Paying it Forward to Texas — Ways to Help By Katie McFadden
Having seen the effects of Hurricane Sandy, locals know what those in Texas are going through with Hurricane Harvey right now. Texas needs help and Rockaway is stepping up to the plate to pay it forward. There are several ways to help those in Texas. Texas is feeling the wrath of Hurricane Harvey since it hit last weekend. The storm has caused more than 30 deaths and has dropped more than 50 inches of rain, causing severe flooding around the Houston area. Here in Rockaway, those who experienced Sandy are rallying to help those in need in Texas. In the weeks after Sandy, gift cards were put to good use. There are several gift card collections going on. Maura Buckley of Operation Kid Comfort is collecting gift cards for Home Depot, Lowes, Bed Bath and Beyond, Visa, AMEX, MasterCard, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Target, Amazon, Sears and more. All cards can be dropped off or mailed to Buck-
ley at 211-60 Breezy Point Boulevard, Breezy Point, NY 11697 by September 15. Theresa Flanigan of the Breezy Point Cooperative is collecting gift cards for Operation Blessing. Gift cards can be dropped off at the BP Coop office (202-30 Rockaway Point Blvd.) by September 8, along with any letters of encouragement. Rockaway WISH and the Graybeards are also leading a gift card collection. You can drop off gift cards at the WISH office (533 Beach 126th Street) or the Graybeards office (129-04 Newport Ave). Local businesses are also stepping up to the plate. Local gym CROM Physical Culture is holding a gift card collection through Sunday, September 3. Gym member Richy G. will be driving down to Texas to distribute them. On Sunday, September 10, at 12 p.m., yoga studio Rockaway Love is hosting a charity yoga class. $25 donations to take the class will be donated to Team Rubicon, which was instrumental after Sandy. It may be Labor Day weekend,
but Broad Channel will be utilizing its Mardi Gras parade to collect donations. When the parade rolls through around noon on Monday, September 4, Broad Channel Athletic Club mayor, Tim Hanning will have a donation bucket for people to donate money and gift cards, which will be sent to Rapid Hope, which is in Texas, providing meals to those in need. Matthew Alessi, of Rockaway Park, is currently living in New Orleans and will be heading to the Houston area at the end of the week to distribute donations that he is collecting through a GoFundMe campaign. Donations can be made at www.gofundme. com/rockaway-harvey-relief. If you want to donate items, our neighbors in Long Beach are holding a supply collection. They’re looking for cleaning supplies, first aid items, personal hygiene products, non-perisha-
ble food, baby items, gift cards, flashlights, batteries and blankets. They’re not accepting clothing donations at this time. Donations can be dropped off at the Long Beach Recreation Center at 150 West Bay Drive from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but act quick as they’re only collecting through Friday, September 1, so that supplies can be delivered quickly. After their experiences in Rockaway, many would recommend not donating to the America Red Cross. There are some better options that got the job done after Hurricane Sandy and are already helping out in Texas. BEACH 116TH FIREHOUSE MOVE CLOSE TO A DONE DEAL By Katie McFadden
The Beach 116th firehouse move to the old HSBC bank is one step closer to reality. Despite dissent from Community Board 14, on August 23, the NYC Department of City Planning gave the okay. The FDNY has filed an application to relocate the firehouse for Engine 268/ Ladder 137 to the bayside property down the block, where the old Ram’s Horn diner and most recently, an HSBC bank was located. Back in June, a majority of CB14 gave disapproval of the plan and recommended the FDNY look into the old Long Island Power Authority lot at Beach 112th Street. The application then went on to Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, who approved the idea, as long as the FDNY would look into the LIPA site and that the old landmarked firehouse would be turned into a cultural and arts center.
