Nine-Year-Old Author is Down Right Perfect By Marina Cregan

Connor Rodriguez is not just another ordinary nine-year-old boy. Although diagnosed with Down syndrome, Rodriguez has proven he is ‘Down Right Perfect,’ by becoming a published author. With the help of his parents, Fred and Marian Rodriguez, Connor’s book, “I Am Connor,” was completed and published earlier this month. The book is about Connor, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, and how he is no different from anyone else. Connor Rodriguez loves sports, playing the piano, baking and going to the beach, and had a big goal of putting his story into a book. With the love and support of his parents, they decided to help Connor by making his dreams come true. About a year and a half ago, Connor’s parents created the nonprofit organization, Connor’s Place Inc., to share resources and information with

other parents who have children with disabilities. Connor’s Place Inc. was created because his parents wanted to carve a path for Connor, making his life as easy as possible for a child with Down syndrome. Connor’s Place Inc., may sound familiar, as last year the organization launched Connor’s Cupcakes, a home-based business in which Connor and his

dad bake for local Rockaway families upon request. While baking is one of Connor’s favorite hobbies, he also loves to tell stories, as it’s truly a way to let his imagination run free. Writing a book seemed like a perfect outlet to let that shine and to let others see that kids with Down syndrome, are not so different. “We see people with disabilities, and not just kids but adults too, who are judged because of it. We believe that the key message for this book is to show that all children need a chance to grow and develop, and that Connor, as well as other children with disabilities, are no different from any other child,” Marian Tinnelly-Rodriguez said. When it came time to start writing the book, Connor insisted on being a part of every step of the process. The young entrepreneur asked his parents to read rough drafts of his book back to him every night, so he could dream of what he’d like to add the next day. Inspired by his favorite movie, “The Greatest Showman,” Connor says, “I like to be the ringmaster,” taking charge

and responsibility of the writing process. “The best part of the book-making process was seeing how excited Connor got when hearing his book read out loud,” says his father, Fred. When it came time to transfer the book into a hard copy, his father searched for an illustrator that he felt could bring Connor’s imagination to life. Almost immediately, Fred discovered, Anju Chaudhary, whose illustrations caught his eye because he felt she connected with Connor’s story in a magical way. Not only did Connor and the Rodriguez family love Chaudhary’s illustrations, but Chaudhary found inspiration through Connor. “Connor’s story also sparked her thought, by inspiring her even more through her art,” Marian said. Since the book’s release on Amazon earlier this month, Connor and his family have received a tremendous amount of support from the Rockaway community, as well as people internationally. “It’s all happening so fast,” Marian said. “Rockaway’s a hidden treasure, with such a close-knit community, the response we have received has been amazing.” The initial support from the community has contributed to the book’s success, by extending its audience on a global scale. It even caught the attention of The National Down Syndrome Congress, which recently reached out to the Rodriguez family. If the book is selected by the National Down Syndrome Congress, then “I Am Connor” will be sent to local schools’ libraries within New York State. The book has also been purchased by people living in Germany, Australia, the UK, and Ireland via Amazon.

As if that’s not impressive enough, “I Am Connor,” has recently received offers from two book stores in Ireland, We BookWorm and Good Craic, which are looking to sell the children’s book at both locations. Although Connor’s book has certainly taken off, he remains humble, asking, “Why do all these people want to interview me?” After all, in Connor’s eyes, his book is just another way to express himself, by doing the things he loves, just like any other nine-year-old boy. The young author says he’s just getting started. “I Am Connor” will not be the last book written by young author, Connor Rodriquez. Connor says he has many more ideas and would like to start a book series in the future. Locals Prepare for Less Plastic as Bag Ban Nears By Kami-Leigh Agard

Starting March 1, walking with your own reusable shopping bag will no longer give you street cred for being a tree-hugger or environmentalist. In just one week, stores across New York State will be banned from giving single-use plastic bags to customers at checkout as the NYS Bag Waste Reduction Law goes into effect. Shoppers will need to either bring their own reusable bags or expect to pay five cents or more for each paper bag they receive at checkout. According to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the purpose of the law is to protect the environment and wildlife, and to cut down on waste. “New Yorkers use an estimated 23 billion plastic bags annually— each for about 12 minutes—and approximately 85% of this staggering total ends up in our landfills, recycling machines, waterways, and streets,” a DEC spokesperson said. All plastic carryout bags (other than an exempt bag) are banned

