Incidents of Hate Bookend Holiday Weekend By Katie McFadden

Labor Day weekend is supposed to be a time of celebration and relaxation as many mark the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of another school year. However, this Labor Day weekend was marred by incidents that have caused sadness, anger, shock and even fear. At around 3 p.m. on Friday, August 30, members of the Silver Gull Beach Club near Breezy Point were shocked to find part of a place that many call an oasis, covered in painted messages of hate. Words such as “gas chamber,” “heil Hitler,” “N*****” and symbols such as swastikas, adorned the walls of an arts and crafts shack utilized by the club’s children. But that was just the beginning of incidents that bookended the holiday weekend. In the early morning hours of Monday, September 2, as the sun rose and people began their day with a walk or

jog along the beach, they were stopped in their tracks on Beach 138th Street. “F***n Jews,” “White Pride” “14/88,” and Nazi symbols were scattered across the sand. Word quickly spread about both incidents, A New York Times article about the Silver Gull incident was published and shared on Sunday, and on Monday morning, shortly after the messages on the beach were discovered, photos spread across Facebook. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato was the first of many elected officials to speak out against the acts. “I was horrified and disgusted to learn of not only one, but two incidents in our community this weekend where Nazi imagery and anti-Semitic graffiti were discovered,” she said in a Facebook post. “The fact that these images were discovered means that there is a systematic attempt to intimidate this community. We must continue to demonstrate that our love

and commitment to our community is stronger than their attempt to instill fear and intimidation. We must stand up together against this bigotry and intolerance.” Councilmen Eric Ulrich and Donovan Richards, Senator Joseph Addabbo, Rep. Gregory Meeks, Mayor Bill de Blasio and others also condemned the attacks. Upon the discovery of the graffiti at the Silver Gull, police were immediately called. As Silver Gull is on federal land, the United States Park Police responded to this incident. The National Park Service (NPS) released a statement, saying, “This weekend’s incident of racist graffiti and vandalism at the Silver Gull Beach Club, a concession facility within Gateway National Recreation Area, was a hateful assault on the people of New York and the NPS. The U.S. Park Police is leading an investigation and will work with local authorities and the management of Silver Gull to deter-

mine what happened. We will make every effort to identify the culprits and pursue justice against those who so savagely debased a place of rest and relaxation for all New Yorkers along the beautiful shores of the Rockaways.” Additionally, Governor Andrew Cuomo dispatched New York State Police and those from the state’s Hate Crimes Task Force to assist in the investigation to “ensure the cowards responsible are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.” The NYPD responded to the Beach 138th incident. “A report for aggravated harassment was recorded and the Hate Crime Task Force was notified of the incident. There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing,” an NYPD spokesperson said. The NYPD also revealed some shocking statistics. Anti-Semitic hate crimes are on the rise. By this time last year, there were 93 anti-Semitic hate crime complaints. This year— Continued on page 5

152 so far. They also pointed out that hate crimes in general are increasing, from 205 in 2018, to 290 so far this year. The messages are now gone. The beach writings were wiped away from the sand. According to members, the area where the graffiti was found at the Silver Gull has been boarded up. But while the messages can be erased, their impact cannot. “Silver Gull can fix the damage done to the building, but you can’t fix the emotional and psychological impact this has on people,” one Silver Gull member who happens to be Jewish said. “It made me feel very sad. My father, who is gone a long time, was a World War II veteran, and this is the very thing that he fought against. It makes me sad that there’s still so much hatred in the world.” A Rockaway resident who came across the beach messages on Monday said she was left shaking after reading the words. “I

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2019 was out taking my dog for a walk and I came across this, 10 blocks from my house. It was beyond disturbing. As the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor, this took a place for me that was my sanctuary, my serenity, and destroyed it,” the resident said. The question now remains — where do we go from here? With both incidents still under investigation, it is not known who committed each act, why they committed them, and if they were connected. As they await more information, local religious leaders are trying to determine the next best steps. “This is horrible,” West End Temple’s Rabbi Marjorie Slome said. “But we have to let law enforcement do their job and investigate before we can speak out. Let’s find out who did this. Early in this investigation, we should be concerned about whether or not these words can lead to violence. I absolutely value free speech, but I think we can do better, and until we know more about this and who did this, I think we all need to do a better job at being kinder to one an-

other and not use our words to destroy others. There needs to be more dialogue and education and relationship building in the Rockaways so that people who have feelings of hate and distress understand how hurtful they can be. The Jewish community is very sensitive about things that begin with words, and have throughout our history, ended in violence. I will try to work with community leadership on making Rockaway a kinder place and I’m looking forward to working with people to develop ways to combat hate on a community level.” Rabbi Tsvi Selengut of Belle Harbor’s Ohab Zedek synagogue says he’s already seen kindness at work in response to the recent events. “This is something that’s upsetting everyone in the community, but the good thing I’ve seen come from this is that it is upsetting our neighbors as well. I’ve had people walk up to me on the street and give their support and that is what is important. Anti-Semitism isn’t just a Jewish problem. It’s all of our problem and it’s something all

