On Friday, June 5, a colorful piano mysteriously appeared on the Beach 86th Street boardwalk. The instrument is one of 50 placed all cross the five boroughs as part of Sing for Hope Pianos. The widespread public art installation brings uniquely painted pianos to different parks and public spaces around the city. They are available for anyone to play, from a curious child to a professional pianist. The pianos will be in place until Sunday, June 21. The two-week installation is meant to bring art and music to various communities. Each piano was painted by a different artist or designer in a studio. The piano at Beach 86th Street was designed and painted by Stephanie Mead of Brooklyn. The teal-colored piano features an orange octopus, attempting to play the keys with its many arms. Mead calls the piece Tentacles on the Ivories. Mead is an award-winning

Army Corps and Far Rock Redevelopment At CB14 By Michael Leboff After months of missed opportunities the US Army Corps of Engineers finally came before Community Board 14 to give an update on the status of the ongoing reformulation study for the East Rockaway Inlet to the Rockaway Inlet and Jamaica Bay. Anthony Ciorra, a senior program manager with USACE, presented on behalf of the Army Corps and announced that there would be a third public information hearing on June 24. While the exact location of the meeting is not yet determined, Ciorra said that it will take place on the east end of the peninsula. Ciorra also mentioned that there may even be a fourth session sometime in July as part of the Army Corps public outreach efforts. As the presentation continued Ciorra had to pause for applause after he announced that both Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Gregory Meeks have submitted letters in support of Alternative Three. Alternative Three is the only choice that includes groins. It also includes the beach and berm ele-
ments from the other two alternatives and includes the construction of 12 new groins between Beach 90th and Beach 122nd Street. Further, current groins would be extended from Beach 36th to Beach 49th and a new groin would be installed at Beach 34th. “I don’t want to speak too prematurely,” Ciorra followed up. “But the way that the analysis is looking at this point, Alternative Three is the plan that maximizes the net annual benefits.” Following the presentation from the Army Corps, New York City Councilman Donovan Richards addressed the board to update the community on some initiatives to revitalize downtown Far Rockaway. He began by saying that Mott Avenue is about to undergo some major construction so that proper infrastructure can be put in place. The de Blasio administration has committed around $10 million to redo the thoroughfare. Richards also informed the board that work on the Far Rockaway Library should start at the end of the year. After the Councilman concluded his presentation, the floor was
CROWDED CB14 MEETING turned over to Kevin Alexander, the president and CEO of Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corp (RDRC). Alexander came before the board asking for their support as the organization submits a bid to the New York Main Street Grant Program to secure up to $500,000 of funding to continue the construction of the Renaissance Center. After years of fighting to secure funding for The Renaissance Center, RDRC began working on the building in late 2013. When it is completed it will feature an expanded Time Warner Learning Center, meeting and conference space for up to 100 guests, a small business incubator, ground level commercial retail space and a suite of small professional office
spaces. In addition to the grant to accelerate construction of The Renaissance Center, RDRC was also looking for support from CB14 for another grant, also worth up to $500k. The second grant would help small business owners maintain and rebuild their storefronts in an attempt to create a more vibrant downtown business center in Far Rockaway. Community Board 14 District Manager Jon Gaska was in full support of the project. “My office is in this area. This area needs this money.” Following the presentation the board voted overwhelmingly in favor of supporting RDRC in their endeavor.

Bottoms Up Every year or so I stand on my toilet (because I really don’t know what a soapbox is) and make a public service announcement. It’s time you or someone you love schedule a colonoscopy. Most of what follows is from an old column but running it again is part of the annual routine. For you holdouts, those of you who’ve passed the age of forty, certainly fifty, and haven’t had the personal roto-rooter, it’s time. Just do it. It’s plain sensible and you can get in on the joke.
I’d like to use the expression, all kidding aside - - but you can’t put all kidding aside. It’s the procedure which makes comedians out of every patient. Gastro docs have heard it all. “Tell my wife you didn’t find my head up there.” “Now I know how a muppet feels.” “You put your left hand in, you take your left hand out…” “Captain Kirk, you’re boldly going where no man has gone before.” If the two doctors I’ve had are representative of the field, they’re among the most affable docs you
could find. The first guy I went to in Brooklyn had a phone number of 718-748-SHIT. That’s pretty good marketing – how could you forget that number. While behind me, so to speak, he discovered a polyp and announced, “We’re engaged.” That meant I’d be seeing him again. But it was a good thing it was caught when it was. This was more than 10 years ago. That one-time polyp got caught and hasn’t been seen since. Of course, colonoscopies and its weird cousin, the colonic, have become hip since the doctor first landed on my moon. You’ve got Katie Couric, Leo de Caprio, Gwyneth Paltrow and others extolling the wonders of the colon clean out. And I gotta say, you do feel like a million bucks when it’s all over. Just don’t make plans the night before. Even the directions on the nuclear stuff you take says, don’t worry, it will work. Be patient. If you need something from the store, send someone else to get it. Once the purge starts, you are … as the door on the airplane says, occupado. And word to the wise, never trust a cough, sneeze or even a giggle. When the fun starts, just remember it’s for a good cause (and you don’t even have to start a nonprofit). You’ll feel like a member of Congress at the State of The Union Address as you will stand and sit
Page 5 about a hundred times. The next morning, the day of the procedure, is the one time of year people can’t tell me I’m full of crap. So you newbies, you scaredy cats, get to it. Compared to the night before, the actual procedure is a walk in the park. Sometimes they let you watch on a little TV screen as it’s being done but it’s too reminiscent of a Kardashian TV show so opt for the anesthesia. And as soon as you’re alert, you can make lunch plans. Anyway, like anybody who’s got a connection, I’ve got a guy. Not sure where to go or how to start? Email me and I’ll send you my guy’s info. It’s your health. Take care of this and join the club. You’ll be glad you did and you’ll have lots of crappy new jokes.

Lots and lots of people enjoyed reading about The Wedding Cake house on Beach 117th Street. Now there might be a chance for people to prove their love for the home. New Yorkers for Parks, a non-profit group, rated Rockaway New York City’s best Beach in its annual report card. ***** Some residents in Arverne by the Sea remain angry about a middle school coming instead of a K-8 as was promised. Some complain that City Councilman Donovan Richards has a conflict of interest. His wife, Tameeka Richards, is listed as the assis-
tant principal at Challenge Prep, the middle school now planned for ABTS. ***** In August, Beach Sessions, an outdoor summertime dance series, will take place on Beach 81st Street on the sand. Beach Sessions is partnering with Surfrider Foundation, an organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans and beaches. But Beach Sessions could use some funding help. If you want to make sure Saturdays in August are dance-filled, go to beachsessions.tumblr.com for info about the kickstarter campaign. ***** Proposals to run a ferry system (Rockaway is part of the 2017 plan) are due Friday, June 12. The Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is not exactly a transparent agency so it is unlikely we’ll know how many companies submit proposals (but we’ll ask). The EDC is also looking for pro-
posals to operate a shuttle bus system that will get people to the ferry dock (location, still undetermined). ***** Speaking of the EDC, Kyle Kimball, who had been EDC President for nearly two years, has officially left and Kim Vaccari, the chief financial officer of EDC, takes over as interim president. Kimball announced that he was leaving more than two months ago but our Mayor is known to take his time making appointments so we expect Ms. Vaccari to hold the title “interim” for a while. ***** Like your drink in a mason jar? 116th Festival A Day of Play By Katie McFadden It was a beautiful day to be a kid (of any age) on Sunday, June 7. With perfect weather, several rides, performances and dozens of vendors, the International Children’s Day Festival on Beach 116th Street was a huge success. The event, hosted by the Beach 116th Street Partnership, was a way to give something to the community and to showcase what the up and coming shopping corridor has to offer. According to board
member and festival director, Mark Mina, about 16,000 people showed up throughout the eighthour event. “It turned out wonderful. The weather couldn’t have been better. The turnout couldn’t have been better. We had more Rockaway people than ever before,” Mina said. A similar festival was held last year called Poland’s International Children’s Day, but after discovering that the day is celebrated all
across Europe, the board of directors made the event more inclusive and open to all cultures. “We had performances from different cultures and food from different cultures like German, French, Italian, Polish and Caribbean,” Mina said. There were performances by the Polish School dance team, Mrs. Elaine’s and JUMP dance schools, World Champions Karate Center, the Grayriders and more. Kids made full use of the inflatable rides that decorated the streets, face painting and a petting zoo that featured an alpaca, goats, sheep and more. “It was nice to have a day where everything was free for the kids,” Mina said. “It was nice to see everybody come out together and
get along.” Mina says the festival would not have been possible without the work of the Beach 116th Street Partnership Board of Directors, sponsors like Elite, Station Liquors, Bryan’s Auto, Boardwalk Bagels, Belle Harbor Steak House, Goody’s, Brian Heffernan Realty, Ridgewood Savings Bank and Williams Company, and the Beach 116th Street Partnership’s new executive director, Linda Humphrey. “It was her first time involved in a City festival and she did a great job, Mina said of Humphrey. “Everyone who came realized that Beach 116th Street is alive and vibrant and is growing with a lot of new stores here.”

