While it's always sad for Rockaway to part with summer, I think most people are ready to turn up, pay homage to the sea, and put a glittery exclamation point on the muggy summer of 2018! This Saturday, it's time for the fourth annual Poseidon’s Parade, and it looks to be a great one. The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, coming off yet another Coney Island Mermaid Parade win, has been working hard to facilitate Rockaway’s annual art stroll on the boards. The event will kick off this Saturday, September 22, at high noon on the boardwalk at Beach 106th Street. Caracas will be cranking out signature dishes and drinks for the costumed nautical nutjobs as they put some last minute touches on their costumes and floats. Paraders will be treated to the music of The BEasy Band, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Spectators will line the boardwalk

from Beach 106th to Beach 94th to soak in the costumes, dances, pets, floats, and music that this yearly event brings to the rock. Rockaway will come alive one last time in celebration of Poseidon and another magical summer! I tried to sit down with the Queen Mermaid, Casey Butler, who is ready to facilitate the parade even while carrying a mer-child. She was putting some final touches on the coveted trophies when the Rockaway Brigade Communications Director handed me a press release and asked me to leave: “This year we are awarding trophies in the following categories: ‘Best Adult Group,’ ‘Best Float,’ ‘Best Musical Group,’ ‘Best Pet,’ ‘Best Recycled Costume,’ ‘Best Bar or Restaurant,’ ‘Best Bicycle,’ ‘Best Children’s Group,’ ‘Best Wagon or Baby Carriage,’ and the highly competitive ‘Best Block.’ The judges have been handpicked using our secret social formula, and the brigade is ready!�

I also contacted Brigade Captain Geoff Rawling, whose amazing recreation of Whalemenia led the brigade to its eighth Mermaid Parade win. He told me that Whalemenia will be at the parade. I tried to get more details, but his goons, Jerry and Tony, kicked me out of their shady car lot. I guess there's no time for the media when there's a parade to run! As usual, MC Jimmy Dowd, the judges, and DJ Kuff Daddy Dollars will all be in rare form at the end of the parade at the plaza on Beach 94th Street. This family-friendly freefor-all is an amazing display of Rockaway’s creativity. The organizers want people to be able to express themselves, enjoy themselves, and embrace the amazingly creative community that Rockaway is blossoming into. There will be tons of after-parties and musical acts from Solshyne at Low Tide Bar to Otis Day and the Knights at Rustwoods. Tell all your friends from out of town

to come to the rock for one more bash! The brigade asked me to remind everyone to register online at Poseidonsparade.com before Saturday. There will also be a registration table at Caracas at 10 a.m. for last-minute mermaids. The Brigade sent one final press release: “We would like to thank everyone who has worked hard to make this parade a hit. Doh! A Deer?

DEAD AND LIVE DEER FOUND ON THE PENINSULA By Katie McFadden

Oh deer. Rockaway has seen its fair share of wildlife, both dead and alive, wash up on its beaches, but usually they’re creatures that live in the ocean. So it was quite the shock to receive a call about a deer that washed up dead on Beach 96th Street. Even stranger—it wasn’t the only one spotted on the peninsula on Monday, September 17. Earlier that day, another deer was spotted running around State Road near Roxbury, sparking the question— what the buck? It was a seemingly normal late afternoon fishing session for John Orgera, until about 5 p.m., when he spotted something—fishy. “I was out here fishing and coincidentally, I see something floating and right away my stomach turned. I thought it was the kid,” Orgera said, referring to Lamine Sarr, a 17-year-old who drowned

late Saturday afternoon. At the time, the search was still underway for Sarr’s body. “So I called 911 and I’m on the phone with them and I’m looking out at the water and I’m like, wait a minute, it looks like a deer,” Orgera said. As not only a fisherman,

but also a hunter, who even has a deer tattoo on his leg, Orgera would know. He waded into the water and pulled the dead animal—an 8-point whitetail buck—onto the beach. Shortly after, police responded, followed by members of the Parks Department to determine how to remove the unique find that left even the Parks Department staff stumped. “I’ve seen whales, dolphins and seals out here, but never anything like this,” one Parks staffer said. Shortly after, Parks Department staff removed the animal. While the incident of a dead deer washing up on a beach in Rockaway seemed strange in itself, that wasn’t the first one spotted on the peninsula on Monday. In the morning, Frederick Sebade, of Rockaway Point, spotted a doe along State Road near Roxbury. Sebade and his daughter, Julianna, followed the animal as it dotted into the NYPD’s Counterterror-

DOH! A DEER?

