Happy Mardi Gras! Well that went fast. Labor Day Weekend is here and for some parts of town, that means its time for Mardi Gras! Broad Channel, Breezy Point and Roxbury will all end the summer with parades, costumes and plenty of fun. Broad Channel’s Mardi Gras weekend kicks off on Friday, August 31 at 7 p.m. with the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department’s Dancing in the Streets event at 15 Noel Road. All are welcome to dance the night away at this block party that will feature games, music, drinks, a dunk tank, raffles and more. On Saturday, September 1, Family Day kicks off at noon at the Broad Channel Athletic Club Field. There will be running races and activities for the kids, a He-Man competition, music, food and drinks for purchase and more. On Monday, September 3, watch or partici-

pate in the Broad Channel Mardi Gras Parade, which will feature floats, costumes and more. The parade itself kicks off from 10th Road and Cross Bay Boulevard at 1 p.m., and heads toward the BCAC Memorial Field, where there will be a BBQ and award ceremony. Parade registration begins at 10th Road at 11 a.m. and paraders must start lining up at 12:30 p.m. All weekend long, the private communities of Breezy Point and Roxbury will be having their own celebrations. Both neighborhoods decorate their homes for the vent and hold their own parades, and people tendy to get creative and comical. The 60th Breezy Point Mardi Gras parade is Saturday, September 1 at noon. Then the next day, Roxbury has its own parade starting at 2:30 p.m. Happy Mardi Gras!

Twenty-four hours on a trampoline? Sounds exhausting. But for these local girls, it was more like a unique, fun time spent with friends. Starting on Monday, August 27, Carly Intrabartolo, 11, Daisy O’Grady, 12, Ava Powell, 12, and Abby Urciuoli, 12, spent 24 hours on a backyard trampoline, with only breaks to use the bathroom indoors. However they didn’t spend the entire time jumping. Their 24hour challenge on the trampoline included card games, Ciro’s pizza for lunch, Kam Fung Chinese for dinner, ice cream, occasional visits from their “mas-

cot,� Brooke Intrabartolo, and of course, sleep. This was the second year the girls completed this challenge. After being told that they couldn’t have a regular sleepover, the girls proposed their own social media challenge in which they stay on a trampoline for 24 hours. Not thinking they’d be able to complete it, their parents agreed. And this year they did it all again, while posting updates to social media apps like Snapchat, so their friends could cheer them on. Word is they’re already planning next year’s challenge!

COLLEGE BOUND

Lots of kids headed off to college recently. That reminded me of a column from a couple of years ago: My grandmother left Ireland for good at 16 or 17 years old (they were never sure back then) and headed to New York by boat. Soon after passing the Statue of Liberty, she hopped aboard a train and headed to San Francisco where she’d meet her brother and establish roots. She did it all without texting. It must’ve been so much easier on the parents then. The kids would head off and you wouldn’t hear from them again for six months. You’d never hear about every closecall, mishap and weirdo or what they had for lunch. These days you can pretty much stay in constant con-

tact and all that does is drive you a little insane or a lot insane. Some parents, if the kid doesn’t text or call every 20 minutes, call the FBI and put posters on telephone poles. My 18 year old, who will go unnamed, headed back in the other direction, to Ireland, for a semester abroad just last week. His first message, via text, was: I’m going through customs. Broke my glasses on the flight. And so it began… I have to admit I thought he’d get further than Dublin Airport with his glasses intact, but I’m not that optimistic so I packed him an extra pair. A day later he sends another text: you sent an empty case. There were no glasses in it. I wanted to fly over immediately, grab him by the neck, and point to the glasses I know were (and still are) in the case or the luggage bag. Kids like to annoy you and really like it when they’re across the ocean.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before he tells me about the missing glasses he shoots various other texts: Irish food sucks. Toilet doesn’t work, like there’s no flusher. And I just took one. Me: There’s definitely a flusher. You just have to find it. Him: It was under a vent. I resist the temptation to say – your glasses are probably in there, too. My roommates are a dwarf and a hick. And I met two people from Missouri. They were as expected. Great, he’s gonna cause an international incident, I’m thinking. Somebody passed out outside my dorm room. I had to step over him this morning. Irish people want me to go to a toga party…I’m in a frat now. Me: A frat?! Who is this? What have you done with my son? They just told me I was in. They said I look more Irish than

they do. They don’t think I’m American. They keep saying, do it for parish, lad! I can’t tell if he likes it so far. A commuter student got stuck on campus last night so I let him sleep on the couch outside my room. He left a thank you note and signed it The Tall Effin Ginger. I don’t know what to say, so I say nothing. I went to a lock and key party. Girls have a lock and the boys have a key so you get to meet people. I got matched up with this stunning, modelesque girl. But when she smiled, both her front teeth were missing. Not the ones in the back, the front. There’s a big soccer game. The star on the other team everyone hates is named Boyle. Somebody asked me my name a minute ago and I said, “Donohue.” I have my first class tomorrow. Two years later, it ain’t any easier.

