Partial Eclipse of the Rock Rockaway got eclipsed on Monday. Many came out to watch this historic event unfold as 71 percent of the sun was eclipsed at the peak from the Rockaway viewpoint. Peninsula Library to Celebrate Summer with 31-Hour Festival By Katie McFadden

This weekend, the library will be open all night—and even on Sunday! Queens Library Peninsula Branch is celebrating straight through the weekend with a 31-Hour Summer Festival full of activities taking place from the beach to the boardwalk to the library itself. Peninsula Library, at 92-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, will open its doors at 10 a.m. as usual on Saturday, August 26. However, it won’t be closing at 5 p.m. like every other Saturday. They’re going straight through to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 27. That’s right, 31 hours to use the library for normal operations, like computer access and book borrowing, but that’s not all. Much more will be taking place in and around

the library, from games to movies, arts and crafts to yoga, concerts, mobile library access by the boardwalk and plenty of other activities for the whole family. The Corona library branch was the first to have a 31-Hour festival back in June, and it went so well that Queens Library decided to do it again and bring it to Rockaway. “Part of our goal is to make sure we find different ways to engage the community and have our libraries go beyond our walls. We felt it was extremely important to provide hours that are normally not available for people to enjoy it. We first did it at Corona and it was a huge success, so we said, let’s move it to Peninsula,” Queens Library President Dennis Walcott said. In aiming to expand beyond their walls, in addition to ex-

tended hours, the library is going mobile. On both Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a mobile library van on the plaza at Beach 94th Street and a pop-up library from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. right on the boardwalk. The van and pop-up library will allow people to check out books, get a library card, connect to the WiFi and will give the library more exposure beyond their walls and the ability to inform the public about the great activities taking place at Peninsula branch during the festival and regularly. “The van is a good way for us to promote these events on the boardwalk and to let people know to come to the library,” Peninsula branch manager Matthew Allison said. Some of the events taking place at the library itself in-

clude breakfast, knitting, a community resource fair, story time with the NYPD, painting, mason jar and kinetic sand projects, face painting, a teen Uno tournament, book jeopardy, origami, balloon twisting, workshops, trivia, tie-dye, skateboard building workshops, and more. On the beach, around Beach 94th Street, you’ll find story time, sunrise yoga, guided meditation and more. Forget Trinidad and Tobago or Brooklyn, NY — on Saturday, August 19, Rockaway outshined these popular destinations for Caribbean Carnival with a bacchanalia of more than 3,000 paraders and spectators coming from all over to see Carnival at its finest for the first time on Rockaway’s east end of the peninsula. The event was made possible by Senator James Sanders, Jr. and his hard-working team, in collaboration with the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, Rockaway Development & Revitalization decked out in costumes deCorporation and NYC Parks signed by Trinidad’s ultimate Department. With paraders mas man, Paul Singh; Rockaway’s Mermaid Brigade coming out to represent in their full regalia, entertainers, locals and visitors from far and near, and of course, Calypso King of The World, The Mighty Sparrow, serenading the crowd, Far Rockaway was

the place to be. Just ask Lisa George, Rockaway’s zumba queen and constituent liaison of Senator Sanders’ office who, with a team of 30 dedicated members, achieved a feat that ultimately turn out to be the fete of the year. “This was just a magical experience. Seeing so many

Far Rock Rezoning Plan Almost Final Back to the future? With approval from the NYC Council’s Zoning and Franchises Committee and a unanimous vote in favor by the Land Use Committee both made this past week, it looks like the rezoning of Downtown Far Rockaway is almost a reality, returning the downtrodden area back to its glory days as ‘The Ville’ with grandiose plans in place by Council Donovan Richards. With a 5-0 vote, the City Council’s subcommittee of Zoning and Franchises approved the Downtown Far Rockaway Redevelopment Project. The next step will be the full City Council vote scheduled for September. Approval is expected as it is with the next and final step: the Mayor’s desk. The zoning change is expected to spur a $288 million development, which will include construction of more than 3,000 residences, 250,000

square feet of commercial space, 86,000 square feet of community facility use and 30,000 square feet of open public space. Naturally, Richards is ecstatic. “This is a great day for Far Rock. It’s a sign of a new day, and I am excited about the prosperity everyone on the peninsula will be able to share with the beginning of a new Rockaway. Today, we begin the journey of building on the progress we have made over the past four years, by infusing hundreds of millions of dollars into infrastructure, quality jobs, parks, streetscape, transit improvements and both community facility and open space.” Richards, the chair of the subcommittee, said, “These

