Overall. This year, the Best Adult Group will receive “The Kristine Caruso Award,” which is named in honor of a late lifelong mermaid, and a staple of the parade since its inception. The handmade trophies are almost complete, and in all my years covering this parade, they are clearly the best trophies yet. In order to receive extra consid eration, bribery is an encouraged practice in this ruthless competi tion. The judges will be expecting to cash in on this once in a lifetime opportunity (In order to maintain any semblance of justice, judges are only allowed to serve in one parade).Theparade will be wrapping up at the 97th Street concessions, where Max Power will be DJing the awards ceremony. Whalemina will be waiting patiently for the awards ceremony and the conclusion of the parade. Additionally, there will be face painters and activities for children and adults alike, and the annual t-shirts will be available for purchase.Afterthe awards, Junxion NYC will be taking over the afterpar ty with a team of DJs and perfor mances that will make you want to move and groove. You can register on Poseidonsparade.com. Same day registration will be available at Caracas. Come out and support Rockaway’s epic family friendly art parade.

boys and girls, seafarers and land lubbers, mermaids and mermen: This Sat urday, September 17, at high noon, Rockaway will be celebrating the end of the 2022 summer season with the 7th annual Poseidon’s Pa rade. This year’s parade looks to be a complete peninsula-wide blow out with sea creatures and cos tumed crustacean’s flooding the neighborhood for the annual end of summer stroll. Registration is wide open, and it is not too late to get your costume or group togeth er and join the insanity.

Speaking of judges, this year’s panel is a who’s who of Rockaway legends. This secret circuit court will be judging participants in 11 categories: Best Float, Best Pet, The “Ms. Colombia Award” (Best Individual), Best Block, Best Per formance, Best Children’s Group, Best Pub/Restaurant, Best Recy cled Materials, Best Bike, and Best

Many in the crowd spoke of how cops “have their hands tied” and are limited in how they can re spond now. Bail reform was also brought up as a reason for an uptick in crime. As a solution, neighbors suggested being mindful of lead ers they vote for. In the meantime, it was suggested that neighbors not only report all crimes by calling 911, but let current elected officials know as well, to put more pressure on.

A BIG SUMMER FOR CONCESSIONSBEACH

Some other concerns that were brought up were motorized vehicles on the boardwalk. The NCOs said they’re not able to chase after these vehicles once on the boardwalk, as it can create a deadly situation. Anoth er issue brought up, which comes up often, was panhandling on Beach 116th Street. The NCOS explained that due to low manpower in the precinct, they no longer have the foot patrol that was assigned to the block over the last two summers.

Crime Concerns Take Over Uptown NCO Meeting

As of Sunday, September 11, lifeguards blew their last whis tle for the season. Now NYC Parks is looking back and says after the Covid pandemic, Summer 2022 was one of the best for Rockaway’s conces sions.According to NYC Parks, 2022 was on track to be the most successful season for the Rock away Beach Concessions. Early gross receipts from Rockaway Beach Bazaar are showing a 47% increase from 2021, and a 3% increase from 2019 which was previously the most suc cessful season. And new this year, the Beach 97th Street Snack Bar will remain open all year long, so New Yorkers can enjoy that summer feeling throughout all four seasons.

Several neighbors expressed concerns over an incident last weekend in which a group of

youths, allegedly from St. John’s Home, were attempting to steal property from people’s cars and homes on Beach 121st Street. Po lice were called Friday night, but no arrests were made. In what was believed to be retaliation, the next night, the group returned with more people and harassed neighbors on the block, allegedly threatening to beat a mother up, and break ing things on her property. The neighbors were not satisfied with how the situation was handled by the Sergeant who responded. The NCOs explained that St. John’s res idents have a curfew, and a mobile

response team from St. John’s must be the ones to pick up the residents breaking curfew.

After a busy summer, Detective Martini and Officer Mercado let the group know that a big prob lem right now is theft of cars and bicycles. They reminded people to not leave valuables in their cars or leave cars or bikes unlocked.

On Tuesday, September 13, up town neighbors came out to the Beach 126th boardwalk for a Build the Block meeting with the NYPD Sector C Neighborhood Coordina tion Officers of the 100th Precinct, to express concerns.