The Ultimate RockaWarrior Trains for the NYC Marathon By Katie McFadden

Back in January, Michael Hornung wasn’t much of a runner when he made the decision to take on one of the biggest running challenges in the world— The TCS New York City Marathon. However, where there’s a will there’s away, and the drive behind Hornung’s will is to honor his late father, Mickey Hornung, and to bring awareness to the disease his father battled—Parkinson’s. Taking on the persona of a wrestling-inspired character, The Ultimate RockaWarrior, Hornung has turned the boardwalk into his ring as he prepares for the big matchup ahead of him on November 4. As you enjoy your evenings on the boardwalk, don’t be alarmed by a running man donning warrior paint and a golden belt. It’s just The Ultimate RockaWarrior! Hornung has adopted this persona to bring more attention to his cause, and to pay homage to something he and his father enjoyed—wrestling. “When I was a kid, my dad and I would watch wrestling all the time. The Ultimate Warrior was one character that was always larger than life and fought for the greater good,” Hornung said. After moving to Rockaway in June, Hornung decided to put a local spin on the name of the pro-wrestler from the ‘80s and ‘90s, and became The Ultimate RockaWarrior. Hornung now uses the character as a way to make training fun as he prepares for the task ahead, the NYC Marathon on November 4. Sometimes donning the belt and warrior paint, or colored sunscreen, Hornung trains on the boardwalk three times a week. “As The Ultimate RockaWarrior, I’ll sometimes run to one side of the boardwalk, pretending it’s like ropes on a wrestling ring, and I’ll bounce off and run to the other side. It becomes mundane just running back and forth, so it’s something to keep my brain going,” Hornung said. And occasionally, he’ll scream out, “The Ultimate RockaWarrior” as he

runs. Why? So people search it on the internet. With a quick Google search, you can find Hornung’s social media accounts that explain exactly what he’s fighting for. Hornung is on this quest to raise awareness and funds for the Parkinson’s Foundation. When Hornung was a middle-schooler, his father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. At the time, there was very little information out there on this debilitating illness. “There was only one website on it at the time and there wasn’t a lot of information, so when my dad was going through this, as a kid, I didn’t really know what was going on or what Parkinson’s meant. This one time, my sister and I were in the car with him and we’re sitting at a red light and all of a sudden, he hits the car in front of us, tapping the bumper. The driver gets out of the car, sees the bumper and says it’s fine and gets back in his car. Then we joked with my dad, saying, ‘I can’t believe you hit that guy’ and we just started talking like everything was fine. Then he hits the car again,” Hornung recalled. “I was 16 years old and just learning how to drive myself and I had to have this conversation with him about it being time to take away his driver’s license.” With little information out there, Hornung and his family were unable to really understand Mickey’s behavior. at 56. “He died of a heart attack,” Hornung said. “A lot of patients with Parkinson’s will try to hide their health issues and often take a lot of medications. My father was trying to take control of it by getting back into shape. He was doing everything right and he went to the gym and that’s where he passed. He was trying his best, but sometimes you can’t do it alone.” It wasn’t until after his father passed, that Hornung was able to access more resources and information that explained why his father did certain things beyond the trembling, like hitting the same car twice while driving. Understanding that there are others out there that might feel like they’re facing Parkinson’s alone, and others who may not completely grasp what Parkinson’s does, Hornung decided to run the marathon to bring attention to the disease, and to let those going through it, know that someone is fighting for them. “Even though my father passed away, I’m still fighting for the research. I know from my experience with my dad, that while going through this disease, which can be dehumanizing, you don’t know if the world is with you. Plus a lot of people don’t understand what Parkinson’s is. They just think of it as shaking, but it’s not just motor skills that are impacted. Some patients also suffer from depression, anxiety and mood disorders because they’re not dealing with the disease prop-

erly, plus other symptoms. So by creating this character and running this marathon, I wanted to let people with Parkinson’s know that I’m here fighting for them and trying to be a superhero that can bring more awareness to this disease,” he said. Hornung has set out to raise $3,500 for the Parkinson’s Foundation before marathon day. As of press time, he’s about halfway there. I was 30 pounds heavier and so in over my head. I figured the worst that could happen is that I don’t finish, but I will have raised money for the Parkinson’s Foundation. But I started training and told myself, I can’t do that. I’ve been following a training program and I’m getting into the habit of running every week,” Hornung said. This week, he’ll be running his first 13-miler. Sharing his journey on social media has brought accountability to the goal. He’s also counting on supporters to get him through on marathon day. “People that have done the marathon tell me that the first 15 miles are hard, but as it gets later, you start seeing more people you know. Friends and family have already been telling me which mile they’ll be at, so that’ll keep me going. I don’t know how I can do this, but I’m just going to,” he said. Without sturdy bulkheads, that area is just an open door for floodwaters. Inaugural 'What's the Craic Bar Crawl' Honors Local Navy Serviceman

This past Saturday, August 25, a gaggle of fun-loving locals made it their mission to hit up almost every bar in Rockaway to unite the community and to especially celebrate the end of summer with their friend, Kevin Acosta, before he returns to his U.S. naval post in Honolulu, Hawaii. A group that included Jason Nochamre, Matthew Cappiello, Andrew Fay, Chris Rivara, Matt Brady, Kevin Acosta, Katie Gallagher, Joseph Gallagher, John Boyle and Danny Goldberg had great craic on Saturday as they made their way around town. Their “What’s the Craic Bar

Crawl” extended from Arverne to Belle Harbor with watering holes on the hefty list that included Jameson’s, Pico RBNY, Rogers, Happy Jack's Burger Bar, Healy’s Pub, Community House, Rockaway Beach BBQ, Whit’s End, Bungalow Bar, Connolly’s, Sayra’s Wine Bar, Rockaway Beach Surf Club, Rockaway Brewing Company and Epstein’s. However, when the crawlers discovered that the latter was closed, they stumbled upon local outdoor eatery, La Barracuda, and were in full force to add something new to the list. thought it was the perfect way to describe a bar crawl in Rockaway. The Gallaghers said, “The mustache bash bar crawl was a fun event in Rockaway, and we wanted to bring it back, and with Kevin here, what better way to gather our friends to celebrate the end of the summer and our love for Kevin, and honor his service to our country!” Due to the hurricane in Hawaii, Acosta, a lifelong Rockaway resident, was unable to fly back to base, so his friends decided to organized the bar crawl in honor of him. Joseph Gallagher, a member of United Brothers of Carpenters Local 157 NYC Union, said, “I’m a union guy and have great respect for what guys like Kevin sacrifice for this country, and this was the perfect opportunity to gather our friends to do this bar crawl, and we hope to make this an annual event. This bar crawl was created for locals

