Ulrich Urges Stringer to Investigate Homeless Shelter Contracts Councilman Eric Ulrich is continuing his fight in opposition to the proposed homeless shelter at 226 Beach 101st Street. In a letter penned to New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Ulrich is calling on Stringer to investigate how the Mayor's Office of Contact Services (MOCS) handles its homeless shelter contracts. Noting a complete lack of transparency and community input, the letter urges the Comptroller review City contracts for "integrity, accountability and fiscal compliance." "Earlier this year, my office learned of the City's plans to open a shelter for homeless men at 226 Beach 101st Street in Rockaway," Councilman Eric Ulrich wrote. "We were not notified by any city agency, but by neighbors of the building who had spoken to construction workers at the site." Ulrich argued the City's decision to house 120 homeless men at 226 Beach 101 Street is "entirely inappropriate," cit-

ing a lack of support services on the Rockaway Peninsula, as well as few occupational or residential opportunities in the area. The Councilman also expressed concerns about the location's close proximity to a number of schools. "I was very upset that the proposed building—a former warehouse, located within four blocks of three public school buildings housing an elementary school, three separate middle schools, and two high schools as well as a charter school—would be used to shelter homeless individuals," the Councilman said. "They will be trapped, literally in a warehouse, if these plans

come to fruition," he added. The Mayor's Office of Contract Services (MOCS) recently held their mandated hearing for the contract with the group, Black Veterans for Social Justice (BVSJ) to operate this facility. The Councilman expressed concerns that members of the Council and the general public are not allowed to see copies of these contracts unless they physically appear at MOCS to review them. Even then—only notes are permitted and no copies can be made. Additionally, elected officials and community residents are not notified of these hearings unless they happen to review the city record every day. "Locals who did make it to MOCS for the hearing have informed me that the contract actually calls for a 'health and mental care facility,' and a 'treatment health care facility,' rather than a transitional shelter,'" the Councilman said. Ulrich pointed out a review of the contract summa-

ry on the website for MOCS includes the information that BVSJ is going to be paid $40,780,555.00 over 57 months (9/1/19 through 6/30/24) to operate this shelter. "That comes out to $5,859.27 per resident each month or $70,311.30 per resident per year. These costs are absurd on their face," he argued. "I'm respectfully requesting that the Comptroller's office use its authority for 'reviewing City contracts for integrity, accountability and fiscal compliance,' to determine exactly what type of facility is planned for this location, what services will be provided, and why so much money is being spent, and to make that information and a copy of the contract publicly accessible to my office and my constituents," Ulrich added. "We intend to continue to fight the placement of this shelter as it is inappropriate for both the potential residents, as well as the neighborhood."

How Ya Doin’ I remember somebody told me that he took the subway to work ever y day and he’d see the same woman. Ever y day. For years. He didn’t know her at all. On one day, no different than any other day, he said hi to her. And what happened? She freaked out. From that day on, she would never ride in the same car with him. He wasn’t making a move. His hello was just common courtesy. You see the same person ever y day for years, isn’t it a bit odd NOT to say hello? It’s not like he went overboard and asked, how are you? He just said, hi. How are you? or the more common, how ya doin’?, is a standard enough greeting; you’re not surprised if someone getting on an elevator or sitting next to you on a plane says that to you. This being New York, you just have to ready if you’re the one saying hello or asking, how ya doin’? Some comedian had a bit that had to be real. He said he was new to the City and was just trying to be a New Yorker so he said to a guy he was passing in the street, how ya doin? The guy scowled at him and barked, “Who are you, my effin’ doctor?” I was reminded of this last week when I was giving somebody a quick tour of Rockaway. I made the mistake of introducing my guest to a Rockaway character — the type you try to avoid, the type that makes you fake a

call on your phone. You’ve done that, haven’t you? We have safe words in the tiny Rockaway Times office. If I ask Pat McVeigh if she’s remembered to buy the cauliflower her family wants, she knows she’s got to make an emergency phone call to me so I can escape being cornered. Of course, there’s only so many times you can say cauliflower without people thinking Pat’s got a cauliflower problem and it’s weird how it coincides with a phone call to me. But I had no cauliflower safe word, no shorthand, escape plan for the visitor I was showing around. He made the mistake of offering more than hello to this Rockaway character and asked, innocently enough, how ya doin’? The answer, how much time you got? He would’ve been trapped but I jumped in. I said, “Sorry, we gotta go pick up some cauliflower.” The visitor looked puzzled. He blew it. The Rockaway character looked at me with disappointment. Really? I was making a joke, he said, and you go right to cauliflower. That’s like calling the cops on me. No really, I tried. Keyfood’s got it for like two bucks a head. The Rockaway character walked away, shaking his head. My visitor noticed I was unsettled and said, how ya doin? I looked at him for a full three seconds. I’m dying, how about you?

