Here’s The Culprit The utility pole at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive, outside Lana’s Loft, proved vulnerable to high winds last Thursday and looked ready to fall or snap when locals called 911 at around 12:45 p.m. The FDNY responded quickly and moved to close traffic in both directions. And then more than eight hours of traffic tieups began. The only east-west corridor open between Beach 116th and Beach 108th was Rockaway Beach Boulevard, which only has one lane in each direction along that stretch. As traffic built up and the utility pole continued to hang precariously over Beach Channel Drive, a PSEG emergency crew showed up around 4:15 p.m., more than three hours after FDNY said they were first contacted. As schools emptied and rush hour arrived, traffic got worse. Further complicating the traffic flow was the “left only” lanes at Beach 108th. Although two lanes in each direction become available at this juncture, many

drivers were lining up in one lane only. They were obeying traffic signs but surely keeping traffic snarled. Reports of police management of the problem was mixed. Some drivers said it took more than one hour to travel a half mile. Other drivers were innovative. Heading west, they turned into the backside of the Stop And Shop parking lot, went through the parking lot, turned onto the sidewalk outside the post office and into the post office parking lot. They came out the other side, onto the sidewalk again and into the BP gas station, then past the car wash and farmer’s market and then onto Newport Avenue heading west. PSEG did not fully install a new pole until Friday morning. The Rockaway Times posted the news of the leaning pole and snarled traffic on social media and many commenters expressed their concern about evacuation routes and Rockaway overcrowding.

RTC's Jesus Christ Superstar Preview Thrills! By Kami-Leigh Agard

On Ash Wednesday, February 26, The Rockaway Times and other lucky guests were invited to get a sneak peak of the Rockaway Theatre Company’s (RTC) production of the iconic 1970 rock opera, “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Though this was just a concert preview, the ensemble of vocals didn’t just raise the roof and enthrall the audience, the raw energy and talent exhibited on the stage transported onlookers from the RTC’s theater in Fort Tilden to Broadway. This rock/musical-theater hybrid gives truth to the wisdom that live performance is meant to be experienced, not just observed, and RTC’s score that bursts with life under the direction of musical director, Jeffrey Arsberger, provides a rich tapestry for the powerhouse of performers who wow you, not with just with their vocal range, but thirst to deliver a message. As Jesus’ betrayer, Judas,

Erech Holder-Hetmeyer’s soulful performance, vocal depth and body movements conjure up James Brown on the stage, immediately making him a standout as the modern day “Godfather of Soul.” Also, the depth of Holder-Hetmeyer’s enigmatic presence gives a righteous nod to actor, Chadwick Boseman, known for his portrayals of real-life historical figures, Jackie Robinson in “42,” James Brown in “Get on Up,” Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall,” and as superhero, Black Panther. Carly McClain as Mary Mag-

dalene interjects a sweet presence with her performance of “I Don’t Know How To Love Him.” Eric Kramer as the high priest, Caiaphas, will make you sit up, not just by his vocal artistry, but vehement passion in the role. The solos performed were breathtaking, but to listen to the entire ensemble in unison blows you away. How director and choreographer, Gabrielle Mangano, found and majestically orchestrated this motley crew of performers, who range in ages, races, stature and experience is nothing short of amazing. At times the ensemble seems to be in turmoil at odds with their passion for Christ and his ordained fate. A testimony to society’s ambiguous crowd mentality—from adoring to mocking to crucifying—that demands you bear witness.

"Jesus Christ Superstar" spawned a 1970 album that birthed a new age in musical theatre, and just from the preview last Wednesday, RTC’s production does just that under the careful stewardship of Mangano. If this was just a preview, just imagine what the full production will resurrect. RTC’s mission is "Bringing Broadway to Rockaway," and with their production of "Jesus Christ Superstar," they achieve just that. Raising the bar for community theater and its unlimited possibilities. For those of you who observe the Lenten season, if there is one indulgence you can’t resist, seeing this production is it. Show dates for the Rockaway Theatre Company’s Jesus Christ Superstar are March 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 and April 3, 4, 5. Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are adults $20/ seniors $15. For tickets and more info, visit: rockawaytheatrecompany.org.

BOYLEING POINTS

Irish Stew I’m not arguing, I’m simply explaining why I’m right. Now, see, there’s a thing I might wear on a t-shirt this weekend but, Holy St. Patrick, you won’t be catching me in anything that says, "Kiss Me, I'm Irish." The problem with that slogan, is some people do. God forbid. You know I can’t resist dropping a proverb on you that was dropped on me: “If wars were fought with words, Ireland would rule the world.” Of course, there are a couple of variations on what’s keeping Ireland from ruling the world but it’s hard to argue that it rules a good chunk of Rockaway this week, including this column. I’m guessing a lot of people who live in New Orleans hate Mardi Gras. They can do without the crowds and the madness. I’m guessing a few feel the same way about Parade Day in Rockaway. But New Orleans without Mardi Gras, Rockaway without St. Paddy's—they just wouldn’t be the same. Among other things, the parade presents me with the chance to regurgitate some Irishisms. I get to say things are grand and brilliant and ask people, where’s the crack? (Ok, you picky sorts: It’s spelled craic.). No matter the spelling, they don’t point to a drug den or suggest rehab. Everyone knows that with Irish Alzheimer’s you forget everything but your grudges. And the grudges live on until you read the name of your nemesis in the Irish Comics otherwise known as the obituaries. (Sometimes people ask why we don’t publish obituaries. Well, I just get too sad when I lose another reader). You know, good Irish old-timers might express frustration by saying Jesus, Mary, and Joseph while the new, saltier, generation expresses it with: for feck’s sake. I can’t remember (see Irish Alzheimer’s) who told me this

THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 2020 one but I get a kick out of the cockiness. He said, any Irishman worth his salt, walks into the room, and convinces himself he’s either the smartest or funniest guy in the room. If he’s neither, he knows he’s the best looking. And if none of those fit he can still believe he’s got the best singing voice. Such cockiness or arrogance is actually kinda rare in Irishisms. The Irish are usually more comfortable putting themselves down or making light of tough circumstances. When you pack your clothes in a trash bag and call it Irish Luggage you’re not exactly boasting. There are Irish Twins (children born within a year of each other) and Irish Exits (you know, slipping out without saying goodbye). There are Irish Wakes and Irish Tempers. And there’s even Irish Camouflage—otherwise known as freckles. There are a few that can’t be said in church. And easier said after a pint. And while Irish-this and Irish-that are common enough, there are some words and sentiments that seem appropriate as the parade takes shape. Do not resent growing old, some are denied the privilege. Irish women are like tea bags, they don’t know their strength until they’re in hot water. A silent mouth is musical. It's often a man's mouth broke his nose. May good luck be your friend in whatever you do, And may trouble be always a stranger to you. May the lilt of Irish laughter lighten every load, May the mist of Irish magic shorten every road, May you taste the sweetest pleasures that fortune ere bestowed, And may all your friends remember, all the favors you are owed. All very nice. But I’ll end on some practical advice: Your kilt should be short enough for a jig and long enough to hide your lucky charms. (This column first ran in 2015. Here’s hoping it didn’t leave much of an impression and you forgot!)

Lifelong Friendships in Rockaway RHONDA AND BARBARA By Marina Cregan Wherever life takes you, the uniqueness of growing up in the Rockaway community always seems to remain. As Rhonda Feterman-Cronin said, “The memories and who we are will forever be colored by the hues of the sand and ocean, and the soothing roar of the waves. Unexpectedly, the friendship Feterman-Cronin formed in the third grade with, Barbara Dommermuth-Catlett, is just as strong as ever 50-plus years later. In the summer of 1964, Feterman-Cronin’s family moved to Beach 68th Street. She started school at P.S. 42, where she met her best friend, Barbara. The path of their journey continued through JHS 198, and Far Rockaway High School, where they proudly graduated together in

1974. Like any true Rockawayites, the two girls went to the beach as much as they could. Feterman-Cronin joked, “I even have all the freckles and sun spots to prove it! The girls spent their summer days soaking up the sun, singing, and writing stories. Feterman-Cronin said they would

bring a marble notebook to the beach, and each write stories which they modeled after the famous, "Archie Comics." They’d alternate who would start the story first, and pick up where the other left off, not leaving the beach until the whole notebook was complete. Even after all these years, she remembers all of

their stories always had the same premises—one good girl, one bad girl, and one nerdy guy. When reflecting on the stories the girls created, Feterman-Cronin joked, “Ask me what I had for breakfast today, and I couldn’t tell you. But these memories always seem to stick out in my brain. While the beach will always be the first spot Feterman-Cronin thinks of when speaking about how her friendship flourished with Dommermuth-Catlett, she also expressed how much they enjoyed going to the famous, Rockaway Playland. Because she grew up on Beach 68th, she remembers watching the fireworks at Playland, from her mother’s bedroom window as they lit up the sky every Continued on page 7

LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS IN ROCKAWAY Continued from Page 6

THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 2020 muth-Catlett brings their childhood memories back to life by hosting big barbecues, just like her Aunt Gladis did for them on those warm summer nights back on the peninsula. Feterman-Cronin said, “We share a history and an understanding that can only be likened to family.” Throughout it all, and even with lapses in communication, their bond remains unbreakable. Feterman-Cronin expressed how much fun the pair had, and how they could not have grown up in a better place. “I feel the beach calls back to me. I’m constantly begging people to bring me back to Rockaway in the summertime, because I really feel Rockaway in my soul.” There truly is something magical about growing up in Rockaway Beach, where childhood friendships certainly do last a lifetime.

Wednesday night. On the rare occasion when the girls weren’t together, they would insist on talking on their landlines, while simultaneously listening to their 45 tracks, specifically their all-time favorite, The Monkees. As their lives progressed, Feterman-Cronin moved to Forest Hills, Queens, and Dommermuth-Catlett moved to Richmond, Virginia in the late 1970s. However, their separation across different states didn’t stop them from keeping in touch. They wrote letters to each other, keeping their memories alive. When they both settled down and got married, the importance of their friendship remained, keeping both their families in touch. Feterman-Cronin visits Dommermuth-Catlett Have a long-time friendship almost every summer at her home in Virginia. Although or know someone we could they’re not in Rockaway any- write about? JETTIES MORE SAND COMING! All that is left is the official announcement. The Project Partnership Agreement for the Rockaway and Jamaica Bay Reformulation Project was signed by Colonel Thomas D. Asbery. The Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) will soon put out bids and is expecting to award a groin/jetty contract in late April. The winning contractor will have to submit plans and schedules and also work around the piping plover restrictions. For engineering purposes, the Army Corps prefers to start at Beach 149th Street and build east. Work could begin as early as late May. A total of nineteen groins (both new and reinforced) will be installed. Each groin can take 2-3 months to complete; therefore, the reformulation project will take several years

to complete. Officials have said that beach area closures would be relatively small and temporary. Sand replenishment is part of the plan and that is expected to occur in late 2021 (subject to possible severe storms and groin construction progress). Stay tuned for official announcement, construction schedules and other matters.

