Goldfeder Going National About NFIP In an effort to build support for reforming the oft-maligned National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), Assemblyman Philip Goldfeder wrote letters to five congressional representatives from Mississippi and Louisiana. The assemblyman’s letter comes on the heels of the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged many cities, including New Orleans, in those two states. “Families in southern Queens and Rockaway were utterly devastated during Sandy,” Assemblyman Goldfeder said in a press release. “But, the crushing bureaucracy and harmful policies of FEMA and the NFIP made us victims two times over. “Sadly, few understand this as well as Katrina devastated communities in Louisiana and Mississippi.” In his letter to the representatives, Goldfeder highlighted his plans to create the New York Flood Insurance Association, which would create an alternative way for homeowners to get flood insurance instead of using the NFIP. The NFIP is cur-
rently $24 billion in debt, and many Rockaway residents have expressed their disappointment in the implementation of the program post-Hurricane Sandy. In his letter, the assemblyman also expressed support for Representative Greg Meeks’ call to waive FEMA’s recoupment policy, which he stated was based on similar legislation passed in the wake of Katrina. Goldfeder concluded his letter by requesting to meet with each of the five congressmen in Washington.
Transit Advocates Rally for Better Queens Commute On Sunday, September 13, members of the Queens Public Transit committee held a rally at the corner of Hoffman Drive and Woodhaven Boulevard, next to one of the biggest bus hubs in the borough. “We’re sick and tired of City Hall and our leaders who think they can solve our transportation crisis by eliminating railways, roadways, bus stops, left turns, parking, bus frequency, and reasonable speed limits. This is madness and it’s unfair and it must stop,” Philip
A. McManus, a transit advocate and one of the organizers of the rally, said. Among the issues they advocated for included the establishment of QueensRail, a borough-wide subway stretching from central Queens to Rockaway; a stop the reduction of traffic lanes in Queens; the problems with Select Bus Service along Cross Bay Boulevard and Woodhaven Boulevard; and city-wide ferry expansion, including the Rockaway Ferry.

Medical Facility Moving Along By Katie McFadden
Plans are moving along nicely for the expected medical facility coming to the old Key Food location near Beach 105th Street. “Everything is moving along very well, Dr. Mark Gelwan, a Belle Harbor ophthalmologist who initiated the project, said. Back in June, Dr. Gelwan and a team of several other local doctors met with Community Board 14 and introduced their plan to bring a new, state-of-the-art medical facility to the peninsula. You may not have seen action take place at the old Key Food location as of yet, but you will this fall. Demolition is expected to take place in November and construction will start a month after, in the hopes of completing the project by the end of next year or January 2017, at the latest. Originally, demolition was supposed to take place in October, with construction beginning in November, but something that is consistently late or troublesome has pushed the project back slightly. “The A train, Dr. Gelwan

it will probably wind up still being a courthouse, Dr. Gelwan said. After this plan fell through, Dr. Gelwan’s group teamed up with Community Healthcare Associates (CHA), a healthcare developer with four complexes in New Jersey, to create this new medical mall from the ground up at the Key Food site. The facility will be an ambulatory surgery center (ASC), which is a modern healthcare facility that focuses on providing same-day surgical care, including diagnostic and preventive procedures. With about 10 interested partners, the facility will offer a wide expanse of medical services. “We have interest from two physical therapy practices, a podiatrist, a nurse practitioner, a women’s health center, cosmetic procedures, a treatment center, a rheumatologist, a gastroenterologist and even oncologists. There’s no one treating cancer on the peninsula, but now there will be in our facility. We’ll be like a one-stop shop for everything, Dr. Gelwan said. Besides incorporating local

The MTA wants to make sure we don’t damage anything during construction, so we’re still waiting on city permits. The project was originally supposed to take over the old courthouse on Beach Channel Drive, but that plan fell through at the end of last year due to zoning and contractual issues. “By the end of the year, the owner has to return the property to the city. physicians, the facility will incorporate other local businesses. “We’re going to have a food court in there and some of the restaurants from Beach 129th Street are interested in helping with that. We also have Belle Harbor Chemists, who’s going to put a pharmacy in the facility. When patients go there, they can get their services, all their medications and have something to eat. I think it will work very well for the patients, Dr. Gelwan said. Continued on page 8

In what will likely come as a great relief to many homeowners still dealing with the after effects of Hurricane Sandy, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that it will waive a rule requiring those receiving duplicate funds to pay them back. HUD informed state and local leaders in the Sandy-impacted regions that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative. “HUD’s decision to waive the ‘duplication of benefits’ policy for so many Superstorm Sandy victims—and the promise that even more could be free of a claw-back—represents a sensible resolution, but more importantly, the right thing to do, Senator Chuck Schumer, who had been advocating for HUD to waive the requirement, said. In addition to the waiver order,
Inspired by their success in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, Rockaway’s own Mermaid Brigade as organized the First Annual Poseidon’s Parade! The parade will run from Beach 106th St. to the Beach 95th St. plaza this Saturday, September 19, starting at 11 a.m. Those interested in taking part can march solo, as part of a float, or on a bike. Online registration is highly encouraged, and it will cost $5 for individuals and $10 per float. As an added bonus, prizes will be awarded in numerous categories, including Best Pet, Best Float, Best Bicycle, and Best Recycled Materials. After the parade concludes its route, a celebration is planned in the “Under the Sea Lounge, featuring a DJ, face painting, hula hooping, the Parks Department mobile playground, crafts and other activities. To register online, go to http://poseidonsparade.brownpapertickets.com/.
FEMA announced that it will extend the claims review process by 30 days after previously having been expected to end the process on September 15. This will allow hundreds of more homeowners who are eligible to have their claims reviewed sign up for the claims process without the fear that funds provided by FEMA will retroactively be clawed-back by New York Rising or Build It Back as a duplication of benefits. “These families have suffered enough and shouldn’t be further victimized through no fault of their own, Harriet Tregoning, HUD’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development, said. “We have a larger responsibility to facilitate recovery, not to hinder it just because these families didn’t receive sufficient flood insurance payments.

Just When You’re Getting Used To It I kinda feel like Arthur from the movie by the same name. He’s a drunken millionaire who… okay, pause. I feel like Arthur without the millions. I have nothing in common with him except for those times when I get too celebratory. Anyway, in one scene, he gets nostalgic with his butler, the older man who essentially raised him. Remember we used to play hide and seek? I would hide and you never found me, Arthur says. The butler replies, dryly, I never looked. So, I hid this column from The Rockaway Times for weeks and
you never looked. I get it, I get it. You’re a bunch of smart aleck butlers is what you all are. You might not have noticed but it’s been a while. I feel like I should be writing a How I Spent My Summer Vacation essay, which teachers used to force us to do when we returned to school in September. Teachers didn’t care what we did on our vacations. They just had to occupy us while they tried to come to grips that the summer was over. A lot of people who retire get bored after a few months and soon start to look for some kind of work.
Teachers have fake retirements. Every summer they feel like they’re retired but never quite get bored enough that they start itching to do something, like real retirees. And just when they’re settling in, around August 15th, they realize they’re not retired. They’ve got to go back. It’s easy to spot a teacher in later summer. They’re like the Walking Dead. They can’t hide the dread. By the third week of August they’re looking for calendars to find out when the Jewish holidays are. They perk up a little when they realize there are a couple of Muslim holidays this year, too. They’ll need those days off in September. No way can they do full weeks right away. Some go further and check Columbus Day and then count how many weeks until Thanksgiving. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course teachers generally love their jobs (and their precious students) but the pain on their faces as August turns into September is as predictable as any tide. Summer goes too fast for everybody but teachers and school secretaries are like death row inmates hoping for a call from the governor to commute the sentence (or extend the summer). And they get no sympathy. But I’m giving it. I was just getting used to this column vacation thing and now I gotta get started again. It’s
rough. And like teachers, I can’t go every week just yet. I’ve penciled in a couple of Scientology and Rastafarian holidays on my calendar. With marijuana sure to be legal in the near future, Rasta holidays are coming. All of September could go up in smoke. I’m just getting ahead of the curve and declaring these holidays now. Not sure when exactly they’ll occur but I’ll skip the column and will demand Alternate Side of the Street rules – and reality -- be suspended. So how did I spend my summer vacation? Oh, that’s for another column. I was just trying to keep you occupied until I came to grips with being back. And for you wiseacres who wish I’d stay on vacation, at least we’ve got something in common.

