Making His Mark
DEVELOPER BUYS THEATER FOR $6 MILLION+ By Kevin Boyle
It's curtains for the old movie theater on Beach 116th Street. On Wednesday, August 15, the long-abandoned eyesore was sold for $6.125 million and now awaits a wrecking ball. The show stopping news is not necessarily the sale price, but the identity of the buyer. A privately held LLC was the official purchaser, but the Marcal Group—the developers of the condo now going up across the street from the theater—is the de facto new owner. The acquisition by Marcal makes their Beach 116th investments considerable. Principal Mark Caller and others now own the site of the old Beach Club, the building that houses Cuisine by Claudette, the theater, and the vacant lot adjacent to the theater which runs all the way to Beach 115th Street. Purchase prices alone for these properties total almost $15 million. The former owner, Michael Konig, held the theater for more than 20 years as it fell into disrepair. When he agreed to sell in March, he said, “It was just time.” The new owner isn’t likely to watch the building fall further into disrepair. Demolition plans have already been submitted to and approved by the Department of Buildings. Some may have noticed scaffolding and crews removing parts of the building that could be hazardous if they were to fall. On the west side of the street, the new condo development, One Sixteen, is rising fast. This will be an 86-unit project that will be adjoined by eight townhouse-style condos facing Beach 117th Street. As The Rockaway Times was going to press, the NY State Attorney General approved the condo plan allowing the units to be marketed and pre-sold. All will be sold at market-rate prices. According to condo reps, building amenities include a part-time attended lobby, an expansive landscaped roof deck with ocean and bay views, on-site parking, and a fitness

Rockaway for investment in 2015, first considering buying the Peninsula Hospital property for an affordable housing project. The potential of Beach 116th Street, however, proved more appealing. He plunked down $5 million for the property that was once home to the popular Beach Club restaurant and catering hall. In 2016, he met with business leaders of the area and assured them he was putting up “a magnificent building” and fully believed in the street’s great future. In 2017 and now in 2018, he purchased additional parcels demonstrating a greater commitment to the block’s revival. Plans for the theater site are still developing, though it is expected the owners will consider building rental units, both residential and commercial. The new construction is the first significant development on the Beach 116th commercial corridor since the Ocean Grande condominium was completed in 2006. Across the street from the Ocean Grande, on the east side of the block, a strip of storefronts remains vacant. This property is owned by Seawave Realty Corp, the same group that owns the Park Inn Adult Home on the boardwalk. With a needy population including those with mental health issues, the Park Inn has long been a source of consternation for locals, who point to the home as a main source of problems on the block. Even that property might join in the 116th turnaround. Owners and top staff say plans call for an upscale assisted-living facility. Konig, who leases the property, said, “God willing. Within approximately one year.” As for the One Sixteen condo project, with the Attorney General approval complete, a sales office will open in the storefront next to Claudette's at 145 Beach 116th Street. Caller says he hopes to get a Certificate of Occupancy for the building and have buyers moving in by the end of 2019.

