Preserving Rockaway’s Past by Modern Means By Katie McFadden Rockaway native James Supple is preserving old Rockaway memories with new technology. His website, www.oldrockawayphotos.com, is like an online museum, with a collection of hundreds of photos, documenting Rockaway’s history, all the way back to the late 1800s. Supple has been collecting Rockaway photos and memorabilia for at least 15 years. “When I was living in Rockaway, I was always intrigued with the history. Some of the places I grew up with are no longer there, like Playland, Curleys and Dingy’s, so I started searching for photos of them,” Supple

said. He began collecting photos and postcards to decorate his apartment, but his hobby grew. “Once the Internet and eBay came around, I was really able to start collecting them and building my own portfolio. I have photos from Beach 9th all the way to Breezy Point. I like the nostalgia of Rockaway and collecting old things,” Supple said. When Hurricane Sandy came along, Supple’s collection took a hit. “After Sandy, I lost some of the photos I had stored in Rockaway. Like everyone, I never thought the water would come to the first floor and I had some photos in the basement. After I lost those, I thought, how can I preserve

these photos, so this doesn’t happen again?” He turned to modern technology. “As soon as I get some photos in the mail, I go to my computer and scan them and I’ll upload some of the good ones to the website,” Supple said. “The site isn’t for commercial use. It

treasures. “There’s about five to ten of us who collect. I sometimes meet with these people. Like I’m going out to Melville soon to bring this guy a whole collection of stuff, who also brings me items,” Supple said. Sometimes Supple pays for items, sometimes he trades with other col-

was just for friends to share photos, but it became this big project with about 800 or 900 images.” About six months ago, Supple started the website as a way to share his photos with other Rockaway history buffs, who he has befriended over the years. Through his collecting, Supple has found that a few others share in his hobby. He often finds himself getting into bid wars on eBay with other Rockaway memorabilia enthusiasts, but it has become a friendly community in which the collectors share their

lectors and sometimes, people from the community reach out to him to share their personal photo collections, like a woman in Broad Channel who recently gave him 96 photos. “I’ll run into people who tell me they have photos, or that they know someone that might have photos,” he said. Supple says he has spent thousands of dollars on the more than 1,000 images he’s collected and other Rockaway memorabilia. However, to Supple, his collection is priceless. “I’ll never sell Continued on page 16

Meeks Approves Iran Nuclear Deal Congressman Gregory Meeks, Rockaway’s Democratic delegate in the House of Representatives, released a statement announcing his support of the nuclear arms deal signed with Iran in Vienna in July. “This is not a perfect deal,” Rep. Meeks said. “There has never been a perfect deal or one that gives the parties to it everything they want. Despite the risks, the agreement has the support of the United Nations Security Council and most countries world-wide. Critically, key partners in the Middle East region and most of our allies consider the [deal] an important next step after years of coordinated sanctions and diplomatic efforts to push Iran to the negotiating table.” The U.S. along with its allies reached a tentative agree-

ment with Iran last month, imposing strict limits and safeguards on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions which have crippled the Iranian economy. The deal has proved controversial in America due to Iran’s past actions and especially its relations with Israel, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East. It has been subject to party-line politics, with Democrats by and large supporting the deal and Republicans opposing it. “History will record this as one of the most pivotal votes of our time,” Rep. Meeks said. “I believe rejecting this deal would be a consequential and confounding mistake, and a return to the status quo or worse. That is a risk I am unwilling to take.”

October Waves: Photography by Sandra Gottlieb at The New York Hall of Science, Queens From The New York Hall Of Science: The New York Hall of Science announced October Waves, an exhibition of thirty large-scale seascapes by Sandra Gottlieb, will run from September 1, 2015 – October 31, 2015 in the museum’s LeCroy and Ramp Galleries. The museum is located at 47-01 111th Street, Queens. (The Museum hours are: Mon – Fri, 9:30 am – 5 pm; Sat & Sun, 10 am – 6 pm). October Waves is a photographic exploration by Gottlieb, a remarkably inventive and prolific artist, and is her sixth series of seascapes photographed in Rockaway in the last 15 years. This most recent series is a documentation of the 2013 hurricane season when the sea and swells were caught up in a rough and tumble drama. “Sandra Gottlieb’s camera confronts the cascading waves with results as profound as they are beautiful and compelling. Creating meditations in time, her lens

dissects a temporal curve, catching the waves with each frame as they play like actors upon a stage. Her interests envelop both the conceptual and the romantic in a wondrous duality . . . Her mastery of the medium allows her vision to reverberate between the two, making her photographs rich material for consideration while simultaneously offering the oceanic images up to the viewer’s simple and sensual enjoyment,” Phil Tarley said. Critic Dominique Nahas observes, “Gottlieb immerses herself and her viewers into what might be called the dramaturgy of the Wave, its Sturm und Drang. October Waves gives us not only the local color, so to speak, of Rockaway Beach, it also offers the viewer what appears to be thirty different character studies or individual portraits of waves.” Gottlieb’s solo exhibitions include the Alden B. Dow Museum of Art and Science, Midland, MI; Krasl Art Center, St. Joseph’s, MI;

Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Mount Vernon, IL; The Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Ormond Beach, FL; Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta, GA; Robert Ferst Center for the Arts, Atlanta, GA; Danville Museum of Fine Art & History, Danville, VA; Ashtabula Arts Center, Ashtabula, OH; an upcoming exhibition at the

Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, Tampa, FL in January 2016; and the Chicago Academy of Sciences’ Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (to be announced). Sandra can be reached at sandragottliebinfo@me.com. Her website is: www.sandragottlieb.com ADVERTISEMENT

A couple of sad reports came in last week after we had gone to press. Tom Andresen, brother of famed coach Marty Andresen, was captain of the El Jefe, a 40-foot steel hull fishing boat that sunk off Sandy Hook. His body was recovered by divers on Saturday. And then came news of Gary Russo, the Second Avenue Sinatra, was found dead after an apparent suicide at165th Avenue and 92nd Street, just over the Addabbo Bridge in Howard Beach. Russo had been missing for nearly a month. ***** The Queens Public Administrator holds real estate auctions usually of properties held in estate. On September 16, one Rockaway property will be auctioned off: 533 Beach 69th St., Arverne, NY. It’s a 2-story detached frame on 40 x 100. Minimum Opening Bid: $160,000. Go to the Queens Public administrator site and sign up to get such auction notices. ***** You know what’s fun? Being part of the Rockaway Bike Parade. People dress as their favorite Rockaway theme or

character and pedal for fun. So join the fun and sign up at rockawayparade.eventbrite.com. ***** Well, now we know where he’s been (because we sure haven’t seen him). “After close examination, thorough consultation, and in-depth study, I have decided to support the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) (aka The Iran deal) because it is in the security interest of the United States, Israel, and the global community.” So said Congressman Gregory Meeks. ***** And you know what’s going to be a great tradition? The Poseidon Parade on Saturday, September 19. For the past several years a Rockaway crew has been taking top prizes at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Now the group is spearheading a nautical boardwalk parade. It’s open to anyone who likes the idea of marching while dressed as a pirate, a sea serpent, a starfish or something nautical. ***** Former City Councilman Al Stabile died last weekend. Stabile represent-

ed parts of Rockaway from 1994-2001 after beating longtime incumbent, Walter Ward. He was 68. ***** Rockaway’s Got Talent. And now we can see lots of it all in one place when the first annual Rockaway Talent Show takes place at the Beach 97th Street Concessions on Friday, September 11. ***** Labor Day is late this year so that means we’re closer to the unofficial start of Spring – the Rockaway St Patrick’s Day Parade. It’s just 180 days away. ***** The Bayhouse in Breezy Point-- stop at the booth and get a pass -- is open through September 27th. It’s just an awesome spot on the bay. The good news is construction on a brand new, permanent place will begin in October. ***** The music show at Tribute Park last Thursday won’t be forgotten by those who attended. The setting and sounds were delightful. The fireboat offshore provided majestic sprays into the air. Majestic until the wind started blowing the spray onto the crowd and the music equipment. Enough salt water fell on the equipment that the featured singer Ddendyl and her band had to stop performing. ***** Thank you to Benetta Curcio and others who keep us posted on our news racks and whether we need refills or if our paper’s late being delivered. It

The second annual Rockaway Scrawl is set to take place Saturday, September 26. With that event and Irish fairs, bike parades, Poseidon parades, Oyster Fests, Honey Fests, Talent Shows, the Richie Allen Surf Classic and all those things we’re forgetting, we’re gonna be saying September is like the summer: it flew by. ***** There are groups upstate promoting the idea of upstate secession. How can we help them? ***** Reminder. Lifeguards will stay on past Labor Day, through September 13 (though with many back at school coverage will be spotty). ***** On Sunday night, according to police reports, a 16-year-old was shot at 25-18 Seagirt Boulevard. The 101 Precinct Twitter account (@NYPD101Pct) tweeted: We need your help. A 16 y/o boy was shot and seriously injured. Any info contact #101Pct. Between the 101 and the 100 Precincts, there have been 32 shooting victims in Rockaway this year, compared with 29 at this time last year.