Page 5 of us have to confront and I’m happy to see our politicians and neighbors standing up and saying that this is not acceptable in our neighborhood,” he said, adding that he’s working with other leaders to come up with a formal response to these incidents as the investigation is pending. The important thing, says Rabbi Tsvi Selengut, is that this issue isn’t being ignored. “After we went to see the messages on Beach 138th, they were brushed away from the sand. It brushed away very easily, but for us, it’s not brushed away easily and this sticks with us,” he said. “There are so many times that we overlook these things, but as attacks increase across the city, it’s important that we don’t just brush this away. We all care about this and many have been overwhelmingly supportive, because we all want to have a nice, quiet, respectful neighborhood. We want people to not just let this pass, but to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”

His attire and personal charisma overwhelmed the other guy in the photo, Dave Portnoy, who is the president of Barstool Sports. On Wednesday, September 11 at 8:30 a.m., there will be a reading of the names of Rockaway residents who were killed on that day in 2001. ***** Also, on Wednesday, September 11 at 1:15 p.m., the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy community will gather in the Parish Prayer Garden, located on the corner of Beach 129th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, to remember those lost on September 11, 2001. Poseidon Parade Categories Announced Labor Day weekend is the unofficial end to summer here in Rockaway. At least, it always has been. About three years ago, the Parks Department decided to keep the beaches open for an extra week, and the tradition has continued. Labor Day used to mean a sharp decline in DFDs, the disappearance of the ticket-hungry summer detail and PEP officers, the start to the school year, and the much-anticipated arrival of hurricane surf. September used to be called, “secret summer,” or “Rockaway Summer.” Nowadays the summer insanity rolls right on until the summer is officially put to bed with Poseidon’s Parade. Despite this recent revision to the Rockaway calendar, Labor Day weekend still has the feel of a desperate last gasp of summer air before we burrow into our winter holes. I realized that my coverage of this year’s parade has left out an important element of this salty beach town: “The dudes.”

While there are varying, strong held, controversial feelings about who qualifies as a “local” surfer, I knew I’d find dudes at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. I figured I’d catch a few slugging down Modelos and Konas while telling exaggerated tales of personal triumphs in the sea. Instead, I was treated to a legendary Locals Surf School Bash. It was the premier of “Snack Town,” a locally-filmed and produced skate video. The bash included live music, the skate video projected on a huge screen, and the biggest gathering of dudes since Rockstock and Barrels. As I approached the party, listening to the band echo under the train tracks, I knew I’d find the person I was trying to pin down for an interview. Sure enough, I bumped directly into the “Dude of Dudetown” himself: Mr. Jimmy Dowd. Mr. Dowd is Poseidon’s Parade’s official MC. He will be brandishing the brigade’s official bullhorn and narrating whatever the parade may bring. As Jerry Rea once said, “Dowd the

Loud always brings the crowd and makes us proud.” I presented him with the official parade judging category list that I recently acquired from the Brigade. This year, the parade participants will be judged in the following categories: “Best Children’s Group,” “Best Adult Group,” “Best Block,” “Best Recycled Mermaid” (costume made from recycled material), “Best Bike,” “Best Pet,” “Best Baby Carriage / Wagon,” the highly-contested, “Best Pub / Restaurant,” “Best Individual,” “Best Float,” and “Best Performance.” Jimmy looked at the list, closed his eyes, and ripped into an intense air guitar solo. While he head-banged away, I knew the interview had concluded. More importantly, I knew he was amped up for the parade. Check out St. James gear at Boarder’s Surf Shop. On Sunday, I used some intel from the old country to track down Casey Butler so I could check in about the parade. Kingdom Kerry, was facing off against

a heavily-favored Dublin team in the All Ireland Championship. Despite the time difference, Rogers was packed at 10 a.m. with screaming fans of both teams. Sure enough, I found Casey in the Kerry corner with the O’Sheas and McGoverns yelling at every kick. The game ended in the most European way possible: a tie. They will replay the game on September 14. (Imagine the Super Bowl ending in a tie, only to be replayed two weeks later. Go figure.) After the confusing conclusion, Casey told me that the Brigade is currently concentrating their efforts on trophy creation. Poseidon’s Parade features artistic homemade trophies that adds to the competitive element of the parade. Interestingly enough, the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island has gone back to homemade trophies. Tribute Park to Host 9/11 Ceremony Despite Ongoing Renovations By Katie McFadden

