Soak up September Summer
By Katie McFadden
Labor Day has come and gone, which means it’s time for locals to reclaim their beach. Luckily, there’s still plenty going on for all to enjoy. Although it’s September, summer doesn’t officially end until the 21st, so there’s still great weather and lots to do in the next few weeks. As done in previous years, the beach season has been extended. Although lifeguards will be limited, some beaches will be guarded and open to swimmers through Sunday, September 9. There’s still time
to grab a frozen after your beach day, too. Summer bar, Connolly’s Pub, will be open until dusk on weekends through September 23. The concessions are also open all month. The Beach 86th, 97th and 106th concessions are still open, depending on the weather, and each will continue to offer entertainment on the weekends starting around 6 p.m. This weekend, on Friday, September 7, Big Squid performs at Caracas on Beach 106th and the other concessions will also have live music. On Saturday, September 8, Ska Boom plays at Beach
106th, Supertones play at Beach 86th and Tall Juan performs at Beach 97th. On Sunday, September 9, at Beach 106th you’ll find Fools Night Out, Bethlehem Steel plays at Beach 86th Street and the Beach 97th concession will feature a swing dance party. The following weekend, on September 14, the Grayriders play at Beach 106th, the Craig Brown Band plays at Beach 86th, while DJ Rock Onez entertains at Beach 97th. On September 15, the Supertones are back at Beach 97th and DJ Center Party plays the hits at Beach 106th. On September 16th, Squid Acoustic performs at Beach 106th and Real Young & Lazy Horse will be at Beach 97th. In addition to music and food, there are fun events taking place this month. This Saturday, September 8, head to Beach 90th for the 3rd Annual Body Surf Competition, starting around 9 a.m. On September 9, sign up starting at 8 a.m. on Beach 90th Street for the kids’ surf contest as part of the Richie Allen Memorial Surf
Classic. On Saturday, September 15, the Beach 106th Concession will be buzzing. It’s NYC Honey Fest! Enjoy a day celebrating the bees and their honey by purchasing honey from various vendors, watching demonstrations, participating in a honey-eating contest and much more, starting at 11 a.m. On Saturday, September 22, end the summer right with a new and now highly-anticipated event, Poseidon’s Parade. Watch or participate in this family-friendly nautical parade that takes place on the boardwalk from Beach 106th to Beach 95th Street. The parade kicks off at noon. Head to PoseidonsParade.com to register. Last, but not least, finish off September by chucking and sucking at the 4th Annual Rockaway Oyster Fest. This year it’s Saturday, September 29 at Rustwoods. Enjoy three hours of oysters, beer, and music by Indaculture starting at 3 p.m. Tickets are $40 and can be found on Eventbrite.com. Have a happy, endless Rockaway summer!
17 Years Later: Remembering 9/11 By Katie McFadden
It might be easy to forget something that happened 17 years ago, but 9/11 is and never will be one of those things, especially as a tragedy that deeply affected those in Rockaway and Breezy Point. This weekend and on Tuesday, September 11, the Rockaway and Breezy Point communities will pay tribute to those that were killed that tragic day in 2001. Remembrance ceremonies begin Saturday, September 8 with the Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic in honor of Allen, a firefighter and surfer who died in the World Trade Center. The day kicks off at 8 a.m. with registration for the kids surf contest, which starts at 9 a.m. on Beach 90th Street. The age categories include Boys 10 and Under, 11-13 and 14-16, and Girls 12 and under and 13-16. The day will also include boogie boarding and paddle boarding, a DJ, food, drinks, t-shirts, prizes and giveaways, plus a memorial paddleout for a friend, brother, son, uncle and a hero—Richie
Allen. Also on September 8, at 11:15 a.m., the Charles F. Heeran Foundation will be holding a 9/11 memorial Mass at St. Francis de Sales Church on Beach 129th Street. The foundation was named after Charlie Heeran, who worked in Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center. He was 23 when he died on 9/11. However, the Mass will be held in memory of all of those lost that day. Breezy Point will also begin its remembrance ceremonies on

Saturday, September 8, starting with the 3rd Annual 9/11 Remembrance Race. This 5K run/ walk goes from the Roxbury 9/11 Memorial to the Breezy Point Memorial and culminates in an after-party at the Breezy Point ball field featuring the Hell or High Water band, rides, food, drinks, an award ceremony and more. The race starts at 10 a.m. and the party starts at noon. This event helps to raise money for the upkeep of the Roxbury and Breezy Point 9/11 Memorials. With this
comes registration fees of $35 for adults, $15 for those under 21, plus fees if you just want to participate in the after-party. To register for the race, head to www.bpremembers911.com. On Tuesday, September 11, Breezy Point will have its own memorial ceremony. There will be a memorial Mass at the Roxbury 9/11 Memorial at 6 p.m. In the event of rain, the Mass will be held at St. Genevieve’s Church. Rockaway’s remembrance ceremony will be held on the morning of Tuesday, September 11. Head to Tribute Park on Beach 116th Street at 8:30 a.m. for the ceremony that will include a reading of the names of Rockaway residents killed on 9/11 and the placing of roses. There will also be live music by Aerial Acoustics, including Dorothy Wagner and Dennis Smith, with the vocals of Chazmond Peacock and Steven Wagner. This event is made possible by 1-800-FLOWERS, the DeMatteis family and Friends of Tribute Park. Rockaway will never forget.