A Labor of Love: Fun Facts High School To Art School Program To Hold Interviews about Labor Day This Monday, September 7th, is Labor Day! Often hailed as the unofficial end of summer and a stark reminder to kids that school is just around the corner, it is one of eleven federal holidays as designated by the U.S. government and it is always held on the first Monday of September. But while many view Labor Day as just another three day weekend, it is interesting to look at the history behind the day. According to the Department of Labor, individual cities began passing ordinances to recognize workers in their jurisdictions in 1885 and 1886. New York was the first state to propose an official day celebrating labor, but Oregon was the first to pass legislation on February 21, 1887 (New York would do so later in the year.) By 1894, 23 states adopted the holiday, and on June 28 Congress passed a law designating Labor Day on the date we now have it on. Two men are generally credited with influencing the creation of Labor Day, with each staking an argument as to why they are the true “Father of Labor Day.” Peter J. McGuire, a cofounder of the

American Federation of Labor, is said to have first suggested a day to honor people ““who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” Another man, the unrelated Matthew Maguire, a machinist, is credited with “[proposing] the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York,” which was swiftly followed by that union adopting a Labor Day celebration on September 5, 1882, according to the Dept. of Labor. Some more tidbits about Labor Day: ■ Canada also celebrates their Labour Day on the first Monday in September, but the rest of world by and large honors their workers on May Day (May 1) ■ It used to be a rule of fashion that it was a faux-pas to wear white after Labor Day, but this is generally seen as antiquated now ■ “I believe that summer is our time, a time for the people, and that no politician should be allowed to speak to us during the summer. They can start talking again after Labor Day.” Lewis Black, comedian

Calling all budding artists! For years, the Queens Council of the Arts has run the High School to Art School (HS2AS) program, which prepares high school juniors and seniors who would like to attend art school following graduation through an intensive arts instruction and college preparation workshop. In addition to learning more about art and implanting techniques to enhance their portfolios, students will also receive instruction on how to prepare college essays, apply for college, and gain financial aid planning skills. Over 800 students who have participated in the program have been accepted in to art schools across the country, including the Cooper Union, Rhode Island School

of Design, and Parsons School of Design. Best of all, HS2AS is free for students who are accepted! Applications for the program must be submitted online through the Queen’s Council for the Arts website. Interviews will take place on Saturday, September 19, at the council’s headquarters in Astoria. Applicants are required to bring five drawings to the interview to be reviewed by our teachers. Participants are then chosen based on merit and need; as a scholarship-based program, the council hopes to reach students who would otherwise not receive services. For more information, visit the council’s website.

Sands Point Physical Therapy About Music and Noise

Dear Editor: I’d like to respond to the letter written last week by my friend and neighbor about Caracas, the concession stand at Beach 106th St. In the interest of fairness, there have been times that the concession stand is within the rules and regulations in regard to the playing music of music and as it relates to start time, end time and volume. However, there is also a significant amount of time when they are not in compliance. These rules have been outlined by the NYPD and the NYC DEP. The real issue here is that the owners and managers of Caracas know exactly what the rules and regulations are but have not always complied with them. Many nights they are in violation of one, two or all three of the above. When that happens, they should be held accountable. Perhaps the stress they are experiencing comes from not following the rules and trying to avoid the consequences. I can’t comment on what happened on Friday or Saturday, Aug 21 and 22, but I do know that the NYPD will only enforce legitimate complaints. They also conduct their own random checks for compliance. If they were told to shut down early, there was probably a legitimate infraction. Here’s some additional facts: Once a baseline decibel level has been established in your home, (mine is 50-50dB), the allowable level, as set by the DEP, is an additional 7 decibels above that number. That means that the volume should never be above 62dB. Now we all know that music has an ebb and flow to it so that should be the target to allow for an occasional spike in volume. While an quick momentary spike to 70dB might be OK, the target should be between 57 and 62dB. A consistent target of 70 db quickly results in spikes up well above 70 dB. For the record, 90dB is not the NYC regulation and is clearly excessive. According to many websites (don’t take my word for it) 90 dB is 4 times as loud as 70 Db, and regular sustained exposure may cause permanent hearing damage. I also know that many of people that are involuntarily subjected to the music are against it – once it hits a certain volume. Regardless – as a ranking member of the NYPD said last year – this is not a case of “ the majority rules.” It’s about enforcing the regulations. One of the owners of Caracas was present when this

was said, so there should be no misunderstanding here. Once the rules and regulation were clearly defined, it should really be just a matter of consistently adhering to them, with or without the involvement of the NYPD. In closing, they should be willing to play by the rules and be a good neighbor. When you think about it, it seems pretty simple. I hope everyone has a happy and safe Labor Day weekend. MUSIC IS A LIFEBLOOD!

Dear Editor: (Re: Letter by Tim Farrell and the music/noise at Caracas) Great article by Tim Farrell, I could not agree more with his outlook. We at 102-00 Shore Front are having the same issues with some tenants calling 311 on nights that the Community House has bands or dee-jays. I face the Community House, and with window closed, airconditioner on, I don’t hear a thing. As a longtime resident, I am thankful for the people that were willing to invest money in the Rockaways. Many jobs have been created for locals, and the adults have places to meet and greet. Rockaway residents do that well. I guess some people along Shore Front Parkway want the Rockaway of the past three or four years. VERY DREARY!! These people will have to adjust to the fact that Rockaway is now being viewed by all for the jewel that it is! What will these tenants complain about in the winter? The weather, the noisy air traffic. The people that really care about Rockaway are the people that have invested in it. Bill Dickesheid

Lifeguard Lapse

Dear Editor: On Saturday, August 29th, the annual 139-140th Street block party was taking place on the beach, as it has in past years. I had noticed that there were no lifeguards manning the chair where over 400 people were enjoying a hot summer day, many of them children. On either side of the empty chair, where the beaches were sparsely occupied, both chairs were fully manned. There was also a Park’s Department employee whistling people out of the water because of no protection. When the Chief Lifeguard walked by and was asked why there were no lifeguards on this very crowded beach his reply was that there was nothing he could do about it, and

we should move the party over two blocks to a protected beach! This is either gross incompetency or negligence at best. How can a supervisory employee of the Parks Department not understand the gravity of having such a large crowd of people unprotected or be unwilling to make the call to relocate other lifeguards from adjacent sparsely crowded bays?. While I can understand that some of the lifeguards returned to school last week, there seemed to be no shortage of coverage at the other chairs on that day. Ironically, the next day, the chair was fully manned and I can’t help but wonder if there was vindictiveness at play here. The myopic attitude displayed by lifeguard supervision last week fortunately did not result in any catastrophes, but such blatant ineptitude will ultimately be problematic, and I hope that someone in a position of responsibility has enough common sense to understand the seriousness of protecting lives, especially small children. Beaches Are Ours

Dear Editor: I’ve been reading some newspaper articles concerning the wrongheaded idea that’s floating around about creating surfers-only beaches in the community in which I reside. Since the individual(s) who came up with this plan does not live on my block or area did not see fit to ask or survey how people who actually live here would personally be impacted or feel about this ridiculous idea before trying to pushing it, I’m sharing the opinion of myself, homeowners of my block and others who live in the immediate area, those of us who are most qualified to provide feedback concerning this deplorable suggestion of an idea because we live here. The paramount reason that others and I bought into this community is for our love of the ocean and the idea of having a beach right in our backyards. Residents that lived in this community for over forty and fifty years overwhelmingly appreciate having the ability to utilize/ enjoy the ocean with their families, neighbors, significant others, friends, companions, partners and associates. Individuals and families of modest means that do not have the resources and ability other people in Rockaway may have to enjoy themselves at the very least, are able to go swimming or take their children swimming for some fun and engage in healthy recreation at no

