100 Percent True, 50 Cent Is On The Way By Michael Leboff
Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson is coming to Rockaway, just not in the way you’re thinking. On Saturday, May 16 the famous rapper, turned actor, turned business mogul will be at Rockaway Liquor and Wine Warehouse at 11309 Beach Channel Drive to help drive sales of Effen Vodka, a company in which ‘Fiddy’ invests. Jackson’s rise to fame came in the early 2000’s when the thenstruggling musician and former drug dealer was discovered by Marshall “Eminem” Mathers. Under the tutelage of Mathers and fellow rap icon Dr. Dre, 50 Cent released his breakout album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, in 2003. The album, which featured Jackson’s first big single, “In Da Club,” was a smash hit and has sold over 8 million copies to date. Since then, he has become a man of many hats including boxing promoter, film producer and businessman. The marketing ploy worked well for Effen this past weekend when Jackson signed bottles at Liquor and Wine Warehouse in Syracuse, New York, where he was perform-
ing. According to reports by Syracuse.com, some fans travelled hours to get a signature and others camped out in the liquor store parking lot. The rapper’s appearance at the store in Syracuse’s North Side neighborhood led to 1,400 bottles of Effen, which comes in five different flavors and retails for $30, being sold in a 90-minute span, which equates to about 13 bottles being sold every minute. Olivia Blanco, the owner of Rockaway Liquor and Wine Warehouse, expects upwards of 3,000 fans to descend on the store for the chance to meet Jackson. Despite the crowd, the store will remain open and there will be extra security. “We made sure we stocked up for this,” Blanco said. “We want to make sure every fan gets a bottle.” According to Blanco, the South Jamaica, Queens born rapper will be at Liquor and Wine Warehouse from 4-6 p.m. and will be meeting fans, taking pictures, and signing bottles of Effen. The event is being co-sponsored by Friends of Rockaway and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Sandy-relief organization.

For decades, yes, decades, Riis Park has offered little beyond a beautiful beach (and sometimes not so beautiful) to day trippers and locals alike. The fabulous Rockaway Beach Volleyball League, held on Wednesday evenings in the summer, was always a glimpse into the potential of the National Park neighbor. Now, it seems that potential (and some beer) is ready to be tapped. No doubt noticing the success of the Rockaway Beach concessions (NYC Parks lessees), Gateway officials have moved to resurrect Riis by signing on a Williamsburg/ Greenpoint event company. Brooklyn Night Bazaar will be taking over the concessions at Bay 9 and Bay 6. The company describes itself as “A night market that brings together independent vendors, musicians, chefs, and artists. We also have blacklight mini-golf and table tennis!” Exactly what the company will be bringing to Riis remains to be seen.

So I came across this headline that gave me a chuckle: Chain Of Manhattan Salons Sued For Claiming Tanning Is Like “Drinking 100 Glasses Of Milk.” The suggestion was you’d get a lot of Vitamin D – though the idea of 100 glasses of milk doesn’t make me want to get on a tanning bed, it makes me want to barf. Anyway, barf-inducing or not, it’s false advertising. Going into a coffin to come out like an overdone hash brown is not good for you. (For you fans of “Justified” the recently concluded TV show –the image of Wynn Duffy on the
tanning bed is enough to cease the idea if you were ever so tempted). Of course, Rockaway isn’t the ideal place for tanning bed shops. With all the Irish out here, you’d think there’d be more dermatologists than nail salons. Some people get red putting the trash out. But back to false advertising. Lord knows, I’ve been accused of it for claiming this is a humor column but even you haters out there have to chuckle at this real estate ad. It not only made me laugh, but saved me from figuring how I was gonna write 300 more words this week.

The long-awaited Army Corps Reformulation plan was revealed at a public meeting last Wednesday. In last week’s Rockaway Times, readers were able to get a summary which included the three “Alternatives” the Army Corps is offering for public consideration. By far the most popular – and to the Rockaway Times the only real option – is Alternative 3, the only one with groins (jetties). That choice, however, was puzzling or lacking because the jetty plan only extended to Beach 121st Street. Dan Falt of the Army Corps said the plan addresses the neediest

spots, where erosion is most severe. “The groins were only extended as far as needed to address the historic erosion hot spot in the Beach 90s,” he said. “Several iterations were modeled and studied. Alternative 3 was the optimal reduction in erosion and benefit/cost for renourishments to maintain the design shoreline. Basically, adding that many (more) groins would be very expensive and would not outweigh the cost of adding more sand during renourishment.” He said other options “were considered, modeled, and rejected.” One of those rejected options included extending groins to Beach 149th.

Just another reason to hold off taking away a lane from cars. ***** Your E-Zpass is doing more than allowing you to pass through tolls. The devices are being repurposed to track cars around the streets of New York to figure out traffic patterns (and we wonder what else). There is a “volunteer planting call to action” this Saturday, May 2, at the Shoreview condo at 132 Beach 92nd street. Units here were swamped by Sandy. Like many condos, they have fallen between the regulatory cracks, and were overlooked by insurance companies and the government. Come anytime between 9-5. A young grey seal heard that Beach 116th Street was getting cooler, so he decided to check it out. The marine DFD (Down For the Day) was first spotted on the evening of Sunday, April 26 and was still there Monday morning. Several reports were made to the 100th Precinct and the Riverhead Foundation and Urban Rangers from NYC Parks were on scene to make sure the animal was unharmed by people and dogs taking a morning stroll.
He was a big hit online, as the photos posted to the Rockaway Times Facebook page received more than 350 “Likes” and were picked up by DNAInfo. The Riverhead Foundation said that the animal appeared to be in good condition and it was later reported that the little guy returned to the water on Monday. Riverhead says it is normal for seals relax on the beach. There have been several sightings in the past few months. Call Riverhead at 631-369-9829 to report an animal in distress.

THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 2015 owners, is needed. Janie Simmons. President Shore View Condominiums at Rockaway Beach
Thanks, Hank!
Dear Editor: Many thanks to Hank Iori for his “Civics Corner: BIB + SBA = Built In Inequities” piece in last week’s Rockaway Times. Hank has clearly elucidated the major problem hundreds of Rockaway families are experiencing even as BIB is beginning to experience a rebirth similar to much of the rest of the Rockaways. As President of Shore View Condominiums at Rockaway Beach on Beach 92nd, I was told again and again in no uncertain times by both federal (FEMA, SBA), state and city representatives that, even if the 20 families here at Shore View felt they could not pay back an SBA loan, the only way to get grant money was through the SBA route. I was also told by these representatives early on that the SBA loan process would not mean grant money would be unobtainable; only that grant money would have to be used to pay back the SBA loan. When Senator Schumer fought to have condos and co-ops included as recipients of federal funding, we thought our concerns had finally been addressed. As a result, several times during the two-year SBA process, we hesitated, hoping that grant money
would be awarded prior to signing the loan. That hesitation, together with many other time-consuming obstacles which had to be overcome, meant we did not formally sign the loan until late 2013. Recently, BIB (despite years of being told an act of Congress was necessary to change requirements) has enabled homeowners who signed within one year after Sandy to be eligible for partial reimbursement from BIB. Because we signed just after this deadline, we were disqualified. Our BIB case manager felt she could argue for an exception, and we provided ample documentation for her to do so, but she was not successful. Given the inequities Hank described, and the additional problem of this “one year deadline,” it is imperative that all families be treated fairly. In BIB’s defense, BIB does appear to be considering paying for work that we could not do even with the SBA loan we received (e.g. repairing our parking lot). We are still awaiting this decision. Even if this extra help is provided, the financial burden from the SBA loan we carry (for the next 30 years) is heavy. I raise my voice, with the 20 families I represent, with Hank’s. Equity for all Rockaway residents, including condo