Proudly serving our community for over 25 years.
By Katie McFadden As we pass the halfway to St. Paddy’s Day mark, now seems like a good time shine light on a “perfect Irish Catholic gentleman.” The Queens County Ancient Order of Hibernians will be celebrating its 140th anniversary this year and at the annual dinner/dance on October 17, they’ll be honoring a man who exemplifies the AOH motto of “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity.” He also serves up perfect pints of Guinness at Rockaway’s oldest bar. Hibernian of the Year is none other than Brendan Jones. When approached by Queens County AOH President, John Manning, about the honor, the humble Rogers bartender tried to turn down the offer. “I like to keep to the background. I’m not used to being up front, “Jones said. “I told John, ‘You can give it to someone else.’ He said ‘You deserve it’ and I said, ‘Maybe someone else deserves it more than I do.” “When I recommended Brendan Jones to the dinner committee, I couldn’t get the words out fast enough before it was approved. But Brendan shot me down right away. He said, ‘Why me?’ I said, ‘Why not?” He couldn’t answer me,” Manning said. “Brendan Jones is everything the Hibernians are about; Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity. Tell me where in that equation Brendan Jones is not? Everything we do, we have to put a little elbow grease into it. If we want to be successful, we have to put 110 percent into it. Brendan Jones does better. He comes with 120 percent.” If the brogue didn’t tip you off, Jones’ background story is that of a true Irishman. Jones was living in
County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland until he came to the States in 1970. “I come from a family of 14; nine brothers and four sisters. My father died at 42 and my mother raised us all by herself,” Jones said. When troubles arose in the north with the Irish Republican Army in the late 1960s, Jones’ mother wanted what was best for her kids. “My mother wanted some of the boys to leave because we got involved in the troubles of the time and she didn’t want anything to happen to us,” Jones said. One of his sisters, who was already living in the United States, suggested he come back with her. “I filled out the forms for a passport and got one in 10 days. I also sent away for a working visa, but that took forever. I thought I’d take a shot anyway. I had to be careful where I got a job because if the contractors got caught hiring illegals, they’d face a huge fine, so I got jobs under the table,” Jones said. Having family in the country was a big help. When he first came to the States at age 19, Jones was living in Jackson Heights for about a month, until his aunt, who lived on Beach 117th Street in Rockaway, suggested he come live there and work for her. “I thought ‘This was great, I’m getting a job already,’” Jones recalled. It was a job, but not the most glorious work. “She had me painting a wire fence with a glove, raking leaves and painting around the house, and I started doing the same work with a next door neighbor.” It wasn’t long before Jones started his true calling. “Paddy Curran was a good friend of my aunt. We were at church one Saturday evening and my aunt starts talking to him about her nephew that came out from IreContinued on page 11

Corona Park was reportedly home to an alligator. According to DnaInfo’s Katie Honan, divers from the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit had been trying to nab the out-of-place reptile. On Wednesday, a local fisherman hauled in the sea monster. Nicknamed “Jaws,” the toothy creature came in somewhere between 18-24 inches. ***** Didn’t you love Whalemina? Want Whalemina to live again? Originally set for September 15th, FEMA agreed on Tuesday to give Hurricane Sandy homeowners an extra 30 days to ask the government to review their damage claims. ***** Police Commissioner Bratton recently touted this summer as being the “safest” in New York City in 25 years. Technically, he might be right, but parts of Rockaway are hardly safer these days. Last weekend a 15-year-old girl was shot and killed in Far Rockaway. That horrible event followed the killing of 16-year-old Neshawn Plummer just several days earlier. Shootings and shots fired are up in both precincts. ***** We’re always asking you to mark your calendar and here’s another good reason to do so: Sunday, October 4th is the Second Annual Beach 116th Street Fall Festival. There will be live music, a beer garden, vendors, artists and fun for all. We like bikes. We love bikes. See our logo? See our bike on the roof of our building? But we don’t like the idea of bikes only on the Rockaway Freeway (the road under the elevated tracks). As it is now, with parts of the Rockaway Freeway closed, driving east/ west is a maddening experience. If the entire Freeway is closed for bikes or any other idea it will make east/ west travel impossible. Emergency vehicles will face clogged roads and businesses will suffer (why bother going to a store if it’s going to be such a hassle). Keep the Freeway free. ***** The Graybeards are holding their annual blood drive at St. Francis de Sales on Sunday, October 4th. People in good health from 16-75 are encouraged to give. ***** Don’t forget. Poseidon’s Parade is Saturday. There’s still time to be part of the parade (you can register as an individual or group). And there’s certainly time to plan on being part of the crowd who will cheer on the nautical paraders. The Poseidon’s Parade is a family-friendly art parade that encourages creativity and artistic expression organized by The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, the locally-run float that has represented the peninsula at the annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island. After winning best motorized float two years in a row – and having a blast for many, many other years – they decided, with support from Community Board 14 and the Parks Department, to bring a parade across the bay. ***** The Richie Allen Surf Classic was held last Sunday in memory of Richie, a young firefighter (and avid surfer) killed on 9/11. Medical Facility Moving Along Continued from page 3
“Rockaway will go from having the worst healthcare to the best because the doctors that are part owners of the facility, and are well trained, will have an incentive to be here. It’s going to be pretty much all-private ownership. Our goal is to make the patients happy and provide quality care so more and more patients use the facility.” The project was originally working with North Shore-LIJ, which was going to be the transfer hospital for the facility, but a better opportunity has come along. “We tried to work with North Shore. There are hospitals that are interested in serving the community and then hospitals that are interested in the communities serving them. North Shore is the latter,” Dr. Gelwan said. “They just wanted to buy a share in our center and not provide doctors and services, even though they promised these things. We’re not working with them anymore.” Instead, the facility will be connected to South Nassau Communities Hospital.
“South Nassau has made a sig- ry care group of eight doctors and nificant clinical commitment to also the largest orthopedic group our complex and the community in Long Island. He says every space of the large facility will be dedicated to care. “This will be like the dream or idealistic hospital that you’d want. In this facility, every space will be used for patient care. There will be actual care taking place in all 51,000 square feet of space. All insurances will be accepted. It’s an elevated building and parking won’t be a problem,” Dr. Gelwan said. While the medical facility is expected to provide many muchneeded medical services on the peninsula, which only has one hospital, Dr. Gelwan says the goal isn’t to put St. John’s Episcopal Hospital out of business. “Our goal is to provide high quality services. Some may overlap with what St. John’s offers to some extent, but people aren’t flocking to St. John’s. They’re mostly taking care of people directly around the area of the hospital, so this won’t have any real effect on them. St. John’s will remain open because the state will keep them open.”

