17 Years Later: Rockaway Remembers 9/11 It was a somber morning on Tuesday, September 11, and the dreary weather was fitting as crowds gathered around Tribute Park to remember those who were killed in the attacks on September 11, 2001. Although it has been 17 years since that tragic day, Tuesday’s ceremony proved that Rockaway hasn’t forgotten. Community leaders, first responders and neighbors filed in to Tribute Park on Tuesday
morning for a ceremony that included bagpipers, raising the flag to half staff, the reading of the names of those killed that were from Rockaway, along with the placing of roses around the memorial compass in the center of the park, plus music by Aerial Acoustics, including Dorothy Wagner and Dennis Smith, with the vocals of Chazmond Peacock and Steven Wagner. No Tipping Point I hope you had a nice summer and didn’t ask for separate checks at a busy restaurant. Which brings me to tipping. Which, it turns out, is not a subject for a column but a book. Or at least a three-part column. There’s a whole iceberg under the subject of tipping. It’s cultural, it’s optional, it’s expected, it’s becoming obsolete and more widespread. Widespread, as in the proliferation of tip jars. I’m waiting for one to show up at my doctor’s office. You sign in and there’ll be a jar with a little sign: Malpractice insurance is killing me, please help. As you know, I’m an expert on back pain, foot cramps, and bidets, but tipping is some byzantine shite that no bidet can handle. It’s an art that needs to be a science. To start, there’s pre-tipping. That’s pro-active, semi-professional tipping. You give the waiter or bartender a few dollars right away to ensure top service all night and then you tip again at the end of the evening. This is not foolproof and deserves a few paragraphs but I can’t expound because I’m already aggravated about places that automatically add the tip. Nothing bugs me more than a tip that’s pre-added to a bill. The first time I came across this outrage was in the Bahamas, a million years ago.
The service was god-awful. I know there’s island time but you shouldn’t be made to feel like Tom Hanks in Cast Away. I followed the waitress at one point to see if she was actually climbing trees to fetch coconuts for that piña colada that was ordered an hour earlier. She wasn’t. She was having a good laugh with kitchen help and other staff. And in between she was probably badmouthing the cheapskate tourists. I couldn’t wait to show my fury when it came to the tip. That’s when I discovered the 15 percent was already tacked on. The lesson was clear to me: the waiter didn’t have to hustle if the tip was guaranteed. I guess the addon tip was a defense against cheapskate British or French tourists who are notorious for stiffing the staff. But that doesn’t make it right for the rest of us. And what if service is excellent even though the tip has been built in? Do you add another five percent? I don’t know. But don’t ask a waiter, they’ll all say yes. I get it, waiters need good tippers to make up for the tightwads. Not that I’m pure in all this. As a very young man, a despicable teenager, in fact, I traveled across country with a buddy. We were often broke but sometimes had enough money for all the beer you could drink at a Steak N Brew

or some such place. It was the bargain of the land. Man, just $4.95 for a burger and all the pitchers of pissy beer you could handle. Anyway, where was I? Oh, tipping. My buddy and I knew a tip was customary and only fair, but that hardly mattered. We’d consider the service with a damning eye. We made up our own game, Tip or Top? They’d get a tip if everything was flawless. They’d get a Top – which is a tip with a zero (0) in the middle— if anything was off. We’d always find something wrong. The waiter’s hair. His or her name. Whatever would justify the Top not a Tip. Of this, I am not proud. I like to think some penance has been paid since I now often over-tip. But I’m not so generous that I don’t want some acknowledgment that the healthy gratuity was appreciated. If the tip is above and beyond, I hope the waitperson puts a little emphasis on the “thank you.” If they don’t, I just die a little.

Anyway, this tipping thing is a minefield. There’s the 15 or 20 percent guideline that assumes 15 percent for soso service and 20 for good. Some people double the sales tax and that seems okay. But what if you’re in a diner and you and a friend each get a coffee and a muffin. The bill comes to, I don’t know, $6.40. Twenty percent is $1.28. Twenty percent tip sounds good until you realize it’s a dollar freakin’ twenty-eight. And if you’ve got singles, it’s one thing. What if you only have a ten? You’re not gonna wait for change, are you? It’s a minefield, I tell ya. For those who came here hoping for a tip about how and who to tip, I have no idea. I know, that’s not a tip, that’s a top.

FDNY Battles Major Far Rockaway Fire Sirens blared throughout the neighborhood as local FDNY units and those from as far as Brooklyn were called to the scene of a four-alarm apartment building fire in Far Rockaway on Sunday, September 9. Due to quick action, there were no fatalities, but some were hospitalized and many families were left displaced.
A fire broke out on the seventh floor of 439 Beach 22nd Street on Sunday at about 5:55 p.m. Flames and heavy smoke could be seen billowing from the roof of the building. The fire quickly grew to a four-alarm, requiring heavy backup. According to the FDNY press office, 38 units and 168 firefighters were on the scene. FDNY

was able to save the building and the fire was under control by 8:20 p.m. There were no casualties, but the FDNY press office says there were "19 patients," including 11 firefighters and eight civilians. Their injuries were non-life threatening. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Soon after the fire, the American Red Cross arrived on scene to assist displaced families. The Red Cross registered a total of six families with a total of 23 adults and seven children. If you'd like to help those affected, Queens Law Associates (1857 Mott Avenue) is holding a collection. Primary Day is on Thursday this time around. ***** According to the Commercial Observer, a media company covering commercial real estate, because Rockaway is experiencing a wave of residential development, there will be a retail boom. A senior executive at Cushman & Wakefield says the condos going up on Beach 116th Street “changes everything.” ***** There was lots of online griping about a block party on Beach 129th Street being broken up last Saturday by local police. The permit expired at 10 p.m. which is when police showed up to shut things down. According to the DJ, there were 16 police officers there to put