More Ideas for The Engineers
Dear Editor: I am very excited about an inlet barrier to prevent flooding on the bay side, but perhaps it could be made more cost-effective by first using fill to seal off most of the mouth of the bay, and just use a smaller “gate” to completely seal off the bay during a major storm, and allow water to pass through at other times. I live in the Bayswater section, along Norton Drive, and all the houses in my neighborhood got flooded and damaged severely during Sandy. WE CANNOT GO THROUGH THAT AGAIN!! IT ATE OUR GUTS OUT. I am aware of NEPA and SEQR requirements and the time/effort to produce an EIS, but the HUMAN environment is the most important, and every day delayed is another day of risking the homes and fortunes of thousands of residents. Please try to speed up the process before it happens again. What good is closing the barn door AFTER all the cows get out??? Richard Stempel
On The Road Again
Dear Editor: Re: “Boyeling Points” on the woman who leans on her car horn at significant distance from whom or whatever might be in her way has several associates in the “wacky world” of drivers. There’s the driver who crowds your back bumper, until they can pull around you, only to rush up to a red light that will be just as red when you gently cruise up to it. I admit to taking some advantage of that, timing when to drop back, so the fool can blow through the “Red Light Camera” at Beach 140th Street on Beach Channel Drive. I admit not being able to explain the drivers who think that, at 50 MPH on the highway, it’s safe to pass me with a 6 to 12 inch distance between their rear, and my front bumpers as they cut me off. I hardly have room to brake, should it have become necessary, to avoid a collision. Then, these idiots give me the “One Finger Salute,” as if to say, by what right do I have to drive on THEIR roadway? On a similar complaint, what about the drivers who wait until you DO use your turn signal as reason to put the “petal to the metal,” cutting you off when attempting a lane change? They seemed happy to be a small distance behind me in the lane I wish to enter, but my turn signal seems to affect their gas pedal. I’ll close with a comment about the woman who sounds off on her horn. I think I had an interaction with her, years ago, at an intersection, when she blew
The Rockaway Times her horn at me. She ignored the emergency lights and siren of my FDNY ambulance while I was on an assignment, but because of her horn, she caught the attention of an NYPD patrol car, who pulled her over. As with the aforementioned Red Light Camera, sweet revenge without me lifting a finger! Richard Berger
Questioning the Corps
Dear Editor: I read your article about the Army Corps Plan. I’ve lived on the beach for over 55 years and from time to time you can still see the old wooden jetties after a storm. Following Sandy you can see for yourself how well the rock jetties worked in Arverne. My question is why are we studying something that has been a part of the beach for at least the last 55 years (wood jetties). The bigger question is what happens to the beaches west of 122nd Street after they stop the jetties? Oh wait I know just check the last rock jetty in Arverne. How does the beach look west of there? Not too good. So why not continue the rock jetties or groins whatever the study says they are all the way west? STUDY OR STALLING I’m not sure. Freedom is not free! God Bless our Men & Women in the military! Dennis Brady

Pills The Problem?
Dear Editor: I have been hearing a lot about gun incidents in the Rockaways and it got me thinking, which we all should be, that maybe these incidents have to do with the rise of pill addiction on the Peninsula, especially the young. I mean really why would someone pull out a gun to shoot somebody? I am sure it usually has to do with some kind of money dispute. It should be a concern to us as loving parents. I am sure that there will be plenty of us who suffer in silence as we see the people we love become powerless as they fall into addiction. As a community we should take this seriously, our young people are dying. So what do we do, hide in shame? Fight for more services Preach or pray? Or go after these Pharmaceutical Companies that are making them and the Doctors that are prescribing them? We need to get our heads out of the sand and see what’s really happening. Shout it from the rooftops, our youth is in trouble. Kathleen O’Hanlon

Truck-a-Float: A New Way To Stay By Katie McFadden
Need a place for someone to stay this summer? Why not try Truck-aFloat? Truck-a-What? As we await hotels to be built, visitors are mostly left with the options of D Piper Inn, Playland or Airbnb for their overnight stays. Truck-a-Float offers something different than the traditional room. “Truck-a-Float is four floating cabins, which we refer to as pods, that float on Jamaica Bay in Marina 59,” co-owner Maribel Araujo said. “It’s a very simple way of camping, but in a floating cabin.” Each of the four cabins, named Horseshoe, Diamondback, Swan and Barnacle, are made from reused truck caps. Each cabin contains a Queen sized bed, a fan, cooler, mosquito netting, a table, coffee materials and are made to accommodate two people. Each guest has access to the bathroom and showers at Marina 59. Previously, guests were asked to bring their own sheets, but sheets and blankets will now be provided. Araujo, who also owns Caracas, and boyfriend, Andrew Field of Tacoway Beach, started Truck-A-Float in 2012. “It was in response to the lack of accommodations in Rockaway combined with a desire of ours to sleep on the water,” Araujo said. They live in one of the pods each summer. Taking the idea of wanting to live on the water, Araujo reached out to her friends, Matteo Pinto and Carolina Cisneros, who are architects from ComboColab. “Their style has always been building with existing items or retrofitting things and beautifying urban environments,” Araujo said. Together, the group came up with the idea to use old truck caps and turn them into well-built, livable cabins on a floating platform. They launched the business in the summer of 2012, with some decent results. The pods survived Sandy unscathed, since they were able to float with the tide. Araujo says the Trucka-Float business has grown each summer, but mostly through word-
of-mouth. They haven’t done major advertising for the business, since there are only four pods, and might not meet everyone’s expectations. “We wanted it to be known in a way where people either experienced it and told their friends about it, or people are familiar with the marina, rather than dealing with people who think they’re going to walk into a luxurious room. This is a simple way of camping,” Araujo said. “There’s no concierge waiting for you to check in and check out or take your suitcase. It’s self check-in and check-out. You have to walk out of the cabin to go to the bathrooms, just like you would if you were camping. People make ideas in their head of what this is, but it’s a very simple thing.” For Araujo and Field, the situation is perfect. “We live in one of the pods for the whole summer. It’s a perfect place to unplug from the crazy summer days out there. It’s super peaceful and extremely quiet. It reminds us that we can have a life in a very simple space. We love to go there every night and relax and disconnect, and the next morning we go back to our crazy restaurant life,” she said. Reservations are now being taken for those who plan to visit in the summer and some weekends are already filling up. Araujo hopes to fill more pods during the weekdays as well. It costs $75 for a weeknight, $110 for a weekend night, or $190 for a whole weekend to rent a pod. The season starts May 15, the same day Caracas and other concessions open. Araujo hopes that Truck-a-Float will continue to grow. They want to add solar panels to the pods, so they’re even more ecofriendly and they’d like to add more pods to the marina. Truck-a-Float is even starting to get worldwide attention. Pinto and Cisneros have entered the idea in different architecture contests and they’ve gotten rave reviews. “We keep doing it with the hope that someone in like Sweden or Costa Rica would partner up and bring it there,” Araujo said, adding that a friend is already Continued on page 20