for takeout or delivery, produce bags for bulk items such as fruits and vegetables, and dry cleaner garment bags. Stores will continue to sell packages of plastic bags, such as garbage bags, Ziploc bags, baggies and bags for cleaning up after dogs, according to the DEC spokesperson. Stores covered under the NYS Plastic Bag Reduction, Reuse and Recycling Act will still be required to collect plastic bags and other film plastics from consumers for recycling. (Film plastics include items such as bread bags and plastic wraps that come over cases of water, paper towels and other similar items). Paper bags will be available— but at a price. However, the fivecent paper bag fee does not apply to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children—a nutrition program) recipients. The five-cent fee on paper bags at checkout will go to the NYS Department of Tax and Finance. Edgemere Housing Celebrates Official Opening On Wednesday, February 19, Mayor Bill de Blasio joined City officials and development partners to celebrate the opening of Beach Green Dunes II, a 100 percent affordable housing development in Edgemere. The development is a cutting-edge project that furthers the City’s commitment to building a stronger, more resilient Edgemere community. The City-financed building— developed by L+M Development Partners and designed by Curtis + Ginsberg Architects— brings 127 new homes to Edgemere in addition to retail and outdoor recreation space, including a play area for children. Of the 127 affordable apartments, more than 50 homes are for the lowest income families making less than $50,000 a year, and 13 are set aside for homeless New Yorkers. The eight-story building is also anticipated to receive

Passive House certification, a high-performance building standard for energy efficiency, and integrates resilient design features, which mitigate and manage flooding and storm damage. Councilman Donovan Richards said, “This project is a crucial step in revitalizing Rockaway sustainably. Geothermal energy in affordable housing is a smart way to heat buildings, generate electricity and save money. Families will be able to spend more on other necessities. That is how you revitalize a neighborhood and an economy at large, by starting with the home.”

LOCALS PREPARE Continued from Page 3 profit. So, how are establishments in Rockaway preparing? The Rockaway Times spoke to merchants and shoppers. For one week, starting this Saturday, February 22 through Friday, March 28, both Stop and Shop supermarkets in Arverne and Rockaway Park, and others across the state, will be hosting a reusable bag giveaway. To get the freebie, you have to come in with one bag filled with plastic bags. Supplies are limited, as each location will only be giving out 500 bags a day. Also, only one bag will be issued per customer. If you want more, reusable bags can also be purchased for the low price of two for $1. KeyFood already has its paper bags in stock and is selling reusable bags for $0.99 each. Manager Enrique Jimenez believes that the plastic bag ban will be a rude awakening for many customers, and encourages everyone to get in the practice of walking with their own bags. “In the last three to four weeks, I see more people

bringing their own bags. However, of course, you have customers that will come in, just buy one item, and walk out with a plastic bag. As retailers we will not make any profit from selling paper bags as the money goes straight to the government. I think it’s a good idea for customers to bring their own bags.� Walgreens (which assumed ownership of both Rite Aid and Duane Reade), will have paper bags for retail in all of their stores. According to the press officer, “We will have different price points for the paper bags respective to the seven counties in NYS. We are still determining how we are going to price the bag.� Though bigger corporations seem to be prepared for the single-use plastic bag ban, smaller mom-and-pop shops feel like they’ve been bagged by the ban. An owner of a Rockaway Beach beauty supply store shared that for shops of his size, they most likely will have to eat the cost of the paper bags. “This will be a difficult transition for shops like mine. When it comes to a neighborhood store, locals want to be treated

like locals. When the state enacts laws like these, smaller stores are always left behind. I’m sure many of us are not even going to sell the paper bags, we’re probably going to just give them to customers for free and eat the cost,� he said. A Rockaway Beach Boulevard deli owner had the same sentiments. “As a small business, I don’t use a lot of bags, so it won’t affect me like larger retailers such as supermarkets. But I don’t know how customers will feel after I tell them that now I have to charge them for a small paper bag. I may even have to pay for the bag myself, meaning I’m losing money now. The plastic bags are cheaper, but I agree that they aren’t good for the environment. I’m doubtful about the city’s true intentions because if they are so concerned about plastic destroying the environment, why charge for the paper bags? Should be free,� he said. A Howard Beach wine shop owner is just as cynical about the true intentions of the ban. He said, “In the ‘80s, we stopped using paper bags to save the trees, now they want to stop us from using plastic bags to save the ocean.

Page 5 Who really profits from this ban?� Arverne resident Florence Ferguson is optimistic that banning single-use plastic bags is a start, but she too is leery about what she deems as hypocrisy. “Are plastic bags really the enemy? What about plastic straws, plastic food containers, plastic garbage and recycling bags, plastic cutlery that we see blown in the ocean, our beaches and green spaces? What first needs to be planted in people is a change of mindset. We love convenience that plastic has provided. People now not only have to think differently, but live differently by embracing the actions of reusing and recycling. The plastic bag ban is a start, but we have a long way to go.� she said. No matter your thoughts on plastic, be prepared. As more states across the country and in the world are proclaiming bans on single-use plastic bags, maybe hold on to the ones you have. Coco Makes Reading Less Ruff By Katie McFadden