Confusion on the Q22 Many who took the Q22 bus this week were surprised to find that their bus stop no longer existed. Starting Sunday, September 2, the MTA began a new Q22 bus route with new stops all along the route. The recent changes seemingly appeared without much warning, as signs notifying bus riders of the changes, only went up a few days before they went into effect. However the plan to change the stops goes back a long time. The MTA introduced their plan to change the Q22 bus stops back at the October 2017 Community Board 14 meeting. The plan was met with extreme resistance and the general consensus was to reject the plan. However despite feedback from the community, the MTA moved forward with its plan and held an information session on the changes at the end of May. Now as of Sunday, the plan has gone into effect.
such plans have yet been announced. These new bus changes come as the MTA restores the A and Shuttle train service to its regular schedule after a change-up that took place over the summer for flood protection work. The Rockaway Park shuttle service once again leaves from Beach 116th Street and goes to Broad Channel, where passengers can transfer for the A train, rather than directly board the A train at Beach 116th Street.
To see exactly which bus stops were relocated, refer to the accompanying chart. The MTA says the changes were made to focus service on where ridership is the highest. One change in particular that caught the attention of some is that the last
stop for some westbound Q22 buses is Beach 116th Street via Beach 108th and Beach Channel Drive, stopping at the Rockaway ferry stop. This change sparked concerns that this may mean the free ferry shuttle service may soon come to an end, but no

Finally—Army Corps Releases Updated Study It’s here. After a long wait, the revised draft of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) plan for Rockaway is here. USACE released the “Revised Draft Integrated Hurricane Sandy General Re-evaluation Report/ Environmental Impact Statement, and revised General Conformity Determination” for Rockaway, East Rockaway, and Jamaica Bay on Tuesday, September 4 and the public has until October 22 to respond. With the release of the revised report comes a 45-day period for public comments to be submitted. And you’re going to need to take your time with it. The full report comes in at 316 pages. The focus of this coastal storm risk management study is the tidally affected area within Rockaway Inlet, Rockaway Beach, and Jamaica Bay. It is an updated version of USACE’s last draft on the report, issued in July 2016, and now includes changes made according to comments received on the last version of the report. It
includes the full details on the potential plan to protect Rockaway against future storms and flooding, including measures to create 13 new groins and extend five already-established groins, plus adding more sand, and other protective measures. It also includes the potential impacts of each measure. The full report can be found on the Army Corps' New York District’s web site: http:// www.nan.usace.army.mil/ Missions/Civil-Works/Projects-in-New-York/East-Rockaway-Inlet-to-Rockaway-inlet-Rockaway-Beach/ “This report represents the next step in ensuring stakeholder alignment as we work to increase resiliency for the Rockaway and Jamaica Bay communities," Col. Thomas Asbery, the Army Corps' New York District Commander, said. "We will continue to work with our stakeholders at the federal and non-federal levels to finalize this study towards construction to provide residents of Rocka-

way and surrounding communities with additional flood risk reduction measures increasing the safety of residents within the project area.” "The City applauds the Corps' diligent work to meet this milestone within the timeline agreed upon by Mayor Bill de Blasio and General Semonite, Army Corps' commanding general, last winter,” Jainey Bavishi, director of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, said. “As the City has long said, the Atlantic Shorefront project is crucial to stemming erosion on Rockaway Beach. The City also looks forward to seeing the Corps work with bayside communities to refine the bayside measures proposed in this report. Moreover, we urge the Corps to work
with partners at the City, State, and Federal level to continue to work toward solutions that address the resilience of Jamaica Bay in a comprehensive manner." Don’t miss your chance to have your say. Written comments may be submitted via mail or e-mail. Comments submitted will assist in evaluating the project and will be reflected in the project record. To send comment by mail, address them to Ms. Daria Mazey, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York District Planning Division, Environmental Branch, 26 Federal Plaza, New York, New York 10278-0090. Comments by email, can be sent to Daria Mazey at Daria.S.Mazey@ usace.army.mil or Daniel Falt, project manager, at Daniel.T. Falt@usace.army.mil After public comments are received, USACE hopes to release a final report by the end of the year. They aim to start putting elements of the plan in place starting at the end of 2019.

***** Voting reminder: The state primary election date is Thursday, September 13, 2018. For Democrats, Governor Cuomo is being challenged by Cynthia Nixon. On the State Senate side, Republicans, Slawek Platta and Thomas Sullivan, vie for the right to challenge Joe Addabbo in the November general election. ***** Seasonal reminder: Hurricane season has started and ends November 30. Rockaway and Broad Channel are in Evacuation Zone 1. ***** Councilman Eric Ulrich chaired the Veteran’s Committee and clearly has a soft spot for those who’ve served, but we can’t support his idea to rename PS 114 after John McCain, a national figure. Rockaway has been home to many local heroes and
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2018 therefore many more suitable names might be considered. ***** We don’t have the numbers but anecdotally people are saying Lime and Pace bikes have cut down the number of stolen bikes. Seems to make sense. ***** We said April is the new March because winter wouldn’t end, so we’re hoping everything is pushed back now as well. Temperatures in the City will be over 80 every day in the 10-day forecast (and three days over 90 occurred the first week of September). Rockaway is a bit cooler, of course. ***** The 2019 Photo Contest will have the Poseidon Parade as a category, so get up to the boardwalk on Saturday, September 22. We might also have a “fun/funny” category which means you might want to submit those Mardi Gras photos! ***** Rock the Bald is September 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales. Rock the Bald, as if you didn’t know, is a “shave and
fundraise” event supporting The St. Baldrick's Foundation. St. Baldrick’s is a volunteer-powered charity that funds childhood cancer research grants. Go to Stbaldricks.org/events/BaldoftheBeach2018 ***** The next Community Board meeting is Monday, September 24 at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street. The monthly meetings are usually held on Tuesdays, but 9/11 is a Tuesday as is the beginning of Yom Kippur, 9/18. ***** Kelley Brooke, owner of Community House, is also a golf teaching pro. After sitting out tournament play for years, she entered and was in contention in the recently held LPGA Teaching and Club Pro National Championship. She finished an impressive eighth in the Senior Division. ***** Arverne By The Sea has apartments for rent at its newest development, The Tides. But it’s not just apartments. Cuisine By Claudette is opening a store there and Locals Surf School will
Page 7 have a storefront. And Vino By The Sea, a wine and liquor shop, looks ready to open. ***** The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a Coastal Storm Risk Report and announced a 45-day public comment period (ending October 22). Written comments may be submitted via mail or e-mail. Go to http:// www.nan.usace.army.mil/ for more. ***** Congrats to Commanding Officer of the 101st Precinct on his promotion. Vincent Tavalaro now goes by Deputy Inspector. ***** Bishop Kearney High School is holding a special event to pay a special tribute to the memory of an NYPD detective killed in the line of duty. And it sounds like a lot of fun. It’s a “throwback” event capturing those 70s and 80s dances when Kearney dances drew boys from Nazareth, Xaverian, and Bishop Ford High Schools. The date is Saturday, September 29 (7-10 p.m.). Go to www.BishopKearneyHS.org for tickets and more info.

