Celebrated nationally on the first Tuesday of August every year since 1984, National Night Out Against Crime has become an event that brings the community together with the law enforcement members tasked with protecting it. Rockaway has been celebrating since the late ‘80s, this year being no exception with an event sponsored by the 100th Precinct Community Council at the Beach 94th Street parking lot, as well as on Beach

17th Street with the 101st Precinct. The 100th Precinct event featured bouncy houses, face painting, and popcorn for the kids, along with tables set up from Rockaway institutions such as Princess Cruises to the Rockaway Beach Civic Association to the local Boy Scout Troop. The event was organized by the precinct along with its liaison to the public, the 100th Precinct Community Council. “It shows everyone the police have a softer side, it's not us

against them, it’s us together,” said Kathy Heavey, the newly-elected president of the community council and a 25-year veteran of the NYPD. “It all helps with the police-community relationship,” she said. The event was well-attended by the community the 100th Precinct patrols, which spans from the tip of the peninsula to Beach 59th street, along with Broad Channel. It was also attended by officers from the 100th including Community

some of his youth in the Rockaways. “We come here to serve [the community], they are our eyes and ears,” he said. Among the many locals who attended the event was Omar Newell, whose daughter, Leah, saw the festivities and asked to take part, and when The Rockaway Times spoke to them, she was already in full face paint and halfway through a bag of popcorn. “It’s a nice thing for the community, getting everyone together,” said Newell, clutching goodies from the various tables. The 100th Precinct’s National Night out also featured martial arts demonstrations from some of the local

schools, as well as dancers from the Millennium Development after-school program. Local officials were also in attendance including State Senator Joe Addabbo and Councilman Eric Ulrich, who had a few National Night Out events to visit that night. “We need to bridge the gap between the community and the police, and events like this help out a lot,” said Ulrich, addressing the crowd. On Beach 17th Street, spirits were also high as the community got to enjoy bounce houses, a barbecue, a basketball giveaway, Zumba, community resources and much more with

the 101st Precinct and its community council. The event was attended by community members, officers, Councilman Do-

novan Richards and more. Despite the good turnout, National Night Out has changed over the years. Many Rockaway residents remember the joint National Night Out festivities sponsored by both the 100th and 101st precincts, which included much of what this year’s events featured, along with a fireworks display. However, most can agree that fireworks or not, National Night Out will continue to be a positive event that brings the community together and further develops its relationship with local law enforcement.

Leaders Call for Change After Fifth Drowning Death By Katie McFadden

On Sunday, August 4, Maintain Joshua Odozi waded into the waters of Jamaica Bay at Beach 88th Street’s Bay Breeze Park to cool down on a hot summer day with friends. He didn’t get to go home that night. Disaster struck when after 5 p.m., the local boy who just turned 15 this summer was dragged out into deeper waters as the tide went out. Members of the Community Boathouse, who utilize this kayak launch area for paddle trips, were nearby when the incident occurred. “I think he went far out because of the high tide. There’s a big drop there. You go from standing in five feet of water to eight or nine feet,” Bill Gehlhaus, one of the witnesses said. Odozi began to panic and started waving his arms and scream for help as friends tried to save him. Boathouse member, John Pender, jumped into the water and

tried to rescue the boy. He was able to grab on to him, but as the boy continued to struggle and pull Pender under, Pender couldn’t hold on. The boy’s hand slipped away. Other Boathouse members and neighbors called 911 and joined in the search for the boy before first-responders arrived, but Odozi was nowhere to be seen. Rescue efforts continued into the night until the rescue became a search mission. Odozi was presumed dead. After spending the morning searching the waters of Jamaica Bay, on Monday afternoon, search crews recovered Odozi’s body, as devastated family and friends got confirmation of the news they didn’t want to hear. Odozi is the fifth person to die by drowning off of Rockaway’s waters this summer. This latest tragedy comes just a week after 18-yearold John Munoz drowned in the ocean on Beach 59th

