Teamwork to the Rescue Two lucky Neponsit boys who got pulled out a little too far into the ocean on their paddle boards on Saturday, July 30, are safe thanks to the actions of some quick acting heroes. Just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, the two 13-year-old boys on paddle boards drifted a little too far out,

and after an exhausting attempt to get back to shore, they alerted lifeguards that they were in trouble by waving their paddles. As an emergency call was put in and first responders were on their way to Beach 135th Street, lifeguard Amber Walters swam out to get one of the victims on the pad-

A MEMBER OF THE BLUE GONE TOO SOON By Katie McFadden

A family and the NYPD community is in mourning after the loss of one of their own. At around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, off duty Detective Brendan McVeigh was found in his Belle Harbor apartment with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Detective McVeigh later died from his injuries. According to police, McVeigh, 28, was first discovered by his fiancée in their Beach 138th apartment on Sunday night. Officers responded and found a gun near his body. He was rushed by EMS to Kings County Hospital to be treated, but Detective McVeigh couldn’t be saved. The next evening on Monday, August 1, the 9th Precinct, where McVeigh had worked, announced the news of his passing on social media. “With much sorrow, the 9th precinct mourns the passing of Detective Brendan McVeigh. Brendan started his career as a patrol officer here in the 9th precinct and recently got promoted to the rank of Detective with the Ninth Precinct Squad. Detective McVeigh did his job with passion and was loved by all of us here in the 9th precinct. Our sincere hope is that the all knowing Almighty console his friends and family in this difficult period. We love you Brendan. Rest in perfect peace,” a Facebook post by the 9th Precinct read. McVeigh’s family and fellow officers gathered outside of the hospital on Wednesday, August 3 to salute as he was transported to his final resting place. McVeigh will be laid to rest in the Hamptons on Saturday, August 6. McVeigh joined the NYPD in 2015 and worked for the 9th Precinct in the East Village. In 2018, McVeigh was recognized by the Greenwich Village-Chelsea Chamber of Commerce as the 9th Precinct’s Officer of the Year. Late last year, McVeigh was promoted to Detective. McVeigh was

a longtime resident of Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan, until he moved to Rockaway earlier this year. After the announcement of his passing, the NYPD and Detectives Endowment Association both shared information on resources that provide support to officers dealing with mental health issues. “We are saddened to announce that the NYPD has suffered a tragic death of one of our detectives yesterday,” the NYPD shared. “To anyone who may be struggling, know that there is support available. Behind each of these resources are people that care about your well-being.” The DEA shared, “Today, we mourn the tragic loss of our brother Detective, who died by suicide. The DEA is at his family’s side providing support. Please remember, you’re never alone. Help is available 24/7. Text BLUE to 741741. Contact the DEA office for more confidential resources.” It is believed Detective McVeigh is the second NYPD officer to die by suicide this year. A 52-year-old officer with 18 years on the job was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a home in Long Island in June. These latest incidents come after several NYPD suicides in recent years. Last year, three officers took their own lives. In 2020, four officers died by suicide. In 2019, 10 officers took their own lives. Following 2019, the city took steps to step up services to support NYPD officers who need help. Finest Care, a program offering free confidential counseling for police officers was established. The program now runs through Northwell Health. An officer who wishes to utilize this service can call 646-697-2020. The NYPD also offers a service to text BLUE to 741741. The state also recently implemented the 988 number for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for anyone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. In the event of an emergency, dial 911.

A car in the ocean is not something you see every day, but it was news that barely made a splash last weekend. It likely went unnoticed by many as the car was removed before the beaches opened, but some did notice the odd sight. At around 5 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, someone called 911 to report the vehicle in the ocean. Police responded for a water rescue and noticed the car in the water.

A Night Out with the 100th By Katie McFadden

Locals and law enforcement agencies from near and far filled the Beach 94th parking lot on Tuesday, August 2 for the 100th Precinct’s National Night Out Against Crime event. According to 100th Precinct Community Council President Kathy Heavey, the event was an overall success. Nobody went hungry as the night included a barbecue donated by Deirdre Maeves Market in Breezy Point and Bagel & Barista on Beach 116th Street. “We thank them for their generosity," Heavey said. The parking lot was full of bouncy houses and other amusements for the kids, made possible by Call A Head Corp. And resources were aplenty. “Lots of organizations and businesses tabled and had tons of information,” Heavey said. “I loved seeing the FDNY CPR Unit teaching potentially lifesaving CPR

