Dear Old Dad A Father’s Day Tribute

By Katie McFadden Have you met my dad? My dad is awesome. You may see him walking three little white dogs along the beach, riding a bike with a paralyzed Pomeranian in a basket, and if you’re having a garage sale, Danny McFadden will be there. My dad is a hero. He would never admit to it, but spending 31 years as an officer for the United States Park Police, he sure has some stories of heroism. In 1986, my father, who often patrolled alone, gained the only kind of partner he ever had. Bear, a German Shepard, became my dad’s work buddy when my dad became a K9 officer. An incident in January 1989 would test their bond. While responding to a stolen vehicle call, my father accidentally drove his police SUV onto a curb along the Belt Parkway to try to bypass traffic. The large vehicle flipped over, leaving him upside-down in the car. Not thinking about his own condition, he saw that Bear, who had been thrown from the vehicle, was walking around outside. Recalling a lesson from K9 training, in which he was told that if he was ever in an accident and wasn’t

able to get to his dog to control him, first responders might have to shoot the dog who was protecting his partner, in order to attend to the officer. He took off his seat belt and crawled through a shattered window to reach the dog. His furry friend was fine, but didn’t relieve himself until three days after. On June 6, 1993, a boat called The Golden Venture ran aground off the coast of Rockaway at around 2 a.m. The boat was carrying 286 Chinese immigrants, who jumped into the water in order to get to land, but soon discovered that the Rockaway currents were stronger than expected. My dad and two fellow officers were the first to show up at the scene. The immigrants were screaming in Chinese, but the cries for help didn’t need to be translated. He had to act quickly, as NYPD and FDNY backup wouldn’t arrive for half-an-hour. Despite not being able to see much in the pitch-black night, my father and the other officers helped bring about 80 people to shore. He received the Medal of Honor from the Park Police for his actions that night. My dad was there on 9/11. Although arriving after the initial World Trade Center collapse, my father wasn’t out of danger. He was chasing

28 DAYS

after some civilians who had stolen FDNY uniforms from abandoned fire trucks and were looking to loot the remaining buildings. The chase came to an end when someone said World Trade 7 was collapsing. Everyone around him split into different directions. My father could feel the wind of the collapse behind him as he ran into a nearby McDonalds. He spent the next month with his K9 partner, Durak, searching for people among the debris at the World Trade Center and then stood at Federal Hall with his partner, to take a break from the chaos. An iconic photo of my father wearing a gas mask, and his K9, standing on a pedestal at

Federal Hall, was published around the world in different publications. My father earned a merit award for his service on 9/11. Remember that plane crash in Rockaway, two months later? My dad was there. It became a family joke that my dad was like Forrest Gump, accidentally finding himself in some of the biggest moments in history. When Flight 587 crashed on November 12, 2001, my father ran out of the house with the clothes on his back and responded to the scene, four blocks away. With no victims surviving the crash, my dad went to the Continued on page 27

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has launched a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) call center pilot program to serve and support policyholders with the servicing of their claims. Flood insurance claims can be complicated, and policyholders may have questions in the days and weeks following a disaster. The NFIP call center is reachable at 1-800-621-3362, and will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (CDT) Monday through Friday. Specialists will be available to assist policyholders with the servicing of their claims, provide general information regarding their policies, and/ or offer technical assistance to aid in recovery. For those who prefer to put their concerns in writing, a “Request for Support” form is posted at www.fema.gov/ national-flood-insurance-program, which can be filled out and emailed to FEMA-NFIP-Support@fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 540-504-2360. Call center staff will be able to answer questions, including questions such as “How do I file a flood insurance claim? What type of documentation is needed? Can I still obtain disaster assistance even though I have a flood policy?” as well as more complicated

insurance questions about the extent of coverage, policy ratings, and more. The call center will also be open to disaster survivors who have general questions about the NFIP. “Flood insurance provides residents with the ability to protect themselves financially against the most common disaster we see in America,” Roy Wright, Deputy Associate Administrator for the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration, said. “We’re providing this new resource to ensure that the people we serve have another way get information they may need to understand how flood insurance works and how to navigate the claims process. This hotline also provides us with a direct connection to policyholders themselves should they have concerns to report about how their claims are being handled and enabling us to take prompt action to ensure that they receive every dollar they are owed under their policies.” Disaster survivors and policyholders are asked to have the following information available when contacting the call center: contact information (Name, telephone number, email address if applicable); policy number; address of damaged property; and the name of flood insurance carrier.

By Kevin Boyle

Easily Distracted I was sitting in my car, a white SUV, which is basically like every other car on the street these days, when the trunk door opened and some woman chucked a frozen turkey or something like it into the car. I opened my door and stepped out and the lady almost had a heart attack. She tosses a turkey into my car and she’s the one who almost has a heart attack? Her startled reaction, of course, was because she thought my car was hers. So she didn’t expect anyone to suddenly come out of the car.

We had a good chuckle, though it was a little weird. Ok, lady, move slowly, and remove the turkey from my car. The car mix up is a fairly common thing, at least on Beach 129th. I remember a time when I double-parked while my son and his friend ran into a store for a snack. When they came out they both jumped into the back seat. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the back seat of my car. I was watching them in my rear view mirror as they realized they were in the wrong car and then bolted out.

60 Minutes did some piece about these people with incredible memories who remember every day of their lives. It was amazing but not nearly as fun as stories of regular people having momentary, Grand Canyonsized, bouts of forgetfulness. Beach 129th was also the scene of a classic brain lapse. The details are sketchy but I won’t let that get in the way of a good story. After a long day of work, anotherwise, smart and educated fellow parked on 129th, just to pick up something quick. He went into the store, got what he needed, and came out and walked home, forgetting that his car was on 129th and, I think the story goes, with the motor running. Maybe double-parked. I think it was the next day before he realized where the car was. And I think it’s funny mostly because I could see myself doing it. I couldn’t find a suit I owned (for the one time a year I might wear one) until I went to the cleaners to pick up my wife’s stuff. Tom and Rose of Harbor Cleaners presented me with my suit ten months after I’d dropped it off. Oh, that’s where it went. The PS to the story is that they handed me the $62 I left in the suit pocket. I remember hearing about another story in which family va-

cations were always being interrupted by the mom who couldn’t remember if she had turned off the iron. Stop the car, she’d say, soon after everyone was crammed in the car. “I think I left the iron on.” She did this on two or three trips until one time the father didn’t stop but reached under his seat and held up the iron. “You didn’t leave it on.” We heard it when we were kids: You’d forget your head if it wasn’t attached. Yes, I would. And I’d probably put it on top of the car before driving off. ***Happy Father’s Day. Now go put out the garbage, drive your kids where they want to go and give them twenty bucks when they ask for it.

Happy Father’s Day! Next week’s edition will be our FIRST ANNIVERSARY edition. If you like that we’re still here, please let our advertisers know! ***** Charlie Ciliberti is our youngest contributor ever. Back in March the 10-year-old St. Camillus student (heading to Channel View in the fall) contacted us about writing. He began his letter by stating, “I’ve wanted to be a journalist for a long time and I am really good at ELA and writing.” Little did we know he’s a civic activist and entrepreneur, too. He gave an earful to the Mayor at the beach opening a few weeks ago and he runs Choo Choo Charlies, a stand that sells lemonade and other goodies. His interview with Phil Goldfeder is in this week’s edition. ***** Another youngster to keep an eye on is Aiden Keane, a fifth grader at PS 114. Aiden has been selected as “the one and only extremely talented” grand prize winner of Scholastic Reading Clubs’ World of Possible Poetry Contest. His poem “I AM A DAY

DREAMER” was selected as the ONLY winner from more than 5000 entries—nationwide. Entertainer and one of the stars of America’s Got Talent, Nick Cannon, and Scholastic will be hosting a poetry slam in his honor at PS 114 later this month. Read Aiden’s poem on Page 29 in this week’s Rockaway Times. ***** The 31st St. Francis Summer Classic begins Thursday, June 18 with Men’s Open League play at Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard. The Women’s Open division follows on Monday, June 22 with games in the St. Francis gym, while all other divisions begin on Monday, June 29. The associated Graybeards League is at the halfway point now with games on Thursday nights at St. Francis and St. Camillus gyms. The Summer Classic is a Rockaway tradition that not only features great basketball but brings the neighborhood together in a great setting. Games are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and some Fridays beginning at 5:45. Wednesdays are reserved to make up any games that are cancelled due to weather. The Summer Classic means summer is truly here now.

***** Larry Mullen Jr. of the band U2 posted a picture of himself on Twitter in front of a Beach 116th Street/Rockaway Beach sign on the boardwalk. More than 20,000 people viewed it after we posted the picture on Facebook. Hey, that reminds us: Like Us on Facebook! ***** The Rockaway Gliders Running Club will be at Beach Channel High School track - Mondays and Thursdays at 6 pm for progressive workouts and will meet on Saturday mornings at 8 am at RBB and Beach 129th Street for group runs. John Edwards says all are welcome. ***** We sent a Freedom of Information request to the MTA regarding the Crossbay Bridge. That was in January. No response yet. Gotta wonder just how free the information is. ***** The Belle Harbor Garden Club is planting flowers at Pat Brackley Park located on Cronston Ave and Beach 124th St on Saturday, June 20 at 9 am. Volunteers are needed. Gloves will be provided. Bring your own hand shovels and trowels. ***** As first reported by the Rockaway Times in November, a bar/restaurant/motel called the Community House, owned by locals, is coming soon to the old Irish Circle location.