Another block party, just a few blocks away, had no such issue and one person said a couple of cops were there at 10:30 p.m. hugging some residents. From the MTA: The Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge will be closed to traffic in both directions during overnight hours on weekdays through Friday morning, September 28. There will be no closures on weekends. During this time, all traffic will be detoured to the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge between 11:00 p.m. and 5 a.m., including the Q35 bus. Further uptown, residents are concerned they will be less protected. An Army Corps spokesman said: “The groins are only to mitigate the erosion hot spots that are identified in the computer erosion modeling. The groins do not continue into the 140s be-
cause they are considered not necessary or useful. The footprint of the dune counts too. Remember, the Federal government is doing this for storm damage protection, not blanket space for recreation.” The Army Corps released its revised study last week. Warning! Climate Signals Hit the Boardwalk By Katie McFadden
“No Icebergs Ahead,” “Climate Change At Work,” “Human Agenda Ahead,” “Alt Facts End Now,” “Climate Denial Kills.” Do we have your attention yet? If not, a new sign on the boardwalk hopes to grab your attention with these messages. Last week, a highway sign flashing LED messages about climate change appeared on the boardwalk at Beach 94th Street. It isn’t part of some political protest, but rather a city-approved art installation that’s taking place across the five boroughs. When the highway sign displaying the climate change-inspired sayings in English and Spanish, appeared on the boardwalk at the beginning of the month, it sure raised a lot of questions, proving that the mission of the sign is already working. The sign and the nine others like it, located across the five boroughs, are meant to garner attention and draw people in to the climate conversation so they start thinking and talking more about the subject. The signs are part of an exhibit presented by The Climate Museum, in partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office – Climate Policy and Programs, called Climate Signals. Also partnering with the NYC Parks Department, permission was granted by Parks, with the blessing of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association, to place one of the signs on the boardwalk. The signs and sayings are the brainchild of contemporary visual artist, Justin Brice Guariglia, whose art often focuses on environmental subjects. Guariglia is a Howard Foundation Fellow at Brown University and an artist-in-residence at the Anchorage Museum and Woods Hole Research Center. In 2016, Guariglia became the first artist to fly on earth science missions with NASA. He currently has another highway sign piece on display in Storm King Art Center’s climate-focused show, Indicators: Artists on Climate Change. About a year ago, Guariglia says Miranda Massie, director of the Climate Museum, approached him with a proposal to display his work around the city and
planning began. “This project is about getting people to think ecologically, and because this project is done with the Climate Museum, it’s focused more on climate-related efforts and climate justice. Climate change and global warming is a global issue, not just a small local issue. It’s the greatest challenge that humanity has ever faced and it’s paradoxically difficult for us to communicate,” Guariglia said. However, one way to catch people’s attention and get the word across is with highway signs. “I was traveling down a highway and was thinking about the words of philosophers I had been reading, and I started thinking of ways to communicate these words in a way that really appeals to the public and gets their attention since this stuff is so urgent. It’s hard to get things across since we’re drowning in social media and advertisements and TV, so I was thinking, how do you cut through that? One of the ways they do that on highways is by putting up these flashing LED signs that get your attention really fast,” Guariglia said. “If the signs can do that on a highway, but we pull it out of its context and put it in a park space, that really gets your attention. The sign represents a warning, so when we put it in a place that’s really unexpected, we have this double whammy where if it gets people to stop, and it gets people thinking about climate change, then hopefully we’re doing our part as a public service announcement.” The Rockaway boardwalk is just one of those locations where people may not expect to see a highway sign, and according to the organizers of the exhibit,

it’s a fitting spot. “Rockaway is on the front line of climate change, in terms of its vulnerability with it being hit hard by Sandy, and in terms of response post-Sandy, as the people there have been leaders in thinking about resilience and preparedness and responding to the reality of the climate crisis. We were excited to bring the Climate Signals to Rockaway to celebrate that leadership that Rockaway has demonstrated and we love how the sign looks with the boardwalk on one side and the ocean on the other,” Claudia Villar, the Climate Museum’s Research and Communications Coordinator, said. “Rockaway is a very vulnerable area. The conversation on climate change needs to be happening in places that are vulnerable. My hope is that the community will start thinking and talking about these issues,” Guariglia added. Besides having the sign on display, The Climate Museum has teamed up with the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and other organizations to offer programming in conjunction with the exhibit. One of these programs will take place on Sunday, September 30. All are welcome to join for the Bay to Beach Climate Walk and Arts Workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The program includes a tour of Rockaway from the bay to the beach, as participants see evidence of the impacts of climate change, such as elevated homes, Sandy water lines, plus the changes that Rockaway has made to become more resilient, such as the new boardwalk. The tour will end at the Climate Signal. Following the tour, there will be an artist-led workshop focused on expressing climate
emotions through visual art. As climate change is a subject that won’t go away anytime soon, the Climate Signals exhibit is just the beginning of what The Climate Museum has in store. Although this is the Museum’s second exhibition, The Climate Museum does not yet have a permanent home. On September 21, the Museum will be celebrating not only the Climate Signals project, but the opening of a temporary Climate Museum hub at the Admiral’s House on Governor’s Island. This temporary hub will be open through the end of October. The Climate Museum then aims to open a temporary “museum lab” by 2020 to test out other exhibition concepts and to begin fundraising for a permanent home for The Climate Museum, which aims to draw in one million visitors a year. Even though the permanent museum is a long ways away, organizers say the time to discuss the climate is now, hence early efforts like the Climate Signals project. “There’s an urgency to get climate programming out there. We want people talking about this problem sooner than later,” Villar said. The Climate Signals exhibit will be on display through November 6. If you spot a sign, organizers encourage people to take photos and use the hashtag #climatesignalsnyc on social media, so others can learn more about the project. More Groins, Please Dear Editor: I quickly browsed the revised ACOE plans for coastal protection in Rockaway that was released last week. I immediately found the section that detailed the plans for new groin / jetty installations, and was surprised to see that the original plan to have the groins end at Beach 121st Street had not been changed. Anyone who has been

