitude for her amazing leadership and profound dedication to public service. Claire was absolutely pivotal to the vibrancy and prosperity of Queens County that we continue to enjoy today. “My deepest condolences to her family and loved ones as we mourn her passing and celebrate a remarkable life dedicated to bettering the lives of all Queens residents. May she forever rest in peace.”

By Beth Hanning What War? “The War in the Schools” is the headline I woke up to this morning on ABC’s Good Morning America. I did not even continue to watch. I stopped watching the news months ago. But I cannot believe that opening the schools has become a political battle. I truly thought when I left school in March, I would be returning to school after spring break. I thought we were closing to flatten the curve. I never imagined we were closing until we found a vaccine. People keep saying that teachers are freaking out about returning to work. I do not
know one teacher who is freaking out about returning to work. Many of my teacher friends are eager to return to the school buildings to try to gain a sense of normalcy. According to the Gothamist online news website, on August 4, 2020 “hundreds” of parents and teachers protested regarding their children returning to school. “Hundreds.” Now according to the New York City Department of Education, there are 75,000 teachers and over one million students. So I do not think “hundreds” of people protesting warrants that all teachers
are freaking out about returning to their buildings. I have spoken to many teachers about returning to work and many who have concerns have concerns that have been around way before Covid. Many people are unaware that many New York City High School classrooms have 34 students. Also, many school buildings house more than one school and hallways are crowded. That is going to be difficult to social distance. Another concern is cleanliness in school buildings. Many schools in New York City are actually in terrible condition both physically and cleaning-wise. I know I proctored the Regents exams one year in a school I will not mention and the windows only opened about an inch. I am not a Covid expert but I have heard about ventilation being an issue. The room was also filthy. (When I was a Catholic School teacher, I had to go to a NYC high school to take my last teacher certification exam. When I entered the room, the proctor
Page 23 gave me a cleaning wipe. When I sat down I cleaned the filthy desk. The young lady next to me said, “Ma’am that wipe is for cleaning your finger after they fingerprint you.”) So, for years, our schools have been ignored and teachers and staff have done their best to keep rooms clean using their own supplies. Teachers receive an allotment of money each year and many teachers I know, including myself, use some of that money on cleaning supplies. This year, due to budget cuts, teachers will not be receiving that money. However, if we are going to battle the political game, I can play too: I will go back to work with a smile on my face and pep in my step if on Friday after work I can go eat dinner inside one of my local restaurants. How can my governor and mayor say I cannot enjoy a meal inside a restaurant but I can return to school? Have a good week everyone, enjoy the rest of the summer. Silver lining: 8/31 is a Monday so an extra week of summer!

Whatcha’ say? By Lou Pastina
Alrighty, alrighty, don’t get your knickers in a knot! Ever hear that saying? No one uses the term “knickers” anymore, but in the “olden” days, it referred to your shorts, underwear that is. And the saying meant don’t get all excited and uptight…you know, like bunched up underwear, very uncomfortable. My grand old father-in-law, Big Bill Stogey, used to say, “ok kids, go play in traffic.” Now before you get all politically correct on me, he was usually talking to the adults when he said that, not kids, and it was an old way of saying “why don’t you take a long walk off a short pier.” I kind of like both sayings, they truly get to the point quickly. Although when
I use them these days, I am usually met with a blank stare, as if to say, what the hell are you talking about? Another of Big Bill’s sayings was, “don’t get hit by a car, wait for the bus.” His way of saying, don’t do the job halfway, if you know what I mean! I miss the man with the shock of white hair and a broad smile on his face. Today, if you walked by a fire hydrant and called it a “johnny pump,” youngsters would wonder what planet you were from. You could tell them that you remembered playing “johnny on a pony,” but they would wonder who this guy Johnny was and why does he have a pump and a pony! Of course, if you were sitting on your stoop while dreaming of these things, you might be from Queens, but more likely from Brooklyn. And anyone who wanted to know what a Brooklyn Dodger was, would have to know that it was someone trying their
best to get out of the way of the trolleys that ran all over Brooklyn back in the day. I’m told my Uncle Joe was a trolley driver, until one day his trolley jumped the track and ran down the wrong end of Bedford Avenue. His trolley-driving days were short-lived. Big Bill was also fond of giving directions. Typically, they included a long, convoluted description of a road rarely taken, followed by the family heirloom “don’t take that road.” And actually, looking back at that particular saying, it was very good life advice. Because if we knew ahead of time which roads not to take, we would all be better off. But as it was, Bill never could tell you which road you should take. And again, looking back, perhaps that was his strategy, to let the intrepid traveler find their own path. Ahh, the Irish, they are all poets and philosophers. The saying “what’ye hear,
what’ye say” comes from old James Cagney movie, but it captures the essence of old New York, when guys hung out on street corners. Yes, the world is certainly different today. This pandemic, the tropical storm, political correctness, protests, my, my, you’d think it was the ‘60s again. Old timers will tell you that they have seen it all, kid. The more things change, the more they stay the same. We have had bad politicians before; we’ve had good ones too. Athletes missed whole seasons due to wars, “been there, done that.” But I have to say, living in Rockaway has been a blessing during these times. Fresh air, the ocean, open skies, a small semblance of normalcy before the fall comes. And the fall is coming, although I wouldn’t count my chickens before they are hatched. I have to admit, there really is no reason to get our knickers in any knots!