by locals. This is why we got these t-shirts made, to have a permanent Rockaway stamp on how we roll as a community — united as one!” Acosta joined the Navy when he was 18, and after four years of service stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, he will receive honorable discharge on September 28. Acosta said, “While on deployment, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and tinnitus, also while on duty, I lacerated the flexor tendon in my right hand. I’ll miss the Navy because it taught me discipline and gave me great pride to serve my country. Serving the Navy gave me purpose and taught me a lot, for which I’ll be forever grateful, and for my friends to include me in this event is a memory I will always treasure. Boating in Rockaway is a two-part series by The Rockaway Times highlighting the amazing experiences locals and visitors alike can have in our beautifully rich Jamaica Bay. Jamaica Bay is an 18,000acre wetland estuary surrounded by the Rockaway peninsula to the south, Brooklyn to the west, and mainland Queens to the east, and includes approximately 10,000 acres of parkland managed by the National Park Service and NYC Parks as an urban national park. Comprising an area almost equal to the size of Manhattan, the bay consists of numerous islands, a

labyrinth of waterways, meadowlands, and two freshwater ponds. The wetlands provide a unique environment for both wildlife preservation and urban recreation. Enclosed by the Rockaway peninsula and protected from the Atlantic Ocean, the region hosts an abundance of wildlife. In the 1980s, I used to have a sailboat docked in this marina, but after years passed and my passion, not to mention, patience for sailing waned, in 2016, I bought my current pontoon motorboat,” Galvin said. Galvin’s boat is called, “Endless Summer,” and the beauty of experiences lapped up on the boat is definitely “endless.” When meeting Galvin and his co-captain, Joseph Supple, a gangly, black as soot, double-crested Cor-

are deep divers that unmercifully catch birds with their beaks, and could hold their breath under water for long stretches. Galvin said that he and Supple ardently enjoy fishing, but they prefer to go “outside,� (meaning in the ocean) to fish. According to Galvin and Supple, good fish to catch in this current season are sea bass, porgies, fluke and tautog (black fish). However, they noted that poaching is not allowed, meaning there are regulations mandated by the Department of Conservation (DEC) on what fish you are allowed to catch, and the number of fish you are allowed to keep. Now for the tour. Pulling out from the dock in Arverne, Galvin pointed out to dormant cranes and machinery in the bay. Galvin said, “That’s been a mystery for years. Hopefully one day, they’ll finally remove them because they serve no purpose, and are a nuisance, not just for boaters, but the habitat’s environment.� Supple, stationed on the lower deck, pointed out the buoys. Some of these buoys actually have bells or gongs to alert ongoing navigators about fog or other dangerous conditions. We cruised by Bungalow Bar and Thai Rock. According to Supple, the only local restaurants you are allowed to dock, and go inside to eat are Bungalow Bar and The Wharf. Kennedy’s in Breezy Point

THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2018 used to have a docking pier, but after being destroyed in Hurricane Sandy, it was never rebuilt. Supple pointed out the several islets in the bay including, The Raunt, Big Egg, Elders West, Elders East, Yellow Bar, Black Walk, Ruler’s Bar and Ruffle Bar. “We call these the Electric beaches because boaters like to dock here illegally, and have a huge party. It’s not allowed, but people do it anyway,� Supple said. As we passed by, we saw some folks near Ruffle Bar, and it looked like they were down for the day. An NYPD and FDNY boat were speeding by, but the FDNY boat returned to let off some water and spray some folks nesting on the shore. Supple said, “They probably know these people. It’s a hot day, so spraying them with water is probably a treat.� We also passed by Reid Avenue Pier in Roxbury, which was demolished during Sandy, but was never resurrected to its former glory. Galvin said, “This used to be the original main pier for the ferry in the 1920s. We used to fish here, you could literally see the fish in the water.� Then we passed by the decaying pier in front of Kennedy’s, destroyed during Sandy. Next, the highlight was seeing the U-Boat Lookout. At first glance, it looks like a lighthouse, but according to Supple it was a lookout for soldiers during WWII, and even after the numerous storms and hurricanes in the area, it is still standing. As we neared Breezy Point’s tip, there was an interesting looking structure. When asked, Supple explained, “Believe it or not, this is an A-beam from the World Trade Center that was put here as a reminder and monument to the community. Rockaway lost a lot of lives in 9/11, but as you see from our beautiful waters, we still keep resilient and always Rockaway strong.� w