What happened on September 11, 2001, will never be forgotten, and those who oversee Tribute Park are making sure of that, by opening the park that is undergoing renovations, for its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony. Following last year’s September 11 ceremony, the Friends of Tribute Park announced that the Beach 116th Street bayside memorial park would be closed for as long as two years to undergo major renovations due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy and other storms. However, with the 18th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, ceremony organizers and the NYC Parks Department are doing everything they can to ensure the park is open so the annual memorial ceremony can continue to take place there. On Wednesday, September

11, at 8:30 a.m., all are encouraged to head to Tribute Park to remember those who died, especially locals, who perished on September 11, 2001. The ceremony will include the reading of the names of the locals who died that day while residents lay roses on the central compass at the park, which points to the site of the World Trade Center. There will also be music, with vocals by Chazmond Peacock and Steven Wagner, and music by Aerial Acoustics,

which includes Dorothy Wagner and Dennis Smith. Tribute Park is still undergoing renovations, and the park will continue to be closed following the ceremony, but everyone is working together to ensure it is open in some form for the event. “We met with the Rockaway Parks Administrator, Eric Peterson, and the contractor, and they are making accommodations to have the ceremony at the park that day,” Kevin O’Mealy, treasurer for Friends of Tribute Park, said. Some of the elements that have been boxed off during renovations, like the central mosaic and Firemen’s Rock, will be uncovered for the ceremony. The tiles of the park had been removed and stored safe-

ly while renovations are taking place, so plywood or another material will be placed along the dirt paths of the park for people to safely walk on. The Parks Department is also bringing in potted plants to spruce up the park that normally has plenty of greenery and flowers under regular circumstances. The contactors will also remove much of their equipment out of the park for the day. O’Mealy hopes to spread the word that the park will be open for the ceremony, even though it has been closed for almost a year. “We hope to have a good turnout. It doesn’t look like it’s going to be open as of late, and traffic has been a mess due to construction in the area recently, but we will be open that day and we’ll figure things out as we go along,” O’Mealy said. Continued from Page 10 The organizers did consider other locations for this year’s ceremony, but at the end of the day, holding the ceremony at the place that is dedicated to remembering those who died on 9/11, was ideal. “We’re going to do the best we can because it’s all in the spirit of 9/11. It is important for the community to continue to have this ceremony in the park because people have an affinity for it. It gets a lot of use, not just on 9/11, with people going there to reflect, especially those who have lost loved ones under any circumstance. It’s a really nice setting and we want to let people know that it’s still there and it’s going to be restored very nicely. Because of the significance to the community that the park has, we really wanted to make sure we had it there,” O’Mealy said. Renovations on Tribute Park are expected to be complete before next year’s 9/11 ceremony. The renovations began on the park almost immedi-

ately after September 11 last year and requires a two-year process because there is much to be done after years of damage related to Hurricane Sandy. “All of the infrastructure had to be replaced after Sandy. One of the big things was the sea wall had to be rebuilt, and in the spirit of resilience, they put in these massive boulders to build a seawall which had started to erode from the original wall from when the park first opened. They also needed to replace the irrigation system, which had been destroyed. They’re also doing a lot of electric work and putting up a new front gate. It’s very extensive work that has to be done and Parks was waiting on FEMA money to do it, which is why it just started last year,” O’Mealy said. “It’s taking a while, but I think it’s going to come back better than ever. The lighting will be improved, the sprinklers will be working again, and everything will be put back the way it was before. It’s going to be much improved and well worth the wait, we hope.”

I am a victim, and I’m taking action to seek final closure. During the spring and summer of 1972 at the age of nine years old, I was sexually assaulted multiple times by a priest at St. Rose of Lima Church in Rockaway Beach. I spoke out about this sexual abuse over 40 years ago and in 2004 was scheduled to testify against the man who victimized me before he pled guilty to victimizing others in the 1970s. As hard as it is to do, I encourage any and all other victims to find closure, to come forward and seek justice with me. I encourage any and all victims on the peninsula to come forward and seek the closure that I am seeking. The closure that we deserve. Continued from Page 12 Dreaming of LI Dear Editor: Since moving to Rockaway some 20+ years ago and working in Queens, I've noticed the resistance to acknowledge that Queens is on Long Island. Several times on the bus from work, I would be asked why I was on the bus. "Don't you live on Long Island?" My reply was always, " I do live on Long Island. I'm from Rockaway." The Queens residents all looked puzzled. A co-worker gently chided me that I wasn't "from" Rockaway, I live in Rockaway. When I asked where he was from and he replied Brooklyn, I was happy to quip back that he was also "from" Long Island. For the record, in the 55+ crowd (then 35+), I've only known one person from [born in] Rockaway. The subject of Long Island has been stoop banter with friends and neighbors occa-

