Sanders Slams NY Post Report SAYS HE’S GOING TO US ATTORNEY
State Senator James Sanders
On Sunday, February 7, The New York Post reported that Malisa Rivera and Marion Moses filed a civilian crime report with the office of Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara regarding State Senator James Sanders Jr. The couple alleged that Sanders offered them $1.7 million in taxpayer money to fund their operation — then demanded a $250,000 kickback. Rivera and Moses are with Culinary Kids, a group trying to receive funding for an urban farm in Far Rockaway and a variety of initiatives including teaching people in low income areas “how to cook for
The statement said Sanders was going to US Attorney Preet Bharara’s office and offering to take a polygraph to clear his name adding that he wants “the money seeking group” (Culinary Kids) to take a polygraph as well. “These specious allegations cannot go unanswered. There are laws afoot and one of them is called perjury,” Sanders said. “We are calling upon U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara to enforce the law on perjury, the law on giving a false statement.” The kickback incident was alleged to have taken place while Sanders was still a City Council Member. (He is now a New York State Senator). In December 2015, Sanders announced that he would challenge Rep. Gregory Meeks for a congressional seat. The Sanders statement did not allude to another allegation in the Post. Former Sanders
themselves and their families.” The report also says Sanders threatened to fund the Rockaway Youth Task Force instead. Culinary Kids and The Rockaway Youth Task Force have been at odds over community garden spaces. According to The Post, the couple also said that they are now being blacklisted by City Councilman Donovan Richards, who was Sanders’ Chief of Staff when the alleged shakedown took place. On Monday, Sanders issued a statement refuting the allegations in the Post story. “I believe this a politically motivated, slanderous hit piece,” Sanders said. “We shall have our day in court. The money seeking group will have to answer for their perjury and the puppet masters responsible for using them to smear me will have to answer for their actions.”
staff member, Michael Duvalle, said his old boss funneled money through the Margert Community Corporation, a nonprofit in Far Rockaway that says of itself: We are currently involved in study and plans that hope to see new, decent and affordable housing built in our communities. “That’s where he had his money. Whenever anyone needed money, he said, ‘Get it from Margert,’ ” Duvalle, told The Post. The Rockaway Times asked Senator Sanders about this and a spokesman said: “We know nothing of any allegations. Law enforcement has not contacted us.” Joe Barden, executive director of Margert said, “Margert Community Corporation exercises the highest level of stewardship over our city, state and federally funded programs. We saw that story and don’t know why we’re being pulled in.”

Flooding Destroys Cars, Causes Sandy Flashbacks By Katie McFadden
Residents of Rockaway, Broad Channel and other coastal areas woke up on Monday and Tuesday to scenes that caused Hurricane Sandy flashbacks. Water, from few inches to more than two-and-a-half feet, inundated certain blocks on the peninsula and several side roads of Broad Channel, mostly due to an astronomical high tide during the new moon. Many making their morning commute were surprised to find roads turned into rivers when the first high tide rolled in at around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, without warning. Emergency services and local offices received calls of heavily flooded streets all across the peninsula, before it receded around 9 a.m. Unlike Hurricane Sandy, the water didn’t roll down the streets from the bay or ocean. Much of it came from storm drains. According to the Office of Emergency Management, the surprise flooding was caused
by a high tide. “In the end, it was just a higher tide than what was originally forecasted. Minor coastal flooding tides were predicted but a higher tide turned it into moderate flooding,” Omar Bourne, of the NYOEM press office said. According to the National Weather Service, the tide was up to two-and-a-half feet higher than normal. According
to the American Littoral Society-Northeast Chapter, whose Broad Channel office was flooded, the abnormally high tide was due to a combination of the new moon, an offshore storm in the Atlantic and a northeast wind. According to Councilman Ulrich’s office, the water came up from the street due to the increased height of the water ta-

ble, likely caused by last week’s snow storm. “It may be that the rising water table and tides saturate the ability of the storm drain system to drain,” Robby Schwach of Ulrich’s office said. “When this happens, there is no place for the water to exit since the bay is at high tide as well, and the water cannot go down into the storm drains.” Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder said protective measures likely wouldn’t have helped in this situation. “It’s unfortunate, but I urge people not to jump to conclusions. A higher bay wall, jetties or higher dunes wouldn’t have helped. The water came up from the ground and simply inundated us with water from beneath,” Goldfeder said. Following the morning flooding, Mayor de Blasio advised residents of Queens and Brooklyn that coastal flooding could be expected through Wednesday morning. The evening tides were not as severe as the morn-

A Far Rockaway street will be renamed for fallen NYPD officer Randolph Holder, according to a report by DNAInfo. The corner of Collier Avenue and Briar Place, near where Holder had once lived in Far Rockaway, will be named Det. Randolph Holder Way. Holder, promoted to detective posthumously, was shot and killed while on duty in East Harlem on Oct. 20, 2015. Holder was living in Brooklyn at the time of his death, but the 33-year-old, originally from Guyana, first lived in Far Rockaway after coming to the country. He followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were both police officers, and had been working for the NYPD for five years. The street naming was approved along with 41 others by City Council last week. Holder’s street renaming was co-sponsored by City Councilman Donovan Richards and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

Speaking In Tongues ¿Dónde estå el baùo? That’s Spanish for, where’s the bathroom, for those of you who are limited in your foreign language skills. Ordering a margarita with a Spanish accent doesn’t count as being fluent. I’m hesitant to practice my espaùol too much. I’ve got a trip ahead of me and I’m thinking it might be best to stay stupid. I figure there’s a certain advantage to mangling the language, like I’ve been known to do. I’m still somewhat traumatized by my high school experience. It was freshman year and my Spanish teacher was Mr. Romeo. On the first day he warned us: It’s Ro-mayo not Romeo. Not Romeo as in Juliette. He rolled those Rs like a tommy gun. Rrrrrrrromayo.
He went around the room asking students to say their names preceded by “me llamo. If a kid’s name was John he’d say, “Me llamo Juan. Or another kid, Joseph, would say, “Me llamo Jose. Mr. Romeo looked at me said: Boy-lay. I was frozen. I didn’t know what he was saying or asking. Boy-lay? Or was that Borlay ? I tried repeating it back to him. Bore-la? The rest of the class started laughing. I had no idea why. The teacher, though, looked annoyed. I said it again, as best I could. Bor-luh. More laughs came. Some kids had looks like they couldn’t believe I had such nerve. Mr. Romeo glared at me then moved on to other kids. He’d say Smith, and the kid would say “Me llamo Pedro. And then it dawned on me. Boy-lay was how he pronounced my last name. He was calling on me to give
my first name. He was (in theory) saying Boyle and I was supposed to say, “Me llamo Kevin. Boy-lay? I mean, I grew up in Brooklyn. If somebody said Berle I knew they were talking to me. But Boy-lay? After going around the class, he called on me again. Boylay. I guess I was rattled. I tried to say Me llamo Kevin. I don’t know how it sounded. But it brought down the house. Even Mr. Rrrrrrrromay seemed to smirk. The very next day my freshman schedule was rearranged and I found myself in a Spanish For Dummies class. The new Spanish teacher bore an uncanny resemblance to the Frito Bandito. These many years later Spanish is on my mind again. I’m tensing up a little about an upcoming trip to Colombia, South America. It probably wasn’t a good idea for me to watch Narcos, the series about Pab-

lo Escobar, the drug lord, responsible for so much murder and mayhem in the country. I mean, I know it’s a different place now. I know crime has dropped drastically since they wiped out Escobar and some of the other drug cartels but the State Department says kidnapping is still a threat. “Terrorist groups and other criminal organizations continue to kidnap and hold civilians, including foreigners, for ransom. Great. I saw some advice somewhere. If people are trying to kidnap you, be loud, scream and yell that you are not going with this person(s) voluntarily. Fight, bite, kick and scratch. Yeah, well, I’ve got another weapon. I figure I’ll speak to them in Spanish and make them crack up. Oh, and I won’t mention Steve Harvey. Anyway, with me luck? Kidnappers won’t catch me but the Zika Virus will.

Beach Channel Redesign Idea

Snow covered boardwalk ed peeking through allowing Katie benches sit serenely soon after McFadden to grab this shot which snowfall last week. The sun start- proved quite popular online.
That Crane Shouldn’t Be There
We find this to be an interesting picture: a crane coming out of
the water. Upon review we have to ask: what the hell is it doing in the water? This huge apparatus fell off a barge into the water off Amstel Blvd and Beach 73rd Street a couple of years ago. We would guess The City, the Coast Guard, or some alphabet agency (The EPA, The DEC) would get after the owners to get this hulking thing out of there.
Although he admits he’s no city planner, Peter Brady’s got an idea that we like. How about redesigning Beach Channel Drive (currently closed because of hazardous conditions). Brady says, create a gentle curve in the road to
naturally slow traffic going toward Scholars’ Academy and then on the north side of the curve you create a welcoming ferry landing with park land and viewing areas. There would still be plenty of space to create parking.

