Illinois politicians react after Biden drops reelection bid

After weeks of pushing from fellow Democrats – including five of Illinois’ members of Congress – President Joe Biden on Sunday announced he will not accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for reelection.

Minutes later, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee ahead of the Democratic National Convention scheduled next month in Chicago. In a statement, Harris said she was “honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”

“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” she said, referring to a blueprint former Trump staffers have put together that outlines how to decimate federal agencies charged with regulatory responsibilities.

Top Democrats in Illinois – including Gov. JB Pritzker – offered their praises for Biden’s time in the White House, while some moved quickly to endorse Harris in Biden’s stead. But Pritzker, who has often been mentioned as a potential fill-in candidate for Biden, was not among those who immediately endorsed Harris, instead focusing on the wider goal of defeating former President Donald Trump in November.

“Donald Trump is a 34 time convicted felon, adjudicated to have committed sexual assault, a racist, homophobe and misogynist,” Pritzker said in a statement. “Trump brags about taking away a woman’s right to choose, wants to rip healthcare away from tens of millions of people, proposes economic policies that will cost the middle class thousands of dollars a year, and threatens the fundamental American ideals we hold dear. I will work every day to ensure that he does not win in November.”

Pritzker has long been a Biden campaign surrogate and staunch defender of the president, and most recently said of Biden that he’d continue to stand behind him so long as he was the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.

“He’s apparently going to be our nominee, he’s chosen to be our nominee,” Pritzker told reporters Thursday at a bill signing in Decatur. “And so, we’ve got to win, because the alternative is unacceptable for the country and for the future of our nation, you know, forever, really, could be altered as a result of the

election of his opponent, Donald Trump.”

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth were both complimentary of Biden’s presidency, with Duckworth claiming that “no one has done more for working Americans than Joe Biden.”

“Now the Democratic Party must unite behind a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump and keep America moving in the right direction,” Durbin said in a statement. “I will do everything in my power to help that effort.”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also immediately endorsed Harris after Biden’s announcement, calling it “vital” that the Democratic Party unify around Harris. Johnson will be highly visible next month as Chicago plays host to the DNC.

“Vice President Harris is the visionary leader that we need now to defeat the threat of another Trump presidency,” he said in a statement. “She has proven herself as a fearless defender of our democracy. I look forward to doing everything I can to ensure she becomes our next President.”

Prior to Biden’s announcement Sunday, Illinois U.S. Reps. Mike Quigley, D-Chicago, Brad Schneider, D-Highland Park, Eric Sorenson, D-Moline, Sean Casten, D-Downers Grove and Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, D-Chicago, had called for Biden to end his reelection bid.

Of those five, only Sorenson did not immediately throw his support behind Harris on Sunday. In his statement, Sorenson thanked Biden for championing “organized labor, civil rights, technology and innovation” and for “building a strong middle class.”

In a statement, Schneider enumerated Biden’s accomplishments, including having “guided our nation through and out of an unprecedented global pandemic” and having “rescued our country from a potential despot,” referring to Trump. He also endorsed Harris.

Casten did the same, as did Quigley and Garcia.

“As we move forward, it’s crucial that we unite behind Vice President Kamala Harris and continue the progress we’ve made,” Garcia said in a statement. “Defeating the resurgence of Trumpism is essential for the future of our democracy.”

Other members of Illinois’ congressional delegation who threw their weight behind Harris on Sunday include U.S. Reps. Robin Kelly, D-Matteson, Jonathan Jackson, D-Chicago, Nikki Budzinski, D-Springfield, Danny Davis, D-Chicago, Jan Schakowsky, D-Evanston, Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, and Delia

Ramirez, D-Chicago.

“I look forward to working with her to realize a permanent ceasefire, immigration reform, and a bold agenda that centers working families,” Ramirez said on social media, hitting on themes like the conflict between Israel and Gaza and the U.S. southern border.

