AG asks state Supreme Court to force judge to impose legal sentence Sexual assault case drew national attention By Beth Hundsdorfer

Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed a petition on Thursday asking the Illinois Supreme Court to intervene in a controversial sexual assault case that ended with a circuit judge voiding his original guilty verdict and freeing the defendant early. Raoul petitioned for a writ of mandamus urging the Illinois Supreme Court to order Adams County Circuit Judge Robert K. Adrian to impose a lawful sentence in the sexual assault case – four to 15 years in prison. Adrian released the defendant after he served five months in a county jail. “The mandatory sentencing range set by the Illinois General Assembly for felony criminal sexual assault is four to 15 years in prison,” Raoul said in a written release announcing his decision to take the case to the Supreme Court. “In addition to the insensitivity to the victim in this case, the judge’s decision to vacate the conviction and call the 148 days Clinton served in county jail ‘plenty of punishment’ demonstrates an abuse of power.” Adrian presided over the three-day bench criminal sexual assault trial of Drew S. Clinton, 19, in October. Clinton

was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl at a graduation party in Quincy on May 30. Adrian found Clinton guilty of one count of criminal sexual assault. But when Clinton returned to court in January, Adrian decided to reverse his own finding of guilt and vacate the conviction. This allowed Adrian to avoid sentencing him to the minimum sentence under Illinois law. He then ordered Clinton to be released from custody. Clinton’s victim was in court and prepared to read a victim impact statement when Adrian made his decision to vacate the conviction and free Clinton. A transcript showed that Adrian criticized the parents where the party was held. “This is what’s happened when parents do not exercise their parental responsibilities, when we have people, adults, having parties for teenagers and they allow coeds and female people to swim in their underwear in their swimming pool,” he said, according to a transcript. Carrie Ward, the executive director for the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault, said Adrian’s statements were victim-blaming and further traumatized the victim. “This was a turn that no one could have predicted,” Ward said. “And it underscores the issues survivors of sexual assault face.” Clinton, who formerly lived in Quincy, turned 18 two weeks before the crime

occurred. He had no previous criminal record. He currently resides in Michigan. During the hearing, Adrian said, “Mr. Clinton has served almost five months in the county jail, 148 days. For what happened in this case, that is plenty of punishment. That would be a just sentence,” according to a court transcript. “This is the first time I have seen a situation like this in the 20 years I have been doing this,” said Daniel S. McConkie Jr., who teaches criminal law at Northern Illinois University School of Law. McConkie said Adrian avoided appellate review by reversing the conviction, instead of imposing a sentence that was less than the mandatory minimum. Adrian said during the hearing that he knew that his decision would be overturned if he did that. That leaves the case to the Supreme Court to force Adrian to impose the sentence prescribed by Illinois law. “It’s an extraordinary remedy to an extraordinary situation,” McConkie said of Raoul’s motion to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court can order public officials, including judges, to follow the laws put into effect by the Illinois General Assembly. Adrian’s handling of the case drew national media attention and an outcry from local and state advocates. The victim appeared on the nationally syndicated television show “Dr. Phil” to talk about the assault. “We are super-glad that the attorney general took this step to try to get some justice for this victim,” Ward said. “And more than that, for the message that this sends to all sexual assault survivors.” Adams County Chief Judge Thomas McCartney reassigned Adrian from the criminal docket to a civil docket last month. But Adrian could also face more challenges. A petition is circulating asking for his recall. On Friday, the petition had more than 102,000 signatures. Adrian was elected to the bench in 2010 with 56 percent of the vote. He won retention, which requires an affirmative vote of 60 percent of the voters, in 2016 with 83 percent of the vote. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden came into office with a plan to fix inflation — just not the particular inflationary problem that the country now faces. His belief is that a cluster of companies control too many industries, which reduces competition for both customers and workers. That leads to higher prices and lower wages in what the White House says is an average cost of $5,000 annually for U.S. families. Biden is now trying to remedy the situation with 72 distinct initiatives — everything from new rules for cell phone repairs to regulations on meatpacking to more merger reviews. “The dynamics of the modern American economy — the increased consolidation and lack of competition — has distorted market incentives in important ways,” said Brian Deese, director of the White House National Economic Council. “The president gave us the direction that he wanted us to come back and say what could we do to address this issue of consolidation across industries in a way that would be durable.” But even administration officials acknowledge that the initiatives outlined by the president’s seven-month-old competition council aren’t designed to quickly stop the 7.5% inflation that’s frustrating Americans and damaging Biden’s popularity. Furthermore, business groups dispute the fundamental premise that competition has faded within the U.S. economy and they are prepared to challenge the administration’s new initiatives in court. “It will strangle economic growth,” said Neil Bradley, executive vice president and chief policy officer of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “Ironically, what this will do is actually lead to more inflation.” Part of Biden’s dilemma is that reorienting a bureaucracy to promote competition takes time, and voters want to see inflation — running at a 40-year peak— start dropping now. Voters feel the bite of inflation with every trip they make to the grocery store or the gas station, yet the president is traveling the country to discuss solutions such as competition and new infrastructure that predate the current predicament and would have a much more gradual impact. America’s current inflation woes stem from the pandemic. Supply chains for computer chips, clothes, furniture and other goods are under stress. At the same time, consumer demand has surged after a historical amount of government aid flowed into the economy. Despite efforts to get the kinks out of the supply chain, price increases have stayed high in recent