***** Have a wonderful Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day! Congratulations to all the honorees. And a big round of applause to those who organize (That’s you Mike Benn!) and march. ***** Been friends with anyone for fifty years or more? Or maybe mom and dad have longtime friends and they’d want to share their stories? Send an email to Editor@Rockawaytimes.com. ***** If you’re wondering where our award-winning editor, Katie McFadden, is in this week’s RT, we’re happy to say she’s on a well-deserved vacation, this week and next. We eagerly await her “spotted” Rockaway Times t-shirt photo from Antarctica. Some people go to Florida for the winter, not our

Katie. She’ll be hanging out with penguins at the bottom of the Earth. She won’t have to watch out for polar bears because—here’s a fact you probably don’t need: there are no polar bears in Antarctica and polar bears and penguins have never met (except in commercials and maybe zoos). Here’s to calm seas in the Drake Passage, Katie! (We’re seasick thinking about it). ***** Were you one of the ones stuck in that ridiculous traffic jam last Thursday? Some people told us it took an hour to drive from Beach 108th to Beach 118th Street. The whole mess was started by a utility pole outside Lana’s Loft on Beach Channel Drive which looked like it was going to topple over in the wind (which was gusty!). The FDNY responded right away at about 12:45 p.m. and closed both ways on Beach Channel Drive from Beach 116th to Beach 108th. PSEG didn’t arrive until 4:15. Once PSEG secured the pole, it seems police could have opened up

The Rockaway Times

the eastbound lane (or south side) and had both westbound and eastbound traffic using that side of Beach Channel. Instead, all traffic had to use Rockaway Beach Boulevard. And that’s where those “left turn” only lanes are—which also contributed to the mess. What if something like this happens in the summer? ***** The reports of his retirement were greatly exaggerated. It’s one that is not happening at all, at least not yet. Dr. Peter Galvin will be sticking around. His practice will remain open. He really was set to retire but he’s being brought back by popular demand, as they say. ***** Dr. John Curley, born and bred in Rockaway, will be retiring from his dental practice as of March 15. If he changes his mind, we’ll let you know in next week’s paper. ***** Community Board 14 has a new email address so if you want to get in touch, gripe,

praise, get info—please send email to QN14@CB.NYC.GOV ***** We’re just telling you what Senator Chuck Schumer’s office is telling us and what the Army Corps of Engineers is telling us. And we know seeing is believing. But it does look like the jetties/groins project will actually begin before summer. As for which beaches will be affected (i.e. closed) and when, that has yet to be determined. And the schedule is also affected by the piping plovers’ nesting season. ***** It’s a good weekend for Mark Healey. The Wave editor is marching in the parade as a Deputy Grand Marshal and Arcadia Publishing announced they will be publishing his book on baseball, Gotham Baseball, in April. ***** Congratulations to Father Richard J. Ahlemeyer, Pastor of St. Camillus – St. Virgilius Parish, he is being elevated to Monsignor by Pope Francis.

A Primer on the Coronavirus By Peter Galvin, MD

Human coronaviruses (HCoVs) are nothing new. Their existence has been known for decades and, until the 21st century, they were considered inconsequential pathogens, responsible for up to 30% of cases of the common cold. However, all this changed starting in 2002. Cases of severe atypical pneumonia were described in Guangdong Province in China. This new disease became known as severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. A beta-HCoV named SARS-CoV, was identified as the causative agent. Early cases shared a history of human-animal contact at live game markets in China, leading experts to suspect a zoonotic transmission, meaning animal to human transmission. While SARS caused a worldwide panic, similar to what is being seen today, few cases were identified outside of China and the panic finally

abated as the disease did. Once again, in December 2019, China identified another novel coronavirus, 2019-nCoV (aka COVID-19), which arose in the live game markets, this time in Wuhan. Mounting cases and deaths caused China to impose an unprecedented cordon sanitaire, meaning a guarded area where no one is allowed to leave. As of the end of February, China reported over 75,000 cases and 2,700 deaths. Cases are being reported in other countries, but with a few exceptions, all have been traceable back to China. The death rate at present is 3%, as opposed to 1% for most annual influenza, or flu, cases. Another pathogenic beta-CoV epidemic occurred in 2012 in Saudi Arabia. This virus, which made the species jump from animal to humans, again associated with live animal markets, was called Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS. Fortunately, MERS remained localized and

did not cause a panic. These mutated coronaviruses cause lower respiratory symptoms (lung infections like pneumonia), because the human receptor for the virus, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), is found primarily in the lungs, not the upper airway. That is why there are few upper respiratory symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, and dry cough. The virus heads directly for the lungs. As is seen with the flu, the very young, very old, and those with chronic illnesses are most susceptible. When dealing with 2019nCoV, it is important to keep things in perspective. The flu infects millions in this country every year, and on average it causes between 20-50,000 deaths every year. The flu is a much more existential threat to Americans than coronavirus. While it is important to take steps like closing the border and placing potentially ex-

posed persons in quarantine to protect American lives, 2019nCoV is very unlikely to cause anything like what we face from the flu every year. The wild panic being seen is certainly uncalled for and overreactive, to say the least. Finally, one must wonder how the usually tame coronavirus mutated on three separate occasions into a much more virulent viral strain. Two of the three known outbreaks originated in China, and China has one main microbiology and virology lab, which is located in Wuhan. Did the virus mutate naturally, or did it get help? We will probably never know.