According to a Facebook page and website that launched this past weekend, it is expected to open in August. Read more about it in the Rockaway Times in the next few weeks. ***** Katie Honan reported with DNAInfo that the old Rockaway Park Hotel on Beach 116th was recently sold for $2.7 million. The same buyers also purchased a house on Beach 114th for more than a million dollars. Neighbors on that block say multiple beds were being moved in during the week. Propertyshark.com lists the property on Beach 116th as a “Detention House for Wayward Girls.” ***** Many people weighed in on Alex Karinsky’s Tubular Views column from last week, which had the headline, “Denied.” Alex expressed frustration with the Community Board’s decision to table the decision on approving beaches at 109-111 as surfing-only beaches. John Cori responds in this week’s Between The Groins column. Fear not, readers. We will not have a back-and-forth forever on this issue. ***** Retired police officer, Michael Schuierer, who worked locally (and helped many after Sandy) was killed in a car crash on Long Island. A Go Fund Me campaign has been set up to help his wife and young sons. Go to: gofundme.com/x32eaf7 if you’d like to help.

Recently I spent the day over in Woodside with my mother celebrating her 98th birthday. During the day I happened to ask her how her memory was doing and she replied, as she has for the past many years, “Well me young lad, I would gladly chance to wager my memory is probably finer than yours!” I told her that in light of the fact that I am now 65 years of age, perhaps she might consider dropping the term “young lad”. She gave me a sharp look, leaned forward in her chair and whispered, “I would you old fart but, truth be told, I forgot your name five years ago!” Happy Birthday Mom! May I take this opportunity to publicly thank a former neighbor of mine here on West 12th Road in Broad Channel but who now lives “across the bridge” who immediately reached out to me after reading about the plight of a Broad Channel resident with health issues who was experiencing difficulty in obtaining assistance from Medicare. Many of you know Beth Hanning from her weekly column “Slice of Life” from our other local weekly newspaper. You know, the one named after a wind-generated nautical disturbance that travels through the ocean water from one location to another location ultimately washing onto the beach! What you may not be aware of is that Beth is also the Director of Communications of Rockaway W.I.S.H. (Women Inspired to Support and Help), a local charitable organization which has been described by our local Assemblyman, Phil Goldfeder, as “a group of amazing women whose kindness and generosity knows no bounds…” Beth

graciously offered the assistance of her organization in the matter and I would just like to state for the record that her concern and offer of help was greatly appreciated by all involved. You can visit the Rockaway W.I.S.H. website at rockawaywish.org Gather up your family, friends and neighbors and stop by the Broad Channel VFW this Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. for a good old fashioned community summertime barbeque replete with clams on the half-shell, hamburgers, hot dogs and ice-cold draft beer. Admission is $20 for adults and half price for children, with children under 4 admitted free. All are welcome and as always, all proceeds from the event are used to provide assistance and services for our veterans. Located at 529 Crossbay Boulevard in Broad Channel, NY, right on Jamaica Bay, the Shad Creek Association will host its 21st Annual “It’s A Fluke” Fishing Tournament on July 11. 95% Sold; Ready For Next Phase By Michael Leboff

Rockaway’s development and revitalization is no longer a secret. Every day it seems like there is something big coming. Whether it be a new restaurant or a new hotel or a new business, it is plain to see that people are betting on Rockaway. While some people may think that Rockaway’s resurgence is happening overnight, the truth is that it began years ago. One of the catalysts of the Rockaway rebirth is Arverne By The Sea. Back in 2000, HPD put out an RFP for the development and the Arverne by the Sea team, which is comprised of the Beechwood Organization and the Benjamin Companies, won the bid. The developers broke ground in 2004, the same year the first unit was sold. Since then about 1,500 units have been sold and 1,300 are currently occupied. Gerard Romski, who is the project executive of Arverne by the Sea, thinks that the burgeoning community’s diversity is a key draw. “I always say Arverne by the Sea is the gorgeous mosaic,” he explained. “It is a great place for not only the new first time homeowner but also for the new empty nester. It really has everything from great restaurants and

shopping to surfing.” The mid-peninsula development features residents who moved from all over the New York Metropolitan Area. Many came from Rockaway, but Romski says that the newest trend has seen new residents move from Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island. “The secret is out,” Romski said. In addition to a modern beachfront home, new owners also receive a 20-year UDAPP tax abatement and a one-year family membership to the YMCA at Arverne by the Sea. There is also a Stop & Shop and a 25,000 square foot Retail Transit Plaza within steps of every home. Residents of Arverne by the Sea are also among the peninsula’s best positioned when it comes to public transportation. The Beach 67th Arverne by the Sea Train Station and express bus service to Manhattan are also just a stone’s throw from the development. While all of these amenities are close to Arverne by the Sea, it is designed to be an inclusive community open to all of Rockaway. Just like the YMCA, the planned charter school at ABTS will be open to all. The school being built at ABTS was originally supposed to be a priContinued on page 20

DENIED! (Not Really!)

That’s what my colleague Alex Karinsky, here in The Rockaway Times would have you believe about Community Board 14’s decision to not move forward on a motion to

convert the beaches at Beach 109th St, Beach 110th St and Beach 111th St. from swimming to surfboarding only. Just one thing! It was not DE-

NIED! Not even close to being DENIED! There is a book called “The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People” by William R. Covey. In it he talks about “listening with the intent to understand, not with the intent to respond” as one of the successful habits! By Alex’s comments in last week’s Rockaway Times, it sure looks like Alex did not listen too well at the meeting with the intent to understand, because if he truly understood what happened, it would have been quite clear as to what the concerns were for the full Community board and why we, as Community Board 14 members, chose to table the proposal. If he understood, he most definitely would not have thrown the Community Board, and his fellow Surfers under the bus! TABLED! TABLED! TABLED! That’s all it was, tabled! Which means it will be revisited by the full board at a later date. Nothing was denied. While we are waiting for that later date to come, my recommendation to The Rockaway Beach Surfers Association(RBSA) is the same as it was when I stood up at the very first RBSA meeting back in the summer of 2014. It was to get full community support of future surfing beaches of the residents directly affected by the change. Now to help you fully understand what the concerns there were

The Rockaway Times for the full Community Board, lets backtrack to the Parks Committee meeting on June 2nd. At that meeting the committee heard a compelling presentation by Alex as how great surfing impacts an area and how well areas have flourished with a surf culture. I think Dan Fault calls it Surfer-nomics! Mr. Karinsky stated that his association had done community outreach and members of the RBSA had identified the best possible locations for the new surfing only locations, and they were at the beaches of 109th -111th. The committee then had a turn to ask questions. One of the major questions was whether or not the community directly near those beaches were notified and made fully aware of the proposed changes to the beaches at Beach 109th-Beach 111th. We received resounding assurances from fellow board member and President of the Rockaway Civic, Noreen Ellis that civic gave its full support and the Civic had done outreach to gauge the community’s feelings on the changes. With the knowledge of such overwhelming support for the surf beaches by the people living on beach, the committee unanimously voted in favor of the proposal by Alex and the RCA. Just one thing! It never happened. At least not the Continued on page 16

New Med Center: A Healthy Choice For Rockaway By Michael Leboff The healthcare landscape is changing and Rockaway is changing with it. At last Tuesday’s Community Board meeting, a group of doctors and healthcare developers presented their plan to help ease the medical burden on the peninsula by tearing down the old Key Food on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and building a state-of-the-art medical complex. The new building will be the latest in a line of facilities that are shifting the trend in medical care. With so many hospitals struggling, closing, or closed, whole communities are being left vulnerable and lacking sufficient healthcare. It has been over three years since Peninsula Hospital Center closed, leaving one hospital to serve almost 130,000 people who call Rockaway home. Local ophthalmologist Dr. Mark Gelwan noticed this need and got a group of doctors together to do something about it. What makes the proposed facility unique is that it is a harmonic partnership between doctors, de-

Page 11

velopers, and the landowner. “It was a perfect storm of the right people coming together,” Dr. Gelwan said. “To get this kind of developer in this area, the whole peninsula will benefit.” Originally the plan was to repurpose the old courthouse on Beach Channel Drive as a medical facility. After things went awry with the developer of that site, the doctors partnered up with Community Healthcare Associates (CHA) to build a medical mall from the ground up. CHA is a New Jersey-based healthcare developer that has repurposed four closed hospitals in New Jersey into modern medical malls. The facility, which will likely be called The Doctors’ Medical Arts Complex, will offer a wide menu of medical services, from urgent care to imaging to dialysis to specialty surgeries. “The need is high,” he began. “This will relieve some of the stress on St. John’s.” And even though the building won’t be able accept trauma patients, it will free up room at St. John’s and other nearby hospitals by taking on patients looking for

elective or non-emergency types of surgery. For example the new complex will be able to handle major fractures, which would free up space in the emergency room at the hospital. “The new trend in healthcare is to limit beds for those patients who really need them,” he said. Not only does Dr. Gelwan think that the new medical building will serve the community’s need for more robust healthcare, but he also believes it will revitalize the area. According to their proposal, the Doctors Medical Arts Complex will create up to 125 new jobs, and Dr. Gelwan believes it will also help bring more people and businesses into the neighborhood. “Businesses flourish around healthcare,” he said. “It will boost the real estate and the local economy.” Many of the doctors who will be using the facility have practices in the surrounding area and will be bringing patients with them. “You’ll see patients from all over Southern Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island come. [The building] could potentially be serving an area of two million people.” The Rockaway Park-based ophthalmologist said that there is also a large contingent of local doctors in his group and they will make every effort to introduce the medical staff to the community. Dr. Gelwan and his team chose

DR. GELWAN Rockaway for the same reason that many others are choosing Rockaway. The community is growing at a meteoric rate and showing no signs of slowing down. “It’s time,” Dr. Gelwan said. “The whole peninsula will benefit from this.

