Rockablue Makes Its Debut

The Rockaway Times

By Katie McFadden

In Rockaway, new businesses open and old ones close. It’s not often that one makes a comeback. Those who remember Clothesliner on Beach 116th Street can take a trip down memory lane and those craving a new place to pick up a cute, unique outfit, will be happy to know there’s another option in Rockaway. Israel Waks is back and has started anew with Rockablue. In 1976, Israel Waks took a chance on bringing fashion to Beach 116th Street. “It was a fluke. I met a guy selling Indian blouses and picked up some stuff at a flea market and I took a spot on 116th, and when I opened, everyone loved it. I was buying dresses in August to sell when most stores would be getting rid of that stuff, but it was summertime in Rockaway,” Waks said. Clothesliner filled a need on the peninsula, offering quality clothes at affordable prices. That gamble that Waks took, would carry him through 2009, when he closed Clothesliner due to personal reasons, and moved to Florida. However, Rockaway called him back, and Waks wanted more than retired life had to offer. “I felt like I wanted to do something with my time. You feel alive when you’re doing something,” he said. Then a spot at 114-13 Rockaway Beach Blvd. gave him the opportunity to bring fashion back to Rockaway once again. Waks signed a lease and built out the boulevard spot within 10 days. This time, he wanted to give it a new name. “I didn’t want to call it Clothesliner. It had its ups and downs and it was too old fashioned, so I wanted something that would click with people and let them know where we come from,” he said. So he called it Rockablue, paying homage to the place where he got his start— Rockaway—and the color of something many in town love—the ocean. Rockablue officially opened on Saturday, February 22, once again offering unique

styles for women, at affordable prices. “Fashion is my love. We carry unique stuff. We don’t carry basic stuff you can find at any store. We have 250 to 300 styles, and about 25 styles of shoes, plus bags, sunglasses, necklaces, scarves, earrings and more,” Waks said. The clothing will appeal to anyone from teenagers to older women looking for a contemporary look, from junior sizes to extra-large. The styles range from unique, vintage pieces to current trends. After more than 40 years of experience in the fashion world, Waks has a knack for choosing pieces that will speak to women. “I can

tell when I hang the stuff if it’s right or wrong,” he said. New pieces will be added each week, so every time a shopper comes in, they may have a chance to see something new. And the best part? The price points. Before Clothesliner closed, women could grab a nice piece for about $20. More than a decade later, the prices haven’t changed much. “The price is comfortable. All clothes range from $15 to $30,” Waks said. “I’m not doing this to make money,” Waks explained. “I’m doing it for a cause, to come out and feel good about yourself for

doing something. I just want this to be another place where people can have fun, come by with a bike or pass by and maybe something will catch your eye. It’s a place where you can just come and look and have fun.” As word spreads that Waks is back, the new shop has been drawing women in to take a look and to see an old friend. On Monday morning, one return customer was beaming with enthusiasm over having a piece of the Clothesliner back in town. “Look how nice everything is! I’m so happy to have a cool little place to come to again. This is exactly what I wanted for my son’s graduation,” she said, holding up a pair of baby blue pants. “I’m so happy you’re open again, we need this kind of place here,” she told Waks. For Waks, that reaction served as reassurance that opening a new place was a good choice. “Seeing women like this, being so excited for clothes, makes me happy. I must have done something right back then for her to come in and have that reaction,” he said. Waks says he hopes to see more of that as he settles in to his new location. “I want people to come in here and be overwhelmed. I like to see people get excited. We’re all humans and we can all use some cheering up,” he said. Rockablue is located at 114-13 Rockaway Beach Blvd. Current hours are 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, but hours may change. To reach the shop, call 347-834-4725.

Shelter Update: The Men Move In By Katie McFadden

A contract hasn’t been signed, but the homeless are moving in. On Friday, February 21, those behind Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters (RSNS), let the community know that the Department of Buildings had granted a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) for the 226 Beach 101st Shelter, which would allow homeless men to start moving in to the facility. In the early morning hours of February 22, it was all but confirmed when neighbors spotted a school bus unloading about eight men who entered the building at around 2 a.m. In a statement to The Rockaway Times, the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) confirmed the opening saying, “Last week, we proudly opened our doors at 226 Beach 101st Street, the first and only transitional housing facility serving single adults in the Far Rocka-

way community, which is now providing high-quality shelter to individuals experiencing homelessness as they work hard to restabilize their lives. We look forward to welcoming and supporting more neighbors in need at this location over the next few weeks. Working together with service provider, Black Vets for

Social Justice, and the community, through collaborative support and compassion, we’re confident that we will make this the best experience it can be for these individuals as they get back on their feet. However, before the opening, the contract for the shelter hadn’t even crossed Comptroller Scott Stringer’s desk yet. The move comes just a few days after a similar event at a new shelter in Glendale, in which residents were also brought to the shelter overnight, despite no contract being signed and no CofO. “It started operating without Scott Stringer registering the contract, meaning getting funding from taxpayer dollars. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did the same thing in Rockaway. They are bypassing the formal process of getting a contract registered and instead are either choosing to be self-funded, or according to rumors from Glendale, they’re not paying staff, but will pay them retroactively once a contract is signed,

