POSEIDON’S PARADE IS SATURDAY LINE UP! By Bert Sanders

After two months of following The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade around in an attempt to relay vital information about Poseidon’s Parade to the Rockaway masses, we have finally arrived at the big event: This Saturday at high noon, Rockaway’s beloved board-less-walk will be transformed into a living and breathing art exhibit. Sea creatures, Greek deities, recycled costume creators, musicians, dancers, pets, children, fully grown children, public stretchers, Vic Thrillers, fantastical floats, and a whole bunch of Rockaway freaks and families alike will follow Whalemina down the boardwalk, starting at the Beach 106th concession, in a public display of Rockawayness. As a community of summer addicts, we will rise again one more time to put summer 2019

to bed. If preliminary forecasts are correct, Hurricane Humberto will also be blessing the peninsula with 4-6 foot waves, setting the perfect backdrop for the annual end of summer strut. In this way, Poseidon himself will be flexing his muscles for surfers and spectators alike. Surfer dudes should show gratitude to the brigade for pleasing the surf gods. After a dismal

summer display, Poseidon has been rewarding surfers with several amazing late summer swells. Five people who will not be gazing at the surf are this year’s judges. As in years past, the judges will be positioned on colorfully decorated lifeguard chairs with their backs to the ocean. Members of the brigade told me that there is a top-secret formula for judge selec-

tion, but I have yet to see a pattern emerge. All I know is that no one ever gets to be a judge twice, and to quote a sign in old Rincon, PR surf bar, “We are all here because we are not all there.” Judges tend to represent various elements of New York City's beach party capital. This year’s judges are: Chris Nelson, Cedric “Ceddy Ced” Ced, Bill Gehlhaus, Tara Vasselmen, and Noreen Mulvanerty. While some expressed concern about publishing these names, The Brigade insists that the identities be made public. “How will people present the perfect bribes if they don’t even know who they are bribing?” Brigade captain Geoff explained in a snarky quip. So, I moved into the right lane then swerved into the left, swerved back to the right, swerved again and then jerked the wheel to get back in the left lane. And then waited for a bike rider to pass so I could make a right turn from the left lane. I should have gotten a Driving Under the Influence but I was stone cold sober. I should have been pulled over for reckless driving, at least, but I had a foolproof excuse: I was just following the driving lanes in Rockaway. There’s some thing, an island? A something-or-other that is near the median at Beach 105th Street and it just causes driver after driver – believe me, you can read their lips – saying, what in the hell is that? There’s another one at Beach 102nd and RBB. Me, being the dogged journalist that I am, asked the Department

of Transportation spokesperson. She said, I’ll get back to you. Really. She had no clue. Sometime later, another DOT person, who must do comedy on the side, said, they are “painted median tip extensions” and “used as a traffic calming tool for turning vehicles.” Calming? I got my first laugh of the week. Bus that-never-come lanes are now all over the place and white lines that give me geometry class flashbacks are splattered everywhere. Now, I’ve been biking since before it was cool and before fat guys tried to be sausages. What is it that makes a guy (or woman) want to dress as if they’re actually in the Tour de France? Bike shorts, I’ll give you. But the tops? Stop. You are not Lance Armstrong; you are the Michelin Man. I’m just glad basketball players in the park aren’t doing this. Yeah, imagine, guys getting in full Los Angeles Lakers or New

York Knicks uniforms. God forbid. But where was I? Oh, biking. Yeah, I’ve been biking forever. And a bike lane here or there is fine but some are insane and just meant to screw things up. Why is there a bike lane on Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 116th to Beach 108th? There’s a friggin’ boardwalk one block south. And how about those bike lanes that hug the curb so that

parked cars are now in the middle of the street? It’s just as bad in Brooklyn. You see cars in the middle of the street, what do you do? You get in line because you figure they’re just waiting for a light to change. Of course, if you need to parallel park into one of those spaces, you will cause all traffic behind you to stop. Or others will have to swing into oncoming traffic. It’s nuts and I want to scream but I’ll just type really hard. I mean, it used to take 12 minutes to drive from Beach 116th to Far Rockaway. Now you need to stay at the La Quinta on the way. The people in charge of traffic clearly do not drive or they’re aiming to drive us insane. I get it, they’re hoping to get people out of their cars and onto public transportation. As if that’s an option. They’re making driving liking smoking, something socially dubious. You drive? Eeew. This is effin crazy. I’m going back to Beach 105th and sit near that calming thing. But I’m gonna walk there.

