It’s that time again. Love is in the air in Rockaway. And with Valentine’s Day falling on a Friday this year, more may want to get into the spirit. And whether celebrating with your significant other, getting together with friends or showing yourself a little love, there is plenty to do to celebrate locally. If chocolates, cards and flowers are too cliché, try a little something different this Valentine’s Day. Rockaway Brewing Company (415 Beach 72nd Street) is offering a unique way to celebrate the occasion. The theme is Love is Love and there will be plenty of love and good vibes at this dance party and drag show. The Rockaway Babes, featuring drag queens, Dreama Belle and Ginger Ladd, plus special guest, Jack Dahlia, will set the mood with love-filled performances that will inspire all to join them on the dance floor. And if you need more encouragement, the brewery will have all your favorite Rockaway Brewing

CROM’S SALSA NIGHT FUNDRAISER TO SUPPORT EARTHQUAKE-STRICKEN ISLAND By Kami-Leigh Agard

These are again difficult times in Puerto Rico, and the folks at CROM Physical Culture are back at it again to help, this time fundraising a disaster relief effort after repeated earthquakes and powerful aftershocks crippled the Caribbean island starting December 28. So this Saturday, February 15, get your dancing shoes on and bring your family and friends for a special salsa night, where you’ll not only learn and prune your salsa moves with NYCbased expert instructors, celebrate Puerto Rican culture, but also help CROM—pa’lante (translated as move forward)— in helping the people on the island, many locals affectionately refer to as “Rockaway South” or “hogar lejos del hogar,” (“home away from home”). Classes are $30 per person and proceeds go toward San Juanbased nonprofit, With Love, Puerto Rico. After barely recovering from Hurricane Maria, which decimated the island just less than three years ago, more than 1,280 earthquakes have hit the southern region of Puerto Rico since December 28, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Among them was a 6.4 magnitude quake that hit on January 7, killing one person, injuring nine others, and knocking out power and causing water shortages to virtually the entire island of more than three million people, driving thousands to shelters, and some even determinedly living in tents outdoors. According to The Associated Press, more than four thousand people are still living in makeshift shelters, many afraid to return to what’s left of their homes for fear of another earthquake. Also, just two weeks ago on January 25, a 5.9 magnitude aftershock occurred, causing further damage and embedding more fear. According to With Love, Puerto Rico Executive Director Marcia Pierluisi, recovery

is not just difficult with infrastructure damages, but many are afraid to return to their homes and are mentally traumatized. “People don’t feel safe inside their homes. They’re sleeping outside in tents or in their cars because they're afraid that another earthquake may strike, and it might be a bigger one. They don't want to get stuck under a roof. People are having panic attacks, anxiety and related issues. So, we’re also working on putting together a team of mental health professionals who can help people work through their fear, and start building their minds and hearts towards hope,” Pierluisi said. According to With Love, Puerto Rico’s Facebook page, the organization was established in 2014, “to promote community and volunteer service through the engagement and contribution of all the volunteers in order to develop initiatives that allow us to provide and cover for various sectors that are in need of basic and social necessities. Our main focus is based in our philosophy that love is all we need, and this love is what drives us. We hope to continue implementing numerous projects of social and community development that will help us contribute to forge a better Puerto Rico for coming generations.” Pierluisi said when the organization was first launched, their focus was in helping foster children and other displaced individuals gain access to much-needed resources. Then when Hurricane Maria hit, the organization immediately focused on disaster relief efforts by supplying food, hygiene supplies and other essential items. “Many locals on the island lost faith in the government to help them, especially when resources were not funneled to people displaced

and truly in need,” she said. Then last year just after Christmas, when the sudden surge in earthquakes and tremors injected another fear amongst locals, the organization saw the need to inject faith and love, especially in the south regions most affected— Guanica, Guayanilla, Ponce, Yauco, Sabana Grande and San German. Pierluisi said, “Since the beginning of January, we have been collecting donations whether monetary or supplies. With monetary donations we obtain specific necessities to distribute in municipalities with families that need them the most. People who lost their homes don't know what they're going to do. It’s like starting over from scratch. Just two years ago, we had Hurricane Maria, when a lot of these southern communities were very affected and had to start from zero. And now they're facing that situation again.” The idea for a salsa night was inspired by CROM’s own members. “We play salsa music in the gym on ‘Salsa Saturdays,’ while people are grinding away in SHRED and Muay Thai (which helps with the footwork for our boxers),” CROM co-owner Sarah Romulo said. “One day, some of the fighters started breaking out their best version of salsa dancing, and the idea popped in my head— let’s have a salsa night in the gym, where the community could learn how to dance from some legit experts, and help out our friends in Puerto Rico at the same time.” For the Romulos, who have held other fundraisers for