Torey Schnupp, a lead activist behind RSNS explained. A temporary CofO will allow the vendor to move up to 50 of the 108 residents in, at a rate of 10 per month. Schnupp added that Stringer received the contract for the Rockaway shelter on Monday, February 24. She explained that the shelter is not guaranteed funding without a thorough review of the financial information for the nonprofit service provider, Black Veterans for Social Justice. RSNS has provided information from its own thorough review to Stringer’s office in the hopes that it will help them identify financial discrepancies. Stringer’s office has 30 days to respond to the contract by either signing it, or not signing it, which would automatically approve the contract, or by requesting additional information on the contract, something that the mayor has the power to override. Monday night’s Queens Borough President (QBP) candidate’s forum may have taken place in a church, but that didn’t stop candidates from turning it into a fiery debate. On Monday, February 24, all six candidates running for Queens Borough President were invited to Macedonia Baptist Church on Beach 67th Street for a forum hosted by the Rockaway Youth Task Force (RYTF), however Democrats, Elizabeth Crowley, Anthony Miranda and Donovan Richards, were the only ones to attend. The church was packed with locals waiting to hear what they had to say to decide who they will vote for in the special election on March 24. The forum got off to a late start, and began with a prayer and a reminder to all in the building to be respectful—yet that didn’t keep candidates from making jibes and personal attacks, and guests from applauding and booing in response. The forum kicked off with opening statements from each candidate. Crowley, a former councilwoman who lives in Glendale, explained her personal history of growing up in a family of 15 children, mostly raised by her mother as her father passed away early. As a union supporter, standing for the working people, Crowley said she was elected as the first woman, the first Democrat and the first union member in her district in 2009. Anthony Miranda, from Fresh Meadows, a retired NYPD police officer and founder of the National Latino Officers Association, explained his time fighting against discrimination within the NYPD. As he’s never been a politician, Miranda explained that he aims to serve as a voice for Queens’ constituents who feel they haven’t been heard by those who’ve been in office. Councilman Donovan Richards, who lives in Laurelton, spoke of his time spent representing Rockaway for the past six years on the city council. “I don’t have to talk about what we’re

going to do to ensure this community in Queens moves forward because we provided the template for how development should be done in Queens and New York City. And part of it is learning how to leverage opportunity for communities that have been historically disinvested in,” Richards said, before naming some of his development, infrastructure, park and education investments he’s made as councilman. Hosts, Kevin Alexander of RDRC and Andrea Colon of RYTF then asked questions on various topics from education to transportation, economic development, criminal justice reforms, housing, flooding, community boards and more. On the topic of providing resources for failing schools, Richards spoke about things he’s done as councilman, such as investing $50 million in improvements for local schools and the need to create new schools within the community. Miranda spoke about overcrowding in Queens’ schools and inequality between what some districts get as opposed to others. To address this, he said he’d serve as a voice for his constituents and make sure there is transparency in the decision-making process for school solutions. Crowley spoke about how she transformed her district, which once had the most overcrowded schools in the city, by building more schools and expanding others. On their feelings of the controversial Specialized High School Admissions Test, Crowley said she supports the test, but said there should be more opportunities for kids across the city to attend specialized schools Continued on page 7

by opening more of them, and resources for kids to be better prepared for the test. Miranda said he supports the test, but other criteria should be considered in addition, so schools can consider the student as a whole, even if they have a bad test day. Richards spoke of how less than one percent of black and brown students attends specialized high schools. “We gotta call it what it is—Racism,” he said. He also supported looking at students as a whole and not just based on a test. As the Queens Borough President will have a major say in who sits on community board, RYTF asked how each candidate would ensure boards properly represent the makeup of each community. Crowley spoke of how she’s helped start a program to ensure there’s more female representation on city council, and she would do something similar to make sure community boards are fairly

represented with gender and racial diversity. Miranda said he would ensure that everyone’s voices are heard equally, and took a jab at Richards, who has also had some say in community board members as councilman. “If they couldn’t fix the problem before, they’re not going to give it to you,” he said. Richards shot back at Miranda, saying, "He likes to talk about failed politicians because he was one. He ran for office and lost.” Richards added that as a black man who has faced discrimination, he deeply cares about diversity and will make sure communities are properly represented on community boards. As QBP will also have a say in land use issues, questions were brought up about development in Rockaway. Crowley said she’d open a satellite office in Rockaway so its residents could easily access the QBP and added that Rockaway needs more of other things before being developed. “We cannot build and overdevelop without green spaces, without stores, with-

Page 7

out schools,” she said. Miranda expanded on this, seemingly taking a jab at Richards’ development projects for Edgemere and downtown Far Rockaway. “We need responsible development. They’re building buildings that haven’t done the work. We need to know the impact on schools, hospitals, police, sewage. They haven’t done the work, but they keep building,” he said. Richards spoke about the development he’s supported in Rockaway, in addition to supporting things like new supermarkets, new infrastructure, and new schools. Although not particularly important to the QBP role, RYTF asked for yes/no or one-word answer responses to some special interest questions. Favorite Rockaway restaurant? Crowley: Whit’s End. Miranda: Not one in particular. Richards: Goody’s. Should undocumented residents be allowed to vote in local elections? Richards: Yes. Miranda: Yes. Crowley: No. Should voting age be lowered to 16? Crowley: Yes. Miranda: No. Richards: Yes.

A group of students who have been fighting for a Success Academy Charter School for middle school students asked candidates if they would support it. Miranda said he would be the voice the students need and support the school. Richards said the students were offered a location and it was turned down, to which the student said it wasn’t an adequate facility. Richards said, “This is a conversation for the mayor.” Crowley responded to this, saying, “Your councilmember is in the mayor’s pocket. Anything he wants from City Hall, he gets. If your school was a priority to him, you would have had a new building.” The heated forum ended with closing statements and a reminder from Reverend Evan Dean Gray for all candidates to remain civil. “We could agree to disagree, and everyone has their own plan, but as you are leaders, when one attacks another, those who support the leaders begin to attack each other too. Whoever wins the election, we’re still going to need each other.”