After damage incurred from Hurricane Sandy, the FDNY determined that the three-story building on Beach 116th, built in 1913, is no longer suitable for a firehouse. The FDNY wants to relocate to the old HSBC bank site and construct a two-story, 13,000 square-foot resilient building at the site, along with ten parking spots. The building would be elevated to meet FEMA flood resiliency standards. Last Wednesday, City Planning approved the move, finding the proposed site to be more effective for serving Rockaway. They agreed that moving the firehouse to Beach 112th would increase response times uptown. City Planning recommended that they FDNY work with the community to determine how the old firehouse would be used. The proposal now goes on to City Council and could then face mayoral review, but the Mayor’s approval is not necessary for the plan to go forward.

Keep in mind that the beaches are open and staffed for another week—until September 10. ***** Senator Ted Cruz and Senator John Cornyn of Texas and six House members from that state voted against the Sandy relief bill. They are now seeking federal relief as a result of Hurricane Harvey. When an aid package is voted on we expect New York reps to do the right thing and help the people devastated by this horrific storm. ***** Flooding was a primary contributor to the devastation in Texas. Flooding and flood insurance will soon be a major topic facing Congress. The National Flood Insurance Program must
be reauthorized as it is set to expire September 30. This is not a Republican vs. Democrat issue. The NFIP is in debt and there are strong voices against further federal commitment to the program. Many would like to “fix” the program in place. We hope legislators will read and understand any new laws or provisions. The infamous Biggert-Waters Act was passed and even the bill’s sponsors, Judy Biggert (R-Ill) and Maxine Waters (D- Cal), were surprised by its impact, including the fact that some homeowner policies would skyrocket to $30,000 per year. After a grassroots effort (in which Rockaway residents played a huge role) the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act was passed, which repealed much of Biggert-Waters. Senator Chuck Schumer issued a press release Wednesday calling for the NFIP to be extended beyond the September 30 deadline and that needed changes can be worked on after the extension. What Happened to Rockaway’s Volunteer Emergency Ambulance? By Kami-Leigh Agard
You have an emergency and desperately call 911 for help. As the minutes painfully roll by, wouldn’t it be great to have an emergency backup service to call? Breezy Point and Broad Channel have their own volunteer ambulance services, both exclusively serving their residents. However, what about other areas in Rockaway, extending from Belle Harbor to Far Rockaway? You may be surprised to know that one does exist, but it is inoperative. The Rockaway Volunteer Ambulance Search and Ambulance Corps (RVAC) is a non-profit organization, founded by local resident and experienced emergency medical technician (EMT), Ronnie Murchinson-Rivera, that according to its website, “was established to provide efficient ambulance service to the Rockaway community in ad-
dition to the city ambulances. We also will be doing Beach & Bay Rescue, where we will have a special team go through training with the coast guard to learn how to be a part of our rescue team.” In September 2015, Murchinson-Rivera gave a compelling testimony about RVAC’s mission to Community Board 14 (CB 14), and requested a letter of support from the board for renewal of its state license. He stated that “there are only three fully-staffed ambulances for the entire peninsula, and when they are servicing emergency calls, the rest of the peninsula is left vulnerable.” CB 14 unanimously voted to give their letter of support to RVAC. However, this past month, Murchinson-Rivera was honored with a proclamation by City councilmen, Donovan Richards and Eric Ulrich. Some locals were rankled, question-

ing why he was bestowed the honor. One local, who wished to be unnamed had a plethora of questions, “Why did he receive this honor from the City Council? What has RVAC really done in the community? What about the funding they received? Where are the ambulances? When they are called to cover local events with emergency services or just to even have a table, they never come through. Didn’t RVAC receive state funding? Isn’t he moving to Florida?” After reaching out to both councilmen’s offices, the NYS Department of Health (DOH) and Murchinson-Rivera himself, here is what we uncovered. Ulrich’s office stated, “Ronnie Murchinson-Rivera received this proclamation because he is the epitome of a good citizen, having dedicated his life to helping others. In addition to his role as president and chief of the