The Lazer Speaks
Rockaway Wineries, Wine Not? By Lou Pastina
Only 40 years ago, in the early 1970s, someone decided that they would take the potato farms of Long Island’s North Fork and try and grow grapes good enough for making wine. They were probably laughed at when they first tried this experiment. The land on the North Fork is between two large bays, the Peconic and the Long Island Sound. The ground is sand based, and the distance between the saltwater bays is not all that far. Not exactly Napa Valley, but whoever started the first one probably thought it was close enough. They probably thought the “terroir,” as the environmental factors that affect a crop’s epigenetic qualities are known, was pretty good, and different enough to produce some interesting wines. Forty years and about 30 wineries later, it seems that they were right. Wineries have popped up all over the North Fork and New York State. The Finger Lakes Region has been popular for years; the Shawangunk Wine Trail in the Hudson Valley is well known too. According to some wine magazines, there are about 400 wineries in New York
State alone with five major grape growing regions that attract almost six million visitors a year, contributing to an economic impact of over $5 billion to New York State. Those are big numbers! City Winery in Manhattan added music to their menu and has franchised to multiple US cities. Brooklyn has its own Brooklyn Oenology in Williamsburg. Oenology is the science and study of wine making and oenophiles are people who consider themselves wine connoisseurs. There are a few places in Queens that cater to those folks. But there are no wineries in Rockaway, and why not? Rockaway’s eastern end has blocks and blocks of empty lots, which are housed between the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay, the soil is sand based, and the terroir is probably pretty interesting. It seems good enough for organic farms to spring up, how about a winery or two? Why travel to the North Fork or Finger Lakes when our own little winery row could be literally blocks away? Rockaway does have two wine bars, Sayra’s and The Rock NYC, both on Rockaway Beach Boulevard on Rockaway’s Restau-
rant Row. How cool would it be if they were selling Rockaway’s own wines? What would the economic impact to Rockaway be? Perhaps boutique hotels would pop up too, or bed and breakfast places? It would be another place for the Rockaway local bands to play too, think of the natural tie in for the local band Wine with Sue! Certainly it would attract oenophiles from the five boroughs! Beyond the capital investment and the specific knowledge to actually grow wine, what would be the biggest challenge facing a
Rockaway Winery? Well, its actually a big one, and I got a sense of it years ago when I joined a bunch of Rockawayites for a trip to the North Fork for a weekend of wine. I was puzzled to find that my friends, despite being excited to be at the wineries, brought in coolers of Coors Light. It seems that Rockaway prefers beer to wine! I guess that was an obvious one. Oh well, but in forty years if the Rockaways are the new Wine Trail, know that you read it here first! Why not?! It could happen!

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon
Broad Channel Musings If there were no schools to take children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with parents! With that in mind, if you listened carefully last week you would have thought that Christmas had come early as children all over town headed out the front door, back to school and our community of Broad Channel resonated with happy refrains of “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” As a parent I have always tried to impress on my two girls the importance of a good education and the need to study hard. After all, I know for a fact that if my friend who sat next to me throughout my eight years in grammar school
had studied harder, my grades would not have always indicated my schoolwork as drowning below “C” level! Summon your inner wolf later this month on Sunday evening, September 27 and make your way outside around 8 p.m., look skywards, and then prepare to howl! For the first time in more than 30 years, our town will have a front row seat to a rare supermoon lunar eclipse combo. The last time we got to experience such a phenomenon was in 1982 and the one that will appear later this month will be clearly visible from our area in Broad Channel providing it is not a cloudy night. The upcoming supermoon lunar eclipse will start right
around the time of that evening’s 8:30 p.m. high tide. If you miss this rare celestial treat, you won’t get another chance until 2033! The Dougherty family of Broad Channel has inadvertently brought new meaning to the phrase “keeping it in the family.” Jeannine Dougherty (nee Corbett) recently sustained a broken leg while her son, Kevin, managed to break his arm. Not to be outdone, the young Sarah Dougherty also suffered an injury to her ankle. Word has it that DOT is planning on installing several “SLOW - Dougherty Crossing” signs along Cross Bay Boulevard! All kidding aside, our sincere wishes for the speediest of recoveries go out to all of the afflicted members of the Dougherty clan! Ever wonder where the term “flea market” comes from? The name originated with the legendary marches aux puces, or flea markets of Paris. Legend has it that back in 1880, at the largest, and most famous market, St.Ouen, just outside the city’s ring road at Porte de Clignancourt, an unknown bargain hunter observed junk dealers selling scrap metal, rags and old furniture and remarked, “My word, but it’s a market of fleas!” Well flea markets have come a long way in the past 135 years and today they can actually be great fun, an ultimate treasure hunt if you will, as long as you remain open to the fact that you never know what you may find hidden among all the items for sale. So, if you are in the mood for
The Rockaway Times some treasure hunting head on up to the Broad Channel VFW on Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and scour the tables filled with all manner of wonderful and eclectic items you never knew you needed! If you are looking for antiques, they can always be found seated at the bar in the hall’s canteen, including myself! You could not have asked for more perfect weather earlier this month when, led by an Honor Guard from Broad Channel’s American Legion Post 1404, our town’s annual Labor Day Mardi Gras parade strutted its stuff along Cross Bay Boulevard to the wonderment of all the spectators who lined the streets. The floats were nothing short of incredible this year, attesting to the fact that the residents of our community are nothing short of creative geniuses. As always the rear of the Parade received the biggest applause along the route of march, consisting of the men and women of our terrific Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department. Anyone attending this year’s parade had to come away from the event thinking to themselves… Broad Channel – Why would anyone want to live anywhere else? land. Paddy comes up to me after church and says, ‘Is this the nephew?’ ‘Am I getting a wee job?’ I asked. ‘Come in tomorrow,’ he said. He put me to work right away and I started bartending at Curran’s in November 1970,” Jones recalled. Jones has been a bartender for 45 years and has done a bit of bar hopping through his career. He spent some time working at Duffy’s Bar, where he met his wife, Carol. “I worked at Frank Duffy’s Bar and Grill for 10 years. Carol came in one night, looking for her brother. I started talking to her and well, we’ll leave it at that,” Jones said. They got married in 1984 and have two sons, Brendan and Colm. Jones spent some time bartending in Manhattan before taking a shot at owning his own bar in Maryland. “I was there for a short time. I wanted to take a chance after leaving Duffy’s. I had two brothers down in Maryland, so I bought a business down there. It was a learning experience. When you’re a bartender, at least when you finish at 3 or 4 a.m., you have no more headaches. As an owner, it’s 24/7,” he said. Jones returned to New York and worked at the Palm Gardens for a while, until another opportunity came along. “A friend of mine, Pete Cholakis, was working at Rogers. He got a job at Beach Channel High School and asked if I was interested in replacing him,” Jones recalled. “I met up with Richie Rogers and the Ram’s Horn Diner parking lot and we got to talking. I started working at Rogers on January 1, 1990.” And he’s been there ever since. Many have gotten to know the familiar face of Brendan Jones at Rogers throughout his 25+ years there. He works the busiest shift, Wednesday through Saturdays, starting at 5
p.m. and has become a staple of the old tavern. Jones thinks his likeability comes from simply treating customers right. “I’m no better than anybody else. I don’t want people thinking that I think highly of myself. You just gotta be nice to people and I treat them the way I like to be treated,” he said. This becomes a slight conflict when it comes to ending the night early for someone who had a little too much, but Jones tries to handle those situations courteously. “The hardest part of bartending is throwing someone out the door, which I don’t do often. I’d rather talk to them, get them to calm down and tell them to come back another day.” Jones is at a point in his career where he’s considering winding down, but Rockaway won’t let him quite yet. “When I found out Rogers had been sold to Mike McMahon, I told him, ‘Either this year, or next year, my intentions are calling it quits.’ Twice, Mike said, ‘What did you say?’ He said ‘You’re going no place.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ ‘You’re not allowed to retire,’ that’s what they tell me,” Jones said. “I want to thank the Rogers family for the good 26 years and I wish good luck to the McMahon brothers,” Jones added. “Who knows what the next year will bring,” he said, but for now, “I’m still at Rogers.” When he’s not bartending, Jones actively participates in AOH activities with Rockaway’s Division 21. He joined in the late 1970’s and particularly enjoys the charitable aspects. “I like the fundraisers and I’m big on helping people, especially with the St. Camillus Special Olympics” he said. Jones goes to church at St. Francis de Sales every week. “I can’t miss mass on Sunday. I wouldn’t know what day of the week it was,” he said. Continued on page 18

