Rogers Sold; McMahons To Add Hotel By Katie McFadden

Rogers, the oldest bar in Rockaway, has been sold. But it’s in good hands and the Guinness will continue to pour. The corner building on Beach 116th Street, which has been owned by the Rogers family since 1919, has been purchased and will be operated by brothers Mike and Jimmy McMahon and Mike’s wife, Karen. The owners of successful bars like Kevin Ryan’s on Flatbush Avenue and McMahon’s Public House by Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, may be taking over, but vow to keep Rogers as Rogers. “Two brothers, James and Cornelius Rogers came from Kentucky in 1919 and bought this building, Rogers owner, Rich Rogers said over a beer on a Tuesday afternoon, in what used to be the hotel lobby. “When it was first built, it was called Hotel Pierce. When they bought it, they named it Hotel Rogers. It was a bar/ restaurant and there were hotel rooms here back in the day. Rockaway was like the Hamptons back then, probably because there was no air conditioning, he joked. Rich’s father, Robert F. and his cousin, James J. Rogers, eventually took ownership

of the family business while Robert’s children, Rich, Neil, Jean Ann and the late Robert F. Jr., helped out. “We all grew up in the business and pitched in as a family, Rich Rogers said. In 1980, the siblings

took over and Rogers continued as a hotel until 1992. The family was once offered a pretty penny from the City to turn the property into Section 8 housing, but the family refused.

Three generations of Rogers have operated Rockaway’s oldest bar, and now the taps will be passed on to the McMahons. “It’s the right time and the right people, Rogers said. “They’re great people from Ireland. When the McMahon brothers moved to Rockaway, it was a great thing for this town. I got to know Mike and he made an offer on the place and we’re moving along with it. We think alike and whatever they do is going to be very good for Rockaway and very good for the block. With Rockaway back on the upswing, it’s time for Beach 116th Street to get more focus. Mike McMahon plans to do just that. “We have a good track record of opening bars on Flatbush Avenue, in Europe, in Ireland and by the Barclays Center. Now its time for Rockaway, McMahon said. “My partner, Jimmy and my wife, Karen, have been listening to people forever say, ‘When are you going to open a place in Rockaway?’ We need to give people a place to stay in Rockaway. Our intention is to bring back Beach 116th and the Boulevard with a hotel. McMahon, who has lived in Rockaway for the past five years, Continued on page 21

The Rockaway Times

The editor asked me to do a special column about mumps, based on the commotion over the three cases in Rockaway. Mumps, also known as epidemic parotitis (the parotid gland makes saliva and is located directly in front of the ears), is a highly contagious viral disease. Initial symptoms include fever, achiness, tiredness and headache. Usually this is followed by painful swelling of one or more commonly both parotid glands. Symptoms usually occur two to three weeks following exposure and usually resolve fully in seven to ten days. About one-third of patients have mild or no symptoms. Symptoms are usually more severe in adults and may rarely include meningitis (inflammation of the membrane that covers the brain), pancreatitis, deafness and infertility in men (orchitis, or pain and swelling of one or both testicles, occurs in 15-40 percent of men who have reached puberty, however infertility is quite rare. Orchitis usually is seen about 10 days after the onset of parotid swelling). Mumps is spread by inhalation of respiratory droplets from coughing and by direct contact with an infected person. It spreads rapidly among people living in close quarters. The diagnosis may be confirmed by swabbing the mouth for the virus or by a blood test for antibodies (may be falsely negative in vaccinated people). There is no specific treatment and it is rarely fatal (one death per 10,000 cases). Two doses of vaccine (MMR) will usually prevent the disease although rare cases do occur in vaccinated persons. Because vaccination is less or uncommon in developing countries, outbreaks in the US have occurred in areas with high immigrant populations. In addition some parents, in the mistaken belief that the MMR vaccine causes autism (see one of my previous columns), refuse to have their children vaccinated, putting those children and those around them at high risk of infection. It is hard to misdiagnose mumps. The chipmunk-like face is not caused by any other disease except acute parotitis, which is usually one-sided and does not cause the flu-like symptoms typical of mumps.. “Swollen glands typically causes swelling below the jaw, not above it. During a mumps epidemic it is wise to avoid closed or confined public areas as an infected person may not know they have mumps initially. The facial swelling appears several days after the constitutional symptoms so at first they may think they have a bad cold or the flu. Also, although not transmitted by food, mumps is spread by inhaling

aerosolized droplets coughed into the air by an infected person, touching an infected person or touching a surface that that person recently touched. And yes, the best protection is vaccination although there is a small chance that a vaccinated person may still catch it. No vaccine is ever 100 percent effective. The mumps vaccine was invented by Merck and went into use in 1967. Before the existence of the vaccine mumps was the leading cause of viral meningitis. In 1968 there were more than 150,000 cases of mumps reported while by 2008 only 265 cases were reported in the US. Mumps is considered to be most contagious in the five days following symptom onset so isolation is usually recommended during that period. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be used for symptom relief. Aspirin should not be used for children because of the risk of Reyes syndrome. Anyone caring for an individual with mumps should wear a surgical mask and gloves and use alcohol-based hand cleaner after contact with the patient. Kerri Gallagher finished eighth in the semifinal of the women’s 1,500-meter run Sunday, ending her competition at the IAAF World Championships. She’s simply had an amazing year. And the main thing is: she qualifies for the Olympic Trials in 2016. Go Kerri go! ***** You’ve heard the ferry will cost $2.75, same as a Metrocard when it starts running in 2017. You may not have heard that the Citywide Ferry Plan will not integrate with MTA’s MetroCard for transfers. For people taking the ferry into the City and then catching a train uptown, they’ll have to pay two full fares. That won’t help ridership. ***** Speaking of the ferry, you might remember in February 2014 the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for continuing the Rockaway ferry service. Nothing came of that and the service was shut down in October. We

were curious about that RFP and submitted questions under the Freedom of Information Act. Basically, we asked for a list of companies that submitted proposals and copies of the actual proposals – in January of this year. We got our answers this week, eight months late (though perhaps an honest email mistake on the part of EDC caused the delay). Anyway, turns out Seastreak was the only company to submit a proposal. Their proposed fares and subsidies were redacted so there wasn’t much juicy info available. The proposed plan pretty much kept the service we had in place: Five outbound in the a.m and five return trips in the p.m. rush hour. ***** Funny we just got the Freedom of Information material we requested. The Associated Press reports that Mayor Bill de Blasio has issued a “broad mandate” giving his office the authority to review all requests for public re-

cords directed at any city agency that might “reflect directly on the mayor.” So it’s gotta pass his approval before it’s free information. So much for transparent governance. ***** Oh, wait. There’s another ferry tidbit. In a “draft environmental impact statement” issued by the EDC, there are plans to offer shuttle service to the ferry which will again dock at Beach 108th Street. The shuttle would include two routes running east and west. The east shuttle bus route “would extend to Beach 67th Street and Bayfield Avenue; the west shuttle bus route would extend to Jacob Riis Park. The extension of the shuttle bus route would accommodate the Rockaway ferry route’s anticipated 60-minute headway, with each bus taking roughly 40 to 45 minutes to complete the route.” Wait, a second. The east will only go as far as Beach 67th? And take 40-45 minutes just to get to the ferry?! 40 blocks in 40 minutes? That’s a fast walk not a bus ride. Maybe a crawling shuttle is part of the Mayor’s Vision Zero traffic safety plan. ***** The End of Summer Half Marathon is Saturday at 8 a.m. starting at Beach 17th Street. It’s the last time runners will be on actual boardwalk

in Rockaway. Some 500 runners are expected. For more information go to RockapulcoRun.com ***** It’s the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans had a population of 480,000 before the levees broke, and now there are about 380,000. Many of the current residents are actually newcomers and it’s estimated that 100,000 people left and never came back. ***** Arcadia Publishing just sent us a copy of The Jewish Communities of the Five Towns and Rockaway. It’s full of great pictures and details of the rich history of the early years of Jewish growth and development in the area. You can get a copy at online bookstores and it’s possible some local stores will carry it as well. ***** Although everyone is moaning about the summer being just about over, there’s an action packed September ahead. Off the top of our head we know there’s the honey fest, the Rockaway Bike Parade, the new Poseidon’s Parade, the Oyster Festival, and the Great Irish Fair in Coney Island. And we know we’re forgetting a ton more. ***** Still, we’ve got to join moaners and the groaners: The next time we publish will be in September! Say it ain’t so!