RVAC, when Superstorm Sandy devastated the Rockaways, Ronnie rose to the occasion. He organized a food and toy drive for his neighbors in need. His tireless commitment to our community has not gone unnoticed.” (Note as of press time, Richards’ office did not respond). Regarding why RVAC is currently non-operational and the other abounding questions, including his future with the organization, Murchinson-Rivera explained. “I was honored with the proclamation for my volunteer efforts on the peninsula, including Hurricane Sandy disaster efforts though my family was displaced. I also volunteer with the local schools and sit on the Community Education Council. “Though RVAC is inactive as an emergency service, we do Continued on page 7

We received a few grants from Donovan’s office and Williams Energy, the builder of the Rockaway Lateral Pipeline, of which since 2012 totals to under $40K. “We acquired three ambulances fully-stocked and two supervisor vehicles, which due to local parking difficulties are housed in a Brooklyn lot. After first submitting our paperwork to NYS in 2015, we were denied and appealed, and are now waiting for them to grant us the Certificate of Need so we can operate as an emergency service. We can’t respond to emergency calls until we get approval.” RT contacted the DOH to find out the status of RVAC’s certification and if state funding was awarded. They responded, “On June 28, 2016, the Regional EMS Council of NYC denied the am-
THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 2017 bulance operating authority application submitted by RVAC. The applicant filed an appeal, which was sent to the Department’s Bureau of Adjudication. On August 24, 2017, the administrative law judge issued a report and order in the case, which is expected to be on the agenda at the September 27, 2017 meeting of the State EMS Council. The DOH has not provided any funding to this entity.” In regards to moving to Florida and the future of RVAC, Murchinson-Rivera said, “I just received an exciting job opportunity to be a sheriff in Orlando, Florida. Though I will be in Florida, I am still going to work remotely with RVAC volunteers and board members. We have two cochiefs and two lieutenants, who are more than capable to step in. Weekend Art At RAA
This weekend the Rockaway Artists Alliance offers one more chance to catch its newest exhibition. The RAA Pop-Up Art Show, run for two weeks only, packs a lot in a limited frame. More than a dozen artworks by a variety of artists fill RAA’s sunfilled gallery at Fort Tilden. From glassworks to sculpture, works on metal and more, Pop-Up shows off a cross section of RAA artists. Represented are works from members, RAA printed studio artists, T-7 studio artists, guest artists and more, plus large-scale works created exclusively for RAA’s Forbidden Fruit exhibition.
The stunning murals were created right in RAA’s gallery and made possible by RAA’s first National Endowment for Arts grants, awarded after a nationwide competition. Last week along with Pop-Up, RAA hosted two very well attended events. The weekend included a reading and book signing with Rockaway author Jill Eisenstadt and her new book, Swell. There was also the Rockaway premiere of From The Ashes, plus a Q&A with director Michael Bonfiglio. The National Geographic distributed documentary screening was sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and Bloomberg Philanthropies. This weekend, RAA is inviting all to take a break, come to its galleries and enjoy a personal encounter with the arts. Gallery hours are Saturday/ Sunday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Survey Gives Ferry Thumbs Up ROCKAWAY RIDERS SEE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT By Katie McFadden
A recent survey by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) claims that 93 percent of riders of the citywide ferry system are satisfied with the service. However, we asked Rockaway residents what they really think about the ferry, and many say it could use some work. NYCEDC staff distributed surveys to riders aboard NYC Ferry vessels over two weekends and eight weekdays during five time blocks: weekday morning, midday, and evening, and weekend morning and afternoon. Findings are based on 1,345 total responses. The survey asked people to rate their satisfaction with the ferry on a scale of one to 10, among other questions. The results show that 93 percent of those surveyed rated the ferry a seven or above, with 66 percent of those giving it a perfect 10. It
