PHOTO CONTEST FINALS SATURDAY It started with almost a thousand entries. And now it’s down to eleven. We’re talking about the 2019 Rockaway Times Photo Contest, of course. John Cori will once again host the Finals, which will be this Saturday, August 24, at Caracas on the boardwalk at Beach 106th Street, starting at 10 a.m. After going through all the pictures, seven judges were able to settle on a Top 30. From these, a Top 10 was selected just a couple of weeks ago. Picking a Top 10 was so hard we settled on 11 (there was a tie). So, eleven photos remain as contenders for the grand prize of $500 and a front-page cover on The Rockaway Times. Those eleven will be on display on Saturday morning at Caracas, as will the other great photos that adorned the boardwalk railing, the ferry dock, and the Broad Channel Park for almost two months

this summer. Photographers can claim their photos on Saturday once the Finals ceremony is completed. The finals are open to the public and all are welcome. Caracas and Brothers have hosted the past few years and have been wonderful. Refreshments (juice, coffee, muffins, bagels) will be available, so come for the fun! The artists who are in contention are: Argirios Kostaras, Bob Anthony, Connor Rodriguez Don Riepe (2), Emily McNeil, Jessica Woods, Ken Ternlund, Tom Farley, Gabrielle Breen and Uladzimir Taukachou. The Rockaway Times is proud of this event and couldn’t do it without the help of the NYC Parks Department, The Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy, NYC Ferry, John Cori and our devoted readers and great photographers.

On Sunday, August 18, Toots rang in her 99th birthday surrounded by her family who came down to Beach 124th Street for a birthday bash on the beach! There was a lot to celebrate this year as Toots broke her femur earlier this year and was undergoing rehab for four months, but she was back and ready to party on Sunday! Best wishes, Toots! Updates from the Deep PARTY AND POSEIDON PARADE PLANS FORMING By Bert Sanders

Since I’ve been tasked with covering updates for Poseidon's Parade, I found it imperative to attend this year’s Tiki Party. Not only has Beach 119th Street taken home coveted trophies in previous Poseidon’s Parades, I knew I was sure to find members of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade celebrating the greatest party of the summer. What was intended to be a purely professional evening, degenerated into a night of debauchery, confusion, inebriation and pure Rockaway magic. I tried to discuss the upcoming costume exchange, which takes place today—Thursday, August 22 at Caracas from 5 to 9 p.m., but the music was too captivating. As Rob from “Ye Mighty Wave” roared into one of his patented, energy filled, poetic prophecies, I decided not to discuss the upcoming

event. I’d catch up to parade organizers during the set break. The opportunity presented itself on the front porch, where husband and wife to be, and this year’s king and queen of the parade, Bryan and Katie Pasta, filled me in on the details. I asked Bryan, a pirate and dragon boat deckhand, about the event. Katie rapidly answered, “It’s an opportunity for people to get their old costumes out of the closet and exchange both costumes and ideas. It takes place at Caracas, a huge supporter of the parade, and a legendary beach hangout. Even if you’ve never marched or made a mermaid costume, you should come by and check it out.” As she supplied important details, I became distracted by the sound of Indaculture starting up their set. I rudely walked away. Some say Katie’s still supplying pertinent details on

the front deck of Rockaway’s favorite hangout. One thing’s for sure, she will be leading the parade with Bryan on September 21. The mermaids went bonkers when the band ripped into “El Capitan,” an ode to the dragon boat, and brigade dictator Geoff Rawling. I asked Johnny Sica what he thought about the upcoming parade, and if he had plans for his group. He responded, “Parade?” as he watched the band, brandishing a Cheshire cat smile. It was not an easy night to get information. As “Real Young and Lazy Horse” tested the structural integrity of the Tiki Bar deck, I watched in disbelief as members of the brigade started a boisterous, ‘90s punk style mosh pit on the crowded deck. Beers flew through the air, and people got knocked around like pinballs in a malfunctioning pinball mashing. I put down my

pad and decided to join in on the madness. As they cranked into “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World,” I realized why the parade is such a success. This town knows how to work hard, party hard, and rock the $%^& out! It was truly a night to remember, if I only could... As I tried to manage my massive hangover, I called up Geoff. He told us that the Whalemenia float is up and ready for the parade. He hopes to get live music on top of it and start the parade with a splash. Members of the Brigade are calling on all blocks and restaurants and bars to join the parade. The more participants, the more the parade can grow. Rockaway needs to tap into its creative and competitive roots, and make this a parade for the ages. It’s the only proper sendoff for such an amazing summer. State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato will be bringing a free mammogram screening to the Rockaways. On Friday, September 27, the American Italian Cancer Foundation will have their Mobile Care Clinic inside the Key Food parking lot located at 88-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard — directly across the street from Addabbo’s Rockaway office — from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. where they will provide free mammogram screenings for eligible women. In order to be eligible for a free exam or screening, women must be: 40 years or older with health insurance; 50 years or older without health insurance; currently living in New York City; and had not had a mammogram in the last 12 months.