Puerto Rico, the island holds big importance. “We have a special place in our hearts for Puerto Rico. We’ve always received so much love when we visit. Living through Hurricane Sandy in Rockaway, which pales in comparison to what PR has gone through over the last couple of years, makes us want to give back with love and support. We did a big collection in our gym after Hurricane Maria collecting diapers, formula, canned food and more from members of our generous Rockaway community. Then about six months later, we started going down a few times a year to volunteer with their Muay Thai Federation giving seminars to help rebuild the sport on the island. We weren't sure how to help this time, but we figured making a donation to a reputable nonprofit, For Love, Puerto Rico, that’s on the ground doing the work would be the best way. And hey, maybe we'll put these salsa skills to work on our next trip to PR!” CROM’s Salsa Night is this Saturday, February 15, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the gym (217 Beach 92nd Street). Classes are $30 per person. People of all ages are welcome, including children. CROM’s goal for the fundraiser is $1,200. Broad Channel Rallies for House Fire Victims A house fire has left a Broad Channel family displaced, but the community is quickly coming together to help those affected. On Tuesday, February 11, at around 7:30 p.m., FDNY and the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire on the first floor of 627 West Road. According to FDNY, the fire was within the walls of the first floor. The firefighters were able to get the fire under control before 8:15 p.m. and everyone inside was able to make it out safe, but smoke, fire and water damage have left the family without a home. It wasn’t long before the Broad Channel community pulled together to help those in need. Immediately after the fire, the

BC Public Safety Facebook page ran a 50/50 to help provide the family with funding to purchase things they need. Within 12 hours, the 50/50 sold out. The P.S. 47 Parents Association is also holding a collection for the family, as three of the family’s four children attend P.S. 47. The school is accepting gift card donations for stores where the family can buy supplies of necessities (Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, Amazon, Stop and Shop, etc). Donations can be given to children who attend the school, or reach out to the P.S. 47 Parents Association Facebook page for more info on how to donate. According to FDNY, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Continued from Page 6 brought up legitimate concerns, which they felt were ignored by MTA reps. “We took a survey at our school and so far we have 306 responses with 43% saying that eliminating the Q22 service west of Beach 116th Street would negatively impact students’ commute; 82.5% saying that removal of the Q53 would negatively impact their commute,” Hernandez said. “Plus eliminating the Q53 bus would affect students with disabilities.” Mikell also expressed how the potential of a men’s shelter opening on Beach 101st Street would be a double-blow if the Q53 bus is eliminated and students have to transfer to several buses, on streets where homeless men could be walking around. “When the question was posed about how this will negatively impact the community, one of the representatives responded, ‘Just drive.’” Mikell said, “I thought that was so rude, especially at a meeting

where students were voicing their concerns. It made me wonder, ‘Are they even listening to us?'" At the YMCA meeting, a question was posed about if the A-train could regularly run from Rockaway Park to Manhattan. Sally Librera, senior vice president for Subways, said, “Extending a regular line from Rockaway Park to Manhattan would be complicated by budget moves, plus the A-train

is the longest line in the subway system, and also bridge closures will make it unreliable.” Another question was if the old “H” round robin train that ran from Mott Avenue to Beach 116th Street could be re-established. Librera said the same reliability issues would arise. As question-after-question was directed by the moderator to the MTA reps, local community advocate, John Cori, exclaimed out loud, “This is censorship. Why

is the moderator censoring our questions?” Another attendee burst out, “Few of the questions you are answering have anything to do with the issue at hand. We came to hear about the future of the buses, and are still waiting to be answered.” CB14’s Tedesco said, “I feel if Andy Byford would have come here, not only would he have taken to heart the issues we specifically have, but he would have come back with an answer tonight. “He is someone that owns a problem and finds a solution. These reps tonight just show they don’t understand our issues, and clearly, they don’t care. I think they are going to end up giving us a few bones here and there like bringing back the Q53, and keep it going to Jackson Heights, which I feel is a real huge oversight. If this is our leadership for NYC Transit, we are in trouble.” As the proposal is still in early stages, the MTA still has a chance to reconsider. Keep reading the RT for future updates.

