Task force recommends tornado shelters in warehouse following deadly 2021 storm

6 people were killed when tornado hit Amazon warehouse

in Edwardsville

bszalinski@capitolnewsillinois.com

SPRINGFIELD — A task force created in the wake of a deadly Metro East tornado has issued recommendations for better protecting warehouse workers.

Six people were killed when an EF3 tornado with 150 mph winds struck an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville on Dec. 10, 2021. The incident raised questions about the safety of warehouses in severe weather, including if warehouses are designed to withstand extreme winds and if warehouse operators are properly prepared for severe weather.

Illinois lawmakers established the Warehouse Safety Standards Task Force in January 2023 to study warehouse safety in response to the Edwardsville tornado, and it issued its final report last month.

Among its recommendations was that building codes be amended to require tornado shelters in warehouses. The International Building Code became Illinois’ statewide building code on Jan. 1 after being approved by the legislature in 2023. The task force recommended shelters be added to that code.

The IBC doesn’t have specific requirements for severe weather because threats vary around the world, Tim Schmitz from the International Code Council told the task force. However, communities can adopt their own codes specifically to meet the needs of natural disasters in

their area.

Providing the right shelter from tornadoes can save lives, Greg Bryant from the Masonry Structural Coalition told the task force. He pointed to a 2004 F4 tornado in Woodford County that destroyed a manufacturing plant, but all 140 people in the building made it out alive after taking refuge in a designated safe area of the building.

The six people killed in Edwardsville were not in a safe area of the warehouse, Edwardsville police said after the tornado.

The 2021 tornado hit around 8:30 p.m. as the facility was bustling ahead of the holidays. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado touched down near I-270 and Illinois Route 255 southwest of the warehouse and traveled through the south half of the building. The tornado first impacted the west-facing wall, causing it to collapse. That caused other structural failures, including the roof to collapse. The tornado was on the ground for just five minutes, but debris from Amazon was found miles away from the warehouse after the tornado lifted.

An Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigation into Amazon did not find any violations, according to the task force report. OSHA recommended the company review its severe weather procedures, ensure employees are provided training and participate in drills, have site-specific information about severe weather plans, and ensure audible warning devices are accessible. The warehouse was rebuilt and reopened in September 2024.

The task force also recommended

requiring site-specific emergency plans based on OSHA’s guidelines for employers to prepare for tornadoes. The plans would be shared with local first responders and would include floor plans and details about what is stored in the warehouse.

Illinois saw a record of 142 tornadoes in 2024, according to the National Weather Service. The state has averaged 60 tornadoes each year over the last 10 years. But the number of tornadoes in the state could be increasing as technology to detect them improves, according to data compiled by The New York Times. Most Illinois counties saw an increase in tornadoes in the 20 years from 2002 to 2022compared to the previous 20 years.

Most tornadoes are not as powerful as the Edwardsville tornado, Marc Levitan from the National Windstorm Impact Reduction Project told the task force, but warehouses are more vulnerable because they’re tall and supported by heavy walls that rely on the roof for stability.

Levitan told the task force it is better to design buildings to withstand the more common modest tornadoes, and buildings should be constructed either with a shelter inside or with a more wind resistant exterior structure. The National Weather Service in Chicago reported all but one of northeast Illinois’ 63 tornadoes in 2024 had winds of 110 mph or less.

First responders also need more assistance responding to tornadoes, retired Edwardsville Fire Chief James Whiteford told the task force.

The task force agreed with his recommendation that the General Assembly provide regular funding to the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. MABAS is a series of intergovernmental agreements between Illinois fire departments to bring additional or specialized support to major incidents. MABAS calls range from dispatching additional units to a structure fire to long-term disaster response missions, including outside Illinois. The system received a $200,000 grant from the Office of the State Fire Marshall in fiscal year 2024.

Major US winter blast shuts down schools and government offices in several states

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A major winter blast of snow, ice, wind and plunging temperatures in the U.S. stirred dangerous travel conditions from central and southern states all the way to the East Coast early Monday, prompting schools and government offices in several states to close.

