CB14 Goes Back to Work By Katie McFadden

After a summer hiatus, Community Board 14 (CB14) got right back into the swing of things with their monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 10. With informational presentations, an executive board election, budget and parks issues and plenty of residents armed with various concerns, it was a busy night at the Knights of Columbus. To start the meeting, Chair Dolores Orr provided some updates on the controversy regarding National Grid refusing to provide new gas hookups until a new gas pipeline is approved. The Public Service Commission is now investigating National Grid’s claims that they won’t have enough gas to provide new connections if the pipeline doesn’t get installed. During public speaking, Kim Fraczek and JK Canepa of Sane Energy expanded upon this issue, explaining more about why National Grid’s claim is likely bogus. On October 10, at 7 p.m. at Bun-

galow Bar, there will be a community meeting to discuss this issue and alternative ways to cool and heat homes with renewables. In his briefing, District Manager Jon Gaska announced that the foundation for the new Far Rockaway Library is almost complete, and he warned people that need to drive near the downtown Far Rockaway area, to consider giving themselves extra time to leave as construction due to the redevelopment, is causing delays. He also made mention of the city’s new decision that it is now the city’s responsibility to repair sidewalks damaged by tree roots, rather than the property owner. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato was on site to provide information on 9/11-related bills that she sponsored that recently passed legislation. This includes creating a 9/11 Remembrance Day and mandating that schools across the state hold a moment of silence each September 11. She also announced that she is working hard on trying to solve some

of the issues on Beach 116th Street and is open to suggestions from the community. Chief of Staff Manny Silva spoke on behalf of Councilman Donovan Richards and announced that the Participatory Budgeting process will begin soon, giving residents a say in how tax dollars should be spent in the community. He encouraged those in District 31 to get involved in the process and contact Richards’ office. Regarding the infrastructure upgrades for the downtown Far Rockaway redevelopment, there will be a groundbreaking on Mott and Central Avenues at 11 a.m. on September 18. He reiterated Gaska’s point that the project will cause some disruptions as construction goes on, but it is being sped up and will take three years rather than seven. He also said that Richards’ office is working hard to urge the Department of Transportation to work faster on installing speed control devices planned for Beach 61st Street. In regards to Hurricane Dorian and

the Bahamas, Richards’ office is collecting new supply items that will be donated to those who need it. During public speaking, District Leader Lew Simon discussed the uptick in car break-ins and urged people to lock their car doors. Several residents from the St. John’s Home have been involved in these incidents and officials are planning to meet with the St. John’s staff. Simon is also staying on top of complaints regarding the new bus lanes in Rockaway Beach, which are causing confusion and he’s in touch with the DOT. Eugene Falik also touched upon some DOT issues and suggested that DOT itself should comply with traffic laws. Roxbury resident Peter Geist brought up concerns about State Road leading to Breezy Point. He explained that the road is hazardous due to failure to maintain the plantings along the road, which are covering pedestrian and bike lanes, causing walkers and bikers Continued on page 10

The Shoe Fits

BOYLEING POINTS

It was like somebody having their own weapon turned on them. Famed local photographer, Peter Brady, ripped my iPhone away from me and turned the camera towards my ankles. I was caught, just steps from the shore, wearing sneakers and black socks. A nearby throng, led by George Johnson, crushed me with over the falls, gnarly invective. I was called a barney, a kook, a goofy foot, and shoobie. They were wiping me out with surf slang which was appropriate enough because I was at the Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic. I took exception to shoobie, which is what they call DFDs in South Jersey and parts of California. I tried saying black socks were better than white but

that just triggered another round in the washing machine. Then I said I was a working journalist and couldn’t work barefoot. “Fake news!” somebody shouted. Anyway, I really just wore that footwear to keep people from looking at my sun-blistered lip. It was, and still is, gross. You hope when your lip is part volcano that nobody will notice but that didn’t happen for me. The day before the Richie Allen Memorial, I was at the Clare Droesch Memorial 3 on 3 basketball tournament and somebody asked me if my leprosy-ridden lip was from stress or the sun? I was mortified and hopped on my bike to escape. Only to realize my lock was on, in the spokes. There were witnesses. Gail Allen was first to heap some abuse at me. But that was okay, I really just did that lock-in-the-spokes thing to keep people from looking

at my sun-blistered lip. Really, it’s not a canker. I swear. I took all the abuse at, where else, Rockaway charity-memorial events. Which was perfect. The memorials were Rockaway to the core and I was getting a Rockaway workover. Both events, one honoring basketball legend and friend to many, Clare Droesch, and the other honoring Richie Allen, lifeguard, firefighter, surfer, are the kind of events that Rockaway does so well. Clare and Richie both died way too young and both left hard-to-match legacies.