Bald on the Beach
Curb Your Horse Dear Editor: I saw the story from National Park about “four-legged law enforcement” and how the horses are helpful and become part of the community. The photo of the mounted police on the horses riding along the boardwalk looked great but the article did not state whether these animals wear diapers. They should! Unfortunately, the boardwalk has its share of dog crap. The last thing we need is piles of horse poop. Carol M.
Dear Editor: The month of September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and we hope you will consider joining us for the 3rdAnnual St. Baldrick’s Event, “Bald on the Beach” which will be held on Sunday, September 16 from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. at the St. Francis De Sales gym (219 Beach 129th Street). To help support pediatric cancer initiatives, we have partnered with the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-powered charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Please visit www. stbaldricks.org to learn more and to register for our event (search “Bald on the Beach”). Our event’s success could not be possible without the support of our community and local organizations, such as Rockaway WISH, who do so much work behind the scenes. “Bald at the Beach” is a head-shaving event and
Frank and the barbers at Mr. Giuseppe's have been supporters from the beginning and will be on hand again to provide a great, “tight”, haircut. However, you do not have to shave your head to participate. There will be something for everyone, including face painting for the kids and music provided by DJS@Work. Please come and bring a friend for what will be a great event that will help raise funds and awareness for something we can all get behind- fighting childhood cancer. Kids with cancer are our reason for it all and they are the inspiration behind our community’s event. The sad truth is that childhood cancer research is underfunded and drug development from pharmaceutical companies is more geared to adults. Events like ours will help provide the funding needed and bridge this unfair gap. St. Baldrick’s has made a difference with proven results which can be found on their website. Our peninsula believes all kids should be
able to grow up and turn their dreams into realities and we appreciate your support! Bill Kelly September 11 Dear Editor: I want to thank those who maintain Tribute Park and hold ceremonies on the anniversary of that terrible day. You often see or hear the expression "never forget" but in Rockaway, it's so true. The day and the people who were killed are never forgotten. Thank you! G.R.

BP Resident Tom Sullivan Weighs In On His State Senate Run By Kami-Leigh Agard
Four-generation Breezy Point resident, GOP NYS Senate hopeful, Colonel Thomas Sullivan, is no greenhorn when it comes to serving his country and community, and with the Queens County GOP’s official backing, Sullivan believes that his record of service and business acumen guarantees him a good shot in unseating incumbent Democrat Senator Joseph Addabbo for the NYS Senate 15th District. However, the Colonel first has to face off with fellow GOP candidate, Slawek Platta, in the primaries on Thursday, September 13. The Rockaway Times sat down with Sullivan at his Broad Channel campaign headquarters to discuss his Breezy Point roots; his record of service in the military; lessons learned both in the corporate sector and as a small business owner and community leader; his position on hot button topics such as beach erosion; the Cross Bay Bridge toll; the Williams Pipeline, increased
housing development; and ultimately — why he thinks voters should cast their vote for him not just in next week’s primaries, but in November. Sullivan, a father of three, said his family has been in Breezy for close to 93 years. “My family initially vacationed in Breezy during the summers, but established permanent roots there in 1980. Today, most of us still live on the peninsula including my siblings, parents, nieces and

nephews, and my wife and three children. My sons just finished their first season of lifeguarding here. I think this is the first year they really saw the value of living and working near the beach,” he said. Sullivan said that one of his personal philosophies about being a political representative is that before you represent the people in your community, you should have walked in their shoes, and he has worn many shoes. “For 25 years I served in the military as a reserve with deployments in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. For 23 years, I worked in the corporate financial sector, seeing the ups and downs of the capital markets; and for 10 years, I was a small business owner of a restaurant,” he said. While working in the corporate financial sector, he was on the 96th floor of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Sullivan helped people out of the buildings, and because of his heroic efforts was later award-
ed with the Soldier’s Medal, the highest award for non-combat operations. He said that though Rockaway has rebounded since Sandy, it saddens him to see that many beloved local businesses have not been able to reopen their doors, and that’s part of the reason why he felt the time was right for him to run for state senate. “I’m fully in touch with what it’s like to be a small business owner with all the taxes, rents being as high as they can get, and the regulations on top of it. For example, look at the still closed Harbor Light restaurant in Belle Harbor. Other than the city telling them to cut off 600 square feet of the building, their impending reopening is still at a standstill because of bureaucratic red tape, though it has been rebuilt and ready for opening for months now, but now they again lost the entire summer season. We all benefit when these business are open, not just for their Continued on page 22

