ROCKAWAY STRONG = ROCKAWAY SMART If we want to be Rockaway Strong, we’ve got to be Rockaway Smart. The flu is Hurricane Irene. The Coronavirus is Superstorm Sandy. That was the spot-on metaphor used by civic activist John Cori. Maybe it’s even worse. Maybe this is Superstorm Sandy in slow motion. In any case, Hurricane Irene made us complacent and we were not prepared for Sandy. And the government was least prepared of all. After Sandy, you know what we did? We helped ourselves.
We helped our neighbors. We’ve got to do the same now. At the moment, the hardest part of this is the uncertainty. No matter how extreme, most crises are short and we deal with the aftermath. Even when death occurs. We plan a funeral, we grieve. We do what we have to do. But now? We’re not sure what’s next. There’s really no precedent. And there is no aftermath. Not yet. But we can prepare. And pitch in. If you can, check in on the elderly, shop for them, ask what
they need. If you can, stay home. You might be young, you might feel great, you also might be a carrier. You’re more likely to become a carrier if you’re hanging out in crowds. And then you might be the carrier who brings it into your own home. If you can, order in from a local restaurant. If you can, buy a gift card. Hey, this sucks. It’s surreal. But it never hurts to remember that we live in a place where good people make all the difference. We saw a Japanese proverb posted by the Harbor Light—Fall Seven Times, Stand Up Eight. If the Harbor Light can muster that attitude, so can the rest of us. No matter what. There won’t always be proof that extreme measures worked. If you don’t get sick, you might say, see, it was a big overreaction. They didn’t need to do all that. Ok, you get bragging rights. Big deal. Of course, you might have gotten sick (or died) without those measures. And you might never know. But, in any case, you don’t
The Rockaway Times want to be saying, more should have been done. The economy is of great concern, of course. We don’t want the cure to be worse than the disease but the economy comes after the health and well-being of people. The Rockaway Times is a small business and at great risk with a sick or stalled economy. We need a thriving Rockaway economy. But I’m the publisher and I want my family, my friends, staff, and you to be safe. Even at the risk of going out of business. This is tough medicine. I think it’s needed and we should heed the words of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the expert in charge. “People always say, well, the flu does this, the flu does that. The flu has a mortality of 0.1%. This has a mortality rate of 10 times that. That’s the reason I want to emphasize we have to stay ahead of the game in preventing this.” We’re in this together. Championship. (About a million maniacs were part of that team, too!) Winning the City Champs was a big deal, and we were given watches to commemorate the feat. It was a treasured keepsake—until that day I put it on the roof of my car and drove away. Probably in the Top 10 of my all-time knuckleheaded moves. I wrote about my absent-mindedness in a column a couple of years ago. And then a few days later, a small package arrived at my house and goose bumps followed. A 1977 City Champs watch—the one shown here—came to me in the mail. No return address, no signature, no nothing. It wasn’t the one I left on top of the car. It was the generous gesture of one of my teammates. I had zero idea who might have sent me the replacement watch. I emailed all my teammates asking who sent it. Crickets. Nothing, no one copping to it. I put the watch in safe place and kinda forgot about it.
Hoops Friendships Keep Ticking I’ve been blabbering about Two Bikes and A Ball, my recent bike-ride-basketball odyssey with Rick Horan, who can, uhm, ride a bike. The basketball part? Well, check out the video (Google: “Two Bikes and a Ball"—use the quotations). I’ve got to recommend watching the video and closing your eyes at the same time. If you peek, you’ll see what I mean. I posted something online that got a good amount of at-
tention, so I figured I’d put it in the paper for those of you who don’t “go on the computer.” Here goes: I don't live in the past. I'm STILL trying to make the NBA. I was reminded yesterday why I can trace all my best friends through basketball. On March 6, 1977, I was part of the Nazareth High School team that beat Power Memorial 59-57 at a packed Fordham University gym to win the NYC Catholic High School City

And then the other day, two and a half years later, this teammate emailed me to say he liked my videos, "Two Bikes and A Ball" on YouTube. And then he asks, ever guess who gave you the watch? I got goosebumps then, and I just got them writing this now. I have not seen this teammate in 40 years. I would like to give Billy “Chickie” Chandler a personal Standing Ovation. Teammate and friend for life. Now you know why I can’t stop playing basketball. PS: The watch is still ticking, baby.