The Saturday and Sunday events offered kids the chance to compete, kids too young to remember Richie, and some, Clare. But in some ways, that’s what makes these things so great. They send a message to young people that they are following in the footsteps of those who made a difference, those who inspired, those who were selfless and quietly heroic. The memorials were well-attended, fun, and a perfect reflection of the best of Rockaway. There were laughs, probably some tears, some good spins down memory lane and friendly but pretty fierce competition. They were just great. We say it often, that it’s the people here. The people who make Rockaway special. And you know what? It is the people. God, I love Rockaway. Even when I’m wearing sneakers on the beach.

The roads in Rockaway are horrible. The new DOT signage (right turn only, bikes, and bus only designations, for instance) do a great job confusing drivers and making traffic worse. And then there’s the construction and ripping up streets. We got a suggestion from a reader that they should do this work between midnight and 5 a.m. We got a complaint from another reader decrying the fact that work is being done at night. There’s already a backlog of some 50,000 violations the City has to review. ***** We’re in the middle of Palindrome week. You know what a palindrome is, right? 18 Years Later, Rockaway Hasn’t Forgotten Story and Photos by Katie McFadden

Rockaway will never forget 9/11. On Wednesday, September 11, the community gathered at Tribute Park on Beach 116th for the annual ceremony to remember the locals who died in that tragedy, 18 years ago. Despite the park undergoing renovations, Tribute Park was cleared of construction equipment in time for the Wednesday morning ceremony. Community Board 14 Chair Dolores Orr remarked on the importance on continuing to

hold the ceremony at the park despite the renovations, and how the contactor and the NYC Parks Department made it possible for the park to be used for the day. She also announced that there would be Continued on page 9

The FDNY and NYPD marine unit stayed close by on Jamaica Bay and as the ceremony came to a close, they provided a water display that created a rainbow in front of the backdrop of the city skyline with the new Freedom Tower.

Continued from Page 3 to go into the driving lanes, creating a dangerous situation for all. Gordon Williams brought up concerns over the lack of upkeep with O’Donohue Park. He spoke about crumbling bleachers and picnic areas. Silva addressed this, saying they’re waiting on additional funding to provide updates to the park. A rep from Rockaway United spoke about his efforts to bring microgrids to the peninsula to provide power and encouraged others to get involved with this effort. A rep from the Queens Royal Priest Hood spoke about a 5k run/walk on October 5 for all. Anyone is encouraged to participate for whatever cause is important to them. The run/walk begins on Beach 90th at 11 a.m. and goes to Beach 17th Street. Reps from Far Rock Strong were on hand to let people know about their organization that encourages youth to get out of the house and engage in activities like basketball, book clubs, literacy programs and other programs both on and off the peninsula.

A big issue brought up was regarding the recent decision to close the beaches to surfers due to Hurricane Dorian. Clare Hilger, Jeremy Jones and Bridget Klapinski all provided points about this issue, calling it “embarrassing.” Hilger said that those who run the beach are “out of step” and that nobody understands the water better than surfers. Jones spoke about the bodysurfing contest being postponed until Sunday. Surfers from as far as California allegedly came to town for the event and were surprised to see that was how New York handles some of the best surf of the year. Klapinski said that she hopes that Parks will work better with residents and surfers when it comes to issues such as this, so that hasty decisions to close the beach aren’t repeated in the future. Following public speaking, Halleh Saleh of the NYC Department of City Planning was on hand to give an informational presentation on the upcoming Coastal Flood Resilient Text Amendment, which will concern coastal areas across the city. More on this process will be discussed

later as it will come back to the community board near the end of the year as part of the ULURP process. Some time was spent discussing CB14’s budget and certain amendments were made regarding capital and expense priorities. Each community board has an opportunity to let the City Charter know their community’s budget needs. However, with some items still on the list since at least the 1990s, it was joked that many of the items requested will likely never see the funding. The Parks Committee report included information on the Beach 108th esplanade near the ferry, and Bayswater Park. The Beach 108th project will include replacing the sea rail, creating a plaza area with trees and benches, additional bike racks, covered trash cans, new pavers and paintings and a new plaza area that would help with the queuing of ferry riders. The committee requested that some type of bathroom also be added to this area. The design for this project will be complete by Spring 2020, construction will begin by Spring 2021 and it is ex-

