Six Years of Winning!
KATIE McFADDEN SCOOPS UP FOUR AWARDS IN NYPA CONTEST Six years in business, six years of winning awards. The Rockaway Times is proud to announce it is an award-winning newspaper for the sixth year in a row. Our publication scooped up four awards in the New York Press Association’s 2019 Better Newspaper Contest. NYPA typically announces the winners of the annual con-
test during a conference in the spring. This year’s conference was canceled due to coronavirus, so instead, NYPA put together a video presentation and announced the award winners virtually on Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21. This year, our editor Katie McFadden, already an award-winning writer, scooped up her
very first photography awards! In the Feature Photo category (Division 2), the judges liked Katie’s photos so much, that she won two awards in the same category. The first was Second Place for a series of photos from the centennial celebration of the first transatlantic flight. In their comments, the judges wrote, “Capturing the essence

mitic writings were scrawled on the beach over Labor Day Weekend. In comments, the judges wrote, “A good composition delivering the message without the mongers.” Katie McFadden also scooped up another photography award for the Art Photo category (Division 1). This one may be a more familiar, as Katie has recreated it at least for three or four years—her annual New Year’s cover photo on the beach featuring the tide wiping out the old year, as we welcome in the new one. Last year’s photo had an extra bit of flare with a sunrise filling the sky with color, which the judges recognized. They said, “I think this is so beautiful. Not only is the picture breathtaking, the sun reflecting on Dawn of a New Decade looks like the colors are literally blending. Brilliant. And the foamy water makes me want to put my feet right in. This should be in a frame!”

Katie took second place for this photo. Finally, Katie’s quick puns in some headlines earned her yet another award for headline writing. This year she took Third Place for a set of headlines that included: “That Lime was a Lemon” on a story about a Lime bike that went up in flames; “Harbor Light Gets Stuck on an Elevator” for a story about the Harbor Light waiting on an elevator inspection to take place before opening and “Army Corps Lends a Helping Sand,” about the Army Corps conducting another sand replenishment project. The judges said, “All are clever and appropriate, drawing the reader into the story.” Katie also won a headline writing award in the 2017 contest. The Rockaway Times is expected to receive certificates for each award. We look forward to hopefully attending next year’s NYPA convention in person. From Friends Of Tribute Park: 9/11 MEMORIAL CEREMONY TO BE SCALED BACK Since its opening in 2005, Tribute Park has held a special place in the hearts of Rockaway residents. It has been a beautiful setting to remember family, friends, and neighbors who went to work on September 11, 2001 and didn’t return home. Each year since, we have held a ceremony honoring those lost that day. The park will reopen this September 11, after extensive repairs, by the NYC Parks Department, due to damage caused by Superstorm Sandy. Our ceremony this year will have to be scaled back because of NYC guidelines for outdoor gatherings. We have reduced the number of participants to ensure social distancing, and are requiring everyone who comes to wear masks. We have also adjusted some of the usual parts
of the service. For example, we will pre-position the roses on the compass mosaic, rather than have families and friends walk up and place them there, to reduce personal contact. We ask for your understanding about the scaledback nature of the ceremony this year. Over the years, large numbers of family members and friends have attended. We of course welcome family members, but are asking families to limit the number who attend. We will have the park open for the entire day to allow people who do not attend the ceremony to visit when it will be less crowded. Please be assured that we plan to resume with a more extensive ceremony next year for the 20th anniversary, and all will be welcomed then.

The Riis Lease Is Up
Riis Park Beach Bazaar (RPBB) immediately helped revitalize Riis Park when it secured a lease to run the concessions at the park that offered little to visitors for decades. That was five years ago. Since then, the group has offered a wide variety or food vendors, beach rental equipment, live entertainment and even year round indoor dining (in pre-Covid times). Many locals have found employment with the company as well. And now the lease is up. The five-year lease is due to expire November 1, just a couple of months from now. The lease does not have a renewal clause and NPS says the “park plans to release a competitive solicitation in early Fall 2020, to lease facilities at Riis for similar purposes.” RPBB and its vendors have had a difficult season with pandemic restrictions while adhering to the NPS policy of zero tolerance for infractions.
WEEKLY SPECIALS
One vendor expressed frustration and anger on Facebook after a weekend crowd with no permit faced no gathering restrictions and left behind mountains of trash. The vendor will close for the season after September 7. With the pandemic, uncertainty is the norm these days and so is the future of RPBB at Riis. As for the upcoming solicitation, NPS said, “We welcome RPBB to submit a proposal in connection with that opportunity. We are required by law/regulation to make this a competitive opportunity.”

