Appeals court skeptical of Mike Bost’s case to stop ballot counts after Election Day
7th Circuit judges hear oral argu- ments after lower court judge threw case out
BY HANNAH MEISEL CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS HMEISEL@CAPITOLNEWSILLINOIS.COMCHICAGO – A panel of federal appellate judges on Thursday seemed skeptical of legal arguments made on behalf of Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, who claims Illinois’ law allowing counting of mail-in ballots for two weeks after an election is in violation of federal law.
Bost’s late 2022 lawsuit was filed with help from a conservative group that assisted former President Donald Trump’s eorts to block the counting of mail-in ballots after Election Day 2020. The suit named the Illinois State Board of Elections, seeking the court’s intervention against a 2015 state law that allows vote-by-mail ballots to be counted if they’re received within 14 days of Election Day so long as they were postmarked on or before Election Day.
A lower court judge dismissed Bost’s case last summer, ruling the state’s law governing mail-in ballots is in step with federal law. But Bost appealed, leading to Thursday’s oral arguments in front of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.
The arguments happened to be scheduled nine days after Illinois’ 2024 Primary Election, in which the race for Cook County State’s Attorney was still too close to call Thursday as local election authorities were still counting mail-in ballots. While that scenario didn’t come up in front of the panel, Bost’s own recent electoral history did.
“Right now, he’s ahead in the count,” Bost’s attorney Russell Nobile said of his client’s close race against Republican challenger, former State Sen. Darren Bailey, R-Xenia, the failed GOP candidate for governor in 2022. The Associated Press called the race for Bost the morning after the March 19 primary when Bost was 2,590 votes ahead of Bailey.
“He has spent nine days monitoring late arrival ballots, calling districts, checking the internet, having his sta do it, to make sure that the victory that is believed he received on election night is not taken away by late-arriving ballots,” Nobile said.
In dismissing the case last summer, U.S. District Judge John Kness rejected Bost’s arguments that he had the right to sue over Illinois’ law allowing ballots to be counted for two weeks after Election Day. Bost claimed the law forced him to spend significant resources on his campaign for that same time period.
“It is mere conjecture that, if Congressman Bost does not spend the time and resources to confer with his sta and watch the results roll in, his risk of losing the election will increase,” the judge wrote. “Under the letter of Illinois law, all votes must be cast by Election Day, so Congressman Bost’s electoral fate is sealed at midnight on Election Day, regardless of the resources he expends after the fact.”
Alex Hemmer, who argued on behalf of the Board of Elections, sought to discredit any argument that Bost’s lawsuit was on behalf of voters who were “injured” by the law because the continued counting of mail-in ballots for two weeks after Election Day would “dilute” votes made on or before Election Day.
“Voters aren’t injured by a law that makes it easier for voters to cast ballots,” Hemmer told the panel.
Bost had also made an originalist argument about Illinois’ ballot counting law not comporting to the nearly two-century-old law that set Election Day as the first Tuesday in November. But Hemmer cut that argument down, pointing out that the nation’s first mass use of absentee voting occurred during the Civil War, when soldiers’ ballots were counted “days or weeks” after Election Day.
“The historical record does not support this argument at all,” he said. “If anything, it tends to refute it,” he said.

Judge Michael Scudder pointed out that many states also allow for the counting of mail-in ballots after Election Day, and pointed out that Congress has long allowed ballots from overseas military personnel and has updated federal law recently enough to have considered the existence and impact of other state laws.
“It seems odd, though, in the military statutes, that Congress would acknowledge and respect the fact that some states have receipt deadlines that postdate Election Day,” Scudder said. “And that in the text of the federal statutes, Congress would allow those to be respected if, at the same time, all of the state law was categorically preempted.”

Invaders from underground are coming in cicada-geddon. It’s the biggest bug emergence in centuries
By Seth Borenstein Associated PressTrillions of evolution’s bizarro wonders, red-eyed periodical cicadas that have pumps in their heads and jet-like muscles in their rears, are about to emerge in numbers not seen in decades and possibly centuries.
Crawling out from underground every 13 or 17 years, with a collective song as loud as jet engines, the periodical cicadas are nature’s kings of the calendar.