Locals Testify Against Shelter at Contract Hearing By Katie McFadden

Rockaway is not letting the proposed homeless shelter for 226 Beach 101st Street go through without a fight. A select few locals have gone above and beyond in the shelter protest by bringing solid facts and findings to a public contract hearing for the shelter. On September 12, a team including local resident Torey Schnupp, CPA Sarah Kenny, lawyer Mike Scala and lawyer Erik Palatnik made the trip to 1 Centre Street in Manhattan to testify against a proposed contract between the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and provider, Black Veterans for Social Justice (BVSJ), for the Beach 101st property that has been undergoing renovations by property owner, Liberty One Group. On August 30, a not-so-public announcement was made

about a contract hearing for the Rockaway shelter on Thursday, September 12. The proposed contract for BVSJ to operate the shelter for 120 single men comes with a price tag of $40,780,555 for a period from September 1, 2019 to June 30, 2024, with one four-year option to renew from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2028. Breaking this down, those from Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters, a local group against the shelter, found this to mean that it would cost $71,500 to house each man per year at the converted warehouse. And that hefty price-tag, which is higher than the average median income for Rockaway residents, is just one of many reasons the group used to testify against the contract and ask that it not be signed. According to Schnupp, there were hearings for two other shelters in Brooklyn that day, which no one showed up to tes-

tify for or against. It is believed there was low attendance due to many not knowing about the hearing in the first place. Schnupp says she felt fortunate to be given a heads up about the hearing from Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office, who caught wind of the notice on the City Record. With limit-

ed time, Schnupp and the others were able to come up with well-thought out testimonies that they presented to representatives from DHS, the Mayor’s Office, HPD and others at the hearing on September 12. Schnupp cited several reasons against the shelter being placed in Rockaway, including how Rockaway has already seen its fair share of supporting the less fortunate with 6,000 residential beds and 8,000 units of public housing in a community that has one hospital with a failing grade, in a borough with the highest unemployment rate, and some of the worst transportation options in the city. She also pointed out how the shelter would be placed near eight schools and how students utilize Beach 101st to walk to nearby mass transit options. The cost itself was another major red flag for Schnupp, saying Continued on page 9

“$71,500 per man, per year is more than the average income of local residents. That’s roughly $6,000 a month to be warehoused and turned loose during the day. It's both reckless and destabilizing to the homeless men and the neighborhood.” In her testimony, Kenny took a hit at some inconsistencies with BVSJ’s past financials. From an audited financial statement form 2016, Kenny found that the organization received grants from the city which totaled $7.3 million. “The biggest program expense, at $5.5 million is housing services. More than $4 million of this went to salaries, fringe benefits, automobile expenses, travel, office supplies and administrative overhead,” Kenny said. But that wasn’t all she found. “The audited financial statements show that BVSJ has made advances of granted funds to several for-profit affiliated entities that it owns,” she said. “Management opted to

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2019 not include the results of these affiliates in a consolidated set of financial statements, even though it is the sole shareholder and consolidation is required by generally accepted accounting principles in the US.” Attorney Mike Scala took a legal approach to his testimony, expressing concerns that the contract could violate some state laws, and that the cost per man and some changes made to the contract, have raised some red flags that this proposed shelter may actually be made for a mentally disabled population. “I reviewed the contract and mental health services are mentioned numerous times. If this facility is not handling a mentally disabled population, why would these services be added to the contract? The contract for 120 single men is at $8.5 million per year. The same provider has operated the Pamoja House shelter for 200 single men for as low as $4 million. Is there a reason this contract is substantially inflated? Or will the nature of the population be different?

The cost to house a homeless person with a serious mental illness is around $58K a year. For a non-mentally disabled person, it should be about $35K a year. The breakdown of this contract come to approximately $71,500 per person, more than doubling the estimate for a non-mentally disabled individual,” Scala found. He also found that if the shelter is indeed for the mentally disabled, it would be in violation of state laws. “While we understand the population of this facility would be 120 single men, the mental health status of these individuals is legally significant,” Scala said. “Under §31.23 of the state Mental Hygiene Law, a community residence for the mentally disabled requires approval of the commissioner of mental health. Further, 14 N.Y.C.R.R. §595.5(b) provides that such approval cannot be granted if more than 48 congregate beds are located on the premises. Therefore, it is critical to determine whether this facility would house mentally ill men.”

Page 9 At the end of their testimonies, the group asked that the contract not be approved. The respective agencies represented at the hearing will now have an opportunity to vote on the contract. The contract will then head to Comptroller Scott Stringer who will have the ability to approve or deny it. Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters is hoping that the contract not only be rejected, but that Stringer takes it a step further by investigating BVSJ, Liberty One Group and DHS. Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters reiterates their message that while they understand the plight of the homeless and they’re not against the city having a comprehensive program to care for them, the group believes there needs to be better oversight of shelter developers they say are lining their pockets with taxpayer funds, the not-for-profits that are created simply to run the sites, and the DHS, whose leaders they allege tend to approve anything that crosses their desks.

