On August 4, we published a story about a water rescue around Beach 134th Street of two teen boys on a paddleboard. It was a story of the teamwork used between a lifeguard and on- and off-duty firefighters who brought the boys back in safely. It was recently brought to our attention that a few names were left out of that rescue of people who deserve recognition. Amy Stein, the mother of one of the boys who was rescued on Saturday, July 30, says Greg Bender and Donny Powell were among the first folks to swim out to the 13 and 17-yearold boys who had drifted too far that day. They signaled for help and stayed with the boys while trying to get them back to shore, as more help arrived. “They were true heroes that day and they put their lives on the line to save my son and my nephew,” Stein said. “It’s just amazing to go out there and do what they did.” Way to go Greg and Donny!
The $5 million Beach 59th Street Playground renovation project was made possible with $2.94 million from the Office of the Borough President, and $2 million from City Council.
Beach 59th is finally getting a new playground.
“We are thrilled to break ground on this total renovation of Beach 59th Street playground, which will uplift the community and bring new recreation opportunities to the neighborhood,” said Commission er Dockett. “Thanks to our Borough President and City Council, and with input from the community, this new playground will serve as a focal point for play, exploration, and fun for decades to come.” The project will reconstruct the children’s play area to include new play equipment, safety surface, a new spray play area, drinking foun tain, benches, game tables, security lighting and plantings. The reno vated playground will also feature swings for both young and older children, a new shade structure providing much needed shade for parents, caregivers and other park visitors, and a new accessible ramp at the Beach 60th Street entrance. The playground design will feature imprints of fish and sea creatures stamped into the concrete pave ment, offering opportunities for discovery and amusement.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says traffic fatalities are rising, with 7% more fatalities in 2022 than for the same period of time in 2021. And that’s the biggest increase from year to year since 2002. (And buckle up. New York is up 37%!). The over all death rate has jumped near ly 20% from prepandemic levels. Many experts say the pandemic is a big factor because alcohol and drug abuse soared as did mental health crises for many. These fac tors contributed to speeding and reckless driving. No such surge has occurred in Europe. There’s no clear answer and Vision Zero has a very mixed report card. Accord ing to Streetsblog.org, “Selvena Brooks-Powers has the most-dan gerous roads in town. Eleven peo ple were killed last year in her Dis trict 31.” If your photo was a Top 30 in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest or received an Honorable Mention (and was posted at the ferry dock) your photo is waiting to be picked up at The Rockaway Times office. BrittAlso, said.bring your appetite as there will be a variety of food vendors tantalizing attendees with a cornucopia of cuisine from all over the Caribbean.
The festivities kick off at 11 a.m. and go ‘til dark. In addition to the beach party and live music concert, for the first time, the day’s festivities will also include a sandcastle building contest from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and fireworks display at sundown, both on Beach 17th Street. The Carnival, returning after a three-year Covid induced pause, is presented in partnership Senator James Sanders Jr.; the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA); Rockaway Development Revitalization Corporation (RDRC); REMA4US; Beach 17th Concessionaire, DredSurfer Grill; NYC Parks Department; 101st Police Precinct; and the Queens Carnival Committee members. This year’s theme: “One Day—Many Ways To Have Fun!”
This Saturday, August 27, the Caribbean’s most festive street party is gearing up for a massive return to Rockaway—the 4th Annual Queens Caribbean Carnival (formerly the Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways). So, get ready and ‘wave yuh’ flag with the anticipated droves of feathered masqueraders, prancing off from Mott Avenue and Beach 21st Street, and winin’ down on the boardwalk at Beach 17th Street.