Test Patterns

If you are of a certain age, you will remember that late at night network TV stations actually broadcasted a test pattern instead of a show. In those days there were three major networks, CBS, NBC and ABC, accompanied by some local stations on channels 5 and 11. Public television broadcasted on Channel 13. It was not unusual for families to gather around the black and white TV set and watch a popular show. It’s actually not that long ago. Today there is never a test pattern broadcast, because time is money and the TV is broadcasting 24/7. In addition to the original big three major networks, there are literally hundreds of stations available in multiple languages no less. And if that is not enough, streaming services

provide a huge amount of content, for additional fees, to fill your time. But still, with all that content available today, there are times when there is absolutely nothing on TV worth watching. I have a friend who cannot sleep, at all, and stays up watching some of the strangest shows ever. He is now an expert on Aliens Among Us, and is convinced that Antarctica is actually a landing zone for the alien space ships. He heard it on cable one night at three in the morning. In addition, he now knows more about Wicked Tunas who have seen Hitler’s Ghost in remote parts of the Pacific Ocean. Having watched the Mystery of Oak Island now for eight years, he is convinced that the mystery will soon be solved and revealed. But that would be a terrible thing, because then he would have to watch reruns knowing that the conspiracy theory was actually just a story made up by someone who was paid to write a story to fill dead time on TV.

Hope he doesn’t read this! Binging has made TV an unenjoyable process. No longer do you have to wait for the next episode, or spend a week discussing what happened and what you think will happen on the next episode with all your friends. Instead what happens is that you find a dark room, all alone with chips and multiple six packs of Coke and watch all 11 episodes of a show in one day that took a year to make. Having gone through the marathon of watching the entire series, you find that you can’t even discuss it because it takes too long to actually process what you just saw, and your eyes are too tired to

keep open, and must be rested for several days. And the really great news is, if you aren’t home to binge your favorite shows, no worries because you can watch them on your smart phone. Oh joy! I was recently at a concert and the performer asked the audience to put their smart phones up with the spotlight on. It was impressive, eighteen thousand lights immediately went up in the arena. When I was young and went to shows, we used to light a match and phones were nailed to a wall. But, rather than leave the house for a concert, especially in the age of the coronavirus, it’s probably safer to just stay home and pay a little extra to see the show on TV. I mean I can just as easily light up my phone in a darkened room, right? At Christmas time some smart marketing guy came up with the idea of having a continuous yule log burn as a TV show. It probably gets high ratings. Imagine what ratings a test pattern would get!

Broken

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Last month, my column was based on one of a series of articles written by Dr. Edward Hoffer, concerning America’s broken health care system. Today I would like to continue that by looking at other broken areas. For example, our current malpractice system does not well serve doctors or patients. Medical malpractice insurance is a substantial cost of operating a medical practice. A standard $1.3/3.9 million policy can run $30-40,000 a year for a family practitioner with no surgery to well over $150,000 for an obstetrician or neurosurgeon. Comparable policies in Canada run about $2000 a year. New York is one of the states with the highest rates. The at-fault litigation-oriented system in the U.S. results in long delays before patients are compensated for harm and too much money goes to lawyers, and litigation costs instead of to those who were injured or

harmed. Even cases that are closed with no payment made to any party generate costs averaging $36,000. This means that plaintiff attorneys are unwilling to take on cases that will likely result in low payments, even if the malpractice was clear-cut. In addition to its direct effect on costs, the at-fault system encourages doctors to practice “defensive medicine.” Doctors readily admit to ordering more tests than necessary out of a fear of being sued. The annual cost of this defensive medicine has been estimated to be between $56 and $162 billion. For example, researchers have found that in states with caps on malpractice payments, the rate of coronary angiograms for chest pain was 24% lower than in states with no caps. The adversarial system also discourages doctors and nurses from reporting adverse events, especially “near misses” from which the system might learn. All doctors make mistakes; we are human. Good doctors learn from their mistakes and share that learning.

Fraud and waste are other issues that drive up costs. Health care insurers are in business to make money. An entire industry has sprung up to help insurers make their enrollees appear sicker than they actually are. In 2017, a congressional auditor testified that more than $6 billion in extra payments were improperly made to Medicare Advantage plans because of inflated estimates of enrollees’ sicknesses. Also, many hospitals pressure doctors to pick a diagnosis for a discharged patient that generates a higher payment. This is called upcoding. Younger doctors order more tests and rely more on imaging studies, because they lack confidence in their physical examination skills. As an example of waste, many cardiology groups order an EKG on every patient every time the patient visits the office despite the fact that the American College of Cardiology guidelines recommend against such routine electrocardiograms. Lastly, in 2009, the Obama Administration attempted to

bribe doctors and hospitals to use electronic medical records (EMR) on the assumption that it would lead to better care and lower costs. Those not using EMR received lower Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. Unfortunately, the advent of EMR has had a number of negative effects. Doctors' offices with EMR have been able to get higher payments, or upcode, because the EMR is much longer than a paper record would be. Doctors with EMR spend more time on entering data and less time with the patient. One estimate of a 10-hour E.R. shift found that E.R. doctors made about 4000 clicks per shift. A 2018 Mayo Clinic survey found that the leading cause of physician dissatisfaction was the number of hours of data entry and box-checking they must complete. Will our elected representatives ever address these issues, or will lobbyists continue to run Congress? Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade Honorees By Marina Cregan