Take It Slow Go slow, take in all the goodness that surrounds you. Finally, we are seeing the signs of spring. The sun is beginning to shine brightly and we are able to go out walking again. The gardeners are out in full force. Recently, I took the opportunity on a sunny day to walk to the beach. On my way, one of my neighbors, beautiful Sona, was sitting on her patio, basking in the sun on her Adirondack chair. We greeted one another and instead of continuing on my walk I took the time to speak with her. She asked me, “Are you ready to come into my home and look at my artwork?” Something I had been promising to do all year but I haven’t taken the time to do so. I smiled and said, “I am most definitely ready to come in to see your work.” Well I was pleasantly surprised by her beautiful artwork. She had approximately 300 drawings for me to look at and take whatever I liked. They were extraordinary works of art that were done with such love and passion, and of course, skill. She has been an artist her entire life and knew exactly who she was. This was her calling and she was so happy in her home in Rockaway even though she has lived here a short time. I was really impressed with her positive attitude after this long, cold winter. But then I realized she is surrounded by her life’s work and feels so good about herself because art speaks to
her soul. We sat and spoke for a good amount of time and I learned so much from Sona about life. Go slow, enjoy the moments and do what you love. My passion is yoga. It speaks to me and I feel so good about myself and others when I practice. My goal is to reach out to as many people as possible and teach them what I know about yoga. It is really a simple practice that teaches you so much about yourself. I believe and know there are amazing healing properties that come with this practice. Everyone from all walks of life can practice yoga. Do not be afraid or embarrassed to go to a class. There is no judgment, competition or expectations when you are in class. Your mat is your small piece of real estate. Find a teacher who resonates with you and begin to make it part of your life. It will prove to be an invaluable tool. Slow down, find your passion and follow it. Everyone has a path and when you find the right one, you know it and are forever happy. We may have painful times in our lives, but suffering is optional. Choose to be happy, content and positive. It’s the secret to a great life and it doesn’t cost anything. Number 1 on my list is positive attitude. May you all be happy, healthy, content and full of joy. Love yourself, love what you do and then sit back and become the witness. Namaste.

BOOM! Digital Assets Count In Estate Planning by you. If you do not respond to the inquiry by Google, a family member or friend whose contact information you have provided will be contacted. Once that individual confirms you are in fact deceased, Google will do what you have instructed with the accounts and either delete them or share the information with designated individuals. You may feel that digital estate planning may not be something that you have a need for, and you may be right. It is important, however, to re-
view how you pay your bills, access your financial accounts, communicate with family and friends, even how you share family photos. When you think of your online presence in this manner, you may realize that more of your personal information is memorialized online than you originally anticipated. Deidre M. Estate planning is an important process through which an individual can ensure that his or her property, whether financial or sentimental, go to the people of their choosing after they pass. While this process can be unpleasant as it forces us to think about our own mortality, it is the only way to guarantee that our estate not only takes advantage of all available tax benefits and planning, but also that the assets we worked all of our lives to acquire end up in the right hands. In today’s technological world, our estate planning doesn’t end with the execution of a Last Will and Testament or a Trust, but when we also consider our “digital estate plan.” Accounts such as Gmail, Facebook, Amazon, or other places we frequent online should also be considered when making arrangements for the end of our life. While we tend to think mainly of our financial resources and property when finalizing our estate plan, it is important to remember that accounts such as LinkedIn or Snapfish should be dealt with as well after death so that your executor does not have to try to figure out what you intended to happen to these accounts. This is especially important as these accounts generally contain a lot of personal and financial information, which make them vulnerable to identity theft or fraud, especially if no one has the ability to monitor the account activity. Your digital estate plan can be as simple as writing down a list of site
where you have a financial presence, such as online bank, brokerage and purchasing accounts and including your username and passwords so that your executor can easily gain access to your accounts after your passing. Services such as Legacy Locker and SecureSafe, which encrypt and store all of your account information and passwords in one place, are available tools to help store passwords and other data for beneficiaries. After your death, your executor is provided with all of the information you have stored, making the administration of your estate faster and easier. Your usernames and passwords should not be included in your Last Will and Testament, however, as this document becomes a public record in the event that it needs to be probated by your executor. In addition to making your account information available to your executor, he or she should also be provided with your instructions or intentions regarding the specific accounts. For example, you may want to deactivate your Facebook account and make sure that your information is deleted from your Amazon Prime account to ensure that no fraudulent orders are placed. Companies like Google are aware of the importance of digital estate planning and has a free service for its members called Google Inactive Account Manager. The service works by sending you an e-mail or text if your account has been inactive for a period of time that has been predetermined

Phil Wants More Funding For NYPD Nancy J. Brady, R.N., Esq. Linda Faith Marshak, Esq. Alexander Sam Bader, Esq. Deirdre Maeve Baker, Esq.
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder wants New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to release $60 million in state aid for law enforcement safety upgrades. The funds, which were allocated in the 20152016 State Budget, are currently with the State Division of Budget. “This state funding will keep our men and women in blue safe as they risk their lives to keep our neighborhoods crime-free,” Goldfeder said. “I urge Governor Cuomo and the Division of Budget to release this money to the NYPD immediately.” In a letter to Governor Cuomo, Assemblyman Goldfeder requested the state expedite the release of $60 million dollars in funds earmarked for municipal law enforcement agencies state-wide to

The need for improved safety equipment is great enough that some NYPD officers have resorted to replacing outdated equipment themselves, Goldfeder wrote. The Assemblyman emphasized that any delay could potentially endanger officers as local communities in the city face increases in criminal activity coming into the summer months. “Our local NYPD officers put their lives on the line each and every day to keep us safe” Goldfeder explained. “We have an obligation make sure they have the tools and resources they need, not only to do their jobs, but to come home to their families safe and sound.”

The votes are in and the results of the 2015 Participatory Budget process for District 32 are here. After spending three weeks collecting votes at various locations around the neighborhood, a group of PB delegates counted 691 total ballots on Monday, April 20 to determine the projects that will be funded with public funding allocated for Councilman Eric Ulrich’s southern part of the district for Fiscal Year 2016. The four projects that will be awarded are upgrades to schools, including Beach Channel Campus, Scholars’ Academy, PS 46, PS 114, PS 317, totaling $345,000. This project received 506 votes. All-American Park in Broad Channel will receive $175,000 for the removal of the asphalt to create
another baseball field. That project received 366 votes. Another $300,000 will go toward improvements to the 9/11 Tribute Park on Beach 116th street, including a decorative arch entry gate. The Tribute Park got 354 votes. Finally, $500,000 will go toward repairing the center medians along Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel between 1st and 5th Roads, which received 353 votes. The combined cost of these four projects total $1.32 million. Ulrich will seek additional funding during budget negotiations over the next month and a half to see if additional funding can be made available for other projects on the ballot. There may be additional monies (specific to DOT for instance) that may also be available for certain items that were on the ballot.