“I want to look back at this time 10 or even twenty years from now, and feel good that I was a part of pioneering and growing this event for all to enjoy in the community,” George shared. So, no need to travel outside of Rockaway for the ultimate Caribbean beach party. This Saturday, play mas right here in Rockaway!
“So yes, Rockaway, we own it, but this is for all of Queens, including our constituents in Rosedale, Springfield Gardens, Jamaica and other areas. And they are all coming out to show support. They’re going to be part of the masquerade, and vending; selling arts and crafts and food, as well representing various community-based organizations— all reflective of Caribbean culture.”
As for the name change from Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways to Queens Caribbean Carnival, Lisa George, Sen. Sanders’ office manager and constituent liaison, said that the Carnival was expanded to a celebration for the whole“Afterborough.listening to feedback both from Rockaway locals and constituents in other areas of Queens, we wanted people to know that this is a Carnival for all of Queens. Brooklyn has their Carnival, and now Queens has their own Carnival, and what better place to host it than on the beach in Rockaway.
For George, who has been one of driving forces of the Carnival from its beginnings, the event not only gives people a time to destress and embrace all facets of Caribbean culture, but also an opportunity to attract economic activity in the community.
Also, according to George, due to the anticipated number of people, estimated in the thousands, the Carnival Committee partnered with the Black Spectrum Theater to expand the stage. “The stage at Beach 17th is not equipped to handle the amount of electricity that will be required to produce all the entertainment. So, bringing in a bigger stage, production equipment and crew, shows that our Carnival is growing,” George said. This year’s Carnival headlines major music performers from the Caribbean including: soca artists, DJ Cheem known for the hit, “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes Ba Ba Ben" song); Beniton and General Grant; plus, chutney soca artist, Ajala. Also, on board entertaining the droves of Carnival lovers is HOT 97’s popular reggae/ dancehall deejays, Bobby Konders andLeadingJabba.the parade of masqueraders will be 10 floats, representing the English, Spanish and French-speaking Caribbean. For example, Far Rockaway’s founder of the NY Careers Training School, Nancy Martinez’s float will represent Latin Caribbean countries, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic; accompanied by DJs from Spanish radio station, La Mega 97.9 FM. In the Caribbean and South American countries such as Brazil, Carnival or “Carnaval” is celebrated before the commencement of the Lenten season. Historically it is known to be a season of festive abandonment extending from Christmas to Ash Wednesday. Today, it is celebrated with massive costumed parades and music, and has since spread all over the U.S., plus, Canada, England and other parts ofAccordingEurope. to Carnival Committee Entertainment Chair Veronica Britt, the event also gives costume designers an opportunity to showcase their artistic capabilities.“This year’s Carnival will feature costumes by designers, ENJ Productions, Miss Diane, plus Brooklyn-based Freaks Mas, who generously donated costumes to masqueraders. For those who still want to get a costume and join a band in the parade, it’s not too late. Registration for costumes is still open with ENJ Productions.
In a statement, Sanders’ office said, “Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world, and what better way to celebrate that diversity, especially in Rockaway, than with a family-friendly Caribbean Carnival that welcomes all people. Out of many, we are one. That’s the motto of Trinidad—‘Together we aspire, together we “Carnivalachieve.’aims to celebrate Caribbean arts and culture, while highlighting the hidden jewel that is the Rockaways. Sen. Sanders invites people of all nationalities from all over the city and beyond to join him for this event. There will be good food, good company. Come and make a friend. We are going to have a ball.”
“I want people to know that when you think of Carnival, don’t forget the economic development engine it drives to a community, and especially coming back after the pandemic, we need this. This gives us a reason to come out, celebrate life, and Caribbean culture.