Look For the Helpers By Katie McFadden
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” – Fred Rogers. As with any scary ordeal, the helpers, are helping. Despite the uncertainty and chaos, may in Rockaway are doing what they can to make this a little easier on those who many not have it so easy. In the hopes of spreading positivity, here are a few examples of how locals and businesses are helping each other. Lissa O’Shea of JKS Printing (188 Beach 116th Street) is offering half price copies to all students who need copies of worksheets, tests, etc. To make it easier, she is accepting the copies through email. Students can email JKSPrinting@gmail.com. “This way, you won’t have to share them,” O’Shea wrote. Firehouses are known to
cook their own meals, but for the sake of trying to help local businesses, the Beach 116th Street firehouse has decided to order takeout going forward. “In the FDNY, ‘the meal’ is a big part of the job culture. We shop each day and cook for ourselves. In light of all our local businesses struggling, my firehouse has decided that we will not cook for ourselves and instead pick local restaurants to cook lunch and dinner for us each day till we see light at the end of the tunnel,” firefighter John Burke said. "A small token, but if we all chip in we can keep these businesses afloat so they can serve us when this is all over. Buy gift certificates if you can. Anything to help them pay their rent till this blows over.” At a time when parents may now be faced with a situation where their kids are home from school, but they have to continue to work, several neighbors are offering assistance at low costs, and even
free. Many have taken to local Facebook groups such as Friends of Rockaway Beach to share their willingness to help. One woman, Rebekah Rice wrote, “If you are a parent and need some assistance with child care (no matter the age) please let me know. I can pick up and drop off, along with hanging out with them throughout the day until you get off work.” She has offered to do it free of charge. There are many other similar offers on this page, so if you’re not following already, considering doing so. In addition to child care, many have also offered to help go shopping for those who are elderly or unable to leave their homes. In addition to trying to operate his own business, Charlie D'Ancano of Georgina’s Bakery, is just one of many people offering to go shopping for what people need. His and many other offers can also be found on local Rockaway Facebook groups.
At a time when gyms have been forced to close, some are getting creative to continue to help their clients stay fit. CROM is now offering its members virtual at-home workout classes and boardwalk workouts. If you are a member, contact them at crom.mt@ gmail.com for schedules and more information. Burn Fitness has also resorted to outdoor classes. They are now offering some classes on the boardwalk and by the Riis Park clock, while keeping people socially distanced. Rockaway’s YMCA says that it will soon offer online workout classes and tips for people to stay fit while staying healthy. SFDS Goes Virtual By Marina Cregan
On Tuesday, March 17, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy (SFDSCA) went live. They began teaching remotely. SFDSCA is a oneto-one device school. Each student from grades Pre-K through eight has either a Google Chromebook or an iPad. The day started with Principal Dr. Chris Scharbach Ed.D, reciting the prayer, pledge, and morning announcements, as per usual. Then, each grade logs on to either Classroom Dojo or Google Calendar, where they are engaged in online learning, through either Google Zoom or Google Meets. Each student follows a daily schedule that closely mimics
their usual routine. Starting next week, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education will also be added to the daily online curriculum. John Brennan was born at what was Rockaway Beach Hospital and raised in Rockaway. He attended St. Camillus Catholic Academy and was an active member of the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s band as a bass drummer. Brennan was one of five siblings. The family spent many years living on Beach 101st Street before moving to Bayswater. Brennanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sisters, Susan Brennan Andresen and Barbara Brennan-Friedman, still call Rockaway home. As for John, his passion brought him elsewhere. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We used to go to Saratoga every summer. We rented a house up there on a lake in the early â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;60s. The man next door was a horse trainer and my brother, John, used to go there at five in the morning to help him clean out the barns and he got really attached to the horses,â&#x20AC;? Susan Brennan said. John spent some time working for the Steamfitters Local Union 638 but decided to follow his passion for horses in the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s. Brennan spent more than 40 years training horses and saw some wins, including the 1995 Merrie Annabelle and as a runner-up in the 2003 Hambletonian. His career would first bring
him to Yonkers and eventually New Jersey. Most recently, Brennan was a Standardbred Owners Association of New York Director representing horsemen at Yonkers. Despite leaving Rockaway, Brennanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister says Rockaway never left him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He loved Rockaway. He was off on Wednesdays and Sundays and on one of those days, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d come back here to visit,â&#x20AC;? Susan Brennan said. In addition to a successful career as a horse trainer, Brennan says her brother was a family man who loved his nieces and nephews; he was a good friend to many; a big NY Mets fan; a charitable man who consistently donated to St. Judeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, a man who earned the nickname, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Gentle Giant,â&#x20AC;? and an overall good guy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If anybody ever needed something, he was always there for every one of us,â&#x20AC;? Susan Brennan said. And he will truly be missed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My brother is gone and there is nothing we can do to bring him back,â&#x20AC;? Susan Brennan said. John Brennan would have celebrated his 70th birthday in June. He was the first confirmed coronavirus-related death in New Jersey. With coronavirus-closures now impacting plans, the Brennan family says a memorial Mass may be held at a future date.

Local Leaders Call Out the City for Illegal Shelter Operations By Marina Cregan
On Thursday, March 12, elected officials joined Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters (RSNS), in a press conference calling out New York City and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS), for their way of handling the opening of the Beach 101st homeless shelter without a contract. Organized by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, the press conference took place in her office on Beach 95th Street. Pheffer Amato was joined by Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., District Leader Lew Simon, and RSNS representatives, John Cori, Michael Scala and Torey Schnupp. Pheffer Amato began the press conference by providing background information regarding the proposal for the shelter. One year ago, there was a hearing with DHS and the
City of NY, regarding the possible opening of a shelter. Community members expressed their concerns and disapproval. They explained that the shelter’s location is not only in a school zone with thousands of students, but it is also in the middle of a flood zone. Phef-
fer Amato explained that our community expressed these concerns, not because they are against helping the homeless population, but because of what our community can handle with lacking infrastructure and resources. Clearly disregarding the community’s
concerns, our elected officials were frustrated, but knew that there is a process and as long as they fight hard, eventually DHS and NYC would have to listen. However, despite all efforts against the shelter, there are currently 10 homeless residents living in the shelter on Beach 101st. Pheffer Amato elaborated on the importance of the City Charter, which she thought would protect our community. According to the City Charter, she stated, “No contract, or agreement, executed pursuant to this charter, or other laws, shall be implemented until one copy has been filed with the comptroller, and either the comptroller has registered it, or 30 days has elapsed from the date of filing.” Pheffer Amato then explained that this means no city dollars can be spent until the contract is registered. The contract was sent to the comptroller’s office on February 20, and they are allowed to review it for 30 days after that date. If the comptroller’s office were to disapprove the contract, then it would be sent back to DHS and the process would be forced to start over again. After explaining background information regarding the contract regulations, Pheffer Amato asked important questions, stressing how serious and illegal the situation is. She asked, “Who’s paying for these workers currently employed in the shelter? Who’s protecting the workers and the residents? What happens if someone gets hurt, and whose dollars are paying for them?” Pheffer Amato then stated that DHS said this registration of the contract
is, “...merely only a formality,” meaning that DHS can force this contract to be registered. She expressed how unacceptable this is because non-elected officials have the final say in how our taxpayer dollars are being spent. Following Pheffer Amato, Addabbo then asked the city to simply, “Follow the rules.” Addabbo called out the Mayor’s Administration, asking why some businesses have to follow these contract rules, and now all of a sudden,

