Community Board 14 March Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan

The ongoing concern of the coronavirus certainly did not keep Rockaway residents from attending this month’s Community Board 14 (CB14) meeting. On Tuesday, March 10, locals and CB14 members packed the Knights of Columbus, all eager to hear the jam-packed agenda planned. However, with an agenda set with two presentations, and reports from the Transportation Committee, the room was nearly empty by the end of the night. Due to the absence of the Chairperson Dolores Orr, Al Moore took her place on the board, and District Manager Jonathan Gaska read the report from the Chair. Gaska gave an update on the proposed plan for Arverne East, stating that it is officially back. Arverne East is the area directly east of Beach 58th Street all the way down to Beach 32nd Street, from the freeway to the boardwalk. About 17 years ago, CB14 approved the proposal

plan for Arverne East, but it looks much different than it does today. Gaska stated that the updated proposal states Arverne East will have 1-2 family housing, that will be mid-high rise in height, resulting in about 115 more units than was originally discussed with the board. Additionally, there will be about 15-20 blocks of park space composed of interpreted trails, as well as the possibility of creating a major hotel. Gaska also stated that a small portion will be affordable housing, which resulted in a backlash from the board. In response, Gaska said although majority of these new units will be affordable housing, the numbers are on the upper end of the affordable scale. Aside from the affordable issue, CB14 is deeply concerned that the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was created 17 years ago, and is not up to date. Because too many of things have changed downtown east since, Gaska assured the board that they will be setting up meetings with the Land Use and Housing, Transportation, and

Parks Committees in the next two months, to work on amending the original ULURP, in order to ensure the EIS is adequate. After Gaska read the report from the Chair, acting Queens Borough President (QBP) Sharon Lee spoke briefly, thanking the community for the opportunity to serve as Borough President. She encouraged the room to vote on March 24 for the next QBP, and she also brought attention to numbers in the NYC budget. Queens families are not getting their, “fair share.” Lee explained that in regards to Queens students, elders, and hospitals, Queens residents receive the least amount of dollars among the five boroughs. After relaying these facts, Lee concluded by urging the room to get out and vote, stating, “I wanted to equip you with facts. We all want the same thing. We all want to strengthen our community, and we want to strengthen our borough.” Next, the floor opened to the public, with eight speakers

signed up to speak. On behalf of the Droesch family, Keith Goldberg proposed the renaming of Beach 134th Street, between Newport and Cronston Avenue, to be “Clare Droesch Way.” Goldberg explained Clare Droesch’s outstanding basketball career, and all she has done for the community. The effort, he said, is fully supported by block residents. A representative from Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office spoke up, stating that they had already begun the legislation process. As the public speaking portion continued, representatives from the Far Rock Strong Team Crate elaborated on the great opportunities they provide for the kids, and are reaching out to CB14 for additional resources. Currently, they host after-school activities at the Hammels Community Center. But, unfortunately, they are losing this location, and are actively trying to find another place to provide their services for the kids on the peninsula. Continued on page 25

Coronavirus Patient Admitted to St. John’s HERE’S WHAT LOCALS NEED TO KNOW By Kami-Leigh Agard

Last Saturday, March 7, Mayor de Blasio confirmed the eighth case of Coronavirus in NYC, the first reported in Rockaway. The 33-year-old man, an Uber driver, was admitted to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital (SJEH) on Friday night, with his case prompting more than 40 doctors, nurses and other hospital workers to go into voluntary self-isolation over fears that they might have been exposed to the coronavirus. As of press time, NYC has confirmed 48 positive cases of coronavirus and NYS has stacked 212 so far. In the press conference de Blasio stated: “Case eight— the Uber driver in Far Rockaway is a 33 year old man. He

is not a TLC Uber driver. He works on Long Island, so he's not under TLC jurisdiction. He had pneumonia related to coronavirus, and is now in stable condition at the hospital. Family has been contacted by the disease detectives. All family members are in isolation at home and are asymptomatic, including his wife, three children, motherin-law, father-in-law, brotherin-law, and sister-in-law. St. John’s has a situation, where there are 41 staff members, and this is again one of these abundance of cautionary situations, that may have experienced exposure. They're all now in voluntary isolation, being monitored regularly. None symptomatic at this point. The hospital has been provided

with support to have additional resources and personnel. And at this point, reports normal operations.” As for SJEH’s protocols regarding dealing with coronavirus cases, the press office submitted the following to The Rockaway Times: Is it safe to come to the hospital for healthcare or to visit a doctor at one of their outpatient community practices? SJEH confirms that it is completely safe to come to the hospital for healthcare needs, and to visit SJEH doctors as they are following clinically accepted infection control protocols to prevent the spread of disease. Is there reason for the community to be alarmed about the confirmed case of COV-

