Channel View Remembers Lamine Sarr By Katie McFadden

Monday, September 24 was a day of mourning and celebration at Channel View School for Research (CVSR) as fellow students honored the life of Lamine Sarr, who drowned in Rockaway Beach, on September 15. The CVSR community invited Sarr’s family to a ceremony to remember the late CVSR senior with music and dance performances, photo slideshows and stories about the local teen that will be missed by many. On Monday, students from CVSR, plus some classes from the other schools of the Beach Channel Educational Campus, gathered in the auditorium for an assembly to remember Sarr. They were also joined by special guests—Sarr’s family. CVSR Principal Denise Harper-Richardson led the ceremony with some opening words about Sarr, saying he was “an accomplished musician who played percussion, an hon-

or student and he had a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. A moment of silence was then held, followed by the auditorium reciting CVSR’s “15 words to live by, which many say Sarr exemplified in his short life. Students then used their own words to describe Sarr, such as “motivated, uplifting, wild, funny and special. Student Devaughn Jackson then dedicated a song to Sarr as a slideshow featuring photos and videos of a smiling Sarr, flashed on a screen on stage. Seeing images of the son, brother, nephew and cousin proved

to be too much for Sarr’s family as some broke out in tears, while others excused themselves from the auditorium. Student Shamar Williams shared a story of a project that he worked on with Sarr and reminded those in attendance that, “If he were here, he would want us to keep our heads up and be strong. As Sarr’s family and fellow students tried to remain strong, the CVSR choir, to music played by the Rockaway Park High School band, sang emotional songs, “Time Adventure from the cartoon, Adventure Time, and Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again. The songs were followed by fellow students who shared poems and stories of Sarr. Many fought through tears as they reflected on the memories they shared with him. The CVSR Concert Band stood in front of the auditorium, as one of its members was notably missing. However, a photo of Sarr remained in his place as the band leader explained Sarr’s time with

the band. When Sarr joined in freshman year, he was first given the job of pushing around the cart for the bass player, yet he earned to do more. Eventually Sarr worked his way up to playing the bass drum, to the wood blocks, to the triangle and the cymbal, and was a vital part of the percussion section for the band. Last year, the band was invited to participate in the Six Flags Music Competition and the band, including Sarr, won second place in the high school division. At the front of the room stood a photo of Sarr holding up the trophy that the band took home. “Lamine will truly be missed. All the band members love him and will miss him, the bandleader said before the band dedicated two songs to Sarr, and the ceremony ended with a special dance performance by the D.R.E.A.M. Chasers Dance Team. There’s no doubt that Sarr will truly be missed by his family, the CVSR community and Rockaway.

TOP THIS

There’s an old saying, if your neighbor is laid off, it’s a recession. If you’re laid off, it’s a depression. It’s a matter of perspective —though some people have the perspective of a funhouse mirror. Always warped, always about them. You know the type, their troubles are always worse than yours and anybody else’s. They’re toppers. They’ve got to top you no matter what. You mention you got a bit of a sunburn and they have to tell you about the third-degree, skin-bubbling burn they got fifteen years ago. Don’t say you have a headache because they’ll have to tell you about the time they went “literally blind” when they came down with a migraine.

A lot of times, they’ll cut you off and say, “Mine was the worst.” You might gripe about a summer cold and they’ll say, “Oh, man, mine was the worst. I coughed for like three weeks and then my wife got it. And then my neighbor and…” You don’t hear what else they say because they’ve hijacked your cold and made it about them. Sometimes they’ll even try and top you with somebody’s episode. I mean, sometimes you don’t gripe or even say a word. Your car could have a scratch. You might be wearing a Band-Aid. These unfortunate things are just a green light for a topper. “I see that scratch on your car. This guy I know flipped his car on the Jersey Turnpike. They had to get the jaws of life to get him out. You shoulda seen his car.” If they see your Band-Aid, you’re about to hear how they

or somebody they knew survived a gunshot wound. They can’t help themselves. You might mention that you visited the Bronx Zoo and they’ll respond by saying they went on an African safari. But since I’m the worst, a hypocrite whenever convenient, I can engage in topperism. Even worse, I speak before I think. But I was not a topper down south last week. And nobody can top how much restraint it took. The son who remains nameless goes to college in Wilmington, North Carolina, where Hurricane Florence struck. He managed to get home for a few days, escaping the worst of the storm. After Flo moved out, a few days of sunshine followed and then he and I headed down to see what was left of his off-campus shack. I rented a monstrous, bigass pick-up truck to bring

supplies. Well, supplies were really just a cover. I just wanted to go full redneck and show up in the south with my baseball cap and bright red pick-up. I wanted to blend. My pick-up truck, my baseball cap, my work boots. I brought a generator so I could hook up a radio to play country music and bible call-in shows. Damn right. I thought I was legit but that coral, peach, whatever-color Rockaway Times t-shirt I wore gave me away. I got looks like I just came in from Mars, or San Francisco. My son’s shack was a soaking mess. Mold was everywhere. He said it was no big deal. I said it was a disaster. And then he went and topped me: It’s not as bad as Sandy. Ok, just don’t say that to anybody around here. Especially while I’m wearing this shirt.