Rockaway’s Craftiest: Meet Marybeth Galvin of Betsy’s Bungalow RT: The bulk of your pieces truly reflect Rockaway. How do you get your ideas? Galvin: From the subway and street signs to the Christmas globe with Rockaway sand and a piece of the original boardwalk, I try to create Rockaway-themed pieces that the whole neighborhood would appreciate, not just residents, but also businesses. Living on the beach is a big inspiration.

Knock on wood—at any boardwalk fair or holiday market across the peninsula, you may have spotted a red-haired woman with piercing blue eyes and a generous smile vending her wood-crafted pieces. This is none other than born-andraised local Marybeth Galvin of Betsy’s Bungalow. What spawned Galvin’s passion for craft-making with wood? Three things—the beach, her family and Dr. Seuss. In the following Q&A, learn about Galvin and her Rockaway-based business, Betsy’s Bungalow. RT: What sparked the idea for Betsy’s Bungalow? Galvin: I studied criminal justice at St. John’s University, and worked first as a paralegal, then at the District Attorney’s office. After a long day, I just wanted to go home and paint as an outlet for my anxiety and stress with work. So when I turned 30, I said to myself, “Why not give my passion to create art a shot.” I realized that I was no longer the person I was when I was 20. My father, Dr. Peter Galvin, besides being known as the chief medical officer at the now-closed Peninsula Hospital, is also a carpenter. So working alongside him, I learned a lot. Also, my mom is very crafty and comes up with a lot of ideas. After a friend encouraged me to participate in my first vendor’s market, I got the confidence that—yes, I can make Betsy’s Bungalow my full-time voca-

What’s your street cred for being a Rockaway local? Galvin: It’s so funny when people ask me if I’m a local. My response is “are you a local?” I was born and raised in Rockaway. For elementary school, I attended St. Francis de Sales.

Stella Maris for high school and even attended Beach Channel for a while. My father was born and raised on the block we live on. At one time, we had four generations living on the same block. So yeah, you don’t get more local than me. RT: How would you brand Betsy’s Bungalow? Galvin: Handmade and 100% local. The buyer, West Harlem Units LLC, looks to be part of Goldmont Realty in Brooklyn. Goldmont says on its website, “An emphasis is placed on staying one step ahead in the market.” Residential development is very likely. The sellers were Al and Thomas Catanese. ***** It’s the last weekend of the driveway shuffle. Uptown weekend parking restrictions end on September 30, so this is the last weekend you’ll have to move cars off the street. ***** Do some good opportunity. The Graybeards Annual Blood

Drive is Sunday, October 6 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the St. Francis de Sales gym on Beach 129th Street. ***** How about Poseidon’s Parade? This signature Rockaway event really keeps getting better and better and the spectator crowds reflect its growing popularity. The boardwalk was packed! The parade was colorful and lively and fun. The organizers, Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, deserve a Standing O. We have to give a special shout out to Bettina Hornung who (dressed like Madonna) kept the parade moving past the judges’ section at Beach 96th. Not an easy job. She was awesome. ***** Today is the 50th anniversary of a big Rockaway fire. Lenny’s Amusements, also known as Lenny’s Fascination, was a big attraction on the boardwalk between Beach 34th and Beach 35th Street when it burned and disappeared forever. Lenny is still around, though! Lenny Kohn is still full of ideas for Rockaway and can be found at Rockaway Graphics on Beach

92nd and RBB. ***** More of the same. Construction starts this week on a $139 million plan to revamp Downtown Far Rockaway. Work will address streets, pedestrian space, and storm water drainage. Work will center around Mott and Central Avenue. According to the city, most of these streets will be rebuilt and realigned to make traffic flow better and to increase pedestrian safety. There will also be a pedestrian plaza next to the Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue subway station. Expect a lot of lines no one can understand on many streets. ***** Well, it seems whoever had the idea for an Oktoberfest at St. Francis had a good one. The event on Friday, October 4, is sold out as more than 600 tickets have been sold. We can’t wait to see who’ll be rocking the lederhosen. ***** Congrats to Natalia Kula, a Mary Louis Academy senior, who has been named a Commended Student in the annual

Page 7 National Merit awards. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for exceptional academic promise. It could be a song... ***** On Wednesday evening, as we were going to press, a meeting concerning the recent anti-Semitic incidents was being held at Congregation Ohab Zedek in Belle Harbor. Deborah Lauter, Executive Director of the New York City Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes, was expected to meet with clergy and community leaders. We’ll post a story online and have it in print next week.