These black bugs with bulging eyes differ from their greener-tinged cousins that come out annually. They stay buried year after year, until they surface and take over a landscape, covering houses with shed exoskeletons and making the ground crunchy.
This spring, an unusual cicada double dose is about to invade a couple parts of the United States in what University of Connecticut cicada expert John Cooley called “cicada-geddon.” The last time these two broods came out together in 1803 Thomas Jefferson, who wrote about cicadas in his Garden Book but mistakenly called them locusts, was president.
“Periodic cicadas don’t do subtle,” Cooley said.
If you’re fascinated by the upcoming solar eclipse, the cicadas are weirder and bigger, said Georgia Tech biophysicist Saad Bhamla.
“We’ve got trillions of these amazing living organisms come out of the Earth, climb up on trees and it’s just a unique experience, a sight to behold,” Bhamla said. “It’s like an entire alien species living underneath our feet and then some prime number years they come out to say hello.”
At times mistaken for voracious and unrelated locusts, periodical cicadas are more annoying rather than causing biblical economic damage. They can hurt young trees and some fruit crops, but it’s not widespread and can be prevented.
The largest geographic brood in the nation -- called Brood XIX and coming out every 13 years -- is about to march through the Southeast, having already created countless boreholes in the red Georgia clay. It’s a sure sign of the coming cicada occupation. They emerge when the ground warms to 64 degrees (17.8 degrees Celsius), which is happening earlier than it used to because of climate change, entomologists said. The bugs are brown at first but darken as they mature.
Soon after the insects appear in large
numbers in Georgia and the rest of the Southeast, cicada cousins that come out every 17 years will inundate Illinois. They are Brood XIII.
“You’ve got one very widely distributed brood in Brood XIX, but you have a very dense historically abundant brood in the Midwest, your Brood XIII,” said University of Maryland entomologist Mike Raupp.
“And when you put those two together… you would have more than anywhere else any other time,” University of Maryland entomologist Paula Shrewsbury said.
These hideaway cicadas are found only in the eastern United States and a few tiny other places. There are 15 different broods that come out every few years, on 17- and 13-year cycles. These two broods may actually overlap — but probably not interbreed — in a small area near central Illinois, entomologists said.
The numbers that will come out this year – averaging around 1 million per acre over hundreds of millions of acres across 16 states – are mind-boggling. Easily hundreds of trillions, maybe quadrillions, Cooley said.
An even bigger adjacent joint emergence will be when the two largest broods, XIX and XIV, come out together in 2076, Cooley said: “That is the cicada-palooza.”
The origin of some of the astronomical cicada numbers can likely be traced to evolution, Cooley and several other entomologists said. Fat, slow and tasty, periodical cicadas make ideal meals for birds, said Raupp, who eats them himself. (His school put out a cicada cookbook called “Cicada-Licious.” ) But there are too many for them to be eaten to extinction, he said.
“Birds everywhere will feast. Their bellies will be full and once again the cicadas will emerge triumphant,” Raupp said.
The other way cicadas use numbers, or math, is in their cycles. They stay underground either 13 or 17 years, both prime numbers. Those big and odd numbers are likely an evolutionary trick to keep predators from relying on a predictable emergence.
The cicadas can cause problems for young trees and nurseries when their mating and nesting weighs down and breaks branches, Shrewsbury said.
Periodical cicadas look for vegetation surrounding mature trees, where they can mate and lay eggs and then go underground to feast on the roots, said
Mount St. Joseph University biologist Gene Kritsky, a cicada expert who wrote a book on this year’s dual emergence. That makes American suburbia “periodical cicada heaven,” he said.
It can be hard on the eardrums when all those cicadas get together in those trees and start chorusing. It’s like a singles bar with the males singing to attract mates, with each species having its own mating call.
“The whole tree is screaming,” said Kritsky, who created a Cicada Safari app to track where the cicadas are.
Cooley takes hearing protection because it can get so intense.
“It’s up in the 110 decibel range,” Cooley said. “It’d be like putting your head next to a jet. It is painful.”
The courtship is something to watch, Kritsky imitated the male singing “ffaairro (his pitch rising), ffaairro.”
