OUR SERVICES INCLUDE:

• Comprehensive Eye Exams • Contact Lens Fittings • Prescription Glasses & Sunglasses • Sunglass Center World Oceans Day is Wednesday, June 8, and in honor of the day, Kona Brewing Co. is kicking it off with the 2nd Annual Catch a Clean Wave initiative, and they’re bringing professional surfer Anna Gudauskus and internationally recognized surf photographer Sarah Lee to help clean up Rockaway as part of their tour. As part of the initiative, starting June 6, Kona is leading an eightstop surf and beach cleanup along the East Coast, starting in Maine and ending in Cocoa Beach, Fl on June 16, but their World Oceans Day cleanup on June 8 will take place at none other than Rockaway Beach. Rockaway’s cleanup will start at 4 p.m. on Beach 94th Street next Wednesday and all are welcome to come help out, meet Gudauskas and Lee and have a good time for a good cause. Last year, Kona brought Gudauskas and Lee to the West Coast

for a Washington to Southern California cleanup, where more than 240 pounds of trash was collected from 15 different beaches. “After seeing the positive impact that the Catch a Clean Wave program made on the West Coast, we knew that we needed to continue this important initiative by supporting our East Coast Ohana and help clean-up efforts at their favorite beaches from Maine to Florida,” said Ashlee Conrad, Brand Manager, Kona Brewing Co. “With summer beach season kicking off, we hope this program reminds beachgoers all over the world that every piece of trash collected counts and helps us all enjoy our beaches and waterways for years to come.” To RSVP for the Rockaway cleanup on Wednesday, June 8 at 4 p.m., find the link in the bio of Kona’s Instagram (@konabrewingco).

On Wednesday, June 1, at the annual FDNY medal ceremony at City Hall, local firefighter Captain Peter E. Hayden of Division 13, Ladder Company 137, was awarded the Chief Wesley Williams Medal. Hayden, who comes from a family of firefighters, was awarded for his actions that saved the life of a three-year-old girl from a big fire at a two-story home on Beach 86th Street on January 30, 2021. Upon entering the second floor

of the engulfed home and faced with poor visibility and worsening heat, Hayden found the unconscious child, scooped her up, and brought her out to safety, transferring her to Firefighter Joseph Durkin of Engine 268 to continue care. Hayden then re-entered the home to search for anymore victims inside. His quick actions ultimately saved the life of the little girl. Hayden has been on the job since 2003.

The Irish Fest Returns This Weekend By Katie McFadden

The sunshine and shamrocks are returning, and the annual summer kickoff is back. The 9th Annual Rockaway Beach/ Breezy Point Irish Festival is this weekend and it’s not one to be missed. After cancellations due to Covid over the last two years, and a smaller-scale Irish Festival held in September, the Irish Festival has returned to its normal date and hosts, Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 21, could not be more excited to bring this tradition back in full swing. “It’s really great because last year we got shut down with Covid as we did the year before, but we did bring it back in September with the idea of keeping the festival alive and it worked out, but it’s nice to be back in June as we consider this the kickoff of summer for the Rockaways. It’s really the first big event of summer on the Rockaway peninsula and it feels good, and people are pumped up about it and excited it’s happening again in June,” AOH member

and festival organizer John Moroney said. “We’re looking forward to it.” Since details were announced, a common thing heard around town is, “Great lineup!” Last year, outof-town bands were hard to come by due to Covid, and one even had to cancel the day of the show, but the music is back in full force this year. With local performers and

the return of several popular Irish bands plus some highly-anticipated first-timers to the festival, the music alone should be enough to draw good crowds this weekend. The festival kicks off on Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5 at 11 a.m. and continues to 9 p.m. both days. The music starts at 1 p.m. Saturday’s schedule entails lo-