CB14 Back in Full Swing After Summer By Katie McFadden After a summer hiatus, Community Board 14 came back in full swing at the Knights of Columbus on Monday, September 24. In addition to Budget Committee and Parks Committee reports, the meeting was jam-packed with updates and gripes. The meeting kicked off with Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato providing updates on some of the work she’s doing, including introducing legislation that would give coverage to all of those not currently covered under programs that provide help for people getting sick from 9/11-related illnesses, like health and hospital workers that may have been near Ground Zero. She also said she’ll re-introduce legislation in January to eliminate the toll on the Cross Bay Bridge. Manuel Silva of Councilman Donovan Richards’ office was on hand to present a much-deserved Proclamation to Portia

Dyrenforth for all of her service and hard work as Parks’ former Rockaway Administrator. Dyrenforth was thanked several times by different speakers throughout the meeting. CB14 chair Dolores Orr mentioned the recent drowning of Lamine Sarr, 17, and reiterated the need to introduce water safety courses to schools across the city. She also spoke about the work that took place along the A train line this summer, noting that it was completed on time, but a steel wall can now be seen at the Rockaway Dog Park, so the MTA has accepted a request for ARF-ARF or another group to paint the wall with a mural to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Continuing with the MTA, Orr also spoke about the recent change to the Q22 bus route. She reminded the room that CB14 heavily rejected the plan, but it still went forward. The plan now has Q22 buses stopping in front of the Dunkin Donuts on Beach 116th Street, which is causing disrup-

tions. Orr said she witnessed a Q22 letting passengers out onto the street, blocking traffic to the street corridor, as another bus was already parked at the stop. She sent photos to the MTA but has not yet received a response. Next up, Captain Louron Hall, the new head of the 100th Precinct, introduced himself and addressed some concerns. Captain Hall said that the 100th Precinct has seen the largest crime reduction in the city in the past year, with a 24 percent reduction in crime, or 85 fewer crimes than last year. He also spoke about a new initiative starting in November, for both of Rockaway’s precincts, in which officers will be partnering with the Department of Education to run a football program with youth, ages 9 to 11, that have been identified as at risk, in order to keep them busy and off the streets. The program will begin with 80 boys and will expand to include a basketball program for girls starting in January. A question was raised

about the recent incidents of local police seemingly forcing block parties to shut down early. Captain Hall explained that this has been an issue of party organizers not filing the proper permits, and that while he insists he’s not trying to prevent people from having fun, rules must be followed and going forward, officers will explain to organizers, what can and can’t be done according to the specific permit, before the party happens so that there are no violations. Many signed up for public speaking at the meeting. With CB14 being on hiatus over the summer, many brought up the biggest issue of the season—the beach closures, and requested the urgency for the city to act and have a plan for the next beach season, including adding more sand to the beaches. Others also brought up the recent drowning and suggested that the lifeguard season be extendContinued on page 14

Long Island? ***** They don’t seem to be wasting too much time getting started on the new firehouse planned for Beach Channel Drive and Beach 116th Street. The building was acquired by the City through eminent domain (compensation to the owner was to be determined by the court). The City applied to condemn the building in July and now fencing has gone up. We asked the FDNY for an update. We’ll keep you posted. ***** The same owners of the La Quinta Hotel on Beach 43rd Street will be opening a Best Western in Far Rockaway, near the Mott Avenue subway station. We expect the City to be booking rooms at the place soon after it opens. ***** Saturday, October 13 is scheduled to be a day of beers and beats. The firstever Rockapulco Gold Music

On Saturday September 22, the 1968 graduating class of St. Francis de Sales held their 50th reunion. Following 5:30 Mass at the Church, where they remembered their fifteen deceased classmates, they retired to Jameson's Pub for a collation. Many classmates came from far and wide, although many still resided in Rockaway. A good time was had by all and old acquaintances were renewed.

A Parade Fit for Poseidon

From a Ship of Fools to Eco Warriors to Magical, Mystical Unicorn Mermaids, the 4th Annual Poseidon’s Parade was another one for the books. Dozens of groups, individuals and nautical floats, marched down the boardwalk from Beach 106th to Beach 95th, to officially end the summer season. Several entrants went home with prizes such as Healy’s Pub, which took the award for Best Bar, and the Ship of Fools, which took home Best Float for their monstrous, animated pirate ship. We reached out to organizers for a full list of winners, but did not receive it by press time. However, we did receive tons of photos! So many that we couldn’t include all of them. However, there will be another chance to show them off as Poseidon’s Parade will be a category in next year’s Rockaway Times Photo Contest! Congratulations to the organizers for once again putting on an amazingly fun event!

ed through weekends in September to prevent such incidents. A representative from Queens Law Associates spoke about some of the services they offer, like representing low-income people charged with crime and providing family legal services. Tracy Obolsky, owner of the Rockaway Beach Bakery, near Beach 87th Street and Rockaway Beach Blvd., spoke about the horrendous, unsafe traffic conditions that have occurred in front of her store, due to ongoing construction. She told the Board that the work has been on hiatus for several weeks and it is severely impacting her and other businesses. Anna Palmer, who lives near Seagirt Ave., spoke about several lots being used as dumping grounds in the area, and nothing being done because they are private properties. Another resident who lives on Beach 43rd also spoke about lots being neglected and overrun with weeds

and garbage. She urged others to call 311 so something can be done about them. Regina Johnson, who is trying to open a new charter school in Far Rockaway, Legacy Academy, spoke briefly about why she is opening the school and requested that others become involved so that it is specifically geared towards students living in Far Rockaway. A representative from Councilman Richards’ office spoke about some upcoming events like the Bayswater Fall Festival, happening from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on October 14, and the upcoming Rockaway Beats Cancer Walk with the Arverne Cancer Support Group on October 20. Plus Richards’ office will be holding classes on how to become a 501c3 group and grant writing seminars. For more information, his office can be reached at 718-471-7014. Florence Ferguson spoke about some of the new Beach 59th Playground design and the desire to keep the fence height the same as it is currently. She said a letter has been written to