Learning Team Building and Leadership Skills through Kayaking By Rick Horan
The Gateway Bike & Boathouse (GB&B), a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, operates out of a small boathouse in Riis Landing through the cooperation of the National Park Service. We work with individuals and groups seeking to experience Jamaica Bay with a human powered watercraft such as kayaks and rowing shells. Funded by discretionary funding by Councilman Ulrich and community grants from the Williams Company, the GB&B is able to provide programming at no charge to users. Trips must be arranged in advance and include training, a personal floatation device and at least one escort. Recently the GB&B had the pleasure of playing host to more than 90 Boy Scouts and their families. You didn’t have to ask if they were having fun on the water, their smiles told the story. After all, what’s not to like about enjoying some fresh air and exercise while learning a new sport and discovering the beauty of Rockaway and Jamaica Bay? Also this summer, Carl Quigley, Aquatics Director at St. Francis
College, has been taking groups of students out on the water to work on team building and leadership skills. On one of these trips Carl invited Dr. Kathleen Nolan and three of her student assistants at the SFC Summer Science Academy for High School Students to experience kayaking on Jamaica Bay. According to Dr. Nolan, this trip was essentially a “feasibility study” to explore the possibility of hosting future trips with larger groups of college, high school and middle school students or their teachers. Dr. Nolan reported that the weather was perfect and the currents cooperated. “All an all” it was a successful shakedown cruise for the teachers and students alike. The consensus was that it would be very doable for future sojourns. The Gateway Bike & Boathouse has 14 double sit-on-top kayaks in the Riis Landing location and hopes to have a second location next year at the new city park to be built on Beach 88th St. If anyone would like to get involved in a leadership or support role in helping to this organization to expand, please send an e-mail to RickHoran@GatewayBoathouse.org.

Bike Ride Adventures: 5th Annual Bike Parade
Includes traditional breakfast and lunch items as well as a dessert table and a complementary cocktail (either a screwdriver, mimosa, or bloody mary)

By Katie McFadden & ContributorJeanne Dupont
What better way to have a bike adventure than participating in a parade that celebrates bicycles? I did just that on Saturday, September 12 as a participant in Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s 5th Annual Rockaway Bike Parade! The rainy weather forecast may have scared off some of the viewers and maybe even a few parading cyclists, but I wasn’t going to miss my first time participating in the annual event! I almost did though. My trusty cellphone alarm never went off on Saturday morning, and I woke up just 20 minutes before the parade. I reached out to my parade buddy, Kirsten, explaining the delay, but assured her I could get ready in time. This was a lofty goal considering I still had pajamas on and a three-and-a-
+ENNEDYS s "REEZY 0OINT s half mile ride ahead of me just to get to the starting line. I fired up the Keurig and made a cup of coffee to take sips of in between Continued on page 16

Bike Ride Adventures: 5th Annual Bike Parade Continued from page 15
getting ready, so that I could feel human before my fun adventure parade. Several weeks before the event, Kirsten suggested we go with a Christmas theme for the parade in which participants were told to dress up as their favorite Rockaway site or subject. Thinking of how this could tie in to Rockaway, I thought of the Little North Pole, the annual Christmas light extravaganza in Neponsit during the holidays. While the Little North Pole has just about every decoration you could think of, some that truly stick out to me are the giant toy soldiers that stand outside the Mure’s home each season. So, with the help of Amazon, I bought the costume and dressed like one. Bright red top, crisp white pants with suspenders and a shiny black hat to go with it; I was a Babe in Toyland or perhaps a Rockette from the Christmas Spectacular, or maybe just a short, semi-conscious writer in polyester. As I finished my coffee, I had my mom zip up the one-piece costume, I grabbed the battery-operated Christmas lights that I bought to decorate my bike with, and I hopped on my ride and pedaled my little legs off. I knew I would get some looks as a toy soldier went riding through Rockaway Park and Arverne, and I was hoping I wouldn’t run into anyone I knew, but this is Rockaway‌who am I kidding? I got a compliment from a good friend, a salute from a stranger and lots of smiles and confused looks from others as I tried to ride while simultaneously wrapping my handlebars in multicolor Christmas lights. Don’t try that one at home, kids. When I ran into a group of colorful balloon-toting cyclists heading in the opposite direction under the Rockaway Freeway at about 61st Street, I knew I was in the right place, and also very late. I greeted Kirsten, who looked adorable and sweltering (although she swears she was fine) in her fleece Christmas pajamas, with her dog, Kody, donned in his Christmas best in her basket and I tried my best to casually jump in with the troupe of bicyclists, tricyclists and pedicabbies carrying people wearing special t-shirts for the occasion and others wearing homemade costumes. I had expected more riders to be wearing costumes, but many of the riders put more effort into decorating their bikes than their bodies and some just seemed to join in for the ride as themselves. With a police-escorted route, the group of about 40 or 50 riders caused a minor traffic disruption as we crossed Rockaway Beach Boulevard on Beach 67th Street to head toward Shore Front Parkway. It was at this moment
that the batteries from the lights that I hadn’t fully wrapped around my bike fell out into the middle of the street, causing this soldier to abandon her vehicle and go on a quick rescue mission, but after that it was smooth cruising on my first bike parade. At Beach 86th Street, our group met on the boardwalk and we paraded at a relaxed pace along the brand new promenade. Once we reached Beach 97th Street, we encountered another fun event that was taking place that day: the Honey Fest. We each dismounted our bikes and walked them through the crowd of busy bees and beachgoers, and hopped back on once we made it through. Our parade continued on to Beach 106th Street, where we got off of our bikes and then parked them. Each bike parade participant was given a ticket for a chicken empanada at Caracas. We took a few minutes to relax and refuel before those wearing costumes were asked to stand in front of the crowd, while judges deliberated on who deserved the “Best of Rockaway award. Judges included Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer, Executive Director of the Queens Council for the Arts; Helen Ho, Mayors Office of Rebuilding and Resiliency; and Jessica Luina, Community Liaison for Councilman Donovan Richards. The judges deliberated for several minutes before announcing the winners, who all put much more effort into their costumes than ordering one online. Third place went to Sommyr Pochan, or “Jellyfish Lady, for her homemade costume that featured an umbrella with colorful streamers, or tentacles, coming from it. Young Bailey Boden took home second place for her “Ocean Express Butterfly costume. Taking the top prize was Ana Fisyak, who dressed like a wave. All of the winners received artistic trophies created from recycled materials by artist Judy Richardson. I may not have won, but I’m sure I’ll find an occasion to wear my costume again. After all, Rockaway loves themed events. And my Christmas lights are never coming off my bike, because they’re amazing. Congratulations to all the winners and to the RWA for putting on such a fun event. I hope many more come out for next year’s bike parade and that it continues to grow! In the meantime, RWA is hosting several more events almost every weekend through November, such as community beach cleanups, dune plantings, and a daffodil giveaway. Their next activity is the International Coastal Clean Up on Sunday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. For all RWA events and more information, check out www.rwalliance.org.