Neighbors Help Solve Hit-and-Run Mystery By Katie McFadden
Time and time again, Rockaway residents have been there for their neighbors. On Tuesday, August 14, that rang true once again, when one neighbor did something not-so-neighborly. Jim Slowey, of Rockaway Park, was greeted by a nightmare when he was leaving for work early Tuesday morning— his car was totaled. “I walk out of my house at five in the morning and find my car completely wrecked,” he said. The car had been parked by the Seaside Library branch on Beach 117th, when it was seemingly hit by another vehicle, rendering it useless, and with no trace of who had done it. Slowey immediately called the police, who allegedly said there was nothing they could do since the person left the scene. But Slowey wasn’t giving up. “I began knocking on neighbors’ doors to ask if anyone had camera footage,” he said. Ad-
ditionally, tips began to come through after Slowey posted photos of the car to his Facebook page, as luckily, some neighbors had seen what happened. “Between different accounts, I was able to piece together what happened and it seemed to take place between 11:30 p.m. and midnight,” he said. Slowey approached the corner deli on Beach 116th Street, plus Pickles and Pies and the library to see if they had camera footage from that time. Unfortunately, the deli cameras were not close enough, but Slowey discovered that a worker at Pickles and Pies also had interest in his plight, as when the mystery driver hit Slowey’s car, it was struck so hard that it caused damage to the car behind him, which belonged to a Pickles and Pies staff member. Unfortunately, Slowey also found that the library, which was closest to the scene, doesn’t have cameras. Slowey, who had to take off from work to deal with the or-
deal, was starting to lose hope. “I thought I was screwed. My car was totaled. Casino Auto towed it and I don’t have collision insurance, only liability,” he said. That afternoon, he was sitting at The Wharf, having a few beers, when he received a call that would save the day. “I got a call from a private number, saying where to find the car that hit me. It was on Beach 117th Street.” With the anonymous tip, Slowey was able to locate the black car that conveniently had white paint that matched Slowey’s vehicle, and slight damage to the front. “We got him,” Slowey said. Upon finding the car, Slowey called 911 and coincidentally, a young man started approaching the property where the car was. “I asked him if it was his
car, and he admitted it,” Slowey said. “He said he swerved to avoid a pedestrian and said he left a note on my car. There was no note.” When police arrived, they allegedly issued the suspect a ticket for fleeing the scene, and Slowey was able to obtain his insurance information. “If it wasn’t for my neighbors helping out by offering to show me their camera footage and offering tips on Facebook, and with the phone call, I wouldn’t have caught him. I appreciate everyone’s help and it’s nice to know that I live in a community of people who are there for each other,” Slowey said. “Rockaway is an amazing place.”

Rockaway’s New Ramen House Opens on Restaurant Row By Nicole Taylor-Lang
Since it opened 13 years ago, O’Sake Japanese Restaurant has become a community staple by serving up sushi and other Japanese delicacies on Beach 116th Street. Now O’Sake’s owner, Danny Tung, has expanded the O’Sake name by opening Rockaway’s first year-round ramen restaurant, O’Sake Ramen House. Tung is no stranger to the restaurant business. “People say having a restaurant is hard but I love this, it’s a hobby for me,” Tung said. “I opened my first restaurant when I was 16 years old in the Bronx.” In 2005, Tung chose to expand his restaurant roots by bringing his culinary delights to Rockaway and he opened O’Sake Japanese Restaurant. Now he’s expanded once again by bringing something that was missing on Rockaway’s Restaurant Row—ramen. O’Sake Ramen House, located in Rockaway Beach, recently opened its doors on August 5, much to the anticipation of eager neighbors wanting to give it a try, and it proved to be an instant hit. “The first Sunday I had to close early because we were so busy that we ran out of everything by 8 p.m., so business has been good,” Tung said. “I got the Tonkotsu ramen and it was delicious,” Arverne resident, Glenn DiResto said. “Traditionally ramen is not a dish I would eat at home, but I loved it there...so good!” This isn’t your average ramen that you survived on in college
for about 50 cents a bag or less. These traditional Japanese dishes are made with freshly-made ingredients, even the noodles. A bowl may come packed with not just ramen noodles in broth, but meat like pork belly, beef, chicken or seafood, boiled eggs, vegetables, and seasonings and sauces for added flavor. Plus they even have vegan options. “I ordered the seafood ramen which was amazing. They have a lot of different types of seafood in it with a creamier broth than the regular pork one,” local, AnnaClare Del Vecchio said. However ramen isn’t the only thing on the menu. There are plenty of appetizers to choose from, like edamame, popcorn shrimp and even sweet potato fries, plus unique drinks and desserts you won’t find anywhere else. “After our meal the waitress gave us a complimentary desert which was very tasty and interesting,”