Street. About a month after, a couple, Keylon Ramsay and Umarie Chamble, died after drowning in the waters off Beach 9th Street. And seven weeks after, a 25-year-old woman drowned in Riis Park. All drownings occurred when lifeguards weren’t present. The beach drownings occurred after lifeguards left for the day at 6 p.m. Odozi drowned in an area that never has lifeguards, in a location where No Swimming signs are posted. Now the community is calling for change. On Friday, August 9 at 5 p.m. on the Beach 73rd boardwalk, members of The Heart of Rockaway are holding a press conference to call for more to be done, such as increased signage, a swim safety awareness campaign and longer lifeguard hours. In the meantime, elected officials are already calling for more to be done. After Odozi’s drowning, State Sen. James Sand-

ers announced that he’ll be meeting with government officials to discuss options such as increased signage, a water safety educational campaign, and more access to public pools and swimming lessons. “I am deeply and profoundly saddened by the drowning deaths that have occurred in Far Rockaway over the last month, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” Sanders said. “I want to make sure that no other family has to experience such heartbreaking loss.” Councilman Donovan Richards is also calling for more to be done, including extended lifeguard hours and more pools around the city. On Twitter, he posted, “We can do better as a city. Swim education, access, and extended beach hours can make a difference. Let’s set a goal of building at least 100 public pools by 2030. We have to start somewhere!”

Local Late Night Crime Spree By Kami-Leigh Agard

No, those weren’t rats or raccoons that made those holes. They were humans, up to no good. In the wee hours of the morning on Friday, August 2, thieves broke into four Rockaway Commons’ store fronts,

located at Beach 86th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Businesses affected include RBNY Physical Therapy, Super Laundromat, Beauty Supply Shop, and an empty storefront that formerly was a dentist office. But that wasn't the only crime event to take place that early morning. On Beach 116th Street, a man reported to the police that he was approached by a man with a box cutter. Regarding the burglaries, according to Jason Tenyk, co-owner of RBNY Physical Therapy, the thieves broke in through the back door of the empty storefront with shovels. Tenyk said, “They destroyed our beautiful mural on the wall created by local artist, Geoff Rawling (Rawling has offered to redo the mural.) In terms of money, all they took

was $40 from our cash box, but the damages done to our office will cost us upward of a few thousand dollars. As we are a medical office, we don’t have any camera footage due to HIPAA laws, but the police are investigating the thieves’ fingerprints and DNA samples. Let’s see if these felons are found.” In addition to the $40 from

RBNY Physical Therapy, a $4000 DVR was removed from the laundromat; $800 was removed from the Beauty Supply shop, and as for the empty former dentist office, no items were removed. According to the NYPD press office, Paul James, a 31-year-old male from Brooklyn was eventually arrested and charged for the burglary and possession of burglar tools. As for the attempted assault on Beach 116th Street, NYPD press states that at 2:25 a.m. on the Friday morning in front of 222 Beach 116th Street, a building that houses Last Stop Gourmet Shop, a 45-year-old male reported to the police that an unidentified man approached him and displayed a box cutter. The victim was not injured, but the following individual was arrested and charged for the assault: Johnny Torres, 60 years old from Manhattan. He was charged for menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment.

A local, attorney Keith Sullivan, had been eyeing a run as a Republican, especially if Cabán was on the ballot, but has decided against such a run with Katz as the nominee. ***** There have been five drowning deaths this season and all occurred when lifeguards are off-duty. Councilman Richards is calling for lifeguards to stay on duty until 8 p.m. and wants swimming taught in schools. State Senator Sanders is calling for more signage about the dangers of swimming on unprotected beaches. ***** The Summer Classic had a classic. And it's on tape. Charlie Marquadt hit a game-winning buzzer beater from beyond half-court last week in playoff action. And as they say, the crowd went wild.

It came out strong during The Rockaway Times’ 4th Annual Rockaway Sandcastle Contest on Sunday, August 4. From dolphins to dinosaurs and messages to save our sea life to interactive sand games, there was no end to the creativity among participants that left judges and spectators saying, “wow!” Although the contestant pool wasn’t as big this year with the contest date being pushed back a week, there was no shortage of quality on Beach 117th Street. About 26 groups participated in this year’s contest. Each contestant had two hours to make whatever they wanted using sand and things found Alex Zablocki, Eric Peterson, Nicole Taylor Lang and Mike Dockett on the beach. Local To Debut ‘Opera On The Beach’ This Sunday! By Kami-Leigh Agard