months instead of fading as many initial forecasts suggested. That has the Federal Reserve ready to increase interest rates to lower inflation. In a January survey by the University of Chicago, two-thirds of leading economists said that the concentrated power of companies does not explain the current rash of inflation. New York University economist Thomas Philippon has welcomed the administration’s approach — while allowing it would do little to bring down prices. As the author of the 2019 book, “The Great Reversal: How America Gave Up on Free Markets,” Philippon is the source of the administration’s statement that market concentration places a $5,000 drag on an average family. What Philippon observed was that other nations had embraced a level of antitrust enforcement and competition that no longer exists in America, resulting in lower costs for cell phone service, internet and airline tickets in Europe relative to the U.S. “As a way to fight current inflation, it is unlikely to have a big impact in the short term, but it can still be useful,” Philippon said. “I think of it more as a positive side effect of something that should be done in any case.” The Biden administration contends that even if the lack of competition didn’t directly trigger the recent spike in prices, it has contributed to inflation. The White House Council of Economic Advisers blogged in July about how more sectors of the economy are effectively controlled by a smaller number of companies. It cited studies that show how mergers led to higher prices for hospital services, health insurance, airline tickets and beer. It also documented a decline in government reviews of mergers and noted that the 2020 federal lawsuits against Google and, separately, Facebook were the first major monopolization cases in 22 years. After the second meeting of the government-wide competition council in late January, the White House charted its progress. The Food and Drug Administration has proposed selling hearing aids over-the-counter, “lowering their cost from thousands of dollars to hundreds of dollars,” according to a White House statement. The Federal Trade Commission will increase enforcement against restrictions that companies place on people repairing their own electronic devices. The Transportation Department figures it can cut prices of airline tickets in the New York City area by opening up 16 slots to a low-cost carrier at the airport in