Del Vecchio said. “It was chia seeds with lychee, which was very light and refreshing to have after a meal.” And according to Tung, this debut menu is just the beginning, as he plans to add even more options. Tung puts a lot of thought and love into his food. “Other ramen places will put stuff on the pork to store it, but I make mine from scratch everyday,” he said. Ramen shops have been popping up a lot in the NYC area, but now it’s more convenient for the ramen lovers on the peninsula to enjoy. Rockaway first got a taste of spruced up ramen when Andrew Field of Tacoway Beach opened his Noodle Beach pop up for the winter, starting in 2015. However with O’Sake Ramen House, locals can now enjoy ramen year-round. “My daughter is a big fan of ramen. She actually goes into the city for it and now she said, she doesn't
have go there anymore,” local, Bill Gehlhaus said. O’Sake Ramen House is a much-welcomed addition to the list of businesses that have opened in a post-Hurricane Sandy Rockaway. “I am always excited when we have new businesses open, especially food businesses. It’s exciting to see local residents/owners expand and open another restaurant,” DiResto said. “Rockaway continues to be on the rise.” If ramen is a dish you crave or if you never tried it before Tung says, “give us a try.” He hopes to keep growing his businesses here in Rockaway and continue to keep locals happy and full. “I love this neighborhood,” Tung said. Local Artist O’Leary Inspires Resilience with Solo Exhibit By Kami-Leigh Agard
In the days following Hurricane Sandy, Rockaway native, Michael O’Leary, found himself both homeless and jobless. However, for O’Leary, like much of Rockaway, the destruction the unmerciful hurricane wreaked, spurred on a revival. However, for O'Leary, it became a turning point where his love for creating abstract expressionist art resurrected, and he has not turned back ever since. O’Leary, the artist and now manager of beloved local pub, Connolly’s, was born in Rockaway, but moved around quite a bit, living in Long Island and other parts of Queens. “I was born in St. John’s Hospital, but my family moved out of Rockaway when I was young. Queens for a while. However, after the neighborhood became riddled with crime, I was desperate to move and was on the hunt for a cheap apartment. At a friend’s barbecue, I found out about a reasonably-priced basement apartment for rent in Rockaway, and immediately grabbed the opportunity to move back home,” O’ Leary said. That was 12 years ago, and O’Leary has never left Rockaway, even after he lost everything in Sandy. “My girlfriend, now wife, had just moved in two weeks before Sandy, and then we lost everything. However, for some reason, it didn’t discourage us from wanting to stay here and just start all over. There’s something about Rockaway that makes you want to stay, even when
life throws you every curve ball,” he said. The school of hard knocks is not new to O’Leary. After pursuing a degree in graphic design for two years at the Art Institute of Philadelphia (AIP), he had to leave because with thousands of dollars in student loans, he just could not afford it anymore. Then another crushing blow. “After leaving AIP, I applied to the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. After trying to transfer my credits, I learned that AIP was not even an accredited art school. So now in the hock with debt, I had no choice but to abandon my dreams to pursue art,” he said. When asked why he turned to art after Sandy, O’Leary Continued on page 11

Continued from Page 10 said that creating art was his longtime passion, and the devastation all around the community, actually ignited a spark. “With no job or home to call my own, I was scared, and felt I had nothing else to lose. I was just grateful that my family, friends and I were alive, but with a lot of time on my hands, that creative itch came back,” O’Leary said. O’Leary used that creative itch to get, well, creative. He started collecting old windows people were throwing out, and he started painting on them, then selling them to make a few hundred bucks. “It was great because I got this energy to be creative again. Though at the time, a lot of my paintings were gloomy, reflecting the devastation of the storm, they soon evolved into brighter colors that almost told the story of the slowly, but surely resilMulti-Class Discounts and Sibling Discounts
ient resurrection of the community amidst the chaos,” he said. When asked about his technique of Jackson Pollock-esque abstract expressionism otherwise known as action painting, O’Leary was frank. “Rather than propping a canvas on an easel, I just lay a massive canvas on the floor, and drip paint. While it dries, I just stare at it, thinking what I can pull from it. Then I just take a tube of paint and use it as a pen to draw abstract images or strokes in an unconventional way. I don’t approach the canvas with a preconceived notion of what it’s going to look like, it just unravels on it’s own. However, my mantra is always to use color to inspire happiness,” O’Leary said. In one painting, the colors are so vibrant, and the strokes and graphic images are so bold, the feeling evoked is almost manic. Amidst a bedlam of what looks like a traffic street light, sharp eyes, glaring teeth, shark and surf-