Paw Project and Local Vets Seek to Protects Pets By Dylan Watton Imagine if all of your fingers were suddenly cut off at the first knuckle down. How would your life change? You would be in near constant pain, for starters. The simplest tasks— opening a jar, driving, throwing a baseball—would become exponentially more difficult or downright impossible. You’d be irritable and at times utterly unpleasant to be around. Sounds awful, right? This is what millions of cats live with on a daily basis as a result of the widespread yet outdated and inhumane practice of declawing. “It’s not even really a claw,” Dr. Susan Whittred of Animal Hospital of the Rockaways said. “It’s a portion of the bone, not just a nail.” “Most people don’t realize what they are doing to the cat when they bring them in for declawing,” Dr. Allan Simon said. “Many vets don’t explain how severely they are hurting the cat.” Declawing can cause house cats to permanently change the way they walk, further damaging their limbs. It can also cause them become more aggressive and urinate and defecate outside of the litter box due to the pain the litter may cause the cat. Both Dr. Simon and Dr. Whittred

are members of the Paw Project, an organization that seeks to “educate the public about the painful and crippling effects of cat declawing, to promote animal welfare through the abolition of the practice of declaw surgery, and to rehabilitate big cats that have been declawed,” according to its website. Created by Dr. Jennifer Conrad, the Paw Project initially focused on big cats such as lions, tigers, and cougars being declawed and the lifelong complications that frequently comes with the procedure for them. But the process and cruelty of declawing is the same for cats both big and small. “When Dr. Conrad brought her findings and message to vets in this country,” Dr. Whittred said, “she expected that they would love it. But she was shocked to find out that many were unreceptive to her message.” Both Dr. Whittred and Dr. Simon agreed that while some vets may not be familiar with the serious consequences that declawing brings, many others are reluctant or unwilling to stop declawing because of the loss of business they would experience. The Paw Project has made some inroads in its quest to outlaw this

cruel practice. Twelve European countries have banned the practice, as well as Australia and Brazil. “In Israel, I believe it is a $20,000 fine to declaw cats,” Dr. Simon added. But progress in this country has been extremely slow. As of now, only eight cities in California have outlawed declawing, including Los Angeles and San Francisco; it is not legally banned anywhere else in the country. “We are way behind the rest of the civilized world in this respect,” Dr. Simon said. In a silver lining, Manhattan Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal introduced legislation to ban declawing statewide, and the bill is currently awaiting a committee hearing. At Animal Hospital of the Rockaways, declawing is not a procedure that is even offered to patients. Instead, Dr. Simon, Dr. Whittred, and their colleagues provide many humane alternatives to cats and their owners. “You can always come in on a regular basis and trim their nails, which causes no pain to the cats,” Dr.

Whittred said. She also recommended buying a wide variety of scratching posts to encourage cats to not scratch against furniture. Another possibility is the use of Soft Paws, inexpensive plastic-like claw coverings that can be put on the cat at home or at the vet. Dr. Simon has been a vet for 42 years while Dr. Whittred initially started out in the music business before switching over to her veterinary practice 12 years ago. Both of them said that the wide variety of disciplines veterinarians must study, as well their love for animals inspired them to join the profession. “We do it all, unlike those human doctors,” Dr. Whittred dryly said. They each hope that their message and partnership with the Paw Project will encourage cat owners to think twice before declawing. “Education is so important,” Dr. Simon said. “Most people just don’t know how inhumane it really is.”

let’s get started on your journey today!

The Sun, the Sea, the Sand, the Shops: Welcome to Beach 116th

In a continuous effort to promote and beautify Beach 116th Street, the Beach 116th Street Partnership recently installed welcome banners along the commercial strip and surrounding areas. The Partnership, along with founding supporter Citi Community Development, unveiled the banners, which help give a cohesive visual identity to the block and strengthen the brand of the busy shopping cor-

ridor. The Partnership involved the community with the banner design process by asking people to come up with a slogan to attract and welcome visitors as part of an online contest. Joe Lane of Broad Channel was chosen as the winner for his submission: “the sun, the sea, the sand, the shops.” Lane says he got his inspiration for writing the phrase from attending Rockaway’s International Children’s Festival in June with his family, where they enjoyed the fes-

tivities, sunshine and shopping that Beach 116th Street has to offer. The slogan is now a part of the new banners. “These banners will welcome visitors to Rockaway’s main shopping street as they step out of the subway station, exit buses and drive on the block,” Linda Humphrey, Executive Director of The Beach 116th Street Partnership, said. She hopes that as the people in Rockaway enjoy the sun and beaches, that they will also

be reminded to stop into the local shops and support the merchants who are on the block year-round.

Properties for Sale on Beach 116th Street Looking to buy some land or property on Beach 116th Street? CPEX Real Estate is marketing a few spots along the busy commercial strip. CPEX’s Development and Conversion Sales Team, consisting of Managing Director Sean R. Kelly, Esq. and Associates James O’Neill and Sean Sears, is marketing the block through a development site, which consists of three contiguous lots with

a total footprint of approximately 16,000 square feet that provides approximately 64,000 buildable square feet. The property is located between Beach 115th and Beach 116th Street at 157 Beach 115th Street. The asking price for the lot is currently $4,250,000. CPEX is also marketing two other properties for sale along Beach 116th Street. we expect to see significant growth. There is strong demand for new residential rental product in this market. Protect your world Auto Home Life Retirement

By Katie McFadden “Kylie Jenner was in this dress,” owner Jamie Stuart Mcleod said to a customer looking at an item at her new shop, Polly & Esther Boutique. “I love that sweatshirt, it looks so cute on you,” she said to another on a Tuesday morning. Mcleod speaks to each customer who walks into her store like they’re a close friend. The small corner store on Beach 129th Street, which used to be occupied by a podiatrist, looks more like a home on the outside, but the inside walls decorated with clothes racks full of trendy shirts, dresses, overalls and more make it a paradise for someone who might be looking for a cute outfit for a night out. Polly & Esther Boutique, located at 129-03 Newport Avenue, provides residents with one less reason to leave the peninsula. The clothing store caters to women between the ages of 12 and 40, with products changing consistently. “Every week we get new merchandise. I want to keep it fresh, so when you walk in here, you have a different experience every time,” Mcleod said. Mcleod, a Rockaway resident for the past 15 years, has more than 20 years experience working in the fashion industry and comes from a trendy bloodline. “My mom was the first designer to ever make tailored pants for women. She was Lucille Ball’s stylist,” she said. Her sister, Jill Stuart, is also a wellestablished New York City based high-end designer. “It’s kind of in my blood.” Mcleod followed in fashion’s footsteps and majored in fashion merchandizing at what was called the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences. She is co-owner of a junior sportswear brand, also by the name of Polly & Esther. “We sell to all the major junior chain stores like Wet Seal, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21 and the Shirt Shop in the junior’s department of Macy’s features all Polly & Esther shirts,” Mcleod ex-

plained. She designs 70 percent of the clothing featured in her new Rockaway boutique. Mcleod said she wanted to open a store for a long time. “I had been looking for a spot and then this one opened on 129th. It was like a dream come true for me,” she said. “It’s my first retail store. I love it.” While Rockaway may be flush with new restaurants and other businesses, clothing stores have only started to pop up recently. “I’ve lived here and I’ve noticed that there were no clothing stores for anyone between the ages of 12 and 40. I feel like everybody has to go over the bridge if they need an outfit or something cool or trendy to wear. Rockaway is just booming now. After everything we’ve been through with Sandy, it was the time to bring a store like this here. It’s a cute place for the community to come and shop and hang out.” Polly & Esther Boutique first opened on Sunday, August 16 and Mcleod says the reception has been positive so far. “Everybody that walks in here says they’re so happy this is here. All of the shelves were filled and now we’re waiting on reorders because things sold out quickly. We had to stay open late the other night because people were coming in later.” In addition to young women’s clothing, Mcleod sells some household and decorative items and will soon add shoes and accessories to her store. She may incorporate men’s clothing in the future. She’ll also offer various discounts, like a 10 percent discount that is currently available to college students with a school ID. “I’m gonna take it one day at a time and see how things go,” Mcleod said. “I would love for the community to just come on in and love the store and what we’re doing here. I’m looking forward to a very successful year.” Polly & Esther Boutique is open 11 a.m. to 7 pm., seven days a week.