But it was a good time to write original music, including the song about Rockaway, which they wrote in January 2021. But soon af ter things started to open back up again, Matthew and Jordan found themselves back on a plane to New York in November 2021, and again around St. Patrick’s Day, playing a big gig at the Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan with the Narrowbacks. And then they came back again this August. Why? “The weather,” Shivers joked. This latest trip, along with their friend and fellow singer Lauren Craig, was simply for a hol iday, but Two Degrees spent plen ty of time gigging, to throw mon ey back toward their vacation.

From local bars to beach parties, Two De grees has quickly found their niche on the peninsula. “We didn’t even know this place existed when we came to New York, we just thought it was the City. We love Rockaway,” Shivers said. And they’ve quickly made many friends along the way, especial ly with people in the local bar and restaurant industry from Bob John son to Conor Skeffington, who they call their American manager, Ber nadette McCann of Harbor Light, Matthew Knott of Jamesons, John McCann of the Belle Harbor Yacht Club and the Walsh family who often puts them up when they vis it Rockaway. And they’ve created unique memories. From trying their first Nutcracker at a beach party to an accident at a show in Jamesons that left Jordan with a broken front tooth after an enthu siastic fan fell into his mic. But it made for a good reason to put up a tip jar at future shows to pay for his dentist

“Every penny we made, between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., we were giving it to the bartender,” Mullin said. But they also took some time out for charitable causes. On August 8, the lads took to the back deck of the Yacht Club to perform at the Fundraiser for Timmy Klein. For Two Degrees, it was an emo tional gig in memory of the fire fighter that they had met on one of their Rockaway trips, but it was also one of their favorites. “That was the closest I came to crying at a show. We knew Timmy. He was a nice guy, and it was a happy day, but still sad,” Shivers said. “That fundraiser was probably one of the best gigs we’ve ever done,” Mullin said. “It was a good crowd, and they raised a lot of money.”
“All I know, is I’m right where I wanna be, sitting here, sitting on Rockaway Beach. Baby just you and me. I think that I need one more day in Rockaway.” It’s lyrics to a song two lads from Ireland penned while sitting home in the middle of the Covid pandemic, looking back at photos and videos from some of their trips to the little beach town across the pond in New York. And it’s a song they’ve been thrilling crowds with all summer in Rocka way. Two Degrees is now on a plane back to Ireland, but they’ve found a home in this town that has wel comed them with open arms. Matthew Mullin, of County Ty rone, and Jordan Shivers of Derry met each other during a night out for Mullin’s 22nd birthday four years ago and bonded over music. It wasn’t long before they met up again for practices, and got hooked on performing after their first gig. Shivers’ father gave them their name after Two Degrees Universi ty. “The rest is history,” Mullin said. It wasn’t long before the duo trav eled to the States on holiday and began to familiarize themselves with places like Boston, New York, and each other. “We really started to get to know another better and got to hate each other more,” Mul lin joked. Now the lads are spend ing a lot of time together, perform ing full time and with their unique sound and high energy, drawing in crowds wherever they go from bars to 3arena in Dublin, in front of a crowd of Whether8,500.inIreland or the States, Two Degrees seems to have a big following wherever they’re per forming, grabbing attention to ward their unique twists on pop ular cover songs that appeal to all ages, ranging from Bruce Spring steen to Elvis to Post Malone. Fans are often impressed by their stam ina on stage, as the duo is notori ous for playing 48-minutes straight without stopping. “We have to do covers to get recognized but of course we want people to sing our own music,” Shivers said. Since 2019, Two Degrees has written four original songs, which they released on their first EP “One Road” in May 2021. But there is one original song that folks have started to pick up on the lyrics for, at least, on the peninsula.
Mullin and Shivers boarded a plane back home on Tuesday, August 23 for a break. “We love Rockaway and New York, but as soon as we go home, we’re de toxing,” Mullin joked. But it won’t be long ‘til they’re back. They al ready have plans to return for a wedding in a few weeks and again in March for St. Patrick’s season.
“Another Day in Rockaway,” is al ready a tune that has crowds sing ing along, or at least, getting a kick out of some of the relatable lyrics as the lads play it around town. Two Degrees first landed in Rock away in 2019. On holiday in New York, they had one destination in mind, Keane’s Bar in Woodlawn in the Bronx, owned by Seamus Keane, lead singer of the Narrow backs. Not even knowing what Keane looked like, they walked into the bar, found the bartender to be the man they were looking for, and said they had nowhere to stay. Keane put them up, gave them a few gigs at his bar and put them in touch with Bob Johnson, a former Rockaway resident who owns the Cabana in Long Beach. That connection with Johnson led them to their first Rockaway gig—at the Rugby tent for Rockaway St. Pat rick’s Day with Shilelagh Law.
Plus, they’re working on getting an artist visa to make the back and forth travel process smoother. And in between, they’re working on their next EP, which they hope to release in December featur ing—“Another Day in Rockaway.” To their Rockaway fans, they say, “Thank you for being so welcoming and hopefully we can continue to come back for years to come and have a place in Rockaway.” For more info on Two Degrees, check out Twodegreesmusic.com
More than 550 parishioners of Blessed Trinity Parish attended the Mass on the beach celebrated by Bishop Robert Brennan on Monday, August 15, on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Mass featured the traditional blessing of the waters.
Blessings on the Beach
"I always used to tell people in Ohio that the two things I miss the most are my family and the ocean, and I was thrilled to be back around the beauty of the ocean in this late part of summer,” Bishop Robert Brennan said.Father Michael Gelfant, Pastor of Blessed Trinity Parish added, "This annual Mass is a long tradition to our Breezy Point community. To have the Bishop of the diocese come and celebrate the Mass and meet the people out on their beach was extra special for the life of the parish as for the attendees. It was a first." The parish of Blessed Trinity is comprised of three churches: St. Genevieve, St. Thomas More, and St. Edmund.