Continued from Page 5 deer that lacked antlers, unlike the one that washed up later in Rockaway Beach. Deer are often found in rural areas, and even in parts of New York City, like Staten Island and parts of the Bronx, but for two to be seen on a beach peninsula like Rockaway, is a rarity. “Nobody alive has ever seen a deer in Rockaway,” Sebade said. So where did they possibly come from? We reached out to local organizations like NYC Parks, National Park Service and the Department of Environmental Conservation for some insight. Richard Simon of NYC Parks' Wildlife Unit said, "Established populations of white-tailed deer can be found on Staten Island and in parts of Long Island. It is possible the deer came from one of these locations, but we cannot say for certain. Deer are driven by their basic instincts to survive, to find food and mates. They are also skittish animals that may have taken to the water to escape a

threat and ended up far from home. We cannot say for sure." A representative from the DEC reiterated that the deer may have come from Staten Island or Long Island. It may be believable that the deer on Beach 96th Street drowned at some point, because deer are not typically thought of as water animals, but many may be surprised to learn that deer can indeed swim, and quite well. Deer are strong swimmers, swimming at a rate of up to 13 miles per hour. Deer are often found crossing bodies of water, and it is believed this is how deer first got to Staten Island. Deer have been seen, and even recorded, swimming from New Jersey to Staten Island. Over the years, the numbers grew and there are now so many deer in Staten Island that efforts have been made to curb the population. With deer causing vehicle collisions and carrying tick-borne illnesses, and with no natural predators on Staten Island, unique efforts have been carried out to reduce the number of deer in the area.

Hunting anywhere in New York City is illegal, so in May 2016, the City launched a deer impact management plan that included sterilizing male deer on Staten Island. By March 2018, 1,154 vasectomies were performed on deer in the area. Research showed that the effort

was a success as Staten Island’s deer population dropped by eight percent, from 2,053 in 2017, to 1,884 in 2018. It is not clear if this population reduction has any connection to why deer are traveling to areas that they’re not typically seen, like the beach. However, Rockaway isn’t the only beach that deer have visited recently. On August 17, beachgoers were shocked when a whitetailed deer swam right up onto the beach at Coney Island and started wandering around the beach and boardwalk. In past incidences of deer popping up in places they’re not known in, like Brooklyn and Manhattan, some have been relocated to places upstate or back to Staten Island, and in some instances, they were left alone. It is not clear if any agency located the deer in Roxbury or what will be done with it. In the meantime, the public is advised to not feed any deer, as it is illegal, and to keep a safe distance. You may also want to keep an eye out while driving.

A suspect has been arrested for setting the fire. ***** So what does the City’s Public Advocate do exactly? Well, officially, nothing. They are supposed to be watchdogs, keeping an eye on what the rest of the government is doing and they’re supposed to, uhm, advocate on behalf of the citizens. Tish James, is the current Public Advocate who will be leaving the job once she becomes the Attorney General for New York State. That is, if she wins the general election in November, which she’s highly likely to do. In the primary race, she sided up to Governor Cuomo. She basically ran as the establishment candidate. So, you know what that meant? She largely kept quiet about the miserable state of the subway. Because, you know, a lot of that falls on Cuomo. A Public Advocate silent on the horrific state of the subways.

Some advocating, huh? ***** Which agency is the best? On Saturday, September 22, find out as the FDNY, NYPD, State Police, Park Police and others face off in America's pastime, baseball. Root on your favorite team between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. and the Fort Tilden Drill Grounds. ***** This was a new one. The Marine Parkway Bridge was closed for overnight repairs last week, so going through Broad Channel and over the Cross Bay Bridge was the slightly annoying option in the early morning. Drivers heading to Rockaway, who just wanted to get home, found themselves unable to get over the Cross Bay because a house was blocking the road. Yes, a house. A pre-fab building was being installed and it took crews a while to put it in place and clear the road. ***** That was a new one but nothing compared to anoth-

er new one. A deer, yes, like Bambi, was found dead on the beach on Monday. And another one was found alive by State Road near Roxbury. Deer may be attractive animals but not so much in Staten Island, and parts of Long Island and New Jersey where the deer population is a huge problem. How the deer wound up on the beach is still a mystery. But deer, by the way, are strong swimmers and have been known to venture. ***** Yes, your pain is shared. The lights on Flatbush Avenue from the bridge to the Belt Parkway are causing traffic tie-ups in the morning. DOT says it’s aware and is trying to fix things. ***** We feel for those in the Carolinas suffering because of Hurricane Florence. From experience, we cannot recommend donating to the Red Cross. Team Rubicon and local groups who step forward to help are better choices.

Cheers to the Heerans

Congratulations to William and Sean Heeran for both being promoted in the FDNY on Friday, September 14. Both brothers joined the FDNY after their brother, Charlie Heeran, was killed in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. William was promoted to Lieutenant and Sean was promoted to Captain at the FDNY Officers Promotion Ceremony in Brooklyn on Friday. “I used to work on Wall Street. I was down there when

the planes hit the towers. My brother worked in finance and was killed in the attack. During that time I saw the FDNY working and that was part of the reason I decided to join the Department in 2003. It’s a bittersweet moment to get promoted, but it has been great and I am looking forward to learning a lot,” William Heeran told the FDNY. “My father is retired Firefighter Bernard Heeran, FDNY Engine Company 281, so the Department is in our family,” Sean Heeran said. “A lot changed when my brother was killed during the attacks on 9/11. I felt like joining this Department was something I had to do. Being promoted today is very exciting. I love this job and I want to be better and keep learning.”

