Boardwalk Debut By Katie McFadden

Our boardwalk is here. Well, in part. On Friday, May 22, Mayor de Blasio and several local politicians announced the opening of the beach and brand new boardwalk from Beach 86th to Beach 97th Street. The boardwalk was very active over Memorial Day Weekend, so we asked you what you think. In an informal Facebook survey, the new boardwalk received mixed reviews. Some love it, some hate it, some think it could use a few improvements and some think it needs a new name. After waiting for nearly three years for the return of our boardwalk since it was destroyed by Sandy, many gave their full approval of the new section. “I love it! Is still a work in progress but is coming along great!” Ana Gamboa said. “I like it, I think it looks classy,”

Barbara O’Connor Knott said. “Went there today and I love the new Boardwalk. It’s much wider and cleaner looking,” Harry Vartan said. “I adored it, I’m so pleased the investment to repair and improve Rockaway post Sandy is still going, I am looking to move there in the next two weeks!” Stuart Robinson said. For Sharon Rowland, seeing the new boardwalk was an emotional experience. “We have been waiting over two long years for something to be built. On Saturday before I played paddleball, I took the walk and cried it is so amazing,” she said. In true Rockaway fashion, many also had complaints about the design. Some of the biggest complaints are the wavy lines in the design and not enough access points and seating. “I don’t care for it, I am born and raised here, it no longer feels like Rockaway.

A GREAT PLACE TO BIKE, when permitted. I personally think the grooves in the cement will be problematic for the elderly. I was dizzy, looking at it,” Debbie Winters-Rudden said. “The access points were not planned well. The ramps down to the shore take up

half the beach,” Bruce Belkin said. “I think more access to the slab should have been put into the plan. Also I think the benches could have been better placed instead of clumped

Cable Theft Causes Commuter Nightmare A Train Out; Cross Bay Traffic Snarl

Kevin Boyle PUBLISHER/EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Katie McFadden CONTRIBUTOR Michael Leboff REPORTER Fred Marino Frank Chimera SALES Erika Farrell ART DIRECTOR Richner Printing Services, LLC DESIGN AND LAYOUT The Rockaway Times 114-04 Beach Channel Drive Rockaway Park, NY 11694 Phone: 718-634-3030 s www.rockawaytimes.com s Email: news@rockawaytimes.com

Thousands of Rockaway commuters were forced off the A Train and onto shuttle buses after copper cable thieves vandalized cable from subway tracks near Howard Beach late Tuesday night. This led to delays and crowding along the entire line A line and caused traffic to back up from Broad Channel over the Cross Bay Bridge into Rockaway. The theft was discovered just before 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night after a train lost power north of the Howard Beach station. An MTA crew brought in another train behind it, and the estimated 150 customers on board were able to walk through the trains to get back to the Howard Beach station just after midnight. It is suspected that the 500 feet of power cable was stolen to be sold as scrap. Some signal equipment and track components were also damaged.

The news of the delay didn’t sit well with Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder who lashed out at the MTA. “Families in southern Queens and Rockaway have some of the longest commute times in the entire city. On a normal day, our roads, trains and buses are stretched to capacity. Outages like this have devastating consequences for families simply trying to commute to work or school,” Goldfeder said. “I am alarmed by reported security breaches along the A train and the failure to put in place effective alternative travel plans for our families. I demand a full investigation by the MTA to ensure that this never happens again.” As we were going to print, limited service was being restored but shuttle buses will continue to be used until service fully resumes in Rockaway.

The 1st Annual Rockaway Oyster Festival may be coming this September. The event is being produced by Craic Fest, a premier Irish film and music festival. Details are scarce as they’re still being worked on, but a date has been set for September 19 and the event will be “a day long oyster and beer festival with Irish culture in Rockaway.” There will be Irish music, beer, and oysters, including an oyster-eating contest. Despite not having a set location yet, close to 9,000 people have responded to a Facebook event page for the Oyster Festival. Organizers say they’re trying to get a location set at Beach 116th Street and they’ve requested the help of Councilman Eric Ulrich, who appears to be a big supporter of the idea.

The Big Mo Summer’s here. And things are weird. First off, I’m gonna resist the temptation to declare it over already. That doesn’t happen until the 4th of July. But something strange is going on. Rockaway’s got…hold on….momentum. And more choices than ever, if you want to get off your butt. Of course, staying on your butt is a perfectly good option, too. Though it does depend on where your butt is resting. The new section of the boardwalk is awesome. It points in the direction of more awesomeness because more of it will open soon. That’s momentum. I got on my bike last Saturday and made stops at the Sugar Bowl in Breezy and then at the Riis Park Beach Bazaar. Riis has been underutilized for so long we often forget it’s there. Now concessions and popup vendors and live music make Riis another choice for something to do. Momentum. I couldn’t stay at Riis because there were too many other places calling my name. I stopped at Caracas, the concession on the Boardwalk at Beach 106. It was in full swing. The boardwalk will be attaching itself here soon. Momentum. I took care of my hunger at Tacoway Beach at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club and then had my first frozen of the season at Connolly’s. I made a quick stop at Bungalow Bar and eventually ended at Pico. And then started about thinking about all the places I still had to visit. There are jetskis and stand up paddle boards to try. You can use free kayaks at Riis Landing or go whale watching. Yogis are all over me to give stretching and chanting a try. I’m gonna stretch and chant and hummmmmmmmm…..think about it. Maybe. What else? Well, the list is growing, that’s the point. And a hat tip to those like The Rockaway Theatre Company and Rockaway Artists Alliance who were there at the beginning. Before momentum had a name. They keep

things fresh and are always worth a visit. There are palm trees on 96th Street. A commercial plaza, long dormant, on Beach Channel Drive is now abuzz with Lana’s Loft and The Rockaway Times and other new businesses. Momentum. And here comes 116th Street. The merchant association and new businesses are transforming the street and for those not paying attention, they’re in for a surprise. Surfers are here year round now. As Alex Karinsky, our Tubular Views columnist and president of the Rockaway Beach Surfer’s Association, notes, this cannot be understated as a vehicle of positive change. He grew up in Sydney, Australia. He saw Bondi Beach change from a dump to a world-class destination. Surfers show up and then surf shops. And then the surfers start renting places because they want to be close to the ocean. Momentum. Yeah, construction’s a hassle. And the ferry’s unlikely until 2017. But c’mon. So many houses and buildings are better than ever – a silver lining of Sandy we sometimes forget. And there are dunes and therefore more protection and more is on the way. Momentum. There’s a certain amount of be careful what you wish for. We have long complained that Rockaway is a dumping ground while boasting that it’s New York’s best kept secret. Well, the latter part of that is not so true anymore. There’s too much momentum to keep the place a secret. So you here’s a tip. You have insider information. If you want to invest in Rockaway, now’s the time. It’ll be too late in 2017. The boardwalk will be done. The ferry will be running. Stay ahead of the curve. Rockaway doesn’t have this and it doesn’t have that. But it’s got something it hasn’t had in decades: The Big Mo. Momentum, baby. I don’t know if American Pharaoh is gonna win The Triple Crown but Rockaway is a better bet.

THURSDAY, MAY 28, 2015 Big congrats to local photographer Susannah Ray. Some of her photos from her work, A Further Shore, were published in the New York Times last Sunday. The Rockaway Times touted her work back in December.