Platta Talks State Senate Run By Katie McFadden
“Platta for Senate,” read some signs around town. Who is Slawek Platta? The Rockaway Times recently spoke with the state senate hopeful that will appear on the Republican primary ballot when you cast your votes on Thursday, September 13, and could take on State Senator Joseph Addabbo
in November’s election. Although Platta has the tough job of taking on an opponent that hails from Breezy Point, Thomas Sullivan, some “Platta for Senate” signs have been spotted around the peninsula, especially at local Polish businesses like Polo Euro Market and Kopernik. After all, Platta originally hails from Poland. Platta explained that he has been in the U.S. since 1999, when he went to study law at the University of Florida, but now residing in Middle Village, he proudly calls himself a Queens resident. Platta hopes to serve his neighbors by taking over the state senate seat for District 15, which covers not only parts of Rockaway and Breezy Point, but Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Glendale, Middle Village, Maspeth and parts of South Ozone Park, Ridgewood, Rego Park and Sunnyside. To do so, he’s heavily focused on an issue that affects all Queens residents—fighting against large homeless shelters. Platta doesn’t have any previous political experience, but he knows what it means to stand up for people. For the
last 12 years, Platta has owned his own law practice, The Platta Law Firm, based in Manhattan. When he first started his career, Platta was working for different law firms in the city, practicing immigration law. When he first opened his own practice, it was a one-man show, with Platta working up to 18-hour days. “I worked hard to be successful. Then eventually I was able to hire more people and now we have a few attorneys and paralegals and the law firm is doing very well,” he said. After establishing a successful business, Platta was inspired by another businessman-turned-politician to throw his own hat into the political race for state senate. “I was inspired by the 2016 election of our current president. It showed me that this is a time where people who are successful in business can do more for other people, not just through business, but in public service,” Platta said. And while it’s Platta’s first run for office, this isn’t his first campaign. In 2017, he campaigned to become the grand marshal of the NYC Pulaski Day Parade, and he won the election. “This gave me some experience dealing with public service in the Polish American community and that experience drove me to enter public service on a larger scale,” Platta said. “I realized that I can be helpful, not just in my law practice for the smallest of cases, but for a much broader community, where I can bring my legal experience and public service experience to the table and make sure we have better solutions to certain problems that we face in District 15.” One of the biggest problems Platta believes District 15 faces is large homeless shelters with 100 to 200 plus people, being proposed for residential areas, much to the opposition of neighbors. For instance, a shelter to house 114 mentally ill men has been proposed for an Continued on page 18

Continued from Page 17 area of Ozone Park that is near an elementary school, and another 200-person shelter has been proposed for an area with limited transportation options in Glendale. It is an issue that Queens residents feel so strongly about, that Platta formed a No Homeless Shelter Party that he plans to run on, and it was supported with 4,000 signatures from Queens residents that are against large shelters. Platta stressed that he is not against homeless people but rather the way the city is dealing with them. “I’ve helped homeless people in my past and continue to, but I’m against the politics of putting hundreds of homeless people in a residential area, without any program for these people to eventually return to a normal life. The City of New York doesn’t look at the cause of the homeless problem. It is easy to become homeless with free healthcare, housing and food stamps and the city isn’t con-
cerned with how to prevent this, they’re just dealing with the consequences. It shouldn’t be like this because at the end of the day, taxpayers are paying for the city’s mistakes. I believe in creating programs for the homeless, but I don’t trust when the Department of Homeless Services says they’re going to place 200 homeless people in one area and it’s going to be okay. I don’t think people in District 15 deserve to be treated with this experiment. It’s a scary proposition,” Platta said. Platta also feels this is an issue his opponent, Sullivan, has ignored. “I will always admire Mr. Sullivan’s service to this country, but I don’t think he meets with people when it comes to the homeless shelter issue. I don’t think he understands the pain this issue causes. I haven’t seen him at the protests or conferences about this issue. I want to make sure that every person in our community has a voice and can call me. I’ve gone around and knocked on doors and have
met with people and this has allowed me to deeply connect with them and understand their problems,” he said. Platta says he has also visited Rockaway. Speaking on Rockaway’s issues, Platta said, “of course the biggest issue has been Sandy recovery and this is something on the state and federal level that needs to be improved going forward as it is a problem that people are still facing. Also, when it comes to the beach closures, the city can’t just do what they did without regard to the businesses that are located in that area. By closing the beach, you limit income for businesses. There was no regard to the people that make their living in that area when they made that decision,” Platta said. “Another huge issue is parking. It’s a nightmare, with residents having to drive for 45 minutes to find a parking space. There should be access to parking that will allow residents to park without issue. There are officials that don’t understand
The Rockaway Times Rockaway that could easily make changes, but it hasn’t been addressed.” For those unfamiliar with Platta, a quick Google search will highlight his campaign efforts and background, but a legal case in which Platta faced harassment charges also pops up. When questioned, Platta addressed this, saying, “The case was falsely filed. The charges were dismissed because the allegations were false.” Platta did not speak directly about current state Senator Joseph Addabbo, who has held the position since 2009, but he did address the need to bring in new people to the political world. “I don’t believe in career politicians. I believe in office term limits and want to make sure we’re bringing in new people to politics, so we can see fresh ideas and new ways of solving problems. That’s another reason why I’m running.” To learn more about Platta before primary day, head to www.PlattaforSenate.com.

WORKING HARDEST WHEN IT’S HOTTEST By Heather Kramer
By 6:05 a.m. we’re out the door, before the sun has even thought about coming up. The crew of 13 seem unphased by the early hour and head to their vehicles; they are not expecting much of a mess at the Riis Beach Picnic Area this morning, they did a lot of the work the night before; commonly working overtime to stay ahead of the holiday crowds, and everything these crowds leave behind. “There are some days that your feet can’t even touch the grass because of all the garbage,” Stu Elefant says as he efficiently picks up multiple pieces of garbage with his picker, and drops it into the black plastic contractor bag; this summer is his 10th season with the Riis Team. “It can be discouraging; it’s hard work to make this place look like a national park.” The others clean around us, emptying cans, picking up litter and shooing away seagulls who are helping themselves to the open trays of food left by the Labor Day weekenders from the day before. Also at this early hour, several picnic tables are already occupied by families with coolers, tablecloths, and all the fixings to celebrate the last unofficial day of summer. Riis Park is in fact, a destination. Part of the National Register of Historic Places, and previously a Naval Air Station during World War I, Riis Beach came to fruition as a park in 1937, and became a part of the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area in 1974. Since then it has been forgotten and remembered again. After the opening of the Riis Beach Bazaar, attendance has easily tripled. With more than 9,000 parking spots, a Riis Park Beach bus from Brooklyn, the NYC Ferry, and MTA buses; every mode of transportation is utilized to get here. “Sometimes there are so many bikes on the board-