October Waves: Photography by Sandra Gottlieb at The New York Hall of Science, Queens From The New York Hall Of Science: The New York Hall of Science announced October Waves, an exhibition of thirty large-scale seascapes by Sandra Gottlieb, will run from September 1, 2015 – October 31, 2015 in the museum’s LeCroy and Ramp Galleries. The museum is located at 47-01 111th Street, Queens. (The Museum hours are: Mon – Fri, 9:30 am – 5 pm; Sat & Sun, 10 am – 6 pm). October Waves is a photographic exploration by Gottlieb, a remarkably inventive and prolific artist, and is her sixth series of seascapes photographed in Rockaway in the last 15 years. This most recent series is a documentation of the 2013 hurricane season when the sea and swells were caught up in a rough and tumble drama. “Sandra Gottlieb’s camera confronts the cascading waves with results as profound as they are beautiful and compelling. Creating meditations in time, her lens

dissects a temporal curve, catching the waves with each frame as they play like actors upon a stage. Her interests envelop both the conceptual and the romantic in a wondrous duality . . . Her mastery of the medium allows her vision to reverberate between the two, making her photographs rich material for consideration while simultaneously offering the oceanic images up to the viewer’s simple and sensual enjoyment,” Phil Tarley said. Critic Dominique Nahas observes, “Gottlieb immerses herself and her viewers into what might be called the dramaturgy of the Wave, its Sturm und Drang. October Waves gives us not only the local color, so to speak, of Rockaway Beach, it also offers the viewer what appears to be thirty different character studies or individual portraits of waves.” Gottlieb’s solo exhibitions include the Alden B. Dow Museum of Art and Science, Midland, MI; Krasl Art Center, St. Joseph’s, MI;

Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Mount Vernon, IL; The Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Ormond Beach, FL; Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta, GA; Robert Ferst Center for the Arts, Atlanta, GA; Danville Museum of Fine Art & History, Danville, VA; Ashtabula Arts Center, Ashtabula,

OH; an upcoming exhibition at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, Tampa, FL in January 2016; and the Chicago Academy of Sciences’ Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (to be announced). Sandra can be reached at sandragottliebinfo@me.com. Her website is: www.sandragottlieb.com

Birth Of A Book Club? Summer Days... Bring Cerebral Haze By Tara Henley

In early July I ordered six books from Amazon. They were important and inspired books for my self-imposed reading list. They included Jon Kraukauer’s Where Men Win Glory about our American hero, Pat Tillman, and Mark Levin’s political manifesto Liberty and Tyranny. How had I not read them yet? Well, it’s the end of August. Guess how many books I read this summer? One. Oh, and it wasn’t one of those six from my well-intentioned list. Didn’t read Dexter Filkin’s Forever War, the harrowing account of the rise of the Taliban and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan as seen through the prizewinning war correspondent’s eyes. Nor did I get to the brave narrative, Heretic, by Ms. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who now shares something with Salman Rushdie. A fatwa. Nope, the one book I read this summer was found on the bench in front of the Breezy stores. It was an old Sandra Brown romance novel whose title I forgot or never knew. Sure it was embarrassingly simple and beyond predictable. There was no question the hot, female reporter would indeed bed the tall, gorgeous, AND principled D. A. whom she so detested. I suppose I read it (in a day!) because it took zero toll on my brain. It was effortless and I’ll admit, a bit scintillating to read the racy descriptions of these two pillow lipped characters’ trysts on the office desk, the bear rug of the log cabin...you get the

picture. Anyway, I’m not going to beat myself up for not reading those six significant books these last two months. Summer days are meant for trashy novels and celebrity magazines on the beach. Our brains can only handle so much in the summer. “Ocean or bay?” “Connolly’s then the Bowl?” “Bud Light or Corona?” That said, summer is coming to an end. September means back to school for many. Back to working out our cerebral muscles. Fall is the perfect time to open those books that inspire us, question us, and teach us. Just like exercising is easier with company, we’ll do it together. Please join me in starting a book club. We don’t have a name yet, but we do have our first selection. It is Escape from Camp 14 by Blaine Harden. It tells the true story of a young man who escapes from a North Korean labor camp. Yes, there are still concentration camps today. Trust me on this selection. It is short, easy to read, gripping, and timely. “Book and Bar” (I’m trying it out) is a great push to read something you ordinarily might not, and also an excuse to patronize one of our many cool establishments in Rockaway and Breezy. No pressure to speak if you’re a bit shy. Simply read the book and show up. Stay tuned for where and when. In the meantime, if you’ve got interest or ideas, please email me at Taradise1234@gmail.com.

Cross Bay Bridge Tolls Total 16.3 Millin in 2014 Beginning in January of this year, the Rockaway Times filed a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request with the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA) in order to obtain data about the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge. The data requested included the amount of tolls collected from the bridge in 2014 and information about salaries and payroll regarding operation and management of the bridge. On

August 13, the TBTA sent back two documents containing information about these two items. The bridge generated $16,268,754 from a total of 7,553,063 bridge crossings in 2014. This was a slight decrease from the prior year, where 7.7 million trips generated $16.8 million in toll money. For non-Rockaway residents, the cash toll for the bridge was $3.75 for cars in 2014. By comparison, the Marine Parkway Bridge had 7.4 million trips gen-

erating $15.6 million in 2014 with the same toll costs. In March 2015, the toll on both bridges was raised to $4.00, so an increase in revenue during the current year should be expected. Both bridges constitute the least traveled structures operated by the TBTA in the five boroughs, as the next highest one, the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel (formerly the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel), had 16.9 million drivers—more than both Rockaway bridges combined.

The Cross Bay Bridge had total operations labor costs of $3,882,542, with wages for operations personnel equaling $2,645,181 and benefits costing the remainder. The TBTA noted “Most [bridge and tunnel] operating expenses are budgeted centrally, not by facility.” As such, the costs the TBTA provided do not include wages for engineering and construction nor wages for administrative not permanently stationed at the bridge.

Last Day for Sandy Claims Review is September 15 The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently announced that the more than 11,000 National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders who filed claims for damage are in the Hurricane Sandy Claims Review process. FEMA has already validated and begun providing additional funds to policyholders taking part in the Hurricane Sandy Claims Review. “If you believe your flood claim was underpaid for any reason, we encourage you to do what so many of your neighbors are doing and ask FEMA to take another look,” Roy Wright, Deputy Associate Administrator for FEMA’s Federal In-

surance and Mitigation Administration, said. Policyholders have until September 15 to request a review of their Hurricane Sandy claims. To be eligible, policyholders must have experienced flood damage between Oct. 27, 2012 and Nov. 6, 2012. Policyholders can call the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866-337-4262 to request a review. Alternately, policyholders can go online to www.fema.gov/hurricane-sandy-nfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The completed form may be emailed to FEMA-sandyclaimsreview@fema. dhs.gov to start the process.

For individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and use 711 or VRS, please call 866-337-4262. For individuals using a TTY, please call 800-4627585 to begin the review process. When calling, policyholders should have available the name on the policy, address of the damaged property, the name of the insurance company and the policy number that was in effect at the time of the loss. Policyholders will be asked a series of questions to determine whether they qualify for review. Once qualified, policyholders will be called by an adjuster, acting as a case worker, to

begin the review. Most reviews can be concluded within 90 days. Files will be assigned to an NFIP-certified adjuster who will review the claim file. Adjusters will contact policyholders to guide them through the review process. Policyholders who have already requested their review can call 866337-4262 if they have questions or need more information. After a policyholder receives the results of their claims review in writing from FEMA, they may seek reconsideration by a neutral third party reviewer if they are dissatisfied with the result. The review is an Continued on page 16

We Have Met the Enemy and He Is Us…. Kudos to our three fellow Americans who bravely intervened and stopped a potentially deadly terrorist act on a packed French commuter train last Friday by beating an Islamic terrorist unconscious with his own weapon and then hog tying him, awaiting a response by the French authorities. Their brave and unselfish actions were promptly recognized by the French government and all three young men were presented with France’s highest accolade, the Legion d’Honneur medal, by French President Francois Hollande. Great work guys! That being said, take a moment if you will and try to imagine what would have happened if this same incident had taken place on an Amtrak train here in New York? Sadly, there would have been crowds in the street screaming for their indictments claiming ethnic profiling and physical abuse - “They beat him senseless…,” “They tortured (hog tied) him…,” ‘This was nothing more than Muslim profiling…,” etc. The media would be busy blaming the Second Amendment claiming this was a gun control issue. Some politicians would be cringing in their office, actually praying that the terrorist was not a Muslim and simply some nut case out of fear of being asked a question requiring a response that might offend the Muslim community at large. Elitist professors hiding within our universities would busy themselves lecturing their students that this man is simply a lone guy who has issues, problems, psychopathic behaviors that escalated to the point where he wanted to get back at society, and he unfortunately