This Saturday, March 7, arguably the best day of the year for Rockaway locals, marks the 45th Annual Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This year, the parade staff is honoring ten people who are all actively involved in the community. The first honoree is Gael of the Year, Ed Wilkinson, who is now marking his 50th year as a staff member of the Brooklyn Diocese newspaper, The Tablet. Wilkinson served as the Editor-in-Chief from 1985 to 2018, and in 2018 he assumed the title, Editor Emeritus, working full time on special projects for The Tablet and DeSales Media. Throughout his career, Wilkinson has won several awards in the Catholic Press Association’s annual newspaper contest. While Wilkinson remains a contributor to The Tablet, he also can be seen on The NET’s Catholic TV Show, Currents. He has received numerous honors, including serving as Chief Brehon of Catholic Charities’ Great Irish Fair in the years 2000 and 2007, as well as serving as Grand Marshal of the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In 2014, Wilkinson was also honored at Brooklyn Borough Hall as Irishman of the Year. Wilkinson’s latest honor was in May 2018, where the Diocese of Brooklyn honored him with its St. Francis de Sales Distinguished Communicator Award at its observance of World Communications Day. Msgr. Richard Joseph Ahlemeyer from St. Camillus Catholic Church will also be honored in this year’s parade. Born in the old Rockaway Beach Hospital, Msgr. Ahlemeyer grew up in Broad Channel, and went to Catholic school all his life. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1976 by Bishop Francis Mugavero, and then ordained into the priesthood in 1977. Msgr. Ahlemeyer has served in numerous parishes/assignments over the years, and now happily resides as Monsignor

Gerard Fitzgerald

of St. Camillus Catholic Church in Rockaway Park. Msgr. Ahlemeyer is honored to be part of this year’s parade, exclaiming, “The Rockaway Parade Committee has enriched the Rockaway community with this annual celebration of Irish culture, tradition and, most importantly, Catholic faith.” Honorary Grand Marshal, Brian Glynn, hails from the small village of Ardrahan, County Galway in West Ireland. Growing up, Glynn’s parents made sure he was always giving a hand with any building projects and odd jobs that needed to be done, heavily influencing his work ethic today in his professional life since. In 2012, Glynn graduated from the Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT), with an Honors degree in Quantity Surveying. Moving to New York in 2013, he secured an estimating job for a construction company in Yonkers, and began playing Hurling and Gaelic football in Gaelic Park. Later that same year, he was chosen to play on the New York Hurling team, traveling back to Galway to participate in The Gathering International Hurling Tournament. Currently, Glynn plays Gaelic Football for Sligo New York and Hurling for Hoboken, NJ, where both teams won their Senior NY Championship in 2019. Glynn’s previous achievements include, Senior Hurling Championship in 2014, 2016, and 2018, as well Intermedi-

ate Football Championship in 2018 and 2019. Glynn says he could not have done this without his coaches, Mike Fulham and E.J. Burke. The next honoree, Deputy Grand Marshal, Irene Connolly Dougherty, is the proud daughter of Irish immigrants, which she credits her parents for raising her and her siblings with the perfect combination of Catholic guilt, civic responsibility, and Irish wit and ingenuity, saying she is incredibly thankful for their selfless sacrifices for their family. Dougherty has been an active participant in the Rockaway community for several years, where she has taught hundreds of children about their Catholic faith in her role as a teacher for the Office of Religious Education at SFDS for the past 14 years. Currently, she serves on the Executive Board as Co-President of the Scholars’ Academy Parent Association, as well as the School Leadership Team for the past seven years. Additionally, Dougherty is an active member of the Division 25 of the LAOH. Deputy Grand Marshal, John Paul Brennan, is another honoree who was born and raised in Rockaway Park. Growing up, Brennan was part of several youth organizations just as most Rockaway kids are. After graduating from Beach Channel High School in 2004, Brennan enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and graduated basic training in 2006. Throughout his time spent on active duty, Brennan was deployed numerous times to assist in natural disasters around the country. Brennan then served with the USCG, Sector NY Engineering Division, where he achieved the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. Currently, Brennan is serving as an engineering supervisor, where he provides training and experience in all forms of Facility and Naval engineering. Throughout his career, Brennan’s service has been recognized by be-

ing awarded numerous military awards. John continues to serve today with an acclimated time in service to our grateful nation for 14 years. Currently, he awaits promotion to Chief Petty Officer. Today, Brennan works as an Oceanside Fireman. Brennan’s hard work and dedication of service throughout his life are a great example for young professionals all over. Thomas Quinn, has worked in Queens Criminal and Supreme Court for over 20 years, and is also a delegate to SCOA and the Emerald Society. Quinn was awarded the Milton Mollen Commitment to Excellence Award, for recipients who have demonstrated professionalism, dedication and extraordinary service to their court. As an executive member of the Fraternal Order of Court Officers, Quinn works to meet the needs of officers and their families, as well as many other charities throughout the years. Quinn’s family has always been a vital part of his life. Due to the tragic passing of his youngest daughter, Mary, the Mary Quinn’s Mark Foundation was founded in her memory in 2016. With his involvement, the foundation funds inclusive classes for individuals and community-based activities. Quinn is committed to his family, friends, faith, and country. Deputy Grand Marshal, Terri Coyle, is the Vice President of Behavioral Health for St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. Beginning her career in the field working with children at risk of psychiatric admission, and their families in the Home-Based Crisis Intervention Program, Coyle has a long tenure at the hospital working with and advocating for adults, children, and families with behavioral health concerns. Working at the Community Mental Health Center at St. John’s, Coyle supervised the Project Liberty Program, which was designed to help commuContinued on page 35