cal band Fool’s Night Out opening the show at 1 p.m., a taste of the bagpipes with Breezy Point Pipes & Drums performing at 2:30 p.m., followed by ever-popular Shilelagh Law at 3 p.m., the O’Malley Irish Dancers at 4:30 p.m., Maggie’s Clan at 5 p.m. and festival first-timers Seven Nations closing out the show at 7 p.m. According to Moroney, Seven Nations, an upstate-based band, has been on their radar for several years, but was never feasible ‘til now. “We were able to work something out this year which is great for both sides and I think people are really going to enjoy them,” he said. But Sunday’s lineup is just as good. The Highland Rovers will be kicking it off at 1 p.m. The Gobshites follow at 3 p.m. Celtic Cross returns this year at 5 p.m. and The Narrowbacks close out the show at 7 p.m. Vendors will be back this year. ***** The photos are up! The amazing photos, finalists in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest, are up on the boardwalk railing, around Beach 95th Street. Five bird photos are posted at the bird nesting area in the Beach 50s. Five Honorable Mention beauties are at the ferry dock. ***** If you’re not sure where to enroll your child for the 2022-23 school year, the Waterside School for Leadership, 190 Beach 110th Street, is still accepting students. Some parents and teachers are actively promoting the school as a good option. ***** The boardwalk bike lanes should be in the middle, not hugging the railing. Many people,

THURSDAY, June 2, 2022 those on foot, naturally gravitate towards the rail as if it’s a banister. People walking onto the boardwalk from ramps shouldn’t be expected to jump out of the way of a bike going 20 miles per hour. Speaking of which…. ***** How about a speed limit on the boardwalk? We’ve seen fullfledged motorcycle and all sorts of hoverboards and Segways and who-knows-what-they-are machines flying along. The argument over what is allowed might not matter if a speed limit was posted. How about 12 miles per hour? Or eleven? Or thirteen? And while enforcement will be a challenge (how’s enforcement doing so far?) the limit should be posted using digital radar signs. Studies show speeders will slow down up to 80% of the time when alerted by a radar sign. 80%! We’ll take it! D. Brian Heffernan came into the RT office and would like credit for this idea. Ok, done. ***** It's strange to say just as the summer starts but with the good

weather comes the advisory that Hurricane season is here, too. Might be a good time to consider emergency supplies, go-kits, and brushing up on evacuation routes. We can never be too prepared. ***** Best of luck to Alex Zablocki. As executive director, he undoubtedly made the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy what it is today. On Tuesday, he announced he accepted a position as executive director at the Fund for Public Housing. We’re sad to see our RT office neighbor go but he leaves behind a great team at JBRPC who will keep the great work going. We wish Alex well and hope he doesn’t become a stranger. ***** The Edgemere Community Civic Association (ECCA) is holding a meeting on Monday, June 6. ***** State Senator James Sanders announced that he is hosting a Carnival Kick-Off Launch Party

The Rockaway Times and a preview of the upcoming Queens Carnival 2022. It’ll be on Saturday, June 11 from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. at DredSurfer Grill at Beach 17th Street. ***** Former presidential and mayoral candidate Andrew Yang is pushing the idea of a 4-day work week. We agree! And even better, we would like to publish once a month and still call it a weekly paper. ***** We visited Tap That on The Boulevard and Beach 111th Street and stayed longer than we planned. The place is great. It’s got a front yard with umbrellas and picnic tables, a sleek interior with a wall of taps – you tap your own brew– and a backyard with more tables and some unique ambience as you can see the A train pulling in and out the 116th Street station. And they’ve got a great, welcoming staff. For now, they are teamed up with Meat Up Grill on the menu but will doing their own food once they get a gas hook-up.

THE IRISH FEST RETURNS Continued from Page 6 dors closed up shop, so they were few and far between but Moroney says the vendor tent will look more normal this year. “There were a lot of inventory issues last year but it’s starting to correct itself, so we got a lot of different vendors this year,” he said. The food and drinks will be on hand. “We have a good variety this year, including The Chipper, a guy who is big in the Irish section of The Bronx that does fish and chips, plus some doing zeppoles and other dessert products, a guy here doing various sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, and we’ll have corned beef this year,” Moroney said. Plus the beer tent will offer a variety of drinks for purchase to wash it all down. As kids 12 and under are welcome for free, there will be plenty to do for the young lads and lassies. “We’ll have bouncy castles, face painting is back and there will be a sand art booth for kids,” Moroney said. As always, the festival lives up to the AOH’s mission of charity. The entire event is done for a good

