It was a nail biter. The Rockaway Times Photo Contest came down to the wire with nine judges first having to choose a Top 3 out of a Top 10 of truly spectacular photos. With a crowd gathered at Caracas on the boardwalk on Friday, July 30 for the finals, judges’ votes were tallied and photos by Gina Brennan, Richard Santaga and Andrew Stangel were selected as the Top 3. Master of Ceremonies, Nicole Taylor-Lang, announced the finalists and then told the crowd judges would have another vote
to select the Grand Prize winner. All three photos received at least one vote for first place but after a final count, Nicole asked for a drumroll and announced the winner of the 2021 Rockaway Times Photo Contest: Gina Brennan! Gina’s winning photo was taken with an iPhone. Photography equipment and editing techniques used for contest winners and finalists have varied through the six years of the contest. So you don’t have to be a pro, you just have to have a good eye for a great shot! Gina’s photo of people enjoying a sunset at The Wharf captured a classic Rockaway scene: a beautiful sunset with people soaking in good vibes. With the win, Gina takes home The Grand Prize of $500, a cover feature and bragging rights for a whole year! Runners-up Richard Sanataga and Andrew Stangel received gift certificates to either Bungalow Bar or Whit’s End for their moon photos. All Top 10 finishers also received a t-shirt emblazoned with their photo on front. All those photographers who earned a Top 30 spot and had their photos put on display Continued on page 4

Community Calls on Governor to Support Water Safety By Isabella Guerriero
Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato is fighting to prevent drownings not only in Rockaway, but across the state. On Tuesday, August 3, on the boardwalk at Beach 17th Street, Pheffer Amato joined the Water Safety Coalition, elected officials, and other community leaders to call on Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign the Water Safety Commission bill, A.7734/S.7129, into law. The commission would focus on increasing access to water safety education in public schools and underserved communities. The conference started with introductions from Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato, who thanked all the advocates and community members who came to speak, as well as her co-sponsor, Buffalo Senator Tim Kennedy, who fully supports her in the senate for this bill. She spoke of the tragic drownings of children in the Rockaways and around New York state, all of which could have been prevented. She stated that
10 people die each day from unintentional drownings, with two out of 10 being children under the age of 14, and disproportionately members of low-income communities. The commission would focus on creating a roadmap of solutions for the state. First to speak, was Clare Hilger, a member of the Water Safety Coalition and secretary of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association. She recalled being at the beach last summer when two swimmers went missing, and despite first responders’ best efforts, one swimmer drowned. She said, “Before we have to go to helicopters land-
ing on beaches, we should try starting in the classroom.” The Water Safety Coalition, which includes the Rockaway Beach Civic Association, is working to make water safety education an essential right to all. The coalition is currently working to support upcoming bills S2207 and A2208, which aim to make water safety education mandatory in schools. Hilger acknowledged the need for a public pool in Rockaway but said water safety can be taught out of the water as well. There is no negative to this bill she said, which will empower children with knowledge to pre-

vent drownings. Next to speak was Shawn Shevlin of the Swim Strong Foundation, a nonprofit focused on reducing unintended drownings and water-based accidents. The foundation, which has been in Rockaway for 13 years, has taught more than 10,000 students, and has given one million dollars’ worth of free swim lessons to children in need. Shevlin talked about drowning being a global epidemic, with one person dying every 70 seconds due to drowning. “Our goal should not be to keep our children away from the water, but to educate them about the nature, challenge, behavior, and dangerous conditions of each different type of body of water, so they can make decisions that will keep them safe in, on, and around, that body of water,” she said. For more information on the foundation, go to swimstrongfoundation.org. Kate Krause, founder of Rising Tide Effect, a nonprofit organizaContinued on page 7