CB14’S PARKS COMMITTEE APPROVES 10 NEW PROJECTS By Katie McFadden

Lots of exciting things will be coming in the years ahead as the Parks Department builds new park areas and rebuilds old ones on the beach and bay sides of the peninsula. But as with anything, those projects must go through an approval process, and on Monday, September 16, it was the public and Community Board 14’s Parks and Public Safety Committee that got a say in some final designs of various Parks capital projects. Dozens of CB14 members, Parks employees, and members of the public gathered at Martin de Porres High School on Monday to see some final designs of 10 different Parks capital projects and provide input. However, the meeting started with some well-deserved thanks and a cake for Portia Dyrenforth, the now former Rockaway Administrator for the Parks Department, as she has moved on to a new position with Parks. As the guests enjoyed cake, various project managers presented the designs for the capital projects that included a Shore Front Parkway Obstacle Course, a Beach 98th Street Playground, the Beach 94th Performance Space, a Shore Front Parkway Labyrinth, a Shore Front Parkway Dog Park, a Shore Front Parkway Multi Purpose Area, new construction of the Beach 59th Street Playground, Boardwalk Access Ramps at Beach 24th and Beach 25th Streets, a redesigned Broad Channel Park and the new Bay Breeze Park and Kayak Launch on the bay at Beach 88th Street. Most of the projects are funded by leftover FEMA money, but are additionally funded by money acquired by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and City Council. The project managers briefly explained each project and then the floor was opened for the public to visit stations with each project, so that they could provide feedback. After the public had a chance to critique each project, the project managers went over the input and held an open discussion which resulted in motions made to ap-

prove each project, many with amendments to the original plans. First up for discussion was the Shore Front Obstacle Course. This area, located next to the boardwalk at Beach 101st and 102nd Street will have active and passive spaces. It includes a pickleball court, tables and benches, an obstacle course that gives a full body workout with elements such as ropes courses, trees for shading and other plantings. The Parks Committee made a motion to accept the project, but with ribbon-style bike racks instead of round ones, plus additional seating. The motion was approved unanimously. The Beach 98th Playground has different elevations, kids play areas with swings, slides and climbing elements and water play areas. The plan included limited lighting, with the assumption that the boardwalk lights would be enough to keep the playground illuminated, however this sparked concern. After some discussion, a motion was made to approve the project with the condition that Parks considers adding more lighting within the park, and that the design of the bike racks be changed. The motion was unanimously accepted. The Rockaway Performance Space at Beach 94th includes a stage, and three different shells or arches that provide shade, with the highest being 36 feet. The design was well received, but some requested that color elements be added such as colored LED lighting and markings made on staircases to advise people not to sit on them. With these conditions, the project was approved unanimously. The Shore Front Parkway Labyrinth from Beach 92nd to Beach 94th Street is meant to be a quiet area where people can walk around and reflect or meditate. It was well received, but some requested that the color of the labyrinth area be changed to something lighter and that more bike racks be added. With these conditions, the project was approved. Park planned for Beach 90th Street includes large and small dog areas with dog exercise elements. There are also trash receptacles, dog waste bag dispensers, a storage container and chain-link fencing to prevent pets from running out. The project was accepted as is. The Multi Purpose area from Beach 77th to Beach 81st Street includes active and passive recreational space for intergenerational use. It is bordered by handball and basketball courts, but inside will be various lawn spaces, volleyball courts with terraced seating to view matches, adult fitness tools, shade structures and more. With a lot of lawn space, concerns were raised about maintaining the grass. A motion was made to accept the project with the conditions that more bike racks be added, ping pong table are added, watering options for irrigation are incorporated, additional elements are added for seniors, and barriers are added so that children don’t run into the street. The motion was accepted. The Beach 59th Playground is planned to be reconstructed with new slides, play equipment, handball courts and swings, plus a shower feature that will spray water up from the ground. Concerns were made about low fencing, as unsafe incidents have been reported in this area. A motion was made to accept the project, but to keep the fencing height the same as it currently is, to add two handicapped swings, to provide additional shade, to change benches around the handball courts to backless benches and to make plastic slides instead of metal. The motion with these conditions was accepted unanimously. The project to add boardwalk access ramps to Beach 24th and 25th Streets, where temporary ramps are currently located, had no issues and was accepted unanimously. The reconstructed Broad Channel Park will include reconstructed walkways and basketball courts, sports areas like tennis courts and a roller hockey rink, currently under con-

struction, a space for parallel parking, new game tables and new plantings. A motion was made to accept the park with the conditions that bike racks be included, a flagpole that has caused issues be eliminated, and benches toward the back of the park are moved so that no shady activities occur near them. The motion was accepted. The most controversial project was saved for last, as there was a lot of feedback on Bay Breeze Park. This park, located on the bay and Beach 88th Street, includes a kayak launch, seating areas with shade by trees, a small play area with wooden, natural play structures, a lawn space and a salt marsh area, and a metal structure to house about 36 kayaks. The major concern with this plan was that it doesn’t include any restrooms in an area where there are no public restrooms nearby. Parks cited extremely high costs for the bathrooms that would take away from other elements of the park, and said a bathroom could be added at a later time when more funding is available. Another concern was the size of the boathouse. Rick Horan, who operates the current Community Boathouse, requested that it be made bigger to fit larger watercrafts. The salt marsh element was also a major concern as it could serve as a breeding ground for mosquitos. A motion was made to accept the park, with the conditions that the salt marsh be eliminated and replaced with native plantings that attract butterflies and birds, the playground area be made larger, picnic benches be eliminated, a shorter kayak path to the bay be added, the kayak storage area is made larger and bike racks are added. The motion was approved. Discussions about adding a bathroom to the park will take place once costs are provided and the funding is made available. With all of the projects approved, the planning process can now move forward and proper permits can be filed. Rockaway won’t see most of the projects come to fruition until 2020.