***** A documentary film, five years in the making, will have its world premier on Thursday, March 17. Saving Jamaica Bay by Dan Hendricks will open as part of the Queens World Film Festival. We’re quite interested to see the final cut. Jamaica Bay is indeed a crucial part of our lives with its great impacts on the environment and economy. ***** If you want to enjoy serenity on the streets plan to walk around during the Super Bowl next year. Streets in Rockaway were eerily empty. Speaking of the Super Bowl, we expect Peyton Manning to retire. As some noted he gave a tip when he told post game interviewers that he planned to drink a lot of Budweiser. That kind of commercial plug seems like he’s ready to kick back!
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2016 ***** Probably more to come of this. The New York Post reported that Malisa Rivera and Marion Moses of Culinary Kids in Far Rockaway filed a civilian crime report with the office of Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara regarding State Senator James Sanders Jr. The couple alleges Sanders offered them $1.7 million in taxpayer money to fund their urban farm operation — then demanded a $250,000 kickback. Sanders responded by calling it “slanderous” and said he’d offer to take a lie detector test in the US Attorney’s office. ***** There was a great turnout at the 16th Annual Rockaway Plunge as hundreds of people jumped in the 42-degree water in Breezy Point. The event raises awareness and funds for cystic fibrosis charities and will benefit 18-year-old Annie McMahon who is in need of a lung transplant. ***** Count us among those who will wait and see. The Mayor announced a $91 million investment plan for downtown Far Rockaway
Page 7
in his State of the City speech. A transit hub, improved streets and an overhaul of the Sorrentino Center and the shopping center on Mott are part of the plans. We’ll see, we’ll see. We prefer to congratulate politicians after they do something, not on the basis of a promise. ***** A couple of people have suggested redesigning Beach Channel Drive (now closed because of a collapsing road) so that it goes through the National Grid lot (the old MGP site). The current street would be used for a ferry terminal possibly with shops and other amenities. ***** High tides caused massive flooding throughout Rockaway and Broad Channel on Monday morning. But if you were in your house and didn’t venture out until after 10 a.m. you probably didn’t see much because a lot of flooded streets had drained. Many problems were caused by overflowing storm drains. ***** What’s happening on Beach 116th Street? Well, there will
be a new pub/brick oven pizza place. Details to follow. The new bagel place is supposed to open mid-March (though all businesses are at the mercy of red tape, sadly). And as far as the theater goes, nothing yet. Owner Michael Konig said he’d have a better idea come February but so far nothing has been decided yet. ***** Serene edges out crazy. Katie McFadden took a photo of boardwalk benches covered in snow and posted the serene picture on Facebook (see Page 6). It reached more than 33,000 people and was “liked” by more than 1,400. Then a couple of photos we posted with crazy street flooding reached more than 20,000 (see Page 37). ***** February is a busy month for travel with President’s week vacation coming up. Aggie Batista of CruiseOne, who will start operating under a new brand called Dream Vacations in April, offers her professional input on February travel tips in this week’s paper.

The Lazer Speaks A SHADOWY FIGURE
By Lou Pastina
(While the cat’s away…. Kevin Boyle is out of the country – so it’s a good time to slip this column in.) We all know Kevin Boyle. He is the owner of this newspaper; was once the editor of The Wave; and a co-founder of the Graybeards. But beyond that it gets a little murky! Let me explain, although I recently retired, Kevin Boyle is now technically my boss and I risk being fired from the only job I have. But damn, this is important stuff, as many of you have come to rely on this column for important information news. I was at the Graybeard dinner January 30th, and ap-
plauded the well-deserved awards to Monsignor John Bracken and to Gerry Casey. I was seated off to the side with a table of band and Yogi friends, that’s how hip I am, when I noticed that Kevin Boyle was seated behind me close to the wall at another table. My mind drifted back to my first meeting with this mysterious figure and I began to wonder to myself “who is this man?” mostly because the music was loud and at this age I can’t even fake that I am truly capable of conversation. It was back in the 1980s when my wife, prior to her current mermaid status, was very much into civic service things. After one meeting with the fiery proponents of a new civic organization, she informed me that I would be attending the meetings in her place. It seemed that our neighbors west had two civ-
ic organizations at the time, one for Belle Harbor and one for Neponsit, and neither would accept Rockaway Park as an add on. And so a new civic organization was formed and I was brought in to write the by-laws and things of that nature. Mr. Boyle seemed closely involved in this endeavor. He watched from the shadows, influencing to the good, this new organization. As for me, given the revolutionary nature of the organization at that time, I quickly suggested that the by-laws require you to live within Rockaway Park to be in the organization, and then quickly moved just outside the borders to safety! But Mr. Boyle seemed to be keeping his eye on me, as a curious shoulder injury befell a certain Belle Harbor plumber under cloudy circumstances, and an invitation to play
in the Graybeard basketball league came my way. Somehow I wound up on Mr. Boyle’s brother’s team. His brother, a superior basketball player in every sense, was, I think, nothing more than a spy, tasked with keeping track of me. When tragedy came to New York and those basketball players banded together to form that honorable organization know as the Graybeards, it was Mr. Boyle who helped lead the charge. He cited my involvement in the Rockaway Park Civic Association and invited me to be on the Board to help write the by-laws. But it was Mr. Boyle who was always asking the right questions, just like he did after Sandy, and continues to do today. My focus then became music, but once again the long, shadowy reach of Mr. Boyle
Continued on Page 9
The Rockaway Times
LAZER Continued from Page 8 suggested that another brother join our merry band of music makers, and it was indeed a good fit. But always the thought, yet another Boyle to keep an eye on me? Now you may think me paranoid, but as they say, that alone doesn’t make you crazy. So here I was Saturday night, with too many faces I knew about me to actually focus on any one, that I buried my head into the evening’s program. And on one of the first pages was a list of all the past honorees over the last fifteen years. Some great men and women were on that page, but not the man behind me next to the wall who had participated in so many good things in this neighborhood over the years. When I retired last year, this same Machiavellian figure arranged for a “vacation” for a fellow writer at this newspaper, and then reached out to ask me to write a column in her absence. And then recent-
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2016 ly, after all these years of not playing basketball, when the group was one man shy, it was Mr. Boyle that called to ask me to play, not knowing that injury awaited me. Or did he? So what is it with this guy who waits in the shadows doing good deeds without reward? Well I can only think of his saintly mother, who hails from Greenpoint, a neighborhood of some distinction, to explain this phenomenon. She is as they say in the Wizard of Oz, “a good deed doer”. If you pick up the New York Post you will see a picture of Alexander Hamilton, its founder, but honestly can you find Kevin Boyle’s picture in his paper? Facebook? Nothing, just some allusion to some long ago CHSSA championship, that may or may not have happened. Really, just like that shadowy figure in the X-Files, the cigarette man, he stands off to the side, pulling strings, some would say for good, but believe me, we need to keep an eye on this guy.

BOOM! Estate Planning for Baby Boomers Death and Taxes For Celebrities, Too While it is important for many reasons for all adults to have a Last Will and Testament in place, it is a fairly common misconception that having a Last Will and Testament is enough. Having only a Will in place does not help to avoid Will contests if there are disinherited family members; the Will document is public record, and there are estate tax savings measures that cannot always be accomplished in the Will alone. Estate planning with Trusts can accomplish these goals for high net worth estates, or complicated family situations. No one’s lives are more fascinating to us than those of celebrities, and we often read about the circumstances surrounding their deaths, and the value and distribution of their estates. Let’s take a look
at some notable examples that will illustrate that estate planning should often involve more than just a Last Will and Testament alone. Frank Sinatra passed away in 1998, leaving his affairs in apparent good order. Old Blue Eyes’ Last Will and Testament left the bulk of his estate to his spouse (in excess of $3.5 million plus all royalties) and smaller bequests to his children from his first marriage ($200,000.00 each). So, why do we say this was leaving his affairs in good order? Mr. Sinatra kept much of his estate planning private by making lifetime gifts to various people, and more importantly by establishing trusts for the distribution of his estate outside of the Will, and out of view from the public eye. Mr. Sinatra’s lawyer most likely advised him that Trusts are

private agreements, and can serve to minimize taxes, protect the assets from Will contests, challenges, creditors, among other purposes. In 2007, Anna Nicole Smith passed away unexpectedly, with a poorly drafted Will in place. Her Will left everything to her son Daniel, and specifically disinherited all other children, even those born to Ms. Smith after the execution of the Will. Unfortunately, Daniel predeceased his mother by one year, and the Will was never rewritten. Since the Will had no contingent provision, the distribution of the estate was delayed, and distributed according to the California law for intestacy (estates with no Last Will and Testament). If Ms. Smith had visited an attorney and drafted and signed a new Will after her son’s death, or in the alternative, if she had
established a Trust with alternate provisions, the lengthy and expensive publicized court proceedings could have been avoided, and Ms. Smith’s wishes would have been clearer. James Gandolfini met his untimely demise in 2013. Mr. Gandolfini’s Will and estate plan were the subject of much criticism at the time. The Will was written to leave the bulk of the estate (80%) to Mr. Gandolfini’s sisters and his child. While bequests to a spouse are tax free, bequests to other family members are subject to estate tax, of approximately 55 percent. Many experts debated over whether this was prudent estate tax planning. It should be noted, however, that it is possible that Mr. Gandolfini’s estate planning included trusts,