On Wednesday, August 21, the National Park Service (NPS) put out an alert on Gateway National Recreation Area’s social media accounts that Riis Parks’ beaches were closed to swimmers. “The beach is open, but visitors will not be able to swim in the water. This is due to elevated bacteria in the water,” the message read. Beachgoers who approached the Riis Park parking lot to start their beach day were also given the warning, forcing some to change their plans for the day. However, while the federal beach was closed to swimmers, NYC’s beaches, including Rockaway Beach, which is adjacent to Riis Park at Beach 149th Street, remained open. The Rockaway Times reached out to NPS for more information. “This was based on water testing. The level of enterococcus bacteria is above acceptable levels," a spokeswoman said. According

to research, “enterococci bacteria are normally found within the intestinal tract of human and animals, and indicate fecal pollution from stormwater, pets and human sewage. High concentrations of the bacteria, if ingested while swimming, or entering the skin through an open cut, can cause human disease, infections or rashes.” The Rockaway Times notified the NYC Department of Health of NPS’ update, which hadn’t heard of the federal agency’s alert. This promoted DOH to coordinate with NPS to investigate. According to early investigations, the issue seemed to be isolated to one area of Riis Park and had not spread to the rest of Rockaway’s beaches. Both NPS and DOH said they were conducting further testing within their respective agencies to see if further beach closures would be required. As we go to press, it is not clear if Riis Park’s waters would be closed on Thursday, August 22.

Last week’s Men’s finals which was played in the gym was a

thriller. The place was absolutely packed and the game was tight throughout. Local standout, Charlie Marquardt, scored from everywhere and every which way, ending with 44 points. But that was not quite enough as a squad from Breezy prevailed in the final seconds. The effort and intensity exhibited by both teams were wholly appreciated by the crowd. Although a lot was at stake, some lighthearted moments occurred when a young man assigned to wipe up sweat spots on the floor drew several standing ovations. At one point, about twenty-five fans chanted, “MVP! MVP!” for his efforts. Great game, great atmosphere. Bugsy, always have the finals in the gym! ***** Speaking of hoops, don’t forget the Clare Droesch Memorial, 3 on 3 By The Sea, is Saturday, September 7 at St. Francis. Clare was an outstanding player on the high school and collegiate level who died at the tragically young age of 36 after a long battle with cancer. Her legacy

The ribbon-cutting on the $14 million ecological restoration was Tuesday. NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver was there to commemorate the event. The underdogs finally came on top. On Monday, August 12, the NYC lifeguards met at the Riis Park baseball field for their annual softball championship. WWS Celebrates Endless 25th Anniversary By Kami-Leigh Agard

For Rockaway’s undisputed #1 rock party band, Wine with Sue (WWS), this has been an endless summer. The weather has been great, and they’ve been playing various local venues nonstop. However, for these four regular Joes, who all hail from Rockaway, what’s even sweeter, is that this summer momentously marks their 25th anniversary playing together. The Rockaway Times got the opportunity to chat with WWS’ vocalist, John Burke, and drummer, Don Sautner, about their epic journey as a band of brothers just loving playing the music their fans near and far clamor for—everything Rock and Roll. RT: So how did you guys begin together as a band? Sautner: We technically started the band in 1993 when we started rehearsing, but our first gig was in 1994 at The Blackwater Inn. I met my wife because she managed John’s band. None of us got

So I said, “We know some guys who could play some songs and we could do this too.” At the time, we were all in different bands, but we were all friends, so we decided to get together and play some shows, earn some money as a little side project. So we would always ask him, “Where were you?” and he always replied, “I was having wine with Sue.” Sue was his girlfriend at the time. So as a joke, one night, I said let’s call the band, “Wine with Sue,” and figured we would change it when we thought of something else. Admittedly that night, we may or may not have had a few drinks in us. After a while, the name just kind of stuck, and we decided to stick with it. So, there is a Sue, she’s a local Rockaway girl. We thought of changing the name after she and Neil parted ways, but Sue is a great friend of ours. Sunset Cove Officially Opens By Katie McFadden