investments will ensure that Far Rockaway benefits from the amenities that so many other communities in the city enjoy.” City agencies working on the development plan include the New York City Department Housing Preservation and Development, New York City Department of Transportation and the New York City Economic Development Corporation. What about the height of the buildings that was clearly disputed by Community Board 14 (CB 14) members and other residents in the area? “I know CB 14 board members and others in the community expressed concerns about the height of the buildings on the plan, but people need housing and retail options in the area. You see similar buildings with commercial spaces on the ground floor and residential apartments in the stories above in Downtown Brooklyn, the Bronx and Harlem. Residents and oth-

ers living or just shopping in the area will have high quality places to shop, sidewalk cafes to visit and even parking options. I only made the tradeoff for the height of the buildings after considering the all-around community experience they will provide for everyone. ***** The City abruptly put the brakes on a bike share program and our local pols got some media mileage out of their protestations. But before we join in the outrage, we’d first chime in by saying Citi Bike (the City and Citibank sponsored bike sharing program) might deserve a few shots for being a monopoly and not serving some parts of the city, but we think asking a competitor to get permits isn’t so dastardly. And Spin, the new bike sharing program, would’ve benefitted mostly visitors (since so many people in Rockaway already have bikes). And some local businesses rent bikes now. A bike sharing company wouldn’t be so great for them. ***** The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and

A spokesperson for Hornblower tells us the boat, with a passenger capacity of 800, is NOT going to be used for Rockaway trips. In fact, the boat won’t be used for NYC Ferry at all. The official said: “It’s not a vessel that was designed to service NYC Ferry, and at the moment we don’t believe it can be effectively used on NYC Ferry routes. But as you know, we are continuing to use a number of other large capacity vessels to service NYC Ferry routes during times of high demand.”

***** See what does 30 percent sunlight do? It never got dark during Monday’s eclipse. We thought it might get 70 percent darker than usual! Oh, and we built a Do-It-Yourself eclipse viewer and, well, next time we’ll save the shoe box for another use! We would have gotten a D+ on a science project (A for effort). The next eclipse will occur in 2024. Save those eclipse glasses. We hear one dollar cheapos went for as much as $22 on eBay. ***** The NYC Economic Development Corporation took exception to our story about the saga of the Rockaway Courthouse and submitted a letter stating so. But here’s the basic story: in 2013, a developer was awarded the courthouse for $50,000 with a promise that a $10 million stateof-the-art medical center would be built. As of August 2017 there is no medical center, there is no main tenant. There are missed deadlines and no signs of progress. The building looks more like a tear down than ever.

The dollar figure attached – $288 million – is a huge number and the potential for a renaissance is real but we remain in the seeing-is-believing category. We won’t get overly excited until there’s actual ground breaking. The Courthouse. Arverne East. We get tired of applauding “plans.” What’s Arverne East? Oh, that’s from 2006, when developers were awarded the rights to Arverne East (81 acres of oceanfront property). Free Device to Help Businesses Stay Connected By Katie McFadden

Immediately following Hurricane Sandy, communications became limited when power and cell towers went out. In the event of another freak weather event, the company goTenna is hoping to reduce a lack of communication for small businesses and with the help of a city grant, they’re able to provide connectivity devices for free. Realizing the communication challenges after Sandy, Brooklyn siblings Daniela and Jorge Perdomo were inspired to create a solution. “We started goTenna in 2012, in part, due to our experience during Sandy when 25 percent of people lost service for days and weeks even after the storm, with one of the hardest hit areas being the Rockaways. It seemed silly that we have a communication network that fails when we need it most. This led us to investigate how we could help people create essential connectivity using the phones they already have on them, no

matter what’s happening,” Daniela Perdomo said. The Perdomo’s started to develop a device that pairs with cell phones and consists of an antenna, a rechargeable Lithium-polymer battery, micro-USB connector, and a flash memory that can store hundreds of messages. The goTenna devices are able to generate their own signals, allowing people to trade encrypted text messages with other goTenna users. They work regardless of whether a cell signal or WiFi is available. By March 2013, they had come up with a prototype and launched their first product available to consumers in summer 2014. In 2015, goTenna became one of 11 companies to win a RISE: NYC grant through the New York City Economic Development Company to help businesses become more prepared and resilient in the event of future extreme weather occurrences. With the grant going into effect this year, goTenna is able to distribute 20,0000 goTenna Mesh