RTC Brings Yonkers to Rockaway darkness and despair. Susan Corning and Lynda Browning offer tour de force performances as the stern and unyielding German Grandmother and her adult but childlike and somewhat simple minded daughter, Bella, respectively. The role of Arty is alternated between Andrew Feldman and Aidan Lawrence while the role of his older brother, Jay, is shared by Raimondo Graziano and Stephen Wagner. These four young men are all
such amazing talents that no matter which performance audience members attend, they are sure to see standout performances giving the two central characters in the play great humor and pathos. The boys’ father, Eddie, is played by RTC newcomer Bob Alpert who portrays a widower left to bring up his two young sons alone and who must beg the assistance of his seemingly unsympathetic mother. Eddie’s brother, Louie, is a gangster who drops in on the boys unexpectedly while they are staying with their grandmother. Louie is played very skillfully by RTC veteran actor Stephen Ryan, who evokes both fear and admiration from his young nephews. The cast is rounded out by Gertrude, the fourth of Grandma’s children. Like her siblings, Gert is also in someway damaged. She has a breathing problem which often makes her speech unintelligible. Although Neil Simon is known for his hilarious comedies, Lost in Yonkers differs greatly from his usual formula. The story is sad and extremely emotional. However, much of the dialogue and outrageous situations are trademark
Neil Simon. It takes a really professional cast of actors like this one to perfectly deliver all the dark and light nuances of the play. See for yourself. There are still three remaining performances of Lost in Yonkers, on Friday and Saturday night at 8PM followed by a Sunday matinee at 2PM. You don’t want to miss out. -He Is Unforgettable By Gianna Capozzi
Me and my Grandpa, just like two peas in a pod. He is a special man in my life, who is as sweet as a strawberry. Grandpa is my prince, who comes to my rescue when I’m feeling down. He comes to save me, not with a sword or a shield, but with his love and humor. For almost eleven years now, Grandpa has helped me and taught me. People say that getting old is the worst time of your life, but Grandpa insists that he’s living to spend more time with his family, experience amazing things, and show even more love to the special people in his life. Me and my Grandpa, just like two peas in a pod. Me and my Grandpa, just like the moon and the stars. We fit together.
-The Cyclone By Aiden Keane
My eyes widen like there’s jalapeno juice in them. My mouth drops open as I behold the screaming torturous road, otherwise known as The Cyclone. My stomach turns to stone and my feet are cemented to the ground. Fear flushes through me like the rushing currents down a river. My best friend wants to ride it more than anything, like a greedy man and a crown jewel. “C’mon Aiden don’t be a chicken,” he teases. “Even a chicken would ride this!” The blue, pure ocean in my mind turns into a gray, foggy mist of nervousness. I can’t break my friend’s heart and hold him back, but I can’t lose my heart by going on that thing. Will my spine fall out, will I break my neck, will I lose my legs? I shiver as if I’m in the Arctic. “Gulp!” I manage to let out through my slowly cracking lungs. I hear yells like rolls of thunder. How bad could it be I wonder. One by one I see the victims entering the cages of doom. Inch by inch I
limp over to the ticket booth. It’s my turn to be measured. “Sorry you’re two inches short” a tall man declares after landing me on an oversized ruler. I fall to my knees and thank God! For once I am glad to be small. Nobody blames me and for that I am grateful. My friend sighs, “Maybe next time.” But, if there is a “next time”, height won’t be the only thing I’ll lack.
-Bonding With Dad By Anthony Licato It was an hour past my bedtime as our car crept slowly as a snail through traffic. I had just finished football practice and I was hungry as a coyote. My dad parked at the one spot open and we went into the Chinese restaurant, “East Meets West”. Most people find a connection with their dad in a wonderful place; I did it in a Chinese restaurant. As we sat in the restaurant, we started to talk about football. My dad loves football and is the head coach of my team. He complimented me, “Anthony, you had the footwork down today,” he said proudly and then he smiled. This really meant a lot to me since trying to get praise from my dad is like trying to get President Obama to invent National Donut Day. Since we were still having tryouts, it was good to know that I still had a chance at becoming quarterback. After that compliment, I was outside all summer practicing my footwork and throwing power. I have an arm like a rocket. At present, I am the quarterback for the Lynvet Jets. Thinking back to that moment in the restaurant, I can see that it was very important. Whenever I get tired of practicing, this memory pushes me on.

Dishing the
DIRT Food Movement Heating Up in Rockaway! By Antoinette DeMetropolis Not only are restaurants popping up all over, but so are alternative options to the status quo supermarket. This gets me excited because I would often feel like shopping for my family was a fulltime job. No longer will I have to drive to Brooklyn just to get fresh, organically grown produce. After a successful test run during the winter, Edgemere Farm will continue with it’s commitment to
provide Rockaway with the freshest organically grown vegetables! On their website, www.edgemerefarm.org/csa, they are now selling summer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. Each box will include vegetables grown at Edgemere Farm, picked the day before and only travel from the rows they originate from, into your home. You can’t get much fresher than that! The boxes will be supplemented with vegetables and eggs from other local farms within NY that follow the same strict growing practices. Joining in on the action will be Arts in Parts, offering their famous bread. Edgemere Farm will also be holding a Saturday market start-
ing May 2 at their farm stand on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 45th Street. At the market you will find fresh vegetables, plants, Rockaway herbs, flowers, honey, syrup and other local goodies. You will also have the opportunity to speak directly with the farmers about growing methods, storing and preparation. Down the road in Arverne, Nancy Oumarou has started a Farmigo group out of her home. If you are not familiar with Farmigo, it’s an online shopping community where you purchase fresh local items from vegetables to dry goods. The variety is wonderful, there are organic options and the company provides a nice bio about each farm. Pickups are every Monday from 7-9 p.m. and there is no commitment. For more information, you can visit www.farmigo.com. Breezy Point will also be holding a farmer’s market every Saturday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. on 208th Street. Tabora Farm and Orchard will be providing fresh vegetables, flowers, and bakery items starting in May. I didn’t find any information on growing practices on their website, but I’m excited to go check it out and talk to the farmers. Their cakes and pies look amazing! Updates can be found at www.facebook.com/breezypointfarmersmarket.
Through GrowNYC, the Rockaway Beach Youthmarket will also be back this year on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 58th Street. I was disappointed that they did not carry organic produce in previous years, nor did the workers seem informed about growing practices, but they are local and I was impressed at their setup. You can find more information at http://www.grownyc.org/youthmarket/rockawaybeach. With all of these choices, I may only have to visit the supermarket for paper towels and garbage bags! Try out any of these options that will work for you and support the local food movement. There is no stronger vote than choosing to purchase fresh food from local markets over something that travelled halfway around the world before it reached your plate.

Just One Choice So Kevin Boyle knocked it out of the park with his article “Army Corps Plans to Make Rockaway Strong” in last week’s edition of The Rockaway Times! He was on the mark with the facts on all of the alternatives being discussed between the Rockaway peninsula communities as well as the neighborhoods in and around Jamaica Bay and the Army Corps of Engineers As you can all guess, my choice is Alternative 3, the only alternative which provides groins to the major “hot spots” of sand erosion between Beach 92nd and Beach 122nd. Also in Alternative 3, there will be an extension of groins in Edgemere and Far Rockaway and a new groin will be installed at Beach 34th. All one has to do to agree with
Alternative 3 is to stand on the Beach 86th groin, aka-jetty and look to the east, then look to the west. What you will see when you look east, is a massive stone groin field that goes from Beach 86th to Beach 36th. What you see is strong beaches being held together by these groins. When you look west from the Beach 86th groin, you will notice that there are no stone groins, just remnants of old timber groins which once held the sand of these beaches in place. What you will also see is significantly thinner beaches as the sand, which was in the placed in the summer of 2014, is rapidly eroding. So while the Army Corps have studied our Rockaway Peninsula beaches for over 13 years now, all they ever had to do to pass their
own test of the 2003 Rockaway reformulation was to stand at the Beach 86th groin and look east then west. The proof is in the pudding! If you see what I see at Beach 86th and agree that Alternative 3 is the right choice, please make sure you write an email to Robert Smith -Robert.j.smith@usace.army.mil - Please let him know that you would like the Army Corps to seriously consider alternative 3 and add groins all the way to beach 148th! Just a little update on our long lost Boardwalk Designer CH2M Hill. Seems that according the United States Department of Justice website, in a post from March 7, 2013: “CH2M Hill Hanford Group Inc. Admits Criminal Conduct, Parent Company Agrees to Cooperate in Ongoing Investigation and Pay $18.5 Million to Resolve Civil and Criminal Allegations The Justice Department, in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington, announced today that Coloradobased CH2M Hill Hanford Group Inc. (CHG) and its parent company, CH2M Hill Companies Ltd. (CH2M Hill) have agreed that CHG committed federal criminal violations, defrauding the public by engaging in years of widespread
The Rockaway Times time card fraud. In order to resolve CHG’s civil and criminal liability, CH2M Hill has agreed to pay a total of $18.5 million, commit an additional $500,000 towards accountability systems, consent to a corporate monitor, and to continue actively cooperating with the ongoing fraud investigation. Between 1999 and 2008, CH2M Hill had a Department of Energy contract to manage and clean 177 large underground storage tanks containing mixed radioactive and hazardous waste at the Department of Energy’s Hanford Nuclear Site in southeastern Washington (the Tank Farms Contract). The Hanford Site was used for the production of nuclear weapons during World War II and the Cold War. According to the statement of facts agreed to by the United States and CH2M Hill, CHG hourly employees involved in the cleanup routinely overstated the number of hours they worked, and CHG management condoned the practice and submitted inflated claims to the Department of Energy that included the fraudulently claimed hours.” I wonder if NYC Parks and NYC EDC ever thought that it would be a good idea to look into the background of a company before they simply handed it an $8 million contract.