land use projects, community members packed the Knights of Columbus, all eager to hear updates regarding construction proposals for the peninsula. The meeting began with reports from CB 14 Chair Delores Orr, who expressed her disappointment regarding the MTA meeting held at the YMCA on February 6. This meeting’s purpose was to answer all general questions regarding the MTA, but questions about the Q53, Q22, and Q35 redesign seemed to be the main topic of discussion. Orr told community members that MTA representatives assured the people that they heard their concerns, “loud and clear.” However, she felt that they did not handle the meeting as best they could have. Prior to the meeting, attendees were allowed to submit questions they were promised would be answered, but that was not the case. Orr said that while she understands the process of submitting questions beforehand due to time constraints, she believes that representatives should follow their word by reading and answering every question submitted. Out of the six different questions Orr had submitted, they only answered one. She also stated that the only question of hers the MTA repre-

disappointment with the MTA, not just about the redesign plan, but with the MTA as a whole. Outreach Director at St. John’s Baptist Church, Deacon Stillwell, spoke about how the MTA continuously promises members of the church they will work with them and help meet their needs, but have continuously failed to do so. Another speaker, Michael O’Reilly, brought to the board’s attention, that with the help of Senator Addabbo and Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato, residents of Broad Channel have issued a new bill to Albany, which would prohibit the dumping of contaminated material into Jamaica Bay. He stated that the bill had unanimous support by the NYS Assembly and Senate. However, when the bill was sent to Governor Cuomo, it was vetoed. Although issued by members of the Broad Channel community, O’Reilly felt it was important to inform CB14, because this also affects members of Far Rockaway, Arverne, and Edgemere, as these contaminated materials are being dumped, “right in our backyards, off the 59th Street Marina and 40th Street.” O’Reilly concluded his speech by urging the community to contact electContinued on page 15

RTC’s New Show is a Peach By Marina Cregan

The Rockaway Theater Company’s (RTC) Young People’s Workshop has yet again produced another musical, showcasing the talents of local children from the peninsula. Because of such high enrollment for the workshop, RTC’s directors decided it would be best to show off the unbelievable talent these children possess, by splitting the group of youngsters into two groups based on age, creating two fabulous shows. This past Thursday, February 6, the youngest of the bunch, ages six to thirteen, opened their performance of

away, in efforts to exploit the peach for their own benefit. However, nothing can keep

O’Connor’s dedication to the role was evident, and her lively personality was so refreshing to see on stage. Throughout the big group numbers, which were choreographed by Gabrielle Mangano, the kids wore colorful costumes that certainly paid homage to Roald Dahl himself. All of the kids danced in sync, while letting their individual personalities shine. It’s very clear that Mangano used her know-how to create dance

Roald Dahl’s, “James and the Giant Peach, Jr.” on the main stage. “James and the Giant Peach,” written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, is based on Roald Dahl’s famous children’s book originally written in 1961. The plot revolves around main character, James, who is forced to live with his two malicious aunts upon becoming an orphan. Instead of caring for the young boy, his aunts, Spiker and Sponge, force James to do all of the labor around the house. Longing for a life full of adventure, James meets a mysterious man, Ladahlord, who gives him magic beans, claiming they could fulfill James’ desire. Clumsily, James spills the magic beans on a peach tree, producing a single peach that suddenly grows to the size of a house. When Spiker and Sponge see the ginormous peach in their backyard, they selfishly lock James

the curious boy from finding a tunnel and entering the giant peach. While inside the peach, James meets a variety of insects that quickly become his new “family,” as they encounter numerous adventures. Although James has encountered so much misfortune in his short life, the play concludes with James living happily ever after with his new found “family.” In order to showcase all of the children’s talents to the best of their abilities, directors, Susan Warren Corning, Jodee Timpone, Richard Louis-Pierre, and Gabrielle Mangano, made the executive decision to double cast all of the parts, creating the ‘James’ cast and the ‘Peach’ cast. By double casting the show, many more children were able to showcase what they have learned throughout the past few months in front of their friends