Those same themes are ones GOP politicians and operatives spent last week at the Republican National Convention trying to tie to Harris, including with frequent references to her being Biden’s “border czar.”

U.S. Reps. Bill Foster, D-Naperville and Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Schaumburg, did not immediately endorse Harris or anyone else, though Foster did write that Biden “passed the torch to the next generation to defend our democracy.” A few hours later, he endorsed Harris in a follow-up statement. Krishnamoorthi, meanwhile, said Biden’s decision to step away from running for a second term “demonstrated the true and selfless nature of a life committed to putting the country, and his fellow Americans, first.”

The Democratic Party of Illinois struck a tone of urgency in a statement from DPI chair and state Rep. Lisa Hernandez, D-Cicero, saying “the stakes could not be higher.”

“Donald Trump and J.D. Vance represents a return to policies that favor the wealthy, threaten our health care, and undermine our democratic institutions,” Hernandez said. “We must ensure that their regressive and divisive agenda does not prevail.

Meanwhile, the new head of the Illinois Republican Party – who’s only been on the job since Friday – took Biden’s announcement as “the culmination of years of lies from the Biden White House and Democrats shaming anyone who questioned the fitness of President Biden.”

“We as Illinois Republicans must continue to call attention to JB Pritzker’s tax-and-spend, pro-criminal agenda that drives families away from this state to protect the rest of the nation,” ILGOP chair Kathy Salvi said in a statement, poking at Pritzker’s possible presidential ambitions.

Rep. Mike Bost, R- Murphysboro, questioned Biden’s decision to remain president while dropping from the race.

“The question is, if the White House staff and congressional Democrats know he’s unfit to run a presidential campaign, then how is he fit to run the country?” he said on social media.

US-Russian journalist convicted in a rapid, secret trial,

years in prison, court says

A court has convicted Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist for the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, of spreading false information about the Russian army and sentenced her to 6½ years in prison after a secret trial, court records and officials said Monday.

The conviction in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s central region of Tatarstan, came on Friday, the same day that a court in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in prison in a case that the U.S. called politically motivated.

Kurmasheva, a 47-year-old editor for RFE/RL’s Tatar-Bashkir language service, was convicted of “spreading false information” about the military, according to the website of the Supreme Court of Tatarstan. Court spokesperson Natalya Loseva confirmed Kurmasheva’s conviction and revealed the sentence to The Associated Press by phone in the case classified as secret.

“My daughters and I know Alsu has done nothing wrong. And the world knows it too. We need her home,” Kurmasheva’s husband, Pavel Butorin, said in a post Monday on X.

He had said last year the charges stemmed from a book the Tatar-Bashkir service released in 2022 called “No to War” — “a collection of short stories of Russians who don’t want their country to be at war with Ukraine.”

Asked about the case, RFE/RL President and CEO Stephen Capus denounced the trial and conviction of Kurmasheva as “a mockery of justice.”

“The only just outcome is for Alsu to be immediately released from prison by her Russian captors,” he said in a statement to the AP.

“It’s beyond time for this American citizen, our dear colleague, to be reunited with her loving family,” Capus said.

Kurmasheva, who holds U.S. and Russian citizenship and lives in Prague with her husband and two daughters, was taken into custody in October 2023 and charged with failing to register as a foreign agent while collecting information about the Russian military.

Later, she was also charged with spreading “false information” about

the Russian military under legislation that effectively criminalized any public expression about the war in Ukraine that deviates from the Kremlin line. The legislation was adopted in March 2022, just days after the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine, and has since been used to target Kremlin critics at home and abroad, implicating scores of people in criminal cases and sending dozens to prison.

Kurmasheva was initially stopped in June 2023 at Kazan International Airport after traveling to Russia the previous month to visit her ailing elderly mother. Officials confiscated her U.S. and Russian passports and fined her for failing to register her U.S. passport. She was waiting for her passports to be returned when she was arrested on new charges in October that year. RFE/RL has repeatedly called for her release.