With his bus redesign stop removal due to inadequate plan, we can expect bus stop to the beaches between 121st to 149th can clearly see there’s more need for protection. Furthermore, the beaches between 139th to 149th are in dire condition. As of writing this email (Monday 9/10), the water is currently hitting the dunes on those beaches. I have made a few inquiries as to why the original plan didn’t include new groins anywhere between 121st to 149th, and was told it was due to budgetary concerns. I find it hard to believe that a few of the planned groins from Beach 1st to Beach 121st can’t be relocated to somewhere between 121st and 149th. I sent an email to the appropriate individuals for comments on the revised plans, and hopefully they have a good scientific reason for neglecting over a mile of beach that is already much smaller than the areas that are getting new groins. Until the MTA starts caring more about the passengers and stops its penny pinching, we can look forward to more ridership losses resulting in additional service reductions. Once someone leaves the system for alternative travel, the MTA no longer considers them part of demand. The bus routing redesign must focus on reducing total passenger trip times, which is not done simply by removing bus stops. Anchor's Away! Boating Is the Way To Go In Rockaway! By Kami-Leigh Agard
Boating in Rockaway is a three-part series by The Rockaway Times highlighting the amazing experiences locals and visitors alike can experience in our beautifully rich Jamaica Bay. You may be surprised by the resources that are available for everyone to enjoy, right here in our local waters, if you have the opportunity to take a memorable adventure. In our inaugural article, Boating In Rockaway, The Rockaway Times (RT) described the beautiful sites to behold after being gifted a tour of Jamaica Bay from Arverne’s Vernam Basin to beyond Breezy Point’s tip by local boater, Peter Galvin. In this second installation — from kayaking, cruising, houseboat living to even where you can rent or buy your own boat — we introduce you to the many local inlets, where landlubbers too, can go overboard and rock boat life in Rockaway. According to Jolene Willis-Lujan, an ecologist with the National Park Service at Gateway and local resident, before wading out, keep in mind that Jamaica Bay is part of a national park and because of that, access to the islands, which include The Raunt, Big Egg, Elders West, Elders East, Yellow Bar, Black Walk, Ruler’s Bar and Ruffle Bar, are restricted. “We have a lot of federally-protected birds such as water fowls, cormorants, Osprey and more, that nest on those islands, which are fragile ecosystems. We started restoring the marshlands on these islands in 2005. Some of the islands are active restorations, so we want to give them the best chance at success for survival,” Willis-Luan said. Despite these restrictions, there are still ways for you to indulge in boating life on the bay. Kayaking Since 2008, nonprofit organization, Gateway Bike & Boathouse (GBB), in conjunction with the NPS has been offering kayaking out of Riis Landing (across from Fort Tilden) and
Bay Breeze Park at Beach 88th Street and Beach Channel Drive. GBB is staffed by volunteer paddlers, and offers a unique experience for both novice and veteran paddlers to explore. Rick Horan, founder and executive director of GBB, said he was inspired to start this organization after his own frustrations with finding an open docking site to launch his own boat. “In Jamaica Bay, there were no public access points to launch a small vessel. Initially, we thought to just create a storage and launch area, but then decided this was a great way to introduce everyone to kayaking on the bay for free. This is why we named it the Community Boathouse because it’s really about serving the community — from the volunteers who come out to help, to those who come out to learn and experience kayaking on the bay,” Horan said. Though the summer days are waning away, GBB plans to stay open through September, as the water is still warm. “The biggest variant is the weather,” Horan said. “As long as it’s not too cold, too windy nor too much chop, we plan to be open.” Open paddles do not require a reservation, but guided tours do. Houseboat Living Over the summer, Greg Pulaski and his girlfriend, Veronica Gonzalez O’Ferral, have been living on the Figment, a modest houseboat that offers a luxurious lifestyle. Born and raised in Rockaway, Pulaski is the definition of a sea baby as he is a lifeguard, surf instructor and gypsie of sorts. “Veronica and I both live where we work, but without the hassle of a house,” Pulaski joked. Inside their houseboat, they enthusiastically show off their tiny kitchenette, sleeping area and porch on top of the boat, which
has a majestic view of the bay. “This summer has been challenging due to the weather, but we love this tiny community of houseboats we live in. This is a perfect way to get back to the present moment, where all that matters is a roof over our head, with the bay as our backyard and the stars as our night light,” Gonzalez-O’Ferral said. In Marina 59, located on Beach 59th Street, retiree Carlos Betancourt, is also enjoying his ripe years of doing what he loves, fishing and living on the bay. Betancourt said he resides on his boat from April to November. “I’ve been coming to this Marina for over 40 years, and this is the life I planned for my retirement. I get up in the morning, get on my neighboring motor boat to go fishing and come home to eat,” he said.“Don’t get me wrong, I love this life, but there are many challenges, such as just the other day when the tide surged through, covering the dock and flowing into the streets. However, we all look out for each other. As long as the boats are tied up securely, we are fine,” Betancourt said. Renting or Buying Your Own Boat At Marina 59, you can do both, and according to owner, Ari Zablozki, all you need is a driver’s license. NYS does not require a boater’s license, but it is recommended that you get a NYS Boating Safety Certificate. Marina 59 has been around since the 1940s, and Zablozki says he loves the community. “This marina is special because of the diversity of people that dock their boats here. However, owning a boat, takes a lot more work than owning a car, but there’s a spirituality in enjoying the ocean and the bay. It’s a pathway to a new life,” Zablozki said. AOH Donates Irish Fest Proceeds