sionally over the years. However it starts, part of the argument against my declaration is repeatedly taxes. Queens pays New York City taxes they say. I said taxes are relevant to county and state, not geographical location. I tried giving different examples to support this like, if the state of New York sold Suffolk County to Connecticut on Tuesday, on Wednesday it would still be on Long Island. It didn't work. Recently a conversation was still going on over my shoulder as I walked away for the night. I entered my house shaking my head and laughing that I'd been having the Long Island conversation again. And then it struck me. AHA!!!! I grabbed my map of Long Island (a large, detailed paper version for those 55 and under) and returned to the scene of the debate, sure that this physical proof was going to settle it once and for all. It didn't work.

It did spark a conversation that Nassau County in its bankruptcy had sold Queens to NYC. Besides being untrue (Queens county is one of the original counties in NY and then split into Nassau) this would still not change that it's on L.I. So we were back to taxes and interestingly enough, the retort of ask The Rockaway Times came up twice. People quoted from phones what was not in dispute, which was that Rockaway is on the peninsula of Queens in New York City. I simply added that it was on the Island of Long, just to mix it up a little. Not that I believe that this will change minds in any way, I request based on last night’s requests that you settle this. Think of it as an opportunity for the RT to go down in the annals of Journalism (or perhaps a slightly different spelling to those who still refuse to believe) not unlike the famous editorial in 1897: "Yes, Rockaway, you are on Long Island." From The RWA SHORE CORPS 2019

The high school interns in Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s (RWA) Shore Corps program worked hard and played hard all summer! Throughout the six-week summer program, participants were assigned to a wide variety of different jobs in the community. For example, some participants worked with the NYC Campaign Finance Board to register voters, and others worked with the National Audubon Society, raising awareness about the endangered piping plovers. Other participants spent the summer working with local Rockaway restaurants (Breezy’s BBQ,

La Fruteria, Brothers, and Caracas) and surf schools (Skudin and NY Surf ). In addition to working at different sites, Shore Corps interns learned important professional skills, like how to build a strong resume. This summer, the Financial Sharktress, Galit Tsadik, came to teach participants about the financial aspect of college and gave tips to prevent the accumulation of college debt. Shore Corps interns also worked with an im-

prov group, developing public speaking skills for a performance at the end of the summer. Shore Corps interns are also heavily involved in improving the local environment. The interns collected over 500 pounds of trash from our streets and beaches. In an effort to have some fun while building appreciation for the Rockaway environment, they also spent several afternoons each week surfing and kayaking. Special thanks to our

A cryptocurrency is a virtual currency intended to function the way a traditional currency like the U.S. dollar does: as a medium of exchange. But unlike traditional currencies, a cryptocurrency isn’t under the governance of a bank or government. The most popular cyptocurrency is Bitcoin, which records transactions anonymously in a public blockchain database that includes all transactions that occur, and which is maintained by a decentralized network of computers. These computers, called “miners” or “validators,” use cryptography to verify and add new transactions. The cryptography used makes the blockchain database extraordinarily difficult (although not impossible) to tamper with or modify. Cryptocurrencies have their problems, significantly, volatility. In January 2017, the price of

a bitcoin was around $900; in December 2017, it spiked to over $16,000; in February of 2019, it was around $3,400; in August 2019, almost $13,000. In contrast, the value of the dollar rises or falls dependent upon inflation, which has been relatively tame over the past ten years. Furthermore, transacting in cryptocurrency is relatively slow. A major credit card company can complete 24,000 transactions per second; bitcoin miners, only three to seven transactions. Additionally, cryptocurrencies are not regulated (generally with the exception of some states’ registration or licensing requirements), making them potentially useful for money laundering or other criminality. (Bitcoin was the official currency of the Silk Road.) Regulation could tackle these issues, thereby encouraging good conduct by industry players, consumer trust, and price stability. Furthermore, given their volatility, cryptocurrencies present liquidity problems because in-

vestors can’t easily convert them into cash without exposure to drops in value. Recently the media reported that Facebook plans to launch a cryptocurrency called Libra. Libra is different than other cryptocurrencies. To introduce greater price stability than is inherent in Bitcoin, Libra is designed to be a “stablecoin,” a digital currency backed by fiat currencies and securities. Also, unlike Bitcoin, Libra will be reserved, meaning that every Libra will be backed by an asset, similar to the old gold standard idea. Additionally, Libra will use a nonpublic, “permissioned” blockchain managed by a group of “trusted parties,” a consortium called the Libra Association. This means that not everybody will be able to transact in Libra. In contrast, Bitcoin’s public blockchain ledger can be accessed by anyone with special hardware and internet access. The Libra Association will provide management and the initial