RFE/RL was told by Russian authorities in 2017 to register as a foreign agent, but it has challenged Moscow’s use of foreign agent laws in the European Court of Human Rights. The organization has been fined millions of dollars by Russia.

In February, RFE/RL was outlawed in Russia as an undesirable organization. Its Tatar-Bashkir service is the only major international news provider reporting in those languages, in addition to Russian, to audiences in the multiethnic, Muslimmajority Volga-Urals region.

The swift and secretive trials of Kurmasheva and Gershkovich in Russia’s highly politicized legal system raised hopes for a possible prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington. Russia has previously signaled a possible exchange involving Gershkovich, but said a verdict in his case must come first.

Arrests of Americans are increasingly common in Russia, with nine U.S. citizens known to be detained there as tensions between the two countries have escalated over fighting in Ukraine.

Gershkovich, 32, was arrested March 29, 2023, while on a reporting trip to the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg. Authorities claimed, without offering any evidence, that he was gathering secret information for the U.S.

He has been behind bars since his arrest, time that will be counted as part of his sentence. Most of that was in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo Prison — a czarist-era lockup used during Josef Stalin’s purges, when executions

were carried out in its basement. He was transferred to Yekaterinburg for the trial.

Gershkovich was the first U.S. journalist arrested on espionage charges since Nicholas Daniloff in 1986, at the height of the Cold War. Foreign journalists in Russia were shocked by Gershkovich’s arrest, even though the country has enacted increasingly repressive laws on freedom of speech after sending troops into Ukraine.

U.S. President Joe Biden said after his conviction that Gershkovich “was targeted by the Russian government because he is a journalist and an American.”

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield accused Moscow last week of treating “human beings as bargaining chips.” She singled out Gershkovich and ex-Marine Paul Whelan, 53, a corporate security director from Michigan, who is serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted on spying charges that he and the U.S. denied.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that when it comes to Gershkovich, Whelan and other Americans wrongfully detained in Russia and elsewhere, the U.S. is working on the cases “quite literally every day.”

Sam Greene of the Center for European Policy Analysis said the conviction and sentencing of Kurmasheva and Gershkovich on the same day “suggests — but does not prove — that the Kremlin is preparing a deal. More likely, they are preparing to offer up a negotiating table that Washington will find it difficult to ignore.”

In a series of posts on X, Greene stressed that “the availability of a negotiating table shouldn’t be confused with the availability of a deal,” and that Moscow has no interest in releasing its prisoners — but it is likely to “seek the highest possible price for its bargaining chips, and to seek additional concessions along the way just to keep the talks going.”

Washington “should obviously do what it can” to get Gershkovich, Kurmasheva, imprisoned opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza and other political prisoners out, he said, adding: “But if Moscow demands what it really wants — the abandonment of Ukraine — what then?”

Biden’s withdrawal injects uncertainty into foreign policy challenges

Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the U.S. presidential race injects greater uncertainty into the world at a time when Western leaders are grappling with wars in Ukraine and Gaza, a more assertive China in Asia and the rise of the far right in Europe.

During a five-decade career in politics, Biden developed extensive personal relationships with multiple foreign leaders that none of the potential replacements on the Democratic ticket can match. After his announcement, messages of support and gratitude for his years of service poured in from near and far.

The scope of foreign policy challenges facing the next U.S. president makes clear how consequential what happens in Washington is for the rest of the planet. Here’s a look at some of them.

ISRAEL

With Vice President Kamala Harris being eyed as a potential replacement for Biden, Israelis on Sunday scrambled to understand what her candidacy would mean for their country as it confronts increasing global isolation over its military campaign against Hamas.

Israel’s left-wing Haaretz daily newspaper ran a story scrutinizing Harris’ record of support for Israel, pointing to her reputation as Biden’s “bad cop” who has vocally admonished Israel for its offensive in Gaza. In recent months, she has gone further than Biden in calling for a cease-fire, denouncing Israel’s invasion of Rafah and expressing horror over the civilian death toll in Gaza.

