Our Gardening Angel Remembered Time and construction had taken its toll on Pat Brackley Park, located on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 123rd Street. The park is named for Patricia Brackley, a courageous lady who, in the 1950s, brought to Rockaway, the idea of garden clubs and the awareness of the importance of "green." She served as president of the Shore Garden Club and vice-president of the Second District of the Garden Clubs of New York State. Brackley died in 1999 after a long battle with cancer. The park is a tribute to her and is enjoyed by many. On Friday, September 18, Brackley’s family, members of the Belle Harbor Garden Club and others joined at the park to continue to honor its namesake. Through the years, the park
has been under the watchful eyes of Pat's husband, Al Brackley; son, Patrick and his wife, Sonia, and their three children. Patrick spoke at the gathering on Friday of how he remembered going there as a child with the family and helping to assist Pat to fulfill her dream. The Belle Harbor Garden Club stepped in with President Peggy De Matteis and Nadia Murphy to bring the park back to the park it once was. During Friday’s ceremony, a beautiful Crepe Myrtle was planted. Pat's three grandchildren symbolically put the last shovels of soil to the planting. The gathering became a well-attended, lovely celebration of Pat's life. There was a blessing by Deacon Armand D'Accordo and music by Dorothy Wagner.

The first batch of jetty rocks arrived late last week and have been placed on the sand at Beach 19th and Beach 24th Street in anticipation of beginning the groin field in the erosion hotspot in the Beach 30s. The Army Corps told us that by the end of the month the jetties will be “fully under construction. Well, the end of the month is just about here. Stay tuned!

The Rockaway Hotel If you just want the short version, this is a rave review. The long version begins with us arriving for a staycation, being greeted by friendly, welcoming staff at the front door of The Rockaway Hotel, the brand new place on Beach 108th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. A minute later, you’re struck by the sleek lobby and the feeling you’ve just left Rockaway but you haven’t; you’ve stepped into an alternate Rockaway universe, Rockaway, at its best. It’s Rockaway potential, realized. And then you get another nice greeting from people, all with blue masks, working in the lobby and at the front desk. The details start to reveal themselves. There’s a book on a table by Patti Smith who famously made Rockaway her home; a Ramones album cover is featured on a shelf just by the entrance to the outdoor pool area. But before you step outside, you have to pause to admire the white oak woodwork that gives the place a beachy but sophisticated vibe. It covers the ceiling and runs outside and overhangs the outdoor bar and dining area which is in a courtyard of sorts, with a pool as the centerpiece. Two steps from the lobby and you’re away at some place in California or Vegas. But you can’t be, because there are so many familiar faces. On this crisp day, a couple of people are in the heated pool. Some people sit on the far side in cabanas with big cushions. Tables on the near side are mostly full with people having late day lunch
and drinks. Decorative wire fencing with green vines surrounds the yard and you can peek through to see reminders like Happy Jack’s and Coastal Frozen Yogurt that you’re still in Rockaway. There are eight of us in the group and we’re staying the night. We’ll get to the rooms later, right now, we want to get a table warmed by the sun shining from the west. We get drinks and appetizers and 2020 doesn’t seem so bad. We’re instantly in vacation mode and having a great time. People all around seem… happy. And the other Rockaway people here? They look happy and proud. It seems, they feel a part of this. And why not? Even if it’s only hope they've invested, it seems to have paid off. It’s a place that makes Rockaway better. And everyone is feeling it. Our afternoon sit down turned into early dinner. No one’s ever going to trust my food reviews but I’ll just say my NY strip steak from the dinner menu was top notch and the others raved about lobster rolls and fish sandwiches from the all-day menu. Oh, and the Hemingway seafood platter was superb and worthy of The Old Man and The Sea. The servers were pleasant, attentive and quick. None of the items were cheap but I’ll say this about cost: Things seem a lot less expensive when they’re worth it. The oceanside rooms have balconies so you can step out and look down on the pool area