COMMUNITY CALLS Continued from Page 6 tion that seeks to bring positive change to underserved communities through the aquatic experience, spoke of the importance of the bills, which would work on fixing the disparity in underserved communities, since swimming instruction has long been something only affluent families can afford for their children. With 53 public pools in NYC, and an additional 50 pools in public schools, resources are available to be used for free instruction for all New Yorkers. Along with Krause was Tamia Davis, one of Rising Tide Effect’s first students. She began her swim journey just a month ago and is now able to swim independently. “In order to have fun in the water, we must know safety or at least the basics to prevent us from drowning,” she said. Lisa George, who works for Senator James Sanders and is a part of the Heart of Rockaway Civic Association, shared a story of two Rockaway residents, who taught both her and her son how to swim right in Far Rockaway.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 5, 2021
They also taught her that the Far Rockaway end of the beach is extremely dangerous, due to the riptide and rip currents, but since it appears so calm, it can put many people at risk. She also spoke about people who come down to Rockaway for the day, who are put at risk because they were not taught water safety. George urged the Governor to sign this bill. Edwin Williams, Heart of Rockaway Civic president, said that many kids face mental fears of the water since they do not know how to swim. He says two high schools in Rockaway have inoperable pools that should be used to teach people of all ages how to swim. Next to speak was Cynthia Hicks
from the Laru Beya Collective, a nonprofit surfing organization based in Rockaway. She was hired as a teacher for Citywide Aquatics as part of the free learn to swim program, which was forced to end due to Far Rockaway High School having to be shut down for mandatory renovations. Hicks also recalled a time where she had to save a distressed swimmer who had been living in Rockaway all their life, but had no knowledge of basic swimming knowledge. The Laru Beya Collective works closely with Patagonia, which has four murals across the city that feature a water safety coalition call to action. For more information on the Laru Beya Collective’s
free learn to swim programs, go to larubeyacollective.com State Senator Joe Addabbo showed his support for the bill by speaking about the work the commission has to do including evaluating the efficiency of current programs, developing other programs and making sure they’re accessible, and educating everyone about water safety. Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson spoke on behalf of District 31. The bill focuses on access to programs such as Laru Beya and Swim Strong, and Anderson made that clear. He thanked the advocates and leaders for supporting these bills. Dolores Orr, chair of Community Board 14, expressed her disappointment in past leaders who did not follow through on commitments to teaching water safety. She urged the Governor to sign the bill and got the crowd excited about it too. Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato closed out the conference and urged the Governor once again to sign the bill into law and thanked all who came out to support this cause.

***** Congratulations to Gina Brennan who snapped the winning photo in this year’s Rockaway Times Photo Contest. Her picture of people enjoying a sunset at The Wharf was spectacular and captured a nice slice of Rockaway life. The top runners-up were photos by Richard Santaga and Andrew Stangel and the voting by nine judges was tight! There was clear consensus that this year’s contest was the best yet with all Top 30 photos worthy of winning. And we have to say, the boardwalk looks naked without the beautiful photos! We’re really proud to run such a great event each year. And we do it with the help of willing sponsors: Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC), NYC-Ferry, and NYC Parks. (A reminder to those who
had their photo enlarged and placed on the boardwalk or ferry dock: you can pick up the photo at the Parks Department office at the Beach 86th Street concession. Please pick it up by Sunday, August 8). ***** And congratulations to all who came out for The Rockaway Times Sandcastle contest. Katie McFadden revived this fun day on the sand a few years back when she realized nobody was doing an official one. Long gone West End Realty used to run a contest but once they closed, the original contest faded away–until Katie got it going again. ***** One of our favorite people around town implored us to tell drivers to pay attention to Stop signs and actually stop. The problem is we don’t know if those people know how to read so we’re printing this hoping someone tells them that red sign at the corner means stop. He also said Beach 108th Street with construction (and construction cones) is an ob-
stacle course for both pedestrians and vehicle drivers. We feel his pain. We have our fingers crossed that the work on Beach Channel, west of Beach 116th Street, is actually completed. DOT and Department of Design and Construction say the $20 million upgrade is done. ***** A yacht anchored in the middle of Jamaica Bay off Beach 132nd Street for a few days last week. We got a number of inquiries about it. Our marine reporters were off last week so we couldn’t send a vessel out to ask. ***** As you know by now, Mayor de Blasio said that New York City will require proof of vaccination for people going to restaurants and gyms and other indoor venues in September. Breezy Point, according to City Data, is among the highest vaccinated zip codes in the city with 84% of people being at least partially vaccinated. Far Rockaway, zip code 11691, is not faring nearly as well. Just 39% of people in that zip have
been at least partially vaccinated. ***** Sometimes you can’t help the timing. On Tuesday, Assemblywoman Stacey Amato was calling for the Governor to sign a bill into law creating a commission to improve water safety programs to reduce drownings. He was likely distracted by a statement from New York State Attorney Tish James: "The investigation has concluded that Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women, and in doing so has violated federal and state law." So, as laudable as the bill is, he might not be the one signing it. ***** Rockaway: Surfing Headlong Into A New Life by Diane Cardwell (reviewed in last year’s Rockaway Times Summer Guide) is being made into a Netflix movie. Kerry Washington will produce and star. Some of you know Kerry from the series Scandal and other performances. Some of you know Diane from living in Rockaway! Congrats to Diane!

RISE Summer 2021 Shore Corps Program The Shore Corps students are working toward presenting their work at RISE’s End of Summer Celebration, which will take place Friday, Aug. 13 at the RISE building and is open to parents, guardians, and donors to attend. The next cohort of the Shore Corps program will meet during the academic year, starting in the beginning of September, and will run until next spring. Students in 9th-12th grade who live in or attend school in and around the Rockaway peninsula are eligible and encouraged to apply.
By Cosette Davis, Summer Youth Engagement Coordinator
Monday, July 5, marked the beginning of the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity’s (RISE) Summer Shore Corps Program, which provides experience for high school students to work on projects with professionals in fields of environmental science, civic engagement, healthy food systems, and community planning. Students also participate in active outdoor recreation in small groups to better appreciate the natural resources of the Rockaway peninsula. Due to COVID-19, Shore Corps has been hybrid with virtual and optional in-person programming. This summer, the Shore Corps students have been rotating through three different projects covering the topics of urban planning, photography, and docent interpretation. They have been working in teams with the instruction and support of mentors from
various universities, including the Pratt Institute, The New School, the State University of New York, and LaGuardia Community College. Meanwhile, on their in-person days, students have been able to get lessons in fishing with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, surfing with the New York Surf School and Skudin Surf, as well as go kayaking
in Jamaica Bay, and biking along the Boardwalk. Students also lead community cleanup events on certain weekends to beautify the coastline.