BOOM! Continued from Page 12 which would not be public knowledge. If that were the case, and the bulk of the estate passed through the trusts, the amount left to pass through the Will may have been considerably less than the value of his estate, and 80 percent of that may even have been too little to be subject to estate tax, contrary to the beliefs of the critics. This year we lost music icon David Bowie (real name David R. Jones). The musician’s Will was recently submitted to Surrogate’s Court in Manhattan. The Will provides that the real estate (valued at $4 million in 1999) and fifty percent of the rest of the estate (valued at approximately $100 million) is to be left to Mr. Jones’ spouse, and the other fifty percent of the estate is to be divided in two shares to children from a prior relationship. Additionally, the Will instructs that $2 million dollars be left to a personal assistant, and $1 million dollars to a nanny. From this
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2016 information it would appear that approximately $50 million of the estate will be subject to estate taxes. However, as described above, it is likely that advanced estate planning with trusts was completed, and perhaps the plans included tax saving measures for those assets that passed outside of the Last Will and Testament. Obviously most of us don’t have the multimillion dollar estates that these celebrities had. It is, however, just as important to us to keep our affairs private, avoid delays in our families inheriting from us, and to avail ourselves of planning to minimize taxes. An individual plan taking into consideration one’s family circumstances, value of the estate and tax considerations is important in developing an estate plan, if necessary with trust planning that best suits our needs. February Travel Tips with Aggie By Katie McFadden
With February being a busy travel time due to the school break, we had a Q&A session with local travel agent Aggie Batista regarding February travel tips. Batista currently works for CruiseOne and will be launching under a new brand called Dream Vacations in April. When is the best time to book a vacation? “It’s always a great idea to plan ahead of time for a vacation. Planning ahead gives you the best rooms and price availability. Right now, between January and February is what we call wait season in the travel industry. This means that the best offers you can find for advanced planning is now. In order to escape for next year’s snow, its great to look now. Travel professionals can also assist with last minute deals
that people can also take advantage of.” Since kids are off for Presidents’ Week, what are some of the best kid-friendly destinations? “The top three destinations for family resorts with the best values are Mexico, Dominican Republic and Jamaica. I recommend all-inclusive resorts for exceptional values. Parents can budget and have peace of mind. With all meals and motorized sports included, families don’t have to worry about food and entertainment. Through our partnership with Apple Vacations, we have exclusive flights from JFK Airport to Cancun’s Riviera Maya where you find Mexico’s best resorts and beautiful white beaches. These exclusive flights offer amazing savings for an entire vacation package.

Between The Bridges But I digress…back to the story. “Enough of this nonsense…” Barbara thought to herself. She reached down and lifted the box high into the air whereupon her hallway was immediately filled with a blizzard of loose feathers accompanied by a cacophonous clucking and the sight of a live chicken manically running around her hallway, albeit with its head still on! Barbara immediately sized up the situation and sprinted back upstairs to reheat her coffee as she called her husband Terry at work and quickly advised him “Don’t bother picking up the steaks on the way home, we’re having chicken for dinner!” Although the mystery of who dropped off the live chicken at the Horn’s residence remains unsolved until this very day, the point of these stories is that, depending on where you live, one neighbor’s concerned police complaint is another neighbor’s welcomed dinner menu change, especially in Broad Channel! Broad Channel – why would anyone want to live anywhere else?
onds, the box slid unaided across the hallway in the opposite direction several more inches. Barbara stared at the box, scratching her head, wondering what could possibly be inside. Barbara again carefully approached the box and poked it with her finger whereupon she was immediately greeted with a strong return poke from the interior of the mysterious carton. Before I proceed any further with this story, there are a few things you have to know about Barbara and the entire Horn family. They had a dog named “Baby Bear,” which weighed in at some 200+ pounds and upon whose back you could safely land a small helicopter. Her son Chris’ bedroom was occupied by a gargantuan lizard, which (I believe) was rented out to Steven Spielberg for his first Jurassic Park film three years earlier in 1993. At the same time Barbara’s daughter, Erin, was already well on her way to becoming the “Pit Bull Whisperer” she is today long before celebrity dog behaviorist, Caesar Milan, became a household name.

Strange things are afoot down in Osceola County, Fla., where several residents have complained that someone has been depositing catfish in their mailboxes. One resident in particular thinks that although this could simply be neighborhood kids playing a prank, she is also very worried that the presence of a catfish in her mailbox could be an omen of more sinister things to come. “I was kind of in shock that somebody would do that, it’s not something you see every day….” the resident stated, adding “…it starts with a catfish in the mailbox but you never know where this kind of thing could escalate to.” The resident was so concerned that she stated she would make an official police complaint in the hopes of identifying the perpetrator(s) before things got out of hand. Before you dismiss the above story as simply another amusing tale emanating from our southern land of walkers, motorized wheelchairs and golf carts, you should know that some 20 years ago Broad Channel
was the site of a similarly strange occurrence. Back in 1996 while enjoying her morning cup of coffee in the kitchen of her Broad Channel residence on Cross Bay Boulevard, Barbara Horn’s serenity was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell. Somewhat annoyed, Barbara set aside her coffee and walked downstairs to her front door where she discovered that someone had deposited an oversized cardboard box in the hallway. Stepping around the box, Barbara opened the front door and stepped outside in an effort to determine who had delivered it but there was no one to be seen. Closing the door behind her, Barbara stepped back into her hallway and was surprised to discover that the box had moved several feet from where she had first observed it. Aware of the fact that her morning coffee was growing cold upstairs, curiosity nonetheless got the better of Barbara and she decided to investigate. Carefully approaching the box, she nudged it several inches along the floor with her foot and stepped back. After a few sec-

We also have two great cruise ports close to home, Manhattan and Bayonne’s Cape Liberty Port, which offer different cruise lines and destinations with amazing children’s programs. The cruises rotate, but currently from Manhattan, we have the Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Gem. From Cape Liberty, we have Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas doing three night to 12 night cruises. If you’ve never cruised before of want to experience a different cruise ship, on April 17, I’m offering a luncheon, which includes a full ship tour of staterooms and public areas on the Norwegian Breakaway for $30. Finally, one of the great, amazing places to vacation with family is Disney World. There are a variety of resorts and meal plans for every budget. It’s a beautiful, magic place for everyone.” What are some tips you can offer for those traveling with kids for the first time? “Plan ahead and partner up with a good travel professional to help plan your family’s dream vacation. Involving children in the planning process creates a more memorable experience. Show them available activities so they can choose what they want to do. It’s so much fun when you plan your vacation with your kids.” With Valentine’s Day coming up, what are some romantic destinations or ideas you’d recommend for couples? “Apple Vacations’ Secret Resorts and Spas offers one of the most spectacular settings for romance. Taking advantage of this three day Valentine’s Day weekend due to President’s Day, you can escape into sensuality in Jamaica, the Bahamas or Dominican Republic in as little as three hours from JFK Airport. For those who prefer to be more active, you can do a romantic getaway to Europe. In every destination, there is a wonderful romantic getaway. In every place, you can find a resort that can give that feel for adults, or on any cruise. For educators who can only travel during school breaks,
The Rockaway Times but may want to avoid large crowds, or family-friendly destinations, where are some of the best places to go? “One of the best trips is to really bring a history book to life by exploring many places in Europe. Explore one of the best-preserved monuments in Rome- The Colosseum. Another one I visited that I’ll never forget for its architecture, is the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. During the summer months, there’s so much to experience in Alaska, like a salmon bake on a glacier or the Anchorage Museum.” What are some of the benefits of traveling by cruise as opposed to flying somewhere? “On a cruise, you have the opportunity to visit multiple destinations on a floating resort. You pack and unpack once. There are exceptional serve levels, all different kinds of amazing entertainment, different staterooms, suites and a variety of restaurants.” What would you say is the best mode of transportation for families with kids? “There is none. It’s whatever the family wants to do. Whatever a family desires, I can help put it together and look for the best match for what they want.” What are some of the most popular destinations to travel to in February? “It depends on what someone wants to do. During winter, someone may want to escape to the sunshine or go on a historical trip. It really depends on what you want. The best vacation is the vacation of your desire.” What are some must-pack items that people might forget at the last minute? “I’ve had to run back home for my passport. Bring a birth certificate, especially for kids if you’re going to use it as a form of identity. Bring sunscreen and bug spray. We all have our products that we like, but they might not have those brands in other countries. Also bring products like Advil. For us, that’s over the counter, but sometimes you need prescriptions for medical essentials in other countries. I also advise people to get travel insurance before trips.”