and family. Because the number one priority of the workshop is to teach young kids about performing arts, the directors had alumni from the “Bye Bye Birdie, Jr.” cast help as stage hands. Whether it be helping with the music, lighting, or changing of the sets, the teens of the older group not only learned more about the backstage life of a production, but they also served as role models for the younger actors. The directors’ continuous efforts certainly do not go unnoticed, as clearly proven by both groups of the children’s workshop. This past weekend, The Rockaway Times had the pleasure of seeing the ‘James’ cast, which was without a doubt loaded with talent, even with many of the kids making their stage debut for the very first time. Mary Claire Smyth, who plays the role of Ladahlord, opened the show with her strong vocals, demanding the audience’s attention before the curtain revealed the colorful and bright set. Smyth spoke so clearly and articulately, her energy captivated the stage. Equally captivating, was Emily O’Connor, who played the lead role, James. O’Connor was pre-

However, it wasn’t just their dancing abilities that contributed to such a fantastic production, but it was also the delivery of their lines and songs that blew the audience away. Throughout the entire performance, not one of the youngsters forgot their lines. Some of these kids haven’t even hit double digits yet! All that time and effort spent during rehearsals had really paid off. The kids were also challenged with singing songs consisting of harmonies and rounds, which may seem difficult for children of such young ages, but to the children of the workshop it was a challenge they overcame with ease. All in all, the performance is wonderful, and it truly shows the talents of local youth actors and the lessons being taught through RTC’s Young People’s Workshop. There are still plenty of opportunities to see it for yourself. ed officials for their help because this, “has got to stop.” After the floor was closed to the public, representatives from the NYC Department of Design and Construction team presented future plans for the Breezy Point Coastal Resiliency Project. Due to the damage caused by Superstorm Sandy, they stated that they are here to, “provide a reliable and integrated thought protection system,” for Breezy Point residents. With federal funding of $58 million, the project’s main mission is to reduce the risk of coastal flooding. In order to keep the coastal surge of water from coming in, they will create a perimeter system around the community to keep waters out as they rise. This perimeter system will be made of sheet pile that can withstand the salt environment, allowing it to have a long lifespan regarding the threat of water corrosion. It will also include two gates at the East and

West ends of Breezy, which can be opened and closed at any time. In response to the design team’s plan, Orr expressed her concerns regarding who will be responsible for opening/closing the gates, because she feels that residents should have control regarding their gates. The team assured CB14 that they are still in the initial design process, but, “pedestrian access is critical, and are actively engaging these proposals with the community.” They also stated that there will be no ramps at the gates’ openings, making it accessible for people with disabilities. Construction is expected to start between winter 2020 and early spring of 2021. The meeting continued with Committee Reports from the Housing and Land Use Committee. Due to the absence of Alan Moore and Mike Tubridy, Orr read the committee’s reports, regarding proposed zoning map amendments of Commercial Overlay at 137 Beach 116th, and the proposal of a senior housing project at 450 Beach 67th and 430 Beach 68th. Both of these

items from the committee are Pre-ULURP, meaning they are coming to CB14 before submitting their application, keeping the community involved with future plans. Regarding the first proposal, the report expressed that there is currently a condo building at this location that is undergoing construction. The One Sixteen development has 86 housing units, and guarantees 100% parking for residents. The owners are also looking to put in a commercial tenant that hopes to open a 3000 sq. ft. Orange Theory Fitness Gym. Because this location’s zoning is currently a R7A/C1-3, the committee is proposing to have its zone changed to a R7A/C2-4, because its current zoning does not allow fitness gyms. The committee’s second proposal is to create a senior housing project next to the House of Worship on Beach 67th and across the street on Beach 68th. They are looking to change its current zoning from R4A to a R6 zone, which will result in a nine story building with 84 units

However, because they will receive federal funding, they can only give a preference for seniors on a borough level, meaning there is no guarantee specifically for Rockaway seniors. Because of this, the committee asked for letters of support from all of the neighboring properties, and that they fully understand what this up-zoning means. This up-zoning also includes adjacent lots, where they hope to build a school for Peninsula Prep to relocate from St. Mary’s. While CB14 members praised plans for the senior housing, some expressed their confusion on why Peninsula Prep should be relocated. To their response, Orr said, “It is a very complicated project, and a lot more needs to come with it. It is just the first chapter in a very long book.” The meeting then concluded with agreeing to discuss next month about establishing a future meeting with the city planning, in order to get a better understanding on these proposals regarding zone amendments.