Next to speak was CB 14 Chair woman Orr, who shared that at a recent meeting with NYC com munity board chairs, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and various agencies, including the Department of Ed ucation, it was announced that Rockaway received two Gifted and Talented D.O.E. programs with 18 seats at P.S. 42 and P.S. 183. “I did beg for a third one. I said to them, ‘It’s been so long coming, even though there’s need all over, we’ve never had this before, and I think we deserve a third one.’ Let’s see what happens, but this is exciting news,” Orr said.

With the pandemic’s shelter-inplace orders now a memory of the not-so-distant past, on Tuesday, September 13, board members and scores of community activ ists packed the Knights of Colum bus for Community Board 14’s first session since the summer re cess. For newer board members, this was their first face-to-face meeting together after two years of convening virtually, which CB 14 Chairwoman Dolores Orr acknowledged, asking the en tire board to stand and formal ly introduce themselves. As for the night’s agenda—from good news about Rockaway’s busi ness boom, Mayor Eric Adams’ Cash For Guns Initiative, Gifted and Talented Programs coming to Rockaway, bike lanes on Mott Avenue and more, plus a lively public speaking segment—it was as packed as the room.

First up was Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, announc ing her appointment to a state legislative commission, which will evaluate the relationship between LIPA and its subsidi ary, PSE&G; analyzing how it ul timately affects energy rates for state residents. She also shared that the commission plans to ex plore more sustainable, cost-ef ficient sources of energy includ ing solar, with the goal to ease tension not just on the power grid, but residents’ bottom line. In addition, Amato announced that in October, her office will be hosting a Narcan training, in which attendees will learn how to recognize signs of an opioid overdose and administer the overdose reversal drug, Nalox one. For more information, con tact her Rockaway district office atNext718-945-9550.tospeak was CB 14 Dis trict Manager Jonathan Gas ka, sharing some glowing stats gleaned from NYS Comptroller Thomas P. Around the room at Knights, there were audible sounds of snickering and guffaws when Gaska commented, “Now, with all these new buildings go ing up in the east end with 10,000 units, you figure, conservatively, at least another 25,000 people are going to be living in Rockaway.”

This was substantially greater than all of Queens, which was 43.8%, and NYC-wide, 28.5%. Almost 82% of the businesses on the peninsula were microbusinesses, defined as having fewer than 10 employ ees. The Chief then announced May or Eric Adams’ Cash for GunsNo Questions Asked Initiative, in which his office is giving $200 pre-paid cards and iPads for sur rendered handguns and assault rifles, and $25 for rifles and shot guns. Public speaking was next with Far Rockaway businessman, Jose Santana, reading from a letter signed by fellow merchants on Beach 20th Street, expressing their displeasure and anguish about the new bike lane on Beach 20th, between Cornaga and Mott Avenue. He stated, “Far Rock away is looking more beautiful than ever, and it shows. Howev er, this bicycle lane is a public hazard and nuisance. There was

a gas rupture 200 feet away and it took a fire truck 72 minutes to get there. Elderly people and children are falling in this elevat ed bicycle lane. It is poorly con structed. Businesses are having problems loading and unloading their products. So much so, they are receiving parking tickets while they are unloading their products, as there is no rear side to get in. The difference between a life-sav ing situation could be this street as it’s a direct access point to the only hospital on the peninsula. The bicycle lane must go!”

One of the speakers, who came with his young son, stated, “I came to show support for The People’s Beach, a cultural gym for the peninsula, in which our children are free to express their genders and sexuality.” Other opinions expressed include: “I would like to see it protected. I would not like to see it convert ed to a playground as rumored, because a playground is already in the area,” and “as a trans bina ry person, this beach has been a crucial location for my commu nity. We need to have seats at the table to decide the beach’s fu ture.”CB 14 then concluded with a notice that they will be inviting the Army Corps of Engineers to address the erosion happening at Beach 149th Street, due to the rock jetty, which needs more work.

Borough Queens South, accom panied by 100th and 101st Pre cincts’ captains, introduced him self and shared their blueprint to avert crime on the peninsula.