cause, with proceeds benefitting local churches and other charitable organizations in the community. The 50/50 raffle is a big contributor to that. This year there will be ten $1,000 winners, plus a 50/50 jackpot winner. Tickets will be sold in advance from any AOH member and at the festival at a price of one for $20, three for $50 or seven for $100. “Sales have been pretty good for far, so it should be exciting,” Moroney said. The festival will start to look more normal this year, but some things will be new. Most notable, a harpist will be at the gate, greeting people with tunes as they enter. Entrance to the festival is only $15 for adults each day and free for kids 12 and under. No personal coolers or beach chairs are allowed, as the beer tent will offer beverages and some seating will be available. With the weather forecast looking good for the weekend, the Irish Festival is forecast to be one of the best yet. “It’s going to be the thing to do,” Moroney said. “It should be a great weekend.” For more info, see Irishfest21.com

Lifeguards Needed

Last weekend, despite repeated assurances from the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation that Parks Enforcement Police (PEP) would keep bathers out of the water on beaches closed to swimming, hundreds of beachgoers entered the ocean in restricted areas. Councilwoman Joann Ariola is asking that lifeguards be deployed to these locations, to prevent an otherwise avoidable drowning before it’s too late. “Every year we see people drowning off of the shores of Rockaway, and we ask, ‘how could we have prevented that tragedy’ – well this time I’m telling you ahead of time, before we have another loss of life; we need more lifeguards deployed to those busy areas near the concessions where visitors congregate,” Councilwoman Ariola said. “Not having lifeguards posted on some of the busiest beaches of the peninsula is nothing short of negli-

gent, and it will lead to a death unless something is done to rectify the situation. I am publicly imploring the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to post lifeguards on the beaches near the Beach 97th and Beach 106th Street concessions – beaches which are currently ‘closed to swimming’ – before we need to see another young face posted on the cover of the newspaper under a headline of ‘Gone Too Soon.’ Several weeks ago, in conversations with Parks Department leadership, we discussed plans to potentially keep those beaches open for swimming on the weekend. I think that it’s time we revisit those plans, so that lifeguards will be on the beaches during the weekends when crowds grow to unmanageable numbers but off-duty during the less busy weekdays when construction is being done.”

A Memorial Day to Remember By Katie McFadden

On Monday, May 30, before enjoying the beautiful holiday beach day, many came out to pay their respects to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country, at the annual Rockaway Memorial Day Parade and ceremonies. This year’s events were even more significant as Memorial Circle was rededicated for its 75th anniversary. Monday’s services began with a Mass at St. Francis de Sales in Belle Harbor, followed by a brief ceremony outside at the Four Chaplain’s monument. The parade followed shortly after, with members of the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post 272 leading the way, followed by the Knights of Columbus, Channel View School for Research and its marching band, Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 21, St. Francis de Sales honoring L.Cpl, Michael Glover, a group honoring Lt. James B. Egan, a group honoring PFC John P. McGonigal, Cub Scout Troop 147 and more. The parade proceeded down Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Memorial Circle for the next ceremony. The ceremony at Memorial Circle cation of Memorial Circle on the was even more notable than usual park’s 75th anniversary. American this year as it served as a rededi- Legion member and veteran Mike Honan led the ceremony, thanking Parade Chairman Jim Trainor for arranging the parade and the Belle Harbor Garden Club (BHGC) which in 1947, was able to get NYC Parks to dedicate the space as Memorial Circle. One member of the BHGC, Rosemary, spoke on behalf of the group, explaining the park’s origins. “In 1947, the Belle Harbor Garden

Club designed and planned this tribute to honor these young men who left their homes and families in Rockaway that died in lands far away. At this Memorial Circle rededication, we pay tribute to the service members of our community who have given their lives for our country,” she said. She thanked Maureen Walsh and Jeanette Bernstein, members of the BHGC and Lisena Garden Center for helping make the recent revitalization of the park possible. Honan also