Skate Park Gets Super Bowl By Katie McFadden
The Rockaway Beach Community Skate Park on Beach 91st Street just got a major piece of the puzzle. A professionally built skate bowl was brought in this past week. After several days of dismantling the bowl, several trips to and from its former home in Manhattan, and piecing it back together; the new feature should be ready for the weekend. The $18,000 piece was sponsored by Converse and built by Coda Skateboards to be used during a threeweek popup event for Exposure Marketing to launch a new clothing line called Noah at the Supermarket gallery in Lower Manhattan. Once the popup ended, the bowl needed a new home and Patrick Smith, owner of Coda Skateboards, figured the Sandy-damaged Rockaway skate park could make use of it. He pulled some strings and reached out to friend and fellow skateboarder, Jimmy Dowd of St. James Clothing and Boarders Surf Shop, saying the bowl could be Rockaway’s, for free, as long as Dowd could move it out of the Manhattan space in time. Dowd put out the call to the community, asking for volunteers to help move the massive bowl, which was separated into 14 quarter pipes and corners in three layers of wood and
steel. Over the course of two days, Dowd and some others made multiple trips to Manhattan to transport the pieces to Rockaway, with his own truck, BytheBeach Coconuts’ company van, and a U-Haul truck that was paid for through a donation from Rockaway WISH. The new bowl is a hugely appreciated part of the temporary skate park, which has been built by the community with the help of St. James Clothing and Boarders, since Sandy. “This is the first bowl feature to ever exist in Rockaway. To get the $18,000 feature handed to us is huge. It’s an amazing skateboard feature. Once you drop into it, you just keep pumping around it. It’s like surfing in a pool,” Dowd said. The bowl is the first piece to be directly donated to the park. The original skate park was destroyed by Sandy in 2012. Not wanting to wait for the City to bring it back, St. James Clothing, Boarders and others from the skateboarding community, got Parks Department approval to come together and build a temporary park by themselves, piece by piece. “We weren’t holding our breath, waiting for the City. We wanted our skate park back, so we did what we had to do. We weren’t waiting for it to be provided for us. You haven’t seen tennis or handball courts re-
built. We raised thousands to make this skate park happen,” Dowd said. “Rockaway was so ravaged after Sandy, and this was the one area that still had so much life going on and activity taking place among the construction in the neighborhood. It was a sign of hope after the storm since something was finally being built back.” The temporary park, now being used in its third summer, will serve the community until the City builds the permanent cement skate park, which won’t be done until 2017. “This temporary park will be there five years by the time the new park is built, which is awesome because there would have been nothing there,” Dowd said. Dowd says bringing back the tem-
porary park has been a community effort. It has been made possible by donations from the Andy Kessler Foundation, Coda Skateboards, 5 Boro, Rockaway WISH and local businesses that have donated gift certificates or raffle items for skate park fundraisers, and those who have put in many volunteer hours to build pieces and maintain the park. “St. James and Boarders spearheaded this project, but a lot of local community residents came together and have volunteered endlessly every year to get it prepped for each season,” he said. “Every year we make this park better and better and keep people enthralled. Until we get this new park, we’re going to make Continued on page 15

Prize for Jamaica Bay Effort nizations like Rare are doing what they can to help sustain proven campaigns that rely on the hard work and ingenuity of locals. This locally sourced way of approaching natural disaster protection and environmental sustainability represents a much-needed change in natural disaster management. “Reducing Our Risk: Innovation for Disaster Preparation” is the third annual online challenge in the “Solution Search” contest series. Rare launched the contest last October and the competition attracted dozens of innovative solutions from more than 20 states across the country. These solutions were whittled down to ten finalists by a panel of expert judges that includes former U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore and former NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco. Following the announcement of the final ten solutions, the winners were determined by online voters. The People’s Choice Runner-Up comes with an award of $2,500 to help continue what the American Littoral Society has started at Jamaica Bay, which has lost an estimated 85 percent of its historic wetlands due to filling, pollution and alteration.
Some estimations have the bay eroding at 40 acres per year and a dramatic change like that doesn’t come without consequences. The accelerated erosion has led to a decline in the health of the fish and wildlife populations, a decrease in water quality, and increased local flood risks. It’s an issue that needs immediate and ongoing care, which is why the American Littoral Society sprung into action. The American Littoral Society launched in 1961 and has given a voice to the environment by empowering people to care for the coast through education and advocacy. Along with the help of 20 local boat captains, the Jamaica Bay Marsh Restoration Initiative has planted more than 180,000 native Jamaica Bay Spartina plugs and restored more than 40 acres of badly-degraded marsh islands since 2013. The initiative has recruited more than 3,000 local volunteers from corporate and nonprofit partners to help with this massive undertaking. It’s the first known community-led effort of its kind to take place in a national park. Among these volunteers have been urban teens from Restoration Corps, whose work in the salt marshes has even helped to inspire
DON RIPPE (photo by Devan King for The Nature Conservancy) some students toward careers in environmental management. Together, they aim to restore 80 percent of the bay’s marsh islands and return them to their 1974 footprint. By Michael Leboff On Monday night the American Littoral Society’s Jamaica Bay Marsh Restoration Initiative took home the prize for the People’s Choice Runner-Up at Solution Search in Washington D.C. Solution Search is a contest created by Rare, an international environmental organization committed to conservation programs that benefit both people and nature, that sources and rewards community conservation and development initiatives that are already working. “We are nearly ten years out from Hurricane Katrina, and starting another hurricane season, yet disaster preparation remains politically siloed and thus is often hampered and insufficient in practice,” Brett Jenks, the CEO of Rare, said. “Human and economic costs are increasing, and not only are solutions needed, but so too is a new kind of conversation.” The new kind of conversation Jenks is talking about is the local community raising awareness and taking action, rather than relying on the federal government for help. For example, something that happens at Jamaica Bay may not resonate with the population out of its reach. That is why orga-

this slice of heaven a little better every year for the community.” The next step to improve the park, will be weatherproofing and winterizing the new skate bowl. Dowd says it will cost between $5,000-$8,000 to seal the coat on the infrastructure of the bowl, purchase an skate light, or laminate that will go inside, and purchase treated Marine-Grade plywood to encase it. Every Day A Gift How can we flow from one moment to the next when our normal life becomes disturbed? There are so many highs and lows in life, that we never quite know what each day will bring. The past few weeks in Rockaway and Breezy Point have been very difficult for so many. Yet there have been beautiful weddings, graduations, proms and births. How does one find comfort when darkness smothers them? There is no easy answer. It has been 28 years since my family lost my baby brother John in a car accident that took his life at the young age of 21 years old. It was the most devastating event in our lives. Before that we knew only happiness and we had never experienced such a loss. My family was broken, no doubt about it. We would never be the same family but we had each other to lean on. There were nine of us; four girls, three boys, two strong parents and us. Our faith and belief system was strong but nothing prepares you for the loss of a child or sibling. Within two years my brothers, Patrick and Alex, and their friends started a non-profit organization in memory of my brother called The John P. Timlin Foundation. The healing process began and they took a negative and made it into a positive. We would begin to
raise money by holding a fundraiser once a year, inviting family, friends and co-workers. Whatever funds were raised would be given out during the year to a family who had a financial hardship. My brother John was known for his generosity. He would give you his last dollar if you needed it. So what better way to remember him by giving to someone who really could use help and we knew John would be so happy to have this done in his name. Today we smile when we think of John. We no longer mourn him, he is forever young and it is such an honor to have known him. Every day is a gift, John has taught me this. Living in the moment comes easier from John’s passing. We know life and death. No judgments, no expectations, only respect for one another. Letting go is really hard, but in the end you cannot hold on to the past, you must be present with what is and take a negative and put a positive spin on it. No matter how hard it is, this will be the path to healing. There is no doubt it is a process. The pain never goes away but one day you will smile at a good memory. May God bless all those who are suffering and keep you in the palm of his hand.