29. I looked up the organization Black Veterans for Social Justice. It is the organization that provides, "private financial support" for the shelter, according to the article. It’s easy to get background on this organization and their financials. Why is private funding a bad thing? Why look to the public to fund this? Would it be bad if Bloomberg were funding it privately.? I think not. Also, ACS and public housing has not done such a good job protecting abused children or providing safe, clean and heated housing, not a great track record there. The entire article was one-sided. There are always two sides to every story. Were they asked why they came at 2 a.m. in the morning on a bus? Wouldn’t it be possible that the reason was that these men were in an overcrowded shelter and it was more humane to offer the housing with a certificate of occupancy which is legal and cheaper to transport them at night on a bus when they needed the night’s shelter

utes will be lost while directing cars. And in life or death situations, seconds count. The FDNY should reconsider this move now. Robert Simpson

There Are Two Sides Rethink Firehouse Move Dear Editor: Beach Channel Drive was closed last week for emergency repairs and Rockaway roads became a parking lot. Traffic was at a standstill on Newport Avenue from Beach 121st Street to Beach 116th Street. The same was true on Beach Channel Drive, all traffic going east was not moving. That is why moving the firehouse to the old HSBC Bank site could be a very serious problem. Fire trucks trying to exit will be met with cars unable to move out of the way. At the very least, min-

Dear Editor: The article, The Men Move In (2/27/20), of The Rockaway Times was startlingly one-sided. As a voting member of this community, I decided to go over and welcome the opening of the shelter and ask what they needed. It was quiet, no crazy people hanging outside, in fact no indication that anyone was there. I spoke briefly with the officers having their lunch in a parked car across from the shelter and asked them where it was. They didn’t know it was open, they said it had not opened yet. There were no additional problems since they didn’t know it was open as of February 21, and it’s now February

The Rockaway Times than to wait until the morning and leave them on a floor or outside somewhere and then transport them by car service, etc. What is the other side of the story, is everyone against the shelter? I think not. Ask others, ask the spiritual organizations, ask the veterans, just provide both sides of the story. I can and will financially and spiritually support this shelter. I personally work with special-needs infants and toddlers and people on the spectrum of autism. Eventually, they too will need shelter and housing. Will you say no to them, too? Shame on the not-in-mybackyard mentality and fear of people who are challenged. Genie Rogers

What will happen if I’m no longer here to take care of my child? What about disability benefits through the state, social security, special-needs trusts and wills, life insurance—these were just a few of the looming concerns voiced across the room at Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF) February monthly meeting. You could see the lines of worry deepen on caregivers’ faces, as many of them were unaware that regardless of their child’s age, setting up a financial plan is crucial to ensuring that their loved one is properly set up to enjoy the quality of life they deserve. However, parents— good news! With efficient financial planning, understanding government benefits, utilizing the right legal instruments, and most importantly, centering the plan around your child’s needs—the rainbow of financial security can lead to a pot of gold security. I reached out to Stuart Flaum, a financial planner at Special Needs Family Planning LLC and also himself a parent of a son with special-needs, to get answers. In the following Q&A, Flaum, who will be the guest speaker at RBAF’s next meeting on Thursday, March 19, offers a few nuggets of advice. KLA: What’s a common mistake parents make when starting the journey towards financial planning for their child? SF: Instead of planning from the morbid standpoint—“What happens when

I’m no longer here?”—parents should plan from where the hope is. My model, the way we work with families, is starting with the individual. For example, we ask if the parent has applied for Office for People With Developmental Disabilities’ (OPWDD) self-direction program or other services. The service system has robust benefits, not just financial benefits, but supports and services. For 50 years, professionals have asked parents, including you and me, do you have a will, do you have a trust or insurance? However, then parents go to bed worrying about the future, instead of focusing on the now. KLA: What about Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits? SF: SSI is really important, because it provides a floor for individuals who can’t engage in substantial gainful activity after age 18 or for those younger than 18 who live in a household in which the family’s economic situation meets the criteria. I want families to understand that income, whether it’s earned or from the federal government, social security, parents’ retirement—it’s still money. Another important consideration is for parents who take their social security retirement income after age 62. For example, my son will receive one half of my full retirement benefit with cost of living for the rest of his life, providing Continued on page 37

PURITY Spring is in the air, more light, more sun with the hour ahead this weekend. Time to think about “spring cleaning. When I was growing up, it was a thing in the house. Windows washed, thorough cleaning of blinds, drapes cleaned/changed to lighter versions, carpets refreshed, and on and on. It marked a turning point from winter to spring/summer in our family, home and my favorite seasons were almost here. In keeping with the coming of spring and a time of renewal, cultivation and blossoming, our focus this month at the yoga studio is “saucha, which means “pu-

rity. Simply put, a time to think about and purify our bodies, our thoughts and our words. Cleaning out, decluttering, simplifying, leaving things that don’t serve behind. I have a visualization I do when I need to let go of something: I say either out loud or to myself what I’m letting go of and turn around leaving it behind me. Then I say goodbye. Rituals tend to solidify what we are trying to do in a way. The “saucha practice, one of the codes of living soulfully from an ancient yogic text, clears the way to lighten up in our bodies, minds and hearts. It is a benefit to

the practice, when we investigate how to cleanse the physical body, clear the mind of scattered and unhealthy thoughts, and lighten the heart of negative emotions, we feel better—just in time for spring! Cleansing the body will be different for everyone—maybe it is simply starting to drink more water, or making clean-eating choices a couple of more times a week than we’re used to doing. Everything is a process, sticking to an intention of making some purifying choices will only brighten our lives. Recognizing what is “heavy physically and figuring out a way to lighten the load will feel great. Scattered and too many thoughts bring such dis-ease in our minds. Too much going on in the mind. So, taking the time to unload what has come in that has no meaning and focusing on what is right at hand will bring ease and lightness. It is very individual; only you know what you have to unload. Slow down and do one thing at a time. Slow down and think one thing at a time. Negative emotions resulting from experiences or encounters