Everyone loves storytime. Even one listener who wears a fur coat, loves snacks and occasionally rolls over for belly rubs between sentences. Coco can’t read himself, but at Queens Library’s Seaside Branch, this therapy dog’s ears are perked and ready to listen to whatever tale kids choose to read to their new tail-wagging companion. Reading out loud can be a challenge for some kids but Coco, and his handler, Liz Schaible, have been aiming to make the experience a little less intimidating through New York Therapy Animals’ Reading Education Assistance® (R.E.A.D.®) program. Almost every Saturday morning, this team volunteers their time at the library to sit down with kids from kindergarten to fourth grade and help them become more comfortable with reading to an audience, something that comes easier with a non-

judgmental audience. After all, Coco won’t laugh when a child stutters or stumbles over a word they’re not familiar with, but he may lend a paw of support. Since 1999, therapy dog teams across the country have been heading to schools, libraries and other locations, to help children improve their read-

ing, communication and social skills in a calm and relaxing atmosphere through the Intermountain Therapy Animals' R.E.A.D program. Since this past fall, the Seaside Branch has offered this program to locals and Coco already has a fan club. “We have a little boy that comes each week. His reading

is already incredible, but I think he just likes sitting there and reading to Coco. However, his brother, who is only about three and can’t read yet, will also pick a book and sits down with Coco to show him the pictures,” Schaible said. Those boys are Charles and Michael Madden, of Broad Channel, who regularly take advantage of local library programs. “I’m all about reading and I think the more kids read, the better,” the boys’ mother, Martina Madden, said. “My kids also like dogs, especially Coco.” Continued on page 7

She follows along when Charlie reads and if he gets stuck on a word, she helps him out,” Madden explained. Schaible also brings the focus back to Coco to make kids more comfortable. “I try to gear it back to Coco. Like I’ll say, ‘what do you think that means? Maybe Coco doesn’t understand that word, can you explain it?’ I bring it back to Coco so it’s less intimidating for the kids,” Schaible said. During each hour-long session at the library, kids who sign up for the program have up to 15 minutes to read a book of their choice to Coco, as he sits between the child and Schaible. child as they navigate their way through a story and become more acclimated with speaking out loud in public. Nancy George-Michalson, executive director of New York Therapy Animals, a nonprofit organization made up of more than 170 therapy dog teams that make visits across the city, explained some of the benefits of kids being able to read to a dog. “Many of these children that participate might be afraid to read out loud and may be shy, but here they’re reading to a nonjudgmental therapy dog that helps kids to relax and lower their stress levels, so they can experience the joy of reading. It’s inspiring and motivating for these

kids,” George-Michalson said. In her four years of working as part of a R.E.A.D. team, Schaible says she has seen firsthand the benefits of the program at work. “I was working with one little first-grade girl at Seaside in the fall who was using very simple books. I could see she was struggling. But after three weeks of coming back each week, I started to see an improvement. Of course, it also could have been from being at school, but I believe the program helped boost her confidence,” Schaible said. Programs such as R.E.A.D. also help boost the libraries that they come to. “We love to offer these unique services that we know will benefit kids in the community,” Jose Dela Cruz, manager of Seaside, said. “And it draws in parents and kids to come here on a Saturday. After all, who doesn’t love dogs?” So far, kids are loving Coco. And there is plenty of opportunity for more kids to get to know him. Coco and Schai-

Page 7 ble will be at the Seaside library (116-15 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) every Saturday at 11 a.m., through April 4. They will then take a little break before returning on April 25 and continuing at least through May 16. New York Therapy Animals (NYTA) is always welcoming new therapy dog teams. Those who have a well-behaved dog and wouldn’t mind volunteering their time, can go through a seven-week training session with their furry friend to become a NYTA team. Therapy dog teams often visit places to help people feel more relaxed such as city hospitals, schools, homeless shelters, nursing homes and even the NYC Marathon, where dogs help calm runners from around the world before their big race. TNR Workshop Aims to Help Locals Humanely Handle Cat Colonies By Katie McFadden

Rockaway’s cat colonies can be a cause of contention, but they don’t have to be. A program coming to Peninsula Library this weekend aims to help locals tackle growing feral feline populations in a humane way. On Saturday, February 22, the Peninsula branch of Queens Library (92-25 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) is offering a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) certification workshop to teach locals about humane ways to curb the growth of stray cat populations. The program begins at 11 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m. Throughout the workshop, attendees will learn about feral cats, the steps of humane trapping and pre- and postspay/neuter surgery care, practice using box traps for cats, learning how to care for cat colonies, and how to build good relationships with neighbors throughout the TNR process and how to help the cats be good neighbors. At the end of the program, attendees will become Certified TNR Caretakers. Once a Certified TNR Caretaker, participants can be eligible for free spay/neuter, trap loans, transport of cats and traps, specialty training workshops, community outreach materials, TNR Caretaker Update newsletter, networking opportunities, dedicated NYC Feral Cat Initiative help desk, and other services and sup-