Rockaway has evolved into quite a mecca for music, and local opera singer, AnnaClare Del Vecchio, is adding a new pitch to the scene this Sunday, August 11 with her first-ever opera concert titled, “Opera On The Beach,” at Rustwoods. So, how did the 22-year-old singer come up with the offthe-beaten-path idea of bringing opera to Rockaway? Del Vecchio says her mom, Maureen, was her inspiration. “My mom deserves a lot of credit for strongly encouraging me to create Opera On The Beach. A few months ago, I told her that Whitney Aycock, the owner of Whit’s End, came up to me one night asking when I was going to sing for him. I was kind of reluctant at first because I didn’t think anybody would want to hear opera. I guess when I told my

mom what Whit said, it stuck in her head, and she said, ‘Why don’t you get your opera friends to come down to Rockaway and do a concert? You can call the event, ‘Opera on the Beach.’ With just a month’s notice, I got a bunch of my opera friends together. I can’t be-

lieve this is all happening,” she said. Del Vecchio says she understands the uniqueness of opera and hopes others will learn to appreciate it as well. “I always wanted to do something like this, but I guess I just didn’t have the confidence. I know

the Rockaway Theatre Company does a lot of Broadway shows, and a few people asked me why I don’t start an opera company in Rockaway. Unfortunately, I think opera is so underrated. I don’t think a lot of people know how beautiful it is, and often misjudge it. In my opinion, opera is on the same level as musical theater. Obviously, there are differences, but the drama, the acting, the costumes are all the same,” Del Vecchio shared. Being born in Italy, which many consider to be the homeland of opera, Del Vecchio says opera was in her blood. “I think being born there had some influence on my passion for it. Plus my family is pretty musical. My mom used to own a jazz bar in St. Marks Place in the East Village in Manhattan and she is also a very big opera fan. As a child, I was more into theater and pop music. I used to be involved in the original Rockaway Theater Club that was held at the First Congregational Church on Beach 94th Street. That’s when my passion for performing for an audience really began,” she said. However, it was a voice teacher that helped Del Vecchio’s talent bloom. “My passion for opera began when I was in the seventh grade when I started taking voice lessons with Jennifer Pomeroy. She is the one who made me realize that I had the libretto to sing opera. I started singing Art Songs, which is like a beginner piece for young opera singers who are just starting out. Jennifer assigned me a piece and that’s when I realized that wow, I can

do opera. Then when it was time for high school, I knew I wanted to attend a school with a strong performance arts program, so I auditioned for LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, and thankfully I got in. And I guess that’s when my passion for opera truly reached a high pitch,” Del Vecchio said. As for many opera singers, Del Vecchio says the pitch of her voice has changed with age. For example, she started off a mezzo-soprano (a type of classical female singing

They usually don’t like to label younger singers because our voices are still developing. It has to do with the color of your voice and, this Sunday, attendees will get to see the differences in the voices from singers of

different ages. For example, with the male singers, some are dark tenors, and some are light tenors. The same goes for the female mezzo and sopranos singers. However, this isn’t a bad thing. Famous opera singer, Cecilia Bartoli, says “the voice is like fine aged wine. The more it ages, the better it becomes.” At Opera On The Beach, attendees will get to hear a range of Italian, German, French and English pieces. Some sets on the list of 17 include, “In Uomini, in Soldati from the opera, Cosi Fan Tutte and “Ruhe Sanft Mein Leben" from the German opera, “Zaide.” The group of ten singers, range from ages 19 to 25. Del Vecchio, who turns 23 next week, says being able to perform at Opera On The Beach will be true birthday gift. And this weekend, the 7th Annual NY Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Surf Film Festival will celebrate the world of womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surfing with a series of events and films. Head to the Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th from August 9 through 11 for this film festival presented by Lava Girl Surf and Clib Bar. Founded in 2012, Lava Girl Surf was the first of its kind womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surf workshop in New York. The success of Lava Girl Surf quickly led to the launch of the NY Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Surf Film Festival to further support and celebrate women in surfing, filmmaking and grassroots marine environmentalism. The festival showcases diverse styles of story-telling, from established and emerging directors, producers and filmmakers. This year, stories span the globe and feature films come from the United States, Canada, Jamaica, Indonesia, Spain, Mexico and Norway. For the seventh annual fes-

Jump Dance Crowned World Champs These girls are jumping for joy after being crowned world champions. On July 30, Jump Dance Company took part in the World Dance Championships, an international dance competition hosted in the Meadowlands Exposition Center in New Jersey, and they came out victorious. There were more than 175,000 entries across 300 cities throughout the dance season, and this was the culmination of the top dances from each of those cities. There were dance studios from all across the United States, and studios from other countries

around the world, in attendance. Jump Dance Studio was nominated to bring five routines to this competition. All five of them placed in the top 10 overall for each category. Jump was awarded first place for their “Disco Fever” production, and another first place for their small group, “Welcome Home.” Both of these dances were nominated out of hundreds of thousands of routines throughout the c o m p e t i t i o n ’s season.