The Rockaway Times pected to be complete by 2022. Bayswater Park will soon see a more than $55 million upgrade. The park plan will increase resiliency and improve the current park amenities. The plan calls for additional entrances, relocating the comfort stations, creating formal parking spaces, formalizing trails, adding berms, creating paths were people can see marine life such as fish and crabs, increasing basketball and handball courts, adding a maintenance building, revamping the picnic areas, adding a playground with water features and fencing and much more. The design will be complete by Spring 2020, with construction beginning in the spring or fall of 2021 and the park will be completed in stages, either by fall 2022 or spring 2023. The community board held a vote for a vacancy on the executive board—to fill the position of secretary and treasurer. There were four candidates on the ballot, however due to a tie, the position has not yet been filled. Due to Yom Kippur, next month’s CB14 meeting will be held on October 15.

New BBQ Joint Batesy’s is Smoking and Open for Business! By Kami-Leigh Agard

Born-and-raised Rockaway resident, Chris Miles, is no newbie when it comes to running crowd-pleasing restaurants. From Rockaway Seafood to the popular uptown contemporary Mexican restaurant, Pico, Miles and his partner, Billy Keating, certainly know how to dish out what their customers want—good food and libations. Their new spot is no exception. Batesy’s Bar and BBQ is already becoming a bustling new business. While service is excellent at the new spot, Batesy’s certainly got some cold service from a contractor and National Grid, causing significant delays on its opening. However, despite the uphill challenges, that didn’t stop the food-loving duo of Miles and Keating, with master chef, Joel Oberlander, from finally opening their new barbecue joint, last Monday, September 2 at Arverne By The Sea. And judging from the crowds, Batesy’s is definitely the new sizzling barbecue bait in town! After a tasting, The Rockaway Times was immediately hooked. The jumbo chicken wings, served in either honey bourbon or spicy cayenne pepper are heavenly. The chicken literally slides off the bone. The mac and cheese, corn bread and sautéed greens will have you smacking your lips for days. If the sides weren’t enough, Batesy’s serves up a little more for the non-meat eaters, including salads and shrimp skewers. And for those craving real BBQ delicacies, the brisket and ribs are top notch. However, for Miles and his crew, we agree—the pulled pork sandwich, served on a bun with caramelized red onion jam and a side of creamy slaw, is king. Batesy’s menu boasts quite a lot, and of course, the drinks are flowing and will keep you thirsting for more. There’s a variety of beers on tap, wine and the cocktails, Pico is known for, but think more bourbon than tequila at Batesy’s. If you are a seasoned lover of a delicately mastered cocktail, a must-have is the Southerner. This drink

As for the ambiance, the interior is both modern, yet rustic, and even includes seating made out of reclaimed wood from the floors of the old Domino sugar factory. But remember, summer isn’t over. Out front, the restaurant has seating for 25 to 30 people, nicely shaded with umbrellas. Also, there are bike racks outside, where folks can cruise from downtown or uptown and conveniently park their bike outside. is a blessing. “After a long road, so far so good. We’re an honest business. We love it. And with Chef Joel Oberlander on board, it’s a beautiful thing. Our meats are slow cooked for 12 to 14 hours, so when our customers come in, the service is super quick. Batesy’s is a relaxed and fun environment, so the battles we faced are totally worth it. Plus being across the street from our friends, Cuisine By Claudette, makes it feels even more like we’re in community. I have lived in Rockaway all my life and look forward to serving both old and new customers who know the great service, food and drinks we dish out at Pico,” Miles said. As reported in The RT,

amongst the challenges Miles and Keating faced was an issue that arose with a contractor’s poor installment of the kitchen’s hood. Then in June, they became a victim of National Grid’s moratorium against hooking up new gas installations until the latest Williams natural gas pipeline gets approval, claiming without it, they don’t have sufficient supply for new connections. However, Miles and the team refused to give up. Instead of hoping for gas, they resorted to buying new equipment that runs on electric power instead of gas, spending thousands of dollars on new equipment. However, according to Miles, the extra expense is worth it. “People love our food. I can boast about the reviews thus far, but I rather people come in and experience Batesy’s. Again, I am from and live in this community, and opening something new in Arverne is truly something special. Rockaway has exploded with food establishments, and we’re just happy to be a part of the foodie fabric,” Miles said. Batesy’s is open Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday through Sunday, noon to 10 p.m. However, according to Miles, the barbecue joint will soon be open for both lunch and dinner seven days, noon to 10 p.m. Batesy’s is located at 6820F Rockaway Beach Blvd. For more info, and updates about opening hours, visit them on Instagram at Batesysbbq.