port within the five boroughs of New York City provided by the NYC Feral Cat Initiative of Bideawee, the ASPCA, and other area organizations. What are the benefits of TNR? According to NYCFCI, “In TNR, entire colonies of community cats are trapped, sterilized, vaccinated, eartipped, and returned to their territory of origin. TNR halts reproduction and many of the nuisance behaviors associated with unneutered cats, such as yowling, fighting, and marking territory. The cats are healthier, free from the stresses of mating and motherhood. TNR also includes colony management to ensure the cats’ well-being and their peaceful coexistence with the rest of the community.” This program is presented by the NYC Feral Cat Initiative, and designed by Alley Cat Allies, the ASPCA, and the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. The workshop will be taught by Carole Milker and Nancy Fahnestock, CSM Stray Foundation. The program is open to those 18 and older. Attendees are advised to not bring animals to the library. There is no fee to attend the workshop, but advanced registration is required. Hair Ye Hair Ye - Richie’s Back By Marina Cregan

Hair we are, finally. Ladies, you can curl up and dye. All is right in the world for the lovely ladies of Rockaway. Rockaway born and bred, and renowned hair stylist, Richie O'Connor, will make his long-awaited return to Mr. Rocco’s on Beach 116th Street, Thursday, February 20. After wrist pain and surgery put him on the sidelines for six long months, O’Connor will finally take charge of his chair at the salon yet again. This past summer, O’Connor’s career was put on hold due to a severe injury on his right wrist. Throughout his 25+ years as a hairdresser, he had developed arthritis in the wrist, but assumed it was no big deal. However, the arthritis caught up to him, and on August 28, (the day some Rockaway ladies will never forget, I’m sure), O’Connor twisted and sprained his wrist, causing his

wrong with O’Connor’s wrist, which made him think he’d be back to work in no time. When the test results finally came in early October, it became clear that surgery was needed to fix the hairdresser’s wrist. With the surgery date set for December 6, panic began to set in for O’Connor upon realizing how long his recovery would take. But just as the reality of being out of work for many months ahead set in, Rockaway locals jumped at the opportunity to help O’Connor during the long process. Upon hearing about O’Connor’s predicament, life-long friends and loyal clients, Lynda McCarthy-Collins and Claire Conti, organized a GoFundMe page to help with O’Connor’s medical bills and supplement his income. On October 13, McRichie O'Connor Carthy-Collins launched the GoFundMe page titled, “Savbones to fuse together. At first ing Slim-Hairdresser Help,� it took a long time for doctors with a total goal of $5000. But to figure out what exactly was with Rockaway being the giv-

ing community that it is, the GoFundMe page raised nearly triple the amount. The page was set up on a Sunday morning, and within two hours Slim was saved, by already passing its $5000 goal. With a grand total of $14,885 raised, O’Connor says he is, “Certainly overwhelmed with the love and support I received from the community.� After a successful surgery, O’Connor was put in a hard cast until January 27. Once the cast was removed, O’Connor was eager to jump right into physical therapy so he could get back to work as soon as possible. For years, O’Connor has helped many women look their best with his jaw-dropping hair-dos, whether it be fun updos for bridal parties, or just your average cut and blowout. My husband is wheelchair bound and due to some health issues on top of that, he has not been able to get out of the house for quite a while. Last month, we borrowed a wheelchair van and went to a doctor’s appointment and since it was such a nice day, we thought we

would try to visit the Harbor Light afterwards. We had not been there since Superstorm Sandy. It was about 3 p.m. and we arrived to learn that they are not really open at that time on a weekday. Nevertheless, an employee came out and he helped us with the wheelchair lift and welcomed us warmly. We got inside and one of the employees who was attempting to set up for the evening, instead waited on us and took our orders and treated us marvelously. The food was as wonderful as I remembered it from before the flood, and between the gracious and kind service we received from everyone at the Harbor Light, and the food being just delicious, it ended up being a fantastic lunch. I so appreciate everyone there and thanks to them for making my husband’s first outing in months, so perfect. Eileen Van Note

Charity guest bartending duo, Joanne Smith and Mary Ehrhart, were at it again, raising funds for an important cause. On Saturday, February 15, the pair joined forces with veteran bartender, George Ferguson, at RBQ. In December, the trio raised money for Siobhan O’Sullivan, a courageous fifthgrade cancer survivor. This time they were raising money for Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters, the organization fighting against the proposed homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street. The funds they raised were donated toward the legal fees to fight against the shelter opening. The event, sponsored by RBQ proprietor John Moroney, was well received. Attendance was high and the crowd enjoyed cold beer, barbecue, and listened to the music of Gerald