By Katie McFadden
It’s time to get your grind on! After many years of consistent hard work, a dream skate park has become a reality. The long-awaited revamped Rockaway Beach Skate Park is now open. Skaters of all ages and races took to the skate park as the Beach 92nd Street entrance was opened on Friday, August 21. With smiles on their faces, they explored each ledge, dip, curb and grind rail as they tried out the new park for the first time. The skate park is the result of many years of perseverance by Rockaway locals who were determined to bring the perfect place for skaters to gather on the middle of the peninsula. Like many things in Rockaway, the original Rockaway Beach Skate Park fell victim to Hurricane Sandy, with the metal elements completely wiped out by the storm in 2012. For the skating community, it was a huge loss. But locals didn’t let it wipe them out. Instead, they
came together to hold fundraisers to rebuild elements of the park, from ramps to a bowl, and maintain it year after year, but the temporary elements weren’t built to last in salt air. A permanent, concrete park was the answer. The efforts to make it a reality were spearheaded by Jimmy Dowd of St. James Clothing and those from Boarders Surf Shop. “We were kind of the gasoline to the whole vehicle to make it happen,” Dowd said. But they didn’t do it alone. Dowd credits
Pat Smith of Coda Skateboards, the late Tim Hill, Steve Rodriguez, Dennis Reen, Rockaway WISH and many other friends in the community who wanted to see Rockaway Beach get the park it deserved. With capital funding from the mayor’s office, the borough president and the federal government, the NYC Parks Department started to move forward plans to make a permanent park a reality back around 2015. Locals were heavily involved in discussions for the de-
sign. However, after many years of delays, construction did not begin until fall 2019. Concrete craftsmen, Spohn Ranch, were tasked with carrying out the build out and finished the main elements of the park before the expected December completion date. Last week, the results of many years of hard work were unveiled and made accessible to the community. Skaters are now welcome to explore the skate park’s main Continued on page 7

features including a snake run and a street plaza. Carefully designed, the skate park is configured to run from east to west, so there’s no cross traffic that could lead to collisions in the park, even when it’s crowded. As anticipation grew, and some eager skaters were jumping the fence to use the park before the official opening, the park was quickly inspected and the Beach 92nd Street was opened for access. However, finishing touches are still being done. While the skate park elements are complete, other entrances to the park remain closed as the contractors still need to complete a water fountain, a seating area and landscaping around the park. Dowd says he expects all of which to be finished within a month. Yet for now, local skaters will take what they can get. After so many years of advocating for a proper park, to see it open in any capacity is a huge deal to those who helped make it happen.
“We’ve been trying to get a real concrete park here for a solid 15 to 20 years. We finally achieved it through perseverance, not taking no for an answer and pushing to show how important a skate park is here for so many people,” Dowd said. “When they opened this park, it was magical. When I first got in there and rolled around, the main thing I thought about was how Rockaway Beach is now a legit surf and skateboard destination.”
To celebrate this, the skate park will become a big focus of the next Rockstock and Barrels festival, an event made possible by Dowd and Boarders, that brings focus to Rockaway as a surf and skate destination. “Rockstock will finally be able to hold a proper skate contest. We may finally be able to offer cash prizes. We didn’t have a lot of interest from sponsors to give us a cash purse for a contest before, but I think now that we have a real park, it will be a lot easier for sponsors to look
Page 7 at this and be willing to brand their names here and promote it so we can get some funding for the kids to win money in contests,” Dowd said. But for now, Dowd says locals are just happy to have a central location to skate. “Local kids are so pumped. Parents are stoked. It keeps kids out of trouble. Rockaway has two skate parks already, in Far Rockaway and in Bayswater, and now we don’t just have to go downtown. Anybody in Rockaway Beach, Rockaway Park or uptown has a place to go within a mile or two,” Dowd said. “Everyone is just really pumped that this is a reality now. The fight has been won. The demand had always been there, and we maintained that vibe of not taking no for an answer and Parks really listened to people on this and we have this park here that will make Rockaway even more desirable as a skate destination.” An official ribbon cutting for the park is expected sometime in the future. The Rockaway Times has moved. About 20 feet. We are now occupying the back office of the building at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive (the old Glider’s Gym and pre-Sandy, the old Dr. Rogoff ’s dentist office). Geoff Rawling just finished a mural of our new logo, on the second floor of the front of the building. Just look up to see his great work. ***** You can walk from Rockaway into Nassau County. That’s how close indoor restaurant options are. But you do have to leave the county of Queens. New York City remains the only area in the state that prohibits indoor dining, not even allowing 50 percent capacity. When do the mayor and governor explain what their definition of a flattened curve is? If people feel uncomfortable
dining indoors, they won’t and shouldn’t do it. The cooler weather will be here before we know it and an entire industry is at great risk. By the way, the governor’s office announced this past Monday that August 24 was the “17th Straight Day with Positivity Rate Below 1 Percent; and 0.66 Percent of Yesterday’s COVID-19 Tests were Positive.” ***** If you want to win editorial awards at the New York Press Association annual contest, it helps to have Katie McFadden doing the writing, reporting, picture taking and social media posting. For the sixth year in a row, The Rockaway Times won multiple awards at the prestigious newspaper competition and Katie’s the top reason why. Kudos to Katie! (And not bad, multiple awards for a free newspaper). ***** There are sure to be a lot of people vying for Eric Ulrich’s council seat next year. We expect Mike Scala and Lew Si-