A Sad Tail

Well this sure seemed like a bad omen on the day of Poseidonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Parade. On the morning of Saturday, September 21, a bottlenose dolphin washed up dead around Beach 102nd Street. After early morning, beachgoers reported the animal, NYC Parks Department staff responded to the scene to keep crowds away until experts could respond to perform a necropsy. The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) responded. The Rockaway Times reached out to them for information on a possible cause of death, but the definite answer may not come for a while. However, there was no evidence of ingested plastic or a vessel strike, a common cause of death for local marine life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We did not find anything significant other than some lung worms and splenic cysts. We took samples to send to a pathologist to help determine a cause of death. Those results may take several months to

come back,â&#x20AC;? AMCS said. Although locals can see plenty of dolphins alive and well from the shoreline nowadays, it is not very common for them to wash up dead. The last report of a dolphin washing up dead was in May 2015, and before that, August 2013. However AMCS says last week was a particularly rough one for marine life around New York waters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;AMCS responded to seven animals in seven

days last week, including two whales, a dolphin, and four sea turtles. Three of the sea turtles had evidence of human interaction,â&#x20AC;? the organization posted to its Facebook page. One of the whales, a right whale, had been found entangled in the past, and the sea turtles all showed evidence of a vessel strike. AMCS says there are ways people can do their part to prevent more tragedies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unfortu-

nately, this is not uncommon in the New York Bight, but it is preventable. Picking up trash from beaches, not releasing balloons, opting for reusable alternatives to plastic, and keeping an eye out for marine life in our shared waters are just some of the things you can do to promote marine conservation through action,â&#x20AC;? the organization posted. Far Rock Strong Aims to Lift Kids Higher By Katie McFadden

Far Rock Strong is determined to lift Rockaway’s kids to levels they may not have dreamed of. On Tuesday, September 24, a group of girls met at the Hammels Community Center gym as they do every Tuesday for ladies’ night basketball with Team Crate. In between shooting hoops and participating in drills led by coach Sean “Sports” Scott, the girls discussed things like their uniforms at school. While they may wear the same Team Crate uniform on the basketball court, their school uniforms vary because they come from different schools across the peninsula. While their basketball jersey may be one color, their skin colors vary. On Tuesday night, girls of all nationalities and backgrounds performed synchronized sit ups during their workout. It’s a beautiful image that perfectly reflects the idea of “one peninsula.”—the mantra of Team Crate/ Far Rock Strong, an organization aiming

to reach and elevate local youth, while uniting the peninsula. The folks behind Team Crate have been working with local youth, inspiring them through the game of basketball for

about a decade, but formally developed Team Crate in 2016. Through the program, a group of volunteers has helped to keep local youth engaged in positive outlets such as basketball, rath-

er than going down harmful paths in life that involve drugs, crime and violence. “Where I came from, a lot of people got distracted and led astray. They got bamboozled into thinking that getting arrested by age 21 was normal and the only way to successfully get out of the neighborhood was through narcotics. We’re trying to change that and bring a new normal to these kids,” Rashaun Banjo, one of Team Crate/ Far Rock Strong’s organizers said. Executive Director Lugarry Vernon says he and Banjo aim to be the mentors that they wish they had when they were younger. “You can go left, or you can go right in a heartbeat. Athletics is a way to have kids go straight. Kids can get involved in drugs or get into the wrong crowds because there isn’t much for kids to do, so we try to fill that need. We have many issues in this community, so we’re trying to be what kids are missing. It’s being Continued on page 11

that person they can count on when needed, being a father figure, being a teacher, a coach. It’s trying to take care of every need

as possible,” Vernon said. To do that, the organizations is providing local youth with more positive outlets. What may have started as a basketball program, is now expanding into much more for boys and girls from elementary school through high school. In addition to the basketball team, which takes the kids to tournaments across the city, and even to other states, they offer opportunities for the kids to work out to help them stay in shape. The organization has also introduced literacy programs and even has a monthly book club for the kids. They also give kids opportunities to dress up, helping them buy suits and ties, and take them on a night on the town. A recent trip involved taking some of the program’s boys on the ferry to Wall Street, followed by a dinner where they learned a few lessons about etiquette. “They felt like rock stars,” Vernon said. “You really get to see them become the men we want them to be.” The organization is also becoming more involved in community events, promoting civic engagement and mentoring their kids to become leaders. They also partner with other organizations, so the kids have access to things like tutors to help them with school. One parent that has seen the benefits firsthand is Tina Smith, whose 12-year-old daughter, Tierra Hendricks, has been active with Team Crate since May 2017. “Two years ago, my daughter was 40 pounds heavier,” she said, pointing out her healthy daughter dribbling a basketball down the court. “Healthwise, it’s helped her a lot. Scholastically, she had always been an average