“She flicks her wings,” Kritsky narrated in a play-by-play. “He moves closer. He sings. She flicks her wings. When he gets really close, he doesn’t have a gap, he’ll go ffaairro, ffaairro, ffaairro, fffaairo.”
Then the mating is consummated, with the female laying eggs in a groove in a tree branch. The cicada nymph will fall to the ground, then dig underground to get to the roots of a tree.
Cicadas are strange in that they feed on the tree’s xylem, which carry water and some nutrients. The pressure inside the xylem is lower than outside, but a pump in the cicada’s head allows the bug to get fluid that it otherwise wouldn’t be able to get out of the tree, said Carrie Deans, a University of Alabama Huntsville entomologist.
The cicada gets so much fluid that it has a lot of liquid waste to get rid of. It does so thanks to a special muscle that creates a jet of urine that flows faster than in most any other animal, said Georgia Tech’s Bhamla.
In Macon, Georgia, T.J. Rauls was planting roses and holly this week when he came across a cicada while digging. A neighbor had already posted an image of an early-emerging critter.
Rauls named his own bug “Bobby” and said he’s looking forward to more to come.
“I think it will be an exciting thing,” Rauls said. “It will be bewildering with all their noises.”

Israeli troops withdraw from Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest, after 2-week raid
By Wafaa Shurafa, Samy Magdy and Tia Goldenberg Associated PressDEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Israeli military withdrew from Gaza’s largest hospital early Monday after a two-week raid that engulfed the facility and surrounding districts in fighting. Footage showed widespread devastation, with the facility’s main buildings reduced to burned-out husks.
The military has described the raid on Shifa Hospital as a major battlefield victory in the nearly six-month war and said its troops killed 200 militants in the operation, though the claim they were all militants could not be confirmed.
But the raid came at a time of mounting frustration in Israel, with tens of thousands protesting Sunday against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and demanding that he do more to bring home dozens of hostages held in Gaza. It was the largest anti-government demonstration since the start of the war.
In other developments, a second shipment of food aid arrived by sea Monday in the latest test of a new maritime route from the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus. One of the three boats could be seen off the coast, and Cyprus’ foreign minister said they had received permission to unload. The precise mechanism of delivery was not yet clear.
The fighting around Shifa showed that Hamas can still put up resistance even in one of the hardest-hit areas. Israel said it had largely dismantled Hamas in northern Gaza and withdrew thousands of troops late last year.
The raid also gutted a hospital that had once been the heart of Gaza’s health system but which doctors and staff had struggled to get even partially operating again after a previous Israeli assault in November.
Israel said it launched the latest raid on Shifa because senior Hamas operatives had regrouped there and were planning attacks. It identified six officials from Hamas’ military wing it said were killed inside the hospital during the raid. It also said it seized weapons and valuable intelligence.
The military said it killed 200 militants inside and outside Shifa, though it provided no evidence all were militants.
The raid triggered days of heavy fighting for blocks around Shifa, with witnesses reporting airstrikes, the shelling of homes and troops going house to house to force residents to leave.
After the troops withdrew, hundreds of Palestinians returned to search for lost loved ones or examine the damage.
Among the dead were Ahmed Maqadma
and his mother — both doctors at Shifa — and his cousin, said Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta, a Palestinian-British doctor who volunteered at Shifa and other hospitals during the first months of the war before returning to Britain.
The fate of the three had been unknown since they talked by phone with family as they tried to leave Shifa nearly a week ago and the line suddenly went dead. On Monday, relatives found their bodies with gunshot wounds about a block from the hospital, said Abu Sitta, who is in touch with the family.
Bassel al-Hilou said the bodies of seven of his relatives were found in the wreckage of a house near Shifa where they had been sheltering when it was demolished by a strike.
“There was a massacre in my uncle’s house,” he told The Associated Press. “The situation was indescribable.”
Mohammed Mahdi, who was among those who returned to the area, described a scene of “total destruction.” He said several buildings had been burned down and that he counted six bodies in the area, including two in the hospital courtyard, though it was not clear when they died.