walk, you can’t see the railing,” Kevin Rapp, who is two years into his job with NPS, said. But they seem to be handling the crowds in stride, despite needing more help. With a fleet of three dump trucks, one crew cab, one garbage truck, one front loader tractor and one beachcomber, they effectively clean the picnic areas, beaches and boardwalk. Their responsibilities are also the giant parking lot, the wall that lines the bay along Beach Channel Drive, and the buildings and ball fields of Ft. Tilden. And when they are not picking up garbage and emptying cans, they are cutting the grass and weed whacking; all the while making it look easy. Not to mention the 17 other employees that work tirelessly to clean the bathrooms. “I’ve got a good crew. If it wasn’t for these guys, it wouldn’t look this good,” their mechanically-minded supervisor, Jimmy Taunton, who has been in charge for 24 years, said. His crew could easily say the same of Taunton. Walking the beat many yards ahead of us, picker and garbage bag in hand, with a noticeable pep in his step, not breaking stride to add, “I have two kids at home and I still have to take out the trash.” His time at Riis Beach has given him perspective on all
the changes. Concessions have opened, more traffic, more beaches becoming available to the public. Back when he started, he’d be lucky to see a couple hundred people using the beach. More people,
means more garbage. “A lot of people from the beach will take their garbage. About 90 percent will clean up after themselves,” Taunton explained. But what about the ones who don’t? “When you come back and it’s all cleaned up, you don’t think twice of it,” Will Baranksy, another young worker says. It’s a tough job. Especially because when you do it well, it can easily go unnoticed. I was considering this while picking up plastic bags, bottles and fishing line while walking the bay-wall along Beach Channel Drive, appreciating the team’s ability to repeat this clean-up routine every stretch of sunny days. But maybe that’s true about life as well, when you look back at the path you just picked, you only notice the parts you missed.

Local Artist, Nigel Scott Hosts Conversations With Blue at Rustwoods By Kami-Leigh Agard
Rockaway Beach resident and multi-faceted internationally-renowned artist and photographer, Nigel Scott, has local art and event space, Rustwoods, awash in a kaleidoscope of blue. With his striking, but seemingly tranquil pieces, you’ll be beckoned to step into the blue and see the world in a new light. On Thursday, August 30, Scott celebrated the opening of his exhibit, Conversations with Blue, at Rustwoods. According to Scott, this exhibit is something he has shown in major galleries in years past, but he painstaking went back and re-fashioned each piece, so like for a bride, each piece seems almost new, maybe something borrowed, but definitely blue. Scott’s range of pieces are so amazingly divergent, yet they all seem to unfold a story through a variety of mediums and subjects. There’s one assortment from a collection of photos that Scott painted over using gouache, a type of water media that is more difficult to use than watercolor because of its opaque and flat textural properties, while painstakingly keeping the texture and movement. Scott said, “I liked using gouache because it’s a natural paint that is compatible with painting photos, and its ability to capture light in the subtlest of shades is what it makes it so attractive, yet challenging.” There’s one painting of a man facing the ocean with a fish surfboard positioned horizontally on his shoulders. If you look carefully, you’ll see the logo, Paul Surf, on the back of his t-shirt. The surfboard shaping company, Paul Surf, was founded by local resident, Paul, who has been has been shaping surfboards for the past 10 years, and his artistry of the board with the ocean and shorefront was captured majestically in this particular piece by Scott. Besides the gouache painted photos, there are cyanotype
silk fabric detailed images of flowers that Scott hand-sewed to silk fabric using silk thread. In the introduction to his photo book, Conversations With Blue, (if you’re lucky, you can find it on various websites, though, we checked, and it’s all sold out!), Scott said, “I grew up in Jamaica with my mother’s love of flowers, and my father’s love of the ocean. Around 1994, I started creating blue prints or cyanotypes after finding about the process in a children’s store. Initially printing with negatives, I was taken back by the blueness of the space and the space of the blueness it imbued on the images.” Cyanotype is a photographic printing process discovered in 1842 by scientist, Sir John Herschel, as a means to reproduce diagrams.
It creates a cyan blue silhouette when an object is placed on a reactive surface and develops in UV light – a blueprint. And ironically, Herschel inspired his friend, Anna Atkins, a botanist, who made cyanotype images of the flora she collected, earning her place as a founding mother of photography. Sounds fittingly like Scott’s discovery of the art. Born in Jamaica, Scott spent a few years working in the fashion industry in Toronto before moving to Paris in 1987, where he lived for 10 years. His fashion photography has been featured in Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Glamour, Max, Cosmopolitan, Life Magazine and more. He said that he just fell into pho-