snapped because they truly believe it would be an even greater tragedy if their cherished view of diversity were to become a casualty here. Our own government would, as they have continually done in the past, intentionally avoid the use of any term, such as “Muslim,” “terrorist” or “Islamic,” so as not to offend anyone. Remember Major Nidal Halik Hasan who murdered 13 and wounded over 30 back in 2009 at Fort Hood in Texas? Of course you don’t. Our government claimed that was nothing more than an incident of “workplace violence.” We can no longer afford to countenance the pervasive and sophomoric mentality among our leaders, our educators and our media that assume the problems of the world must be addressed in a polite, politically and morally correct manner in order to understand our enemies and to ensure their ideas of “cultural diversity,” “political correctness” and “religious sensitivity” remain unchallenged by the truth. This foolish and dangerous mindset always brings to mind the cartoon character Pogo who is often quoted as saying - “We have met the enemy and he is us...” Political correctness, cultural diversity and inclusion be damned, there is only one simple truth that must be constantly kept in mind and that is that if objective reality and its accompanying truth cannot be recognized and acted upon by those we have placed in positions of leadership and trust, then they no longer deserve those positions. A+A RESTAURANT MAKES THE GRADE By Dylan Watton Terrance Chen was trying to think of a new way to get people in the door. His A+A Chinese Restaurant, which opened on May 12, had been experiencing modest success but like any business owner he was looking to expand his customer base. Suddenly, he was struck by an idea. Up until that point, anybody who was 80 or older and had a birthday could come in and eat for free. “Now, for the month of September,” Chen declared, “If you prove it’s your birthday and make a reservation, you can eat for free too!” He thought for a moment. “As long as you’re ages one to 100 on your birthday,” he added. A+A differs from Rockaway’s established Chinese restaurants in more than just providing customers with a birthday meal, though. Chen and his wife Lulu had a vision for a different type of eating establishment brought on by years of experience and an affection for true home-style cooking. “We had a restaurant in Flushing that closed after only a year,” Chen said. Flushing is the city-wide hub for Chinese food, even more so than Manhattan’s or Brooklyn’s fa-

mous Chinatown areas, and thus competition is fierce. Living in Oceanside, the Chens were familiar with Rockaway and once an opportunity to open their restaurant on the peninsula presented itself, they took it. “I wanted to introduce real Chinese food to Rockaway,” Chen said. A+A’s head chef, Chef Ho, hails from Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province in southwest China. “In China there are eight styles of food total,” Chen explained. “Most Chinese people like Sichuan food the most.” Famous Sichuan (also spelled Szechuan) dishes include kung pao chicken, double cooked pork, and dan dan noodles, all of which are served at A+A. “We have five or six guys working in the kitchen, usually,” Chen added. “Every one of them has been professionally trained in China. Chef Ho worked at a fivestar restaurant [in China].” A+A also distinguishes itself from traditional American Chinese food fare by offering fresh, healthy ingredients and dishes. “We always buy our food from a primary market, sometimes in Flushing or Manhattan, but also sometimes

right from China,” Chen said. “Our sweet and sour sauce is made with organic haw slices,” he added, referencing the Chinese hawthorn, a bright red fruit used to make many traditional Chinese sauces and foods. While there are some standards on the menu, such as fried dumplings and lo mein, you won’t find things like fried noodles or especially fried chicken. “Why don’t we make chicken wings?” Chen asked rhetorically. “They contain so much oil inside. Most of the time the chicken is fried in the same oil over and over, that’s how it gets golden. We always use fresh soybean oil to fry.” Among Chen’s personal recommendations on the menu are the vegetable spring roll, which has barely any grease on it and is best complimented by the sweet

and sour sauce. The house seafood special soup contains fresh squid, clams, scallops, and shrimp in a clear broth, and is served piping hot. The General Tso’s tofu is crispy on the outside yet delicate and smooth once bitten into, and contains a natural tanginess with no overpowering sweet taste. A+A Chinese Restaurant is located between Beach 92nd and 91st Street on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. They offer eat-in, take out and delivery options, but the food is best experienced at the restaurant, according to Chen. “My family has been in this business for over 20 years,” he said. “We want to give Rockaway Chinese food as we know it.” And if you have a September birthday, there’s no better place to go.

So much has happened so fast in Rockaway that it’s easy to overlook something happening that is absolutely fascinating. With the massive infrastructure projects going on at the boardwalk and Marine Parkway bridge, it’s been the little things that are really making a difference in Rockaway, and it is reminiscent of early Soho, Tribeca, Williamsburg and Greenpoint: it’s called entrepreneurship, and its at the heart of being American. Despite our current political leadership at the city and federal level toward socialism, the heart of the American dream is capitalism, and capitalism starts not with big business, but with individuals who have an idea and a dream. How many people do you know in Rockaway that despite the terrible job drought since 2008, have decided to open their own business? And are making it work! There have been so many new and innovative ideas that have blossomed into full businesses, hiring local kids and helping the local economy, that it’s easy to overlook. It has not always been this way. And the current group of entrepreneurs knows no age, gender or race barrier. There are kids opening surf lesson businesses, or yogurt businesses, or health food businesses. Women opening their own businesses, old guys who had careers doing something completely different opening a newspaper or surf shop (sorry guys but it’s true, and it’s great). These people are the pioneers of the new Rockaway, and for the most part they are local people who have had an idea and are putting their capital and hard work at risk to deliver a service or product. Maybe it was the financial crash of 2008, maybe it was Sandy, maybe it’s the current political climate, maybe it’s the fact that it’s near impossible to get a job, a career, a life! Whatever it is – it’s causing a juggernaut of new businesses and services which provide residents with more choice of where to shop, eat, and enjoy themselves. And we all benefit. When the fall comes and winter starts to peek in on us, it will be really important to continue to patronize these new establishments. The summer crowds will be gone, and it will be easy to cross the bridges again on a weekend, but those entrepreneurs will still be here – and we need to support

them, because it’s not easy, in fact its really hard to run a business. The statistics on new businesses are daunting so I will not repeat them – but of the many that have blossomed, almost all seem to be making it, which is astounding, and it will be up to all of us to continue to encourage them and others to keep going forward. Who knows, maybe one of us will open a business too? Actually running a band is sort of entrepreneurial. I say sort of because, after ten years of the Grayriders, we have probably spent more than we made, in fact I am sure of it. So that makes us poor business people. We provide a service, but to deliver that service, we had to buy equipment, and then buy it again after Sandy, we had to learn our craft (some would say that is a lifelong ambition), and we had to book gigs and build a following. We have been pretty good at some of that. The Rockaway music scene is quite competitive now, and the venues have the upper hand, as there are many great local acts. Some venues are terrific patrons, never haggling about money or drinks, some are not like that and sometimes don’t always pay. Such is life in the music business. But in our case, our livelihood doesn’t depend on the band; not true with the real entrepreneur, they risk everything. So next time you walk into a shop, a bar, a restaurant, or hear a band, pick up a newspaper, learn to surf, paddleboard, do yoga, buy a smoothie, buy some yogurt, see a doctor, remember that those people are real Americans pursuing the American dream and building something really special right here in Rockaway and they didn’t do it through the internet or by outsourcing to overseas markets, it’s here in America – support them all 12 months. Ok, the surfing thing may be hard in December, but work with me, people. Oh, and for those that have figured out that I usually use birds in my columns as metaphors, this article has been about the rarest of birds: the Rockaway Entrepreneur. On November 12, St. Francis College in partnership with the Center for Entrepreneurship will sponsor a panel discussion that I will moderate on Rockaway Entrepreneurs with real Rockaway Entrepreneurs. See this column for more details in the coming weeks.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 2015 thing or someone there, at having something or someone new around, whatever the change at hand may be. Find a good listener and just talk it out, all the thoughts that are going in and out of our mind – just let them out. If the thought of the change or the change when it happens comes with worry, try to tell yourself or repeat out loud: “I have nothing to worry about. There is nothing to worry about. Worry causes un-wellness and I am well and happy. Saying and thinking these positive thoughts can take hold inside and alter the way you’re looking at the change

CHANGE No matter how many times we utter “change is good, we still sometimes have that hesitation when something is about to change big time. It almost feels like the right foot wants to take that step forward but the back foot seems stuck in the sand. We know that there is nothing we can do to stop the change, yet, we resist anyway. It could be because of our natures, our upbringing, our life experiences, who knows – when change comes either abruptly or planned, it could throw us for a loop. “Just when I think I have learned the way to live, life changes. Hugh Prather (author

of Notes to Myself ) Perhaps with mindful focus, the whole process can feel better. With concentrated thought, the effect of the change could be a little less upsetting. It’s almost like putting new clothes on: this feels different, but, is it ok? Can it be ok? Some things we choose to change; other things people close to us choose to change, other things just happen. We cannot seem to control any of it. It helps to talk about it so the dialogue just doesn’t stay in your head going round and round and round. Express your concerns, your regret at not having some-

before you. Try this visualization: imagine a bridge in front of you with an open blue sky and puffy clouds above, sun is yellow/orange and warming. As you walk over, know that the other side can be just as beautiful as the side you’re on, just different. Different and beautiful. With every step, you gain confidence and comfort knowing that life is not static; it is constantly flowing and changing. And this is every single person’s reality. May you be happy; may you be free; may you let go of things that do not serve you; may you have inner peace.