Snow and ice blanketed major roads across Kansas, western Nebraska and parts of Indiana, where the state’s National Guard was activated to help stranded motorists. Nearly 300,000 customers were without power early Monday across Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois and Missouri, according to electric utility tracking website PowerOutage.us.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for Kansas and Missouri, where blizzard conditions brought wind gusts of up to 45 mph (72 kph). The warnings extended to New Jersey for Monday and into early Tuesday.

“For locations in this region that receive the highest snow totals, it may be the heaviest snowfall in at least a decade,” the weather service said.

Gary Wright wore a parka as he and his husband chipped away at thick ice coating his SUV in a slippery apartment parking lot in Missouri. Wright said he will work remotely Monday, but wanted to scrape off his vehicle as an excuse to spend a little time in the snow. He also is seeking boots for their two older dogs when their paws hit the cold ground.

The polar vortex of ultra-cold air usually spins around the North Pole. People in the U.S., Europe and Asia experience its intense cold when the vortex escapes and plunges southward.

Studies show a fast-warming Arctic is partly to blame for the increasing frequency of the polar vortex extending its icy grip.

Temperatures plunge

Starting Monday, the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. will experience dangerous, bone-chilling cold and wind chills, forecasters said. Temperatures could be 12 to 25 degrees (7 to 14 degrees Celsius) below normal.

The Northeastern states are more likely to experience several days of cold after a mostly mild start to winter, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jon Palmer in Gray, Maine.

The cold air likely will grip the eastern U.S. as far south as Georgia with parts of the East Coast experiencing single-digit lows, Palmer said.

Classes canceled

School closings are expected to be widespread Monday. Districts in Indiana, Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri and Kansas began announcing cancellations and delays on Sunday afternoon. Kentucky’s Jefferson County Public Schools canceled classes, extracurricular activities and athletics for its nearly 100,000 students.

Classes also have been cancelled in Maryland, where Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency Sunday and announced the state government would be closed Monday.

“Keeping Marylanders safe is our top priority. Please stay off the roads during this storm. Prepare your home and family and charge your communications devices in case you lose power,” Moore said in a statement.

Car wrecks proliferate as storm hits

Over the weekend, at least 600 motorists were stranded in Missouri, authorities said. Hundreds of car accidents were reported in Virginia, Indiana, Kansas and Kentucky, where a state trooper was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening after his patrol car was hit.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who declared a state emergency, said government buildings would be closed Monday.

“We see far too many wrecks out there for people that do not have to be on the roads, so I want to ask: Stay inside,” Beshear said.

Road crews remained on duty overnight and were making headway Monday morning, the state Transportation Cabinet said in a social media post. But the agency warned that ice was an issue on roads, especially mid-state and northward where there was more packed snow.

Virginia State Police responded to at least 230 crashes statewide, with more than 20 injuries, between 4 p.m. Sunday until 4 a.m. Monday. There was one fatal crash, but it wasn’t clear if it was storm-related, police said. In Charleston, West Virginia, where several inches (centimeters) of snow had fallen by Sunday night, authorities urged motorists to stay home.

Snow and ice in the forecast

In Indiana, snow fully covered portions of Interstate 64, Interstate 69 and U.S. Route 41, prompting Indiana State Police to plead with motorists to stay off the roads as plows worked to keep up.

“It’s snowing so hard, the snow plows go through and then within a half hour the roadways are completely covered again,” Sgt. Todd Ringle said.

Topeka, Kansas, reported 14.5 inches (36.8 centimeters) about 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the weather service.

Kansas City International Airport received a record snowfall of 11 inches (28 centimeters) on Sunday, breaking the previous record for the day of 10.1 inches (26 centimeters) set in 1962, according to the weather service’s office in Kansas City, Missouri. In Kentucky, Louisville recorded 7.7 inches (19.5 centimeters) of snow on Sunday, a new record for the date that shattered the previous mark of 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) set in 1910.