Video footage circulating online showed the main buildings of Shifa charred and heavily damaged. Several witnesses said army bulldozers had plowed up a mass grave that had been dug in November in Shifa’s courtyard, leaving many bodies exposed.
At least 21 patients died during the raid, World Health Organization DirectorGeneral Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus posted late Sunday on X, formerly Twitter.
He said over a hundred patients were still inside the compound during the operation, including four children, 28 critical patients and many who suffered from infected wounds and dehydration.
The military denied that its forces harmed any civilians inside the compound. Israel has accused Hamas of using hospitals for military purposes and has raided many hospitals across the territory.
Critics accuse the army of recklessly endangering civilians and of decimating a health sector already overwhelmed with wounded.
Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the top military spokesman, said Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad group established their main northern headquarters inside the hospital. He described days of close-quarters fighting and blamed Hamas for the destruction, saying some fighters barricaded themselves inside hospital wards while others launched mortar rounds at the compound.
Hagari said the troops arrested some
900 suspected militants during the raid, including more than 500 Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters, and seized over $3 million in different currencies, as well as weapons.
He said the army evacuated more than 200 of the estimated 300 to 350 patients and delivered food, water and medical supplies to the rest. Two Israeli soldiers were killed in the raid, the military said.
The military previously raided Shifa in November, after saying Hamas maintained an elaborate command and control center inside and beneath the compound. It revealed a tunnel running beneath the hospital that led to a few rooms, as well as weapons it said it had confiscated from inside medical buildings, but nothing on the scale of what it had alleged prior to that raid.
The war began on Oct. 7, when Hamasled militants stormed into southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 people hostage.
Israel responded with an air, land and sea offensive that has killed at least 32,845 Palestinians, around two-thirds of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count. The Israeli military blames the civilian toll on Palestinian militants because they fight in dense residential areas.
The war has displaced most of the
territory’s population and driven a third of its residents to the brink of famine. Northern Gaza, where Shifa is located, has suffered vast destruction and has been largely isolated since October, leading to widespread hunger.
The aid ships that arrived Monday carried some 400 tons of food and supplies in a shipment organized by the United Arab Emirates and the World Central Kitchen, the charity founded by celebrity chef José Andrés. Last month a ship delivered 200 tons of aid in a pilot run.
Netanyahu has vowed to keep up the offensive until Hamas is destroyed and all hostages are freed. He says Israel will soon expand ground operations to the southern city of Rafah, where some 1.4 million people — more than half of Gaza’s population — have sought refuge.
But he faces mounting pressure from Israelis who blame him for the security failures of Oct. 7 and from some families of the hostages who blame him for the failure to reach a deal despite several weeks of talks mediated by the United States, Qatar and Egypt. Allied countries, including main backer the United States, have warned him against an invasion of Rafah.
Hamas and other militants are still believed to be holding some 100 hostages and the remains of 30 others, after freeing most of the rest during a cease-fire last November in exchange for the release of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

Getting a soil test
BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTORSpring is a perfect time to get a soil test for the backyard garden. With the information from a soil test, you can determine what changes you need to make for the upcoming season. You may also find that the soil test provides you with a conclusion as to why your garden may have performed poorly last year.
A soil test can be performed for a troubling area and/or new garden space. This test will reveal the soil pH, soil organic matter, and certain soil nutrients. As a reminder, soil pH is a soil measurement that will allow or limit nutrients to be
taken up by the plant while soil organic matter is tied to nitrogen and soil biology.
At University of Illinois Extension, we recommend soil tests to help rule out garden problems like nutrient deficiency or disease. Further, we also does not recommend a particular soil testing lab. You can find a list of certified labs from ALTA (Agricultural Lab Testing Association): https://alta.ag/certified-labs Here you will find soil testing labs to reach out to who can provide you instructions and collection envelopes sent to you. In most cases, a general soil test will be $15-20.
It is important to collect your soil
sample throughout the growing area with 8-10 samples collected. You will not be sending o all the samples but will mix them in a bucket and send in a collective sample, usually about half a cup. With a bucket and shovel, go about 6 inches into the soil. Remove any grass and place this sample in the bucket. You will want to zig-zag around dierent parts of the growing area. Mix these samples together and submit to a soil lab. If you have areas of your growing area that are problematic, that will be a separate sample. If you want soil results for your lawn and vegetable garden, those will be separate samples since those are dierent types of plants.