these rules don’t matter in regard to this homeless shelter. He elaborated on the ULURP process regarding large developments, stating that this process allows for public input. In regard to the homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street, Addabbo expressed how much public input the mayor’s office has received from our community, and yet, they still have not taken it into consideration. Representatives from RSNS closed the press conference by speaking on behalf of community members that are concerned about the operation of this homeless shelter. They thanked Pheffer Amato and Addabbo for their ongoing support regarding this situation and stressed their frustration with the mayor’s office for not respecting the community’s wishes. Torey Schnupp said, “You have met your match, the moment you laid eyes on Beach 101st Street. We demand answers. We want to know why our city is allowed to break laws, and why they
are not being held to the same standards that every city agency must follow.” She continued by stating that moving men into an illegal shelter not only puts these men at risk, but our entire community at risk. As John Cori said, “There’s been a hoax being perpetrated on the people, and especially on the homeless population.” The press conference concluded with officials asking the city and DHS to remove the existing 10 residents from the shelter and start over. They stressed that they’re not asking for much, but to just follow the rules that are set in the City Charter. Once proper legal measures are taken, and approved, then the shelter should be granted access to operate. But in the meantime, since no official contract has been signed regarding the opening of the shelter, it is illegal for the shelter to be operating. Pheffer Amato and Addabbo will present this information in Albany this week, in hopes of receiving support in urging the City to follow its own rules.

Local Resident Dies Due to Coronavirus Complications By Katie McFadden
A longtime fire marshal and a beloved neighbor has died due to complications from coronavirus. Belle Harbor resident John Knox is believed to be the first local resident to pass away due to Covid-19. He was 84. Many knew Knox as having a big smile and a heart to match. He was frequently seen around Beach 129th and was known as a man with a lot to say and a story to tell. He’s also been described as a man who was “strong as an ox,” and his life’s accomplishments can back that up. Knox was a U.S. Marine who served in Korea. He worked with the NYPD for two years. He then worked with the FDNY from 1960 through 1998, serving as a fire marshal for a majority of that time, according to a recent article in the New York Post. As a fire marshal, he sometimes investigated significant incidents like ter-
ror bombings committed by Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional, including the bombing of Fraunces Tavern in 1975, according to the Post. Although retired from the FDNY, he was still conducting private investigations up until he got sick. On February 26, Knox allegedly passed out and was taken to Mt. Sinai South Nassau Medical Center. Knox was experiencing flu symptoms. As Knox hadn’t been out of the country or hadn’t come in contact with anyone who did, he wasn’t tested for coronavirus until March 9. On March

14, the results came back positive. It is not known if Knox came in contact with someone who had the disease before or after entering the hospital. Knox’s battle was an uphill one from the start. He was also battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and reduced lung function from breathing in the air around Ground Zero after 9/11, according to the NY Post. Knox was sedated and on a ventilator. His family was hopeful for Knox to be given an experimental drug, but it was determined that he was not a candidate due to acute kidney failure. John Knox died on March 16, 19 days after he was hospitalized. Uniformed Firefighters Association President Gerald Fitzgerald responded to the news saying, “Our sympathies and prayers go out to the Knox family during this especially difficult time, following
the tragic loss of their beloved husband, father, and grandfather. John was a proud Fire Marshal Representative in the Uniformed Firefighters Association and served this department and his fellow Fire Marshals for many years. We are thankful for the memories and are grateful for his service to this City and this Union.” Mount Sinai officials released a statement saying, “The patient—who had not traveled to any high-risk countries or been exposed to someone with symptoms of COVID-19—was admitted to the hospital on February 26 and did not meet the CDC criteria in place at the time for COVID-19 testing. He did have an underlying chronic health condition as well as new symptoms. He later was diagnosed with COVID-19.” Several of Knox’s family members are in self-quarantine as a precaution due to possible exposure of coronavirus.