Bair. The theme of the event was Valentine Red and the bartenders were celebrating the theme by showing their “Love for the Rockaway Community.� Moroney also sold raffles for an RBQ gift card and 50/50s to help boost the fundraiser. Community activist, Torey Schnupp, and Community Board 14 and Rockaway Beach Civic Association member, John Cori, were among the many in attendance. Schnupp said, “We will do everything we can to stop the shelter from opening. If it does open, we will continue to pursue every avenue we have to move to close it down.� Attorney Mike Scala, who represents RSNS, sent his appreciation for the event via Facebook saying, “Have a good event today! Far Rock Man Sentenced for Sexual Contact with Minor A Far Rockaway man will serve his time for a horrendous crime. On Tuesday, February 11, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that a 40-year-old Far Rockaway man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted at trial for course of sexual conduct against a child in the first degree. The District Attorney identified the defendant as Joseph Petty, 40, of Beach 20th Street. Last month, Petty was convicted of sexual conduct against a child in the first degree. Petty will serve 25 years, and then another 10 years of post release supervision. Petty will also be required to register as a sex offender. According to a press release from the DA’s office, the defendant in this case moved

into his girlfriend’s home in Jamaica, Queens, and soon afterwards began to go into the child’s room at night. On various occasions for more than three months, Joseph Petty touched the youngster’s genitals and her chest area with both his hands and at times his mouth and had sexual contact with the girl. The sexual contact occurred between October 2014 and January 2015. District Attorney Katz said, “The guilty verdict handed down by the jury last month held this defendant responsible for violating this little girl, who was touched inappropriately by this defendant on multiple occasions. The child was just 10 years old when the abuse began. Today’s sentencing punishes the defendant for his criminal actions.”

Norovirus

Ask the DOC

Foodborne illness is common in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control, or CDC, estimates that there are 48 million cases of foodborne illness each year in the U.S., with 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. The five most common causes of foodborne illness are norovirus, salmonella, clostridium perfringens, campylobacter, and staphylococcus aureus. All are caused by contact with an infected person, an infected food or surface, or consumption of infected food or liquid. Together, these diseases are commonly called, “food poisoning,� a “stomach flu,� or a “stomach bug.� Hospitalization is often needed due to dehydration and the very young and very old are most susceptible. Death may be caused by dehydration or kidney failure, shock, or vascular collapse from toxins related to the infection. This is especially

true with staph aureus infections. As norovirus is the most common foodborne illness, I would like to discuss it today. Norovirus is often referred to as the “cruise ship virus,� however cruise ship outbreaks are responsible for only 1% of cases. Norovirus is unrelated to the influenza virus which causes the flu. Outbreaks are typically seen from November to April but can be seen at any time of the year. Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and abdominal pain. Other symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and headache. Like most foodborne illnesses, norovirus cases are most frequently seen in food service areas like restaurants, cafeterias, and catered events, healthcare facilities, schools and childcare facilities, summer camps, and cruise ships. Norovirus is highly contagious. If food is prepared by an infected person, merely touching that food, for example raw fruit, and then putting your hands in

your mouth or on your lips will transmit the virus to you. Likewise, consuming contaminated food or drink will transmit the virus, as will touching a surface that a contaminated person touched (i.e. doorknobs). Symptoms usually start 12 to 48 hours after exposure and typically last one to three days. There is no treatment for norovirus. Antibiotics are ineffective. The mainstay of treatment is hydration. Preventing transmission of the virus is important in reducing the number of cases. If you are infected, do not prepare food for anyone for at least two days after symptoms subside. If someone in your house becomes infected, avoid direct contact with that person, wash your hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and warm water (alcohol-based hand sanitizers are less effective at killing the virus), and wash your clothes and the clothes of the infected person in hot water. Clean all surfaces with a chlo-

rine bleach-containing solution or a disinfectant that is certified effective against norovirus, especially if an infected person vomited or had diarrhea on it. To avoid being infected in areas where norovirus is common, like summer camps and cruise ships, there are a few rules of thumb to follow. First, wash your hands frequently, especially after touching common areas like doorknobs and tables. If you see someone vomiting or having diarrhea, leave the area immediately (the virus may be aerosolized by vomiting). Do not share food or utensils and avoid direct personal contact (like handshakes). Avoid putting your hands in or near your mouth. Lastly, as there are many forms of norovirus, having had the virus does not provide immunity to being infected again. trance where the drumming became louder. A group of boys were sitting under a tree with several instruments and girls, again in blue dresses, were practicing a dance. We didn’t know it at the time, but they were preparing for a celebration the following day when the village chief and his entourage would be visiting and honoring us with dances, music and poems. We could hardly move! It was slow going because there was always someone new to green Neem trees out front and hug and say how happy we two other smaller long build- were to be here. There were two signs posted showing the different times that classes were able to use the facility. Some were wearing cobalt blue dresses and shirts and tan shorts, which are the official uniforms of the school district, others were in bright green, yellow, some raggedy and torn, the girls mostly in dresses. Hands up, they all waved at the camera and wanted to hug and be held. We each scooped up a small child and made our way slowly, through good natured jostling and pushing and just an ever-increasing sea of children, down towards the library en-