Ideas for Smarter Transportation Simple Right of Way for Buses Would Save Time and Money! Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is viewed as an innovation. It sounds great in theory because a bus can carry many more passengers than several cars taking the same amount of road space. However, there is a big difference between theory and reality. In New York City, we have Select Bus Service (SBS), our own scaled down version of BRT. Its success is debatable. None of the claims have been substantiated. If you listen to them, there are no losers. No plan helps everyone. Why have the results of the MTA’s Transit Forecasting Model not been made public? How does BRT differ from SBS and what are the costs? Great questions for which we have few answers. The proposed SBS route on Woodhaven and Cross Bay Boulevards was budgeted at $28 million. Ongoing costs such as for maintaining lane markings, signage, cameras, street fare machines, and for enforcement personnel are substantial and have not been disclosed. After the SBS plan was initially presented, there was a bait and switch to the more ambitious BRT costing $200 million. A plan costing nearly ten times the cost should provide ten times the benefit. There is a big push for SBS and BRT because the Federal government will pay most of the initial costs. Neither plan is a panacea. Even if they are as successful as claimed, neither will ever be instituted on more than a handful of bus routes.
What we need is an overhaul of bus routes. Many of our present routes were designed to serve the generation from pre-World War II. We need a bus system that is reliable. SBS is regarded by many as being no more reliable than the limited service it is replacing. We need a system that serves more than the Jamaica and Flushing subways enabling us to get across Queens in under two hours. We need to rebuild the abandoned Rockaway Beach Line, two to six blocks east of Woodhaven Boulevard, which would also stimulate economic development. That was not even considered. A simple state law requiring vehicles to give buses the right of way when leaving a bus stop would have a huge effect on speeding bus service and would save more time than exclusive bus lanes. It would also affect every bus route, not only ten percent of them and would be less disruptive and more effective in shortening bus travel times. Motorists would not be greatly inconvenienced with the removal of two traffic lanes and the banning of heavily used left turns at Metropolitan Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard. It wouldn’t cost $200 million plus ongoing costs. Attend an SBS workshop (see the DOT website) to let officials know what you think of their foolhardy and wasteful plan. It is your money and your future. Allan Rosen is a former Director of Bus Planning for MTA NYCT and currently blogs for Sheepshead Bites,

Intern Samples Rockaway By Sheneca Sharpe As a resident of Rockaway for eight years now, I’ve never really tried the “Rockaway cuisine.” I have to admit, I have not done much more than try a slice of pizza from down the block. In recent years. restaurants have been popping up and with Taste of Rockaway Beach on schedule, I decided to try the Rockaway cuisine myself. Here are my thoughts… For people who don’t know that Taste of Rockaway Beach is, it’s basically a semi-annual event where participating restaurants give out samples of their food for the public to try with the hopes that they’ll come again. A record 13 places offered samples: 101 Deli, Whit’s End, Playland Motel, Chicks To Go, Surfside Bagels, The Rock, Elegante, Sayra’s, Uncle Louie G’s, Rockaway Roasters, Thai Rock, and Bungalow Bar. The first stop was the 101 Deli. They were generous with their samples which included, a spaghetti sandwich, a walnut brownie, and pulled pork. As a person who has never heard of a spaghetti sandwich, it was definitely a new experience! But I actually enjoyed it. I almost felt like a little kid eating it especially with the cozy atmosphere. Next was Playland Motel, when walking in it definitely had that relaxed beach vibe, which I love in restaurants. Their portions were decently sized and they kept coming! As a girl
who enjoys eating, I greatly appreciated that. First to come out were these delicious ribs that had this smoky taste and the meat fell off the bone. They were those ribs that covered your fingers in BBQ sauce and made it look like you had a BBQ mustache, but you didn’t care because it was that good. After the ribs was a watermelon mint feta cheese arugula salad. You wouldn’t think that cheese and watermelon would go together, but they created this beautiful marriage. Last were the clam fritters. As a person who loves seafood, my expectations were high and they were exceeded. The clam was fresh and the corn was sweet; it was perfect. Playland Motel was just great. Next stop was Chicks to Go. Even though I was already getting full, I was ready for their chicken empanada. It was crispy, the chicken was tender and the cheese was amazing. The atmosphere had this modern meets old school feel which I enjoyed. Up the block was Whit’s End, which is known for its brick oven pizza. Unfortunately, an eggplant dish was offered. I was really hoping to sample the pizza and was a little disappointed. The décor was cool and I will go back and try the pizza soon. Up next was Surfside Bagels, which was generous and offered buffalo chicken lasagna, a kimchi bagel, and a lemon iced tea. The new kid on the block, Rockaway
Roasters, definitely left an impression on me with their décor. It was pretty amazing with its coffee bags used as a ceiling. I was offered a slice of nutella banana bread, which was delicious, soft, and sweet. It had a nice relaxing environment and you could spend time with a friend for hours there. Elegante, a place known for their pizza, definitely showed that they knew what they were doing. They offered a “Grandma Slice.” I have two determining factors for a pizza, which is the crust and the sauce. The crust wasn’t amazing, but the sauce was delicious! Uncle Louie G’s was the next on the list. I loved the colorful atmosphere, it gave me that childlike experience. I received a sample of Mucho Mango Ice, which was delicious and refreshing. Finally there was Thai Rock. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the restaurant, so my expectations were high. First of all the environment was
amazing with bold colors and paintings. I was offered pad thai noodles, which were sweet yet savory. The live music was another great touch. Being my first time going to Taste of Rockaway Beach, I was pleasantly surprised with the food Rockaway had to offer. It showed me a new side of the Rockaways, and I will be visiting some of these restaurants in the near future. So many places, so little time! I will try Uma’s and Bungalow Bar next time. I have to wait a few years to enjoy the wine bars, Sayra’s and The Rock! (Sheneca Sharpe is a senior at Rockaway Park High school an intern at The Rockaway Times. She will be attending Buffalo State College in the fall).