Severe travel delays were expected to continue Monday as the storm moved into the Mid-Atlantic, where another 6 inches to 12 inches ( 15 to 30 centimeters) of snow were expected, the weather service’s Weather Prediction Center warned. Dangerously cold temperatures were expected to follow, with nighttime lows falling into the single digits through the middle of the week across the Central Plains and into the Mississippi and Ohio Valley. In the Mid-Atlantic, lows were expected to fall into the teens with daytime highs near freezing.

A hard freeze was expected as far south as Florida. Winds downed trees around the Deep South on Sunday.

Air and rail travel also snarled

The storms caused havoc for the nation’s passenger railways with more than 20 cancellations Sunday and more than 40 planned Monday and two already planned on Tuesday.

“If local authorities are telling people not to travel, it’s counterintuitive to try to run a full slate of services when people are being told to stay home,” Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari said.

More than 1,400 flights were canceled and another 740 delayed nationwide on Monday morning, according to tracking platform FlightAware. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was reporting about 46% of arrivals and 59% of departures canceled.

‘The Brutalist,’ ‘Emilia Perez’ triumph at Golden Globes

Two wildly audacious films — Brady Corbet’s 215-minute postwar epic “The Brutalist” and Jacques Audiard’s Spanish language, genre-shifting trans musical “Emilia Perez” — won top honors at the 82nd Golden Globes on Sunday.

The Globes, which are still finding their footing after years of scandal and makeover, scattered awards around to a number of films. But the awards group put its strongest support behind a pair of movies that sought to defy easy categorization.

“The Brutalist” was crowned best film, drama, putting one of 2024’s most ambitious films on course to be a major contender at the Academy Awards. The film, shot in VistaVision and released with an intermission, also won best director for Corbet and best actor for Adrien Brody. In his acceptance speech, Corbet spoke about filmmakers needing approval on the final cut.

“I was told that this film was un-distributable,” said Corbet. “No one was asking for a three-and-half-hour film about a mid-century designer in 70mm. But it works.”

“Emilia Pérez” won best film, comedy or musical, elevating the Oscar chances of Netflix’s top contender. It also won best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña, best song (“El Mal”) and best non-English language film. Audiard, the French director, made way for Karla Sofía Gascón, the film’s transgender star who plays a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender affirming surgery, to speak on behalf of the film.

“The light always wins over darkness,” said Gascón, gesturing to her brightly orange dress. “You can maybe put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you never can take away our soul or existence or identity.”

“I am who I am. Not who you want.”

Demi wins her first Globe

Though the Globes audience was particularly starry, including nominees Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Angelina Jolie and Daniel Craig, most of the winners hailed from smaller, less seen films. That included some surprises. One was Demi Moore’s win for best actress in a comedy or musical. Her comeback performance in “The Substance,” about a Hollywood star who resorts to an experimental process to regain her youth, landed the 62-year-old Moore her first Globe — a victory that came over the heavily favored Mikey Madison

of “Anora.”

“I’m just in shock right now. I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first thing I’ve ever won as an actor,” said Moore, who was last nominated by the Globes for a film role in 1991 for “Ghost.” “Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress.”

Best actress, in a drama film, was an even bigger surprise. The Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres won for her performance in “I’m Still Here,” a basedon-a-true-story drama about a family living through the disappearance of political dissident Rubens Paiva in 1970s Rio de Janeiro. Torres dedicated the award to her mother, the great actor Fernanda Montenegro, who appears in “I’m Still Here,” too.

“She was here 25 years ago,” said Torres. “And this is like a proof that art can endure through life even through difficult moments.”

Best supporting actor in a musical or comedy went to Sebastian Stan for “A Different Man,” in which Stan plays a man with a deformed face who’s healed. Stan, who was also nominated for playing Donald Trump in “The Apprentice,” noted that both films were hard to get made.

“These are tough subject maters but these films are real and they’re necessary,” said Stan. “But we can’t be afraid and look away.”

Glaser lightly roasts the Globes

Comedian Nikki Glaser kicked off the Globes, with a promise: “I’m not here to roast you.”

But Glaser, a stand-up whose breakthrough came in a withering roast of Tom Brady, made her way around the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on Sunday picking out plenty of targets in an opening monologue she had worked out extensively in comedy clubs beforehand.