JK Canepa spoke about an upcoming meeting on Offshore Wind Power. People can learn about the project that could be coming to Rockaway at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 27 at Peninsula Library. Another woman named Lee then spoke about the ongoing fight against the Williams Pipeline and provided some updates such as recent pipeline accidents and political staffers that are involved with Williams. Updates can be found by following Sane Energy Project on social media. Rick Horan spoke about the inaugural season of the Community Boathouse’s kayaking program at Beach 88th, and the new Parks design for the park. He suggested that the temporary kayak storage facilities that are currently being used, be incorporated into the new plan to store people’s personal kayaks for a fee, which will be used to fund a future bathroom for the park.

Following public speaking, the Budget Committee spoke briefly about some of CB14’s budget items, many of which are very old, as the city has no obligation to follow the suggestions, but a new item has been requested, to fund sand replenishment from Beach 91st to Beach 101st. The Parks Committee reported on the 10 Parks capital project plans for Rockaway, as detailed in the September 20 edition of The Rockaway Times. Representatives from Parks said that most of the amendments requested for the plans, can be done without issue, and they provided an updated that a study has already been done and additional lighting can be added to some Parks projects that were requested to have more lighting. All of the projects were voted on the by the Community Board, with most passing unanimously. The last project, the Beach 88th Bay Breezy Park and kayak launch, needs to be reworked and will be voted on at the next CB14 meeting in October.

St. Francis Prep: Education, Tradition and Excellence St. Francis Prep boasts a strong core academic program and a faith-based education. For 160 years, Prep students have received an outstanding preparation for college with many opportunities for spiritual and social development, while being challenged and encouraged to achieve their potential. At the heart, our academic program is a strong traditional core curriculum. Every student at Prep undertakes a sequence of rigorous college preparatory courses. Supplementing this rigorous core education, students also have the opportunity to enroll in advanced and specialty courses in every academic area, including Honors-level classes, Advanced Placement (AP) and College Credit courses. We also offer upper-level elective classes in fields of study, which include Business, Computer Science, Art, Music, Science Research and Religion. Our academic and extra-curricular program offerings exist on an unprecedented scale—one that other schools simply can't match. Prep students have vast opportunities to pursue their interests on a higher level within the most modern, advanced, cutting-edge educational facilities in the area. Our dedicated and passionate faculty and staff are committed to providing quality instruction, with individual attention to the needs of every student. View our full course book at the school website: www.sfponline.org. As you look through the course book and the other materials on our web site, you will get a sense of the challenging and enriching courses and opportunities you can look forward to taking as a student at St. Francis Prep. After freshman year, selection for Honors classes is based solely on achievement in classes taken. This system rewards hard work and allows for a great deal of flexibility. St. Francis Prep students may be enrolled in one or several honors classes without the limitations of academic tracking. Therefore, from year to year, there is the potential for a student to move into and out of Honors classes. The ideals of our Catholic, Franciscan college preparatory education are based on helping stu-

dents develop their intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social abilities. • We field junior varsity and varsity teams in nearly every major sport and offer an extensive intramural program. • We sponsor about 80 clubs and activities, ranging from Model U.N., and Speech, Debate and Public Speaking Team to Language and Culture clubs. • We provide opportunities for spiritual growth and development for students of all religious traditions through a wide range of activities and programs including prayer and reconciliation services, service-learning opportunities, retreats and donation/fund drives to aid the less fortunate in our community. • We offer extensive opportunities for travel and study abroad. We like to say, “There is something for everyone here.” Our goal is to prepare students for both college and life; to be well-rounded individuals with critical thinking and problem-solving skills; and to be lifelong learners. St. Francis Prep’s success is evident in the accomplishments of our most recent graduates: The “Class of 2018” earned over $160 million dollars in merit scholarship awards at some of the finest academic institutions in the nation. But it’s also evident in the lives and actions of our alumni. Alumni benefactors from all generations have generously supported the Prep’s ongoing major Capital Improvement and Modernization program which has resulted in the creation of (1) Art Education Center (2) The Physical Education and Athletic Training Center (3) Completely renovated Science Classrooms and Labs (4) New Music Education and Practice facilities and (5) The funding of many named and memorial scholarships. The choice to attend St. Francis Prep means you become part of a rich tradition that includes the opportunity to forge life-long bonds of friendship; achieve academic excellence and become part of an active, spiritual community. “High School is four years; St. Francis Prep is forever.”