Occupational hazards of the news business are typos and ad mistakes. Nothing like making an error for all the world to see. We messed up by using an old Calemine Real Estate ad last week. Our fault, not theirs. Owner Louis Calemine couldn’t have been nicer and more understanding. Our Summer Guide had some minor booboos that make us grimace but it’s spilt milk, what are you gonna do? We had a typo (missing word) in a prominent section of our Sandy Special edition, too. And we still won a New York Press Association Award. As they say on a popular sports talk show, we’ll try to do better the next time. ***** The Daily News reports that a bill making its way through the State Legislature that would offer insurance discounts to homeowners if they take a natural disaster preparedness course. The idea is similar to getting auto insurance discounts for taking

defensive driving courses for reductions in their insurance rates. ***** The boardwalk was declared open by Mayor de Blasio last Friday. Yes, he came here by boat, his personal NYPD ferry. ***** Lots going on this weekend. You can lace them up and play in the 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday (and of course you can watch and enjoy). The fundraiser to help Breast Cancer Awareness and the Crush Clare’s Cancer fund, takes place at the St. Francis schoolyard. An after party is at The Wharf. You can also enjoy the Irish Fest on Saturday and/or Sunday. And you can give blood, too, this Sunday. The Remembering Walter Blum blood drive is also at St. Francis – in the gym on Sunday from 8:30am – 2:30pm. *****

***** There were four more shootings last Sunday, this time in the 101 Precinct. Three people were wounded at a shooting at 415 Beach 47th Street. Later, another person was shot three times at 703 Beach 9th Street. ***** If you haven’t gotten a copy of the Summer Guide we’ll be dropping them off at many locations every week through the 4th of July. And, of course, you can stop by the Rockaway Times booth at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive and pick one up. And you could pick up a Rockaway Times t-shirt for $20 if you like. ***** Longtime basketball coach Marty Andresen (who also heads the Rockaway Little League) was inducted into the CYO Hall of Fame. Well deserved, Marty! ***** Isn’t it great that the mayor made a special announcement that FEMA money for Rockaway is going to be used in Rockaway. *****

Rick Horan, aka Citizen Rick, came to the boardwalk opening with a sign to protest bike restrictions on the boardwalk. He was told to move to a “Free Speech Zone,” a cordoned off area hundreds of feet away. Rick summed up this outrageous policy when he asked, “Do you not see the irony on Memorial Day weekend? People died for free speech.” ***** Speaking of Memorial Day…the parade this year had the biggest turnout, by far, in many years. ***** Don’t forget to list your car for sale, your garage sale and whatever is right for a classified ad right here in The Rockaway Times for the bargain price of $10. Go to our website and fill out the easy form or send an email to Katie@RockawayTimes.com ***** The story by Patricia Hannan last week about Rockaway’s Wedding Cake House was quite the hit online. Many people said they used to call it The Castle. A number of people also said they visited when The Hogan family lived there. ***** Yes, there are cracks in the new boardwalk. That’s what happens when you rush to finish by Memorial Day weekend. But the cracks are fixable. Overall, the boardwalk is spectacular.

A number of groups and individuals – better be careful about naming lest we overlook some – really got the word out about the Memorial Day Parade. The parade had hundreds of marchers and the parade route was lined with people cheering and saluting from Beach 129th to Memorial Circle. After a ceremony, the parade moved on to the Doughboy statue at Beach 94th Street where another crowd awaited.

Marty Makes The Hall Of Fame By Michael Leboff

This past week, longtime CYO basketball coach and Rockaway Little League President Marty Andresen was inducted into the Diocese of Brooklyn’s CYO Hall of Fame. Andresen’s foray into coaching began in humble fashion more than four decades ago. He was skimming through the St. Francis de Sales weekly bulletin when he came across an ad looking for help with the parish’s CYO boys’ basketball team. That was in 1973. Now, some 42 years later Andresen is still at it and then some. Not only does Andresen still coach 5th grade basketball, but he also is in the middle of his 37th year as the head of Rockaway Little League. Andresen’s impact on the community is so profound that it has crossed onto the sidelines. “I’ve coached half the [current] coaches,” Andresen said of his long tenure as a youth sports advocate. When Andresen started coaching in 1973, Rockaway Little League was made up of 250 boys and girls and they played in Riis Park. In 1978 Andresen took over as the league’s president and just three years later 900 kids were playing in the RLL. Despite the

league’s terrific growth, Andresen remained humble. “If I had a little something to do with the league’s growth, then that’s great,” the former Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade Deputy Grand Marshal said. Andresen has won a few awards in his career, including six Brooklyn/Queens CYO Championships, but still remains steadfast in his commitment to fair play and competing the right way. “It was always more important for the kids to improve and learn,” he said.

3rd Annual Irish Festival this Weekend Get ready to do a jig, spend some green and enjoy the craic. The 3rd Annual Rockaway Beach/ Breezy Point Irish Festival is this weekend. On Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31, the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 21 is hosting a weekend of Irish culture with a full lineup of bands, vendors, food, beer and fun for the kids in the parking lot of St. Camillus at Beach 100th Street and Shore Front Parkway. Picking up on a Rockaway tradition that lasted for 17 years on Beach 108/109th Streets, the AOH brought the Irish Festival back to the community in 2013. “We do this to celebrate the heritage and culture. We live in a great community, one of the largest Irish communities in the United States,” chairperson John Manning said. “Years ago the organizers used to do it on 108th Street. We understand they did their best and it was held for many years. With all of the work the Hibernians do, we wanted to put our heads together and work as a team, following our motto of Unity, Friendship and Christian Charity, and we thought we could pull it off.” Pull it off, they have. The Irish

Festival has been a growing tradition with great success. The festival, which benefits local churches and other organizations, has allowed the AOH to raise and donate more than $80,000 over the past two years. “My goal is that we raise enough to bring us over the $100,000 mark this year,” Manning said. The AOH will discuss where the money raised from this year’s festival will go after the event. Admission is $10 at the gate and free for kids ages 12 and under. The festival will go from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. both days, with an opening Mass at St. Camillus Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30. As we go to press, an exact schedule has not been released, but music starts at noon and this year’s bands include Shilelagh Law, Boston’s Erin Og, McLean Avenue Band, Jameson’s Revenge, the Narrowbacks, Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones, Susan and Gerard Band and the Cunningham Brothers. “People shouldn’t come for just one band, they should come for all of them,” Manning said. Shilelagh Law, a highly anticipated band each year, will play at 6 p.m. on Saturday night and they’ve been readying themselves for the occasion. “In years past, Shilelagh

Law was going to the East Durham Irish Festival. They’re saving themselves for Rockaway,” Manning said. “They wanted to cut a weekend out of their schedule and they cut East Durham last weekend.” An Irish Festival wouldn’t be complete without bagpipes and Irish dancing. There will also be performances by the O’Malley School of Irish Dance, the Breezy Point Catholic Club Pipes and Drums and an AOH bagpipe band. There will be plenty for the kids

to do with rides, face paint, snow cones and more. The event will also be full of vendors selling Irish goods and food liked corned beef sandwiches and more provided by Dalton’s Seaside Grill. “We want to try to keep it on a community level, so we wanted a local establishment like Dalton’s to provide the food this year,” Manning said. Dalton’s will also be bringing their brand new Shore Shack food truck to the party.

Superstorm Sandy Flood Claims After Sandy damaged my home in Rockaway, my law firm began fighting for Sandy victims underpaid by flood insurance. We joined forces with Gauthier Houghtaling & Williams, the law firm that recovered millions for homeowners after Hurricane Katrina. Our team has recovered more for Sandy victims than any other law firm.

FEMA sent letters to 144,000 people saying: • you can re‐open your flood insurance claim • you don’t need a lawyer What FEMA won’t say: • you were cheated the first time because you didn’t have a lawyer FEMA said every one of our clients was not entitled to more money. After we uncovered fraud, FEMA agreed to pay full policy limits (up to $250,000) to hundreds of our clients.