$ 91 Million Announced for Far Rock Revitalization Downtown Far Rockaway is getting a huge chunk of money for much-needed revitalization. During his State of the City address on Thursday, February 4, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a $91 million investment in the revitalization of the area as an opportunity to spur new economic activity. Following Sandy, de Blasio said his office had been working in partnership with Councilman Donovan Richards and community members like Glenn Collins to discuss Far Rockaway. “After Sandy hit, Glenn was knocking on the doors of his elderly and disabled neighbors, asking what he could bring them. Now, he helps Far Rockaway residents get their GEDs, find jobs, and build better lives for themselves through his job at our local Workforce1 Center. Today, the vision held by Glenn and so many other Far Rockaway residents will become a reality,
de Blasio said. “I am proud to announce that the City of New York is investing $91 million dollars to transform Downtown Far Rockaway – the kind of investment this neighborhood has not seen in years. The mayor briefly described some of the projects the money will go toward, including helping businesses in commercial corridors like on Beach 20th Street. The Sorrentino Recreation Center will be improved to offer things like job training workshops for parents while their kids play games. The plan also includes the new, state-ofthe-art Downtown Far Rockaway Library.  A press release from the Mayor’s office added, “The City will work with nonprofit and private-sector partners to bring new mixed-income housing, retail, and community facilities – along with employment opportunities – to the downtown
area. The City is poised to take a number of immediate steps to ensure this process gets off the ground, including releasing an RFP to develop a long-underutilized Department of Transportation-owned municipal lot, and the funding of improvements at area storefronts and the Sorrentino Recreation Center. The public approval and input process surrounding this economic development initiative will begin later this year. Some of the plans were products of meetings by the Downtown Far Rockaway Task Force, an advisory board made up of elected officials, community leaders and other stakeholders, which was chaired by Councilman Donovan Richards. The Task Force sent a letter to the mayor in January 2016, outlining their goals and recommendations. “The residents of Far Rockaway came togeth-
er to create a community-led vision for the future of this community to ensure a bigger and brighter future for all residents, Richards said. “I’d like to thank Mayor de Blasio, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, the Economic Development Corporation, other elected officials, local stakeholders and the entire Far Rockaway community for teaming up to take advantage of this game-changing opportunity.

REP MEEKS. REALLY? Dear Editor: I would like the community to know that Congressman Meeks evidently pays no attention to his constituents. I wrote him requesting defunding of Planned Parenthood. His response was to tell me he stands with Planned Parenthood and is glad we agree on the issue! The same response was sent to another pro-life friend. How can anything be done if our elected representatives don’t know our wishes? Was this his doing, or a staff member? Pat Johnson
POLITICAL THIEVES Dear Editor: NYC City Council members gave themselves a HUGE 32% pay raise. In comparison, NYPD officers received a 1% raise. The Council held one public debate, which started late because the members were 24-minutes late and most left before it ended. This greedy decision was rushed through with lightning speed. Ask for a garbage can on any given street corner and you’ll face months of public hearings. Members can keep their additional outside income until their
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2016
terms end. Most members have never held private sector jobs and have always lived off the public dime. Many served as aides under their predecessors and had their seats handed to them. The system is broken. Councilman Ulrich voted against the raise, Richards voted for it. Plain and simple, NYC taxpayers were robbed in broad daylight. This was a disgraceful, selfserving, greedy move... even for politicians. Keith Sullivan
LOCAL MAN MISSES MOTHERLAND Dear Editor: I’m a citizen of the United States and I cannot think about my new country without feeling proud, but my heart remains with my Motherland, the country where I was born. I was born and grew up in a small village of Donetsk region in the Ukraine Republic of Soviet Union. With the fall of Soviet Union I lost my Motherland, but my heart still remains with Ukraine, the land where I was born and where I grew up; the land where I said my first word “Mama” and where I did the first step into my future long life. Now, when I am watching TV news, my heart is bleeding. There is a civil war in
Ukraine with thousands of men being killed. It is a great tragedy for my Motherland and it is crying in pain. Since 1992, I knew that people from Donetsk Region wanted independence from Ukraine. At the same time when Ukraine had declared its independence from Soviet Union, the people of Donetsk wanted to separate from Ukraine and become a part of Russia, but the Ukrainian government and local criminals did not allow it. When in 2014 nationalists from West Ukraine seized the power in Kiev, citizens of Donetsk region declared independence and announced the Donetsk People’s Republic. The new Ukraine Government from Kiev refused to accept independence of Donetsk region and sent their death squads. The new Ukrainian government from Kiev brought nothing good to people of Donetsk region, but destruction, pain, tears, hunger and grief; they destroyed homes, schools, hospitals and churches. Despite of all government’s attacks people of Donetsk region did not surrender. They earned their freedom through extreme suffering. They were down, but they are not out and they are proud of that. When people of Donetsk were in need of support, Russia was the only country that offered a helping hand to them. More than fifty humanitarian convoys with food, medications and other goods were sent to Donetsk from Russia. When the Soviet Union fell apart, millions of people lost their jobs, savings, free medicine, free education and lives. When the referendum of independence for republics of Soviet Union was declared, I voted “Yes”. Later I realized that the separation of Soviet Union was not a good idea. “The road to hell is paved by good intensions”, the old proverb says. Now I understand that our prosperity is in our unity. I hope that the dream of citizens of Donetsk People’s Republic will come true. I wish good luck to my dear countrymen. Nikolay Malevanay
The Rockaway Times RICK IS PEEVED Dear Editor: It makes NO sense to stop at red lights when making a left from BCD on to 108th St. or when making a left from the Freeway on to BCD. If there is any reason for stopping at a red light in either place please let me know because I cannot think of one. I just assumed that the cops would be looking the other way as a matter of common sense, but apparently my expectations were set too high. I was shocked to read that they were giving summonses at these intersections. It must be like shooting apples in a barrel. Full Disclosure: I’ve been going through these lights as if they were green and will continue to do so as I seem to be unable to obey stupid laws. It’s really quite insulting that the City has no regard for the value of our time so we need to speak up for ourselves. I hope the co-chairs of the CB14 Transportation Committee can request (make that “demand”) that the DOT make these two lights perpetually green until BCD is reopened or explain why. Rick Horan
STORM DRAIN ALERT Dear Editor: Much attention, and rightfully so, is paid to beach protection and we certainly need more sand and jetties. But jetties and seawalls won’t mean anything unless more attention is paid to the bay. There is no talk about doing anything there. On Monday streets were flooded because of high tides in THE BAY. At the very least, storm drain valves need to be in working order. Check valves need to be installed. We should be talking about bay walls and oyster beds and helping protect the marshes. But first of all storm drains have to be cleared and maintained. E. Malone