student, but now, she has high honors. On her state math test, she used to score a two. Now she’s a level four,” she said about the Waterside student. “She’s always been a shy kid, but now she’s more of a leader. Her leadership skills have really come out because of this. If it wasn’t for Team Crate, none of this would be remotely possible.” Team Crate/ Far Rock Strong has reached kids mostly by word of mouth and through volunteering at various locations, but their impact has been big so far. Banjo estimates that there are more than 150 kids currently in the program, but says they’ve probably reached about 350 so far. However, they’re now making more of an effort to reach even more kids on the peninsula. Banjo and Vernon came out to the last Community Board 14 meeting to let the community know about their programs and goals and this week, they connected with CB14’s Youth Services Committee to go into more detail about how they’d like to work even deeper with the community and advocate for what local youth really need. Team Crate/ Far Rock Strong’s programs have come at no cost to the kids, as the volunteers have covered many costs out of pocket, along with the help of parents that have contributed and some discretionary funding from Councilman Donovan Richards’ office. However, the organizers say they’ll be expanding their fundraising efforts in the future so they can do even more for the kids. At the end of the day, it’s just about doing what’s right. “Our peninsula has been divided for a very long time, from uptown and downtown. Our goal is for one peninsula. At about 2: 30 p.m., a crew came and took all the garbage away but left debris on the boardwalk. They didn’t bother to sweep or shovel the remains and they did NOT put a bag in the bin. They worked their way down the boardwalk, removing trash that had been there for three days! This is not acceptable. We live here and still enjoy our boardwalk and beaches. There is no excuse. Growing Concern Dear Editor: While riding my bike to work this morning, I found garbage thrown all over the boardwalk from Beach 116th all the way through the 80s. Something needs to be done. Where are our elected officials? Where is the Parks Department? Also, there are now homeless setting up residency on the benches on the boardwalk. The homeless are also under the restrooms and lifeguard stations along the boardwalk. They are parked in front of the Post Office and all along Beach 116th Street. This is becoming a serious problem. Vans to Bring Professional Surf Festival to Rockaway By Katie McFadden

If you want to watch professional surfers take to the waves and show off their skills on a longboard, Beach 92nd Street is the place to be from October 3 through 6. The Vans Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational and Festival is coming to town. Many know Vans as the skateboard shoe brand that regularly sponsors skateboard, snowboarding, BMX and surfing teams, and even the rock festival, Warped Tour. Since 2010, the company has also sponsored the Duct Tape Invitational and Surf Festival, presented by world longboarding champion Joel Tudor. In its debut year, the festival came to New York, but on the Other End—Montauk. With two to four stops each year, the festival has been everywhere from China to Europe to Australia and various coastal towns around the U.S., but nearly 10 years lat-

give Rockaway some love and give everyone some of that city element to surf in,” Tudor said. The Vans Duct Tape festival brings a weekend of celebrating surf craftsmanship, creativity and innovation. The highlight of the festival is a world-class longboard competition for men and women, honoring equal prize purses across each division. This competition will showcase 32 of the best longboarding talents from around the world. Among the competitors are renowned surfers Andy Nieblas, Ryan Burch, Harrison Roach, Chloe Calmon and Kassia Meador, and Duct Tape veterans Alex Knost, Justin Quintal, Karina Rozunko and Honolua Blomfield. So if you enjoy watching impressive surfing, this contest is not one to miss. The contest will be held on Beach 92nd Street from October 3 through 5, with the Finals on Saturda, October 5. When the contests will be held depends on Mother Nature and the Atlantic Ocean. While the surf contest participants are locked in, there will be opportunities for the public to experience. New to the festival is a Vans Movie Night, an evening dedicated in honor of the talented women on the Vans surf team. This event will be held on Friday, October 4, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club (302 Beach 87th Street). There will be a premiere of film projects

by surfers Ainara Aymat, LeAnn Curren, Karina Rozunko, and Hanna Scott. Then the following night, October 5, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Vans will present Alex Knost’s short-film, “Tan Madonna” at the Rockaway Brewing Company (415 Beach 72nd Street). Sunday, October 6 will be all about the community. The day will be dedicated to letting the community try out boards presented by New York resident surfer Pat Schmidt, pro skater Andrew Allen, longboard style maven Karina Rozunko and surfer/artist Alex Knost. They’ll be presenting a library of their own hand-shaped custom surf boards to share with the public for open board demos, and eventually live permanently at local New-York surf destination, Bunger. Fans and spectators will be able to experience riding these board along with some of their favorite professional surfers and skaters on Beach 92nd Street. The handmade boards likely won’t feature any duct tape. According to Tudor, the name of the festival pays homage to its humble beginnings. “In the beginning, we had this initial group of ragged surfers that would use duct tape as a sealer for their boards. They didn’t have brand new boards. But since then, this event has grown and we’ve been able to grow from two festivals to four a year and it inspired all these offshoots and caught the attention of the World Surf League, which is adjusting their own surfing rules for longboard events based on our event’s success,” Tudor said. Tudor hopes everyone comes out to enjoy the events. “Come on down! I hope everyone enjoys it. I don’t think there’s ever been a professional surfing event in Rockaway, so it’s going to be really cool,” he said. This past Tuesday, September 24, the same day Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a $19M investment to support community-based Census 2020 education and organization, the Rockaway Women for Progress (RWFP), hosted the forum, #ROCKAWAY COUNTS - Preparing for the 2020 Census at P.S./M.S. 183. The school’s auditorium included local residents, Senator Joseph Addabbo, other representatives and a surprising visit from former councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley. The keynote speaker was Julie Menin, the Census director for NYC, and though she offered some vital information, it was the panelists in the fireside chat,

moderated by RWFP’s Josette Grippo, who got the conversation ignited. The key point was how Rockaway’s lack of response in the 2010 Census (56%), left millions on the table that could have been used towards decent healthcare, transportation, disaster relief, better schools and vital services for seniors and children. Miller offered an arsenal of information that spotlighted why participation in the 2020 Census is vital for every resident living on the peninsula and Broad Channel. “Queens is the most diverse community in not just NYC, but probably the country with over 196 languages spoken in the borough. Nineteen languages are spoken just in the Rockaway peninsula alone. The challenges faced are not just diversity, but now that the Census is going to be offered online, that’s going to present a host of challenges for families that don’t have broadband internet,” Miller said. However, she reassured attendees that there are already plans in the works to offset that challenge. According to Miller, every library in the city is going to have computer services avail-