Paying It Forward By Alex Karinsky

One of my favorite things in the world is giving surf lessons to my friends, their friends and local kids…for free. Watching the enjoyment and thrill they experience conquering the stand-up process to then glide their way to shore just gets me stoked. To be so fortunate to have a skill that others crave and then share it with them is so humbling and gratifying. Another new favorite thrill is being involved in the RBSA NYC Youth Surfing Championships, not only seeing the joy the kids get out of competing, but the relationships they build with new kids they’ve never met, all the while trying to crush their competitors in a

heat, and then laugh out loud after it’s over. But one thing that is so magnificent are the other people involved, such as the sponsors and individuals who donate their time and money to make these events successful. One of the sponsors that does something amazing every time they’re involved is the Share the Stoke Foundation. At each contest they sponsor they donate a brand new Firewire surfboard to a local kid who wants to surf but has no means of obtaining a board. This last contest, main sponsors UMAS and Share The Stoke Foundation donated a board to Alex Normatova, who was just thrilled beyond words. As I helped put the

fins in, wax the board and got his leash set up, he was just beaming ear to ear and so amped to take it out in the water…..but wait, he’s

never surfed before. Oh well, guess I need to give another surfing lesson, which I can’t wait to do!

Don’t Let The Music Die!

Dear Editor: I’d like to take this opportunity to bring some awareness to the community of the just out of control harassment that’s been going on for the past few years at the concession on Beach 106th Street on the Boardwalk. It seems that every time there is live music or a DJ a very small group of people living in 1 Beach 105 and 10620 Shorefront Parkway call 311 to complain about it. The music is not that loud. I know because I live right across the street on the second floor of 1Beach 105. If anybody should be complaining about loud it should be me. Now I want everybody to know that I have a personal stake in this. I play in a classic rock and blues band and we played at Caracas this past Friday, August 21st. We were supposed to play from 6pm until 9pm. We got told at 8:45 to stop by security at Caracas as the NYPD was called in because of someone’s complaint to 311. This happens every time there is music here. NYPD came again the next night when there was a DJ playing as well. This person or people have consistently called 311 every time there is live music or a dj at Caracas this year and last year as well. Every time! I think it’s been over 35 times just this year alone! Now I just don’t get it. I live directly across the street from Caracas. I have never thought that the music is that loud, and I’m a musician and an audio engineer. The City says that the sound pressure level can’t be above 90Db. Our level never went above 70Db where we were playing. The PA was facing out towards the beach, not at the buildings. And I believe that it has to be that level at their apartment for the complaint to be justified. Keep in mind that every time 311 is called NYPD has to respond. They’re getting tired of it (NYPD) and I can’t blame them. It has to stop. And not for nothing when it interferes with what I’m doing be it watching tv or whatever I just close the windows and turn on the A/C. And it really isn’t that loud to begin with! I really think that these people just hate the fact that their sleepy little beach/bungalow community is finally becoming a full fledged resort/ recreation area and they want to stop it now! I have also heard that they have the ear of our assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder as well. It blows me away, all people used to complain about for years here is that there was

Page 19

THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 2015

nothing to do in Rockaway and now that there is they want to get rid of it! Come on!! I feel so bad for the folks who have come to Rockaway to open Caracas. They are providing jobs, a great place for food, drink and just a great gathering place for the few summer months that they are open. They are under incredible stress every day because of the threat of thousands of dollars in fines. They are trying to placate these complainers every day! They used to have music 4 days a week. Now it is only 3 with a live band on one of them for only 3 HOURS a week. And the complaints go out every time!! The few complainers who have the City’s ear are doing their damndest to ruin the good times enjoyed by the majority of people who live or come here. It’s gotta stop people! If you want to enjoy great live music from some of the many great LOCAL bands we have in Rockaway (not just mine!) and have really nice gathering places on the Boardwalk then we have to make our presence known. I believe we are a majority and if we can make OUR views know to our local politicians and the City I believe we can keep the good times happening here. The time is now people. If we don’t do something soon you can just kiss live music on the boards goodbye. I sincerely hope not. Tim Farrell

More On Horseshoe Crabs

Dear Editor: (A letter to Timothy Burke, author of Horseshoe Crab – Our Ancient Neighbors) Dear Mr. Burke, After thoroughly analyzing your article “Horseshoe Crabs our Ancient Neighbors” and comparing it to my knowledge as a Discovery Guide at the New York Aquarium, I developed a minor solution to preserving such interesting animals: educating people on ways to handle horseshoe crabs without hurting them. Growing up in Rockaway I have enjoyed observing horseshoe crabs along the shoreline. However, I and many other Rockaway residents would often face confusion when it comes to handling them. Mistakenly we harm horseshoe crabs even when we have good intensions. For example, if you see a horseshoe crab wash up on the beach you want to instinctually help it. But how? From experience I can confidently say that most people grab the animal by the telson (tail). This is a mistake!!! The telson (tail)

happens to be the most delicate bone in their bodies. It is also the most important! It is an essential tool that is used for flipping themselves over to avoid becoming prey. By damaging the telson the horseshoe crab can become an easy target for predators. The telson is also used as a steering wheel when it comes to direction so the horseshoe crab is less likely to beach itself. By teaching our neighbors to hold the crabs by the front of the shell and carefully place it in the water we can save many animals. In addition, if you find a beached horseshoe crab it is most likely mating and therefore it would be best to leave it: unless it is flipped over in which case you should return it to the water

right ways up. Furthermore, horseshoe crabs have a total of 14 eyes! (2 visible and 12 being microscopic) By holding them by their front shell it is almost guaranteed you will not harm any of their eyes. Although this does not change the drastic decline in population, these simple tips can help. Think of how many we can save. Even if only 2 people follow these tips they could save many lives. What if the horseshoe crabs they saved were a male and a female? Suppose they mate and this cycle continues? By saving only 2wo lives think of how many more horseshoe crabs could be created. Rogers Sold; McMahons To Add Hotel Continued from page 3

says the corner will stay the same for the most part. “We’re not going to do a crazy change to Rogers. The name is not changing. We’ll add new air conditioning, new bathrooms, maybe some new furniture and hope to open a kitchen there, but we’re really going to focus on the hotel portion upstairs. My wife has a good eye to do something nice and we’re working with local architects in the neighborhood. When the Rockaway Times first broke the news of Rogers being sold on social media, many said they hope longtime bartender Brendan Jones will stick around. According to McMahon, Jones, who has worked at Rogers for 27 years, as well as the rest of the staff, won’t be going anywhere. “Everybody is staying, he said, adding that he plans to work with the staff through the transition. “I’ve already sat down with the staff and asked them their opinions and we’re going to meet again so I can ask them for their input and what they think people want and need. We want to work with the neighborhood. Rogers is known for the best Guinness in Rockaway, the cheapest drinks. It’s the Cheers of Rockaway. They’ve been there for 97 years in the building and we’re looking forward to celebrating the hundredth anniversary as Rogers. McMahon says the hotel construction will work around the current businesses on the corner, like Kim’s Restaurant and the corner deli. “Nothing will be closing. They all do so good, why would we close them? We’re not going to push the tenants out or raise rent. The hotel will be upstairs and will have

its own entrance on the boulevard. There will be upscale, modern rooms with WiFi and the works. We want it to operate 12 months a year for beach guests or wedding parties. We want to be there for all of it, McMahon said, adding that it will be an upscale boutique hotel with rooms available for rent at a reasonable price. The current upstairs space will make it possible for 28 rooms to be built. McMahon also owns the large building that was the Rockaway Diner on Beach 116th Street, which he says he has plans for as well, but wouldn’t go into details. Overall, he hopes to make positive changes to the busy shopping corridor. “People say they won’t go to 116th Street. It’s gotten such a bad rap for so long. We just want to upgrade it so people will come here. There’s been a lot of movement here since Sandy. They had the Children’s Festival and we have the Oyster Festival coming. It’s only a matter of time since 116th comes back. We’ll be bringing something new. All it takes is one or two people to bring something new and change the block. We live in the neighborhood. We like the neighborhood. We want to see good things happen here. There is no set timeline for the changes, but Rich Rogers knows the McMahon’s will do a good job with his family’s property. “A lot of work and a lot of time were invested in this place. I’ve met so many nice people here, from the customers to the employees, Rogers said. “It’s been a lot of fun, but I think Rockaway is on a big upswing and this is going to help a lot, I’m confident of that.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun For a Cause On Sunday, August 23, about 40 women participated in the 6th Annual Ponytail Trail, and had some summer fun while raising awareness for Ataxia. As a spinoff of the male equivalent Moustache Bash, the Ponytail Trail is an all-female pub-crawl by bike, which raises awareness for a cause. This year, the girls rode for ataxia awareness in honor of a young local woman named Erin. Ataxia is neurological disorder that breaks down the normal pathways of the brain. As it progresses, the person with the disease loses muscle control and simple tasks like picking things up, walking, speak-