thanked those in the community who made donations towards the renovation. Honan then honored the parade grand marshal, Army veteran Norman Lunde, who due to illness, could not attend. He also paid respects to the late Larry Eichen, a WWII Navy veteran, who on behalf of the Jewish War Veterans, would attend the ceremony each year and read the names of Rockaway’s fallen servicemembers. Eichen passed away earlier this year. This year, the honor of reading the names was given to Rabbi Matt Carl of Temple Beth-El, where Eichen was a congregant. Prior to the reading of the names, Honan presented Rabbi Carl with a special keepsake. While the renovation of Memorial Circle took place this year, Lisena unearthed one of the original plaques from 1947 dedicated to Lt. Bernard H. Weiner, for which the local Jewish War Veterans post is named. All of the name plaques were replaced around 25 years ago, so Honan said to find an original plaque for Lt. Weiner, was “serendipity.” He presented the plaque to Rabbi Carl for safekeeping at Temple Beth-El. Rabbi Carl then read the names of the fallen. Honan reminded the crowd to remember the 645,000 American servicemembers who have died since WWI and the ceremony concluded with a wreath laying at Memorial Circle. Then, for the first time in years, the parade regrouped and continued to the Doughboy and Doughgirl monuments on Beach 94th Street, where another ceremony was held, concluding the Memorial Day events.

Boardwalk Laws

Wrong Note Dear Editor: On the front page of last week's Rockaway Times you wished everyone a "Happy" Memorial Day. It's supposed to be a Day of Remembrance of those who fought and lost their lives to protect us. I'm sure it was just an oversight using the word "Happy" to describe the Holiday. That being said, I hope everyone remembered those lost. Sharon Gabriel

Dear Editor: We are once again confronted with unlawful behavior by Parks management under the supervision of Queens Commissioner Michael Dockett. Parks says that motorized vehicles, other than wheelchairs and their Parks vehicles, are prohibited on the boardwalk. Even police cars are prohibited, they claim. The only problem with their claim is that is not the law. In New York State, we have a law titled the Vehicle and Traffic Law (VTL). The VTL supersedes every other state and local law regarding the use of motor vehicles and motorcycles. Among other things, it adopts the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The MUTCD has some very simple requirements for regulatory signs. They must be retro-reflectorized; They must have black text on a white background; The sign must be posted 7' above its base (pavement, etc.). The black on yellow signs that

Parks has posted meet none of these requirements. Further, the NYC Administrative Code provision that Parks relies on does not prohibit motor vehicles, properly registered motorcycles, or bikes with maximum speeds below 15 mph from use of the boardwalk. And it relies on suits in Civil Court, not issuing summonses for enforcement. The real question is, why wasn't Mike Dockett, who previously headed he Parks Enforcement Patrol (Park Police), fired years ago? Eugene Falik

flabbergasted and overwhelmed by their generosity and wanted to give a shout-out to them in your newspaper which I would hope they read. Don’t want my personal information attached but my husband and I both feel that an act of kindness should be addressed. We are firm believers in random acts of kindness and if we all did these types of things, the world would be a better place, Sure you would agree. Please include a God bless to these very kind and generous human beings. A.L.

Buckley-Kennedy’s Run to Honor Kathleen Buckley This year marks the 42nd anniversary of the Buckley’s–Kennedy’s 5K Charity Run. And even more inspiring than that incredible milestone is the remarkable woman who lent her love and support to the Run from the very beginning. Kathleen Buckley, who passed away in January, was the wife of Jimmy Buckley Sr. and the mother of Jimmy Jr., Christine and Kathy Ann. The 2022 Run— Sunday, June 12, at 10 a.m., rain or shine—is dedicated to her loving memory, and her family is hoping to make this run the best one yet. Kathleen Buckley left a tremendous legacy of faith, family, perseverance and love. She was raised in a large Irish Catholic family in Brooklyn, where she met and married the love of her life, Jimmy Buckley. Kathleen shared her husband’s hard-working ways and they soon found themselves the proprietors of Buckley’s Bar. Jimmy cooked and bartended while

Kathleen waited tables and balanced the books, all while raising three children. While putting faith and family at the forefront of their lives, they built a hugely successful business and expanded to other businesses as well. Their children worked alongside them and learned firsthand the importance of giving a job or reaching out to someone in need. Kathleen and Jimmy were known for their hospitality and had a vision of creating an environment where people could celebrate with their loved ones. When you were with them, you were family.