ID-19 at SJEH? The hospital confirms there is absolutely no reason for any person or patient of SJEH to be alarmed. The individual is being treated in isolation using clinically accepted infection control protocols. Did the SJEH case of COVID-19 originate within the hospital? Answer, no. COVID-19 has been detected in almost 90 locations internationally. The virus was not contracted within SJEH or at any of their community practices. Why The Long Face? I woke up this morning with a five-finger imprint on my face. I’d slept on my hand, after spending the entire day before not trying to touch my face. Let’s face it, pardon the expression, it’s impossible. I rub my chin to show others how thoughtful I am. It’s a fake out. I’m not thoughtful but a chin rub is a good stalling tactic. I read and daydream with the palm of my hand covering half my face. By noon, I’m sliding my hand

all over my face to check on my 5 o’clock shadow. I don’t know if it counts, but sometimes I crack my knuckles on my jaw. I never knew how much I touched my face until I was told not to by health officials. Somebody tells me not to do something, I have to do it. They put me in an MRI machine and say, “don’t move,” well, that means I have to move. They say don’t move and I immediately do a little

shimmy. When the dentist says, "relax," I want to start a fight. I guess I wouldn’t have done too well in the Garden of Eden. (In the updated version, Adam says, “Did you wash that?” after Eve takes a bite of the apple). It’s the worst time to be told not to touch your face. What do you do when you’re stressed, get bad news, or you hear you might get the Coronavirus? You put your hand on your forehead. As humans have done for twenty thousand years. Now what are you supposed to do, wash your hands before placing that self-calming hand on your head? And it’s not just washing, it’s washing for twenty seconds. I mean, I’d like to do the basics to protect against viruses but come on, twenty seconds to wash your hands? How are you supposed to do that when you have to check your phone every seven seconds? Germs, schmerms, I’ve gotta check Insta and Twitter.

Page 5 I read we’re not supposed to panic but that was after I washed my hands before flossing the other day. Washing my hands made the floss string slippery, so I couldn’t get any traction and it wound up stuck between two teeth. No one was home, so I knocked on the neighbor’s door to ask them to take it out with a tweezers. But they couldn’t open the door to help because they had stocked up on so much toilet paper. Officials say a one-week supply of food, water, and essentials is enough. How much toilet paper do people need? Sheesh, cut down on the roughage. I may forget to wash my hands. I may scratch my face. But I don’t have to hoard. I am prepared. There might even be way to make a buck. I have a bidet. Which I’m making a pay toilet. You run out of toilet paper? Come on over. Just don’t shake my hand or touch my face on the way out.

Pay It Forward WITH A TASTE OF MADAGASCAR RIGHT HERE IN ROCKAWAY By Kami-Leigh Agard

To find authentic Malagasy cuisine is near impossible in NYC, but this Saturday, March 13, two locals are opening their doors to host a magical foodie experience that will be just as exotic and untapped as the Indian Ocean island country, Madagascar, itself—and it’s all for a good cause. Proceeds from this event, a gourmand’s delight, go toward Mission Madagascar 2020, a fundraiser aimed to bring water filters to the country, where almost half of the population does not have access to clean water, leading to rampant sickness and disease, especially amongst children and elderly. According to Rockaway Beach resident, Rebekkah Thompson, she and her husband, Jim’s, passion for food and missionary work inspired them to come up with hosting their "Taste of

Madagascar" event. Thompson shared, “My husband’s first trip bringing the water filters and Bibles to Madagascar was last September, and he came back gushing about the entire experience. We've always been involved with water projects for Africa, starting with generating funds for well water in Malawi. Then when my husband met Pastor Dinah Ratsimbajaona, president of the Evangelical Alliance in Madagascar, he learned about the country’s water crisis. Madagascar is not

a place you can dig because it’s a mining country, so Pastor Dinah told us about how effective the water filters have been in villages, where sometimes the only water resources are rivers, which in most cases, are contaminated.” While Madagascar is known for being home to some of the most unique and unusual species of creatures in the whole world, with 90% of the wildlife found nowhere else on Earth (some immortalized by cartoon films), and immigration from far away as Indonesia that has given its people a distinct cultural identity—the fourth biggest island in the world, located in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of South Africa, is lesser known for its lack of clean water. According to international nonprofit, WaterAid, almost half of Malagasy people have no clean water, and around 9 in ten still have nowhere decent to go to

the toilet. Thompson said after learning about the country’s water plight, she and her husband pledged to help with not just fundraising for the water filters, but also bringing them to hard-to-reach villages. Each filter costs $50 and can last up to 10 years if used properly and regularly cleaned. “Pastor Dinah’s ministry is not just about distributing these water filters, but also teaching villagers how to use and clean them. If they don’t have fresh water, many of them get their water from the river, which for most, is their only water source, and unfortunately is toxic, killing babies, and causing terrible diseases. So since we feel very passionately about water, we just thought that we had to get involved in this project. “Pastor Dinah said to my husband, ‘Jim, come to Africa.’ The only traveling my husband has done is on cruises going into international waters, so for him to consider traveling to Africa was quite out of his comfort zone, but the idea and cause really stayed with him, and so he went last September and had a fantastic trip. We raised money for the water filters and the trip’s cost, including a helicopter that flew him and others to some of the villages, where there are no roads to get into. For three and a half weeks, Jim helped train pastors on how to