and out to the Atlantic. The bayside rooms offer views of Jamaica Bay and the City skyline. The rooms are smallish but well-appointed and the beds are the kind you wish you could take home. I think the rooms were pretty much soundproof because I didn’t hear a thing from outside all night long. Although a few beers and my advanced age may have contributed to the bliss. In any case, you’re not staying at The Rockaway Hotel to stay inside your room. The rooftop has an indoor bar with a skylight above. There are two outdoor areas on the roof, ocean and bayside, both with seating and both offering spectacular views. The ocean side outdoor space is big enough to host small events like lectures, yoga, or maybe a small band could set up there, when the pandemic is a memory. The catering hall on the second floor is called The Harbor Room and we got a peek
at the place that will soon host weddings and the like. Adjoining it is a smaller room, The McGuire Room, an homage to the McGuires of basketball fame who also used to run a bar at this location many decades ago. The Rockaway Hotel has a couple of “pardon our appearance” signs out but there’s no pardoning needed —they’re just aiming for perfection. A full, ground floor indoor restaurant, Margie’s, is still under construction and a spa and coffee shop will be coming along soon. There’s concern about how the place will do in the cold winter months but the professionalism and care on display suggests they’re ready for the challenge. For now, this is the place to forget your concerns and worries. You don’t have to go far to get far away. Go for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Or treat yourself to a stay. So the long version made short: Big thumbs up to The Rockaway Hotel.
Happiness was on full display.

Teddy Passes By Hurricane Teddy may not have made landfall, but its effects, including high tides and high surf, were noticed around the peninsula. The hurricane, which reached Category 4 strength early on, stayed out in the Atlantic as it passed by New York as a Category 2 around Monday and Tuesday. However, the
storm churned up some intense activity on the water, including abnormally high tides and some gnarly barrel waves for surfers, which they took full advantage of. Local photographer Theresa Racine captured some of the surf action, including Maya Karl taking to the waves, while we captured some of the high tides at Riis Park.

Laura Deckelman Remembered on the Waves Story and Photos By Katie McFadden
It was an event she would have photographed herself. On the morning of Saturday, September 19, surfers, neighbors and friends gathered on Beach 73rd Street to remember the late Laura Deckelman. The subject of many of her photos, surfers from across the peninsula remembered her in the way they know best—with a paddle out. Local surfers, Brian Tunick and Lou Harris, as well as Deckelman’s friend, Tina Schlissel, put out a call to the local surfing community to come together to remember Laura Deckelman, who spent many mornings on the beach, photographing their time on the waves. On May 5, Deckelman died suddenly, just a little more than two years after her beloved husband, Paul, died in 2018. At the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, a large gathering could not be held to
no matter how rainy, how disgusting, she was out capturing, immortalizing us surfing, the things the ocean was doing, the dogs of Rockaway, the people of Rockaway. She did so much work to make the ferry come to Rockaway and make it a regular thing. She just loved this town, loved the people of this town and wanted to make surfing and Rockaway more accessible to all, he said. Although not a surfer, Tina Schlissel came out to show support for her dear friend from the shore. “Laura was a photographer and an artist. honor her, so they chose to do want money, she just loved tak- She painted and took photos of ing pictures and she was just a everything and everybody and so last Saturday. Tunick says he also met Deckelman through her photography. “Laura was as much a part of Rockaway as the boardwalk, as the water. She was out every day, no matter the weather,
the crack of dawn, as soon as the sun came up, she was out here,â€? Schlissel said. “She was such a nice person, very sweet, very caring. LAURA DECKELMAN Continued from Page 12 taking pictures.” No doubt, Laura’s presence could be felt along the beach on Saturday. “I swear, some days I look and I can still see here in her purple shirt, shivering away with her giant camera in hand. Let’s go out there and remember Laura for who she is. I’m sure she and Paul are looking down on this and smiling,” Tunick said. Right after he spoke, a big gust of wind blew through, as if Laura herself was calling the surfers to the water. With flowers in their mouths or tucked under their arms, the surfers took to the water and paddled out, forming a circle to remember Laura Deckelman. Together, they splashed up the water and threw the flowers into the sea, as spectators on the beach did the same. Saturday’s ceremony took place on the sabbath and Rosh Hashanah, the celebration of the Jewish New Year. Schlissel explained, “Laura would be very happy to get rid