Harbor Light Remains Stuck on an Elevator By Katie McFadden

In October 2018, The Rockaway Times reported that the Harbor Light would be open in time for the holidays after clearing a major hurdle with the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals on October 11. After what was an uphill battle with the agency that lasted several years, it seemed there was finally a light at the end of the tunnel for the beloved restaurant that has long been rebuilt after burning down during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. In November, the Harbor Lightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sign went up on the building, giving people a glimmer of hope. But the holidays came and went, and Rockaway never received the gift of the Harbor Light opening. On March 2, for the Rockaway St.

Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day Parade, locals celebrated as the Harbor Light opened its doors to the community for the occasion and people got a sneak peak of the interior due to a temporary permit for the day. Had the phoenix finally risen from the ashes? The doors closed

again. Another summer season has just come to an end, a critical time for any small business in Rockaway. The Harbor Light Restaurant and Pub remains closed. As locals question the holdup and rumors start to swirl, owner Sean Heeran wanted to take

the opportunity to clear the air and explain the further delays. The latest hurdle is something meant to lift people up, but for the Heeran family, it continues to hold them downâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;an elevator. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been waiting on our handicap elevator out front to be inspected. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been waiting for almost a month to get this figured out, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a systems problem with the Department of Buildings (DOB) causing a holdup, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a nightmare,â&#x20AC;? Heeran said. Due to the alleged DOB systems problem, the owners cannot process the paperwork to get the elevator signed off on. The elevator inspection is the last piece Heeran needs to acquire a liquor license for the restaurant, so that they can get a temporary Certificate of Occupancy.

Prior to getting stuck on the elevator, the Harbor Light ran into a few other issues during inspections. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had to go through many inspections. There was a construction inspection, which failed, so we had to take care of that. Then there was a public assembly inspection that we failedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;twice. Each one of these takes weeks and weeks to get through. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been an uphill battle. We spent three-and-ahalf years in the BSA case and that was finished in October, but we still had the DOB ahead of us and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just been a very time consuming, uphill battle,â&#x20AC;? Heeran said. The Harbor Light eventually cleared the inspections and Heeran says the restaurant has been ready to go for about Continued on page 11

It’s more of an internal issue with DOB and it’s really held us up big time,” Heeran said. “I didn’t see any of this coming. I figured once we passed the public assembly inspection, we just needed the elevator, and that was months ago, and it’s been a lot of back and forth with expeditors trying to get the paperwork processed but we’ve run into this snag because of the DOB system.” As the Harbor Light continues to sit as a money pit that can’t open its doors to recoup the costs, Heeran is beyond frustrated. “We’re paying insurance. We’re paying taxes. We’re on this sinking ship, just trying to hold on and get through

If there’s anyone out there that can help us with this, we’d really appreciate it because we’re at a point where we don’t know what to do anymore.” Heeran says once the elevator hurdle clears, he should be able to acquire a liquor license quickly, as it’s already waiting on the back burner, and the temporary CofO can come soon after, allowing the restaurant to finally open. In the meantime, Heeran says he appreciates the patience and support from the community. “We really appreciate the support from the neighborhood and what the elected officials have been doing for us. I feel Rockaway is always put on the back burner. We were in business for 33 years and burned to the ground and now we’re just looking to get up and running again and it’s been seven years already,” Heeran said. “It’s really tough.”

The Dropout Goes Hog Wild For Opening Party By Katie McFadden

A pound of pig brined for 48 hours and cooked since the early hours of the morning. Tater tots cooked in pork fat from the pig. Pickled watermelon rinds. Cole Slaw, lightly seasoned with vinegar and pepper. Homemade tangy barbecue sauce to dip the pork in. And even a bit of homemade cornbread with butter on the side. All of these different flavors complemented each other when served on platter at The Dropout’s Hog Wild pig roast opening party in Riis Park. And if that sounds good, just wait, because chef Julia Steinberg will be dishing out plenty more goodies all season at Riis Park Beach Bazaar’s winter restaurant. Steinberg has made her return to Riis, bringing back some of the same great tastes that people first got to experience at The Dropout in winter 2017/18, and adding more creative concoctions to the mix that are

sure to keep customers full and returning for seconds throughout Rockaway’s offseason. And the perfect way to kick it all off was with something rarely seen in Rockaway—a pig roast. On Friday, September 13, a limited number of guests were treated to the hog feast, which sold out just a few days after it was announced. Beginning 7 a.m., Steinberg was hard at work, cooking the massive pig to feed about 40 guests for The

Dropout’s opening party that evening. “I kind of wanted to do something different. I’ve worked in Riis for about four or five years with Whit, Susan from Rockaway Clam Bar and The Dropout, and every year someone says, ‘we should do a pig roast’ and no one ever does it. So we kept talking about it and thought it would be fun to open the restaurant with one,” Steinberg said.