Far and away, the very first thing people must do when dealing with this new viral strain is stop, take a deep breath, and calm down. This is not the black plague that killed off half of Europe in the Middle Ages, or the 1918 “Spanish” flu that killed an estimated 20 million worldwide. Most people who catch this virus, if they get any symptoms at all, will have a fever, cough, or a sore throat for a few days and will fully recover. This mutation originated in China last November but was not recognized as a new strain there until late December. Worldwide, most of the fatalities have been in China and recently, Italy. Italy has a large Chinese population and, unlike the U.S., did not stop flights from China filled with people returning from celebrating Chinese New Year early enough. At present, many medical experts here believe that it will prove to be about as
virulent as, or slightly more virulent than, the flu. The people most at risk from this virus are those with weakened immune systems and/ or chronic lung and kidney problems. Since as we age, our immune system becomes naturally weaker, those aged 6570 and above, are at increased risk. So are people with diabetes, especially if poorly controlled, people on anti-rejection medications after organ transplantation, and people on long-term steroids (i.e. to treat rheumatoid arthritis, etc.). Also, those with severe kidney disease, especially if they are on dialysis, are at higher risk as are those with chronic lung diseases like emphysema and chronic bronchitis, particularly if they still smoke. A word about testing for the virus. There is currently no direct treatment for it. Do not confuse testing with treatment. The current recommendations by the CDC and DOH for testing is that a test should be

The U.S. health care system has a fixed capacity, so a flatter curve ensures that the demand for health care does not exceed its supply. PANDEMIC vs. EPIDEMIC. A pandemic is used to describe a disease that has spread across many countries and affects a large number of people. An epidemic is a rise in the number of cases of a disease beyond what is normally expected in a geographical area. SHELTER IN PLACE. Residents are directed to remain indoors except for essential travel. As of press time, New York has not put this measure into effect.

A positive test does not mean that the person is infected, only that the virus is present in their body and that they are presumed to be infected. Someone with symptoms and a positive test will be told to stay home until five days after symptoms subside. If you have a fever, cough, or sore throat, and you are not in the high-risk category, do not go to an ER, urgent care, or doctor’s office. At present, the virus is widespread, so the authorities are no longer looking for a source of infection. Anyone with a fever, cough, or sore throat is
now presumed to have the virus. Stay home and call your doctor who might prescribe an anti-flu medication as we are still in flu season. Finally, how long will this last? Last week the governor said up to nine months. That is unlikely. While no one knows for sure, experts believe it will last another one to three months. Already, China is seeing a drastic drop in the number of cases, and the same thing is likely to occur here. The number of new cases in all epidemic viral infections follows a bell-shaped curve. China is well into the downslope, and hopefully we will soon be there also. Remember to wash your hands and/or use an alcohol-based hand disinfectant often, especially after touching surfaces in public areas. “Social distancing” is a good idea and a good way to stay safe and disease free—just do it. Cancel any meeting or appointment you have unless it is urgent and stay home.

Lifelong Friendships in Rockaway JOY AND NATALIE By Kami-Leigh Agard
There’s a saying: “Everyone has a best friend during each stage of life—only a precious few have the same one,” and Rockaway girls, Joy Korman and Natalie Cammerino, are certainly blessed to be amongst those precious few. In the summer of 1972, Korman and Cammerino met on the Dayton Towers playground, and for 48 years strong, their friendship is still as strong and resilient as the Rockaway oceanside community they were raised in. Korman was born in Brooklyn but moved to Rockaway when she was seven years old. Cammerino was born in St. John’s Hospital. Her parents moved to Dayton Towers Building One (now called 8600) when it was first built in 1964. How they met is a bit of a painful story. Cammerino shared, “I remember one day that summer playing in Building One’s playground. In those days, kids spent most of their time outside, where you just roamed all day. Our playground had these barrels. They were made of cement and roundshaped, where you could either go through or over them. I saw Joy for the first time and helped her go over them, but she fell and busted her chin. So I had to take her home, and that’s when I introduced myself to her parents and tell them what happened.” Korman laughed, “Natalie and I bonded from that very first day, and well, look at where we are today—still sisterly best friends there for each other.” After that eventful day, the two became inseparable. “Natalie was like my extra sister. She would come to my house almost every day after school, and on Saturday mornings after our mothers made us clean our rooms, she would come over and we would eat pizza and watch Fat Albert on the television. It was a fun time growing up together,” Korman said. The two both attended P.S. 183, J.H.S. 180 and graduated together from Beach Channel High School in 1983. Though best friends and each other’s defender, the two ladies admitted they were also a bit
competitive with each other. Korman said, “Natalie was always very smart, and I was also a good student. However, like sisters, we were a bit competitive even after we graduated high school and were young women working in the city. For example, we created this game, where we would come up with a word, such as supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, and see who could create the most words out of the letters. Then we would fax over to each other what we came up with to make sure the other wasn’t cheating by having the same word twice. Those were fun times.” What the two ladies also share is their passion to help others. Cammerino said, “Joy and I are an inspiration to each other. When we graduated from P.S. 183, the tradition in those days was to have an autograph book, in which all your friends would sign. There was a girl in our grade who couldn’t afford one, so Joy and I chipped in five dollars each to buy the book for the girl. At ten years old, five dollars was a lot of money, but we were both determined to gift our classmate an autograph book.” And even today, the two ladies’ passion to humbly pay it forward to others has not waned. Cammerino and her husband volunteer with nonprofit, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, where they mentor a young boy. Korman volunteers with the Fresh Air Fund in which she and her husband host a little girl from a low-income family during the summer vacation. Korman said, “Natalie and I grew up not underprivileged, but