Raccoon Times: Rockaway’s Nightlife TIKI BY THE SEA BRINGS IN THE JAZZ AND FUNK MELODIES By Nicole Taylor-Lang
When the word tiki comes to mind, most people are dreaming about an island oasis and delicious cocktails in little wooden carved Tiki glasses. Well now Rockaway has its own Tiki oasis, Rockaway Tiki Bar, also known as Tiki by the Sea ( 6720 Rockaway Beach Blvd). If you were there this past Saturday, July 31, you got to experience some fun live music, DJs and always a bonus, delicious Polynesian inspired drinks and food. This was my first time going to Tiki. I was looking forward to checking out the music and the overall aesthetic of the place. I got there and the band was set up outside. Musician D.Treut was on drums with Gene Perla on bass and Jamie "Breezy" Branch on trumpet/FX. They were playing some jazzy tunes or as D.Treut likes to call it “American spirit music.” The music was drawing in passersby. Once the band took a quick break, I went inside to check out the bar. I love the tropical vibes. I ordered myself a Mai Tai and yes, it was delicious! When the band was starting up again, I grabbed my drink and went outside. The weather was perfect, which made the night even more enjoyable. The band’s instrumentals were great. They had a blast playing there. “It’s awesome playing here outside; having a bunch of people walk by and bringing in the beach crowd and just playing some feel good music,” Dave Treut, D.Treut. said. When the band was wrapping up their set, a bunch of people got up to compliment them. Rockaway brings so many different types of music and musicians, it's nice to see people appreciate that. “I was blown away by the band, they were incredible, said Jayd McCarty from Manhattan. “Rockaway is completely new to me, and I like it a lot here, I wish I experienced it sooner.”
Up next was DJ Conor, who is originally from Dublin, Ireland, but now resides in Brooklyn. What’s really interesting about him is that he doesn't use the modern DJ sets with MacBooks and digital scratch boards; he only uses the classic vinyl records and a record player. I thought that was really cool to see. He was set up next to the bar and started flipping through his records to start playing some tunes. “Vinyl just sounds a lot better and digging for records in record shops is the most pleasurable pastime,” DJ Conor, Conor Creaney, said. “I played here a couple weeks ago, and the community has such village vibes; everyone is super friendly and open minded here.” Creaney plays a variety of soul, disco, funk, and reggae music. He is also part of a supergroup called The Lock-In, which consists of him and two other bandmates David Kitt and Tim Wheeler. They released a record of the same name, which consisted of two extended hypnotic melodies; “Locked In and Locked Out.” The song “Locked In” was in the soundtrack for “Normal People,” which is an Irish television drama that you can watch on Hulu. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the different songs. The music from both the band and DJ just seemed to fit the ambiance of the bar and restaurant. “This was the first time we had live music on the patio and the music was a perfect fit,” co-owner Joe Herron said. “We were just saying how we are going to get the band here on a regular basis.” They will also be booking DJ Conor again and hoping to have him as well on a regular basis. Herron and Creaney are longtime friends. Creaney has been DJing over the years at Herron’s different establishments and always enjoys doing so. The next time Rockaway Tiki

Ships, Cars, Starfish & More At the 5th Annual RT Sandcastle Contest
The contest drew a big crowd of participants.
The 5th Annual Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest was a success! From ships to cars to turtles and more, Beach 117th Street was covered in creative pieces made out of sand on Sunday, August 1. After last year’s event was