The form you fi ll out for soil testing is crucial. It will ask you to list what you are growing. This ensures that the recommendations you get back are for the appropriate plants.
Results will come back to you between 1-3 weeks. These results will tell you whether you need to raise/lower the pH, what rate of fertilizer you need to apply, and whether your soil nutrients are in the right range. If you have questions, you can ask your soil testing lab for clarity.

Direct solar power
BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL ILLINOIS RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATIONCONTRIBUTORS
We know of a retired engineer who has developed a large solar electric system with south, east and west facing panels. His system is grid connected providing electricity when the sun is not shining. He also has a battery backup system if grid service is not available.
Most of us do not have the training to safely install and maintain such a complicated system and are dependent on properly trained service personnel for upkeep.
To overcome the intermittent electrical production from solar systems most are grid connected sending excess electricity back to the grid and buying electricity from the grid when the solar system is not producing. Another option is to have a backup battery system in place and disconnect from the grid.
The grid itself could include a large battery system to overcome the intermittent supply of solar electricity from solar farms.
Current large scale grid battery backup systems in use only provide about four hours of battery power.
As the use of renewable energy and electrification of homes and vehicles expand, there is increasing concern over the available supply of essential metals to meet the increasing demand. A wide range of metals and minerals are used in the renewable energy transition necessitating new mines to provide the resources needed. Opening new mines is energy intensive and increases environmental damage including carbon releases.
The push for electrification has overlooked the potential of using solar energy directly when it is available and adjusting our lifestyles to an energy economy not based on 24/7 electrical supplies. When we bought our current home, a former small animal barn came with it. We converted it into a small temporary residence if grid service collapses and heating supplies are not available.
Both the walls and ceiling were made
from 2x6 lumber which provided large cavities for insulation. We installed a small wood burning stove, insulated sliding glass windows on the south facing wall to capture heat from the sun, two 30 watt solar panels on south facing wall, a dc controller and a sealed lead battery for storing the electricity. The system powers dc lighting and a radio.
On his website Low Tech Solutions Kris De Decker describes how a far less costly and polluting energy system can be provided by direct solar electricity. Instead of relying on 24/7 electrical service we can redesign our lives and appliances to use electricity when the sun is available. He provides electricity to his living room in Barcelona, Spain, using two 50 watt solar panels, a 10 amp charge controller and a 100 AH battery. The electricity is used for lighting, powering his music system and computers and recharging some small appliances.
His solar electric panels are designed to last 30 years, the charge controller 10 years and the battery 5 years. Three-
quarters of the fossil fuels used for the components were for the controllers and batteries. Over the life of the system, the cost of replacing the charge controller and battery components constitute 90% of the cost.
To illustrate how direct solar energy can be used on a far larger scale he describes how the Living Energy Farm in Virginia is powered. It is o grid and demonstrates that a decentralized direct solar system can provide the capabilities of grid powered technologies avoiding the fear of reliving Medieval lifestyles. Both the Living Energy Farm and Cal Poly have publications describing how to produce some of the projects they have developed. De Decker expects to publish a how to do it manual for some of his projects this year. For more information on their eorts visit their respective websites.
Their ideas oer some low cost, less complex and less polluting energy options for a more sustainable energy future.
The 19th Annual Beloit International Film Festival
By Charles Herbst ContributorThis year, the Beloit International Film Festival is back at a new time. In the past the festival was held in late February. Due to several requests from snowbirds, the organizers are trying an Early-April calendar. As in the past, the festival will run for 10 days, April 5-14.
Whether in February or April, BIFF is the perfect time for dinner and a movie, a tradition that has been somewhat forgotten in the modern, Internet era. But a night out, watching a worthwhile film in a group setting on a large screen, and a tasty meal provides a great time.
Tickets are available online (www. beloitfilmfest.org) or at the box office, 439 East Grand Avenue, in Downtown Beloit. Tickets are not available at the door. This year tickets for each film are $12. With ample, free parking, this makes the festival affordable for anyone’s budget. There are many restaurants in the immediate area, and many offer after-theatre seating with live entertainment at BIFF after dark.