also found that most riding the ferry were commuters from the five boroughs. On the Rockaway route, during peak hours, it was found that 47 percent of riders use the ferry at least four times a week, 12 percent use it two to three times per week and 41 percent use it less than twice a week. In a press release, NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett commented on the seemingly positive results, saying, “We’re excited that after less than four months, the vast majority of riders have had a positive experience with NYC Ferry. We’re also seeing the service meeting our goal of supporting commuters around the five boroughs.” The survey didn’t allow for comments, so The Rockaway Times reached out to residents to find out what they think. Some, like Emer Casey, believe “it is a great alternative for res-
idents.” However, many found that it is not without its faults, with overcrowded boats resulting in people getting left behind at the dock if you don’t get there early, being an ongoing problem for riders. “During rush hours, coming home is a nightmare,” Antoinette Kennedy said. “I take it every weekday to and from work. I have to make sure I’m at the dock 30 to 40 minutes prior to make the ferry and even then it’s not a guarantee. I’ve been left behind a few times.” Patricia Anne said, “I commute daily on the ferry and love the ride. I do not like the fact that in the evening, I have to get there 30 minutes early to ensure I’m on the boat.” Some have given up because of this issue. “I stopped taking it because the lines were so long. I just take the train now,” Gregory Stanislaus said. All seem to agree that more boats are needed during peak
times. “Riding the ferry is terrific, but it doesn’t serve the needs of residents. The city needs to accommodate residents by adding more boats during rush hour,” Deborah O’Shea said. “They should put more ferries in during rush hours, especially on Thursday and Fridays,” Patricia Anne added. Some are simply looking forward to less crowded boats after beach season is over. “I will take the ferry all winter and I’m looking forward to shorter lines. There’s nothing like sitting upstairs in the breeze and throwing your cares into the sea,” Patricia Anne said. Due to high demand, NYC Ferry recently announced that it will be adding capacity to three of its twenty boats. Spreading Kindness By Katie McFadden
With so much craziness going on in the world, why not spread a little kindness? Locals around the area are doing so through the Kindness Rocks project. If you come across a painted rock or seashell around town—especially in Broad Channel and Roxbury, it may have been placed there for a purpose—to spread joy and kindness throughout the community. Many are being inspired by The Kindness Rocks Project, a movement that started in 2015 by Megan Murphy of Massachusetts. Murphy started decorating rocks and writing inspiring messages on them and leaving them around the beaches of Cape Cod. Her goal was to spread comfort and hope to those who found them—and it worked. A friend found a rock on a bad day and told Murphy how it improved her mood, so Murphy continued to leave little rocks of hope around the beach. With a suggestion from
her daughter, she added a hashtag to the movement, #thekindnessrocksproject. The movement soon went viral across America and to other countries, and has found its way to the local area with residents in Broad Channel, Roxbury and Breezy Point running their own similar projects, using both rocks, and seashells. In early August, Kindness Rocks came to Broad Channel. Kimberly Lagos, formerly
of Broad Channel, got the idea from people doing it in her town of Patchogue, and wanted to share it with her old hometown. She started a Facebook page “Broad Channel Rock Hunt #BroadChannelRocks” with a description saying, “Brighten someone's day with beautiful painted found items. Paint rocks, shells, sticks, leaves and rehide them in your neighborhood and favorite places! Keep ones you find or rehide! Just re-
place if you collect to keep the fun going!” The page encourages people to post clues as to where to find the painted items and pictures once they find them. “I set up a Facebook page and dropped off some rocks in Broad Channel that my children and I painted to get the ball rolling,” Lagos said. I prided myself on the fact that when local, state and national elections rolled around, I was more than superficially aware of all the players and their documented positions on the myriad of issues that concerned not only