we didn’t have a lot, and by nature, we are both very giving, and it feels good to pay it forward if you can.” “Just to show how giving Joy is, when her father needed a kidney, she donated hers to him without hesitation,” Cammerino said. As for what makes their friendship so strong 48 years later, even when life’s circumstances change and turbulent storms hit, Korman and Cammerino unanimously said—their Rockaway roots. “Growing up in Rockaway in the ‘70s was just a much simpler time. There was no bullying and social media. In between Buildings Two and Three, there was this huge boiler room, and the girls and boys would play stickball, kickball, tag, pickle, ringolevio, all these 1970s games. As teenagers, you couldn’t get us out of the paddle board courts. We had bonfires on the beach. I remember swimming in the ocean at night. Who gets to do those things? Kids in Brooklyn and Bronx didn’t have that. We were such a small community, in which everyone knew each other. Even in the summertime when outsiders visited, in the winter and fall it was just us again. “When you’re little, you want a best friend. It’s like having a sister. Even when we were in my dad’s car sitting in the back, we would stretch the seatbelt, so we could be buckled in together. My grandparents would take us to Playland when we were little.
We’re both Jewish, so maybe this was another connection, though we didn’t think about that back then,” Korman said. As Cammerino stated, the definition of a best friend when you’re seven is different than when you’re in your 20s, 30s and 40s. The two ladies were bridesmaids at each other’s weddings and witnessed each other’s new roles as mothers. Korman flew down to Florida when Cammerino’s father passed away in 2014. “I missed the service, but I was there for her, and when my dad passed away in 2017, Natalie was there. Life is not all happiness, rainbows and butterflies—but we always get past it,” Korman said. Both ladies will turn 55 years this year, and their friendship is still strong—Rockaway strong. “To keep a friendship as long as ours takes a lot of work and commitment,” Cammerino said. “As you get older, it’s easier to drift away, but we didn’t. You have to be invested in the relationship to keep it going. At any moment in time, you could say, ‘You know what? It’s too hard to stay in touch,’ but with Joy and I, we just keep going, and I think it’s our foundation in Rockaway that keeps us close and besties forever.”

Takeout, and Delivery— How Rockaway’s Food Establishments Are Handling Coronavirus THEY NEED YOUR SUPPORT! By Kami-Leigh Agard
Many Rockaway businesses, especially restaurants and watering holes, wait out the slow winter season in hopes of making serious money in the summer. However, the community of restauranteurs received a staggering blow when it was announced this past Monday, that due to the coronavirus pandemic and the need for social distancing, Governor Cuomo mandated that they had to shut down to anything but take-out and delivery business. The upside is that restaurants with liquor licenses that decide to remain open can not just only sell food, but also your favorite wine, beer and liquor for takeout/ delivery. However, the one caveat is according to the State Liquor Authority (SLA), restaurants and bars cannot sell alcohol on its own, leaving out cocktail or wine bars that planned to sell bottles
without food. Alcohol delivery also comes with rules that will require logistical changes. Any car delivering the booze—whether from a third-party service or from the business’s own employees— must have a copy of the liquor license. Rockaway is the epicenter for foodies, both near and far, so The Rockaway Times reached to local business to see how they were are coping to keep open. Harbor Light finally re-opened its doors in October 2019, after years of reconstruction from Hurricane Sandy and fighting with the city for the necessary permits to open. Now the coronavirus has swept through like another hurricane, but Harbor Light’s owner, Sean Heeran, is still looking towards the light for hope. “We are still figuring this whole new reality out, but we are going to remain open. At the end of the day, we have a lot of employees, especially the kitchen staff who
need their jobs. We have a lot of people whose livelihood depends on us being open. As far as the waitering and bartending staff, a lot of them are part-time, and they have other jobs. However, when it comes to the kitchen staff, this is their full-time job, and that’s my major concern as I want to keep them working. So whatever it takes to keep them working, we are going to do our best. We just want folks to come out and support the local restaurants by ordering takeout or delivery. This keeps our kitchen staff employed, which is good for everybody. This is a tough situation, but everyone will get through it. I know there are a lot of places with worse problems than us, so we’re hanging in there—literally,” Heeran said. Ryan, swung open the doors to their popular barbecue spot on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, RBQ, in July 2018. Since opening, every weekend—winter, summer, spring and fall—RBQ is jam packed with people flooding in, not just for the delish food and drinks, but live music. John Moroney said the new state mandate for just takeout and delivery is crushing, but he’s keeping strong, despite the uncertainty looming ahead for the especially precious summer season. “We just want to keep some of the staff on so we can keep them employed and working. It’s tough, especially for waitresses and bartenders because it’s a total lockdown. There’s not too much we can do about it. No doubt about it, it’s an economic hit across the board for everybody. Your rent does not go away, your lights and other utilities don’t go away, the governmental taxes and fees don’t go away. This is also going to have a trickle-down effect to other businesses and their employees who provide services to us, and even students looking for summer jobs. It’s a scary thing, especially as we are not certain about the time frame. If this extends into the summer, this is going to crush all local businesses that keep afloat all year for the warmer months. I pray to God it won’t, but if it doesn't, it’s going to be pretty brutal. However, I understand that they are trying to keep people separated to contain

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Yesterday marked day four my daughter has been home from school. Each morning as I gaze at her giggly face, I wonder if she is aware of the pandemic that has blindsided the entire world. Life as we know it, feels as if someone hit you in the head from behind with no warning. However, for my daughter, she seems oblivious to the pandemonium outside, and just happily content in her cocoon of being surrounded by family 24 hours a day. Without the structure of school, I worry that all the milestones she’s made in the past six months will regress. To keep up with the stringently recommended social distancing, I am reluctant to allow her direct support professionals who provide respite care and community habil-