These kids are absolutely amazing! Today is what dreams are made of for these beautiful dancers!” Jump has had a successful season overall, but this was by far the biggest win of the year. Dim Bulbs Dear Editor: I’m a retired city employee. Part of my duties was to report problems around the five boroughs. I often called in potholes, defective street lights, traffic signals, etc. I recently called 311 to report a street light that was out. In times past, it was very simple. Now they have some new computer model. Every location I offered, the computer rejected. I went back and forth for about 15 minutes. The operator told me to call Con Edison. I told her we don’t have Con Edison. Unreal. In desperation, I called Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office. At least with him, I know the problem will be taken care of. Counting Votes Dear Editor: The close primary election for the nomination for Queens District Attorney should encourage voters to find a system more likely to select a candidate with majority support. In November, we may be able to vote for a Charter amendment instituting ranked voting. With many candidates running, voters can choose a first choice, second choice or more. If the first choice is not selected, votes are transferred to the next choice. This system is used in the state of Maine and a number of cities. The Board of Elections is a partisan agency with the Commissioners and most of the poll workers chosen by the Democratic and Republican organizations. The oversight may work when each party watches the other. The system is sorely

No Weekends RSVPs Dear Editor: Weekend events off the peninsula during the summer? That’s a hard NO! Dreaded is the envelope with the embossed gold sticker. ‘“No”, and a gift is the standard response, unless family or close friend. Resentment quickly builds towards the selfish jerks who thought to include you in the celebration of their significant life events. The scarcity of weekends justifies the ensuing bitterness. Fear-Of-Missing-Out is an epidemic among would-be vacationers. They pore through local papers to weigh the desirability of upcoming events. Getaways are coordinated around festivals and concerts in order to fully partake in the benefits of being a local. The shortage of weekends and abundance of revelry is clearly an issue. Residents of the nether boroughs should be made aware of our plight and will perhaps become sympathetic. “Woke” individuals will avoid scheduling events between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and maybe provide “Safe Spaces” and “Comfort Animals” to denizens forced off the peninsula due to poor planning. Angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs) are one of four classes of drugs recommended for the initial treatment of hypertension—a condition found in over 45 percent of adult Americans— plus heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Early this year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a large-scale voluntary recall of certain lots of ARBs, namely valsartan, losartan, and irbesartan, due to the presence of small amounts of three carcinogens found in them. Then, a few months ago, the FDA issued a second recall for additional lots of the same medications. The FDA now estimates that U.S. patients have been ingesting these impurities for at least four years. The recalls have caused widespread confusion and alarm among patients, doctors, and pharmacists. Many patients, once they

were notified of the recall, just simply stopped taking them. Suddenly stopping these medications can be very dangerous, but people were understandably scared. To understand how this happened, one must understand the manufacturing and distribution process. It is estimated that as many as two million patients ingested the impurities, specifically N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), N-nitroso-N-diethylamine (NDEA), or N-nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA). They were found in medications manufactured in two factories, one in China and one in India. The impurities are genotoxic, meaning that they may be harmful to DNA and cause genetic mutations and cancers. It turns out that manufacturers, mostly located in China, Europe, Latin America, and India, produce mass quantities of medications. Smaller pharmaceutical firms then purchase the product in

bulk and press it into capsules and tablets. In addition, the pills are often sold to other pharmaceutic firms who repackage them. The production of medications has become global which makes the task of quality testing them for impurities, proper dosing amounts, etc., extremely complicated. Because of this, the FDA has established offices and testing facilities all over the globe. In the manufacture of ARBs, tetrazole groups must be synthesized. Tetrazoles are created from dimethylamine and sodium nitrite. Any small error in the manufacturing process has the potential to create the impurities that were found. When you consider the fact that over 61 million ARB prescriptions were written last year in this country alone, you begin to realize the huge, daunting task the FDA has in ensuring that the medications taken by Americans do not contain impurities, but do contain what the label says they do