devices to NYC small businesses impacted by Hurricane Sandy at absolutely no cost to the business. GoTenna Mesh is a device that enables text and GPS on your smartphone, while off the grid. GoTenna recently had crewmembers on the ground, canvassing the area to provide information about this product and opportunity. GoTenna Mesh is available to small businesses for free through RISE: NYC according to certain criteria. To receive the device, you must be a NYC small business as defined by the Small Business Administration and you were directly or indirectly affected by Sandy or were located in the FEMA-designated 100-year floodplain at the time of Sandy. This is not just about providing businesses connectivity, but providing essential communication among communities so you can allocate proper resources and emergency services more effectively,” Perdomo said. “We were inspired by Sandy to develop this product and hopefully we can help more than 20,000 people in the city have communication resiliency in the event of another Sandy.” GoTenna is also available to purchase for everyday consumers. Rockaway Unifies in Light of Violence in Charlottesville By Kami-Leigh Agard At a moving candlelight vigil, organized by the Rockaway Women for Progress (RWP), locals from all over the peninsula and Broad Channel packed into the Beach 94th Street plaza to show their solidarity for peace on Tuesday, August 22. The crowd — religious and political leaders, young people, seniors, families with kids, couples, people with their pups in tow, some holding signs and others even on their bikes, peacefully lined the boardwalk and filled the plaza — all united to mourn the victim who died when a man linked to a white-supremacist group rammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters at a "Unite the Right" rally last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia. Jean Belford, one of the organizers of RWP, opened the

rally by saying, “We come together in the spirit of solidarity and peace. In Rockaway, we are bound together by the sea, happy summers and shared tragedies such as 9/11, the plane crash and Hurricane Sandy. “We’re here tonight to be what we have been in the past, good neighbors. If Neo Nazis or KKK clansmen came to spew their hate on Rockaway or as my stepfather would say, ‘God’s little acre,’ we would be waiting with a shared message: Not here in our beloved Rockaway. We live in worrisome times, and there is no time for complacency. We are complicit, if we don’t react,” Belford said. After the National Anthem was beautifully sung by Sheila Cassidy, Fern Zagor spoke about her parents who were both Holocaust survivors, and the fighting spirit they embedded her in as a young to child

to always stand up for injustice. “My mother, after being beaten, left for dead in a concentration camp, swore that she would not let another holocaust happen again. After settling in the U.S., she joined the Women’s Strike for Peace and with other freedom fighting women like Coretta Scott King, attended the Peace Conference in Geneva, Switzerland in 1962. “The lessons I learned from my parents is that although there is evil, good will prevail, but you must fight for it,” Zagor said. Other speakers at the vigil included Wendell Wooten, who spoke about the need for society to accept each other’s cultural, ethnic, political and religious differences; Marva Kerwin gave the prayer and Josette Grippo led the call for action.

After the prayer, as dusk began to fall, Kerwin called on everyone to light their candles or light up their cell phones. “Shine your light, take pride in your community and understand that we are all connected,” Kerwin said. RWP is a growing group of over 400 politically like-minded women on the Rockaway peninsula. They formed after the 2016 election to develop and implement strategies that uphold democracy and protect human rights. They share information and engage in political action on issues pertaining to education, the environment, healthcare, immigration and other issues. Summer may be winding down, but the sun sure isn’t. Sunscreen is still essential for protecting yourself from those harmful rays and potential skin cancer. a brand new tool for Brightguard, which introduced the towers just a few weeks ago. After trying them out at events like a music festival in Arizona and then Summer Streets in Manhattan, where Brightguard co-founder and CEO Ryan Warren says the tower served 5,000 people within a fivehour period, going through the whole gallon of sunscreen inside the device. “People were flocking to it,” he said. With the success

of the temporary installations, Brightguard brought one to stay in Rockaway, making it the first permanently installed Sun Safety Station in the country. On Monday, Warren and co-founder and COO Alex Beck were on hand to talk more about the new device. “This is similar to the smaller dispensers we’ve had here, but we designed this bigger tower to be a beacon so that people could more easily recognize that there’s free sunscreen here, from a further distance away. You can easily walk by the smaller dispensers and not know what it is. This is unavoidable,” Beck said. Warren and Beck were inspired to start Brightguard after a wakeup call about skin cancer. “A friend of ours almost died from melanoma. He was only 24. He survived, but it was an eye-opening moment and we started talking about why we didn’t really use sunscreen and how it wasn’t that available. If you have to choose between buying food, beer or sunscreen, you’re going to buy food or beer first. So we had this

idea to make sunscreen more available and free so that more people would use it. Skin cancer is preventable. If you wear sunscreen, it reduces your chances. That’s why we’re here,” Warren explained. Brightguard dispensers can now be found in all 50 states and even Canada. The new Sun Safety Station will be in place until the last day the beaches are open, September 10, but it, along with additional towers, will be back for the summer 2018 season. “Our overall mission is to reduce skin cancer by 20 percent by 2025. It’s a bold goal and difficult to track, but we and the work we’ve done with Impact Melanoma has already been credited with reducing melanoma figures in the northeast. We’re already making a difference and we’re hoping that with the addition of these towers, more people will have access to sunscreen and will recognize this as a thing,” Beck said. On Wednesday, August 16, a massive boat pulled in to the Beach 108th ferry dock, which raised some questions of whether or not Rockaway was finally getting a bigger boat. Ferry operator Hornblower initially said they just got the 800-passenger boat and were testing it on ocean waters, but later shot down hopes of it becoming permanent. An official from Hornblower later said the boat would not be

used on Rockaway trips or as part of the NYC Ferry service at all. “It’s not a vessel that was designed to service NYC Ferry, and at the moment we don’t believe it can be effectively used on NYC Ferry routes. No Homeless Services FT TILDEN DRAFT PLAN ISSUED