tography, when he went to Toronto. “I initially went there to work in sales, but then I started taking night courses at the Ontario College of Art. I fell in love with the art, started meeting people, and found a job as a photographer’s assistant,” Scott said. Soon after his arrival in Toronto, Scott began photographing Bob Marley on his first North American tour. In 1987, he had eight solo shows with the Canada-based Jane Corkin Gallery. While in France, Scott won multiple awards from the Festival de la Photo de la Mode. Despite his claim of falling into art, Scott seemingly always had a photographer’s eye. He divulged that as a young boy in Jamaica, he won a Youth National Arts Photography award. Scott said his mother was always supportive of his love for art, but his father was a bit more guarded, as he was concerned about whether his son could actually make living out of it. “My dad, was just being an old school, tough Jamaican parent, but I’m proud that he lived to see some of my accomplishments, though unfortunately, my mom did not,” he shared. For the last four years, Scott has lived and continued his love for art and the ocean in Rockaway. “I used to come out here to surf for years before Sandy. I
fell into surfing while shooting a friend’s wedding in Hawaii, and ever since, the ocean has been wooing me, and here I am feeling blessed in Rockaway,” he said. When asked about why he’s doing this particular exhibit at Rustwoods, Scott nonchalantly said, “Mikal, the owner of Rustwoods asked me, and of course, I was elated to say, yes! I love how he’s developing the art community here, not to mention this is a great venue and beautiful space. Rockaway is a really thriving and beautiful community, and I get the chance to show my work in front of a new audience.” Later this month, on September 23, Scott will be debuting his early works from the late 80s to 2000, which were curated by Clear Gallery Tokyo, at WopArt Fair in Lugano, Switzerland. Though he is eager to go, Scott is excited about his exhibit, Conversations With Blue, at Rustwoods. “I just want people to come, check it out and feel inspired by the inspiring surf, ocean and people of Rockaway,” he said. Scott’s exhibit will be on display at Rustwoods through next Wednesday, September 12. Rustwoods is located at 97-02 Garden, Rockaway Beach Blvd. (behind Whit’s End). services, but for the sales tax revenue they bring in. I don’t see why government officials, who purport to help small businesses, couldn’t cut through the red tape and get this place finally open,” Sullivan said. He said the same goes for NYC Parks’ closing of beaches in front of Rockaway’s Beach 97th concession, due to the ongoing dilemma with beach erosion and the political blame game. “What causes the tensions, which is a black eye to the mayor’s office, from what I observed and heard, our local politicians were not aware of the beach closings on such short notice, and that created a lot of animosity. When you can set out an agenda, and explain to the people why it’s being done, you tell them, we got caught off guard, it was poor planning; but instead our elected representatives are running around playing the blame game. “And what happens is that the people who have the concessions and the folks who come to enjoy the beach — pay for it, and everyone wonders why they’re angry? Whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, I thought we were all supposed to serve our constituents, and it’s obvious that the conversation is not happening. “I’m a compassionate person and an environmentalist, but whether it’s about jetties; opening up more homeless shelters; localizing prisons; deciding whether to rely on wind farms for energy or going with natural gas through the Williams-Transco pipelines; adding more housing without adding schools, and even funding education for undocumented immigrants; hospitals; transportation and parking — we are just going from one hot topic after another without making concrete solutions, and bypassing the voice of the community,” Sullivan said. He says all this could be avoided if there was more open communication between the state, city, local pols and stakeholders. “The state needs to reach down
The Rockaway Times to the city, then the city needs to reach out to the local pols and the people. Instead, they figure it out up there in isolation, and the end result is typically the wrong decision, leaving the community angry,” he said. Regarding the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) fumbling on the concrete solution of building the community’s favored rock jetties, Sullivan emphatically stated, “The short-term fix is what happens too often — dumping $15M worth of sand, and then Mother Nature takes it away. A jetty costs approximately $1M, so with the same money wasted on sand, we can have 15 jetties built. These studies have been done over and over again, and are a waste of time and resources.” Sullivan said both leadership from the top down and the community have to be practical. “It’s really all about economics, and what serves the community best at-large. However, I will make it my business to investigate, get answers and be transparent with the community about the reality,” he said. When asked why should voters go to the polls and vote for him as opposed to his opponent, Platta, in next week’s primary, Sullivan flatly said, “I grew up in this district for 46 years. I went to school here, as do my children. I served my community board for five years, I’ve built playgrounds, funded community activities, helped rebuild after Superstorm Sandy, so I ask you, who has the their finger on the pulse of this community? Me or someone who rents a basement apartment in Maspeth for 13 months? What are his ties to this district? Plus, he and I have very different personal characteristics. I’ve abided by all the laws, and I suggest that he hasn’t.” And as for his hopes for November, Sullivan said, “I believe Senator Addabbo served well, but we need term limits. This district needs someone with the ability and passion to breathe a new life into the communities they serve, and I believe, I’m the one to do it.” For more information on Sullivan and his platforms, check out his website: SullivanforStateSenate.com, Twitter feed: sullivan6thomas and Facebook page: Sullivan for State Senate.