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon
Hats And Horses Don’t forget, come on down and make the Broad Channel VFW your “Old Kentucky Home for a Day,” this Saturday afternoon, May 2 as they host “Hats and Horses Day” to celebrate the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby’s official beverage, the mint julep, which has been promoted in association with this annual race since 1938, is a delight definitely worth expounding upon. A traditional mint julep contains mint leaf, bourbon, sugar and water with the mint used as a gar-
nish to introduce flavor and aroma through the nose. While this recipe is accepted as standard, a popular variation exists where the mint is “muddled” or crushed then mixed into the drink itself to enhance flavoring. Churchill Downs actually offers (or at least used to offer) an extra premium, custom-made, mint julep at a cost of $1,000 with all proceeds going to charities that support retired thoroughbred racers. This “grand” libation is served in a goldplated goblet and features Woodford
Reserve bourbon, imported Irish mint, spring water ice cubes from the Bavarian Alps, Australian sugar and a sterling silver straw. This Saturday, in keeping with the grand tradition of the Derby, the Broad Channel VFW will be celebrating “Hats and Horses Day” and offering it’s very own “extra premium custom made” mint julep served in a plastic cup with Jim Beam bourbon, mint imported from the produce section of the Rockaway Waldbaum’s, New York City tap water ice cubes, Domino sugar and a plastic straw! The cost will be substantially less than the $1.000 being charged at Churchill Downs but all proceeds will go to fund the VFW’s services for our disabled vets. Danny Ruscillo wants to remind all of us that “Our Police Officers put their lives on the line every day” so both he and all the members of the 100th Precinct Community Council are asking all those who can to join with them in commemorating National Police Week with a short candle light (or flashlight) vigil in front of the 100th Precinct on Wednesday evening, May 13, from 8:30 pm to 9:00 pm. It is with a heavy heart that we extend our sincere sympathy to our neighbor Gloria Tubridy on the recent loss of a long time friend...her dog, Taxi. Someone once said that the one absolutely unselfish friend
that anyone can have in this selfish world, the one friend that will never desert them, the one friend that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is their dog. Truer words were never spoken. Before I go I would like to take this opportunity to wish my two “Irish Twins,” Amy and Victoria very happy birthdays! Vicky turned 19 on April 23 and Amy turned 20 the following day, April 24. The day my second daughter (Vicky) was born, 364 days to the day after her older sister, I asked my mother who was in her late 70’s at the time if she had any advice for me. Her simple response to me was “You’re not the sharpest knife in the drawer but you obviously have a grand sense of humor, you’ll be fine!” She was right! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else? Contact Information: Email – rtbetweenthebridges@gmail.com

Audobon Advice On The Environment By Joan Flynn
Some of us in Rockaway are fortunate enough to have a little plot of dirt to call our own. We love our lawns - richly green, cropped, weedless, and insect-free. But this comes at a cost. Consider how many gallons of water and pounds of pesticides it takes to keep lawns lush. Depending on the conditions, a 25-by-40-foot yard can drink 10,000 gallons of water in a summer. Lawn care accounts for 70 million pounds of pesticides applied in the United States each year, 10 times more than even what is used in farming. The toxic runoff percolates into groundwater, threatening wildlife and human health. And how does this look from a “birds eye” view? For
a bird searching for a nice place to raise a family, the classic yard—a tidy bed of grass, one or two shade trees, and a row of leafy foundation plantings imported from China— must be like a foreclosed fixerupper in a bad neighborhood. The accommodations are spare and all the local restaurants are dives. Think about the fact that wherever green grass grows there was once habitat—a forest, prairie, wetland, or even a desert. Healthy bird communities are inextricably linked to healthy insect populations. Ninety-six percent of terrestrial North American birds raise their young on insects. And not just any insects. Mostly caterpillars, rich in fat and protein, they are essential for a bird trying to keep up with the demands of a hungry family.
Insects that spent millions of years eating native plants passed up a buffet of alien plants—because they either can’t or won’t eat them—does that mean areas dominated by foreign plants would support fewer insects? And if the insect populations plummeted, would birds starve? Doug Tallamy, an entomology professor at University of Delaware, where he has worked for 32 years, did an exhaustive search of the scientific literature to see whether he could find answers to those questions, but there was almost nothing. So he began studying how throngs of proliferating exotic plants are affecting insect populations and, therefore, the birds that eat them. He discovered that healthy bird communities are inextricably linked to healthy insect populations. The study confirmed Tallamy’s suspicions that gardeners could play a pivotal role in creating safe havens for wildlife. (An estimated 85 percent of invasive woody plants spreading through wild areas originally escaped from home gardens.) Thus he opens his landmark book, Bringing Nature Home, with a call to action: “For the first time in its history, gardening has taken on a role that transcends the needs of the gardener. Like it or not, gardeners have become important players in the
Page 33 management of our nation’s wildlife. It is now within the power of individual gardeners to do something that we all dream of doing: to make a difference. In this case, the ‘difference’ will be to the future of biodiversity, to the native plants and animals of North America and the ecosystems that sustain them.” We as individuals can make a difference! Homeowners who landscape with native trees and plants such as oaks, goldenrods, asters, cherry trees, and sunflowers are planting bird food factories that ship caterpillars in bulk, and make regular deliveries of fruits and seeds that help fuel bird migrations over thousands of miles and multiple continents. “The plants in our yards are just as effective as the bird feeder you put up in wintertime,” Tallamy says, “because the plants are making the food that feeds the birds in the summertime.” While cutting-edge research is expanding scientists’ understanding of how people can support birds and other wildlife—one garden, schoolyard, and urban park at a time—there is still a lot to learn. I have excerpted much of this information from The Audubon Society website. https://www.audubon. org/magazine/july-august-2013/ how-create-bird-friendly-yard Please visit to get the whole story.

As we pass the two-and-a-half year mark since Hurricane Sandy, we are reminded of the remarkable progress that has been made, but must not forget that many are still not back to normal. Help is still available and Friends of Rockaway is one of the organizations that are still here to assist those who are still recovering. On the day after Sandy, Friends of Rockaway formed to help bring residents back to their their feet. Friends of Rockaway was founded by a group of Rockaway natives including Michael Sinensky and Evan Abel and has since grown into a well-organized relief effort that operates as an affiliate of the St. Bernard Project. “Friends of Rockaway is a nonprofit construction company. We find people who have fallen through the cracks of traditional disaster recovery, like people who didn’t get enough or any insurance or FEMA money, the elderly, disabled and others who don’t have the means to repair their Sandy damaged home on their own,” Thomas Corley, the
group’s director, said. When FoR receives an inquiry from someone looking for help, they run them through an intake process, verify if they qualify and then FoR provides everything from “tools, to materials to volunteers and construction experts that can help someone get back into a safe, secure home,” he added. FoR asks those who they help to contribute what they can financially, and the group takes care of the rest. They can do everything outside of elevation, like plumbing, electric, heating, flooring, insulation, drywall, painting, roofing and more. “Anything that Sandy could have affected, we’re able to help with,” Corley said. FoR has completed 75 homes since it started, and that doesn’t even include the early day work of mucking and gutting. FoR has undergone some changes since it started. “As needs arose, we adapted to them. Since Sandy, we’ve partnered with the St. Bernard Project in early 2013 and when we formalized that partnership, that’s really when we started recruiting AmeriCorps members Continued on next page

