CALLS FOR REMOTE LEARNING OPTION With the rise of the Delta Variant making the COVID-19 pandemic more and more problematic as the start of the school year approaches, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. sent a letter to New York City Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter asking that a remote learning option be offered to students in the City’s public schools this fall. In his letter, Richards said, “It is my understanding there are many parents in Queens concerned the New York City Department of Education (DOE) does not have a remote option for DOE students to learn for the 2021-2022 new school year, especially in light of COVID-19 positivity numbers back on the rise. Having a remote option would be a prudent due to the current reality we are all unfortunately confronting. Queens has some of the most overcrowded schools in the five boroughs, and it is concerning how schools can safely reopen for in- person learning. With the latest rise of the Delta Variant, there are increased concerns about
children’s safety and risks of contracting the virus. According to your staff at the DOE, there have been 27,428 cumulative positive COVID-19 cases, including 14,793 students and 12,635 staff members as of August 18, 2021. It is widely known Queens has been the epicenter of the pandemic, and we in Queens are still heavily affected by the virus. We have to be cognizant of the fact that our children are dealing with very unusual circumstances and that this can have a lasting impact on them. We should be doing everything possible to make this challenging time less tumultuous, not just for the students but for their parents and caretakers as well. By the DOE concluding that no remote option is needed without actual parent engagement, I believe the sentiment sends the wrong message and potentially undermines the entire parent engagement process. Having a remote option is being pro-active and vital during this unprecedented time. In conclusion, I urge you to please provide an alternative or additional method to learning for students.

There will also be on-site merchandise sales and orders may be placed for delivery after the event is over. An after party for adults is scheduled at Jameson's following the completion of play. Sad History Of Gateway Dear Editor: I would like to respond to Paul King's letter in your "We Get Email" column regarding Gateway National Recreation Area. Paul is absolutely right in his diagnosis. First, as the area is known, it is called Gateway National Recreation Area and specifically not named a park, so you would think recreation would be their first thing. However, for way too long they have been pushing all the local recreation groups out of the park, the kids baseball and soccer, etc. Case in point is The Rocka-
way Music & Arts Council. We were the first group to use the park for a local event, long before the RAA or the Rockaway Theatre Company. Approximately thirty years ago, we approached Gateway to have a one-day Craft's Fair on a Sunday after Labor Day.. They were thrilled with the idea and worked with us to present a Craft Fair on their Parade Grounds. The festival was so successful (approximately 1 to 2 thousand people) that we eventually made it a two day event, a Saturday and Sunday and moved it over to the area in front of the Bathhouse where there were events for children, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, picture taking, a food court and the local garden clubs had a tent and there was an "antiques" table for those looking for something old. There were local artists selling their paintings and the craftspeople came from all over the country. This was strictly a crafts fair, no flea market items were allowed. There was free parking for everyone in the lot
since there was no charge after Labor Day. The only part of the event that involved Gateway was having the garbage picked up at the end of the day and we even went around and picked up items left on the grass. Additionally, their security drove through during the night as the vender tables were left there. RMAC additionally had our own security as well. By the Park's estimate 20 to 30 thousand people came to the Festival each year. We had our meetings with Gateway each year to formulate plans for the following year and things were going well even though they sometimes set meeting times and then cancelled them. However, the Festival continued for many years along with the Sunday Picnic Concerts and when the Rockaway Theatre Company came in we even presented Opening Night Parties when their shows opened. Things were just humming along until Gateway started coming up with ideas for us; one being for us to supply both the men's and ladies rooms