use the filters.” Thompson said a dual mission of the trip was to bring Bibles to villages, that do not have a Bible in their own language, as in Madagascar they are many different tribes with their own dialects. “There are villages, where you can’t walk, much less drive. If you walked, it would take weeks, but these local Malgasy pastors walk and sleep in the jungle for days and weeks to come to these meetings when Pastor Dinah is there, not even to get a whole Bible, but a portion of it, like the Book of John, so they can translate it for people in their village.” Thompson said when her husband returned to Rockaway from his trip, besides gushing about the people and his missionary work, he also raved

about the food. “When Jim returned, he kept talking about the food he ate there, and because I love to cook, I too got excited, and together we got the idea to host a "Taste of Madagascar" event in Rockaway as a fundraiser. On the menu for the "Taste of Madagascar" are savory dishes: dried beef (hen’omby maina), rice with vegetables (vary amin’anana); and desserts: Malagasy donut (mofogasy), koba (a sweet made by wrapping ground peanuts, mashed bananas, honey and corn flour, all steamed in banana leaves)— and more delish treats. Besides eating, attendees will also get to view the photo gallery from the trip last year, and enjoy traditional Malagasy music. “Last year we did a photo gallery of the trip. People loved the photos so much, they bought them. We raised a good amount of money for the water filters, and we’re hoping to exceed what we raised this year, as the group also brings toys and soccer balls for the children,

and eye glasses. I love cooking, hosting and seeing people enjoy food. I grew up in a Puerto Rican household, and one way in which we communicated love was through food. Cooking and serving food is an avenue for me to share love, and I am thankful I can do that. “My husband believes missionary work starts in serving your own community, and we do that by praying and visiting with the youth, elderly in nursing homes, and our NYPD officers. And for him to do this missionary work in Madagascar has been such a blessing, and we just want to involve our Rockaway community in sharing God’s love with Madagascar,” Thompson said. With 150 blue bows donated by WISH, many adults and children from the neighborhood came out to decorate the trees along Newport Avenue, between Beach 116th and Beach 149th Streets, with blue ribbons. The purpose of this event was to show the NYPD that Rockaway residents support them, and are appreciative of all their hard work and effort in keeping our community safe. The event proved to be successful, attracting many people proudly participating in the challenge. Students and teachers from St. Fran-

Law enforcement officials arrived in their Unit Truck 6, and spent time with the children in attendance, educating them on how their vehicle works and when they would need to use the truck. They also let students take pictures inside and outside of the truck. The children were so grateful to dedicate their free time to help support the NYPD, that SFDSCA 6th grader, Tess Kuhlman said, “I already completed all of my community service for the year, but I just really wanted to help and support the NYPD.” The day’s event was a success in spreading the message that Rockaway residents support the NYPD, and all that they do for our community. WISH member, and organizer of the event, Christine James, expressed her gratitude for the great turnout by saying to all who participated, “Remember, what we can’t do alone, we can do together.”

By Beth Hanning "Wait Until 8th" for Cellphones For those of you who read my column regularly, you know I often get ideas from social media. My sister has two children: a daughter, age 10, and a son who is four. Of course, my niece, Riley, wants a cell phone. And her argument is “Mom, everyone has one except for me.” I truly admire my sister for standing up for her decision to not purchase a cell phone for her daughter and I hope she sticks to her guns. She has joined an online group called “Wait Until 8th.” This group of parents have agreed to wait until eighth grade to purchase phones for their children.

The data about children and cell phones is staggering. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children are spending an average of seven hours a day in front of some media-related screen. It also states that 69% of children ages two to five can use a computer mouse but only 11% can tie their shoes! I have some personal data: I have been teaching for over 20 years and the way students behave has changed dramatically. I see it in the classroom and with the teens I work with outside of the classroom. In the beginning of my career, students would say, “Oh Mrs. Hanning, I was

nervous about the grade I was going to receive.” Now they say, “Mrs. Hanning I cannot take that exam. I have anxiety.” Or, they cannot give an oral presentation, because of their anxiety which is also documented in their records. I truly believe I did not know what the word, anxiety, was when I was in high school. And I believe that this said anxiety is from them Googling things and from spending too much time in front of their computers. Another thing I have noticed is that students’ background knowledge has all but diminished. During literature lessons, I often like to show clips of films or television shows to illustrate a point or teach a certain element we are working on that day. Ninety-nine percent of all things I show are from popular culture that is pretty recent. And 99% of my students do not know the popular culture reference. It has become so bizarre to me I have started a Google Doc titled: Stuff Kids Don’t Know. Again, this is not just in my classroom but also with kids outside of