For decades, they devoted time, effort and support to HeartShare Human Services of New York, guided by their philosophy to “Do the right thing” for those less fortunate or in need. In so doing, they passed the love and faith that was central to their lives on to others. When Jimmy passed in 2010, Kathleen, though heartbroken, continued on the path they started together, spending her time with family and loved ones, praying for her children and grandchildren at daily Mass, supporting her dear friends through illnesses, and most of all, giving back. Her life was a testament to the commitment she and Jimmy had to each other and to the values they lived. Jimmy, Christine and Kathy Ann carry on their parents' work for the greater good You can honor Kathleen's love and her devotion to helping vulnerable New Yorkers by registering for the 2022 Buckley's–Kenne-

dy's 5K Charity Run or by being a sponsor. To register for the run or for information about sponsorships, see: www.heartshare.org/ event/buckeysrun/ From now through June 9, early bird registration if $30. Starting June 10, it’s $40. Youth runners (18 and younger) are $20. An in-person registration will take place on Friday, June 10 at Buckley’s Restaurant in Brooklyn (2926 Ave S) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. or at Kennedy’s Restaurant in Breezy Point (406 Bayside) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Saturday, June 11 at Buckley’s from noon to 8 p.m. and Kennedy’s from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. or on the day of the race from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. near the start line. The race will take place starting at Hero Rd. near Roxbury, down Rockaway Point Blvd. to Breezy Point Blvd and will finish at Point Breeze Ave. near Kennedy’s. For those who would like to attend the post-race Family Fun Picnic without running, registration is $25 or $35 with a t-shirt.

Beach Etiquette Part 2 Thank you so much for all of your emails this past week. Special shout out to Eamon and Maureen Charles for sending me an old Belle Harbor Property Owners sign that states, “Please wear robe to and from beach.” Everyone seems to be on the same page with people needing beach etiquette. I just want to note

these rules are for everyone, not just our visitors. I just am so happy we had beautiful weather this weekend! Rule 4: PDAs. Our beach is a public beach, not a private beach on a romantic getaway. You may hold hands but do not make out in the water or on your blanket. I have seen women straddling

their partner on their blanket, on a weekend! Last summer I saw much worse but this is a family newspaper. Thanks. Rule 5: As far as beach umbrellas go, we do not want someone to get impaled while trying to enjoy a sunny day at the beach. I understand skin cancer and sunburn are a factor in you wanting to sit underneath the shade, but you need to put in some effort. Dig a hole and make sure it is securely in the sand. It does take some effort. If you need help, ask. I am sure each beach has an umbrella guru. We have plenty. Rule 6: Do not change your clothes on the beach. Walk to the nearest restroom and change out of your bathing suit into the attire you wish to wear for your commute home. No one wants to see this. Also, do not take a full shower with soap and shampoo at the showers on the boardwalk. Those showers are for cleaning off the sand, not your full body shower. Rule 7: This rule is not really for the beach but it applies to walk-

The Rockaway Times ing around the streets and in the neighborhood businesses. Shirts and shoes are not optional. Put them on. I do not care if you are thin and can rock the look, many of you cannot. This rule especially goes into effect after dark. I saw a young lady yesterday at dusk in great shape in a string bikini and very small denim shorts that were unbuttoned to show her also extremely small string bikini bottom. There were quite a few interesting outfits Monday at The Bungalow Bar. Rule 8: Do not feed the seagulls… We locals call them the beach rats. Would you feed a rat on the subway? I do not think so. Please do not leave food around as it will attract the beach rats. Also, be careful with your food they will eat it right out of your hand. I had a seagull take a full slice of pizza off a plate as I was passing it to my daughter. Have a great week everyone. Email me @Mrshanning308@ gmail.com.

From Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge WHAT’S IN A NAME? ROCKAWAY: A PENINSULA OCCUPIED (PART 1) By John C. Harris, Ranger at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