With only so much pig to go around, tickets were limited, and many who expressed interest in the event were told it was sold out early on. So, Steinberg plans on doing it again…and again. “This one was just for the opening party. We can only do about 40 tickets at a time. I cooked a 75lb pig but a lot of people got shut out even though they were interested in coming. So I think we’re going to make it, hopefully, an every other Friday thing. If people want to come, I’d love to accommodate more people,” she said. However there’s much more in store that will keep people dropping by The Dropout (16702 Rockaway Beach Blvd) all winter. The restaurant will be open Thursdays through Sundays, with dinner from 5 p.m. until about 9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and Steinberg’s specialty—brunch— from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Continued from Page 12 off the first brunch with some unique, delicious dishes such as a bacon, egg and cheese on churro waffles, a Polish platter complete with Polish sausage, egg, heirloom tomato salad and toast, and an “everything but the bagel” platter complete with lox over fresh greens and topped with everything bagel seasoning. Steinberg is also bringing back a classic that kept people coming back each weekend during her first winter at Riis— the fried chicken sando. The crispy, spicy, fried chicken on a seeded bun, complete with homemade slaw and thin garlic pickle slices, is no doubt, a huge hit. “I took a poll online, asking if we could keep one item from the old menu and bring it back, what would it be? We had 350 responses. Over 300 were for the chicken sandwich. It’s back. It’s here. It’s not going anywhere,” she said. What else will be on the menu? Well, that depends on

what’s most fresh. “We’re going to do things seasonally and keep it as fresh and delicious as possible with various fruits and vegetables,” she said. Each day, Steinberg heads to Rockaway’s own Curran’s Superior Meat for fresh protein for the day, Seatide Gourmet Seafood in Brooklyn to pick out the catch of the day, and the best seasonal produce she can find at the Rockaway Farmers Market on Beach 116th or Edgemere Farm. The menu for the day is built around what she finds. However on October 5 and 6, the menu will be particularly Bavarian. After all, it’s Riis Park’s 5th Annual Oktoberfest. Steinberg will be serving up all the food for the two-day event, which will feature imported

German beers, live music and DJs. The menu will include Bavarian pretzels, smoked kielbasa heroes with sauerkraut and whole grain mustard, bratwurst, and goodies for the kids including hot dogs and chicken tenders. “We’re going to do a couple good things well and take good care with the sausages, preparing them the right way,” she said. Steinberg has a good grasp on any challenge that comes across her kitchen. After all, she’s had plenty of experience, starting when she was a teen. “I got into cooking by accident. I was working at the Dept. of Investigation while in college and at night I’d bartend at Rockaway Seafood. They were short on someone at the salad station in the kitchen, so I said I’d do it. I was about 18 at the time and I just loved the dynamics of the kitchen. I’d go work for DOI in the morning and I’d be thinking about being in the restaurant all day, so instead of taking a full-time job with DOI, I decided I was going to work in restaurants instead,” she said.

Page 13 Along the way, Steinberg picked up plenty of experience with some of the best in the business, including Whitney Aycock, who she calls a huge mentor. However, she also worked with many Michelin Star chefs, classically trained French chefs and even the chef behind Ivan Ramen, who’s featured on the Chef’s Table on Netflix. “I went to different restaurants, figuring out what I enjoyed, and while I found fine dining to be technical, challenging and great, the way Whit cooks is the way I aspire to make my food, putting your own spin on things I’ve learned along the way,” she said. As for The Dropout, Steinberg hopes that people come out and enjoy the experience with her. “I just want everyone to come and have a good time in an environment where people can hang with their family and friends, listen to music and enjoy good food,” she said. “Especially in the winter, when there’s nothing to do and it gets so stale, we just come here and have fun every day.”

Rockaway’s Bravest Makes It to the Big Screen By Katie McFadden

Every week, Mario Polit performs in one of his most important roles—an FDNY firefighter. But the firefighter by day may turn into a star overnight as he’s made it on to the big screen in a new box office hit—"Hustlers.” If you call 911 for a fire emergency in Rockaway, Polit, a lieutenant for Rockaway Park’s firehouse, Engine 268/ Ladder 137, may be among the heroes that come to your rescue. The Long Beach resident has been working at the local firehouse as a lieutenant for more than five years. However, his career with the FDNY goes back to May 9, 1999, when he first started the job. Early on in his career, Polit was put to the ultimate test when faced with 9/11. Polit was off duty that day but reported to the site the night of the attack. He lost nine brothers from his firehouse that day and spent the next 10 months at Ground Zero, trying to find their bodies, or any others. Polit spent 15 years

of his FDNY career with Ladder 106 in Brooklyn before being transferred to Rockaway when he got a promotion. However, before fighting fires came the battle of remembering lines for auditions. About eight years prior to starting his career with the FDNY, Polit fell in love with acting. Polit and his family were invited to see a play starring his brother, something his family didn’t know he was pursuing. “My brother was the lead.