canceled due to the pandemic, The Rockaway Times picked up the fun again this year and hosted the annual contest on Sunday. A rainy forecast kept some people home, but the rain held off and by the end of the contest, 32 groups came out to participate, filling every workspace in the contest area. With 18 entries, the 9 & Under age category was the most competitive. Silvia and Lucy Sigal and Karisha K.’s Lucy the Sea Turtle earned them first place. Sarah, Maya and Sufyan Rasheed’s Taj Mahal earned second place. They decided to make the Taj Mahal, as their whole family is originally from India. Mia, Ella and Susan London and Kirin Steven’s Heart Castle earned them third place. There were also two honorable mentions. Pierre and Pial Leung’s Village in Memory came in fourth. In the 10-17 category, there were eight entries. Jayden and Justin McLernon’s Rockaway Car Boat earned them first place. Kelly Werther and Billy Jang’s Jose’s Pyramid earned them second place. They have a friend from Egypt whose grandmother, Jose, would tell them stories about Egypt and the pyramids. Jose
passed away about a week before the contest, so they created a pyramid in tribute to her. Nello, Lily Belle and Eoan Giuliani’s “Utopia” earned them third place. They built an eco-friendly village. Carina Karasawa’s “Carina’s Castle” and Lune Moors’ Dungeon earned them honorable mentions. Lido Beach Butlers Brings a New Way to Beach By Katie McFadden
Lido Beach Butlers is “changing the way you beach.” Inspired by the word “Lido,” the name of an island off of northern Italy, meaning “a fashionable beach resort,” Lido Beach Butlers is aiming to provide that fashionable beach experience without the hassle of having to lug your own beach gear down for the day. Instead, they bring the experience to you, offering rentals for everything from chairs to umbrellas to coolers packed with ice. Originally launching in Riis Park in 2019, Lido Beach Butlers is starting to expand and recently launched their second location at Beach 108th Street.
In 2017, when a friend with three kids brought up his frustrations of having to carry everything down to the beach for a day at the Jersey Shore, he suggested an app system where butlers carry the stuff from their car down to the beach. A light bulb went off for Maria and Brooke Thomas. The Brooklyn-based couple spent 2017 and 2018 developing an app just for that, but rather than having butlers bringing your beach gear from your car, they took it one step farther, by allowing users to make a reservation and have whatever equipment they need, waiting at the beach for them. Working late-night hours with an app developer based in India, the couple had the perfect app ready to go by 2019. They launched the Lido Beach Butlers app and business at Riis Park’s Bay 2 that summer. “In the summer of ’19, we finally got it up and ready and we opened, and we killed it. People loved it. We had almost 3,000 downloads in a month and a half,” Brooke Thomas said. “It was a really cool experience. The day we launched in Riis, we saw the parking lot was packed and we got butterflies,
but we did it and it worked fine. People are loving this,” Maria Brooke said. It’s been such a hit, that Lido Beach Butlers has started to expand. About two weeks ago, working under new Rockaway concession contract owners, Rockaway Bazaar, they opened up shop on Beach 108th. Lido Beach Butlers stores its equipment in a shipping container on the street side of the boardwalk, and has a tent set up on the beach to serve customers. How does it work? The best way is to download the Lido Beach Butlers app, which has everything you need to know. You choose a location, either Riis Park or Beach 108th Street, and either make a reservation for a specific date and time if planning ahead or request on demand service. Then you choose the items you want. And this isn’t your average beach equipment. They have high-quality chaise loungers ($20), beach chairs ($10) and even comfy bean bag chairs ($20) to sit on, or a “lux combo” of two loungers, a table and an umbrella for $70; a seven-foot large sunshade ($30) or umbrella ($20) for shade; plus all your other beach needs such as an ice-packed cooler ($10), beach games from paddle rackets to footballs to spike ball ($4.50$10), kids beach toys ($6) and side tables ($7). Select what you want, and the butlers will have it all set up and waiting for you at your location for when you arrive. When nearby, open up the app, and a map guides you right to your setup location on the beach. Once you’re relaxed, you can also use the app to order food and refreshments. There are no hourly rentals, but rather customers can use the equipment for the day. When you’re ready to go, you select “I’m leaving” and the butlers will come to pick up your rentals after you leave. On Saturday, July 31, this Rockaway Times reporter had the pleasure of testing out Lido Beach Butlers' Lux Combo. As a local with my own beach gear, this isn’t a service I would expect to use, but giving it a try changed my outlook. The loungers are extremely comfortable, the umbrel-
la offered full coverage and the table was convenient for holding my water bottle and other belongings. Plus, I can’t say enough how nice it was to not have to lug all of that equipment to and from the beach and set it all up. It’s all there waiting for you. It was also nice change of scenery to experience a different beach than my own. And I’m not the only local who approves. According to the owners, despite being conveniently located up the block from the ferry landing and The Rockaway Hotel, which brings a constant flow of visitors, some of their best customers are those who live nearby. “The locals love it. We get a lot of locals saying how nice it looks and we have some people who have houses up the block that are using it,” Maria Thomas said. They also work with people who know the beach well. “All of our workers are local. Every employee we have is from the neighborhood except one,” Brooke Thomas said. The owners say having that local insight has been a big help as the butlers can answer questions or make recommendations to their
customers, and locals know just what to look for when a storm might be rolling through, and they need to store equipment quickly. With Lido Beach Butlers appearing to be an early success, Brooke and Maria Thomas are hoping to take it farther in the future. “We wanted to start the brand in New York and expand it throughout the country,” Maria Thomas said. “Ideally, we’ll expand as far as California,” Brooke Thomas said. They also hope to work with hotels near beach areas, that might not have their own beach equipment rentals. “We want to change the way people beach. This is not your regular beach rental company. This has never been done before. It’s a simple concept but people love it,” Maria Thomas said. “We get a lot of people tagging us online saying there’s no other way to beach. They even started their own term—people are now saying ‘Let’s Lido it.’” For more information, check out LidoApp.com, download the Lido Beach Butlers app in the Google Play or Apple store on your phone, and follow them on Instagram at Lido_beach_butlers