and in the proper amounts. In 2015, for the first time the FDA conducted more foreign than domestic medication inspections. As the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and ingredients used in their synthesis spreads out around the globe, so must the FDA. As many countries, especially developing countries, have less regulation and control over drug manufacturing, it is less expensive to operate there than it is here in the USA, which is why the FDA must follow the manufacturers. In this case, although it took time, the FDA found the threat. Many experts predict more pharmaceutical recalls in the future. It is not in my nature to complain, so I do my best to make a life for myself. I go to the gym, yoga at Ocean Bliss, get manicures and pedicures, haircut and enjoy going out to eat. All this with the support of my loving husband who is a very good man and without him I would not be where I am today. I count my blessings for my faith in God and this wonderful man. “No more multi-tasking for me. I am better off doing one thing correctly rather than do a million things wrong. My brain does really well with routine. Visual reminders help but sometimes they get sabotaged by people trying to be helpful. If I can do it, let me do it. If I make a mess, so what! Let me try. Capital One Bank Suffers Colossal Hack By Gille Ann Rabbin, Esq., CIPP/US

On the heels of the recent announcement that Equifax has agreed to pay up to $700 million as part of a global settlement over its massive 2017 breach, Capital One announced that it was the victim of a cyber attack by a hacker who broke into a cloud server through a misconfigured firewall. As a result of Capital One’s breach, personal information of 106 million U.S. and Canadian consumers was compromised. Capital One discovered the breach in late July after the hacker posted details online. Information accessed includes names, addresses, dates of birth, credit card application info, bank account information and numbers, and Social Security and Canadian Social Insurance numbers. Capital One notified the FBI once it discovered the breach and is continuing to investigate. Its website states it will notify

breach victims through the mail (Canadians will be notified “directly”) and will offer free credit monitoring and identity protection. The site also states the vulnerability exploited by the hacker was identified and fixed. Capital One claims its analysis shows it’s unlikely the breached information was used for fraud or disseminated. Nonetheless, if you’re a victim, take steps to protect yourself. Don’t panic. Read the notice, which will tell you the protections offered, and strongly consider signing up for them. Be on the lookout for suspicious activity, like calls from scammers. Capital One is not calling breach victims to ask them for personal information; don’t give out info to a caller claiming to be from Capital One and requesting information. Also be wary of scam emails targeting breach victims. These could be sham “phishing” emails designed to get you to click on a link and transmit personal information to scammers.

Monitor credit card, bank, monthly bills, financial statements, credit reports and scores regularly. If you see signs of fraud, report this immediately to the affected organization by phone and certified mail. If you’re a breach victim, consider having Capital One close your existing bank accounts and open new ones; cancel your Capital One credit cards and ask that they be reissued. Use fresh passwords. Sign up for activity alerts and texts for the new accounts. Additionally, sign up for activity notifications for accounts and credit cards you have at other banks. Consider obtaining a “fraud alert” and “security freeze.” When the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian) place a fraud alert in your file, a business will need to verify your identity before it issues credit. The alert needs to be renewed annually. The placement of a security freeze in your credit file is intended to prevent new credit

accounts from being opened in your name; no credit account can be established unless you authorize it by lifting the freeze. Capital One has provided a hotline, 1-800-227-4825, to assist consumers and answer questions, and a website, www.capitalone.com/ facts2019/. (Type the address carefully to avoid making typos and falling victim to typosquatters who set up sham websites to capture your personal information.) Unfortunately, notwithstanding federal and state laws requiring data security, the financial services sector has experienced more breaches than any other industry. The multitude of interconnected systems processing millions of financial transactions makes it susceptible to cyber invasion. Bleaker still: financial services data breaches are on the rise. All financial services consumers, breach victims or not, should follow sound information practices.

Farewell, Charlie By Lou Pastina

I had the good fortune a few years ago to reconnect with some old friends from my Greenpoint neighborhood through a music studio in Greenpoint (Williamsburg if you are a hipster) that was built by one of the guys. That guy’s family owned a house built in the 1850s on Graham Avenue, that he was able to convert into a cool studio.