Miller answered, “This online rollout is going to be reliable and safe. There are only 10 questions, and you won’t be asked for private information like your social security or email address,” Miller said. Another interesting question presented by the audience was if someone presses the “Back” button, will the Census submission be counted twice? Miller answered, “Overcounting does happen, but we have experts who are going to be monitoring this very closely. However, even in the past when everything was paper-based, overcounting happened. The 2020 Census will also include some additional questions to further help ensure that everyone in the household is only counted once and in the right place. For example, many households include members who live there on a part-time basis, such as college students who live away from home for a por-

tion of the year or children who divide time between parents, who are separated or divorced.” One attendee asked about how homeless people and those who live in a temporary housing situation are counted. Miller answered, “People who lost their homes due to a foreclosure, are in college, a nursing home, a homeless shelter or living on the street will still be counted. We have workers who visually identify individuals living on the streets. Plus, homeless shelters and nursing homes are required to report who live in the residence. There are many things put in place to make sure we strive our best to count everyone.” Elaine Short from Far Rockaway’s NAACP brought up why communities of color are reluctant to fill out the census in years past. “It’s a matter of trust. We feel we are not getting our equal portion. If we feel that our local politicians are not advocating for us and we are still getting the short end of the stick, what is the point? However, the NAACP is mobilizing

We are out there canvassing in all the boroughs,” Short said, pointing to her t-shirt that stated, “If we fight, we win!” Other facts revealed were: Young children were more likely to be missed in the 2010 Census than people in other age groups. Regarding whether someone has a disability, the 10 questions on the census do not give the opportunity to indicate that. So how does the special-needs community get funding? The answer—there is a 10-page document that could be submitted to the Census Bureau. Many questions loom about the 2020 Census, and Menin was sure to highlight how her office was able to eliminate one question—the one about citizenship. The Census will kick off on March 12, 2020. Model Patient I have written previously about the need for keen powers of observation in the field of medicine. I referred to Sherlock Holmes and his creator, the physician Arthur Conan Doyle. There have always been battles in medicine between those who advocate for observation and those who favor textbooks and learning. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., who was a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, once wrote, “Let a student have illustrations, and just so surely he will use them at the expense

of the text.” The illustrations he was referring to were in Gray’s Anatomy. To become a physician, one must read and memorize lots of written text but must also balance that with illustrations. The picture in today’s column was drawn by Frank Netter in the 1970s. He was a famous medical illustrator and did most of the illustrations for Grant’s Anatomy, the textbook I used in medical school (it’s still on my office shelf ). It’s called The Pink Puffer. Close examination of it will reveal much detail,

including the patient’s disease. Note how he is sitting, with his elbows on the armrests in what’s called a tripod position. Note the muscle wasting and loss. By putting his elbows on the armrests, or knees if there were no armrests, he is elevating his shoulders and clavicles. This is called the thinker’s sign. It allows him to breath using his pectoralis muscles, rib muscles, and clavicular muscles, also known as using accessory respiratory muscles. Also note the pursed lips. By exhaling through pursed lips, he elevates his respiratory pressure, allowing him to breathe more easily and lower his carbon dioxide levels. This patient has severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, otherwise known as COPD or emphysema, most likely from smoking. One detail that is not in the picture is clubbing. Clubbing is widening and flattening of the fingernails and fingertips which occurs in response to lower oxygen levels and

higher carbon dioxide levels. But Netter was correct in this omission because clubbing is rare in COPD but common in chronic bronchitis. Those

with chronic bronchitis are often referred to as blue bloaters, which this patient clearly is not. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, or to again quote Yogi Berra: “You can observe a lot by watching.” Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