9/11 Remembrance Day Signed Into Law On Wednesday, September 11, public school students across New York took a moment to reflect and learn about a major event in American history that they weren’t alive for when it happened— September 11, 2001. Two days earlier, a bill sponsored by local elected officials and signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, was signed into law, mandating that New York public schools have a moment of silence as part of September 11th Remembrance Day. “9/11 was one of the single darkest periods in this state’s and this nation’s history, and we owe it to those we lost and to the countless heroes who ran toward danger that day and the days that followed to do everything we can to keep their memory alive,” Governor Cuomo said. “By establishing this annual day of remembrance and a brief moment of silence in public schools, we will help ensure we never forget — not just the pain of that moment

but of the courage, sacrifice and outpouring of love that defined our response.” The legislation, S.4166A/ A.1801B, establishes September 11th Remembrance Day. In honor of the day, there will be a brief moment of silence in public schools across the state at the beginning of the school day every September 11th to encourage dialogue and education in the classroom, and to ensure future generations have an understanding of the

September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and their place in history. The law went into effect immediately. The bill was sponsored by state Sen. J o s e p h Ad d a b b o, who was excited to see it pass into law. “This new law will mean that the significance of the tragic events of September 11th, whether it be the loss of loved ones or the largest rescue operation our nation ever witnessed, will be forever acknowledged by school students too young to have witnessed this life-changing day,” Addabbo said. “Since 2001, our country has been united through four simple words, ‘We will never forget’

and with the Governor signing this measure, we can ensure that all school children will continue to keep those words active in their hearts and minds.” Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato was also a big supporter of the bill and helped it pass in the Assembly. “Students graduating from high school as part of the Class of 2019 were just newborns during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and soon enough there will be no students in the national public school system born at the time of 9/11,” she said. “By mandating a brief moment of silent reflection every year, we may ensure that future generations will better understand this day and its significance in our history. Governor Cuomo understands the importance of educating our children about our state and country’s history. I applaud him for signing this bill into law and for his continued partnership.”

one of only a few NY City areas that still had electricity. As to the question of the areas known geopolitically as Queens, Brooklyn, and Rockaway being Long Island, I refer to the history books. I specify August 27 to 29, 1776. During our War For Independence, Colonial troops, primarily under the command of General George Washington, lost a battle to British troops and German mercenaries known as Hessians, primarily under the command of General Sir William Howe. In defiance to then military traditions, instead of surrendering, retreated to the City of New York, a.k.a Manhattan. The battle, the largest following the Declaration of Independence on July 4th of 1776, was called the Battle of Long Island, which was actually fought, primarily, in Brooklyn Heights. Richard C. The Guts of It All Good nutrition is essential to growth, healing, and vitality. For a variety of reasons, some people are not able to eat. In order to receive essential nutrients, such patients require supplying the nutrients using a means that does not involve chewing or swallowing. Adequate hydration must be provided, but most people can go without nutrition for at least seven days. However, depending on the situation, nutritional support may need to be started sooner than that. While in some patients the inability to eat may be temporary, in others it may be permanent. The preferred means of provid-

ing nutrition in these situations is via the gut, known as enteral nutrition. It is the natural way in which nutrients are absorbed and it allows the intestines to do their job. Plus, it is safer than intravenous, or parenteral nutrition, which delivers nutrients into the bloodstream. The preferred route for enteral nutrition is through the stomach. A very thin plastic tube, called a nasogastric tube, is inserted through the nose and pushed into the stomach, and liquid nutrients can be given continuously at a set rate, or provided intermittently. Occasionally, a longer tube must be used to deliver the nutrients into the second