As 60 Minutes reported, our team proved flood claims were underpaid using falsified reports. Thousands of homeowners are still owed up to $250,000 on their flood claims. THE WAVE, ROCKAWAY BEACH, N.Y., FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2015 - Page 32

Getting the Grit Out of My Gears By Rick Horan I’d like to thank the folks who have contributed some great ideas to this column over the past month. Now it’s my turn again. Rather than focus on one topic, here’s a quick mind-dump on a few… Half-assed Street Repairs Have you noticed scores of improperly repaired trenches crisscrossing our neighborhood? DOT says they are the result of “utility cuts” and recommends we call 311 to report them. Wait a minute, isn’t that their job? My Idea? Properly repair the streets in a timely fashion or face a fine. Disintegrating Streets I’m not just talking about potholes, but entire streets that are falling apart. Who’s responsible for the quality of the materials or

the workmanship? We are paying top dollar for lousy roads that are always under construction. It is unsafe, wrecking our cars and slowing us down. My Idea? An independent DOT auditor to insure we get what we are paying for. “Traffic Calming” DOT’s policy of eliminating lanes to reduce speeding is like reducing the size of ports to raise the price of freight. Yes, it might work, but at what cost? Every major road in Rockaway has been the victim of this failed policy. At the very time Rockaway is growing, our valuable infrastructure has less capacity and is in worse shape than it has been in decades. My idea? Stop the madness and put back every lane that has been taken away from us. A Transparent DOT Last year I asked DOT for speed

“For My House Will Be Called A House Of Prayer For All People”

and red light camera revenue figures in Rockaway. “Sorry, we can’t give you that information. You need to use the Freedom of Information Law.” So I filed the FOIL form and subsequently received three “we’re working on it” letters. Finally, nine months later, I got the final letter, “no information available.” Another example is the traffic studies that are used to make decisions about our roads. If you ask DOT for a copy they refuse. Now I am FOILing the studies that justified the two new traffic lights on Beach 102nd St. I’m not holding my breath. My Idea: The DOT works for us not the other way around. Every penny they spend or collect and every study they undertake is our business and should be available to everyone, anytime through their website. QueensRail My idea: Build it! Select Bus Service (SBS) My Idea: If it means losing a lane in each direction and spending over $200 million, shelve it. East River Bridge Tolls and Congestion Pricing My Idea: Figure out another way to fund mass transit. Motorists are already paying more then their fair share. Decimated Rockaway Freeway This boondoggle is the subject of a future article. My Idea: Fix

F R OZ E N D R

it and open it up to traffic until the rest of it is permanently demapped. Vision Zero 25 MPH, etc. Political grandstanding that will cost the City time and money while pretending to save lives. My Idea: Elect a mayor who understands how to keep a City safe and moving at the same time. Protect Kids Not Revenue Rockaway’s speed camera is at Beach 106th St. and Beach Channel Drive, two full blocks before Scholars Academy. There are no signs warning drivers they are approaching a school. This proves that the mayor and DOT care more about generating cash then protecting children. My Idea: Require DOT to alert motorists of a school before the placement of any speed cameras. Stupid Lights (stopping for nothing) There are thousands of them around the city. We stop at them all the time. They cause pollution, accidents and are a significant waste of time, money and energy. My Idea: We need to upgrade our dumb lights to smart or actuated lights at most intersections. Got an idea to improve transportation in the City or Rockaways? Send your 500 word article to RickHoran@SmarterStreets.org.

Channel Drive Service: Celebrating 65 Years By Sarah Boyle A visit to Channel Drive Service Station will reveal the truth behind their motto “Friendly, Honest, Experienced.” “Experienced” is certainly an understatement as more than six decades in business will attest. The service station’s long and successful history in Rockaway proves they have lived up to the “friendly” and “honest” part of their motto as well. Although current owner, Brad Goodman, has “only” been with the company for 35 years, Channel Drive Service Station is a Rockaway native. The company’s roots date back to 1949, when Rockaway residents, and WWII veterans, Jack Jaffe and Louis

Cappell founded the service station. Brad Goodman inherited the company from his uncle. He began to work full time in 1977, and now runs the complete auto repair shop, which includes a full service car wash. “I have made it my priority to stay in touch with the latest diagnostic techniques and emission drivability repairs,” says Goodman. The company is located in the up and coming neighborhood of Arverne, at 59-14 Beach Channel Drive. Goodman feels that, new facilities such as a world-class YMCA, has brought a more united feeling to the neighborhood, bringing in people from both ends of the peninsula. Goodman says “I feel better about

coming to work than I did twenty years ago.” Pride in their employees has largely led to Channel Drive’s Success. Multiple testimonials to the quality of the workmanship, can be found on the company’s website, www.channeldriveservice.com. The attitude instilled in employees is to deliver only the highest customer service, and it has proven quite effective. “I recommend it as one of the best auto repair shops in Far Rockaway” says Myrna N. of Arverne, NY in her review. The customer clearly comes first at Channel Drive Service Station, where their objective is to complete

each job efficiently and to treat customers with respect. Upon entering the station, customers are greeted by one of the cordial service writers at the counter, who are there to immediately address any concerns. A diagnostic process is performed, and a fair estimate provided. “Nobody leaves unhappy,” says Brad Goodman. However, as the saying goes, “Remember, with great power, comes great responsibility.” And with Channel Drive’s growing success, has also come growing challenges. Goodman notes that he hasn’t experienced many unusual challenges in the business, but his most difficult Continued on page 33

Guide: A Hit With A Miss Dear Editor: First off, let me congratulate you on a wonderful and highly informative inaugural summer guide. As a 40 plus year Rockaway resident, even I found it an interesting and enjoyable read. However, when I read your listing of schools in the area, I was disappointed that the Waterside grade and middle schools (PS317 and MS318, respectively) were not listed. For one, they are located in the very school district where your offices reside, and secondly, if you want to talk Rockaway revival, nothing compares to what Ms. Dana Gerendasi, the principal of PS317, has done with the Waterside Studio School. Besides the three R’s, every child from pre-K to 5th grade attends art, dance, music and drama classes EVERY week. My daughter has attended this school for five years now, starting in pre-K, and I’ll admit, I was a little apprehensive about sending her there with the stigma that PS 225 had in the past. However, not a

day goes by when I don’t think my wife and I made the right decision in sending our daughter to Waterside. My younger daughter will be attending their pre- K in the fall. Again, kudos on and excellent guide and publication. I just needed to clear up this discrepancy. Kevin Sautner

Inspired By Mighty Mikey Dear Editor: (In response to the Mighty Mike piece by Katie McFadden) : Mikey, We never met but I want to let you know how much you have inspired me and so many others. Your story touched me in many ways. You are extremely strong and the toughest fighter. Reading up on you every day made me push even harder in my life. Whether I was pushing to make myself healthier for my daughter or pushing myself to grow in my career but especially pushing me to realize that life is short and we need to have as much fun as possible.

Seeing all of your pictures with your beautiful smile brightened my day. From your stories that your mom posted you can tell that you made the best out of every moment that you had. You will be missed by so many. Even though we’ve never met... you’ve touched my heart forever. Be at peace Mighty Mikey. Janine Morrissey

Saluting Mighty Mikey Dear Editor: (In response to the Mighty Mike piece by Katie McFadden): I was one of your prayer warriors....one among many. I followed your story through your mom’s posting. I fell in love with you because you became everyone’s child. I ached that you were in pain and am now filled with peace that you are at peace. I will always pray for your family and hope that their pain becomes manageable although I know that will not happen for a long time. Keep leaving your signs of love

to your family.

Remembering Brian Monaghan Dear Editor: I met Brian back in 2007 as I booked him for a number of gigs for a bar/restaurant I was involved with! We instantly became friends as we learned we knew so many of the same people. I had a text exchange with Brian last Saturday where I was asking his availability to play at my niece’s graduation party. His IMMEDIATE response was “I already have a gig planned that I do all the time, I’ll get someone to cover for me and do your niece’s party.” And that’s the kind of friend he was... nothing against his previous commitment, but he always told me he wanted to introduce himself to new people as well as exposing his musical friends to his audience! Sands Point Physical Therapy Bike Ban Must Be Undone There will be a protest. With all the excitement and anticipation of the boardwalk opening came some ridiculous news: bicycles are not allowed on the boardwalk on weekends. This is so wrong. Like the boogie board ban they tried last year, this prohibition must end. The Parks Department should get real now. Plenty of locals work all week and the only chance to get on their bikes for a ride is on the weekend. The message to them: too bad. Once again, we have to point to Long Beach (you know the place that got their boardwalk years before we did). They allow bike riding in a bike lane. When craft fairs or other events are held on their boardwalk they post signs telling bike riders to dismount until they pass the crowd. The same can be done here. Bike riders can dismount at bottlenecks at the concessions. And then get back on for what should be a beautiful ride. Oh, the reason there is a bottleneck at the concessions is because the boardwalk islands were apparently designed without consideration of bike riders. When that flaw was pointed out a couple of years ago, a Parks official said, “Oops.” The Brooklyn Bridge handles a lot more pedestrian and bicycle traffic than the boardwalk in a far narrower space. And the bridge has slopes that allow bikes to hit high speeds. The world carries on just fine. Riis Park has no restrictions on bikes and pedestrians are not cowering in fear. Nor are people cowering in fear from Beach 60th all the way to Beach 9th Street where you can ride your bike whenever you want. Yes, Parks is selectively enforcing the ban. You can ride freely on one end of the boardwalk but not on the new section. And there are other mixed signals, too. Parks encourages vendors to rent bikes while neglecting to tell them that they can’t do so on the week-