For Far Rockaway High School (FRHS) alumni sisters, Carole Barna Scherker and Barbara Barna Brown, what started out as plans to return to their beloved childhood Wavecrest Gardens neighborhood to celebrate Carole’s 75th birthday, speedily evolved into the first-ever FRHS Reunion hosted on the beach, and the response they have received has been astounding. The FRHS Beach Reunion, hosted for classes 1950 through 1978, will be on Saturday, September 29 at the DredSurfer Grill Beach 17th Concession, just steps away from the Wavecrest Gardens apartment the sisters grew up in the 1950s. Scherker, (FRHS class of 1961), said the idea came about back in May, when she was thinking about how to momentously celebrate her 75th birthday with old friends, neighbors and classmates. “My sister and I have both lived out of the state for decades, and wanted to come back to Far Rockaway to celebrate our beloved beach, new boardwalk, old friends and memories, and of course, my birthday. Then it hit me, why not host a high school reunion right on the beach? Most of the previous high school reunions we attended were held in fancy halls outside of Rockaway, and were very expensive. I wanted to host something at a low cost, instead of a big-to-do at a fancy corporate hotel or restaurant. DredSurfer Grill is the perfect place to celebrate with fellow alumni that doesn't break the bank, while also supporting a terrific local business on the boardwalk. Plus, what better venue to celebrate our Far Rockaway memories than on the beach?” Scherker said. Brown (FRHS class of 1963) jumped right on board, and

the ideas just escalated. “This has just been so overwhelming, and we are so excited. I’m an advocate for sustainable aging, and think this is the perfect avenue for us to get together in a habitat we all know and love — the beach. Age is irrelevant when you're looking at the ocean, breathing in the ocean air, and laughing with old friends,” Barbara said. According to Brown, after launching the Facebook page just a mere few months ago, folks from all over the country came crawling out of the woodwork, posting old class photos, childhood memories of the beach, and expressing their excitement to share their old memories of Far Rockaway. The itinerary for the day includes: At 9:30 am. - A prelunch morning Memorial Walk and name-reading of alumni who have passed; At noon - A budget-friendly FRHS beach reunion lunch at the DredSurfer Grill on the boardwalk at Beach 17th Street for FRHS classes 1950 through 1978. Note that sign-in begins at 11 a.m. Pre-registration suggested to assure a reserved table with your class and the availability of preferred menu items. Class table assignments will be sent by email. Charles Jacobs, proprietor of DredSurfer, contributed a live band playing 1950s and 60s music, plus there will be a tribute to folksinger/songwriter, Phil Ochs. Also, attendees will have an opportunity to donate to one of the designated causes of the FRHS Beach Reunion: Suicide Prevention, Autism, Alzheimer’s Research and Rockaway Animal Rescue. Additionally, Scherker, Brown and their brother, Michael (FRHS class of 1965), granted permission to copy their father, Tony Barna’s 1968 oil painting of the Wavecrest beach and boardwalk, in memory of their brother, Jimmy Barna (FRHS class of 1962). Beach Reunion's designated charities, as well as to FRHS alumni who through the efforts of fellow alumni, Alan Silverstein, donate towards the GoFundMe page he set up to offset travel and accommodation costs for 79-year-old Carol Marston, a long-time supporter of FRHS alumni, to fulfill her dream of attending the reunion, and seeing her childhood Far Rockaway friends. Scherker said that she came up with the idea of the Memorial Walk/Name-Reading to commemorate the lives of those who have passed, and to make sure their memory lives on. “We lost a lot of boys in the Vietnam War, and we wanted to memorialize their lives and childhood memories of them on the beach.” For both Scherker and Brown, their childhood in Wavecrest Gardens is some-

thing they will always treasure, and to host their reunion at the nearby beach is something they only dreamed about. “Wavecrest was such a unique community. As kids, every season was beach season. Even when it was cold, we enjoyed playing on the sand in the snow, riding our bikes, and even just playing in the buildings’ hallways. Carole lives in California and I live in Ohio, but Far Rockaway never left our blood. The smell of the ocean, sound of the waves crashing, and the feeling of Rockaway sand between our toes — can never be erased, much less replaced. Community Mourns After Local Teen Drowns By Katie McFadden

They were left by friends, family and fellow students at Channel

noon as the search was underway for their classmate’s body. By the next morning, the call came in that a body was found in the water at Beach 98th Street. Lamine Sarr’s grieving family members were called to identify the body. It was him. Sarr, a senior at CVSR, was described as a good, loving and caring person, who had a good fashion sense and aspirations of being a model. On Saturday, he and two other friends took a break from playing video games and opted to spend some time outdoors, so they went to the beach. The waters proved to be too strong and soon the boys needed help, but Sarr was nowhere to be found. The other boys were rescued and emergency services responded at around 5 p.m. to conduct a massive search for Sarr for several hours, but as the night grew dark, their search came to an end. Sarr’s body was recov-

ered on the morning of Tuesday, September 18. Sarr’s family moved to the U.S. 11 years ago, but they plan to send the body of Sarr back to their hometown of Foundiougne in Senegal for burial. To help the family with the costs, a GoFundMe fundraising campaign has been set up by one of Sarr’s cousins. As we go to press, more than $8,500 of the $10,000 goal was raised. Donations can be made at www. gofundme.com/fly-lamineback-to-senegal. On Friday, September 21, the Ocean Bay Community Center (57-10 Beach Chan-

nel Drive) is hosting a celebration of Sarr’s life from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome to attend. This past weekend, the first without lifeguards on duty since the season came to an end, was marred with rescues as people took advantage of the warm weather amidst stormy seas. Several people were rescued by surfers and emergency personnel over the weekend. As a reminder, lifeguards are no longer on duty, and people are advised to avoid going into the water. The ocean, though beautiful, is also powerful. Rest in peace, Lamine.