ing and understanding things, becomes difficult. Erin is diagnosed with Cerebellar ataxia. There are little to no treatments available. Erin started experiencing symptoms at age 23 and was diagnosed at age 25. Now at age 31, she is wheelchair bound and requires 24-hour care. Erin met the girls at Jameson’s, the kickoff spot for the tour, and donations from each participant went toward the cause. Donning pink tie-dye t-shirts and riding a bike, each participant made stops at The Wharf, Kerry Hills, Brendan’s Bar, Caracas and Healy’s for some Sunday fun.

RTC’s Little Shop = Big Hit! The Rockaway Theatre Company has another major hit on its fronds with the sold out opening of Little Shop of Horrors at the Post Theater this past weekend. The Horatio Alger tale of a poor orphan working in a broken-down florist shop on Skid Row, USA, who achieves wealth and success by discovering a new breed of plantlife is artfully brought to life by RTC directors Susan Warren Corning and John Gilleece. Scenic Engineer Tony Homsey once again has created an amaz-

characters, Audrey and Seymour, Renee Steadman, Tenna Torres and Jannicke Steadman-Charles as the singing street urchins, Crystal, Chiffon and Ronette, respectively, and that of Kyle Benoit-Cartier from deep inside Audrey II, the man-eating plant. However, if you do not reserve a seat immediately, you will probably not have the opportunity to experience this phenomenal production as there are only four performances left (Aug. 27, 28, 29 at 8PM & Aug. 30 at 2pm) and they

are all very close to being sold out. Call the RTC hotline now at 718-374-6400 or go online to www. rockawaytheatrecompany.org and make your reservation now.

Don’t let yourself be closed out. See it tonight! Please Note- Theater management requests that you do not feed the plant.

ing moving set, designed by Drew Woodbridge who also did lighting design. The awesome AshmanMenken score rocks the house under the baton of RTC veteran music director Jeffrey Arzberger, who states, “I am very proud of this production. We have assembled some of the best voices ever heard in any theater for this cast.” Some of these glorious voices include those of Rheanna Flemons and Donald Gormanly as lead

Wants YES To LNG

Dear Editor: (Sent to the Governor) Dear Governor Cuomo: Please approve Port Ambrose. Cheap, clean and green natural gas is a far, far better energy alternative that crude oil. The ‘Bayway Refinery’ is dirty, inefficient and old (built by John D himself over one hundred years ago); while Ambrose will – 20 miles offshore - resolve NYC’s bottleneck for natural gas deliveries simply and efficiently. Nobody in America, Governor Cuomo, heats with heating oil these days and stores their energy in their basements….except, of course, us - in New York and New England. Rockaway has gone through a lot these days with the AA Plane Crash; the horrible – almost unthinkable – losses from Sept 11th; and then the destruction from ‘Sandy’. People here – naturally – are on edge…especially when so much of the south shore of Long Island, the Connecticut shoreline and the Jersey Shore have been completely rebuilt while

Summer is drawing to an end; prepare your home for the cold weather before it sets in. There are a lot of things you can do to prepare your home for the cold winter. We already covered a few of those things in past articles. This week we are going to focus on your foundation and siding. Let’s work from the bottom up. If you have an unfinished basement, walk around and check for cracks, watermarks or sand/dirt lines. Be sure to check all walls, the floors and pay close attention to the corners where they meet. Most cracks you will see are going to be minor and can be sealed with a concrete sealer that comes in a tube (like caulk). For large cracks you should call someone in to determine the repairs needed. Any place where you see water, which may be seeping in, should be painted with DryLok concrete sealer and waterproofer. Now take a walk around the outside. If you can see the foundation wall, check it just like you did in the basement. Living by the beach may be great, but the salty moisture causes havoc with concrete over time. A lot of foundations have a stucco coat-

Rockaway, relying on NYC Agencies like Parks and EDC and Federal Agencies like FEMA, fumble on incomplete. So, many here are skeptical of this offshore site proposal, as well. I am not…these offshore transfer stations are time-tested around the world…and I sincerely hope that after deliberate study you and your staff will likewise reach the conclusion that Port Ambrose is an energy infrastructure improvement that New York desperately needs. Certainly solar energy will, I expect, be America’s long-term solution to our energy needs, but energy production with natural gas is a clean and green intermediate step – not crude oil, not wind. Utilities across the US are tearing down their antiquated crude processing plants in favor of gas…but not New York – simply because we have no assured and sufficient and abundant supplies. Port Ambrose will assure a ready, steady, clean and cheap supply of energy. Please Approve Port Ambrose, Governor Cuomo. Peter Stubben

ing on the outside. Any loose stucco should be removed and the remaining stucco should be sealed with the DryLok. Now walk around and look at your siding. Check for any cracks, holes and/or openings of any kind. Look at where your cable wires go through the siding. A lot of times the silicone around the wire can be gone over. Most minor cracks and holes in siding can be sealed with a clear silicone (not caulk). Larger cracks and/or holes may require you calling someone in to look it over. Don’t forget to check where aluminum capping (around windows, doors, etc.) meet the siding. The capping should be sealed to prevent water from getting behind it and freezing during the winter. If your home has only minor repairs needed, that is great. But if the cracks, openings or holes are big, don’t take it upon yourself to make the repair, call someone in to do the repair. Water getting behind siding and freezing can cause more damage than you may think. Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com

Diary Of A Fat Man By Bruce Bernfeld

One of my earliest childhood memories was going with my parents to an Italian restaurant on Broadway in Washington Heights where I lived the first seven years of my life. I vividly remember that if I finished my plate I was given a shiny gold star sticker on a little square of white paper, much like the reward kids got at school. I was also told I was now a member of the “Clean Plate Club.” This happened well over 60 years ago but I can still vividly recall the feelings of approval and accomplishment!! (Even though I probably only went there only two or three times). I bet you can guess where I am going with this!! Eating habits that are learned and begin early in childhood can affect you decades later and cause a myriad of problems. One of those problems is overeating and obesity. We sure don’t want to get fat and walk around uncomfortable and self-conscious, so we must be doing it for other reasons. Many eating related problems we have when we grow older are directly linked to behaviors that were taught to us at an early age. It’s common for parents to offer a “special”—and often unhealthy—

Page 29

THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 2015

food as a reward for good behavior. They may also withhold those treats as a means of punishment. Using food as a reward or as a punishment, however, can undermine the healthy eating habits that parents should be teaching their children. Giving sweets, or soda as a reward often leads to children overeating foods that are high in sugar, fat, and empty calories. Worse, it interferes with kids’ natural ability to regulate their eating, and it encourages them to eat when they’re not hungry to reward themselves. And guess what? I learned that and well over half a century later I am still using food as a reward!! Being told that you can indulge in foods that are bad for you as a reward for doing something good sends a mixed message. You start associating unhealthy foods with certain emotions. When you feel good about yourself, for instance, it’s okay to reach for a sweet. In addition, food given as a reward can lead to an unhealthy emotional connection between eating certain foods and feeling good. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, kids may use food to avoid feelings or situations that are difficult for them to handle. Eating because they’re bored or stressed can cause children

to feel guilty or remorseful. Many of us struggling with eating and weight often see food as a reward for our hard work and stressful life. In fact, nights, when the busy day is finally done, seem to be the toughest. After dinner, we find ourselves back at the fridge often grazing all night. It’s understandable that we want to ease our children’s bad feelings. Offering favorite foods to a child is tempting but it teaches them the wrong message – that food can cover up difficult feelings. Food only temporarily makes kids feel better and it adds a new problem of potentially being overweight. If you are not careful your little boy or girl may grow up working for

someone like Kevin Boyle and baring their souls weekly in a column titled: DIARY OF A FAT MAN!! (or WOMAN!!) Do you want that??