***** Well, some patients really better start eating an apple a day because their doctor is going away. Dr. Peter Galvin will be retiring and closing his office at the end of May. We’re happy for him! And happy for us. He is not retiring from being a highly unpaid columnist for The Rockaway Times. ***** The Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Saturday, March 7. That’s the unofficial start of spring, which is the unofficial start of summer! And if summer comes, so will The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide. We’re planning and planning to have your ad. It’s the one keeper publication of the year. ***** The Special Election for Queens Borough President

is March 24. Liz Crowley has raised the most money of any candidate. Donovan Richards failed to meet a fundraising threshold, which would have allowed him to receive matching funds, but he has garnered several big endorsements and has the Queens County Democratic Party backing. ***** We reported last week the Army Corps was holding a meeting tonight (Thursday, Feb 27) at Beach Channel High School regarding New York-New Jersey Harbor and Tributaries (NYNJHAT) study and plans for area storm protection. After we went to press, the Army Corps canceled because the whole plan (which includes holding public meetings) is not funded. So, they scrapped the meeting because they don’t have the dough. Fear not, there is money for jetties and we’re told the project will (most likely!) begin in 2020. Since there are ten more months in the year, we’re not holding our breath.

The Rockaway Times ***** Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has been rumored to be interested in running for mayor and a recent tweet suggested he’s trying to get on the good side of New Yorkers. He said if he were mayor, he’d try to get James Dolan to sell the Knicks. And if he adds that he’d fix Rockaway roads, he has our vote. ***** Local resident Torey Schnupp has played a major role in leading the fight against the Beach 101 homeless shelter. Now she's hoping to fight for Rockaway further by becoming the next female District Leader. "I'd like to represent this district and fight for what everyone needs," she said. She'll be introducing herself more to the community in the coming weeks. The election will be held in June. ***** New speed cameras have gone up. SHELTER UPDATE

Continued from Page 5

According to Schnupp, Stringer’s office is not pleased with the way the situation has been handled in Glendale and Rockaway. “Stringer’s office is not happy this is happening. They were surprised that it’s happening twice in a row now, considering DHS is trying to rush this through,” Schnupp said. Local elected officials are surprised by the move and are still being kept in the dark about details. “There’s no contract. Who is answering to them? Who is responsible for them? Where is their food coming from? DHS doesn’t have an answer for that,” Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said. “It’s insanity how we’ve come to treat people. We can say that the community feels that this is not a good match, but when they’re bussing people in, in the middle of the night, it’s just a slap in the face to the whole the community. I don’t think anybody is happy about that. There’s no human element to that. They’re not vetting who’s not well. They’re so desperate to

get people off the street. It’s just a Band-Aid to the problem.” Pheffer Amato said she has requested a meeting with DHS to try to get more answers, but has been unable to do so yet. “I don’t understand the logistics of it, and I feel as a rep, I have a right to know,” she said. RSNS’ lawsuit is still ongoing, and so is the effort to help RSNS stay on top of legal fees. On Saturday, March 21, RSNS will be holding a fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus to continue the fight. For $30, starting at 7:30 p.m., guests can enjoy live music by Solshyne and Bobby Butler and Friends, a 50/50 and a silent auction with plenty of chances to win prizes. There will also be a cash bar. Tickets will be available at the door. “We need to keep the faith and keep the support going because this is not a done deal. I feel strongly that if we don’t push back against what the City does, then we might as well let them have their way and do whatever they want,” Schnupp said.

It’s A Thing: Lifelong Friendships in the Rockaways By Marina Cregan

It has been said that, “Everyone has friends at various stages in their lives, but only the lucky ones have the same friends during all stages of their lives.” These words could not be more true than they are here in the Rockaways. Among the things that makes Rockaway so unique, is the fact that so many natives choose to remain on the peninsula, well into adulthood, raising their own families here. And with this pattern, longtime friendships are born. Of the many locals lucky enough to have friends almost longer than they can remember, Maureen Blum Del Vecchio is one who has had the same group of four best friends for well past four decades. Born in the old Rockaway Beach Hospital, Del Vecchio and her family are true Rockawayites. Del Vecchio, as well as her eight siblings, were all born and raised on Beach 133rd Street, where she was lucky to meet two of her best friends, Clare Lynch Shannon and Bernadette McLean Maxfield. Like most Rockaway families, Del Vecchio’s mother was great friends with Shannon’s mother, as they were pregnant with their daughters at the same time. So you might say, Del Vecchio and Shannon had a bond before birth and their lifelong friendship is truly lifelong! Maureen and Claire found themselves with a new friend at the age of five when Bernadette moved to the block and the duo quickly became a trio. All three of the girls went to St. Francis de Sales together (class of ’74), where their friendship continued to flourish as they grew up. When it came time for high school, the trio added two more girls to their group, Vanessa Van Leer Livingston and Monica Parness Monzo. When reflecting back on all the good times the group had, it was their love for the beach that really brought them all together. “Rockaway is summer, and we lived for the summer time in Rockaway,” Del

Vecchio said. During the summer, they spent their days and nights at the

beach, whether it be sun-bathing during the day, or hosting bonfires at night. And when the bonfire blew out, the group took the fun to the local bars, which she says were all swinging, like old Dingy Dan’s, the Rain Tower, and Fitzgerald’s. When asking Del Vecchio to reminisce on all the fun she had growing up in Rockaway with her best friends, she said, “We’re all very blessed and we know it. It was a really great childhood, and now it goes on.” However, while the fun stops after high school for most, as people move on with their lives and start their own families, this group knew that their friendship was much more than just any ordinary childhood friend group. As Del Vecchio said, “We have gone through college, our ‘Sex in the City’ stage when we were all newbies on Wall Street, first loves, broken hearts, our weddings… and separations,

of their children are friends, making the lifelong friendships almost a family affair. Del Vecchio, Maxfield and Shannon remain in Rockaway and raise their own families here. Because of their wonderful childhood, it was important for Del Vecchio to raise her family in the same loving environment she experienced. Del Vecchio jokes, “I didn’t choose to live in Rockaway because of the lack of transportation, but it’s because of the incredibly unique community of Rockaway.” Now, Del Vecchio and her family reside on Beach 103rd, and they the loss of grandparents, par- are witnessing the beautiful reents, and siblings together.” The group insists on keeping in touch, regardless if they still live on the peninsula or not. At one point, Del Vecchio lived in Italy, Maxfield in California, Livingston in Hawaii, all while Shannon remained in Rockaway. But despite the fact that the friends had spread across the country and internationally, the bonds remained just as strong as ever, as they survived living in different countries, states and a 12-hour time zone difference. However, Del Vecchio said, “When we were living in very different parts of the world, our connections were much more limited for a few years. vival of downtown Rockaway. Black History Month: Last Ways to Celebrate By Kami-Leigh Agard