ends. Off the boardwalk, on Shore Front Parkway, a bike and pedestrian lane exists (created by Parks) which is far more dangerous than the boardwalk. Big cracks in the street and mounds of sand have to be maneuvered around. Still, pedestrians and cyclists co-exist. Even on weekends. Simply, the boardwalk is made for pedestrians and bicyclists alike. If people are reckless with bikes, issue them tickets. If they don’t dismount in crowded areas, issue them tickets. That’s the kind of enforcement needed. You don’t outlaw cars because accidents happen. You don’t banish bikes because some people are reckless. There will be a protest. A lot of people want to ride their bikes on the new boardwalks and they won’t take no for an answer. We hopes Parks comes to its senses. Let riders ride.

tive comments I can make about Brian, however the gentleman (John Sica) who wrote this article eloquently hit every attribute Brian possessed! You will surely be missed my friend! Your Pal, Murph Dear Editor: (Re: Remembering Brian Monaghan by Katie McFadden) Thank You for your excellent article on Bri. We started playing tennis rackets as if they were guitars in my basement and at his house in Bay Ridge at 11 years old and stared at the guitars in Guitar City until we both had our own. We went different ways and would occasionally get to play together. One memorable time was in Honor of Moira Smith at the 74th Street Block Party in 2002. RIP Pal until the next time. a slush fund for mismanagement by EDC! It can and should go toward some of the ideas the Army Corps has proposed for our beach as part of the Rockaway Reformulation study. Particularly Alternative 3. If you have time, please write an email to Robert J Smith at Robert.j.smith@usace.army.mil. Let him know that the Army Corps should implement Alternative 3 of the Rockaway Reformulation study and they should utilize the extra $200 million that was awarded to NYC from FEMA to build groins and to include the beaches all the way to Beach 169th. I happened to notice a glaring oversight at the Parks Rockaway Beach opening ceremony! There was lots of praise being going around to many of the electeds and deservedly so! I was a bit disappointed that Congressman Gregory Meeks was not mentioned a lot more. I recall his passionate plea on the floor of the House of Representatives demanding immediate funding for our peninsula. His plea to his fellow congressmen and congresswomen was to “WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES.” To get see firsthand, the devastation we were living. That plea resulted in the Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer touring every inch of our peninsula. Congressman Hoyer’s tour, without a doubt, helped move Congress to finally act and provide the funding we have today. Thanks Congressman Meeks for all you have done! While you’re reading this and since you did such a good job getting U.S. funding: Congressman Meeks, can you repeal the BiggertWaters Act? Come on, I had to ask!

In spring 2013, NYC Parks announced their estimate for the cost to rebuild our Rockaway Beach boardwalk. That figure was in the area of $270 million. That is the amount The City of New York, in turn, requested from FEMA to cover the cost of the rebuild of our boardwalk. In September of 2013 an email from NYC Parks Commissioner Silver, to Mayor de Blasio was leaked to the media about concerns of a “political liability,” that NYC may be awarded an additional 200 million dollars from FEMA, on top the 270 million dollars originally requested. During the past several months it has been announced that FEMA has in fact awarded NYC the amount that NYC requested to rebuild our boardwalk, 270 million dollars, and yes FEMA also added in the additional 200 million. What needs to be pointed out is FEMA has made it abundantly clear that the additional 200 million dollars is in fact for resiliency measures. At the onset of planning the design of our new boardwalk, we were told time and time again that we could not incorporate a sea wall into the boardwalk. We were told that if we did, it would negate any plans by the Army Corps of Engineers. We were told by Parks and EDC that our “Boardwalk is not Protection.” That protection will come from Army Corps! Well fast forward to this past Friday’s beach opening day, Mayor de Blasio came out and told us that he found the Rockaway peninsula’s wallet and is happy to announce that not only is he giving us our wallet he is giving us the $480 million that is in it. He announced that any leftover money would be spent in Rockaway. Really?!?? Well what else could he have said? Here’s $200 million I’m spending the rest in Prospect Park? That extra 200 million dollars is for Resiliency, not

Charlie Celebrity: Rockaway’s Youngest Activist By Katie McFadden When he’s not busy surfing, drawing, playing legos, video games or watching Star Wars, 10-year-old Charlie Ciliberti is getting into heated debates with top politicians. The St. Camillus Catholic Academy 5th grader and young entrepreneur may be Rockaway’s youngest activist. When Mayor de Blasio came to town for the beach and boardwalk opening last weekend, Ciliberti gave him a piece of his mind. After the press conference, the 10-yearold chased down the mayor. As the 6’5 de Blasio leaned down to hear the little boy, Ciliberti surprised him by asking about controversial subjects like the NYPD, the ferry, and what will be done with the leftover $480 million in FEMA money once the boardwalk is complete. “I asked if we could get more cops and if we could use the leftover funds for the ferry,” Ciliberti said. “For the cops question, he said that he’s working on it but we already have a lot of cops that are doing a great job, and for the ferry, he said we’re gonna decide as a town what to do with the leftover funds for the boardwalk.” The mayor’s response was not acceptable enough to the Rockaway Beach resident, who says he often hears gunshots from his home and he misses the ferry ride. “I was not happy with his answers at all. He said we might get a ferry in 2017. I asked him why so long, and he said ‘I can’t believe I’m getting into a political debate with a 10-yearold,’” Ciliberti recalled. The mayor appreciated the young activist’s enthusiasm, and turned to Senator Joseph Addabbo and Councilman Eric Ulrich and said, “you better

watch out for your jobs.” Young Ciliberti only spoke to the mayor briefly, but says he’s going to keep on him. “I asked him for his phone number and he tried to get a business card but he couldn’t find one, so his secretary pulled it out and gave it to me. I said maybe we can do lunch sometime. She suggested we go to a baseball game, but he’s a Mets fan, so I don’t think that’s happening anytime soon,” the young Yankee fan said. “I think the mayor is a good person, but he just makes mistakes. A whole lot of mistakes,” Ciliberti said. “But he was very respectful when I spoke to him.” The youngster particularly enjoyed de Blasio’s hint that he should become a senator. “I love politics,” he said. “There’s nothing better than getting your point proved in an argument.” De Blasio may not be his favorite politician, but Ciliberti is a fan of some local electeds. “I like Phil Goldfeder, but if I say he’s my favorite, Ulrich might get jealous.” After his encounter with the mayor on Friday, Ciliberti decided to continue to fight for Rockaway by attending a Parks Department hearing at City Hall on Tuesday morning with his mother, Mary Ellen Keller-Ciliberti and John Cori, of Friends of Rockaway Beach. “The Parks Department commissioner and deputy commissioner were there. I wanted to ask them if they were gonna rebuild the parks that were destroyed during Hurricane Sandy, but I didn’t get to ask them because only the councilman was allowed to talk to Parks,” Ciliberti said. He did get to meet Deputy Commissioner Liam Kavanagh briefly, who asked the boy what he thought about the new boardwalk. “I said it’s okay, except for the cracks. He said they’re gonna fill the cracks up,” Ciliberti recalled. In between his political activism last week, the busy little boy also launched a new business over the weekend. With the help of his dad, also named Charlie Ciliberti, and his 15-year-old brother, Frankie, Charlie set up a homemade stand in a prime location. Choo Choo Charlie’s opened by the Beach 90th Street subway entrance on Sunday and made a big debut. Charlie and Frankie sold soda, water, chips and homemade lemonade to those coming and going from the train. “I made $100, but $50 went toward paying everything off,” Ciliberti said. “I met a lot of nice Continued on page 27