Off Season Now Open Year Round By Katie McFadden Rockaway Beach has started to acquire its own restaurant row in the past few years, but now it’s expanding in other ways. It’s becoming a shopping destination and Off Season, an upscale lifestyle brand and boutique, is one of the new additions leading the trend. Abra Boero, a former high-end fashion industry executive, always had a dream of opening her

own store. On Saturday, June 13, her dream came true when she opened Off Season. Boero was born and raised in Manhattan, but fell in love with, and in Rockaway a few years ago. In a classic Rockaway love story, she met her now husband, Domenic Boero, on the boardwalk in the summer of 2012. “We fell in love and decided to make Rockaway our home,” Boero said. Domenic is a co-owner of Rippers, the Beach 86th St burger

concession. Now Abra has a business of her own at 92-12 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The small storefront opens up to a wide indoor shop that features vibrantly-colored products that stand out as you walk in. Many of the items are flamingo pink, vivid aqua and electric green, creating a beachy vibe with Manhattan prices. The upscale store features a women’s and men’s line with items such as sport-chic cotton jersey jumpsuits, seersucker palazzo pants with coordinating bandeaus and oversized brightly colored crinkle gauze caftans for women and damask cotton shirts for men. “I wanted to design something that was decidedly a New York beach line, so it wasn’t California hippy or Long Island preppy. It’s a mash-up of Soho in the 80’s or minimalist Japanese meets the vibrancy of Miami Beach,” Boero said of her styles. “It’s effortlessly cool, a happy cool.” Boero designs the clothing in Rockaway and it is produced in the Garment District of Manhattan. In addition to clothing, you’ll find other odds and ends at Off Season, plus a series of “all natural and organic skincare and hair

The Rockaway Times care products,” Boero says. She features two local brands including Goldie’s hair products made in Rockaway and a series of skincare products made in Astoria. She also has international products such as cold pressed coconut oil from Bondi Beach, Australia and Maui Babe tanning lotion from Hawaii. Off Season isn’t just a pop-up shop. Boero is here for the long run. “The name is a nod to the fact that Rockaway is largely seen as a seasonal destination. I wanted to really call out to the fact that there is a wonderful year-round community here. We’ll be open year round,” she said. Her clothing line will change with the seasons. “We’ll transition from summer into a proper fall and winter collection, with the same vibe of a relaxed, comfortable, easy-to-wear, mix-and-match idea that I’ve established with the summer collection,” Boero said. She also plans to add more home products like bedding, bath towels, blankets and gift items for the holidays. Although she grew up in the Manhattan fashion industry, Boero knew she wanted to open shop in Rockaway. “I contemplated opening in Manhattan, but when I came out here, everything aligned so perfectly. Rockaway is constantly developing and growing and I like the idea of being part of something new. I think there’s a real artistic cultural movement going on here and it felt right to align myself with that and bring something new to the boulevard,” she said. “I think retail really helps cement neighborhoods. There are so many restaurants here, but we just need more diversity of commerce to keep the economy on the peninsula growing. I think a lot of locals don’t like having to leave the peninsula for something and I wanted to offer something that enhances the lifestyle out here.” Boero says she received a warm welcome at her soft opening. “Everybody that came in was super supportive. The products were well received. My neighbors couldn’t have been nicer. I got a bottle of champagne from Mara at Uncle Louie G and a bottle of Prosecco from Conrad at Uma’s. It was heartwarming and solidified that this is where I want to be,” she said. Off Season will have an open backyard event space at some point this summer for community activities and Boero has plans to open a design studio and launch a website. Off Season is open six days a week, Wednesdays through Mondays, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Musical Bike Ride Adventure Rockaway Comes Alive

(Katie McFadden didn’t get a chance to ride her bicycle this week so she handed the handlebars (and space in the Rockaway Times) to another regular rider, Lou Pastina)

bike, I surveyed the local bars and music scene and was blown away by the diversity and quality I found. As a founding member of the Grayriders, the musical offshoot of the Graybeards, I get to play music in a bunch of the Rockaway bars, but seldom get out to hear what

everyone else is playing. This Saturday was an exception, as the house was empty, the chief mermaid of the house was at the Yoga Retreat with Ocean Bliss and Chief Yogi Helen Kilgallen, and the night was mine. So, first stop was the boardwalk. Caracas was in full swing at the time I got there with the band Bad Sign rocking out classic tunes, as the able bodied “Caracans” poured sangrias and served up hot arepas. Bad Sign, a three-person rock ensemble, played Santana, Dead, Van Morrison, and did a great job. They also thanked both Caracas and Katie McFadden, who usually writes this column, for being so generous. Good form by the band! Second stop was only a few blocks away as Low Tide served up Rattrap Bumpkin, a local band that had its genesis at RAA many years ago. Another three-person group, that relied on a heavy sound and an interesting song selection. Jenna Baker of Indaculture fame (another RAA product) was lured up to the stage to belt out some soul infused tunes with the band. There was a ready and able crowd at Low Tide devouring everything that the group played. Pretty cool vibe! The third concession stand,

Rippers, did not have music going on Saturday night, so I biked over to reliable Thai Rock. The back deck was packed with people, and the band Djangobilly was setting up to play. Robert, the genial host of Thai Rock, was working the crowd with that infectious smile of his, ensuring everyone was having a good time as the band hit its first tune. This was a four-person group with a trumpet player who was absolutely terrific. These guys played a blend of southwest swing that was really easy to listen to and fun. About this time the sun began its slow decent underneath the Crossbay Bridge, just as the twinkle of Coney Island winked at the patrons of Thai Rock. Next door at Bungalow Bar, there was no band but a DJ, which usually caters to a younger crowd that usually stays up much later than I do. So, back on the bike and off to 87th Street I went, to the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, a concept bar that has become a staple of the scene over the last few years. And with the arrival of the Taco man this year, it really has made waves. Very cool scene inside but alas no music, as explained to me by the erstwhile doorman. Seems that the local neighbors weren’t Continued on page 29

Bruce Hodes: Four Decades Of Karate By Sarah Boyle

World Champions Karate Center is a dojo of tradition and education. Located at 112-20 Beach Channel Drive, the dojo operates under the supervision and care of Sensei Bruce Hodes. The Karate Center welcomes anyone with a desire to learn karate, filling the mats with all ages, from pre-k to adults. The Beach Channel Drive location may have “only” been around for 20 years, but Sensei Hodes has been teaching karate in Rockaway for about 43 years, and won’t be stopping anytime soon. What began in the early 1970s in Hodes’ basement is now a successful dojo. It is a place to learn more than physical aspect of karate, but also a place to learn and understand the its background. What started with a small group practicing in Hodes’ basement, has evolved into a Rockaway institution. “We really don’t call it a business, for me its a way of life,” says Sensei Hodes. It takes only a brief conversation with Hodes to understand the truth and pride behind these words. Karate became Hodes’ “way

of life” from the moment he began his education in 1962, stepping into his first dojo in Long Island. Although Hodes was taught in several dojos, the most memorable was the Samurai dojo in Flushing, Queens. To him, “This was home,” a feeling which he tries to recreate for students in World Champions Karate Center. When the Samurai school closed, Sensei Hodes became what the Japanese refer to as a Ronin, a samurai with no lord or master, as he traveled from teacher to teacher. The closing of “his home” did not end his love for karate, and his drive to learn never stopped. Even now, as an eighth degree black belt, “it doesn’t say to me this is the ultimate that there is, because there’s never an end to learning.” This drive for education is what he tries to instill in his students and parents as he hopes to teach them the benefits of karate. Hodes finds his most frustrating challenges to be when he sees a student not trying hard, “When they bow in, whatever went on during the day is outside.” In teaching students at the dojo, they are expected to work to their greatest potential. No stu-

dent is underestimated, and size does not determine skill level. Attending several karate schools, none seemed to match the Samurai school’s intensity, and always keeping this in the back of his mind, Hodes tries to pass that same intensity on to all of his students. Regardless of age, each student receives the same training. It is not watered down. “A yellow belt adult is receiving the same training as a yellow belt child,” says Hodes, “karate education cannot be altered, and provides the opportunity for students of all ages to learn.” As Sensei Hodes says, “you cannot

reinvent the wheel of Karate.” Hodes has trained under the top black belt on the west coast, Sensei Ray Dalke, and always tries “to pass on the teaching so it doesn’t dissipate, so it doesn’t get lost.” He extends his lessons beyond Rockaway, teaching moves at other schools and at seminars. Sensei Hodes’ karate finds benefits beyond the school environment, as training makes its way to the local beach and recreation centers. He has worked to spread the benefits of karate wherever possible, using sparring to fill the void in the lives of several Vietnam veterans as well. Book Review: One Summer: America, 1927

Dear Editor, I highly recommend this nonfiction, page turning book. It depicts a remarkable confluence of events occurring in the summer of 1927 (give or take some months). Detailed are the achievements of Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, Floyd Bennett, Calvin Coolidge, and Charles Levine (a Belle Harbor resident). Several other notable Americans appear-Al Capone, Henry Ford, as well as the Sacco Vanzetti trial and the apex of Prohibition and mobster influence. Along with America’s rapid ascendance (leading manufacturer in the world) a dark side of America emerges. As Bryson writes-”it was also an age of loathing.” However, Alan Gilbert (the conductor of the New York Philharmonic) opines on the book “reading it I felt proud to be an American.” I concur as well as with the last sentence of the book which sums up the exhilaration I felt reading it”whatever else it was-it was one hell of a summer.” Ingrid Erber

Dear Editor: Participatory Budgeting of Councilman Ulrich’s discretionary funds has been a good thing. It’s too bad it couldn’t extend to other funds allocated to Rockaway projects. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy with some of the work being done. The restoration of the Bay Wall Bulkhead was absolutely necessary, and as much as I will miss the wood, I won’t miss the damaged sections that would occur with regularity… once the new boardwalk is finally done. But $25 million to keep it on time for a few P.R. events so the City wouldn’t be embarrassed. I’m sure we would have voted for three years of ferry subsidies instead. What about the Star Wars comfort stations, including two that sat in a lot across from Scholars Academy without ever being used? Four of them would equal another year of ferry subsidies. What I’d really like to know is the cost of the project that is lifting all our light poles and traffic signals 12” (I think that is being generous) above where they were before. What is that really supposed to accomplish? Eric and Phil- can you get us the numbers on this?