The Redevelopment Act was passed in 1994 when it was determined that dispositions of large parcels of decommissioned federal land, including military bases, did not adequately address potential use of these properties for the homeless. This Act made it necessary for the Army Reserve section of Fort Tilden to be considered for new use for homeless services. The responsibility of determining such a use falls to the Fort Tilden Local Redevelopment Authority (FTLRA), which is spearheaded by the Queens Borough President’s office and community members. A draft for the redevelopment plan has been issued. In July 2016 a public notification was issued seeking “Notice of Interest” from any groups

or individuals, including homeless services. By the deadline, October 31, 2016 the FTLRA received just one response from the New York Police Department (NYPD) Counterterrorism Bureau. The proposal of the NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau “is to use the existing buildings and property of the facility as a classroom and situational training facility to carry out its evolving mission.” Further, the FTLRA, in consideration of the history of the site, the surrounding national park, the lack of readily available mass transportation, retail and other services, or educational facilities has determined that the 9.15-acre site is not suited for residential redevelopment or homeless assistance. DOH To Reduce Mosquito Issue In last week’s Rockaway Times, reporter Kami-Leigh Agard brought attention to the ongoing mosquito problem in Arverne. Just a few days later, on Monday, August 21, the NYC Department of Health announced that they would be using trucks to spray pesticide in the area to reduce the mosquito population and the spread of West Nile Virus. The DOH announced they’d be spraying certain parts of Queens including parts of Arverne, Bayswater, Edgemere, Far Rockaway and Somerville between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. starting Thursday, August 24. The boundaries include “Bordered by Amstel Boulevard and Beach 73rdStreet to the West; Jamaica Bay to the North; Hassock Street, Beach Channel Drive, Redfern Avenue, Virginia

Street, Central Avenue, Virginia Street, Elvira Avenue, Reads Lane, Jarvis Court and Beach 6th Street to the East; and Seagirt Boulevard and Rockaway Freeway to the South.” See the accompanying map for the boundaries. Although the DOH says pesticide poses no significant risk to human health, it is recommended to stay indoors during spraying times.

EDC Responds To The Editor: The article entitled “Courthouse Curveball” in the August 10, 2017 issue of The Rockaway Times contained several misleading statements that warrant correction. The original intent behind redeveloping the former Rockaway Courthouse was to address several quality of life needs for residents of the Rockaways after Hurricane Sandy and the closure of Peninsula Hospital. New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) issued a Request for Expressions of Interest in 2012 to test the market for this historic site. In 2013, with support from local

THURSDAY, AUGUST 24, 2017 elected officials and the Rockaway Task Force, EDC selected The Harmony Group to provide much needed medical uses to the community and that land sale closed in 2015. The Borough Board, consisting of the local councilmember and community board chairman, unanimously supported this selection. As the emails you cited show, after Harmony Group lost its anchor tenant, the developer proposed a number of alternate development options to EDC, one of which included a daycare. As is our standard practice, EDC consulted with key stakeholders on the local Community Board. EDC ultimately expressed to the developer that their proposed alternatives were not desirable for the project and those plans did not advance. We hope this serves to clarify recent coverage on this project. Either way, the situation is untenable and needs to be corrected. Landlubber Reporting In

The next six to eight weeks represent the heart of the 2017 Atlantic Basin hurricane season and the likelihood of tropical storm and hurricane formation will increase. Now is the time when storms are more likely to form off the central and eastern Atlantic Ocean, giving them plenty of time to feast on what’s now bathtub-warm water as they move thousands of miles

towards the North American coast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently updated its 2017 hurricane projections noting that wind and air patterns in the area of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean where many storms develop are very conducive to an above-normal season. As all of us here in the Channel are acutely aware of our community's true vulnerabilities to these storms and their accompanying storm surges, it goes without saying that it is imperative that each of us stays aware of any and all storm forecasts between now and the end of this hurricane season. This past Saturday I was supposed to be accompanying several intrepid seafarers from