Shark Trackers By Michael Leboff
that everything below them is also in balance. Should they struggle to survive, it would be the first domino in a chain reaction with catastrophic results. “If we lose sharks, we lose the ocean,” Fischer said. “In order for the generations that follow us to be able to know what a fish sandwich tastes like, we need to study and protect these sharks.” OCEARCH’s first expedition took them to Guadalupe Island, a Mexican island in the Pacific Ocean. There the team tagged 22 sharks using the new method. Once they proved it worked, it was full steam ahead. “We wanted to have an inclusiveness unseen before,” Fischer said. “For this to work it had to turn into a global ocean movement.” Since then the team takes the boat around the world on up to three expeditions a year. What they do out of the water is just as important as what they are doing in the ocean. OCEARCH’s vast social media outreach has captivated shark enthusiasts around the world. Since it’s launch, OCEARCH has earned 8 billion media impressions, which has attracted corporate underwriters like Caterpillar who sponsor the live shark tracker on OCEARCH’s website. The most famous shark on the tracker is Mary Lee, a Great White Shark that was tagged off the coast of Cape Cod in 2012. Mary Lee, who has close to 75,000 followers on Twitter, makes a habit out of passing the Rockaway shore as she swims up and down the eastern coast of the United States. As for OCEARCH’s future, Fischer says they will continue to tag and study sharks as long as they have the funding to do so. To learn more about OCEARCH and their mission visit www.ocearch.org.

On June 1, Steven Spielberg’s classic film, Jaws, celebrated its 40th anniversary. The film’s release is considered a watershed moment in Hollywood history as it was the first ‘real’ summer blockbuster. The movie, which was based on Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel of the same title, also had a resounding impact on the relationship between human beings and sharks. The film turned Great White Sharks into one of nature’s most vilified creatures, a reputation that it’s still having difficulty shaking. According to a report by National Geographic, there was a sharp decline in U.S. shark populations following the movie’s release due to trophy shark fishing. Thanks to a misinformed public’s perception and commercial fishing, shark populations are now dwindling to the tune of 200,000 per day. Fighting to change the way sharks are perceived by the general population is the first step in a long battle for Chris Fischer, the founder and expedition leader of OCEARCH, and his team. “We have to shift the perception from one of fear to one of understanding,” Fischer said. Fischer founded OCEARCH in 2007 with a clear mission in mind. He wanted to crack the code on the best way to study and track live sharks so that we can learn more about their mating and breeding patterns. This information would prove vital. This is no easy task given the fact that some sharks can cover close to 20,000 miles of open ocean in one year. Scientists believe we can learn a lot about the health of the species by simply tracking a shark’s range. If their range is in good condition, then it is a good sign. If ranges shorten or become abnormal, it could be a clue that sharks are losing feeding and breeding ground. To undertake a study of this nature, Fischer, who hails from Louisville, Kentucky of all places, acquired a vessel outfitted with a forklift to lift giant fish onto the boat. He would use this lift to bring sharks aboard to be tagged and released. And instead of relying on scientists to find and tag the sharks, he brought expert fishermen and marine biologists together under a common cause -- to keep the ocean healthy. How can you tell if shark populations are thriving? By tracking and studying as many of them as possible. The irony in the whole “Jaws Effect” is that the shark’s role as the ocean’s apex predator is key to the overall health of the ocean. Since sharks are at the top of the food chain, if they are thriving it means

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon
Emergency! (Not So Much) They say Davy Crockett “kilt him a b’ar when he was only three…” and, if true, I am not so sure how comfortable ol’ Davy would feel living among his not so rough and tumble 21st Century brethren today. Yet another story recently surfaced about a couple who felt they had to call 911 and request a police response to their home because their pet cat was being overly aggressive, denying them access to the house. I mean, really? This is what it has all come down to? Call the cops because your pet cat won’t let you in? As I read the story I had a vision in my mind of Tweety Pie sitting in a cage in Granny’s living room on the phone with the cops
looking at Sylvester and stating, “I think I taw a puddy cat.” The difference being that Tweety Pie would tell the police “give me five minutes and then send an ambulance for the cat!” Although the day started out rather dreary, by early afternoon the sun was out and the temperature was nearing 70. The canteen at the Broad Channel VFW Post was standing room only this past Saturday as dozens gathered to celebrate the organization’s 2nd Annual Belmont Steaks party. Naturally there were the appropriate drink specials available such as the Belmont Breeze and the Lemon Scratch as well as the house favorite, the Moscow Mule. Dur-
ing the long, warm and dry afternoon hours leading up to the big race, Gail Waldheim (aka: Beerwench) made sure that all requisite whistles were kept wet! Once again house chef Rob Prokopowicz outdid himself with the menu offerings but the pièce de résistance was the Tube Steak Special which was an individual platter served with a large dog on a toasted bun with all the fixings and a large side of fresh home-made potato salad. Chef Rob individually delivered each order accompanied with a unique rendition of the racetrack’s “Call to Post” tune on a harmonica he had tucked away in his chef’s jacket! The Tex-Mex nachos and cheese were also deemed worthy of writing home about! If horseracing wasn’t your cup of tea, the backyard porch was filled with several people engaged in a hot and heavy card game of “Old Maid” being dealt by Joe and Erica Dougherty’s lovely daughter, Sarah. All in all it was a great day and the icing on the cake came when American Pharaoh rode into the history books as the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years! The VFW has a summer post barbeque scheduled for Saturday, June 20 later this month and is also planning on having a presence at the 9th annual Rockaway Rockstock and Barrels music festival on Saturday, June 27 on Beach 90th street from Noon to 6 p.m. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else? stroyed by fire. Flooding damaged an additional 2,100 homes. “Our families across Rockaway deserve the best possible protections against future storm surges. Not only is this $2.9 million in FEMA funding for the Breezy Point Double Dune System necessary for the protection of thousands of Breezy Point families, it is also a way of increasing resiliency for the entire Rockaway Peninsula,” Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder said. “The Breezy Point Cooperative is excited to learn that FEMA has approved this project to proceed to the next phase. We wish to thank Senator Schumer, the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, DHSES, the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, Congressman Meeks, Assemblyman Goldfeder as well as FEMA for their advocacy and support. As our community continues to recover from the devastating effects of Super Storm Sandy, protection from future storms and protecting our families and our homes remains our priority,” Arthur Smith, Chairman, Breezy Point Cooperative, said. “While mindful that this will not guarantee the resiliency measures that are essential to our community, it is an important step forward in the process of protecting the residents of Breezy Point and our neighbors,” The Breezy Point Risk Mitigation Project is a critical part of barrier island protection for both the Breezy Point community and the Jamaica Bay watershed and floodplain. The US Army Corps of Engineers Rockaway Beach project ends at Beach 149th Street, approximately 2.6 miles east of Breezy Point. The double dune system will be designed to withstand the forces associated with a 100-year flood height, as indicated on FEMA’s latest maps, plus sea level rise (2.58 feet) over the life of the project and provide long term, sustainable protection.

Breezy Point is one step closer to getting a double dune system. On Tuesday, June 9, local politicians announced the approval of $2.9M in FEMA funds to initiate Phase 2 of the Breezy Point-Roxbury Double-Dune and Bayside Protection System. The whole project to evaluate and build a primary and secondary dune plus other protective measures for the ocean and bay sides of Breezy Point will cost about $58 million. On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Congressman Gregory Meeks, and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder announced that the next step was approved, which includes permits, hydraulic analysis, a National Environmental Policy Act assessment and administrative costs. “Hurricane Sandy hit the whole Rockaway Peninsula extremely hard, left hundreds of homes in tatters, leveled existing storm-protection barriers and cost untold millions in disaster aid. That is why we must invest now in prevention and build the best possible double-dune and bayside systems to protect the thousands of families in these communities from the ravages of future storms and flooding. Now that the City and State, in partnership with the federal delegation, has secured the necessary federal funds, Breezy Point and Roxbury will be even stronger and more resilient than before,” Senator Schumer said. The creation of a dune and bayside protection system would help Breezy Point and Roxbury residents weather a future storm and would prevent largescale damage on both sides of the community. These storm-protection methods were not in place when Sandy rolled through, leading to storm-surge damage and a massive fire in the community on October 29, 2012. Approximately 215 homes were destroyed by storm surges and 135 homes were de-