Thinking Condo or Co-op? By Elizabeth Carlson
Considering buying an apartment in Rockaway? Perhaps as an investment property or as a long-term retirement plan? Well, if you are, you are not alone. As Rockaway residents, we all know that our secret is out and it has been for some time now: Rockaway is an incredible place to live. Rockaway is a centrally located paradise in close proximity to everything New York City has to offer. This has attracted droves of new people to our community, both for business and for pleasure. It seems as if these new residents are here to stay, with many of them looking to Rockaway as the next great real estate opportunity. With potential similar to places like Williamsburg or Park Slope, real estate costs here have yet to skyrocket, making investing here a plan within arm’s reach. So now the question becomes, should you buy a cooperative apartment or a condominium, and what are the differences? As with anything, there are pros and cons to buying either. When buying a cooperative, you are purchasing shares in the overall coop. You are not actually buying your apartment, but receiving a propriety lease allowing you to reside there. The number of shares you own will depend on the size of your space relative to the others in the building. When you purchase a condominium on the other hand, you are buying real estate in the more traditional sense. You actually own your unit. This difference can become a real factor when deciding to do upgrades, renovations, or changes to the floor plan of the unit. With either, most renovations will require approval, but you generally will have more free reign and flexibility renovating the interior of your condo. An owner-elected board runs both co-ops and condos. The co-op board will have more say and jurisdiction over your unit and who lives there. All potential tenants will require board approval and they will have the final say if renting is even
a possibility. Many co-ops will try to keep the owner to renter ratio on the low side; so if your ultimate goal is renting, this is something to consider. While many condos will have limitations on short-term rentals, you are generally free to rent to whomever as a condo owner. Additionally, coops are more stringent when it comes to resale. They often times charge a resale fee or “flip tax” to the owner upon selling and will have final say when it comes to approving a potential buyer. The co-op board can derail a sale, which can become frustrating for owners, particularly if the board requirements are rigorous and it happens more than once. In terms of financials, both co-op and condo owners pay a monthly fee. These monthly charges cover overall building maintenance, will generally cover garbage pick up and hot water, and will sometimes cover gas and electric. Condo owners will pay their city taxes directly, while the cooperative taxes are paid through the cooperative. You may also notice the large price difference between condos and coops, with the former carrying a much higher price tag. This is due to the fact that you will own actual, tangible real estate as opposed to shares. Currently in Rockaway, we have seen a much higher demand for condos of late, which can also lead to higher pricing. In the past month alone we’ve seen a huge increase in call volume from customers looking to purchase a condo in the area. At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to purchasing an apartment. It all comes down to the personal needs and preferences of the buyer. If you happen to be in the market for a new apartment, give us a call to help guide you through the process. Or if you are considering selling your current place, we have qualified potential buyers, patiently waiting to own their very own piece of paradise in Rockaway. A Real Estate Update From Rockaway Properties By Barbara Ferguson
Unlike the stock market, which can rise to meteoric bull market highs or fall to life-altering lows virtually overnight, the real estate market offers shelter to homeowners and investors in more ways than one. Traditional real estate remains the most tried and true investment for everyone, a sort of ‘forced’ savings account with numerous ways to grow the investment. Owners can gain equity by paying down their mortgage; with renovations and alterations to the property and appreciation as home values rise, particularly if they can buy low and sell high. For the savvy investor, venturing into buying marginal properties can result in a big payday after the home is ‘fixed and flipped’ or alternately, held and rented out for an income flow. So how does this affect our home values in Rockaway you may ask? While we have not yet reached the peak prices of 2006, low interest rates and a tight supply of properties for sale are the main reasons for the increase in home prices both nationally and locally. In 2015, our team of agents at Rockaway Properties worked with sellers, buyers and investors in all price ranges. In every instance, we found that having inside knowledge of market value is crucial to the process. With the popularity of TV shows such as HGTV and the proliferation of online real estate sites, today’s buyers are more educated than ever. But nothing can match the first hand knowledge of a good agent who is familiar with the inventory of properties in a particular area. Buyers want a quick response to inquiries, real time information and often an agent who can show
a property on very short notice. At Rockaway Properties our team of 10 experienced agents can accomplish this as we work together with a common goal of giving the best service possible. Our team approach is unique to the area and a large part of the success we continue to have. There is always an agent available to answer questions or show a property, seven days a week and an office with a full time administrative assistant who can streamline the process. When a homeowner is thinking about selling their home, it is imperative to give the most accurate, honest opinion of value. We do this by utilizing the most recent comparable sales on hand and conducting an in depth examination of each property that has sold, taking into account location, condition and amenities. Armed with our knowledge of what makes each home in Rockaway unique, we get sellers the highest prices possible and defend that price when appraisal time comes into play. Our agents closed an unbelievable 93 properties in 2015 and have already closed nine homes in 2016 and put another 27 homes into contract. These results from one agency have never been seen in Rockaway and clearly, our team approach works wonders for sellers and buyers alike! Our Rockaway Property agents Lisa, Barbara, Nia, Melissa, Colleen, Arianna, Gail, Joe, Alla and Jennie all live and own homes in the neighborhoods of Rockaway, so naturally, we have a vested interest in seeing our collective property values rise and our neighborhoods remain healthy, vibrant and of course, Rockaway strong! COMMUNITY BOARD 14: FERRIES, AN ENERGY PROPOSAL, AND DOT ON BCD By Dylan Watton
Community Board 14’s monthly meeting was filled with presentations from two city agencies and an energy company looking to convince residents of a new way to provide Rockaway with power, as well as talk about the recent flooding issues. In the night’s first major address, the Economic Development Corporation provided information and updates regarding next year’s scheduled launch of the city-wide ferry system. Plans are still for a single Rockaway landing at Beach 108th Street, which the EDC said will be built with inclement weather protection and the ability to be moved in case of another Sandy-type event. The landing was said to be 35-by-90 feet.
An operator will be announced sometime in the coming weeks, which will be responsible for the ships as well as the shuttle service. It was the shuttle service that brought out the most discussion, particularly from board members who urged that a shuttle be extended deeper in to the east end of Rockaway. The EDC schematic showed the farthest east stop would be on Beach 67th Street, and admitted after several complaints that this was inadequate and they would continue to revise the plan. District Manager Jonathan Gaska said that 60 percent of Rockaway residents live there and it would be a great disservice to have neither a shuttle that reaches them nor a ferry landing in that area. One board member argued that a stop at Beach 59th Street
Tap into savings!
would allow hundreds of more people to utilize the shuttle. The EDC reps said that as of now it is impossible to build a landing past Beach 84th Street because boats cannot get past the A train bridge without disrupting service constantly. Some board members pleaded for shorter but longer boats to be used instead. Chair Dolores Orr also called for a shuttle stop right near the Broad Channel side of the Cross Bay Bridge. The EDC said another shuttle planning meeting will take place in Rockaway in the near future. Other issues regarding the ferry that were brought up included whether there would be free parking, spaces for bikes to be locked up (the reps said that bikes will be allowed on the ferries), and
increased ferry traffic during the summer months. Many board members also asked for earlier departure times, citing the recent addition of an earlier QM16 bus added to the MTA’s schedule. The EDC reps did not give a firm commitment as to when the service would begin but gave a ballpark estimate of spring or summer in 2017. Energy company Anbaric presented to the board regarding microgrids, which is an energy system utilizing a collection of local resources that can be locally controlled, such as solar panels, batteries, back-up generators, and more. The company said that their main objective is to prevent power from going out in the first place using a series of