2 Killed in Gun Violence Incidents By Katie McFadden

It was a sad week for gun violence across the peninsula. Among several different incidents, a Far Rockaway rapper and a 14-year-old Arverne teen were both killed. The stream of recent gun violence began last Wednesday, July 27 when gunshots were heard around Beach 67th Street and Rockaway Freeway. Police found an 18-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg. A gunman had allegedly fired shots into the train, striking the young man. He was transported to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition. This incident remains under investigation and no arrests have been made. On Saturday, July 30, just after 11:30 p.m., a woman was shot twice near Beach 38th and Beach Channel Drive. She drove herself

Just after 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 31, police from the 101st Precinct responded to a call of a man shot on Beach 38th Street near Bayswa-

ter Park. Anthony Edwards, 36, had been shot just a few blocks from his home. He was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. Edwards was also known as a local rapper named King Jigg. On Monday, August 1 at around 9:30 p.m., officers from the 100th Precinct responded to a 911 call for a person shot at a home in the vicinity of Hillmeyer Avenue and Beach 69th Street. Upon arrival officers found an 18-year-old male with gunshot wounds to both his face and hand. The victim was immediately transported to Jamaica Hospital where he is listed as critical condition. The following morning on August 2 at 7:15 a.m., officers responded to an unconscious juvenile male in the driveway of a home in the same vicinity of the shooting. The 14-year-old boy named Shawn Frye, found with at least one gun shot wound, was pronounced

A Night Out With the 101 The community came out strong for National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 2. The 101st Precinct held their annual event at O’Donohue Park on Beach 17th Street. With food, drinks, games, music, entertainment, toys for the kids and plenty of community resources, the 101’s NNO was a fun night of unity and community. Plenty of guests stopped by to help celebrate the occasion including Senator James Sanders, Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson, Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers and even Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell. The night also provided the community an opportunity to connect with new 101 Precinct Commanding Officer Captain Timothy Shulz.

The Best Dressed Author in Rockaway By Katie McFadden

For the past five years, it’s been hard to ignore the tall guy in the flashy suits dancing just about everywhere in Rockaway. In a 2018 interview with the man behind the getup, The Rockaway Times officially dubbed him, “The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway.” Last week, a book by the same name hit online bookstores with proceeds going to charity. Owen Loof can now call himself “The Best Dressed Author in Rockaway.” From the boardwalk concessions to events at the Knights, parades and pubs, it seems Owen Loof is just about everywhere nowadays, and his wardrobe keeps growing. What started with a flamingo print suit, has turned into a closet full of options for every occasion. How did the “Best Dressed Man in Rockaway” begin? Well, he was always in there. His book’s cover photo at age 18 is evidence. It just took some character development over the years. There are a number of things that Loof can point to as a contributing factor to his fashionably fun antics, but he says it all began with his Catholic high school days in the ‘60s. And you can read all about it in his first fictional novel, “The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway: The Brooklyn Prep Years.” When the pandemic came roaring in, shutting social life down in 2020, Loof was a well-dressed man with nowhere to go. So he got to writing. And there’s no better researched subject than yourself. Loof started jotting down short stories from his early life, some that came from memories of his own experiences, some he adapted from the experiences of friends, and others, he plainly made up, taking creative license on his own life story. It was so much a work of fiction, that Loof started writing it with fake names, from friends to crushes to even the school he went to, “Hillbrook Prep” and his own name, “Oliver Leeds.” After consulting with others, Loof was advised to “make it Rockaway,” by none other than Rockaway Times publisher Kevin Boyle. “It was originally The Life and Loves of Oliver Leeds” and was going to be one continuous story, but Kevin convinced me to make it Rockaway. Everyone

said, well, Oliver Leeds isn’t ‘The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway,’ so I changed it to Owen,” Loof said. In the preface of his book, Loof credits much of the Rockaway Times team for helping to make it possible. “Without The Rockaway Times, I would not have been given the title of ‘Best Dressed Man in Rockaway,’” he said. The RT team also had a helping hand in the early editing process. Instead of making it a continuous story, Loof found his book would be better suited in parts. “The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway” series will be three parts, at least. This first installation, which Loof says could be a stand-alone book, focuses on his high school years at Brooklyn Prep. The next two, half of which he’s already written, will focus on the love life of Owen Loof, ending with the tale of him and his wife, Peggy, who unfortunately passed away in 2016, and who Owen dedicates his book to. Since Loof still needs to pen part two, the love stories may have to wait ‘til next year. But The Brooklyn Prep years offer plenty of laughs. Loof’s book may strike up memories for those who went to Brooklyn Prep with stories of antics involving classmates and teachers (whose names have been changed.) It may strike up memories of old Rockaway with tales of the “Royal Cottages” bungalow colony and the old Irish Circle. But mostly, Loof hopes it resonates with anyone that is willing to