With the help of the kits, these girls would be able to stay in school all year and would hopefully graduate. We read to groups of students in the cool library out of the sun’s glare and it felt like such a nurturing space. A sanctuary, where these kids could be safe and sit and learn, away from the chaos of life for a little while. They read to us too, earnestly in lilting Ghananian accents. The rowdy boys were quiet and so smart and keen to learn. Later on, the whole school assembled outside, and the Chief arrived along with his First Wife and household, and we sat under the shade of the trees and watched the dancing and heard the recitations. Susy and I were presented with a poster that read, “We have a whole new place to search for knowledge. Thank you. Yeda mo ase.”

A Library in West Africa By Sarah Arikian

The dusty car juddered to a stop after a five-hour drive from the capital city of Accra, Ghana, grinding over potholed roads which kicked up the reddish dust from the dry soil. The cracked windshield was caked in dirt and sand from the Harmattan winds that had been enveloping Ghana for a few weeks now, carrying sand from the Sahara Desert to the north, along with the dry, hot air. As the wipers streaked an opening, the large rectangular building came into focus and it was a wonderful surprise! For four years, my friend, Susy, and I had been involved in a project for Nurturing Nations (www.nurturingnations. org), to build and stock a library in this rural area of Ghana, the village of Assin Adadientem, that serves about 40 nearby settlements. This was our first visit. Over the years, we have seen videos and photos of the villagers getting together to build the space and we saw the empty shelves and knew we had to help. We collected more than 6,000 books from our friends in Rockaway and throughout New York, and donations from wider afield and shipped them to Tema and anxiously waited for news that the books had been collected from the port after months in transit, been unpacked, and were now being put to good use. It’s been hard getting feedback, because the location is so remote and we didn’t know what to expect on this hot and dusty morning in January. That first glimpse of the building was exciting: it’s real! It’s big, and a lovely yellow sandy color, with some large

and packed with books! Floor to ceiling, there were paperbacks, hardbacks, encyclopedias, books of reference, novels, the Eyewitness series, early readers, board books, big, small, higgledy-piggledy and neat, on shelves and on the two really nice long tables and benches. Two charming teachers greeted us, and we turned around and all the children were quietly waiting outside, which really struck us compared to the noise and commotion of our arrival. We looked around in awe, and I spotted some of the books I had sent from my own library—books I had read to my children.

Veterans Memorial Circle

Do you know that area on Rockaway Beach Blvd. that has two semi-circular paths bounded by Beach 120th Street and 121st Street? There are London Plane trees all around it, American flags, benches, and sometimes flowers. I never really stopped to look around. I never looked at the concrete and metal markers surrounding both sides of the park. It’s worth a look, and maybe more. Those markers are in honor of fallen World War II soldiers who lost their lives defending our right to live in the freedom that we sometimes take for granted. There are 33 of those plaques, and recently three more were added, Marine Corps Lance Corporal Michael Glover; Army 1st Class

Private John McGonigal and Dennis Connor who perished on the SS Dorchester in 1943. All of those honored made the supreme sacrifice. Too often we take these things for granted, especially when we live in a democracy that allows us to choose our leaders. Memorial Circle, as a place of honor, has a long history, going back to 1947 when the ladies of the Belle Harbor Garden Club dedicated the Circle. The Circle dates back to the early 1900s when it was part of the development of the local real estate environment. The Belle Harbor Garden Club, with the help of the Jewish War Veterans, maintained the site. More recently, the Friends of Memorial Circle have cared for the Circle and its grounds. It’s amazing to me what incredible things can be accomplished by everyday people who take the time and energy to do good works. They never ask for any thanks, they just do the right thing. The Friends of Memorial Circle is

a 501(c)3 charitable organization that accepts donations to help defray the costs of maintaining the Circle. More recently, the markers had fallen into disrepair due mainly to the ground sinking around them. Soil erosion is generally a bigger job than the usual kind of maintenance and requires more professional help. Luckily for Rockaway, the Parks Department has a program designed specifically for the care and maintenance of these types of markers. The NYC Park’s Citywide Monuments Conservation Program (CMCP) was designed to provide high quality care for upwards of 500 sites annually around the city. And Memorial Circle is one of those locations. Typically, they simply clean and re-wax the markers, but last year they recognized that many of the markers were sinking, so they recently completed a repair project to reset nearly half the markers evenly on a bed of gravel, raising them al-