Where There’s Smoke, There’s Death
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Recently, one of the medical journals that I read published a book review. The book is The Cigarette: A Political History by Sarah Milov. The book was published last year. According to the review, the book contains some startling revelations and is a must-read. For starters, cigarettes remain the leading preventable cause of death, a morbid fact that is easily lost in our current COVID-19 frenzy. Even if this virus kills 200,000 Americans, that death rate pales in comparison to the half a million Americans killed every year by cigarettes. The genius of the nicotine industry in getting people to use their products is mind-boggling. For example, in 1999, Philip Morris launched a campaign urging young women to “Find your voice” by smoking Virginia Slims cigarettes that was part of a larger effort to
turn smoking into a form of speech. Opponents of smoking were therefore trying to stifle free speech. In the decades after World War II, the cigarette industry was able to addict state governments, mostly in the American South, to the cash flow that was generated by cigarette sales. In 2003, the president of R.J. Reynolds commented on the dynamic by admitting that “the largest financial stakeholder in the industry is our state governments.” The author explores the political muscle of the industry by utilizing unparalleled historical treasure – 85 million pages of online archives maintained by the University of California San Francisco, including documents and detailed plans to market to young people euphemized as rookies, novices, or replacement smokers. There are thousands of pages outlining plans for ethnic marketing, nicotine manipulation, and schemes on how to refute any kind of science that might
implicate cigarettes in causing harm. A Philip Morris engineer named Ronald Tamol kept notebooks on the company’s need to determine “the minimum amount of nicotine required to keep normal smokers hooked.” Most of the documents were revealed before ever passing through the redacting hands of lawyers. Sadly, American smokers today smoke about 230 billion cigarettes annually, more than three times the number smoked in 1940. And this is despite the overwhelming, irrefutable evidence that cigarette use shortens a user’s lifespan and causes a myriad of diseases. Cigarette makers still prosper financially. Credit Suisse in 2015 pointed out that cigarettes have been the leading financial investment in American history. Altria, the parent company of Philip Morris USA, still has a market cap of $76 billion, and Philip Morris International is worth $112 billion. Milov writes that smoking has become a
“shameful private vice” – but people can still smoke freely in most public places, unlike public urination (although our current mayor does not enforce it). Smoking remains common in many Hollywood films and TV shows. It is clear that the cigarette industry has won the “war” against those who oppose it. Scholars need to pay more attention to cigarettes, even during the current plague. Any focus on disease that ignores the cigarette, or the cigarette industry, is like pretending an interest in malaria while ignoring mosquitoes and swamps. Nicotine addiction will outlive this virus, shackling millions in chains that lead to suffering and death. The havoc wreaked on human health is worse than any virus, and Milov is right to insist that the catastrophe is not just preventable, but it is also political. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Creative Forces By Kathy Pastina
Rumi the medieval poet wrote, “What you seek is seeking you. I think of this as I sit each morning. What is it I would like to embody today? What is my intention as I walk through my day? How can I be a vessel of blessing for someone else who may be struggling? Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed with the ever-increasing demands of our jobs, family and life. We are living through an unprecedented time of great suffering with the pandemic and all the uncertainty. Every day a new piece of news comes across our phones, computers and TVs in
alerts in real time. Most of us seem to live in a state of constant fear and anxiety. A contracted state of being that shuts down our heart and minds. It is completely understandable. We are living through a cultural, social, economic and political revolution where we are being asked to unlearn old patterns and relearn new ones. Finding some calm, clarity and courage to face these challenging times can start with what seems to be so simple and elementary, our intention. Every emotion we feel starts with a thought. The unconscious universal mind is Life, Love, Wisdom, Health and an Abundance.