Broad Channel out to Montauk where we had planned to meet up with the local "Captain Quint" aboard his charter (The Orca?) for some shark fishing. Our conversations were always peppered with the possibility of catching the big one, a Great White, and then all of us would stand around the dock in our Rockaway Times T-shirts with the huge beast hung by its tail behind us. Now I don't know about the rest of you but I see absolutely no reason why I would go out of my way to drive miles out to the end of Long Island and then get on a boat, head out into the ocean, and start looking for a big fish that could make a meal out of me in one bite. Keeping that in mind, I didn't see any need to tell my broth-

er fishermen that my closest encounter with a shark was a one-foot sand shark I accidentally stepped on off the beach in shallow water some years ago which found me screaming like a maniac, splashing crazily back towards the beach in a panic. A lifeguard ran over to me to check and make sure I was okay stating that he couldn't understand how a six-foot man could be having difficulty in a foot of water. Obviously, the well-intentioned lifeguard was not a Jaws aficionado. Needless to say, my fears were unfounded because as the weekend trip approached we were all reminded of the sage words of Robert Burns from his poem "To a Mouse," where he states that the best laid plans of mice and men

often go awry. Circumstances quickly spiraled out of control and ultimately the trip had to be cancelled. In an effort to salvage what we could of the weekend, I suggested that we all head up to the VFW on Saturday and sit around a picnic table in the yard armed with fishing rods wearing waders and caps festooned with lures while drinking cold beer and watching "Jaws" on a computer tablet with the caveat that each time the shark made its presence known during the movie we would all jump up from the table and yell in unison, "We're gonna need a bigger boat!" I can see you all snickering out there… laugh all you want but the last time I checked there were no sharks in the VFW yard! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

From The JBRPC A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP SUPPORTING ROCKAWAY PARKS By Alex Zablocki

The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) was established in 2013 as a public-private partnership dedicated to improving the 10,000 acres of public parkland throughout Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway peninsula for local residents and visitors alike. With its partners at the National Park Service and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, JBRPC works to expand public access; increase recreational and educational opportunities; foster citizen stewardship and volunteerism; preserve and restore natural areas, including wetland and wildlife habitat; enhance cultural resources; and ensure the long-term sustainability of parklands. You may have seen us working in the community over the years. JBRPC has worked with

government agencies and local organizations to bring improvements and programming to places like Fort Tilden, Riis Park, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Rockaway beaches. Most recently our organization privately funded improvements to Bayswater Park and we are currently working with partner organizations to improve parkland at Beach 88th Street. While our presence in the Rockaway community is not new, there are longstanding organizations doing great work to improve parks and open spaces here in Rockaway. JBRPC seeks to partner with these groups and complement their work, not duplicate it, and support the local community by filling gaps where needed. We work closely with the American Littoral Society, Rockaway Artists Alliance and other groups to help fulfill our mission. This year

we opened an office on Beach 116th Street and welcome visitors to come learn about our work and let us know how we can support parks in our community. Get to know our parks. Did you know that Fort Tilden, which is owned and managed by the National Park Service, was established as a military base in 1917? It was intended to fortify the Rockaway peninsula from naval attacks during World War I and remained an active base during World War II and the Cold War. Both anti-aircraft guns and Nike Missiles were placed at Fort Tilden to protect from aerial attacks. One of the batteries, Battery Harris East, can be accessed by the public by following the trail along Range Road. Visitors may ascend the staircase to the top of the battery to experience breathtaking 360-degree views of the Rockaways, Jamaica Bay,

Testosterone Tests Reveal…. A few months ago two articles were printed in a prominent medical journal regarding the use of testosterone supplements in older men. Testosterone levels in men decrease naturally over time. A low testosterone level may cause not just sexual dysfunction but also tiredness, weakness, and muscle wasting. Testosterone replacement therapy can be given to men either by injection or by using a gel that is applied to the skin. There have been a number of studies done on the harms and benefits of testosterone replacement therapy in older men and the results have been both variable and conflicting. Both of the studies that I am referring to were done at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In the first study the authors tested the theory that testosterone treatment in older men slows the progression of heart disease. The study group consisted of men age 65 and older who had both low testosterone levels and symptoms consistent with a low testosterone level. To assess heart disease, they used CT scans, which measured the amount of coronary artery plaque. Plaque is the term for fatty deposits that line the inside of blood vessels causing them to narrow. The study participants were divided into two groups. One group received testosterone gel and the other group, a placebo gel. The participants were followed for one year. The findings of the study were actually the opposite of the theory they were looking to confirm. They found that coronary plaque volume in the