Thirteen Blocks for Breonna Taylor Story and Photos By Katie McFadden
Thirteen blocks for March 13— the day Breonna Taylor, a 26-yearold EMT was shot dead in her home by officers of the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department. As people across the country continue to call for justice in her killing, in Rockaway, surfers took to the waves to bring attention to this call for justice in a peaceful paddle out. In the latest of several paddle out protests led by Lou Harris of Black Surfing Rockaway, the paddle out on the morning of Saturday, August 22, was dedicated to Breonna. A group of more than 100 surfers met on Beach 73rd Street for a paddle out that would go 13 blocks to Beach 86th Street. With wind as a factor, before the paddle out, Harris advised the crowd to take their time with the challenge and think of the reason they were doing it. “Thirteen blocks for Breonna. This is no race today. We’re going to go slow. We’re gonna think

Kwame LaBassiere, a fellow black surfer in Rockaway reiterated Harris’ sentiments. “As you take your breaths in, enjoy those breaths you’re able to take and think of Breonna Taylor, who was minding her business, asleep and all of a sudden, bang. It could happen to any one of us, anytime, anywhere, so just focus on that and be conscious of that
as you breathe, and the strength will come to you to finish the 13 blocks.” After they spoke, the participants paddled out into the water and began their trip uptown, as people holding signs on the beach, followed along. At Beach 86th Street, the group in the ocean formed a large circle as they said Breonna’s name and called for justice, while those on the sand did the same. The next paddle out, for Jacob Blake, will be heldon Saturday, September 5 at 9 a.m. on Beach 73rd Street. For more info, check out black_surfing_rockaway on Instagram.

Support on the Sea for Essential Workers On Saturday, August 22, a few local surfers took to the sea to thank our NYPD and the many essential workers who have carried us through the coronavirus crisis. A small group gathered on Beach 108th Street for a pad-
dle out to show the NYPD and other essential workers that Rockaway has their back. Rockaway resident and surfer Chris Sheridan helped to organize the event to “show the police, fire department, sanitation workers, teachers, healthcare workers, everyone that’s been getting beat up since Covid came in that we’re thankful for them, but especially the police.” Sheridan explained the main focus was police because, “They’ve been getting chewed up and it’s just not right and I want to make them aware that people in Rockaway care about them.” With a modest group of about 15 participants from young to old, Sheridan said, “I was hoping for a better turnout, but it is what it is.” United, on surfboard and paddleboards, the group paddled out into the ocean and formed a circle in a show of support for local heroes. Far Rockaway Colts Helps the Community Rise Story and Photos By Katie McFadden
“Together We Rise” was the theme of the Far Rockaway Colts’ community event on Friday, August 21. In a day of fun, family, and bridging the gap between police and community members, the Far Rockaway Colts proved just that. On Friday, the Far Rockaway Colts, an NYPD-led mentorship program, invited the community to the shopping center on Beach 86th Street for a day that included everything from rock climbing to basketball, boxing lessons, double dutch, resources, giveaways, dancing to DJ music, a barbecue, speeches by local elected officials and even a special NYPD helicopter flyby. Throughout the event, police officers interacted with everyone during each activity. As Detective Patrick Blanc, head coach of the Far Rockaway Colts, put it, “The goal of today’s event is to bridge the gap. A lot of times, we do different stuff in the Rockaways, but it’s not done on this side of Rockaway. From walking around the Hammels community, we’ve heard complaints that nothing is done here. So we thought it would be a great idea to do something here because this is not usually provided for the Hammels,” he said. And the turnout proved it was worth it. “We had three families almost shed tears when they learned that someone is finally doing something here. We’re trying to change the narrative. We’re coming together collectively to
try to make thing better for the community.” Many of the boys from the Far Rockaway Colts program were there and spoke to the ways the program has helped better themselves. “This program is really fun, the teachers are re-
ally nice. My grades were ones and threes and when I started doing the program, my grades started going up to fours and now I’m getting hundreds,” a boy named Anthony said to applause. “Whenever I need help with something, I call them
and they pick up. This program is very helpful. It helps you get better. It’s the best program for me.” To learn more about the Far Rockaway Colts, follow them on Facebook or Instagram. Photos by Katie McFadden.