America’s National Parks are portals to the past. With that, my goal for this What’s in a Name? series is to explore how places around Jamaica Bay were named and to connect that story with what we do here in the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Let’s start with the obvious choice: Rockaway! Easy enough—it’s the name in the paper, but it also provides a chance to acknowledge the Indigenous community from whom our community draws its name. According to Native Land Digital—an Indigenous led project through which Indigenous communities, “represent themselves and their histories on their own terms”—the Rockaway peninsula is part of the traditional territories of two Indigenous nations. The Lekawe, meaning “sandy place;” and the Canarsie, meaning “fenced in community.” It is likely that both groups used resources from the bay as a source of nutrients and to support their economies through trade. Both nations were subgroups of the larger Munsee speaking Lenape Tribe, meaning “Original People.” The name Rockaway is a corruption of the name Lekawe. It is among many exonyms, or names given to a group of people which they don’t use to identify themselves, that define how we now understand the landscape today. According to Jeffrey A. Kroessler’s New York Year by Year, colonial occupation of the Rockaway Peninsula came by way of two fraught exchanges in the 17th century. Both of which were brokered in part by the same Indigenous representative, Tackapausha, who himself was a Canarsie sachem, or leader. The

However, the 11mile barrier peninsula also plays an important environmental role in the ecology of Jamaica Bay. It divides the Bay’s 10,000-acre estuary from the Atlantic Ocean which provides a unique ecosystem to be contained within a metropolis. The NPS is proud to steward this home to key species like the horseshoe crab, diamond back terrapin, and osprey. Read next week’s “What’s in a Name? The Village of Hempstead now acknowledges that that deed was valued at less than $100 in today’s money. Then in 1685, Tackapausha, with Paman, the Lekawe sachem, sold the sparsely populated peninsula to Captain John Palmer for 30 Pounds Sterling on the grounds that it was not part of the first deal. Overtime, portions of the peninsula were merged into Greater New York until the entirety of the landmass was incorporated as part of Queens with the 1898 consolidation of New York City’s 2010 Census Data for American Indian/Alaska Native Population in New York boroughs. We Can Move Mountains I have never been so grateful to pause in community, to hold space with one another and open to the wisdom and insight that comes when we sit quietly. My mantra this week—may you feel loved, may you feel blessed. Difficult for so many to quell the tears and sadness in the wake of such violence. So, we breathe together, we send loving kindness to ourselves and all beings everywhere. We look to contribute in any way or form that will help ease the overwhelming

pain in our world. Action must be taken by all. We have the power to change some things, yet we feel powerless over the brokenness of humans. Working together will make all the difference. Together, we can move mountains and recognize our faults. No one wants to live in a world where there is disregard for humanity. Can we unite and work for the greater good of all? I believe strongly, we have the resources to heal a broken world, but it cannot be done alone. Together let us work with one another, not against one another. There are more good people in this world than bad. Don't let the negative thoughts tell you otherwise. What I notice when I look into the eyes of others is their kindness and compassion. There is more love than hate. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." - Martin Luther King, Jr. May you treat others with loving kindness and be the one who offers light to those in a dark place. We are human and we will make mistakes. Forgiveness is the greatest gift you give yourself and those who do harm. Life is difficult and there is deep suffering. Let's try to be the generation that

moves towards positive changes. How can we become wiser, more aware, balanced, and loving? Ahimsa means non-violence. It is one of the principles we practice on our yoga mats. To have selflove and respect for yourself is where it begins. Speak lovingly and kindly to yourself and bring this to others. Have compassion for yourself and all beings. Go out in nature and take great care of preserving our beautiful earth. Above all treat everyone with kindness and consideration. We are all in this together. Let us join hands and be the force that works from a loving, kind heart space. Imagine a world where we could all feel safe and be the change for our future generations to live in peace and harmony. I pray to God to help us. "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I'll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase 'each other' doesn't make any sense." ~ Rumi

Vaccines Are Crucial

By Peter Galvin, MD

Throughout human history, epidemics and pandemics have resulted in untold suffering, localized reductions in population size, and damaged economies. Often, economic harm has caused greater loss of well-being than the infection itself. There are different categories of infectious diseases. They include: Pandemic – an epidemic that spreads between countries (e.g., Covid-19 was an epidemic when it was limited to China, with global spread it became a pandemic); Epidemic – sudden increase in cases above the expected incidence in a region where the disease is not permanently prevalent and is spreading from person to person; Endemic – infection that is maintained at baseline level in a geographic area; the infectious agent