group that received testosterone increased significantly as opposed to the control group. While coronary artery plaque volume does not in and of itself confirm heart disease, there is a strong correlation between the two. The second study was done by the same authors of the first study. Most cognitive (thinking, memory, attentiveness, etc.) functions decline with age. Some prior studies have suggested that testosterone treatment may slow or reverse that natural decline in brain function. In this study, a different group of men age 65 and over with low testosterone levels and symptoms consistent with low levels were divided into two groups, with one group using testosterone gel and one group placebo. This group was also followed for one year. Cognitive function was assessed with standard tests of visual memory, executive function, and spatial ability. The authors found that testosterone treatment was not associated with improved memory or cognitive functions. Both study groups were relatively small and participants were only followed for a year so both study results should not be taken as gospel. More research is obviously needed. It is becoming clear however that the use of testosterone supplements does have potentially serious side effects including possibly prostate cancer and heart disease and the use of these supplements should be carefully considered and monitored. I want to preface this article by saying that I am certainly not an expert on the topic of â&#x20AC;&#x153;griefâ&#x20AC;? but I do have some thoughts that I would like to share on that subject. I can assure you that this is not going to be a depressing article about death. Dealing with death and dying and its after effect of grief are a fact of life and for me it helps to talk about it, laugh about it, cry about it and apparently write about it. After recently losing three people dear to me within six weeks starting the beginning of June, there are some things about grief and grieving that have become very clear to me. One of the first things I have recognized is that not only is it ok to grieve, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very necessary and is actually part of the gift (strange as it may seem) that we receive when we love deeply. What I saw so clearly in deal-

ing with these recent losses is that I actually wanted to feel the grief! Feeling the grief helped me to feel connected to the person/ people who had recently passed away. What I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want was for one of my truly well-meaning family members or friends to try to â&#x20AC;&#x153;snap me out of itâ&#x20AC;? by saying things like â&#x20AC;&#x153;well, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in heaven nowâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see her againâ&#x20AC;? or any other positive slogan that is supposed to help fix the sadness and make you feel better. It is actually more interruptive of the process of grieving for me when someone tries to â&#x20AC;&#x153;snap me out of it.â&#x20AC;? What I found/find most helpful is the person who can sit with you in your sadness and grief. A good listener, someone who can be there with you, allowing you to express what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re feeling without telling you that you need to be feeling something else. Continued from Page 28 it beautifully: “the only cure for grief is to grieve.” In living 60 years on this planet I have seen many different sides of death and dying. My experiences have caused me to contemplate many of the big unanswered questions about life: Why are we here? Where do we go when we die? Will we see one another again? Another gift I have received from losing people dear to me, is that no matter what our beliefs may be in regard to what happens to us when we die, it is living life to the fullest now that is the best thing we can do while we are here. The thought, “don’t waste one minute of this life,” is something that is always going through my head at this point in time. On the other hand, there is also the process of grieving we go through when we are forced to learn to live without someone we love. How do we balance what seem to be two opposing thoughts? “I am sad, heartbroken and distraught,” on the other

hand “live life to the fullest and try to enjoy every moment you can.” Here’s what I find interesting, they are not opposing thoughts and grieving is part of “living life to the fullest,” but I also think we need to be aware of when “good grief” becomes “GOOD GRIEF!” It’s different for each of us, and of course it most certainly depends on just who that person is that we have lost as to how deeply we grieve and how long that grieving continues before we can let go. Let me end with a poem that was written by one of the dear friends that I lost this past July. He had written this for me when I lost my father suddenly, almost 25 years ago. I’m not quite sure I understood it then when I was thirty-five, but these days I think of its sentiment often and I understand what he was trying to say. “Like the brief life of a butterfly fills the world with its beauty, we must fill the small space of life we have surrounded by wonderful things, and only allow the grief to be as short as can be.” - Joseph Salerno

Saucedo’s exhibit at RAA will commemorate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. The kidsmART after-school program will resume at PS/MS114, Big City Folk will return in October and painting and printmaking press studio classes will continue for adults. Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

The Power of Sangha On Your Health Last Thursday, mid-morning, I was blindsided with an unexpected attack. An attack so ferocious that it left me in a fetal position screaming, begging for help to relieve my pain, even screeching for the Grim Reaper to end it all. Who would believe that just a few hours earlier, I was doing the “happy dance?” After a hectic week, I felt accomplished, ready to embrace all the exciting activities ahead for the weekend. Then a mere couple hours later, here I was in a hospital bed, attached to an IV, sewn down by pain and unable to move. I started cursing the universe, “Why the #$&@! now?!!!” After hours of reflection, the real question that dawned was “Who’s fault?” The answer, admittedly, “Mea culpa.” As if I was in mass, I kept beating my chest, whispering, “mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa.” My mind traveled, and I recalled that first day this summer, when I invited Christine Dydzuhn, a member of the Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support, to a class at The Rockaway Sangha, hosted by local resident, Dr. Nancy Gahles, a holistic doctor, chiropractor and integrative healthcare expert. After reading my column, Dr. Gahles reached out and generously invited me and a group member to experience her class, Spirit of Love~The Rockaway Sangha. On our drive to the class, Christine was talking about how she was listening to these YouTube videos by Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese monk known worldwide for his