While Glaser might not have reached Tina Fey and Amy Poehler levels of laughs, the monologue was a winner, and a dramatic improvement over last year’s host, Jo Koy. Last year’s Globes, following a diversity and ethics scandal that led to the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were widely panned. But they delivered where it counted: Ratings rebounded to about 10 million viewers, according to Nielsen. CBS, who waded in after NBC dumped the Globes, signed up for five more years.

Hosting the Globes two weeks before the inauguration of Donald Trump, Glaser reserved perhaps her most cutting line

for the entire room of Hollywood stars.

“You could really do anything ... except tell the country who to vote for,” said Glaser. “But it’s OK, you’ll get ‘em next time ... if there is one. I’m scared.”

The Globes are now owned by Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions, which acquired the award show from the now defunct Hollywood Foreign Press Association. However, more than a dozen former HFPA members are currently seeking to have the sale to Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions rescinded.

A win for ‘Wicked’

Unlike last year’s Oscar race, when “Oppenheimer” rolled, this year’s season has more uncertain, with a field of contenders. Most of the movies that are seen as having a chance — “Conclave,” “Emilia Perez,” “The Brutalist,” “Wicked” and “Anora” — came away with at least one award Sunday. The exception was Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,” which went home empty handed despite five nominations.

The Globes’ award for cinematic and box-office achievement went to Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked,” which has nearly collected $700 million in theaters. In a heavily arthouse Oscar field, “Wicked” is easily the biggest hit in the best picture mix. Accepting the award, Chu argued for “a radical act of optimism” in art.

Though few awards have been predictable this season, Kieran Culkin is

emerging has the clear favorite for best supporting actor. Culkin won Sunday for his performance in Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” his second Globe in the past year following a win for the HBO series “Succession.” He called the Globes “basically the best date night that my wife and I ever have,” and then thanked her for “putting up what you call my mania.”

The papal thriller “Conclave” took best screenplay, for Peter Straughan’s script. “Flow,” the wordless Latvian animated parable about a cat in a flooded world, took best animated film, winning over studio blockbusters like “Inside Out 2” and “The Wild Robot.” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won best score for their thumping music for “Challengers.”

TV prizes

Most of the TV winners were oft-awarded series, including the Emmy champ “Shōgun.” It won four awards, including best drama series and acting wins for Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai and Tadanobu Asano. Other repeat winners were: “Hacks” (best comedy series, actress for Jean Smart), “The Bear” (Jeremy Allen White for best actor) and “Baby Reindeer” (best limited series).

Ali Wong won for best stand-up performance, Jodie Foster for “True Detective” and Colin Farrell for his physical transformation in “The Penguin.”

“I guess it’s prosthetics from here on out,” Farrell said.

CES 2025 is here. What can we expect from the annual show of all-thing tech?

NEW YORK (AP) — CES, the annual trade show of all things tech, is upon us.

The multi-day event, organized by the Consumer Technology Association, kicks off this week in Las Vegas — where swaths of the latest gadgets and advances across industries like personal tech, transportation, health care, sustainability and more are set to be on display. And, like last year, artificial intelligence is everywhere you look.

CES 2024 saw more than 138,000 attendees, according to the CTA, and organizers expect to see at least that amount again for this year’s show. Over 4,500 exhibitors, including 1,400 startups, are also anticipated across 2.5 million net square feet of floor space this week.

“These are the people getting together, focusing on solving some of the world’s biggest problems — and magic occurs.” Gary Shapiro, CEO and vice chair of the CTA, told The Associated Press ahead of this week’s show.

Formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, CES brings attendees and exhibitors from around the globe, with Shapiro noting that organizers expect some 50,000 attendees to come from outside the U.S. Beyond an array of startups, big-name companies set to make appearances this year include Nvidia, Delta Air Lines, Honda, Volvo, Panasonic and L’Oréal.

There may be some increased security this year. CES 2025 arrives less than one

week after a highly decorated Army soldier fatally shot himself in a Tesla Cybertruck packed with explosives before it burst into flames outside of President-elect Donald Trump’s hotel in Las Vegas — not far from much of the trade show’s planned event space. Shapiro said that organizers regularly work with officials for event safety and that “modest” changes were made in response to recent events, but couldn’t go into further detail.