Coping In The New Normal itation to come to our home, especially since we live with my 84-year-old grandmother. I worry about when she goes out with her dad if she’s touched anything contaminated or brushed against people who may or may not have the virus. (As one local poignantly stated, “We all probably already have it.”). However, though life currently seems absurd, there’s no reason to stay suspended from acting on what’s needed to cope and still thrive in this new normal. Our children need us more than ever to be creative with setting routines that will help them to still developmentally flourish, while reducing anxiety and meltdowns. My daughter is nonverbal, so she needs more visual stimuli in terms of setting a routine. For example, I read a post from a mom who set a daily schedule illustrated on a board: one exercise activity, one house-
hold chore, one joint cooking activity, one shared leisure activity, and then there is of course, meal time, bath time, and a few hours of screen time as a reward. For children who are experiencing anxiety, I cited the following in a recent Washington Post article (“Helping autistic kids cope with the chaos and uncertainty of coronavirus”): Create a social story to explain parts of a day that may be unstructured. Use games of chance or improvisation to practice outcomes that aren’t predictable. From anxiety management, it’s exposure. It’s reducing that stress response when the unexpected happens. Also, to keep mentally healthy and connected, though social distancing is recommended, it does not mean that we have to socially isolate. Let your child connect with their school mates with a phone call or a supervised video chat. Connecting with
our friends and loved ones, whether by high tech means or through simple phone calls, can help us maintain ties during stressful days ahead and will give us strength to weather this difficult passage. Camus offers us a telling narrative that even when life seems to be dissolving right before our eyes, we have to keep fighting, hoping and loving—because folks, this too shall pass. Women have used powders for genital hygiene for decades to absorb odors and moisture. While rates of powder use in the genital area have declined over the past 50 years, it remains a routine practice for some women. Commonly used products typically include talc, cornstarch, or a combination of both. Investigations into an association between the use of talc-containing powders for genital hygiene and ovarian cancer have revealed mixed results. Recent high-profile litigation and media coverage of the risk of ovarian cancer among users of talc products prompted the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to conduct a large study to determine whether a link between the two actually exists. The results of that study were published early this year. Talc, like asbestos, is a soft

All U.S.-based manufacturers of cosmetic talc agreed to ban asbestos from their products in 1976, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer has since concluded that there is only â&#x20AC;&#x153;possibleâ&#x20AC;? evidence that genital use of talc powders may be carcinogenic. The theory is that when applied to a womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s genital area, talc may enter the vagina and be transported through the uterus and fallopian tubes to the ovaries where it causes an inflammatory reaction, which eventually causes cancer. The NIEHS study collected data from four large cohort studies, namely the Nursesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Health Study, the Nursesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Health Study II, the Sister Study, and the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Health Initiative Observational Study. In all, there were more than

250,000 participants. It divided participants into two groups: never users and ever users (ever users being those who reported using talc powder at least once). Ever users were then subdivided into longterm users, infrequent users, and past users. Participants were asked to define their use of talc going back more than 20 years. Additional data was collected, including age, race, education history, body-mass index, parity (number of pregnancies and births), smoking history, oral contraceptive use, hormone therapy use, tubal ligation and gynecologic surgery history, and menopausal status. In this large U.S. study, there were no statistically significant association between self-reported use of powder in the genital area and ovarian cancer. There was also no clear dose-response trends for duration and frequency of powder use in the genital area and
ovarian cancer risk. This is the first major U.S. study to clearly show no association between talc powder use and ovarian cancer. As previously noted, the theory was that talc causes inflammation which leads to cancer. This is based on the known fact that pelvic inflammatory disease (serious gynecologic infection) and chlamydial infections cause inflammation that increases the risk of ovarian cancer, while the use of aspirin, which reduces inflammation, reduces the risk of ovarian cancer. The authors concluded that prior studies that showed a possible link between talc and ovarian cancer may have been tainted by recall bias (participants either over or underestimated their use of talc products), making the study results inaccurate or unreliable. Shirley Chisholm for President By Lou Pastina
The coronavirus got you down? Sick of watching Netflix? Why not get out of the house? Try the newest state part in the city: Shirley Chisholm State Park. Where is it, what is it, why is it? Glad you asked, let’s start with Shirley, some may not remember her, but she is surely worth remembering. Shirley Chisholm was a Brooklyn-born-and-bred trailblazer who was the first African-American Congresswoman and the first woman and African-American to run for President! Now some may say that Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for President way back in 1872. She was the leader of the suffrage movement back when women did not have the right to vote. But there is a contention here since she couldn’t vote at the time and it was considered illegal for her to run for President. The times have changed for the better! Shirley went to Girls' High
School and Brooklyn College, and served seven terms in Congress and was a tireless public servant representing inner city constituents, who up to that point had no voice. In 1972, she ran for President. Although she didn’t do very well, she won 28 delegates, which I think is more than Bloomberg got for his couple of hundred million dollars. Her campaign slogan was, “unbought and unbossed.” She didn’t care that she was a woman or black, her focus was helping people. When she left Congress, she pursued a life teaching. Some may think that Hillary Clinton was the first woman to run for President, but Shirley had laid the path decades before. In recognition of her achievements and service, Governor Cuomo named the newest state park after her right here in New York. So where is it? If you take the Belt Parkway either from Crossbay or Marine Park, you get off at Pennsylvania Avenue in Brooklyn, a short 25-minute ride from Rockaway.
The park is built upon the old landfill that has been rising for decades before it started its conversion to park land. It comprises over 400 acres, has 10 miles of biking and hiking trails and rises to almost 130 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest elevations in all of New York City. From the top you can see the Atlantic Highlands, the Verrazano Bridge, all of Manhattan and all of Rockaway. In a word, the views are spectacular! You can bring your own bike or rent one when you are there. If you are a biker who does the loop between the two bridges, it is at the halfway point and worth a stop off. The state planted over 35,000 trees and the variety is startling. There are birds all over the place, every manner of duck, even those crazy Buffleheads that are black and white and go diving. I took Red Tail Trail and on cue, a red hawk appeared overhead. The park opens at 9 a.m. and is open 365 days a year. I got there at 10 a.m. this past weekend and had the park entirely to myself. There are signs
Page 27 alerting visitors to potential ticks, but I refrained from rolling around in the grass. Hell, I’m trying not to get the virus, now I had to worry about ticks! There are actually two parts to the park, one side is by the Pennsylvania Ave entrance and that side has a pier that allows fishing. Along the Fresh Creek side, is a kayak program that is planned with free rentals. If you take the bridge east, you come to the Fountain Bike Connector which takes you to the second part, and larger part of the park. Here, the hills are steeper, so be prepared. This part of the park is bordered by Hendrix Creek and Old Mill Creek. When I gazed down at the water, I was amazed at how clean it was. I could see down maybe 10 feet clearly, and Hendrix Creek had several large fish (stripped bass, maybe?) just hanging out under the bridge. Yes, it is landfill, which means that technically you are on top of a huge garbage heap, but wow what a heap! If you need to get out during the quarantine, Shirley you couldn’t go wrong here.