Ask the DOC CLL
By Peter Galvin, MD
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common adult leukemia in the Western world. It accounts for almost 25 percent of all leukemias and 1.3 percent of all cancers in adults. It primarily affects older individuals with more than 70 percent of patients being over 65 years of age. It affects males and whites more than females and those of other races. It is less common in Asian people and more common in Ashkenazi Jews. There is a genetic component, plus it is more common among patients with
Hepatitis C. Those living on farms and those with a history of exposure to Agent Orange are at higher risk, while those with a history of sun exposure are at lower risk. Leukemias are diseases of the bone marrow, where the marrow produces an overabundance of various types of white blood cells. CLL is most commonly found by accident during routine blood testing as it is usually asymptomatic. Bone marrow biopsy is rarely needed to make the diagnosis and is usually performed when anemia or a
low platelet count is seen in the presence of a high white blood cell count. Genetic testing can be performed and may reveal chromosomal mutations that may indicate a worse prognosis. The treatment of CLL, like the treatment of other forms of cancer, has been greatly improved in the last number of years. As I previously mentioned, since CLL is usually asymptomatic, treatment usually consists of monitoring the patient with watchful waiting. Indications for treatment include progressive constitutional symptoms (fever, weakness, weight loss, and night sweats), progressive bone marrow failure (anemia or low platelet count), progressive lymphadenopathy (enlarged lymph nodes), progressive liver or spleen enlargement, and progressive increases in white blood cell counts (doubling time < 6 months). Treatment, when indicated, usually begins with a mixture of chemotherapeutic and biologic agents. The treatment
can be altered by the discovery of chromosomal deletions and mutations. Treatment is often well tolerated and successful in causing remission of disease. Because CLL is a bone marrow disease that affects white blood cells, the development of infections can be a problem as there may not be enough normal white blood cells to fight the infection. Likewise, the use of vaccinations may be problematic and live attenuated (weakened) vaccines should be avoided. An ominous development for patients with CLL is the diagnosis of Richter syndrome (RS). RS is the development of an aggressive lymphoma, usually a B cell lymphoma, within 2 to 6 years after the diagnosis of CLL. RS can be predicted by the detection of certain genetic deletions and mutations. The prognosis for RS with CLL is dismal. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Closing Mic And More
By Lou Pastina
Last Tuesday was the last Open Mic at Connolly’s for the summer of 2018. The results have been catalogued by Professor Squid and made available on SoundCloud. The kindly Professor runs, in my opinion, the best Open Mic in Rockaway, attracting both first-timers and truly talented individuals. There are a group of regulars that come every week, sometimes playing the same songs, sometimes venturing into parts unknown, and then there are the dropins, who come for a night or two and light up the place. I, for one, will be listening to the results all winter long, because there were some absolute gems by people who started out timid in the beginning of the summer and by the end
were dominating the stage. SoundCloud, give it a whirl! Open Mic closing, however, is a metaphor for the whole summer, which started off cold and damp, got really hot and humid, and finished with a flourish of more cold and damp. One local priest estimated that at least 13 weekends had rain, and I take the word of a priest over a weatherman these days. I know that my own troop of merry musicians, the Grayriders, were rained out twice. But in between, there were some awesome performances by our local bands, who seem to be getting better and better. We are truly blessed with great creative musicians and bar owners, who act as patrons promoting music at the beach. And as the summer drifts into fall, a reminder that this year’s Poseidon Parade, the bookend to the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, will take place on the Rockaway Boardwalk on September 22. Among

this year’s judges will be Marie Rudolph and none other than the Lazer himself. I, for one, am letting everyone know upfront that bribes are not only permissible, they are actually encouraged. I mean seriously, shouldn’t Trump, Cuomo and de Blasio be honest and say the same? I do believe that Mrs. Rudolph is above petty bribery, so any bribes meant for her can be siphoned off to me directly. It should be a great time and a lot of fun, and unlike the Coney Island counterpart, is actually family-friendly, so bring the kiddos. And as a side-note, I do believe that the Rockaway contingent won best float in the Mermaid Parade, so expect great things for Poseidon. And speaking of great surprises, how awesome was it that the four corners of Rockaway Beach Blvd. at Beach 97th and 98th Streets became its own little music and food center this summer? With Whit's back and expanded to the space around the corner
known as Rustwoods, and La Barracuda on the corner of 97th, and RBQ on the 98th Street corner, this area became the go-to place this summer. I am hoping for a gentle fall so we can enjoy all these places for the next few months, and RBQ and Whit's all winter. It’s really hard to start a business. It takes vision, capital and elbow grease to make it work. I truly salute all the Rockaway entrepreneurs who have made our little slice of life a great place to live. As fall and winter start to creep into our lives, I encourage everyone to continue to patronize our local establishments, so they can survive through the lean months. And lastly, I salute all the musicians who toil at their craft, trying to get better, trying to make art, opening us up to the beauty in our lives even as darkness sometimes descends. As my friend Dylan Thomas says, “Do not go gently into that good night.” Drop mic, walk off the stage, turn off the light.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2018
Yoga For All Labor Day has come and gone and I hope you managed some beach time for yourself. If not, typically September is a beautiful month here in the Rockaways. For myself, there are always so many changes in September and I welcome them all. Our schedule changes with the new school year. We begin to see new students come back to yoga after a summer outdoors. It’s really special to see all the changes that will happen with each year. Some good, some not so good. Beach yoga was one of the big highlights of my summer, mostly because I met so many new peo-
ple from all walks of life. Taking time to simply listen, be present and get to know someone is a gift. Everyone has a story and some people deal with much suffering in their lives. When they come to yoga, they are looking for healing. I am very aware of their journeys and do my best to offer a balanced practice encouraging peace and calm. It is an honor and pleasure to have this opportunity from the Parks Department to offer free yoga on the beach. When I first started teaching on the beach eight years ago, I
did not have a lot of experience, but soon, the students who attended the classes would teach me how to teach a basic hatha yoga class to all levels. Mostly, I would teach to the new student who I would want to like yoga and feel good about herself/ himself. Very difficult to teach 100 students and know their pains or resistance, and also to teach the advanced student who has a daily practice and comes to beach yoga for the great energy and beauty. It is quite an uplifting experience for me as a teacher. I always walk away in awe of the gracious students who are always so grateful. For everyone out there who ventured out to beach yoga, thank you. Teaching back at the studio is always a gift. If you have never been to Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio, you must try a class. We have a very special place in the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on the 3rd floor. It’s heaven on earth for all who enter. We are blessed to share this space and we welcome all levels. Our classes are diverse, and for me the advanced student is usually the
Page 29 gentle student who moves slowly with a keen awareness. I believe to have a balanced body and mind, you need to modify your workout/yoga classes. Our bodies have so many complexities and with every contraction, we need lengthening of our muscles. The more I practice yoga, the more I want to learn about every aspect of the practice. Breath work takes priority in most classes. Moving the body in an organic motion is of utmost importance. Keep moving even if it’s only your fingers or toes. Let your breath initiate any movement. Let the conversation between your body and mind begin with your breath. I can guarantee you that positive changes will happen for you and everyone around you. Whatever you are feeling inside is projected outwards. Positive energy is contagious. Share your happiness with someone who needs it. We are in service to our community. May you be happy, may you be healthy, may you be free of suffering and may you live with ease. Namaste.