funding to back Libra and maintain its blockchain infrastructure. Some experts have opined that, given that true cryptocurrencies “are defined by their lack of reliance on trusted intermediaries… Libra is not a cryptocurrency because of its use of a permissioned ledger and its reliance on a trusted issuer to hold and manage a fund of assets that back the currency.” Bitcoin was designed as a peer-to-peer payment system, enabling the exchange of money without using banks. Today it is generally used as an investment. Unlike the more volatile Bitcoin, Libra was designed to allow Facebook users to send and receive money through its messaging services for ordinary transactions like paying utility bills, tuition, rent. Cryptocurrencies are still nascent. It will be fascinating to watch their development. Consumers interested in becoming investors should proceed with caution.

Aging Well A few months ago, Dr. William Frishman, the Dean of Medicine at my former medical school, NY Medical College, wrote a column about aging that I would like to share with you. More and more people are living to their predicted life spans and achieving advanced old age. This is especially true in the U.S. and Japan. Dr. Frishman listed 10 factors that accounted for people living to their genetically determined life-span. The first factor is genetics. A genetic basis for old age has always been present and, throughout history, people have had a maximal life span of about 120 years. Certain mark-

ers may predict old age such as elevations in HDL (“good” cholesterol) and family histories of longevity. Factor #2 is advances in antibiotics, public health, and vaccines. Efforts to improve water and air quality, vaccines, and antibiotics have gone a long way toward reducing infectious diseases as a cause of death, especially in children. Next is advances in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. This includes better treatment for hypertension, lipid disorders, and smoking, all of which, if untreated, can lead to early heart disease and

death. Factor #4 is advances in surgery including better treatment of appendicitis, long bone fractures, coronary artery disease, and cardiac arrhythmias. Dr. Frishman’s fifth factor is eliminating or moderating high-risk behaviors. This is an individual factor and includes modification or elimination of high-risk factors such as cigarette smoking, drug addiction, excessive alcohol consumption, riding a motorcycle, and reckless or impaired driving. Addressing these factors reduces the incidence of premature death, allowing more people to reach their true life-span. The next factor is family and social support. One doesn’t make it to old age without support from friends and family. As families move apart from each other, more older parents require custodial care in specialized facilities, where outcomes are not always favorable and where older people placed in these facilities may not achieve their true old age. The next factor is eliminating war and poverty. Too many young people

Page 27 have been killed early in life in wars. Sustained peace is a secret to long life. Factor #8 is luck, or if you prefer, divine intervention. Doctors know that a patient’s belief in God will make a difference in their recovery. Over the years I have personally witnessed events in medicine that cannot be explained save for the existence of divine intervention. The next factor is developing healthy habits such as regular exercise, healthy nutrition, flossing your teeth, and maintaining a proper weight. Finally, cultivating optimism in life is important. An optimistic attitude provides a survival advantage over pessimism. Helping depressed patients become more optimistic may prevent hopelessness, which may lead to drug addiction and suicide. Dr. Frishman is quick to point out that he is not promising immortality, as every living thing eventually dies. Goodbye Summer Labor Day Weekend did not disappoint with the beautiful beach weather, clean water, great people and a school of dolphins. The entire summer was extraordinary in so many ways. My intention was to be present and enjoy my family and friends. September is finally here and it can be the most beautiful month in the Rockaways with necessary quiet time. It can always be stressful and cause anxiety for many people going through changes such as jobs, school, relocating, etc. Do your best to welcome them all. Some good, some not so good. Face your fears and leave your anxieties behind. In the end, we must accept the constant changes in life. Embrace life for today. Beach yoga was once again one of the big highlights of my summer. Honestly, every year I say to myself, “maybe I should

take a break and have Saturdays off,” but the truth is I absolutely love teaching to this very special group of people from all walks of life. It’s been nine years teaching basic yoga every Saturday to the most amazing group of human beings. Everyone is so grateful and easy going. I love hearing all the stories and becoming part of their journey. When they come to yoga, they are looking for peace and serenity. I try to be very aware of some of their struggles and do my best to offer a balanced practice encouraging healing. It is an honor and pleasure to have this opportunity from the Parks Department to offer free yoga on the beach. When I first started teaching beach yoga, I did not have a lot of experience but the students were always kind and understanding. Mostly, I would teach to the new students wanting them to understand how yoga could help connect you to your body and mind. At times it would be difficult to teach 100 students and not be able to help