Wednesday, April 15 is Tax Day. Taxpayers should be vigilant of common IRS impersonation scams frequently targeting the elderly, students, and immigrants that escalate this time of year. In IRS agent phone scams, fraudsters provide false names and badge numbers and spoof Caller ID, so their calls appear to come from the IRS. Victims are threatened that they owe the IRS money and must pay the caller promptly. In one variation, a fake “IRS agent” tells the victim she owes delinquent taxes, and demands immediate payment by prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer. The “agent” threatens that nonpayment will result in arrest, deportation, fines, or license suspension. In another variation, a scammer tells the victim he can obtain a tax refund for her and requests banking and other personal information. He then uses this info to

Common IRS-Themed Scams Escalate During Tax Season commit identity theft. Sometimes the fraudster files for the victim’s refund but routes it to a fraudulent account. The “fake student tax” scam targets students and involves impersonators demanding payment for a fabricated “Federal Student Tax.” If the victim does not agree to pay, the impersonator threatens he will report her to the police. Scammers even call attempting to “verify” tax return information to get victims’ personal information. Phishing scams involve fake IRS emails. Using the IRS name, logo, fake employee names and badge numbers, scammers steal taxpayers’ money and identities. Some emails link to authentic-looking sham websites through which scammers entice victims to provide personal information. Recently the IRS warned taxpayers about fake emails regarding refunds, returns or tax accounts. The emails contain a "temporary password" or "one-time pass-
word" to "access" relevant files. But these files are malicious; when a taxpayer accesses them, his/her computer is infected with malware. The imposter gains control of the computer or secretly downloads keylogger software that tracks keystrokes and, eventually, passwords to sensitive accounts including financial ones. The IRS advises that it will never: • Call about delinquent taxes or to demand payment without having mailed a bill first; Initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media about a bill or refund or to request personal or financial information; Threaten to call law enforcement immediately to arrest you; Demand that you pay tax without providing the opportunity to question or appeal the amount it claims you owe; Require you to use a specific payment method, like a prepaid debit card; Request
credit or debit card numbers by phone. If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS asking for money, the IRS advises that you should not give out any information and should hang up immediately. Report the call to the Treasury Inspector General through https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/ contact_report_scam.shtml or by calling 800-366-4484. Report the scam to the FTC through FTC.gov by filing a consumer complaint. If you think you might owe tax or need tax assistance, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. If you get a phishing email, don’t reply or provide any information. Forward the email to phishing@irs.gov and then delete it. Don’t open attachments or click on links. Impersonation schemes continue to top the IRS' Dirty Dozen list of scams. Stay alert. Scams can occur any time of year, not just at tax time.