The Rockaway Times with toilet paper. After getting really mad, we all had a good laugh and many jokes. Another problem was the use of their property. At that time the area in front of the Bathhouse (the grass area) was City property and the walkways were National. We received permits from the city and used the grass area for our vendors and the walkways were used just for that, walking and everything went along smoothly. After the last year of the Festival when meeting with Gateway management, they came up with the idea that we should pay for use of the park the next year and their number was $14,000. We were willing to discuss the matter with them but after all was said and done, we felt we could not agree and that was the end of it. To this day, I still get questioned as to why and when the Festival may return but that won't be happening. Even the Bathhouse, where I had my first job as a teenager, Continued on page 7

WE GET EMAIL Continued from Page 6 handing out towels and keys to the lockers way back when has been destroyed by the government. They replaced the inside with offices, broke down the areas where the lockers were and just left it. That building would have been a great place for wedding and other events. It is big, had a beautiful floor and would only have needed a kitchen and some other renovations. It could have been rented out, with parking available, but they just left it and went to Floyd Bennett Field. The pictures in The Rockaway Times a couple of weeks ago, made me very sad and I
hope that someday things will change for the better. Sharon Gabriel Thanks, Jamos Dear Editor: I am writing to thank Jamesons Pub for their generous contribution to our NNO 2021 event. ***** Life is a bit sadder around here this week with the heartbreaking news that Patricia McFadden, mother of Katie McFadden, our Managing Editor, and a great supporter of The Rockaway Times herself, died this week. Arrangements are pending. ***** You know what they say, you don’t want to own a boat, you want a friend with a boat. If you’re short on such friends, you still have the option of renting a boat. And if you do, you can do worse than renting a pontoon boat out of Marina 59 in Arverne. The pontoon boat (the kind often seen on lakes) can fit 10 people and if you can drive a car, you can steer the boat. Summer’s almost over but there’s still enough time
to get out on the bay. Call 718945-4500 and definitely say you heard about the pontoon rental through The Rockaway Times. ***** A fun day of schoolyard basketball is set for tomorrow (Friday, August 27) at St. Francis de Sales on Beach 129th Street. The 3 on 3 By The Sea Tourney is in honor of the legendary, much-loved, much-missed Clare Droesch who died of cancer in 2018. ***** Well, Hurricane Henri gave us big waves and a nice drenching but, for a change, it seems Brooklyn and Manhattan got the local brunt and had bigger flooding problems than Rockaway. Central Park got eight inches of rain which, if that had been snow, would have been nine feet! ***** The 17th Annual Richie Allen Surf Memorial Classic will take place on Sunday, September 12 at Beach 91st Street. Richie, a firefighter, was killed on 9/11 and the surfing event keeps his memory alive and with so
many young people taking part it’s a great way for the next generation to connect to Richie and the ocean which he loved so much. ***** Queens Borough President Donovan Richards announced a free concert series – Queens Live – and it will kick off here in Rockaway on Saturday, August 28 from 3- 7 p.m. with Reggae on the Boardwalk at Beach 94th Street. After years of performances in Brooklyn and the Bronx, the August 28 concert will be the first Reggae on the Boardwalk event hosted in Queens. ***** NYPD Harbor Patrol stops at the dock behind The Rockaway Times building regularly as the crew looks to grab lunch at Rockaway Bagels. One of the cops told us that they’re busier than ever keeping out eye for sharks off Coney Island and Rockaway and they relay the information to Parks–which sometimes results in swimmers being told to get out of the water. The presence of sharks means there is plenty of food
(other fish) in the area and is another indication that the waters around the peninsula are cleaner than ever. ***** Felecia Singh stopped by The Rockaway Times office to say hello. The candidate for City Council is an Adelphi grad, a Peace Corps volunteer, and former teacher at a charter school in Brooklyn. And she was a Census worker, too, where she, no doubt, picked up some door knocking skills. She believes resilience (ocean and bay protection with community input and sewar upgrades, etc.) is an issue all Rockaway residents can support. She said she’ll have an office in Rockaway should she win the November election. The race against Republican Joann Ariola for the District 32 seat is expected to be among the most competitive in the city. ***** Sad news. Sally Imperato, a friend to many, and who wrote some great stuff for us, died Friday, August 20. She'll be greatly missed.

BUGALOU IS BACK!