We can bring forth these positive attributes in our life through reflection, prayer and intention. In the morning, tune in to yourself first before the hum of the news stream and all our responsibilities pull us away from our real true selves. Try to empty yourself first of the habitual negative thoughts, the unworthiness, shame, regret and guilt, if even for a moment, so you can fill up with light and love in order to summon the creative forces that give birth to calm, clarity, courage, compassion. This is my morning intention, but it can be anything that you want to draw near to you‌ love, peace, healing, joy, acceptance. A sense of gratefulness for all the good in our lives which can bring a sense of expansiveness and connection to spirit. It has been said that prayer is when we talk with God, or the universe, however you see that lovelight, and meditation is when we hear the answer back in that quiet stillness. Start in a comfortable seated position, feet on ground and lengthen through your back and begin to follow the breath to quiet the mind body. Try breathing
The Rockaway Times through the nose. This one-pointed focus will quiet the ever-chatty mind and bring you to this present moment. We live most of our lives in the past with regret or the future with anxiety we miss out on the very life right in front of us! Every time the mind goes back into that default mode of negativity, do not push it away. Even our dark emotions can lead us toward the light. Put your hand on your heart and with self compassion, gently walk it back to focus on the breath then bring an intention into your mind’s eye and repeat. This faithful quiet presence will help cultivate a sense of inner peace, wonder, curiosity and resilience when we suffer and face adversity. Plant the seeds of love, goodness, and compassion and those seeds will grow and reveal themselves in our life. As you send out that vibration of love the universe answers in kind. What you sow, you shall reap. It’s a universal law. What you seek is seeking you! The universe conspires on your behalf! Namaste! The light in me recognizes the light in you.

By Shane Kulman
Mother’s Nature Dear Enchantress, I feel like my mother does not ever understand me. I am 38 and she will send me text messages, like "don't stay up too late." She thinks I'm still a child, and it's really annoying. I don't want to get mad at her, but I do, and we fight a lot. She lives upstairs, I have my own apartment, and I pay rent and all, and she just pops into my house whenever she wants, she brings down food, and asks if I need my laundry done. I don't have a washing machine and she does upstairs, so sometimes I just let her so she won't ask anymore, and it is a pain in the
butt. Help! She wants to play Mommy with me and I want to play adult, living on my own, leave me alone style. How do I deal with her without yelling and treating her like a slave? Dear Daughter doo-doo, I hear you. Mother-daughter relationships are the most challenging of all. Most times, mothers have daughters that do the exact things that push their buttons and daughters get annoyed at the things mothers love doing most. I actually have research on this. When I was parent coaching, I took a large survey, and 80% of mother-daughter relationships are not smooth and lovely friend-

ships. So, you are not alone, and I understand the tough nature of this situation because you live in such close proximity. Some of this advice might be annoying. Number 1) do not let her do your laundry. Even if you have to spend extra money to send it out or spend the time in the laundromat. As annoying as it is, if your mom does your laundry and you are not doing anything as helpful back, then she is being your mommy. I am not saying it has to be transactional or tit for tat, but if you are looking for autonomy and independence from your mom, then you must imagine you live somewhere far away, and take care of yourself. Lock your doors, and let her know with lightness and ease (something like) "Ma, I want to play like I'm an adult, I'd like to lock the door, and we call each other to see if we can come over, ok?" Two things: Keep it light and stick to what you are requesting. This is all boundary work, and again, family, and especially mothers are the hardest to shift and change things
Page 29 with. As Claire Huxtable said, many years ago, "I brought you into this world, and I'll take ya out." And it's a practice, which means, you will mess up. When you go visiting, bring flowers or cake or whatever you would bring to a guest, and don't expect her to change overnight, but do celebrate small things that she changes, with appreciation and gratitude to her. Anything is actually possible, if you focus on what does work about her and your relating to her, and do not focus on what you don't like, then you are golden! Travels With Bob and Sandy IS THE “VIRUS” COMING ALONG? By Bob & Sandy Nesoff