February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements and rich contributions by African Americans in U.S. history. In this Rockaway Times month-long series, we give our readers a smattering of facts, events and films that serve as teaching moments for the entire family. FACTS: According to the book, “Between Ocean and City. The Transformation of Rockaway, NY” by Lawrence and Carol P. Kaplan: Although most African-Americans arrived in Rockaway during the northern migration of the 20th century, small numbers of black people have lived on the peninsula for hundreds of years. The Cornell family estate, established in the late 17th century, used slave labor. Almost from the very beginning of its resort history, Rockaway’s summer businesses, including the amusement

parks and hotels, employed poorly paid black workers. Nonetheless, African-Americans were never seen in the white sections of town—the beaches or boardwalks, shops, restaurants, amusement parks, and play areas. During the first half of the 20th century, Rockaway Beach practiced segregation on a large scale. Though bars proliferated in Rockaway, there was only one, “Tip Inn,” that black people frequented. Remembering Detective Anthony DiCarlo

Detective Anthony DiCarlo. By Marina Cregan

Rockaway will never forget NYPD Detective Anthony DiCarlo. On Friday, February 21, the community came together at a memorial Mass to honor DiCarlo on the first anniversary of his passing. DiCarlo died suddenly at the age of 51 of a heart attack last year, leaving behind his beloved wife of 19 years, Maria Lamicella DiCarlo, and his three daughters, Maria, Daniella and Ariana. DiCarlo was well-known throughout the Rockaways and Brooklyn, for his selfless service and dedication to the NYPD, soccer coaching skills, and his all-around good humor. As well as being a dedicated father and soccer coach, DiCarlo was a dedicated member of the NYPD. In his early 30s, DiCarlo chose to give up a career in finance to serve as one of New York’s Finest. Because of his outstanding service devoted to the NYPD, DiCarlo was honored posthumously by the NYPD United Nations General Assembly Central Headquarters. They dedicated the name of their camp in DiCarlo’s memory, calling it, “Camp DiCarlo.” The Camp DiCarlo flag waved proudly between the U.S. and NYPD flags at the NYPD memorial held on September 20, 2019. DiCarlo’s dedication to service extended beyond the NYPD. Following Hurricane Sandy, he dedicated his time to helping his neighbors by collecting and distributing goods as a volunteer at St. Francis de Sales’ makeshift relief station.

Since he passed, DiCarlo has also been recognized by the Hance Family Foundation, a cause DiCarlo was actively involved in. During his lifetime, DiCarlo was committed to honoring the memory of Jackie Hance’s daughters, Emma, age 8; Alyson, 7; and Katie, 5, who were killed in a wrong-way crash in 2009. The foundation recognized DiCarlo posthumously, for all of his past efforts helping the family since the tragedy. After DiCarlo’s funeral last year, Congressman Pete King shared the following message, which truly sums up DiCarlo’s character. King said, “He was first class all the way—extremely intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated—A cop’s cop… Most of all, Anthony was a great family man, always talking glowingly about his wife, Maria, and their three daughters, whom he coached on their CYO, travel, and high school soccer teams.” The focus of Friday’s Mass was DiCarlo’s legacy. On the altar, which was adorned with beautiful NYPD blue and white flowers, was officiate, Fr. Sean Suckiel, St. Francis de Sales' pastors, Rev. William F. Sweeney, and Rev. James Cunningham, and the NYPD Chaplain, Fr. Robert Romano. Fr. Sean’s homily discussed DiCarlo’s love for his wife and three girls. Attendance was high, as everyone remembered the many things DiCarlo loved, including soccer, as he was the SFDS and Fontbonne Hall Academy (FHA) coach; the Dallas Cowboys, as he was a die-hard fan; and his love of entertaining family and friends. SFDS students, Lucy and Tess Kuhlman, were altar servers who were personally connected to the DiCarlo family, since the Kuhlman girls were all active participants in the SFDS CYO soccer program. Shannon Neiswenter and Kasey Jenkusky read on the altar, and Kaitlyn Potter and Mauve Murnan, all FHA soccer girls, brought up the gifts. All four of these girls had the pleasure of being coached by DiCarlo in his years of coaching the Bonnies. These

girls were just a few of many from across Rockaway and Brooklyn, who have benefitted from DiCarlo’s knowledge of soccer, and his compassion and dedication as a coach. Immediately following the Mass, SFDS hosted a reception for DiCarlo in the small hall. Here, the attendees had the opportunity to share stories and memories of the dedicated detective and his loving family. Close family friend and parent to one of DiCarlo’s soccer play-

ers, Clare Santiago, said, “We miss him with all our hearts! He was a great man, husband, father, and friend! Kelly (her daughter) was so lucky to have him in her life and is a better person because of him. I believe that the parents of all the others that he coached would agree.” Detective Anthony DiCarlo’s legacy will continue to live on through his beloved wife, and three daughters, and all of those he impacted during his life.