I was floored by his character. He inspired me. I said, ‘I wanna do that.” So Polit started taking acting classes and starring in student films, which eventually led him to his first big role in a 1997 film featuring Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt, “Devil’s Own.” From there, Polit, who has an Ecuadorian background, was typecasted into what he jokingly calls, “positive Hispanic roles. I was a drug dealer, prison inmate, car thief…” That

typecasting eventually led him to an appearance on what some consider to be the biggest "Sopranos" episode of the series in 2000. “I played the guy who raped Dr. Melfi and got away with it,” Polit said. “I thought that was my lucky break. It was the most talked about episode.” However, Polit’s acting career came to a slowdown. That is—until recently. A few days ago, someone compared Polit to a mix of another "Sopranos" actor—James Gandolfini, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, after seeing him in his new role in “Hustlers.” Starring as the detective that takes down a group of scamming strippers, played by some big names such as Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu and Keke Palmer, just to name a few, Polit may have just gotten his big break as an actor. Polit in his everyday role as a firefighter

Polit started focusing on acting again about five years ago. He made appearances on shows like Louis CK’s “Louie,” HBO show “Crashing,” a recurring role on “The Deuce” and more, this time being typecast in more good guy roles. However he was playing the very important role of father on a trip to Disney World with his wife and young daughter, when he got a call about an audition that he didn’t want to do, but would ultimately change his life. “I was on vacation and my agent called and said she had this audition. I told her I was away and didn’t want to do it. I found out that it was starring Jennifer Lopez and my wife was like, what’s the big deal? So my daughter held the camera and I read the lines for an audition tape,” Polit said. “I get back from Disney and my agent says I have a callback.” A few weeks later, Polit got the part. Working around his FDNY schedule, Polit filmed his scenes around Manhattan and Westchester starting at the end of February. Last Friday, September 13, “Hustlers” hit theaters and the past few weeks have been a whirlwind for the actor. “I just hit 20 years with the FDNY and now this…I’m on cloud nine,” he said. Polit says even the rest of the

guys at his firehouse are proud of him, showing their support in the best way they know how. “The firehouse guys are always cracking jokes on me,” he said. “But they’re excited. On Saturday, they, along with 55 of my friends, family, guys from the firehouse, guys I grew up, all came to a premiere party at the Lynbrook Regal movie theater. They all love the movie,” he said. Even though he played a detective on screen, Polit says he didn’t forget his other profession and even found a way to pay tribute to it in the film. “When J.Lo announced the movie would come out on September 13, I realized that would be right after 9/11. Originally, my character was named Detective 1 and my co-star, Paul Nielsen was Detective 2. We thought it would be nice to have names. So he took the name Hunter, after his brother-in-law who worked in Squad 288 and died on 9/11. I remembered hearing about Rafael Hernandez, a Mexican firefighter who was down at Ground Zero and died of 9/11-cancer.” When they presented the idea to director, Lorene Scafaria, she was on board. They got to star as Detectives Hunter and Hernandez on screen. Polit will get to pay even more of a tribute to the job when he stars in his next big role—as firefighter—in Judd Apatow’s “Staten Island,” a film about Pete Davidson after his firefighter father dies on 9/11. The film, due on June 19, 2020, also features actor Steve Buscemi, who worked as an FDNY firefighter for four years before taking on acting full time. As for Polit, he says he plans on sticking around the firehouse if possible. “I’d like to stay on for another four years until I hit 25 years with the department. But who’s not to say something crazy happens with this movie? It’s number two in the country. Then I’d probably do what Steve did and take a leave of absence and make a decision, but in the meantime, I plan on continuing both careers,” he said. “I love both. I love being a fireman and I love being an actor and I’m very blessed because I get to do two passions for a living.”

Local Musician to Play Across the Pond By Katie McFadden

He’s the man that puts together the music at Rockstock and Barrels and he’s graced just about every music venue in town, donating his talent at fundraisers, joining in with other local musicians and dazzling with his own bands, Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape, Q-South and Kings Heartbeat. Now he's taking his iconic voice across the pond. Walker Hornung is on his way to England to perform as the opener for a major tribute to Lou Reed. Leaving Thursday, September 19, Hornung, of Howard Beach, will be touring every major city in England for a week before returning home on September 29. Along the way, he’ll be playing some of his acoustic hits from different parts of his nearly 30-year music career. How this came to be goes back to January 2018, when Hornung headlined a show at

BB Kings in Manhattan. “I invited some friends from the UK, Fifteen Lions, to perform at the show, and after, one of the guys asked me for an audition tape because he was involved in an upcoming show for Lou Reed. A few years back, there was this Holy Holy tour where all of David Bowie’s former musicians got together to

perform Bowie’s music. The tour was a success and went on to go around most of the world. They decided to do a Lou Reed version and asked this prepunk singer Richard Strange to do it, so he’ll be singing the Lou Reed songs and they asked me to come over and do the opening and sing on two of the Lou Reed songs,” Hornung said.