PADDLING INTO THE SUNSET WITH ROCKAWAY’S SURF SKATE FITNESS By Marina Cregan
“The most effective exercise is having fun!” says Surf Skate Fitness’s Sole Proprietor, John ‘Hank’ Lewis. Located in Bay Breeze Park on Beach 88th and Beach Channel Drive, Surf Skate Fitness / Jamaica Bay Paddle Sports offers an opportunity to commune with nature, reflect, meditate, challenge yourself, and at the same time, get a fun workout. Whether you prefer a nice paddle to see the city skyline, or a relaxing paddle yoga,
Surf Skate Fitness / Jamaica Bay Paddle Sports is the outdoor experience that will have you appreciating Rockaway in a whole new light. Lewis is a Certified Professional Stand Up Paddle Association Instructor with over 20 years of experience in stand up paddling (SUP), as well as a Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard possessing his AED/CPR/First Aid certifications. After retiring from the DOE about five years ago, Lewis decided it was important for him to give back to the Rockaway community. In order to keep its mission of giving back to the community, Surf Skate Fitness / Jamaica Bay Paddle Sports also donates a percentage of all activity fees to an organization with a record of fighting racism and promoting multi-racial unity. Surf Skate Fitness / Jamaica Bay Paddle Sports offers a varie-
ty of activities open to the public. Open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., participants can partake in intro level SUP courses, distance fitness training, SUP coaching, SUP yoga experiences, and paddle skateboarding instruction. Because of such long hours, participants have the luxury to decide whether they’d like to enjoy a sunrise paddle or catch golden hour while paddling at sunset. I chose to go the sunset route for my first time ever paddle boarding, and it was the best decision I ever made. There was a light wind, so I was able to glide right through the water. Along the way, we passed by our friends at Bungalow Bar and Thai Rock, giving it that extra local Rockaway feel. It didn’t take long to get comfortable on the board, and the paddling almost came naturally. We went out into the bay around 6:45 p.m. and were able to catch the entire sunset out on the water. Growing up in Rockaway and having seen many of the famous Rockaway sunsets, this was by far the best. Watching the sunset reflect onto the water just completed the entire paddling experience perfectly. Paddle boards are available for clients to rent after they have had at least one SUP course with Lewis. Then, paddle boards are available to rent for $50 for two hours. As a water safety advocate, Lewis requires all participants to wear life jackets when in the water. In addition to rentals, every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Lewis collaborates with yoga instructor, Leah Matthews, for a SUP yoga experience. Appointments for rentals and the yoga experience are encouraged, and can be made by contacting Lewis at (917) 502-9764, or via email, standupandpaddle@surfskatefitness.com. Lewis also has a storage unit and van stocked with paddle boards and skateboards for sale. And
besides offering fun, both in and outside the water, Lewis provides participants with clean-up kits in order to keep the shoreline clean and offers eco-advice to each of his clients. Surf Skate Fitness / Jamaica Bay Paddle Sports revolves around the idea that theory informs practice, and practice informs theory. I must admit, it was my first time paddle boarding and I was a bit nervous that I’d fall repeatedly. However, Lewis said that it was all about your mindset on focusing on having fun, and that is exactly what I did. Once you forget about the idea of “working out,” and just focus on having fun on the board, the paddling almost becomes natural. By the end of my first SUP lesson with Lewis, I had so much fun paddling through the water, it was almost as if I completely forgot this is technically a workout. I’ll be back with friends! In addition to how much fun I had paddling, I appreciate Lewis' continuous efforts to give back to the Rockaway community. Lewis utilizes Surf Skate Fitness / Jamaica Bay Paddle Sports as an opportunity to teach his clients about how important it is to keep our peninsula clean. Lewis works with United By Blue and Leave No Trace, providing every client with eco-friendly kits that include two large garbage bags and a pair of gloves. Lewis encourages his clients to clean up the shoreline and pick up any trash that may be laying around. He even practices what he preaches! When we were out in the water for my SUP lesson, Lewis stopped paddling at the
sight of two plastic bags floating in the bay. I firmly believe that once one sees another do the right thing by our environment, it will only encourage others to do their part. “In order to appreciate the real beauty this peninsula has to offer, we must do our part in keeping it clean,” Lewis said. In other efforts to give back to the community, Lewis also offers free SUP opportunities for NYC Park’s “City of Water Day,” and a free day of Paddle Skating for children with autism. When Lewis began Surf Skate Fitness / Jamaica Bay Paddle Sports, he believed that it was most important to not only teach people how to paddle board and paddle skate, but he wanted to ensure that all his clients would enjoy themselves and have a good time throughout their outdoor workout. And I am proud to say that this was one of the best experiences I’ve had on this peninsula. You can appreciate Rockaway for all it’s worth right on the water. It’s just like Lewis said, “If you’re having fun, you will succeed on the board and you will get a great workout in at the same time!”