four-hour morning event has made it impossible to properly raise funds and donations that would be given to the Rockaway Special Athletes. It is quite disheartening how this community asset is being operated when it comes to having community organizations attempt to do events there. I really do not understand Aviator’s community philosophy when it comes to working with community organizations who wish to hold events at this course. Especially, for not-for-profit groups looking to do fundraising events. We were even willing to pay the increased fee per golfer notwithstanding the fact that the course is in terrible condition. But this was not enough. This annual event was always enjoyed by all and it’s quite sad that Aviator‘s corporate greed has derailed such a wonderful and worthy event for our community’s Special Athletes. We are in the process of coming up with other fundraising ideas to do for the Special Athletes and will keep you apprised of any developments. Our apologies to all who were looking forward to this event, but it was out of our control. Hurricane Florence arrived late last week, leaving behind destruction that those in Rockaway are all-too-familiar with since Superstorm Sandy. So locals know that those in the Carolinas are in need of help. Different local initiatives to help victims have already begun. The Carolinas and parts of Virginia are feeling the effects of Florence. The storm left several areas heavily flooded and caused the death of 34 people. Now the

recovery process begins. The Breezy Point-based Comfort Crew, which often rallies to collect supplies and gift cards for those affected by disasters, is doing it once again. Additionally, Senator Joseph Addabbo has begun a supply drive for victims in North Carolina. Addabbo recently connected with Senator Bill Rabon of North Carolina to see what kind of help is needed after the storm. Rabon, who is also a veterinarian, saw his office and his house destroyed. However, those across his district, which includes Brunswick, Bladen, New Hanover, and Pender Counties, are also in need of help. “After Sandy came and left parts of my district in despair, we quickly went to work trying to get things back to normal. However, we didn’t do it alone,” Addabbo said. “We were supported by communities and people from outside of New York. I wanted to repay the assistance my district received after Sandy by helping others get through their tough situation in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.” As a response, Addabbo is kicking off a supply drive for the victims of Hurricane Florence. For some, sailing might seem just a fusion of luxury and adventure, but after The RT got the opportunity to sail with Breezy

A powerboat will drive you from dock to destination, but on a sailboat, you are dependent on the breeze, the oxygen that controls and propels the speed; and the ocean, the blood that buoys the boat with life.

Hauck, who grew up riding on boats and owned a variety of them throughout his life, even living on one after Hurricane Sandy destroyed his home, said though sailing is very challenging, he loves it. “I have friends who joke that now I have a sailboat, I switched teams. “My truism is that it’s better to be at the dock wishing you were sailing, than to be sailing, wish-

ing you were at the dock. Sailing is a completely different experience, because you are so dependent on the forces of nature. The wind force and direction; the tide; sand bars, that if you get stuck, could keep you waiting for a six-hour tide cycle; and other boats on the water — you have to be in tune and sensitive to it all,” Hauck said. Hauck is also an avid fisherman. He said on the bay, blue fish, porgies, black fish and stripe bass, are all readily available, but as the water temperature changes, so does the catch. “It’s all about being patient and sensitive to what the waters provide. I also troll for fish (a method of fishing where fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water) on my sailboat, and I get amazing catch. Even with all his years of experience, Hauck is pursuing his dream of getting a degree in Maritime Technology at Kingsborough Community College. “Years ago, I thought that by the age of 21, I would have my captain’s license, but life happens. However, now that I have time on my hands, instead of sitting around the house, I’m fulfilling one of my goals, and it’s something that I love,” Hauck said. Born and raised in Rockaway, Pat Butera, at just age 25, might seem like a sea baby. However, don’t be fooled. Butera owns his own fishing charter, Forever Two Worlds, and judging from his prized catches, and prowess navigating his boat, he’s no amateur. “I was born in Neponsit, 10 houses away from the ocean. Since I was five, I was in the water. From competitive swimming, surfing as a grom (a young participant in extreme sports, including surfing), boating and

fishing, I was exposed to a lot, and always loved it. I feel so blessed to be able to pay the bills from what I love to do — boating and fishing,” Butera said. At just 22 years old, Butera got his own boat, received his Captain’s license and launched his fishing charter business. Butera’s 35-foot Duffy is also called, Forever Two Worlds. “I named both my boat and charter, Forever, Two Worlds, because being able to enjoy ocean life in NYC, is like being in two worlds. People don’t realize it, until they see and experience it for themselves,” he said.