History Slip Dear Editor: While reading the “This Week In History” column, I was wondering why there was no mention of a highly significant event that affected the Rockaways and Broad Channel 55 years ago. Before Hurricanes Sandy, Irene, and Gloria came in their unwelcome visits, we had another visit. As an impressionable six-yearold, I recall the events of Monday, September 12, 1960 quite well. In addition to being the first day of school for those in the public school system, that was the day when Hurricane Donna struck, flooding our streets and basements, warping the gym floor in PS 114, and remembered by most of us in the New York coastal regions, as “the day the Bay and Ocean met”. As many of my classmates, as well as classmates of my older siblings, who, unlike us, were not able to be picked up by their parents, were trapped by floodwaters in
Page 17

PS 114, JHS 180, and other public schools until well after nightfall, braving the ebbing tide and power blackout in Belle Harbor/Neponsit to finally return to their homes, I think that it was significant enough to have been included in the “Week In History” column. Richard C. Berger
Some “Manor” Dear Editor, I was looking at James Supple’s “Then and Now” pictures on the cover of The Rockaway Times and noticed that St. Andrew’s Episcopalian Church used to be where the current Belle Harbor Manor is now located. I couldn’t help but think about how nice it would be to have something other then the “Manor” (and I use this term loosely) located on this property. I’m sure there are residents in the “Manor” that are truly in need of assistance, however I see many residents roaming Rockaway Beach BLVD looking dazed and confused like they could either collapse from exhaus-
tion or go berserk at any moment. I saw one resident wearing a leather jacket and a pair of pants last week when it was 90+ degrees outside. Who is responsible for these people? How are they allowed to roam the streets aimlessly like this? The Belle Harbor Manor is NOT good for the residents that live near by and something needs to be done. Who is accountable for these people in need of obvious help? JPM
Event Coordination Needed Dear Editor: It was great to see two events happening last weekend, the Honey Fest and The Rockaway Bike Parade but somebody needs to do better coordinating with these things. The Honey Fest was set up on the boardwalk with tents and vendors and the public milling about. It was very nice. But then a bike parade suddenly appeared. The bike parade looks like a fun event but it seems they could have used the ramps to bypass the Honey Fest instead of going right through the middle! Both these events had Parks Department permission I bet so somebody at Parks should have been aware that bikes and bees don’t mix.
Love all the events in Rockaway but a little better planning is needed. S. McClear
Thanks From PTA Dear Editor: The Channel View School for Research PTA wishes to publicly thank all those who helped us to secure a crossing guard on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 101st Street. We are especially grateful to Captain Craig Adelman, Commanding Officer of the 100 Precinct, who cut through the red tape and assigned a temporary guard so quickly. Thanks also to Councilman Eric Ulrich and his aid Robby Schwach, Queens Borough President liaison Dan Brown, 100 Precinct Community Council President Danny Ruscillo, and the Rockaway Beach Civic Association for their assistance and continued support as we endeavor to make this position permanent. A very special thanks goes to the CVSR faculty, especially Channel View Assistant Principal Joe Featherston and Parent Coordinator DeShawn Mason, who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure student safety on this busy road for many years. Brendan Jones: Hibernian of the Year Continued from page 11
He’s a big sports fan and watches every type you can think of and sometimes heads to Gaelic Park to check out the Gaelic football games. He also loves music, especially country (his favorite is Charlie Pride) and of course, Irish tunes. “I like Paddy Reilly, the Wolfetones and there was this band back in Ireland called Big Tom that I love, Jones said. “He’s a Big Tom groupie, Manning joked. With his wife working in the airline industry, Jones also travels often. He’s been all over the world, and back to Ireland “probably a hundred times, HOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!
he said. There’s one thing that the bartender doesn’t do: drink. Brendan Jones is a pioneer. At age 11, before making confirmation in Ireland, the bishop asked Jones to take a pledge and he promised not to drink alcohol. “I never broke it, Jones said. How does he stick to his pledge, while working at a bar? “A lot of patience, he said. Jones had a taste of alcohol once, but not intentionally. “One time I served a woman a shot of scotch and she threw it in my face. I spit it out right away and said, ‘This is not for me.’ On October 17, Jones may raise
a glass of sparkling water when his fellow brother Hibernians honor him as “Hibernian of the Year at the Queens County AOH’s 140th Annual Dinner Dance. The event will take place at the Silver Gull Beach Club in Breezy Point and for $100 per person, includes an open bar, dinner from Ludwig’s and entertainment by the Cunningham Brothers. At the event, the AOH will also honor Rockaway W.I.S.H as “Charitable Organization of the Year, Bridget Rush-Hernandez as “Hibernian Sister of the Year and Father James Devine will receive the “Harry S. Murphy Catholic Action
Award. This will be the first time the event will be held on the peninsula. “All of the Hibernians of Queens County are really looking forward to this event, looking forward to celebrating 140 years and honoring all out honorees this year, Manning said. For ticket information, contact Manning at 917-589-0047 or queenscountypres@gmail.com. “If anybody ever wants to know more about the AOH, please see Brendan Jones at Rogers on any Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, he added. Salute To This Who Give Poseidon’s Parade kicks off at 11 a.m. this Saturday up on the boardwalk between Beach 106th and Beach 95th. This event will surely bring out the “creative side” of many on our peninsula and beyond. There is no better way to wrap up summer than being outside close to the water! Whether it’s on the bay eating great food, jet skiing, paddle boarding, fishing or simply enjoying the great food and entertainment along our beaches and boardwalk. With all the awesome food and drink and good music and entertainment, I think it’s so important to remember that all “the fun” that goes on around our great peninsula is not always for profit. We often take for granted the hard work and preparation by volunteers that goes into a parade such as the Rockaway St Patrick’s Day Parade or Memorial Day dedications or National Night Out and even surf contests and beach clean ups, and of course our very first Poseidon’s Parade. I know I often do! Many dedicated, hard working people put together all the great events throughout the year for us and make the Rockaway peninsula a great place to live, visit and just be! It’s important that we support these events, whether as a spectator or participant, as a way of thanking those who make it happen. I know if I were a bit better at contributing for this paper, the Rockaway Times, I would probably have all the names of those who make great things happen on our peninsula. I don’t! But I will!! I do know some though! I’ll put my money where my mouth is and give a big THANK YOU
to the Rockaway Beach Civic Association, which represents and makes the neighborhoods along Shore Front Parkway from beach to bay, such a better place to live!!! Thank you: Dolores Orr, Bridget Kaplinski, Eddy Pastore and Grace Miller and all the Rockaway Beach Civic members!!! So come out this Saturday and have fun by the sea and just be! Oh yeah... Speaking of volunteering… Rockaway Beach Civic will be hosting an end of summer beach cleanup on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. covering Beaches 73rd-108th. So after you’ve marched or had your fill of Oysters at the Oyster festival, Saturday, on Beach 116th, feel free to prepare our beaches for an awesome Fall, whatever street you may live on along our little slice of Heaven!