board fins, a poking finger, cigarette butts, protest and stop signs — there’s a fist that subliminally emerges, reminiscent of the giant Joe Louis fist that hangs in a Detroit monument — as if to say, “Forget the chaos of life, we got this!” The image leaves you dripping with hope and the conviction that—life is good. And since Sandy, life has gotten good for O’Leary. In 2016, he and his then-fiancé, Becky Brouder, took over as managers of Rockaway’s longtime favorite pub, Connolly’s. A few months later, in early 2017, he and Brouder got married in a destination wedding in Rincon, PR. And to top it all of, O’Leary’s art has started to take off. He has exhibited his larger than life abstract expressionism work in galleries in Manhattan, Long Island and even as far as San Francisco. And now with his first upcoming solo exhibit at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, he couldn’t be happier.
Page 11 O’Leary says Brandon D’Leo, co-owner of the Surf Club, invited him to host his own solo art exhibit. “Last year, Brandon was having a beer at Connolly’s and we got to talking, and I showed him my artwork upstairs. He immediately said, ‘Mike, I want you to have your own solo exhibit at the Surf Club.’ Well, I grabbed the chance, followed up, and now here I am about to have my own solo art show here at home in Rockaway,” he said. It is life's greatest losses that most inspire creativity, and O’Leary is Rockaway-stamped proof of that. The opening night of Michael O’Leary abstract expressionist art exhibit at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club (302 Beach 87th Street) is this Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m. After the opening, O’Leary’s exhibit will be on display through September 5. Ferry Weak Reply Dear Editor: (Danny Ruscillo saw Peter Galvin’s letter to the editor in the 8-16 RT issue complaining about ferry service. Ruscillo, co-chair of the Community Board 14 Transportation Committee contacted the NYC Economic Development Corporation for a response. He received the following): Thanks for your patience. I hope you had a great weekend. The Jamaica Bay (and Breezy Point) are vessels being chartered to supplement NYC Ferry service during
peak season. As you know, we have operated this summer with the highest capacity and frequency that we’ve had on this route to date, largely because we’re working with other operators to secure these chartered vessels. These charters do not always have the same amenities that NYC Ferry boats do. While we understand that many of our faithful Rockaway commuters have become accustomed to the NYC Ferry vessels, we are able to serve substantially more riders with the larger capacity chartered vessels and have been able to keep wait times and lines down. As we continue to receive the new 350-passenger NYC Ferry vessels, we expect this situation to improve and eventually reduce the need for chartered boats. Carnival Heats Up Far Rock Once Again Far Rock was hot, hot, hot last weekend as the 2nd Annual Caribbean Carnival came to town. Thousands of people lined the streets and packed Bayswater Park on Saturday, August 18 to see a spectacle of parade floats and colorful costumes, and hear calypso, reggae and soca music from some renowned artists. “We are proud to bring this spectacular celebration to the community for a second year,” Sanders said. “My team along with residents, leaders and multiple organizations worked hand in glove to make this amazing day possible. It is a day when we can celebrate all cultures – Caribbean and American – those from Rockaway and those from all over this great city and state. Out of many, we are one. That's the motto of Trinidad — together we aspire, together we achieve.” The Carnival, hosted by Sen-
ator James Sanders, was conducted in collaboration with the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA), Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) and NYC Parks Department. It started on Beach 20th Street and Seagirt Boulevard, and culminated with live performances at Bayswater Park. There were also plenty of merchants selling the food of the islands as well as cool drinks and sweet treats. Senator Sanders was joined at the Carnival by Cynthia Nixon, candidate for the Governor of New York, City Council Member Jumaane Williams, who is running for Lieutenant Governor of New York, City Council Member Donovan Richards and Assembly Member Stacey Pheffer-Amato. The goal of the Carnival was to celebrate the various arts and culture of the Carribean while
highlighting the hidden jewel that is the Rockaways. Many civic groups and performers walked the parade route, dancing, singing and waving the flags of the many Caribbean countries. When the parade portion concluded at the park, dozens of performers took the stage including Lord Nelson, Poser, and Natasha Williams, all of whom were honored with proc-
lamations by Senator Sanders. MC Wassy was also honored, but unable to attend, so a representative accepted on his behalf. Other artists who took to the stage to perform included Grammy nominated GC, Billy Bob “The Jamaican Cowboy,” and Mr. Pearly. The MC was Sherry Morgan of VP Records. The nice weather affords us all more time outdoors, which is the perfect opportunity to visit your local National Park, whether it be Floyd Bennett Field, Riis Beach or the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It is the National Park Service’s mission to preserve “unimpaired, the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.” And with an emphasis on those future generations, a program called ECOlife hosted over 900 students to help them make the park their own. Kids ages 7-17 visited Floyd Bennett Field to participate in ECOlife through a partnership with Millennium and YMCA Day camps. This six-week program is a summer educational opportunity