HABITS After eliminating a habit of mine about two months ago, my friend lent me the book, “The Power of Habit, Why We Do What We Do In Life and Business,” by Charles Duhigg. What an eye opener! So many things we do every day are habits. We don’t even think about them. Some are ok, good, harmless; others are not ok, not good and harmful to our health and well-being. We usually have a good idea of what may not be good for us, but the days go by and we may give some thought to making a change and may-

be try a few times, but it just doesn’t stick. Why is this so? Duhigg explains in the book that a habit forms a loop: cue, routine, reward. We can pretty easily identify the routine and the reward—it is the cue that is a little harder to figure out. Some cues may seem impossible to figure out because they could be deep-rooted in emotional experiences from long ago. But changing the routine could lead to changing the habit and begin some selfstudy regarding the cue. What causes me to do that over and

over again? What is the trigger? The first step, in my view, is by believing that you would be better off in some facet or facets of your life without doing this. “You leave old habits behind by starting with the thought, ‘I release the need for this in my life.'" - Wayne Dyer. This belief is like an intention and draws towards us the energy needed to accomplish the task of eliminating/changing/replacing a habit. And, in my experience, puts people in our way who have either gone through similar experiences or are thinking about it. That kind of support can be one-time or over time, but, it is support that is very beneficial to making the change. Duhigg in the above referenced book, talks about “keystone habits.” These matter most because when there are changes in these habits, many other things are affected. For example, cutting down or eliminating sugar or alcohol leads to better health. Better health leads to mental acuity. Mental acuity leads to a fuller life.

If there is something you know you want to change and it seems like a habit, it is! Start by breaking it down to the loop Duhigg talks about, then identify the routine you want to change or eliminate. There is no one way; it has to work for you. And, even if it takes a while, it will eventually take hold as long as you believe in it. If you are just going through the motions, it will not take hold. If you wholeheartedly believe that your life will be better in whatever ways you outline, you will have the potential and the power to do it. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

$139M Project to Improve Far Rockaway’s Infrastructure Begins Far Rockaway’s infrastructure is on its way to an upgrade. On Wednesday, September 18, Deputy Mayor Vicki Been and Councilman Donovan Richards joined with numerous City agencies and elected officials today to break ground on a $139 million project that will transform and revitalize Downtown Far Rockaway, bringing new streets with new pedestrian space, landscaping and green infrastructure plus improved stormwater drainage to an area of Queens that has not seen large infrastructure investments in decades. “This historic $139 million investment in Downtown Far Rockaway’s infrastructure is a critical component for the future success of our community,” Richards said. “These long overdue investments will bring new streetscapes, plaza space, green infrastructure and improved stormwater drainage that will ensure a more pedestrian friendly Far Rockaway that can better manage future storms while also beautifying the commercial cor-

ridors and the transportation hub of the peninsula.” The project, which began construction this week and is scheduled to take three years to complete, is designed to comprehensively reinvigorate a neighborhood that was recently rezoned to allow for more housing, increased economic opportunity and better transportation options. Work will take place in an area of roughly 25 blocks, centered around the local business district and transportation hub at Mott and Central avenues, where a new library is already under construction. The project was designed and phased to closely align with over 2,000 affordable housing units under construction and planned over several developments. Streets throughout the downtown area will be completely rebuilt and in many cases, realigned to ease the flow of traffic and enhance pedestrian safety in conjunction with Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero goals. About 7,000 feet of new curbs will be

installed along with more than 83,000 square feet of new concrete sidewalks. The landscape will be further transformed with new green infrastructure including rain gardens to help with the natural absorption of stormwater and other measures to minimize impacts on nearby wetlands and Jamaica Bay. Work will be performed in two phases of 21 months and then 13 months, beginning with new storm sewers near Horton Avenue. More than two miles (11,000 feet) of new storm sewers ranging in size from 12 inches in diameter up to 13.5 feet high by 4.5 feet wide will eventually be installed to improve local drainage. More than 120 new catch basins will be installed to capture storm water and direct it to the new storm sewers. The project will also upgrade about 11,000 feet of existing sanitary sewers with new pipes ranging from 10 to 36 inches in diameter and replace about 10,000 feet of aging water mains with new pipes from eight to 20 inch-

es in diameter. At least 39 new fire hydrants will be installed to enhance local fire protection. Also planned for the Phase 1 area is a new pedestrian plaza spanning from Beach 21st to Beach 22nd streets, adjacent to the Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue subway station. The new plaza will cover about 15,000 square feet – or more than one-third of an acre – and will include a stage for events, benches and other seating, trees and planters, tables and chairs, a water fountain, bike racks, wayfinding signage and an automated public toilet, all set above a distinctive paving pattern on the ground. To manage the needs of residents and businesses during construction, DDC has two Community Construction Liaisons (CCL) assigned to the project who will work on-site to keep the neighborhood apprised of construction progress, coordinate street closures and utility shutoff and arrange special requests such as deliveries to local homes and businesses.