Italian Eggplant Gnocchi Bake By Sharon Feldman

Recipe Courtesy of Food Network Kitchen Ingredients: **12 ounces frozen or fresh plain gnocchi 1-1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 medium white onion, diced Kosher salt **2 small Italian eggplant (about 1 pound), diced 1-1/4 cups store-bought roasted garlic marinara sauce Ÿ teaspoon crushed red pepper **1-1/2 ounces shredded provolone Sprigs of fresh basil or oregano, for garnish, optional Directions: Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Bring large pot of water to boil. Add the gnocchi to the boiling water and cook according to the package directions, drain, reserving ½ cup of the cooking liquid. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large

nonstick skillet over medium high heat. Add the onions and 1/8 teaspoon salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the eggplant and cook, stirring occasionally, until the eggplant is very soft and the onions are golden brown, 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat. Add the gnocchi, reserved cooking liquid, marinara sauce and red pepper flakes to the skillet with the eggplant mixture and stir to combine. Transfer the eggplant –gnocchi mixture to a 9 inch oval or square baking dish. Sprinkle with provolone. Bake on the top oven rack until hot and bubbling and the cheese turns golden, about 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes. Garnish with the fresh basil sprigs, if using, and serve. ** I used grated smoked cheddar ;** Baby potato gnocchi ** Baby purple and white eggplants

Ideas for

By Rick Horan It’s not easy to be first but Rockaway’s west-end State Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder has stepped up to be the first elected official to respond to the transportation questions posed in this column a couple of weeks ago. Phil took time out of his busy schedule to submit answers to some of the questions in writing and others over a 30 minute phone conversation. Here’s what he had to say…(responses have been paraphrased and condensed for space reasons) Phil Goldfeder on Transportation Issues Important to Rockaway and Broad Channel… s 3ELECT "US 3ERVICE 3"3 ON Woodhaven Blvd and Cross Bay Blvd? Of course I like the goal of speeding up bus service but have no faith that it will actually work. I haven’t made up my mind on SBS as yet. s 1UEENS2AIL /LD 2OCKAWAY Beach Line)? The rail line, recently rebranded as the QueensRail, would create true intraborough connectivity, improve the commutes for hundreds of thousands of Queens families, and also help improve the environment by taking countless cars off our roadways. In fact, a study by the Queens College Urban Studies Department has demonstrated that reactivation could serve as many as a quarter of a million commuters a day. s 6ISION :ERO AND -0( #ITY Speed limit I voted against authorizing the 25 MPH in NYC. Regarding Vision Zero, reducing pedestrian deaths to zero is a worthwhile goal but many of the components of this plan don’t seem to have our community’s best interests in mind. s 4RAFl C #ALMING REMOVING lanes, etc.) All you have to do is try to navigate around the streets of Rockaway, especially on a busy weekend to know that we need more roads, not less. s 4HE USE OF 3PEED #AMERAS IN UNMARKED 3CHOOL :ONES I believe that hidden speed cameras help slow cars down and therefore do not favor signs warning drivers of their presence. I do however believe that students and drivers would benefit from signs that clearly indicate they are approaching a school zone. s 2OCKAWAY &ERRY n HOW CAN WE prevent this from being a political football The way we can ensure that the ferry is here to stay is to invest in hard infrastructure. Rockaway deserves a firstclass ferry terminal, not a temporarily dock that can be removed overnight. s #ROSS "AY "RIDGE 4OLLS n 7HY are they still there? Every year I have to fight to keep the Rockaway/Broad Channel Resident Rebate alive. This amounts to a $4 million State subsidy to the MTA to offset the lost revenue from the tolls they

Page 31

THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 2015

NYS Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder - On the Record would otherwise collect. But we shouldn’t stop there. I have proposed extending this rebate to all Queens residents. The Cross Bay Bridge toll is the only intra-county toll in the state. No resident of Queens should have to pay a toll just to drive within their own borough. I am committed of improving transportation access and ending the toll on the Cross Bay Bridge. I believed then (and still do) that charging people to come to Rockaway discourages visitors to our beaches, increases the operating costs for local small businesses, and isolates our neighborhoods from the rest of the city. s 0ROPOSED %AST 2IVER #ROSSING Tolls and Congestion Pricing in NYC? I’ve met several times with the MOVE NY people. I am concerned that this plan will end up being a tax on Queens’ residents that commute by car into Manhattan, which in turn would primarily fund transportation improvements in Manhattan that will provide little day-to-day benefit to our families I am opposed to these new tolls unless the revenue is spent on local transportation, such as the ferry and QueensRail, and that tolls at the Cross Bay, Marine Parkway and other outer-borough bridges are eliminated. s $OES THE -AYOR HAVE TOO MUCH power regarding transportation policy and funding? I don’t think so. I like the fact that one person is accountable for DOT. That’s one of the thing’s wrong with the MTA, no one person is responsible, zero accountability. s (OW SHOULD THE -4! CAPITAL budget gap be closed? Before we talk about increasing fares or tolls we need to cut the fat at MTA. There’s simply too much bureaucracy and not enough transparency. That’s part of the reason there’s such a shortfall in the capital budget, it’s just a black hole for money. s 7HAT TRANSPORTATION IMPROVE MENT FOR 2OCKAWAY YOU ARE MOST PROUD of? One of my first achievements as Assemblyman was to restore the residency rebate program that reimburses EZPass charges for Rockaway and Broad Channel residents who use the Cross Bay Bridge. I’m proud to have kept this program going year after year, saving families hundreds of dollars annually on tolls. s 7HAT IS YOUR BIG IDEA TO IM PROVE 2OCKAWAY TRANSPORTATION GOING forward? Think long term, if not for ourselves but for our children and for our children’s children. This means investing in hard transportation Infrastructure like QueensRail and a ferry terminal. Thanks Phil! Next week we will hear from the MTA. Got an idea for Smarter Transportation? Send your 500 word article to: RickHoran@SmarterStreets.org

DOC The Cost of Drugs By Peter Galvin, MD

Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com

Recently the Daily News had an editorial critical of the manufacturer of the drug Namenda, which is used to slow the worsening of dementia in Alzheimer’s patients. It seems that the manufacturer had applied for a new patent for a long-acting version of the drug. Their plan was to remove the regular formulation of the drug from the market and replace it with the long-acting version. The regular version was scheduled to go off patent this year. By making only the long-acting version available the manufacturer would both reap huge profits and would prevent generic versions of the regular version from being made (generic drugs may only be made after the patent on the branded version expires, provided the branded version is still available). This is called “pay-for-delay” and unfortunately it happens more often than most people know. George W. Merck, onetime president of Merck & Co., once said “Medicine is for the people. It is not for the profits”. Unfortunately most pharmaceutical companies today do not live by that credo. Nowhere is this more true than in the drugs used to treat cancer. Since there is little to no pricing controls in the U.S. drug manufacturers may charge pretty much whatever they please. Drugs stay on patent for years which prevents generic versions from being made and when patents are set to expire many companies make minor adjustments in formulations or uses to keep the patent active. In ad-

dition their representatives try to convince doctors that the patented versions are better for the patient. So what is the result of this strategy you ask? In 2012 the average cost of cancer treatment drugs in the U.S. was $100,000 per year. Before the year 2000 that annual cost was $5000 to $10,000. In addition from 2000 to 2012 the average U.S family income dropped by 8 percent. Assuming the average co-pay for drugs at 20 percent to 30 percent that means the average patient would have out-of-pocket costs of $20,000 to $30,000 per year. And that’s just for the medication. The Canadian government’s Patented Medicine Prices Review Board estimates that U.S. consumers pay 100% more for patented medicines than consumers in other countries. Novartis makes the drug imatinib which was priced at $132,000 per year in 2014. The same drug in Canada is $46,000 and in Mexico $29,000. Novartis recently used a “pay-for-delay” strategy to delay the introduction of generic versions from July 2015 to February 2016. This delay is estimated to cost US consumers and the health care system at least a half a billion dollars. While I am no fan of increased governmental controls in our lives it is clear that something needs to be done and done soon. At a minimum Medicare and Medicaid need to institute price controls. Maybe we should follow the Canadian example. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 2015