On February 28, 2020 The THE BAND Band took the stage at St Camillus Springman Hall after an outstanding opening set by Real Young and Lazy Horse. Two hours later, the deeply satisfied audience filed out, not to return since. The initial outbreak of COVID-19 followed shortly after, and Bugalou has been on hiatus since, with multiple shows scheduled, rescheduled, and ultimately cancelled. Friday October 1 will mark Bugalou's return led by Real Young in the headliner's slot, preceded by Toronto musician Virgil Tinsley in 'A Night of Neil and Bob.' Tinsley will perform a 60-minute set of Bob Dylan classics before Real Young once again bring their energy to the catalog of Neil Young but in a stretched out set this time. Steve Forbert and the New Renditions are next on November 26, along with Gerald Bair, in Bugalou's Super Songwriter Showcase. Forbert arrived in NYC from Mississippi in 1977 and his debut album 'Alive on Arrival' was critically acclaimed by the Village Voice, Rolling Stone and many others. His follow up, 'Jackrabbit Slim,' yielded the hit 'Romeo's Tune,' which to most remains the most familiar song in an impressive body of work over 50 years. Gerald Bair will become the first performer to Bugalou three times as he begins the evening with his own favorites like 'Driving Out of Rockaway.' The sounds of Carlos Santana and the classic Santana band lineup come to life on
February 18, 2022 when Jingo comes to town. It will be a high energy performance that will have everyone grooving and dancing to 'Black Magic Woman," 'Evil Ways,' Soul Sacrifice,' and many others. Winston McBoogie returns for his 2nd Bugalou to start the night. Fools Night Out will finally make their Bugalou debut on April 22, 2022 after multiple COVID reschedules and ultimately cancellations. They will get the party started before Desert Highway presents their highly acclaimed Tribute to the Eagles, which was a highlight of the 2018-19 season. The season will close on July 1, 2022 with Bugalou's 'Welcome to Summer Party' featuring two bands who have forged great reputations with their performances in Rockaway during their annual visits. Two Degrees will arrive from Northern Ireland anxious to play for an audience that has not been able to see them in person for a long time due to COVID travel restrictions. Finnegan Blue flies in from San Diego for their annual visit back to their Rockaway roots, and anyone who caught them this summer will be sure not to miss this special night. A $150 full season pass, or a $100 3 show package can be purchased now by email to bugaloumusic@gmail. com. Tickets for individual shows will go on sale on 9/1 at www.bugaloumusic.com. Follow and like Bugalou on facebook at https://www. facebook.com/bugaloumusic and check out our daily posts to listen to and learn more about our 2021-22 performers as Bugalou brings nationally and regionally recognized performers to you without having to leave the peninsula. All shows this season will be at St Camillus Springman Hall. Moderately priced beverages and snacks will be available to purchase and enhance your evening. BUGALOU IS BACK! St. John’s Hosts Back To School Event On Friday, August 20, St. John’s Hospital hosted its 5th Annual Community Wellness and Back to School event in a new way. In past years, the hospital hosted a large community event with over 50 vendors, games and music. However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the community event was re-imagined for the second consecutive year. The pre-registered event provided 500 children with backpacks containing back to school supplies including hand sanitizers, face masks, pencils, notebooks, crayons, and other essential items. Parents and guardians were also able to schedule their child’s well visits hassle-free on-site. This yearly event has become a hospital and community staple in which families look forward to attending. Faced with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital was determined not to cancel the event, but to once again “reimagine” it instead. Taking into account proven safety stand-
ards, the hospital staggered attendance by asking the public to select specific time slots to pick-up their “Grab-And-Go” bags. This helped to ensure order and continue to maintain social distancing.
Renee Hastick-Motes, Vice President of External Affairs at St. John’s said, “While we’re still faced with these challenging times, we wanted to push forward and host this event for the benefit of the community, especially the chil-
dren. Back to school is always an exciting time for kids and we wanted to continue to be a part of that excitement. Healthcare is the best back to school supply." The hospital raised funds to
purchase the school supplies through the generous donations of hospital staff, community members, local organizations, and the St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Auxiliary. “In everything that we do, we always have the communi-
ty’s best interest at heart,” Jerry Walsh, Chief Executive Officer, said. “We were determined to continue our mission especially during these trying times. And, by seeing the smiles on the faces of families and children I believe that we were able to make a positive impact on their lives.” To schedule an appointment for your child with a St. John’s Medical Group pediatrician at 495 Beach 20th Street, Far Rockaway, NY, please call (347) 6195950.