The Lou Reed tour will make its way across to venues that seat around 1,500 in six English cities including London, Liverpool, Birmingham and Norwich, over the course of seven days, and Hornung has hopes that it will see the same success as the Holy Holy tour did. “This is the debut of it. Hopefully they’ll extend it to other parts of the world,” he said. For something so big, Hornung has spent plenty of time preparing for it. While Hornung usually has the backing of his bands, this time it’s a solo act. “It’s like the old days. It’s just me and my guitar, playing my original songs,” he said. Hornung has prepared at least 15 acoustic songs, some from his Q-South days and many from Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape, and will choose which to perform during his sets based on the vibe he gets from the crowd, or requests from fans that follow his Continued on page 17

Even though it’s his first time touring around England, Hornung says he already has an English fanbase from time spent playing with bands from England in the ‘90s with Q-South, and through playing his soca music in London. “My initial entrance into England was through my soca music. That opened a lot of doors. It exposed me to this huge Caribbean population in London. They do their version of Carnival called Notting Hill, so people got to know my music there,” he said. While playing acoustically may prevent him from performing soca, Hornung hopes his fans will appreciate his other work that may attract another fanbase. After all, it’s really his voice that connects with people, no matter the genre of music, “I’ve always felt that my singing voice is what connects with people. I’ve done a lot of styles of music and have found that the one common link throughout has been my voice,” he said.

When Hornung returns, he’ll be right back to working hard. After all, he’s planning on releasing a new Brotherhood of the Grape album by Christmas. Some of the songs are already finished, and he’ll be debuting them while in England, but Hornung says he’s ready to bring the material home too. “We can’t wait to come back. We’re excited to come out and play it for New York,” he said. The band will be playing a gig in Milwaukee in November, but on December 7, they’ll be back to the local stages, playing at 7 p.m. at RBQ’s, where Rockaway can get a taste of the new jams. Even though he’s been doing music for nearly 30 years, Hornung knows the importance of keeping it fresh. “You’re as important as your latest work. You gotta keep working and making music. It never ends. You grow and your audience grows up with you,” he said. Getting to play stages in England, it’s clear that Hornung’s music is always blossoming.

The anti-Semitic graffiti at the Silver Gull Club and on the beach were most likely the work of a low-IQ teenage miscreant who thought it was funny. I do believe that we live in a post-racial era where, to paraphrase Dr. King, we judge a person not by the color of their skin but rather the content of their character. Rockaway Rock & Roll Dear Editor: If you are one that drives a vehicle in Rockaway on Beach Channel Drive, 116th St. or Rockaway Beach Blvd., you have experienced the uneven, bumpy roads. It has gotten so bad that you feel like you are in a stagecoach. No doubt, my internal organs have been displaced. Why can't the DOT do these roads like Shorefront Parkway, which is fine. Also, the roadwork never seems to stop, as we are continually detoured and driving around cones. Has anyone, local politicians, Community Board, ever asked the DOT about these deplorable roads? Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer and cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, accounting for about 50,000 deaths in 2017. The lifetime risk of its occurrence is estimated to be one in 21 men and one in 23 women. Its incidence has declined 24 percent over the last 30 years and by three percent per year between 2004 and 2013. This decline in incidence is due to improved screening methods. Also, because of better screening, the fiveyear survival rates for patients with colorectal cancer has increased, from 48.6 percent in 1975 to 66.4 percent in 2009. When detected at a localized stage, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. Unfortunately, it is only diagnosed early in 39 percent of patients. It is essential to screen people when they have no symptoms,

Detectable and Preventable as symptoms such as gastrointestinal or rectal bleeding, unexplained abdominal pain or weight loss, persistent change in bowel movements, and bowel obstruction typically occur in advanced disease when it is less amenable to cure. The American Cancer Society recommends beginning screening at age 45. Earlier screening should be done in those with a family history of the disease. For reasons not yet known, the incidence of colorectal cancer is increasing in white males under age 50. Based on current trends, by 2030 the incidence of colorectal cancer is expected to increase by 90 percent in adults ages 20 to 39, and by 28 percent in those 35 to 49. For many years, screening for colorectal cancer relied on the fecal occult blood test, or FOBT. This involves putting a small sample of stool on guaiac paper and adding a drop of “developer” (hydrogen peroxide) on it. The presence of