Despite these dwindling signs of summer; I can assure you, that The Summer of 2019 is no longer with us. Before you know it, it will be dark by 5 p.m. and you will be huddled up inside watching weathermen sensationalize seasonal snow storms. It may be welcome at first. After all, the community magically managed to squeeze an entire year’s worth of events into a two-anda-half month time frame. A degree of fatigue and relief is natural. However, before you know it, you will be praying for the weather to break, and the madness to begin again. Madness was certainly in full stock this Saturday, as The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade threw the 5th Annual Poseidon’s Parade. The event continues to swell and grow, and seems to be taking on a life of its own. Once again, the weather was absolutely magnificent. Sunny skies, a gentle breeze from the west, and large barreling waves from Hurricane Humberto set the backdrop perfectly for the nautical-themed event. My coverage of the event began at Caracas. The BEasy Band was performing to the rapidly building costumed crowd. I noticed a moment of panic from Brigade Captain Geoff Rawling early on as the trailer carrying Whalemina had sprung a flat. Luckily for Geoff, and the entire brigade itself, via the transitive property, a superhero sprung from the moment of darkness and saved the day. DJ Mouse

squeaked into action and provided some magic with some sort of miracle flat tire fix kit. Before the news of the flat reached the boardwalk, the whale was back on her wheels. This early hiccup would not set the tone for the day, as the parade kicked off flawlessly. Whalemina drove up Shorefront Parkway as music from DJ Sherif filled the air. Perhaps this will be the start of a motorized portion of the parade, which can run parallel to the boardwalk. Only time will tell. Meanwhile, the action on the boardwalk was magical and intense. This year’s event had the largest amount of participants, as well as the largest group of spectators. As the parade is slowly becoming one of Queens’ iconic events, Chris Rudolph and Alex Cannon must frantically meet its growing registration demands. “Next year I would like to create some sort of movable desk that I can march in the parade with after registration is over,” Chris happily exclaimed to a building crowd of strangers. “You just wait and see!” he proclaimed like a cartoon villain. I marched alongside the front of the parade where the prom king and queen greeted the gleeful viewers. Katie and Bryan were escorted by Siobhan Lyons rocking a 10ft tall inflatable squid outfit, and parade crowd control expert, Bettina Hornung. Bettina rocked some scandalous Madonna glam, and dazzled the crowd with her moves that doubled as parade pacing and crowd control. What a talented diva! Speaking of divas, brigade queen and new mom, “Casey Butler,” who wore a dress made from used baby onesies and a crown made of recycled baby products quickly followed. Escorted by three unnamed NYC lifeguards and “Nanna Anna,” she proudly pushed her son, Continued on page 29

As the entourage reached the judges, I grabbed a spot next to Judge Tara Vasselman, where I could grub some of their many bribes and catch the parade. This year’s parade featured some memorable groups. The 119 Tiki Bar brought The Belmont Stakes to the boardwalk. Dressed like seahorses, the group raced up and down the boards as a thickly bearded Greek man played incessantly on a trumpet. What are the odds! Bungalow Bar brought home the Best Bar trophy with “Cowabungalow.” The ninja turtles shredded up the boards on their way to bribing the judges with green jello shots. They may have had some help from Judge Ceddy Ced, who donned a “Homie the Clown” costume as he shouted, “Say No Mo,’” to parade-goers from his judging stand.

“101 Dolphins” represented crowd favorite Beach 101 in a massive display of sea mammal magic. The crowd cheered rabidly as a touching tribute to Miss Colombia filled the boardwalk with love. Dozens of paraders dressed up like Queens' beloved Oswaldo. His spirit certainly lives on in events like these. Kyle Wade, snagged “Best Individual” while paying tribute to this truly inspirational person. RIP Miss Colombia. ers. As DJ Kuff Daddy Dollar$ provided the beats, children were treated to free face painting, art games, and mermaid trapeze performers. Groups waited in line to take pictures atop Whalemina. From the top of the Whale, you could see all of the beautiful floats posted up on the boardwalk. John Cori’s massive rainbow brought size, symmetry and artistic style to the masses. MC Jimmy Dowd, who had just narrated the entire parade from a borrowed megaphone (thanks Miller!), announced the

winners. The entire plaza was filled with the summer spirit that makes Rockaway the best beach town around. The homemade trophies were handed out, and the masses spilled into the many after-parties and musical concerts in the area. Vic Thrill, featuring Danny Mulvanerty and Bobby Butler, brought the pirate energy to Rustwoods. The crowd downed Rockapulco Gold, the official beer of Poseidon’s parade as Squid put the night to bed with two rocking sets. Once again, Rockaway came out to play in a big way. The Mermaid Brigade is grateful to everyone who helped. Many people come through each year in their own way to make this a magical moment. It would be impossible to document and thank everyone who has helped. Having The Rockaway Times as an official sponsor has pushed the event to the next level. Every Kid Outdoors Program Begins Fall 2019

Are you in fourth grade? Do you have a child in the fourth grade? If so, you can get a free entry pass for you and your family to visit all National Parks for the entire year! Stop by the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Gateway National Recreation Area, on Sunday, October 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and pick up your pass. Join National Park Service rangers for a day filled with adventure. Learn about the special changes taking place in the fall season at Jamaica Bay, such as bird migration, fall equinox, hibernation (both plants and animals), fish migration, and weather. The annual pass which is good through Aug. 31, 2020, provides free entrance to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas. The pass does not cover

expanded amenity fees such as camping or boat rides. If you are unable to make the October 6 event, fourth-grade students can visit the Every Kid Outdoors website (https:// everykidoutdoors.gov/fourth_ graders.htm), participate in a short educational activity, and download a voucher. Honey Mustard Chicken Recipe By Sharon Feldman