The Rockaway Times my school building. This data is from all across cultures and economic demographics. I know we are all addicted to our phones, but parents, please, take the phones away from the kids for a few hours a day. Make a set time for all phones to be in a drawer and under no circumstances should smaller children (who have to have a phone for safety purposes, another column) have cell phones in their bedrooms overnight! Do not tell me they need it for their alarm. One, you can wake them for school and two, they still make alarm clocks! When I typed in alarm clocks on Amazon they actually have a search for “Alarm clocks for kids.” The prices start as reasonable as $9.99. Buy one. P.S.: Some of my students prompted a new entry on the Google Doc and this was that kids do not know why 12:00 would blink on an alarm clock…. It is irresponsible for any medical provider to create unnecessary public alarm because of a patient who expresses symptoms that could be caused by a variety of illnesses. With limited exception, it is against various laws, such as the federal HIPAA law, for SJEH or any other hospital to reveal the protected health information (PHI) of patients. When someone is quarantined, does that mean that they have COVID-19? Answer, no. When someone is quarantined because of potential exposure to COVID-19, this does not mean that they have COVID-19. Do any SJEH staff members have COVID-19? No. There are no SJEH staff members who have tested positive for COV-

ID-19. Was/is SJEH prepared for COVID-19? Yes. SJEH was prepared for COVID-19 before COVID-19 even came into existence. The hospital follows clinically accepted infectious disease guidelines and protocols to help contain and control the spread of any infectious disease while providing optimal care to the affected patient. As an “infectious disease,” a COVID-19 case would fall under these protocols. This steady uptick of cases has prompted both the mayor and the governor to enact a spate of drastic measures, including canceling the NYC Half-Marathon that was scheduled for this Saturday and the New York International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Center. As The Rockaway Times was going to press, it was learned that the St. Patrick's Day Parade scheduled for Tuesday, March 17 in the City, has been canceled. It is the first time in the 258 year history of the parade that it has been canceled. According to the mayor and

governor, it’s about social distancing to minimize spread of the disease. Several universities and school districts across the state have closed, some opting for remote instruction, including St. John’s University in Queens; and locally, the Challenge Charter Schools in Far Rockaway announced Monday that it would close its K-8 school sites and offices for three days later this week in light of the recent confirmed case at SJEH. On Tuesday, NYC school officials announced that parent-teacher conferences scheduled at public schools this week would not be held in person, and would be conducted over the phone or by video chat instead. Some working local residents have already been told by their employers to work from home. One information systems worker living on the peninsula said he was told to stay home since last Thursday after reporting flu symptoms. He said, “I just had the cold, but I guess that my boss wanted to err on the side of caution. Then on Friday, my

entire department was told that we will all be working remotely indefinitely. I like working from home, but it just makes the reality of the virus even scarier.” A Rockaway Beach resident, mum of two, stated, “I wish I could work from home, but my company has not given any hint that could be a possibility. I’m just worried that if NYC schools close, who’s going to watch my kids? Now that’s going to be a big problem for me, and many other parents.” Globally, more than 119,000 people have been infected with the virus, according to official counts. As of Wednesday morning, more than 4,000 people had died. In the United States, the number of known cases of coronavirus infection passed 1,000 on Tuesday night, with cases in 37 states and Washington, D.C. At least 31 people have died. Lifelong Friendships in Rockaway RANDI AND MELISSA By Marina Cregan

While it may be hard for most people to remember anything from when they were six years old, Rockaway native, Randi Savron would beg to differ. I’m sure most of you know how unreliable those pesky Dayton Towers elevators can be, leaving you stuck for several minutes at a time. Well, while most find being stuck in an elevator a terrible experience, Savron is thankful that the elevator broke down that one day when she was six years old, because that was the day she met her absolute, “true, bestie bestie,” Melissa Berger-Afragola. Stranded in the 8000 Dayton Towers elevator with both their mothers, Savron and Berger-Afragola’s lifelong friendship began. Savron and Berger-Afragola’s friendship seemed almost destined from the start. Growing up in the same building, it was very rare that the two weren’t together. Whether it was just the two, or it was a whole family affair, Savron and Berger-Afragola’s friendship quickly transitioned into something more—a sense of family. The girls enjoyed their childhood schooling together, as they went to P.S. 183 (class of ’73), J.H.S. 180 (class of ’76), and Beach Channel High School (class of ’79). As kids, they loved spending their summer days on the beach, and summer nights at the good old, Rockaway Playland. They loved Playland so much, that the duo even got part-time jobs there working the rollercoaster and bumper cars. Savron said she’ll never forget the day in 1986, when she and Berger-Afragola watched from the boardwalk as Rockaway Playland was dismantled, never to open again. As she reflected on their childhood in Rockaway, Savron said, “Everyone got along, and it was a great sense of community. The days of the bungalows were wonderful.” Like most Rockaway girls, they loved living walking dis-

tance to the beach, spending most of their free time there. Embracing their true Rockaway roots, they even enjoyed hanging out on the beach at night. Even though Savron’s parents wanted to throw her a traditional, big “Sweet 16,” Savron insisted on celebrating the big day with a beach party, right on Beach 80th Street. With the

help of her brother, Savron and Berger-Afragola invited more than 100 people to the beach for Savron’s bonfire birthday bash. Savron’s beach “Sweet 16” even had a full band blasting from the boardwalk. As much as they enjoyed the beach, Rockaway also had some other hotspots that the girls frequented. For these two, their