blood in the sample will turn the paper blue. This is done on three consecutive stool samples over three days on an annual basis. This should not be done at the time of a digital rectal examination or if there is rectal, urinary, or vaginal bleeding. Dietary and medication restrictions are critical to this test. Consuming red meat, which contains hemoglobin, and certain vegetables (radishes, turnips, cauliflower, cucumbers) that contain peroxidase will cause a false-positive test. Vitamin C inhibits heme peroxidase activity and will cause a false-negative test. More recently, fecal immunochemical testing, or FIT, has replaced the FOBT. Media advertising for a FIT called Cologuard is widespread. Most experts recommend FIT every one to two years. It is imperative to follow the directions of the home-based FIT carefully. If the FIT is positive it is important to get a colonoscopy

as quickly as possible, as waiting may give a small, localized tumor time to grow. Colonoscopy is not only the gold standard of colorectal cancer screening, it also can biopsy suspicious lesions and remove polyps. It can be done with or without sedation (although I can’t imagine having one without sedation). In the absence of a positive family history of the disease or a history of removal of pre-cancerous polyps, colonoscopy should be done about every ten years. Complications of colonoscopy are rare, but do include bowel perforation (four in 10,000 cases) and significant intestinal bleeding (eight in 10,000). Colorectal cancer is both detectable and preventable with proper screening. Doctors and patients need to pick a screening method that the patient is comfortable with and will adhere to. Honoring Grief

Each day brings forth a new thought, subject, theme in our lives. Waking up can be blissful, and at other times rather difficult, depending on your current situation. Yesterday, I wanted to write all about gratitude and how it promotes a feeling of joy and happiness. Waking up every day to simply saying thank you. It’s a nice way to start the day. But then I opened my book of poems on this day, “Honoring Grief ” by Pixie Lighthorse. I have never been able to read this in class because it is much too powerful for those people grieving from the loss of their loved ones. Teaching yoga can be fragile and sensitive; however, on the mat is where you can feel safe and comfortable. In stillness and silence, everything comes up, but being there becomes a

sanctuary. As yoga teachers, we hold space for our students, perhaps never fully understanding what they are going through unless they share their stories. On this one particular Sunday, I am aware of one my student’s losing her beautiful mother who lived a wonderful, long life full of love and happiness. She is very sad and I, too, feel her pain and anguish of loss of her first love. I can only offer my hugs, words of compassion and a balanced class. On this day, I choose to go very slow and deliberate. There are many different levels but we are here today for the healing of one’s soul. Loss can be paralyzing and so frightening. In the past week, there has been much loss and I am aware and feel sad. Many people come to their mats to find peace and solace for themselves. Others come for the physical aspect and yet others come for the

spiritual part. There is something for everyone but I believe the most important part is that we are all there for one another. So many stories have come through our doors at Ocean Bliss Yoga and we are simply there to support and honor each person’s path through compassion and support. Listening and being present to the person in front of you is important. You will miss the opportunity to hold space for that person if you don’t take the time to be aware. The following is what I read at the end of my classes this week as we transitioned into autumn. “Honoring Rites of Passage” by Pixie Lighthorse. “We are spilling over with gratitude today for divine support and presence in our lives. We need your energy to move through our transitions. We need creativity and motivation to find the healers who can help us honor ourselves when we change. Help us to

cherish the inevitable changes we face. Guide us in ceremony and celebration when our time comes. Teach us to honor the young ones when their bodies and minds shift and mature. Show us how to midwife the elders and the sick across the bridge and into the next dimension. Hold us close to you when we must leave old ways behind to embrace what is next for us. Remind us that change is not to be feared, but cradled in recognition. Surround us in your warmth and light and usher us into our new stages as precious children of the Earth, who never stop growing and do so because you inspire us to rise.” Grief is a process. Allowing, sitting with it, letting go, holding space - all part of the process. May you be Happy, May you be Healthy, May you be Free of Suffering and May you live with Ease. Ageless Wonder This past Saturday morning, I was taken somewhat aback upon seeing my father's visage staring back at me in the bathroom mirror while I was shaving. I thought "Oh, hell no, that can't be me," and simply assumed that my eyesight must be failing. Now granted, my hair had turned completely white by the time I was 30. At the time it was no big deal as most of the comments regarding my mane were complimentary, such as, "Here comes the silver fox," and the like. I mentioned this concern regarding my eyesight to my beloved Grace, as well as my two daughters, in the hopes that I might receive a comment or two from them to help lift my sagging spirits. Alas, no one in my family was at all surprised at this and they all assured me that, as I fast approach my 70th birthday, my eyesight remains perfect and that, further, I have looked like "Grandpa" for at least the past decade. More than slightly annoyed, I countered with "What happened to the old ‘silver fox?’" I was informed that, unfortunately, as the decades passed and my personal wealth in-