laugh. “I hope someone in Iowa who doesn’t know me reads the stories and goes ‘This guy’s nothing, you know what I did to my teacher in high school?’ I hope it conjures up memories for people of their high school days. I hope people can relate to some of the stories and get something out of it reflecting on their own life,” Loof said. “This book is about high school and how Owen’s personality changed. When he started Brooklyn Prep, he was this shy, introverted person. There was some personality in there, but in this big school with all these smart people, he feels a little lost until he meets Tom Collins. Things we did together in freshman year changed Owen’s whole personality and when Tom Collins left the school, Owen realizes he has to take on the mantle of Tom, take what he told him and take it up a notch while finding his own niche,” Loof said. “In high school, there’s nerds, jocks, etc, and Owen had to find what people would remember him for and these stories are the things he did. When I speak to old classmates, they say the

only thing I cared about was people laughing. I didn’t care if they were laughing at me or laughing with me, as long as people were laughing. The things I did were to make people laugh, to have a good time, to have fun.” They’re qualities that the real-life Owen Loof takes with him when he puts on the suits and brings laughs and smiles as “The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway.” Not only is Loof’s book made to bring laughs. It’s all for a good cause. Setting aside enough to cover the costs of self-publishing, Loof has decided to donate 80% of the proceeds from his book to four different charities. They include Tunnel to Towers, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Rockaway Graybeards and the charity of a friend Owen mentions in his book, Hope House Ministries. Each charity will get 20% of proceeds. “The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway: The Brooklyn Prep Years” is now available on Amazon. Loof plans on hosting book signing events in the near future, where he’ll have copies available for purchase.

Far Rock Community Church Celebrates New Facility

“This is a great day in Far Rockaway,” stated Rev. Dr. Les Mullings on Tuesday, August 2 at Far Rockaway Community Church of the Nazarene’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new state-of-the-art facility, located at 1411 Central Avenue. Local pols and scores of community supporters and residents came to rejoice over the church’s newly built center, to which Lisa George, district manager for Senator James Sanders Jr.'s office, exclaimed, “I can’t believe this is in Far Rockaway. This is something our community needs.” Since 1986, FRCC has been a longstanding hub for care and service in the Far Rockaway community, especially during Hurricane Sandy, in which it was an official FEMA site, and the COVID pandemic. However, Rev. Dr. Mullings, who has pastored FRCC for over twenty years, had a vision for the church to serve the community much more. “This project took us about seven to 10 years. Some may remember this site as the old Mel’s Chevrolet garage. We bought a piece of property here and did four or five renovations to get it to where we could have worship and meet as an assembly hall. And now with the help of local pols, the developer, countless community supporters and church parishioners, getting this building to where it is now allows us to continue our work and mission to be a hub for the Far Rockaway community,” Dr. Millings said. “I just feel so fulfilled, not just for me, but the community at large.” The seating capacity in the church’s sanctuary is 665. Upstairs is the community section hosting culinary arts and entrepreneurship programs, both working with the city and state workforce; a daycare; Pre-K; and a state-of-the-art media center. The revamped building is part of the $288M Downtown Far Rockaway Revitalization Project spearheaded by then NYC councilman, now Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. Amongst those in attendance at the ribbon-cutting were local pols, Richards, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson, Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers and representatives for Congressman Gregory Meeks and Senator James Sanders Jr.’s offices. We’re here to serve the least amongst us to make sure that they have an opportunity for upward mobility.” For CB 14 District Manager Jonathan Gaska, the revitalization of the church’s new building is representative of the broader vision for Far Rockaway’s rebuilding. “When I started 32 years ago, this building was a car dealership. Some may remember the old Mel’s Chevrolet. Downtown Far Rock was called ‘the village,’ and the rich folks from the Five Towns used to come here to shop, and now we’re going to bring that back. This building is a building block to bringing back downtown Far Rockaway to what it was. This is a true renaissance that I always hoped to happen, and Rev. Dr. Mullings being the visionary not just for the church, but Challenge Preparatory Charter School (CPCS) located a few blocks down, shows that he is a leader in faith, education and community,” Gaska said.