There are over 100 films on offer, and they are all listed on the website. It’s always difficult to choose, so we’ve included reviews of eight films that we think you might enjoy. BIFF is a Top-100 Film Festival, and all of the films are of high quality. This year, there is a good mix of comedy and drama, as well as documentaries.
BIFF has established several traditions, which are returning to this year’s festival: The Sing-A-Long film is The Greatest Showman, Saturday, April 13, 7:30PM at The Castle, Tickets $12. The Classic Film is Forrest Gump, Sunday, April 7, 2:30PM at La Casa Grande, Tickets free.

One With The Whale
Rated PG-13. Directed by Pete Chelkowski and Jim Wickens
The Village of Gambell, Alaska sits at the western end of St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Strait just north of the Arctic Circle. It is home to Chris Apassingok, an Native Alaskan subsistence fisherman, and part of a hunter-gatherer culture that has existed since prehistoric times. Climate change and overfishing by outside groups have put the village’s food security and survival increasingly in question.
As a high school student, Chris was the youngest person in his village to ever harpoon a whale. To support his family, Chris frequently cut high school and went hunting in -20F temperatures. His proud mother shared his accomplishment with family and friends on Facebook. Upon learning of this, an activist by the name of Paul Watson and his thousands of followers began to harass the sensitive teenager.
Nalu, Chris’ sister, has left the village and tries to make a life for herself in Anchorage. Despite the geographic distance, Nalu tries to provide emotional support for her besieged brother. The film notes that the Apsssingoks are in many ways a modern American family with Internet access and social media. Yet they struggle mightily to maintain their way of life. The cinematography is excellent and shows a beautiful, if precarious place to live.
The film has a local connection. Keith Carroll, who grew up in Northern Boone County, was one of Chris Apassingok’s teachers. Mr. Carroll currently lives in South Beloit and will be attending the festival.

Imagine racing 135 miles through Northern Minnesota at the coldest time of year doing your choice of running, bicycling, or skiing. The goal is to finish, avoid frostbite, deal with loneliness and hallucinations, and of course, stay alive. The film focuses on Bill Bradley, a former video store mogul turned ultra-marathoner, who has unsuccessfully tried nine times to finish the Arrowhead 135, a grueling test of physical and mental endurance. The film chronicles the race and various runners along the course. It was filmed in January 2019, as Minnesota was experiencing a polar vortex, hence the name 40 Below.
Popular with audiences, this film was the Audience Choice winner for a documentary at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival. While this is as close as many of us would ever come to running such a race, you’ll find yourself pulling for and admiring not only the third who completed the course, but the other participants for their courage and stamina.

Ben is a relatable character, and one can’t help but cheer him on—but at what price? This humorous comedy parodies cooking contests and the intensity that surrounds them. Other critics have compared the madcap tone of the film to Everything, Everywhere, All at Once—but set around a cooking contest. Be prepared for gross exaggeration and a lot of laughs.

B-Side: For Taylor
Rated PG13. Directed by Christina YR Lim Taylor (Jeannine Vargas), a 14-year-
old Korean adoptee is being reared by Bill (Dave Huber), her adoptive father. Since the death of her adopted mother a year ago, Taylor has become increasingly curious and determined to find her birth parents. Bill is deeply troubled by his wife’s death and falls deeper and deeper into alcoholism and despair.
A Korean family moves into the neighborhood and their daughter, Da-Young (Jacky Jung) becomes friends with Taylor. Da-Young’s mother Areum (Esther Moon) introduces Taylor to many Korean foods and customs that that Taylor had never experienced.
Taylor’s search turns out to lead in a different direction than what she expected, and the situation with the family next door isn’t what it first appears to be, either.
This is a strong, coming-of-age film with several unexpected plot twists. It is part cautionary tale, but also explores resilience and what one can become in life.

Better Half
Rated PG-13. Directed by Patrick Hendy Phelan
Arturo (Connor Paolo) is a classical studies instructor at a community college and is searching for true love. In his lecture, Arturo notes that Plato observed that man was once a character with two faces and sexually complete. The gods, fearing man’s power, divided him in half into a man and a woman.