teachings on mindfulness and peace. When we arrived, we both gasped at the beautifully tranquil environment where folks had already gathered. A world apart from my mom’s home, where I had just left with the television blaring yet another Jimmy Swaggart church service. As Dr. Gahles lightly instructed us to breathe and stay still and be mindful with our thoughts, I found myself in fright and flight mode. So… no athletic body twisting yoga movements, where I get to showcase my double-jointed prowess? I have to be still? That’s like asking a humming bird to stop flapping its wings! I found myself twitching, big toes interlocked, feeling like a thousand mosquitoes had just descended on me, mind like a highway, thinking about everything else, BUT being mindful. As people shared, I cringed, not knowing what to say when my turn was

Christine shared about wanting to be mindful and start caring holistically for herself, so she could be sure that she will be physically, mentally and spiritually healthy and present for her children, including her son, who is on the autism spectrum. I felt like a fish out of water. Prior to this experience, all I ever thought about was doing as much as I can with the time I have left to make sure my daughter has everything she needs to be the best she can be, despite the challenges of autism. I thought if I helped my daughter and others, my work was done. I never once thought of being healthy to be there for her in the future. In fact, I put all my health needs on the back burner, living recklessly despite my own health woes. Talk about an eye-opener. After the class, with Christine, looking as blissfully radiant as a flower in bloom, and me like a dried-up cactus in the Arizona desert, I asked Christine, why was it so useful for her to practice mindfulness as a caregiver. She answered, “For us as caregivers, mindfulness and making sure to practice breathing exercises are important because they help to release the anxiety parents take in from the everyday care of our children. If we are not centered for our children, they will not feel our energies. If we practice mindfulness, we can be more present to what is going on around us. There is more energy in our lives than the ‘typical’ family, so we have to release the unwanted energies not only for our children, but for our own well-being.”

People often ask me – Lazer, where do you come up with this stuff? Family members who know me well, realize that I had full access to all types of fairy tales prior to the Internet and Google. In fact, they would joke that I would make stuff up so much that they began calling my well researched answers: Loogle. Very funny, my family! But truth be told, I now have to more thoroughly research what I tell people, because they can immediately fact check the veracity of my statements. This has led to some uninspired storytelling on my part, because the stuff has to be mainly true now. Of course, I would never fabricate any of the stories that I have passed on to you through these columns. There are mermaids, and they do hide Oreos, and the damn Scungilli is disappearing as we speak. These things are all true. And the stories about Manhattan are all true too. Now I try not to just write what others have written about so I do try to give the narrative a different flavor, a Rockaway twist as one might say. And I do try to keep it as impersonal as possible, but it is true, you may recognize certain people by the descriptions that I insert from time to time. On the whole, I have been blessed by a friend who gave me an opportunity to grace this paper doing one of the things that I truly love, and at a time in my life when I could actually devote time to doing it: that is, creative writing. When I asked, “Well what do I write about?” The response was, you have 500 words on any topic you want. Most people

would have been daunted by such a wide net, but for me it was a license to let my imagination run wild. That also meant that I needed to employ a “filter” to make sure the depths of my madness were not on full display each week. And happily, times being what they were, the mermaid happily accepted the position as Editor in Chief of the Lazer Speaks. Little did she realize this title would come with the wedding vows exchanged thirty-three years ago right here on the sandy shores of our blessed peninsula. I do enjoy a good walk though, and Manhattan provides a terrific backdrop for history. So, I pass on what I see. And being an avid bicycle rider, the beach provides a steady stream of information that passes by my eyes, and again, I simply report what I see. Now I am perhaps more optimistic than most, I do believe in the good side of people, and unless I am really tired, don’t get that cranky about things, despite what others may say and believe. And hopefully that comes through in these weekly missives that I get to share with you. Of course, by now you are probably wondering what is Lazer getting at? Why is he rambling so? Is he well? Has he had a life-altering yoga experience? Or has he simply gone mad? Well, the answer to these questions and the title of this essay, “What Next?” is this: I got nothing this week and have been deliberately wasting your time. But in doing so, hopefully brought a smile to your face, because all of the above is mostly true, and you can Loogle that!