Diving Into Finance with the FINancial Sharktress By Katie McFadden

Sharks are not just the apex predators of the ocean. They’re fierce, go-getters that seize beneficial opportunities. So it’s no wonder Rockaway Beach resident, Galit Tsadik, was inspired by them to embrace her inner shark and start her own financial management business, Tsadik G Management. When dealing with personal or commercial finances, it’s easy to drown in the deep waters of money management. However, Tsadik, aka the FINancial Sharktress, is here to help others find their own inner shark, take a bite out of debt and have a fin up on finances without fear. With her love for all things ocean, especially sharks, as a child, Tsadik had dreams of someday working as a marine biologist. However, she found herself floating above another subject—math. So she went on to pursue her specialty, earning a double bachelor’s degree in economics and psychology at Queens College. She then furthered her expertise by becoming a Certified Master Mortgage Underwriter, a Certified Commercial Underwriter and a Certified Financial Instructor. In 2015, Tsadik made a shark move by starting her own business, Tsadik G Management. After operating out of Manhattan and then Rockville Center, she decided to bring her financial knowledge right to her own backyard. In November 2017, she opened her Beach 116th Street office. When it comes to managing money, Tsadik does it all. “With my business, I turn overwhelmed entrepreneurs and businesses into badass sharks with their money. For businesses I do management consulting, outsource, CFO services, bookkeeping, basically anything in a business that has to do with money, I take care of,” Tsadik said. However, she has also broadened her services to individuals that also seek help, by offering financial coaching. “I help people by changing their relationship with money so they

can feel empowered and confident and can seize opportunities when they see them,” she said. For Tsadik, working for herself was personal example of seizing an opportunity. Tsadik’s experience in the finance world goes back a decade. She started her career by working with commercial mortgages as a mortgage underwriter and went on to work for Morgan Stanley doing mortgage compliance, but the work wasn’t inspiring. “I wanted to be able to work with businesses. I’ve been working since I’m 14 and in all my jobs, I had this tendency to go in and immediately try to improve things and make their systems better, so I really wanted to utilize those skills. I thought the best opportunity was to work for a tech startup,” Tsadik said. So she did by joining a tech startup in Manhattan that had no finance department when they started. “I was able to create everything for them and I really loved it, but I decided that I wanted to do this for lots of businesses instead of just one,” she said. After dealing with the corporate world, Tsadik decided that to do what she truly wanted, the best course of action was to do it herself. “I found that nobody will value you more than you value yourself. I was getting a lot of pushback when I asked people to pay me what I was worth and I realized the only way I’d make the money I deserved from putting in all the work that I did, was to work for myself. was a man coming into finance, I wouldn’t have gotten as much pushback and I didn’t want to feel resentful at the end of the day because I was putting in so much work and not making that much money. I decided to embody the shark and say, this is who I am,” she said. Tsadik made the decision to be her own boss, and became the founder and CEO of her own business that helps multiple businesses. However, recently, Tsadik decided to dive into the waters of personal finance as well. “I had people coming up to me and saying ‘I love what you’re doing for businesses, can you help me?’” she said. The drive to help individuals also came from personal struggles. “I grew up in an abusive household, where my mother gave over her power by giving my father all of her money, even though she was the breadwinner. I saw how hard it was for her to leave a really toxic situation. For a long time, she didn’t think she could do it on her own and control her own money. When she finally left, I saw how much her life changed for the better. I want to be able to give that to other people. We ran away to a domestic violence shelter and saw so many women that had been through the same thing. On some level, having your own money is having your own power and that was a way for these women to be controlled. I don’t want anyone to stay in a toxic situation, whether it’s a toxic work environment or relationship, because they don’t have the money or power to get out of it. I want people to understand that they can do it on their own,” she said. With her financial coaching side of the business, Tsadik took on the name of the FINancial Sharktress and incorporated the ocean and well, sharks, into everything she does, from having her office decked out in shark gear, to giving sharkshaped pens to her clients. “In 2014, I went to St. Maarten and swam with Caribbean reef sharks and it was the most exhilarating experience. They’ve

been this spirit animal for me and I think it’s perfect for the business to not think about sharks in a predatory way, much like finances. Sharks are these elegant, beautiful creatures that take advantage of every opportunity placed in front of them,” Tsadik said. “Also, it brings this fun aspect to money that you don’t get elsewhere. I’ll help you create a blissfully beachy budget, with your foundation, your waves of variable expenses and your fun in the sun money. It makes people want to do it. The key to money is you have to want to pay attention to it, and if you’re afraid of it and it’s not fun, you’re not going to want to manage it and grow. Plus the whole beach and shark theme fits well with Rockaway.” Tsadik also fits well with Rockaway. In addition to owning her own business, Tsadik is a shark when it comes to community support. She serves as the secretary of the Rockaway Business Alliance, treasurer of Ladies of Business of Rockaway Beach and director of finance for ARFARF, which oversees the Rockaway dog park. “It’s important to me to give back to the community since the community has supported me,” Tsadik said. The Rockaway Times More People, More Problems Dear Editor: As a regular RT reader, it frustrates me to continually read the great ferry reviews and the wonderful increase in ridership especially on the weekends. Yes, it is a great ride and it’s great for Rockaway’s businesses and I’m all for it, but where the crowds go after the ride was not considered. These full-to-capacity vessels unload thousands of visitors who pour onto the closest beaches: 107th-108th-109th, causing, them to be overcrowded. What is unfortunate is that the beaches just north of them are designated surf beaches and because of these huge crowds, the visitors settle onto these spacious beaches (despite the red flags) and find out that they must walk to Beach 109th to swim. Most just go into the un-lifeguarded waters to cool

As a resident, I sit on Beach 109th and watch this. A remedy? 1) Since these uptown surf beaches are used primarily by a handful (literally) of surfers, the Parks Dept. could open up these beaches on weekends in the summer to the thousands of visitors to enjoy Rockaway’s beaches. When these uptown surf beaches were first designated to relieve overcrowding on the two stretches of surf beaches downtown, the ferry’s future success and the thousands of people arriving on them each day was unanticipated. But now that we see how popular this ferry is, these surf beaches are no longer feasible on weekends in the summer season. Or, 2) Have a second Rockaway ferry stop uptown or downtown. I know it’s late in the season, but it could be investigated for the 2019 season. Mel S.