that allows summer camps to bring their students to the park for an on-site field education experience. This summer, park rangers focused on sustainability, outdoor skills and the local ecosystems. This coming weekend (August 25 and 26), Beach Sessions returns to Rockaway Beach for its fourth season. True to its name, the performance series, curated by producer and former Rockaway resident, Sasha Okshteyn, brings dance to the exquisite beaches of the Rockaway peninsula. A New York City native, Okshteyn grew up surrounded by an abundance of cultural offerings in public spaces, which fostered a strong belief that the arts should be accessible. “Why shouldn’t free public art be available in Rockaway as well?” she asks. Community engagement is a huge part of the mission of Beach Sessions — Okshteyn aims to engage demographics that might not otherwise be exposed to modern dance, particularly Rockaway’s youth and low-income communities. Over the years, partners of Beach Sessions have included Rockaway Artists Alliance, Arts in Parts, Queens Council for the Arts, City Parks Foundation: Partnership in Parks, Surfrider Foundation, The Rockaway Retreat House, The Rockaway Times, and The Wave.
The return of Beach Sessions to Rockaway sparks an interesting conversation about the role of arts and culture in economic development. As is noted in many urban communities nationwide, arts and culture can serve as a common language to bring together disparate communities, engaging the public in something tangible and moving, that creates a sense of place, and eliminating social class from cultural experiences. A local example is MoMA PS1 and Rockaway Artists Alliance’s Rockaway!, a celebration and illumination of Rockaway’s recovery process in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Looking back on the history of New York City, we can see patterns of neighborhoods blossoming following the migration of artists. Many come to NYC for the thriving arts and cultural environment, and the arts are closely tied to the vibrancy and personality of a neighborhood. In Rockaway, the unique personality of our commercial corridors is a function of the artistry and character of our local businesses. We can find the talent of local Rockaway artists in the culinary offerings of cafes and bakeries like Cuisine by Claudette and Fat Cardinal Provisions, the curated fashion of boutiques like Zingara Vintage and Lana’s Loft, and local bars and restaurants that value live music and performance art, like Caracas, Epstein's, Rustwoods, and Rockaway Brewing Co. Rockaway is flavored and defined by these business/ artist partnerships. On a higher level, this deep valuing of the arts is upheld in our city government: The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) is one of the 2018 recipients of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs’ Building Community Capacity Grant, which offers community-based development organizations and cultural nonprofits the opportunity to team up to strengthen the role of culture in NYC neighborhoods. RWA is partnering with the Rockaway Artists Alliance to conduct a neighborhood arts inventory and community-driven cultural planning. While it is apparent that major income discrepancies still exist throughout the peninsula, Rockaway has seen an overall economic boost in the last few years. (According to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli’s “An Economic Snapshot of the Rockaways” report, in 2016, the number of businesses in Rockaway was 11 percent higher than before Sandy, and total sales in that same year exceeded pre-storm numbers by 35 percent.). However, one of the major economic challenges of the Rockaway peninsula is the task of encouraging beachgoers