The Rockaway Times

cost right where they live. Since the inception of the Water’s Edge homes being built and way before the ABTS development came into existence, a lifeguard has been/ is posted at the proposed area near the Water’s Edge development. We do not ever intend under any circumstances to not be able to swim where we own, reside and pay taxes! We homeowners did not buy into this community to not have utilization of the water for swimming and playing. If it becomes necessary, we would not hesitate to take legal action to stop any changes to our environment that would hinder us from being able to swim and enjoy the water where we live thus taking away our valuable resource and reason for being where we live. We warmly welcome new development, businesses and new people into the community as long as it does not create a venue for making changes that would have a detrimental impact on people who put down roots here decades and generations ago when there wasn’t even a decent place to purchase groceries, as far as we are concerned, there is absolutely no room for comprising in that! Additionally, we re-built from Hurricane Sandy and did not abandon our beautiful Rockaway community just to have the best part of it snatched away from us in the name of expansion, progress, redevelopment or making more money. It is not our job, idea or intent to suggest what should be done about the newly arrived surfers in the neighborhood lately, though we have our ideas, in this situation we choose to respond with what is most often heard in more affluent neighborhoods, not in my backyard! Deborah Short

The Rail Awaits

Dear Editor: The Rockaway Beach Rail Line, we have the tracks and we have the riders all waiting to get on board. The money must be made available for such a vital mode of transportation for Queens. Thousands of riders would take advantage of this beautiful way of traveling which is fast and safe .How many times must we say YES to the reactivation of the Rockaway Beach Rail Line? For those of you who continuously question against bringing this line back to life you better rethink your decision because there are other transportation ideas/options in the works that most likely will hurt us. Making Memorial Circle Brighter with Sunflowers By Katie McFadden There’s a bit more sunshine in Memorial Circle this summer. As local residents await the trees in the park located between Beach 120th and Beach 121st to be replaced, Rockaway Park resident Mary Noone, and her 4-year-old son, Michael, have added some sunflowers to fill the void. Back in April, Friends of Memorial Circle, a group of residents that help maintain the tribute park to Rockaway’s veterans, were surprised to find the Parks Department chopping down a majority of the trees there, shortly before Memorial Day. It wasn’t for nothing, though. Local residents had noticed that the trees looked bare since Sandy, and were in need of replacement. However they won’t be replaced until the fall. “After Sandy, the trees didn’t look so good here and they needed to be replaced, Noone said. “However, we were a little curious as to why they were cut down when Parks wasn’t ready to replant them right away. I think this park should be a priority. Each space where the trees were has a veteran’s name on it. It doesn’t make sense that they wanted to wait so long to replant them after cutting them down. So Noone wanted to bring some life back to the park this summer with

a temporary fix. “I just saw that the trees were cut down and at first they said they would be replaced in the spring, and then they were saying it wouldn’t be until the fall, so I thought well, sunflowers grow fast and its something that could be here temporarily until the trees are planted, Noone said. As a hobby, Noone often gardens around her home, and her son has

taken an interest. “I garden regularly and Michael helps me. He made me plant watermelon seeds this summer. He wanted to grow mac and cheese, but there are no seeds for that, Noone joked. However, Michael helped his mom with a very meaningful project. Shortly before the Memorial Day parade, Noone enlisted her little boy to help with the mission of planting sunflowers in the plots where the trees had been at Memorial Circle. They planted about 16 plants around the circular park. Noone often brings her son to the park to play and has been teaching him the significance of veterans. “I tell him that each one of the plaques where the trees were, are for a soldier and he understands that they didn’t come home, Noone said. “They fought the bad guys, but they died, so we planted flowers for them, the preschooler said. Noone says that it’s important to teach her son about what the park means “because I’m afraid that people will forget what it’s for, she said. She makes sure to bring her son to the park for each parade honoring the veterans. “I like to wave the flag at the parade, Michael said, explaining that the flag “scares the bad guys. Bad guys are afraid of the American flag. With just a bit of upkeep, a majority of Mary and Michael’s sunflowers have flourished over the summer.

“They don’t need a lot of maintenance. We came a few times to water them with a watering can, but there’s a sprinkler system here, so we’ve just been checking on them and making sure they’re propped up, she said. Noone also gives credit to some of the members of Friends of Memorial Circle, like Jeannette Bernstein, who has decorated the park with red, white and blue flowers, and Maureen Walsh, who deals with the technical aspects of the park, like when the City will finally replace the trees. Walsh says the Parks Department will start to replace the trees starting this fall. “Fall is the best time to have trees planted, so we’re just waiting for them, and hopefully we’ll have all of them planted by 2017, which is when we’ll be celebrating the 70th anniversary of Memorial Circle. Memorial Circle was started by the Belle Harbor Garden Club in 1947. Friends of Memorial Circle, a group of about 10 residents, has maintained the park for the past 25 years, along with some help from the city. “We depend on donations to help us take care of the park, Walsh said. Anyone interested in contributing, can send a donation to Friends of Memorial Circle c/o Maureen Walsh, 177 Beach 116th Street, Rockaway Park, NY 11694.

Summer Ending Musings As the summer of 2015 comes to an end it is once again time to temporarily change the street signs along Cross Bay Boulevard to read “Bourbon Street” (or for all you Channel Cajuns out there, “Rue des Bourbon”) as, for just one weekend, Broad Channel transforms itself into the French Quarter to “Laissez les on Temps Rouler” (Let the good times roll) - celebrating our town’s Mardi Gras Labor Day 2015 weekend in support of the Broad Channel Athletic Club culminating in this coming Monday’s Mardi Gras Labor Day Parade along Cross Bay Boulevard starting at 1:00 p.m. The last breath of any summer season is a sad time although some, like John Steinbeck, have attempted to make the transition from summer’s warm embrace to the frigid kiss of a pending winter less arduous. In Travels with Charlie: In Search of America, Steinbeck wrote, “What good is the warmth of summer without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” Personally, I think that Steinbeck was full of himself. I guess he never heard of “snowbirds” also known as “Florida Groupies!” Warm good! Cold bad! Bottom line….winter sucks! Speaking of winter, the market price of a barrel of crude has once again dropped well below $50 and that decrease is readily reflected in the per gallon price of home heating fuel. Now might be a good time to “top off” your home oil tank as the price of fuel oil will surely rise again as the fall/winter season draws closer. I checked with a free Internet service (CODFuel.com) that provides a list of several oil delivery services that deliver to our area here in Broad Channel and found prices cur-

rently ranging from between $1.750 and $1.80 per a 100 gallon drop. (Note: last year at this time the price was slightly more, approximately $3.00 per gallon.) I recently came across a story suggesting that Nessie, Scotland’s beloved Loch Ness Monster, may be dead. According to the story there have been no “confirmed sightings” of the Scottish Beast in the past two years. Veteran Nessie Spotter Gary Campbell stated “It’s very upsetting news and we don’t know where she’s gone.” That got me to thinking...what about our very own Jamaica Bay Jamie? We know Jamie was first spotted swimming about the bay back in 2003 and then went missing until 2006 when she appeared again. Many thought Jamie lost to Hurricane Sandy but in March of 2013 Jamie popped her head above the waves on Jamaica Bay once again. Don’t be too quick to dismiss Jamie as a figment of someone’s overly fertile imagination. I would remind you that back in July of 2010, a large white pelican was sited and photographed in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Preserve presiding over a group (gaggle?) of Canadian geese near the “A” trains tracks. Additionally, just a few weeks ago, a Central American Kinkajou was rescued while sleeping in a tree in Broad Channel adjacent to the wildlife preserve along Cross Bay Boulevard. So is it that farfetched to expect that another confirmed sighting of Jamaica Bay Jamie will soon be reported in our local media? I think not. Bike Adventures

Bike Ride Adventures: Rockaway’s Bungalows By Katie McFadden Nothing says beachside living like a bungalow. For many, Rockaway’s bungalows were a symbol of summer. They were the perfect summer escape for many who spent their winters in urban city environments. The bungalows represent simplicity. The tiny houses contain the bare minimum for a home: a single floor, a tiny kitchen, bedrooms that couldn’t fit

Page 13

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015

more than a twin bed, a bathroom, some that only had room for outdoor showers. Yet despite their size, some of Rockaway’s bungalows are full of love, as shown by the personal touches from those who lived or continue to live there. Rockaway’s bungalows are Rockaway’s history. There was a time when 7,000 bungalows dotted the peninsula. Today, only about 400 remain. Two years ago, I was lucky to attend a 100-