MEET LIME BIKE BRAND AMBASSADOR DANIEL CAMACHO By Kami-Leigh Agard

They are bright green, parked in various spots across the peninsula, and while some locals brand them as a fluorescent nuisance, for others, they have become a precious commodity for speedy commuting. However, these dockless LimeBikes serve up more than that, as they also serve as a source of income and learning for local youth. The Rockaway Times (RT) had the pleasure of chatting with one of these young people, Daniel Camacho, after observing him and his crew on the street stooped in front one of the bikes, fixing it. Camacho, aged 17, born and raised in Rockaway, is a senior at Channel View School for Research (CVSR), and works for Lime as a Brand Ambassador. When approached by the RT, he said that he and his team were swapping out a battery. Camacho then shared that his role as Lime’s Rockaway Brand Ambassador, is not just to promote us-

age of the bikes, safe riding and parking behavior, but through Lime’s GPS app, to locate the bikes, and remove them from places where they shouldn’t be parked. He also makes sure the batteries are working, the bikes are in good condition, and if a problem appears to be too technical for them to solve, he brings it up to Lime’s technical operations department. Camacho said he started with Lime as a volunteer with the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA). “When I first saw the LimeBikes in Rockaway this past July, I was intrigued. It was so interesting to me that you can just pull out your phone, scan a barcode and climb on a bike, he said. Camacho said he has been a volunteer with the RWA since the summer of 2015. “I was an active member of CVSR’s environmental club, and our advisor told us about RWA’s Shore Corps Program. The RWA has given so many students such as myself a

working experience for a positive cause — protecting and improving our local environment with activities like beach cleanups, beach plantings, education on ocean surges, and why our local dunes are constantly being depleted of sand. I really care about protecting our environment, and have learned how we mess it up, without actually being aware of what our actions are causing, he said.

Camacho said in 2017, he was awarded a specific role to boost the RWA’s social media presence amongst youth, to get them involved in helping the environment. He remarked, “People my age prefer Instagram because we like something quick and simple. The downside is that so much fake news is spread, but I guess we just have to be smart, and figContinued on page 17

ure out what is fact from fiction.” Then this past summer, Lime was tabling at a RWA event, and Camacho said he was immediately hooked. “Bike-sharing reduces carbon emissions, with the added boost of exercise. The Lime app shows you how many miles you’ve ridden and calories burned. It’s great. Also, it’s quick transportation for people going to and from the ferry, or the nearest subway or bus for transportation to work. For me, it’s a no brainer.” Camacho said after expressing interest in working for Lime, he took a mandatory Mechanics 101 class with the company. “In the class, we learned how to fix the brakes, how to swap the batteries, tools we would need, and how to use the app to locate the bikes and what areas we need to place them,” he said. When asked, what are the most bizarre places, he’s seen LimeBikes parked, Camacho laughed. “Besides the

app showing us the bikes are parked in people’s garages, in the sand, in the middle of the street or sidewalk; the craziest was one that was hung from a tree. It takes a lot of upper body strength to do that.” To make his job a bit easier Camacho hopes to make riders familiar with some Dos and Don’ts, on where not to park a Lime bike: Do not park a LimeBike in front of a car, in your garage, on the street, in the sand, in the bike lane on the boardwalk, in your building’s parking lot, on school grounds, and of course, do not hang it from a tree. Also, bike helmets are only required for children 13 years and under, but of course, are encouraged for anyone while riding the bike, especially the electric-assisted Lime Bikes, which can go up to 15 miles per hour. Gil Kazimirov, Lime’s NYC General Manager, said when he met Camacho and learned about his interests and passion for the environment and technology, he hired him immediately. “Hiring Daniel as a

Brand Ambassador was an easy decision. We started promoting Lime with local organizations like the RWA and the Rockaway Youth Task Force because we wanted to form alliances with the community and its stakeholders. The youth here have expressed so much interest in bike-sharing, and its positive impact on the environment. Also, as a pilot program, we get to learn the concerns of the community, what is actually needed, and what we need to improve,” Kazimirov said. When asked what Lime plans to do as the weather gets colder, and snow is on the horizon, Ka-

We are a pilot program with the Department of Transportation, so we are hoping to keep the bikes here, however, of course our riders’ safety is the priority, and in the meantime, we just want people to enjoy them.” As for Camacho, who has aspirations to pursue a degree in computer science, he shared that working for Lime has been a positive experience. “I’ve always been interested in computers and technology, curious about how a giant brick machine evolved into something you could now just slip in your pocket. Working with Lime has blessed me with invaluable experience, and I keep learning more and more about the technology. Plus with the added bonus of helping the environment and learning about other areas of the peninsula I had never been to, because of Lime I’ve been exposed to and learned a lot about not just technology, but Rockaway,” Camacho said.

Students in Far Rockaway and hundreds of others across Long Island went back to school in style thanks to PSEG Long Island. Over the summer, PSEG employees were encouraged to donate school supplies to the volunteer-based PSEG Long Island Employee Outreach Council’s (EOC) annual school supply drive. Thousands of boxes of crayons, pencils and pens, notebooks and binders, rulers, scissors, and other goodies were collected and

packed by two dozen employee volunteers. The various back-to-school items were loaded into backpacks and distributed by PSEG Long Island employee volunteers to a variety of grassroots agencies and organizations across Long Island and the Rockaways for area schoolchildren. One of the giveaways recently took place at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Far Rockaway. Several children received backpacks with supplies.