is always present in the population; Outbreak – greater-than-anticipated increase in the number of cases of an endemic illness; if not quickly controlled, an outbreak can become an epidemic; Cluster – increase above the number of expected cases in a place or time period; Sporadic disease – disease that occurs infrequently and irregularly. The development and widespread acceptance of vaccines is crucial in controlling disease caused by pathogenic organisms, especially those that acquire the capability of efficient human-to-human transmission. Despite the overwhelming evidence of safety, vaccines have been associated with a small degree of untoward reactions, even when the vaccine is properly manufactured, handled, and administered. Randomized, controlled clinical trials (RCTs) offer the most direct evidence of vaccine safety and efficacy, yet a vaccine that has been shown to be safe in RCTs may be as-

sociated with an adverse event that does not occur until millions of doses have been administered. For example, consider that the incidence of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) after administration seasonal flu vaccine is so low (estimated at less than 1 case of GBS per million doses of flu vaccine administered) that the available data does not permit a firm conclusion as to whether the vaccine causes GBS. Also consider, however, that because GBS also occurs as a complication of influenza, the overall risk of GBS may be lower in those who are vaccinated than in those who are not. Because vaccines are neither 100% safe nor 100% effective at preventing disease, some people will misunderstand the relative risks and benefits of vaccination. The data shows that almost all severe adverse events reported after vaccination reflect a temporal association that is due to coincidence. The true cause of a serious adverse event is almost always attributable to an unrelated factor

that would have occurred in the absence of vaccination but may be difficult to identify. A perfect case in point was the observation that in some children, symptoms of autism were noted to begin at about the age the first measles vaccine was administered, or about 12 to 15 months. This observation was interpreted incorrectly to support an autism – measles vaccine link. This association was thoroughly debunked. For the first time in 2020, the CDC and FDA together issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for Covid-19. This occurred because Covid-19 was recognized as a pandemic for which no vaccine was available. The vaccine became available after initial trials. The EUA was permissible based on the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act of 2005. Looking ahead, vaccines will be the best way to protect us from future epidemics. ELECTION LAWSUIT NEWS AT DAYTON BECH PARK On Wednesday, May 25, a Queens Supreme Court judge dismissed the lawsuit brought by the Dayton Beach Park board of directors against the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) that had resulted in an election of directors at the co-op being postponed indefinitely. According to a press release by attorney, Mike Scala, it has been several years since an election was conducted at Dayton Beach Park. In October 2018, the board sued HPD over the way voter eligibility was to be determined and convinced a Manhattan judge to issue an injunction preventing the vote from proceeding during the lengthy litigation process. This resulted in the current board remaining in power and free to make decisions over the co-op's operations without residents having a say.

A group of resident shareholders, represented by Scala, filed their own lawsuit seeking to enforce the residents' rights. This separate action, brought in Queens, alleged mismanagement and instances of self-dealing by board members, including in the way shareholders were being denied the vote. A venue battle ensued: with two related cases pending in different counties, should they be

heard in Manhattan or in Queens? The shareholders won the battle, and both cases were assigned to Queens. According to Scala, the shareholders had Dayton Beach Park's corporate counsel removed from their matter, as he was representing the board against shareholders. The shareholders successfully argued it was a conflict of interest for the co-op's attorney, who is supposed to represent the entire corporation, to oppose them. Following delays caused by COVID-19, Queens Supreme Court judge Tracy Catapano-Fox on Wednesday dismissed the board's case. In her decision, she wrote that the board did not meet its burden of proving HPD acted in

an arbitrary and capricious manner in setting election parameters. Consequently, the stay is lifted and an election of directors can legally proceed. Scala said, this is a major win for the residents of Dayton Beach Park, though shareholders warn that the election must be freely and fairly held. Patricia J. McCabe, shareholder and resident said, "Perhaps now we can be a democracy again and not a dictatorship. All shareholders should have a say in what happens in our home." "We knew Queens was the appropriate venue for this fight and we applaud the judge's decision," added Scala. "The people of Dayton Beach Park have been through too much already. Now we need to make sure everyone who is eligible can vote and that a fair election takes place." Scala stated he was hopeful the residents would get the chance to speak at the ballot box and further judicial intervention would not be necessary.

Speeding ruins lives. Slow down.