Sunset Cove is officially open and it’s as nice as the name sounds. Offering a new and growing salt marsh that will serve as an ecological and educational haven, an added protective measure from flooding for Broad Channel, and a can’t beat area to catch the sun setting over the bay, with the city skyline or the Marine Parkway Bridge as a backdrop, Sunset Cove is a welcome new addition that will give those in Broad Channel and across the city, a way to escape the hustle and bustle without leaving the five boroughs. On Tuesday, August 20, the ribbon was officially cut on Sunset Cove Park, a 12.57-acre site nestled near the southern tip of Broad Channel. This new parkland was once the site of an abandoned and derelict marina that became a dumping ground. The area has a new lease on life that will

support all walks of life, from birds to fish, and the people that come to appreciate it all. The opening of Sunset Cove was a longtime in the making. After taking legal action, the city acquired the land in 2008 and ideas were thrown around about its future. A design was finalized in May 2016. Following the design, the project received bids that were nearly double the available budget,

effectively stalling progress. In October 2017, Mayor de Blasio allocated $7 million to match an existing $7 million from a Department of Interior – National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Grant and DEC Mitigation funding, allowing the project to get back on track. Construction began in spring 2018 and was completed in June 2019. The entire project includ-

ed the removal of 1,000 cubic yards of debris and nearly 30,000 cubic yards of hazardous and contaminated soil; restoration of 4.5 acres of salt marsh and seven acres of maritime upland; construction of a perimeter berm and walking trail; installation of 16,000 tons of clean sand; and the planting of 200,000 new plugs to reestablish the salt marsh. On Tuesday, those involved in making the park a reality, such as NYC Parks, the NYSDEC, local elected officials like Senator Joseph Addabbo, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and a representative for Councilman Eric Ulrich, Dan Mundy of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, Don Riepe of the Littoral Society, Alex Zablocki of the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and countless others, were on hand to celebrate with an official ribbon cutting. It’s been a tremendous collaborative effort, Mundy said. “You come down here and it is a way to get away. Probably some of the best sunsets that you’re ever gonna see in your life are down here. In the winter, all the way by the Marine Parkway Bridge and in the summer, all the way over to Manhattan, but it works beyond giving you that respite from life. It works in its functioning capacity as an ecological park.” Mundy also spoke about the education benefits the park will provide for future generations to come.

New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bravest at Sea By Katie McFadden

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen them on the water at events like the September 11 memorial, the Rockaway Warriors Weekend and even at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beach opening. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to miss when one of the FDNYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fireboats puts on a water display, wowing and wooing crowds, directing eyes to the water as cannons shoot the seawater from below, high into the sky. But the fireboats arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just there to bring an extra spark of excitement to a waterside ceremony. They play a very important role in keeping our city safe on the water, and in Rockaway, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Marine 3 and her crew that is one of the first on the scene in a water emergency. On Friday, August 16, The Rockaway Times joined Lieutenant Eric Berntsen, and firefighters Mark Rizzuto and Jerry Warnock, aboard Marine 3, the Sheepshead Bay-based boat that patrols the ocean and bay in an area that stems from

south of the Verrazano Bridge to Long Beach, or beyond if duty calls. And during the summer, the calls are consistent. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why Marine 3 is among three boats that make up the FDNY Marine unitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer detail, to address the increase in water emergencies during the summer, in addition to the FDNYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three other year-round boats in its fleet. From April 1 through November 1, Marine 3, a 33-foot aluminum boat patrols the local waterways, looking to assist

boaters in distress, or answering emergency calls that could include anything from capsized boats, inoperative boats in dangerous situations, searches and recoveries in drowning incidents, and of course, fires on boats or waterfront properties. The water cannon feature that dazzles spectators at ceremonies, is also utilized in fire emergencies. From an opening on the bottom of the boat, water is sucked up from below, into the cannon and pow-