Great Flooring Begins With Us
By Antoinette DeMetropolis “What should we do this summer?” is not something you hear often at a home in Rockaway. Our beach can keep you busy for months and the area is often jampacked with family-friendly festivals and fairs once the weather warms up. However, having kids out of school for an entire summer can be pretty intimidating or maybe you just want to try something different with someone special. A farm getaway can be a wonderful trip and a very educational experience, especially for kids. Farms offer an opportunity for us city dwellers to understand better where our food comes from and connect the growing process to our tables at home. Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture is located only 25 miles upstate in Pocantico Hills, NY. This farm, funded by the Rockefellers, has been an innovative force behind the organic movement since the early 2000s. From Wednesday through Friday the farm is free to visit. On the weekends the calendar is packed with tours and interesting activities such as meeting the chefs, collecting eggs and making pesto. Tickets do sell out often, so I would recommend purchasing them in advance. The Summer Solstice Celebration, held on June 19, is a great way to enjoy the longest day of the year with music and seasonal food from local vendors. If getting dirty is not really your thing, you can skip the
farm altogether and head to their world-renowned award-winning restaurant, Blue Hill Farm. It is run by executive chef, Dan Barber who wrote the NY Times bestseller, The Third Plate. More information can be found at www.stonebarnscenter.org. Located three hours north of the city in Franklin, Handsome Brook Farm is the supplier of our delicious CSA eggs. They offer a beautiful Bed & Breakfast stay where you can help pick vegetables and feed the animals. The work isn’t pressured – it’s mostly for learning and connecting with the farm. You can also sit back and relax if you choose. You can find more information about their eggs at www.handsomebrookfarm.com. They are currently redoing their website so I recommend calling 607-829-2587 or booking through a third party such as Expedia.com. For those of you that head out to PA for summer getaways, Lancaster County offers numerous farm stay options. A notable option that is affordable for families is Verdant View Farm. They offer activities such as feeding the chickens, milking the cows and fishing for bass in their pond. The breakfast is made from homegrown ingredients on their farm. For more information, go to www. verdantview.com. Whether you decide to stay local or try one of these options, I hope you have a wonderful summer filled with great eating and exploration. If you remember, take an extra moment to taste the difference between the fresh produce from your garden or the local farmers markets.

Nearly 1 in 5 New Yorkers struggle with being able to provide adequate food for themselves and their families. In a city with extremely high housing and transportation costs, in addition to other necessities, being able to have enough to eat should not be a concern for people as well. However, the sad reality is that too many New Yorkers face this challenge, especially in Far Rockaway. Urban Upbound provides services to help low income New Yorkers alleviate this challenge by providing assistance in enrolling in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps. The primary goal of this program is to help families sup-
plement the cost of their diet with nutritional foods. By meeting with a SNAP Specialist, you will be able to find out of you are eligible to receive this assistance. Urban Upbound is a service provider which works to alleviate poverty in low income neighborhoods. By speaking with a SNAP Specialist, they will be able to guide you through the benefits process and refer you to other programs, such as workforce or financial counseling, which can also provide necessary tools to help your financial situation. Make an appointment to speak with a SNAP specialist by calling 718-7840877 ext 358 or email jonathan@urbanupbound.org.

I Fought The Law Dear Editor: On Sunday afternoon I rode my bicycle safely on the boardwalk, yes I knew I was not allowed and did it anyway, and a police officer chased after me ON HIS BICYCLE, to say, “Miss there is no bike riding on the boardwalk.” There were officers on bikes stationed between Low Tides and Rippers. Clearly the fact that the officers are using bikes as transportation on the boardwalk, shows that bikes are the easiest way to get around on the boardwalk. Reminds me of our mayor cancelling our ferry, but then taking a boat to the Rockaways when he needed to come to the peninsula. Nancy Re

Dear Editor, (Re: The Wedding Cake House article) What an experience growing up in the White House. We called it that and The Castle. My parents moved out from Greenwich Village after they got married and bought the house in the mid50’s from, I believe, the Fitzgeralds. Seven crazy kids crawling on the ledges and going up to the roof. What a view and what a childhood. We moved out to the Jersey Shore but didn’t sell the house till the late 80’s. Peter Hogan
the environment. This is a most unwise project, borne out by contemporary history. Germany, for instance, is more desperate than most for sourcing energy, and so the government aligned with their big utilities to build wind farms in the North Sea...where the wind blows ferociously. Sometimes the obvious is obviously wrong, and that’s the case over there. The turbines break down, the offshore and coastal transmission grids bleed excessively, and they kill birds - lots of them! Don’t believe me? - google up ‘lunacy on the North Sea’. Now, they wanna do the same here, off Rockaway and off NY’s gorgeous south shore. They say the project will create hundreds, maybe thousands of jobs. Yeah sure of course they will, because they’ll need boatloads of craftsman constantly out on the coastal shelf repairing these megalithic 35-story turbines - and for what - a few megawatts of power? Terrible idea, but championed by the proud environmentalists!!! Shockingly because we’ve been surrounded by it since the time of the ancients, enough energy reaches the earth every day to power the entire earth’s needs for a year! It’s just a matter of time before we reengineer solar collectors to absorb and transmit this energy - but it’s coming and probably this decade. Please, tell the folks in Albany and Washington D.C. and the engineers behind this project and the Utilities behind this project - no, No, NO to windmills. You remember the ultimate futility and gross waste of Shoreham? This will be worse, ‘Shoreham by the Sea’. Pete Stubben

Service Station Nostalgia Dear Editor, (Regarding Channel Drive Service article) I have many fond memories of the service station and the boat yard that was behind it dating back to the early 1950’s. I can still pull up vivid images of the station with my uncle (Louis Cappell), his son Jimmy Cappell, Jack Jaffe, Estelle and Arlene at the desk, Joe Cappell wandering through, and a variety of mechanics whom I met at the station when they worked on my cars. I believe this photo could be a group of foreign visitors to Rockaway Point in September of 1913. Their form of attire indicates they are from the Southeast Asian country known as India. The gentleman wearing the bowler hat appears to be an Official Greeter talking to the consorts of a Prince & Princess of India. The Prince is wearing a full length sword scabbard on his left side and the Princess has a veil over her face. The woman in between has a jewel on her forehead that indicates her “cast” in the country of India. The man on the far left, wearing a cap, appears to be a plain clothes policeman. Wanted: Rugged Maniacs Floyd Bennett Field Fun
By Sarah Boyle “Rugged Maniac,” is the perfect name for this upcoming obstacle race. A blend between physical exertion and a celebratory party. If you have a need for speed and a love for adventure, sign up for the Rugged Maniac Obstacle Race. There’s still time to join the fun! Rugged Maniac is returning to Aviator Sports and Events Center for their 5th annual mud run on June 27th and 28th. Interested runners can register now for the challenge of running the three mile course, climbing towers of shipping containers, and shooting down enormous water slides. The great part about the Rugged Maniac experience is its balance.
Burn off those unwanted calories from the early morning party with an afternoon run. The racecourse features more than 25 obstacles, with a new and exciting challenge at each turn. Obstacles will literally put you through “The Ringer.” The Ringer tests your grip strength and handeye coordination, leaving you to shoot down the particle accelerator, a 50-foot water slide. Just in case the obstacle course didn’t succeed in releasing all of your energy, you will have the chance to ride mechanical bulls, experience adult bouncy houses, and enjoy various other games and activities. If all that leaves you thirsty, Harpoon Brewery will be ready and
waiting with a drink after a tiring race. Jessica K. gives a raving review of the Mud Run, “Best run ever! Perfectly organized, no jam ups at obstacles, plenty of mud and muck! Not one bad thing I could say. Loved it!’ Not convinced yet? With your registration you receive the bonus of a t-shirt, in case the thought of covering yourself in mud and muck is what’s keeping you from registering. You will also receive a medal to lord over your less athletic friends, and free professional race photos! If you register now through June 23, the cost is $99.00 (plus tax,) or $110.00 (plus tax) on the day of the event. Students and military receive $10 off, spectators are $10.00 per person, and parking is free!
The Mud Run also has volunteer opportunities. Volunteering is the perfect way to get a behind the scenes look at the organization of the race. If you volunteer on race day, you receive two t-shirts and a chance to run in the event for free. There are morning and afternoon volunteer shifts. If you sign up for the AM shift you can then run in any of the afternoon races, even if they are sold out. PM shifts will run in the morning and then volunteer during the afternoon run. You can find more information and register on Rugged Maniac’s website, http://www.ruggedmaniac.com/ (Sarah Boyle will be entering her sophomore year at Lehigh University. She is interning at The Rockaway Times for the summer).