Sept 11th Memorial Ceremonies at Tribute Park

year celebration of the bungalow colonies at Beach 108th and 109th Street. Despite their age, despite their size, Rockaway’s bungalows are strong. It is surprising, but at the same time, not surprising, that Rockaway’s bungalows survived Sandy; some without even a drop of water. Some credit vegetated dunes for protecting the bungalow colonies of the Beach 20s. Some say the bungalows of the Beach 100’s survived, being on one of the highest points of the peninsula. The hockey rink between Beach 108th and 109th may have even helped. Simple, historic, strong. To me, the bungalows will always remind me of my grandmother, who I lost to cancer two months ago. Her bungalow on Beach 108th Street was the only piece of property that my grandma ever owned. Spending every summer at my grandma’s bungalow, her tiny paradise by the sea, it was as much a part of my life, as my own home. As time goes on, I miss my grandma more and more. Life has seemed pretty chaotic since she passed. I was craving simplicity. I was craving a connection with my grandma. So in her honor, my recent bike adventure was a tour of Rockaway’s bungalows. On Monday morning, I headed out

for the roughly five mile ride to the bungalows between Beach 24th and Beach 26th Streets, and made stops to other bungalow sites along the way, as I headed back toward the west end. Being in the middle of a heatwave, I left in the morning and stuck to a beachside path most of the way for a cooler ride. As I rode toward a piece of Rockaway’s history, it seemed appropriate that I was able to ride along some of Rockaway’s pre-Sandy boardwalk. I had never been to the bungalow colony in the Beach 20s between Seagirt Boulevard and the beach, but

I’d heard and written enough about them. They are protected under the Beachside Bungalow Preservation Association, lead by Richard George. Martin Scorsese found them to be the perfect setting for filming BoardContinued on page 18

She’ll be joined by Chris Lightcap on bass and Alison Miller on drums. At 7:30 p.m. will be G.R.A.S.S. or the Gowanus Reggae and Ska Society, featuring Michael Blake on tenor sax and numerous other Brooklyn jazz luminaries. GRASS was founded eight years ago by a group of musical friends dedicated to finding the intersection of Reggae and Jazz. GRASS plumbs the deep tradition of Jamaican ska, rocksteady and reggae for gems that have deep groove and freedom to play. The result is a funky good time and inspired improvisation. The band features Blake on tenor sax, Mark Miller on trombone, Rick Sabo on guitar, Nate Shaw on keys, J. A. Granelli on bass and Tony Mason on drums. Last but not least is John Mettam and Flying Home at 9 p.m. Flying Home is a recent WNYC Battle of the Bands finalist. They feature the music of Benny Goodman and perform classic swing hits of the 30s, 40s, and 50s, carrying on the hot style made famous by the Benny Goodman Ensembles. This band features Mettam on drums, Ben Goldberg on clarinet, Sean Moran on guitar and Michael Bates on bass.

The Lazer Speaks Paddle the Summer Away

By Lou Pastina It’s not too late to get in every last drop of summer, and I would start with the A-team Paddleboard Company on Beach Channel Drive. Andrew and Amy Dima have started a terrific business, bringing paddleboarding to the Rockaway’s with first class instructors who are knowledgeable, courteous, and super fun. With the baby getting ready to go off overseas for a semester, I grabbed her sister, mother and baby and we all went down to see our good buddy Deirdre to hook us up with lessons and an afternoon to remember. Signing up was easy – we simply hit up

Page 15

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015 was Louie! Can’t beat that! Turns out that everyone was able to stand up and paddle, even my chief mermaid, who has improved her “core” greatly through yoga, thank you Helen & Sarah! And we found out they run yoga on the paddleboard too, very cool. Like life, when the wind is at your back the sailing is pretty easy and we made our way down through the cove easily. It’s really pretty from the water and at times, if not for the Marine Parkway Bridge, you wonder where you actually are! But again, like life, there comes a time when you must turn around and head back, and when that Rockaway sirocco is against you it is a harder paddle, so be prepared for that. If you are like me, your body tends to act as a real “drag,” as I have often been told

by my mermaid, and the wind does a number on you. But eventually you make your way back, and you get a great workout too. But before we could make it back, Louie, the dog, not the writer, decided to jump in and test the waters. Confused, he made his way onto baby’s board, which made her day. And out of camaraderie, Louie, the writer, not the dog, followed him into the drink, much to the amusement of the cadre of mermaids, making their day too! All in all, it was a great experience, and one that I felt very safe participating in with my family. I highly recommend it. It will be a great memory for our little group. Next up? Jet skis and surfing? I am hoping Louie, the dog, can join us! Get the most out of the rest of the summer, it ain’t over folks.

their website, registered and then showed up. We then jumped in their vans and off we sped to a spot just east of the Breezy Point Yacht Club, where there is a public launch site managed by the National Parks Service. A few quick pointers on how to hold the paddle, the best way to get the most out of your motion, and how to balance on the board, and we were in the bay heading toward Roxbury before you knew it. Joining our group was another couple with the cutest little French pug. The pug wore a life jacket and stood on the front of the board as if he were in the movie Titanic. And get this; the dog’s name

Preserving Rockaway’s Past by Modern Means any of my memorabilia because it’s too valuable to me,” he said. Not wanting to deal with the long commute to Manhattan from

sign hanging in my office and sometimes coworkers will tell me that they took the A train to Rockaway over the weekend,” Supple said. “These items are conversation pieces.”

Rockaway, Supple moved out when he was 26, but visits frequently and Rockaway is always around him in some way. Much of his memorabilia decorates his homes. “At my house in Southampton, I have a ton of stuff from the Blue Bungalow and the Gift is Love and sometimes when tenants rent the place, they ask me why I have so much Rockaway stuff there. It’s where I grew up. I have an A train

Supple’s website only contains images, but they could spark several conversations. There are two main features to the site. The first feature, which appears right when you go to the site, is a map. Users can click on one of the red markers at a location on the map, to see an old photo from the area, or they can search a specific street, address, or zip code, to see if

Continued from page 3

there are any photos from a particular area of interest. The second feature, and perhaps the most interesting, is the image fader. Visitors can click on the thumbnail of an old photo, and when they click on the old photo, it fades into a recent photo, showing what the area looks like today. He has photos of carriages along Rockaway Beach Boulevard, which are now replaced by cars. He has photos of the Marine Parkway Bridge as it was still being built, and how it looks finished today. He has images of Playland, which has since been replaced by housing. He has countless photos of Rockaway’s old hotels, which have since been replaced with businesses and apartment buildings, and much more. When Supple receives an old photo, he’ll look on the back of it, make an educated guess, or he’ll enlist the help of old timers, to determine where the old photo was taken, and then he’ll go back to the current location to photograph what the place looks like in current time. “Every time I go to Rockaway, I make it a point to take a few new photos. Every weekend I go to the same location of an old photo and I’ll try to take a new photo from the same vantage point and I update the website with the before and after,” he said. The image fader shows how Rockaway has transformed over time, which is something Supple witnessed firsthand. “I’ve seen the change from

cannot fit

The Rockaway Times when I was growing up here. I saw Rockaway in its heyday. I grew up on Beach 117th Street, so I like to find photos around there and Beach 116th Street. Rogers was still a hotel when I was growing up. I used to have lunch in the dining room. Now it’s a Chinese restaurant. I used to go to movie theaters and the Park Theater. I must have gone there a hundred times, and now it’s closed. I grew up with Playland. I would spend almost every weekend there. Everybody loved Playland. Now it’s just housing there. I used to go to Boggiano’s and get French fries. Now it’s Playland Motel, which is a cool place, but there’s no nostalgia there. With the photos on the website, it can at least bring back some memories, especially for the older generations.” It also serves as a way to ensure that the history will be available to younger generations. “Maybe in 100 years, all of this will be gone. Who know what’s going to happen. If nobody buys these photos and documents them, nobody will know what was here. It’s good for our children and their children to see what Rockaway looked like.” If you would like to see Supple’s gallery, or if you have any photos of your own that you would like to contribute to his collection, check out www.oldrockawayphotos.com.