By Peter Galvin, MD

Atrial Fibrillation Atrial fibrillation (AF) is by far the most common disorder of the rhythm of the heart. The lifetime risk of developing it is about 37 percent for those over 55 years of age. The biggest risk from AF is developing a stroke from a blood clot from the heart. The clot forms in the corners of the upper heart chamber, or the atrium, because in AF this chamber does not contract, or beat. It just vibrates, or fibrillates, allowing blood in the chamber to form a clot. If the atrium goes back into normal rhythm and contracts, this

clot can be ejected out into the bloodstream where it often lodges in the brain. This is why most people with AF must be on lifetime anticoagulation, so clots cannot form. Those at the highest risk for stroke are those who have paroxysmal AF (PAF). In PAF, the heart goes in and out of AF. People with PAF often don’t realize they have it because often there are no symptoms. In addition, those with PAF often will not be in AF when they have an EKG, so the condition is not discovered, until it is too late.

Recently a fascinating study was published on diagnosing those with PAF and AF to reduce the risk of stroke. The study was huge, involving over 50,000 volunteers with an average age of 73 who were not diagnosed with AF. They wore a device that continuously monitored their EKG and heart rhythm for two weeks. Not surprisingly, the study found that many of them had AF and didn’t know it. What is fascinating to me is not the results of the study, which found pretty much the results that were expected, but the way the results were obtained. Until recently, continuously recording a person’s EKG required wearing a bulky recorder with wires and electrodes. The recording device was similar to a Sony Walkman (remember those?!) and, because of the electrodes, the wearer could not bathe or shower. Other, newer devices like event monitors have been developed but the device this study used is a

giant technological step forward. They used the iRhythm Zio, an FDA approved EKG recording device. It is a waterproof, single-use adhesive pad that sticks to the skin and records the EKG for up to two weeks. There are no wires or electrodes. Once the recording period is over, the pad is removed and the heart rhythm is examined by the cardiologist. What a neat, clean way to diagnose heart rhythm disorders. If you are over 55 and have had a stroke, heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, emphysema, obesity, or chronic kidney disease (all risk factors for AF), and you have not been diagnosed with AF, get to your doctor or cardiologist to have your risk of AF evaluated and, if found, treated. Stroke may often be the first sign of untreated AF. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Honoring Grief

Each day brings a forth a new thought, subject, theme in our lives. Waking up can be blissful, and at other times rather difficult, depending on your current situation. Yesterday, I wanted to write all about gratitude and how it promotes a feeling of joy and happiness. Waking up every day to simply say, thank you. It’s a nice way to start the day. But then I opened my book of poems on this day to “Honoring Grief ” by Pixie Lighthorse. I have never been able to read this in class because it is much too powerful for those people grieving for the loss of their loved ones. Teaching yoga can be fragile and sensitive, however, on the mat is where you can feel safe and comfortable. In stillness and silence, everything

comes up, but being there becomes a sanctuary. As yoga teachers, we hold space for our students, perhaps never fully understanding what they are going through unless they share their stories. On this one particular Sunday, I am aware of one of my student’s losing her beautiful mother, who lived a wonderful, long life, full of love and happiness. She is very sad and I too feel her pain and anguish of loss of her first love. I can only offer my hugs, words of compassion and a balanced class. On this day, I choose to go very slow and deliberate. There are many different levels, but we are here today for the healing of one’s soul. Loss can be paralyzing and so frightening. In the past week, there has been much loss and I am aware and feel sad. Many people come to their mats to find peace and solace for themselves. Others come for the physical aspect and yet

·

To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030 ads@RockawayTimes.com

others come for the spiritual part. There is something for everyone, but I believe the most important part is that we are all there for one another. So many stories have come through our doors at Ocean Bliss Yoga and we are simply there to support and honor each person’s path through compassion and support. Listening and being present to the person in front of you is important. You will miss the opportunity to hold space for that person if you don’t take the time to be aware. The following is what I read at the end of my classes this week as we transitioned into autumn. “Honoring Rites of Passage” by Pixie Lighthorse: “We are spilling over with gratitude today for divine support and presence in our lives. We need your energy to move through our transitions. We need creativity and motivation to find the healers who can help us honor ourselves when we change. Help us to

cherish the inevitable changes we face. Guide us in ceremony and celebration when our time comes. Teach us to honor the young ones when their bodies and minds shift and mature. Show us how to midwife the elders and the sick across the bridge and into the next dimension. Hold us close to you when we must leave old ways behind to embrace what is next for us. Remind us that change is not to be feared, but cradled in recognition. Surround us in your warmth and light and usher us into our new stages as precious children of the Earth, who never stop growing and do so because you inspire us to rise.” Grief is a process. Allowing, sitting with it, letting go, holding space—all part of the process. May you be Happy, May you be Healthy, May you be Free of Suffering and May you live with Ease.

RALLY WITH US FOR BEACH PROTECTION Four months ago, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver closed multiple beaches in Rockaway Beach due to severe erosion. He cited concern for the difficulties NYC Lifeguards would have keeping these beaches safe for swimming. Commissioner Silver also voiced his concerns that limited recreational beach space would lead to sunbathers and beachgoers migrating onto what is left of the already severely damaged protective sacrificial dune.