As always, each election cycle brought with it its own brand of political craziness, which drove the majority of us nuts, but I always advised those who know me that the insanity would pass after the election was settled and the politicians would quickly get down to the pressing business at hand. Sadly, the routine, but always temporary pre-election political craziness has today evolved into a continual demonstrated lunacy on the part of all the players (politicians, media, pundits, celebrities, activist groups and university professors and students) accompanied by a clearly demonstrated impairment in their thought process, can actually be described today as political dementia. Mary Louis Adds Pre-Med and More The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) is proud to announce the establishment of several new and exciting initiatives designed to provide young women with increased opportunities to achieve academic success, develop leadership skills, set career goals and form strategies to achieve those goals. Successful completion of a program, all of which begin September 2017, will be recognized at graduation with a special designation certificate. Pre-Med/Health Program - Available to highly motivated students interested in pursuing study and career in medicine, dentistry, nursing, veterinary science, pharmacy, physical therapy and other health professions. Advanced study in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology and Math will be required. An additional requirement will be a course in Greek and Latin for Medical Terminology. Students will be required to take part in a summer internship offered by such hospitals as New York Presbyterian – Weill Cornell Medical Center, Lenox Hill Hospital or Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. (Students may also make arrangements with other hospitals in other locations.) Scientific lectures and field trips will be required as is membership in the New York State Science Honor Society. STEM - An intensive study of the STEM areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math will include honors levels of Geometry, Chemistry, Algebra II, and Physics. Senior electives include Computer Science, Robotics, Pre-Engineering, Greek and Latin for Scientific Study and Independent Science Research. Students will take part in local and national STEM competitions, attend science-based field trips and forums and serve as a STEM tutor. This program is highlighted by our new Pan-
zardi Women in Engineering Scholarship which provides a partial tuition award at TMLA along with mentoring and internship opportunities around Silicon Valley in California. Art – Students who demonstrate talent and interest in Art may pursue a separate Art major program. Courses include Studio Art, Drawing, Painting, Graphic Arts, and AP Studio Art. An internship in a museum such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art or a specific art gallery is also required. Music - Students interested in the special designation program in music may choose a Music or Vocal program. A concentration in Music will take Music in Our Lives, History of Music Styles and Theory and AP Music Theory and register for the orchestra. Students who wish to follow a concentration in Vocal Performance must register for Vocal Techniques in Freshman Year, register for the Glee Club or Orchestra. Private lessons in Music will be available. This program is highlighted by our MacLean Vocal Scholar Award which provides a selected student with professional vocal training and attendance at a performance at the MET. Dual-Language/International Studies Program- In addition to a three or four year study of a Language Other Than English (French, Italian, Latin, Spanish) students will take one or two years of a third language. Students will also study both current and historical events pertaining to the area of language study and produce an independent project on a selected topic. Physical Education and Wellness – The Physical Education program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in personal health, fitness and lifetime activities. The special designation program will include certified training in CPR and experience as a referee.

An Aspirin A Day… Aspirin, chemically acetylsalicylic acid or ASA, is called a wonder drug and has been in use since antiquity. Aspirin is a pain reliever, fever reducer, is used as a blood clot preventer, and is recommended for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). One of its drawbacks, however, is that it can cause bleeding in the gastrointestinal system (GI bleeding). A common misconception is that aspirin causes stomach or intestinal bleeding by directly irritating or eroding the lining of the stomach or intestines. Actually aspirin inhibits the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins
enhance the inner lining of the stomach and intestines and protect those organs from damage from stomach acids and digestive enzymes. The reduction of prostaglandin production makes the stomach and intestinal lining more susceptible to erosion and bleeding from these acids and enzymes. Aspirin is used in prevention of CVD due to its anti-blood clotting or blood-thinning effects. Aspirin poisons platelets making them unable to stick to each other and form a clot. One of the problems in this use is aspirin’s short half-life, or the amount of time it takes the blood level to