of cement; some brick; some wood. Almost every one has a front porch; a classic bungalow necessity. The bungalows there are very much lived in, which is evident by the people sitting on the porches, the impressive flower gardens in front of many, and the personal touches like seashells that decorated one porch and signs like a star-shaped one that said, “Welcome to the Beach. I also found many cats around the area. In my years of bungalow experience, I’ve found that cats and bungalows seem to go together. It was also evident that some of the bungalows there haven’t been touched in a while. A few were boarded up; some have become a canvas for graffiti artists. Yet I didn’t see one for sale sign, which wasn’t surprising. Owning a Rockaway bungalow is like owning a piece of priceless treasure. With so few bungalows left on the peninsula, it’s not something you’d want to give up, and its something that many covet. I was sad to see a large plot of land that is being marketed as a development site on Beach 24th Street. I imagine many bungalows once stood there and were razed at some point. My hope is that someone purchases the plot and makes the decision of expanding on the bungalow colony there, with modern bungalows, instead of high-rise projects. One series of bungalows that really stood out to me, were five on Beach 26th Street. If you take a trip down there, you’ll know exactly which ones I’m talking about. Bright green, orange, blue, red and yellow bungalows, occupy an area close to the beach. I’m assuming the paint job is a modern touch. Maybe even the buildings themselves are new. They surely weren’t there in the 1920s; they’re much too striking. Just seeing them

brings a sense of happiness. They were a nice surprise as I finished exploring the bungalows around that area, before making my way to Beach 43rd street, where my editor said I would find more tiny homes. Beach 43rd wasn’t the most pleasant road to navigate due to bumps and potholes, and there wasn’t much to explore. A few bungalows dot the block, but much of the street is barren. I’d recommend skipping it. Instead, head to Beach 87th Street. The Rockaway Beach street may have gotten more hip in recent years, with the addition of the Rockaway Beach Surf Club and Tacoway Beach on the corner, but hidden away, in the middle of the block, between Beach Channel Drive and the RBSC, is a small bungalow colony to the right. There can’t be more than 14 homes along the short dirt road, but I finally found myself back in the court community feel that I’m familiar with, when it comes to bungalows. My editor also tipped me off about another bungalow colony between Beach 100th and Beach 101st, between Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Freeway. I had no idea about this colony and was shocked to find a large number of bungalows within the one block. I imagine those who live there, must know their neighbors quite well, as the homes could not be closer together along the courts there. I also noticed that very few of these bungalows had front porches. After all, there isn’t much room for any. Rounding up my bungalow tour, I stopped by the bungalow colony I know best at Beach 108th and 109th Streets. Between these blocks, you won’t find one court that doesn’t have an American flag. In a few of the courts, a flag hangs outside every home. Also, almost every bungalow has a front porch, whether it’s open or enclosed and several are decorated with lights, lanterns and beach signs, and beach chairs and bikes. These bungalows are some of the liveliest on the peninsula. Even on a Monday morning, I found several groups of neighbors gathered together in the courts, enjoying good coffee and conversation. Although I’ve been there many times, I made sure to stop at my late grandma’s bungalow, just to say hi. Despite her no longer living there, I could feel her presence. Her American flag still waves outside, and the red flowers I watched her plant back in April, are still in bloom. By the end of my bungalow tour, I felt very peaceful. Viewing these simple, tiny, beautiful homes all around Rockaway, made the chaos of life, seem not so important.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015 resilient. Their houses are a sign of love and determination to get back to their normal lives and bring back the block. Most people would walk away but not this group. They are some of the finest people you will meet in Rockaway. It is people like them that make Rockaway the best place to live. This past weekend the block had “An Around the World Block Party. Six families hosted a country and they went above and beyond to decorate their homes in the themes and dress up as well. It was the best night in Rockaway this summer. So many laughs, great food, and amazing people. The six countries were Ireland, Germany, USA, Mexico, Italy and China. You spent one hour at each house eating appetizers and drinks of that particular country. I didn’t think I could last six hours but it

The Power of the Human Spirit Rockaway is a very unique community with an amazing history behind it. We have always been special being a beach community. It’s easy to be happy and content when the beach is right down the block offering everyone a place of peace and serenity. The vastness and beauty of our surroundings is stronger than the riptides and currents we sometimes experience. We even managed to survive Sandy and rise above it all. Today I am writing about a very special block in Rockaway, there are many just like this one but this group has a very strong bond that makes them even more unique. I will not mention the block and perhaps

you can guess it. Hurricane Sandy tore down their houses with a horrific fire. Many homes were burnt to the ground leaving everyone homeless. During the hurricane they helped one another escape to safety. They will be best friends forever and never forget what happened. There are many stories about that night and it is heartbreaking what each family went through. However, they survived and decided to rebuild. The new homes are so beautiful and majestic. It was a painstaking process to say the least but these Rockaway neighbors would not give up. They became stronger and more

was easy with these guys. So much fun. It is a wonderful testament to the human spirit to see this block having happy times again. They did not let Sandy get them down, instead they built a stronger foundation not only in their homes but with one another. In their darkest moments they found compassion and support for one another. Not an easy task. When you have good neighbors, you don’t want to lose them, they become your family. This block is an inspiration to all of us. We were a great community before Sandy but we are even a better one today. I am proud and honored to be surrounded by so many authentic people. Thank you my fellow neighbors. You show resilience, strength, compassion and love. May you always be happy, healthy and enlightened.

Happy Birthday! With a little pinch of Kevin Boyle’s comments on celebrating 1st year birthdays, read: do not celebrate, I’d still like it known that the Rockaway Beach Surfer’s Association just had it’s 1st birthday last month. A lot has been accomplished in that time and it honestly feels like it should be the 3rd birthday by this stage. Even so, there is a hell of a lot more to come in the next few months with at least 5 surf contests coming up before the end of the year. The RBSA is also organizing some end of year celebrations with the membership, that will be announced via the RBSA web site, rbsurfersassociation.org and email. I strongly suggest to sign up to be a part of this and other events in the near future. We’ve had some issues with the website that are now getting resolved, so stayed tuned via the website. Rumors? Some information has been leaked to me via some local business owners that people out-

side of the peninsula believe that local home owners are completely against surfing beach expansion. This is completely contrary to what many of us living on the peninsula believe. Names won’t be mentioned, but it’s amazing how one local journalist’s misrepresentation of these matters, in an international paper, can feed this rumor mill. One thing that I think is great is the amount of discussion about surfing beaches and swimming beaches and overall access to our ocean resource. We stand better united to get the solutions we need as whole peninsula. As for rumors, I always liked this quote: “Rumors are a kind of exhalation or intellectual perfume thrown off by the news of the day. Some events are more aromatic than others; they can be detected by the trained pointer long before they happen. When things are going on that have a strong vibration—what foreign correspondents love to call a “repercussion—they cause a good deal of mind-quaking. An event getting ready to happen is one of the most interesting things to watch. By a sort of mental radiation it fills men’s minds with surmises and conjectures. Curiously enough, due perhaps to the innate perversity of man, most of the rumors suggest the exact opposite of what is going to happen. (CRISTOPHER MORLEY, Mince Pie)

Plan for the Unexpected By Artie Wallace While looking online I came across a list of the top 10 mistakes of the DIYer. In past articles we already covered what they had listed for 1 through 9, I think what they had for No. 10 is an important part of any project. Plan for the unexpected… As a contractor, when I price out a job, I always need to plan for the unexpected. Whether it be opening a wall and finding the studs rotted, changing an outlet and finding the wiring not up to code or anything else that may come up. These unexpected things can add a lot more to what would otherwise be a quick and easy job. As a DIYer the unexpected things you may come across could make a simple job turn into something you need to hire someone for. First rule of thumb is to allow an additional 25 percent in cost to cover unexpected material. It is always better to have money left over in your budget than to not have enough. Second rule of thumb is to allow more time than you think is needed. If you get done a little early, you can always sit back and read the Rockaway Times, but you don’t

want to be stopping and leaving a job half done because you didn’t have enough time. A safe time allowance is to add 20 minutes for every hour you think the job will take. Also plan on possibly needing a tool that you don’t have. Something as simple as painting can lead you into buying spackling knives or a miter box to replace a piece of molding. When unexpected things come up on a project be sure to keep in mind your limitations. You may have been ok with patching a wall, but replacing bad studs in the wall may be out of your skill level. Some projects will go over budget or time allotted, which is not unheard of. You will make it up on the jobs/projects you didn’t need that extra 20 minutes or 25 percent for materials. Stores like Home Depot and Lowes have no problem taking returns, so don’t be afraid to over buy. Plan right + buy right = saving time and money in the long run. Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com

BIRTHDAY SPECIAL!

Goldfeder vs. Stop Violence All-Stars Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder will try to unleash his inner Barry Bonds this coming weekend. The assemblyman has organized an all-star softball game featuring the Team G All-Stars (Goldfeder’s team) versus the Stop the Violence All-Stars on Sunday, September 6, at Bayswater Park in Far Rockaway. Stop the Violence was founded as a softball league in 2012, with the message of “If we can play together, we can stay together!” The game will be

umpired by police officers from Rockaway’s 101st Precinct, with Community Council president Jazmine Outlaw throwing out the first pitch. It will begin at 3 p.m. “This softball tournament is a great way for us to come together and celebrate everything that unites us,” the assemblyman said. “At the end of the day, we all want what’s best for our families and for our community. Whether in life or on the ball field, we’re all just swinging for the fences.”