By closing the beaches of Rockaway Beach, the Commissioner, thankfully, has clearly acknowledged, on behalf of the City of New York, that the protection, which was recommended in New York City’s SIRR (Special Initiative for Recovery and Rebuilding), has been a complete and utter failure. This massive failure by the City of New York has left the neighborhoods of Far Rockaway, Edgemere, Arverne, Rockaway Beach, Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor and Neponsit all

highly vulnerable to severe and massive wave inundation during the next severe weather event. Obviously, if you’re from Rockaway and reading this, I’m preaching to the choir. I know this. We know this. Mitchell Silver knows this! As much as I’m not a huge fan of NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, I believe he does not know this! I honestly believe he has not been given clear and concise information of how vulnerable we now stand with the continued destruction of our poorly planned dune “protection!” I also believe the Mayor is being shielded from the devastating effects the beach closures have had on all of our commercial establishments, not to mention, our cultural way of urban beach life, which is so uniquely Rockaway! On Sunday, October 7 at 12 noon, the Rockaway Beach Civic Association will hold a press conference on the steps of New York City Hall, to give

Page 25 the Mayor a clear and concise message: 1. The Rockaway peninsula urgently needs sand on our beaches to stop erosion of our protective dunes, currently our only line of protection between our homes and the sea. 2. We absolutely cannot wait for 2020 for the Army Corps' Rockaway Reformulation Plan to begin. 3. Operating businesses adjacent to any closed beach is a financial death sentence and Rockaway businesses cannot withstand another year of New York City’s gross and negligent inaction to remedy the beach closures. 4. Waves at high tide are more damaging to dunes than the stray beachgoer. 5. We cannot waste another four months. 6. The Rockaway peninsula urgently needs sand on our beaches to stop erosion of our protective dunes, currently our only line of protection between our homes and the sea. I hope everyone will join us on the steps of City Hall.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Why OPT Direly Needs A School Bus Tracking App After a hectic summer, for many parents, the first day of school is gleefully anticipated, however, there is one bone of contention that always seems to mar our euphoria — school bussing. From no-show to late buses, buses that breakdown, buses that have no heat or air-conditioning, our children arriving home hours late — school buses have become the bane of our existence. And my biggest fear? Not knowing the

exact geographic location of where my non-verbal daughter with autism is on the bus route. However, there is a solution — A School Bus Tracking App. A member of Rockaway Beach Autism Families shared that the Law Offices of Regina Skyer & Associates, a law firm that advocates, mediates, and litigates on behalf of children with special education needs, is advocating for legislation to require the Department of Education’s Office

of Pupil Transportation (OPT) to provide authorized parents and school officials with access to the real-time GPS location of a child’s bus via an app. Also, they are demanding that “OPT be required to retain and disclose bus data at the request of a parent, because unfortunately, we believe that parents are sometimes not taken seriously when they complain,” stated the law firm’s September 21, 2018 blog post, “It’s Time for a School Bus Tracking App.” I am wholeheartedly — hook, line and sinker — on board with this legislation. In a September 15 article, The New York Post told the story of five-yearold Lystra Liu being taken on a four-hour bus ride before being dropped off at the wrong stop. According to the article, “Lystra was one of the legions of public and private school kids whose parents flooded a city hotline with 76,223 complaints — 32 percent more than the 57,575 last year — about late or noshow school buses since classes started…After the bus failed to pick up Lystra two mornings

The Rockaway Times in a row, Lystra’s mom asked the driver for her cell number to stay in touch. The driver refused, so the worried mom put a GPS tracker app on the kindergartner’s cell phone.” Many moons ago, when I was at the time working in Manhattan, and DOE ludicrously decided to place my daughter in a District 75 school in Bellerose, Queens (after I toured and requested what I considered top notch special education programs in Rockaway), my grandmother phoned to inform me that my daughter had not arrived from school. At this point, she was an hour late. I exploded, feeling guilty that I had not made my usual call that day to make sure she was home, as I was buried in work. I called the school, they said as far as they knew, she was picked up on time. I phoned the bus company, was put on hold, then got disconnected. Phoned again, got put on hold. At this point I was on the brink of bawling, cursing the universe, desperate Continued on page 27

LIFE WITH OUR ARTISTIC CHILD

Continued from Page 26 to know where in the hell was my pooh. Finally, I was abruptly told that the bus had to stop because one of the students on board attacked the matron and tried to climb out the window. I asked where exactly was the bus. The bus company just said, “We are doing the best we can to mitigate the situation.” Mitigate? Where is she? I don’t want to hear about mitigation. I want my daughter home! Thankfully, she got home a whopping three hours later. However, as she was and still is nonverbal, I have no idea what happened that day, and now each time she boards a school bus, I wonder the same thing. After that day, I now had the proper arsenal get her to transferred to a school in Rockaway, and by God’s grace, I was blessed with the opportunity to work locally, where I can be a 15-minute drive away from my daughter’s school. Since this September, we drive her

to school, as why on earth are they picking her up at 6:50 a.m., when her school is just 15 minutes away, and starts at 8 a.m. I refuse to put my daughter through that aggravation. A school bus tracking app could help alleviate many parents’ worries, whether their child is special needs or not. I was gratified to learn that District 32 City Councilman Eric Ulrich is on board with this legislation. The proposal, Intro. 1099-2018, is now a live bill that the NYC Council’s Committee on Education is expected to take up this fall. According to Skyer & Associates, the two most important things you can do right now are: 1. Contact your City Council member. If they aren’t already a co-sponsor, ask them to add their name to the bill and commit to vote in favor of it. And if they already are a co-sponsor, thank them! 2. Spread the word. Talk to other special needs families and let the school your child attends know about this bill.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need

Albatross spend the first six years of their life flying over the ocean without ever touching ground.