CC Jerk Box Will Rise From the Ashes
While on vacation, local res ident Blaine Campbell’s dream went up in flames, but like a phoenix rising from the ashes, he’s determined to bring it back. After a devastating fire destroyed his restaurant, CC Jerk Box two weeks ago, Campbell is on the path to Campbellrebuilding.wasin Jamaica with his family when he got a call he couldn’t have imagined. A cus tomer called on the morning of Wednesday, August 10, to let him know his restaurant, CC Jerk Box, a Jamaican cuisine spot in Edge mere, was on fire. Campbell’s family had closed up shop the Sunday before with no issue. Be ing so far away, Campbell doesn’t know how it started, and there was nothing he could do. But when he returned, he realized he had lost Campbell, everything.bornin Jamaica and raised in England, came to New York in 2000, where he’s lived ever since. With him he brought more than 25 years of experience making jerk chicken and other Jamaican delicacies, using au thentic spices and ingredients. Along with others, he decided to put his skills on the grill to work, making it his full-time job. But having different visions than his partner, he split ways and put his life savings into following his dream of starting CC Jerk Box as a family-run business. CC Jerk Box hit the local streets, quickly becoming a go-to as word spread about Campbell’s jerk chicken, seafood, pineapple bowls, sides like mac and cheese, fresh juices andAboutmore. two and a half years ago, Whitney Aycock of Whit’s End donated a flatbed to Blaine, allowing him to take his busi ness further. When it landed at the Almeda Club on Beach 72nd Street, it became even more pop ular, but by the next summer, Blaine had found a more exclu sive bayside location at 48-06 Norton Ave, allowing him to build up his business and create a trop ical oasis near the water. CC Jerk Box was on its second summer at theOnspot.August 10, that dream came crashing down when a fire de stroyed everything. Nobody was hurt in the fire and the cause is under investigation. Despite the devastating blow, Blaine says his story isn’t over. “I’m com ing back,” he said. “This is my dream. I’m not going to let a fire stop my dream, it’s still in side of me.” Blaine points to CC Jerk Box’s logo, coincidentally, a phoenix, as inspiration. “For me, that means I gotta rise again. Like a phoenix, I gotta rise from the ashes,” he said. And he’s already on his way. This week, Campbell started the cleanup process. But he’s go ing to need a lot of help. Family and friends have helped launch a GoFundMe to raise money for Campbell to rebuild and to help support the family in the mean time. With the help of donations of money and building materials, Campbell is ready to pick up the pieces and start over. “We will be back,” he said. And he’s thankful for the support. “Thank you to my Rockaway family,” Campbell said. ENVIRONMENTOR STUDENTS CONCLUDE SUMMER OF SCIENCE
Although the summer of research has concluded, the students’ work will continue to inform scientific progress and research on their areas of study. After the presentations, students discussed areas of further inquiry that their research projects could inform–from questions about octopus cognition, to marsh restoration practices, to dolphin migration patterns. Three students, Sadiqah Quadery, Tayeb Abu Jazar, and Shahir Bey, went beyond the scope of their project on sea turtle strandings to complete a draft of a research paper, which they hope to publish in an academic journal soon.
CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, Baruch College, SUNY Plattsburgh, Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Rockefeller University, and Gotham Whale were among the institutions and organizations that helped host the student projects and provide resources, labs, and other support.
The program also depended on the constant support of the mentors and their institutions. Scientists Allie DePerte, Eric Angel Ramos, Kristi Ashley Collom, Chester Zarnoff, Mary Alldred, and Kendra Kreuger worked directly with students, guiding them through the scientific process and supporting their research.
The research presentations at RISE were attended by community members, parents, and students from RISE’s Shore Corps program. New York City Councilmember Selvena Brooks-Powers, State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., and Assemblymember Khaleel Anderson congratulated the students on their hard work and spoke to the public about the environmental concerns facing the Rockaways and the importance of continued youth engagement with those issues.
at RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) wrapped up their summers of research last week with presentations at the American Museum of Natural History on Monday and at RISE on Thursday. The student presentations capped off a summer of hard work in the field and in labs across the city, working on projects ranging in subjects such as sea turtle strandings, octopus behavior, saltmarsh restoration, dolphin morphology, and more. Throughout the Environmentor program, six student groups worked closely with mentors to identify and pursue a course of independent research. Their workdays varied, from field research on remote marsh islands in Jamaica Bay, to days spent in a lab carefully observing the movements and behaviors of octopuses, to research expeditions on a whale-watching vessel in the New York Bight.

The spring season has been generally good for our real estate market. There has been action across the board in all price categories with an emphasis on the range below $1 million (approx). Prices have firmed up within the framework of recent comparable sales and in some cases are creeping higher. Inventory levels remain very low. Call me, Love, Robin. 718-490-9463

About six months ago I had a client who wanted to sell his house which needed a lot of work. The house had a lot of good features: location, lot size, house size. The inside was not presentable. I advised my client to fix the problems because he’d be able to get top dollar for the house after a renovation. He hired a cheap contactor who was slow in doing the renovation. I explained that it was important to get it fixed FAST. It was obvious that interest rates were going to increase imminently. There was a danger in “losing” the strong real estate market environment. As time progressed, he was losing the strong springtime market seasonality as well. When the job was finally done and I was able to list the house, the market had changed. Interest rates were much higher and business had slowed up. Ultimately, the house sold for less than it would have several months earlier. Market prices hadn’t declined, but market enthusiasm had vanished. If the client had listened to me and hired a more expensive/reliable construction man, then the house would have been sold months earlier for more money than was ultimately achieved. You get what you pay for. Call me. Love, Robin.