Dr. Mullings not only wears the hat of pastor of FRCC, he is also the founder and CEO of Challenge Preparatory Charter School, which currently serves almost 1,000 students in grades K-10 at four locations in Far Rockaway, plus the CTE and Early College high school, which opened in August 2020. Also, last year under Mullings’s stewardship, Challenge partnered with CUNY’s School of Labor & Urban Studies to provide free college-level certifications and degree prerequisites. For longtime parishioners and local residents of the communi-

ty, Beverly Williams and Maureen Osborne, Mullings’ determination to make FRCC’s new facilities a reality is a crowning moment. “This feels wonderful. We are so proud. When you think of where we came from and where we are going, to see this come to fruition is the Lord’s vision. God is good. He has taken us a long way. Pastor Mullings has been vigilant, and we are so proud of him. He is a true beacon in the Far Rockaway community,” they shared. Co-pastor Derice Stanley, who has been a member of FRCC since in the days when members first met in the pastor’s living room, said, “With this new building, I look forward to meeting and bringing more people in the community to Christ. Monkeypox Recently, the WHO and CDC began considering issuing an emergency declaration concerning monkeypox. This infection, unheard of by most, seemingly came out of nowhere overnight. Just as they did with COVID, news anchors are breathlessly reporting on the number of new cases. They seem to be trying to scare the hell out of everyone, even as they try to hang on to COVID as if it was still a real threat – it isn’t. To paraphrase WR Hearst, sensationalism sells newspapers. Risk of death from COVID is now about the same as it is for the common cold. Both

are a risk mostly to those who are chronically ill and severely compromised. Monkeypox (MP) is still a rare infection that circulates in some animals in forested areas of Central and West Africa. Cases in humans have been reported in multiple countries. MP is closely related to smallpox, which was declared eliminated from the world in 1980. MP is transmitted by close contact with an infected animal or human. Human-to-human spread usually requires skin-to-skin contact with a person who has MP sores, rash, or scabs. It is also spread

through respiratory droplets or oral fluids during intimate sexual contact (kissing; oral, anal, and vaginal sex). It can also be spread by contact with objects and fabrics contaminated by the MP virus (clothing, bedding, and towels). Symptoms of MP include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes (neck, armpits, or groin), back and muscle aches, and fatigue. Not all MP patients suffer from these flu-like symptoms. Typically, about one to three days after the fever, a rash develops, usually first on the face, then the rest of the body including the mouth, vagina, and anus. The rash starts as flat red spots which become fluid filled, firm, raised bumps which eventually scab over and heal. Human MP cases are rare. This year the WHO has reported cases in at least 23 countries that do not have endemic MP. For reasons that are yet unknown, almost all cases occur in men who have sex with men. Presently, MP appears to be of minimal to no risk to the general, non-homosexual, population.

The Rockaway Times Most importantly, death from MP is extremely rare. The CDC recommends that anyone who has MP symptoms AND has either 1. Travelled during the month preceding the illness to countries in Africa or elsewhere that have reported MP cases or, 2. Had contact with a person with suspected or confirmed MP or 3. Is a man who regularly has sex with other men should seek medical care. There is no specific treatment at present for MP, however severe cases or cases in those who are immunosuppressed, pregnant, breastfeeding, or younger than 8 years may be placed on antiviral treatment. A vaccine is available and is being administered to the small segment of the population that is at risk. Since MP is not airborne, preventing infection merely involves avoiding close contact with at-risk or infected individuals. Choice and Non-Resistance If you have ever found yourself in a situation that suddenly seems wrong, you will know what I’m talking about here. It all comes back to being present, being aware, being open to checking “is this good in my life?” for big things, little things, life things and then creating a process to change a “no” answer to that question that may come up. All four: presence, awareness, inquiry, change. Seems so simple, yet we often don’t take the time to check in.