Save the Earth Part III By Tom Last
On a recent trip to Portland, Oregon I saw and felt firsthand the effects of climate change. With temperatures above 100 degrees and no precipitation for months, Portland has taken on an apocalyptic appearance that includes brown grass, withered flowers, and people sheltering during the day to live a nocturnal lifestyle. Most residences in the Pacific Northwest do not have air conditioning, because in the past, they just did not need it. Now, the heat is dangerous for the people living in this area, because they have no way of avoiding the extreme temperatures. As the earth continues to heat up (think greenhouse gases) and ecological disasters persist around the globe, we encourage everyone to do their part to help lessen the effects of global climate change. Make no mistake about it, our world is changing rapidly, and

our future generations will pay a heavy price for our misuse of the environment. We here in the Rockaways have experienced the effects of climate change firsthand, as we have lived through Hurricane Sandy and continue to battle the increasing sea levels with temporary solutions such as jetty installments and
sand replenishment. Our current news reports depict the ongoing heat wave and severe drought out West that is causing major water ways (e.g. Lake Mead and the Colorado River) to dry up. The continued rising temperatures and related drought are adversely affecting the agriculture and fishing industries and creating
an overall environmental disaster that is disturbing the daily living conditions for many citizens that is equivalent to the effects experienced during the Dust Bowl era. See the simple policies/ strategies that we can follow, during the summer and throughout the year, to help our environment and reduce the effects of Climate Change: Replace your Air Filters – Replacing a dirty filter with a clean one can lower your air-conditioner’s energy use by 15%; Choose LED lightbulbs – LED bulbs are the most energy efficient lighting option currently available. They use 15% less energy, last 25 times higher and run much cooler than standard incandescent bulbs. Use your thermostat wisely – Set your thermostat as high as comfortable possible in the summer. Ideally 78 degrees F. Keep your house warmer when Continued on page 17

SPOTTED:
TWICE AS NICE
The Rockaway boardwalk is a beautiful place and even more so when you spot a team effort. There are too many people dressed like Lance Armstrong. If you want to stand out and look great, follow the lead of Marcel and Gracie - the two best dressed people on the boards, spotted a couple weeks back.

SAVE THE EARTH PART III Continued from Page 14 no one is home. Close your blinds – Close your blinds or drapes in the daytime to keep out the greenhouse effect of the sun. Southern and western facing walls take the brunt of the sun’s heat, so invest in good shades and drapes for the window on these walls and keep them closed at the hottest time of the day. Wash Strategically – Use cold water for your washing machine, clothes dryer and dishwashers. Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes. After washing clothes hang them up to dry. These measures will save a ton of heat. Plant a Tree – In addition to planting a tree on your own property there are plenty of organizations that will plant a tree for a fee. Check out ‘Plant a Billion Trees – The Nature Conservancy’ website and have a tree or sever-
THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 2021 al trees planted anywhere in the world for $50 per tree. Remember - trees provide food and oxygen and help combat climate change. Leave the car at home – Think about walking or biking to the store, church, or other local place. By reducing the # of weekend cars parked in an average parking lot by 50% we can reduce tons of CO2 emissions annually. In addition to combating climate change, walking and biking will improve your health and save you money. These are just a few easy steps we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint and slow the effects of climate change. I recommend that we all become advocates of sustainability to improve the conditions of our environment for the future. Please take the time to read more about climate change and what you can do to save the Earth. Let’s work together on the environment, to ensure a brighter future for our children and grandchildren.