The Real Diehl The Valentine Mix Tape By MJ Diehl
Forget Shakespeare. Hell with you, Hallmark. If you really want to hone into the heart— skip to the songwriters. Anything Hallmark can say, a song has said better. Whereas, most cards contain the emotional complexity of a toddler—“I love Mommy” vs. “I hate peas”— songs amplify that authentic range of feelings that come with every stage of love — accommodating more moods than triple-strength bipolar medication. Whether Walking on the Moon or in a Bad Romance, I find solace, solidarity and celebration in the perfect song, knowing that Sting, Sinatra and Lady Gaga got my back. So, let’s not think of them as Silly Love Songs, because the power of the playlist cannot be underestimated. With this in mind, I’ve hidden my own, highly idiosyncratic “mix-tape” amongst
the relationship highlights below. See if you can spot it, or create your own with this cool list of love songs spanning from 1946 through today: www.bobborst. com/popculture/love-songs/ more-love-songs.asp Swingle (Single & Ready to Mingle): Don’t have a Valentine? You don’t need one! Take all the money you’ll save on flowers, chocolate, and bikini waxes and spend it on a Valentine to yourself, because Girls Just Wanna’ Have fun, and now’s your time to do it. Remember, you can’t love anyone
else, unless you love yourself. So, spend V-day embracing that you were Born This Way, and others will soon join your selflove anthem. At the very least, you don’t have to Fight For Your Right To Party with an overly possessive partner. New Love: Feelings as fresh as Baby Cupid’s bum without the messy cleanup- now, you Just Get Can’t Get Enough of your partner. She’s a drug-free high that’ll knock you out with a Love Hangover you’ll never want to get over. You’re Crazy In Love—no psychiatrists needed. Relationship Reboot: Even the truest, deepest love’s path can be bumpier than Beach Channel Drive. In Your Eyes, love may seem lost, but perhaps it’s just hiding, waiting for you to Make Loving Fun, again. The perfect song may melt that arctic heart faster than global warming. And, if at the core,
your love adores you Just The Way You Are, make like “the piano man” and let your fingers do the talking. Get Over It: You’ve made a first-class effort, but there’s no need to settle for second best, baby. You’ve done your best to Express Yourself in the most positive way possible, but even the most die-hard Don Juan has got to accept that Enough Is Enough at a certain point. Luckily, there are at least 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover that are more effective than a text message. And, if you’re on the receiving end, chin up- you won’t feel like the King of Pain for long. You’ll find Somebody to Love again. And, in the meantime, keep a brave face—Boys Don’t Cry, at least in public. (Rockaway native MJ Diehl is an acclaimed designer, writer and artist. Women of Rockaway: GEORJEAN MCHALE AND MAUREEN MILLER-BULLOCH OF LOCAL LIQUIDS By Katie McFadden
Who runs the peninsula? Women. As part of an ongoing series, the Rockaway Times is profiling local female entrepreneurs each week. This week is Georjean McHale and Maureen Miller-Bulloch, owners of Local Liquids. Sick of the same unhealthy options around town, Georjean “Jeanie” McHale and Maureen Miller-Bulloch wanted to bring a healthy alternative to the peninsula. “We wanted different alternatives to pizza, bagels and Chinese, and to introduce a healthy lifestyle made easy,” McHale said. Inspired by the many juice shops around Manhattan, sister-in-laws McHale and Miller-Bulloch decided in January 2014 to open one in their hometown. “Jeanie and I talked about it and agreed that Rockaway needed something like that. We live here, we want to be healthy and we want to make our community healthy,” Miller-Bulloch said. In July 2014, their dream became a reality when they opened Local Liquids at 209 Beach 116th Street. Local Liquids offers a wide selection of natural juices, smoothies, juice cleanses, soups, oatmeal and acai bowls. The shop is run by McHale and Bulloch, along with a team of other local young ladies. Both McHale and Miller-Bulloch were working in vastly different fields before entering the juice industry. Miller-Bulloch was working full time as a mammography technologist at Columbia Presbyterian, which she continues to do as a per diem position when she’s not at Local Liquids. McHale was selling beer and wine to restaurants around Manhattan. With the Bulloch family being a big business name around the peninsula, as co-owners of The Wharf and the owners of the auto service station, Bulloch’s of Belle Harbor, McHale had grown up around entrepreneurs, but Local Liquids is the first business venture for both ladies. Once
Maureen and Jeanie of Local Liquids they had the idea of bringing a juice shop to Rockaway, they were determined the make it happen. “Jeanie and I both have very strong personalities and when we had the idea of doing it, nothing and no one was going to stop us,” Miller-Bulloch said. The ladies used their own savings to start the juice shop but had the professional business experience of family to back them. “Our husbands and families supported our decision to be entrepreneurs. My husband (who is also Jeanie’s brother), Jeanie’s husband and Jeanie’s father offered advice and helped us when we were first opening,” Miller-Bulloch said. McHale, who became interested in juicing about five years ago, says she had a longtime interest in dietary information and wanted to share what she knew from her personal experience and research. “I’ve been on a diet my whole life, so I like to be on people’s level and serve as a spot where people can come in and get help and information about how to live a healthier lifestyle,” she said. The ladies don’t just offer healthy options. They provide healthy advice to those who come in, asking for recommendations on what juices are best for a certain condition, illness or weight loss. “What I like about the juices is that a lot of them have stuff in them that can reduce inflammation and pains. It goes beyond fuel, it can actually make you feel better,” McHale said.
Local Liquids has gained a customer-base of regulars with unique needs, which the ladies have come to know well. On a Tuesday afternoon, one man came in for his regular order and Jeanie had it prepared without having to ask. “I love our regular customers. A lot of them we know by name,” Miller-Bulloch said. Yet some are discovering Local Liquids for the first time, daily. “I love meeting new customers who have never been in the store and say ‘This place is great. I’m so happy you are here.’ To hear that is encouraging and rewarding. We know we are doing something right,” Miller-Bulloch said. Both ladies say interacting with their customers is their favorite part of the job. “I enjoy talking to people about being healthy and helping people get healthy,” Miller-Bulloch said. “I like helping people and providing a friendly atmosphere for our customers,” McHale said. The ladies do their best to customize orders for customers, make suggestions and even bring out orders to customers who may have a hard time finding parking along Beach 116th Street or those in a rush. One of the biggest challenges is breaking the idea that juices, running around $7-$8.50 a cup, are expensive. “People complain about the price sometimes, but one drink is like a full salad or more. We’ll put in whole cucumbers, apples, lemons or other fruits and veggies, into one juice. Once people watch us make these, they have that perspective of what goes into it and they’re more understanding,” McHale said. The Local Liquids ladies are some of the many women who have started new businesses within recent years and they’re proud to be a part of the movement. “In today’s world and especially our own community, more and more females are becoming business owners and its empowering and encouraging. Other women are dealing with the same problems and can offer advice. We are friends with
other female business owners in the neighborhood and we know what each other are going through on a daily basis,” Miller-Bulloch said. “There is a good amount of female business owners here and a good, cool group of girls who are getting into it. It’s very positive for the neighborhood,” McHale said. After about a year of experiencing the struggles and awards of being new business owners, the Local Liquids ladies have been able to share advice with others looking to start their own. “My three female cousins, who opened Coastal Frozen Yogurt, had asked me about opening and running a business, how I felt about it and if its a good idea. I decided to be completely honest with them. My advice: It is not always going to be easy. You will struggle, you will lose sleep, you will stress and want to scream. You will want to give up and throw in the towel and for the first year you will question what the hell were you thinking, but in the end, you wont know unless you try it. I do not regret opening a business, I would’ve regretted it if I didn’t try!” Miller-Bulloch said. The ladies are hoping to make it over the beginning slump. “We hope to be open for the long haul! We take it day by day and every day is different. We want to at least get two years under our belt and then see what the future holds,” Miller-Bulloch said. However they also have plans for expansion, such as adding wraps or salads, according to McHale, and another business venture is always a possibility. “When you open a business, it’s almost like eating a potato chip. You can’t just have one. You’re always thinking about another business idea or venture. Will we open another business? Who knows, but its never out of the question,” Miller-Bulloch said. Local Liquids is open from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The store can be reached by calling 718-9454900.

Trottenberg vs. Rosen By Allan Rosen
Polly Trottenberg, NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner claims that Queens needs Select Bus
Service. In a recent opinion piece she claims that SBS increases mobility, helps achieve economic equality and it increases safety. This is my rebuttal….

NYCDOT Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, in her opinion piece in the Queens Chronicle (1/14/16), stating “SBS is the transportation alternative Queens needs,” continues to mislead and deceive. How does Trottenberg know that when no other alternatives have been considered? The Woodhaven Community, which has expressed major dissatisfaction with that plan has asked DOT to consider buses on the inactive Rockaway Beach Line right of way just east of Woodhaven Boulevard. The Queens Public Transit Committee supports reactivation of rail service on that line. Shouldn’t those alternatives be studied before jumping to the conclusion that SBS is the alternative Queens needs? She further states that she is listening to make sure the project works for everyone along the corridor. However, is she really listening? Queens Transportation Commissioner Garcia replied to a question last November from the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association stating that SBS is a fact of life and they would be receiving it whether they wanted it or not, and that casts doubt if the commissioner is really listening. Trottenberg misleads by referring to a member of the Riders Alliance who supports SBS as a “community leader” while ignoring all the real community leaders who oppose SBS and for good reason. She refers to the 30,000daily bus commuters who supposedly would be helped by SBS, while ignoring the over 100,000 daily motorists who would be harmed by it. She cites overwhelming support by 6,000 bus commuters. Those signing petitions were merely promised better bus service. Who would oppose that? The fact is that DOT still hasn’t proved that SBS will
help more people than it will hurt. All improvements are only alleged through selective use of statistics. Where is the data to support her conclusion that “bus commutes have been sped up by as much as 30 percent”? She is equating bus travel time savings with passenger trip times, which are two separate entities. To determine the latter, one must also include walking to and from the bus, transfers, as well as waiting times, all of which DOT and the MTA have failed to do. Here are the facts: Passengers must walk farther to and from SBS bus stops, which in many cases washes out their travel time savings. The annual expense to operate SBS routes are millions of dollars more than traditional bus routes. SBS ridership on most routes has declined in 2014 greater than their respective borough averages. When a study of the Staten Island SBS S79 showed that exclusive bus lanes decreased auto travel speeds, DOT chose to dismiss that attributing the speed decrease to “other factors.” However, DOT’s biggest deception is to deliberately confuse their initial SBS plan for Woodhaven, which would cost $15 to $20 million to implement with their current BRT plan costing $231 million. Since they cannot explain how the latter plan provides ten times the benefit, I have asked Trottenberg to return to her original SBS proposal and drop BRT with its center boarding, and to allow HOV vehicles to use bus lanes which should only be in effect during peak hours. No response to that proposal has been received, only a promise it will be studied. (See Part 2 next week!) COMMUNITY BOARD Continued from Page 29 failsafe systems that would be placed throughout the neighborhoods. Anbaric is one of many companies that are submitting a request for proposals to PSEG for utility upgrades. Board members asked a number of questions about the presentation. When asked about cost the representative admitted that it will be expensive and residents would see their energy costs go up, but stressed that it is a long-term plan to keep costs down. One board member asked if there were any potential long-term health risks associated with the equipment and was told that there were none. They said they would likely have to significantly improve infrastructure in Rockaway in order for the plan to work, which led some board members to question whether or not the company would be willing to make the commitment. The rep said that Anbaric is backed by a num-
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2016 ber of major corporations who would not allow themselves to quit on a project due to their brand power. When some residents asked if the solar panels and other energy methods would be obstructive the rep simply said, “If you don’t want it, we won’t build it. The Department of Transportation provided a brief update regarding the closure of Beach Channel Drive at 108th Street. They said that National Grid will take responsibility for repairing the closed-off area, but did not say that the road collapse was necessarily the company’s fault. They also did not provide a timetable for how long the repairs might take, despite Orr stressing that it must be completed before summer traffic arrives (Gaska said that the work will probably be done quicker and cheaper since the city isn’t doing it). DOT reps said they will “do everything we can to ensure the road is fixed by then. The agency also announced that the stretch of Beach Channel Drive from
Beach 108th to Beach 145th Street will be either reconstructed or repaved beginning in Fiscal Year 2017. Beach 116th Street through Beach 124th Street will be completely overhauled. Gaska provided a brief update on why Rockaway has been experiencing so much flooding this week. He said that much of it is backflow from storm-water outflows, and said the Mayor’s Office and Office of Emergency Management were “surprised to hear how serious the issue was. He blamed most of the flooding on “faulty infrastructure and warned that future severe high tides may lead to more flooding if nothing is done. Orr spent most of her remarks explaining the inequities Queens faces when it comes to funding in the city budget, saying that per capita the borough is by far the most underserved in the city. Among the statistics she provided were $2.04 per capita for cultural developments