them more with body alignment. But truly grace is the highest alignment and being in nature, they are able to feel the power of their higher self. It is quite an uplifting experience for me as a teacher and a privilege to offer this practice. I always walk away in awe of the amazing students who are always so appreciative. For everyone out there who ventured out to beach yoga, thank you. Thank you for your presence and support. It has been an awesome experience. Teaching back at the studio is always a place of ease. It is home. We have lots of props and I can clearly see everyone in the room. If you have never been to Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio, you must try a class. We have a very special place in the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on the third floor. It’s heaven on earth for all who enter. We are blessed to share this space and we welcome all levels. Our classes are diverse and the advanced student is usually the gentle student who moves slowly with a keen awareness. I

believe it is important to have a balanced body and mind. Our bodies have so many complexities and with every contraction, we need lengthening of our muscles. The more I practice yoga, the more I want to learn about every aspect of the practice. We are all students for life. Breathwork takes priority in most classes. Moving the body in an organic motion using your breath is of utmost importance. Keep moving even if it’s only your fingers or toes. Let your breath initiate any movement. Let the conversation between your body and mind begin with your breath. I can guarantee you positive changes will happen for you and everyone around you. Whatever you are feeling inside is projected outwards. Positive energy is contagious. Share your happiness with someone who needs it. We are forever in service to our community. May you be happy, may you be healthy, may you be free of suffering and may you live with ease. Namaste.

Breezy Remembers 9/11 Breezy Point will hold a series of ways to commemorate the 18th anniversary of September 11, 2001. From a run, to a paddle out, a Mass and ceremonies, Breezy Point will show that they can never forget. The community will begin its remembrance ceremonies on Saturday, September 7, starting with the 4th Annual 9/11 Remembrance Race. This 5K run/walk goes from the Roxbury 9/11 Memorial to the Breezy Point Memorial and culminates in an after-party at the Breezy Point ball field featuring the Hell or High Water band, rides, food, drinks, an award ceremony and more. The race starts at 10 a.m. and the party starts at noon. This event helps to raise money for the upkeep of the Roxbury and Breezy Point 9/11 Memorials. With this comes registration fees of $35 for adults, $15 for those under 21, plus fees if you just want to participate

in the after-party. To register for the race, head to www. bpremembers911.com. On Tuesday, September 11, Breezy Point and Roxbury will have their own memorial ceremonies. There will be a memorial at the Breezy Point 9/11 Steel Cross at 8:30 a.m. Then at 10:28 a.m., the time the north tower collapsed, AmpSurf will participate in the 9/11 National Paddle Out. This will take place on the bay by the Breezy Point memorial. Participants can register for this event at ampsurf.org. The $50 fee includes a commemorate 9/11 paddle out t-shirt. There will also be a memorial Mass at the Roxbury 9/11 Memorial at 6 p.m. In the event of rain, the Mass will be held at St. Genevieve’s Church. Please note that Breezy Point and Roxbury are private communities, so if you are not a resident, you must be invited by a friend or family member to all events except for the run.

Back-to-School Tips for Parents and Teachers It’s that time much anticipated, yet daunting time again—not just for children and parents— but teachers, therapists, school administrators, paraprofessionals and other special-needs personnel. BACK TO SCHOOL! It’s a time when the transition from summertime freedom at home to being thrust into a host of changes in a new classroom brings up challenges for students, and we all feel it. Thankfully, while researching on how parents and their children can prepare for the new school year, I came across a gem of an article on autismawarenesscentre.com, authored by special-education veteran, Leslie Broun, M.Ed., titled, “Back to School Tips for Parents and Teachers.” I extracted three tips that I thought would be helpful to not just children and parents, but our dedicated school personnel tirelessly toiling every day in the field. 1—About Your Child Parents: Provide the teacher with as much information about your child with regard to his or her likes and dislikes, previously successful strategies, sensory sensitivities, favorite shows, pets, family members, history of communication skills and preferred activities. It can be particularly useful if you prepare an organized document that the teacher can keep and refer to as necessary. Teachers: Although time consuming, for students who are identified as having special learning needs, it is critical to read their school records. You need to know the

student’s history. Read all psychological and occupational therapy assessments making particular note of the most recent recommendations. Discuss with parents and incorporate them into the student’s program where possible. Also, spend time with your student to build a positive interaction pattern and build understanding of the teacher/student nature of your relationship. 2—Home/School Communication Parents: How information is shared between school and home is an important issue. As parents, you need to determine what kind of format works for you. Note that teachers and paraprofessionals cannot spend a long time writing down everything that occurred during the day. If there is a format that was previously successful and answered your needs, share it with your child’s new teacher. Pictures are also very helpful. Teachers can use this information as a basis for conversation and communication skill development with the student. If you have concerns or you think that there is an area of difficulty, do not write about it in the communication book. Call the teacher. What we write can often be misinterpreted or blown out of proportion. Teachers: It is always helpful to keep in mind that a student with autism who has limited verbal skills or is non-verbal cannot tell their parents about their day. The communication book is their voice.