A Conversation With a Cop: Officer Victor Boamah we would all walk in packs. One day on Mott, we were all walking and the cops came up to us. They pushed us to the wall, tossed us and patted us down. We asked them what this was for and they didn’t give us any explanation. They just disrespected us, some cursed us out and left.
By: Nicole Taylor-Lang
Disclaimer: In no way does Officer Boamah’s outlook reflect the NYPD organization or any other affiliated police organizations. This year has been a year for the books some would say, not just our country but for the world. From natural disasters to a pandemic and racial injustice, 2020 is not what anyone saw coming, to say the least. Protestors took to the streets after the death of a black Minneapolis man named George Floyd, whose name still remains central in protests. Floyd was killed by a police officer during an arrest back in May. His death sparked nationwide outrage and reignited a conservation that has been going on for years, and yet again, calls for change. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, which was formed in 2013 to fight against racial injustice and police brutality, led protests all around the country again this year, spreading chants of “no justice, no peace,” calling for police reform and even to defund the police. The movement and the issues at hand have brought out opinions on all sides and in some cases, have caused a divide. So I figured it was time to sit down and have an open conversation with someone who, as a police officer and a black man, has experience on both sides. I had the pleasure of meeting with Officer Boamah of the NYPD’s 100th Precinct in Rockaway Beach. As we spoke, I got to learn about Victor, how he became a police officer and his views on current events. Please note, his opinions and stories do not represent the NYPD as a whole, as they are his own. Boamah moved to the Rockaways from Ghana, West Africa when he was eight years old. A pillar for this community, Boamah runs his own nonprofit organization, Giving the Gift of Love Inc, and has served as
Q: I can see why you must have been conflicted about becoming a cop. So what are your thoughts with the BLM movement and George Floyd? A: What happened to George Floyd was bad and not acceptable. I believe everyone has the right to peaceful protest, I don’t see an issue with that. You have that right. People that are there to peaceful protest and want to see change, I applaud them. I truly get it. Things need to change. I know the climate that we are in, especially being a black police officer.
president of the 101st Precinct Council, acting as a bridge between the community and officers, until he decided to take it a step further and become an NYPD officer himself. Q: What year did you become a police Officer? A: I became a police officer in July of 2018. Q: When did you first think about becoming a police officer? A: When I was in college, my older brother suggested I should take the test. I wasn’t really thinking about being a cop, but it was his birthday and I wanted to do it for him. helping the community and working with kids so he thought Q: When did you get called to this would be a good opporthe NYPD? tunity for me. He said, “I see A: After I graduated college something in you that you don’t in 2013, I was working for the see.” So I finally took his advice. Then want to become a cop, so I was that was it, I started the process able to push it back. of becoming a cop. Q: So what ultimately made you decide to become a cop? A: I was President of the Community Council of the 101st Precinct at the time. We were having a community council meeting and Officer Kevin Campbell, who recently retired, was there. After the meeting, he and I were talking and he tells me, “you have to do this.” I told him there was nothing wrong with being a cop, but it wasn’t for me. He knew I was already