Beach Bounces Back – Crowds Flock Here By Katie McFadden Rockaway Beach is on the rise! Less than three years after Hurricane Sandy, this year’s beach season was close to pre-Sandy levels as far as attendance goes. According to the Parks Department, there were 7,738,500 visitors to Rockaway Beach this season, which started on May 23 and ended with an extension to September
13. The busiest day of the year was on July 19, when approximately 410,000 people came to the beach and August was the month with the highest attendance, with 2.8 million visitors. With the City allocating $687,000, the Parks Department was able to keep the city’s most popular beaches open and lifeguarded for a week past Labor Day. Not counting the extra week, there
were about 7,670,200 visitors from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend this year. Even so, these are good numbers compared to what the beaches looked like just after Sandy. In the summer of 2012, right before Hurricane Sandy, there were 7,789,950 visitors. In the first summer after Sandy, in 2013, there were only 3,313,660 visitors. This number went up slightly in 2014 with 4,166,445 people, but this summer saw a big jump from last year, with 3,572,055 more people coming out to the beach this summer to enjoy Rockaway and a mile-long stretch of its new boardwalk. “The outstanding attendance speaks for itself – Rockaway is not only bouncing back from the devastation of Sandy, but thanks in part to the new, resilient boardwalk, the City’s largest beach is better than ever,” NYC Parks Com-
The Rockaway Times missioner Mitchell Silver said. “Concession operators and the Rockaway economy also benefited from the high attendance levels. Parks is also thrilled to announce that there were no drownings at the [City] beach this year, and we applaud the great work of our lifeguard corps for risking their lives to ensure the safety of others.” Now the attendance numbers aren’t a perfect science. According to Parks, “In larger beaches like Rockaway, beach supervisors take attendance counts by section, and then add the totals to get a final amount. Estimates are taken twice a day.” However, there’s no doubt that beaches seemed to be bustling this summer. With a continuous boardwalk promised for next summer, 2016 may bring visitors back to, or better than pre-Sandy numbers.

OYSTER FEST TO TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY By Dylan Watton Eating oysters is a practice that has been around since antiquity. These delectable bivalve mollusks are nutritious and packed with vitamins and minerals, easy to eat via the practice of foraging, and can be prepared in a number of ways. Served fresh on a bed of ice, they can be a refreshing choice for a hot late summer’s day. Not to mention that are traditionally considered an aphrodisiac. In 1954, the west coast Irish city of Galway began their annual oyster festival, which has since become world famous as a place to dine on the popular shellfish and take in the best Irish culture has to offer. On Saturday, September 19, Rockaway will be treated to its own oyster festival, organized by Craic Fest. “It was something that we were looking to do that hasn’t been done before,” Terence Mulligan, one of the founders of Craic Fest said. Craic Fest is a nonprofit organization which holds an Irish film and music festival every March. “Oysters seem to be really popular the last couple of years, so we thought why not throw an oyster fest in Rockaway?” Mulligan has been coming to the Rockaways since he was young, often hanging with friends in Riis Park and surfing Rockaway’s famous beaches. “As a festival we wanted to expand,” he said. “It just made a lot of sense to hold [the oyster festival] on 116 St. given the large Irish and Irish-American community here in Rockaway.” The festival has offered two types of tickets, VIP and General Admission (GA). VIP tickets have been sold out since July, according to Mulligan, and while GA tickets

FINAL BASH FOR BEACH 97 CONCESSION The Beach 97 Concession is closing this weekend, but before it does, it’s going out with a party. The last day for Beach 97, the largest concession featuring Low Tide Bar and several food vendors, is Sunday, September 20, but the concession will host a big “Block Party” on Saturday. There will be food and drinks at the concession of course. Since fall is approaching, they will host a pumpkin carving contest. The party, which kicks
are no longer available on the website, a limited number of them will be sold on the day of the festival. Those interested in going to the festival who do you not yet have a ticket are encouraged to get to the festival site before 2 p.m., and tickets will be $25, cash only. GA patrons can just $5 for beer and $10 for a half-dozen oysters. In addition to thousands upon thousands of fresh oysters available to be eaten, the festival will also feature bands performing traditional and modern Irish music, including Lost Tribe of Donegal, The Narrowbacks, Jah Stix, and The Brothers Yee/Members of the Bogmen. Additionally, the festival will serve as a benefit for the family of one Rockaway’s favorite Irish sons, Brian Monaghan. “Brian was supposed to play the festival,” Mulligan, a longtime and drinking buddy friend of Monaghan, said. “We wanted to honor him by turning the festival into a benefit in Brian’s memory and so that his kids can build their college funds.” In another neat addition to the festival, Craic Fest has formed an alliance with the Billion Oyster Project. This organization will provide buckets to cleanly recycle the expected 10,000 oyster shells that will consumed over the course of the day. “Every oyster will be served fresh and cold, and people won’t have to worry about making a mess,” Mulligan said. The Rockaway Oyster Festival will run from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is strictly 21-and-over, and IDs must presented at the entrance. “This has been a lot of work for us but it will be worth it,” Mulligan said. “People are gonna be in for a special treat.
off at 2 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m., will feature live music and DJs all day starting with Stell & Snuggs, followed by DJ Reid One, the band Bad Sign, DJ Brother Nature, Matt Patterson with Click & Press and Solshyne will end the evening. The other concessions, Caracas at 106th and Rippers at 86th, will be open a little longer. Caracas will be open on weekends until Sunday, September 27 and Rippers will be open seven days until the 27th.

On Saturday, December 27, two EMT’s from FDNY EMS station 47 responded to a call over the radio of a baby that wasn’t breathing. EMTs Ian D’Souza and Chayim Spiegel retrieved a three-month old baby girl from a property near Beach 71st Street on Beach Channel Drive. The EMTs provided assisted ventilation to the infant and took her to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. According to a statement from St. John’s, the child was brought to the Emergency Department “due to cessation of breathing. At the ED, she was stabilized and treated until her oxygen levels rose from 78 percent to full functioning 100
percent. Once she was fully stabilized she was referred to Cohen Children’s Hospital where the patient is known to them.”

Ed’s Experimental Garden and My Harvesting Exhaustion
By Valerie Dare Last month I received an invitation from Ed Gormley to visit his experimental garden on Beach 129th Street. Ed’s yard – front and back – is all concrete. But growing is important to him, so he and his granddaughter started researching vertical gardening and, over Memorial Day weekend, created this wonderful experiment. Ed built his vertical garden using plastic soda bottles which he cut in half and suspended on netting attached to piping – sort of like a soccer net, only tightly strung. Out of these soda bottle pots, he grew various lettuces and beans. Ed harvested more than three pounds of lettuce and has enough beans stored for about 20 meals. Next year, he’s going to use full size bottles so that his plants have more room for root development. The next thing Ed decided to utilize was his fencing, which runs free and clear down one side of his property. He created planters using PVC piping, which he then secured to the fence. He planted cucumbers, beans and melons and trained them along the fence. I got a kick out of the melons, which can get pretty heavy. Growing them along a fence could be problematic. But Ed figured it out. He cradled the melons in mesh pouches secured to the fencing, so they were very nicely protected. “Basically, what this is all about is sustainability,â€? Ed says. He is concerned about the state of our food sources in the U.S., citing the drought in California as an example, and feels we need to be prepared for upcoming shortages. Already, he says, the prices of produce are higher than ever and also notes, by the time most of these fruits and veggies get to our local supermarkets, their nutritional value is almost gone. Ed plans to be very busy this winter. He will be building more racks for his vertical garden and will have one devoted solely to herbs. Ed said the biggest problem he is faced with is continuous good soil. He said, “Once the original nutrients in the soil have been used, replacing them is difficult.â€? So he’ll be working and experimenting and researching during the cold season to find the right soil mix. He will also be working on some kind of irrigation system that would work well in a vertical garden. Ed would love to see homeowners get rid of their lawns and use it to grow their own food instead. My new friend, Ed, is proving that you don’t need a big yard ‌ you don’t even need dirt! A vertical garden takes up little space but offers big rewards. It’s harvest time and I am exhaust-
ed. I am picking, pruning, pulling and snipping day in and day out. As someone who works full-time in Manhattan, the hours I can devote during the week are pretty non-existent. Getting home at seven each evening doesn’t leave me with many daylight hours. There are times I’m out there in my work clothes, harvesting by the porch light. Every available hour I have on the weekends is spent out in my backyard. Then, after I’m done for the day, there is the work of preparing, freezing, drying and canning. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. My freezer is filled with eggplant already breaded and fried. I have enough jars of tomatoes to last until the spring. I have jarred roasted sweet peppers and three different types of hot peppers. They are nicely preserved in olive oil. I also made stuffed peppers and froze those for future meals. I’ve dried thyme and lemon verbena. Basil, parsley and sage are in the freezer. Still have mint to store and more peppers. Joe calls it my mental therapy and, to a degree, he’s right. There is no stress in the garden. There is no aggravation, no attitude. There is just me and ‌ four resident bees, one huge red fuzzy spider, and a family of parsley caterpillars that morphed into black swallowtail butterflies. It’s so easy to understand that world. It’s so honest and simple. I don’t even think about checking my cellphone. I’d like to welcome the newest member of the DeMetropolis family into the Rockaway community as well as the world. Gavin James DeMetropolis was born on Sunday, September 13 at 12:15AM, weighing 7lbs. 3oz. Congratulations to Pete and Antoinette and, Lila, you’re going to be the best big sister!