She lived in the orthodox community in Bayswater but she had an adventurous spirit and was interested in meeting other people and learning their stories,” Barber said. “She was the number one advocate for keeping the ferry. She gave it a face and a personality, and of this year, 2020. This is Rosh Schlissel, Sandra Schunk and she really shared her love for it. On Sunday, October 11, at 9:30 a.m., all are welcome to join for a ferry ride from Rockaway to Manhattan, to remember Laura. Deckelman’s son, David, is expected to attend. A deep, heartfelt thank you to the Rockaway community for helping make this year’s Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic one of the best. Even in the challenging times of the day we were able to adapt and properly celebrate Richie’s spirit with family and friends on the beach that he treasured. A special thank you goes out to the Graybeards, Rockaway WISH, the Dematteis family, Ed Murray and the countless others who contributed more than the cost of a T-shirt which assists us in helping a Rockaway family in need. And, as always, much love to those who help make this day run so smoothly, especially Kathy Marquardt and Tommy Galvin. Looking forward to seeing you all next year! With Love and Respect, The Allen Family For those who missed out - we set up a T-shirt order form which will be available until September 30th at the following link:

By Beth Hanning RIP Lord and Taylor Nostalgia. What a wonderful thing to hear a song and remember a significant, or minor incident, and smile. I can hear certain songs and remember that my mom or dad liked it, that it created a great memory or sometimes a sad memory. One of the reasons I enjoy the beach so much is so many of my childhood memories were from the beach. We had a routine each day: someone was in charge of making the drinks, someone made the sandwiches and someone made sure we had snacks.
Now we did not have juice boxes back in the 1970s and 1980s. We did not even have Hi-C or Kool-Aid in my family as they were expensive. We had red drink mix, orange drink mix or grape drink mix. Once in a while, if Nestea was on sale, we had brand name iced tea. Of course, when I was in charge, I made the drinks extra sweet! The snacks were not of the gourmet variety either. We had generic cookies such as vanilla cream, chocolate cream or the best was the assorted brand. I never knew what I was missing as I loved
our generic brands. Another place that holds a nostalgic feeling for me is the department store, Lord and Taylor. Not the flagship store in Manhattan, the Garden City location. This was a magical place for me as a child whenever my grandmother, Mary Walsh, brought me there for significant events. I clearly remember trying on junior prom dresses and her telling me I was too young to wear black! If she could only see what some people wear today! I also remember her always asking me how much something cost as her eyesight was giving her trouble. I would often tease her and she would reply that I should just wait as it would happen to me one day. Well, Nan that day is here. I am slowly going blind. After we purchased the necessities such as a gown or shoes, we always went to Sara Beth’s, the café located on the second floor. I remember feeling so special that Nan and I could enjoy a meal together. It was always just us, even when
Page 15 my mother was alive, it was an event that just Nan and I shared together. Nan and I would always talk about various things such as my school, her job or what was going on in the family. I continued this tradition with my daughters and we even tried Lord and Taylor’s flagship store once to be a little but more fancy. I did not like it at all and the selection was not as good as Garden City’s. We left Manhattan and immediately drove to Garden City and there is where we found the prom dress, the Arianna Papell red carpet dress, which was, in fact, black. I hope Nan would have approved. It was a senior prom instead of a junior prom! I do not know where I will go for my “mother of the bride” gowns one day. I am not a big fan of Roosevelt Field, I always liked my department store alone. RIP Lord and Taylor. I will remember you fondly. Thank you Nan for the great memories.