There are currently various initiatives in place aiming to facilitate that connection, including the Combrr application, the Everything Rockaway application, and the Rockaway Business Alliance’s Rockaway ConneX. In the spirit of connectivity, Beach Sessions 2018 moves audience members across the peninsula, transforming three diverse locations: the beach, the boardwalk, and the Rockaway Castle. The evening of August 25 begins on the beach at Beach 110th, with a procession down the boardwalk leading audience members to The Castle by way of Beach 117th, where performances from 14 artists of various disciplines offer audiences the opportunity to mold their own experience. The evening of August 25 ends in a dance party, featuring local D.J.s, Brother Nature and Baby Love. The Sunday performance, “Flip it and Reverse it,” changes the direction of the performance; audience members start at the Castle and end at Beach 110th. The mission of this year's series is “to explore the full capabilities of the peninsula through art.” With the vision of creating thriving commercial corridors across the peninsula, supporting arts and culture will help contribute to the social impact of the Rockaways. Beware The Fall Falls are the leading cause of injury-related morbidity and mortality among older adults in the United States. A study done in 2014 showed that more than 28 percent of adults over the age of 65, who lived in the community (not institutionalized), reported falling which resulted in 29 million falls (37.5 percent of which needed medical treatment or restricted activity for a day or longer) and an estimated 33,000 deaths in 2015. Effective primary care interventions to prevent falls use various approaches to identify those at increased risk. No one instrument has been identi-
fied as accurate and feasible to identify older adults at risk for falls. Many studies use a variety of risk factors, functional tests, or both, involving gait, balance, or mobility to identify those at risk. The most commonly used factor to identify those at risk is a history of falls. Once someone has been identified for being at risk for falls, exercise interventions offer the best means of preventing future falls. Exercise interventions can include supervised individual and group exercise classes and physical therapy. These interventions can focus on improving gait and balance. In 2008, the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services recommended that older adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, as well as muscle-strengthening activities twice a week. Also recommended was balance training on three or more days per week for older adults at risk for falls because of a recent fall or difficulty walking. Studies on falls have used a number of assessments to evaluate oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s risk of falling including balance, gait, vision, postural blood pressure (i.e. BP that drops precipitously when one goes from sitting to standing), medications, environment, cognition, and psychological health. Intervention components included group or individual exercise, psychological therapy (including cognitive therapy), nutrition therapy, education, medication management, urinary incontinence management, environmental modification (i.e. removing area rugs, wires, ta-
The Rockaway Times ble legs, etc. that present a trip hazard), physical or occupational therapy, social or community services, and referral to specialists where appropriate. Lastly, studies looked at Vitamin D supplementation in the absence of osteoporosis or osteopenia and found no benefit. In short, if you know of someone who may be at risk for falls, intervention now before a fall occurs is essential. Start with a visit to the doctor. Reviewing medications, recommending an exercise program, reviewing safety issues around the house, getting a home nursing and/or social service intervention, and evaluating medical problems like urinary incontinence are all important steps to preventing older persons from falling. Back To School It’s that time again for many of the children and teachers to head back to school and say goodbye to summer. One of the hardest things to do is abandon the beach, especially here in Rockapulco! We live in paradise and no one wants to leave this peninsula. For those of us left behind, we will miss you terribly. It’s not the same when our summer friends bid us farewell. But rest assured, before you know it, you will all be back. Home will always be here. Change in a regular schedule can cause havoc for some peo-
ple. But we know change is inevitable in all facets of life, so we must learn to go with the flow and adapt. Learning to create a new routine wherever you go. Going away to college is a huge transition. It requires discipline and learning to create a structured day with the many free hours. Some majors have few spare hours while others have more free time than work time. Keeping busy is key. Developing a practice of equanimity is of utmost importance. Most young people are just beginning to get to know themselves
when they are thrown into an environment that has a tremendous amount of peer pressure. Self-control can be difficult, to say the least. You will learn so much from this life experience and every parent just prays for your safe return. So study harder than you play. This is an opportunity for you to soar, not everyone is given the chance to go away to college to study. Parents dropping children off to college for the first time will be heartbroken. But this will pass with time. For one thing, you will sleep better not waiting for them to come home. The fact is you have taught them all there is to know, now it is up to them to execute what they have learned. No one is perfect so mistakes will be made and they will learn from these lessons. Everyone has a journey and we cannot always protect our children. They must leave and we must trust the universe. I have three children, two have already graduated from college, survived and returned home. Trust me, I cried a lot more when they returned home! One
Page 25 more to finish this year, God willing. My prayers and thoughts are with the parents who say goodbye to their sons and daughters who serve in our military. We have many families in Rockaway, Breezy and Broad Channel whose children have served and continue to serve our country. We thank you and are forever grateful for your selfless service. I have great respect for the parents who are able to live a somewhat normal life while your children are away in dangerous parts of the world. I know some of these parents well, as do many of you, so we thank you all for your generosity and strength during these times. God bless them and keep them safe. Today I affirm: letting go isn’t easy and change may be difficult, but the only way I will develop the courage to nurture my higher self is to make room for uncomfortable lessons and learn from them. May you be happy, may you be healthy, live with ease and be free of suffering.