During his prime, "Iron" Mike Tyson had a ridiculous workout regimen. Starting with a 5-mile jog at 4 a.m., he did 2000 sit ups, 500 push ups, 500 dips, 500 shrugs and 30 minutes of neck bridges daily, six days a week. A Chinese art collector used his American Express credit card to pay $170 million for a painting and said he'll use the points so his family can travel free for life. In the ancient city of Alexandria, all ships had to surrender their books. Owners received a copy and the originals were kept in the Library of Alexandria. For years, Johnny Depp dished out hundreds of thousands of dollars to a tech company who fed him his lines through an earpiece so he did not have to memorize them. Genius level laziness. The PayPal Mafia, made up of the original group of PayPal founders and employees, have since gone

on to become some of the most successful individuals in the world, founding companies like Tesla, YouTube, Space X, Linkedin, and many more. The liver is the only internal human organ capable of natural tissue regeneration. As little as 25% of it can actually regenerate into a whole liver. In 1986, nuclear submarine K-219 sank in 18,000 feet of water because of a missile silo leak. When it was found two years later, the missile doors were forced open and the nuclear missiles it carried were gone. In Ancient Greece, it was considered rude not to offer guests a bath or to clean their clothes upon arrival. There is a road less traveled in France called Passage du Gois that can only be used for a few hours each day before it disappears under 13 ft of high tide. Facts from Sean McVeigh, factologist.

Carmel (Mary Carmel) O’Sullivan, age 75, of Rockaway Park NY, was called to the nearer presence of Our Lord on September 20, 2018, in Woodmere NY. Carmel was a beloved and devoted mother and grandmother. As the owner and proprietor of the Kerry Hills Pub in Rockaway for over 25 years, she was also a well-known and respected figure in her community. Carmel was born on February 9, 1943, in Caragh Lake, County Kerry, Ireland. She was the third of nine children, and the eldest daughter, of Kathleen (Dwyer) and James Foley. She emigrated to the United States in 1963, and married Joseph Clifford in 1964. Living in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City and then Yonkers NY, Carmel and Joe raised four children before Joe’s passing in 1987. After remarrying in 1990, Carmel moved to Rockaway Park NY, which she called home for the rest of her life. Carmel loved America (becoming a citizen in 1973), she loved Rockaway, and she loved the Kerry Hills Pub, where she never tired of working to create an atmosphere of “failte (Irish for “welcome) for her friends and patrons. Her cooking and hospitality for events like the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade were legendary. It was common for customers to say that she was “like a mother to me. But her greatest joy was being called “Nana, and her greatest devotion was to her grandchildren, Grace, Bennett, and Caitlin Clifford, who will always treasure the generous amounts of time that she spent caring for them, from their infancy into their teens and young adulthood. Carmel is survived by her children Patrick Clifford and his wife Jane of Pittstown NJ, James Clifford of Rockaway Park NY, Kevin Clifford of Yonkers NY, and Bernadette Clifford of Long Beach NY; her grandchildren Grace, Bennett, and Caitlin Clifford; and her brothers and sisters Johnny Foley, Jimmy Foley, Nuala (Foley) Corkery, Agnes (Foley) O’Riordan, and Gerard Foley. She joins in eternal light her first husband, Joseph; and her brothers and sister Patrick (“Patsy) Foley, Kathleen (Foley) Breen, and Joseph Foley. Calling hours will be held from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26 and Thursday, September 27, at Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home, 91-05 Beach Channel Dr., Rockaway Beach NY 11693. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018, at St. Camillus Church, 99-15 Rockaway Beach Blvd., Rockaway Park NY 11694. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Yonkers NY.

THE LITERARY CHICK

Wide Sargasso Sea By Marilyn Macron, Esq., a.k.a., Maria Cowhey

The following is a review of novel, The Wide Sargasso Sea, by Dominica-born British author Jean Rhys. Reader, he drove me mad. Truth can lie between two different realities. In Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, Mr. Rochester's plans to marry Jane are frustrated by the revelation that the long-suffering man is already married and in fact, his mad wife is locked in the attic. But what is her story? And if she is 'mad,' how did she get that way? The wife is Bertha Antoinette Mason Rochester, nee Cosway; she prefers Antoinette. Rhys is masterful at showing the descent of Antionette's life and mind, as well as the gradual rise of Rochester's contempt and control of her. The evolution of Antoinette’s voice from clarity to 'madness' is exquisite and sad. Like Rhys herself, Antoinette is of Creole descent. We meet her growing up in Dominica with her widowed mother and disabled broth-

er. From the beginning, Antoinette is unsure of who she is. As white Creoles, they are rejected by both the English and the Blacks, who call them “white cockroaches.” As women, they lack status or agency. After the Emancipation Act frees the slaves, Antoinette’s slaveholding family, once wealthy, becomes destitute. Antoinette’s mother pursues the only option she believes is open to her, and marries a rich white carpetbagger, Mr. Mason. Mason decides to replace the family’s remaining servants with Eastern coolie workers. The staff overhears, however, and they set fire to the home, Coulibri, resulting in the death of Antoinette’s brother and leading to her mother’s emotional devastation. Mr. Mason abandons his mad wife to abusive caretakers and sends Antoinette to convent school. It is his responsibility to identify a husband for her, however, and he does. It’s an unnamed English gentleman, though readers of Jane Eyre will recognize him as Mr. Rochester. As a second son, Rochester needs