Daphne (Dianne Doan) is a polygamist who recoils at commitment. They meet at a bar and proceed to have a one-night stand. Zeus plays a trick on them and fuses them together. As they are now physically inseparable, they cope with being joined and gradually begin to like one other.
Eventually, they do become unstuck and go their separate ways. But, of course, the couple finds each other again, and share a mutual interest in each other.
The film is full of funny lines and innuendoes, but always maintains good taste. This is Patrick Henry Phelan’s first feature film. While there are references to mythology, these are light and will not overburden those with a lesser understanding of the Greek gods. The film’s goofy premise is entertaining and will keep you laughing.

Two Lives in Pittsburgh
Rated R. Directed by Brian Silverman
Bernie Evers (played by director Brian Silverman) is a single-parent and works in Pittsburgh as a handyman. He is raising eight-year-old Maddie (Emma Basques) who is a boy who feels more comfortable as a girl. Bernie’s mother Carla (Annie O’Donnell) is dying in a nursing home, where Bernie occasionally works. An avid sports fan, Bernie’s initial approach to raising a child is to toughen Maddie up by enrolling him in a baseball league.
The film is a sensitive portrayal of Bernie and many of his friends coming to grips with Maddie’s sexuality. There are several scenes when Bernie discusses the situation with his peers. After his mother passes, Bernie also learns that his mother also struggled with her own sexuality. In the end, Bernie comes to accept Maddie and provides a strong supportive parental role.
Voices from the Grave
Pittsburgh and all manner of its local sports regalia is featured in the film. The film seems a bit preachy at times, but no worse than many of the Gregory Peck classics. The film has won several awards, including the audience award for a dramatic feature at the Three Rivers Film Festival.

The Tale of Billy O’C
Ireland
Rated R. Directed by Pete Harris
In 1975, Northern Ireland was torn apart by sectarian violence between Catholics and Protestants. This film tells the story from the perspective of a safehouse in County Kilkenny. The murderer of the safe house owner has a plan to wreak more havoc and must be stopped. The film is a story about small-town village politics as much as the conflict itself.
The characters’ overall desire for peace is evident and underscored throughout the story.
Beautifully shot in the Irish countryside, The Tale of Billy O’C is well-paced and definitely keeps the audience interested in a film that is full of plot twists and adventure. This is Australian director Pete Harris’ first feature film. Rather than lots of scenes full of dramatic action, Harris wanted to tell a compelling story while reflecting the magical quality of Ireland that is often taken for granted by natives. He clearly succeeded in a well-done film.

Rated R. Directed by John Vamvas
Luigi (John Vamvas) is a gangster celebrating his first anniversary at an out-of-the-way Las Vegas motel with
his wife, Holly (Olga Montes). Luigi has given his bodyguards the slip so the couple can celebrate at the motel where they originally met. Both characters are hopelessly living in the past. Originally a stage play, the entire film takes place in the couple’s motel room and translates beautifully to the silver screen.
Like any good gangster film, the plot turns serious, and holds the viewer’s attention. What makes this tragicomedy stand out are the dozens of one liners and vignettes from classic movies. If you are a movie buff, you’ll love this one!
Scarpedicemente has played at a long list of film festivals and won numerous awards. Both Vamvas and Montes play their roles convincingly and entertainingly.

Victim of a local Black Hand Gang killing
By Kathi Kresol ContributorThe Black Hand was supposedly an extortion racket that existed from the 1800s to around 1920 or 1921. It could be one man or a small group of men that were of Italian descent. They came to the United States and settled in the larger cities like New York, Philadelphi and Chicago. Smaller gangs wandered out of these big cities into the surrounding areas, including Rockford.
The men would send families warnings that included a black handprint. These warnings included an offer for a type of insurance that would protect these families from becoming victims of the Black Hand. It was an “offer they couldn’t refuse” that would become famous in the later mob organizations that were created. When families wouldn’t or couldn’t pay, bad things would happen to one or all the members. The Black Hand Crew committed these murders in the most brutal and highly public ways to deter others from refusing payments.