The Rockaway Times creased along with my waistline (silver in the hair, gold in the teeth, crystals in the kidney, sugar in the blood, iron in the arteries, lead in the butt and an accompanying and almost inexhaustible supply of natural gas), I should gracefully accept the fact that the "silver fox" appellation was an endangered term for some time and now has gone extinct, being replaced with more age appropriate comparisons with Santa Claus! Not to be outdone, I reminded my clan that "You are only as old as you feel and I feel like I am still in my 40s!" It was quickly brought to my attention that I did not rely on a walking cane to travel about in my 40s and further, that they found it somewhat unsettling that I have named my cane, "Ivan." Granted, I had to admit that of course, age is just a number. Some people are physically and/or mentally younger than their years and some are older and perhaps, a lot of my get up and go, may have got up and gone, but my mind is still as sharp as a tack. Besides, as I get older, I find I am much more patient than I had been in my younger days and possessed with a clear conscience. My beloved Grace (aka: she who must be obeyed) cautioned that I was obviously confusing patience with not caring anymore and that as far as a clear conscience was concerned, I should write that off to a bad memory. Obviously, I would be receiving no aid and comfort from my family in this matter so I returned to the bathroom to shower. After washing my scalp with a color enhancing shampoo to remove a dull yellow sheen that plagues my otherwise white hair, I dressed and politely inquired if anyone would be so kind as to drive me and "Ivan" up to Shad Creek Road to visit the VFW where I could spend a few hours among friends who would not be so quick Continued on page 29

Page 33 Heat oven to 375 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, oil and 2 tablespoons water. Add the lentils, red onion, spinach and roasted red pepper. Mix to combine. Fold in the cheese. Add the falafel mix and stir to combine. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking sheet and shape into a 9 x 3-1/2” loaf. Bake until the internal temperature registers 150 degrees, 30 – 35 minutes. Let rest 5 minutes before slicing.

On Friday, September 13, officers from the 100th Precinct were responding to a 911 call for help inside NYCHA development, Carleton Manor, just before 7 a.m., when they came out to find a shocking surprise—a brick to the windshield of their police vehicle.

Fortunately, there were no officers in the vehicle at the time of the incident, so there were no injuries. The NYPD has a complaint report on file for the incident and is continuing to investigate. No arrests have been made at this time.

Schumer Urges Study Approval Gen. Todd T. Semonite, commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, signed the Chief’s Report for the Hurricane Sandy Reformulation Study. The report will be submitted to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, Ricky Dale James, for final approval. Senator Charles Schumer followed with a letter to James urging him to approve the report in an expeditious manner. Citing the damage done by Hurricane Sandy and the ongoing challenge of coastal protection, Schumer wrote, “The need for a comprehensive, federally-funded resiliency project remains. The Reformulation Study will fill that need by outlining the necessary longterm solutions for erosion control and coastal protection that will protect our most vulnerable communities for years to come.” In 2018, eleven blocks of beach were closed for the summer season because of beach

erosion, causing havoc among merchants and beach-goers. In April of this year, a temporary solution was offered with 348,000 cubic yards of sand being poured onto the beaches allowing the merchants and summer crowds to enjoy the 2019 summer season. “The U.S. Army Corps has spent several years devoting its immense resources and expertise to writing this report,” Schumer added. “Now that we have the recommendations we need to make the Rockaway Peninsula and Jamaica Bay more resilient, I urge you to work as quickly as possible to provide your approval for the Sandy Reformulation Study so that construction plans can move forward as soon as possible.” With a speedy approval, jetty construction can begin by year end. AOH Donates Irish Fest Proceeds

cal parishes and organizations. The Hibernians welcomed St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Parish Pastor Richard Ahlmeyer to their meeting and presented him with the li-

As a special bonus, Rockaway’s own Indaculture will perform at 8 p.m. and DJs at Work will be on hand to entertain throughout the night. This not-to-be-missed event comes on the heels of Holy Happy Hour in August where the three amigos—Fr.

Jomar— served spirits and helped those who attended leave “spiritually fulfilled.” Well, these three are at it again, now threatening to dress up in custom-made lederhosen and dance with the professionals. Clearly, it’s shaping up to be another one for the record books! Help for Hurricane Dorian Victims Hurricane Dorian decimated the northern islands of the Bahamas. With many displaced from their homes, the recovery begins. There are some ways to help locally. Councilman Donovan Richards is leading a collection for those in the Bahamas. His office is collecting hygiene and toiletry items such as toothpaste and tissues, cleaning supplies such as bleach and mops, first aid items such as bandaids and gauze, and other items including water, non-perishable food, blankets, flashlights, batteries, utensils, bags and more.