Riis Park Bazaar Off To Great Start By Michael Leboff

Rockaway boasts plenty of places with splendid vistas, having the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Jamaica Bay on the other make the peninsula a place where people can stop and take it all in. Terence McNicholas opened the Fisherman’s Dog, a food truck that hugs the westbound side of Beach Channel Drive, in August of 2012 partly because he knew that the vacant lot he operates out of features one of Rockaway’s signature overlooks. McNicholas, who’s father owns the lot where the truck dishes out food, said the lot was vacant for over a year when he had the idea for a food truck. “We wanted to do something unique with the lot,” McNicholas said. “I saw this opportunity pop up and I didn’t want somebody else to grab it.” In addition to the view, The Fisherman’s Dog features a unique setup that includes an enclosed outdoor seating area fit with multiple picnic tables. Occasionally the truck will host events or live music in the seating area. In lieu of walls or a fence the dining space is enclosed by another truck and McNicholas’ AirStream. “I’ve always wanted one,” McNicholas said of his trailer. “It’s like an office and a hangout.” Despite its growth each year, it wasn’t always smooth sailing for The Fisherman’s Dog. McNicholas said the first year wasn’t easy as the truck was unbranded and hadn’t had the opportunity to establish its presence in the community. Things didn’t get any easier for McNicholas as just a few months after opening up shop Hurricane Sandy

made landfall. At the time of opening the truck McNicholas was working in sales for Sixpoint Brewery and credits his time at the Brooklyn based beer company as part of his inspiration. He says that a lot of his time with the brewery was spent working over menus to best pair their beer with. Every season the menu at The Fisherman’s Dog has evolved and today it features a variety of food from traditional food truck fare such as hot dogs or tacos to more complex food like cooked ceviche. McNicholas and his chef aren’t afraid to experiment with their menu and see what sticks. “We play with things and see if they fit on the menu,” McNicholas explained. “When I was working with the brewery, chefs we were working with would show me how they made certain things and I thought ‘that’s awesome that they get to play around with food for a living.” In the three years it has been open the food truck’s reputation and following has grown each year and McNicholas says he has bigger plans for the truck, which he finances out of his own pocket. “We get a lot of people who are just down for the day,” McNicholas said of his crowd. “But we also get a lot of locals who know we’ve put out a great product for three years.” The Fisherman’s Dog food truck is permanently parked across the street from the Waldbaum’s lot (and just a newspaper toss away from The Rockaway Times office) on Beach Channel Drive. It is open 7 days a week from now until the weather turns toward winter.

Dishing With The Fisherman’s Dog

The Riis Park Beach Bazaar made its much anticipated debut this past weekend and if early returns are any indication it may become a Rockaway summer staple. The Bazaar, which featured vendors from all over New York City, attracted locals and visitors alike. They were treated to a day full of music, shopping, and eating at Bay 9 in Riis Park. “I think it was a really good opening weekend,” Belvy Klein said. “We got a great response from the locals, a lot of people from Brooklyn and the City, and the bands were stoked.” Klein, who is one of the founders of the Bazaar was happy to see his hard work pay off. “It was a hell of a lot of work getting everything up & going on time, but our staff really came through and were champs.” In addition to the happy patrons, the vendors were also happy to introduce their fare to a new market. Amy Ercolani, who is a manager at Ample Hills Creamery in Brooklyn, was thrilled with the turnout at opening weekend. Ample Hills is one of the holdovers from the Brooklyn Night Bazaar, which coincidentally went on a venue-seeking hiatus last weekend. Ercolani said she is excited

to introduce Ample Hills to a different crowd and is ready for the change of pace. “We are excited to be serving the families of Rockaway,” Ercolani said. In addition to Ample Hills other food vendors were busy serving long lines of patrons throughout the afternoon. One of the biggest hits on opening weekend was The Brooklyn Star and their signature fried chicken in a waffle cone. “The vendors were ecstatic and got overwhelmingly positive reviews from the crowd,” Klein said. Although The Rockaway Times went to press Wednesday evening it was expected that a large round of locals were going to test out the new venue. The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League plays at Riis on Wednesdays and signs offering RBVL discounts were visible over the opening weekend. The Riis Park Beach Bazaar is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. This weekend the Bazaar will continue its summer music series with two concerts. On Saturday Iron Chic will be headlining and Laura Stevenson will headline the show on Sunday. To see the Riis Park Beach Bazaar’s full calendar visit http://riisparkbeachbazaar.com/calendar.

people and I got a lot of money. Some of those people were George Washingtons and Abe Lincolns,” he joked. Some customers were more supportive than others. “The hipsters said they spent all their money at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. But they were still able to afford their MetroCard fee. They said I need to take credit cards. Some people just handed us money and didn’t want anything,” he said. Ciliberti expects business to be even better this weekend. His brother, Frankie, will be sharing the spot and the two will sell ices and snowcones at Frankie’s Frozens. “This weekend, it’s gonna be all profit,” Ciliberti said. They’ll be out Saturday and Sunday afternoon from about 2 to 6 pm and

have plans to open throughout the summer. Where will all of the money they make go? “We’re gonna donate some to our block to buy everybody flags to put on their house and the rest we’re gonna keep,” Ciliberti said. In between battling electeds and managing business, little Charlie also found time to march in a Memorial Day Parade this weekend. “This must have been the busiest weekend of my life,” he said. Despite his busy schedule, Ciliberti practices time management by making sure his homework is done early. “I’m not usually a busy man on the weekends, so I just found time to do everything. I do my homework on Friday so I can have fun on the weekends,” he said.

CHARLIE giving the Mayor an earful.

Ciliberti says he’ll stay on top of business this summer and will also take advantage of some free time when school is over. “I started this business because I need something to keep me busy and I was running out of money. I’ll probably do it all summer, maybe even on the weekdays. In the summer, I usually just lose track of the days anyway,” he said. He’ll also make time for some of his favorite activities like swimming, surfing, exploring the mountains upstate, going to the aquarium with his parents and volunteering with the St. Camillus Special Olympics program. Ciliberti’s parents are very supportive of their little boy’s endeavors. “He’s a great kid. He’s having fun, being good, listening, making money and getting involved. He’s trying to get parks back in Rockaway, which is great,” Charlie Ciliberti Sr. said. “People think I tell him to say the things he says, but he does it on his own. He’s just funny.” Ciliberti’s stint with the mayor has made him a little celebrity, with video making it to the Wall Street Journal website and his snack stand making it to Facebook. “It feels great because I finally feel like I’m doing something great,” the little boy said of his newfound

CHARLIE is also an entrepreneur. fame. “A bunch of people say ‘hi, Choo-Choo Charlie!’ It’s just really cool. I feel like I accomplished more than most 10 year olds in a weekend. It’s fun, fun times.” Ciliberti says he’ll keep up the good fight for Rockaway. He’s also been active in bridge toll and ferry rallies, police support events at the 100th Precinct, beach and block cleanups and his work isn’t done. “Rockaway is just a small town that needs love,” he said. “All I want is a better Rockaway.”