“With Biden leaving, Israel has lost perhaps the last Zionist president,” said Alon Pinkas, a former Israeli consul general in New York. “A new Democratic candidate will upend the dynamic.”

Biden’s staunch defense of Israel since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack has its roots in his half-century of support for the country as a senator, vice president, then president. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant thanked Biden for his “unwavering support of Israel over the years.”

“Your steadfast backing, especially during the war, has been invaluable,” Gallant wrote on social media platform X.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised Biden as a “symbol of the unbreakable bond between our two peoples” and a “true ally of the Jewish people.” There was no immediate reaction from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an ally of former President Donald Trump whose history of cordial relations with Biden has come

under strain during the Israel-Hamas war.

UKRAINE

Any Democratic candidate would likely continue Biden’s legacy of staunch military support for Ukraine. But frustration with the Biden administration has grown in Ukraine and Europe over the slow pace of U.S. aid and restrictions on the use of Western weapons.

“Most Europeans realize that Ukraine is increasingly going to be their burden,” said Sudha David-Wilp, director of the Berlin office of the German Marshall Fund, a research institute. “Everyone is trying to get ready for all the possible outcomes.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X that he respected the “tough but strong decision” by Biden to drop out of the campaign, and he thanked Biden for his help “in preventing (Russian President Vladimir) Putin from occupying our country.”

Trump has promised to end Russia’s war on Ukraine in one day if he is elected — a prospect that has raised fears in Ukraine that Russia might be allowed to keep the territory it occupies.

Trump’s vice presidential pick, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, is among Congress’ most vocal opponents of U.S. aid for Ukraine and has further raised the stakes for Kyiv.

Russia, meanwhile, dismissed the importance of the race, insisting that no matter what happened, Moscow would press on in Ukraine.

“That’s it for Biden,” Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security council, said on the Telegram messaging app. “The goals of the special military operation will be achieved,” he added, using the Kremlin’s term for the war in Ukraine.

CHINA

In recent months, both Biden and Trump have tried to show voters who can best stand up to Beijing’s growing military strength and belligerence and protect U.S. businesses and workers from low-priced Chinese imports. Biden has hiked tariffs on electric vehicles from China, and Trump has promised to implement tariffs of 60% on all Chinese products.

Trump’s “America First” doctrine exacerbated tensions with Beijing. But disputes with the geopolitical rival and economic colossus over wars, trade, technology and security continued into Biden’s term.

China’s official reaction to the U.S. presidential race has been careful.

“The U.S. elections are U.S. internal politics. I have no comment on this,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.

The editor of the Communist Party-run Global Times newspaper, Hu Xijin, downplayed the impact of Biden’s withdrawal.

“Whoever becomes the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party may be the same,” he wrote on X.

IRAN

With Iran’s proxies across the Middle East increasingly entangled in the IsraelHamas war, the U.S. confronts a region in disarray.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis struck Tel Aviv for the first time last week, prompting retaliatory Israeli strikes inside war-torn Yemen. Simmering tensions and cross-border attacks between Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group and the Israeli military have raised fears of an all-out regional conflagration.

Hamas, which also receives support from Iran, continues to fight Israel even nine months into a war that has killed 38,000 Palestinians and displaced over 80% of Gaza’s population.

The U.S. and its allies have accused Iran of expanding its nuclear program and enriching uranium to an unprecedented 60%, near-weapons-grade levels.

After then-President Trump in 2018 withdrew from Tehran’s landmark nuclear deal with world powers, Biden said he wanted to reverse his predecessor’s hawkish stance. But the Biden administration has maintained severe economic sanctions and overseen failed attempts to renegotiate the agreement.

The sudden death of Ebrahim Raisi — the supreme leader’s hard-line protege — in a helicopter crash vaulted a new reformist to the presidency in Iran, generating new opportunities and risks. Masoud Pezeshkian has said he wants to help Iran open up to the world but has maintained a defiant tone against the U.S.