The summer season has mixed effects on the Rockaway real estate market. On the one hand, we are a beachfront community and the draw of the summer activities does bring people here for: beaches, swimming, cycling, running, surfing, organized teams for kids and adults (although the pandemic may crimp some of these this year; thankfully the “end” is in sight). On the other hand, some sellers are reluctant to sell during the summer because they enjoy the aforementioned activities and don’t want to give them up so fast! It can be harder to sell real estate during the summer due to vacations by buyers and sellers alike. Summer activities can also occupy people instead of allowing them to focus on the home sale process.

The Federal Trade Commission is the government’s consumer protec tion watchdog. Its authority includes enforcing the Children’s Online Pri vacy Protection Act, a law that aims to protect kids’ privacy online by regulating the collection of person al data for commercial purposes by web sites, including ed tech sites, that are targeted to children under 13 years of age. When a company fails to follow this law, the FTC can sue.Recently, the FTC issued a Policy Statement putting ed tech compa nies on notice that it will be keeping a close eye on them to make sure they comply with their obligations under COPPA. In the Statement, the FTC stated that it will “scrutinize compliance” with all aspects of the law.COPPA requires that ed tech web sites provide notice of their infor mation collection and use practices and obtain parental consent to the collection of children’s personal in formation. It also subjects ed tech providers to a prohibition against mandatory data collection, data use and retention prohibitions, and im poses security requirements.
To be in compliance ed tech pro viders must not condition partici pation in any activity on a child dis closing more info than is reasonably necessary for the child to participate in the activity. In addition, ed tech companies are limited in how they can use the personal info they col lect from children: ed tech compa nies that collect personal info pur suant to school authorization may not use the info for any commercial purpose unrelated to the provision of the school-requested online service. They also must not retain children’s personal data longer than reasona bly necessary to fulfill the purpose for which it was collected (such as for a speculative future use). Final ly, ed tech companies must have procedures in place to maintain the confidentiality, security, and integ rity of children’s personal informa tion.In the virtual schooling/remote learning context, information col lection and monitoring may occur for purposes beyond commercial surveillance: teachers view students’ online activity in real time, software blocks access to impermissible sites students try to visit, educators view inside students’ homes without family knowledge, student-teacher interactions are recorded, school-is sued devices are tracked, etc. Parents and guardians should be aware of all of their school’s ed tech and remote learning privacy practices. Parents and guardians should know that children do not have to give up their privacy by providing their personal information in ex change for doing their schoolwork or participating in remote learning. Commercial surveillance of children as the price for their education is not acceptable and the FTC will make sure that ed tech companies who act illegally will be taken to task. The natural wine movement seems to have taken the world by storm. Natural wine bars are popping up all over the country and these wines can be found on many restaurant wine lists these days. Natural wine can be polar izing, some people prefer their funky flavors and others shy away from the deviation and instead stick to the classics. While natu ral wine has gained popularity in the last few years, it is really the most ancient and traditional way to make wine. In the simplest of explanations, natural wine is wine made with no intervention and no additives, meaning noth ing is added and nothing is taken away.Much of the wine we drink is filtered, sweetened, or flavored in some way, natural wine is not. The use of pesticides and her bicides is prohibited in natu ral wines, but small amounts of sulfites, a preservative and stabi lizer, is acceptable. Natural wines sometimes look cloudy or have more sediment in the bottom of the bottle because it is never fil tered, allowing fragments of seeds and skins into the bottle. They can often be described as funky or ci der-y, but there are many elegant examples for those who prefer classic wines. There are also spar kling natural wines, often referred to as “pét-nat”, a nickname coined from the French term “pétillant naturel” meaning naturally spar kling. Pét-nats are bottled during initial fermentation, trapping car bon dioxide in the bottle and cre ating air Naturalbubbles.winesare typically pop ular among vegans and the rea son for this might surprise you. Egg whites are often used as a fil ter in wine-making; if you think about when you crack an egg and get a little shell in the egg, what happens? The piece of shell is difficult to fish out because it clings to the egg, it’s the same idea with filtration. Eggs whites attract all the little unwanted particles in wine and filter them out. While some win emakers do advertise their wines as vegan, many do not, so it can be sometimes impossible to dif ferentiate vegan vs. non-vegan wines. It can also be difficult to tell from looking at any wine label whether it is natural or not, usu ally it is best to rely on the som melier to find out which wines use natural wine-making in a restau rant or Naturalshop.wine is made all over the world, but some regions are more well-known for their natural wine-making methods than others. French wine lovers should look to the Loire, Jura, and southwest France for more natural se lections. Many natu ral wines come out of northern Italy, near Slovenia and most wines from Georgia are natural. Chile has the highest con centration of natural wine-mak ers in South America and Austria is a prime spot for finding great examples. Natural wine is often debated because of its lack of pre dictability; there is less control in natural wine-making, allowing for more variation among wines and sometimes faults in the wine. It can be a polarizing topic among wine lovers, but the natural wine world is one worth exploring, while unpredictable, they are wild, intense and never boring.