On the revenue side, it would be nice if we had a say over how the money taken in by the camera on Beach Channel Drive in front of the poop factory (waste water treatment plant) was spent. Then again, if that were the case we might have a bunch of ‘philanthropists’ who would make it their duty to speed by every day! Keith Goldberg

Re: Tubular Views

Dear Editor: I think this is great. Public debate to make our lives better. We need more people to join the process and work together. It’s called democracy. We are just starting to wake up and live again. I believe we should share the beach and bays just like we should share our roadways. I do not believe in separation and dividing people. Everyone should enjoy and benefit from the ocean. Use common sense. I would like to also say that we should use our beaches and bays from Far Rockaway to Breezy Point. Why are our beaches closed? Why do we tolerate no lifeguards, no boardwalks, no police, no bathrooms, no concessions stands, no jobs, and no Playlands? We should fully attend our block and civic associations, community boards, borough hall, city hall etc. It’s time that we stand up and speak up and vote for decent moral leaders who will represent us. God Bless and protect America! Get organized. Philip McManus

Elect This Kid

Dear Editor: (Re: Celebrity Charlie article) It is amazing that this young man has managed to attract the attention of many elected officials while the merchants of Far Rockaway are ignored by them even after trying to get their attention. M. Rosen

Bikes, Of Course!

.Dear Editor: Of course bikes should be allowed on the boardwalk! I thought a bike lane was part of the plan! What is going on with the Parks Department? We always had bikes ...what changed!?!? Parks is also confused about where people can swim and / or surf. Can SOMEONE get a handle on this !?!?! Daria Mainetti

West End Temple turns 75 this year, and on Saturday, June 6, more than 180 people, turned up to the Inwood Country Club to celebrate the momentous anniversary at a special gala. For those not familiar, the longtime neighborhood staple is tucked in a corner of Neponsit at 147-02 Newport Ave. “We are the home of liberal Judaism on the peninsula,” Rabbi Marjorie Slome says. In addition to religious services, the Temple has a religious school, but West End Temple is not just a place for those of Jewish faith. “We’re an inclusive congregation and we welcome everyone,” Rabbi Slome says. The Temple is home to an inclusive nursery school, led by Sherry Bernstein. The Temple has also served as a community center, often hosting meetings for things like the Neponsit Homeowners Association, Weight Watchers and AA. In recent years, West End Temple hasn’t been able to serve the community to its full extent because of damage from Hurricane Sandy. The Temple was ravaged by five feet of water. “It completely took out our sanctuary, our gym and the Sylvane room. Everything on the first floor was ruined and everything going up to the second floor floors, needed to be replaced,” Rabbi Slome said. The storm took out the building’s utilities, computers and prayer books. The Torah scrolls had been evacuated beforehand. The road to recovery has been a long one. “I thought we’d be back in six months,” Rabbi Slome said. “When the storm happened, I said, this is going to take time, patience and money and it took more time, patience, money than we expected,” co-president Amy Kargman said. The insurance money wasn’t enough and FEMA has been tricky to deal with since the Temple is a religious place. However volunteers have been helpful. “Volunteers came from everywhere. It restored one’s

faith in humanity,” Rabbi Slome said. “Our biggest supporters were from the Union for Reform Judaism. They helped replace our prayer books and people we didn’t know sent money to us.” Rabbi Slome says Amy and Lewis Kargman, were instrumental in keeping the recovery organized early on and Lori Musumeci and Rosemary Schluger have helped work with FEMA on getting funding. West End Temple did what they could with what they had early on. “Almost immediately after the storm, we continued services, even though they were held outside in a trailer. Our nursery school kept running off site in Howard Beach until we could bring it back. The first thing we did was reopen the nursery school,” Kargman said. The nursery school is at full capacity. The Temple was eventually able to open the Sylvane room where services were held until the sanctuary was repaired. The next project to tackle is the gym/auditorium. “That will provide a lot of space for a variety of activities,” Rabbi Slome said. Work still needs to be done to restore the offices in the building and other finishing touches, but the congregation remains positive. “We still have a ways to go, but I think we’re on the road to recovery. We’ve been able to have many things going on and we’re looking forward,” Kargman said. The 75th Anniversary Gala was a night to celebrate the Temple’s history and future. Among the honorees were trustee Lori Musumeci and supporters, Barbara and Mychal McNicholas. The 75th anniversary wasn’t the only milestone. Rabbi Slome was honored for her 10th anniversary as spiritual leader and Stuart Rauch celebrated his 50th year as the Temple’s music director. “It was a wonderful, fun evening. It was so nice to see everyone and we were able to raise some money for the Temple,” Rabbi Slome said. “This is just West End Temple’s first 75 years. We’re looking forward to the future,” Kargman said.

mary school, but circumstances have forced a change in plans and Challenge Prep will be opening a charter middle school in the neighborhood. Despite the change of plans, Romski and the ABTS team are continuing to do their part to keep Arverne by the Sea moving forward. They are currently working on the design for the first phase of the new Tides North neighborhood, which will be built on the northwest corner of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 69th Street. In all likelihood this new neighborhood will contain addi-

tional retail and restaurant space to go with about 220 housing units. According to Romski, the plan on how these units will be offered is still being discussed, but given the high demand, they may be market-rate rental units. Romski is hopeful that construction can begin on the neighborhood later this year or in early 2016. The ABTS team remains hopeful that they will also be able to develop some of the vacant land that borders the development into a maritimethemed area with a new hotel, boat launch, and public esplanade.

Goldfeder, Addabbo Pass Breezy Bill Extension Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and State Senator Joseph Addabbo have announced the passage of a twoyear extension to landmark legislation providing Breezy Point families with a waiver of city law requiring a lengthy approval process by the city’s Board of Standards and Appeals. The bill now awaits the signature of Governor Andrew Cuomo before becoming state law. The bill provides a two-year extension to a 2013 waiver of requirements under sections 35 and 36 of General City Law relating to rebuilding and repairing homes devastated by Superstorm Sandy. Under the extension, the city’s Department of Buildings will be allowed to continue to sign off on certain Superstorm Sandy rebuild work without the property owner needing to first obtain approval from the city’s Board of Standards and Appeals, a process that can take up to a year to complete. “With the passage of this Breezy Bill extension, we send a message

to families in Breezy Point that their struggle to rebuild has not been forgotten,” Goldfeder said. “Tremendous thanks to the board and management including Artie and Denise for their tireless advocacy and for helping us cut this red tape. I urge Governor Cuomo to sign this bill into law and ensure our families are able to rebuild their homes and their lives without delay.” “The fact that Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and I needed to introduce and pass this extender bill again shows the magnitude of the devastation Sandy brought to our constituents in Breezy Point. I am hopeful that this bill, along with other efforts undertaken by our elected officials, further helps residents fully recover from Sandy. I look forward to working with my colleague, Phil Goldfeder, and other area electeds, in assisting individuals get back on their feet in the long aftermath of this horrific storm,”Addabbo added.

The New York City Police Department is asking the public’s assistance identifying the following persons wanted for questioning in regards to shots fired at police officers within the confines of the 101 Precinct. Details are as follows: On Sunday, June 7, 2015 at 0145 hours, a plainclothes sergeant and police officer assigned to the 101 Precinct were patrolling the Redfern Houses, when they observed six males standing in front of 14-30 Redfern Ave. The officers, looking to further observe the group’s activity at that location, officers parked their unmarked Department auto across the street from 14-20 Redfern Avenue, exited their vehicle, and attempted to enter 14-20 Redfern Avenue in order to access the roof of the location. As they exited their vehicle and

walked across the street, they observed an unidentified black male wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt on the sidewalk in front of 14-20 Redfern Avenue. The male displayed a firearm and discharged the weapon three times in the direction of the officers, before fleeing on foot to an unknown location. The officers did not return fire, and took cover while requesting assistance. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website at NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577. Diary Of A Fat Man Story By Bruce Bernfeld

Z-BOY??? I am literally in a LA-Z-BOY now as I write this. I don’t move much. Quick aside: there was a great article in the NY Times recently” : THE NEW HEALTH CARE To Lose Weight, Eating Less Is Far More Important Than Exercising More But, even something that foreign to me will be made much easier with all your support. I printed some thumbnail photos of the many friends that have given me support on FaceBook. I have a set of these on the front of the fridge and I am carrying a folded set in my wallet. You 100 or so folks are my sponsors in this, and I love and thank you for your likes and motivational comments. At least FIVE people have said that maybe they will join me! This Past Week at a Glance: For those of you that want to talk about food: Fresh Raw Mushrooms are great Plain or Vanilla yogurt mixed with fresh apple pieces, walnuts and cinnamon is a great breakfast. I love V8. Plain salads are great. I skip the fancy ones for now, because the less time I spend in the kitchen, the better. By the way, I had my first cookie urge on Saturday at 3 pm. Easy to fight off because there were NO COOKIES IN THE HOUSE!!! And now the results: June 9: 288lbs June 15: 282lbs Not too shabby!!!