During a briefing Monday, Nasser Kanaani, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, brushed off Biden’s withdrawal.

“To us, the coming and going of governments and persons on top of the U.S administration is not important on its own,” he said. “What can change the atmosphere of relations is a fundamental change in this (U.S.) hostile policy against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

EUROPE AND NATO

Many Europeans were happy to see Trump go after his years of disparaging the European Union and undermining NATO. Trump’s seemingly dismissive attitude toward European allies in last month’s

presidential debate did nothing to assuage those concerns.

Biden, on the other hand, has supported close American relations with bloc leaders.

That closeness was on stark display after Biden’s decision to bow out of the race. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called his choice “probably the most difficult one in your life.” The newly installed British prime minister, Keir Starmer, said he respected Biden’s “decision based on what he believes is in the best interests of the American people.”

There was also an outpouring of affection from Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, who called Biden a “proud American with an Irish soul.”

The question of whether NATO can maintain its momentum in supporting Ukraine and checking the ambitions of other authoritarian states hangs in the balance of this presidential election, analysts say.

“They don’t want to see Donald Trump as president. So there’s quite a bit of relief but also quite a bit of nervousness” about Biden’s decision to drop out, said Jeremy Shapiro, research director of the European Council on Foreign Relations. “Like many in the United States, but perhaps more so, they are really quite confused.”

MEXICO

The close relationship between Mexico and the U.S. has been marked in recent years by disagreements over trade, energy and climate change. Since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took power in 2018, both countries have found common ground on issue of migration – with Mexico making it more difficult for migrants to cross its country to the U.S. border and the U.S. not pressing on other issues.

The López Obrador administration kept that policy while Trump was president and continued it into Biden’s term.

On Friday, Mexico’s president called Trump “a friend” and said he would write to him to warn him against pledging to close the border or blaming migrants for bringing drugs into the United States.

“I am going to prove to him that migrants don’t carry drugs to the United States,” he said, adding that “closing the border won’t solve anything, and anyway, it can’t be done.”

Associated Press writers Jill Lawless in London, Daria Litvinova in Tallinn, Estonia, and Josh Goodman in Miami contributed to this report.

One of the main insect pests we have to expect every summer is cucumber beetles. While given the name cucumber beetle, they will target almost all members of the squash family. I have encountered them on pumpkin, zucchini, winter squash, and cucumbers this season. These beetles are yellow and green in color with either black spots or strips on them. They tend to be around the size of ladybird beetles. Cucumber beetles are heavily destructive and their numbers can increase substantially during the growing season. When you are looking for these in your garden,

Preparing for Cucumber Beetles in the garden

look into the flowers, under leaves, and near the base of the plant. These beetles are very good flyers and will move pretty quickly if they are disturbed.

Some growers I know will apply a sticky adhesive like craft glue spray to yellow/ orange colored plastic plates near the plant. As it’s the same color as flowers, it may attract beetles away from your cucurbits. I’ve had some of these yellow traps out for the last 3 weeks in order to trap the beetles and scout for them. Others grower I know will use trap crops like blue hubbard squash to attract the cucumber beetles away. Intercropping with corn and broccoli has also been shown to

address cucumber beetles. Straw may provide relief for the plantings as well. Of course, there are a number of insecticides that can manage them.

One of the main actions you can take is to collect and destroy the male flowers of your squash family plants. Each squash plant produces male and female flowers that are needed for pollination and the development of your squash. A female flower will have a swollen base right behind the flower compared to a male flower that does not have this. Male flowers bloom for usually a single day. As cucumber beetles hide in these male flowers, an easy step is to remove

these flowers and throw them away the day after they have opened. While you could remove the male flowers that have yet to open, this may be an action you do after you have enough pumpkins, winter squash, and watermelon already forming and the removal of these male flowers will not make a dierence. If you are growing zucchini, cucumbers, and others that continually are yielding, you might be cautious of removing these male flowers at least until the plants have died.