Top 10 DIY Projects to Prepare for the Fall By Artie Wallace

With almost a month left of summer, who wants to think about the Fall? The DIYers doâ&#x20AC;Ś. I put together a list of 10 must do projects for The DIYers out there to prepare for the fall. These projects range on a skill level of one to 10 on The DIYer skill scale (with 10 being the most difficult) and should be on every homeownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s To Do list, not just The DIYers. I will be covering each of these projects in detail in future weekly articles. Top 10 projects: 1 - Check and/or change fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and CO2 detectors. In the fall months there is a

lot more use for candles, holiday lights, extension cords, etc. These are among the leading cause of fires in the fall and winter months. Skill level of 2 on The DIYer skill scale. 2- Clean your gutters. Gutters have a tendency to get clogged more in the fall and winter months. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and leak into your home causing damage to walls and ceilings. Skill level of 5 on The DIYer skill scale. 3- Check your HV, A/C and heating units. Though you may not be thinking of heating right now, the last thing you want to do is have your heat go off on a Saturday night when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 30 degrees.

Skill level of 8 to 10 on The DIYer skill scale. 4- Check your roof. Obviously roofs donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be replaced every year, but tared seams in flashing do have a tendency to need maintenance after the heat of summer. It is a good idea to check it every year and do minor maintenance before you have a problem. Skill level of 8 to 10 on The DIYer skill scale.

5- Flush your water heater. Most people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize that your water heater needs maintenance. Flushing your water heater annually is easy to do and can almost double the life of your water heater. Skill level of 3 on The DIYer skill scale. To be continued next week. BRICK AND MORTAR STILL A ROCKAWAY OPTION According to Lana Meli, Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) vice chair and entrepreneur behind Lana's Loft, Rockaway is unique. "Although trends say people are going online, Rockaway customers still like visiting retail stores.” Though online shopping is becoming the norm of how people make purchases, there is a backlash of consumers who want to do their shopping the old fashioned way. Fortunately, Rockaway has a diverse smattering of retail gems that allow shoppers access to high quality, one-of-a-kind products. Says Meli, “Most of my customers come up to me and say, ‘we’re so glad you’re in the neighborhood!’” So what are our favorite places to shop for clothing in Rockaway? A traffic marker on the bike lane going across Shore Front Parkway (SFP) at Beach 105th Street proved to be more of a nuisance than helpful after a witness saw a bus hit the crossing signal while trying to avoid the tube while turning on to SFP. We reached out to the Department of Transportation to ask why the tube was placed there, will it be removed and when the crossing signal would be replaced, but did not get a response by press time. In the meantime, we advise long vehicles (buses, emergency vehicles, trucks) making the turn, to take caution.

Jamaica Bay Softball League SHARKS AND WOOD MEET IN FINAL AGAIN! By The Commissioner

Two Sundays ago our postseason got underway as we had both series go to a deciding third game. Moneyballs and Morning Wood had the week off for clinching 1st round byes. In the West Division on Field 1, the Kings took on the Mudsharks. The Sharks squeezed out a victory in Game 1, winning 9-7. A big error late in the game cost the Kings from taking a 1-0 series lead. They did bounce back though in Game 2, beating the Mudsharks 7-6. In Game 3 the Kings ran out of gas and Mudsharks took care of business and won 12-0 and advanced to the next round. Over in the East Division on Field 2, The Army and the Knights of Columbus squared off. The Knights broke the ice first, winning Game 1 in a high scoring

affair, 14-12. The Army rallied the troops and won Game 2 by a score of 12-8. Game 3 was another higher scoring game. KOC first took the lead but The Army charged back and advanced to the next round by winning,15-10. This past Sunday was our Division Finals match-ups. In the West, the first place Moneyballs took on the 3rd Place Mudsharks. The Mudsharks made a big statement win in Game 1 beating the Moneyballs by the mercy rule winning, 12-0. In Game 2, the Moneyballs finally got their first franchise run in the playoffs on the scoreboard but were only able to plate four runs on the board as the veteran Sharks put up an 11 spot and easily swept the series and advanced to the championship. the battle of the camo jerseys as first place Morning Wood took on second place The Army. MW made quick work of The Army in Game 1 as they won 10-4. Game 2 came down to the wire. In the bottom of the 7th, The Army had runners at 2nd and 3rd trailing by one run with two outs. Veteran move by the Wood as they decided to intentionally walk a man to load the bases. It paid off for Morning Wood as the next batter grounded into a fielder’s choice at second and they held on for a 7-6 victory and advanced to the finals. So this Sunday’s Championship will have Morning Wood taking on the Mudsharks for the third straight year. For Morning Wood it is their sixth straight year making it into the final and fifth time taking on the Mudsharks. The Mud-

sharks have the advantage in the finals winning three out of four. Last year it only took two games for Morning Wood to lift the trophy over the Sharks but the way these teams have been playing it should take all three games. First pitch is set for 10 a.m., and it should be a great day of games. We ask all fans and family to come and cheer on these two teams.