Women in Business Luv Cleaning LLC By Marina Cregan
As Women’s History month continues, this week, The Rockaway Times would like to showcase another local woman, Luvinia Monge, who created her own business, Luv Cleaning. There’s no doubt that Monge loves cleaning. In fact, she loves it so much that she turned it into a living. In 2015, she started off cleaning as a part-time gig, but with high demand, Monge was able to turn it into a full-time business, serving locals throughout the peninsula with Luv Cleaning. Back in 2015, Monge began working with owner of Rockaway Properties, Lisa Jackson, who gave her the opportunity to show what she can do, as well as showing her how to properly stage a house for viewing. Monge soon began cleaning and staging houses for sellers and buyers. This allowed her to introduce herself to other business owners such as cabinet makers, floor insulators, construction workers, granite/tile distributors, and others. Upon meeting all of these different business owners in multiple industries, it gave her the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about operating a clean home. “The reason I chose a cleaning business was, believe it or not, because I enjoy meeting people, talking with them
and providing a clean looking/smelling home for them,” Monge said. As a single parent of four young and energetic children, Monge wanted a position that gave her the flexibility to be available for them. And because her love and passion is to clean, she figured this business would be the perfect opportunity to be able to do both. With the help of childhood friend and owner of NurtureU Wellness, Samantha Cintron, Monge was introduced to the Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA), which was extremely supportive in helping her promote Luv Cleaning. Additionally, Monge says those from Cuisine by Claudette were helpful in introducing her to other business owners throughout Rockaway. The support from fellow business owners was invaluable. “They support those in the community. There is no community like it, and I am so blessed to be a part of it,” Monge said. As the business continues to grow over the years, Monge says she has been blessed with the best clients. The business’ clients range from those who for one
reason or another are unable to keep up with the maintenance of their homes themselves, such as parents who are too busy with work, children’s sports schedules, etc. Even if the cleaning is just a small part, Monge said, “We constantly hear how getting that task taken care of makes a huge impact in their lives. So many clients have said that Luv Cleaning has made a huge difference in their lives.” Since its start, Luv Cleaning’s motto has always been to treat each home as if it was their own, and that still stands today. Currently, Luv Cleaning’s standard hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Luv Cleaning is committed to servicing local residents. Since 2015, Monge’s business has expanded their clientele to the
entire peninsula, helping residents from Rockaway to Breezy Point and Broad Channel, keep their homes clean. Due to the business’ success, Monge has been able to hire a few employees, so the business is able to keep up with the demand of cleaning multiple homes a day. “My staff and I take pride in the services we provide,” Monge said. In just five years, Monge was able to turn her part-time cleaning service into a fulltime business opportunity, and considers herself truly blessed to be a part of this community that supports local business owners so much. Stay At Home Dad
Needless to say, the talk around the house has been centered on the Coronavirus. Yes, the apocalypse is upon us, but instead of anarchy and zombies, we are being forced to deal with being stuck at home with our children who are prohibited
from attending school and a shortage of toilet paper. As a father, I have found it difficult to explain to my daughters how a guy eating bat soup in Wuhan, China led to a toilet paper shortage in the United States. I did however point out one salient fact to them in that if you really think you need 150 rolls of toilet paper for a 14day quarantine, you probably should have been seeing a doctor long before the virus made an appearance. Worse yet, I am being continually reminded that with my approaching 70th anniversary of life on this Earth, I am among that group of "senior" citizens designated "at risk" for the virus. They have basically forbidden me from leaving the house, lest I chance upon being infected with the dastardly illness. I tell them that I have a secret to staying healthy during this crisis. is strictly follow the instructions of the back of a good old aspirin bottle, "Take two and keep away from children." Works every time! Truth be told, the real worry among my clan is that if I test positive for the virus, all of us would be confined together for two weeks. I asked my beloved Grace (aka: she who must be obeyed), "How bad could a couple weeks stuck in isolation with our family be?" She looked at me with a look of horror on her face and tears in her eyes and replied, "Have you never seen The Shining with Jack Nicholson?" On a happier note, with all the self-quarantines going on, there is bound to be another baby boom. Suffice it to say that in about 13 years from now, we will see then end of Generation Z and the rise of the "Quaranteens"! On a personal note, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;twas a sad day indeed to have to
spend St. Patrick's Day without the benefit of the grand parade down 5th Avenue. Adding insult to injury, the pain of the absence of the parade is only made worse due to the fact that we can't visit any of our local watering holes to cry in our beers because, in addition to canceling the parade, all the damn pubs have been closed. I was over in Rockaway on the morning of St. Patrick's Day and observed that the Liquor Wine Warehouse adjacent to Stop and Shop was doing a booming business. I spotted one young woman exiting the store on the way to her car in the parking lot with a shopping cart brimming with wine bottles and I casually remarked, "Bad enough all the toilet paper is gone, I hope you're not hoarding all the wine!" Queens Borough President Election Put on Pause By Marina Cregan
The special election for Queens Borough President (QBP) scheduled for March 24, has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. On Sunday, March 15, just one day after early voting began, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the special election will be postponed until further notice. Currently, there is no set date for when the election will take place. Due to the city’s uncertainty, the action taken by de Blasio raises additional questions and concerns about whether NY will even move ahead with the presidential primary election scheduled for April 28. After de Blasio announced the postponement of the special election, acting QBP Sharon Lee, assured the people of Queens that she continues to

stand behind her commitment to represent and serve them for as long as necessary. Lee stated, “The Queens Borough President’s Office remains open and fully committed to serving the constituents of Queens.” She also supported the mayor’s decision to suspend the special election, stating, “The decision to suspend an election is extraordinary, but warranted given the urgency and magnitude of the situation.”
The candidates registered for the race also supported the Mayor’s decision. Almost immediately after de Blasio’s announcement, Candidate Donovan Richards tweeted, “Thank you @NYCMayor for recognizing the importance of protecting poll workers and voters in Queens. We should never put politics ahead of the health and safety of our most vulnerable.” Candidate Costa Constantinides also agreed with the decision and said, “The health, safety, and stability of Queens is most important. While we’re grateful to everyone who came out to vote early this weekend, we respect the Mayor’s decision to suspend the election. I know my colleagues and I will continue to put the well-being of Queens residents first in these challenging weeks ahead. This is a time when we all need to come together.”
Candidate Elizabeth Crowley also expressed the importance of public safety, stating, “The health and safety of our city and citizens is paramount. We must now come together to protect ourselves and our great city. Our politics will see another day.” Although it is difficult to make a decision such as this, Candidate Jim Quinn expressed that he understands de Blasio’s decision, stating, “It is the number one job of government to keep people safe and as someone who dedicated my life to the safety of Queens residents, we must all come together to do what is necessary to get through this public health crisis.” Prior to the decision, candidate Anthony Miranda also expressed a desire to postpone the election, but as we go to press, he has not made a statement in response to the postponement.