PUBLIC NOTICE
Patrick J.Clark, Artist August 18, 2020 Mr. Jonathan Kuhns NYC Parks, Director, Art & Antiquities Jonathan.Kuhn@parks.nyc.gov The Arsenal, Central Park 830 Fifth Avenue, Northwest Turret New York, NY 10065 Dear Jonathan, Thanks very much for inviting me to participate in determining issues regarding the fate of my Tribute Park 9/11 Memorial mosaic artwork entitled “Navigators Star”. I believe it is too early to determine the mosaic is damaged beyond repair. I feel it is in my legal interest and is my moral right as an artist pursuant to both New York law and federal copyright law 17 U.S.C. sec 106 a (VARA) to protect and preserve the artwork to the extent it is possible. The Artists Authorship Rights Act is a 1984 New York law that provides legal protection for artists’ moral rights. While under both laws; ”Alteration, defacement, mutilation or modification of such work resulting from the passage of time or the inherent nature of the materials will not by itself create a violation; provided such alteration, defacement, mutilation or modification was not the result of gross negligence in maintaining or protecting the work of fine art, in this case, I believe, the deterioration of the work is the result of gross negligence. “Navigator Star” is on the verge of destruction because of the failure to maintain. Under VARA, I have the right to prevent the destruction of “Navigators Star”. I do not consent nor approve of the demolition or destruction of the mosaic. While it appears in a dire state of deterioration, I believe the condition and potential for restoration needs to be accessed by art professionals. Once assessed, if it is determined it can be restored, bids should be acquired to determine if it is affordable to restore. I have no intention of bidding on or undertaking restoration of the mosaic myself. If the “Friends of Tribute Park” or NYC Parks is not able to undertake this alone, I am willing to volunteer and offer my expertise and establish or serve on a new committee to expeditiously seek advice and resources to proceed. A Tribute Park Artworks Maintenance subcommittee of “Friends” or a new autonomous committee can be formed with professionals and community members to move ahead on resolving the Mosaic issue. The first step is to have the mosaic condition assessed by a professional arts conservator. If determined the mosaic can be restored, a bid or bids should be solicited from a professional mosaic or related artworks fabricator or restorer for the work. At that point the subcommittee could raise funds to do the work, or determine another potential course of action. The maintenance committee could also spearhead preservation and maintenance of my other Tribute Park artworks, “The Heavens over Rockaway” Dalle de verre glass dome, which despite the very real need, has received no maintenance, condition review or restoration by the “Friends of Tribute Park” or NYC Parks, before or after Hurricane Sandy, along with the FDNY 9/11 Memorial. The sculptural steel entry gates by artist Geoff Rawling could also be monitored and maintained by the committee. As I previously made known to the “Friends of Tribute Park”, the Dome is at high risk for irreparable deterioration but can be saved if the need is assessed right away and maintenance undertaken. Sincerely, Patrick Clark

and harboring city in human history, which has endured multiple economic collapses, the September 11 attacks, and now a once-in-a-century pandemic, is dying simply because the author cannot find a parking spot and is dismayed at his inability to navigate its streets is a laughable one at best. Gabriel Frank Lazer Nay, Lazer Yay Dear Editor: I fail to see how Governor Cuomo, the political leader responsible for making New York’s State’s Covid-19 infection rate and case count one of the lowest in the country at a time when most states have witnessed extreme increases in case counts and deaths, is a fascist. We New Yorkers owe him our gratitude. Furthermore, I am unable to understand how New York, rightfully named by the author as the greatest city on Earth has, in any way, been "slowly eroding." tiful announcement in The Rockaway Times, my Mom — Peggy Moerler — celebrated her 90th birthday on September 12. There are two specific people that I would especially like to thank for helping to make my Mom’s birthday special: (a) Mary Olsen of The Rockaway Times who was so helpful in putting together the beautiful announcement, despite our changing the background coloraturas a few times! A great job Mary — my Mom was so happy — many thanks! (b) My brother, Joe, who arranged the drive, scheduled phone and Zoom calls throughout the day and watched over the