1 1.99% APR (annual percentage rate) for the first year if you draw 10% or more of the loan at closing, or 2.24% APR for the first year if you draw less than 10% of the loan at closing, followed by a variable APR as low as Prime Rate. The introductory APR is fixed for one year (twelve months). After the first year, the APR is determined by Combined Loan to Value (CLTV) ratio. If CLTV is 65% or less, the rate is prime for a primary or vacation home, prime plus 0.25% for an investment property. If CLTV is greater than 65%, the rate is prime plus 0.25%. All rates can change monthly. The maximum APR is 10.99%. 2 The Prime APR is variable based on the U.S. Prime Rate as published in the Wall Street Journal, plus a margin (if applicable). The minimum floor APR is 3.25%. If CLTV is 65% or less, the rate is prime for a primary or vacation home, prime plus 0.25% for an investment property. HELOCs are variable rate products and rates may not exceed the maximum APR of 10.99%. The Prime Rate as of 6/01/2021 = 3.25%. Loan products and services subject to credit approval. The Can’t Deciders Some people just can’t decide. Usually, in the past, this issue has been found mostly among buyers. In some cases, there were people actually shopping for years. We don’t see too much of this anymore due to light inventories and the very strong market. Although, there are a few slow decision makers still floating around among buyers, too. Usually, they keep missing the houses which they are contemplating due to competing buyers who act fast-
er. The slow decision makers among buyers have mostly faded from the scene. Currently, the slow decision makers that we see exist among the sellers. Most often it’s exhibited during the negotiation process. The sellers hear news reports about the strength of the real estate market, and they are concerned about the possibility of selling their house too cheaply. After all, the house is worth more because it’s THEIRS! Therefore,

sometimes there is a reluctance to bargain regardless of the comps, the defects in the property, the length of time on the market, or the obviously high original listing price. Fortunately, such sellers are in the minority, or we wouldn’t get many deals done! When these sellers ultimately decide that they actually want to sell the property they usually accept reality and become more reasonable. Call me. Love, Robin v
July according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR) on August 23. Nationally, sales were up 2%, although sales in the Northeast during July were unchanged from June but up 12% from a year ago. The median price (middle most price, not the average price) was 411k in the Northeast which was up 23% from a year ago. The NAR chief economist stated that inventory levels are beginning to increase – but mainly in the higher end markets, and still well below the inventory levels of a year ago. There isn’t as much inventory growth in the mid and lower tier markets due to fewer starter homes available for sale. The July uptick in inventory levels is typical for this time of year. Nationally, it took approximately 17 days to sell a new listing in July, unchanged from June. Fresh Tuna Salad with Red Grapes and Toasted Walnuts Ingredients: 2 large fresh tuna steaks (about 1-1/2 pounds) 2 lemons, thinly sliced, plus ½ lemon, zested and juiced, as needed Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup fat free Greek yogurt (or less if you like it drier) ½ cup halved red grapes (or leave whole) ¼ cup toasted and chopped walnuts Directions: Preheat oven 350 degrees. Put a large sheet of parchment paper on a baking sheet. Arrange the lemon slices on the parchment, slightly overlapping, covering in an area just
The Rockaway Times larger than the size of the tuna steaks. Season the tuna well on both sides with salt and pepper and arrange them directly on the lemon slices. Sprinkle the lemon zest evenly over the tuna. Bring the 2 long sides of parchment together and fold down over the tuna; fold the end of the parchment and tuck them under the fish like an envelope. Roast in the oven until cooked through, about 30-40 minutes; the tuna should flake easily with a fork and is no longer pink in the center. Open the parchment paper and let the tuna cool until it can be handled, then flake it with a fork. Transfer to a serving bowl along with any cooking juices it has released. Add the yogurt, grapes and walnuts and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper and freshly squeezed lemon juice to taste. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready. ++ This healthy salad goes great on butter lettuce; on a slice of toasted whole wheat bread, with fresh cantaloupe slices. ++Also, if you can’t or don’t have time to use fresh tuna steaks, you can try this with canned white tuna.

Knowing the Song in your Heart Our heart is at the center of our being human. In the heart is where our deepest thoughts, intuitions, emotions and decisions find their source. We often fail to know our hidden centers and so we live and die without knowing who we really are. Have you ever looked into the mirror and asked yourself, “who am I?” You are not the body, you are not your mind, you are not your title such as wife, husband, mother, father, sister, brother, friend, etc. You are so much more. This past weekend I
picked up one my favorite books, “How, Then, Shall We Live.” By Wayne Muller. The first question he asked was, Who Am I? The past few months have given us all time to get to know ourselves and perhaps work on some positive changes in our life. The here and now is real. This moment in time will never come again. How can we, living in today’s society, find our quiet center, leading to the song in your heart? Is it possible in New York City to be relaxed and
calm? I think it is a challenge but most certainly possible. We live in one of the greatest cities although these days we have most definitely lost control of a peaceful society. Our struggles are real to find peace and calm. The only way I can find the calm amid the storm is to close my eyes to my surroundings. Focus on a mantra and my breath. Breathing in, I am calm, breathing out, I am peace. It works every time for me, so I repeat it often. Then I open my eyes to the beauty in front of me. If I were an artist, I would paint a picture; if I were a photographer, I would take a picture; if I am me, I would breathe it all in. My song is by the ocean. I have always gone to the water for comfort and peace. Water is healing and we are blessed to live in this special community. Yes, we are a beautiful, resilient community. So grateful for my parents bringing us to Rockaway Beach for summer vacations in the bungalows by 102nd Street. This summer many people
have visited Rockaway Beach and truly found a source of harmony in this chaotic world. What is your song? Are you afraid to be who you were meant to be? Is there something or someone holding you back? Finding your song is finding your love with yourself. You don’t have to change your life, you just have to be with yourself. You are perfect just the way you are. You are enough and your heart is your guide. The heart is a masterpiece. It has a subtle energy that vibrates loudly. We feel and hear the soft beat, but it is an instrument that plays our life’s song. Listen, feel and be with yourself. Mary Oliver, “Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Life is brief, even if we live to 100 years old, it goes fast. May you be happy, content and healthy. God has been very good to me, and I wish you the same.