Ideally, it is wonderful when we can involve the student in the home/school communication process as part of their literacy program. This may be with pictures or symbols or the printed word. With time and a consistent approach, this may increase the student’s awareness of the need to communicate information about their day to their family. Do not be overly sensitive if you receive written communication from a parent that appears to be aggressive, troubled or that suggests wrong-doing. That parent may be very stressed. Call the parent. When Something Happens Parents: If you are upset about a particular event or aspect of your child’s program, talk to the teacher about it. The first line of communication should always be the teacher. The teacher will probably not be able to talk on the phone during school hours. Make an appointment to talk after school. Cool off, jot down your concerns and be ready to listen.

Page 33 Teachers: If a parent is upset about something that has happened at school or there is an area of concern, be prepared to spend the time to discuss the issue. It is crucially important to maintain a good relationship and very often this kind of discussion yields a positive and constructive result. Be a good listener. The goal of this kind of discussion is to improve the child’s situation and to maintain an ongoing good relationship between home and school. Both parties must be careful not to jump to conclusions or have preconceived notions about what the other is thinking, feeling or doing. I hope the above is helpful to parents and school personnel easing in to the 2019-2020 school year. 4th Annual Rockaway Beach Bodysurf Contest Set for Saturday This Saturday, September 7 is the 4th Annual Rockaway Beach Bodysurf Contest, and up to 72 bodysurfers will be gathering to not just claim the biggest wave, but bragging rights of winning this year’s gnarly event, hosted by Rockaway Beach Bodysurf Underground (RBBU). The bodysurfing event will be at "The Box" on Beach 84th Street's east jetty. Though registration is closed, spectators are welcome to come out and show their support. Sign in begins at 8:30 a.m. The contest officially kicks off at 10 a.m. According to a RBBU post on Instagram: “We have secured all necessary NYC Parks and NYPD permits for the event, so to cover the added costs, it was necessary to raise this year's entry fee to $35.” All regis-

tered participants get a contest t-shirt and a bodacious time competing with fellow bodysurfers. Co-supporters of the event include Noah and Patagonia. After the contest, the after-party and awards ceremony will be held at Rippers, Beach 86th Boardwalk Concession. This will not be one to miss as surf-riding band, Supertones, will be on the entertainment lineup treating the crowd to their last jam of the season. Broad Channel Put in the Work for Labor Day Labor Day ended with a bang in Broad Channel. Broad Channel residents surely outdid themselves at their annual Labor Day parade featuring floats, costumes, music and more. On Monday, September 2, the weather cleared up enough for the Broad Channel parade to go off without a hitch, which was lucky for all as participants put in a lot of

hard work into their ideas this year. There was everything from a Stranger Things float to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock to a tribute to popular song, “Old Country Road.” After marching down Cross Bay Blvd., everyone gathered at the BCAC field to enjoy a fun-filled time with a DJ, rides, food and more. Letters, we get letters. Reader Richard asked us a darn good question and we had to stop and do some research to answer him. Richard wrote: Dear Bob & Sandy: In your August 22 column in The Rockaway Times, regarding items restricted the

TSA will confiscate, a question was raised. I am one of many people who use a C-Pap (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine). The device uses distilled water to humidify the air breathed by the patient. My experiences are that the smallest distilled water containers are gallon bottles. Sterile water comes in 500 milliliter bottles. Before the current regulations, I was able to carry a sealed 500 milliliter bottle along with my C-Pap machine in a bag noting that it contained medical equipment. I consider that water to be a medical necessity. My question is: considering the stringent rules regarding the total amounts of liquid air passengers can carry, can I transport one small factory-sealed bottle of sterile water or would TSA seize it, thus

forcing me to use tap water of whatever country I’d be vacationing in? I would dispose of both the bottle and leftover contents on the return before heading to the airport. Richard, that was a terrific question and one we should have addressed. To make sure that we were correct, we contacted several airlines to de-