Diary Of A Fat Man: Oh, Those Holidays A prominent Rabbi was once asked why all Jewish Holidays seemed to include special foods and lavish meals. What’s a Jewish holiday without Matzo Balls, Brisket and of course Chicken Soup? He gave what I feel is a very interesting response: “One must keep the body busy to free up the mind for more spiritual pursuits.” This is not limited by faith, either. What is the center of a family Easter celebration or a Christmas Day celebration? FOOD! Even Thanksgiving revolves around turkey, yams, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie! We must all be really keeping our bodies very, very busy, so a lot of spirituality is sneaking in! In fact the most important and holy days of both of the Muslim and Jewish faiths are fast days, Yom Kippur and Ramadan. Once again food, (or the lack of it,) is a central theme. What this is showing me is that on the most important days in all our calendars, the central theme has become EATING! A huge amount of glutinous stuffing of our faces until we can barely make it to the couch to loosen our pants!! “But”, you say, “holidays are festive times that we spend with our families and close friends. What better way to celebrate than eat and drink?” But... Holidays can also be a time of stress and what better way to deal with stress than eating half an apple pie? So what we see from this is that whatever one’s emotional state at the time, food is greatly involved. That’s why we really have to fight to be aware of what is driving us. (We will try and delve into this a bit deeper later on in the year before the holiday
season, so we can be somewhat prepared. Stay tuned). Another fun time for most of us are vacations. We travel long distances to see sights that we have only heard about or seen on TV and the movies. Or we stay in luxurious hotels and lounge around the pool area all day. But...What is the major topic of discussion that all vacationers dwell on? You got it... food! “Where are we eating dinner tonight?” What time is breakfast?” “Is this lunch or dinner?” We could be standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal or the Grand Canyon, but our eyes are darting around looking for the hot dog cart! A wonderful thing happened to me this past week. Eileen and I spent a few days in The Berkshires. In between museums we stopped for some lunch. When it was my turn to order I realized I really wasn’t hungry. I looked up to the waiter and said: “I’ll just have an iced coffee.” He seemed perturbed. Or was I just projecting my feelings that my not eating was upsetting him? (Remember the column of a few weeks ago about pleasing our parents?) Whatever.... It did make me feel great to JUST SAY NO!! I’ve waded through all the responses to last week’s question (actually just one) and we still don’t have a correct response , so keep trying: What happens to all the weight people lose? WHERE DOES IT GO? Send me your guesses to bbernfeld@gmail.com and the first correct answer wins a prize. (Just kidding, no prize) but I’ll try and work your name into a future column... maybe.

With the cold weather not that far away, it is time to plan on indoor projects. This week we are going to focus on something a little different, getting thrifty. You may not have thought of thrift shops as a place for DIYers. But that could be one of the best places to start a project. I personally like old wood projects, but no matter what you’re looking to work with, you always need a starting point. Thrift shops usually have plenty of items that are great for refinishing, whether it is sanding down an old chair and re-staining it or painting an old picture frame to go with the kid’s room. Most of these projects are great do it yourself projects. When time allows it can be very rewarding to go from thrift shop to thrift shop looking for that perfect chair, picture frame, or whatever you’re looking for. The best part is when you find it, it will be nothing like what you would find in the stores, and once you personalize it to your colors or finish it will be unique to your home.
The main thing is to find that special thing that catches your eye or is just right for the space you’re looking to put it. Be sure that no matter what you pick to start yourself off with it is a good starting project. Chairs should be sturdy, lamps should be working (electrically), etc. As an idea, one of my personal finds was a wood foot locker that needed some minor repair. After adding new hinges and securing a few pieces of wood, I added wheels. Now it stands on its side and the door opens to add storage space. I even have the top to use as a shelf. Best of all I can roll it out of the way when needed. This is just one idea, there are many creative things you can do with the right starting item. If you get creative with something you bought from a thrift shop, send in a picture with a short description on what you did to make it unique, we may share it with our readers. Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com.

KILDARE WALK – BREEZY POINT – 1946

The Rockaway Times
By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev Today we present two old views of Kildare Walk in Breezy Point and one is erroneously marked as being in Rockaway Park, Long Island. The bungalows are well kept, neat and tidy with great landscaping. Kildare Walk is located between Lincoln and Jamaica Walks on the south side of Oceanside Avenue. Since the construction of the rock jetty at the point in 1933 much new beach area has been added to the south end of Kildare, as well as all other walks east and west. Ocean waves once broke there.

A+A RESTAURANT MAKES THE GRADE By Dylan Watton Terrance Chen was trying to think of a new way to get people in the door. His A+A Chinese Restaurant, which opened on May 12, had been experiencing modest success but like any business owner he was looking to expand his customer base. Suddenly, he was struck by an idea. Up until that point, anybody who was 80 or older and had a birthday could come in and eat for free. “Now, for the month of September,” Chen declared, “If you prove it’s your birthday and make a reservation, you can eat for free too!” He thought for a moment. “As long as you’re ages one to 100 on your birthday,” he added. A+A differs from Rockaway’s established Chinese restaurants in more than just providing customers with a birthday meal, though. Chen and his wife Lulu had a vision for a different type of eating establishment brought on by years of experience and an affection for true home-style cooking. “We had a restaurant in Flushing that closed after only a year,” Chen said. Flushing is the city-wide hub for Chinese food, even more so than Manhattan’s or Brooklyn’s famous China-

town areas, and thus competition is fierce. Living in Oceanside, the Chens were familiar with Rockaway and once an opportunity to open their restaurant on the peninsula presented itself, they took it. “I wanted to introduce real Chinese food to Rockaway,” Chen said. A+A’s head chef, Chef Ho, hails from Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province in southwest China. “In China there are eight styles of food total,” Chen explained. “Most Chinese people like Sichuan food the most.” Famous Sichuan (also spelled Szechuan) dishes include kung pao chicken, double cooked pork, and dan dan noodles, all of which are served at A+A. “We have five or six guys working in the kitchen, usually,” Chen added. “Every one of them has been professionally trained in China. Chef Ho worked at a five-star restaurant [in China].” A+A also distinguishes itself from traditional American Chinese food fare by offering fresh, healthy ingredients and dishes. “We always buy our food from a primary market, sometimes in Flushing or Manhattan, but also sometimes right from China,” Chen said. “Our sweet and sour sauce is made with organ-

ic haw slices,” he added, referencing the Chinese hawthorn, a bright red fruit used to make many traditional Chinese sauces and foods. While there are some standards on the menu, such as fried dumplings and lo mein, you won’t find things like fried noodles or especially fried chicken. “Why don’t we make chicken wings?” Chen asked rhetorically. “They contain so much oil inside. Most of the time the chicken is fried in the same oil over and over, that’s how it gets golden. We always use fresh soybean oil to fry.” Among Chen’s personal recommendations on the menu are the vegetable spring roll, which has barely any grease on it and is best complimented by the sweet and sour sauce. The house seafood special soup contains fresh squid, clams, scallops, and shrimp in a
clear broth, and is served piping hot. The General Tso’s tofu is crispy on the outside yet delicate and smooth once bitten into, and contains a natural tanginess with no overpowering sweet taste. A+A Chinese Restaurant is located between Beach 92nd and 91st Street on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. They offer eat-in, take out and delivery options, but the food is best experienced at the restaurant, according to Chen. “My family has been in this business for over 20 years,” he said. “We want to give Rockaway Chinese food as we know it.” And if you have a September birthday, there’s no better place to go.