most six inches up so that you can actually see and read them. Upon inspection, it looks like they did a splendid job. Rockaway has many such monuments dotted around the beach; it sometimes seems that this small peninsula contributes in a great proportion to these ultimate sacrifices. Or maybe it’s just that we have a lot of everyday heroes walking among us who care deeply about our community, our town, our country. We are certainly blessed in that regard. And I’m glad that after being a resident here for almost forty years, I finally stopped to read each of those plaques and to offer my thanks to those that gave their lives. I salute the Parks Department for doing a terrific job and without any fanfare, and I certainly salute those who take the time to make sure that the Circle provides the dignity it so richly deserves without ever asking for thanks. According to a recent survey, 40% of straight couples and 65% of same-sex couples meet online. There are almost 8,000 dating sites worldwide and more opportunities through social networking sites. Sites include mainstream ones like Match.com, special interest ones like Gaydar (as the name suggests) or RocknRollDating (for musically compatible couples of any sexual preference, including “polyamorous”), and even ones for married folks seeking extramarital activity, like Ashley Madison. Online dating has its risks. Daters can be exposed to false information (like fake user profiles), threats to physical safety, exposure of personal information, data security vulnerabilities, and “romance scams,” among others. A Congressional subcommit-

tee recently announced an investigation into safety concerns prompted by the prevalence of sex offenders on free dating sites, the use of dating sites by minors, and the sale or sharing of users’ personal information. The investigation was sparked by a recent Columbia Journalism/ProPublica investigation revealing that Match Group, the industry leader with $1.7 billion in annual revenues and the owner of over 40 dating platforms, screens for registered sex offenders on its paid Match app but not on any of its free apps, including Tinder, OkCupid, and PlentyofFish. Dating sites also raise information privacy and security issues. Once you provide personal information for your profile and the matching algorithm, the information is out of your control. Even if you cancel your membership, the dating site may retain it permanently. Depending upon a site’s privacy practices, the government, a prospective

employer, or even data brokers that use personal info for marketing purposes may obtain your information. According to the FBI, online daters can be also exposed to “romance scams” in which fraudsters strike up online relationships to steal victims’ money. According to a 2019 FTC report, in 2018, Americans lost $143 million to these scams. Last week, media reported that a scammer had conned an 80-year-old Oregon widower out of $200,000, purportedly as an investment to cover the costs to ship a 500ton sculpture from China to the Metropolitan Museum. Romance scams typically target older people. A scammer wins the victim’s emotions and trust, claims to have a financial crisis and then asks for money. After the victim complies, his/her money and “romance” are gone. Because the victim generally wires funds overseas or through third parties, it is very difficult

to trace the money and find the scammer. To avoid falling victim to a romance scam, think before you act. Don’t send money to people you don’t know or haven’t met in person, including through intermediaries. Be cautious about sharing your personal and financial information. Keep copies of all communications. If you think you’ve become involved with a scammer, report them to local law enforcement and regulators, the online dating site, the FTC, and the FBI. A list recently released by a company called HighSpeedInternet.com ranks Maine the safest state for online dating and Alaska the most dangerous. New York is ranked as the eighth most dangerous state. While singles today are likely to meet a future partner online, predators lurk on these sites. Online dating can be a great way to meet people but be vigilant of your safety and personal information.

February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements and rich contributions by African Americans in U.S. history. In this Rockaway Times month-long series, we give our readers a smattering of facts, events and films that serve as teaching moments for the entire family. FACTS: In 1931, the Working Girls Cooperative League, later renamed the Women’s Industrial Service League, Inc., was born in Far Rockaway. Eleanor B. Hull, together with 13 other African American women, founded the organization after witnessing the squalid living conditions, lack of year-round employment opportunities and poor healthcare blacks endured. From purchasing their own building to house homeless women, joining forces with the community to fight for fair housing and healthcare, and organizing voter drives, the feats WISL accomplished are nothing short of remarkable, espe-