The AP spoke with Shapiro about what to expect for CES 2025. The conversation has been edited for clarity and length.

CES 2025 is here. What are the main themes we can expect this

week?

CES 2025 will be an exceptional leap forward in terms of innovation and technology, with a focus on a variety of themes important to the future of humanity. Over 4,000 companies will be here, on literally miles and miles of exhibit space. And they’ll be showing solutions to fundamental human problems — like access to food, clean air, clean water and mobility, as well as health care technology.

We also have newer categories. We’re seeing more technology for the disability community, for example. Products that can serve people with disabilities had a large presence last year, and we expect that to be even bigger this year. Overall, the show is serving humanity and using technology and innovation to fill in gaps where we need a lot more work.

Relationships

AI is everywhere again this year. Are there any specific trends we should keep an eye out for?

Generative AI is affecting virtually every area. Just about every major exhibitor will be talking about AI in one form or another at CES this week. For businesses, the focus is more on enterprise and productivity. But for individuals, it’s about personalization. We’ll see exhibitors, such as PC companies, focusing on personalization in new products for the PC and laptop marketplace. And then there’s AI being used in mobility — and not just in features for cars and self-driving. It’s for all sorts of vehicles, including agricultural products from companies like Caterpillar and John Deere.

What kind of oversight is there for the gadgets and products we’ll see at CES this week?

The industry representing the companies involved welcomes government regulation. The government’s job is to say this is what is unsafe. And so the companies know what is legal and what is not. At the same time, a big challenge is if government stops innovation — so the question is for every country is finding that balance.

How could policies from the incoming Trump administration — like proposed tariffs on foreign goods — impact consumer products like those seen at CES?

We expect the Trump administration to take a much more pro-business approach that favors innovation, including a focus on all sorts of energy sources, which is very important important. But tariffs are taxes. And we know that they are inflationary and paid for by consumers.

If we go forward with the proposals that

the President-elect has indicated he may put in place, there would be severe impacts on the prosperity of the U.S. It depends on how exactly these tariffs are adopted but under some of the proposals, we estimate a range of a 30 to 50% price increases for basic products like PCs, cell phones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches and all sorts of different products that consumers get a great value on today. That means that fewer people will be able to access these products. And, of course, other countries may then retaliate against U.S. exports. We don’t want to go in that direction.

Are there any increased safety precautions CES is taking following last week’s Cybertruck explosion?

CES has always focused on safety. There’s a lot of things we can’t talk about, but suffice it to say, we work with federal, state, local and facility officials for lots of planning. We’ve made some modest changes given the recent events, but we’re always trying to do it better.

CES also arrives a month after the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO. Have companies made any additional security requests for their attending executives?

I think companies are excited to come here. And any requests we’ve gotten have been extremely isolated.

Having top executives here, especially after COVID, is very special. People are focused on coming to Las Vegas and having this opportunity to meet face-to-face and finding the serendipity and discovery that happens when you’re making these business connections in person. That’s why trade shows like CES and others are such important events for the world.

Daytripping

The Lizzadro Museum

Would you cut up this ancient Chinese carving for a pair of jade cuff links? In the 1940s, Joseph Lizzadro didn’t either. As a lapidary hobbyist, he had been seeking a piece of jade to fashion into personal jewelry. This is the piece of jade that he received, which formed the beginning of his personal collection and, ultimately, the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art. Joseph Lizzadro was born in Southern Italy in 1898. As a young boy, Joseph was fascinated by rocks and minerals while playing marbles with agates. He and his father emigrated to Chicago, where he started working in his father’s cobbler shop and learned the value of fine craftsmanship.

In 1916, at age 18, Lizzadro began working for the Meade Electric Company, which was then a retail appliance store. Thomas Meade, the proprietor, admired the work of Lizzadro and another employee and gave them stock in the company. Meade died unexpectedly in 1929, leaving the company to his two employees. The Meade Electric Company branched out into the installation of traffic signals. The company prospered and it made Lizzadro a wealthy man.