New Far Rockaway Library Getting $$ The newly renovated Peninsula Library just opened and now plans are starting to finally move forward for the Far Rockaway library. On Wednesday, September 2, local electeds gathered to announce that the project for a new library has been funded. The $29.75 million project will be the third library built on the same site at Central Avenue and Mott Avenue. The library will be re-located to temporary quarters on Cornaga Avenue and Beach 20th Street during construction, which is expected to start in Fall 2016 and be completed by late 2019. “The Far Rockaway community

depends on their public library for so many things: technology access, job readiness services, small business resources, educational materials and programs for all ages. They have long outgrown the current facility. Now, thanks to the generous support of Borough President Melinda Katz, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Council Member Donovan Richards, and Assembly Member Phillip Goldfeder, a new, state-of-the-art library is on its way,” said Bridget Quinn-Carey, Interim President and CEO, Queens Library.”

E-Z DOES IT: Local Brothers Starting Pest Control Business

PER PERSON

By Dylan Watton

Matthew and Henry Moers arrived to Dunkin’ Donuts in a Toyota Camry that had a huge chunk of its bumper missing. “You can blame Albany for that,” Henry said, referencing his old college town notorious for its hard-partying and sometimes reckless student body. The brothers were wearing nearly identical outfits—black company shirt, khaki shorts, and sneakers. That’s probably fitting—turns out they’re part of a group of triplets. “We’ve lived in Rockaway our whole lives,” Matthew said, adding that they grew up on Beach 149th Street. Always hungry for activity, when the brothers were 14 years old they received their working papers and immediately went to work in an atypical but important business—pest control. “Our uncle Mike [Krohn] owns Creepy Critters, an exterminating business in Broad Channel,” Henry said. “He’d bring us on jobs when we were younger than that even but we didn’t start working until then.” Throughout high school and college, the brothers consistently worked in the business, sometimes with their uncle and sometimes freelancing for larger companies. Matthew and Henry exhibited foresight not often seen in people their age. The 22-year-olds recently graduated college (Matthew from Brooklyn College, Henry from SUNY Albany) and had long since prepared to open their own pest control business. “This was the plan from the start for us,” Matthew explained. “We’ve been working in pest control for over five years and many of the people we’ve worked for and with have told ‘You guys know what you’re doing, you need to open up your own business.’” Thus, EZ-Pest Exterminating was born. The business is licensed and insured, and the

brothers stated that on Wednesday September 2, they will be taking their tests to get licensed for commercial food businesses and structural termite work. “We know those books back to front,” Henry assured. Pest control is certainly not a viable option for everyone—it is often backbreaking physical work, featuring long travel hours and understandably questionable environments. The brothers unanimously agreed that hoarders produce the worst houses—“We had to enter one apartment completely sideways,” Matthew said. But the Moers said that they not only enjoy what they do but crave the human connection they get with their customers. “We look at the job as helping people, not killing bugs,” Henry said. “We’ve been in houses where little kids are living with roaches and have been their whole lives. When we come in and finally get rid of them, they love us, and it’s a great feeling.” Matthew agreed, adding “The business is really about interacting with people. Fifty percent is knowing the business and 50 percent is dealing with the customers.” Their vision for EZ-Pest is indeed based on customer satisfaction. “We haven’t had a customer whom we lost touch with,” Matthew said. “We have people call us at 1:00 a.m. or 2:00 a.m. and we try our best to make it to them as soon as possible.” As Rockaway natives, the Moers want to serve their community in a friendly, fair manner—their slogan is “Dependable work, affordable pricing.” “The big companies like Terminex charged so much money and they simply aren’t friendly,” Henry said. “They usually just send some guy who makes $15 an hour and doesn’t care about the customer. We don’t want that for our customers.”

Beach Bounty Jackie Cashen opened up her garden on Beach 126th to let friends have a go at turning the small plot into the Beach Bounty Garden. Somehow they’ve been able to produce kale, swiss chard, collard greens, corn, assorted peppers, squash and eggplants, carrots, potatoes, broccoli, beets, cauliflower, ground cherries, lettuces, beans, cucumbers, assorted tomatoes, fennel, leeks, herbs, parsley, rosemary, cilantro, basil, lavender, lemon verbena, mint, oregano, and more. Jackie says, “It’s been amazingly successful and delicious. No sprays, chemicals or fertilizer, all organic, with good soil and compost. No pests or animals bother the plants. So good!”

Bungalow Completes Trivia Season The 2015 Bungalow Bar trivia championship was held on Monday August, 31. More than 20 teams played along, with some vying for a consolation prize for non-qualifying teams (tickets to this Thursday’s Jet game) while the teams who had been entered in the championship played for three levels of prizes—a $50 gift card for third place, a $100 gift

card for second place, and $250 cash for the winners. At the end of the the game, trivia regulars the Scoregasms came out on top! The team consisted of the Rockaway Times’ own Dylan Watton, Allison Lindon, Lisa Fernandez, Liz Donohoe, Catherine Rudden, Jane Prakope, Cecelia Rudden, Donald Rudden, and Noreen Barnes. Ideas for

The MTA on the Record with the Rockaway Times By Rick Horan

This is the second installment where we get answers to specific questions from City and State officials. This week we will hear from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Kevin Ortiz of the MTA’s press office responded on behalf of Darryl Irick, MTA Bus Company President and Carmen Bianco, President of MTA NYC Transit. We went back and forth via e-mail on some of the issues until I was reminded that that Kevin is limited to saying what the MTA is doing or not doing, not necessarily why. 1. What is your on-time performance for 2013, 2014 and so far this year? MTA: While On-Time Performance is an important management measure for subways, our primary service delivery focus is on evenness of service, not on schedule adherence at the arriving terminal location. This is our focus because, generally speaking, our customers—relatively few of whom travel all the way to a terminal station—are more significantly affected by the time they wait for a train at a station along the route rather than the difference between the actual and scheduled arrival time at terminal stations. For this reason, Wait Assessment, not On-Time Performance, is our primary customer service indicator. Despite the many challenges we have faced over the past year, like growing ridership and high levels of work in the system, we have largely maintained our system’s wait assessment. Every day, our dispatchers deploy rail strategies to promote evenness of service and these efforts in many cases cause trains to arrive late at the terminal. For example, our dispatchers who are managing through an incident will adjust headways at the starting end of a route to provide more even service on a route. That may mean a train leaves its departing terminal two minutes behind schedule. This is the better move for overall customer service, but reflects poorly in our OTP numbers. Stats on wait assessment and OTP are posted monthly in our committee books on line. http://web.mta. info/mta/news/books/ 2. Why doesn’t the shuttle pull right behind the southbound A trains? MTA: We recognize that there are sometimes long waits for the shuttle. Our Operations Planning Division will be working to develop and implement guidelines for Dispatchers on when the shuttle should be held or released. There are times when the shuttle cannot be held because the train and crew need to be available for subsequent trips

3. Why does it take 1:45 minutes to get from Rockaway to Kew Gardens MTA: Bus trips on the Q52 or Q53 from the Rockaways to Woodside or Rego Park can vary between 55 minutes and 85 minutes. Q52/Q53 buses are stopped almost half of the time either at red lights or at bus stops. When the bus is in motion, it is often stuck in traffic because there is no right-of-way for the bus. More than 30,000 daily riders depend on the 10 bus routes that serve the Woodhaven/Cross Bay corridor and connect riders to important transfers including the AJZMR7 trains. A third of Rockaway riders ride the Q52/53 route end-to-end. Providing faster and more reliable bus service is one of the goals of the Select Bus Service project, along with creating safer streets for all users and maintaining appropriate traffic flow for local and through drivers.