FAMILY FUN RUN MORE FUN THAN EVER By Keith Goldberg
After a one-year hiatus due to COVID, the 18th edition of the Graybeards Family Run once again provided one of the highlights of summer in Rockaway, producing a fabulous night with nearly 500 runners participating in at least one race. Spectators more than doubled race attendance, cheering the runners of all ages, and then convening in the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard at St. Francis de Sales, to celebrate with food and beverages, music from DJ Poppa D, games and children’s rides, raffles and awards. The children’s races kicked things off at 6:30 p.m. with waves of runners pouring down Rockaway Beach Blvd. to receive their ribbons after completing their trek. Rockaway’s Special Athletes followed, drawing a tremendous response from the crowd. The 1-Mile set off at 7 p.m. and Richie Aiken took the title in 5:49 followed closely by Riley Bishop. Bryan McKinnon-Doyle, Michael Gallagher, and Anthony Gennaro completed the top five males. Olivia Teich was the female champion in 6:32, followed by MaryAnn Polanco, Cassie McDade, and Charley Mae Heeran. This year’s 5k race actually turned out to be 3.5 miles and again featured segments along the oardwalk, Rockaway Beach Blvd., and Neponsit Avenue. Patrick Goldberg regained the championship, winning in 19:06 on the lengthened course. Dan Mazzuchin and Michael Tuffey were next behind Gold-

LOCATION , LOCATION, LOCATION “Location, Location, Location“ are often the three most used words in discussions about purchasing real estate. Here are some thoughts for making your location decision: Spend some time hanging around your area of interest in order to become familiar with it – unless you already know it well. When I bought my house many years ago, I was nervous and undecided until I spoke with a friendly neighbor who was passing by pushing a baby carriage. He assuaged all my concerns – and he was right! Do you need to be within walking distance of a bus stop, subway stop, religious institution, school,
shopping? OR perhaps you don’t want to be too close to any of the aforementioned? {due to auto traffic, foot traffic, etc.) Want water views? Ocean views? Bay Views? In Rockaway, the homes on beach blocks generally cost more. Houses with bay views can be a relative “bargain” due to the longer walk to the beach, etc. I’ve had good success in selling such houses, and I currently have buyers interested in bay views. Of course, I’ve had a lot of success selling beach block houses, as well. Currently, I also have active buyers looking for beach block houses and all types of Rockaway properties Call me. Love, Robin

NYC Biometric Identifier Information Law: Local Businesses Affected ByB yGille G i l lAnn e A nRabbin, n R a b bEsq., i n , ECIPP/US, s q . , C I PCIPP/E P/US
Last month, NYC’s new biometric data protection law became effective. The law applies to many local commercial establishments including stores, entertainment venues, and restaurants. The law requires the posting of a sign giving notice of biometric data collection and prohibits transacting in biometric data. Covered establishments are required to post notices if they collect, retain or share “biometric identifier information” — “physiological or biological characteristic[s] … used by or on behalf of a commercial establishment … to identify, or assist in identifying, an individual.” Examples include a retina or iris scan, a fingerprint or voiceprint, a scan of hand or face geometry “or any other identifying characteristic.” A sign providing notice of biometric data collection should
be clear and conspicuous, written in plain language, and be posted near all customer entrances. The establishment can still collect biometric data, and there is no requirement that it obtain written consumer consent. Generally, businesses collecting biometric data through photography or video recording are not covered unless they store, analyze or share this info. In addition, the new law prohibits covered establishments from transacting in biometric data (selling, sharing) in exchange for anything of value or otherwise profiting from such transaction. The law does not apply to governmental entities and financial institutions are not subject to the notice requirement. Damages and fines for noncompliance can be high; a commercial establishment that
To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com
fails to post the required sign can be fined $500 per violation, another $500 for transacting in biometric data, and $5000 for an “intentional or reckless” violation. The law contains a private right of action, which means an individual can sue the establishment for violations. For failure to post notice there is a “cure” period during which a business must be given a chance to correct the violation. The notice requirement does not apply to data of employees who are acting in their employment contexts, but the law’s prohibition on commercial establishments using data for transactional purposes does apply to employees’ biometric data. This would include use of employee biometric data by third-party data processing services on behalf of the employer, such as for time records.
Given the potential for steep fines and litigation, commercial establishments subject to NYC’s new biometric law should take steps to avoid violations. Businesses should also ensure that they are in compliance with other applicable data protection law, such as the SHIELD Act (which imposes date security requirements on businesses). The NYS legislature is considering a state-wide biometric privacy law, which contains more burdensome requirements than NYC’s law and also has a private right of action for noncompliance. Now is the time for businesses of all sizes to take stock of their data practices and data protection obligations. The information contained in this column is provided for informational purposes only and should not be construed as legal advice.