Bugalou Presents The THE BAND Band and More The Bugalou Concert Series returns to Rockaway with its first show of the 2020 season at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 28 at St. Camillus Springman Hall. The THE BAND Band (TTBB) returns after earning rave reviews for its performance during Bugalou's initial season in 2017. TTBB brings the music of The Band to life with outstanding renditions of such classics as The Weight, Long Black Veil, Up on Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Stage Fright, The Shape I'm In, Ophelia, It Makes No Difference, and more. The Band is one of the most revered and beloved groups in the history of rock and roll. They first gained notoriety backing Bob Dylan as he went electric, and they would continue to collaborate for many years. Their debut album, Music From Big Pink, was a turning point in rock and roll, often cited by Eric Clapton and George Harrison. They would go on to be among the featured performers at Woodstock, and a few

years later at the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen. The classic lineup also consisted of Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson and they gave their farewell concert in 1976. It was dubbed The Last Waltz with many guests including Clapton, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr, and of course, Bob Dylan. Martin Scorsese directed the film of the concert, which is one of the most acclaimed rock movies of all time. A new docu-

mentary is also being released in theaters this month. The Band was unique and their music is often credited as the beginning of what is now called Americana. The THE BAND Band replicates and augments the sound of the classic lineup with the TTBB horns who give it the sound that they achieved for The Last Waltz. They are regulars at venues up and down the East Coast including City Winery, World Cafe, and Daryl's House, and Bugalou is proud to once again bring them right to us in Rockaway. The evening will begin very fit-

tingly with Real Young and Lazy Horse, who have made a great name for themselves with performances at Rippers, Rockaway Brewing Company, Rockaway Beach Surf Club, and elsewhere during the past two years. They bring lots of energy and charisma to their performances of Neil Young classics such as Cinnamon Girl, Southern Man, Like a Hurricane, Rockin' in the Free World and more. This will be a very tasty appetizer for both the evening, and for a Bugalou headlining performance later this year. Do not miss the opportunity to experience this great band. THROUGH THE HEART Two neighbors who live next door to each other have a problem. One has a herd of sheep, one a dog that he lets roam free. Sometimes the dog wanders to the sheep pen and kills one of the sheep. He asked his neighbor to leash the dog, neighbor refused. What should he do? Put up a fence? Shoot the dog? The solution he found was this: he gave two lambs to his neighbor’s small children. For fear of his dog harming his children’s new pets they were caring for, he leashed his dog. The giver found a solution through

his heart to reach the heart of his neighbor through his children. The thread that unites all of us is through the heart. And if we come from that space to solve our problems, our friends’ or family’s problems and the world’s problems, think about what that would mean. “Thinking” through the heart to figure things out. Thinking outside of the patterns in our minds that we have developed throughout the years. Of course, the neighbor with the sheep did not really know what his neighbor would do once his children

received the gifts, but, he gave of something that the dog was destroying, therein giving the lesson to the owner of the dog. And all lived happily ever after! Think about this simple idea: think through the heart instead of through the mind. How are we thinking about a solution? From what root space? From greed? From anger? From hate? From sadness? From discontentment? From misery? If from any of these spaces we issue forth our solutions, the results are sure to increase the breadth of the problems and not lesson or solve them. If instead, we come from the any of the following spaces: joy, bliss, contentment, love, gladness, delight, compassion, understanding, the results have a much better chance of being peaceful and harmonious. So first finding the motivation in these positive heart feelings, then thinking outside of the patterns in our minds to figure it out. Also, understanding why someone might be coming from a certain place, first, then thinking what would make him/her

change the mindset—taking the time, feeling what is going on, being thoughtful as to the next step, rather than reacting out of negative feelings and old thought patterns—all ways of bringing harmony to our immediate circumstances and what lies beyond. SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning The Power of the Written Word When I was a child, my mother made us write thank you notes for pretty much everything: graduations, communions, birthdays, etc. She would buy a packet of thank you notes and we would be required to thank people for their generosity. Not only did we write the cards ourselves, we addressed the envelopes. So at an early age, we knew how to address an envelope. (That will be another column: stuff kids don’t know. Not school’s fault, parent’s fault!) When I became a mother, I also required my children to write thank you notes,