SOCIAL MEDIA SNAPSHOTS Some great photos are found on Instagram and Facebook and various social media outlets. But because not everyone is connected and because some of these photos should reach the print audience we figured we’d go old school and put some we find in the newspaper. As much as people like showing off their stuff in new age ways, there’s nothing like getting in a newspaper! Here’s a few we came across this week.

“Did Anybody Here Call A Community Paramedic?” This piece was written by Vince Flood more than two years ago. Legislation is now being considered to amend the public health law, allowing the practice of community paramedicine. By Vince Flood
“EMS is not an emergency service: it is a social service that deals in emergencies.” One of my first mentors, Ray Fogarty, shared these words of wisdom with me more than 25 years ago. Almost three decades of EMS experience later, I find these words to be as relevant as ever. With most emergency departments overwhelmed with nonemergent patients, the emergency department has been transformed into a health access point, and the ambulance into simply a means of transportation. This is not only expensive and inefficient, but it also puts increasing financial strain on the healthcare system. New healthcare models must evolve, and quickly. One new model is the community paramedic.
What Is A Community Paramedic?
Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com
At its core, a community paramedic is an experienced paramedic who has received additional training in social services and community outreach. That training strengthens the skills that he or she already has, such as patient advocacy and health education. They then serve as community health workers who visit patients in the community. By addressing the non-emergent minor and chronic healthcare problems of these patients, thereby meeting their medical social, and psychological needs, community paramedics can prevent the unnecessary transportation of stable patients to emergency departments, while remaining fully equipped and ready to handle a true emergency.
What Does a Community Paramedic Do? The community paramedic performs several vital services: Health instruction/Disease management (e.g., DM, CHF, HTN) Immunizations Wound Care Health Screen-
ings Wellness Checks Recognition of and referral for mental health issues There are a number of realworld examples of this concept. Since 2009, MedStar, the ambulance provider for Fort Worth, Texas, has served 390 patients in what they call mobile health care.“These 390 people went to the emergency department 50 percent less frequently while in the program and 80 percent less frequently in the following 12 months.” MedStar’s Community Health Program “has saved more than $7.4 million in emergency room charges and reduced 911 use by these patients by 86.2 percent in 12 months postenrollment, saving $1.6 million in EMS charges.” 1 In the first decade of this century, San Francisco, San Diego, and Washington, D.C. began sending paramedics into homeless populations, aiming to reducing 9-1-1 calls. The San Francisco Fire Department reduced emergency call volume by about 75 percent in just 18 months among homeless users of the system, saving an estimated $12 million. Hennepin Technical College in Minnesota offers the only college–based community paramedic program. The college offers such classes as “Role Advocacy and Outreach,” “Community Assessment,” and “Care and Prevention Development Strategies.” If this program were to be brought to the New York City area, not only would it relieve stress on overburdened emergency departments and EMS systems, but it could present a career alternative to seasoned paramedics who have suffered the wear and tear of the streets, would like to stay in the patient care practice, but have no interest in taking a supervisor or instructor role. How often has an EMS worker asked, or heard his or her partner ask, “They called 9-1-1 for this?!” Yet the non-emergency work of the paramedic need not be seen as an abuse of the 9-1-1 system. It can instead be viewed as potential contribution of the community paramedic. For more information, visit NYCommunityParamedicine.org or contact Paramedic Vince Flood at slowmedic @aol.com.

RWA: Always Busy By Michael Leboff The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is an organization that wears many hats. Through different programs for people of all ages, the RWA aims to nurture an understanding, respect and connection between the Rockaway Waterfront and its communities. Currently the RWA is in the home stretch of their academic year programs. Most of the work done during this school year focused on research projects in Jamaica Bay and restoration projects in the Beach 40’s. As these programs wrap up for the year, the organization turns its attention to a summer schedule packed with different projects, programs, and events. Specifically the RWA does a lot of work to develop neglected areas along the peninsula. One such event is Project Underway. The RWA launched Project Underway in 2013 in order to convert the roadbed underneath the MTA A-Line from Mott Ave to Beach 116th Street into a linear park with bike and pedestrian lanes.
The RWA will be hosting two upcoming community design workshops for Project Underway this summer. The first will take place at the RWA Garden on Rockaway Beach Boulevard (adjacent to Beach 59th Street) on Saturday, June 20 from 1-3 p.m. The second workshop will be held at the Arverne View Community Room on Wednesday, June 24 from 6-8 p.m. At the end of the summer the RWA will hope to realize a long-term goal with the opening of their new facility, RISE: Rockaway Institute for Sustainable Environment. RWA has been converting the former Engine 265 Ladder 121 Firehouse at Beach 59th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard into a center for community-based programs and cultural activities. The goal is to have RISE open by the end of September 2015 and to partner with other community programs at the space. To learn more about RWA or any of their programs, visit www.rwalliance.org.

Rock Republicans Holding Meeting The Rockaway Republicans are holding their next meeting on Monday, June 15, 2015, 7:30 pm at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, Beach 126th Street and Beach Channel Drive. The meeting will have an Education Panel discussing the planned changes in entrance qualifications to NYC Specialized High Schools. Board member Margaret Wagner says the club extends an invitation to those interested in “helping
us get involved with local issues, such as: Transportation, school issues, parks & beaches, flood insurance and build it back. The more people we have, the more we can benefit our community. We look and support local candidates to run for office. Look out for our petitions this coming week. Volunteers will be knocking on doors for signatures for local resident Michael O’Reilly. Michael is running for Civil Court Judge.”

Pork Medallions with Parsnips and Grapes By Sharon Feldman
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary leaves, minced
■
This recipe is quick and perfect for a solo dinner. Thinly sliced pork tenderloin cooks up in just a few minutes. The side dish is prepared in the same pan. Cooking for two? Double the recipe.
Ingredients:
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil ■ 6 ounces pork tenderloin, cut into 3/4” thick slices ■ Coarse salt and ground pepper 3 small parsnips, peeled and sliced ¼” thick ■ 1 cup seedless red grapes ■
Directions:
In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Season pork with salt and pepper and add to skillet along with the parsnips. Brown pork and parsnips on both sides, about 5 minutes total. Add the grapes and rosemary, and cover. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook until pork is cooked through, parsnips are tender, and grapes have just burst (approximately 3-5 minutes). Serve pork with parsnips, grapes, and pan juices.
Before cavemen developed, baboons had hairy bottoms just like the rest of their bodies. They looked like regular monkeys. There was nothing special about them. “I want to be different and special,” said one baboon. “Why should we have to be regular? Why can’t we be different like giraffes with their long necks? Or, Zebras with their zigzag stripes?” “Or, elephants with their long trunks?” another baboon chimed in. Soon, all the baboons were chanting, “Oo, oo, aa, aa!” In other words, “You’re right! Let’s change!” The baboons tried so many ways to change. They tried to do magic and failed miserably. They attempted stretching their necks, drawing zigzag stripes, and growing trunks. After a while, some baboons gave up. When it got colder, the giraffes and

Long ago, when the world was so new that the ocean wasn’t any larger or deeper than a puddle, so new that the flowers were about to bloom for the first time, and the mountains were only as big as little piles of sand, the only few of the zebra kind, lived in Africa. The zebras were plain white animals who loved to eat grass, and admire the other animals. They were jealous of them, too. They were plain, boring, and white while the other animals had a variety of patterns. For example, the cheetah had spots, the tiger had stripes, the giraffe had spots, and even the ugly hyena had a unique pattern, stripes. The zebras wished and wished that they had unique stripes of black and white. One day, a huge storm hit Africa. All of the zebras were taking a lei-
surely walk, eating grass. Suddenly, a tornado started whirling around the zebras, and picked up some black color from the night sky. While the tornado was whirling around the zebras, it splattered the black color on all of them. Since the black color was still wet, the tornado and the crazy wind whipped around the zebras in circles, as fast as speeding bullets and spread the color around on the zebras. This gave them great unique, black stripes. The zebras were ecstatic because they were no longer plain, boring, and white. The zebras’ color would never wash off because the color of night does not wash away, when the sun comes out. The zebras no longer admired the other animals they admired their own stripes in their reflection, looking at the lake.

the zebras and the elephants needed warmth and decided to start a fire with some twigs which led to a forest fire. The animals ran around yelling, and tried to stop the fire. The elephant tried to blow on the fire with his trunk. The giraffe tried to splash nearby water onto the fire. The zebra…well, the zebra did nothing but run away to protect her stripes. The eldest and wisest baboon declared, “This is our chance to shine! We can save the forest and all the animals in it. We can change and become heroes!” All the baboons gathered in a circle to make a plan. They decided to sit on the fire. The baboons spread out and sat at different places on the fire. Soon the fire was out, and the baboons were heroes. They all had red bottoms, but at least they were finally different. That’s how baboons got their red, hairless bottoms.