Page 35 versus $16.18 per capita for Manhattan and that even though Queens has by far the most Parks Department land, it only has 36 Parks officers, which is considerably higher in other boroughs. She also stated that the TWA terminal at JFK is getting a complete makeover and it may result in jobs for Rockaway residents. It is scheduled to open in 2020 and will include an on-site hotel. Orr stated that as many as 500 permanent jobs and 3200 construction jobs can be created as a result of the project. Orr encouraged board members to continue voting on the Parks without Borders website for two potential funding opportunities—one at Bayswater Park and one at Parks-owned Beach 88th Street land that can be used as a launch area for kayakers. Public speaking was brief, with some expressing concern for environmental issues and one resident complaining about the extension of the boardwalk to the west end of Beach 126th Street.

BLOCKS OF THE ROCK: BEACH 134TH STREET By Dylan Watton
On a cold and cloudy Tuesday afternoon a fleet of minivans and sedans stood vigilant outside PS114. Parents chatted amongst themselves about the recent flooding, how their day has been so far, and of course their kids, who in mere minutes would be flooding out of the brownbrick school and into the waiting cheese buses and schoolyard. PS114’s website boasts that “…the immediate vision of the school is that of a delightful Norman Rockwell painting,” and with the surrounding suburban style homes and blue-ribboned trees it’d be hard to argue with that characterization. Just steps away from the schoolyard is Bugsy Goldberg and his family. “Living across from PS114, some people say ‘Why would you want to live across from a school?’” Goldberg said. “Honestly I couldn’t think of better place to live. It’s a great place to sit on your porch and watch the kids play in the playground.” Goldberg moved to the block almost 25 years ago and picked the house in part because he grew up on Beach 142nd and his wife grew up on Beach 125th. “134th Street was right in between the two of them,” he explained. The proximity to the school also inspired Goldberg and a neighbor, Flip Mullen, to start up the ever-popular Summer Classics at nearby St. Francis de Sales. Colleen Mercer, who with her husband Jeff has been a resident on the block for over two decades, said that being near the school on Beach 134th made for an easy way to socialize.
“Having the schoolyard on the block, Bugsy sent out his, the Gallaghers sent out their kids, we sent ours, and there you go, you have a whole bunch of kids playing,” she explained. She said what has made the block special for her are the people, especially post-Sandy. “After the storm of course there was the comradery of the block, everybody came together. It’s a good block. We all tend sit on the block kind of in circles together on the beach so that’s good too.” Beach 134th is one of the longer blocks in all of Rockaway, as it has homes or buildings from beach to bay. On the corner of Rockaway Beach Boulevard is Congregation Ohab Zedek, aka the Belle Harbor Jewish Center, which according to website The Jewish Star, traces its origins “as the summer quarters of The First Hungarian Congregation Ohab Zedek, formed in 1873 on Avenue B and Houston Street in Manhattan.” The building also houses an adult day care center and an ambulance service. PS114 takes up an entire half of the block between Newport and Cronston Avenues. The rest of the streets are filled with residential houses with a variety of architectural styles. Many homes make use of white Roman columns while many others, often bunched together, feature a distinctive triangular-steeple shape. One seemingly dilapidated house on the corner is bleach white, with only black window outlines breaking up the monotony. The bay block has a mix of smaller and medium-sized dwellings while its southern beach-adjacent counterpart is populat-
ed mostly by towering homes, including two at the end of the block currently under construction (across from them, sadly, is an empty lot). Rita and Flip Mullen are mainstays of the block, having been right by the beach for 36 years. Each year on the second Saturday in July, the Mullens bring the block together by hosting a fundraiser for Rockaway Special Athletes (which meets at St. Camillus every Monday) and the Wounded Warriors. “We have been involved with the athletes 20 years in September,” Rita said. “Flip is involved in their ski program, and we have a fundraiser for them every year now. The Saturday right before September 11th was the first one. It started off with 50 people, if that, in our driveway. Now we get a permit that goes from our house all the way down to the block. It’s turned into a Rockaway reunion because now all these years later they all know these kids that are part of this program.” Flip said that he partnered with Wounded Warriors after 9/11 because he was a first responder for the FDNY, and decided to bring the event to Rockaway in 2003. Kevin Barrett, another beach block dweller, said that the fundraiser gets everybody involved. “My block is closed off for the party and I’m always there to help out when I’m there. My kids volunteer to sell shirts and stuff. We don’t have a block party so this serves as our de facto party. I don’t know for sure but I imagine every neighbor supports it.” Colleen Mercer echoed this, saying “It’s great for the kids to understand what a community is
like and giving back. My husband bartends at the event. It’s important for the neighborhood to have a little parade go up the street. If you’ve never been to it it’s something I highly recommend.” Rita Mullen described the block as “generational.” In fact, one Game of Thrones-esque sigil on a house stated “House of Gallagher—Established April 7, 1909.” “I think people love Rockaway. They have sand in their shoes and they’re not leaving. They grew up with a wonderful experience and they just didn’t want to leave,” Rita said. Goldberg added “I think the biggest thing is what hasn’t changed, which is really many of the families that are here still live on the block. We’ve gone through cycles where some of them who were kids have bought homes on the block themselves.” A few people said that block has been trending younger. “Just recently we’ve got two young families within the last year, so that’s great to see,” Mercer said. They have children the same age so you can see what’s gonna happen next.” Barrett was curious to see what happens to the Jewish Center as he said that the congregation’s numbers have been dwindling for years. “Looking at the door right now it’s changed, the beach houses all are gone,” Flip said. “We were three houses from the beach now we’re one house from the beach. But it’s just a wonderful place, and throughout the years with all the kids coming to the beach, anyone coming down always felt very welcome here whether they were older or younger.”