AHOY ROCKAWAY ! Greetings anglers (and non-anglers), welcome to the last few days of August. Knowing how your environment works is important, especially if you live near the ocean. As most of you already know, the tide and moon are directly related. The gravitational pull of the moon (and sun) on the Earth’s oceans dictates how our local tides will run (other tidal influences are the wind, and barometric pressure). This August 29, 2015 there will be what is called a “super moon. This is a full moon that occurs during a time of year called “Perigee (the time of year when the moon is closest to the Earth). It is one of three “Super Moons still due to arrive in 2015 (the last three super moons were

in Jan., Feb., and March 2015). The next “Super moon (after this Saturday’s on August 29) will be on Sept. 28 (the most super of the three super moons left this year). The very last “Super Moon for 2015 will occur on October 28. Why is this important? Besides being really cool to observe, we can expect the local tides to run higher and lower than normal during these moons. Expect ocean, bay, and channel currents to run stronger as well (especially for the next few days right after one of these “super moons) so you might want to throw an extra “spring line on your boat at the dock, and use EXTRA caution when fishing, or working around the bay, channel,

or ocean. The standard weather for any special nighttime celestial event over Long Island is over-cast, but sometimes you can get lucky and see “Luna if it’s clear out that night (hint, call The Wharf now for reservations). With local water temperatures approaching the same as bath water, the striped bass seem to be scarce around the bay area, they even seem to be scarce around the beach area as well. The fluke fishing has not changed much. There are still plenty of “shorts (under 18.5) with very few “keepers in the mix. Porgies are in and around the jetties and other under water structures such as docks and piers looking for offerings of worms and clams. Blue Claw crabs continue their march into the back bays and piers. Snappers (baby blue fish) are way up in the back creeks especially at high tide chasing spearing, and there are lots of them. We checked in with our local stations, and here’s what they had to report: Tom’s Wave service station Bait & Tackle Rockaway Park: Tom reports a slow week with no bass action near the shop or in the surf. Tom did say that there are plenty of porgies and snappers available off the sea wall though. Big Ron’s bait and tackle in Howard Beach: We spoke with Big Ron’s and they said that it was a pretty slow week due to the warm

ProHealth Excellence Urgent Care Convenience

weather. One angler did manage to catch a Cownose ray and return it safely back to water. A true sportsman and a brave angler, as cownose rays can sting. The fluke fishing is slow in the back bays near the Atlantic Beach bridge and Beach 9th Street. Shawn McShane of Lynbrook fished all the way out to the Cholera Banks on Sunday and reports short fluke (under 18.5) with none taken. Well, that’s it anglers (and nonanglers), be alert for the super moon coming up this weekend on Saturday, August 29.

Looking for a good place to eat? Try The Restaurant in Rockaway Beach at 8605 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. It’s in the shopping center a few doors down from Key Food. The Restaurant is a down home place to eat. Serving delicious American food, breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes all day from opening to closing. If you come in to eat at 6 a.m. and you order a cheeseburger, that is fine; if you order breakfast a 2 p.m. that is fine, too! It’s an all day menu. The Restaurant has great service, tasty food and yummy milkshakes. It’s no wonder why this place has been in business for so many years. Owners of The Restaurant, husband and wife Peter and Cathy Plevritis, originally owned a Manhattan location of The Restaurant before moving the business to Rockaway Beach 24 years ago in 1991. They decided to carry the perfectly descriptive name of the restaurant over to the new location. The Restaurant is a family-run business. When you visit The Restaurant you can find Peter in the kitchen cooking food, working as head chef and Cathy working at the register and counter. Long-time, loyal customers are part of the fabric of The Restaurant. Some customers have been visiting since they were children and are now adults. On a recent visit, a customer said cheerily, “I’ve been coming here for over 20 years now.” Some customers have become so close to Cathy and her family that they call her mommy or Mrs. Cathy. This gives you an idea of how welcoming and inviting the owners and staff make you feel when you are visiting The Restaurant. You aren’t just a customer; you’re family. Rockaway resident Tina Daniels, another loyal customer, walked in and said “Cathy, I’ll take my usual.” Tina was quick to praise. “The food here is excellent, there’s good company, prompt delivery. I’ve been coming here since I can remember.” One of the waitresses, Sarah Gearin has been working at The Restaurant for more than five years now and says, “We’re just one big happy family

and I love working here.” Other staff seem to feel the same as Gearin. Serving hundreds of customers per week in-house, and with a large number of deliveries, it takes years of experience to keep up with the demand of customers and supplies that need to be ordered. The Restaurant is a place where you can come eat, relax and enjoy good American food with family and friends or just grab a bite to eat alone. Most popular dishes at The Restaurant are their pancakes, grits, omelets, oatmeal or anything else for breakfast. After Superstorm Sandy hit the

area The Restaurant was closed for seven months. It was during this time when Cathy and Peter wondered if they should re-open for business. After being closed for seven months they decided to re-open and had to rebuild everything. I believe Cathy and her family made the right decision to re-open and rebuild. It’s like a second home to so many who have frequented The Restaurant and a welcoming delight for newcomers. When I asked Cathy what’s most challenging about running a restaurant she said, “other than getting up at early at 4 a.m. in the morning there’s nothing challenging because I love what I do.” If you would like more information about The Restaurant please visit www.rockawayrestaurant.com or call 718-634-5809. (Octavia Willis is an intern at The Rockaway Times. She is attending the College of Staten Island and lives in Arverne).

ON THE ENVIRONMENT Beware Of What We Use

000000

Page 44

By Joan Flynn One day last week while I was sitting quietly on my porch, three young girls walked by. I overheard one say to the others, “Ugh! I wish she would cut down these flowers. I am afraid of the butterflies.” The remark sounded comical to me, but upon consideration I found it incredibly sad. There are so many things in a young girl’s life that can actually do them great harm. Butterflies are not among them. If you visit the Environmental Working Group’s website you will see that so many “beauty” products that are used by young and old alike are potentially harmful to your health. Did you know that with the exception of color additives and a few prohibited substances, cosmetics companies may use any ingredient or raw material in their products without government review or approval (FDA 2005.)? Is the cosmetic industry irresponsible in their choices? Well, yes, according to the Environmental Working Group. So why would that be a problem? Biomonitoring studies have found that cosmetics ingredients – such as phthalate plasticizers, paraben preservatives, the pesticide triclosan, synthetic musks and sunscreen ingredients – are common pollutants in the bodies of men, women and children. Many of these chemicals are potential hormone disruptors (Gray 1986, Schreurs 2004, Gomez 2005, Veldhoen 2006.) Cosmetics frequently contain enhancers that allow ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin. Studies have found health problems in people exposed to common fragrance and sunscreen ingredients, including increased risk of sperm damage, feminization of the male reproductive system and low birth weight in girls (Duty 2003, Hauser 2007, Swan 2005, Wolff 2008.) Federal law allows companies to leave some chemical ingredients off their product labels, including

those considered to be trade secrets, such as components of fragrance and nanomaterials (FDA 2011.) Fragrance may include any number of the industry’s 3,100 stock chemicals (IFRA 2010), none of which are required to be listed on labels. Tests of fragrance ingredients have found an average of 14 hidden compounds per formulation, including ingredients linked to hormone disruption and sperm damage (EWG & CSC 2010.) Unfortunately, beauty products are not the only place many of these harmful chemicals are found. Look at your household cleaning products. We assume they are safe. But, in fact, many popular household cleaners are dangerously toxic. The average household contains about 62 toxic chemicals, say environmental experts. We’re exposed to them routinely – from the phthalates in synthetic fragrances to the noxious fumes in oven cleaners. Ingredients in common household products have been linked to asthma, cancer, reproductive disorders, hormone disruption and neurotoxicity. According to the Environmental Working Group’s study, 53 percent of cleaning products they reviewed contained lung-harming ingredients. In addition, well-known carcinogens like formaldehyde and chloroform may be released into the air when using certain cleaning products. Because we are exposed to so many chemicals each day (which may have individual and synergistic effects on the body), we need to be informed about how the products that we use on a daily basis are affecting our health. The ‘mainstream’ media seldom reports on this issue. We need groups like The Environmental Working Group to keep us informed. And I am sure that the folks there would agree with me that flowers and butterflies are quite safe.

Finn Kinsella led with 20 points while brother Rory added 12. Teddy Stathis tossed in 10 while handling the playmaking responsibilities. Shane Lee led We R Hoops with 17. The rest of the cast for Richie George’s Boarders team is Will Rosa, Brendan Vasquez, Joe Burns, and Charlie ‘Buzzer Beater Bostwick, who propelled the team into the final with a memorable shot to win the semifinals the night before. The Men’s Open championship followed with Kennedy’s Restaurant getting off to a quick start and a 30-17 halftime lead. Rock Park All-Stars tried to counter in the second half, going to their bread and butter Keith Tilley, who scored 18 of his 25 after intermission. However, Ryan Woerner’s squad continued to run its precision offense with screen and rolls and backdoor cuts and never let Rock Park threaten. Charlie Marquardt was on fire with 25 and Kevin Crockett was perfect from the foul line scoring 11 of his 18 from there without miss-