Maximize the value of your home.

are toxic to our well-being. There is no where for them to go, they continue to poison us and have no benefit. So why hold on to them? How to let them go? Accepting them, acknowledging that they have no purpose in our being and formulating a ritual to let them go is one way. I feel this way for that reason, I accept this feeling but it is not doing me any good, therefore I will lift it from my heart and replace it with a positive, loving feeling towards myself. “The practice of ‘saucha’ or purity, of cleansing ourselves and cleansing our ability to be with each moment, takes on a visceral quality. As we begin to lose the heaviness of waste and clutter, we begin to feel lighter, more spacious and expansive. Our bodies become more alive, our minds become more clear, our hearts more compassionate. - The Yamas & the Niyamas, by Deborah Adele May you be happy. May you be free. May you have compassion. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

By Beth Hanning Silent Dance Party? I recently went on a cruise, and for those of you non-cruisers, each day you receive a detailed itinerary with all of the activities. There is not one reason why one should be bored on a cruise no matter the age. There is so much to do. There are different trivia games happening during the day, dodgeball tournaments, karaoke and now silent dance parties. The silent dance party piqued my interest this year on Day 4’s itinerary. At 7 p.m. on the main promenade, there was going to be a silent

dance party. Now with my experience as a teacher and as a member of WISH, I am familiar with quiet events for children with sensory issues. At first I thought : how nice for children who do not like loud noises. Second thought was: I am going to attend and see what this is all about! This was not in fact a silent dance party, and there were no small children there. This was a party where you gave your room key in exchange for headphones and on the headphones there were chan-

nels, similar to a radio station. There were a few different channels and there were a few different deejays playing music on the upper platform. Each headphone lit up with a different color and the deejays had colors as well. So if your headphones lit up blue, you were dancing and jamming to the deejay that had the color blue on his table. I was so confused at this. I did not understand why everyone was in fact dancing and it was not actually silent. The only thing I could infer (as my husband would not let me “interview” the participants) was that in today’s society, everyone has to be happy and get what they want. I guess a regular deejay was not good enough because what if you did not like the music being played? What if you liked the genre, but then you did not like the next song? I could not believe it when I Googled the term, "Silent Dance Party," and over 140 million results were displayed. Also, there are com-

Page 27 panies that are renting the headphones and the equipment needed to participate or host a party. It also has been around at least since the 1990s, but the origin was actually logical: they had outdoor parties and did not want to violate noise regulations. Now it is described as the most millennial thing to do. In case anyone is wondering, I did not participate in the silent dance party, I just observed from a table close by and sat in awe at what was being displayed in front of me. I also snuck a few pictures…I texted my daughters who will turn 22 and 27 this year if they have even attended a silent dance party and then would they attend one. My older responded: “LOL I never went, but I know people who did. It’s weird. IDK if I would do it.” What do you think readers? Let me know. New email address is MrsHanning308@ gmail.com. Have a great week everyone and enjoy the parade.

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 4 – (1/4 pound) lean boneless pork chops, pounded thin 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1-1/4 teaspoons kosher salt ½ teaspoon ground pepper ½ teaspoon sage 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 large shallot, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2/3 cup chicken broth Juice of one lemon 1 tablespoon tiny capers, drained 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon lemon zest

The Rockaway Times Directions: Place pork between 2 pieces of parchment paper. With a meat mallet or rolling pin, pound pork to ½ inch thickness or less. The thinner the better. Mix together the flour, one teaspoon salt, pepper and sage in a shallow dish. Coat pork with seasoned flour. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter with oil in a heavy non-stick frying pan over medium high heat. Add pork, shaking off excess flour until browned. Approximately 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and keep warm. Add the shallots, broth, lemon juice and capers and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and cook stirring once or twice until sauce is slightly reduced, about 2 minutes. Stir in remaining butter and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Return pork to pan and spoon the sauce over the pork. Plate one cutlet on each of the four plates and spoon sauce over it. Sprinkle the parsley, Parmesan and lemon zest mixture over the pork.

From RISE: Visiting the Illumination Space By Katie Lowen, Shore Corps Educator

During the midwinter break, the students in the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity’s (RISE) Shore Corps and Environmentor programs participated in a series of field trips. On Tuesday, they visited

the Illumination Space at the CUNY Graduate Center. The Illumination Space is an interdisciplinary scientific exhibition space that looks at the connections between nanotechnology, environmental science, neuroscience, and photonics. Students were able to explore these schools of scientific thought

through a series of interactive displays that students at the Graduate Center have developed. For example, one project was an interactive map where students could look at the areas of New York City most affected by Sandy, and see how communities were able to respond based on the number of social services available. RISE’s students also had the opportunity to meet Ph.D. candidate, Zhi-Lun Lhi alongside his research fellows. The group presented their current research, which is centered around generating energy by utilizing the forces created through evaporation. It was especially inspiring to see such a unique way of looking at green energy production. Apart from seeing this work, students also received a private tour of the CUNY Graduate Center’s facilities, and got some insight on the amazing

and ground-breaking work the Graduate Center does. RISE would like to thank its Shore Corps and Environmentor program sponsors: the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the DYCD Compass Explore Program, the Pinkerton Foundation, and the Science Sandbox, an initiative of the Simons Foundation.