Little Seasoning
Although Labor Day has come and gone, as it does every year, I am always amazed at how so many of my neighbors actually think that, with the passing of Labor Day, forecasted cooler temperatures should be de rigueur on the part of those weather mavens out there in charge of our climate. Hate to be the bearer of bad
news but Labor Day does not constitute an official change of seasons. Yeah, it means that the kids will soon be going back to school, parking spaces will slowly start to reappear as beach traffic eases up, the Q53 bus will pass through Broad Channel on its way to Rockaway and will not be mistaken for a circus clown car, and the lifeguards will disappear from their Starship Enterprise Shuttle Craft stations along the boardwalk. Does that mean summer is over? Most certainly not, or at least not just yet. We are, however, fast approaching September 22 and the Autumnal Equinox, which will officially mark the passing of summer and the start of our fall season. It is one of only two days throughout the year when the earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor
away from the sun, resulting in a "nearly" equal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes. The "nearly" equal hours of day and night is due to refraction of sunlight or a bending of the light's rays that causes the sun to appear above the horizon when the actual position of the sun is below the horizon. And then my good friends, the hours of daylight will dwindle while the hours of darkness expands its reach. The leaves on the trees will blaze with color and then die, dropping from their branches to the ground below as brown mulch. Now I fully realize that there are many of you out there who claim to "love" the fall season. You know, the crispness of the air, the sound of crickets chirping in the daytime, the smell of burning fireplaces, and all that. As far as
I am concerned, autumn is a spectacle of decline, deterioration, and bereavement in the knowledge with the falling temperatures, home heating oil prices will start to rise. It is also a not so gentle reminder that the low skies of November and winter nor'easters are not far behind. That being said, as much as I dislike the fall (and winter), it is continual rain that really serves to throw me into a tizzy. The almost non-stop rain we experienced a few weeks ago had my beloved Grace ("She who must be obeyed") so depressed that she spent days sorrowfully looking through the window. Thankfully the rain stopped after three days and I finally let her in. Happy Fall y'all! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

What pairs well with a biker jacket? A Rockaway Times t-shirt, of course. Belle Harbor resident Chris Gallagher pulled off the look well as he participated in the Frankie “Towkar" Appice Memorial 3 Boro Run in Staten Island last month. Gallagher joined fellow bikers for the event to raise money for veterans. On Saturday, September 22, Gallagher will bike for another good cause when he joins a group of motorcycle-riding volunteers that will escort World War II and Korean War veterans to Long Island MacArthur Airport for the Honor Flight.

THE LITERARY CHICK
The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes
Marilyn Macron By Marilyn Macron, Esq., a.k.a., Maria Cowhey
"Young man, your case, it is proven clear We'll give you seven years penal servitude To be spent far away . . . And the very first thing that you'll know is You've landed in Van Diemen's Land” - The Black Velvet Band In 1787, Great Britain couldn’t keep up with its burgeoning criminal
population and began expelling its convicts to jail compounds on a sparsely inhabited continent on the other side of the globe. England exiled over 160,000 men, women, and children to this inhospitable land of poor soil and unwelcoming habitat. In Robert Hughes’ “The Fatal Shore,” we meet some of the most enterprising and notorious of the exiles. Some of the first folk heroes of the island continent that would later be named Australia, came from this criminal class. Food was scarce, and soon everyone was starving. Prison overseers gave guns to certain able-bodied men to hunt down sustenance in any form. The Bushrangers slaughtered kangaroos en masse. Depletion of the nearby roo population drove the
men, dogs, and guns further into the bush, where they ended up competing with the Aborigines for meat. Literally unshackled, many of these insurgents stole the guns and the dogs and stayed in the bush. There wasn’t much for them to go back to. Treatment of the criminal class steadily became harsher, approached the level of sadism under Major Joseph Foveaux. Flogging with a cat o’ nine tails was the most frequent punishment inflicted, leaving lasting physical and psychological scars. The only act of defiance left was to try to avoid showing pain. “The scarred back became an emblem of rank. So did silence. Convicts called a man who blubbered and screamed at the triangles... a sand-

THE LITERARY CHICK Continued from Page 40 stone, (Sandstone is a common rock found around Sydney; it is soft and crumbles easily). By contrast, the convict who stood up to it in silence was admired as a pebble or an iron man. He would show his stripes (strip for punishment) with disdain, and after the domino (last lash), he would spit at the feet of the man who gave him his red shirt.” The hated prison, Macquarie Harbor, was on the isolated west coast of Van Diemen’s Land, later renamed Tasmania. The only person to break out and live was Irishman Alexander Pearce, who accomplished the feat twice. The first time he escaped with seven other convicts in a sea craft. Upon landfall, they slogged their way through a land lacking in forage, growing ever hungrier. One of the men, Kennely, joked, “I’m so weak, that I could eat a piece of a man.” But then six of the escapees ganged up on the seventh and made short work and short ribs
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2018 of him. Eventually only Pearce and Greenhill were left. Then Greenhill made the mistake of falling sleep. When Pearce was recaptured, he told his story, but other convicts assumed he was lying to cover for comrades still at large. Young Thomas Cox approached him, assured Pearce of his fitness, and begged him to escape again. They had traveled only a few days when they came across King’s River. Cox confessed he could not swim, and more likely out of rage than gluttony, Pearce killed him. Pearce was recaptured, and again gave a truthful account of his escape. This time everyone believed him. He was hanged, autopsied, and his skull sent to The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, where it may still be. A non-fiction book that reads like fiction, this richly detailed history reads with a narrative flow that leaves the reader with a deep understanding of Australia’s Hobbesian birth.