day’s events, ensuring a great deal of happiness for our Mom. Kudos Joe — incredibly well done. Lastly, to all the people who participated in my Mom’s birthday — once again, you’ve demonstrated that Rockaway is such a special place. Thanks! Peter Moerler (Temporarily resident in Dear Editor: Singapore, but with “sand in As many Rockawayites now my shoes.” I’ll be back!) know, in part due to the beauwas probably halfway through it without knowing the name, and I said "Rockaway." She nailed it. Every summer my mother would rent out our house to city people and every September they would leave, starting with Mrs. Burke from the attic and every September without fail she would cry thinking that this would be her last summer in Rockaway. And then one September it was. It's the story of nailing down the bungalow as winter is nearing in. Today, Rockaway is a bedroom community that goes year-round but when I was growing up, we had blocks and blocks of empty shuttered-up houses just beckoning imps like me to create mischief. And yes, we did use to jump from roof top to roof top, something you could never get away with today. Shaun Reen

The Obstacle is the Path Life is not easy. That being said, why do we struggle when we are thrown a curve ball? Do we expect too much or are we resistant to the difficulties that comes with life itself? Maybe you are one of the few people who live in a rose garden with no sorrows or sufferings. If so, you are above and beyond blessed. Perhaps you could shed some light on how you removed the obstacles in your way. In this life, there will always
be struggles. It is impossible to be human and perfect. There is no such thing. We all have some hurdles to overcome, however, it is how we move forward and remove the barriers that separate us. I have been taught that the obstacle is our teacher. It has been put there intentionally and it is part of our journey. Therefore, complaining or dwelling on this difficult moment does more harm than good. If we learn how to nav-

igate the path with ease and acceptance, we can change the course at any time. It takes a lot of courage and determination. Knowing thyself is your highest gift. Furthermore, you will learn how to graciously remove the obstacles in your way. Knowing that the impediments are our greatest lessons and will teach us how to live a life of joy and happiness. Sickness, financial problems, relationships, failures in business, etc., they are all useful obstacles that help enlighten and teach us how to live our lives fully. The path changes many times, but the destiny is the same. How you walk through life, meeting and greeting people along the way makes all the difference. Complaining does not help, in fact it can dig you deeper down into the hole you have fell into. Dwelling on the negative only increases the negativity. Take time to see the beauty around you. My mom, Mary Tully Timlin, would have been 93 years
The Rockaway Times old September 6. She passed away over 30 years ago. It was one of the most painful things to lose my dear mother and it took many years to heal. She would not be there for most of our weddings, children, etc. Yet, after many years of grief and loss, my family was able to see this major obstacle as a lesson that taught us how fragile life can be and truly not to sweat the small stuff. What is truly important in your life and how can you live a life worth living? What are you passionate about? Are there any major obstacles that come up again and again? If today was your last day to live, how would you live it? Stay on the path. Be good to yourself and others. This one crazy life we have is gift. It’s not an easy road to travel and yet there are so many blessings. Choose to be positive and let go of all the worries of doom that may never even happen. We have this one life!

Breast Cancer Medications
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Breast cancer risk-reducing medications may decrease the risk of primary breast cancer in some women aged 35 and older who are at increased risk of breast cancer. While there is no specific cutoff to define that increased risk, most studies define it as at least a 3% chance of developing it in five years. So how is that increased risk determined? The answer is a complex one. Obviously, family history is an important consideration, especially if there is a familial genetic mutation, for example the rare BRCA mutation. Other factors include age at which menstruation began and reproductive factors such as the number of children and pregnancies. Another risk factor is very dense breasts as seen on mammography, which make mammographic detection of early, small tumors much more difficult.