RX For Rockaway Medical Facility On The Way By Michael Leboff
On Tuesday night a team of local doctors and healthcare developers came before Community Board 14 to introduce themselves and shed light on their plan to build a new, state-of-the-art medical facility at the site of the old Key Food at 10538 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The project was initiated by Dr. Mark Gelwan, a Belle Harbor based ophthalmologist, and a group of nine other doctors who wanted to bring a high quality ambulatory surgery center (ASC) to the peninsula. ASCs are modern healthcare facilities focused on providing same-day surgical care, including diagnostic and preventive procedures. Dr. Gelwan’s group will anchor the facility, which will feature an ambulatory surgery center, as well as an urgent care, dialysis, oncology, pain management, physical therapy and much more. “This will be a complete facility for everyone,” Dr. Gelwan said. “We have all the services that a hospital would have, except for the beds.” Additionally Dr. Gelwan said that the facility will use North Shore-LIJ, who consulted with and guided him through the process, as their transfer hospital. “They are committed to this area,” he said of North Shore. While Dr. Gelwan’s group will be the main tenant, the project will be developed by a joint-venture entity called 105 Rock Beach Realty, LLC. 105 Rock Beach Realty is a partnership between Community Healthcare Associates (CHA), a healthcare developer with four complexes in New Jersey, and Rock Beach Realty Group, who operated the Key Food until it was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Bill Colgan, one of the founding partners of CHA, believes that partnering with longtime local business owners like Rock Beach Realty Group will be a ma-
OLD KEY FOOD BUILDING WILL BE TORN DOWN jor reason for this project’s success. “They’re longtime Rockaway people,” Colgan said. “Which is really important to us.” Colgan also said, “CHA is excited to be part of the rebirth of the Rockaways by bringing back healthcare and jobs to the community. This new Medical Arts Complex will be anchored by an Ambulatory Surgical Center, headed by Dr. Mark Gelwan, and will employ over 100 people.” Community Healthcare was founded in 2008 in order to fill the healthcare voids in areas where medical facilities and hospitals were closing down. CHA began by repurposing closed hospitals and turning them into modern medical centers. “We’re healthcare guys who got into real estate,” Colgan said. “We’re not real estate guys who develop healthcare or medical properties.” The lot where the building will go up allows for 100,000 square feet of development, so the plan is to build the facility in phases. The initial phase will be to demolish the shuttered grocery store and erect a 50,000 square foot building. If all goes according to plan, the group will then develop another 50,000 square feet in phase two. According to the building’s rendering it will be three stories high and feature parking underneath the structure. Colgan also said that the facility will be elevated out of
the floodplain and will be enabled for backup power generation on site. Originally Dr. Gelwan and his group planned to build the health center at the old courthouse on Beach Channel Drive. At the end of September that plan fell through due to zoning and contractual issues but the team was able to advance the medical center to the site of the closed Key Food which he called a “much better option.” According to Colgan the project is progressing at a nice pace and
he expects that they will be submitting their plan to the Department of Buildings in September. They expect construction to last approximately one year and hope that the complex will be open by the end of 2016. The group was met with a round of applause at the conclusion of their proposal and Dolores Orr, the Chair of Community Board 14 extended a warm welcome. “We’re very excited about this, welcome to the community.”

Ideas for A New Twist on QueensRail By Keith Goldberg While we wait for the ferry to be restored, and with Select Bus Service proposed for the Cross BayWoodhaven Blvd. corridor, debate continues on improving rail access from Rockaway along the LIRR right of way that formerly carried the Rockaway Beach Branch into Penn Station. Other uses have also been proposed for the right of way including a High Line type park. It is my position that a rail line is still the best use for this property, but that we need to refocus this, not as a Rockaway issue, but as something that is necessary for all of Queens. As much as we would appreciate LIRR service to Penn Station, I don’t think there will be sufficient ridership to justify and sustain it as our ferry odyssey has taught us. There has also been tremendous growth on Long Island since the Rockaway Branch was terminated and the increased rail traffic into Penn Station since then would not result in the same travel time that was achieved back then.
We need instead to look to the line to be part of the subway system. This can still provide quicker access to midtown via rail. The primary goal of this project will be to provide a true northsouth rail line for Queens that will ultimately stretch from Rockaway to LaGuardia airport and link with the east-west subway lines and LIRR along the way. This project will require a lot of funding and optimistically, probably a 30 year timeline, completed in phases like our boardwalk. The first phase would focus on the existing right of way between the A line Aqueduct Station and Jamaica Avenue. A station built at Jamaica Avenue and 102nd Street could have a one block Skywalk connection to the J/Z station at Jamaica and 104th St. The main LIRR Jamaica station would then be only a short ride away on the J/Z, and both Penn Station and all Long Island stations would be much more easily accessible for Rockaway/ Southwest Queens residents. There you have it. After over 8mo’s of trying to get these additional surfing beaches — not just for Rockaway residents, but for ALL OF NYC — the omnipresent and notorious Community Board 14 shot it down in a hail storm of utter confusion and nonsensical blabbering. DENIED!!!! It would seem these residents of Community Board 14 would prefer their beaches stay closed rather than be used in a positive way. Classic NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) attitude and pathetic community fiefdom continues to spew it’s ugly hate and denial in all directions. It’s tragically sad. Just when you feel optimistic that Rockaway’s headed in a positive direc-
tion, you get reminded not to be so optimistic. We’ve all heard it before from “those” residents, the ones who’d rather wallow in self pity and cry foul at any concept of progression, because it’s always been that way and you’re ruining their life with change. Even if it means safer neighbors, safer neighborhoods and safety in the water. What angers me most is the blatant double standards performed by some of these “authorities”. Why was it that many items that weren’t on the agenda got a voice? Even got a vote without going through the proper channels, possibly waiting for months for their topic to be heard? More so, why were they able to talk and support their argument while they never offered the same
The Rockaway Times
would also provide a bonus of reduced travel time for Rockaway students attending Mary Louis and Archbishop Molloy High Schools, and for mainland students coming to Scholars Academy and Beach Channel Campus. Once the Jamaica station is in service, construction of a station at 101st Avenue in Ozone Park can follow. The second phase would cover the stretch from Jamaica Avenue to the vicinity of the former Whitepot Junction. Stations along this stretch would be added at Forest Park/Myrtle Avenue, Metropolitan Avenue (increasing access to Christ the King HS and Metropolitan Educational Complex) and Fleet Street. The line would then go underground as it approached Queens Blvd and a station at 63rd Drive and Austin Street could connect directly to the LIRR, which would also require a new station to be built. It would also connect with the Queens Blvd subway lines (E,F,M,R). This phase would probably encounter the most opposition as we have already seen in discussions regarding the right of way. There is also the issue of the interruption of the right of way immediately north of Forest Park but I believe this can be overcome. The key is being able to demonstrate that there is a benefit for these residents and not just an imposition on them.
This is where the third phase comes in. It will be the most costly and time consuming but it is also what makes it a project that benefits all of Queens and justifies all phases of the project. As the line goes underground and passes under Queens Blvd and the LIRR, it should continue underground going north along Junction Blvd/94 Street. Stations would be needed at Corona Ave, Roosevelt Ave (with connection to the 7 line and access to Citi Field/National Tennis Center), Northern Blvd, Astoria Blvd, and finally LaGuardia Airport. LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports would then be easily linked via this line and the AirTrain from Howard Beach station. Upon conclusion, this line would greatly increase access for all NYC, and particularly Queens residents to LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports, Aqueduct/Resorts Casino, Citi Field/National Tennis Center and the beautiful beaches of Rockaway. It would thus be viewed much differently in a Cost-Benefit analysis and Rockaway would stand the best chance of bettering its transportation situation if it is tied to something that will benefit all. to the RBSA, to defend the colossal negative delivery and misinformation spewed forth? Details offered to me about the outreach to these specific communities seemed like all was good. I know because I spoke to people personally and even negotiated with one of the Associations, as mentioned in last week’s column. If there wasn’t outreach, why were there only two people to turn up from the 109-111th vicinity to voice their concerns and four from 6067th? Where were all the others if it was such a bad idea? There will always be naysayers to these proposals, like the two from 109, but even they were open to a compromise and agreed to a move to 110 – 112. The CB14 shot it down so vehemently and passionately. There was a technicality that Rockaway Civic needed to bless these beaches with a letter to CB14. It didn’t happen and it hasn’t stopped things in the past, considering that the chair of that civic is on the actual CB14 board. Pathetic and lame, right there and then they refused her to write it. Something felt odd to me Tuesday night and somehow knew that this was already set up to FAIL. It was a witch hunt. The fervor at the way they attacked the topics, which were delivered with such negativity, was galling to say the least. Despite there being all positives from the Parks & Safety Committee meet-
ing a week previous, including a unanimous vote, the verbal blessing of the Parks Dept. and Rockaway Civic, the path to denial was already set. It was a sh*t show with CB members not even knowing at what point they were commenting on which motion. But what stood out was the 100+ turn out for support by the Jewish members of a Synagogue, all for a minor expansion of their space and change of parking rules around their temple. Where were the surfers when our temple is the ocean? Where was the support to speak up & defend your right for additional access to our temple? Where were the surf schools who profit from our beaches and essentially stole the second surfing beach from the community? Where are those who consistently send Instagram feeds from our beach? I could go on and on...they were intimidated when they saw the huge volume of Jewish people to support that cause. It would have been the same if surfers had turned up in numbers to support the surfing beach expansion . Frankly put, unless more surfers attend these things, get involved and be passionate to support it, the community “authorities” will continue to suppress it because they think it only serves a few and they will fight tooth and nail...NIMBY!