all-time favorite places were the Rain Tower, Dingy Dan’s, and Connolly’s. When reflecting on all the great memories they had, Savron said, “I look at Melissa as more than just my BFF of over 50 years, but as the sister that I never had.” Although Berger-Afragola moved out of Rockaway 36 years ago, their friendship remains just as strong as when it began. The two speak practically every day, whether it be chatting on the telephone, or just sending a quick check-in text to each other. And since Savron continues to live in Rockaway today, Berger-Afragola always has a reason to return back to the peninsula. At their last reunion, the girls were even able to meet up with some of their former classmates from P.S. 183 and J.H.S. 180. Savron said, “When she came back, it was like she never left because of how incredible this community is.” When thinking about her lifelong friendship with Berger-Afragola, and how much it has evolved since their Dayton Towers days, Savron considers herself incredibly blessed to still live and be a part of the Rockaway community. Savron is very active throughout the peninsula, as she recently helped plan the 40th Class Reunion of Beach Channel High. With a total of 75 people in attendance at the Knights of Columbus, the reunion was a total success. Shortly after their graduation in 1979, Savron told Berger-Afragola and the rest of their classmates, “Somehow, someway, I’m going to live 200 ft. off the beach.” And when those who had moved away asked her why she chose to remain in Rockaway after all these years, with no hesitation she said, “If you stick to your dreams, even in the small community of Rockaway, you can do it.” While the tan lines may fade, the memories made here on the peninsula last a lifetime. Here’s to another 50 years of friendship for Randi Savron and Melissa Berger-Afragola!

All That Jazz If you live in Rockaway and love jazz, you have some great options in Manhattan. A ferry ride will get you to several potential destinations in the city. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s take a look at a few. The Jazz Standard club is on East 27th Street, and is downstairs from the barbeque restaurant, Blue Smoke. The venue is cozy, and tickets are relatively inexpensive. The mermaid and I saw the Mingus Big Band there one night and it was only $30 per ticket. Dinner is available, and is pretty good and the cocktail drink menu is extensive, but honestly, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where they make their money. The Big Mingus Band is a 14-person jazz ensemble playing Charlie Mingus compositions. Mingus was a bassist in the 50s and 60s. He played with all the jazz greats like Dizzy

Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Louis Armstrong. This is a cool venue and if you are going, I would recommend the Mingus Big Band. The Blue Note on West 3rd Street is also a cozy place, the tables are close together, and the tickets can be more expensive. But they get big name acts that you can see and hear very close up. The food is good, drinks more modestly priced, and the club is in the Village and great to walk around both before and after a show. If you like more modern twists on jazz, this is the place for you, because they book mainstream acts from today, and many times will include fusion type jazz. A solid choice. If you are ok with heading up to Midtown, then I would recommend Birdland on 44th Street. This venue has both an upstairs and downstairs stage. They book a wider variety of acts here including big bands, jazz singers and pianists, and themed acts, like the Django

Reinhardt Festival. The tickets are affordable here, the food good, and drinks reasonable. My preference is the upstairs stage because the seating is arranged in a tiered way that ensures a great line of sight wherever you sit. Of course, Birdland is named after Charlie Parker, whose nickname was Bird. On West 60th Street in the Time Warner Center is the Rose Theater where Wynton Marsalis' Jazz at Lincoln Center venue is. This is a larger venue then any of the above, more expensive in every way, but if you are able to catch Wynton Marsalis, you are in for a special treat. This type of jazz is more sophisticated, less gritty than the downtown jazz of the 1940s and 50s. If you take the ferry in for one of these shows, it makes sense to take an Uber or Lyft back to Rockaway. It might cost about $60, but if you consider that it cost only $2.75 to get in, then the average cost is about $30

to get in and out, without worrying about having more than one or two drinks and driving home. If you would rather stay in Rockaway, there are choices here too. Thai Rock, although mostly a rock venue, books jazz bands too, sometimes on Sundays. And in the back of Whitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, there is a venue known as Rustwoods, where you can get Whitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food, bring your own drinks, and catch one of the several Mike Severino jazz ensembles that play there all summer. Jazz, like the blues, is an American art form invented and perfected here in our home country. It grew out of the Big Band era when several artists decided to go to smaller groups and experiment with the art form. The big names are Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Ask Alexa to play some for you, you just might like it.

Dear Editor: I am a past president of the Nassau County Medical Society and a past member of the House of Delegates of the Medical Society of the State of New York and, as such, fought many a battle in the malpractice wars. Unfortunately, we lost the war, and Dr. Galvin’s words ring oh, so true. I, along with many of my fellow physicians, left independent practice because the malpractice insurance premiums were so high, and the insurance companies' reimbursement for patient care was so low, that it became impossible to maintain a private practice. The result was a job in corporate medical practice and well, more on that at another time. As an example, my insurance premium for practicing general surgery exceeded $146,000 per year. This is more than the yearly income for most middle-class families. Add to that the reluctance of insurance companies to pay realistic fees and, in many case, their reluctance to pay anything at all, and you can see where independent medical practice is going. The problem behind this is partisan politics at both the state and federal levels. In New York State, a former speaker of the Assembly stated that we would get tort reform: “Over [his] dead body.” Of course, he was associated with a plaintiff ’s