even after they moved out of my home! My daughter had a housewarming party last year, and I ordered her personalized thank you cards. I hope she sent them out! It has become such a habit of mine that even when my high school students give me Christmas presents, I send thank you cards to their homes. One young lady told me that my thank you note, “Made her vacation.” She also said she will keep it forever as it meant a lot to her. Besides thank you notes, little cards can make a difference. When my children were small

and my fabulous grandmother was still alive, she combed the malls of the west coast of Florida looking for cards for EVERY holiday. My children received: "Happy _____Day to my great granddaughter." Onc in a while, she would have to handwrite in the “great” as sometimes she could not find a St. Patrick’s Day card with that title. She also added a small amount of money in the card and before the children could read they would know what I was giving them when they saw my grandmother’s beautiful penmanship. They would squeal with delight and exclaim, “Gee-Gee sent us a card!” One of my cousins posted a picture on Instagram of a thank you card my mother had sent her mother. My Aunt Katie saved it and almost fifty years later it was still around. I have to tell you, just seeing my mother’s beautiful handwriting placed a smile on my face. As a teacher, cards and letters are so special. I can remember being so upset that after Sandy I lost a handwritten loose leaf

note from a student thanking me for being tough on him. Sometimes, I re-read those letters to get me though a tough week or to remind me that I am actually making a difference. One student who writes me a Christmas card every year, and I do not even teach him anymore, told me to tell Mr. Hanning to be good to me. The written word is so powerful that even a World War II veteran asked for cards from people he does not even know for Valentine’s Day. My students made cards for extra credit and their sentiments to the veteran who survived Iwo Jima were quite beautiful. I was super proud of them. Currently, I have a cousin who is deployed in the Middle East. On my list of things to do is to send her a card. I am sure just a kind word will provide a little comfort while she is serving our country. So, for Valentine’s Day this year, send a card to someone and write a kind sentiment to them. Valentine’s Ghosts & Crypts! By Lou Pastina

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, I thought I would share a couple of fun New York things to do. While it’s traditional to send flowers with hearts, and take one’s love out to dinner for Valentine’s Day, my interests tend more to the macabre, as

you well know. So, here are two fun, slightly scary things to do this weekend. The McKittrick Hotel is an event space like no other, located on West 27th Street on the far west side of Chelsea. It is the host of the immersive, "Sleep No More," an interactive take primarily on Shakespeare's Macbeth, and has a bar, a rooftop space, and they run special events. Recently a production company from London has set up shop for the play, "The Woman in Black." This old-fashioned ghost story first produced on Drury Lane in London’s West End in 1989 has spurred multiple interpretations including a movie, but the play, as they say, is the real thing. It is set in the McKittrick’s Club Car, which is a bar, and upon arrival you are offered a shot of Jameson. You will need it. The two-act play takes place on a stage and in and around the audience with mist surrounding all. There are some hair-raising moments that

will produce a scream or two, and you will not be disappointed. You know a good ghost story when you remember it at night, peeking out above your covers to see if that shadow in the corner of your room is really just a shadow. Trust me, it’s not always a shadow! And for our Rockaway born and bred, the bar is open both before and during intermission. There is nothing like a little marination to add to a good ghost story. The show runs through April and is a limited engagement. In addition, it is not priced like Hamilton and is very affordable, and pretty scary! And since a good scare is probably (maybe) good for your heart, there is the Valentine’s tie-in! The second recommendation is a candle-lit tour of the crypts of old St. Patrick’s between Mulberry and Mott Streets. If you have never visited old St. Pat’s, I highly recommend it for several reasons. First, it has historical significance to New York. Built in 1805, the Basilica was the center of Catholic life for the early faithful, mostly from Ireland. Since there was such hatred for immigrants, Catholics and the Irish, the Church was under constant attack in those days by a group known as the Know-Nothings. Funny how history repeats itself! Do you remember the Gangs of New York from Five Points slightly south of this North of Little Italy (Nolita) location? Well, those fun-loving second- and third-generation Americans from the days of the Revolution decided to burn the church down. Luckily, Bishop John Hughes constructed a wall around the church and got the

faithful to defend it. The church also was the location where the baptismal scene in the film, "The Godfather," was shot. In addition, future film-maker Martin Scorsese lived around the corner, went to school there and this was his parish. The Crypt tour takes you down under the church to visit the famous graves of priests, bishops and parishioners who are buried there. I won’t spoil the surprises by letting you know