Rockaway finally has a Restaurant Row.... and I’m on a diet!!! Wait... I’m not on a diet. We have to stop using that word. It sounds like something that has a beginning and an end, like in “How long have you been on a diet?” And I am eating less and smarter. That is not a blankety-blank to me. It is a way of life. Another thing I discovered this week is that the worst thing to do when you are on this journey is to talk about low calorie foods and “diet” recipes and great tasting substitutes. For one thing, there are no great tasting substitutes. I think focusing on recipes and enhancing meals is a double edged sword. Gotta make it interesting people say. But I think you shouldn’t dwell on food too much. Food should become an afterthought not a primary part of your life!!! Especially when you’re fat. When you have lost some weight and the going starts getting tougher, then you can introduce imaginative recipes and special healthy snacks to keep your interest. Now, the mantra is: STOP EATING SO MUCH!!! For this column I’ll talk about food in the context of my past week so you can follow along. The next scary step for me is the dreaded EXERCISE. Never really did any. No running, no walking, no swimming, no hiking, no skiing, no biking. None. Ever wonder who the Boy is in LA-

Ask the

DOC About Probiotics By Peter Galvin, MD

Bacteria are a fact of life. We could not survive without them. The human gut contains a large assortment of bacteria known as microbiota. They account for the absorption of many vitamins and minerals and ensure the proper functioning of the GI tract. It is estimated that the number of bacteria in the human gut is 10 times the number of cells in the human body. When a child is born, their gut is populated with either the bacteria from the mother’s skin (csection) or birth canal. By age two, most children’s microbiota are the same as an adult’s. When you take antibiotics,

they may kill many of the “good” bacteria in the gut and may allow overgrowth of other “bad” bacteria such as clostridium difficile which can cause severe bloody diarrhea. This is why many antibiotics may have gastrointestinal side effects. Some studies have shown that the gut flora is still altered four years after taking an antibiotic. Many patients and clinicians use probiotics to restore the normal gut flora. Probiotics are live bacteria and have been around for many years. In the early 20th century Bulgarian peasants were thought to live long and fit lives due to their consumption of fermented milk containing lactic acid bacteria.

Probiotics have become big business – 43 percent of Americans purchase these products and the world market has been estimated to exceed $32 billion. Live bacteria can also be found in many foods such as yogurt, some cheeses, buttermilk and sauerkraut. There are hundreds of probiotics in the marketplace. Choosing the right one can be very important. Many are marketed for use in specific conditions. For example Culturelle can be used to treat infectious diarrhea and prevent traveler’s diarrhea. DanActive, Florastor and Culturelle can be used for diarrhea associated with antibiotic use and Align can be used for symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Research has found that probiotics may have use in other areas such as reducing crying time in breast-fed babies with colic, post-radiation diarrhea, reducing dental cavities, allergies and lipid disorders. Most normal healthy people do not require probiotics to maintain a normal digestive system. Those with compromised immune systems may theoretically become infected by probiotics. When selecting a probiotic choose a recognized manufacturer and pay attention to the expiration date. Also remember that dairy products have a short shelf life and require refrigeration. Always discuss probiotic use with your doctor.

Dear Old Dad A Father’s Day Tribute

Continued from page 3

homes that were in danger of catching on fire. With residents still in shock, he convinced an elderly man looking to save some jewelry and a woman looking for her prescriptions, that their lives were more important. He physically dragged them out of their homes, taking them away from the danger of the impending inferno. He was later honored with a few lifesaving awards for rescuing the elderly residents. My dad was a hero in his career. But more importantly, he’s been a hero to his three kids. He was my hero each night when he helped straighten my crooked feet as I recovered from clubfoot surgery, right before reading my favorite bedtime stories. He was the hero who pushed me around the old tire swing at Riis Park, like nobody else could. He was my hero when he showed up to a soccer game with pizza and hot chocolate for the whole team on one of the coldest game days of the year. He was my hero when I reeled in my first fish at the old pier in Breezy Point, because he had showed me how to cast the line just right. During his career, I got to enjoy the perks of being a little kid with a cop for a dad. What other kid got to go

Page 27

THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015

to Times Square on New Year’s Eve, 15 minutes before the ball dropped? What other kid could say they spent their 15th birthday sleeping over at the Statue of Liberty and making their birthday wish at the torch? What other kid can say they got to ride in a police car, without being under arrest? My dad has taught me some of the best lessons, even though I couldn’t appreciate them as a kid. “A day lost from school, is a day lost forever,” was one of his old sayings. And he stuck to it. The amount of perfect attendance awards I had through elementary school is embarrassing. I’m pretty sure I gave my whole class chicken pox, because that wasn’t a good excuse to miss class. But the Irish flu was another story. I would always look forward to St. Patrick’s Day, because it was the only acceptable day to miss class to see the parade in the City. When I got into Townsend Harris High School, one of the top schools in New York City, my dad made me go there, even though it took a good two hours to and from Flushing on public transportation. I dreaded my difficult high school years, but it made college seem like a breeze. I would never ask my dad for help

with English homework (Luckily, I got my writing skills from my mom), but if there is anything he knows, it’s numbers. And by numbers, I mean money. I know that it’s possible to survive without air conditioning or heat on some of the most brutal days, because my father (and his utility bills) have convinced me that those things are not essential. I heard a joke recently that said, “My dad is so cheap, that when he dies, he’s going to walk towards the light and turn it off.” That’s my old man. It has worked in my favor to some extent. I am confident that I will never have money problems because of the lessons my dad has instilled in my brain. As my fixer-upper man, he also helps me save. When something is broken, my dad is my go-to. When a pothole damaged my car a few weeks ago, he immediately figured out what was wrong and said he would fix it, with a wire clothes hanger. I still don’t know if that’s what he did, but my car is no longer making that expensive-sounding noise. If there is any item I need, my dad always seems to have it. He would probably be a decent contestant for that show, “Extreme Couponing,” or maybe it’s “Hoarders.” Either way, if a bomb were to ever hit, our bomb shelter with 100 cans of soup, 50 bottles of shampoo and 30 toothbrushes, was always there for us in the basement. That is, until Sandy. I think the Sanitation Department

could give my dad the award for the biggest sidewalk crap pile when they were collecting after the hurricane. The neighbors probably weren’t too impressed by it either, but they still like him for other reasons. When he goes down south to enjoy his retirement in the winter, my neighbors ask where he is and say they miss him. After all, he’s the guy who usually snowblows the whole block’s sidewalks after snow storms. But he finds ways to make it up to them when he comes back. That’s the kind of guy my dad is. Always doing favors for others, without asking for anything in return and usually putting the happiness of others before himself. I’m not sure if that’s something instilled in him by his career, or if it’s just in his nature. When it comes to his kids, his motto is, “as long as they’re happy, I’m happy.” My happiness would not be possible without my dad throughout my life. I don’t always get it right (I swear I’ll pull my car all the way into the driveway next time), and I may not say it enough, but I couldn’t be luckier to have my dad there as my hero. Happy Father’s Day to all the awesome dads out there! P.S. My dad is the worst person to buy gifts for, because if it costs money, he doesn’t want it. This article didn’t cost me a thing, but I might have to pay the price of listening to my mom ask for her article ‘til next Mother’s Day.

HONOR YOUR BODY

Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com

Summer is a time of increased physical activity, trying new things such as standup paddling or surfing or yoga on the beach or volleyball. Young, old or somewhere in between, our bodies sometimes sustain temporary injuries or discomforts. Or, we come to these new practices perhaps with something that bothers us – something that is not quite right. The important thing is to recognize the “ill” and honor it. There is nothing wrong with not doing something that a teacher says in a stand up paddle or yoga class, or whatever if it will cause discomfort. Following what your inner body “says” will serve you better than what anyone can tell you. Take a moment to take a scan of your body when you feel something is up, and it will tell you what’s going on. Feel the sensations that rise to the surface of the skin. Sometimes it is better just to rest and sit it out, just for a time. The body has extraordinary healing powers; it is said that it must be in a state of rest in order for the healing cells to get to work. This means being in the absence of stress. It’s easy to say. Stop doing, stop thinking about the things to do, stop, stop, stop. Then rest, rest, rest. Squeeze in a few hours at a time – stopping the mind, stopping the body – just rest there. Your body will take up its forces and begin to do its work. Heal. There is no timeframe – it happens when it

happens. If there is stress, nothing will happen. No healing will take place. There is a physiological reason for it, which has to do with our nervous system. Really. So if we’re in stress mode – they call it “fight or flight” – no trigger for healing will happen. We have to put ourselves in the position to reduce/eliminate stress, first step, then second step, rest. Rest by sitting, lying down, doesn’t matter and foster a calm mind and soft heart. “Your body is your business because nobody but you knows what triggers your stress responses or, equally important, how you might activate more of your relaxation responses. The power lies in your hands.” (Mind Over Medicine, How to Help Your Body Heal Itself by Dr. Lissa Rankin – check out the article at nextavenue.org) Feel the warm breezes, smell the scent of the roses and the ocean air, hear the sound of the waves, seagulls, plovers, birds, - all. Time seems to slow down in Rockaway in the summer opening a window for us to contemplate and reflect on the movement of the universe, the condition of our earth, the beauty that surrounds us and our inner landscapes from where we give thought to honoring the bodies we were given. If something ails you, take the time to make a conscious effort to de-stress and rest. Is there any reason not to?

This Week In History June 18 1873 Susan B. Anthony is fined $100 for attempting to vote for president. June 19 1987 The U.S. Supreme Court voids the Louisiana law requiring schools to teach creationism. June 20 1793 Eli Whitney applies for a cotton gin patent. June 21 1939 Baseball legend Lou Gehrig is forced to quit baseball because

of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis–a disease which wastes muscles. June 22 1970 President Richard Nixon signs the 26th amendment, lowering the voting age to 18. June 23 1860 The U.S. Secret Service is created to arrest counterfeiters and protect the president. June 24 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt pledges all possible support to the Soviet Union.

