OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
The Rockhampton Grammar School consistently earns the best overall results among other schools in the Central Queensland region annually. Over a third of Year 12 students obtain the ‘1-5 OP comprehensive ranking’, which generally allows them to take up university placements in highly competitive courses across Australia – including law, medicine, engineering and information technology.
“This School is special because of our community and culture, which is based on supporting, helping and encouraging one another. That’s just how we are.” – Hannah Woods, School Captain, 2018
OP or Overall Position ranking is a weighting in the Queensland final high school examinations, divided into 1 to 25 grades. Grade 1 ranking – 2 per cent of students – can be admitted into virtually any specialist field in the best universities in Australia. The final high school examination is described differently in each Australian state. In New South Wales, for example, the high school examination is called the Higher School Certificate (HSC), while in Queensland the examination is referred to as ‘comprehensive Ranking OP (Overall Position)’. From 2020, Queensland will shift to the same model as NSW and Victoria, meaning senior examination results will be standardised across all three states. The School’s outstanding teachers are the key reason for this academic success. All of our staff nurture the development of a global education culture focused on the benefits of globalisation, technology and cultural diversity. Our teachers are also able to develop a deeper understanding of their role as educators and mentors because they themselves are lifelong learners. This is evidenced by the fact that The Rockhampton Grammar School offers a unique Master of Education to all teachers from Griffith University – the only program of its kind in Australia. The degree enhances teacher effectiveness, student engagement and student performance. Upon completion of the degree, teachers are better prepared to equip students with the skills and resilience they need to contribute to and succeed in an everchanging and globalised world.
“In the first month after arriving at the School, I was really worried and there was a lot of pressure on me. Everything had to be expressed in English and I couldn’t understand a lot of what the teacher said. After class, the teacher patiently explained to me the things that I did not understand in class, until I understood. When I went back to the dormitory, students there also helped me very much. The teachers are very good. When you don’t understand, they will explain things to you until you do.” – Wu Zhuoqian, Year 11 student from Hong Kong