law firm. The State Senate Republican majority leader was found guilty of forcing one of the state’s malpractice insurers to employ his son who, apparently, did little to no work for his salary. So, the New York State Legislature had every reason in the world to prevent tort reform from becoming a reality. And, in the end, the physicians of our state have been royally shafted. As for the electronic medical record, I can tell you that, from my vantage point in practice, it is more of a detriment than a help. My patients respond to my care because I know what I’m doing, not because of any computer program template. In fact, I spend more time typing and clicking than I do examining and speaking to patients and families. My timing of notes in the electronic medical records (EMR) is considered more important than the care that I render. My eyesight is suffering as a result of hours spent in front of a computer screen, and I resent the fact that clicks take precedence over patient care in this day and age. I could go on and on, but I applaud Dr. Galvin for bringing these problems to the public forum rather than writing about the disease of the week. I have never met the man, but he deserves kudos for his insights and for making readers aware of some of the undercurrents of medical practice in 2020. Great job! Burton J. Glass, MD FACS

This past weekend, whilst I was over at the Rockaway Stop and Shop picking up various staples and sundries I probably didn't need, I chanced upon an elderly married couple, both neighbors from Broad Channel, engaged in an excited discussion about the fact that an Uber driver had tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus, and was being held in isolation

for treatment at St. John's Episcopal Hospital. The husband appeared to be extremely concerned about this issue, as he feared that he was in an "at risk" group" because of his age and some health-related issues. In an attempt to temper the husband's fears, I explained that if he was worried that he may have utilized this Uber driver's services recently, the Health Department would have already identified the driver's individual customers and reached out to them by this time. My comments were met by a look of confusion from the husband which was explained when his wife chimed in, "The old goat is as deaf as a rock, you have to scream at him to make sure he can hear you. Can't hear a thing." I inquired if her husband had, in fact, utilized a local Uber service recently to which she responded loudly, "The old curmudgeon couldn't hail a cab to save his life, let alone operate a smart phone to hail an Uber ride. Besides, I

can't for the life of me understand why he is so upset about this. His eyesight is so bad that the DMV wouldn't renew his license. If he needs to travel, I am his personal chauffeur." I suggested that if he continues to be very upset about the virus issue, perhaps she should take him to see his personal physician for a checkup just so that he could be assured everything is OK. As I was speaking, the husband kept waving at his wife yelling, "Huh! What did he say?" The wife simply sighed and continued, "That's a non-starter...I just recently had him at his doctor and it was a disaster. After waiting over an hour to see the physician, the nurse explained that she had to take his blood pressure and all you could hear from him was 'What'd she say?' I had to scream at him that she wanted to check his blood pressure to make him understand. Then the nurse told him she wanted to check his weight and

we went through the "'What'd she say?'" routine once again. I yelled in his ear that he had to step on the scale to have his weight taken. Finally, the nurse stated she needed a urine and stool sample and old faithful over there yelled back at me, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Fer Christ's sake, what'd she say?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I couldn't take it anymore so I told the old geezer to simply give the nurse his underwear so we could both get the hell out of there.'" As we were going through the check-out line, hubby spied a tabloid headline that read: "The World Health Organization has declared that dogs cannot transmit Coronavirus, and there is no reason to quarantine dogs anymore." Apparently his eyesight isn't all that bad as while pointing at the headline he suddenly turned to me smiling and said, "Look, good news! W.H.O. let the Dogs Out!" Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

COMMUNITY BOARD 14 Continued from Page 2 When public speaking came to an end, the Council for Airport Opportunity provided the room with a presentation. Representatives from the council stated that they will be opening an office on Mott Avenue in about 2-3 weeks, which will be a career center for people who are interested in jobs in the aviation industry. The council assured the board that there are a lot of job opportunities, and they are, “embracing the community, and improving lives.” Following this presentation, CB14 member, Felicia Johnson, spoke on behalf of St. John’s Hospital, regarding the patient who has been diagnosed with the coronavirus. Johnson said the patient has been in isolation since he was admitted, and is in fact, getting better. Johnson said that the hospital is safe, open for business, and is following the Department of Health and Central Disease Center (CDC) protocols. The next presentation was from the Department of Design

and Construction (DDC), providing an update on the Queens Public Library Arverne branch expansion on Beach 54th Street. This was a follow-up discussion from a previous CB14 meeting. In this presentation, the DDC stated that by 2023, an annex will be created of 5,000 sq. ft., with a public community space, which will allow more room for children activities. This annex will include audio-visual technology, a living green wall so children can water and watch plants grow, as well as a solar panel roof, so children can see how much power the panel’s producing. Because this additional space will be more children-oriented, the existing library’s community room will be more for the adult programs. In terms of the long-term plan, the DDC stated that after the annex is built and proves successful, they will be able to apply for additional federal funds to rebuild the existing library. After constant back and forth, CB14 finally motioned to approve the Arverne library expansion plan. Chris Tedesco, from the Transportation Committee, was the evening’s last presenter. Tedesco