And once you are finished, you are within steps of some great restaurants. This one is not as frightening as the play above, but it does give you a chill or two! So, there you have it! Prom Proved Worthy of Poseidon It was a prom to remember. Merfolk, cheerleaders, jocks and more re-lived their high school days with nautical flare at the latest Poseidon’s Prom. The annual fundraiser for the Poseidon’s Parade was the biggest success yet. The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade has done it again. The Knights of Columbus was packed on Saturday, February 15 with locals putting their best fin forward with their mermaid-inspired prom looks. With dozens of prizes donated from local businesses, many including local restaurants and a grand raﬄe prize of a $300 gift certificate to Whit’s End, guests pulled out their mermaid purses and purchased raﬄe tickets to help raise money for the annual parade in September.

DJ Paddy Tubz, looking fabulous as a Beauty School Dropout, emceed the event and played music between live music by “Melvin James and the Homecoming Queens.” Guests were also treated to an open bar and light fare, and the chance to bid on some beautiful art pieces, many by Geoff Rawling, who live painted the prom as it happened. With professional photographers taking classic prom pics, it truly felt like a sea star-studded event. The night culminated in the announcement of the prom King and Queen, and none other than Rockaway’s queen, Ginger Ladd and her husband, the Mister Ladd, were crowned. The couple has the honor of leading the parade in September.

Quite Taxing Dear Editor: An open letter to our neighbors and representatives. I receive an estimated property tax assessment from the City of New York for my property located in Broad Channel. This estimate represents a 65% increase from last year. Is there no limit to the percentage the City of New York can raise my taxes? This seems very unfair. What will the increase be next year? 75%? 85%? The home that sat on this property was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and never rebuilt. Screening Limited

Screening asymptomatic patients for cancer is based on a simple premise: cancers that are detected early before they produce symptoms should be easier to cure than those that progress to become clinically detectable. Yet, this seemingly simple idea is fraught with problems. There are several factors that contribute to the difficulty of proving the value of cancer screening. First of all, any test will have false negatives, in which case a patient’s cancer goes undetected. Secondly, tests for cancer are often falsely positive because cancer is relatively rare in an asymptomatic population, meaning that many patients with positive test results will not have cancer. It is unwise, however, to ignore a positive test, so additional testing is warranted. This additional testing may include radiation exposure, surgery, and

other testing that may place the asymptomatic patient at risk for harm, not to mention the psychological harm of telling someone, “you might have cancer.” The most unexpected finding that has emerged from screening studies for breast, lung, and prostate cancer is that an imprecisely defined fraction of the cancers that are detected by screening do not progress to cause symptomatic disease or to kill the patient. For some as yet unknown reason, some tumors simply stop growing. The dilemma is how do we tell the difference between cancers that can kill you and those that cannot. To meaningfully assess the value of cancer screening, the most relevant and clearest measure is an improvement in overall survival. Yet measuring that value may take many decades, so surrogate end points are presumed but not established. Consequently, screening tests that have adverse side effects are widely recommended, they

may be expensive, and have not been shown to improve overall survival. Moreover, some, if not many, people may be harmed. Take, for example, screening for breast cancer. Some women have extremely dense breast tissue. This makes mammography more difficult and more likely to miss a cancer. Because of this, women with very dense breasts have an increased risk of breast cancer. Ultrasound has not proved to be helpful in these situations, so some practitioners have resorted to using MRI scanning to enhance screening. MRI screening is more sensitive for breast cancer screening than mammography, but far less specific. Last November, The New England Journal of Medicine published a study comparing breast cancer screening using mammography alone vs. mammography plus MRI in women with very dense breasts. Of the women who underwent MRI screening, 10% were recalled for abnormal scans, and of those, in the women who had

biopsies based on their MRI findings, only 26% had breast cancer, making the false positive rate for MRI screening 74%! However, almost all of the cancers found by MRI screening were stage 0 or 1, lymph node negative, and ductal carcinoma in situ, which would have been undetected by mammography alone. The ultimate test of value of MRI screening in women with very dense breasts is overall survival, and we won’t have that answer for a very long time, so the dilemma remains. Women with dense breasts and negative mammography who undergo MRI screening have a very low risk of having breast cancer (16.5 per 1000 in this study) and a very high rate of false positive MRI results (74%), but they will have very treatable cancers discovered and cured, which would not have been found with mammography alone. Black History Month: Ways to Celebrate this February By Kami-Leigh Agard