After a half year of “House Arrest” it looks as though travel is perking its head up once again. And there is no shortage of people willing to take a chance and go on the move. But is it safe? That depends. If you are flying, are you willing to climb aboard an incubator with wings? While some airlines are requiring that all passengers and crew wear masks when boarding, the procedure becomes rather lax once the aircraft has taxied and then lifted off the runway. There have been several instances of passengers doffing the masks once airborne with the attitude: “Are they going to kick me off the flight at 32,000 feet? The answer to that is “yes” in a number of cases. Several flights have turned around and returned to the airport and have had passengers removed. This causes a great inconvenience for passengers following the rules, great expense for the airline, and time as a guest of the government for the mask doffer. Jet Blue has always had a reputation for being passenger friendly and on more than one occasion has gone the extra mile to ensure a person with, say a broken leg, has been comfortably seated. Now Jet Blue has taken a major step forward for passenger safety. While most airlines are spray disinfecting aircraft at least once a day, or some after each flight, Jet Blue is employing a radical new technique…ultraviolet disinfectant. The airline has invested in a machine with arms that reach out over seats on both sides of the aisle and up to the overhead baggage compartment. The ultraviolet kills the virus and can go through an entire airplane in under 10 minutes. They don’t mitigate the fact that wearing masks is still an essential part of keeping safe. You’ve got to do your part as well. Bring along a supply of masks and surgical gloves as well. No one will laugh at you. Going on a driving vacation? Check in with your local dollar stores and pick up a package of toilet seat covers and surgical gloves. You really don’t want to sit or touch, under normal circum-
stances, on a seat where someone whose hygiene is less than sanitary has just vacated. Plan your route as much as possible so that you’ll know where to stop, eat and use the facilities. Check out your hotel and ask what their disinfectant policies are. If they can’t/don’t tell you, stop somewhere else. One thing you should truly consider is trip insurance. The way things are going, we don’t know if there’ll be a second wave, a third wave or whatever until this is under control. We booked a fournight cruise out of Miami on an NCL ship with stops in Cozumel and Key West for late April. We had originally booked it for late March but caught family flack because of a granddaughter’s wedding in April. We were able to rebook without a penalty. Always check rebooking policies. But just to cover ourselves, we purchased Trip Cancellation insurance. We don’t normally do that, but with the current situation in mind, it was worth the extra few dollars not to lose the cost of the cruise. Cruise lines may cancel a trip and that becomes their responsibility. Otherwise it’s yours. Make sure what the policy is. Will they refund your money or simply give you a credit for a future cruise? The choice should be yours and not theirs. Be aware, however, when booking through an agent, the agency may have a policy of collecting a fee, no matter what the reason for the cancelled trip. Some agencies have been the target of complaints because they charge an excessive percentage. So, look before you buy. And so we repeat: Is it safe to travel? Yes, unless things become radically worse. But the caveat here is due diligence. It’s your responsibility and yours alone to make sure you are protected. Does the hotel properly clean rooms? Does the airline make sure you are safe? Is the cruise line doing a thorough job of cleaning and disinfecting all cabins and public spaces? This is a great time to travel inexpensively. Cruise lines and airlines are hurting financially and many are offering spectacular savings. Same for hotels and resorts. Enjoy!

The Naturalist’s Corner DIGGING IN TO SAND CRABS crab, is a well known animal to many locals. In the scientific community we refer to organisms by their scientific name; in this case our little buddies are called Emerita talpoida. Its hard exoskeleton and jointed legs signal its status as an Arthropod, and its ten legs classify the sand crab as a decapod, just like a crab
By Jennifer Porcheddu
“Mom! Mom!! Look what I found!” he squealed, and ran with his little shovel to show off his discovery. The mother gently picked up the small, pinkish-grey, egg-shaped crustacean, and placed it in his palm. “See how its ten little legs tickle your hand? It's trying to burrow underground. Let’s bring it back to the wet sand so it can feel safe.” One of my favorite sights at the beach is a young person digging at the shoreline and unearthing a creature, or selecting and admiring a seashell. This early exploration and observation of the natural world is a gateway to scientific literacy and is frequently correlated with greater academic success. Further, time spent outdoors, physically in contact with the natural environment,
reduces anxiety and depression for humans of all ages. I was thrilled to be invited to write this column, because I’ve spent a great deal of my life researching and teaching about the marine environment, and I would love to share what I know and also expand my knowledge by learning from you! Summer Classic Playoff Round-up
The Men's Open regular season ended with Village Saloon handing defending champs Kennedy's Restaurant their first loss and tonight's championship at 8 p.m. will be a rematch of that game. Last Thursday's quarterfinals were excellent. Kennedy's held off a late run by Harbor Light, The Cabana upset Trends By Meg, Village Saloon upended Jameson's, and ASAP C Merch knocked out Caiazzo Plumbing & Heating. Tuesday's semifinals saw
Village Saloon prevail in a physical battle with The Cabana, and Kennedy's execute their precision offense to beat ASAP C. Wednesday night was championship night for Boys High School, Girls High School and Women's Open. Jameson's faced Boardwalk Pizza for the Women's title. Boarders Surf Shop took on Chelsea Irish for the Boys High School crown, and NYBS Mechanical lined up against Nicole Frontera Beauty for Girls High School. Two weeks remain with only the grammar school divisions in action now. Regular season play concludes this week with playoffs scheduled for the first week of September in this season to remember.