Boardwalk Debut Continued from page 3 together in tight groups as they are now. The old boardwalk had benches placed along the whole stretch. I am sure that is an easy to fix. Also more staircases can also be added if the issue was raised,” Rob Romas said. Many are also not happy with the rules being enforced like no bike riding on weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and no dogs allowed. “We were told we could only walk our bikes on the weekend and the no dogs is also very disappointing. Lots of rules for laid back Rockaway,” Connie Sommerville said. Some had mixed feelings, but made some suggestions on how it can be improved. “It just needs some finishing touches like the new lighting (these ones are temporary) and some more plants or dunes on the north side. Also the grand entrance needs more plants - it’s too concretey,” Mika Milanowski said. “What the boardwalk needs more than ANYTHING is shaded areas (preferably seating) to accommodate our large elderly population,” Palma Genovese said. “I would put lights on the rails like solar lights, that would look awesome at night,” Joanie Hess suggested. “I went biking and thought it would be nice to have something like the “big clock” in Riis Park, on 94th street,” Eileen Reen Anderson said. Now made of concrete, the old wood design will be missed by many, but after seeing pieces of wooden boardwalk in backyards, some are accepting of the concrete. “I do like the design and I love that it’s concrete. That’s smart in case Superstorm Sandy decides to comeback and ruin all of our lives all over again,” Bianca

Veronica said. “I think its fitting for a modern beach environment on the mend as well as preventative in the event of any unforeseen storms ahead. The old boardwalk was terrible. The rails looked like beat up street light piles from 1970. The wood was so old, I still have splinters imbedded in my feet from four years ago,” Thomas Brookins said. Some suggested that the new boardwalk needs a new name, since there are no more wood boards. Among the suggestions were promenade, Sea Walk, Ocean Walk, Beachwalk or “Splinter-Free Walk,” said Marie Trentini Patterson. To others, it will always be affectionately known as the boardwalk. “I prefer nostalgia and ‘boardwalk’ fits the bill. When younger folks later ask “why boardwalk?” they can be told of the Rockaway history, what was and why it is,” John J. O’Grady said. “It will always be called the boardwalk no matter what the new material is,” Colleen Brady said. The new span of boardwalk is a teaser to some and many can’t wait to see what’s next. Phase 2 of the boardwalk, from Beach 97th to Beach 107th Street, will be complete by July 4th. The full boardwalk will be continuous by Memorial Day 2016 and the whole project will be complete by 2017. Seeing how hard Skanska worked in the days before last weekend’s opening, some say the long wait is unnecessary. Helen Perlitz Lee said, “I just wish they would have worked as hard as they did these past two weeks, the whole time. We’d be finished with the whole beach walk by now!”

Schumer: ‘WYO’ Model Must Go sell policies. While the WYOs are subject to NFIP’s rules and regulations, Schumer explained that often times the companies are servicing flood insurance claims with the same profit-driven mentality as they would have for their other lines of business, and as a result unfairly reducing payments to homeowners. Schumer pointed to the months-long investigation aired by ‘60 Minutes’ which brought to light evidence that private engineering companies altered engineering reports so as to not fully reflect the true impact and dam-

age caused by Sandy to New York homes, leading to the unjust denial or underpayment of flood insurance claims. These engineering firms were contracted by WYO flood insurance companies. Schumer said that the widespread fraud regarding legitimate flood insurance claims handled by WYO insurance companies following Sandy highlights major flaws with the WYO program. In a letter to FEMA, Schumer called to eliminate the WYO flood insurance model entirely. Schumer said that FEMA does not need to wait for

a magnifier did reveal two men in white uniforms exiting the bungalow carrying an empty stretcher with a folded blanket on it. It is apparent that someone had been returned to the domicile after an illness, accident or near drowning. There was a White Cross Hospital at the Point Colony in these early days. Perhaps the uniformed men were Ambulance Personnel from that facility. (Next week’s issue will have mystery photo #2).

Congressional action in order to make these changes. “Even with a system like NFIP flood insurance --- paid for you by the taxpayer --the bottom line is that the standard M.O. of ‘write your owns’ is still insurance company 101: deny-denydeny and lowball the policy holder, rather than a victim-centered system focused on promptly paying devastated disaster victims so they can get back in their homes and resume normal lives. The only way to change this unacceptable culture is to scrap it,” Schumer said.

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer has urged the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to scrap the decades-old Write-YourOwn (WYO) insurance model from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and move forward to overhaul the process entirely so that flood insurance policyholders in New York and across the country are benefited in the future. The WYO model has been in place since 1983 and allows participating insurance companies to write and service policies in their own names. There are currently over 80 different companies that

Memorial day weekend has always been known for barbecuing, so what better time of year to think about maintaining your grill? With proper maintenance your grill will give you lots of fun and safe barbecues. The three main steps to maintaining your grill are general maintenance, annual maintenance and safety.

Now lets take care of the general maintenance: 1- To help prevent food from sticking, lightly coat the grill with peanut oil before starting up the grill. 2- After cooking, scrub the grill using a grill brush while it is still warm. 3- After your grill cools, wipe up any spills to prevent corrosion. 4- Keep your grill covered with a proper grill cover when storing.

By Rebekkah Thompson As I think about how our community is shaping post Hurricane Sandy, how we understand and interact with the land and community for generations to come will be critical to how we sustain as a renewed and resilient Rockaway. If I expect my children to clean up after themselves, respect and show compassion for the elderly, obey city law enforcement, or care for their neighborhood by not littering, I must teach by example. The “Do what I say, not what I do” motto only goes so far, and sometimes goes nowhere. Learn to Love the Land. It isn’t always easy to get across to young people the importance of the land and its relation to community in a fast food, fast paced, touch screen, instant, and microwavable culture. While it’s easier and faster for me to garden without having to supervise my children, they will never get the

• Square Foot Gardening. We did this with a small group of neighborhood children. Each child designed their own square foot garden according to what seeds they chose (vegetable or flower seeds). For example, within one square foot, a child planted four lettuce seeds, another planted four flower seeds at each corner of a square and another child planted eight basil plants within a square. Mel Bartholomew has a very easy to follow book titled “All New Square Foot Gardening.” You can also search on www.gardeningchannel.com Cultivating a Generation Engaged in the Community. What does my engagement with my community say to my children or the next generation of Rockaway residents and leaders? It is pretty clear that Rockaway is undergoing a quick transformation. Each summer there seems to be a new business, new structure, new event and many new faces. (And there are still plans currently in development.) Change is not always received with favor, at least, initially. Nonetheless, as a resident raising a family, whether I have a direct influence or not on these changes, I have a responsibility and right to be a part of change and take ownership. I am not trying to incite some angry or disapproving opinion about Rockaway change or start a “hipsters vs. locals” debate. That is negative, wasteful, fruitless and ineffective. I am saying that community resiliency and sustainability is a lot simpler and already in progress (for quite some time).

The Rockaway Times

• So many borderlines made on such a small strip of land – Belle Harbor, Rockaway Park, Rockaway Beach, Arverne, etc. However, what may seem like divisions, contain strength. There is strength in small numbers. Small groups such as civic associations, church groups, grassroots groups, tenant associations and community based organizations have the ability to target on specific issues, such as beach cleanups, food pantries, farmers markets. Energy and planning is spent on a focused and doable task. Each group is doing their part making Rockaway a better place and better prepared for a time of hardship, such as a natural disaster. My attitude and involvement with Rockaway land and community reflect my hope for a Rockaway future reaping the benefits of well planted, watered and nurtured seeds – an over-abundant harvest generations will appreciate, maintain, respect and perpetuate.

The Summer Shift Has Begun The Summer Shift, a new concept restaurant at the former home of Rockaway Taco on Beach 96th Street, is officially open for business. The Summer Shift is the product of a partnership between The MP Shift, a New York based branding studio, and Rockaway Summer. The restaurant will feature authentic food cooked up by Latin American chefs from all over New York City. The restaurant’s first incarnation is called “Neighbors” and features food by sisters Leyla and Ximena Yrala and Brazilian chef Carlos Varella. The vision behind Neighbors is to serve up authentic, yet simple food from Peru and Brazil, which share a 2,995 kilometer border. The Yrala sisters will be busy this summer after opening Chicks To Go, their Peruvian Chicken spot on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, in March. In addition to Chicks To

Go and Neighbors, the Yrala sisters also run La Cevicheria, a Ceviche joint at the 97th Street Concession. When asked about her hectic schedule, Leyla Yrala laughed and said, “It’s a lot of fun.” Neighbors will run at The Summer Shift on the following dates: May 29-June 1, June 5-8, and June 12-15. After Neighbors runs its course, Argentine chef Fernando Aciar will take over the space to launch his pop up. Aciar is a culinary veteran who has worked in Brazil, Uruguay, and Long Island before opening up O Cafe in New York City. Now he will be bringing his take on Argentinian street fare to Beach 96th Street. “The idea is to serve food that you’d see along the streets in Argentina,” Aciar explained. Aciar’s stint at The Shift will last from June 18 through July 14 and he will be assisted in the endeavor by Negro Piattoni, another Argentinian chef.

challenge has definitely been the real estate taxes in New York. Mounting taxes undoubtedly lead to mounting stress. But Goodman gets by with a very supportive and optimistic community. Channel Drive Service Station was unfortunately forced to face the fury of Hurricane Sandy, like many other Rockaway businesses. However, they were not about to let this 65-year-old story die there. With water reaching 8 feet high inside the station during the storm, the service station was operating at full capacity within 12 days. The company owes its quick recovery to the Shell Corporation, as well as to Dunkin Donuts. Both stepped up with needed funds and

backing to get the station back on its feet. A Dunkin Donuts store can now be found alongside the service station. Upcoming specials at the Channel Drive Service Station can be found on the Rockaway Times advertisement pages or you can visit their website at www.channeldriveservice. com. Sarah will be profiling other businesses that have operated for 25 years or more in Rockaway).