erfully pumped out with help of a car motor. As they demonstrated how it works, shooting at an old NYC DEP Outfall, now known as The Round House to local fishermen, Lt. Berntsen handled the buttons that control the speed and direction of the water, while firefighter Rizzuto kept the boat stable, as the water pressure is so powerful, it can cause the boat to move about. That water pressure comes in hand during fire emergencies. When a fire tore through several boats in Marina 59 in 2016, Marine 3 was there to help put out the flames and tend to houseboat residents. When a fire erupted in the parking garage of the Kinga Plaza Mall in September 2018, Marine 3 was first on the scene, working to put out the flames from Mill Basin. Equipped with computer systems that can show water depth or can pick up things below, including fish, the boat can be a useful tool to help the crew during the unfortunate incident of searching for a body. An ocean search can be dangerous for all involved, but with several weeks of training before the summer detail begins, and continuous on-the-job training, the crew of Marine 3, made up of seven firefighters and three lieutenants, can handle it. “We were out there looking for the boy that died near Beach 59th a few weeks ago. We were in pretty big waves, searching near the jetty, and if we didn’t have a very experienced operator, we probably couldn’t have been searching as close as we did,” LT. Berntsen recalled. “It was dangerous. Our driver was on the wheel for two hours, nonstop, taking on the waves as we searched.”

Lt. Bernsten and firefighter Warnock, who are both on the summer detail with the FDNY marine unit for the first time this year, have gained invaluable experience from regulars on the detail, such as firefighter Rizzuto, who is on his sixth summer with the marine unit. “This has been amazing,” Lt. Berntsen

said. “The knowledge you gain by doing this every day, working with such talented people doesn’t compare.” Berntsen and Warnock both came in with little more than personal boating experience, are now winding down the summer with much more confidence on the water. “I love it,” Warnock said. “It’s a totally different experience, learning how to operate on the

water and it has definitely made me a better boater. I do miss going into fires on land, but we get to experience different types of rescues and emergencies. I’m so glad I was accepted to the program.” Some days are easier than others. When Marine 3 isn’t responding to a call, the crew spends the day simply patrolling the water while closely listening to the transmissions from the FDNY and Coast Guard radios. Sometimes the only thing they see are a whale or a pod of dolphin. And other times, there’s a little more action, like last week, when they came across three sailboats stuck on a sandbar. Though the crew couldn’t do anything to help the boaters until high tide arrived, they spent time talking to the passengers to make sure they were okay. Incidents like this tend to stem from inexperienced boaters, which the crew says there are plenty of during the summer. “Most of, or at least half of the incidents we encounter are due to inexperience. People put themselves in dangerous positions when they

don’t know what they’re doing,” Lt. Berntsen said. “A few weeks ago, we pulled three people off the jetty. They were trying to push their boat while the motor was running, which could have resulted in the boat capsizing or someone getting cut by a propeller. The girl didn’t know how to drive. She almost flipped the boat. Instead of just assisting, it turned into a rescue mission.” Those of the marine unit may spend all summer keeping our boaters and swimmers safe, but their abilities extend beyond emergencies in local waters. As part of their extensive training, those of the FDNY Marine Unit are prepared to deploy wherever needed, in the event of a hurricane or flooding in other parts of the United States. So while their summer detail may end on November 1 and the crew returns to their regular firehouses, they’re always at the ready to help those experiencing water emergencies. Those from Marine 3 have surely proven that the FDNY is not just the bravest on land, but also at sea.

Down With Downtown Plan Dear Editor: I am confused by your article about the Downtown Far Rockaway project and statements by Deputy DDC Commissioner Eric MacFarlane. Mr. MacFarlane says that the pipes are 80 years old. I believe that the pipes on my street are over 100 years old, but DDC is not replacing them even though the water mains are so corroded that it is impossible to see through them. Likewise, the discussion about flooding is absurd since the downtown area is one of the highest spots in Rock-

away—some 20-30 feet above sea level. I’ve only lived here some 69 years and I don’t ever remember flooding in the area. Beach Channel Drive between Hassock Avenue and the Nassau County line is another story. That location floods in a light drizzle at high tide. Also, it is interesting to hear Councilman Richards say that we have very narrow streets when part of the plan that he developed with DOT is to narrow the streets further. And you conclude the article with “DDC Director of Infrastructure Herve Mathelier, ended [the tour] at the Q22 bus layover at Beach 22nd Street and Mott Avenue. Mathelier exuberantly expressed that the area will soon be home to a sparkling new plaza with an event space and stage.” You failed to mention that the bus-

Yet cats are a perpetual hot topic on social media groups in Rockaway. Hundreds chime in about these feline vagabonds.