There are multiple breast cancer risk estimation models that have been developed, none of which is clearly superior to the others. I have listed some of them at the end of this column. Which tool to use and how to interpret the results should be discussed with a doctor and/ or genetic counselor. The medications that may be used for breast cancer risk reduction include selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) such as tamoxifen and raloxifene, and aromatase inhibitors (AIs), such as Arimidex (anastrozole), Aromasin (exemestane), and Femora (letrozole). SERMs are antiestrogens that block the effects of estrogen, and AIs block the enzyme aromatase that converts the hormone androgen into estrogen in the ovary. Only tamoxifen is indicted for use in premenopausal women. AIs are most effective in postmenopausal women, more effective than SERMs, but they cannot block the production of estrogen in the ovaries
in premenopausal women unless a medication to suppress the ovaries is also used, for example Lupron (leuprolide) and Zoladex (goserelin). These medications may reduce a person’s risk of certain types of breast cancer, but there is no evidence that they reduce the risk of estrogen-receptor (ER) negative breast cancer. Women taking these medications should still undergo regular breast cancer screening, and younger women considering pregnancy should not take them as they may be harmful to a developing fetus. The typical duration of treatment is five years. Of course, like all medications, they do have side effects. For example, for postmenopausal women who still have a uterus, raloxifene is a better choice than tamoxifen because it has a lower risk of uterine cancer. SERMs may also cause hot flashes and increase the risk of blood clots in the legs and lungs, especially in women who smoke. The goal in
BELLE ROCK CAR SERVICE
considering use of these medications is to determine who is likely to have the greatest benefit from them, and whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks. The use of these medications is constantly evolving. Risk estimation resources include: The National Cancer Institute Tool, known as the Gall model (bcrisktool.cancer.gov/), the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium Risk Calculator (tools.bcsc-scc.org/BC5yearRisk/), the IBIS Breast Cancer Risk Evaluation Tool (ems-trials.org/riskevaluator/), and the Breast and Ovarian Analysis Disease Incidence and Carrier Estimation Algorithm (ccge.meds chl.cam.ac.uk/ boadicea/). On Thursday, September 17, American Princess Cruises held its first Seafari of the season, bringing marine life-lovers deeper out to sea, to witness whales in the wild. During this 10-hour trip that launched from their temporary location in Sheepshead Bay at 7 a.m., the boat went down south near Asbury Park, NJ, and then deeper out into the Atlantic for a unique experience to see even more marine life. On this trip, passengers saw hungry humpbacks, playful minke whales, sea turtles, sharks, jellyfish, seabirds and more. The next Seafari will be Thursday, October 1, but American Princess is still hosting its regular, shorter tours through November. Dear Enchantress, HELP! I need to stay away from negativity. I'll just say my family, as in my parents, have a very different political viewpoint than I do. It doesn't really matter the details. I am the black sheep of my family, and I keep getting more and more different. I refuse to talk to them about anything political. I have actually trained myself to be quiet around them. It’s not easy, and usually I overeat after I hang out with them. I'm worried about the planet, and everything. I'm not really sure what I'm asking, but I need help. I love my family so much, they don't poke at me specifically, but they talk politics all the time, and I feel like my overeating is out of control after I leave them. So not really sure what I should do about that, but how could I still see them, and not get so angry inside? Any tips or things to do? ARGH. Dear Imploding Iris. Sister! You are so genius for sharing, asking and writing here, and well done on working with yourself and not engaging if you are not ready or don’t feel good about it. It sounds like you love your family so much and you have not made their choices, but that doesn’t mean they are out of your life. Brava to you big time! I've been studying the Jewish Priestess way and I read something today that feels like exactly what I can share with you here. It says women like to get revenge, but the Goddess seeks to heal. If you look at them and anyone else you disagree with, through the eyes of love and compassion, love will be how you see them. No matter what side a person takes, they are human and they desire peace of some kind. All of our sys-