began with proposed safety improvements on Cross Bay Blvd. He stated that the Broad Channel Civic unanimously approved this safety plan back in February. The plan includes that the bike lane redesigns will be in both directions, including a northbound crossover, allowing one to cross at 1st Road to the larger bike lane. They’re also moving the parking lane out from the curb, as well as eliminating the left turn protected lane at East 4th Rd., but not the actual left turn. Aside from these safety improvements, Tedesco also stated that a signal study was conducted in November at the BCAC ball field, because the Broad Channel Civic has been advocating for a traffic light in this spot. Currently, they are awaiting the study’s result, and hopefully, a traffic light will be installed. Tedesco then moved on to the Queens Bus Network Re-Design, and stated, “We got the shaft on pretty much everything.” He said the committee did not see anything redeeming for Rockaway residents at all. Regarding the possible elimination of the Q53, Tedesco did state that it will most

likely end up in the next rendition, but as it stands right now, it will still be eliminated. For the other bus re-routes, he reported that the NYC Transit Authority couldn’t even give them a definitive ending for these new routes. Due to their consistent lack of clarity on specific issues of the redesign, Tedesco said, “It’s unacceptable that they can’t tell us where this new route begins and ends…they don’t know the plan themselves.” After Tedesco relayed his disappointment in the Transportation Committee’s meeting with the NYC Transit Authority, CB14 agreed to send a letter to the DOT, consisting of a bullet point list stating everything that is wrong with the redesigns. As the meeting came to a close, the packed room that it was at the start, was nearly empty. The remaining board members, and the very few community members in the audience, were astonished at the lack of participation and disrespect of the board members that had left early. CB14 member, Jon Cori, expressed his frustration by stating, “It’s disgusting to see so many people leave before the meeting is even over.”

At just 24, Megan Rochelle, owner of Trends By Meg, has been wowing local women of all ages with trendy and stylish accessories. Rochelle began the business in May of 2014, when she was only a freshman in college. Fashionista that she is, Meg had always loved accessorizing, transforming her entire outfit by simply swapping in a fun pair of earrings, or statement necklace. Because of her love for fashion, Rochelle decided to start her own business. With the help of her

parents, she was able to get in contact with multiple vendors, and create her signature pink and green logo. Her first official launch, back in May of 2014, was a “Shop and Sip,” hosted by neighbor and family friend, Linda Martin, which turned out to be a complete success. And ever since then, Rochelle’s business took off. Most of Trends By Meg sales are conducted through Facebook and Instagram, but Rochelle continues to book at home “Shop and Sips,” as well as selling her products at many different vendor events. Rochelle said, “I truly believe that the Rockaway community is so supportive in ‘shopping small,’ and I am so grateful for that!” Because she is so grateful for the Rockaway community’s ongoing support, she is a firm believer in giving back to those in need and our community. Rochelle is on the board for Catch A Cure 5K Run/Walk, and donates all of that day’s proceeds to the ROCKAWAY WISH (Women Inspired In Service and Help), so WISH can use those funds to help community members who are dealing with cancer. In addition to WISH, Rochelle has also donated back to local organizations, like the Graybeards and St. Francis de Sales Parish. Rochelle said, “I am always looking to help

Recognize and note the signs of overload. Feeling tired. Not knowing where you are for a second. Feeling drained. Feeling down. Overload is different from stress, yet needs attention just as much, because it could be the underlying cause of stress which we all know by now is detrimental to a good, happy life. First thing to do is to note the cause, or causes, of overload. Often it’s a buildup: needs of work, family, friends, pets, organizations you belong to, etc.

etc. Fill it in. Note it all. Sometimes we just forge ahead – because we can “do it all” and then BOOM some of those signs above start becoming... start manifesting. You will realize: “Wow, I’m dealing with and doing a lot.” Just to yourself. Just come to terms with all of it to yourself. No one is going to tell you that you are so incredibly amazing because you are dealing with so much because they are going through the same! Number one: don’t take anything else on. What can I do now so that I can have a free day tomorrow?

The continual going going going has no room for: “what am I feeling now?”, no room to think: “is this good right now?”, no room to be in the present moment with conscious, feeling decisions about what we’re dong at the moment in time. It’s almost like a train proceeding on a track with no stops – no checks and balances. Determine what your checks and balances should be – for you. No two of us are alike, so only you can know. What is your barometer? When is it too much? When are you on OVERload? Back off, take a long, deep breath and find a way to let some things go for the moment. Get back to establishing a balance and go from there. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Over the past decade, cigarette smoking has continued to decline, but the use of electronic cigarettes (ECs) is rising. Current estimates are that about 4% of the U.S. population uses ECs, or vapes, as it is commonly termed. While ECs come in all shapes and sizes, they all use the same technology, as seen in the illustration. When turned on, a battery heats up a heating element which causes the liquid in the vaporizer chamber to aerosolize. The resulting aerosol is commonly and incorrectly called a vapor (vapor is the gaseous state of a substance). The liquid in the vaporizer chamber, or reservoir, is not water, but is either propylene glycol (antifreeze) or vegetable glycerin plus flavoring agents and additives (i.e. nicotine, cannabis oil). The heating coils are made from metal alloys that contain iron,