Infertility
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Infertility, defined as the failure to achieve pregnancy after 12 months of regular unprotected sexual intercourse, affects 8.8% of US women aged 15 to 49 years, and is often associated with significant physical and emotional stress. Heterosexual women desiring pregnancy who have not conceived after 12 months of unprotected intercourse or donor insemination should undergo an infertility evaluation. Earlier evaluation is recommended for women older than 35 who have not conceived after 6 months, and a more immediate evaluation is warranted in women older than 40. Infertility is caused by identifiable abnormalities in normal physiology or underlying disease in 85% of infertile couples. The most common causes of infertility are ovulatory dysfunction, male factor
infertility, and tubal disease. The remaining 15% of infertile couples have “unexplained infertility”. A history of regular, cyclic menstrual cycles with premenstrual symptoms (e.g., breast tenderness, fluid retention) is sufficient to establish ovulation. According to the World Health Organization, ovulatory disorders account for 25% of infertility diagnoses. Anovulation should be suspected when periods occur irregularly, in cycles of under 21 days or longer than 35 days, or if the patient reports abnormal uterine bleeding or amenorrhea. Typically, ovulation occurs 14 days before menstruation. The most common cause of anovulation, accounting for 70% of cases, is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Obesity itself is also associated with anovulation, especially in women with a BMI greater than 27. Eating disorders are another cause of anovulation. Tubal disorders, where the fallopian tubes are either
blocked or incapable of picking up an oocyte from the ovary due to pelvic adhesions (scarring), account for between 11 and 67% of infertility diagnoses. Common causes are a history of sexually transmitted infections (the most common cause), history of abdominal surgery, or a previous abdominal infection (e.g., ruptured appendix). Endometriosis, which is the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterine cavity, accounts for 25 to 40% of women with infertility. Another factor is a loss of ovarian reserve, which occurs normally with age. There are also assorted uterine and cervical factors associated with infertility. Last, but not least, are disorders of male physiology, such as low testosterone levels and low sperm counts. Most wives usually blame everything on their husbands but, sorry ladies, male disorders account for only 35% of infertile couples. But, in reality, most infertile couples will have
more than one reason for their infertility, which is why evaluation for male factor infertility is performed simultaneously with the woman’s evaluation. Treatments for infertility include medication to induce ovulation or stimulate the ovaries, the goal being to induce multiple mature ovarian follicles. Timed intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be tried to achieve fertilization at the time of ovulation. Alternatively, mature oocytes may be retrieved directly from the ovary for fertilization using an ultrasound guided needle (IVF). Approximately 1 in 8 women aged 15 to 49 receive infertility services. Although success rates differ by age and diagnosis, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment can allow many couples treated for infertility to achieve their goals of becoming pregnant and having a family. The Empty Nest Dear Enchantress, I'm kind of an emotional mess right now. I have two kids that are off to college, one we just dropped off and one is going this week. We, are my husband and I, and we do not get along. We don't even fight, we barely even look at each other. Plus, I am so sad to miss our daughters. They are our world, and I don't want to be the needy Mom that constantly bothers them while they are away. I do cry about missing them already and it's just not even a week yet. My second daughter is sensing my feelings, she's always been closer to understanding me. I don't want to dump my feelings on her, but I need to open up somewhere. Help?!? What do I do in an empty nest? Dear Open Nester Nancy, Thank you for reaching out, you are not alone here. There is a woman and her husband who have a podcast called "The Open Nesters." So, I want to gift you the re-frame of your situation. Empty nest sounds sad, and lonely. OPEN nest, sounds open and full of possibilities. And the open nest title invites a discussion. My advice is to write down