On the evening of Monday, September 10, officers and members of Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division 21 of Rockaway Beach and Breezy Point once again held true to their motto of “Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,” as they donated $23,000 of their 6th Annual Irish Festival proceeds to local parishes and organizations. At the first stop, the Hibernians, led by President Mark Edwards, met Pastor Peter Rayder of Blessed Trinity Parish in Saint Thomas More Church to present the parish with a check for $2,500. Father Rayder appreciatively accepted the generous donation and announced that the donation will be earmarked for the parish’s youth group, so that the children can continue their great works of Christian chari-
ty for the elderly and infirmed of the Breezy Point community. The next stop was at Saint Francis de Sales Rectory where the group gave an identical $2,500 check to Pastor William Sweeney. Father Sweeney graciously accepted the donated funds and said that he will personally see that it goes to a worthy cause in the parish. The final stop of the evening saw the kind-hearted Irishmen stopping by St. Camillus Church to present Pastor Richard Ahlemeyer with a check for $15,000. Father Richard who has cordially hosted the Irish Festival at St. Camillus since its inception in 2013, thanked the Hibernians for their continuing generosity and Christian charity before gratefully accepting the money for his parish. ers Gaelic Football Team and the Rockaway Knights of Columbus Council. This year’s round of donations brings the six-year total of Irish Fest proceeds bestowed to local parishes, Irish programs and Catholic organizations to just over $200,000.

It’s a Farm Affair By Katie McFadden
Did you know the Campaign Against Hunger has its own farm right in Rockaway? On Thursday, September 20, the group is welcoming the community for a dinner and ceremony to recognize community members who have gone above and beyond in the areas of stewardship and community giving, including Sarah and Chris Romulo, Dr. Camesha Grant and Rev. Even D. Gray of Macedonia Baptist Church. The Campaign Against Hunger (CAH), an organization first established as the Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger in 1998, has a mission of ending hunger by distributing food, as well as empowering families by offering support for social services and providing nutritional and agricultural education. The Bed-Stuy food pantry expanded by opening its own farm in Brooklyn and after Hurricane Sandy, the organization expanded again by opening another farm at 385 Beach 45th Street in 2013. The half-acre
space is used to grow fruits, vegetables and edible flowers, and houses 40 chickens that provide farm fresh eggs. “Over the course of the harvest season, we have had 20,000 pounds of produce from the Far Rockaway farm and the one in Brooklyn,” Mariah Harris, CAH’s Development and Communications Associate, said. On Thursday, September 20, the Far Rockaway farm is hosting its second annual Growing Community Event, It’s a Farm Affair. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., all are welcome to come check out the farm and enjoy food prepared by Chef Troy Fischer. There will also be music and dancing, a raffle, the ability to buy fresh produce at the farm’s farmer’s market, plus a special ceremony recognizing those who know about giving back to the community. “We wanted to honor members of the community that are going above and beyond community service by dedicating themselves to bettering the community. We pick a handful of people based on the work they do to honor each year,”
Harris said. Dr. Camesha Grant, Vice President of Community Connections for the Food Bank for NYC, is among the honorees. “Dr. Grant has done outstanding work throughout the city in terms of addressing hunger. We’ve worked with her in the past and she’s been a great champion of the cause,” Harris said. Owners of the local gym, CROM Physical Culture, Sarah and Chris Romulo, are also among the honorees. “They focus on the physical activity aspect of health and nutrition that our organization is dedicated to. Everyone has nothing but wonderful things to say about them and their business, so we thought who better to honor in the community than these two? They have a great gym space and they’re wonderful people,” Harris said. The third honoree is Rev. Evan D. Gray of Macedonia Baptist Church. “He’s been very involved in the community. Our staff members attend his church and have really wonderful things
to say about him and his dedication to improving the community and his congregation,” Harris said. CLARE REMEMBERED 3 ON 3 TOURNEY IS SEPT 22 The Fifth Annual 3 on 3 By The Sea will take place on Saturday, September 22 at St. Francis de Sales. The event was started and organized for the previous years by Rockaway icon and basketball legend, Clare Droesch, following her diagnosis with cancer. Droesch passed away this May after a courageous battle that beat the odds and predictions of her doctors for many years. Her family and friends will now honor her by continuing this great event. The day will begin with a youth clinic in the gym at 9 a.m. before moving into the schoolyard for the competition. Play will begin at 10 a.m. with the Grammar School divisions followed by the High School divisions at 12 p.m. The Open divisions will then take to the blacktop at 2 p.m. The event will include music by a DJ, as well as refreshments
and apparel for sale. A postevent party is also planned at The Wharf that evening. The entry fee is $50/player and $10 for spectators. All proceeds will go to establish the Clare Droesch Memorial Scholarship Fund. Advance registration is encouraged to ensure your team's entry in the event. The registration form is available on the Graybeards website: www. theGraybeards.com. Honey Fest This Saturday This weekend will be the bees knees. The 8th Annual NYC Honey Festival is Saturday, September 15. Bring your sweet tooth and head to the Beach 106th Concession between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to get your honey fix. Honey Fest is back! On Saturday, you can buy all the honey you want, watch extraction demonstrations and even participate in a honey tasting contest. The bee marketplace, where you can buy all your favorite bee and honey products, will be open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. The honey tasting competition, to determine who makes the best honey out there, will take place between 12 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. At 1 p.m., you’ll have the chance to meet the NYC Bee Cop Darren Mays. He’s one of the NYPD officers that helped round up the bees that swarmed a hot dog truck
in Times Square a few weeks ago, plus he’s there for all of NYC’s bee-mergencies. At 3 p.m., there will be a honey extraction demonstration, so you can get a firsthand look at how honey is obtained. At 5 p.m., the winner of the honey tasting contest will be announced. Epicness! What an amazing weekend. The last weekend of the summer season is always stacked with goodness, great vibes and outpouring of gratitude. For the last few years, that particular weekend has two surf events that spark smiles all around. Saturday, September 8 saw the 3rd Annual Rockaway Beach Bodysurfing Contest run by the great Rockaway Beach Bodysurfing Underground (Jeremy Jones, Claire Hilger, Mike Poindexter and John Wagner) in thumping 5-6 foot surf, run in what’s known as “The Box.”
With an initial field of 72 bodysurfers in 12 heats, quarters and semis narrowed the competition down to a top six that fought it out to be number one—who just happened to be my son, Sandon Karinsky. You could not top the stoke level of this event. I’ve been in hundreds of surf contests in the course of my life, but this event is all about high fives and cheering on your competitors. Thanks goes out to everyone involved, and to Rippers for hosting the awards ceremony with free beers to competitors