Several old friends would come by and before you knew it there was a full band ripping it up pretty good. What was better was the repartee between these friends of 40 or 50 years. Nothing was too sacred to make fun of; it was so refreshing and fun. I had lost track of some of these guys over the years, especially the drummer, whom I learned was a kidney transplant recipient. Along with the

new kidney came a bunch of prescriptions to help the kidney adapt. About two months ago he got another bad call. They found some cancer cells. But according to the doctors, there was a 95% cure rate with the chemo that was scheduled. So, no one was that concerned. Apparently, the kidney didn’t get the email though and within two months we lost Charlie. I found myself taking the train to the old neighborhood to go to the funeral. The stops were familiar and the walk down Graham Avenue was too, although the new homes going up in cleared lots was a sign that those 1850s homes were on their way out. I forgot that it was August 5, the feast day celebrated by the local Italians from the village of Sansa, who believed that the Virgin Mother made it snow on a mountainside back in the old country. Our Lady of the Snows brings forth a marching band, floats, and a procession down the avenue. Charlie, you picked the right day.

The Rockaway Times As I got to Frost Street, I made a right to Humboldt and then a left on Humboldt and walked past Frost Restaurant, a must if you live in the neighborhood. A little further up, I came to a building that once was St. Catherine’s Maternity Hospital. I was born there, as were my brother and sister, and I suspect Charlie too. I made a right to North Henry Street and came to St. Cecilia’s School. I went there, as did my siblings, and Charlie did too. The building is now condos and so is the schoolyard where we spent our youth playing basketball, whiffle ball, learned how to play guitar, and tried to look cool in front of the girls. We were successful in the first three, but not the fourth. North Henry Street was lined with the Building Unit vans of the FDNY. The whole block was closed. You see, Charlie was a plumber for the FDNY, and they had showed up in numbers. As I walked Continued on page 29

down the block, I wondered to myself how many times I had made that walk as a kid. I got to the church early and slipped inside. No air conditioning in this huge cathedral-like church, only fans. But there was a cool breeze through the church, and I sat in the dark thinking that this was the place I was baptized, received communion, received confirmation, graduated and went to Mass. It was the place my parents got married and my mom’s funeral was. And all this was probably true for Charlie too. I was nudged by a uniformed fireman as a bagpiper began to drone outside and I knew it was time to go out and begin the ritual. The entire block was lined with the FDNY plumbers. It was quite a sight to see. The church was packed like it only can be these days: for a funeral. And I looked around and found familiar faces back once again

in the old neighborhood. I sat with the fellow musicians who played at Charlie’s studio, feeling a certain kinship with these fellows. If you didn’t know, St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music. Legend has it that her tormentors cut her head off, but she continued to sing. And once again, a fellow St. Cecilia musician has left us way too early. But what a send-off, you will be missed my friend. Farewell Charlie, never stop rocking.

700 Kids Get Ready for School With St. John’s On Friday, August 2, more than 700 children packed Brookhaven Avenue in Far Rockaway and the parking lots of St. John’s Episcopal Hospital (SJEH) to attend the hospital’s third annual Back to School Fair. At the event, more than 100 children received free dental screenings; over 30 adults received blood pressure screenings; and more than 30 adolescent annual physicals were scheduled. The hospital also distributed backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and other school supplies to ensure that children are prepared for the upcoming school year. “By providing health screenings

and school supplies, we are helping to enhance the health and wellbeing of the families we serve in our surrounding communities,” said Jerry Walsh, Chief Executive Officer. “Studies indicate that there is a linkage between education and good health, and we want to set our community members on the path of leading a healthy lifestyle from a young age.” In addition to the health screenings and school supplies, children were treated to face painting, basketball, video games, and a rock wall climb provided by the NYPD’s 101st Precinct. Of the more than 40 vendors who participated in the event were members of the FDNY who educated families on fire safety; the Queens Public Library; the health insurers Healthfirst and Wellcare; DentaQuest and HealthPlex who provided the dental screenings; and the New York State Department of Health.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Little Star—How She Twinkles So Bright! I grew up as an only child. I guess you could say I was a bit of a loner, preferring to stay inside reading a book in my grandmother’s sewing room as her machine whirled away. So when my daughter, Soanirina (aka "Soa"), was born, it was my first intimate experience with a baby, and I did not know what to expect in terms of milestones. She crawled at six months and walked when she was 13 months. Of course her first word was “daddy.” As a toddler, she had some language and would even pronounce words like me, such as “Wah-ter.” However, when her paternal grandmother advised that I get Soanirina tested for autism, I was aghast. Autism? What in the sam hill is that? I did not know what autism was, and my Soa—why? Ok, so what if she walks on her toes? I thought my little girl was practicing to be a ballerina. And as for her delay in speech, my family was of the school of thought that every child is different, and it will come soon. However, thanks be to God that I heeded her grandmother’s advice, and I called NYC’s Early Intervention program, had my daughter evaluated, and at 18 months she was diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD), a subtype of autism. Today my daughter is 10— strong as an ox, smart as a whip…but does not speak. I recently was in a nail salon and the woman in the chair