Taking Time Off
It’s been a beautiful summer with so many moments of awe and beauty. If you are lucky enough to take a mini vacation, you have re set your nervous system and are now ready for the coming Fall. We are blessed here in Rockaway to live by the ocean in a tightly knit community that supports one an other when things get tough. Many of you have suffered from loss and we continue to send our loving prayers your way. Healing takes time. Having seen much loss this past summer, we begin to treasure our moments together, knowing this is all we have at this time. Every year, my husband and I escape to Lake George for a few days. First, we stop at Saratoga to make our yearly donation at the track. It’s an amazing experience with so many people coming from all walks of life. I like to make bets based on the jockeys and of course the names of the horses. You win some and definitely lose more! But it’s fun to watch the horses. They are extraordinary animals with such strength and grace. Thoughts of how the horses are treated al ways goes through my mind. Are they treated with love and kind ness?Driving to the lake after the rac es brings us to a complete oppo site setting where there is quiet and peace. We always try to go to a small rustic hotel or resort on the lake and this year we got real ly lucky having a private balcony on the lake. We swam, kayaked, stand up paddled and then rest ed on the lounge chairs just look ing out at God’s art work. Moun tains surrounding the calm lake with nothing to do but bask in the beauty. Gratitude that year after year we spend some quality time by ourselves. Each year we say to one another, the kids would love it up here but then we are not sure if they would know how to live with out TV, Internet, phones, etc. Well, we actually did have good WiFi but it would be nice to be without electronic devices and be in na ture with one another. But I like my peace and quiet with just the two ofWeus. are grateful each year be cause we know this could be our last year. There are no guarantees in life and after a year of seeing so many people pass on, we have decided to live life to it’s fullest. I am realizing yoga is not my life but yoga has given me a brilliant life. It has taught me how to be mindful and present with each moment. The people in the yoga community are an amazing group of individuals who have become my best friends. We are blessed to have one another and know that yoga is a part of our lives but what is most important is our family and friends. May you choose to say Yes to this life. Travel, spend time with family, do what makes you happy. We have this one crazy life to live so my wish for you is to be happy, healthy and content. We do not need much to make us happy, we only need the intention to live life to its’ fullest.

Dear Enchantress, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm waking up and not wanting to get out of bed, I set up all the bells and whistles on my phone and my Alexa to get me up in the morning, and then I don't have a good day. I work re motely - so I don't have to be an ywhere, and I don't even have to check in on what time I wake up with a boss. But if I don't get up, I lay in bed and think about all the things that I need to do, and all the relationships that need my help. I keep thinking of "the early bird catches the worm" and then I have all this shame about being "lazy." HELP!?!?
Dear Lazy Lucy, Oh darling, I get you. I under stand, now for the first time I have found peace MOST days with morning experiences. SO! You have freedom in your morn ing schedule, and just to present that your freedom of getting up at whatever time you wish, and this is a problem with only you, that's a big, wonderful thing! You have no one to blame, and I want to congratulate you on that. I imagine you are a night owl. I do believe that each person has a natural internal clock. I also think that you can make your whole day and night work for you, if you are willing to examine and release beliefs that make you use the word "lazy" and the beliefs that make you feel like you're "do ing it wrong." My advice to you is to EXPERI MENT. Wake up what you would call early from your bed, and bring yourself to the couch, get as comfy as you want, but moving out of the bed will be different. Once you're on the couch, play a healthy audio, something by Abraham Hicks, Bob Proctor, Ram Dass or Louise Hay, and listen or fall asleep, and this part can make all the difference: get curious about what comes next? If you get on your couch, and you feel ener gy, perhaps have a yoga mat near by (or even put it out the night before) and see if you get on it and start stretching, perhaps have a journal out and see if you start writing, and also get curious if you fall back asleep on the couch, see that your body must still need sleep, AND let that be ok. We are cyclical beings, so I also want you to know our inner clocks change with the season, the moon and other non-controllable ele ments, so there are no absolutes. Do this experiment with Grace and tons of kindness and com passion for yourself.