or lobster. They are easy to find by digging at the shoreline but are sometimes hard to catch as they bury themselves so swiftly! And crabs... participate in an ongoing mass migration throughout the day to remain precisely in the swash zone: the area where the waves wash onto the shore. You’ve surely caught a particularly large one at some point (some grow as large as two inches!) This was likely a female; the males rarely exceed one inch. You may also notice yellow or orange on their undersides… look closely—those are eggs! Sand crabs reproduce in an interesting way. The young, small males (< 0.25 in) will gather around a larger female and attach a small packet of sperm to her fourth set of legs, which she will later use to fertilize her eggs. Sand crabs have a unique feeding method. They bury their body so that they face the ocean, with only their little eye stalks and bristly antennae sticking above the surface. As the wave rolls in, the sand crab catches the plankton suspended in the water in his antennae, and then uses his antennae to push the microscopic food into his mouth! You may notice our beautiful Rockaway water isn’t nearly as clear as you find in the Caribbean. That’s because our cool, oxygen-rich water encourages the growth of plankton, luckily for the sand crabs!
Okay, they’re cute, and they’re locals, but why else should you care about the sand crabs? Well, shorebirds do enjoy eating them, but more importantly, they are indicator species. This means they are sensitive to environmental changes, and if there are changes in their population, behaviors, or morphology, it will indicate that something has changed in the environment. For example, sand crabs’ reproduction and life spans have been altered as microplastic deposits increase in our sand. We can’t see or feel these micropollutants, but the sand crabs sure can! So next time you’re enjoying your day at the beach, look a little closer at these guys. Can you observe if she's carrying eggs? Could you bring a magnifying glass, lay on the shoreline as a wave rolls in, and try to spot their tiny antennae and eye stalks just above the surface (as you get a bathing suit full of sand!)? Could you catch ten sand crabs, measure them with a ruler, record the date, and see if there is a changing pattern in the sizes of sand crabs throughout the summer? I’d love to see your observations and questions! Which local organisms would you like me to feature next? WrestleTalk QUESTIONS III AND BCW IS BACK! By Eric Jayden
This week we get into some more questions! The first question of the week comes from Anna C. in Belle Harbor and she asked, "Do pro wrestlers make their own wrestling attire?" Good question Anna. Most wrestlers do design their own ring gear and some hire designers to make their ring gear. Ring gear can cost anywhere from $50 to $250 with some ring gear costing close to $1,000 to make. It all depends on the wrestler’s character and story they want to tell. Also how much money they want to spend. The second question of the week comes from Daniel B. in Rockaway Park. He asked, "How often do pro wrestlers work? What does their work schedule look like?" Excellent question Daniel. You have Independent Wrestlers who mainly work shows on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays with some traveling cross-country or
overseas. For pro wrestlers who are signed to contracts with major league companies, their schedules can vary with weekday TV tapings and doing shows on the weekends. Pro wrestling can be a seven-day-aweek job at times, and it requires a lot of traveling and a lot of time away from home. The third question of the week comes from James H. in Rockaway Beach and he said, "I used to be a wrestling fan, I love the combat and action but now wrestling seems more boring and theatrical." Another great point. Wrestling throughout the years has gone through many different changes. We have gone from the Character Era to the Attitude Era to what you see today, which I call the Theatrical Era. We are seeing more Hollywood influences in the product. We are seeing comedy
and movie action. We are seeing a lot of things that come out of Hollywood. I do feel that wrestling needs to return back to its original roots of having a stage fight between two individuals. The fourth and final question of the week comes from Harry S. in Arverne and he asked, "Can professional wrestling benefit from having a union represent them the same way they represent professional sports players?" Harry, this is a question that has been asked many times and here is my opinion on the subject. Professional wrestlers can benefit from having union representation. Having a union negotiate contracts that include salary, work schedule and benefits would greatly help the individual wrestler. Right now, the power is more with the organization and
not the performer and I believe with union representation, this balance could be equaled out to benefit both. We have great news to announce. BRII Combination Wrestling "BCW" will return back on September 5, 2020 with their 4th Anniversary Show called "Night of the Champions" live from the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This will be an all-day event. Tickets are $100, which includes access to the wrestling show, live band performance, comedy show, AEW PPV Viewing Party with ECW Legend Tommy Dreamer and a Special Attraction Deathmatch. You also receive a special discounted room rate of $139 at the Showboat. For more information, call 347-446-5142. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy. Have a great week!