reach 50 percent of the maximum level. The bone marrow constantly makes platelets but the half-life of aspirin is only about 20 minutes. While aspirin is rapidly absorbed – peak blood levels occur about 40 minutes after ingestion of uncoated aspirin and five hours after ingestion of enteric-coated aspirin – it is also rapidly removed from the bloodstream so the anti-platelet activity may only last one hour after ingestion while the marrow continues to make platelets for the remaining 23 hours. It is for this reason that some experts are now recommending dosing aspirin two or three times daily at lower doses. There is also a new medication available called Durlaza which is a slow-release aspirin product that releases aspirin slowly, over many hours, making its anti-platelet function much better. Aspirin does not work for everyone though. Some people with inflammatory states such as diabetes, smoking, metabolic syndrome, and post-coronary artery bypass grafting have large, more active platelets that are less
Page 21 susceptible to aspirin. Platelet size is measured by an automated complete blood count, or CBC. The MPV (mean platelet volume) is a measurement of platelet size. Normal values are usually 7.5 to 11.5. Someone with an MPV over 12 will have larger, more active platelets that are more likely to form a clot and less likely to be susceptible to aspirin. While low-dose aspirin has been proven to reduce the risk of repeat cardiovascular events and death in those who have CVD, its use in primary prevention of CVD in those at risk to develop it is still being studied. In addition the use of enteric-coated aspirin is being questioned for two reasons. Firstly, coated aspirin still has the risk of bleeding because it also reduces prostaglandin production plus coated aspirin has less aspirin available for absorption because the coating reduces the amount of available aspirin. Is It Really All in Your Head? By Lou Pastina
How are you feeling today? Have you been working out; eating right; getting enough sleep? These are the questions we either ask ourselves or are asked of us every week. And so, we try, sometimes, despite the occasional Oreo, to eat better, work out, even if it is just walking more and sleeping better. But no matter how hard we try sometimes we just don’t feel right. So, we look for other answers, because the last thing in
the world you want to hear is that maybe it’s just all in your head! So, what do we try? Well if you look to the East, maybe you try acupuncture? There are a few practitioners at the beach who are very good. If the thought of someone sticking needles into your body while you are laying down reminds you of your marriage, then perhaps it isn’t for you. But acupuncture does provide several tangible benefits as part of a wellness plan. Coupled with a massage
every once in a while, one can achieve a peacefulness without emptying a case of Coors Lights. For others, yoga provides not only a physical release through stretching but a meditative experience that helps one focus more acutely. Practiced on a regular basis, flexibility is improved, balance is restored, and restfulness is achieved. But if “Oming” freaks you out because you think you might get brainwashed into wearing orange robes and asking for donations on the lower east side, then perhaps yoga is not for you. Although this is not a bad retirement plan, trust me. I have also heard of people trying cryogenics. What’s that you say? Well it’s the use of nitrogen infused cold chambers to chill the body, restoring the body’s natural defenses against joint-related diseases. In addition, high-performing athletes use this practice to improve performance levels. While the treatments last only three minutes, it does get quite cold, and you may question the
Page 29 benefit afterwards. In my case, I actually felt better afterwards but would be hard-pressed to tell you why I actually did. Although you may be nervous about certain Seinfeld related “shrinkage” syndromes, as it can get quite chilly! So, treatment may not be for some men. Of course, any activity that gets your endorphins fired up brings on a general feeling of euphoria that is hard to beat. And generally, when you are tired physically, sleep follows more easily. So as the summer winds down and the kids get ready to go back to school and you get your kingdoms back to yourselves, maybe treat yourself to some “me” time to regenerate the body and spirit after a terrific summer. Get a massage, try yoga or an acupuncture treatment, or maybe a cryogenic treatment, maybe go vegan for a week to see how that feels. And of course, if you do all that and still don’t feel just right, remember, it’s probably only all in your head anyway!