A Burritoful New Beginning

By Nicole Taylor-Lang

Three summers ago, Sam Neely and Eugene Cleghorn brought a taste of the west coast to Rockaway and locals got a taste of what they didn’t know they were missing—San Francisco-style burritos. Super Burrito became an instant hit at the Beach 97th boardwalk concession, so much so, that now they’re bringing their forearm-sized burritos to locals year-round. This spring, Super Burrito will open a brickand-mortar location in Arverne By The Sea. Originally from the Bay Area of California and best friends since high school, Neely and Cleghorn moved to Rockaway six years ago. Missing the food of their hometown, and wanting to start a business since they were 20, the buddies got a taste of it when they opened their boardwalk concession in the summer of 2017. Their massive burritos and charm soon had people coming back for more. “Their burritos are on point. A great example of Mission-style. Beyond that, Eugene and Sam are absolute sweethearts who have shown me nothing but respect,” Rockaway Park resident, Nick Rowe, said. The only bad thing was that Rockaway winters were a little less super when the concessions closed for the season. But good news for all the Super Burrito lovers out there! The owners are now going to be able to fulfill burrito cravings year-round, as they're bringing a new wave to The Tides. Right

next to Locals Collective and Cuisine by Claudette on Beach 69th Street, Super Burrito will be the newest neighbor of Arverne by the Sea. “The desire for this type of food has grown out here,” Neely said. “We wanted to build that for everyone and ourselves.” According to the duo, taquerias in California are like the pizzerias here in NY. Just like you grab a slice on your lunch break or on your way home, people out in Cali grab a burrito. “It’s my favorite food and it would be my choice for last meal,” Cleghorn said with laugh. Super Burrito’s food has already captured the hearts and appetites of locals. The massive burritos are stuffed with a choice of meat or veggies, rice, beans, jack cheese, avocado, pico de gallo, salsa verde, salsa roja and sour cream, all wrapped into a tortilla. They also offer bowls and quesadillas. However, with a new location and a bigger kitchen, the owners will be able to slightly expand the menu and offer more specials. But the originals aren’t going anywhere, much to the joy of those who’ve tried them. “The al pastor is always fresh and delicious and there is just something magical about the way they steam their tortillas with the cheese in them,” says local surfer, Terence McNicholas, who likes to catch a bite during surf breaks. The owners don’t want to disclose any of the new items yet, so you will have to check them out when Super Burrito opens. The owners expect to open sometime in April. Along with an expanded menu,

Super Burrito will also be able to offer delivery, and the owners say they hope to eventually deliver as far as Breezy Point and Broad Channel. When originally looking to expand, Manhattan and Brooklyn did come to mind, but ultimately the guys decided to pay it back to the place that helped them get their start. “We wanted to reward the place that propped us up,” said Neely. “We also want to show respect to the locals here and the generation of families living here,” Cleghorn said. In addition to their customers, the friends say they also received a lot

of support from Whitney Aycock, Graham Hill, Sean Flaherty, and Dominic Boero, so they knew they’d be in good company by opening a place locally. When looking for spaces, the up-and-coming surfing area of Arverne felt the most right and they were able to acquire the last spot under The Tides. For the friends, Rockaway brought them a sense of home. While living in Brooklyn, they discovered Rockaway and realized it had a familiar feel. “It reminded me of San Fran, the ocean, the bay, the fog, the microclimate, I haven’t felt more at home,” Cleghorn said. Bringing a taste of home to their new home felt right. “We wanted to taste the food of our home and share it with Rockaway,” Neely said. Expanding has been a dream for Cleghorn and Neely and now that it’s becoming a reality, they’re hoping it’s the start of something big. To give back to all of those who helped them get this far, Cleghorn and Neely will be holding a special grand opening celebration. Stay tuned for details!

This Saturday, February 29, Rustwoods and Whit’s End host a 1970s-themed Blacula Extravaganza presented by magic virtuoso, Adam Cardone, that will have you looking over your shoulder. Come dressed in your ‘70s garb and brace yourself to watch the 1972 blaxploitation cult classic, “Blacula,” on the big screen, plus relive the disco era with go-go dancers, a 1970s-themed costume party, and be mesmerized as Cardone makes your goose bumps rise even higher with his spine-tingling, world-class magic. One of the top grossing films of its time, “Blacula” is a loose adaptation of the classic, “Dracula,” starring African-American famed Shakespearean actor, William Marshall, who wreaks a terrifying dignity in his role as Prince Mamauwalde, an 18th-century emissary of an African nation seeking the help of Count Dracula to suppress the slave trade. Unfortunately, Count Dracula scoffs at the prince and transforms him into a vampire, cursing him with the name, “Blacula,” and sealing him and his wife, Luva, in a cof-

fin buried in his Transylvanian castle. Then, a century later in the Watts district of Los Angeles, interior decorators bring back the coffin from Transylvania, unknowingly freeing Blacula, who then goes on a rampage as he follows a woman named, Tina, whom he believes is the reincarnation of his wife, Luva. Blacula not only lays the mack down on Tina, but sinks his teeth in unsuspecting party-goers. Cardone, who lists this movie as one of his favorites, says this is one film, where you’ll not only feel the funk and soul of the ‘70s, but sink your teeth into a cult classic that many people may never have heard of. He shared, “I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania at a time when you could not see a lot of movies. This was pre-VHS and cable era. All we had were movie magazines and television. I remember seeing “Blacula” on television as a child, and it actually was one of the first movies that I remember being genuinely very scared by. It’s a great monster movie, and a lot of people have never seen it. It sounds like it’s going to be a comedy beContinued on page 23

‘BLACULA’ RISES

Continued from Page 18 cause of the title, but though it’s mildly humorous, it’s definitely terrifying. There’s some bad special effects and really bad makeup in a few scenes that will make people laugh, and that’s great. That was the time. “Plus ‘Blacula’ takes you back

to the heyday of the ‘70s. There’s a party scene in a night club, where the band, Hues Corporation (known for the song, ‘Rock