“Crazy Cat Ladies” are in abundance. These kind souls seek to provide sustenance to the resident grimalkins on the peninsula. Clowders begin to appear and take residence on various blocks and areas along the boardwalk. Their daily congregation becomes a nuisance for neighbors. The burn marks on lawns and pungent ammonia smell make backyards unusable. Nocturnal scavengers, such as raccoons begin to frequent the area, further infringing on the enjoyment of outdoor living space. Conflicts ensue. Neighbors argue, causing friction on blocks. Conflicts escalate to vandalism and even police involvement, yet both sides feel justified. Kindly, cat ladies are vilified, as are concerned residents advocating fines and penalties for residents who feed cats. What is the

solution? No idea, but the overabundance of any animal is never a good thing. As Carl Van Vechten observed, “The cat is the only animal without visible means of support who still manages to find a living in the city.” Cats are definitely living their best life here. Kay Sullivan Shut It Down Dear Editor: I would hope that the Public Service Commission shuts down National Grid. This is the company that, after it lost its contract to manage the LIPA electric system, used Sandy as an excuse to turn off power to vast areas of Long Island that hadn’t had a drop of flooding “for safety.” National Grid is a crooked company that should not be allowed to do business in this state. Breakfast Challenged

It has always been common wisdom that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is assumed that breakfast provides the fuel to boost the metabolism in order to maintain a healthy weight, keep a student attentive at school, and a worker sharp on the job. Over 100 years ago, in 1917, the same year that she cofounded the American Dietetic Society (now the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics), Lenna Frances Cooper wrote an article in Good Health magazine that noted: “in many ways, the breakfast is the most important meal of the day, because it is the meal that gets the day started.” Good Health was published

by the Battle Creek Sanitarium, a Michigan health resort run by Cooper’s mentor, John Harvey Kellogg, MD, the co-inventor of corn flakes. Dr. Kellogg’s brother started the cereal business that would become the Kellogg company. If you find it more than a coincidence that the brother (and perhaps investor as well) of the owner of a cereal company would publish material promoting breakfast as a meal not to be skipped, you’re not alone. Recently, scientists have been debating whether breakfast is important at all, let alone as the most important meal, at least in regard to weight control. While research into the health benefits

of intermittent fasting suggests that breakfast is the one meal that shouldn’t be skipped, a recent analysis of clinical trials that looked into breakfast’s effect on weight and energy concluded that skipping it, rather than eating it, might help people lose weight. Despite many national guidelines stressing the importance of eating breakfast, about one third of people in developed countries skip it. Experts have concluded that some researchers might have been misled “because multiple observational studies have shown that obese and diabetic people skipped meals more often than thin people.” A recently published study involving low-income fourth through sixth graders in Philadelphia concluded that providing breakfast in the classroom, as opposed to the cafeteria prior to the start of school, had the unintended consequence of increasing rates of obesity in the children. The authors suggested that some of the children might have eaten breakfast before coming to school, so when they ate again in the classroom, they consumed

Page 27 excess calories. In addition, the food served in the classroom was cold food in the form of cereal and muffins. Of course, the goal of school breakfast programs is not weight management but rather improving attendance. The authors of the Philadelphia study concluded that compared with skipping breakfast, breakfast meals consisting of solid food totaling at least 30 grams of protein and about 350 calories improved appetite control and satiety (fullness) response. What is clear is that more research needs to be done to determine how important skipping or eating breakfast is in regard to weight control, appetite control, food cravings, satiety, and snacking behavior. In addition, evidence points to breakfasts containing more protein and fruit with less carbohydrates (breads, rolls, muffins, cereals, and doughnuts) as being healthier. Self Care Is So Important Self-care is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and others. Refilling your container so that you are able to give back and support those who are in need of your help. We cannot be happy and content if we don’t nurture the body, mind and soul. How do you take care of yourself in this busy world? As summer begins to wind down, do you have any goals or plans for the upcoming year? Often it can start with a

simple plan to eat healthy and exercise more. Or maybe there is something you are seeking to learn. What would give you joy and happiness? Maybe waking up early and having quiet time for yourself to meditate, pray and sit in silence. Many of my neighbors go to church or the temple and seem to find peace and serenity with their faith. They are more at ease and seem to be happy. As I write this column, I am sit-

ting on my porch, listening to the birds, watching the children ride by on their bicycles and witnessing how blessed we are to live here. Finding time to just sit and observe. Self-care today is going to a Shred class at Crom to strengthen my body and mind, then teaching my gentle yoga class at Ocean Bliss Yoga with a room full of beautiful students. My life is simple yet fulfilling. I am a student for life and never seem to stop learning. Most importantly, I know that less is more. Finding time to be with the ones I love and not going to every party. Massage is another great way to relieve stress and care for your body and mind. To release, let go and start fresh. Our body tends to hold on to trauma and pain. We often search for the answers of why our body feels so raw and tender and the truth is emotions play a strong role in lodging injury within us. I have found many ways to release these blocks and free up the energy in the body. When your body feels good, your