BC Marks Memorial Day Story and Photos By Dan Guarino

“It really gives you that sense of Broad Channel as a small town,” said visitor Barbara Goldberg, who came with her photographer husband, Sidney, to the island community’s Sunday, May 29, Memorial Day observances. The bright and clear day began at 9 a.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea. Broad Channel VFW Post #260 members and others were greeted by the congregation and visiting pastor Reverend Victoria Moss in the red and white flower garland bedecked church. In a fitting Affirmation of Faith, Reverend Moss said, “We believe that God is present in the darkness before the dawn, in the waiting and uncertainty where fear and courage join hands, conflict and caring link arms and the sunrise over barbed wire.” A prayer bell was rung also 21 times to remember the dead of Uvalde, Texas’ recent mass shooting. At 10 a.m. VFW and American Legion Post 1404 members marched into St. Virgilius Church to “America the Beautiful” sung by the New Life Choir. Monsignor Richard Ahlemeyer said the way to honor those who gave their lives in service is “to never take for granted the rights and privileges we enjoy today” and “always confront evil in our own lives, wherever it may be.” Connecting past to present, a roll call of Broad Channel’s fallen was solemnly read out, their service branch, conflict they died in, and the BC roads they lived on. Each name was answered with the call of “absent” from a standing veteran. Then “Taps” was played.

“They shed their lives to protect not just this little island, but our nation from evil,” Ahlemeyer said. After services, across Noel Road, the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department held their own remembrance ceremony. In full dress uniforms, the ‘Vollies’ paid tribute to those they have lost over the years. The long list of deceased members was read out, ending with the only BCVFD volunteer lost in the line of duty. Chief Christian Hoobs died June 14, 1917, while rushing to a neighborhood fire. Former Chief Ed Wilmarth III, noting the polished silver bell rung during the ceremony, explained “The fire bell has always been an important part of our community.” Once in a high tower above the still-in-use firehouse, it rang out to bring the community together in the face of danger. Today it rang for “those who have answered their last alarm.” At 1 p.m., a parade featuring the Channel’s veterans’ groups, bagpipers, BCVFD and others made its way up Cross Bay Blvd from 17th Road Park to the George Riekers Veterans Memorial Park. There, among other tributes, a nine-gun salute was given and Assemblywoman Stacey Amato and City Councilmember Joann Ariola spoke. “The bitter lesson of history,” Amato said, “is that freedom is not free.” The day concluded on a note of community and comradeship with a spacious back lawn barbecue at the VFW post on Shad Creek Road. In all, it was a day for Broad Channel to remember.

Wrestle Talk

QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS By Eric Jayden

This week we answer the questions sent in by you our loyal readers. The first question comes from David H. in Rockaway Park, and he said, "I don't know what to make about the MJF and Tony Khan situation in AEW. Is it real or just a storyline?" David, I always tell wrestling fans to stop overthinking what happens in wrestling and just enjoy what is being performed for your entertainment. MJF and Tony Khan currently don't see eye to eye and it's going to be interesting to see what further develops from their situation. The second question comes from Jerome M. in Far Rockaway and he

asked, "I'm excited about CM Punk winning the AEW Championship, what are your thoughts?" Jerome, I am also excited to see CM Punk as Champion. He was always one of my favorites and I have followed him through his time in the Independents all the way to the WWE. I believe CM Punk being champion is definitely good for business. The third question of the week comes from Tom R. in Bayside, Queens. Tom follows our Wrestle Talk Columns through my Instagram Page and he asked, "When do you see the Undertaker coming back to the ring?" Tom, I honestly can say, I don't really know, nor can I provide you with an educated an-

swer. We all saw and heard him say "Never Say Never" during his Hall of Fame Induction, leaving speculation that he will return soon but I'm sorry, I can't provide you with an answer to that question at this time. The fourth and last question for the week comes from Shelia K. in Arverne and she asked, "Is there any further news about Sasha Banks and Naomi in the WWE?" I'm afraid no, Shelia, the last form of news was that they were both suspended indefinitely from the WWE. Now, what the future holds for both women is currently up in the air. We can possibly see

them return back if their suspensions are ever lifted, or we can see them leave the WWE altogether and maybe sign with another promotion. At this time, it's all speculation and we just have to wait

and see. Thank you all for the sending in all these great questions. Remember, you can send your questions in to eavil183@yahoo.com and I will get back to you. Have a Great Weekend!