Butera believes that people will be amazed by what NYC waters have to offer for fishing. “Fishing for stripe bass is one of the best here in NYC. The season for stripe bass kicks off in spring, wanes a bit, then gets alive again in fall. Porgies, fluke, and blue fish are also great here. But I love to go after the really big guns,” Butera said. Butera takes his charter for inshore and offshore shark fishing. And when he’s with his friends, he fishes for blue-fin tuna, and even boasts catching a 700-pound lovely. “Boating is my sanity, and I love the chal-

lenge. However, I love exposing people new to fishing and boating. They come back with an amazing experience, and get inspired to pursue it on their own. For me, that’s the most satisfying aspect of running my own charter, besides just being in my favorite space — on my boat in the water,” he said. Butera’s Forever Two Worlds Fishing Vessel is located in the Vernam Basin Marina in Arverne. The price of the fishing charter includes all bait and tackle. Charters can be booked daily for half-day, full-day, or night fishing trips. Groups of up to six people are welcome. During inshore trips, there are several species of fish targeted according to the season, such as stripe bass. For offshore trips, tuna, swordfish, mahi, marlin, and sharks are on the menu. Ulrich Announces Broad Channel Beautification Project Broad Channel is about to get a bit more beautiful. On Friday, September 14, Councilman Eric Ulrich, along with Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) Executive Director Susan Lacerte, QBG Director of Education Rebecca Wolf and Broad Channel Civic Association President Dan Mundy, revealed a new beautification project in Broad Channel slated for the fall. Funded by Ulrich, the $30,000 initiative will install 12 planters along the mediums of Cross Bay Boulevard. The project will focus on the medians near the entrance into Broad Channel at 20th Road and is scheduled to be completed in October. "We've seen a remarkable insurgence of rebuilding and resiliency, and now we're getting into beautification. This is the first installment in our series of initiatives to beautify Cross Bay Boulevard and we wanted

to bring it to Broad Channel first," Councilman Eric Ulrich said. "It's a community that will appreciate this and really needs this. It's in between Rockaway and Howard Beach, and tens of thousands of cars, trucks and buses drive down Cross Bay Boulevard every single day. We want this to be

FAR ROCK LIBRARY CLOSING TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW ONE Things are moving forward on the future Far Rockaway Community Library. However, that means the current library will have to close in the meantime. Starting Saturday, September 29, the Far Rockaway Community Library, located at 1637 Central Avenue, will be closed, in preparation for the construction of a new building, according to Councilman Donovan Richards’ office. Over the next three years, the current library will be demolished and replaced with a stateof-the-art, two-story structure, which will double the size of the existing library to meet the information and learning needs of the neighborhood. During the closure, the branch will move into a tempo-

rary location which is tentatively scheduled to open on Monday, October 22 at 1003 Beach 20th Street, adjacent to the Far Rockaway Teen Center. “The Queens Library apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates your patience as they continue to work to make improvements to their libraries,” an announcement by Richards read.

ARMY CORPS TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS ON NEW REPORT

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released its updated study on Rockaway last month and now they’ve announced public meetings to discuss the report. The meetings will be held on Thursday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 10. USACE, in cooperation with the non-federal and local sponsors, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the City of New York, respectively, will be holding public meetings to provide study information and solicit comments on the Revised Draft Hurricane Sandy General Reevaluation Report (HSGRR), Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and General Conformity (GC) Determination which supports the draft Statement of Conformity (dSOC) for the Atlantic Coast of New York, East Rockaway Inlet to Rockaway Inlet, and Jamaica Bay Reformulation Study. The Revised Draft HSGRR incorporates comments received on the 2016 Draft HSGRR and is updated to reflect the subsequent changes to the Recommend Plan for addressing coastal storm risk for the communities surrounding Jamaica Bay and along the Atlantic Shorefront of

the Rockaway peninsula. Bones About It

Our bones are constantly being broken down and rebuilt. This process is called remodeling. As we age, in many people, the rate of bone breakdown eventually exceeds the rate of bone creation. This causes a condition called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition with severely low bone mineral density (BMD). People with osteoporosis are much more likely to have bone fractures, especially after a trauma like a fall. The two most common osteoporosis-related fractures are hip fractures and spinal compression fractures. Spinal compression fractures cause back pain that may last for months and, if multiple spinal

fractures occur, may lead to curvature of the spine which causes a stooped posture. Hip fractures may lead to lifelong problems such as disability, chronic pain, and decreased quality of life. In addition, the rate of death within 12 months of a hip fracture is quite high. In women, the decrease in estrogen levels that occurs during menopause leads to an increased rate of bone breakdown. For this reason, post-menopausal women have a greater risk of osteoporosis as opposed to men, and women who have not yet reached menopause. Other risk factors for osteoporosis include smoking, excess alcohol use, low body

weight, and a history of a parent with a hip fracture. Recently, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) published a study that made recommendation for screening people for osteoporosis. The USPSTF puts out screening recommendations for various diseases and conditions. You may recall that not too long ago, I wrote a column about the USPSTF recommendations for screening men for prostate cancer, (they recommended that Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) screenings should not be done at all in most men). The most common screening test for osteoporosis is a special type of x-ray test that measured bone mineral density. This test is called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, or DEXA for short. DEXA testing usually looks at “central� bones, usually the hip and spine. Peripheral DEXA tests that look at the forearm or heel are also done, however central bone testing is thought to be superior to peripheral. The USPSTF recommendations for osteoporosis screening applies to adults who do not have a history