(for your own private eyes only) your most honest desires of how often you want to see your daughters, how often you want to speak to them. Then you can open up this dialogue with each of them separately. It can be email or a real conversation, which I highly recommend. Also, ask them individually for a time to do this, ask and make an appointment time, and ask for 15-20 minutes. It's an opportunity to deepen your relationship with them, and you sharing what you want and hearing what they are available for will relieve some of the anxiety and worry. Coming up with a plan, and sharing the words of "open nest" sets the tone of openness. And consider they may also miss you! As for the husband situation, that sounds like a compounded situation, so for now I'll say, this time is a special time to reach out to friends, get interested in hobbies and organizing and giving things away. Honoring this transition is intense and it constantly going to be shifting and changing. To ask Enchantress Shane a question, email her at: enchantedembodiment@gmail. com

Like a band who takes a hiatus, so have my articles… but I’m back to close out the summer. Live music has also been back this summer and with a vengeance. I wish I had more time to capitalize but being a dad has taken priorities and I can’t complain. Shoutout to my beautiful daughter Marigrace, she rocks and is
currently obsessed with The Frozen soundtrack! I’ve heard “Let It Go” so many times that it may be permanently stuck in my head! If you skim through The Rockaway Times you will see an array of events with Live Music on the horizon each week. Almost every place on the peninsula has some sort of live act Thursday-Sunday, the only issue you may have

is deciding where to go. On the professional stage, music has returned as well. Dead and Company just played a show at Citi field last week. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend this year, but a bunch of my friends went and without a doubt I’m sure they all had a great night. I also want to give a shoutout to The Bogmen who have a 20th anniversary memorial show planned for Webster Hall on Saturday 9/11. The Bogmen were an Indie rock band from Huntington, Long Island, New York. The band was formed in 1993 by Billy Campion, Bill Ryan, Brendan Ryan, Mark Wike, P.J. O'Connor and Clive Tucker. Though they were signed by major label Arista Records in 1995, they fell just short of mainstream success. My friend Charlie Heeran, who was killed on 9/11 introduced me to The Bogmen while we were at Xavier. They played at several venues including The Tap & Grill, Blackwater and even a gig on
The Rockaway Times the beach! Fun fact, they also used to play smaller shows with the alias The Subway Chickens! I remember seeing the Bogmen with Charlie our freshman year in Scranton and us yelling at the band until they acknowledged the Rockaway crew in attendance. They have always been one of my favorite bands, and like the Dead are best seen in a live environment as the band can be unpredictable. I am really looking forward to the show and will be thinking of Charlie as I often do. I can’t fathom that it’s been 20 years since that tragic and somber day. I was working in midtown on 9/11 and I remember it like it was yesterday. I guess it’s a wound that will never heal and maybe it’s not meant to. Out of respect for 9/11 there will be no financial write-up this time. God Bless Rockaway, Breezy Point and all the first responders who gave their lives trying to save others. You may be gone but you are not forgotten.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
A Cure for Autism? Folks, do you think there should be a cure for autism? Numerous studies are conducted to find for example, a cure for cancer, but should we hope the medical scientific community finds a cure for autism? Many in the neurodiversity movement are opposed to preventing or eradicating autism itself, and go as far to say that any push towards finding a ‘cure’ is eugenics. I had this discussion with my daughter’s dad, and his first question was—is autism a disease? After which he emphatically stated that yes, he wants our daughter, Soa, to have a good quality of life, but would curing her autism change her personality or character? Would she no longer be the same Soa we know and love? Definitely food for thought. I read a recent article about Spectrum 10K, the U.K.’s largest ever study into autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in which 10,000 people with autism were invited to join. The study, (conducted by the Autism Research Centre at the University of Cambridge in the U.K., in collaboration with the Wellcome Sanger Institute and University of California Los Angeles), was launched to examine the role genetic and environmental factors play in an ASD diagnosis. Also, a dual aim is to improve diagnoses, support, clinical care and quality of life for autistic individuals