Q: What was your experience growing up with police officers in our community? A: That was one of the reasons it was hard for me to become a cop. Growing up as a black kid, I did not always have positive interactions. It always stood with me. Like what Maya Angelou said, “people will never forget how you made them feel.” I remember when I was in Far Rockaway High School, we would get out of school and
Q: How do you feel about the riots and looting? A: I think sometimes the message gets lost when people are not there to protest. They come with their own agendas. So as you can see, a criminal will take any opportunity to commit crimes. You have people that are there to loot and cause destruction. Those people are not protestors. Q: What about defunding the police? A: I think it would cost too much damage to the community. If a serious crime happens and you don’t have the personnel there to help or the equipment, it can make matters worse. Another thing, we have to be honest, we are not living in gated communities here in the city. People in wealthy areas that live in gated communities might feel safer but for the five boroughs, it is different. Defunding and abolishing the police is definitely not a good idea because criminals will rejoice. They will have a free for Continued on page 15

all. I do believe there needs to be a reform though from top to the bottom. Reform is gradually taking place and that is what I believe in. Q: What can help gap the bridge between the community and the police? A: Today in the 101st Precinct, there is a softball game between the kids and the police. It’s events like this that bring the whole community together. Also, one of my favorite events is the street clean up because you have the police and the community cleaning the streets together. It may be a little thing but it’s actually big because they are working together. I remember in that event, most of the participants were kids and I feel that it is very good to get the youth engaged at such an early age. It also helps to build trust. I believe in more community and police interactions. I know Covid has slowed down some
events but hopefully we can get the best that I can. I want to imthe okay soon to safely do these prove the community and poevents. lice relationship. Q: Anything would like the community to know about being a police officer? A: It’s always good to be kind and being kind goes along way. And to be a police officer, you have to be kind, fair and respectful. It is a very dangerous job and you have to be safe. Every day I go on patrol and do
Q: Is there anything else you would like the community to know about you? A: Having a negative interaction with a police officer when I was younger, to now becoming a cop, I was able to turn a negative interaction into something positive. That goes a long way. I could have been bitter
Page 15 about that whole situation. But now as a police officer, I can’t be everywhere at once but the areas I am in, I can make sure that doesn’t happen to anyone else. I want other youth to have a positive interaction that will stick with them. Boamah hopes for many more events to come, bringing our community together. Through Giving the Gift of Love inc., he is helping to do just that. When Covid hit our area hard, Boamah and other volunteers went around Rockaway giving out food. They will also be having a back to school event soon at which they will give out school supplies to kids and schools that are in need. In keeping with the desire of turning a negative into a positive, Boamah continues to help bridge that gap between officers and citizens, which at a time like this, could not be more important. If any other police officers would be interested in sitting down for a conversation on any topic, reach out to Nicole at: nicole.taylor.lang@gmail.com

New Low Dear Editor: We live on a barrier beach. At mean high water, our streets are at best, three to four feet above sea level. Anyone who has lived here for a while knows that we get street flooding at times of EJ Dionne might have more Rockaway Times t-shirts than any unusually high tides. NYC in one else we know. He made sure he packed this one on a quick its infinite wisdom is re-dogetaway to Maryland’s eastern shore. Well, we know one thing— ing Beach Channel Drive. EJ looks dapper when he’s rocking one of our tees! What I just found out, and
what many residents may not know, is that they are LOWERING BCD by seven to 10 inches! The project engineer knocked on my door a few days ago to tell me this. I told her that would cause more street flooding. She shrugged her shoulders. Oh, and she added that they would be removing half of my new driveway that I just installed last year because its end would be 7 to 10 inches higher than the new sidewalk. Plus, we will have no access to our driveway for at least two weekends. When I asked her where we are supposed to park our cars, her answer was another shoulder shrug. She said the city refused to give temporary parking placards to those who are displaced from their own driveways. Whoever designed this project knows nothing about Rockaway nor gives a damn about its citizens. Where are the people we elected to represent and protect us? Peter Galvin

NPS Responds To Riis Mess What a mess. Beth Hanning sent us these photos, we shared The Dropout’s post about it online and officials at Gateway said they’re on it: “The picnic at Jacob Riis Park that occurred on August 23, photos of which have been circulating on social media, was contrary to park rules and should not have been allowed to continue. Initial attempts to disband the group were unsuccessful; eventually the area was cleared by US Park Police with additional support from NYPD, leaving a large quantity of trash behind. “Additionally, there have been recent reports of illegal overnight use in the park, which currently closes at 9 p.m. These types of activities are not in keeping with the visitor experience the park seeks to provide, or what local community members should be expected to tolerate. “To address these concerns, the park will be implementing increased enforcement meas-
ures immediately, including increased checks of the picnic area to ensure small groups do not grow into large after-hours gatherings; sweeps of the Riis Park main parking lot after closure; more frequent checks of the boardwalk and beach areas during the hours of darkness to ensure unauthorized gatherings are not taking place out of public view; and a routine check of Riis Park each morn-
ing at daybreak to ensure any illegal activity obscured by darkness is addressed immediately the next morning. “The number of trash receptacles at the picnic area will also be increased to ensure adequate capacity is available in the busiest park areas. “We appreciate the commu-
nity’s willingness to share their concerns, and will continue to work on improving the situation. We encourage anyone who sees any illegal acts to report them immediately so that US Park Police can address the situation in progress. The number for park dispatch is (718) 354-4700.»