of fractures, do not have an increased risk of falls, do not have other conditions that may cause osteoporosis (i.e. thyroid disease), and are not taking medications that may cause osteoporosis (i.e. prednisone and other steroids). The USPSTF recommendations are as follows: all women 65 and older should be screened and women younger than 65 with risk factors (smoking, excess alcohol intake, low body weight, and a parent with a history of a hip fracture) should be screened. Again, all women selected for screening should be post-menopausal. The USPSTF did not make a screening recommendation for men because there is insufficient evidence for screening men. DEXA screening has few, if any, harms and is non-invasive and painless. confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” (Lao Tzu) The first kindness is to oneself. Why are we sometimes so hard on ourselves? There really is no reason for it. Approach your thoughts and feelings with a softness, a kindness, and you will begin to feel less agitated and be more at ease. The second kindness is to all living beings. Once there is that feeling of ease within you, there is no other way than to be kind, not only doing “acts of kindness,” but being kind. Rather than reacting abruptly to something that comes up, causing the other person to be on guard and in defensive mode, think first about trying to work it out in a kind way. Passing someone on your way out of a store as they’re coming in, smile as you hold the door and acknowledge that there is another being crossing your path.

The Rockaway Times The inner feelings of kindness that radiate outward create a harmony around each of us. Think of it as an energy field. Imagine there is energy coming forth from your smile, which creates a sort of sphere of good, kind energy. Imagine all of the spheres crossing paths with all of the smiles and kindness! Remember, though, that ease has to come from within. And we must stop and renew, restore and rejuvenate. There is no time? It’s all how we look at it. We seem to accomplish what we deem important on a daily basis, so if we deem important to refresh every day so that we can feel peace, then, we will radiate kindness. You can be certain that everyone will benefit. Center in, think positive, kind thoughts. Say positive, kind words. Do positive, kind deeds. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. The Literary Chick recently spoke with Stefan Kiesbye, author of Berlingeles. TLC: Berlingeles is quite a different ride than your German gothic tales. Cyberpunk, apocalyptic, dystopian, what would you categorize it as? SK: The book is all that, but those categories are usually hindsight, once you think about marketing

the book. And usually it’s your publisher who puts the book into a category to maximize sales. I started with K., who wants to stay alive to be reunited with his erstwhile lover, B., and the apocalyptic and dystopian developed because I was trying to figure out where K. would live, and what I thought might happen to Los Angeles in the future. I’m a pessimist — we’re not confronting the great problems of our time, from environmental disasters to a reemergence of the right, racism, and discrimination; we’re hiding. Berlingeles gives that pessimism a shape. TLC: What comparable trauma do you see with the culture or populace of Berlin and Los Angeles that would give you the idea to create a story about a civil war and a wall in Los Angeles? SK: Los Angeles is not enclosed by a wall, but by the desert. It’s a city that shouldn’t “be there.” It’s the capital of gated communities, of people moving behind walls to feel safe. It’s money that buys you

a spot in a small enclave of people with similar incomes. The better the money, the higher the wall. Berlin was too important to be abandoned by the West. What made you create and employ these characters to tell it? SK: I love that none of the characters ‘exist.’ They appear in public, and yet they don’t have a public life. Sophie, the prostitute, is being chauffeured through the city, only to be seen in confined spaces. Gaz, the young thug, is in love with the Maze and the Tunnel, and only underground, away from prying eyes, does he feel like himself. In order to be successful at robbing and even killing people, he needs to be invisible. The most extreme case is Sophie’s grandmother Ida, who is long dead, but still bosses her granddaughter around. None

of the characters own their identity, and yet their lives continue and expand and collide. TLC: In the story, a band released an album, Berlingeles, linking the two cities. How would you imagine this album to sound? SK: If the Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Einstürzende Neubauten, Section 25, Françoise Hardy, and Father John Misty got together and worked on an album, it might approach that sound. TLC: To come around to you, If you could add a book to the high school curriculum, what would it be? SK: Roberto Bolaño's 2666, because the book never strives to be efficient. The world is recognizable ours, and yet the ways in which Bolaño captures it are full of detours, strewn with revelations that make the reader feel alive to the multitude of voices around us.

Strangers in a Strange Land By Lou Pastina

I could not imagine leaving home and starting over in a new country. The United States is a country of immigrants and their traces are everywhere, especially here in New York. To make the transition easier, when the migrations were large, the communities assembled together in neighborhoods and made it look like home. I recently took a stroll that reminded me of this fact. And as I strolled through some of the neighborhoods, it occurred to me that actually I may be the

stranger. I left my office on Broad Street, which was where some of the earliest Dutch settlers made camp. At the entrance of 85 Broad Street is a medallion that outlines what the Dutch outpost looked like at that site. I made a left at Pearl Street and headed toward the Brooklyn Bridge. Pearl eventually connects with Water Street and the combined streets become Pearl. As I passed the South Street Seaport, I noticed that Pier 17 is now complete. This rebuilt structure now houses a concert venue on the roof. Some-

thing to check out this fall. When I got on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge, I made a right onto Madison Street and headed toward the Manhattan Bridge. This part of New York is gritty and there is little evidence of gentrification here. The projects and tenements are from a century ago and they look it. As you get closer to the bridge, you get closer to the heart of the real Chinatown, not the Canal Street version that has all the shops and restaurants, but the place where real people live. The more interesting part of Chinatown is the

area east of the Bowery and Canal Streets. That’s where you feel like you are in different land. But the area wasn’t always Chinese. Before the Chinese, this area was a Jewish quarter. And when I got past the bridge I found my way to Eldridge Street to the synagogue that reminded me of this fact. The Eldridge Street Synagogue was built by Eastern European Jews who settled in this area in the mid-to-late 1800s. They built a beautiful Moorish-influenced structure, and it has been lovingContinued on page 40