Local 5th Grader Wins Musical Bike Ride Adventure Rockaway Comes Alive National Grand Poetry Prize Continued from page 15

(And A visit from Nick Cannon)

Aiden Keane, a 5th grader in PS/MS 114’s After School Writer’s Club, organized and taught by a NYC Teacher of The Year, Joan Diehl, has been selected as “the one and only extremely talented” grand prize winner of Scholastic Reading Clubs’ World of Possible Poetry Contest. His poem “I AM A DAY DREAMER” was selected as the ONLY winner from more than 5000 entries—nationwide. For his win, entertainer Nick Cannon and Scholastic will be hosting a poetry slam in his honor at PS 114 this month, where Aiden and other talented members of The Writer’s Club will read their poetry along with Nick Cannon. This is his winning poem: I AM A DAY DREAMER By Aiden Keane You’ve heard of normal sleepers I sleep while I’m awake Going through a portal To a place that isn’t fake My ears turn off My brain shuts down I go to a place Where I have a throne and crown I’ve had battles with monsters I’ve solved hundreds of crimes I’ve had incredible powers The best of all times The world is filled with candies, Chocolate, cookies and sweets There’s a pleasure coming here

An ultimate treat A shield protects my happy place Outside’s an awful warSo many great dreams dying So that depression takes the floor Protecting this happy place Is all that I know Happiness must stand And, darkness cannot grow Childhood and happiness Joyfully joined dream’s side But those traitors, mad and grumpy Make it a bumpy ride This daydream is my castle In which, I am King I’ll never give my daydreams up Not a single thing

too crazy about the sound, so they had to cut the bands. Well, maybe get bands that the neighbors like? Just a suggestion. But the place is really cool, and I associate it with the memory of living on the block for summers in the midsixties, in bungalows with all my cousins. Great days! Who would have thought a half century later I would be biking here for a beer? But seeing that the dusk had indeed turned to night, it was time to make the turn and plot my path home. Up the block and make a right to Sayras, the wine bar. What a great surprise to find a Latin jazz band playing bossa-nova type tunes. A female sax player was playing sultry notes to go along

with the sangria. When I spoke to them they told me they play there every Saturday. Note to self, come back to hear these guys when the chief mermaid is back home. Back on the bike, and as I pass by Uma’s I hear more music and see two musicians in the front window and a crowd inside singing along. Wow, Rockaway is really alive with music. As I cross 94th street I figure it’s worth poking my head into Connolly’s for a pina colada. What better way to summon summer? And then it’s off to home. All accomplished within three hours! Pretty good night in Rockaway, but don’t tell everyone, because to riff on Yogi, if it gets too crowded here, no one will go anymore!!

The Rockaway Times

Locals Testify On Ferry Laura and Paul Deckelman testified before the City Council Committee on Finance on Tuesday, June 9, to call for putting money into the 2016 city budget to restore the Rockaway Ferry. After several hours, they got their chance:

LAURA DECKELMAN:

Fresh air, ocean breezes, open blue sky ... sea mist blowing in your face and hair ... breathtaking views of NYC ....laughter of children ... These are some of the fleeting memories of the Rockaway/ Brooklyn Army Terminal Ferry that we enjoyed for two years. It’s no secret we miss the ferry... and that’s why I’m here today, on behalf of the Rockaway Peninsula and the Brooklyn communities on the ferry run ... to respectfully ask you to re-authorize interim operations of the former Rockaway Ferry service until city-wide ferries begin in 2017 - or do anything possible to start city-wide service before 2017. The ferry ended because it was not considered cost effective for the city. According to the EDC, ridership wasn’t enough to justify the city paying large per-passenger subsidies per ride and continuing the service. The inefficient ridership resulted from mistakes made

back in 2012, when ferry service began. For instance, no accommodations were made for Rockaway’s East End commuters. People without cars had no direct access to the Beach 108th Street ferry landing, and so we lost many potential East End riders. Plus, the ferry was not promoted enough. Many people who could have been potential passengers didn’t know such a service existed. And there was no weekend service, which could have served many recreational riders, either going to Rockaway or traveling to Manhattan With such changes including easy accommodations for East End riders to and from the ferry terminal, aggressive promotion of the service, and weekend ferry service, especially in the summer to potentially attract thousands of tourists, our ferry WOULD BE cost-effective for the city. This summer, Rockaway’s economy has the potential to flourish and receive more tourists than ever because of “Lonely Planet’s” calling Queens the top tourist destination for 2015. And ... Rockaway’s beaches JUST got the top rating of all city-wide swimming beaches for 2015 from New Yorkers

for Parks. Such recognition, plus all that Rockaway has to offer as well its status as the only legal surfing beach in NYC – could create an economic and business rebirth for Rockaway, still fighting to rebound from Hurricane Sandy. The city would benefit from added tax revenues from more people spending money in the Rockaways. On a personal note, I believe in this cause enough to do everything possible to make our goal of early ferry return a reality... I rode the ferry every day for over a year, photographing the beauty of the ride to help promote the Rockaway service through social and news media ... Last summer, I spent practically every day getting petition signatures to keep our ferry permanent. Recently, I was among nine city-wide recipients of the “Hero of the Harbor” award from Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance. In conclusion, by providing easy East End ferry access, promoting the ferry service, and having weekend ferries, we would see a big increase in ridership. That would cut the theoretical “cost per rider subsidy” figure and make the ferry viable.

PAUL DECKELMAN:

I believe that I speak for many of the more than 135,000 residents of our geographically isolated Peninsula. For years, I’ve commuted to work in Manhattan via subway, bus, and while we still had it, the Rockaway Ferry. Like thousands of other Rockaway commuters, I got stranded by the giant MTA mess on Tuesday and Wednesday May 26th and 27th due to A-train power problems at Howard Beach. If anything shows the need for a reliable alternative to the subway and bus system, that was it. We all heard the Mayor’s State of the City speech in February. His idea of using the waters linking our city’s five boroughs as a transportation resource, with ferry service for isolated areas like Rockaway, is great - but the view from what we locals down on The Rock call “The Rockaway Transportation Desert” is that waiting two whole years for this means wasting those two whole years - and that makes no sense. Why re-invent the wheel? Why tear down what’s already in place, like our ferry service, and start from scratch two whole years later? Instead let’s build upon what

we had, improve it and when the time comes, make it part of the city’s larger plan. This isn’t rocket science. If the political will is there, re-establishing the ferry like we had for two years after Hurricane Sandy could be done in a matter of weeks, not months or years. Remember that the ferry was up and running within two weeks after Sandy. Yes, this was an extreme emergency situation, but it shows what can be done pretty quickly. But I’d like to correct one glaring misconception. During last year’s debate over keeping the ferry, all kinds of numbers were thrown around to justify ending it. The total annual ferry cost of about $6 million – that’s less than 1 /100 of 1% of the city’s $75 billion budget – was do-able, but we were told – right up to the end and even beyond -- that “only 400 people” supposedly rode the ferry round-trip each day, with an unsustainable supposed “$30-perride” city subsidy cost. Not so! That 400-rider figure may have been true when the ferry first started in November 2012, but by the time it ended two years later, ridership had grown to about 1,000 round-trip riders per day, or 2 ½ times the much-repeated “400-riders” figure, according to official ridership numbers that boat operator SeaStreak had to submit to the EDC under its contract rules. Do the math, and that brings the city’s per-ride-subsidy-cost down to $12, not “$30,” and that’s about what the city now pays for express bus service. And raising the ridership would bring even that figure down further. The original ferry was, unfortunately, not well-promoted, and there was no provision to make it easier for people on either the East or West ends of Rockaway to get to the ferry. The RFP for permanent ferry service includes shuttle busses to the ferry site, and hopefully, if the Council chooses to restore Rockaway’s ferry before then, the interim service could as well. The ferry’s economic benefits, both from bringing people out to Rockaway and taking Rockaway people to Manhattan, with everyone spending money in both places, are obvious - but my time is up. Let me just say in closing that if we wait two years to bring the ferry back, we waste two years.

The Rockaway Times

On The Environment By Joan Flynn

I was curious about the sick seal that had washed up on the beach here in Rockaway last March. I wondered if pollution in the ocean had been the cause of its illness. So, I called The Riverhead Foundation where the seal had been taken for rehabilitation. I spoke with Robert A. DiGiovanni, Jr. Executive Director of the foundation. He said that he could not give a definitive answer regarding the cause of the seal’s illness because he did not have enough information regarding that particular seal. He did, however, want to talk about marine debris, which he sees as a problem for all marine life. One of the most notable impacts from marine debris is wildlife entanglement. I saw that firsthand when I was walking on the beach with a friend one winter day and we came upon a Red-throated Loon that was near death because it was completely immobilized by the fishing net that it had become entangled in. We brought the loon to a wonderful veterinarian in Howard Beach. He kept the loon overnight and nursed it back to health. The next day my husband and I released that magnificent creature into Jamaica Bay. The vet felt that the waves of the ocean might overwhelm it. That vet saved the loon’s life. That experience caused me to look into the problem of marine debris. I learned on the EPA website that marine life can become entangled in derelict nets, ropes, line, or other fishing gear, packing bands, rubber bands, balloon string, six-pack rings, and a variety of marine debris. Entanglement can lead to injury, illness, suffocation, starvation, and even death. Many animals, such as sea turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals have been known to ingest marine debris. For example, whales and sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for squid, and birds often mistake plastic pellets for fish eggs. A study of 38 green turtles found that 61 percent had ingested some form of marine debris including plastic bags, cloth, and rope or string. (Bugoni et al., 2001). Every year, humans use hundreds of billions of plastic bags (100 billion in the United States alone, according to the World

Page 31

THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015

Watch Institute). Only a small percentage are recycled, while the rest are used very briefly, usually just for the short trip from shop to home, then thrown out, where they are left to fester in nature for thousands of years. Plastic debris serves to concentrate and transport chemical pollutants into the marine food web, and potentially to human diets. Plastic pollution doesn’t just hurt marine species. It’s also harmful to people. As plastic debris floats in the seawater, it absorbs dangerous pollutants like PCBs, DDT and PAH. These chemicals are highly toxic and have a wide range of chronic effects, including endocrine disruption and cancer-causing mutations. The concentration of PCBs in plastics floating in the ocean has been documented as 100,000 to 1 million times that of surrounding waters. When animals eat these plastic pieces, the toxins are absorbed into their body and passed up the food chain. Plastic bags join with other waste in the oceans to form immense expanses of garbage, effectively giant floating dumps. The most famous, known as the Trash Vortex or the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is bigger than Texas. This enormous garbage dump has been created by marine currents between Hawaii and the North Pacific. Its infamy has made it a tourist destination. Our oceans are home to most of the life on our planet and play a central role in the world’s natural systems, like regulating our climate and absorbing carbon dioxide. We are a beach community. We all see the beauty before us. We need to think about how we can help protect the oceans and the marine life that feeds us and thrills us with its’ magnificence. We can start by: Refusing plastic bags, bottles or containers. Bring your own cloth bags, drink tap water, use your own stainless steel water bottle, use glass containers. Reusing any plastic that you already have. Recycling any plastic that is not reusable. Below is a link to a site that will help us make a difference. Myplasticfreelife.com/plasticfreeguide/

Petition Posted: CROSSING GUARD NOW! An online petition, which will be sent to elected officials, has been posted by Ann Kirby-Pane. A crossing guard is needed at Beach 100 Street and Beach Channel Drive for the following reasons: • Channel View School for Research is a grade 6–12 school located on Beach Channel Drive; The school is only footsteps from the Cross Bay Bridge, one of only three ways for the 130,000 residents to leave the peninsula, and the volume traffic passing our school in the mornings leaving the peninsula is extremely heavy.