Set Your Life in the Right Spot August in Rockaway. A time of slowing down. A time of rest. A time of contemplation. A time of planning. I have a short message this week and then will share some wisdom from some who inspire me to think differently, accept that all is ever-changing and to make changes. I have this small orchid plant since 2014. t has been in a spot behind and under the leaves of two Christmas cacti. I watered

it week to week, the leaves were kind of close to the pot and it had remained like that all of the time it was in that place. Surviving. It occurred to me recently to move it to its own place with more direct morning sun. I moved this little orchid plant from one place to another place and the leaves are reaching out and up and it is growing. Prior to this move, it got what it needed to stay alive; but it didn’t get
what it needed to thrive. I took this as a lesson for myself. We have survival instincts, we can put up with a lot. Are we just surviving? Or flourishing? If we set our lives in the right spot, we will flourish. Whatever that means for each of us. And it is not static. Every once in a while, we may have to shift because everything is ever changing, nothing stays the same. Every once in a while, if we ask ourselves, “am I thriving?”, we will know if we have to place our lives in more direct sunlight. “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” - Maya Angelou “There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.” - Dalai Lama “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive
GEHLHAUS ROCKS
- to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. - Marcus Aurelius “Every morning, when we wake up, we have twenty-four brand new hours to live. What a precious gift! We have the capacity to live in a way that these twenty-four hours will bring peace, joy, and happiness to ourselves and others.” - Thich Nhat Hanh “Accept - then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it. Make it your friend and ally; not your enemy. This will miraculously transform your whole life.” Eckhart Tolle “Thanks to our human body, we can feel, we can heal, and we can transform. We can experience life in all its wonders... Thanks to our body, everything is possible.” - Thich Nhat Hanh May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

ROCKAWAY POLS AGREE: CUOMO’S GOTTA GO State Senator James Sanders Jr. was the first local politician to call for Governor Andrew Cuomo to resign following the release of the report issued by NY State Attorney General Tish James on Tuesday, August 3. The report found Cuomo had sexually harassed multiple women. “I am calling on Governor Cuomo to resign following the extensive independent investigation conducted by Attorney General Leticia James and her team of top independent prosecutors that has produced solid evidence that the Governor engaged in sexual misconduct involving members of his staff and others in violation of federal and state law. It is clear that Governor Cuomo cannot do the work of New York State. In the meantime, we cannot waste time. We need a strong, focused leader at the helm, and right now Governor Cuomo is not that leader.” State Senator Joe Addabbo’s staff issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "While the Senator strongly opposes any act of sex-
ual harassment and nonconsensual touching, he is currently reviewing the 165-page Attorney General report and evaluating the ongoing investigation by the Assembly, before making an official statement on the Governor." On Wednesday morning, Addabbo said: “Based on my review of the findings in the Attorney General’s 165 page investigative report, I believe that Governor Cuomo should resign in the best interest of all New Yorkers.” On the Assembly side, Khaleel Anderson and Stacey Pheffer Amato also issued statements saying Cuomo should resign or

face impeachment. Anderson said, “He has sexually harassed multiple women and violated state and federal law. Governor Cuomo must resign or the Assembly must move to impeach immediately. Amato issued a statement on Wednesday: “Earlier this year, I joined my colleagues to call for an independent investigation by the Attorney General’s office. The Attorney General delivered a fact based and thorough report which in my opinion are grounds for impeachment. The report concluded that multiple state and federal laws were violated, and that the Governor’s actions and culture in his Executive Chamber are toxic and are the products of a pattern of behavior. “I believe the women who bravely told their truths of sexual harassment and experiences in a hostile work environment – the magnitude of the findings are much larger than I could have imagined. Unfortunately, workplace and sexual harassment is systemic, and we must do better
and do more to protect folks no matter where they work, or who they work for - emphasizing nobody is above the law. Governor Cuomo must step down, and if he is not prepared to do so on his own, I urge the Assembly Judiciary Committee to expeditiously complete their impeachment investigation.” Although they are not part of state government, City Councilman Eric Ulrich and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards also called on Cuomo to resign. Governor Cuomo released a video in which he denied most of the allegations in the State Attorney General’s report. Cuomo took office after David Patterson became embroiled in scandal and dropped out of the race in 2010. Patterson had taken over for Eliot Spitzer who resigned in the wake of a prostitution scandal. If he were to step down or be impeached, Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul would step in and serve until his term is over in 2022.