The 7 Most Dangerous DIY Home Renovations One in five DIY-ers tackling home renovations ends up in the hospital each year due to accidents, according to the Home Safety Council. Don’t become a statistic. Here are the seven most dangerous DIY home renovations you should leave to the experts. Tree Trimming & Removal: Trees don’t always fall in a predictable manner, creating a hazard for yourself and your property. It’s best to consult a certified arborist, no matter how handy you are with power tools. “If a tree falls during a storm, a DIY mishap, or a careless neighbor’s landscaping project, take photos and contact your claims adjuster as soon as possible,” says Erie Insurance Vice President and Product Manager, Joe Vahey. “Your adjuster can help evaluate the damage and explain how your homeowners insurance can help.” Asbestos Removal: Many homes built before 1980 contain asbestos. Before renovating, it’s a smart idea to have your home inspected for asbestos-containing materials by accredited professionals. Leave clean-up to experts, and limit your exposure to the area. Inhaling airborne fibers may cause harmful respiratory problems. Roof Repair: When faced with severe storm damage, homeowners often look for a quick fix for roof damage. Rather than running the risk of falling or injuring yourself, have your homeowners insurance claims adjuster verify damage and schedule repair work with an experienced company. In the long run, this will save you time, money and help you avoid injuries.
Electrical Repairs: While it may be easy to change a light switch or install a ceiling fan (make sure your power is turned off before you start), replacing circuits and other larger projects should be done by professionals. This will prevent shocks, injuries and potential fires, while ensuring your home is up to building codes if you eventually plan to sell. Gas Appliance Repairs: Properly cutting off or hooking up gas lines can be tricky, so leave gas appliance repairs to the professionals to protect against potential gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning. Knocking Down Walls: If you’re looking for an open floor plan, think before tearing down walls yourself. Do you know which walls are load-bearing and where plumbing or electrical lines are located? Professionals will know how to best navigate the project from start to finish so you stay safe, and your home stays intact. Pest Control: Not all pest-control products should be handled by the average consumer. Keep your family safe by hiring a pest control company to handle toxic substances properly. More renovations safety tips and information on homeowners insurance can be found at www.ErieInsurance. com. Before taking on your next big project, think about where you can bring in the pros to save time and money in the long run, and keep your family safe and sound. If accidents do occur during the DIY renovation process, be sure to loop in your insurance claims agent to help assess any damage. (StatePoint)

And the Flag Came From Where? By Katie McFadden
Ever wonder where those American flags along the boulevards come from? As we approach Flag Day this Sunday, its important to give credit where credit is due to those who keep the patriotic spirit going along our public streets. When the Wounded Warrior Project started coming to Rockaway, the project paid for flags to be placed along the parade route along Rockaway Beach Boulevard, down to the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. The flags would only stay up for about a week, until they were taken down to be used for the next time the WWP came to town. Following Hurricane Sandy, Jimmy Mullen, one of the WWP volunteers that put up the flags each year, thought it would be a good morale boost for the neighborhood, to bring the flags back. “I thought it would give us a good feeling about the neighborhood and would make it look nice,” Mullen said. Since buying the flags comes at a pretty penny, Mullen, a member of the local volunteer organization, the Graybeards, passed the idea along to his fellow members and asked if they’d be willing to cover the costs and
maintain the flags each year. Without hesitation, they agreed. “After Sandy, the Graybeards decided that it would be a nice community gesture to show our patriotic pride and put the flags up between Memorial day and when the weather turned bad,” Mullen said. Since many of the WWP flags needed to be replaced, the Graybeards had to purchase roughly 80 new flags so they could line Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 149th to Beach 116th Street. The Graybeards reached out to Brown’s Hardware on Beach 116th to purchase the flags locally, and owner Liz Hanna helped by selling them at exact cost. “She didn’t take profit, which provided a great discount,” Mullen said. “She’s a very generous person and takes no recognition.” The Graybeards placed the flags on every utility pole that has a light above it, along Rockaway Beach Boulevard. “After Sandy, seeing those flags was like getting a shot in the arm to lift spirits and beautify the neighborhood because people were bummed out,” Mullen said. The Graybeards has made it their mission to maintain the flags and replace them when needed. To do this, they encourage residents
to contact the Graybeards office when they see a damaged flag and give the location, so it can be properly removed and replaced. The office can be reached at 718634-6812 or office@graybeards. com. Donations toward the flag project can also be made to the Graybeards office, so that they can continue maintaining the flags for years to come. Mullen says part of his inspiration to decorate Rockaway Beach Boulevard with flags came from the flags along the Main Road in Roxbury and Breezy Point. Those flags have been placed and maintained by residents of the Roxbury and Breezy Point communities for many years. It is made possible by donations from families in the neighborhoods. Donations can be made to Richie or Charlie Cannon in Breezy Point for that project. Inspired by The Graybeards’ flag installation up to Beach 116th Street, the Rockaway Civic Association recently started to continue it east from Beach 116th to Beach 92nd Street, installing flags on utility and light poles throughout Rockaway Park and Rockaway Beach. Those interested in helping with this project can reach out to President Noreen Ellis at nellis@

rockawaycivic.com. Some may have also noticed flags along Shore Front Parkway in recent years. According to John Cori, the flags along the beachfront road from the Beach 100’s to the 80’s, have been placed by several groups including Friends of Rockaway Beach, the Rockaway Beach Civic Association and residents of the Dayton buildings. However, Cori says flags have not been placed this year due to the ongoing boardwalk and light pole construction.