Towards the end of the night, CB 14 voted on the motion to request the DOT remove the bi cycle lane, and instead put com mercial parking for loading and unloading only. Between 2012 and 2021, property crimes on the Peninsula declined in almost every year, while violent crimes increased in three of the 10 years. Overall, the rate of decline in major crimes was considerably higher (30.4 percent) for the area than it was for the borough as a whole (12.8 percent). New York State Comptroller, Thomas P. Some interesting tidbits include: Rockaway’s population grew by 8 percent from 2010 to 2020, the fourth-largest increase among 14 Queens neighborhoods. Growth rates were highest for the Hispanic and Asian populations. Not so great and not so surprising: the average commute time (49.7 minutes) for residents was the longest of all City neighborhoods. It’s not easy to find a person whose life has not been affected by cancer in some way. Whether it’s a friend, a family member, a loved one or themselves, it seems everyone knows someone who has battled the disease. As Rockaway does, neighbors have come up with ways to support those dealing with cancer by helping those in need. The 4th Annual Catch a Cure 5K is Sunday, September 25.

still going through their battles. As Pam Collins was an avid runner, they launched Catch a Cure with a 5K race in 2017. The Catch a Cure 5K has since become a successful annual event, raising around $20K each year. Due to Covid, the event was put on hiatus for

This year is also a special one as with the help of Keith Sullivan, Catch a Cure has officially become a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity. It is overseen by a board of Megan Rochelle, Robin Hoffman, Linda Humphrey and Jean Condon. Now with the official nonprofit status, the ladies hope to not just hold the annual Catch a Cure 5K, but they plan on coming up with other events and fundraising ideas to grow this successful movement that helps local families dealing with cancer. Among some of those ideas are a swab drive for people to see if they’re a match to be a bone marrow donor, plus there are talks of a half-marathon. But for now, Catch a Cure’s main event is the annual 5K run/walk.

On September 25, Rockaway will run and walk on behalf of Rockaway, Breezy Point and Broad Channel residents dealing with cancer, in hopes of one day finding a cure for them and those across the globe. The Catch a Cure 5K is an annual event that raises money for local residents impacted by cancer, in memory of those who have unfortunately passed away due to cancer and in honor of those who have been victorious in their battles with the disease.

“We’ve had so much support from the local businesses in Rockaway and families who have been so generous with donations,” Ro chelle said. “We do t-shirts, wa ter stations and mile markers that come with different levels for sponsorships. The day kicks off with a prayer by Father Jim Cunningham of St. Francis de Sales and the singing of the Na tional Anthem before the run.

The money raised goes directly to those in need, or even toward morale boosters for local cancer patients. “We’ve had people call us and nominate people to do nate to, so we’ll work with them to see what we can do to help them. Sometimes their friends will say they really need a spa day, so we’ll send someone to the spa, but most of the time we do monetary donations to those battling can cer,” Rochelle said.

As Rochelle mentions, each year, Humphrey gives a speech reminding people of this. “It’s a really nice day and Linda Humphrey gives a speech where she mentions how even though Rockaway, Breezy and Broad Channel are different neighbor hoods, we all come together as one for those in need and it’s a nice way to get everyone togeth er to celebrate those in remission and those who have passed away while raising funds to help those still going through cancer,” Ro chelle said.

“I thought maybe he lost it over the years, and it’s a good drill to have. I was going to purchase another one, and we’re working on Tim’s house now, since my daughter and her husband are going to move in, but it just appeared. I saw the TK on the DeWalt. One of his best friends was using it to build his house. So now it continues. Timmy’s still giving back,” Klein said.

It was a ramp build TK would’ve been proud of. On Thursday, Sep tember 8, the Fight for Firefighters Foundation (FFFF) continued the good work that late Firefighter Tim my Klein did with the organization that he helped found, in Timmy and Firefighter Steven Pollard’s name.

As he took his first ride down the newly built ramp, Bender agreed. “This is marvelous,” Bender ex claimed as he got to the bottom. “Look at how many guys showed up. They did it in two hours!” he said, clearly impressed with the work the men had done in a short time to help make his life a bit easier.

Last Thursday, the FFFF found themselves at the home of Belle Harbor resident Jack Bender. After a broken hip and related injuries left Bender in need of a wheelchair, leaving his home became a difficult task. That’s where the Fight for Fire fighters Foundation stepped in. It’s a job Timmy Klein, who was a board member for the organization and never missed a ramp build, would have been proud of. After all, Jack Bender was his former basketball coach for the Summer Classic, and Bender, a veteran, is a hero in his own right, making this job a special one.It was made even more special when the many volunteers on the project realized that among the tools they were using was a DeWalt drill with some special initials on them— TK. “I’m getting choked up because we found Timmy’s drill,” Kevin “Rusty” Roth said. “It has his initials on it. It’s his drill that he built many a ramp with us and he was at every build.”Itwas also the drill handed to Pat Klein, Timmy’s father, a retired fire fighter who has since joined the FFFF to help continue the work that his late

Since it started in 2017 by FDNY firefighters from Canarsie's Bravest Engine 257/ Ladder 170/ Battal ion 58 , the FFFF has been building ramps on homes for those in need who find themselves suddenly us ing a wheelchair. Through donations and the volunteer work of the fire fighters in the organization, they’ve been able to build ramps for many families all across New York. Among those volunteers were firefighters Steven Pollard and Rockaway res ident Timmy Klein of Ladder 170. Both died on the job, Pollard in 2019 and Klein in April of this year. Now every ramp build is done in their memory, sealed with a plaque bear ing their names.