termine what the policy for carrying such liquids was. Almost unanimously the answer was the same. We found out the hard way that even though a liquid item may be in a factory sealed container, you are going to lose it. That happened to us with a very expensive bottle of wine. The TSA agent who confiscated it had a gleam in his eye as he placed it atop the scanner and not in the bin with other confiscated items. We were sure he had a pleasant repast at his evening meal. You can bring a C-Pap machine on board an aircraft so long as it either fits in the overhead bin or under the seat. Otherwise it must be checked at the counter. ically necessary equipment and they take steps to accommodate that. Such machines as C-Pap may not be used on board the aircraft because obviously fluid must be present and that’s a no-no. The distilled or sterile water must be placed in either a separate container or within your checked luggage. Since C-Pap machines are commonly used while asleep, it should not pose a problem while in flight. Even on longer flights, such as the one we recently took from the United States to China and back, the 16 to 18 hours permit you to nap but you’ll have to do it without the C-Pap. Be aware that some airlines will require a 48-hour advance notification before coming on board with distilled water even though it is being checked with luggage. A

strong suggestion: make sure the container is secure and will not be broken, as the baggage handlers do their best to destroy whatever they are placing on or off the aircraft. To show that such things are accommodated, we included in the airlines we questioned was our least favorite, Spirit Airlines. Surprisingly, Spirit’s policy was pretty much in line with the others we spoke with. That’s a fair indicator of how the industry seeks to work with people needing medical devices. That being said, we can’t urge you more strongly to make sure you contact your individual airline well before flight time to determine its individual policy. Do not show up at the airport and expect to be accommodated, if its policy is contrary to what we’ve said here. Richard, again, thank you for a very important question and we hope that answers you. We are always open to clarifying anything we’ve written about. So don’t hesitate to write. All letters will be forwarded from the newspaper to us.

From Ready.gov: Hurricane Preparedness Hurricane season is upon us and runs through November 30. Always be ready. According to Ready.gov: When a hurricane is 36 hours from arriving: turn on your TV or radio to get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions. Restock your emergency preparedness kit. Include food and water sufficient for at least three days, medications, a flashlight, batteries, cash, and firstaid supplies. Plan on how to communicate with family members if you lose power. During disasters, sending texts is usually reliable and faster than making phone calls because phone lines are often overloaded. Review your evacuation zone, evacuation route and shelter locations. You may have to leave quickly, so plan ahead. Keep your car in good working condition and keep the gas tank full. If you have flood insurance, your policy may cover up to $1000 in loss avoidance measures like sandbags and water

pumps to protect your property. Keep receipts and submit them if you need to make a claim. When a hurricane is 18-36 hours away: bring loose, lightweight objects inside that could become projectiles (patio furniture, garbage cans). Cover all of your home’s windows, if possible, including using exterior grade or marine plywood. When a hurricane is 6-18 hours away: Check your TV or radio every 30 minutes for updates. Charge your cell phone now so you will have a full battery if you lose power. When a hurricane is six hours away: If you are not in an area that is recommended for evacuation, stay at home and let others know where you are. Stay away from windows; flying glass from broken windows can injure you. Turn your refrigerator or freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary. If you lose power, food will last longer. Check TV and radio and City websites for the latest updates.

Mardi Gras Merriment in Breezy Point

Breezy knows how to party, especially when it comes to parades. On Saturday, August 31, Breezy Point kicked off Mardi Gras with the 61st Annual Breezy Point Mardi Gras Parade. From bands to floats to coordinated group routines, the creativity was flowing down Bedford Avenue in Breezy Point on Saturday. Everything for a Queen Tribute to a White Claw crew to flashbacks to the

‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and even a much-applauded Mayor Bill de Blasio dressed as a clown, the paradegoers brought claps and laughs in full force. End of Summer Fun in Roxbury By Bill Pritchet

The kids of Roxbury were kept busy this summer with a plethora of activities from swimming lessons and races, to volleyball lessons and even a kite flying day. This was the tenth year for Roxbury swimming lessons given by Kathy Kirker and family. What could be more important than children learning how to swim when they live by the water. Swimming races were brought back to Roxbury eight years ago. This year’s race winners include Michael Wheeler, Caitlyn Wheeler, Haley Printz, Emma McGorty, Ev McGorty, Eden McGorty, Ev Abel and Gracie Abel. Even the adults got in on the action. The adult win-

ners are Jim Dengler, Albert Loyola and Ed McGorty. Volleyball lessons are now in their ninth year. The children were fortunate this year to have Lynn Beruldsen Milano, a professional volleyball teacher and coach, who did amazing things with the kids. She was assisted by Erin Hvidsten, who has been teaching the kids all summer. One of our youngest volleyball players was twoyear-old Alice Bishop, who learned how to bump the volleyball. Roxbury's Kite Flying Day was a huge success aided by a strong cooperating wind. Over 85 kites filled the sky over Roxbury. Wide smiles were shown by the children and Carol Weinsheimer, our senior kite flyer, who flew