section of the small intestine, or the jejunum. These tubes are intended for short-term use, up to two or three weeks. If enteral nutrition is expected to be necessary for longer than that, tubes may be placed through the abdominal wall into the stomach or jejunum. These are known as gastrostomy and jejunostomy tubes. They are placed either surgically, endoscopically, or by a radiologist and may be kept in place for years. If the gut is not functioning or cannot be used, perhaps due to surgery or trauma, parenteral nutrition must be used. If the need is expected to be short-term, peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN) may be used. This can be given using a standard IV line but can only be used for a few days to a week. If longer term use is necessary, total parenteral nutrition (TPN) can provide all the nutrients a person needs. The drawback, however, is that because TPN has a large amount of carbohydrates, it can damage small veins and so must be given via large veins. This can be given using a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), which is

inserted in the arm and threaded into a central vein near the heart. A central line, inserted through the chest wall into the subclavian vein near the shoulder, may also be used but only for a short term. For long term use, a PICC line is preferred although a tunneled catheter or port inserted through the chest may be used. Parenteral nutrition may have serious complications including bloodstream infections and mild to severe liver dysfunction. Plus, because parenteral nutrition delivers basic elements like electrolytes and amino acids, component ratios differ from patient to patient and often must be adjusted on a daily basis. Lastly, from a legal perspective, NY State prefers life, at least for those already born. If you have a living will or health care proxy and do not wish to be placed on nutritional support, you must state that in writing on these documents. Hello New Beginnings Following up to my colleague, business partner and friend, Helen’s heartfelt column last week, “Goodbye Summer,” I am taking this opportunity to welcome the new beginnings of the coming season and welcoming, rather than resisting that change. Summer has always been my favorite time of year and I would reluctantly and sadly move into September, but as I got older, I focused more on my inner landscape rather than my outward environment. This focus coming

munity to practice with us and the other trained teachers. We were welcomed by the Board and started our business partnership there. Ocean Bliss Yoga had a new home. Everything aligned for us to offer a safe, peaceful haven for all. It has been an amazing journey of growth, depth and learnings. Life brings big new beginnings, small ones and all in between. Each person showing up for the first time to a yoga class experiences that new beginning. And, as Helen expressed last week, “we are all students for life.” So, every single time on the mat is a start anew. Awareness of where we are right then and there at that moment in time from a physical, mental and emotional perspective is the first consideration on the mat, then honoring that place and going from there. There are so many beginnings over the course of time when you practice the poses, the breathing practices, the meditation and the rest. Different types of poses help the body

The Rockaway Times in so many ways. For example, back-bending poses on a physical level, promote spine health; on a mental level are stimulating; emotionally are exhilarating, helping to uplift a bad mood or feeling of depression. Deeper experiences happen in all realms: physical, mental and emotional. Further to Helen’s thoughts on breath practice, a crucial component of the yoga practice, linking the breath to the movement creates an inner rhythm and body/mind/heart harmony. This is my feeling during and after a yoga practice. It is very personal. It is unique. It brings us within and creates a feeling of ease. It can be life changing. It can help you to make a change you may have been thinking about because it is a coming home to you. “Yoga is the journey of the Self. Through the Self. To the Self.” - The Bhagavad Gita. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Holy Moly! Lost Cell Phone Found By Paula Antonio

Last week, we hosted a great friend of ours, Fr. Domingo, an IVE priest on loan from Lithuania, preaching the circuit of the Mission Appeal at the weekend Masses at various churches in and around New York. Since it was Father’s final church appeal assignment before returning to Lithuania, and the church was less than a half hour from our home, we convinced Father to stay over another night and that we would put him on “The Boat” to Manhattan, where he would connect to the subway back to the Bronx rectory that night and then off to JFK. Since Father knew his way to the ocean, he hopped on the bike and took off for his farewell swim in Rockaway. Unfortunately, somehow, Father lost his cell phone somewhere in his bike ride to our home. Panic set in for all of us! We drove up and down and around…no cell phone. It was after 6 p.m. and the phones were off for the night

at the police, first-aid and other offices at Riis Park. Then it was time to pray! And pray we did. We set St. Anthony’s statue (our family’s patron) with a candle on the kitchen counter. We knew we were running out of time in getting Father to “The Last Boat,” so off we went, barely making it to the ramp, fumbling to purchase the ticket in the dark of evening, saved by one of the boat attendants who quickly mastered the

purchase. Next morning, Labor Day, we were so heartbroken that I suggested to my husband, Ed, to post Father’s lost phone on the Nextdoor App and I continued to pray to St. Anthony… “Please St. Anthony look around …something is lost and must be found.” Denise Scandiffio, from Neponsit, saw the Nextdoor post and placed the notice on the Friends of Rockaway Facebook page.