After that job was complete and the plaque was put in place, the FFFF volunteers continued on to a job Timmy himself had worked

Though it was an old job and Frank has since passed, when Pat ti found out about the dedication plaques, she insisted the ramp have Timmy’s name on it. “I think of him every time I see it, and now I have his name on it. It’s beautiful,” she said after Pat Klein screwed the plaque to the old ramp on Thursday, mark ing the completion of the job. “This ramp wasn’t complete. We consider every ramp complete when we hon or Steve Pollard and Timmy Klein,” RothReflectingsaid.

on in October 2019. When the late Frank Mangano, a correction officer, was diagnosed with ALS, the family thought they would have to sell their Rockaway Park home. “This is the house of steps,” Frank’s wife, Patti Mangano said. But Timmy, who used to live around the block from the Manganos as a kid, insisted that they build a ramp for the family. “Timo thy was the point guy for me. He kept saying, ‘Patti, we have a ramp.’ I said ‘Where are you going to put a ramp here?' He said, ‘We’re going to make it work, don’t worry,’ and they did,” Mangano said. In October 2019, the FFFF built the ramp, giving Frank easier access to and from his home until he passed away in March 2020.

on everything her hus band went through, and on the loss of Timmy, to see his name on the now-completed ramp, was bitter sweet. “As much as everything was horrible, you think of everything that was beautiful that came along with it,” Mangano said.

And the work continues. Their next ramp build is expected to take place this weekend. To help support the work of the Fight for Firefighters Foundation, check out: FirefightersFoundation.comFightFor

Timmy's father, Pat Klein, installed the dedication plaque.

good of a carpenter as Timmy. I’m just trying to show my support for what they do, which I think is fan tastic. I don’t do too much but when I’m here, it gives me a little diversion from the every day of realizing that he’s gone. It helps me get through the day," Klein said. “Timmy was very dedicated to this. He loved do ing it, and they really do a great job. The guys are so involved and ded icated. The craftsmanship of these builds is amazing.”

Bringing a little light to a tough sit uation is what FFFF President John Vaeth says it’s all about. “It’s our way of giving back. We’re able to help first responders and vets gain access to their house. I think everybody here feels blessed that we’re firefight ers and blessed that we get to know some of the best people around, and we all like to give a little back,” Vaeth said. “And this is my way of mourn ing. We all miss Timmy and Steve. Every time we do this, it reminds me of them, and it’s just a nice thing.”

son did. At the end of last Thursday’s ramp build, a job completed within just two hours, Pat Klein was given the honor of screwing in the plaque dedicated to his son and Firefighter Steven Pollard, onto the newest ad dition to the Bender home.

For Klein, joining in on the ramp builds is a way for him to give back, and a therapeutic experience, in the wake of his son’s passing. “I’m not as

Disappearing Bus Stop Dear Editor:

Actually, matter.itwas Ciara Donley of City Council Member Joann Ario la's office who got things moving. After a short interval, the DOT sent a team to replace the bus stop sign… This must have upset the selfish vandal jerk because he dug up and disposed of the re placement sign within a couple of days of its installation!

Dear Editor:

a month ago, the bus stop sign at Beach 145th Street and Newport Avenue mysteriously disappeared. The consequence was that anyone waiting for a bus at the place that formerly had a Q35 bus stop sign risked being by passed by younger drivers unfa miliar with the fact that this was a legitimate stop.