Back in the old days, it was called “Hammels Boulevard.” It was steadily improved and paved with Belgian blocks that laid flush with the grooved girder trolley tracks put in around 1916. Beach 88th Street is on the right, and the borderline of Hammels on the west. The oval hanging sign (almost in center) is where Rivoli Movie House was located. Today’s postcard is an insert from the publication, “The Rockaways, A Postcard History Series,” by E. Lucev & Arcadia Publishing. Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev, Sr. (1933-2018).

Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1 package chicken tenders (about 8 pieces) 1- ½ lb. turkey bacon Sea salt Pepper Smoked paprika Garlic powder Brown sugar Olive oil or butter Directions:
The Rockaway Times Heat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a foil-lined pan with either olive oil or butter. Sprinkle salt, pepper, garlic powder and smoked paprika on both sides of chicken tenderloins. Wrap turkey bacon around the tenderloins. Sprinkle turkey bacon wrapped chicken tenderloins with brown sugar. Bake 25 minutes on middle rack. Raise pan 4 inches and broil approximately 5 minutes until turkey bacon crisps.

Review: All For Nothing by Walter Kempowski

There is a mass exodus of refugees fleeing in below-zero weather; ultimately, 300,000 will perish. In their path is Georgenhof Manor, where the well-to-do von Globig family goes about their days insulated not only from the cold but also from their imminent doom. Mother Katharina is warned by her husband
Vagueness and an inability to connect, however, do not keep danger at bay and reality shatters the von Globig family forever. Peter, the young son, is the only one to escape from the old world to the new. What makes this book remarkable is Kempowski's restraint with emotion; he conveys none, trusting readers to intuit the feelings of the characters from their actions. This opens the story to multitudes of interpretation, as readers with different points of view might have different perceptions. Similar to what could be called The Isherwood I Am A Camera style (although Isherwood never used that phrase and apparently became annoyed when asked about it), facts are presented with almost no embellishment. It might

be risky to give readers nothing to interpret but simple facts, albeit presented through his own lens, but trusting readers so implicitly is a rare act of respect by an author. Kempowski exercises this technique to perfection. Max Frisch is another writer who has occasionally adopted this approach. He described it in an interview, "There are other ways to show them—body language, or silence—that can be very strong. And maybe, too, one has a distrust of words; one fears that they won’t be interpreted correctly. It’s very difficult to describe a feeling and not to lie a little bit, to put it on a higher level or to blind yourself. So I don’t trust myself to describe my feelings, but I like to show them by a piece of

The Georgenhof soon becomes a pit-stop for an endless stream of the dispossessed, including a stamp collecting political economist, a Nazi violinist, a painter, a baron, and a Jewish refugee. The violinist even plays while rumbling sounds of fighting can be heard in the distance, recalling Nero fiddling while Rome burned.