Sometimes the killings were for more personal reasons. One of these kinds of killings included the story of Frank Farace, a man who lived in Beloit, Wisconsin when this story took place in 1920.
On July 9, 1920 police were called to the Willows, a lower part of Turtle Creek, near South Beloit. A man fishing on the creek heard another man’s voice yelling for help. When he went to check on the noise, he saw a terrible sight. A man was lying in the long grass completely covered in blood.
Authorities were called. Sergeant Of Police Benjamin Langbrear who accompanied
Schultz and Detective Dan Torrisi went to the edge of the little creek. There they found a man they recognized as Frank Farace.
Frank was well known to the police officers. He had been investigated for supplying women for entertainment. He would bring them over from Italy and use them for what the newspapers called immoral purposes.
Frank was hurt badly and must have thought he was dying because he told Torrisi how he had been called to a card game with several men. The ones that attacked him were named Guiseppe Frazzetti and Calegero Boscio. Bosci was the one who stabbed him while Frazetti held him. He claimed that the weapon was a stiletto, a favorite with the gangs at the time.
The knife was found in the weeds by the police. It was obviously the murder weapon. It was covered in blood,
The police accompanied Frank to the emergency room of the Beloit Hospital. Doctors examined him and found that Frank had been stabbed many times. His wife Rosina was notified and made it to the hospital in time for Frank to repeat the story of who killed him. He died a moments later in her arms.
Both Guiseppe Frazzetti and Calegero Bosci were apprehended quickly. Two other men, Frank Polters (known as Frank Di Leonardo) and Nunzio DiGiovani were last seen leaving a hiding place. Police looked for these men for several days but neither were found.
When the police brought Boscio to the station to question him, they found blood on his clothes. When they asked him about
the blood, he confessed to the murder of Farace. He was taken to State’s Attorney Johnson’s office to give an official statement. Others in the room include Sheriff Harry Baldwin, Detective Dan Torrisi, a stenographer and several sheriff officers.
Bosci told the tale of John Caruso who was a Rockford Italian. According to Boscio, Caruso was the leader of the group of men who belonged to the Black Hand Gang and planned the blood vendetta. Boscio stated that a blood feud was initiated by Caruso when Farace refused an invitation to an Italian christening in South Beloit. Farace’s refusal was considered one of the worst kind of insults.
Caruso demanded vengeance and put the plans for the murder into motion. Boscio, Frazetti, Di Leonardo, and DiGiovani invited Farace for a card game. They all met in the tall grass by Turtle Creek. The men were sitting playing cards when Frazetti nodded to the others and the men jumped up. Frazetta and the other men grabbed Farace and held him while Boscio stabbed him an unbelievable forty-one times. When Frazetti described the killing, he said it was frightening how quickly Boscio stabbed Farace.
In a bizarre twist of this case, authorities arranged for Boscio to be taken to the crime scene to reenact the crime. Boscio seemed to relish this idea and gave a very dramatic performance. Some of the men later testified that it was bone chilling to stand in the location where this deadly attack took place and watch Boscio coldly relive it. It was particularly disturbing to see the lightning-fast knife thrusts that
Coscio demonstrated.
The fact that he laughed and smirked his way through the reenactment without a trace of remorse sickened even the hardest of the officers.
Frazetti went on trial first. Judge R.K. Welsh presided over the trial. There were many dramatic moments in the trial but those interviewed afterwards said it was the closing argument by State’s Attorney William Johnson that was the most pivotal moment by far. They called it the best closing argument of his career. Frazetti was found guilty of the murder.
Welsh was also the judge in Bosio’s trial. The case produced no big surprises, and no one was shocked when Boscio was also found guilty. Both men were sentenced to life and incarcerated in Joliet Prison.
Boscio made the papers again in 1949 when he wanted his guilty verdict overturned because he didn’t speak English. He claimed that he thought he was being questioned as a witness and not a suspect. It was no surprise to anyone when the judge denied his claim.
In another strange twist, newspapers of the day covered this crime and reported that five Italian families were so frightened by all the violence that was taking place in the area. These families decided to leave Beloit and make their way back to Italy, far away from the deadly Black Hand Gangs.