Though not required, attendees are free to come in costume, whether it be flat out ‘70s-themed, horror or both. According to Mikal Hameed, proprietor of Rustwoods, there will be intermissions during the film, so folks can chat, mingle, be entertained by gogo dancers and of course, Cardone’s magic show. Hameed said, “I’m not going to sit folks down for the entire movie, we are going to make it old school, so people can take a break, mingle, discuss the movie, and have fun. I saw ‘Blacula’ when I was young, and to watch it again this Saturday on the big screen is going to be epic. We even got in contact with the son of the actor who plays Blacula. He was so excited, and we want to grow this into something bigger in the future.” Rustwoods/Whit’s End/Cardone’s Blacula Extravaganza happens this Saturday, Febty, celebrating the Blaxploitation ruary 29 at Rustwoods (97-02 film era with the screening of Rockaway Beach Blvd). This is what we are going to recreate at Rustwoods for this Saturday’s extravaganza. Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Measles By Twain “Then came the measles” from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Chapter XXII by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910). In 2019, there were more than 1,300 cases of measles reported in the U.S., more than any year since 2000 when measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. The 2019 outbreak was linked to unvaccinated travelers who brought the disease here from other countries, with subsequent transmission to pockets of unvaccinated individuals. Most readers have never suffered from measles and therefore have no expe-

rience by which to judge how serious the disease was in the past. Perhaps the words and recollections of Mark Twain will enlighten us to how serious and potentially deadly the disease once was, and how it still is in some parts of the world. Mark Twain and his most famous character, Tom Sawyer, both suffered from the disease. Concerning Sawyer’s measles infection, Twain wrote: “During two long weeks Tom lay a prisoner, dead to the world and its happenings. He was very ill, he was interested in nothing.” As a child,

Twain witnessed an outbreak of measles and recalled the following: “In 1845, when I was ten years old, there was an epidemic of measles in the town and it made a most alarming slaughter among the little people. There was a funeral almost daily…” Twain deliberately infected himself by exposing himself to a sick friend. He described the experience as follows: It was a good case of measles that resulted. It brought me within a shade of death’s door… The word had been passed and the family notified to assemble around the bed and see me off… They were all crying, but that did not affect me. I took but the vaguest interest in it and that merely because I was the center of all this emotional attention and was gratified by it and vain of it. When Doctor Cunningham had made up his mind that nothing more could be done for me, he put bags of hot ashes all over me. He put them on my breast, on my wrists, on my ankles; and so very much to his

astonishment, - and doubtless to my regret – he dragged me back into this world and set me going again. Today, we have an effective vaccine against measles, and we don’t treat it with hot ashes. The vaccine does not increase the risk of or cause autism. Very rarely, serious adverse events may occur following vaccination, for example serious allergic reactions (1 in 30,000 to 40,000 cases) and febrile seizures in children under seven (1 in 3-4000 cases). Those who foolishly refuse vaccination put themselves and those around them at risk. It is hoped that one day, with the help of vaccination, measles will be eliminated from the world and relegated to the history books and literature, such as Mark Twain’s beloved, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Soul’s Plan The journey in life is sometimes long and often cut short for others. We all have a unique path and want to live a happy and healthy life but as we know, it doesn’t always work out that way. We are blessed to be here in sickness or health. It is more difficult to feel gratitude when you are ill or have a loss in your life of a loved one. These are trying times and they test our faith. It is the caregivers that are our angels on earth. You have my sincere gratitude for being compassionate and

kind. Today I opened several different books and each one sent me the message of gratitude. Do I repeat myself? Of course, I do because this is a daily practice of mine. I try to live each moment with a presence of gratitude. The greatest prayer, “Thank You.” When I wake up, open my eyes and put two feet on the ground, I say, thank you God for another day. I infuse my day with gratitude and it makes me happy. Energy is everything, everything is energy. (Thank

Page 25

you to Chris Romulo for this comment). So, when my attitude is of gratitude, I am lifted up to a place of grace. My intention is cultivated with a grateful heart for this moment, this life, this feeling, this breath. It is everything to me to be grateful. One of the books I chose gave me a ritual to follow to encourage a heathy and happy life. For the next 28 days you can dedicate yourself to this three-part ritual. Taken from the "Moon Deck Guidebook." (Thank you, Jen Kelleher, for your inspiration in our Moon Circles at Ocean Bliss Yoga). Adorn: Choose a favorite piece of jewelry to be your gratitude ‘charm’. On day one, hold this charm and infuse it with your deepest gratitudes. Let yourself be moved by the countless blessings in your life. Wear this charm throughout the ritual as a sweet reminder. (I have chosen a beautiful citrine necklace my very generous sister, Margaret, who I love dearly, gifted to me just because. Thank you,

Maggie, you make my heart sing). Gratitude Jar: Then, every day for 28 days, write one to three things you’re grateful for and put it into a glass jar. Be specific—tap into how these people, experiences or qualities have elevated your life. Place your jar where the sun and moon can shine light into your blessings. (Today is Day One for me, so very grateful for my Ocean Bliss community, blessed to hear the birds singing on this beautiful day, thankful for my family and gratitude for The Rockaway Times for providing a space to share my thoughts.) On day 29: Empty your jar and read your notes with full presence. You may be surprised and touched by what you read. Continue to make gratitude a vital part of your daily life. Breathing in, I am grateful, breathing out, I am happy. May all beings be free of suffering, may you be free, may you live with ease and may you find gratitude in your life.

imately $1 billion dollars. Without a doubt, homelessness is a complex and challenging socioeconomic issue on the rise in our city and across the nation. Homelessness in NYC and across our nation is a serious challenge affecting more and more people across their lifespan. It's not only the single men dealing with addictions issues, as we often tend to imagine when thinking about homelessness. Nowadays, homelessness affects everyone, including children living in homeless shelters, going to school from a homeless shelter and returning there for another night. The face of homelessness in America has been changing from affecting mostly single individuals to encompassing families and children. According to the American Institutes for Research and the National Center on Family Homelessness (2019), there are 2.5 million children homeless each year in America. This historic high represents one in every 30 children in the United States. As a nation and people, we can definitely do better and find a solution! The complexity of this issue should not let us accept the current situation as normal. Prescription for Homelessness is access to affordable, permanent and safe housing, not a bed in a shelter where a homeless person remains homeless. Once again, thank you for including those two reports in our Rockaway Times! Janusz A. Kaleta, RN, BScN (Hons.), MSCISc (Master of Clinical Sciences), P.h.D Student in Nursing at CUNY