On this day, around the world, people come together to raise awareness about overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. On this day, we also come together to acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends, and remember those who have died. The U.S. is experiencing the worst overdose epidemic in our history. The overwhelming majority of deaths are due to overdoses with opioids (prescription narcotics, heroin) and increasingly fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has poisoned the illicit drug supply. In NYC, overdoses take the lives of three people every day. Many more are administered the antidote naloxone, and given a second chance. Thankfully, our emergency personnel, firefighters and police officers carry naloxone. The epidemic affects

all demographics—young, old, rich, poor, White, Black, and Latino. Anyone who is concerned about a loved one, a friend, a neighbor… can also carry naloxone. R o c k aw ay G e t s Na l ox o n e, funded by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOH), now in its second year, has given out nearly 1,000 naloxone nasal sprays to Rockaway and other NYC residents. So let's unpack this! Jealousy is a recipe of desire, longing and feeling not enough. These things are built into our society though media, commercials and such. So, all the feelings you have of jealousy are totally normal, and yes uncomfortable. I wonder if you know the women you find yourself jealous of? If you do, I always err on the side of sharing the feelings, which can also be tremendously uncomfortable, but it usually brings you energy and power in not hiding these feelings, as truth is medicine for growth. If straight up sharing the truth feels impossible, you can also go to the woman and give her compliments and ask her questions about what you find

so triggering. I find that most women these days can be open for this kind of dialogue. If you are jealous of a woman that does not seem to be open at all, doing what you are doing right now is extremely helpful, reaching out to share and asking for support. Jealousy is normal. GATEWAY’S FOUR-LEGGED LAW ENFORCEMENT

If you have spent time on the beaches at Fort Tilden or Riis, you may have come across Smokey, Sir Lancelot, Keegan or Harper:

the four horses that make up the United States Park Police (USPP) Mounted Unit in Jamaica Bay. Believe me, at about 10 ft. tall, they stand out. Recently I was able to spend an afternoon chatting with David Rodriguez, an officer with the unit, as I got to know the horses and learn more about what they do. Summer in the park is easily the busiest season, and the officers and their horses will spend up to six hours a day patrolling the beaches. Handling disputes between visitors, ensuring dogs are not on the beaches in summer months, and protecting the wildlife (such as the threatened piping plover) in the park are just a few of the things that the USPP Mounted Unit oversees on a day-to-day basis. One of Officer Rodriguez’s favorite aspects of the job is building a relationship with the community. Rodriguez emphasized how important interacting with folks is for the job. Introducing the public to these endearing law enforcement li-

Because horses are skittish creatures by nature, an aspiring USPP Mount goes through about six months to a year of training to see if they can withstand everything from large crowds to loud noises and a whole assortment of unexpected distractions. Only about half the candidates end up making the cut. Illustrating just this, Officer Rodriguez recounted a story of a windy day at Ft. Tilden when a beach umbrella blew directly in the path of one of the horses. While this may perturb an ordinary equine, his mount did not bat an eye (or stomp a hoof for that matter). At about 24-25 years of age, a USPP horse can expect to hang up their "shield" and retire. Once a horse has left the force, they are either returned to their original owners or given to people who possess the knowledge, skills, and resources to care for them. It came as no surprise when Rodriguez told me that lifelong bonds are formed, and officers will often check in on their old partners to see how their golden years are treating them. The next time you see Smokey, Sir Lancelot, Keegan, or Harper (and of course their accompanying officers) out on patrol, be sure to say hello. They would love to meet you!

ULRICH FUNDS BEACH 116TH CLEAN-UP Beach 116th Street is getting a pick-me-up. On Monday, August 27, Councilman Eric Ulrich announced a new clean-up initiative in Rockaway. Ulrich has provided $70,000 in funding to the Wildcat Services Corporation, a nonprofit organization that provides job opportunities and resources for unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers, to clean up some trash-prone areas in Rockaway, including Beach 116th Street. "I want to thank Wildcat and the terrific workers that work hard to keep our city clean. We are thrilled to partner with Wildcat again this year to offer much-needed supplemental sanitation services throughout the district," Councilman Ulrich said at Monday’s press conference. "One of the places that will receive weekly cleaning is Beach 116th Street, which

has undergone a remarkable resurgence since Hurricane Sandy. We want to make sure we support the men and women who own and operate their businesses here." Other locations that will be cleaned through this effort include Jamaica Avenue, Cross Bay Boulevard and Shore Parkway - among others. "I'd love to thank the Councilman for getting the street cleaned up," Dr. Dan Mirkin of Mirkin Vision said. "We've had a trash issue and it will be nice to present a good image [and] having clean streets is a great start."

The Power of Intention I have been thinking about the power of intention lately and just by chance I picked up a deck of inspirational cards and the card I picked was the author relaying something he read about the effect of group meditation on crime. After some googling, I found it. “Washington meditation project reverses violent crime trend by 23.3 percent.” (worldpeace. org). In the summer of 1993, during an almost two-month period, through the power of group meditation, there was a remarkable effect on the city.

They investigated if there were any other variables, and found none. Crime was reduced. I was amazed and not surprised. What a magnificent example of coming together, positivity, peacefulness and collective energy consciousness. It was an extremely concentrated effort on the part of all of those individuals during that time. Their lives stopped - they concentrated their energies on positively reducing violence in the area embraced by the breadth of the group. The result is astounding.