About That Cough A cough is the forceful release of air from the lungs against closed vocal cords, which results in its characteristic sound. When something irritates the throat or airways, nerves in the area stimulate the brain to have the chest muscles forcefully contract to push out the irritant. Occasional coughing is normal and healthy, however a cough can be quite forceful and vigorous and prolonged coughing can be exhausting and can cause sleeplessness, dizziness, fainting, headaches, urinary incontinence, vomiting, and even broken ribs. A cough can also spread viral or bacterial infec-
tions to other people. An acute cough is defined as lasting less than three weeks and is one of the most frequent symptoms encountered in primary care medicine. The most common cause of an acute cough is the common cold. Other causes include viral illnesses like influenza and the coronavirus, pneumonia, inhaling an irritant like dust, chemicals, or a foreign body, pertussis (whooping cough), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in kids. An acute cough may also be caused by the worsening of an underlying illness such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary dis-
ease (COPD), or heart failure. A subacute cough, defined as lasting three to eight weeks, is usually the result of a recent respiratory infection. If a cough does not improve in four to six weeks, then additional medical evaluation is warranted. A chronic cough is defined as lasting more than 8 weeks and requires a thorough medical evaluation including imaging studies (X Rays at least). The clinician may advise a patient taking an ACE inhibitor (i.e., lisinopril) to switch to a different blood pressure medication as a dry, chronic cough is a common side effect of ACE inhibitors. Smokers may be advised to quit. The most common causes of chronic cough in nonsmokers who are not taking an ACE inhibitor are asthma, acid reflux, and a postnasal drip. Allergies can be another cause of a chronic cough. Medical evaluation of an acute cough is recommended when the cough is accompanied by thick, green-yellow, phlegm, wheezing, fever, shortness of breath, fainting, ankle swelling, or unexplained weight loss.
The Rockaway Times Over the counter (OTC) cough remedies are recommended for acute coughs only. It is important to follow the dosing recommendations found on the package. Remember that they are intended to treat the symptoms of coughs and colds, not the underlying disease. Most studies show that OTC cough and cold remedies do no better than placebos anyway. An acute cough may be helped by home remedies that include sucking on hard candies (not for children under 6 because of the risk of choking), honey, moisturizing the air, drinking extra fluids, and avoiding smoking or inhaling secondhand smoke. Patients with an unexplained chronic cough that fails to improve even after completing medical examination and treatment should be referred to a cough specialist, usually a pulmonologist. For more information go to: www.thoracic.org/patients/ patient-resources/resources/ cough.pdf Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Rugby Returns to Rockaway By Alan Shaw
After a long hiatus due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, rugby is returning to the Rockaway Peninsula this fall as the Fishheads prepare for their first fall season since 2019. While over in Tokyo, the USA Men’s team finished a respectable sixth out of twelve last Wednesday, and the USA women swept their pool with a defeat of the defending gold medalist Austral-
ia before being knocked out in the quarterfinals, Rockaway’s own ruggers will look to pick up where they left off nearly two years ago - when they earned a 6-0 record during the regular season, followed by a successful playoff run culminating in a Empire GU Conference Championship Title. Although the Spring of 2020 would have seen the club head north to New Hampshire to face New England’s champions, Covid-19 had other plans. While Rockaway was able to play three “friendly” matches in the spring of 2021, including a victory over Queens RFC in the second annual Queens’ Cup, this Fall will mark the first official league play since the start of the pandemic. And with their 2019 success resulting in a promotion to Division II of their conference, the club will be looking to prove their mettle as they face a formidable array of opponents from around New York City and Long Island. All recent college rugby graduates are needed to get to the next level!
As always, the Fishheads are welcoming new recruits to the club. Whether you’re new to the sport or looking to get back onto the pitch after time away, Rockaway RFC’s doors are open. Training on the boardwalk at Beach 126th will begin on August 16 at 7 p.m. All current members, new recruits, and supporters are also welcome to attend a Social at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on Friday, August 20 at 7 p.m. to Schmitt (Iona College) and Michael Shrele (Loyola University - Maryland). We hope their rugby way of life continues! Wrestle Talk THE SURPRISES CONTINUE! By Eric Jayden
Last week, we reported that former WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan has signed a deal to work for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and we also reported that former WWE Superstar CM Punk was in contract negotiations with the promotion as well. Now, it's been reported that CM Punk has signed with AEW to work for the promotion with rumors of his debut possibly taking place at the scheduled AEW Show on August 20 in Chicago, Illinois. And if that wasn't enough… Now, current reports are saying that former WWE Champion and UFC Fighter Brock Lesnar is in talks with All Elite Wrestling also. Now, if this is true and Brock Lesnar is signed to AEW, the amount of star power on their roster would be insane! Brock Lesnar was last seen on
Wrestlemania 36 where he lost the WWE Championship to Drew McIntyre. If Brock Lesnar is signed, in my view, it would most definitely catapult AEW over the WWE in ratings and live attendance numbers. You could possibly see matches like Chris Jericho vs Brock Lesnar or CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar the possibilities are endless. But, at this time we must all sit down and wait and see what further develops. In other wrestling news it has been reported by the WWE that it has parted ways with "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt and this one shocked me. Bray Wyatt has been absolutely entertaining since adopting his character and I have to say for the life of me I don't understand why the

WWE would have released him. He is one of their top draws and merchandise sellers. To me, this all points to signs that the WWE is setting itself up to be sold so they are reducing their payroll and staff.