The First Annual 100th Precinct Cops Vs. Kids Basketball Game in Broad Channel was a huge success on Friday, August 11. The Shamrocks from the Summer Youth Basketball League took on officers from the 100th Precinct and both teams brought their best. There was plenty of dazzling passes, outstanding shooting and amazing plays as the Boys in Blue outscored the BC Teens in the first of what hopes to be an annual event. Thanks to all the Officers
This is what it’s all about: the local cops and teens interacting with each other on a positive note, building a foundation of trust and friendship. The officers showed that they are truly interested in helping all of the communities they serve by attending this event in their off time. It was a great day for softball as we had a crowd of about 100 people turn out to watch the Mudsharks take on Morning Wood in the Championship for the third straight year and fifth time out of the last six years. Mudsharks had the edge over MW, beating them three out of the four times they squared off in the final. The Sharks looked good early on in Game 1 as they scored three runs in the 2nd inning and then another four runs in the third. A couple errors from the Morning Woods’ infield and timely hitting from the Mudsharks had them out to an early 7-0 lead. Morning Wood had plenty of chances to score but solid Mudsharks defense shut down any rally that the Wood tried to get going. Every time MW would plate a run the Mudsharks came back in the next inning and
scored again. The Mudsharks won Game 1 easily, 10-3. In Game 2 and batting first, Morning Wood came out the gates hot as the first seven batters all singled as they scored five runs to put the pressure on the Mudsharks. Solid defense from both teams kept both teams off the scoreboard until the 6th inning as Morning Wood would score another four runs to go up 9-0. The Sharks scored a run in the bottom of 6th but that was all as Morning Wood won Game 2 by a score of 9-1. With the series tied a game apiece it came down to a deciding Game 3 for the Championship. With the title on the line, both teams started Game 3 with some fireworks. Mudsharks struck first in the top of the 1st with three runs. In the bottom of the 1st Morning Wood would answer

Now, I’m a happy and optimistic person by nature, inclined to tend to my own business and not be influenced unduly by the words or actions of others — especially those whose views are extreme and/ or downright irrational. But every now and then I get fed up, and at the moment — perhaps it is the heat, which I find I like less and less as I get older — I am fed up with the cynical anti-intellectualism that has perverted the political discourse of our nation and made it wellnigh impossible to enact public policy solutions to the plethora of real economic and social issues with which we currently are confronted. I’m fed up with kicking the can of reality down the road in the service of political agendas fueled by fantasy, myth and outright untruth. I’m fed up with the elevation of willful ignorance to a virtue. I think I reached the end of my shrinking tether to patience when I had to suffer through weeks, if not months, of others telling me that it was necessary for them to dictate to me who among us

could use what restroom because, after all, I was gender biased. Truth be told, I actually know a little something about gender fluidity having lived for a long time as a male trapped inside a female's body...at least until I was born! When I find my blood pressure going through the roof, thinking that the world is going to hell in a hand basket, rather than surrender to anger, I tend to sit back and work the problem to discover a solution and guess what? I found one! When you have a couple of hours to kill, do your blood pressure a favor. Rather than read the news, watch the talk shows, or blindly view the nonsensical ravings of the Facebook crowd urging you to go out and tear down a statue, sit down and tune your television to the Hallmark Channel. It's feel-good TV. There's no sex, gratuitous violence and gore. Hallmark movies and series have happy endings. The main characters do the right thing. The problems get worked out. The guy and girl, whatever their age or grumpiness level at the start,
always end up together and the wrongdoer (if there is one) is always identified and dealt with. Turn on Hallmark and everyone ends the show smiling. You get lots of easy-on-yourmind films where the characters always find a way to work together to save their town or store or farm. I am very serious when I tell you the Hallmark Channel works for me. I know many of you will say to yourself that I am simply burying my head in the sand. Maybe you're right but at this point in my life all I can say is give me a shovel because this column is finished and until I wake up to find that all the players have finally decided to venture forth from their safe spaces, pull up their adult boxers, briefs and panties and start acting with a modicum of common sense to undertake a spirited, but civil discourse, to address the myriad problems we are facing as a nation, I am off to watch a Garage Sale Mystery movie on Hallmark! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

with three runs of their own. Then Morning Wood would score three more in the 2nd and another two runs in the 3rd taking a commanding 8-3 lead. Stellar defense from Morning Wood stopped the Sharks as they threatened to score in the late innings. The Mudsharks were able to score one in the 5th but that was all as Morning Wood went on to win Game 3, 8-4 and win their 2nd straight Championship and third overall. After the game was played we handed out a few trophies and awards. Chris Long of Old Head took home the “Jackass of the Year” Award for the third straight year. Taking home the Kevin Gill Award (League MVP) was Richie McCarthy of the Mudsharks. The Bobby McKinley Award (Playoff MVP) went to Skyler Ward of Morning Wood as he went 7-9 at the plate and played a great first base. Starting this year we are using one