(From Simply Recipes) Serves: 4-6 If you don’t want to eat skin-on chicken, still cook the dish with the skin on, even if you don’t eat it. The skin will protect the meat from drying out. Ingredients 1/4 to 1/3 cup Dijon mustard 1/4 to 1/3 cup honey 1 Tbsp olive oil 2-3 pounds chicken thighs (or legs) Salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 sprigs rosemary (or a generous sprinkling of dried rosemary) Directions Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mustard, honey, and olive oil. Add a pinch of salt and taste. Add more salt and mustard un-

til you get the flavor where you want it. Salt the chicken lightly and lay the pieces skin-side up in a shallow casserole dish. Spoon the honey mustard sauce over the chicken. Place the rosemary sprigs in-between the pieces of chicken. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the thighs read 175° on a meat thermometer, or the juices run clear when the meat is pierced with a knife. Remove the casserole pan from the oven. Sprinkle some freshly ground black pepper over the chicken before you serve.

Press book and find out. In the novel, “Black Autumn,” Jeff Kirkham and Jason Ross weave an apocalyptic tale of a post atomic attack on the United States. Again, hewing to the mantra of writing about what you know, Kirkham, a former Green Beret with vast experience in survival tactics, organizes a community and teaches them to move on. Kirkham served several tours in combat zones as a Green Beret and has amassed a great background in survival and tactics that are put to the test in this novel. Ross, while not in the same category as Kirkham, is an experienced hunter and outdoorsman with a keen knowledge of what to do in the wilderness and under extreme circumstances. Both put themselves into the story and you move along with them under adverse conditions and feel as though you are a participant as they strive to save a community driven apart by a nuclear attack. Friends turn on friends. People with little to no background in survival attempt to take control. Families are separated and normally peaceful groups turn violent. Much of the action takes place within a normally peaceful and very orderly Mormon community. But as food and supplies dwindle, Kirkham is forced to make hard decisions in order to save his own group. The narration brings the reader into the conflict and the absolute desire to survive the nuclear attack. This is a story that could have been ripped from the headlines with today’s promise of potential conflict from such regimes as the fundamentalists in Iran. “Black Autumn,” published by Defiance Press, is available online and in book stores.

A Parade Fit For Poseidon

They did it again. For the fifth year in a row, the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade ended summer with a bang with their annual Poseidon’s Parade. Creativity overflowed the boardwalk on Saturday, September 21 at the parade which drew the most participants and biggest crowds yet. No one was envious of the judges who although had the best seats in the house, also had the tough job of pick-

ing the winners, as competition was tough. However, they somehow did it. Where Worlds Converge, an exhibit of photographs by Micah Bochart, will open on September 29. The exhibit opening and reception will be from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Broad Channel. The opening reception is free and open to the public. This free exhibit will be on display for two months. Bochart, who will be at the reception, is a New York-based photographer, videographer and editor. He was raised in Haines, Alaska, a small town with a population of 1713. His early projects

included filming multi-day ceremonial events, which featured a reintroduction of injured bald eagles back into the wild, for the Tlingit Tribe in Alaska. He now lives with his wife in Queens. Bochart’s upbringing and background have influenced his view of the world. Nature reclaiming the built world, young people discovering nature, and nature thriving are central themes for this exhibit. The juxtaposition of nature against the backdrop of New York City is not only the story of Gateway, but also the story of this exhibit.

Rockaway Guy Takes Over WeWork

50 YEARS AGO – FIRE STRUCK LENNY’S

On September 26th, 1969, Lenny’s Amusements also known as Lenny’s Fascination, was destroyed by fire. The big attraction was on the boardwalk between Beach 34th and Beach 35th Street. Urban renewal plans (which never happened) prevented the attraction from reopening and it was lost forever. WeWork is a real estate company that provides shared workspaces generally for tech companies and small startups. (You may have learned of it through one of our columnists, Lou Pastina, who wrote about the company in 2017). Just last month, the company announced its plans to go public, with the goal of issuing an IPO (Initial Public Offering) by the end of this year. The announcement brought great public scrutiny over the company’s finances and its CEO, Adam Neumann, who was known for a lavish lifestyle. The uproar prompted Neumann to step down as CEO and Artie Minson to step up, joining Sebastian Gunninham as co-CEO. Minson, recently described by the Financial Times, as “an Irish

Catholic from Queens” was born and raised in Belle Harbor. He attended St. Francis de Sales, Loyola High School, and Georgetown University. He has continued to support Rockaway groups, such as the RIBS. Minson has an accounting background with executive experience at AOL, Time Warner and other well-known companies. According to many reports, steering WeWork to profitability will be challenging but in a statement Minson and Gunningham said, “Our core business is strong, and we will be taking clear actions to balance WeWork’s high growth, profitability and unique member experience while also evaluating the optimal timing for an I.P.O.”