Escape The Vape chromium, carbon, nickel, or other metals. Despite the perception of being less harmful than cigarettes, ECs are far from harmless. Their use is associated with adverse health consequences that not only affect the lungs, but the cardiovascular system as well. The variety of detrimental effects ranges from thermal injuries related to the malfunction of the battery or heating element to a recent cluster or respiratory illnesses suspected to be related to the use of ECs. When exposed to high temperatures, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin decompose, generating harmful carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes including acrolein, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde. These compounds cause oxidative stress resulting in increased cardiovascular risk, altered platelet function, airway epithelial (lining) damage, and disturbances in gas exchange function, or lung function. In addition, both

cannabis and nicotine have been proven to cause damage to developing human brains, making the use of ECs in anyone under the age of 21 very dangerous. Since April 2019, clusters of vaping-related acute lung injury (VpALI) have been reported and the incidence is rising. Most of these patients were previously healthy teenagers who developed rapid onset of symptoms, including cough and severe dyspnea (shortness of breath), after vaping. There have been a number of deaths, and, so far at least, it is more commonly seen in those whose ECs contained cannabis. The mechanism of lung injury is not yet well understood. Lung biopsies have shown chemical pneumonitis (lung inflammation). Hemoptysis (coughing up blood) has also been reported with cannabis vapers. Antibiotics have been helpful, but the specter of permanent, severe lung damage is real. The Centers for Disease Con-

trol (CDC) recommends routine screening of all patients for EC use, with subsequent counseling aimed at quitting for those who screen positive. Many patients with VpALI have reported using ECs obtained â&#x20AC;&#x153;from a friend of a friendâ&#x20AC;? or ECs purchased on the streets, where they are cheaper. Exposure to EC aerosols can be harmful and, unlike traditional cigarettes, may be acute and life-threatening. Careful investigation and research are needed to understand the clusters of VpALI cases, and ominously, many researchers feel that the cases of lung injury that have been seen so far may be just the tip of the iceberg. Members of the St. Columcille Branch of the Friends of Irish Freedom (FOIF) marched on St. Patrick’s Day in 1919, one year after women made their official appearance in New York’s annual parade. The FOIF was an American organization with national headquarters in New York. The FIOF supported Ireland’s new Republican Party in its effort to gain independence from Great Britain. Serves: 4 Ingredients: 8 ounces of sweet Italian sausage (6 links) cut small 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 bunch scallions, chopped, white and green parts divided 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped 1 pint of cherry tomatoes, halved 12 ounces of orecchiette 8 cups of baby spinach, roughly chopped ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese Directions: Bring large pot of salted water to a boil. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil

Page 35 in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the sausage and brown. Add the white part of the scallions and rosemary and cook until scallions start to wilt. Add the tomatoes and ½ cup of the boiled water. Let simmer while the pasta is cooking. Cook the pasta, generally 11 minutes. Reserve ½ cup of water and drain the pasta. Add the pasta to the tomato mixture along with the spinach and half the scallion greens. Toss to coat the pasta and wilt the spinach. If it’s too dry, add more of the boiled water. Season with salt, drizzle with remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and remove from the heat. Sprinkle the cheese over the pasta and toss well. Divide among shallow bowls and sprinkle remaining scallions greens.

Rockaway Swimmer Crowned NY State HS Swim Champion On Saturday, March 7 at the 2020 NYSPHSAA Swimming Championships at Nassau County Aquatic Center, Rockaway’s own, Sandon Karinsky, took home the gold in the 50 FREE final with a time of 20.81. Sandon nearly took another NY State HS Championship gold medal in the thrilling final of the 100 FLY, narrowly missing by .04 with a time of 49.47. Karinsky, the St. Francis Prep team captain, had previously won gold at the CHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships in early February. A busy schedule is just ahead as Karinsky will be competing in the Junior Olympics (March 13 – 15) at Nassau County Aquatic Center and then onto Flor-

ida, at the NCSA JUNIOR NATIONALS on March 2021, when he will compete in the 50 FREE, 50 FLY and 100 FLY. Best of luck to Sandon!

ROCKAWAY RUGBY HOST FREE YOUTH CLINICS

Over the next three weekends (March 14-15, March 21-22 and March 28-29), Rockaway Youth Rugby will be offering free youth clinics. No experience is necessary, and this is a great opportunity to participate in the fastest growing youth sport in the country. Clinics are open to boys and girls currently in fifth to eighth grades and will be held at Fort Tilden at 10 a.m. each day. There will be clinics for younger grades later this spring.

The Club will also have a high school level program, if there is enough interest. Rockaway Youth Rugby teaches players sportsmanship, teamwork and puts the biggest emphasis on having fun. All coaches are certified by USA Rugby. Over the past few years, many former Rockaway Rugby youth players have gone on to play rugby at the collegiate level.