and their families. What jumped out at me was: “The researchers say they view autism as a form of 'neurodiversity' and are opposed to eugenics or looking for ways to prevent or eradicate autism itself.” They stress the Spectrum 10K project is “not searching for a cure,” and they do not “in any way support that approach.” The project’s website adds: “Every member of the Spectrum 10K team values and respects autistic differences and are working to promote inclusion, acceptance and dignity for autistic people throughout society.” The researchers are also hoping to pinpoint support and treatments that alleviate unwanted symptoms and co-occurring conditions such as epilepsy, anxiety or depression. My daughter’s sometimes uncontrollable energy, stubbornness in refusing to listen to instructions and settle down—I understand and manage the best I can. However, when others seem to lose their patience, get angry, and shout at her, I become overcome with sadness. It’s not her fault. However, despite the daily challenges, would I want her autism to be cured? Yes, some days I want to cry and even run away. However, I don’t see her as a burden, but instead a blessing. Folks, I’m not in denial. Yes, some
days autism sucks and I wish I could will it away, but my love for Soa and her reciprocated love and affection make my heart sing. So as for eugenics and its association with finding a cure for autism, I simply can’t advocate for. Eugenics is the belief that we can improve the human race by eliminating undesirable genetic traits. The modern eugenics movement began here in the U.S. Among its proponents were Margaret Sanger, (an American birth control activist, sex educator, writer, and nurse, who popularized the term, "birth control;” opened the first birth control clinic in the U.S., and established organizations like today’s Planned Parenthood. As stated in an opinion piece in the Christian Post by columnist, Chuck Colson: “Eugenics is so dangerous and pernicious because it represents a radical disrespect for every human life, not just the life of the unborn. Adolf Hitler, an open admirer of the Amer-
ican and German eugenics movements, began eliminating the mentally and physically handicapped years before he started killing Jews.” Finding a cure for autism is not on my wish list. Autistic individuals bring so much joy and love, and their unique personalities add to that. I just want us as a community to build autism awareness and acceptance, and discover avenues to support them in enjoying a wonderfully fulfilling life. Join Rockaway Beach Autism Families at our End of Summer Barbecue Fundraiser on Sunday, August 29, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Knights of Columbus’ outdoor patio (333 Beach 90th Street). The goal of the fundraiser is to sponsor five families for a much-deserved fun “glamping” trip at Fort Tilden. We’re still welcoming donations in terms of food. Wrestle Talk NEWS By Eric Jayden
Well, as previously reported, former WWE Superstar and now AEW Superstar CM Punk made his debut this past Friday, August 20 on AEW Rampage to a sold out crowd and I have to say that was the loudest I have ever heard a crowd pop in years! He came out and gave a promo wearing his brand new t-shirt that has been reportedly sold out immediately after his debut. Pro Wrestling Tees, a wrestling-based t-shirt company reported that their website crashed due to the overwhelming amount of traffic of people wanting to buy the new CM Punk t-shirt. It was truly an awesome sight seeing CM Punk back and I can't wait to see what happens next. In other news, WWE Superstar Brock Lesnar made
his return at last week's Pay Per View Summerslam since Wrestlemania 36. This has squashed all the rumors and reports that he was possibly going to All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Brock Lesnar appeared after the Main Event between Roman Reigns and John Cena, sporting a new look with a ponytail and beard. This is setting up for a future match between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Summerslam also saw another return in the form of Becky Lynch who faced off against WWE Smackdown Women's Champion Bianca Belair in a match that left WWE fans in total shock and disgust, as Becky Lynch beat Bianca Belair in 20 seconds. Absolutely no one expected this to happen, and fans quickly took to social media to voice their disappointment with the end-
ing of the match. If you ask me, this is typical WWE dropping the ball with a potential rising star in the company in regard to Blanca Belair. But as always, time will tell and we shall see what happens. The question of the week comes from Joan L in Far Rockaway, and she asked, "Where has Nikki Bella been?" To be honest, I have not been keeping up with her as much lately nor have I seen her on TV unless I missed it. I do know that for some apparent reason, Nikki Bella was not allowed to
attend last week's Summerslam PPV which I find very weird, but then again nothing the WWE does anymore shocks me. Hopefully, we will see Nikki involved in a good storyline soon. Thanks for the question Joan. Thank you all and keep sending those questions in to eavil183@yahoo.com and follow me on Facebook - eric jayden, Twitter - @followthebadguy and Instagram - @ badguysexiness. Have a great week!