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Supporting Our Loved Ones with Autism WITH GRIEF AND LOSS Recently a dear friend and Rockaway Beach Autism Families member relayed to me the unfortunate news that her son’s father had passed away. He had cancer. For the next few days, I wondered how the young man, who is on the autism spectrum, was processing the death of his father. I wondered if her son shed any tears or if he harbors feelings of anger or even fear? The mom wore her feelings on her sleeve by outwardly crying, but how was her son processing the reality that his dad was gone? Did he feel like he fell down a rabbit hole, stumbling into a bizarre, disorienting alternate reality that his father was gone not for a few days or weeks, but forever? To get a semblance of what he was feeling and how I can possibly help support the family, I looked into ways we can help individuals with autism in understanding death and processing feelings of loss. We all grieve differently. I personally have a delayed reaction, when in the moment I just feel cold, and weeks later break down in reaction to a sense memory, like a song or even a gray, rainy day. Grief is natural and normal, and so are the resulting feelings, but for individuals on the autism spectrum, their grief process may be a bit more complicated, espe-

cially in light of the challenges they face with social interaction, difficulty with changes in routine, unusually strong reactions to one or more of their five senses and emotional expression. An Autism Spectrum Therapies blog post, “HOW TO SUPPORT KIDS WITH AUTISM THROUGH GRIEF AND LOSS,” offered some insightful information: “Talk to your kids clearly and in real terms about death. Using words like ‘lost’ or ‘passed’ can be confusing to our kids. Also, grief is a process that demands ritual. This includes but is not limited to the funeral and other religious practices. You will want to prepare your child for what to expect at a funeral or other event and then let them choose if they want to participate. It is also wise to have support and back-up plans for the child should they choose to leave. If the child is grieving, it is likely that you, the parent, are also grieving and you need to take care of yourself as well as your child. Connecting with an item owned by the deceased, cooking a favorite meal and spending time with loved ones can all be an opportunity to create ritual. In addition, creative expression is encouraged as journaling and art can be very therapeutic. These rituals create an

opening so the grieving individual can be present with their feelings. Allowing these moments and then concluding the ritual (cleaning up the meal, putting away the personal item, etc.) allows you to transition back into your typical routine.” I reflected on when my grandfather passed away in 2007. Though I was excited to be traveling to Manchester, England and reuniting with family, I felt like some of the magic of being home with them was gone. The death of a parent or other important person in a child’s life has been noted to be one of the most frequently reported disruptive childhood experiences. However, as an understanding and empathetic community, we can support families and their autistic loved ones by offering connection and healing through educating ourselves and being sensitive to their grieving process. Where does our food come from? As we stroll through the aisles of supermarkets, looking for our next meal or a quick snack, we often do not examine the labels or wonder where and how the produce we eat was grown and transported to the supermarket. The Rocka-

way Peninsula is considered a food desert, or an urban area in which it is difficult to buy good-quality or affordable fresh food. Hydroponics, like our system here at RISE, is one method of bringing fresh produce to urban communities. A hydroponics system grows plants without soil using a solution of water and nutrients. The benefits of this system include less water usage, less space needed, and

opportunities for indoor farming. For the month of February, students participating in the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity’s (RISE) Living Classroom program will be focusing on the topics of farming, hydroponics, and food justice. Students will also have the opportunity to prepare their own pizza, topped with greens from RISE’s hydroponic system.

Living Classroom primarily allows local teachers to bring their classes to the RISE Center for engaging workshops that enable students to explore challenging social and environmental issues and foster an appreciation for nature. From The Mike Madness Up Ahead By Jim Sweeney

It’s on the way! March Madness, the “indescribably wonderful illness” that attacks college basketball fans every spring and renders them powerless, easily claims the top spot in my Best About Sports. Far worse than any cold, virus or flu, this early spring sickness devours energy and cripples logical thinking. It even steals away any thought of living a normal existence for the next 30 days of your

life. Yes, the wonderful craziness that CBS Sports calls the trademarked term, “March Madness,” for its NCAA College Basketball Tournament coverage is arguably the most popular event in all of sports. March Madness appears every year at the same time and strikes millions of college basketball fans. It then disappears around midnight every first Monday in April. With its vice-like grip, March Madness runs uncontrollably through your veins. Symp-

toms like sleep loss, emotion instability and erratic behavior immediately overtake victims. Those struck with this famous sickness find themselves mumbling scores, stats, pre-game analysis and RPI ratings. They debate conference strength of schedule and boldly predicting regional brackets. Like zombies, victims of March Madness barely get through mid-March and into early April without nibbling on nails and suffering some sort of indigestion. They never part with their remotes. They divide their time between watching ESPN on their big LCD TV screens, ESPN. com on smaller LCDs, on WiFi notebooks and ESPN Mobile on even tinier LCD screens on pocket-sized iPhones. Forget about regular or normal relationships, too. Those struck by March Madness usually communicate most with others sharing the same physical condition. Sweating profusely and fidgeting inces-

santly, they text and mumble phrases like Sweet 16; another Cinderella advances; buzzer beater; raining 3’s; diaper dandies, shooting out the lights; and double overtime barn burner. Wow! What a sickness! Bring it on and slay me every March. Give me a double dose and don’t ever try to cure me. Please don’t stop the Madness. Don’t ever stop March Madness. I just love this disease, and probably like you, I don’t ever want to be cured of it. Is February over yet? Without doubt, March Madness claims the Number One spot in my book.