February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements and rich contributions by African Americans in U.S. history. In this Rockaway Times month-long series, we give our readers a smattering of facts, events and films that serve as teaching moments for the entire family. FACTS: Established in the mid-1960s, the Rockaway Community Corporation (RCC) was the first official organization in Rockaway to be led by African Americans. It coordinated poverty-oriented services for the area's low-income population. Some of RCC’s early successful activities included launching a publicity campaign to combat lead poisoning and prevent the closing of the local Legal Aid office. Black History Month is celebrated differently around the world. In the U.S, and Canada, black history is celebrated in

February. However, the U.K., Ireland, and the Netherlands honor it during the month of October. In 2014, Ireland became only the fourth country in the world to celebrate Black History Month. ARMY CORPS TO HOLD STUDY MEETING FEBRUARY 27 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New York District, in cooperation with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, announces a public meeting for the New York New Jersey Harbor and Tributaries (NYNJHAT) Study on Thursday, February 27, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Beach Channel Educational Campus (100-00 Beach Channel Dr.) This coastal storm risk management study covers the New York and New Jersey Harbor and tidally-affected tributaries encompassing all of NYC, the Hudson River to Troy, NY; the lower Passaic, Hackensack, Rahway, and Raritan Rivers; and the Upper and Lower Bays of New York Harbor, Newark, Jamaica, Raritan and Sandy Hook Bays; the Kill Van Kull, Arthur Kill and East River tidal straits; and western Long Island Sound. This public meeting for coastal storm risk management solutions has strong support from

Congressional Representatives Gregory Meeks and Hakeem Jeffries, and Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. This Study covers one of nine focus areas identified in the USACE North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS) Report, issued January 2015, warranting further analysis. Garlic Shrimp over Roasted Chickpeas By Sharon Feldman

Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1-1/2 ounce can of low sodium chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1-1/2 pound peeled and deveined shrimp 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon of lemon zest 4 cloves minced garlic ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes 1-1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1 lemon, sliced ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley (optional) Directions: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Page 35 olive oil and ½ teaspoon salt. Arrange chickpeas in a layer on a sheet pan and bake for 15-20 minute, until golden brown. In a medium bowl, add shrimp, one tablespoon of olive oil, juice of one lemon, lemon zest, garlic and red pepper. Toss to coat. Let marinate 30 minutes. Once chickpeas are brown, spread your shrimp mixture over the roasted chickpeas. Place a few slices of lemon around and on top. Cook another 5-8 minutes until the shrimp are pink in color. Squeeze remaining lemon juice over the top and serve. If you are using parsley, sprinkle over the top.

The high school students in the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity’s (RISE) Shore Corps program have kicked off their Spring 2020 Semester, and it’s off to a great start. The students have

been covering a variety of topics, and their continuous excitement to learn is inspiring. All the students, from those in their first year to those in their fourth, have been diving into the sessions and getting hands-on experience that they can take with them on their personal, educational,

and career journey. The second-year Shore Corps students have been learning the basics of nutrition. This group focuses on food access, urban farming, and cooking healthy meals. The curriculum has covered topics such as salts, sugars, and fats, and the effects they have on the body. Each class begins with stu-

dents learning about a different food group.Then they work with our Culinary Chef Tiffany to get hands-on experience putting the lessons they have learned into practice by making simple, easy, and healthy meals. The students enjoy working together and learning how they can integrate healthy meals into their diets.

The Windy City gifts avid sports fans with two beloved sports institutions. Chicago sports fans not only pay homage to our country’s fallen servicemen in the city’s spectacular lakeside location of Soldier Field. They also adore t—and rightfully so—the friendly confines and ivy covered outfield walls of Wrigley Field. Boston boasts two of our nation’s most venerable venues. During their long and colorful histories, Fenway Park and the Old Boston Garden have each furnished the

Hub City’s sports teams with excitement, and most importantly, plenty of championships.