Local Leaders Hold Anti-Hate Crime Forum By Marina Cregan

Due to the recent increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes occurring throughout the country, and on the Rockaway peninsula, the need to protect our community from such crimes is at an all-time high. Because Rockaway has been directly affected on separate occasions, local leaders, Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, teamed up with The Simon Wiesenthal Center, and held a town hall meeting at the West End Temple, on Thursday, February 20 to discuss ways to combat hate. As director of the Eastern Region Simon Wiesenthal Center, Michael Cohen, said in his opening introduction, “It is not a question of what happened, and let’s react. It is a question of, let’s get ahead of the issue.” The panel consisted of Michael Brovner, deputy chief of Gang Violence and Hate Crimes from the Queens district attorney’s office, Mark Molinari, deputy inspector and head of the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force and Commanding Officer of the NYPD 100th Precinct, Captain Louron Hall, who answered all the questions that concerned residents raised. Also in attendance were Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, representatives from the National Parks Service, Reverend Richard Ahlemeyer of St. Camillus Catholic Church, and West End Temple’s Rabbi Marjorie Sloane. They gathered with concerned community members who had one mission—to decrease hate and show support for the Jewish community. Although the peninsula has not had any severe anti-Semitic crimes since Labor Day, when the Silver Gull Beach Club and Beach 138th Street were vandalized with derogatory words and symbols aimed at the Jewish community, Rockaway’s leaders felt it necessary to be proactive. They began by giving a brief background on the Silver Gull incident, explaining how diligent and responsive the U.S. Park Police has been in their

investigation. The owner of the National Parks Concessions, Ortega Family Enterprises, reached out to the Simon Wiesenthal Center immediately after the incident, asking for help. With all three entities working together, NPS, Ortega, National Parks and the Simon Wiesenthal Center decided that their leadership teams must have proper training on how to deal with these types of issues. In the first week of March, members of the NPS are flying to Los Angeles to receive a three-day training, which they will then teach to all their seasonal employees, so all who are employed with NPS will be fully prepared to deal with such hate crimes. Now they’re hoping the community will also be prepared. Katz told everyone, “We need to stand as a community, and watch each other’s backs.” She explained that in order to understand hate crimes and do the right thing, when we see it, we must end it. As Queens district attorney, Katz reassured everyone in the room that she, as well as her team, take hate crimes very seriously. Although they are much harder to prosecute, she said, “We will also not tolerate people going after one another in a county where we are 200 countries and 190 languages, simply because of the color of their skin, or the faith they choose. That’s not happening here, in Queens County.” Law enforcement officials also expressed how serious-

ly they take hate crimes, by explaining to the people that even if they feel the crime or harassment is something minute, people must call 911 so the NYPD are able to monitor such events, and conduct a full investigation if needed. Brovner elaborated further, by expressing how important it is to leave all evidence untouched, so their investigation can be as thorough as possible. He gave an example of graffiti vandalism, saying that the NYPD will be able to determine approximately how tall a suspect is, based on the size and height of the graffiti. Understanding that it is common nature for people to want to erase such horrible images, and words of hate, Brovner stressed to the room that we can all do our part by reporting everything we see, and putting our faith in the NYPD to do their job. Molinari then explained in detail, the three different types of harassment, and what would be considered a hate crime. The first type of harassment is a verbal threat, and when one is intimidated by another’s behavior, which would result in an arrest if necessary. The second type of harassment is using the same language, but also targeting the identity. If this threatening behavior targets a person’s identity, then it would be considered a hate crime. Molinari also elaborated that if someone yells in general, negative hate speech, but doesn’t make any physical/

verbal threat to another, then they are technically protected by free speech. The majority of questions raised by the audience regarded how to protect children from witnessing hate crimes on a daily basis. In response, Cohen said, “There is nothing more powerful than education.” Cohen said that in this day and age, where social media plays a huge part in most children’s lives, we need to teach our children about social responsibility. He also stated that we need to include the entire school community in this conversation, meaning parents should be involved. While parents may feel the need to shelter their children from such crimes, they should instead have constant conversations about these crimes happening throughout the country. By raising awareness, children will feel more equipped to report a crime, or stand up for their classmate who may be a victim of hateful words. Based on the questions raised and answered, Addabbo and Amato assured those in attendance that they will look into establishing some type of interfaith group or coalition to promote tolerance. By creating a coalition comprised of people of many different faiths, they can help teach children, as well as the whole community, that we are no different from one another and we all need to be treated with respect. They also reassured people to report anything they see, especially on social media platforms. Power works in numbers, so the more times people report negative comments, the more likely it will be removed. The meeting concluded with Addabbo and Amato’s closing statements, where they reminded people to reach out to them if they have any additional ideas on how to decrease hate in the community. If you missed this meeting, Addabbo and Amato, as well as the Simon Wiesenthal Center, are sponsoring a second meeting on March 5, at the Bayswater Jewish Center (2355 Healy Ave. in Far Rockaway) at 6 p.m.

Bodacious Boundaries Dear Enchantress, You often mention boundaries. What are some quick ways to create boundaries on your feet during conversations when people request too much info that you might not want to offer, but your guard is down? I help people for my business, so this one woman often asks me questions that I give great answers to, and once I get into it with her, it never ends and I can’t get away from her. Dear Betty Boundary, GREAT QUESTION. This is one of the biggest challenges and causes for disconnecting and relationships ending, or connec-

tions being broken. Boundaries are not something we are taught in school and most people including myself, had no idea that boundaries existed. Boundaries can be created at any moment, and no situation has to be a certain way. We always have the individual power to negotiate, redirect and speak our boundaries. Everyone does. So, it is a misconception when someone gets blamed for talking too much, asking for too much, asking for big favors, asking for too many favors or for being overbearing, naggy, annoying, cheap, flakey, etc. You get the idea. A big part of this is for you to

know in your heart, you giving this person a boundary is helpful for you first and them second, if you don't give the boundary, you will end up resenting her, and worse, you will eventually avoid her. Really trusting that you care, and that she is a grown up and may not like what you say no matter how graceful and kind you are, and that must be ok with you. Ask for support by telling a trusted friend that this is an issue (don't mention with who, or it will turn to gossip.) And then let her know when you do it, so you can have accountability. It's easy to get sucked in, if you've been sucked in before. Usually, the person who is given the boundary is surprised, so know that you doing this, may feel "wrong" and "bad" and it's not. It's the healthiest thing you can do for yourself and to preserve the relationship. It is each person's responsibility to make choices. It may not always seem that way. And usually a person might feel trapped or obligated or feel forced to tolerate a person or situation. The good news is you never have to do any