If Allowed, Bugalou Is Full Steam Ahead Bugalou Productions is proud to announce its lineup for Season 4. The live entertainment company, headed by Keith ‘Bugsy’ Goldberg, brings nationally recognized recording and performing artists to Rockaway venues. Past performers have included Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Max Weinberg of the E Street Band, John Sebastian of the Lovin’ Spoonful, and Felix Cavaliere of the Rascals, as well as Grammy recognized artists Joan Osborne and Larry Campbell. This season’s shows will all be at St. Camillus Springman Hall beginning on Friday, November 27 with Desert Highway plus Fools Night Out. This combination was scheduled for this past April before COVID-19 forced cancellation. Desert Highway is America’s premier tribute to The Eagles, and is making its second appearance in the series, following a successful debut in 2018. Fools Night Out is one
of Rockaway’s most popular local bands featuring Danny Moran and Mark Magliaro. On Friday, February 26, Real Young and Lazy Horse will move into the headliner’s slot after turning heads with their opening set for The THE BAND Band this past February. With anticipated performances in Rockaway cancelled this summer, everyone
will be in need of the high energy the band brings to classic Neil Young songs. Opening for Real Young will be Virgil Tinsley, a Toronto musician who has been making waves with his stunning renditions of Bob Dylan’s classic catalog. Saturday, April 17 will be the music of Chicago brought to life by Connecticut Transit Authority. This seven-piece
ensemble does an amazing job with the music from their greatest period, and will have everyone rocking. A $100 season pass for all three shows is now on sale. More than one hundred have been pre-sold through renewals from last season’s pass holders. Don’t miss this opportunity to join the musical fun and save some money. Passes can be ordered by email to bugaloumusic@gmail.com, with payment due between 9September 1 and October 1. Tickets for individual shows will go on sale on October 1 at www.bugaloumusic.com. All shows are contingent on the lifting of gathering restrictions and are subject to reschedule as a result. Bugalou is also looking to pursue the reschedule of June’s cancelled performance by Finnegan Blue, separately from the $100 package, provided we are able to hold all three currently scheduled shows. A Pain In The Neck
By Peter Galvin, MD
Spondylosis of the cervical spine, or neck bones, occurs in nearly everyone as we age. It is a condition where the cervical vertebrae and the discs and ligaments that support the vertebrae, degenerate and break down. When the discs degenerate, there is loss of the space between the vertebrae, sometimes causing pressure on and squeezing of the nerves that exit from the spinal cord. This condition can also be referred to as simply arthritis of the neck. The term spondylosis comes from the Greek word spondylos, meaning vertebra. It commonly begins about age 40 but can be seen as early as the first decade of life. Studies have shown that 80 to 90% of people have disc degeneration on MRI scans by age 50. Spondylosis should not be confused with spondylolisthesis, a con-
dition where a vertebra slips out of place in relation to the vertebra below it, although the cause of spondylolisthesis is often spondylosis. Most people with cervical spondylosis have no symptoms and are not aware that they have the condition. If symptoms do occur, they usually consist of neck pain and stiffness. When more severe symptoms occur, such as tingling or weakness of the hands, feet, arms, or legs, difficulty with balance or walking, or loss of bowel or bladder control, medical evaluation is necessary. Risk factors for spondylosis include age, occupation (those involving repetitive neck movements or working in an overhead environment), neck injuries, genetic factors, and smoking. Medical evaluation includes first ruling out other causes of neck pain such as a history
of cancer (especially breast, prostate, or lung) or a history of IV drug use, weakened immune system, fever, diabetes, or recent serious infections (a risk factor for spinal abscess). Provocative tests may be helpful in examining someone with neck pain, especially if it extends (radiates) to the shoulder, limb, or hand on one side. The Spurling test, in which the patient’s head is turned to the side of the pain, the neck is slightly extended (the patient looks up), and pressure is placed on the top of the head. If this causes or worsens the pain, radiculopathy (a pinched nerve in the neck) is suspected. In the shoulder-abduction test, the patient’s palm or forearm of the affected arm is placed on top of the head. If this relieves the pain, radiculopathy may be the cause of the pain. If spondylosis is suspected by the physical exam, it can
be confirmed by X Rays, MRI, CT scan, or myelogram (dye is injected into the spine) of the neck. Also, an EMG (electromyogram) or nerve conduction study may confirm a pinched nerve. Treatment may include NSAIDs (Motrin, naproxen), oral steroids, muscle relaxants, gabapentin or pregabalin (may reduce nerve pain), or antidepressants (useful to relieve chronic pain). Physical therapy is often helpful as well and is usually recommended. Surgery is rare and is reserved for those with severe, unrelieved symptoms. So, if you have chronic neck pain not caused by someone you know or live with, especially if the pain extends to one arm or hand, seek medical attention. Your doctor may be able to help. Coming Home to Yourself It’s been a long five months of being home and yet it is comforting to have a safe, loving home to live in. These past few months have been thought provoking for me in so many ways, as I am sure they have been for you. So many disappointments and losses and yet we have learned to cope and survive with so much less in our lives. Perhaps you have found your way home to yourself in a
very deep and healing way. If not, come with me on this journey called Life. Home is where is the heart is! We have heard this phrase many times and yet not everyone has a loving home to return to. My heart breaks for you and how I wish we all could live in a space that offers us love and security. My home hasn’t always been inward. For many years, I was al-
ways on the go, searching, seeking and yearning for more. When my children were young, they were signed up for every sport such as swimming, soccer, baseball, hockey, football, basketball, and volleyball! Crazy, when I think back to all the running around we did as parents so that our children could excel and stay out of trouble. My father once said to me, “slow down Helen, you are missing the whole point of life. I had no idea what he was talking about until years later when we slowed down. Our family dinners, vacations and time together would be memories of a time of love and affection for one another. We would appreciate the small things in life. Home is a place they return to where they can truly feel themselves and be at ease. They know they are loved and supported and can be who are they are in the safe haven of our home. Your sanctuary is with-
The Rockaway Times in and always full of love and hope. Certainly, over the years I have developed a practice of prayer and intention leading me to this revelation of clarity. No matter where you live or how much you are suffering, you can find a home within your inner landscape. It’s deep and miraculous. In many ways, I thank my mom and dad for instilling a deep faith within me. “When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy. - Rumi. How blessed you will be if you begin to live from within. You are open and full of love. We all have the capacity to live with ease and be at home within ourselves. Breathing in, I am loved, breathing out, I am home. When I come home to myself, I live free of disease. “May all that is unforgiven in you, be released. May your fears yield their deepest tranquilities. May all that is unlived in you, blossom into a future, graced with love. - John O’Donohue

SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning I Should Write A Book Last week, Governor Cuomo announced that he will be releasing a book in October. My first response was, wow I love to write and I have many notes on a few books I would like to write but finding the time to write is difficult. I was impressed that he had the time to write a book while a crisis was going on in our state. Then I said to myself, maybe he wrote the book before the crisis and was waiting for it to be edited and such. Then I found out the title: American Crisis- Leadership Lessons From The Covid-19 Pandemic.
1. I do not know how he had the time to write a book during the pandemic. Wasn’t he running the state with the highest amount of cases? 2. How can you write a book about leadership when your leadership was not good? According to the New York Times, 6,200 residents in nursing homes died and many people blame Governor Cuomo for his lack of leadership when he sent positive cases of Covid back into the nursing homes. Whenever I teach a short
LASZLO KOVACS ALL TYPES OF DEPARTMENT OF BUILDINGS SERVICES
story or a novel, we always do an author study. I try to point out to the students that authors write about what they know. They find it so interesting how many common things come up from out study into the work of literature we are reading. Harper Lee was a Southern young woman who was raised by her lawyer father. It was not a stretch that her protagonist Scout was quite similar to Lee. I then tell my students that I would someday like to write a book about a middle class family from Rockaway who loses their family member to cancer and how the family members each deal with it. I tell them I would not write a book about being an Upper East Side socialite. I cannot write that book as I know nothing about that world. But now Governor Cuomo has given me new inspiration and I am going to write some books about topics I am not too familiar with: 1. How to run a marathon. I have always wanted to run
Page 25 a marathon and I ran the Santa Shuffle 5K one year in 35 minutes. I can definitely tell people how to train for a marathon. I’ll even get some tips from my runner friend Lynn Duffy who is an avid runner and has run a half marathon. That seems good enough in Cuomo’s world. 2. Weight loss. I know what to do to lose weight. So, even though I have not been practicing those ideas, I can still write a book about it! 3. Chemistry. I took the chemistry regents multiple times. No matter how many times that nice teacher from Saint Francis Prep tried to tutor me, I could not get a Regents Diploma. However, now I can write a book about chemistry. I mean we do have the internet now! Well, let me go, I am going to try to write one of these today. Oh wait, I have errands to run, house chores to do and work for a few hours. Maybe Cuomo can write a book to help me with my time management.