Diary of A Fat Man – (He Named The Column And It May Change Again) By Bruce Bernfeld I guess I can start my story two and 1/2 years ago. October 2012. Seven months prior I had started Weight Watchers and by October 25th I had lost 90 pounds and was down to 205. Then came Sandy. Weight Watchers ( in West End Temple) washed away and I developed a self diagnosed case of PTSD. ( I stayed home that night). Two wonderful excuses to eat again. I am now back to fighting weight. 288 pounds. I also had a horrible winter here and in Florida with 6 or 7 viruses and ensuing bronchitis. To get to the bottom of the causes for my illnesses I have just completed a month of visits to internists, ENT’s, allergists and pulmonary docs. They talked of sinus surgery, COPD and immune system breakdown. After all the tests came back negative they all arrived at the same diagnosis: TOO FAT!! In fact, today, the allergist told my wife to start looking for a new husband. While my heart was strong, he said, and I would not be dying of a heart attack, he was sure I would end up with a stroke!! I guess that finally clicked. Get Your Lines In AHOY ROCKAWAY ! Water Temperature: 65*F at B116th St. (911 Tribute Park). Rockaway started this weekend a bit on the cloudy side as Saturday was a “less than perfect” day, but it was still okay. Sunday was the “Gem of the week” as temperatures were comfortable. The mild temperatures were accompanied by a cool breeze delivered fresh off the Atlantic Ocean. The tide was running well, the sun was out, and Rockaway had her summer sparkle on and she looked GREAT! The water temperature is rising as well, up a few degrees from last weekend. We contacted our local stations and here’s what they had to report.
Bernie Matzen and Mike Mormile were fishing the outgoing tide east of the Atlantic Beach bridge (on the inside) and they nailed some keeper fluke. One fish measured 18.5” long, and another Flattie measured 22” long. Good eating tonight for Bernie and Mike. The fish took an offering of “Killie and Squid” on a combo rig. Tom’s Wave service station (bait and tackle) on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park: We spoke with Tom and he reports that we definitely have striped bass in the surf on the beach. Tom mentioned that he’s
noticed that the bass hit the bait more often on overcast/cloudy conditions with some wind and surface chop. Tom reports blue fish in the bay. The fluke are a bit off this week. Tom said, “There’s even a shortage of ‘shorts’ (under-sized fish).” The hot spot for the area is just east of B.C.H.S. where blues and bass are being taken on bunker and clam. The bass are leaning a bit more towards the offering of bunker. Big Ron’s fishing station in Howard Beach: Ron tells us that the blue are showing up less but the bass are showing up more. Ron said that now that the blue fish are falling off a bit, there is more bass action going on. There is still some blue fish action in the bay but the BITE is “ON” for the bass. Ron states that the bass will hang out under the blue fish while they are feeding. The bass just collect the scraps of bunker that sink down to the bottom underneath the blue fish feeding frenzy. Ron said that’s why “bunker heads” catch more bass because that’s what sinks down to the bottom underneath the blue fish while they attack the bunker pod. Let’s face it, bass are smart. That’s why they’re so hard to catch. Ron also said that the fluke action has slowed down but there are some Porgies are scarce but reports are that they are still further
22 INCH FLUKE east. Well that’s it anglers. Remember to be a good angler and take your trash with you when you leave. If you are fishing from the beach, the only things that you should be leaving behind are your footprints. Remember to be a “true” sportsman and throw back the little ones. Only keep what you will eat. For more information on New York state salt water fishing regulations, please visit http://www.dec. ny.gov/outdoor/7894.html. Until next week !

Saturday May 30th wrapped up the spring season for the Lacrosse Club of Rockaway (LCR). Approximately 100 boys and girls ranging from K-8th grade participated in clinics and intramural games for 8 straight Saturdays in April and May. According to coaches, the skill level, participation and enjoyment increased each week. LCR announced the formation of teams in the 3-4th, 5-/6th, 7-8th grade divisions to compete in the inaugural NYC lacrosse league in the spring of 2016. LCR expressed gratitude to the many volunteer coaches who made the spring season possible: Caitlin Cook, Ed and Kevin O’Donnell, Jim, JD, Lauren and Patrick Blum. As well as parents, specifically Pat Lane, who were instrumental in helping bridge the gap for many parents exposed to lacrosse for the first time. Lacrosse is a simple game, easily taught, but difficult to master. LCR looks forward to seeing those interested in the Summer

Now that the water is warming up, more and more people may be looking to take a dip. While the ocean may be enjoyable, it also comes with dangers. Luckily, our lifeguards are on duty, but its always good to know what a rip current looks like before you find yourself in one and need rescuing. Rip currents are powerful, fastmoving channels of water (up to 8 feet per second) that typically flow from the shoreline to beyond the area where waves break. They can form on any beach where waves are breaking, often near sandbars and jetties. A rip current can be a challenge for even the strongest of swimmers and can lead to distress and panic. What does it look like? Look for a choppy channel of water moving in a churning motion, a line of sea
foam, seaweed or debris moving steadily out to sea or a disrupted pattern of incoming waves. Still not sure? Ask the lifeguard if they spot one. If you happen to get caught in a rip current, the most important thing not to do is panic. Stay calm and don’t try to fight the current. Instead, swim parallel to the beach to swim out of the current. When safely out of the current, swim at an angle, out of the way of the current and head back to the beach. If you can’t swim that way, remain calm and float or tread water lightly until the rip current strength weakens and you can swim away from the current and toward shore. If you can’t make it to shore, try to wave your arms and call for help to draw the attention of the lifeguard.

The first place finishers were the Ram Title Royals (8-3) in Major Girls Softball, the Graybeards Reds (10-1) in Minor Girls Softball, the Lichtenstein Lions Braves (9-2) in Major Boys Baseball, the Conte’s Carpets Pirates (9-2) in Minor Boys Baseball and the Laquila Group A’s (10-2) in Pee Wee Senior Baseball. The Major Girls Royals were the last team to clinch, rallying from an 11-10 deficit to eliminate the St. John’s Hospital A’s Tuesday night. While the older girls were battling to a tight regular season finish, playoffs began on Wednesday in the Pee Wee Seniors and Minor Boys divisions. The other three divisions begin post season action this weekend. All teams in the competitive divisions made the playoffs. This year RLL is employing a double-elimination tournament format so that all teams get at least two playoff games. For complete playoff brackets and access to each team’s TeamWall page, visit the Rockaway Little League site (http://rockawaylittleleagueny. com/Game_Schedule.html). The fifth-place Lifetouch Royals finished their Major Girls regular season on a positive note, topping the Knights of Columbus Reds 1211 Tuesday night to avenge a defeat from the week before. In the earlier matchup, the Reds secured a well-played 14-8 victory over the Royals. Reds’ pitchers Noelle Cook and Margaret Murray garnered eight strikeouts, while second baseman Lauren Lynch made two putouts and hit a two-run homer, driving in Maggie Brady. Carianne Sconzo scored three times on two hits and a walk and got two RBIs. Victoria Meier scored three times on three walks, while Mary Israel was patient at bat getting three walks, one push in run. Mary also scored. Jillian Ortega scored twice on walks and drove in one sacrifice RBI.
In a much anticipated meeting of top teams in Girls Minors division, the first place Graybeards Reds defeated the J&E Industries Phillies 7-3. The Red’s hitting standouts were Nikki Mortellaro and Sarah Allison. Pitchers Kelsie Price and Caitlin Mullen kept the Phillies’ bats in check. The game ball went to Caitrina Mullally who reached base all three times she was up and did an excellent job behind the plate. In Minor Boys, the El Caribe Dodgers finished with a flourish, going undefeated in their last four. The final performance was an exciting 9-9 tie with the divisionwinning Conte’s Carpets Pirates. The Dodgers had the lead the whole game and had a 9-5 advantage going into the bottom of the last inning. The Pirates mounted a comeback, tying the game with one out. Charlie Degrechie made a diving stab to get the second out. Pirate slugger Luke Carson then ripped a line drive to second base that Tommy Hickey snagged with an unbelievable jumping grab to save the Dodgers from defeat. The Dodgers finished their last four games 3-0-1 and hope their momentum will carry into the playoffs. During the Dodgers’ streak the El Caribe crew knocked off the NY Premier Baseball Braves 16-2 and squeaked by the JAH Tax Prep Rockies 10-9. Against the Braves, Matthew Steiner and Aiden McCor-
mack combined to give up just two runs. The Dodgers bats stayed on fire. Charlie Smith (55, two triples and a double, 3 RBIs), Aiden McCormack (5-6, two triples, 3 RBIs), John Kelly (3-6, 3 RBIs) and Charlie Degrechie (2-5, 2 RBIs) swung the hot bats. Ben Lindon was sharp in the field. In the nail-biter against the Rockies, Eddie Coyne pitched a solid game. The Rockies mounted a comeback in the final frame. Matthew Steiner came in and got the save. Charlie Smith (2-3, a double, 2 RBIs), Aiden McCormack (3-3, two doubles) and Charlie Degrechie (1-2, 2 RBIs) were the hitting stars. Nick Davila was solid in the outfield. The Major Girls All Star game was held Friday night, June 5. The teams were coached by the Reds coaches, Bill Murray and Jim Hurley. Each girl had her name called and, after saying the Pledge of Allegiance, played ball. All of the girls and their families that came to support had a great time; it wasn’t about the competition so much as it was about having fun. Coach Murray and Hurley agree that the Major Girls’ division is filled with a lot of talent, heart and sportsmanship. They hope the girls remain friends and continue their athletic careers
through high school. Big thanks to league commissioner Moira Mullen for all she does for RLL.