When I exited the synagogue, I made my way to Canal Street and walked up to the Manhattan Bridge, and on the northeast corner of Canal and the Bowery is what once was a movie theater and is now a Buddhist temple. This was the second one I encountered, the first being on East Broadway just a few blocks away. I was able to enter both and found great statues of Buddha and walls lined with how Buddha gave up his worldly possessions after sitting under the Bodhi Tree and lived a life dedicated to teaching. The Buddha at the Canal Street theater must be 30 feet high. It’s impressive. When I emerged from the temple, I continued west on Canal to Mulberry Street where I found the San Gennaro Festival in full swing. I was amazed to see that the Festival stretched from Canal Street to Houston Street, and showcased the many Italian restaurants and shops along the way. I thought about those that

came to live here, crammed in the six-story walkups and trying to make it in their new adopted country. And I thought about my daughter looking for an apartment in New York and some of these same six-story walkups asking for exorbitant rents. Some things never change. When I got as far north as Prince Street, I went west again and headed into Soho toward my eventual destination, the Mercer Kitchen. Across the street from Fanelli’s Cafe, the Mercer Kitchen is situated in the basement of the Mercer Hotel and has a ceiling that is actually the sidewalk made of beveled glass above. Back in the day, this was Soho’s way of letting light into the basements, and only in Soho can you find these type of sidewalks. Old New York is still there in many places. I can only imagine what it was like to walk these streets during the last centuries. But if you look around you can see traces left by those who made this city great, it’s people. Take a look around, you won’t be disappointed.

All players signing up for the Senior basketball programs (6th to the 8th grade) must bring a birth certificate to registration. The registration fee will be $75 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. As always, volunteers are needed to help make the program a success. SFDS 3rd Grade Boys Soccer Recap By Terence Moriarty

The St. Francis de Sales (SFDS) third-grade boys soccer team had two games last weekend with drastically different results. Saturday's game against Our Lady of Grace (OLG) ended in a well-played 5-1 victory. The team netted two quick firsthalf goals as Frankie Connors scored his first of the season on a smartly played strike past the goalie, that was quickly followed by a blasted shot into the back of the net by James Moriarty for his first goal of the year. Scoring chances for OLG were rare in the first half due to the tough defense of Cormac Powers, Michael Noone, Shane Natali and Timmy Flohr. Goalies, William Kelly and JW Youngberg, played brilliantly, stonewalling all shots on goal to keep the opposition off the scoreboard for the entire half. The beginning of the second half was more of the same for the boys of St. Francis as Gior-

gio Mazzaferro got the scoring started on a left-footed boot for his second goal in as many games. The offensive pressure by SFDS remained consistent as the game went on thanks to the strong midfield play of Liam McCormick, John Petrie and Ryan Gilroy. Eventually the pressure was too much for Our Lady of Grace to handle and the lead was extended to 4-0 by a nice pass and charge to the net by Frankie Connors and James Moriarty, who scored his second goal of the game. William Kelly was active on the offensive side of the field in the latter part of the

game and that hard work paid off when he scored his first goal of the year and St. Francis' fifth of the game. The solid gold goalie play continued throughout the second half and the team made sure that their lead was never challenged as they earned a well-deserved second win of the season. Sunday's contest pitted SFDS against Holy Child and unfortunately the result of this game was far different than the day before. The boys lost this one by a score of 7-0. Despite the lopsided score, the effort of the team never wavered and players such as Padraig O'Ro-

urke, Billy Papadopoulos and Gianluca Coyle played with grit and a determination that was impressive under the circumstances. Brendan Hayden was everywhere in the game and certainly made an impact on both sides of the pitch despite the team having such a tough day. An on-field post game "Floss" dance-off and combined team picture with the opponents quickly erased any bad feelings the boys may have had about their loss and brought some much-needed smiles back onto their faces.

3rd Grade Girls SFDS Blue (Team M) Game Recap

The third-grade girls St. Francis de Sales (SFDS) Blue (Team M) was at it once again this past Saturday with a stunning win against Blessed Trinity. Our friends from Breezy packed a one-two punch with two goals scored within the first 16 minutes of play by the extremely talented Taylor Sorrentino. But this initial advantage did not stop the girls in Blue though! Their defense was led by Emma Minson, Caroline Murphy, Chloe Gallo, Emma Watters, Beatriz Lahoz, Taylor Keily, Kelsi McMahon and Paula Zuzic, all of whom continually stopped Trinity’s advances, pushing the ball back into their territory! The goalies for SFDS Blue, Charlotte Moriarty, Mairead Fitzgerald, Caroline Murphy, Elle Manley, Chloe Gallo, and Mary Shaw thwarted any other advances

The final blow to Trinity’s lead came from Ashlee Ferriola’s breakaway that she converted into the game-winning goal!