alongside me was getting a pedicure with her daughter, who was about my Soa's age. I longingly stared at them, wishing I could share the same experience with my daughter, who is a bit of a runner and does not like us to even cut her toenails. My Soa is very sensitive when it comes to her nails, even washing her hair is a job, and just in the past year, she’s finally tolerating water falling on her head. I used to have to get in the shower with her to make her comfortable with washing her hair. She’s made a lot of progress over the years in terms of sensory behavior. I mean there was a time, we had to hide all our greeting cards, because she had this penchant for rolling them into these perfect cylinders. She’s moved on from that, but still sometimes I wistfully wish for a time that we could share a Mommy and Daughter time doing things like going to a nail salon. That being said, I wouldn’t exchange her for all the riches in the world. Raising a child with autism is challenging, but there are so many rewards. That’s why the title of this column is “My Little Star— How She Twinkles So Bright. Amidst the tough days, every day, I thank God for blessing me with my little star. Her autism does not dim her beauty nor value, not just for me, but the universe. Everyone who encounters her is awed by her quiet beauty and sensibilities. Sometimes, I think she has

more common sense than me. She understands everything you say to her, but maybe she just has the wisdom to keep her thoughts to herself. Summer Ode To Mom This past Tuesday, August 6, was my mother’s 31st anniversary in heaven. For some reason, this does not make me as unhappy as it used to or as unhappy as Mother’s Day sometimes makes me feel. I feel a certain nostalgia, maybe because the summer holds such special memories for me regarding my mother. Many things in our society have changed, but the one constant is that Rockaway kids have the life. When we were kids, my mother barely used the car. We rode our bikes EVERYWHERE. While today’s kids have SFDS Summer Classics, we had the St. Camillus blacktop softball league, which was run by Bob Summerfield with help from Mrs. Magee, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Loof (Rockaway’s now best dressed man). We rode our bikes, either with my mom or with friends. I guess one thing that has changed is I do not remember locking up the bikes at St. Camillus and today my bike would be gone in a flash. Another thing we did that most children do is we went to the beach EVERY day. Sometimes we were down for the long haul and sometimes when Mom was busy she took us down for just a swim. Of course, that swim would last at least an hour. I clearly remember telling my brother, “Here she comes, do not look towards the shore and make believe we do not hear her.” On the days we went for the long haul, everyone had a job: mom made us sandwiches, I

made a jug of either iced tea or “red drink mix.” We never had Hi-C or Hawaiian Punch. We had the generic white label with the black wording. We also packed some snacks, which were also of the generic nature. No Oreos for us, we had chocolate cookies with vanilla cream or vanilla cookies with cream. Sometimes the cookies were a mixture! My brother usually carried the towels and boogie boards down to the beach and complained the entire way. What also happened every day is my mother watched us in the water. We were taught to be mindful of the tide and she constantly yelled at us to either move over closer to her or to move in as we liked to push the envelope. She also was known to yell at a few lifeguards when she did not think they were keeping as close an eye on us as they should. As I got to be a teen and went to the beach by myself, I still walked over to say hello and check in with her. I always could see her standing in the shore watching my siblings or if there was a break in the swimming and my brother was playing whiffle ball or running bases, she would be relaxing and reading. So, as I am of course sad she is not here to see her five beautiful grandchildren, I am lucky enough to have had fifteen wonderful summers making memories with her. And I hope I instilled the same fondness for the ocean, the beach and Rockaway in my children.

AmpSurf is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization made up of amputees, veterans, surfers, water persons, friends and families of the disabled. The group’s mission is to Promote, Inspire, Educate and Rehabilitate people with disabilities, especially our veteran heroes, Special-Needs Athletes and the disabled through adaptive surfing and the healing power of the ocean.