During the Great Depression, Lizzadro and his daughter Bonnie traveled to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula in search of agates and other minerals. Lizzadro became interested in cutting and polishing the agates and other materials he collected. He reached out to skilled local people, who taught him lapidary and silversmithing skills.

Lizzadro began collecting fine pieces, particularly jade from China. After the war, during the regime of Mao and the Great Leap Forward, ancient artifacts became disfavored in China. Using the wealth he had accumulated, Lizzadro was able to acquire many significant jade and other artifacts at a small fraction of the price that these pieces would have

otherwise commanded. As his collection grew in the 1950s, it quickly overwhelmed his home and led to the establishment of the Lizzadro Museum of Art.

The museum opened in 1962 in Elmhurst. The museum has grown to become the largest museum of lapidary art in America. The Lizzadro Museum was fortunate to receive the contribution of a significant jade collection at the Oakland Museum. It has also received lapidary contributions from the collection of Richard Dreihaus. In 1919, the Lizzadro Museum moved to Oak Brook.

Much of the museum’s collection focuses on Jade. Jade is the name for two semi-precious metamorphic stones, jadeite and nephrite. It is a very hard metamorphic rock that is found in various places on the earth. Chinese carvers had access to jadeite mines in what is now northeast Myanmar (Burma). Jade is very difficult to carve using traditional methods, and artists would use water and abrasive sand to produce their works. The museum has a good exhibit that explains both the geology and lapidary aspects of jade.

Jade is naturally white in color. Jade can come in a rainbow of colors, depending on the other minerals in the stone. We think of jade as green, but it is chromium contained in the rock that gives imperial jade its familiar greenish hue. Iron will cause jade to be blue. Black jade is from graphite. An artist working with a piece of jade does not know the color of the rock until it is exposed and must work with the color as it appears. Jade resists carbon dating and it is often impossible to determine exactly when a piece was made. The goal of a Chinese jade carver was to produce an article that matched a standard of perfection, rather than leaving a distinctive hallmark.

The museum also has an impressive collection of stone mosaics from both the Florentine and Roman tradition. In the entry vestibule, there is a stone mosaic

of Joseph Lizzadro. Miniature dioramas showcase other pieces in the collection. Another gallery explores general aspects of geology, including birthstones. There are also special exhibitions.

This is a very unusual museum with a truly beautiful collection of objects. Regardless of your knowledge of geology, the collection is impressive. If you are looking for scientific background

supporting the lapidary art, you’ll find it here. Or, you can simply focus on the beautiful stones and carvings. Either way, you won’t be disappointed. It should take about 60-90 minutes to tour the museum.

The museum is located at 1220 Kensington Road, at Jorie Blvd. in Oak Brook, just south of Oakbrook Center. Open daily 1-5 except Monday. Admission $10. The website is lizzadromuseum.org.

While you may have other resolutions for the year, I always aim to have garden resolutions. What I like about garden resolutions is that they are usually goals I will implement later in the year, but may require some planning or research, a task I can do during the winter. Further, these goals are sometimes very small/easily measurable ones.

One of the primary ones I have is to grow a new vegetable and/or cultivars I haven’t grown before. In the past, this has meant new tomato varieties, artichokes, and thai eggplant. Of these 3, only the eggplant has taken a place in my garden,

Energy & Environment

Garden resolutions for 2025

which I find a success. Last year, I focused on growing pumpkins like ‘Cinnamon Girl’, ‘Cronus’ and others. These grew well and I will still find space for these varieties this summer. For 2025, I have decided to grow fennel. It’s an interesting bulb vegetable/herb that I enjoy and eat but haven’t grown before in my garden. You might also decide to invest in perennial plants like asparagus, rhubarb, horseradish, or fruits. These may take some years, usually 3-4 for establishment, in order to determine if they are the right fit for you. For my home, this has meant a perennial garden area where I am continually adding and removing plants that don’t always perform well.