Friends of Rockaway is Here to Help Continued from page 34
and becoming what we are today,” Corley said. Corley is also a new addition. He became director this past December, and brings with him many years of working in disaster areas such as New Orleans, which was hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Joplin, Missouri, which was decimated by an EF5 tornado in 2011. Corley signed up be to an AmeriCorps member in New Orleans, where he spent a year working as a case manager for the St. Bernard Project. When his AmeriCorps work there was complete, he was offered a position in Joplin, where he was a client services and volunteer manager until he became director of the rebuild in Joplin. Corley says he moved to Joplin from Brooklyn in October 2012 and on his first day of work, he was listening to radio coverage of the devastation that was taking place in New York. “ I was listening to NPR and thinking, that’s my backyard,” the Long Island native said. “I can’t believe that’s happening to my community.” He says he had an urge to return to New York to help, but he stuck with his mission in Joplin, finishing up in 2014 after helping rebuild 181 homes there. After his
work was complete, Reese May, Director of East Coast Operations for the St. Bernard Project, asked Corley to help out in Rockaway, and named him the new director of FoR. Having experienced working in two different disaster areas, Corley wants to ensure that the work done in Rockaway, is done right. “Coming up on 10 years since Katrina, there’s still work to do there. New Orleans provides the unfortunate indication of the ineffectiveness of traditional disaster recovery. We can’t be sitting here, seven years from now, coming up on the 10th anniversary of Sandy, and still have friends, family and neighbors still not home,” Corley said. “The Joplin community felt that it was never going to come back. We finished our work there in 2014. Joplin provided a reference point that it doesn’t have to go the way New Orleans did. We can heal a community. Every disaster and community is different, but what’s the same is the sentiment that no one asked for this. No one signed up for three to seven feet of water in their homes. No one asked to be ripped off by contractors. To see the tremendous work done in New Orleans and the work that still exists, and what we’ve done in Joplin, it’s reaffirming that
what we’re trying to do here, has been and will be effective.” The type of work being done in Rockaway has changed for the most part, but FoR has found that some are still in desperate need of initial Sandy repair work, even mucking and gutting. Corley gave an example of a homeowner that paid a contractor $3,000 to muck and gut. The contractor gutted the home and simply put paint over drywall instead of gutting. “When we did an assessment of that home, we found that mold had climbed up the wall and went into the floor, so now the walls and floors need to come out,” Corley explained. He also spoke of a home on Beach 47th street, in which the family used insurance money to pay a contractor that promised to rebuild the entire home. “They’ve been renting an apartment in Brooklyn and couldn’t check on the house every day. Months later, when they were finally able to see it, everything on the inside had to be redone and the contractor walked off with $20,000. We’ve had to gut the house to the bones. Anything you can touch inside, we’re overseeing,” Corley said. In 2013, FoR completed 18 home repairs and 42 in 2014. Their goal for the year is 60 homes, and with
the 15 they’ve completed so far, the 15 they’re working on now, and another 10 homes already lined up for work, it looks like their goal isn’t too far away. Every day, they receive phone calls from people seeing if they qualify for assistance, and they encourage anyone who was impacted by Sandy and who still needs help, to give them a call. “The St. Bernard Project is still working in New Orleans because the community hasn’t healed yet. That’s what Friends of Rockaway will continue to do here. Until the need is met, until the phone stops ringing, until applications stop coming in, we have an obligation to serve these families affected by Sandy,” Corley said.

A Noble Spirit
Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls
Local Grows A Biz In Brooklyn By Michael Leboff
Rockaway native Bridget Firtle knows how to tell a story, but unlike other gifted storytellers, Firtle tells hers with rum. Firtle’s journey really begins at her family home on Beach 132nd Street. In the basement of the house is a bar, and not just any ordinary bar, the Firtle’s basement bar is a former speakeasy, foreshadowing her foray into spirit making. Just like many other craft beer or small batch distillers, Firtle never thought she would enter the liquor business. She graduated with a degree in finance, got her MBA and moved to Manhattan to work on Wall Street. Even there, Firtle couldn’t escape the spirits. Her job had her working within a group of investors who were researching publicly traded companies that sold alcohol, like Anheuser-Busch or Diageo. But it was her research on the changing landscape of craft breweries and distilleries that supplied her with an inevitable epiphany. “I began falling in love with the people behind these stories,” Firtle explained. While still working on Wall Street Firtle began working on a business plan and soon left her position to pursue a new dream, to make a high-quality rum that paid homage to New York City. America’s love affair with rum predates the country itself. Modern rum can trace its roots back to the Caribbean during the 17th century when slaves discovered that molasses could be fermented into an alcoholic beverage. Not long after that, the spirit found its way up to America. “Rum is actually America’s first spirit,” Firtle explained. In order to save money to build her distillery, Firtle moved back in with her parents in Rockaway and in August, 2012 Firtle finished construction and opened The Noble Experiment, a small batch distillery in HOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!
East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Only two months into her new endeavor, Sandy made landfall and slowed the process. Although her new distillery was left unscathed, Firtle’s family home was impacted, but funny enough the bar and its stools were left in good shape. When it came time to crafting her flagship rum, Firtle went back to Rockaway for some inspiration. She decided to name her rum Owney’s NYC Rum, a nod to Rockaway’s most notorious Prohibition-era rumrunner, Owney Madden. Madden was an infamous mobster during prohibition and rose to power as the proprietor of The Cotton Club, one of New York’s most infamous speakeasies. He also had an estate on Rockaway and ran rum from its shores. The rum named in his honor is an unaged white rum that is made with 100% natural, non-GMO molasses. Aside from the top notch molasses, Firtle says there is one other key ingredient, New York’s highly reputable water.“I don’t know if I’m biased but, New York has just about the best water,” she said. The plan with Owney’s NYC Rum was to use all-natural ingredients and let the process do the rest. According to Firtle, other mass produced rums use a lot of artificial colorings and ingredients, something she had no interest in doing. “We wanted to use the best ingredients we can to make a liquor that can hold its own,” Firtle said. The results speak for themselves. Owney’s NYC Rum recently scored a 93 out of 100 in the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, putting it up there with the best spirits in the world. Like her rum, Firtle is also scoring off the charts. In 2013, she was named to Forbes’ ‘30 Under 30 NYC’ list and was also named to Imbibe Magazine’s ‘Imbibe 75 2014’. CALL AHEAD FOR FAST TAKE OUT

Make your own book sling.
Are those magazines and books cluttering your living space? Here is an easy project you can make yourself that will help. Adding a book sling to that unused space under a window or on the back of a door will give you somewhere to store those magazines/books in style. A book sling also makes a great addition to any kids room. All you will need is (2) double rod curtain brackets, (2) ” wood dowel and about 2 yards of fabric to match the location of your book sling. Step 1- Cut the wood dowels to the desired length for your book sling, cut your fabric about 3 inches shorter then your dowels and 16 inches wide. Step 2- Folding the fabric over 2 inches on either side allowing 12 between hems. Step 3- Sew the 2” hems the length of your book sling. Step 4- Mount the 2 curtain brack-
Add the ground beef and chicken, egg, matzo meal and fresh parsley. Mix with a fork or knead with clean hands until all the ingredients are thoroughly blended and meat is evenly seasoned. Uncover the cabbage and reduce the heat to low. Form the meat mixture into 2 inch meatballs and place them in a single layer on the surface of the cabbage. Take care when adding them to the hot pot – don’t burn your arm! Pour remaining tomato sauce into the mixing bowl with the diced tomatoes, lemon juice, sugar and apple sauce. Bring mixture to a simmer and reduce heat to medium low. Cover the pot and cook 75-90 minutes over medium low heat until the meatballs are cooked and cabbage is very tender. Stir every 20-30 minutes. If the cabbage seems dry towards the end of cooking, add a little hot water to the pan. Give the pot a gentle stir at the end of cooking to blend the sauce, cabbage and meatballs. Serve meatballs on top of the cooked cabbage. Garnish with more minced fresh parsley, if desired. Crushed red pepper flakes maybe be added for spice according to take. Serve.
ets (the distance between brackets should be 2” shorter than your dowels). If your brackets are not in line with a beam, use anchors to mount. If your book sling is going to be longer than 36 inches, add a third bracket in the middle. Step 5- Slide the dowels through one of the brackets and through the hems on your fabric, then into the second bracket. We would love to see how your book sling looks when you’re done, take a picture and send it to us at the email address below. Next week’s topic will be cleaning those stubborn grout lines. Backwards Logic There was great anticipation last Wednesday night, twinged with the knowingly and all too common sense of defeat that often comes with how the government is going to deal with our dire situations. From the Parks Dept. to the DOT to the Mayor, it’s never ever turned out the way we want it and need it to be. So there was a little bit of relief when I went through the three “options” for fortifying the Atlantic side of our waterways. At first I was having a good bitch to my buddies about how on earth could they present one study that continues to do nothing but constant sand replenishment and then the next one actually shortening the current jetties
by 100ft. That would make the mean high tide on an astronomical event, like a full moon, potentially burying the jetties altogether. WT…!!?? How do you call that fortifying us? I did finally understand this #2 concept to keep the sand even along the peninsula, but it’s a big gamble, and it’s with our lives and livelihood. Then I moved onto #3 and finally saw the picture as a whole. As you are all likely very aware, Option 3 includes 12 new jetties going east from the 89th Street jetty up to 121st Street. We all know this is what’s been needed for decades but it’s a little disappointing it stops at 121st Street. The ACOE says it will continue to build sand past 121st Street and not create the
giant escarpment we see at 89th Street, that we will have to see, but this isn’t slated for 2018 start so it’s a long way out. Dan Falt did an excellent job presenting and giving clarity to this massive conundrum of fortifying the entire peninsula and also all the other neighborhoods that back onto Jamaica Bay. But what I loved about the logic in presenting the Atlantic Ocean options, it became so apparently obvious you could only pick one that made sense, #3. Make sure you send your comments to Robert.j.smith@usace. army.mil regarding the East Rockaway to Rockaway Inlet & Jamaica Bay Reformulation Study 2015 and I strongly urge you to select Option 3. New Gear: I love technology and when it marries up to one of my other favorite things since I was a 5-year-old, I get very jazzed seeing technology in a watch. No not Apple’s watch, which is pretty lame if they couldn’t make a waterproof version, but two new ones from Rip Curl and Nixon change the game. Rip Curl created a watch with a built-in GPS that can follow your every move in the water, to the point of tracking how fast you’re going and how fast you are in turns. On top of this, it can also track how many waves you catch in a session, not to mention how far you actually paddled and the duration