Riis Beach to Host Architects Sandcastle Contest
This year’s Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest may have come and gone, but this weekend, there’s another chance to see the amazing things people can do with sand. This time, it’s the American Institute of Architects that will be putting their architecture skills to the test by using sand as their material, so their work is sure to impress. On Saturday, August 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., teams of architects will be heading to the beach at Riis Park for a sandcastle contest called ArchSandFest 2018. The teams will be build-
ing their creations until 2 p.m., when judges will come around to pick the best of the best. The sculptures will be judged on originality of concept, artistic execution, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site. The winners will be announced at around 2:45 p.m. Winners get up to $200 in cash. It is not clear exactly where the competition will be held, but if you head to Riis and see some amazing sculptures, you’re likely in the right place. Summer Classic Champions Crowned By Keith Goldberg
The 34th edition of the St. Francis de Sales Summer Classic has come to an end. The season concluded with the Boys Grammar senior championship on Friday, August 17. Brady Anderson poured in 35 points as Ridgewood Savings Bank outlasted TGA-NYC 51-48. Frank Walker nearly brought back TGA with his clutch 3-point shooting, but Ridgewood held on. Coach John Mullally's team, in addition to Anderson, included Ronan Mullally, Charlie Kinzie, Kyle Fabiszewski, Lenny Mannino, Greg Marney, Randy Koenig, Nick Milone and Tommy Davey. The night began with the Boys Grammar Middle game, another close affair won by R. Tyne Painting 36-34 over Walsh Management. Timmy Hayes led Tyne with 19, supported by teammates, Brayden Ronayne, Matt Reilly, Colin Courtney, Tommy Martin, Conor Monahan, Brendan Mullen, Brayden Tracy, Pat Doyle, and Ian Erhard. Coaches, Rob Tyne and John Ronayne, guided the squad to the title. Thursday was the marquee night highlighted by the Men's Open Championship. After a tight contest all game, Caiazzo Plumbing & Heating held off a late charge by JG Electric in the final 30 seconds to pull out the win 7269 as Cody Gauvard sank the clinching free throws. Charlie Marquardt put on an incredible show with 48 points for JG Electric. Brian Kelly led Caiazzo with 27 and, in addition to Gauvard, was joined by Joe Caiazzo, Justin Newton, Mike Knott, Earl Stanley, Kenny Kelly, Teddy Stathis, Brian Rocco, McLean Moore and Richie George. 3 on 3 By The Sea Set for September 22 Clare Droesch may have passed this past May, but her spirit lives on and so will the 3 on 3 By the Sea basketball tournament that she created. The fifth annual 3 on 3 By the Sea will take place on Saturday, September 22 at St. Francis de Sales. The event was started and organized by Rockaway icon and basketball legend, Clare Droesch, following her diagnosis with cancer. Droesch passed away this May after a courageous battle that beat the odds and predictions of her doctors for many years. Her family and friends will now honor her by continuing this great event. The day will begin with a youth clinic at 9 a.m. in the gym, before moving into the schoolyard for the competition. Play will begin at 10 a.m. with the Grammar School divisions followed by the High School divisions at noon. The Open divisions will then take to the blacktop at 2 p.m. The
event will include music by a D.J, and refreshments and apparel for sale. A post-event party is also being planned. The entry fee is $50/player and $10 for spectators. All proceeds will go to establish the Clare Droesch Memorial Scholarship Fund.