Sunday is always reserved for the Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic. Such a great day with the best vibes despite the sullen weather. The surf was bigger than Saturday and was pretty hard for the youngest ones to get out, but for those who could, there was ripping all around. With cash prizes for the top three in each division, it always makes the kids gloat

Well done to another epic event by the Allen family and the Stathis family in honoring an amazing man taken from us too soon.

The Stress of Stress It has long been known that psychiatric reactions to lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stresses are common and can lead to immune system dysfunctions. Recently, the results of a study done in Scandinavia were published. The study looked at whether there was an association between stress-related disorders and autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases, much more common in women as opposed to men, cause the immune system to make antibodies that attack the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s organs. The reasons for this are not well understood. The results of the study were very interesting as the study
found a strong association between significant life stress and the subsequent development of an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases come in many shapes and forms. Examples include thyroid diseases (Hashimotoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thyroiditis), lupus, Sjogrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s syndrome, and a recently discovered disease called latent autoimmune diabetes of adults, or LADA. LADA, also called diabetes 1.5, is a mix of type I and type II diabetes. In type I diabetes, formerly known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the cells within the pancreas that make insulin are destroyed.
Many experts think this is caused by a viral infection. The result is that the patient, typically a teenager or pre-teen, must take insulin to control the blood sugar. Type I diabetes does not respond to oral medications. In type II diabetes, formerly known as adult-onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes, the pancreas does make insulin however the amount of insulin, is insufficient or there is a condition known as insulin resistance that makes the insulin less effective. This condition often responds to oral medications and insulin injections are usually not needed. Type II diabetes is often inherited, and obesity is a significant risk factor. Now along comes LADA, aka diabetes 1.5. It is a mix of both type I and type II diabetes, therefore the 1.5 designation. Those with LADA make some insulin but not enough to keep the blood sugar controlled, thereby needing insulin injections to control the blood sugar. LADA is often diagnosed when older adults, who are presumed to have type II diabetes, do not
respond well to the usual medications prescribed for type II. The clinician can perform a blood test called c-peptide, which measures the amount of insulin the pancreas is producing. In type I diabetes, the c-peptide level is nearly zero, whereas in type II it is normal. In LADA, the c-peptide level is below normal but not zero. The Scandinavian study now suggests that LADA, an autoimmune disease, and many other autoimmune diseases may be directly linked to significant life stresses and the psychological damage those stresses may cause. It is easy to say one should avoid stress, however that is easier said than done, especially if you have children. If you have type II diabetes that is not responding well to treatment (and you are compliant with following your diet and taking your meds), have your doctor check to see if you have LADA. What’s In A Word? Sometimes Everything. By Kathy Lord
In India, when people meet and part they often say “Namaste.” The word comes from Sanskrit and literally means, “bowing to you” or “I bow to you.” There is an increasing use of this word in the yoga communities, but words are empty unless
there is action behind them. Let’s start here with a beautiful description of the word: Namaste - I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides. I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace. I honor the place in you where if you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, there
is only one of us.” - From “Polishing The Mirror” by Ram Dass The first time I ever read that particular definition, it struck me like a bolt of lightening. It was like I had found the answer: THAT’S IT, WE ARE ALL ONE AND THAT’S WHY! We all have the same light deep inside of us; a thread from the same cloth that connects us all—a great simple truth. But here’s the thing; just saying the word doesn’t make a bit of difference. It’s living the meaning of the word that makes the difference. It’s a small seven-letter word that has infinite dimension. Take a minute to absorb the meaning of the following paragraph: there is a place inside of each of us that is the same, a beautiful place, of love, of light, that each one of us has within us, even the person who seems to be cranky or irritating or annoying or negative. Yes, they too have that place deep inside of them, though it might be harder to find. So, how do we live that
The Rockaway Times word when we encounter an irritating, cranky person? Ah, that is the question and the challenge; the very thing we all need to help us “polish our mirror.” When we are able to do this, we begin to change not only ourselves, but the world around us. Think about how easy it is to be with people who are happy, positive, fun, and enthusiastic. It’s a breeze, no challenge, nothing to even think about. Now, put a negative, cranky person in a group of easy-toget-along-with people and what choices will you make? Your test has begun. Will you greet that person with the word “namaste” as well? If you do, shouldn’t you mean it? Don’t they also have that light and love deep inside them somewhere as well or is that only inside of happy, fun people? have any love inside of them. Of course, that’s not true. We all have a light within, perhaps hidden in a cave deep within, but it’s there. It is those very people who seem to have no light at all (but remember they do) that need us to embrace them and love them all the more. When we embrace the “hard to embrace cranky pants,” they almost don’t know what to do. You can almost hear them thinking, “Hey, why is this person showing me love? Nobody shows me love (hence one of the reasons they are probably cranky). Boy, this feels good. They are not like everyone else, people are usually so mean to me. I want what they have.” So perhaps your example helps them take another step on their journey towards the light, which I believe is where we all ultimately want to be. When you embrace the “Un-embraceable You,” you are living the word namaste