the money bequeathed to Antoinette by her stepfather. They wed, and at first the match seems successful. Rochester breaks down Antoinette’s reserve through affection and physical passion. Antoinette responds, opening herself to experience a happiness her childhood had trained her to never expect. Yet Rochester has a nagging distrust of his exotic Creole wife, and antipathy for Dominica. Geography becomes a proxy for the perceptions and misperceptions of the spouses. Neither view the home of the other as “real.” Antoinette sees England as cold and dark; in her eyes, Dominica is lush, beautiful and fragrant. Rochester views Dominica as ominous and threatening, as if he were about to be devoured by a giant Venus flytrap. And then there is the Sargasso Sea, a dead-wind oceanic mire that Dominica borders upon. For Antoinette, it’s a metaphor for her deepest fears. For Rochester, it is a physical barrier between himself and his beloved England. Rochester receives a letter re-

ceived from a man who may or may not be Antoinette’s brother by her father and one of his slaves. The letter warns Rochester he was tricked into marrying a degenerate girl with a family history of madness. These allegations prey on Rochester’s insecurities and cause him to abruptly reject Antoinette. Her fragile sense of identity shaken and desperate to win back her husband’s affection, Antoinette resorts to means which unintentionally goad Rochester into acting on his worst impulses. The rift between them devolves into a chasm leading to her own undoing. Rochester drags his broken wife to cold and dark England, where he confines her to the attic, under the care of servants paid for their discretion. The Wide Sargasso Sea is a stunning work of understanding and empathy - for all characters in the book.

CHILD CARE TRAINING INFO SESSION

It’s that time of the year again! The Business Outreach Center (BOC) is hosting a free child care info session to announce its free child care training course. This childcare training is being offered to the Far Rockaway community thanks to funding made available by Councilman Donovan Richards. The Child Care Means Business is a 13-week, 60-hour intense training that teaches business management, nutrition, and early childhood development to individuals who want to start or expand a childcare home-based business. SFDS 2ND GRADE BOYS SOCCER RECAP By Terence Moriarty

The St. Francis de Sales secondgrade boys had another double dose of soccer games last weekend. The team was looking to get back on the winning side of things after losing their last game, but unfortunately came up short by losing one game and playing to a draw in their second match. The first game of the weekend was on Saturday, September 22 against a tough St. Patrick’s squad at their home field on the Ft. Hamilton Army Base. The Army would have been proud of the fact that the defense was paramount in this game, as the teams seemed to play most of the game in the midfield area with few scoring chances for either team. First-half goalie, William Kelly, was strong in the net, allowing only one goal from the opposition while stopping numerous shots on goal and creating breakouts for the SFDS team with his long throw outs to his teammates. Players such as Rafael Campos-Gatjens, Henry Borgstede and Tommy Aiken played a dominant first half and

controlled the middle of the field with their stout play. The second half got off to a hot start as St. Francis quickly got on the board with a good-looking drive and goal by Brendan Hayden, who scored his first goal of the season. St. Patrick’s ultimately took a 2-1 lead and was able to keep the boys from SFDS off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game despite the great play by Paul and Michael Pedone, Owen Shaffer and Dylan Frontera. As usual for this team, there was no giving up and the game ended with lots of action in front of the St. Pat’s net. You had the feeling that had there been a minute or two more on the clock, this game would have turned out differently. The loss dropped the teams record to 2-2 for the season. Classroom and neighborhood

bragging rights were on the line in Sunday’s matchup against the boys from Blessed Trinity and the game certainly didn’t disappoint. The rainy weather seemed to only add to the drama as the pregame handshakes and chatting between these familiar foes ceased once the game started. The St. Francis team fell behind 1-0 early in the first half on a nice goal from Blessed Trinity’s Liam Grace. Falling behind early in games seems to be the MO for the SFDS team, as well as quickly scoring to even things up and this game was no different. James Moriarty scored his third goal of the season and tied the game at 1-1 by booting a free kick over the heads of the Blessed Trinity players and their goalie, Matt Spylopulos, who played an extraordinary first half in goal. Johnny O’Brien put Blessed Trinity ahead 2-1 on a free kick of his own that managed to sneak through the St. Francis line of defenders to put them up by a score of 2-1. The action was nonstop in the second half as the boys from

SFDS narrowly missed several chances to tie the game up. Luke Hernandez, John Petrie and Patrick McCrory-Twomey all played amazingly well and their play kept St. Francis in the game as Trinity mounted several attacks on net, only to come up empty handed. The player most responsible for keeping this game close was St. Francis’ goalie, JW Youngberg. JW made several remarkable saves in net and was celebrated after the game by being picked up in the air by several of his teammates as all the boys (and their fans) cheered him on. He certainly deserved it! Wonderful defensive play by Cormac Powers, Greg Brenna and Matthew Miller also helped keep Blessed Trinity from scoring. Fortunately for St. Francis, they were able to tie the score up late in the game and the match ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to the stellar goalie play of Blessed Trinity’s Nick Fede. Bragging rights for this season will have to be put on hold until these teams meet up again next month.