Since time immemorial, upon finishing their training, physi cians have taken some sort of oath. Around 400 B.C. Hippocrates came out with what became known as the Hippocratic oath. By 1993 in the U.S., 98% of medical school graduates took an oath based on the Hippocratic prototype. Today, the physician’s oath has morphed into something that Hippocrates would never recognize. Woke cul ture and social justice have found their way into the oath. Hippo crates’s influential treatise begins, “I swear by Apollo the Healer, by Asclepius, by Hygieia, by Pana cea, and all the gods and goddess es, making them my witness, that I will carry out, according to my abilities and judgement, this oath and indenture". In polytheistic societies, the physician swore this oath before the gods, which meant by violating the oath the physician would, as it were, defile himself in front of the gods. The same is true for monotheistic societies, where the oath is sworn before God. In either case, violating the oath meant eternal damnation for the physician. Not something to trifle with. Today, any mention or trace of God is gone, much as it is in our society as a whole. What was the physician swear ing to do and not do? For starters, of course, do no harm. The Hippo cratic oath states, “I will not give a woman a pessary to cause abor tion.” This is because human life was considered sacred from con ception to death. A woman seek ing an abortion in ancient Rome or 10th century France would be out of luck, as would someone seeking euthanasia. Physicians swore to prolong life as long as possible and ease suffering. There was no wiggle room, nor room for interpretation or debate. A sworn oath to a higher power was a sacred duty. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that the physician’s oath began to change. The biggest break with the origi nal oath came in 1964 with a new, more humanistic version authored by Dr. Louis Lasagna, a dean at Tufts University. Gone were sever al key components of the original oath, including any invocation or mention of a deity. Also missing was the prohibition against abor tion. In their place were exhorta tions to exercise “warmth, sympa thy, and understanding” and to be willing to say “I know not” when stumped.Withthis new version the oath was radically, and irrevocably, changed. It now became a secular thing, beholden only to the physi cian’s conscience and powers of moral self-restraint. No God was to be overlooking the physician’s clin ical doings. The divine covenant was gone. Within three plus dec ades of Lasagna’s 1964 rewrite only one medical school in the U.S. was still using the original Hippocratic oath. At Harvard Medical School, each graduating class is invited to write their own oath. Graduates are called upon to “bear witness to historical injustices.” Hippocrates would not be pleased. If you would like to read various versions of the physician’s oath, in cluding Hippocrates version, go commentshtmwww.aapsonline.org/ethics/oaths.to:Pleasedirectquestionsandcomtoeditor@rockawaytimes.

Breeda loved working with her colleagues at Kings Highway Hospital in Brooklyn retiring at the age of 75. In July 1989 she suffered the loss of her daughter Maureen, a 1st Lt. in the 82nd Airborne Division from Aplastic Anemia. In February 1990, Breeda was widowed at 57 years of age after the loss of her husband Bill from congestive heart failure. After these years of darkness Kevin and Brian followed by Eileen and Breeda made a pilgrimage to Medjugorje which gave each of them a new lens on life.
Breeda attended the ordination of her son Kevin “Gabriel” to the priesthood in Subiaco Italy in 2000 and later returned to Rome when Brian received his doctorate in theology at the Angelicum. She lived her later years surrounded by her loving grandchildren John Paul, Kate, Billy and Danny who adored her and treated her like a queen. She was a granny to many and well-loved in Rumson, New Jersey where she lived with her daughter Eileen and her son in law John Burgess. She loved to attend her grandchildren's school plays, sports games and their sacraments. She lavished her grandchildren with affection and her gentle wisdom. Often singing Irish melodies and telling stories of growing up on the farm. Her deep abiding childlike faith was an abundant source of inner peace which was a comfort and an example to many. Breeda was a joyful prayer warrior and part of a Rumson Rosary group for twenty years which continues to bear fruit to this day.
Bridget “Breeda” Gillen was born on April 14, 1932, to Brigid and Daniel O’Connell, the fifth of six children in Glanmire, County Cork, Ireland. She grew up on Templesque farm with her siblings William, Helen, Mary, Patrick and Donal. Bridget immigrated to NYC from Cobh, Ireland on a transatlantic steamship in 1955. She was joined later by her brother Patrick and her best friend Patricia who married Patrick. William Gillen from Red Hook Brooklyn proposed to Breeda in 1962. They were married at Church of the Holy Family in the Bronx, and they honeymooned in a rose covered cottage in Nantucket. Their first home was a winterized bungalow in Breezy Point and later a house in Belle Harbor, New York where they raised their four children Maureen, Eileen, Kevin and Brian. Many Sunday dinners were shared with her brother Patrick's family. Although Breeda could not swim she loved the ocean and made sure all her children became strong swimmers. They all served as lifeguards in Rockaway Beach rescuing many lives over the years.

Directions: Drain artichokes, reserving marinade. Cut artichokes into strips, and place in a large bowl. Add pasta and roasted red peppers, smoked mozzarella cheese, baby spinach and green chiles, and gently toss. Stir together reserved artichoke marinade, mayonnaise, and Parmesan cheese, pine nuts and garlic and mix until well blended. Add to pasta mixture, stirring to combine. Cover and chill. Garnish, if desired.
*If you like your pasta wetter, use another ¼ cup of mayonnaise and ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese. I found it too moist.**1/2 pound smoked gouda or Cheddar may be substituted for smoked mozzarella, if desired.