The point is not to do something so that you get a certain result. You do what’s good for your development as a loving spiritual being and that energy will bear its own fruit. The Real Deal By Lou Pastina
This past week, we lost a local who came here from far away. He passed way too young and left two sons and a wife. He is the epitome of the American Dream, arriving here from his native Philippines finding work, a wife, a family and a whole new life. I listened to the eulogy delivered by his two sons and realized I only knew him slightly, as a neighbor and friend, but what I knew of him was true.
He was the type of person we aspire to be, but sometimes fall short of. He worked several jobs, and he and his wife always put their kids' well-being and education first. He always had a smile on his face, even during that terrible storm, Sandy, that eventually put him out of his home and off our block to another block a few streets away. His sons talked about a father who was funny and caring and giving. No father would have been prouder to hear their sons speak of them in the love and
reverence that they did. If our greatest assets are our kids, then this man was a millionaire many times over. His wife is the sweetest person ever. And at the wake she exhibited the grace and class of a princess. Last year his eldest got married and there were several pictures of him having a great time at this proud moment. He and his wife worked hard and provided a path for their kids that eventually led to Georgetown and Villanova, with one a doctor and the other an engineer. I am not sure this path is available anymore in the land of Trump, although somehow, I feel that this couple would have found a way. Moments like this cause one to reflect on your own life. Have I worked hard enough to provide a better life for my kids? Was I selfless enough to put my self-interests aside to better my family, better my community, my country? Why did this man leave us so soon? Could it have been me? Could it have been any of my friends

These are tough questions, but good ones because they force us to look deep inside and consider how one is spending their precious moments on this earth, because the time is not guaranteed. And it provides an opportunity for “course” corrections if necessary. Sometimes the corrections are minor, and sometimes you have to turn the boat around and start over. But at least you are given a chance. This man had touched many in the community and at his work. The outpouring was heartfelt. His legacy will live long after he is gone through his family and the lives he touched. I always remember meeting them for the first time and being introduced to their eldest son, JR. I asked what JR stood for, thinking it was the kid's initials. Turns out I was wrong, it was the parent’s initials, the product of the two of them. How sweet. Yes, he was the Real deal, rest easy Joe, you did a great job.

storm surge along coastal areas, another huge danger from Florence is more likely to come from inland flooding. Although Florence is clipping along at a steady pace right now through the Atlantic, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forecasted to hit the brakes once it moves farther inland. If Florence actually stalls and parks itself over inland areas of the south, it could unload up to 32 inches of rain onto parts of North Carolina and Virginia, which usually only see around 40 to 50 inches in a given year. Anyone remember the inland flooding problems wrought by Hurricane Irene back in 2011? Thankfully, at the present time, it appears that the only significant impacts from Florence in our area will be high surf, strong rip currents, large offshore swells, beach erosion, and significant wind. Reason enough to be thankful as we keep our neighbors to the south in our thoughts and prayers. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

That being said, I can safely say that nobody on any of the streets that have been raised thus far views the new bulkheads and street heights as a panacea of all coastal flooding as is evidenced by the close attention all of us have paid on the approach of Hurricane Florence. As I am writing this column, all computer forecast models appear to be coming into agreement that Florence will make landfall well south of us just around the time this paper is published this week, as the window for the storm to miss the U.S. coast and turn harmlessly back has basically closed. If this storm track remains as expected, we will be spared the hurricane/tropical storm force winds and severe storm surges that our neighbors to the south will have to deal with, but it appears that Florence will continue intensifying up to a possible Category 4 storm prior to making landfall. In addition to the high winds and serious