The nearest stops were Beach 147th and Neponsit Avenue and Beach 143rd and Newport Ave nue. Disappearance of the 145th Street stop would make the dis tance between those stops greater

Twenty-one years later, 9/11 will never be forgotten. On Sunday, September 11, crowds gathered at Tribute Park on Beach 116th Street for the annual ceremony to remember the events that took place that day 21 years ago, and the many lives that were lost. A color guard and a procession of bagpipers opened the cere mony as members of the FDNY circled the central mosaic of the park. Members of the ceremo nial unit of the FDNY unfolded a flag and raised it to half-mast. Afterwards, Community Board 14 Chair Dolores Orr let people know that the ceremonial unit was missing a member this year— Firefighter Timmy Klein—who was killed on the job in April. “We miss him dearly,” she said. Father Bill Sweeney of St. Francis de Sales led a prayer. Then the names of the more than 70 members of the community who were killed on 9/11 were read aloud as a bell was

The spring season has been generally good for our real estate market. There has been action across the board in all price categories with an emphasis on the range below $1 million (approx). Prices have firmed up within the framework of recent comparable sales and in some cases are creeping higher. Inventory levels remain very low.

It can be harder to sell real estate during the summer due to vacations by buyers and sellers alike. Summer activities can also occupy people instead of allowing them to focus on the home sale process.

The summer season has mixed effects on the Rockaway real estate market. On the one hand, we are a beachfront community and the draw of the summer activities does bring people here for: beaches, swimming, cycling, running, surfing, organized teams for kids and adults (although the pandemic may crimp some of these this year; thankfully the “end” is in sight). On the other hand, some sellers are reluctant to sell during the summer because they enjoy the aforementioned activities and don’t want to give them up so fast!

The “bulls and the bears” is ter minology used by financial market participants. Often, the “bulls and/ or bears” is used to imply that some people are on the rising side of the market and other people are on the falling side of the market. A bull market is a rallying market which is what we had for a long time in real estate. A bear market is a declining market.Cramer of TV notoriety has a standard introduction: “there’s al ways a bull market somewhere….” Occasionally, people on either side of the market refuse to take profits. They stubbornly maintain their po sition and watch profits dissipate as the market rotates.

diculously low – this almost never works nowadays even though the rally in real estate prices has ceased (at least temporarily). The rally is over (for now) but the market is stable with low inventory levels. The “bears” usually end up buy ing a house which is not their first choice. They usually lose the first choice because they bid too low– or, they don’t buy anything.

So why not slow in to it? (Meaning sinking into the moment - the moment is still the moment, you are just relaxed in it.) Things will become less superficial also. Experiences could feel fuller. If we take the “rush” out of what we do, be in the moment, then, we feel better. My experience. I know I have a calm demeanor. Maybe slow. I was checking out at a kiosk in the airport, and I couldn’t understand how much the person was telling me the water was - so I asked her to repeat it. The person behind me on line, a young person, yelled it out. I turned around and thanked her. When my transaction was finished, I asked her if she thought that I was slow because I was older - that I was just curious. And she said that she was sorry and “we’re just in a rush.” Whether she just said that, and she really did think she had to help the older lady out, I will never know. But it got me thinking. addition to being severely im pacted by the COVID-19 pandem ic in 2020, Rockaway was ravaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012, and experienced extensive damage to essential infrastructure and private property. The TRIE designation and impacts of these public health and storm emergencies reflect the vul nerability of the area. The U.S. Cen sus Bureau’s Community Resilience Estimates 2019 data showed that more than one-half of Arverne and Far Rockaway residents were at me dium risk of experiencing disaster in an emergency event with more than two-fifths of Edgemere residents categorized as high risk.

Communities in the Rockaways were some of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, more than two years after the pandem ic first struck, an economic report released on Monday by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. The comptroller visited the RISE Center on Monday to discuss his findings with the community and local elect ed

“Afterofficials.the devastation of Super storm Sandy and massive efforts to rebuild, The Rockaways was battered by the pandemic. Now there’s good reason to be optimis tic about the Rockaways’ recovery from the COVID-19 setback,” Di Napoli said. “Jobs have returned, and new businesses are opening, adding strength to the local econ omy. Despite these positive steps, many Rockaways residents remain unemployed and there are stark in come disparities between commu nities on the peninsula. It’s critical that social and economic inequities that existed prior to the pandemic are addressed as part of the recov ery.”Rockaway saw steady business growth since 2000, with the num ber of businesses increasing by nearly 60% (459 firms) to reach a peak of 1,281 firms in 2021. This was substantially greater than the borough of Queens (43.8%) and citywide (28.5%) business growth. Almost 82% of the businesses on the peninsula were microbusiness es, defined as having fewer than 10 employees. As of 2021, retail trade accounted for the largest number of firms, followed by health care, leisure and hospitality and profes sional and business services.