In spite of the fact that we all (or do we) know that firearms and explosives are verboten in your luggage or on your person when you fly, there are still those who “forgot” they had a loaded pistol on their belt. That’s only one step short of telling the boarding agent you have a bomb in your suitcase. It’s a regular happenstance that some soul is arrested for trying to board with an illegal weapon. There are items well beyond guns and explosives that can trigger a long and serious talk with TSA. Often that happens when traveling with younger children. Parents are more likely to inspect the kid’s pullalong than a grandparent. But it should be done. Kids, especially young ones of the female variety, tend to pack a lot of cosmetics, hair

gels, shampoo and other liquid-like items. That could be a problem going through security. But make no mistake, adults of all persuasions are often guilty of the same error. All liquid carry-on items should be packed in a clear

Even though it was sealed, the smiling TSA agent confiscated it because it was over the size limit. TSA has announced its policy of permitting powder has changed and more than 12 ounces could be a no-no. Dry shampoo, baby powder and makeup powders all come under the new rule. Safe, follow the rules and avoid problems by following the requirements and using common sense. Remember, you will never win an argument with TSA.

I don't know how to get along with my boyfriend. Whenever I ask him to do something, he always fights me on it. Always! It's so annoying, and eventually he does what I'm asking, but he always puts up some kind of fight or resistance. I watched my parents be this way my whole life, and I DO NOT want to be doing the same, which is being a nag, but I can't seem to help it! We definitely love each other and so many people say we act like an old married couple. I always think I'm going to do something different, and then poof, I feel like it's always the same, and I start it. How else can I do things so he doesn't fight with me? I want to ask things and not feel naggy, annoying or needy. HELP!? Dear Nagging Nelly, SUCH A GOOD QUESTION!!! So many goodies and details here that can get you going on a different path, other than the boxing ring, and at the same time, the most important thing is to realize your partnership has a bad habit, and habits need consistency and a belief that they will change and can change, with time, energy and the belief. That may take some time. If you agree and understand that. Cool! The next important thing is to be willing to admit out loud, in real time, if possible, (in your own words, or these) that you don't like how "this" is going and you wish you didn't communicate this way. That's it! No blaming, no shaming him or yourself, just the admission that “this sucks" is so human, and so loving. The next important thing is to work with yourself. This part

has nothing to do with him. First, see when you are asking your boyfriend for something, what mood are you in? What time of day is it? What mood is he in? Are you exhausted? What's your tone of voice? Do you subtly believe that it's going to be the "same old" every time? Are you whining? Are you subtly complaining while you're asking him? Looking at these details really matter. Rewriting this bad habit of feeling naggy or needy, or annoying is doable, I've helped many clients work out their communication styles within their partnership. And if it's a woman and man partnership, the woman can really introduce the new habit, and it's always better to have support on this, it can also be so easy to fall backwards into old habits. And the fact that you are asking at all is amazing, and the first step of sharing out loud, in real time, is powerful. Keep up the great awareness work! Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Confessions of “I”

I am a mom with a 10-year-old nonverbal girl on the autism spectrum. I am a mom blessed with a wonderful family, who is always there to help with care of my daughter. I am a mom blessed with a co-parent, my daughter’s dad and separated husband, who I can call any time of day or night, not just regarding the care of my daughter, but when I am seeking advice about my own daily rants about life. I am a mom who is truly blessed, but forget perfection. Admittedly, I am a mess. I sometimes feel my daughter’s dad has the patience of Job and the wisdom of King Solomon. With my daughter, he is beyond patient and loving, and well, if you talk to my immediate family, I simply don’t measure up. Why? Because I am afraid. She is a well-muscled little girl, who weighs just shy of 20 pounds below my weight. A simple walk down the street is a struggle for me. When she is intent on going somewhere or wants something, I literally feel like I am being dragged by a team of horses. She is that strong! So, I take the cowardly route, and most times, leave her at home with either my granny or the caregiver. So, when I see parents of other children, autistic or not, there is this harness of guilt I car-