FLOODING Continued from Page 3 ing, but Tuesday morning’s tide once again caused moderate flooding. Local politicians kept in touch with city agencies and civic associations to disseminate information throughout the ordeal. The Department of Environmental Protection was said to have sent staff to investigate some of the heavily flooded areas to inspect catch basins and drains, but officials say that likely wasn’t the issue since the flooding was a widespread issue that also impacted parts of Brooklyn, Long Island and New Jersey. “The fact that so many areas had flooding in the streets probably indicates it wasn’t a few clogged drains,” Schwach said. “If it was one isolated area, it would be easier to investigate, but this was a case of an unusually high tide that caught people off-guard,” Goldfeder said. Among those caught off guard were drivers. Rockaway Park resident Maureen Blum Del Vecchio has commuted to Long Beach for over 15 years and said she had never seen flooding like that. “I thought there must have been a bad water main break, but I kept seeing it more as I drove east. At one point, the water was easily above my car door and I thought the car was going to die. Once I got past Seagirt, it started to clear, but when I was near West Park Ave in Long Beach, all hell broke loose. I had never felt that vulnerable driving a car. I live in the buildings, so during Sandy, I was looking down at everything, but being in my car during the flood
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2016 made me realize what everyone lower down must have felt during Sandy. It was very scary,” Blum Del Vecchio recalled. Another highly vulnerable area, and the worst hit by this week’s flooding was Broad Channel. According to Rockaway Times columnist Peter Mahon, the street water level reached 28 inches on Monday morning and 26 inches on Tuesday. Several residents lost cars and some had water in their properties. West 12th resident, Edwin Freiberg says he lost two cars on Monday. “The tide was a surprise. By the time we saw it there was nothing we could do except watch. Both of my cars are totaled,” Freiberg said. “It’s upsetting because I just finished paying for my little car and we’re still repairing our house from Sandy.” Vulnerable to flooding, Broad Channel residents pay close attention to the tides. “We knew the tides we’re going to be high, according to the charts but we didn’t expect the surges to be this strong,” lifelong resident Mike Schilling said. However despite the frequent threat, residents remain positive. “This isn’t a reason to move. These are our homes and where our families have planted our roots. Is it annoying? Sure, but we’re always going to come together and help each other in a time of need. That’s what makes us Broad Channel,” Schilling said. Government Could Use Some Moderation By Peter Galvin, MD
If you have read my column in the past then you will know that I am not a fan of increasing government control of our lives. The government assumes that we are too stupid to make our own food choices. A few months ago NYC decided to force chain restaurants to post a warning next to “high salt” content foods. High was defined as exceeding the 2300 mg recommended daily allowance (RDA). This was based on the belief that high salt intake causes high blood pressure and heart disease, a belief that a number of researchers and articles are now questioning. Take for example TGI Friday’s bacon cheeseburger, which is reported
to contain about 4600 mg of salt, or twice the RDA. Would knowing how much salt or how many calories it contains deter you from ordering one? Of course not. Having said that eating one every day would be a very bad idea but once in a while will not lead to your undoing. Another example is Mayor Bloomberg’s failed attempt to limit the sale of sugary drinks (ironically there is recent research that suggests that diet drinks may cause obesity due to artificial sweeteners undergoing chemical changes in the body). People should know that smoking is bad for them and eating a cheeseburger every day is bad, too, plus diabetics and obese
The Rockaway Times
people should know to avoid sugar-containing foods and beverages, but being human we will occasionally make poor choices. The key is knowing that you made a poor choice and not doing it again. Where will increasing government control of our daily lives lead to – rationing stamps for bacon cheeseburgers? That would be Orwell’s “1984” on steroids. The most important factor in a proper diet is moderation. The long arm of government is also reaching into the medical profession. Medicare is now reducing reimbursement to doctors who do not use electronic medical records, or EMR. One percent less this year, two percent next year, etc. Solo practitioners like me cannot afford to install EMR as the startup cost plus hardware is at least $30,000 and monthly maintenance fees run about $1000. Plus NY State requires paper backup files. EMR is supposed to improve the flow of medical information between providers but despite passwords and encryptions the information can still be hacked, exposing the patient’s medi-
cal information to disclosure or worse. Medicare does not allow any waivers or exemptions for providers. Now enter NY State. As of 3/27/16 all prescriptions in the state must be submitted electronically. No more written prescriptions, no more telephone prescriptions. If you take prescription meds, all refills must be done electronically. If you need an antibiotic on a weekend or holiday you will most likely be forced to go to an ER or urgent care as your doctor will not be able to call it in to the pharmacy. Again the state is not permitting any exemptions or waivers. The founding documents of this great republic state that it is a government “of the people, by the people and for the people.” It’s the “for the people” part that our elected representatives have seem to have forgotten about. I suggest maybe it’s time for the electorate to remind them of it, unless they all wind up in jail before the next election. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Spotted: Rocking The Rock Times Tee One group in Barbados traded their Rockaway Times t-shirts for free drinks. The nerve! (But the shirts look good on the natives, we have to admit!). Ed Sullivan was show-
ing off his top wardrobe in the Cayman Islands and a couple of local legends, Tom Murphy and Doug MacLeod were spotted wearing long sleeve black tees. Nice.

In May of 1931 a monster air pageant was held at the New Floyd Bennet Airport on Barren Island in the borough of Brooklyn. Planes, pilots, civilians and military came from far and wide to celebrate the Grand Opening. Today’s image shows an over flight of U.S. Army Falcon BiPlanes on that day. A large crowd observed many other overflights, aerobatics and static displays of all types of aircraft. The airport did not do well, especially after losing Air-Mail Rights to Newark Airport.
coming of World War II, as did the U.S. Coast Guard Air Service and the NYCPD Air Service. At present the field is part of Gateway National Recreation Area. The city’s second airport (La Guardia) opened in 1939 and JFK after World War II.

PRO BASKETBALL SCOUT DETAILS JOURNEY FROM ROCKAWAY ROOTS By Dylan Watton
Basketball has taken Tim Shea from Rockaway to Rotterdam and everywhere in between. Now living in Lugo, Spain, a northwestern city surrounded by completely-intact Roman walls, Shea is a consultant with Krossover, a sports analytics company, and has spent over 40 years playing, scouting, and coaching basketball all around the world. But his journey began with a close friend and a wooden backboard in Arverne. “When I was five I moved to Rockaway in Hammels,” Shea recalled. “My father and mother, myself, and my brother and one sister. Three more of us eventually came along in a three-bedroom apartment. There were eight people and one bathroom!” In kindergarten at St. Camillus, Shea met Ray Corrigan, an Arverne native who introduced Shea to the sport of basketball. “We had a wooden
Tim Shea with Nigerian team. backboard that was nailed up on a telephone pole, that’s where we taught him to play,” Corrigan said. “He got very good, and we both played down at St. Francis with the CYO. He was tall, fast, and he could jump higher than me.” Shea credited Corrigan with teaching him everything he knows about basketball, and considers him more of a brother than a friend.
“I’d stay at his house to sleep. His mother was a wonderful woman. She would make the best spaghetti sauce ever.” Shea honed his game playing through Rockaway, practicing solo in the MS 180 gym where his dad George worked, and on the courts formerly on Beach 108th Street. “We’d play three-on-three on this black, uneven tar. The
backboard was dead, so if you banked it off a good angle it’d go right in. First team to get to seven won and everything was one point. There’d be guys waiting hours to get on the court. And I would be on for hours because if we did lose, somebody else would get me on their team!” After St. Camillus, Shea moved on to Brooklyn Tech then transferred to Far Rockaway High School after one year. During a rough period at home he considered joining the Navy, but his mom Rita Ann pleaded with him to stay in school a little while longer. It paid off. Despite being attracted to baseball more (he said the story of his life should be titled “I Always Just Wanted to Play Third Base” and credited the sport for influencing his scouting tendencies), coach Al Metzker recruited the 6’4” player after seeing him in gym class. In short order Shea began starting

PRO BASKETBALL Continued from Page 42 for the varsity team and eventually moved on to a prep school in New Jersey followed by four years at Rollins College in Florida, where he was named senior captain and made the school’s Hall of Fame. Following graduation from college, Shea got a tryout with the ABA’s Kentucky Colonels that led to an offer to play in Holland. After that, he played for two teams in Vienna, which he termed “an absolutely beautiful city.” In 1980, Shea began to transition to a coaching career, working at various levels of competition in Austria, Italy, Israel, and Spain. In 2012 Shea was an associate head coach for the Nigerian national basketball team, which shockingly upset the John Calipari-led Dominican Republic team to make it to the Olympics. Throughout the 1990s, Shea worked as a scout for the New York Knicks, eventually becoming the international director of scouting for the team. “What I realized basically was that the foreign market was opening up and
Tim Shea I could give a hand,” Shea said of his decision to begin scouting professionally. “I would analyze how a guy shot, how fast he was. You’ve got to analyze every situation, there’s a lot of strategy going on.” In 2000, Shea began working for Jerry and Bryan Colangelo with the Phoenix Suns, which he termed “a great experience.” He then moved on to work with the Charlotte Bobcats before leaving as Michael Jordan began to take over the franchise.
Last year on June 23, Shea made the news as he sent a tweet to current Knicks president Phil Jackson urging him to draft a potential prodigy named Kristaps Porzingis, who had been playing in Spain for several years. “IMO: If Kristaps is passed over by NYK at 4 then @PhilJackson11 should change his Triangle to a Square and I don’t mean MSG,” the tweet said. The Knicks did indeed draft Porzingis and the 7’3” Latvian wonder has brought Knicks fans great optimism in his rookie campaign. “He is gonna be a very good Pau Gasol-type player. A great complimentary player to the stars, like [Toni] Kukoc was with MJ, Scottie [Pippen] and co. Now Phil Jackson has to find the stars to surround him with. That’s the hard part, too,” Shea said. Shea said that the NBA style of basketball is much more player-centric compared to the international game. “The NBA is a players’ league, but coaches are much more in control [in Europe] than they can be there. Over here fans come to see the games, not the players.
Page 45 In the top division of the Spanish league, they would play once a week, so you practice during the week. Some teams play two games a week in the Euro league. It’s much more dynamic than the NBA, those guys don’t have time to practice.” Shea has kept his love for the game even as it has evolved over the years from isolation-oriented play in the ‘90s to the pace-and-space system perfected by the Golden State Warriors. “It’s good basketball if it’s done well. It’s like music for me, there’s two types, good music and bad music. To me has anything really changed? No, it’s the same court.” Shea has settled down in Spain and now has a wife and two kids. He still fondly remembers where it all started for him. “I miss growing up there, and I still fish because of that experience. I would fish off the Cross Bay Bridge to get blue fish, striped fish, crabs, chuckleheads, and anything else. I was so happy that we moved from Brooklyn and I was very lucky to grow up in Rockaway because it gave you a chance to grow.”