S.U.P Yoga: Amazing By Sheneca Sharpe

Andrew and Amy Dima, owners of A-Team Paddleboarding, offered something a little bit different this past Memorial Day weekend: S.U.P. Yoga. For people who are thinking “Well, what is S.U.P yoga?”, let me break it down for you. S.U.P means Stand Up Paddle which is just another way to say Paddleboarding. Paddleboarding is a growing sport now, and when I say sport you’re probably thinking “Ok, what does yoga have to do with it?” Well, this is where the marriage begins. You’re paddling over open water until you find a spot where you’re comfortable and come to a rest. And then you start doing the same yoga you would do on land, but instead on a board, in the water. As a person willing to try all things, I decided to give it a shot. Now, I was pretty worried about trying this at first because of the fact that I cannot swim, nor have I ever been on a board. Amy, the instructor, kept me calm with the fact that we would be over shallow water and I’d get the hang of it… Well, I did and it was absolutely amazing! It’s the most calming

thing closing your eyes and letting go of all the stress while over the water. You get a good stretch in, plus the added bonus of burning calories from paddling to a desired spot. As I said, Andrew and Amy had S.U.P yoga this weekend, but no worries! They will have yoga every Saturday this summer, so that you can get your inner “yogi” on. A-Team Paddleboarding is a new business previously covered in The Rockaway Times. They will be having yoga and a kid’s summer camp. For more information you can visit Andrew and Amy’s website at ATeamPaddleboarding.com to set up an appointment for some summer yoga or just visit the store itself, located on Beach 114-04 Beach Channel Drive #5, Rockaway Park, 11694; tell them The Rockaway Times sent you! (Sheneca Sharpe is a senior at Rockaway Park High School. She interns at The Rockaway Times and will be attending SUNY-Fredonia in the fall).

GOLF, TENNIS & POOL OUTING AT RICHMOND COUNTY COUNTRY CLUB Dana Gilewicz

Rockaway to Debut in Warsaw

JUNE 8, 2015

Wojciech Gilewicz may have been born and raised in Poland, but this spring he will be introducing Rockaway, a place he holds near and dear to his heart, to a new audience. Gilewicz will be featuring his exhibit, Rockaway, at the worldfamous Foksal Gallery, an avantgarde art gallery in Warsaw, Poland that was established in 1966. Gilewicz graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1999 and now splits his time between New York and Poland. He wears many artistic hats, working as a painter, photographer, installation and performance artist and video maker. To make ends meet, Gilewicz works in New York City as a waiter. “I must say that I like it,” he said about his part-time job. “It gives me some independence from the art world, and some contact with reality.” Despite the fact that he does not have any representation, Gilewicz exhibits overseas quite frequently. And even though his work has seen him travel all over Europe and Asia, it is Rockaway that stuck with him for his latest piece. Gilewicz moved to Rockaway to join his mother, Dana, who emigrated to the US in the mid-1980’s. After his mother moved, Gilewicz would spend his summer in New York City. After spending some time in Brooklyn and then Jackson Heights, Gilewicz landed in Arverne after his mother bought a house here. Gilewicz drew on the strong connections to his mother and his new on-and-off home for inspiration for his latest work. Rockaway is the title of Gile-

wicz’s third exhibition at the Foksal Gallery and he says that it sums up a phase of his career. Although he says his main form of art is painting, the exhibit consists of three videos -- Rockaway, Cuboids, and E22. The videos, Gilewicz says, all pay homage to his roots as a painter. Gilewicz shot the film just after Sandy and says the exhibit tells the story of his mother and what happened to her and the house after the storm. Gilewicz also says that the project is also a way to draw public attention on how and where contemporary artists live, and what inspires them. In the film Gilewicz follows his mother with his camera as she cleans up after the storm. Her house, in which Gilewicz has an art studio, was partially destroyed by Sandy. Despite spending quite a bit of time in Rockaway, Gilewicz says that he hasn’t really had the chance to connect with the ever growing artistic community on the peninsula. He says that part of the reason for this missed connection is that he spends summers, when Rockaway is really bustling, in Poland. Despite not having any success partnering with artists here, Gilewicz says he will still try to showcase his work locally. “I wish I could show my work here in Rockaway where it belongs,” Gilewicz said. Although he has not found a way to show his work in Rockaway, Gilewicz will be showing Cuboids in the Cuchifritos Gallery in the Lower East Side from October 24th until November 29th.

tubular s w vie Surf Beaches Update by Alex Karinsky

There were a ton of positives in last Friday’s beach opening, but it also reflected on our constant need to push for our place in the sand and ocean as surfers. Firstly, it was great to see the officials such as Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver, Councilman Eric Ulrich, Senator Joseph Addabbo and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder recognize how many upstanding citizens we have in our community, doing great things day-in-day-out and holding the flame to the feet of the people responsible for change, making sure it happens. Oh yeah, and the Mayor turned up on time too. (Bummer, I like controversy). It was also great to hear consistent recognition from the officials that surfing plays a huge part in the Rockaway community. This is a fact that should be promoted and ex-

pressed to its fullest degree and continually supported. Unfortunately we have to keep beating a drum to get the attention of community officials to get this done. Hopefully this changes very soon with some upcoming CB14 meetings, for whom need to bless the current recommendations for surf beach expansion. These are significant meetings we all need to attend and express our concerns why this hasn’t happened yet and insist it does happen. The dates for these CB14 Parks & Safety Committee meetings to discuss the new proposed surfing beaches is on June 2, 7pm at the Knights of Columbus on 92 St. June 9, same place, same time is the apparent voting for such a change. We encourage all community members to attend and sign up for public speaking before 7pm and explain why this is a huge benefit to

Rockaway as a whole and its importance economically. Don’t lose sight of the forest for the trees We need to keep a sensible and proper perspective on this too. While we struggle to get a measly couple hundred yards here or there, out of the miles of exposed Atlantic Ocean, we can’t be so transfixed and question to death where these small surfing areas are to be. Consider the fact that the Parks Dept. and the Lifeguard Association consistently shut down plenty of ocean access, and often the same stretches of sand, for lack of resources. To help you get a little perspective on this I have the help of long time Rockaway surfing resident and born/ bred NJ surfer, Robert Sherwood. AK: Hey Rob, you mentioned to me that in NJ they have 2 surf beaches per town. Can you elaborate on that? RS: If you look at the Rockaway Beach boardwalk it’s about 5-ish miles from Beach 9 to Beach 116 St. This is about the same distance of the south Monmouth County beach towns of Belmar, Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Manasquan, give or take a few blocks. In a side-by-side comparison, we see two surfing areas for all of the Rockaways versus five or more in south Monmouth County. AK: That’s a great point. We have two as of now, hopefully with another two more announced. But

Saving today with a Great Rate CD!

one is completely taken up with surf schools. RS: Belmar has one surfing beach and one commercial surf camp beach. Spring Lake has a surfing beach, sometimes two. Sea Girt one surfing beach, and Manasquan, at least one surfing beach, sometimes two depending upon the need. AK: Yeah Manasquan has two, each side of the inlet. So really it’s closer to 7 in total. RS: It can be argued that Arverne is more of a commercial zone than a surfing beach. Three for-profit surf schools (Skudins, Local’s, Frank’s) leave little to no space for surfers who aren’t affiliated with those businesses. If the City devoted one surfing beach for each Rockaway neighborhood, Far Rockaway, Edgemere, Arverne, Rockaway Beach and Rockaway Park, we’d have at least five surfing beaches. AK: Not including surf school beaches, great point! If you surf Rockaway you should join the Rockaway Beach Surfer’s Association. We have monthly meetings that I will post here, also online signup will be available AFTER this weekend at rbsurfersassociation.org, it’s only $20 for a lifetime membership. So please turn up to the CB14 meetings, even if you don’t surf and put in a good word for the surfers of Rockaway and how we’ve helped the renaissance of the peninsula.