ry. I may be smiling and being chipper on the outside, but inside, I feel like a damn poser. My grandmother often says, “Take ‘I’ out of it.” For example, if I’m ranting about something and I use the pronoun, “I,” she would say, “Take ‘I’ out of it. So, recently, I started to ponder on the definition of “I.” According to Wikipedia, the pronoun, “I,” is the first-person singular nominative case personal pronoun in modern English. It is used to refer to one's self. The grammatical variants of “I” are me, my, mine, and myself. I recently watched a videoblog, “Finding Cooper’s Voice.” The title is “I Had Become My Son's Disability.” I was struck. Here is a mom that I have avidly followed for years, who I looked at as the superhero of autism moms. I had no idea that she was divorced, though God bless her, has since remarried her husband. She related that her son’s autism consumed her, and well, her relationships with others, including her husband, fractured. I related because though folks know me for this column, founding the Rockaway Beach Autism Families support group, working for The Rockaway Times, and other community endeavors, I am so alone. fastly investing my soul in the community has been a coping mechanism to deal with autism. I loathe the term “severely autistic.” My daughter is not severely autistic, she’s just challenging. When I look at her beautiful face, especially when she is melting with giggles, I wonder how God blessed me with this beautiful little girl, who admittedly sometimes I am afraid of—not afraid of her vivacious spirit and strength, but her autism. In the videoblog, Cooper’s Voice, the mom states: “He’s funny. He makes me so happy. And I realized that fixing him and saving him is about me. He’s fine. He doesn’t need any of those things. Don’t worry so much about the kid, worry about yourself. Fix yourself. Fix your relationships. Have you pushed anyone away because of autism? Your thoughts…about yourself is the real enemy. Look at your kid. They are so happy.” And, she’s right. My daugh-

The Rockaway Times ter is happy, but moms and dads out there, we need to reflect, review and move forward in throwing off that harness of guilt and self-isolation. Do I want to be in a meaningful relationship with someone worthy to be a part of my daughter’s life? Yes, of course! However, that’s a road I’m still trying to map out. In the interim, I’m grateful. So granny, I disagree. To move forward, heal oneself and learn, “I” needs to be a part of the conversation. Blunders will be made, but one must appreciate the journey and surrender all one’s qualms about being imperfect to our Creator. Summer Classic Championships: Classics After ten weeks of heated competition, Championship Week for the 35th St. Francis Summer Classic began with the Girls Grammar Senior division on Tuesday, August 13. Sixth-seeded Blue Bear Risk Management made a valiant run through the playoffs but could not knock off Rockaway W.I.S.H. who continued to build their lead throughout the game for a 55-37 victory led by Caitlin Mullen, Julia Courtney, and Lauren Tubridy. Coaches Loretta Courtney, Beth Hanning, and Marianne Hanning received contributions from the entire team including Nora Tubridy, Brooke Tracy, Caragh McMorrow, Holly Murray, Keira O'Sullivan, Gabby Reddan, Cadence Coffey, Ava Abruzzo, and Kathleen Conti. The Men's Open final was rescheduled from Thursday to Wednesday, when rain forced the game to move inside to the gym. It was an epic contest that was witnessed by an overflowing crowd that packed the room. League leading scorer Charlie Marquardt poured in 27 first half points on an assortment of drives to the basket and long-range bombs to stake JG Electric to a 36-28 halftime lead. Malbro Construction countered quickly after the break to erase the deficit and build a lead of its own as Kevin Crockett heated up, augmented by Pat McDerby. However, when McDerby fouled out, Malbro was soon down to five players and JG rallied again behind Marquardt, who finished with 44. After cutting the lead to three

BCAC Rascals Champs Crowned The BCAC Shamrock Summer Shootout is winding down and playoffs kicked off last week. Those in the Rascals Division played on Thursday, August 15 and champs were crowned on the girls and boys teams. For the boys Rascals, the team sponsored by Healy’s Pub and coached by Joe Graham, won the championship. For the girls, the championship went

to the Steinway Moving team, coached by father-daughter duo, Ed Cashen and Allison Chavanne. The final BCAC Shamrock Summer Shootout games will continue with the Senior Boys playing for the championship win on Monday, August 26, and on August 28, the teens will play a fun game against local police officers.