With heavy hearts, we went about our day celebrating Labor Day and Ed’s birthday with family at our home and in early evening, Ed received a call from an Ann Walsh, saying she saw the Facebook post about the lost phone and said she found a phone at Beach 142nd Street just two blocks from our home during her morning exercise walk. We quickly retrieved the phone and identified it as being Father’s but then could not reach Father as the rectory phones were off for the night and there was only a recording to call back the next morning or “Press 7 if someone was dying and needed last rights.” My heart was beating so rapidly that I felt I would need LAST RIGHTS! We knew time was wasting and that Father would be heading from the Bronx to JFK midday Tuesday. Ed finally got a call back from Father’s sister, a nun, who was able to reach Father. Not having a phone, Father emailed Ed at 11 p.m., planning a mutual time to meet at JFK. Thank you, St. Anthony…and Ann and Denise!

A Place For Veterans

Long ago, the United States shifted from a manufacturing economy to a service economy. We sell products, but for the most part, we no longer make them. However, one thing we continually produce with regularity is veterans. Veterans organizations are almost as old as America itself. The first such groups sprung from the Revolutionary War, when local charities were established to help ex-soldiers with disabling wounds and injuries. But it wasn’t until after the Civil War that vets got organized nationally and started to wade into politics. Union troops formed a group called The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). Their philosophy was if the government wasn’t going to help them, they’d help each other. They fought to provide care and pensions to former troops. In 1899, when troops coming back from the Spanish American War were excluded from The Grand Army of the Republic, they formed the VFW. The American Legion came along twenty years later, opening its membership to anybody who served in uniform during times of armed conflict. Thousands of troops coming home from the trenches of World War I joined because many had a tough time re-adjusting financially to civilian life. That led to a mass mobilization and march on Washington. These guys set up encampment for several weeks and sort of sat in the shadow of the Capitol and protested daily. They

became known as the “Bonus Army,” and their persistence led to fears of a revolt against the federal government. To prevent similar discontent after World War II, the veteran organizations pursued one of the largest social welfare programs ever proposed: the G.I Bill of Rights. To historians, its passage marked the peak of the American Legion and VFW’s power. Both organizations in World War II saw the GI Bill as a great recruiting opportunity and an opportunity to make their organizations something intergenerational, something long-lasting. The divisive politics of the Vietnam War, along with a sharp drop in the size of the military, led to a decrease in the groups’ membership, a trend that continues to today as the organizations struggle to remain relevant to modern veterans. More than 2,000 Legion and VFW posts around the country have closed. Many more are on shaky financial ground, putting communities in danger of losing institutions that for decades sponsored parades, youth baseball games, and other civic events. That being said, one of the great things about our community here in Broad Channel is that unlike many large urban centers where residents are brought together by the materialistic desire of gain and an accompanying carelessness of their neighbors, our little hamlet in the middle of Jamaica Bay is blessed with a strong sense of community and caring for each other, steadfast in our belief that the impersonal hand of government can never replace

the helping hand of a neighbor. That sense of community extends to our veteran organizations as well. Case in point, pictured here are members of Broad Channel’s VFW Prince Wynn Post #16 who spent this past Sunday afternoon hosting a BBQ for disabled veterans residing at St. Albans Hospital. The day was filled with great food accompanied by live music. For the disabled vets who must call this hospital home, the day was

indeed a special one, filled with friendly faces, great conversation and, most importantly, a display of genuine concern for them by all of your neighbors pictured above who routinely take time to ensure that their neighbors, who opted to wear a uniform, leave their family and friends are never forgotten. This is one story where I find my weekly close to this column most appropriate—Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Dear Enchantress, I am so afraid of S.A.D. Rockaway comes alive and so do I, and I feel panic coming in to me that I will not leave the house and will get seasonal affective disorder, and end up gaining 20 pounds, getting depressed and feeling horrible. Every year I seem to make it through, but it's terrible, and then summer goes so fast. I know I'm complaining, and I know I could plan a vacation, and I might do that for a weekend or something, but how do I feel better about this? I don't want to be climbing up a mountain every time I feel panic coming on. Dear Sister S.A.D. I hear you, and I hear this a lot, from mostly women. While your fears are real, you are painting a very specific picture of what you DON'T want, and that can create just that! So, you're reaching out in perfect timing, because we have many sunny days coming up in front of us, before anyone becomes a shut-in. One of the most charming things in Rockaway is that most people dread winter and it's a smallish enough population here that you could take minimal effort into finding or creating your tribe and create accountability and interest in doing things together. Perhaps you can defend that you will get seasonal affective disorder no matter what I suggest, and what I first want to say to that is: have the disorder and create and engage with people anyway, and the magic in that is do not talk of your disorder. Don't focus on it. Have what you have and show up anyway. The first power tool in all the mentoring and coaching I do, is STFU. Show the F*** Up. And