Tom O'Neill is the top lifeguard in the country. Photo by Joel Gitelson.
By Katie BeforeMcFaddenRockaway’s City lifeguards held their unofficial lifeguard Olympics last week, Riis Park’s Federal Lifeguards were once again dominating in the National Lifeguard Championship, and Riis’ Tom O’Neill was declared the National Men’s Overall Winner, making him one of the top lifeguards in the country.FromAugust 10 through 13, lifeguards from across the U.S. went to Hermosa, California to compete in the 2022 Jersey Mike’s USLA National Championship. LA County Surf Life Saving Association took home the whole championship in the A Division, but Riis Park had a strong showing, earning second place in the B Division championship, behind Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue. However, Thomas O’Neill was the Men’s Overall Points Top Finisher, with 87.75 points, putting him first above two LA County lifeguards and making him the top lifeguard in the country. The title came, miraculously after O’Neill suffered a back injury earlier this year, which he recovered from through rehabilitation.Throughout the weekend, O’Neill had some big wins, coming in first in the Rescue Race and in the Surf Race, a swim around a 400-meter course. Riis Park’s Drew Modrov came in third in this event, and Riis’ Daniel Collins came in sixth out of 20 contestants. O’Neill also came in second place in the Ironman event, a 1,400-meter course that includes a swim leg, a board leg, a ski leg and a beach sprint finish. Peter Ebert came in ninth and Daniel Collins came in eleventh in the Ironman. O’Neill also came in second place in the Run-Swim-Run event, an event in which Modrov placed fifth and Collins placed seventh. Peter Ebert came in fifth in the Open Mens Board Race and fourth in the Open Mens Surf Ski race. Riis Park also came in second place in the Taplin Relay, involving one swimmer, one board paddler, one surfskier and one runner. That Riis team consisted of Drew Modrov, Kyle Cornish, Peter Ebert and Thomas O’Neill. A team of Ebert and O’Neill came in fourth in the Open Mens Board Rescue Race, an event which left O’Neill bloody by the end. A team of Collins, Ebert and O’Neill also came in fourth in the Mens Open Board Relay. In the women’s events, Riis Park’s Molly Finn’s team of other Mid Atlantic lifeguards came in twelfth out of 19 teams in the Open Women’s Taplin Relay. Finn also came in eighth place out of 12 teams in the Open Womens Board Rescue Race. When patrons visit Riis Park’s beach, they can know they’re under the watch of some of the best lifeguards in the country.

The fourth and final Question of the Week comes from Alaun H. in Arverne and he says, "My family hates that I watch wrestling, they say it's fake and why watch it but I tell them I enjoy it! Can you tell them to leave me alone!"
Lol! Ok, Alaun my friend I have to say you are not the only person that has faced this issue from family or friends or both. Listen, wrestling is a show and it's a show where you can suspend your disbelief and enjoy the characters and stories being performed. Keep watching wrestling, there is nothing wrong with it. Enjoy! Thank you for the great questions sent in and please keep on sending them to eavil183@yahoo.com Have a great weekend!
The first Question of the Week comes from William S. in Rockaway Park and he said, "There are rumors that the WWE will start to expand the NXT Brand from the UK to other countries. Do you have any information?" Yes William, I have heard that the NXT UK Brand will be shut down to be reopened as a new bigger brand and there are renewed talks of opening the NXT Brands in other countries. So, this is exciting news but again these are just talks. We will have to wait and see if further NXT Brands are opened throughout the world.

The second Question of the Week comes from David T. in South Ozone Park, and he said, "I read your column about Ric Flair’s last match and I also read a lot of negative comments on social media about the match but I liked the match overall. I feel people were too negative, sorry this is sort of a question/comment." Hey David, I totally understand and listen, I agree. I think way too many people went into this match with high expectations of seeing a late ‘90s Ric Flair. I feel he did his best at his current age and the fans should had viewed this as a nostalgic thing. But overall I found the match good and it gave Ric Flair his last match. Now, he should not do another one. As I feel it will hurt his overall career.
The third Question of the Week comes from Stephen C. in Rockaway Beach and he said, "I saw that Johnny Gargano made his return to the WWE at Monday Night RAW. Do you think they will use him properly this time around?" Good question Stephen, but the question is did they not use him properly before when he was in NXT? I have to say they did use him properly. He received and earned a big push while he was with the brand. He was incredibly popular but now that he is back and on RAW, I'm a little hesitant to say if he will be placed in productive story lines. I can only hope he does so again as he is very popular with the fans.
This week we will answer questions sent in by you, the fans!