Rockaway also had the highest share of households living below the federal poverty threshold (18.3%) among the 14 Census-defined neighborhoods in Queens in 20162020. Household poverty rates were lowest in Belle Harbor (1.3%) and highest in Far Rockaway (22%) and Edgemere (28.6%).

Population on the peninsu la increased by 8% between 2010 and 2020. This was slightly higher than population growth in Queens (7.8%) and citywide (7.7%), and was accompanied by a shift in com position, as the share of residents who identified as either Hispanic or Asian increased significantly.

The 54.5% share of Rockaways res idents aged 16 and over that were employed in the 2016-2020 period was higher than the share of those who were working in the 2006-2010 period, but still lower than the bor ough and citywide shares. Meanwhile, between 1926 and 1930, the New Lots Salt Meadow was

filled and its adjacent creeks bulkheaded. Then, in 1956 and 1961, the manmade peninsulas became Pennsylvania Avenue Landfill and Fountain Avenue Landfill, respectively.In1974, the City of New York deeded the property to the National Park Service to incorporate into Gateway. However, the City retained the right to continue landfill operations until they reached capacity. The Pennsylvania Avenue Landfill closed in 1980 and the Fountain Avenue Landfills followed in 1985. From 1991 through 2002 the New York City Department of Environmental Protection rehabilitated and cleaned the property. In 2004, after the waste was capped, the first seeds were sewn to create new parkland. In 2018, Governor Cuomo announced plans for a New York State Park atop the former landfills. On July 2nd following year Shirley Chisholm State Park opened to the public further cementing her legacy within Brooklyn.

Creek is known as Old Mill Creek in recognition of that heritage, while Second Creek was renamed Hendrix Creek, possibly to honor Representative Joseph C. Hendrix, and the Fresh Creek name remains as a likely reference to a critical source of freshwater for the colonial settlements.In1924, 72 years after the establishment of New Lots, Shirley Chisholm was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Chisholm championed issues of early education and child welfare in the local political arena. Then, from 1965 to 1968, Chisholm served in the New York State Assembly. After which, in 1969, she became the first Black woman elected to Congress. In the House of Representatives, she sat on the Agriculture Committee and created the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

Shirley Chisholm State Park represents a collaborative endeavor between city, state, and federal agencies. The former saltmarsh turned landfill turned park, with its once meandering creeks, has passed through various administrative hands and its many name changes reflect that history.

A 1797 map reveals a landscape referred to plainly as Salt Meadow at the southern reaches of New Lots. The same map identifies three creeks as Fresh Creek, Second Creek, and Third Creek from west to east. Each of these freshwater creeks flow into Jamaica Bay to create the estuary’s brackish water. Being affected by the tides, the tributaries of Fresh Creek and Third Creek supplied the energy for tide mills along the water’s edges. Today, Third

These park features lie within the ancestral lands of the Canarsie Tribe, who refer to the area as Keskateuw. Colonial occupation of the region by the Dutch began in 1636 when New Amersfoort was established. In 1664, the town was renamed Flatlands when the British empire captured New Netherland. The name remained through the American Revolution, and on February 12, 1852, the community of New Lots was established out of the eastern periphery of Flatlands. The New Lots name served the rather straight-forward purpose of

Dry eye disease is caused by de creased tear production, exces sive evaporation of tears, or both. It leads to inflammation of the surface of the eye. This inflamma tion typically results in a gritty or burning sensation and blurred vi sion. Dry eye disease affects about 5% of the U.S. population and is more common in women and in dividuals older than 50 years. Patients with moderate to severe symptoms should be referred to an ophthalmologist, as should those who fail to im prove on initial therapy. Ophthal mologists may prescribe anti-in flammatory medications such as steroids or cyclosporine, autol ogous serum eye drops (made from components of the patient’s blood), or platelet-rich plasma. Another form of treatment may involve the use of scleral contact lenses. These have a built-in res ervoir for tears or ophthalmologic medication. As Summer draws to a close and school begins, the soccer season is back, to help ease the transition. Players, coaches and parents arrived at their opening games, in fullforce this past weekend, and while not all of the game outcomes were victories, the teamwork, camaraderie, sportsmanship and competition on display, certainly were.

The 5th grade boys were under the lights on Friday night, also against Blessed Trinity, in a game that pitted the last two Diocesan champs against each other. SFDS came away victorious, by a score of 2-1, in a hard-fought game. Goals were scored by T.J. Gampero and Timmy Stines. The defense was led by Kevin Papadopoulos,