of your session. Once you sync all this data to your smart phone or the cloud, you can see Google style maps of your session. Nixon have teamed up with Surfline, the world’s leading surfforecasting service to create the Ultratide Watch. The Ultratide features Bluetooth technology to provide you with real-time data, including wave height, swell direction, wind direction and speed, water and air temperatures, a Surfline rating for that break, and custom Surf Alerts. You can even program custom alerts for each spot and the Ultratide will make sure you never miss an epic session again. Trying to figure out if you hit the Dirty Jerz in the a.m. instead of out East? Well the Surfline ratings can help you decide. Too bad this baby doesn’t show you the webcams as well. Happy Surfing! And always PULL IN!!!!

Rockaway Little League Has a Blast At Opening Day Festival Rockaway Little League’s annual Opening Day gala on Saturday, April 25 was a great success. More than 600 people participated. The parade of teams was wellattended, despite the early morning wind. The Challenger Division’s first game of the season was one of the high points. Former MLB pitcher John Halama came in relief of our ace Randy Koenig and tossed two innings to Rockaway’s Challengers. The first Tee Ball games of 2015 were also played. As usual, Field 5 was filled with bouncy rides and slides. Rockaway Little League is grateful for the donations that made food service possible. Curran’s (hamburgers), Belford Provisions (hot dogs), Slices ‘N Ices (pasta), Randy Koenig (chips), the Egan Family (ice), Yacht Club (ice) and Jameson’s (ice) each made generous contributions. Our barbecue team of Marty Hoban, Matt Piccione, Mike McCann, Robbie Rose, Rob Rose, JoJo O’Grady, Sean Wynne, Richie Mills, and John Duggan aced the cooking. After the annual parade of teams, Major Girls softball player Mary Israel started the ceremony with a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem. Marty Andresen addressed the crowd and sang “Take Me
Out To The Ballgame,” per Rockaway Little League tradition. John Duggan threw out the ceremonial first pitch on behalf of himself and Matt Piccione. Everyone at Little League recognized the enormous effort and dedication these gentlemen invest to make our fields the finest in the City. Virginia Donahue and her committee did a tremendous job organizing the raffles for more than two dozen gift baskets. New this year was a contribution by young men from the Scholars Academy baseball team. They ran mini-clinics on Field 5, helping our younger players learn more about the finer points of defense. And, of course, there were baseball and softball games. The onrockaway.com Pirates defeated the Val-Pak of Greater Brooklyn A’s in Major Boys action. The 7-3 victory was highlighted by John Ruoff’s complete game win. The entire Pirates lineup contributed with Billy Reyes (2 doubles) and Daniel Green (1 double) reaching base safely all 3 times up and RBI hits from Harry Charles, James Mangan, John Ruoff, and Nico Allen. Reyes headlined the defense with an outstanding throw from center to Allen at first for an out in the 2nd inning. Nick Ga-
limi, Corey Schwach, Matt Rosenhaus and Justin Zweifler also provided solid play to help the Pirates improve to 2-1 while the A’s fell to 1-2. Jack Casey, Andrew Carr and Anthony Ciapetta drove in runs for the A’s. On Monday, the Servpro Reds beat El Caribe Dodgers 12-3 to stay unbeaten at 4-0. John Mahoney and Sean Richter were stars of game. John pitched two innings and had five RBIs while Sean pitched three scoreless innings. Chris Light, Jack Ryan and Ryan Urciuoli powered the offense. In earlier action, the Minor Boys division had two tightly-played games. The El Caribe Dodgers edged the JAG Tax Prep Rockies 4-3 while the NY Premier Baseball Braves slipped past the Belle Harbor Yacht Club A’s 2-0 The Dodgers victory came during last licks when Jack Conrath rapped a one-out single to plate John Kelly with the winning run. Matthew Steiner and Charlie Smith made great defensive plays through the game in support of pitchers Jack Conrath and Aiden McCormack. John Kelly, Tommy Hickey and Nick Davila had good games at the plate.

Alley Cats Hanging On By a Whisker By Joe Hanna Only one night remains and four teams are still alive for the 2014-15 championship. The First Place “Alley Cats” dropped a 7-0 decision to “Split Personalities” but remain one point ahead of the surging “Spin Doctors” who benefited from a forfeit winning 7-0 over the noshow “Got Balls?” team. Randy Koenig rolled a solid 530 series for the Doctors. The “Alley Cats” and “Spin Doctors” both have visions of a championship as they will square off on May 16, the final night. Joe Hanna’s 208 game and 535 series powered “The Fun Ghouls” to a 5-2 victory over “Split Happens.” Sean Shevlin threw games of 197 and 188 and John O’Connor contributed a 181 game for the Ghouls. Katie Caprio rolled a 172 game for “Split Happens,” preventing the shutout. “Mother Strikers” used Neil Lanzetta’s 226/198/176/600 to take a 7-0 victory over the no-show “The Front Porch Gang” and pull into a third place tie with the Ghouls. Both “The Fun Ghouls” and “Mother Strikers” will be going head to head on the final night with each needing to sweep the three games to have a chance at finishing on top for the season. “Spare Time” was shutout by “Livin’ On A Spare” 7-0. “Winter Bockers,” led by John Conroy’s 229 game and 568 series, won 7-0 over “Porch Time” in a forfeit. Terry Crossan contributed games of 192 and 182 and 545 series for the “Winter Bockers.” “CORP?” was able to

Upsets Happen: Graybeards Lose To Magic Masters The Graybeard roster was severely limited due to ailment called age and the upstarts called the Harlem Magic Masters took full advantage and squeaked out a victory against the undermanned but game Graybeard squad. The annual game is a big hit with families who fill the St. Francis gym to watch the fun-filled action. To the Magic Master the Graybeards say: Dunks for the memories.