Scallop Gratin By Sharon Feldman

Serves 2 1-1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature 2 large garlic cloves, minced 1 large shallot, minced 2-3 thin slices prosciutto, minced 1-1/2 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced 1-1/2 – 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1-1/2 – 2 tablespoons olive oil 2-1/2 tablespoons panko crumbs 2 tablespoons sherry or white wine 1 pound fresh scallops Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Place gratin dishes on sheet pan. To make topping, mix together butter, garlic, shallots, prosciutto, parsley, lemon juice, salt and pepper and mix until combined. Stir in olive oil until all is coated. Fold

in panko crumbs and set aside. Pour sherry into the gratin dishes. With a small, sharp knife, remove the white muscle and membrane from the side of each scallop and discard. Pat the scallops dry with a paper towel and arrange them in the gratin dishes. Spoon the garlic butter evenly over the top of the scallops. Bake for 1012 minutes until the top is golden and sizzling and the scallops are barely done. If you want the top crustier, put under the broiler until browned. Finish with a squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkling of parsley and serve right away. Dip with French bread. I served it with a kale salad, consisting of kale leaves, edamame, shredded carrot, blueberries, cranberries, cashews and sunflower seeds topped with cilantro avocado yogurt dressing.

But because not everyone is connected and because some of these photos should reach the print audience we figured we’d go old school and put some we find in the newspaper. As much as people like showing off their stuff in new age ways, there’s nothing like getting in a newspaper! Rockaway Little League: Tight Pennant Races And down the stretch they come! No, not in the Belmont Stakes…in Rockaway Little League’s incredibly tight pennant races. The battle for first place is especially close in the Pee Wee Senior, Minor Boys and Minor Girls divisions. In Pee Wee Seniors, three teams are neck-and-neck with records of 6-2: the Laquila Group Athletics, the Slices ‘N Ices Marlins, and the Animal Hospital of the Rockaways Angels. The American Legion Rangers are just half a length back at 6-3. The Angels and Marlins square off twice this weekend in games that will have major pennant implications. The Minor Boys division is nearly as tight. The Conte’s Carpets Pirates are setting a strong pace at 6-1 but the Sevpro Reds are just a game back at 5-2 with the Premier Baseball Braves and Ridgewood Savings White Sox breathing down their necks at 5-3 each. The top two teams go head-to-head this Sunday. A Pirates win could lock up the division but a Reds victory will make it a four-team horse race. On the softball side, the Minor Girls Graybeards Reds and J&E Industries Phillies have set a blistering pace, posting records of 7-1 and 7-2, respectively. The

Walsh Properties are looming just on the outside with a 6-2-1 slate. The Phillies and Orioles tangle on Saturday in a game that will determine which squad stays in the pennant race. In addition to the Reds and Phillies in Minor Girls, the only other Rockaway Little League team with seven wins is the Lichtenstein Lions Braves in the Major Boys division. The Braves are relatively safe at 7-2 while the Metalmen Sales Dodgers, onrockaway.com Pirates and Ram Title White Sox are in a tight pack vying for the second spot. The Braves can all but lock up the pennant of Sunday with a win against the Ozone Pest Reds. The Pirates and White Sox face off on Monday to see who stays in the hunt while the Dodgers will try to keep their first-place dreams alive on Wednesday against the R.F. Realty Orioles. Finally, in Major Girls, the Ram Title Royals (5-2) have about a two game edge over the St. John’s Hospital A’s (4-4-1) in the most competitively balanced division. The Royals have a lot of games left, starting with Sunday’s match-up against the Knights of Columbus Reds. All teams in the competitive divisions will make the playoffs. This

year’s post-season will be double elimination. Playoff games begin on June 10. In Major Boys action prior to the Memorial Day break, the onrockaway.com Pirates prevailed over the Val-Pak of Greater Brooklyn A’s 5-2 in a tight, well-played game. Pirate starter Nico Allen pitched an efficient complete game victory as he walked only two batters over the six innings. Nicholas GianniosDonohue and James Tuohey also pitched well for the A’s. The Pirates struck first when Philly Benoit opened the bottom of the 2nd with a double and scored on Harry Charles’ double two batters later. The A’s retaliated in the top of the 3rd as John Daudelin, GianniosDonohue and Andrew Carr hit consecutive singles. It looked like the Pirates would hold off the A’s as a strong throw from center fielder Billy Reyes to catcher Michael Caprio nailed Daudelin at the plate but Giannios-Donohue alertly scored the tying run as the Pirates failed to notice him looking to advance from 3rd. The Pirates struck back for four runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead for good as Caprio led off with a walk and hustled his way to 3rd on Liam Rayder’s single. Daniel Green drove in Caprio as his

hard ground ball was turned into a force out at 2nd. After pitcher Allen reached on an infield hit, Reyes drove in Green with a solid hit to center. Allen scored on a wild pitch and Reyes came home on James Mangan’s ground out. From there the Pirates defense supported Allen’s pitching limiting the A’s to one more run on Zach Erhard’s 4th inning single to drive in Ethan Hanft. The last inning typified the Pirates defense as Carr led off with a walk but first baseman John Ruoff then trapped Tuohey’s soft pop, stepped on first and fired to shortstop Benoit who tagged Carr for the double play. Second baseman Mangan then deftly backhanded Nick Roger’s ground ball up the middle and tossed to Ruoff for the final out. The 3rd place Pirates improved to 5-4 while the A’s fell to 3-5. DIAMOND DUST: Rockaway Little League is again selling pink socks to raise funds for members of our Little League community who are battling the disease. There are also pink headbands and wristbands. AHOY ROCKAWAY ! Water Temperature 57*F (entrance to N.Y. Harbor) We hope that everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend. Rockaway kicked off summer hard and with style (something she always does well). The peninsula came alive with parties, barbecues, picnics, surfers, DFD’s, and of course the beach, and speaking of the beach we have striped bass and bluefish in the surf, as well as fluke in the bay. It’s ALL right here in Rockaway ! It’s good to see and hear from everyone again, and it looks like it’s going to be an exciting summer fishing season here in Rockaway. Take a look at what our stations are reporting. Rockaway’s own “Jimmy the

Page 45

fisherman” checked in with us, and he’s on the move following the fish. Jim reports that the bay behind Costco’s is thick with bunker, the large school of bait fish were spotted off of Beach 63rd Street on the bay side. Jim tells us that BCHS is a productive place for Fluke with many fish in the 20”-21” size range moving into the area. Jim said that there are also bunker schools off of BCHS (Beach Channel High School), and that some BIG Porgies were taken near the boat ramp. Jim also let us know that there are many sea robins in the area.

few lbs) to larger fish in the 10+ pound range. Tom reports that the area is very active with fish, and he has plenty of bait. There are whispers of striped bass on the beach taking offers of clam and Tom said “the fluke are everywhere,” and that’s GREAT to hear!

Tom’s Wave service station on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park: We gave Tom a call and he reports that the blue fish are all over the sea wall area and are in all various sizes from “Harbor Blues” (a

Big Ron’s fishing station in Howard Beach: We called Ron and he tells us that the Blues and Bass are around and some of them are pretty big. Ron also informed us that on the “Cap-

tain Mike” (home port Howard Beach), a large fluke was brought on board weighing in at 12-1/2 lbs (YES, you read that right, 12.5 POUNDS), so get out your fishing pole, get some bait and hooks, and GET OUT THERE because, Rockaway’s got fantastic fishing going on right now !