More and more I do this. I think it is how I arrived to a place of peace, love and joy. I haven’t had a manicure and a pedicure since early March 2020. It used to be something I “had” to do. I wouldn’t think about not getting them. I wouldn’t think about caring for my toe and finger nails myself. Then something happened. When our norm is no longer available, we can only adjust. I adjusted to doing it myself using as non-toxic materials as I

can get. If I had used the above “four” to ask myself about manicures/pedicures even once, I would have told myself how I don’t like all the toxicity and how much do I really like sitting there? (This is not to say, by the way, that I would never have a manicure/ pedicure again nor that I judge anyone now who does. This is my moment now.) I put into practice choosing change, rather than reacting in change when something happens. There is no choice then but to change. So better to analyze and change by choice. This whole practice led me to an exploration, understanding and adaptation of non-resistance. Sometimes we cannot get past limitations doing something the same way every time. We just repeat. I became aware of this working into a yoga pose and thinking about how to release a specific part of the lower back area for someone I have the pleasure of guiding in yoga practices. I adapted this method of non-resistance and it has changed everything. Breathing in to the exact second moment,

allowing the body to go just as far, then breathing to allowing the body to go deeper. This also applies to our minds and heart space. Rockaway Beach Volleyball Standings The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League is back in action this summer, but as quick as it came, the season will soon come to an end. The RBVL, which plays every Wednesday night up at Riis Park, is well underway and down to just two weeks left. John McCann recently shared the latest standings in the league as Week 9 came to a close last Wednesday. See the score tables for the standings.

Championship week begins next week. It all kicks off with an End of Season Party after the games at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10. Ready in 10 will be playing some tunes at the party at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. The RBVL Championship will take place that following Saturday, August 13. Summer Classic Playoffs Begin

The Summer Classic Playoffs are here! The first champions have been crowned by The Graybeards, but now all the action is back at St. Francis de Sales. Men's Open Quarterfinals are tonight, Thursday, August 4 and semifinals are next Thursday. Kennedy's took the regular season title in Division 1 while Coastal Real Estate topped Division 2. On Monday, Quarterfinals begin for Boys Grammar Middle and Boys High School. J & E Industries is the top seed in BGM followed by BHYC. Blue Bear Risk Management and R. Tyne Painting lead the pack in Boys High School. Boys Grammar Senior Quarterfinals are Tuesday after the regular season ended in a 3-way tie for first

between NYBS Mechanical, Delmar Pizzeria, and Seany Pizza. Quarterfinals for BGM also continue. Wednesday, August 10 is semifinals for all three divisions and the championships are Friday, August 12 with Boys Grammar Middle at 6:15 p.m., Boys Grammar Senior at 7:30 p.m., and Boys High School at 8:45 p.m. On the female side, Girls Grammar Senior continues regular season play and playoffs begin on Monday August 15. Girls High School quarterfinals are this Wednesday August 10 in the gym and continue the following week. Women's Open also completes regular season play and begin their playoffs on August 15.

What a Fun Run

The 19th edition of the Graybeards Family Run once again provided one of the highlights of summer in Rockaway, producing a fabulous night with over 400

runners participating. Spectators more than doubled race attendance, cheering the runners of all ages, and then convening in the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard at St. Francis de Sales, to celebrate with food and beverages, music from DJ Poppa D, games and children’s rides, raffles and awards. The children’s races kicked things off at 6:30 p.m. with waves of runners pouring down Rockaway Beach Blvd to receive their ribbons after completing their trek. Rockaway’s Special Athletes followed, drawing a tremendous response from the crowd. The 1 Mile set off at 7 p.m. and Richie Aiken defended his title in 5:55.

Jack O’Grady, Tommy Aiken, Timmy Nichtern, and David Graves completed the top 5 males. Wrestle Talk RIC FLAIR'S LAST MATCH RESULTS & 1CW PRO LIVE By Eric Jayden

So, this past weekend we had Ric Flair's last match ever and I have to say it got a lot of mixed reactions. Ric Flair and his partner Andrade El Idolo went on to defeat the team of Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. There were several big names from the pro wrestling world in attendance. We saw The Undertaker, Mick Foley, Michelle McCool and Diamond Dallas Page who came to support Ric during his last match. Now, going back to the mixed reactions from fans, with many saying that Ric looked awful in the ring and that his strikes and chops were not the usual strikes and chops Ric Flair delivers. Now let's stop right there. Ric Flair is 73 years old and for a man who has been in the wrestling business for over 50 years, if you expected to

too high. I have to say I enjoyed the match. At his age, I didn't expect too much from him, but he still performed better than most of the so-called wrestlers out there with contracts. I wish Ric Flair all the best, but I will say this, Ric, please, this has to be your last match. You put in enough time, it's time to finally hang those boots up. Now, the question of the week is a question that I get emailed on a weekly basis… "Where are you wrestling next?" Well, my next live appearance will be at my home 1CW Pro Wrestling on Saturday August 6, in Houston, Delaware. This will be one of 1CW Pro's huge events, as they will hold their Annual Hall of Fame Ceremony along with an action packed line up.