This past weekend, as we slogged our way through the rain of what remained of Hurricane Gordon, we also experienced several periods of coastal flooding with spring tides coming off a new moon abetted by a continual northeast wind and accompanying high surf. Once again, I am happy to report that with its new bulkhead, storm and sewer infrastructure,
and raised roadway, tidal street flooding on West 12th Road was insignificant. We did experience some tidal inundation stemming from tidal water breaching several properties as a result of damaged, or in some cases missing, canal bulkheads at the rear of the properties, but that water was quickly dissipated via the newly designed street and storm drainage system. At one point, tidal street flooding was so commonplace that I started to think that our street would go under every time a monarch butterfly flapped its wings up in the wildlife refuge, around times of a full or new moon. In any event, it is indeed a pleasure not to have to run outside and move our cars off the block several times a month when our street transformed into West 12th Rover Road during a full or new moon, or because of a low-pressure system sitting off the coast. Of course, if anyone spots a large barn owl flapping its wings up in the Gateway preserve, that could be

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1-1/2 pounds of chicken cutlets, sliced thin **3/4 cup of sweet Vidalia onion dressing 1-1/2 cups cornflake crumbs Oil for sautéing 2 large onions, diced 1 pound sliced pastrami, diced ½ cup of duck sauce Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour sweet Vidalia dressing over the chicken and dip into
cornflake crumbs. Spray an ovenproof pan and place the cutlets in the dish. Cover and bake for 15 minutes. Heat frying pan and heat oil. Add onions until golden. Add pastrami and sauté 5-8 minutes. Add the duck sauce and cook until it boils. Pour the pastrami mixture over the cutlets and bake, uncovered for another 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy! **You can substitute Italian Dressing

Feeling Thankful, But Ready To Get Back to Basics

With our children back to school, though many parents are doing the happy dance, some like me, may be wistfully bidding adieu to another wonderful spring and summer in Rockaway. However, a beautiful quote by French philosopher and author, Albert Camus, comes to mind: “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” And as I reflect on the wonderful past few months our community had building autism awareness on the peninsula, indeed the gentle decline in temperatures and the golden mosaic of colors gently emerging from the foliage in our gardens and parks, definitely indicates a harvest from the wonderful year we had, and hope for sowing more connections in the months to come. Back in March, the Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF)
members gathered to brainstorm activities that we could woo the Rockaway populace atlarge to join in on building autism awareness on the peninsula. Also other local movers and shakers came to us with ideas of their own. Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) board member, Jason Heuer, came to our meeting to propose a screen printing activity at the RAA in April, which resulted in a memorable time, where both our pioneer and new RBAF members enjoyed working side-by-side to learn a new craft. RBAF family member, Jonathan Roberts, graciously brought his candy cotton machine, which the children loved, and his son, Hillel, treated everyone to his culinary prowess in baking delicious cookies. Plus as an added bonus, I got to blow out my birthday candles and share cake with everyone.

In June, the FDNY Foundation joined us in hosting a fire safety autism awareness event at St. Camillus. Though it was a gray day with looming clouds, the smiles on the children’s faces warmed all our hearts as they whooped with delight when they saw the firefighters from Engine 269 on Beach 116th Street, who treated the children to a tour of their fire truck. A special thank you to Father Richard of St. Camillus, who blessed us with the use of the church’s Springman Hall and parking lot; and Martha Acosta of local outdoor eatery, La Barracuda, who capped off the entire experience by accommodating us at her beautiful space with hammocks galore, which the children loved! July was a busy month, where we hosted an NYPD autism awareness event with the 100th Precinct, a Dance Out Under The Stars for Autism Awareness and the summer annual, Rock Out for Autism with local popular rocker, Jammin’ Jon. We are forever thankful to Sergeant Julie-Ann Stapleton, who rounded up the precinct's neighborhood community officers (NCOs), the NYPD’s Child Safety Unit, and mounted horses, which made quite an entrance on the Boulevard. The Dance Out was an epic success, thanks to RBAF member, Jane Garfield Frank, who came up with the idea; Caracas’ owner, Maribel Araujo and manager, Guido Alizo, for giving us use of their space; Deejay Byg Fury who had everyone on their feet dancing to his fabulous music; Gelen Rios of event planning company, Arma Tu Party, who delivered even more memorable moments with a photo booth. This year’s Rock Out was made even more ground-breaking with the debut of the first Malagasy band ever on the boardwalk, NY VALIHA; Jammin’ Jon; RCK 97; Guy Nevirs who performed with Kyle Wade; and the Timmy Burke Trio. Also a colossal shoutout to the local busi-
nesses that donated raffle prizes to the concert including: The Swellife, Uncle Louie G, Station RBNY, Boarders, Elegante Pizzeria, RB Soap Company, Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach, Zingara Vintage, Fat Cardinal Bakery, Harbor Wine & Spirits, Rockaway Beach Bakery, Cuisine By Claudette, Blue Bungalow and JKS Printing. And last, but certainly not least, Senator Joseph Addabbo, who came out with his family to support our autism community, and the countless RBAF family members who volunteered their time: Christine Dydzuhn, Katherine Schepper Ryan, Rado and Rojo Rafiringa, Hillel Roberts, who again tantalized everyone with his cookies; and Yvonne Colon’s son, William, who transformed attendees with his amazing face painting. There are countless others to thank, but hats off to locals, Tina Schlissel, Florence Ferguson and Trishia Bermudez, who always come out to support, and of course build an awesome momentum for autism awareness. And of course, Jason Heuer, who designed our t-shirts, flyers and RBAF logo. Earlier this month, RBAF member, Matt Wolf, came up with the gem of an idea to host a skateboard/pizza party at the skatepark on Beach 91st Street, and he made it happen last Saturday! Nicole Russell of Last Dragon Pizza donated and hand-delivered her mouthwatering signature pizza pies. We skated, we ate and skated some more, and most importantly, the community bonded and had fun! Thanks Matt! Now, it’s time to get back to basics and host our group meetings again. If you have suggestions for a meeting space, please share. Blues for Blue Bungalow Well this is a reason to be blue. The Blue Bungalow storefront is closing. The shop that has been on Beach 116th street since 2009, will be closing its doors at the end of October. However, the business will be switching gears and will still be operational online. On Wednesday, September 12, owners Liz Smith-Breslin and Jeanne Jamin, announced on Facebook that the storefront will be closing. “With sincere thanks & appreciation we want to let our customers know we will no longer be keeping our storefront on Beach 116th Street as of the end of October,” they said. “Going forward we will be focusing on our online business along with promoting our social media sales and our wholesale line. We are very excited for this new direction which will enable us to offer new & creative ideas & continue to provide all of you with handmade one-of-a-kind gifts, along with unique items