Ideas for Public Bus Service 30 Years Later
Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com
Growing up in Brooklyn without a car and relying on public transportation, I noticed how poor the bus service was to the beaches. The buses were mobbed and often skipped dozens of bus stops leaving intended riders waiting over an hour as overcrowded buses passed by. Years later when I was Director of Bus Planning at the MTA, New York City Transit in 1981 and 1982, I sent inspectors to monitor beach service to document it. The MTA only kept records for weekday service and much of that was fudged whereby bus dispatchers recorded the times when a bus was supposed to arrive instead of when it actually did. Still, even with documentation I could not convince the powers that be to make substantial changes. In 1984, regular “traffic checkers” were hired to monitor all bus route patronage on all days and seasons. Slowly, the service improved to more closely match the demand and today most of the beach services operate fairly well. Today, I can see the Marine Parkway Bridge from my window, but a mass transit trip to the Rockaways from my home requires three or four buses, a double fare, and takes about 90 minutes. That is crazy. The 25 cent ferry from Sheepshead Bay that existed until the 1960s is gone. This past Labor Day I decided to take the Q35 to Riis Park after not having used it for over 30 years. I was amazed to find that the horrible beach service I regularly experienced in the 1960s and 70s still exists today on the Q35. In fact, it is worse. When the route was operated by Green Lines, they operated supplementary service to Riis Park. The MTA ,which operates the bus route today, operates all service to Beach 116th Street. When the bus arrives at Riis Park with 20 passengers already aboard, how does the MTA think they can fit on another 100 more who are waiting for the bus
on a hot summer weekend? They can’t and most times it is not possible to board the first bus. Many riders are forced to wait between 60 and 90 minutes. Vans to Brooklyn for six dollars a ride have appeared at Riis Park. In 1980 and 1981, the MTA extended two Brooklyn bus routes to Riis Park, on summer weekends. Although they were successful, the MTA terminated service when the federal subsidy expired. Also, the MTA added five Q35 bus stops further increasing demand. We do not need SBS. What we need is adequate bus service. Q53 bus riders at Beach 96th and 98th Street are regularly bypassed in the summer due to overcrowding. SBS proposes to eliminate those bus stops...The result will be lines stretching around the block at Beach 116th Street. That will not help beachgoers. We need more and better bus routes to the Rockaways especially from Brooklyn. The underutilized B2 from the Kings Highway Station could be extended from Kings Plaza. A bus could operate along Knapp Street, Avenue U and Flatbush Avenue to Riis Park or from Sheepshead Bay Station via the Belt Parkway. Routes from central Brooklyn would help stimulate the Rockaway economy and shorten trips for Rockaway residents. Ferries from Sheepshead Bay; the options are numerous. Yet the MTA is only willing to consider SBS, not QueensRail or even rerouting buses to serve the new ferries in 2017. If the MTA were truly interested in improving service to the Rockaways, there certainly is no shortage of good ideas. (Allan Rosen is a former Director of Bus Planning for MTA NYCT and a member of the Queens Public Transit Committee.) Got an idea to improve transportation in the City or Rockaway? 9/11 Remembered Story and Photos By Katie McFadden
On Friday, September 11, the community marked the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with somber ceremonies, paying tribute to the fallen, at Tribute Park. Several firefighters, police, military members, local leaders, family members of victims and other member of the community, gathered for the morning ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Bagpipers played and vocalist Chazmond Peacock sang during the event. Many volunteered to lay roses on the compass in the middle of the park as the names of Rockaway’s victims were read. During the evening ceremony, singers Andrew Feldman, Yamila Frej and Steven Wagner performed and there was music by Aerial Acoustics. The FDNY fireboat put on a beautiful water display on the bay before sunset. Following the display, the names of the victims were read as a bell was tolled and volunteers planted American flags around the piece of steel from the World Trade Center. Some people stayed until dark to see the Tribute in Light in Manhattan. The events were made possible by Friends of Tribute Park, 1-800-FLOWERS, the DeMatteis Family, Brown’s Hardware and those who volunteered.

JFK Construction Project Cleared For Landing Over the past year, Rockaway residents may have heard an increase in sounds from the sky, as a construction project at JFK Airport led to flights being forced to redirect their landing patterns, often over the peninsula. But the long wait to end the constant hum of planes’ engines will soon be over. State Senator Joseph Addabbo announced that the efforts to reconstruct Runway 4L-22R have been successful and that the landing strip will be reopened on Monday,
September 21. The runway has been widened 150 to 200 feet, along with more than 700 feet of runway pavement being added and the upgrading of outdated communication and navigation equipment. “Obviously, maintaining an airport can sometimes require lengthy construction projects that have unfortunate repercussions on the neighboring communities, Senator Addabbo said. “The redirecting of flights every couple of minutes every day for several months has pummeled this community with an unsafe and unhealthy amount of airplane noise and pollution, and I look forward to a large portion of that being eased when construction wraps up next week.
Bowl On! Want to have some good, clean fun on Saturdays? Put on your bowling shoes and join the Rockaway Community Bowling League. The league meets for 36 weeks at 6 p.m. at Woodmere Lanes (948 Broadway in Woodmere). Bowlers of all skill levels are welcome, from beginner to professionals. The league makes games even more fun with 50/50s, tournaments and celebrations. Woodmere Lanes also has a snack bar, pro-shop and The Backstage lounge. The league started on September 12, but it’s not too late to join. If you can’t commit to 36 weeks don’t worry. You can always be a sub. Leagues are usually split up into teams that play each other. HUNDREDS OF BIKE TOUR RIDERS PASS THROUGH ROCKAWAY Driving up Cross Bay Boulevard heading to Rockaway on Sunday, September 13, one may have seen scores of bicycle riders braving the heat, fixing their many flat tires, and taking in the scenes of the peninsula. This large pack of peddlers were part of the 26th Annual Century Bike Tour, the nation’s only 100-mile urban bike tour. The event, organized by advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, began in 1990 and offers riders the choice of 35, 55, 75, and 100mile bike rides throughout the five boroughs. the Rockaways were some of the most experienced cyclists, as only the 75 and 100-mile routes passed through here. After starting out with just 200 riders, this year’s event attracted approximately 7,000 people, according to the bike tour’s website. While some riders simply paid a fee to participate, others took the opportunity to ride and raise money for Vision Zero, the city’s traffic safety program which in part seeks to increase bike paths in New York. All players signing up for the Senior basketball programs (6th to the 8th grade) must bring a birth certificate to registration. The registration fee will be $65 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. As always, volunteers are needed to help make the program a success. If you are interested in volunteering as a Coach, or as a Program Director, please come to registration and let us know. These are great programs for the children and young adults in our community. Please come and sign your children up for the programs, and please make an effort to volunteer in some capacity (even part time) to help us keep these great programs going.