4. Why Select Bus Service when it slows down more commuters than it speeds up? MTA: Select Bus Service features like off-board fare payment, bus only lanes, and transit signal priority will make riding the Q52/Q53 25-35% faster. Across the five boroughs, Select Bus Service has reduced travel times for more than 225,000 bus riders every day. SBS on Woodhaven and Cross Bay will also reduce bottlenecks and create a more predictable trip for drivers. In Brooklyn, bus lanes on the B44 SBS have reduced travel time for buses and cars. 5. How should the MTA capital budget gap be closed? MTA: Total Budget is approximately $26.8B, not including Bridges & Tunnels which is self-funded. State has pledged, MTA has asked NYC for $3.2 billion. Funds have already been identified to cover the rest – a combination of federal, state and City resources as well as the MTA’s bonding capacity. Additional information available at: http://web.mta. info/capital/ 6. Will they support a transportation study for QueensRail? MTA: We have not taken a position on this. RH: What is the process for the MTA to conduct a study for this potentially important transportation option for Queens? MTA: Again, we have not taken a position on this. RH What circumstances would have to exist for the MTA to conduct a study for QueensRail? MTA: We have not taken a position on this. 7. What is your agency currently doing to improve transportation to the Rockaways? MTA: We have invested significant Continued on next page

September is Planning Month! By Antoinette DeMetropolis

September is not only a great month for harvesting, but also a perfect opportunity to reflect on this year’s garden. Last year at this time I decided that I wanted to build raised beds. With a twoyear-old daughter comes lots of play dates and I found myself turning into the old lady who yells at the kids for running through her yard. Since I was going to take a big leap and commit to a more permanent garden, I wanted to make sure I planned properly. I had some recycled window frames that I wanted to use as cold frames and knew that I would have to incorporate them into my initial design. I also wanted my beds high enough to discourage running through them. The height also helps to ease back pain for those of you who cry after a day in the garden. After making a list of requirements, I browsed the Internet for some inspiration and came up with a diagram by October. It was such a pleasure in the spring to come across my plans and I started getting excited about

building. I had one problem though; I was now a few months pregnant and got yelled at every time I lifted something. When my husband inquired about what I wanted for Mother’s Day, I knew right away what I would ask for – some good old fashioned manual labor. (I guarantee he will never make that mistake again!) I shared with him my plans and began my search for supplies. I scored some recycled scaffolding from Build it Green and Matt from Edgemere Farm gave me recommendations on reputable companies to get soil from. After about three weeks, the beds were done and ready for planting. This year turned out to be a tougher growing season than past years because I was now working with new soil, but I’m still so glad I did it. We get so many compliments on our beds and I love working in them. My goals for next year are to concentrate on my soil and get those cold frames in! What are your goals? Email me at rockawaycsa@gmail.com with ideas or questions about building your own raised beds.

Americans Spending More for College Out-of-Pocket The Bank of Mom and Dad is open for business, as parent out-ofpocket spending has become the number one source of college funding. In fact, 62 percent of families did not borrow to pay for college last year, according to a new report. The national study, “How America Pays for College 2015, from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, now in its eighth year, found that parent income and savings covered the largest share of college costs -- 32 percent -- surpassing scholarships and grants at 30 percent, for the first time since 2010. Families covered the balance of college costs using student borrowing, student income and savings, parent borrowing, and contributions from relatives and friends. While families spent 16 percent more on college in academic year 2014-2015, the report found that fewer families are worried that eco-

nomic factors would affect their ability to pay for college, fewer eliminated colleges from consideration due to cost, and fewer took costsaving measures to control college costs. Michael Gross, vice president and head of the higher education practice at Ipsos Public Affairs, says “The increase in the amount families are spending appears to be less about the rising cost of college and more about the choices parents and students are making about how they pay for college. “Traditional economic concerns, such as job loss, declining home values, and decreased value of savings, are less worrying for parents this year, allowing families greater freedom to concentrate on college. Still, while the majority of families agree college is an important and worthwhile investment -- and are making such responsible decisions

to help pay for it as filing for federal aid, reducing personal spending and working while attending school -- only 40 percent of families have a plan to pay for college. Raymond Quinlan, Chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae, says “College remains a priority for parents, and they are feeling more confident as they reach into their own pockets and put their money where their values are, says “It’s gratifying to see families are borrowing responsibly and making efforts to reduce costs. In an effort to move that stubborn statistic and encourage more families to make a college financing plan, the experts at Sallie Mae are expanding their suite of free tools and information. To get started, they recommend these three steps: s 3TART WITH MONEY YOU WON T HAVE to repay. Supplement your college savings and income by maximizing scholarships, grants, and work-

study. s %XPLORE FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS !P ply by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. s #ONSIDER A RESPONSIBLE PRIVATE education loan. Fill the gap between your available resources and the cost of college. To view the complete report, visit SallieMae.com/HowAmericaPaysForCollege. For free tools, such as a college planning calculator, scholarship search and the College Ahead mobile app, visit SallieMae.com/ PlanforCollege. For many families, college is one of the biggest investments they will ever make. Fortunately, as the cost of college trends upward, so too is the incidence of responsible decisionmaking when it comes to financing an education. (StatePoint)

and will come in handy in college. They are also especially important during college exam preparation. Ensure your student has a quiet area to study for the big day, free of distractions like televisions, squabbling siblings and social media. A study schedule should be practical. Mathematical coursework, testtaking and preparation require the right gear. Set up your student for achievement with scientific and graphing calculators that feature a range of high-level functions. Remember, some questions in the math sections of the SAT can’t be solved without a scientific or graphing calculator. Choose one that is right for the task. For example, Casio’s CLASSWIZ fx-991EX is the first scientific calculator to feature spreadsheet functionality. It enables users to create spreadsheets with up to five columns and 45 rows. It can also convert graphs into QR codes which can be displayed on a projector screen, allowing students to work seamlessly with their teacher or test prep tutor. Designed for elementary, middle and high school students, Casio’s range of calculators focus on such subjects as general math, trigonometry, statistics, algebra, geometry and physics, and are

available in a wide variety of colors (a potential motivational tool for students who want to do math in style!). Whatever model you opt for, be sure it is authorized for use during the test and has an intuitive interface that will speed up calculations when time matters.

Deeper Understanding

It’s not always enough to memorize materials. A competitive edge is gained with true comprehension. Fill your home with books and magazines on a wide range of subjects. Picking up new words in a practical context will happen naturally without feeling like work. On the math front, check out practical tools that encourage deeper understanding of difficult concepts, such as research-based books and education workbooks on topics like critical thinking, algebra, geometry and statistics.

Test Day

The night before the test is not the time to cram. Students should arrive at the test site refreshed, well-rested and well-fed. Fatigue or an empty stomach will prove distracting. Fill up on brain food containing Omega-3s, antioxidants and vitamin E. For those needing a morning boost, consider jogging the brain into action over breakfast with a challenging article or math problem. (StatePoint) College entrance exams can significantly impact an academic career. Take every step you can to ensure a maximum score.

Fireboat Extinguishes Tribute Park Concert By Katie McFadden

Last week’s concert at Tribute Park was a bit of a washout, but it wasn’t because of the weather. On a beautiful but breezy Thursday evening, dozens gathered for the Katz Concert Series event featuring Ddendyl, from Season 6 of NBC’s The Voice, but an accident lead to an early end. Residents brought chairs or gathered around the park’s benches shortly before sunset to hear the sultry style of the singer. Friends of Tribute Park member Delores Orr and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz spoke a bit about the park, the money that has been allocated to it and some of the upgrades that will come in the future. Then Ddendyl and her threepiece band started playing under the gazebo of the park. Ddendyl

sang some of her original music off of her new EP Lonely Heart, and captivated the crowd with a bit of Johnny Cash, before singing God Bless America, as a fireboat arrived and was supposed to put on a display. The fireboat began to shoot up water after the song finished, which was a beautiful sight at sunset with the skyline in the background, but with the combination of the southeast wind, the tribute turned into an unintentional disaster. The saltwater blew right into the park, causing people to pack up their chairs, cars along Beach Channel Drive to turn on their windshield wipers, and the band to pack up their soaked equipment, putting an early end to the event. Some stuck around to watch the stunning sunset, despite feeling a bit salty.

NYLAG, Rockaway Pols To Host Sandy Insurance Claim Event If you filed a flood insurance claim after Superstorm Sandy, but believe you were underpaid, you are entitled to reexamination of your claim. On Friday, September 11, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), an agency that provides free legal services to people who cannot afford an attorney, will be hosting an event where they will offer free one-on-one legal consultations to people on a walk-in basis as well as providing advice on the reexamination process. The event is being held in partnership with Councilman Donovan Richards and Assemblyman Philip Goldfeder.

NYLAG’s community event will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 at the Beach 54th St. Community Library’s meeting room. It will begin with a short “town hall session, with consultations commencing at 3:15. NYLAG stressed that there are many important factors to consider before applying for reexamination and that it is a separate process from a National Flood insurance Program appeal. Those interested in attending the event are asked to come prepared with all pertinent documentation. The deadline to request a reexamination of a flood insurance claim is September 15.