Young Journalist Gets His Start Grills Phil Goldfeder

By Charlie Ciliberti I was really excited to spend the day touring Albany with Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder. I was a little nervous but excited at the same time. I was impressed to see there were two big cameras there ready to tape our interview. Assemblyman Goldfeder told me his parents were very active in their community and they inspired him to become involved as he got older. He is from Far Rockaway and is now raising his own family here so working here is easy for him. He also mentioned that Rockaway needs better transportation for people who live here and people who don’t so it is easier to go to the city or for people who don’t live here to come over. He told me that he really likes surfing, the beach sandcastles, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, sports, biking and playing with his kids in Rockaway. He said has he worked for a lot of great people but his parents are his role models. He said that young kids in the community like me just need to get involved to make Rockaway Beach better, even if it’s going to a rally or just signing a petition, and the fact that I’m doing it means everything. Assemblyman Goldfeder said if he was not an assemblyman, he would be a teacher. He would teach math or history. But I told him we are all more interested in what he will do next. I said, “Someday we all hope you will run for mayor.

How soon do you think this will happen?” He said 2017 might be too soon because he really likes his current job, but he will see where things take him. Finally I asked him what he thinks his greatest accomplishment so far is, and he said making the toll free for anyone in the Rockaway/ Broad Channel area. But he also said with every accomplishment comes a new challenge. After our interview, Assemblyman Goldfeder took me back to the Capitol building and my brother and I got to go to a room where only members meet and discuss things before they go to the public floor to debate. Only members are allowed there, so it was really exciting that we got to go there. Then we went down to the Assembly floor, and I got to meet Wayne Jackson, the Sergeant at Arms, who has worked on the Assembly floor for more than 40 years. He was so nice and cool, and he knew EVERYONE! I got to walk around the floor where the members work and I got to press the buttons that the members use when they vote. I got to meet lots of state legislators including the new Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. The coolest part of my day was when Assemblyman Goldfeder introduced me on the Assembly floor and presented me with a citation for good citizenship. I got a standing ovation from the entire assembly! It was a great day and a really great experience.

• Beach Channel Drive is an extremely busy street especially at the times our children arrive and leave school. It one of only two roads that run through the peninsula from the Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge to Far Rockaway, and by far the busiest. • Channel View has hundreds of middle school students aged 11¬–12 crossing this busy roadway each day, with no crossing guard. The only crossing guards in the area are posted on the much less traveled Rockaway Beach Freeway, near the Scholars’ Academy. • Cars, trucks and buses speed off the Cross Bay Bridge ramp at over 40 miles per hour right in front of our school. • Recent analysis of speed camera data shows that city camera issued more than 12,000 speeding tickets

on this stretch of road in just 113 days. (See: http://project.wnyc. org/speed-cameras/). Tickets are only issued during school hours, and do not include countless additional vehicles driving at or under the speed limit. • There have been several accidents where students have been struck by cars at this location; Too often cars do not obey the law and stop when the yellow buses (even when flashing lights) are picking up and letting kids off. • Statistics from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles report that in 2010 the accidents with pedestrians and motor vehicles in Queens happened between the hours of 9AM-3PM. • There were a total of 15,682 accidents in Queens last year. 130 of those accidents were fatal. Over 13,000 of those accidents involved personal injury to pedestrians, bicyclists or drivers; thirty percent of those accidents happen near or around schools. • The Mayor’s Vision Zero has focused entirely on driver conduct, disregarding the responsibilities of pedestrians in reducing traffic fatalities. Posting a crossing guard is one of the best ways to teach our young people to exercise caution and common sense when crossing busy roads. Go to change.org and put “channel view” in the search box to find the petition.

have their voices heard. And they did! They came to the full board and they were heard. The full board heard that they would not mind surfing beaches at all, they just wanted to be heard and be part of the process. They spoke up along with several people from Arverne by the Sea who also wanted to be heard. Mr. Karinsky, in his article, pointed out how less than four people came out to publicly speak against the proposal. Yet he failed to mention that not one person from the neighborhood in question came to speak to show support for the proposal! I have no doubt that this will get done and surfing beaches will be the norm with commu-

nity support. May I also give you one more bit of advice Alex: Learn from the Jewish group from Far Rockaway! We were far from intimidated by them. Quite the contrary! We were extremely impressed. Impressed by their ability to present raw hard data of community support for their Yeshiva proposal. Impressed by the amount of supporters who came out to have their voices heard! Psssst, next time bring every surfer you know! A bit of advice for anyone who wants to get an approval from CB14 ... Don’t wait until the last meeting of the season!

project but happens to be one of my favorites. Mairon Lior who resides in New York won several awards for his work and one of the things he designed is the Umbra Conceal Floating Bookshelf (you can find it on Amazon for about $15). Lior’s floating bookshelf allows you to showcase your books as floating works of art. Just mount this bracket to the wall, slip your book on and add more books to the stack. Keep in mind that books are heavy when stacked, so you need to be sure to mount the bracket to a beam. I wouldn’t recommend stacking more than six large books or eight small books per bracket. For more of an effect, you could use multiple mounts and stagger them or arrange them around your living space in a way that expresses your personality. I have also seen these used with only one or two books and a mini bust of the author on the books. If that is something you like, you can find bust of Shakespeare, Mark Twain and more online at reasonable prices.

Rising Longevity and Your Retirement

Making Your Money Last Because of increased longevity, managing cash flow in retirement is more critical than ever. As a starting point you will need to clarify your current financial situation, as well as any significant changes you expect. Two sources will provide this information: • A net-worth statement, which provides a snapshot of your assets, debt, and cash reserves. • Your monthly or annual budget, with itemized breakdowns of your income and expenses. If you haven’t retired yet, it’s a good idea to prepare a projected budget of

New research conducted by the Society of Actuaries (SOA), a leading membership-based organization for actuaries in the United States and Canada, revealed that older Americans are living longer than previously estimated. Specifically, SOA’s data showed that since its last report published in 2000 the life expectancy of men age 65 has risen two years from age 84.6 to age 86.6 in 2014. Similarly, among 65-year-old women, longevity rose 2.4 years, from age 86.4 in 2000 to age 88.8 in 2014. Commenting on the findings, Dale Hall, managing director of research for the SOA stated, “The purpose of the new reports is to provide reliable data that actuaries can use to assist plan sponsors and policy makers in assessing the financial implications of longer lives.” What about individuals? How might this news affect the financial lives of retirees and/or the retirement planning strategies of those nearing retirement age? Those additional two years could mean that the time the typical person might expect to spend in retirement could increase by 10% or more than he or she originally anticipated. As a result, the values associated with a retirement accumulation and/or distribution plan may need to be adjusted accordingly. For example, individuals still accumulating retirement assets who had previously determined they needed a $1 million nest egg, would now need $1.1 million to finance those two added years. For someone who is in mid-stream on a retirement savings plan, increased longevity could mean boosting contributions by 20% or more to catch up. Similarly, individuals who are already retired might need to scale back their annual withdrawal amounts in order to create reserves for those extra two years.

your retirement income and expenses. Even with reasonable assumptions about investment returns, inflation, and retirement living costs, it is likely you will encounter numerous changes to your cash flow over time. Experts often recommend a monthly review of your budget, as well as a comprehensive annual review of your financial situation and goals. As you monitor your finances keep the following factors in mind, as any one of them could affect your cash flow and necessitate adjustments to your plan. • Interest rate trends and market moves may result in an increase or decrease in income from your savings and investments. • Changes in federal, state, and local tax rates and regulations. • Changes in Social Security or Medicare benefits or eligibility, as well as new rules affecting employer-sponsored retirement benefits and private insurance coverage. • Inflation and health care costs. • Life events such as marriage, the death of a spouse, or the addition or loss of a dependent may also affect your cash flow. It is worth paying close attention to cash flow, making sure you budget carefully, monitor income and expenses frequently, and take action whenever you believe that significant changes may be necessary. Rockaway Little League Post-Season Off To A Slamming Start The first week of Rockaway Little League’s 2015 post-season produced enough drama for an entire regular season. No game was more dramatic than the NY Premier Baseball Braves’ 8-7 win over the Empire Unlimited Orioles. It featured a gamesaving grand slam in the top of the sixth and a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning. The opening round Minor Boys’ matchup between the Orioles and the Braves began as a tightly played pitching duel. The Braves’ Randy Koenig and Brendan Byrne –backed by the glovework of Koenig, John Leahy and Charlie Kinzie– shut the Orioles out through five. The Braves carried a 4-0 lead into the last frame of regulation. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Orioles’ chances were hanging by a thread. Bobby Benoit turned that thread into gold, whacking an inside-the-park grand slam off of Byrne. The O’s kept the Braves off the board in the bottom of the sixth, forcing extra innings. Due to darkness, those innings would have to wait until Saturday morning at 8:00. The contest lasted three more innings with Joe Jenkusky providing solid relief for the Braves. In the top of the ninth, the Orioles plated three runs. It seemed like the decisive blow. However, this time it was the Braves who battled back to