Currently in this space, I have honeyberry, grapes, peaches, rhubarb, annual blackberries, and bush cherries. This year’s resolution is to graft apple trees from a heritage family orchard that will go in this perennial garden. I have not done much grafting before and yet it’s a goal of mine to get comfortable with grafting. These resolutions may require planning, researching, and finding the resources that you need. Right now is the best time to be looking for and ordering seeds, plants, and other materials. Most online companies have their 2025 inventory listed and typically will send you the plants when you can actually plant them in the spring.

Finally, don’t forget about the other tools/materials/trainings that can help out your growing experience in 2025. One year, I decided that I wanted to improve my seed starting experience which meant researching and investing in a seed starting system that could allow me to have more robust transplants. You may find that a particular tool/system could dramatically change your growing experience and could be an easy resolution to check off. As I think of this resolution for 2025, learning to graft/acquire fruit tree grafting material is what I will be doing. Environmental and participatory democracy concerns in Montana

Contributors

We spent a summer in Idaho managing a summer camp focused on providing students from small community schools opportunities to interact with each other before entering high school. The program was designed to link practical outdoor experiences with concepts developed in the school curriculum. Students were bussed in from participating schools and housed in cabins adjacent to a national forest and a stream that flowed into the Snake River.

The program, sponsored by the federal government, included some of the ecological practices used by the federal government to manage natural resources on government property. Tension existed between the interests supporting federal long term management of the properties for a wide range of societal benefits and efforts to privatize the resources to use them for their personal goals.

One experience we provided students was water quality lessons focused on determining the ecological health of a stream based on organisms found in it. Students wearing flotation devices seined the stream, identified the species

captured and later released them after determining their role in the stream’s ecology.

Tensions involved in managing western resources continue to exist and have intensified since our summer experience in Idaho. Down to Earth, the publication of The Montana Environmental Information Center (MEIC), provides news on environmental struggles in the state. A current environmental concern is preparing for a serious attack on the state’s natural resources. One issue is a potential effort to weaken or eliminate the state’s Environmental Policy Act in order to open a methane powered electrical generation plant which would add to climate change while adversely impacting human and environmental health. Another concern is a potential effort to weaken water quality protections at coal mines and other hard rock mines. If incoming Federal administration efforts to weaken federal environmental laws are successful they could also weaken state laws enacted to meet minimal federal laws. If federal agencies allow states to weaken their environmental laws the MEIC will turn to the courts to protect their interests.

Other potential legislation anticipated

include allowing developers and government officials to ignore water needs of existing agricultural, fish and wildlife operations which are already stressed from climate change and environmental deterioration.

MEIC anticipates legislation that removes basic citizen rights, including the right to go to court, the right to know, the right to participate and the right to an independent judicial branch. Potential attacks on human and constitutional rights of due process and equal protection are expected.

While the MEIC lobbyists anticipate extreme policy initiatives their sense of alarm might stem from their experiences and the contents of The Heritage Foundation’s Conservative Promise for a Second Trump Administration which critics portray as a mandate for authoritarian leadership.

Concerns raised regarding the potential impacts of weakening federal environmental rules are shared by some of environmentally orientated organizations in Canada. One example is an article on the Canadian website The Tyee in response to Musk’s declaration that Canada’s government is illegitimate.

David Beers provided a detailed criticism

of Musk’s views and actions. He closes his criticism of Musk by addressing his plan to colonizes Mars as a means to escape what vexes us on earth.

Beers’ criticism of efforts to colonize Mars relied on the perspective of Mark McCaughrean, a senior adviser for science and exploration at the European Space Agency. McCaughrean characterized it as. “A wild-eyed investment pitch… wrapped in evangelisms of saving humanity from itself and the problem wrought on this planet.” Beers cited another comment from Ellen Stofan, a former chief NASA chief scientist. She sees “Job one is to keep this planet habitable.” “There isn’t a planet B”

With a growing global population, increasing resource scarcity, ongoing environmental deterioration, an aggressive conservative agenda, political tensions are likely to increase both within our country and around the globe. Increasing concentration of wealth and political power also reduces the ability of citizens to impact decisions impacting their wellbeing and the health of the planet.