tems are being challenged and it feels extra hard, and for you to not allow yourself to judge your family is quite profound. The part of you that keeps quiet by choice is great, and instead of the energy going outward, it's imploding, causing you to struggle and overeat. I am also an emotional eater, and it ain’t easy. So, giving you the advice I give myself, which I follow with food, is to have amazing fruits and healthy options all ready and cut up, so I can grab it when I need it. I don't keep junk food at home, other than dates and chocolate covered almonds. Also, I'm curious how much time your maximum limit is with your family before you begin to crumble inside? That is something good to notice. Are you good for short spurts? Or are you a long haul and then take a day off? This is something you will know. Learning your own boundaries, especially with family (when it's not easy and flowing), is a great tool. Because of what you've shared, it sounds like they care about you and they would not want you to be self- sabotaging or treating yourself badly. I hope this helps, hang in there powerfully! ROCKAWAY, LOCALLY-INSPIRED SPARKLING WATER, MAKES ITS DEBUT A place so good, you can drink it in. Bridget Firtle is keeping Rockaway refreshed. The Rockaway native and founder of Owney’s Rum, is back at it with a sparkling water called none other than— Rockaway. On September 21, Firtle official launched Rockaway, a new sparkling water that embodies the creative, unfaltering energy of New York City and offers functional benefits from powerful plants and adaptogenic herbs. Rockaway includes four beach-inspired flavors such as Coastal Immunity, Tidal Defense, Endless Summer Energy and Last Stop Chill. Guided by centuries of herbal medicine traditions across Ayurvedic, Chinese and European cultures, Rockaway uses a combination of powerful plants and adaptogenic herbs to create each recipe. Adaptogens, compounds found in herbs and roots of plants, are
said to perform many functions in the body to help its ability to respond and overcome the influences of physical, chemical and biological stress, and each one elicits distinctive functions to promote health and wellbeing. Coastal Immunity, flavored with pineapple, ginger, tulsi, turmeric and sea salt serves as an immunity Boost, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and digestive aid. Tidal Defense, made with berry, hibiscus, Vitamin C, astragalus and sea salt, serves as an immunity boost, antioxidant dose and an anti-inflammatory. Endless
Summer Energy, made with watermelon, guava, maca, ginseng and sea salt, gives you that extra boost of energy and focus. Last Stop Chill, made with lemon, lemongrass, ashwagandha, valerian root and sea salt, provides stress relief, anti-anxiety, mood enhancement and improved sleep quality. A mission-driven company, Rockaway is committed to giving back to the ocean by fighting climate change and plastic pollution. As a member of 1% for the Planet, Rockaway donates 1% of its sales to the local NYC chapter of The Surfrider Foundation, a global non-profit dedicated to protecting the world’s beaches. Rockaway comes from Bridget Firtle, a born and bred Rockaway Beach girl who, after starting with a career on Wall Street, decided to get into the beverage business. In 2012, she founded Owney’s Rum in Brooklyn, New York City's
only rum distillery. For her efforts, Firtle was recognized as a Forbes 30 Under 30, Zagat 30 Under 30 and one of Imbibe’s 75 People to Watch. Within five years of the launch, Bridget formed a strategic partnership with international spirits company Proximo Spirits, and in early 2020 she successfully sold the company to launch Rockaway. Firtle has enlisted the help of other locals to make Rockaway, Rockaway. Graphic designer and illustrator Alex Cannon drew Rockaway’s lively, gritty black and white logo and packaging pattern that highlights New York City beach scenes (bicycles, the A train, seagulls, lifeguard chairs and more). Rockaway will be available for purchase online with nationwide free shipping at drinkrockaway.com. For more information, follow along on Instagram @drinkrockaway or visit drinkrockaway.com.