load the bases. In an incredible reversal of fortune, Byrne stroked a grand slam off of Benoit to give the Braves a stunning 8-7 victory. In a great display of poise, the Orioles stayed on the field and won a wellplayed loser’s bracket game immediately following their grand slam disappointment. A day later, a Major Boys’ contest was nearly as dramatic. In a league where anything can happen in the post-season, it was still surprising to see two title contenders, the Metalman Sales Dodgers and the Ram Title White Sox, fall hard in the first round. Thanks to this year’s doubleelimination format, both teams had

the opportunity to bounce back in pursuit of the Major Boys’ championship. Both teams brought their A-game to the first “loser’s bracket game.” Unfortunately, only one team could survive. For much of the afternoon, it seemed that team would be the White Sox. The Ram Title crew built a 4-1 lead early. It was cut to 4-3 by Daniel Monte’s clutch two-out single in the bottom of the third inning. The Sox stayed steady and strong however, establishing a five-run lead over their next three turns at bat. The Dodgers, trailing 9-4, had one last chance. With two outs and the season in the balance, the home team managed to load the bases. Daniel Sumral rocketed a shot to left centerfield driving in two runs to draw the Dodgers to 9-6. David Berman followed with a twoRBI double to left, making it a onerun game. A double by Reid Heyman plated Berman to tie the game. Heyman followed Berman home on throwing errors, completing the Dodgers improbable come-frombehind victory. The first playoff game in the Major Girls Softball division was also a well-played and extremely close affair. The Knights of Columbus Reds, who played four games in six days, challenged the second-seeded St. John’s Hospital A’s. Margaret Murray scored on a triple and had two RBIs for the Reds. Defensively, the always speedy Maggie Brady did well in left with a nice catch on a fly. Victoria Meier secured three strikeouts and an assist to keep the Reds close. Trailing 6-4 in the sixth inning, the K of C girls had runners on second and third bases with two out. A sharp single to right plated one run but a strong throw from right forced the second runner to stop just a few feet short from tying the game and scramble to back to third. On the next pitch, St. John’s catcher made a great play on a pop-up in no man’s land to end the game. The A’s won this nail biter, 6-5. In the loser’s bracket, the Reds faced the Lifetouch Phillies one day later. Carianne Sconzo demon-

strated her bat skills, scoring once on a single and then in the bottom of the sixth pounding a three-run homer, ending the game and giving the Reds a 10-8 win. Giana Grillo made her contribution scoring twice on two hits, while Lauren Lynch excelled on defense with four solo outs at second base and four throw outs to Margaret Murray at first. Noelle Cook came in as the Reds closer to help hold the Phillies down. The coaches can thank the competitive back and forth of this game for their additional gray hairs! The Reds advanced to play the Ram Title Royals, the regular season division winners who were upset in the first round by the Bartoli Chiropractic Orioles. The Reds finished their regular season against these same Orioles, dropping an 18-16 slugfest. Highlights for the Reds: Lauren Lynch with a two-run homer; Jillian Ortega scoring on two singles and getting one ribbie; Grace Boyle scored on a single and notched two RBIs; Hannah Chasnoff who scored on a double and got two RBIs; and Isabella Youssef hit well and pushed two RBIs. In the aforementioned 12-1 opening round upset of the Metalman Sales Dodgers, R.F. Realty Orioles’ pitchers James Resker, Timmy Mills and Sean Peter Mullen held the highpowered Dodgers offense to a single crossing of the plate. James Resker (3-5, 3 RBI’s), Tommy Bennet (3-4, 2 RBI’s), Kiernan Smith (2-4, double, 2 runs) and Thomas Resker paced the attack for the O’s. Pat Powderly was sharp in the field. The next day, the Orioles faced off against the Ozone Pest Management Reds who had upset the White Sox in the first round. This battle of upstarts went to the Birds, 10-5. Thomas Resker pitched 42/3 innings of shutout ball and helped himself with the bat, going 3-3 with a two-run homer. Danny Endall was 2-3, including a basesloaded triple. Sean Peter Mullen was 2-4. The Reds came to life in the fifth inning, scoring five runs with two outs and closing the gap to 7-5 going into the final frame. The Reds had momentum. The Orioles were looking for insurance, which they got from Kiernan Smith, James Resker and Thomas Resker…all of whom stole home. Donato Sommerville closed it out for the victory. Timmy Mills played a great first base.

THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015 We’d like to thank the Knights of Columbus Rockaway Council 2672 and Mike Keller for inviting us. And we look forward to going to next year’s fluke tournament. Here are this year’s winners: 1st place: Roland Wertze (the 3rd) -3.85 lbs 2nd place: Tricia Kohler- 2.20 lbs 3rd place: Tom Elges- 2.15 lbs Congratulations to the winning anglers, well done in those windy conditions. We checked in with the rest of our fishing stations in the Rockaway area and this is what they had to report.

AHOY ROCKAWAY !

Bernie Matzen of Oceanside was drifting east of the Atlantic Beach Bridge and he caught some short fluke at 17” and 17.5” (two throw backs). Bernie also landed a 10-lb skate, which he also threw back. Tom’s Wave service station reports that the bridges were quiet this windy weekend, but he did see a lot of large sea robins being caught. Dawn at Big Ron’s bait and tack reports it being a bit quiet, but she did send us a picture of a large bass that was taken. Well that’s it anglers, until next week!

Water Temperature: 66*F Rockaway Inlet Well this Saturday was the First Annual Knights of Columbus “Monsignor William F. Burke” Rockaway Council 2672 Fluke Tournament. Paul Tarramino (Pauly T.) was nice enough to offer himself as a guide and his boat for us to use to enter the tournament. We met up with Knights of Columbus organizer Mike Keller for a quick Captains Meeting the night before the event. Saturday started out as a spectacular day but, soon a brisk wind out of the north arrived blowing a steady 18 knots with gusts up to 24 knots. Pauly T. has good knowledge of Jamaica Bay and skillfully ma-

neuvered his boat (16’ C-Hawk) through the “Cow pasture” flats just west of the Cross Bay Bridge on the north side in Broad Channel. The winds picked up a bit from there (not even in the weather forecast) and the drift for the fish was too fast. We tried adding more weight (sinkers), but reaching the bottom became difficult. We even had white caps in the bay between the bridges. We tried for a few hours, but then it just got too windy and choppy, so we headed in. We did have a good time though, and hey, that’s how fishing goes. It’s still better than a day at work.

THREE WINNERS.

The Integrity of Baseball? By Don Kennelly

The phrases “the integrity of the game” or “the integrity of baseball” are frequently used by baseball executives or the Commissioner of Baseball when discussing any problems or potential scandals affecting the game. Yet, they themselves are guilty of enforcing policy with regard to baseball statistics and records that can accurately be described as destructive of the integrity of baseball. The use of performance enhancing drugs or “PEDS” has been a major scandal for the last 25 years.. The use of “PEDS” by players is illegal and viewed as “cheating” so much so that players found guilty of it have been punished (usually by lengthy suspensions without pay). It would therefore be just, appropriate, and protective of the integrity of the game that the records of players achieved while they were cheating by using the illegal PEDS not be counted as legitimate records. In spite of these facts, MLB and many announcers and commentators continue to view these records (HRs, Hits, RBIs, etc.) as legitimate records. In so doing, they do a disservice to the game and its greatest

bona fide stars such as Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Roger Maris, Ken Griffey Jr. and many others. We are reminded of this injustice, in New York, by the current happenings involving Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod), of the N.Y. Yankees. He has publicly admitted the use of PEDS for the three years period 2001-2003 and reportedly admitted similar use of PEDS to the government from 2010-2012.. In that 2001-2003 period when he used PEDS, he recorded 156 home runs, 569 hits, and 395 RBIs. For the 2010-2012 period, he had 64 home runs, 370 hits and 287 RBIs. In other words, approximately one-third of the home runs, hits, and RBIs attributed to him come in the time period when he was using PEDs. Baseball reporters and officials continue, however, to announce that he passed Willie Mays in home runs or Babe Ruth in RBIs as though these records are legitimate. This is simply a travesty and manifestly unfair. There are numerous examples illustrative of the unjust and sometimes contradictory nature of record keeping by MLB. We need only to look at one or two to confirm that fact. One involves the

issue of A-Rod surpassing the RBI total of Babe Ruth. The facts of the matter are, as already shown, ARod’s records are tainted and dishonest. Additionally, Babe Ruth had over 200 RBIs that baseball will not give him official credit for. This is so because RBIs did not technically become an official record until 1920 and Ruth had these over 200 proven RBIs before their recording became “official.” It is puzzling indeed to try to comprehend why MLB would take such an unreasonable stance. A second example involves the single season Home run (HR) record. For a century only one man ever hit more than 60 home runs in a season. However, when Maris hit 61 HRs in one season, baseball officials felt compelled to put an asterisk next to the record in order to note that it occurred in a season that was eight games longer than the season in which the previous record had been set. In a four year period

from 1998-2001 the 60 home run mark was exceeded six times. The three players who did were Mark McGwire (2x), Sammy Sosa (3x), and Barry Bonds (1x) - all of whom either admitted PED use or tested positive for PEDS. Despite this baseball officials continue to allow their dishonest records to stand as if they were legitimate. It is time for MLB officials to do the right thing and publicly categorize the records of PED users as tainted and invalid. Those who vote on candidates for entry to the Baseball Hall of Fame have already done so by emphatically denying the candidacy of other known PED users such as Rafael Palmeiro, Sosa, McGwire and others. Baseball officials should follow suit if they truly have any concerns about the integrity of baseball. (Don Kennelly is a retired Professor and Attorney. He is a lifelong baseball fan and resident of Breezy Point).