that is the most challenging part, which is why it makes the most difference. Here are ideas: Ask people who have creative interests if they desire a monthly/ bi-monthly/weekly meet up. tournament. Droesch initiated the tournament while courageously fighting her battle with breast cancer, and this year's event was the second following her passing last year. Saturday proved once again that her legend will never be forgotten as more than 300 players on 83 teams turned out to compete in her name. The day began with a free clinic in the St. Francis gym given by Kristi Dini, Grace Leahy, and Patrick Connelly. The life and legacy of Droesch was then recalled before play began with the 3rd and 4th graders. Teams began with round-robin play, with all teams guaranteed a minimum of two games, before advancing to elimination play, leading to champions in 11 different divisions. These are: Boys 3rd GradeThe Ballers; Boys 4th-Crusty Crabs; Girls 3rd and 4th-Crusaders; Boys 5th and 6th-Spiders; Girls 5th and 6th-Pink

Flamingos and Chunky Monkeys (co-champs); Boys 7th and 8th-BMJ; Girls 7th and 8th-Big Bad Ballers; Boys HSMy Girl; Girls HS-Jelly Fam; Men's Open-Dayton; Women's Open-White Claws. DJ Matt Finley provided the musical soundtrack to the day along with P.A. announcements. Many Summer Classic referees volunteered their services, with some coaches and parents filling in on the whistles as well. Christ the King's girls basketball team, assisted

with the clinic, and served as scorekeepers, while the CTK cheerleaders added to the festive atmosphere. Many SFDS teenagers took over the scorekeeping duties after their own games. Thankfully, very few needed to use the services of the first aid tent. Whit's End provided pizza for all throughout the day as games went from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hundreds of spectators supported the event, cheering on the players and purchasing 3 on 3 By the Sea apparel. A celebratory party then followed at The Wharf where the Squid Trio provided the live music.

Shows in Spaces Gallery Now Open

First he brought "Topless" to Rockaway. Now, it’s "Shows in Spaces." Artist Brent Birnaum is back with another art exhibition. From 2014 to 2016, Birnaum ran a temporary art gallery called Topless. The gallery in an abandoned dentist’s office on Beach 91st Street was a success. Now he’s back, organizing more art shows in the neighborhood. His newest project, called Shows in Spaces, is located in a remodeled bungalow, built in 1920, at 311 Beach 73rd Street. The space is furniture free and

includes two distinctive rooms containing work by 11 artists. The exhibition opened on September 7 and will be open noon to 5 p.m. on weekends through September 28, plus during weekdays by appointment. There will be a party for the show on Saturday, September 14, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitors can then continue the party at nearby bars and restaurants. Celebrating 205 Years of Life! By Kami-Leigh Agard

This past Tuesday, September 10, two residents at Promenade Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (PRHCC) celebrated 205 years of life. Quite an amazing milestone, as though according to Time magazine, life expectancy in the U.S. exceeds the global average, clocking in at just under 79 years, Ella Greene who recently turned 103 years old and Julian Castillo now 102, both exuberantly exceed those stats. Maybe it’s living near the everlasting Atlantic Ocean or the wonderful care they get at PRHCC, which is also celebrating its own milestone of 50 years of giving care to residents. Who knows the magic formula, but these two centenarians were serenaded at an epic birthday party that had all the residents, staff and family present in a state of jubilee. Both Greene and Castillo live on the same floor. Greene, whose birthday was on September 1, said the birthday party was something she will always cherish and remember, and remember she will as her memory is like an elephant’s. “I didn’t expect this party. It’s something I will always remember, and I don’t forget.” Greene was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1916. “I had an aunt and an uncle, wealthy people, who invited me to come to their home in the U.S. I came from a poor family, and they kindly offered to bring myself and my sibling here in New York. I then later married and had one son,” Greene said. Aviva Kiffel, who is on PRHHC’s administrative staff, said despite Greene’s hardships in life, she is so coherent and sweet. “Ella does not like to talk about her husband and son. She lost her son in an accident. The staff loves her. Look at how they styled her hair. We just wanted to make it a special day for a truly special lady,” Kiffel