What can we take from this occurrence? We have lives to live, people to see, work to do, meals to cook, nurturing to do, bedtime stories to read, lunches to pack, flights to catch, shopping to do, support to give, and on and on. How do we stop on a daily basis to project intentions to better our community, our families, our circle, ourselves? I know that when we internalize a hope, a feeling, an intention over and over again, it manifests. Maybe not in the timeframe that we want, or in the exact way we want, but the shift happens. The positive intention causes shift and change. What would you like to shift in your life? What do you want to change? It took the power of a multitude of people to make a multitude of changes in Washington DC; it will take the power of you to make a single change in you. It will take the power of you to make a positive change in your circle. It will take the power of you to make a positive change in your family. It will take the power of you to make a posi-

The Rockaway Times tive change in your community. The energy of positive change follows the positive intention. It is as simple as that. Positive intentions help us to find the answers to things. If we are dealing with an illness or a heart-wrenching problem or an emotional upset, conjuring up positive language, repeating it inside or out loud, eventually changes the perspective causing us to see the issue in a different way, possibly moving away from it or finding an answer in a non-conventional place. The same is true for those around us. When we circle around and around in the negative thoughts and connotations, it only hinders us from understanding and living harmoniously. Harmony is ecstasy and bliss. Living with the intention to be in harmony with ourselves, inner circle, family and community will bring joy and peace. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

HCM

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common and complex disease. It is caused by a genetic mutation. Since the genetic inheritance of this disease was first discovered in 1960, more than 1,400 mutations associated with the disease have been discovered, making it now the most common inherited cardiovascular disease. It is estimated to affect one in every 200 people, or half a percent of the population. It is found in all ethnic groups. Most people who have it are not aware of its presence, but some are affected at an early age. In rare but tragic

cases, it causes sudden death while competing in sports. HCM is caused by thickening of the septum of the heart. The septum is the interior heart wall that separates the left and right ventricles. This thickening of the septal wall causes a blockage to blood flow out of the left ventricle. Because the disease may also cause some of the coronary arteries to be abnormally small, the blockage of blood flowing out of the heart can cause that part of the heart to be stressed, which may trigger a fatal arrythmia. Unlike a narrowed heart valve, which

causes a fixed obstruction to blood flow, the obstruction to blood flow in HCM is dynamic, or variable. Reducing blood flow to the heart, such as doing a Valsalva maneuver (i.e. bearing down during a bowel movement), which increases pressure in the chest and lessens blood flow to the heart, can make the blockage worse. HCM is often not detectable by physical exam alone. Some patients may have a heart murmur, but many do not. If a murmur is present, it becomes louder if the patient does a Valsalva maneuver. HCM is usually diagnosed using an EKG and echocardiogram, or sonogram of the heart. Cardiac MRI can also be helpful. Genetic testing can also be performed. Treatment of asymptomatic HCM is usually conservative. Avoidance of competitive sports and intense physical activity is usually recommended. Light aerobic exercise is usually allowed, however isometric exercise (i.e. weight-

Page 27 lifting) should be avoided as it can cause a Valsalva maneuver and trigger an arrythmia or loss of consciousness. Avoiding dehydration and excessive alcohol intake are also recommended. Symptoms of HCM can include palpitations, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Symptomatic HCM can be treated with medications. Insertion of a cardiac defibrillator is sometimes performed, and other surgical procedures can be done as appropriate. Medications that reduce blood flow to the heart should be avoided. These medications include ACE inhibitors (i.e. lisinopril), ARBs (i.e. losartan), diuretics, and digoxin. Lastly, anyone with a first-degree relative diagnosed with HCM or a relative who suffered sudden death at an early age (under 35) during athletics should have a cardiac evaluation and possibly undergo genetic testing. This Is Crackers

Well, we all should have seen this coming. After 116 years, Mondelez International, Nabisco's parent company, has ceded to the onslaught of ethical complaints lodged by PETA against the packaging on Barnum's Animals Crackers depicting exotic animals in circus cages on the box of crackers which is, of course, in this day and age quite politically incorrect.

Now, instead of showing the animals in cages (implying that they're traveling in boxcars for the circus), the newly-designed boxes feature a zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe, and a gorilla wandering side-by-side, enjoying their newfound freedom as they roam free in a Serengetitype grassland. I'm not quite sure what the hell the zebra and giraffe were thinking when they decided to join this happy group of newly freed animals, but I cannot help but think that I discern a hint of a smirk on the lion's face. As for me, as soon as I became aware of this new paradigm for the depiction of wild animals, I immediately searched through my cupboard and found six of the now "offensive" Barnum's Animals Crackers boxes and emptied the contents of all of them into the bay, whereupon all of the individual lions, tigers and bears were immediately set upon and ravaged by a colony of seagulls with multiple schools of killifish feasting on

the crumbs! I then discarded the now empty cardboard boxes with their politically incorrect images and put them out with the trash. Unfortunately, the next morning as I was feeling very smug with myself for joining with PETA in this ridiculous crusade, it suddenly dawned on me that the six boxes of the original animal crackers I had tossed could well have become a collector's item in the not-so-distant future and possibly worth a couple of bucks. I raced out of the house to search the garbage can on the sidewalk only to realize that, unlike most scheduled collection days, Build it Back did not have the street blocked and the sanitation truck had already come and gone, and with them went my fortune in collectable "offensive" Barnum's Animals Crackers boxes. I immediately set about to visit every supermarket, grocery store, deli, bodega, etc.,