Construction of the grandstand seating in Phase 1, from Beach 86th to Beach 97th, will continue and construction of the beach access ramps and stairs are scheduled to start after the beach season ends. In Phase 2, the remaining beach access ramps and stairs from Beach 102nd to Beach 98th Streets, will also start after the beach season ends. In Phase 3, from Beach 108th Street to Beach 126th Street, water main relocation will commence including some temporary shut downs by the DEP, followed by pipe and H pile driving. The installation of the chain-linked fencing will continue, parallel with the water main relocation. For Phase 4A, Beach 73rd to Beach 86th Streets, and Phase 4B, Beach 60th to Beach 73rd Streets, Pipe and H pile driving, installation of the sand retaining walls, precast pile caps, sand fill under the boardwalk, electrical and plumbing utilities for the new boardwalk and beach access structures are substantially complete in Phase 4A. Far Rock Block Party On Friday August 7th, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) joined forces with the Rockaway community, Gensler Architecture, and Design for America for Far Rock Block Party, a day of creative design and building on the Rockaway Freeway under the MTA A-Line. The Far Rock Block Party was the culmination of a series of design events in which participants re-imagined the area under the elevated as a safe space for community use. Design for America and Gensler interns led the way in creating public art and design installations using materials such as flowers, AstroTurf, string, and cardboard. At the same time, participants enjoyed local entertainment from the Keith Jordan Band and delicious food from City Sticks, Chicks to Go, and the Paleo Factory. Aside from being a fun day of community building, the Far Rock Block Party successfully raised awareness about the world of possibilities under the elevated. RWA would like to thank Gensler Architecture, Design for America, and the Rockaway community for participating in this event. The Far Rock Block Party is part of a larger community engagement initiative, begun by RWA in 2013, called Project Underway. Project Underway seeks to actively engage

F R OZ E N D R

residents, business owners, transit advocates, and government agencies in working together to develop a plan to better utilize the underpass from Mott Avenue to Beach 116th Street. RWA hopes to turn this underutilized space into something that can benefit the community by providing a safer and more equitable route for people of all ages, while also connecting both the east and west ends of the peninsula. RWA’s next event is the 2015 Rockaway Bike Parade on September 12th from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. The parade will celebrate human powered transportation and the Rockaways. Participants should come dressed as their favorite Rockaway site or theme because at the end of the parade they can compete for prizes in the “Best of Rockaway” Awards competition. The parade will depart from Firehouse 59 and travel the street en route to Beach 97th Street and the Boardwalk. For more information: RWA www.rwalliance.org

Boy shot just three blocks from scene of older brother’s murder Tragedy struck twice for a mother originally hailing from Far Rockaway. On Sunday, August 30, 16-yearold Neshawn Plummer was shot in the head on Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 26th St. by two men on foot, according to police. He was critically wounded and rushed to Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he passed away on Tuesday night. For Neshawn’s mother, Sharon Plummer, it was a cruel instance of dÊjà vu, as in 2012 her older son Shawn was shot and killed just three blocks away on Seagirt and Beach 29th St. Neshawn’s tragic death comes after Sharon moved the family to

Page 43

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015

Brooklyn following Shawn’s murder years earlier in an attempt to escape the violence. Police said that it appears Neshawn snuck back into his old neighborhood and was gunned down. “In spite of my pain today, I have no more tears to cry, Sharon posted on Facebook Tuesday night. Police have released a six-second video clip that included three suspects. Two of the men are seen fleeing on foot, while another climbs into a waiting vehicle. Neither Neshawn’s nor his older brother’s murders have been solved and both investigations remain open.

To report any suspicious activities, individuals can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or Gun Stoppers at 1-866-GUN-STOP.

AHOY ROCKAWAY Water Temperature: 75.9*F The Battery, NY Porgies are now in the area in large numbers (porgies must be at least 10” long and a limit of 30 fish). Breezy Point has been very active in the past few days with the Scup (porgies) and a few other species. Porgies are bottom feeders and they like piles of rocks or submerged structures as their habitat to feed around and live near. Porgies can get into the four to five pound range and can really give the an angler a fight (especially on lighter tackle). Larger porgies are out further into the ocean (hump backs) and can provide the angler with an even stronger fight. These certainly are strong fish for their size.

The fluke are still there, but keepers are getting very scarce. Not much talk about any striped bass on the inside or on the beaches with the warm water temperatures, but keep in mind, we are coming up to the “Fall Run” and hopefully the bass fishing will pick up a bit. Snappers and crabs are around, but the crabs are more numerous near or around the back bays and marinas. The tides and currents were extreme because of the “Super Moon” on Saturday and will remain that way through the rest of the week. We hope that you got to see the Super Moon, but if you didn’t, don’t worry, there will be another super moon on September 28. We checked in with our local stations and here’s what they had to report.

Giuseppe Allo and friends, of Howard Beach, took a trip out to the Cholera banks recently and limited out on striped bass. Giuseppe A.K.A. “Joe” also caught a Juvenile Thresher shark approximately three to four feet long. Joe refused the “GAFF” on the shark and was able to remove the hook using a special “long reach” pair of hook removal pliers (we hope it was very long reach with those choppers). Joe released the shark unharmed, back into the ocean, a TRUE SPORTSMAN! Joe also said that there have been sharks not too far off of Breezy Point. Tom’s Wave service station bait and tackle in Rockaway Park: We called and spoke with Tom and he reports that the porgies are in and in very good numbers. The sea wall is a good spot with an emphasis on structure (rocks, reefs, wrecks). Tom also said that he had heard of some king fish being caught, but Tom reminded us that he did NOT actually see the king fish, so he said that this was NOT a confirmed report for that species. Tom reports that the porgies prefer bloodworms over clams. Big Ron’s Bait and Tackle in Howard Beach: We called and spoke with Dawn from Big Ron’s and she reports the porgies are in, the fluke fishing has been slow and few keepers are seen. An angler at Big Ron’s, who refused to give up on the fluke fishing, did catch a nice 9-1/2 lb. fluke, proving that persistence pays off big. The

big news is that the porgies are in and there are lots of big ones just off of Breezy Point and smaller porgies are in the bay. Well, that’s it anglers, the porgies are in, the hot weather is still here, so get down to the water and get some fresh fish for dinner. Until next week, anglers . ROCKIES REGISTRATION ROLLS ON

Rockaway Paddleball Still Going Strong By Bill Swensen

Rockaway hosted its annual Rockaway Paddleball Tournament. The turnout was fantastic. More than 50 players from all over the five boroughs came to participate in this annual event, along with a ton of fans to cheer the players on. The weather cooperated and all the participants and the fans were able to enjoy a beautiful scenic day in the Rockaways. Everyone who lives here already knows that there is nothing better than a beautiful day in Rockaway, but it was especially nice to be able to share our glorious town with all of our friends from the other boroughs. The games were played on the courts located on 75th Street with plenty of food and drink for all. Comments were made all during the day about the beautiful courts that the games were played on. Thank you to the N.Y.C. Parks Department for

rebuilding these courts, and making them even better than they were before. We hope that the commitment that we all were given by the Parks department to rebuild the courts on 105th Street will be kept. Paddleball is a big part of the rich heritage of Rockaway, and the restoration of these courts is another big step in showing that, although Sandy knocked us all down, we are strong enough to get back up again. Some of the best players in the city showed up to play in this tournament and the talent was reflected in the exciting games that ensued. The games just kept getting more exciting as the tournament progressed. When the field was narrowed down to the final four teams you could feel the tension everywhere. It seemed like everyone was still there at the end to watch these teams face off to see who would make it to the finals, and ultimately win the tournament. The enthusiasm of the crowd was

tremendous, and all the games lived up to the expectations. Thank you to everyone who participated, and congratulations to the winners. We hope everyone enjoyed our Rockaway hospitality, and more than anything, had fun. Please come back again next year, things are only going to get bigger and better. Special thanks need to go to Mike Millner, Maria Serrano, Mike Melendez, Allen (Shorty) Eades, Charlene Gillo, and George Gracia who put this tournament together, and did all the work to make this event such a success.

A Rockaway institution is making its return for the first time since Hurricane Sandy. Following the completion of the new rink on Beach 108th St., Rockaway Rockies hockey is once again open for registration for the 2015 season. Registration will take place on Wednesday, September 2nd, Thursday, September 3rd, and Thursday, September 10, at Seaside Park on Beach 109th St. from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., across from the new Coastal Frozen Yogurt shop. An additional day of registration will take place on Sunday, September 3rd from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the new rink. Currently, prices for registration are $50 for one child, $80 for two children, and $100 for three or more, with room for ages four through high school depending on how many people sign up. Families needing equipment for their players are encouraged to go to Play it Again Sports in Oceanside to receive discounts on merchandise by letting the store know that they are a “Rockies family.” The season is projected to start on the weekend of September 19th and 20th.