said. Greene has no reported living family. Castillo, born in 1917, is an old school Puerto Rican casanova, who loves to dance and listen to music, but do not interrupt him while he is having his afternoon nap, as he will give you a powerful jab right in the kisser! According to Marie Simmonds, PRHCC’s director of recreation for the past 15 years, this was another momentous birthday party commemorating two residents hitting above the 100-year benchmark. “This is nothing short of amazing and inspiring,” Simmonds said. “It’s great to have this type of celebration. It boosts the morale of not just the residents, but the staff. This facility survived Sandy, and it’s because of our dedicated staff, some of whom live in the area. Every time we look out the window and look at the new boardwalk, it’s a reminder of how strong this community is,” Simmonds reflected. “We don’t see this often, and it’s all just a testimony of how invested our staff is to the all-around wellness and longevity of our residents. This is why we wanted to commemorate Ella’s and Julian’s birth dates with a huge birthday bash. They are such an amazing and vibrant duo that we knew that we had to go all out to celebrate their over 100 years of life. And not to mention, this is PRHHC’s 50th anniversary!” Simmonds exclaimed. At the party, Greene and Castillo and all in attendance were serenaded with Broadway songs and oldies music. Plus Congressman Gregory Meeks awarded two citations to both Greene and Castillo, for their momentous legacy as centenarians. 4th Annual RBBU Bodysurfing Championship What a cracker of a weekend! Knowing that Saturday was going to bring epic conditions for the contest, the NYC Parks Dept. do what they do best, get involved and messed everything up by announcing they were closing the beaches due to a knee jerk reaction by a politician in his ivory tower in Manhattan who knows nothing about the ocean, waves or currents. Needless to say, the NYC Parks Dept. was helpless in stopping surfers and bodysurfers entering the waters both Friday and Saturday, with Saturday simply being the best surf the entire year. There was an entourage of famous bodysurfers from California who came out for the contest, heavy hitters like Tim Burnham and Shane Macintyre from The Wedge in Newport Beach with their collective eyes on the prize of winning

the event. The display of their skills on Saturday in those epic conditions, 10 – 12’waves, was eyepopping, showing moves most of us have never seen in person. The contest had to be moved to Sunday, leaving all of us fearful that it was going to be flat for the contest. Thankfully King Neptune kept the buzz going with lined up waves all day long for the 72 contestants to strut their stuff, and boy there was some major strutting going. Shane Macintyre catching waves multiple times to the sand, spinning and shooting spouts of the wave multiple times like a dolphin. Bridget Klapinski holding the fort as the only female to ever make it to the final and ultimately placing 3rd overall with such domination and grace all the way to the beach almost every single ride. came to Sandon Karinsky, the defending champion. After watching Shane all day, Sandon was pretty convinced he wasn’t going to win, but with the grit he knows best when he’s been up against the best in swim meets and surf competitions, he grinded out the final, catching almost 20 waves and pulling moves like Shane. In the end, there was only 3.5 points spread between the top

six contestants but Sandon reigned supreme, winning the 2019 Rockaway Beach Bodysurfing Underground Championship. Humungous shout-outs to the founders of the event, Jeremy Jones, Clare Hilger, Mike Poindexter and John Wagner. St. Camillus / St. Virgilius Basketball Registration Registration for the St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Community Basketball programs will take place in the St. Camillus gym (Springman Hall) on Tuesday, September 24, and on Thursday, September 26 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will be a final registration held on Wednesday, October 2, also from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All games are played at St. Camillus. Anyone from Kindergarten to the 8th grade is eligible to play. The Mini program (Kindergarten to the 3rd grade) play on Saturday mornings; the Boys’ program (4th to the 8th grade) play primarily on Wednesday and Thursday nights; and the Girls’ program (4th to the 8th grade) play on Wednesday nights. All players signing up who are in the 6th to the 8th grade must bring a birth

certificate to registration. The registration fee will be $75 for the first child and $10 for each additional child (sisters and brothers only).