Summer Classic Roundup Last Wednesday saw the first champions crowned in this special 2020 edition of the St. Francis Summer Classic. Boardwalk Pizza took a 30-20 halftime lead before Jameson’s Pub came back and defended their Women’s Open title with a 54-41 victory. Amani Tatum led with 18, Brianna Sloper added 17, and Mei-Lyn Bautista 14. Kathryn Gibson had nine for Boardwalk. Rounding out the Jameson’s team are Christie Marrone, Kristin Henschel, Nicole Nicholson, and Kerri White. The Boys High School championship was won by Chelsea Irish 59-48 over Boarders Surf Shop. The champs were coached by Frank Walker, and the players are Frankie Walker, Frankie Sweeney, Michael Battaglia, Matt Frost, Michael Langone, Brian Langone, Kyle Fabiszcewski, Joe Jenkusky, Nicholas Walsh, Nabiyu Ndiaye Matheu, and Pol Canals who scored a game high 27.

NYBS Mechanical are the Girls High School champs after beating Nicole Frontera Beauty 48-38. Hannah Brown led the champs with 19 and was joined by Olivia Vero, Charlotte Mitchell, Olivia Scarpacci, Tori Mullen, Kara Wehmer, and Kelly Baker for coach Jim Mullen. The Men’s Open championship was a classic, precisely because it unfolded differently than expected. Instead of a high
octane shootout, defense became the game with all digging deep to stop their opponent. Village Saloon prevailed 51-45 over the defending champs, Kennedy’s Restaurant. Kevin Crockett led Kennedy’s with 14, but it was the loss of team captain Ryan Woerner, who fouled out on a tough play, that may have sealed their fate. George Riefenstahl scored 17 and was a defensive force inside. Conor Monaghan added 9 and Ste-

Wrestle Talk THE FUTURE OF WRESTLING
By Eric Jayden
As the world continues to live and get through the pandemic, professional wrestling companies are trying to find ways to deliver the wrestling experience to the fans. In the United States, the major professional wrestling companies are still not touring around the country and are only using Network Television and Social Media to deliver their product. Most recently, the WWE has created a New Concept called "The Thunderdome," which is a state-of-the-art set located in the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida with video boards that are set up throughout the arena that show actual fans watching the show live from their homes like a virtual Video Conference System. WWE producer Kevin Dunn told
Sports Illustrated that “the ThunderDome will resemble the NBA's virtual Fan Experience but instead of a flat board facing cameras, we'll have rows and rows and rows of fans with enhanced chants and cheering." Now, here is the question "Is this the future of pro wrestling?" Will virtual fans replace actual fans in seats? Is this the way we will interact with pro wrestlers? Is buying a ticket, taking a seat and having a hot dog and soda in an arena truly over? I personally hope not because nothing can replace the actual experience of watching a professional wrestling show live. I believe this is a byproduct of the pandemic and once the pandemic is under control or completely over, we will return back to having live shows. Many fans have been weighing in on this new concept and
so far, their opinion has been favorable, with only the true wrestling purests not liking the ThunderDome concept. Only time will tell if WWE fans remain loyal and stay watching the product under this new concept or go watch a different wrestling show. The question of the week comes from Marc A. in Bayswater and he asked, "I am a big Lucha Libre fan and I watch many Lucha Matches from Mexico and I wonder why Lucha Libre is not shown more often in the United States?" That's an excellent question Marc and here is the problem on why we don't see much of Lucha Libre here in the States. The American wrestling fan is used to the American form of wrestling, which is traditional rules and format. Lucha Libre in general doesn't tell a story. That's not
to say that there are no good guys or bad guys in matches but the way the matches flow with the no tagging in and out and the blatant rule-breaking in front of the referee throws most American fans off. There used to be a company called Lucha Underground that aired on the El Rey Network that brought Lucha Libre to the American fans but unfortunately, they are no longer in operation. I am a Lucha Libre fan and I still watch it on various Network channels from Mexico. On next week's column, we'll talk about: is the WWE trying to bring back the Attitude Era? Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com you can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy. Have a great week!