between Rockaway and Ozone Park and, although the larger stores had already swapped out the old boxes for the new, I was able to appropriate twelve of the small original boxes replete with the "offensive" caged animals. I then stopped at a local hardware store and after purchasing the requisite items, I sat in the parking lot and tightly wrapped all twelve boxes with a black plastic garbage bag and then sealed all of it with duct tape and placed it on the passenger seat next to me. As I pulled out of the parking lot, all I could do was smile as I looked at this package next to me thinking - "Money in the Bank!" On the drive home, I was pulled over by one of New York's Finest, who had noticed that I had passed him without the benefit of a seat belt. I sheepishly admitted that as soon as he had hit his lights to alert me to pull over, I realized that I was not wearing a seat belt. "License, registration and insurance card please," he stated, and I went to my wallet and gave him what I thought was my driver's license but, in fact, I had handed over my New York State Medical Marijuana card instead. (Yes, that's another story.) After examining the card, the officer handed it back to me with a quizzical look on his face and stated: "This is not your license." Realizing my error, I rummaged through my wallet and finally came upon my license, but as I was handing it to him I saw he was staring intently at the package on my passenger seat. After taking my license, he then again returned to staring at the package on the passenger seat and asked if I had any

illegal substances in the car. It was only then that I also looked at the package of animal crackers and realized, "Oh my God, it looks just like a kilo wrapped weed! The officer directed me to remain in my vehicle while he ran my information and shortly thereafter he was joined by some plainclothes officers in an unmarked car. To make a long story short, I exited my car and gave the officers permission to search the vehicle and started to explain what was actually

in the package on the seat but was advised to remain quiet until they finished. The search of the car proved negative but I could tell that the package on the seat was still their main focus. I explained what has transpired earlier that day to all three officers but I could see the look of "Now I really have heard everything" settle over all their faces. At that point, I asked they unwrap the package so they could satisfy their curiosity. Some five minutes later all

twelve boxes of "collectible" offensive animal cracker boxes lay ripped opened on the hood of my car. The two plainclothes officers were laughing themselves silly as they drove away while I deposited my now worthless collection of animal crackers in a nearby trash basket. I asked the original officer who had stopped me if I could return to my car but he hesitated and, waving my license at me asked, "You know this is only a learner's permit don't you?" Suffice it to say, that I was ultimately sent on my way with an admonition to upgrade my learner's permit (and yes, that too is another story...) and not to immediately offer my medical marijuana card to the police when stopped while driving. He did have a sense of humor as was evidenced with his parting remark to me that perhaps I should seek out a 12step program to deal with my animal cracker fetish. Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 pounds boneless pork chops ½ teaspoon paprika Kosher Salt, to taste ¼ cup butter or olive oil, divided 5 ounces baby portobello mushrooms, sliced 6 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups beef broth Additional salt and pepper to taste Directions: Season both sides of pork chops with pepper, paprika and salt. Heat a large skillet on medium high heat and add 2 ta-

blespoons of butter or oil. Sear both sides of the pork chops until golden brown, approximately 4-5 minutes per side. Remove chops from pan and cover. In same skillet, add remaining butter or oil. Add the mushrooms and cook until golden and excess liquid evaporates, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and mustard and cook about 1 minute until garlic becomes fragrant. Stir in the flour, cooking and stirring to remove lumps. Slowly pour in broth, whisking until it incorporates. Taste sauce. If needed, season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to medium, stirring often, until it thickens. Return pork chops to pan and cook another 1-2 minutes.

The Department has made a tentative determination to approve this application for a new permit for a proposed withdrawal and discharge of up to 4,320,000 gallons per day of treated groundwater into Jamaica Bay (Class SB) from a treatment system consisting of sedimentation, filtration and carbon adsorption at the applicant’s project site located in Far Rockaway, Queens. The applicant proposes to operate a temporary construction dewatering and groundwater treatment system to facilitate the installation of a new trunk water main in Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 88th Street and Beach 73 rd Street. Pumped and treated groundwater is to be directed to existing NYCDEP storm sewers, which discharge to Broad Channel and Barbadoes Basin via existing NYCDEP outfalls (Outfall ID: ROC-657 and Outfall ID: ROC-653, respectively). MEDICATION & AUTISM A GAME OF HIT OR MISS?

To medicate or not to medicate — is the quandary many parents with children on the autism spectrum face. Personally, I was dead set against giving my nonverbal nine-year-old daughter on the spectrum any medication as I feared that she would go from being the Energizer Bunny to someone straight off the set of the Walking Dead. Her dad and I both are (or should I say, were) against administering any medication to help ease some of her autistic behaviors, but recently we started to discuss if our abstinence was actually good for her progress or lack thereof, when it comes to her attention span, and being able to focus on required tasks at hand such as homework or even being mentally present while being read a book. My daughter, Soanirina (aka Soa), is a fun-loving, outdoorsy girl, who loves to literally keep moving. Anyone ever checked out her awesome biceps, quads and six-pack abs, you can literally bounce a coin off of? I keep telling myself to be in as great shape as her, forget the gym, I just need to just follow her routine of jumping, prancing and skipping ALL DAY LONG! No exaggeration here, just ask her great-grandmum! However, all jokes aside, Soa’s constant need for movement makes it difficult for her to stay focused on tasks. I spoke to other parents who admitted because of a variety of physical and neurological health reasons, their children with autism are on a strict daily diet of medication, and are seeing the benefits. However, as many of you will agree, when you read about the side affects from a variety of prescribed medications, it's frighteningly daunting.

This drug, also used to treat people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, is used to decrease hyperactivity, reduce stereotyped behaviors, and minimize withdrawal and aggression among people with autism. The more common daunting side effects include: aggressive behavior, agitation, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, loss of balance control, mask-like face and the list goes on. Youser! Other classes of drugs prescribed (though not FDA-approved) to treat autistic behaviors include: -Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Zoloft or fluoxetine (Prozac): Antidepressants used to treat some problems that result from imbalances in the body's chemical systems, and have the potential to reduce the frequency and intensity of repetitive behaviors; decrease anxiety, irritability, tantrums, and aggressive behavior; and improve eye contact.