While visiting homes from Far Rockaway to Belle Harbor, she learned about the uniqueness, strengths, and challenges of families on the Rockaway peninsula. It was during these times that she saw the unrivaled resilience and devotion of Rockaway residents to their community and to each other. Honoree, John P. Moroney, is one of the founding members of an A.O.H. Division, created in Mineola, Nassau County, in the late 1980s. As a long-time member and supporter of A.O.H. Division 21, he is the current and long-standing treasurer of the division. Moroney is also the current Chairman of the division’s annual Rockaway Beach/Breezy Point Irish Festival. Moroney has been a Senior Trial Counsel for the Travelers Insurance Company for the past 25 years, and is also the owner of RBQ in Rockaway Beach. Moroney continues to be an active member in the Rockaway community, as he is the present Vice-President of the A.O.H Queens County Board, and serves as the Immigration Chairman of the Queens County A.O.H. Deputy Grand Marshal, Joe Mure, will also be acknowledged at this year’s parade for his continuous service to the Rockaway community. LIFE WITH OUR “ARTISTIC” CHILD Continued from Page 20 that he doesn’t have substantial earned income. KLA: What inspired you to become a special-need planner and open a firm? SF: I started my company when my son was 13 years old. When I went to plan with a financial advisor and attorney, I was really disappointed because all they asked me was about my income, my 401K, my house, my wife. They didn’t ask any questions about my son. So, by not encouraging me to think about financial planning from his perspective, I would have not thought about how he is going to live in the community, and how I’m not going to be one of those parents when I’m 90, my 70-year-old son is still living in my home. It’s about the excitement we want to create for our children’s future, making decisions in a more positive light with shorter windows. Stuart Flaum serves on the

NYS Developmental Disabilities Council, a government agency that addresses the needs of people with developmental disabilities. He has served on various boards, including treasurer of Parent to Parent of NYS, and secretary of the National Autism Association Metro NY. In my interview with Flaum, what was most endearing is his genuine passion to help parents navigate the road to providing financial security and a good quality of life for their children with special-needs. Join RBAF at our next monthly meeting Thursday, March 19, 7 p.m. at Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street). Our special guest speaker, Stuart Flaum, will present information and address questions on “Financial Planning For Your Special-Needs Child.” For more info, visit Rockaway Beach Autism Families on Facebook or email: ourartisticchild@outlook.com. “Join us in turning the tide for our autism community, one wave at a time.”

Hockey with a Heart By Marina Cregan

Broad Channel preteen, Danny Kirk, used his love of ice hockey and his compassion to help out a neighbor in need. Upon hearing the news of the tragic fire that devastated the Santiago family’s home, Kirk felt inspired to help. (On February 11, the Santiago’s home, located at 627 West Road, was destroyed due to a defective boiler/chimney connection. The Santiago’s have been displaced since that date.) So, on Sunday, February 23, one of the only days this year that Kirk was not busy skating with his travel ice hockey team, Greater New York Stars, Kirk organized and hosted a 3x3 roller hockey tournament at the 17th Road Park in Broad Channel. Each participant paid an entry fee of $10, and that money was combined with

snacks sales, to give to the Santiago’s. The day’s events kicked off with the National Anthem at 12:30 p.m sharp. The tournament consisted of eight teams,

with a total of 28 players. Kirk’s fellow teammates from their travel hockey team, as well as most of their families, all came out to support this good cause. Those that were unable to attend the tournament, still made donations. Kirk was very appreciative that so many of his teammates traveled to Broad Channel to support this fundraiser. Kirk’s mother, Danielle, said, “It was so nice to see how they all supported their teammates, even on a day they finally had off from hockey. They have a strong bond.” After about four hours of roller hockey competition, the “Beach Benders Team” took home the title. The three boys, Brayden Murphy, Vittorio Marino, and Joe Ramos, declined accepting the monetary prize, so that it could be included in the donation.

“It’s for a friend in need, we will not take that money,” they said to their parents. The event was also successful in attracting many Broad Channel residents who made contributions as they passed by the park. The boys were accepting donations for three days in total. They collected almost $1,100. This money will be used to help the Santiago’s return to their Broad Channel home. Kirk was able to run this successful event with the help of fellow Broad Channel resident and hockey teammate, Casey Allen, age 12. The boys promoted the event on social media, and created promotional flyers. Allen’s assistance, a generous community, and beautiful weather all contributed to the event’s success. Danielle Kirk expressed her pride in her son’s venture, not only because of its success, but because of the thought behind it and the initiative he took.

HOME TO IRELAND FOR CHRISTMAS circa 1950s By Katie Lucev

Ads like this were published weekly in many newspapers directed towards Irish immigrants throughout New York City. Thousands of Irish settled in the city following the end of WWII, and many traveled back to the old country to be with their family at Christmastime. Cunard

White Star Line offered an installment plan with a small down payment for travel on liners, such as the Laconia and Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Britannic. Today, you can get the same Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev, down payment and installment plan for Sr. (1933-2018) a Disney Cruise! (But the prices have changed, just a bit).