St. Camillus / St. Virgilius Basketball Registration
Registration for the St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Community Basketball programs will take place in the St. Camillus gym (Springman Hall) on Tuesday, September 25 and on Thursday, September 27, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will be a final registration held on Wednesday, October 3, also from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All games are played at St.
Camillus. All kids from kindergarten through the 8th grade are eligible to play. The Mini program (kindergarten to the 2nd grade) plays Saturday mornings; the Boys’ program (3rd to the 8th grade) plays on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights; and the Girls’ program (3rd to the 8th grade) plays on Wednesday nights. All players signing up for the Senior basketball programs (6th to the 8th grade) must bring a birth certificate to registration. The registration fee will be $75 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. As always, volunteers are needed to help make the program a success. If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, or as a program director, please come to registration and let the organizers know.
SFDS 2nd Grade Boys CYO Game Recap
The St. Francis de Sales 2nd grade boys’ soccer team started the season off on the right foot by winning their game against St. Joseph by a score of 4-2. The
team consistently applied pressure on the opposing goalie and played extremely well in a physical game. Outstanding goalie play by William Kelly and JW Youngberg kept St. Francis ahead for a majority of the game. The team was strengthened by the exceptional defensive play of Tommy Aiken, Matthew Miller and Phillip Adaszewski. Greg Brenna got St. Francis on the board with the team’s first goal of the season to even the score at 1-1 in the first half. Owen Shaffer put the team ahead for good soon thereafter by scoring on a beautiful charge through the entire St. Joseph’s defense, for his first goal of the season. The lead was ultimately extended to 4-2 as Michael Pedone and Giorgio Mazzaferro both netted their first goals of the year in the second half of the contest.

SFDS 3rd Grade Girls CYO Soccer Recap The 3rd Grade Girls CYO soccer season kicked off this past weekend with familiar faces on both sides as the St. Francis “S” team faced off with the St. Francis “M” squad. The familiarity between the two teams resulted in a tightly contested match, with SFDS M squeaking out a 1-0 victory. Scoring chances were few and far between for both sides because of the stellar goalie play. For Team S, the combination of Caroline Mullin, Kelsey Turchiano and Hayden Martin were amazing, thwarting numerous scoring opportunities by Cate Urciuoli, Ashley Ferriola and both Gabby and Caroline Casares. The lone goal of the game came on a beautifully executed pass from Ashley Ferriola to Keira Henry who netted the first goal of the CYO season for both teams. SFDS M and their dynamic goalie duo of Chloe Gallo and Elle Manley managed to keep their opponents at bay
all game, despite the consistent shots on goal by SFDS Team S’ Cassidy Shaffer, Lilly Mollaghan and Anne Carey, maintaining a 1-0 lead from midway through the first half until the final whistle. The strong midfield play of Addison and Mairead Fitzgerald for SFDS M also helped take some of the pressure off of their team’s goalkeepers while Maggie Butler did the same for SFDS S. These two teams typically play exciting games and this one was no exception.
SFDS Rookie Boys Win Home Opener St. Francis de Sales (SFDS) Rookie boys kicked off the start of their CYO soccer season with a win against Our Lady of Hope in a 2-1 nail biter on Saturday, September 9 at home. Despite both teams being short of players due to the fourday holiday weekend, as well as a variety of injuries, both teams came out fighting, looking to start their season off on the right path. The SFDS defense of Michael Nestor, Teddy Ostrander, and Kevin Watters held strong, allowing for only seven shots on goal for the whole game. Goalkeeper Matt Bambury had a spectacular game, saving six of those shots. The first goal was scored in the first half of play by midfielder Connor Monahan, with an assist by Matt Stack. Midfielder Matthew Schneider kept the ball moving forward, allowing the forwards of Ian Erhard, Ahmed Hakim, and Matty