Page 35 -Stimulants: Help to increase focus and decrease hyperactivity in people with autism. -Anti-anxiety medications: Help relieve anxiety and panic disorders, which are often associated with ASD. -Anticonvulsants: Treat seizures and seizure disorders, such as epilepsy. Almost one-third of people with autism symptoms have seizures or seizure disorders. After sifting through all this information, my prime concerns are do the benefits outweigh the side effects, and basically are medical practitioners just experimenting with a variety of drugs and dosages to see what works? For me, that’s troubling. However, I’m desperate and fervently want to see my daughter progress, but at what cost? I want to open up this conversation with you, readers. One neurologist we visited, said that my daughter may have a combination of autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to Additude magazine, a quarterly consumer publication and website (www.additudemag.com) about ADHD: “Non-medical interventions are the best choice for treating autism. But sometimes, medication can be used to help stray symptoms get under control. At one time an autism diagnosis automatically precluded a diagnosis of ADHD. Not so anymore. We now know the two conditions frequently occur together. In fact, nearly half of all kids with autism demonstrate ADHD symptoms — an added burden that undermines academic, behavioral, and social progress. Oh Domino By Lou Pastina

Van Morrison sang those words nearly 50 years ago and it remains his highest charting single ever. But I am talking about Domino Sugar, the company started in 1799 by British merchant, William Havemeyer. In 1859, William and brother, Frederick, set up shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn right on the East River. The building is landmarked today, although Domino moved out years ago and the buildings there were sold to developers, who promised that if they were able to develop the site for condos that they would build a public park for the residents. And so they did. Recently I brought my bike into Greenpoint and Williamsburg to stroll around my old

haunts. Even though I moved 35 years ago, I still consider myself a Greenpointer, even though it is changing rapidly. As many of you know, my dad still lives there in the house he was born in 90 years ago. My goal was to bike the waterfront from the Williamsburg Bridge to the Newton Creek. Greenpoint, if you didn’t know, is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water as the Creek wraps around into the Maspeth Kill (a Dutch word for waterway). I rode past the newly rebuilt soccer field at McCarren Park and the McCarren Park Pool on Bayard Street. The Park has enjoyed a renaissance with million-dollar condos surrounding it and a new hotel, the McCarren Park Hotel. There is a Russian church on the northwest corner of the park that was featured in an episode of Seinfeld once. I rode past all that to Kent Avenue and headed toward the Bridge. What was once a twoway street is now one-way and a shared space for bikers. I got down to the old Domino Plant and made a right to the appro-

priately-named River Street and there before me was the spanking new park. And what a park it is. With spectacular views up and down the East River, you can see the Statue of Liberty right through the three East River Bridges. Looking down river, underneath the Willie B, you can see the Brooklyn Navy Yard, now home to entrepreneurial companies. It is also home to Wallabout Bay, where more than 10,000 American prisoners died on British prison

ships during the Revolutionary War. In fact, more people died there than anywhere in the War. The remains of the prisoners washed up on shore for over a century after, and most of the remains are interred at Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument in Fort Greene Park. Although Domino is long gone, the original building still exists and there is a street named after Havemeyer bordering the north and south sides of Williamsburg. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of taking a ferry ride on the Mississippi River and about a mile or so up river from New Orleans was another Domino factory, almost its replica! I continued the ride back along Kent Avenue, past the many new condos being built along the riverfront toward Greenpoint. Just past Milton Street is a series of factories that have been converted into storefronts and down one alley, where as a youth I may have had a beer or two, was a sign for the Brooklyn Barge, a really cool spot out on the East River to have a beer in the late afternoon sun. Riding along Kent and looking up the streets of Greenpoint, I could see why it was named as such,

as the massive trees lining each street sloping up from the river provided a leafy respite for its residents. I finally reached Ash Street, where I was met by a huge condo unit, just where the Newton Creek cuts into the Point. I wondered, who lives in all these new units? There is a tremendous condo on India Street, right at the base of the new NYC Ferry pier. It’s amazing and even with the L train shutting down, there is no shortage of condos going up. I rode back to Box Street. This end of Greenpoint has streets

that go in alphabetical order. They must have gotten tired or ran out of letters at some point because it stops somewhere in the middle. Back to Box Street, there is now a hotel there called The Box House Hotel, an upscale place that overlooks the city. You can see it best from the Pulaski Bridge heading into LIC. I rode underneath the bridge on Box past the Spectrum plant toward the Sanitation Plant. I am sure you have seen this space-age plant as it looks like flying saucers have descended just in front of the new Kosciuszko Bridge. At the foot of the plant however, is a sign that leads to a walkway that guides you around the Newton Creek. In 2000, the city built a park here and it brings you close to the Creek. It is beautiful but desolate, and whose idea was it to put it behind the sanitation plant? Traveling back, I rode along Greenpoint Avenue to North Henry Street and made a right. Did I tell you this is where all the TV studios are? The Good Wife, Blue

Bloods and many more. They all work here now in the old Mobil factories converted into studios. They even have their own hotel, the Henry Norman Hotel, where the stars stay. Who knew? If you continue up North Henry, you will hit Monsignor McGolrick Park, where many scenes for Madam Secretary are filmed. It’s got a great statue dedicated to the building of the Monitor, the Civil War submarine that helped the North defeat the South. It was built in Greenpoint. So, there you have it, a nice bike ride in and around Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Oh Domino, roll me over, don’t you know, Domino!!! One final note, Van Morisson wrote that song in tribute to Fats Domino! Now you know.

While most people picture a desert to be hot and sandy, a desert is technically described as any place that receives less than 40 cm (16 inches) of precipitation per year.