FDNY Makes Heroic Offseason Water Rescue Lifeguards may be off duty for the season, but FDNY is still answering the call. On the morning of September 18, firefighters from Rockaway’s local firehouses came to the rescue of three swimmers in distress about 100 yards offshore of Beach 98th Street. Following the rescue, firefighter and journalist, Brian Dessart, shared their story of heroism on Facebook. “A lady from the terrace was shouting that there were [victims in the water] far out on Beach 98th Street. When we got to the beach, we could see them. I tried to see which way the tide was going, and that got us on the angle [to enter the water] and see the way they were drifting. That's when I decided to don our water rescue equipment, and I swam out there, keeping my eyes on the victim,” FDNY Firefighter Martin Tubridy of Ladder 121 on Beach 49th Street, told Dessart. “I made it past the surf and that's where I encountered the initial victim and also

his brother who were both in distress. Firefighters [Edwin] Rojas, Ladder 121, and Thomas Blum (detailed from Engine 231) went further out to grab the second victim. I had my victim hold on to the [torpedo] and we swam in, and Rojas and Blum secured
him to a surfboard and the tether team pulled them in. It was a great team effort and everything that we talked about in the rig on our way to the rescue came to fruition, and helped us become successful.” According to Dessart, while
Tubridy was securing his victim, Firefighters Rojas, Blum and Thomas Roche (detailed from Engine 266) successfully made contact with, secured and pulled in the second and third victims. Firefighter chauffeur Antonio Pirozzi, Ladder 121, secured the surfboard and additional essential backup water rescue equipment from L121 as the events were unfolding. "As their supervisor, I find myself at a loss of words to describe the selfless actions of the brave firefighters," Battalion 47 Commander Chief Robert Forde said. "These fine men and women prove their courage day-in and day-out. However, today raised my level of respect to an all-new high. The coordination between the members of Ladder 121 was unprecedented. The support companies also made the operation seamless." Ladder 121 was assisted in the operation by Engine 268, Engine 265, Ladder 137, Squad 270, Rescue 4, Marine 1, Marine 3, Marine 9 and Battalion 39.
THE OLD GRAY MULE
“Oh, the old gray mule she ain’t what it used to be, ain’t what it used to be …” The old Democrat Party has a new jockey who made a hard left turn at the fork in the road and is limping straight to the Sanders’ barn in WOKETOPIA. If you are one of the thousands of traditional democrats who feel left in the dust by the new radical party, maybe it is time to give the Conservative Party a look. The Conservative Party of New York State was founded in 1962 by dissatisfied citizens who, like you, felt government at all levels was failing New York voters. For the last 20 years, despite the loss of residents, the Conservative Party has increased the number of votes on its party line. This success is due to our consistent 58year support of traditional family values, support of law enforcement, opposition to systemic wealth distribution through high taxation, and unashamed support for the preservation of life. Take a few minutes, go online, and look at the Conservative Party’s 2020 Legislative Priorities. We would not be surprised if you discovered that you are already a conservative. Now is the time to join the side you are on.

Wrestle Talk TO SIGN OR NOT TO SIGN By Eric Jayden
Results from the AEW Dynamite Show on September 16, 2020 from the Daily Palace in Jacksonville, Florida: FTR defeated The Jurassic Express. Hangman Page defeated Frankie Kazarian. MJF defeated Shawn Dean. Private Party defeated The Inner Circle. Thunder Rosa defeated Ivelisse. Best Friends defeated Ortiz & Santana. The Match of the Night was Thunder Rosa versus Ivelisse. This was a very solid match with good action and good storytelling. It's great seeing Thunder Rosa in AEW defending her NWA Women's Championship. For most aspiring wrestlers, their goal is to one day be able
to sign a contract with a major wrestling company. Being able to sign a contract brings the opportunity of more exposure and more money. A majority of wrestlers work for years to get that opportunity and while some are successful, unfortunately many are not. In the past, being signed to a major company meant that you have finally made it to the big leagues. But over the past several years, many wrestlers have found success working independently for promotions across the United States and even the world, with many of them making money well into the six figures through multiple bookings and merchandise sales, without being signed to any major wrestling company. This brings us to the subject of this column "To Sign Or Not Too Sign." Are the coattails of the WWE or any other major
wrestling promotion as good as they used to be? Is it still status quo to equate being signed to success? In my opinion, a wrestler working independently can be as equally successful as a wrestler signed to a major company. Yes, it's nice to be signed, but I feel those days are long and gone and any wrestler can take opportunity into his/her hands and build his/
her character and brand and make it successful........independently. On next week's edition, I will answer more of your questions that have been coming in, so please keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ericjayden and on Twitter @followthebadguy Have a great week!