The Rockaway Times of those things. The uncomfortable news is if setting boundaries is new to you, this will feel hard, and maybe even impossible. To answer your specific question. When someone gets on the phone with you, or you are in person, and they begin asking questions, or advice from you, and you feel it in your body, or your mind goes: ALERT ALERT ALERT, you are about to enter a rabbit hole. The tool you whip out of your metaphorical tool belt is: redirect. To use grace is important, and you can stop the person from talking by saying something like, "Wait! I must stop you here, your questions are always super interesting, and I'm grateful you think I know the answers, but now is not the best time. Can we set up a time where we are both available to talk about this?" Let's break it down: Be abrupt; Give a compliment; Ask a question back. If you have a question for The Enchantress, email her at support@enchantedembodiment. com Have an enchanting week!

Travels with Bob & Sandy ROAD RAGE…IN THE AIR

By Bob & Sandy Nesoff

There was a time in the distant past when flying was a genteel activity. Passengers could sit around a table, talk to each other and play cards or read in comfort. As we said, that was the distant past. Road Rage on the highways has become as common as candidates in a debate screaming at each other. “Political Rage?” Quite recently a woman filed assault charges against the man in the seat behind her on a flight. She reclined the seat and he got annoyed. They were both sitting in the section not fondly referred to as “Cattle Class” where the pitch, the distance from your knees to the seat in front of you, has been reduced to micro-measurements. He began tapping the seat. She never took the hint. He then pushed the seat back. Still no response. A video taken by another passenger showed her acting totally oblivious to the situation. He then became a bit more aggressive and started to pound the seat back. The video doesn’t show the result, but she ended up filing assault charges when they landed. Now what he did, really didn’t rise to the degree of what would commonly be called, “assault.” But neither one took the opportunity to say: “Do you mind if I recline my seat a bit?” Nor: “Would you please raise your seat as I am cramped into this tiny space they’ve allotted me?” In truth, most airlines don’t give a damn about passenger comfort in any section other than First or Business Class. OK, they are paying huge premiums for better seating, meals, booze and what-haveyou. But that really is no reason to have cut the space between seat backs from 35 inches to a

mere 30 inches. No idea what the outcome of this case will be, but we’ll try to keep you posted. Not that long ago, a passenger was literally dragged off a plane by police for refusing to change his seat as ordered by the flight attendant who then called the cops. The video taken of the man, who was a physician and not ordinarily prone to fighting, showed his eye glasses askew, an injury on his forehead that was bleeding and other results of being physically forced and dragged from the seat. What had caused this contretemps was the flight attendant telling him he was in the wrong seat and should move. He could have done so, but refused. She could have tried talking to him instead of demanding and calling the fuzz. He sued and won. On a long cross-country flight some time back, we were sitting in front of a woman with two children. The kids had just come from another long flight and were tired of being cooped up. The young girl behind me kept hitting the seat back, I turned to look several times and in each instance the mother simply looked at the cabin ceiling, ignoring me. She was politely asked to please stop the child and made no effort to do so. The

flight attendant was called and asked to assist. She came, looked at the situation and then walked away, doing nothing. They attempt to avoid any controversy and all too often simply ignore the issue, thus raising temperatures and “Air-

Rage.” The airlines could take several steps to help alleviate such distressing situations. One, they could forfeit the extra row they’ve gained by jamming passengers in to extremely uncomfortable spaces. Two, they could train flight attendants on methods of defusing potential conflict. Three, they could tell the offending parties that they will be banned from further flights on the particular airline for a set period of time. But, you know what? That’ll never happen until there is a truly disastrous incident that compromises the safety of the aircraft and all of its passengers. But then it’ll be too late.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need The solar year is approximately 365.2422 days long and ignoring that small fraction creates a much bigger problem than one might expect. Which is exactly why we now have a leap year. The concept of “Leap Years” started when Julius Caesar decided it was time to reform the calendar which had fallen out of sync with the seasons. To fix the problem, Julius Caesar decided on a single, 445-day-long “Year of Confusion” in 46 B.C.E. to correct the years of slow drift in one go. This marked the last year of the Pre-Julian Roman Calendar and the start of the Julian Roman Calendar, which included a leap day every fourth year similar to what we think of today. This made the average year 365.25 days long. This, however, did not work either as .25 is a slight over correction of

the actual .2422 leftover in the solar year making the calendar year around 11 minutes shorter than the solar year. This makes the two calendars off from each other by an entire day every 128 years. By the time of Pope Gregory XIII, in 1582, important dates and holidays were seeing discrepancies of around 10 days, forcing him to release the now almost universally used Gregorian calendar. To correct the issues of the past 1600 years, the new calendar dropped 10 days from the month of October in 1582.

To prevent the same issue that was just corrected from happening again, the Gregorian calendar decided that moving forward, now bare with me, leap years that are divisible by 100, like the year 1900, are skipped. That is unless they are also divisible by 400, like the year 2000, in which case they are observed. So in short, every 400 years three leap days are dropped and that is what keeps the calendar on time. This INSANE “solution” puts the calendar year at just a half a minute longer than the solar year. That means it will take 3,300 years before the Gregorian calendar will be off by a day from our seasonal cycle, meaning that future generations will have to make yet another decision on how to handle the leap year. Facts by Sean McVeigh, factologist.