Newark, New Jersey. For proof that more competition can lead to lower prices, administration officials cite the example of eyeglasses. Before 1979, people could only buy eyeglasses from doctors who wrote their prescriptions. The FTC then passed a rule that forced doctors to give out prescriptions, causing the average price of glasses to fall 30.4% to $178 (in 1979 dollars). The issue does not break cleanly along partisan lines. Republican Sens. Todd Young of Indiana and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota have sponsored a bill to limit companies from using non-compete agreements, which can keep workers from going to another employer for more money. But many in the business sector dispute Biden’s core premise that the U.S. economy has become less competitive. They argue that mergers allow companies to operate more efficiently and the resulting gains in productivity benefit consumers. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says market concentration had waned by 2017 and it intends to challenge some of the administration’s regulatory actions in court. Airlines for America, a trade association, says that consumers are better off under industry consolidation. In inflation-adjusted terms, it said, the average price of a roundtrip ticket has fallen nearly $100 since 2010 to $306 in 2020. The Business Roundtable, a group representing CEOs, said that at a time of high inflation “more burdensome government regulations are not what the economy or Americans need.” Despite the pandemic and inflation, companies have still found ways to achieve historic profits. Corporate profits after tax equaled 11.8% of the total U.S. economy in the second quarter of last year, the highest share on record going back to 1947. The Biden administration is arguing that government policy can ensure that more of that money goes to workers and customers. The fact that the Biden administration is focused on corporate profits and structure could ultimately limit how much companies can charge and that could deter some inflation, said Barry Lynn, executive director of the Open Markets Institute. “It sends a message,” Lynn said. “Just having cops walking the beat, having cops out there, saying, ‘Hey, we’re watching. We’re looking. We’re going to be checking your profit levels. We’re going to be targeting those who seem to be really exploiting their monopoly power.’ That’s going to have an effect.”

VACCINE PROTESTS

Ontario drops vaccine proof, protests persist BY ROB GILLIES AND TED SHAFFREY ASSOCIATED PRESS

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) – Ontario’s premier announced Monday that Canada’s most populous province will lift its COVID19 proof-of-vaccination requirements in two weeks – not because of the protests that have blocked the border and paralyzed Ottawa, he said, but because “it is safe to do so.” The busiest U.S.-Canada border crossing, meanwhile, was open again Monday after police removed the last of the protesters who had bottled up the Ambassador Bridge for nearly a week in a demonstration against Canada’s virus restrictions. But the larger truck-borne protest in the capital, Ottawa, persisted as city residents seethed over authorities’ inability to reclaim the streets. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that on March 1, the province will drop its requirement that people show proof of vaccination to get into restaurants, restaurants, gyms and sporting events. A surge of cases caused by the omicron variant has crested in Canada. The province will also remove its 50% capacity limit on restaurants on Thursday, four days earlier than planned. Ford gave no timetable for dropping the requirement that people wear masks in public places. “Let me very clear: We are moving in this direction because it is safe to do so. Today’s announcement is not because of what’s happening in Ottawa or Windsor but despite it,” Ford said. Ford said he would support Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government if it proposed further measures to quell the protests. “”We need law and order. Our country is at risk now. It’s not just not happening here in Ottawa, but it’s happening in Alberta and British Columbia,” Ford said. “We won’t accept. it” Trudeau planned to meet virtually with the leaders of Canada’s provinces on Monday morning, as well as with lawmakers. The prime minister has so far rejected calls to use the military but has said “all options are on the table” to end the protests, including invoking the Emergencies Act, which gives the government broad powers to quell unrest. Trudeau has called the protesters a “fringe” of Canadian society. Both federal and provincial politicians have said they can’t order police what to do. Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, said the army should have been deployed after

a week of the Ottawa occupation. “Not invoking it led to the blockade at the Ambassador Bridge and at the ManitobaNorth Dakota border. Protesters there believed that the police would not or could not act,” Wiseman said. An earlier version of the Emergencies Act, called the War Measures Act, was used just once during peacetime, by Trudeau’s late father, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, to deal with a militant Quebec independence movement in 1970. Demonstrations against virus restrictions and other issues have blocked several crossings along the U.S.-Canada border and disrupted the economies of both countries. They also inspired similar convoys in France, New Zealand and the Netherlands. U.S. authorities have said that truck convoys may be in the works in the United States. Police in Windsor, arrested 25 to 30 protesters and towed several vehicles Sunday near the Ambassador Bridge, which links Windsor — and numerous Canadian auto plants — with Detroit. The bridge, which carries 25% of all trade between the two countries, reopened to trac late Sunday night. After protesters began blocking bridge access Feb. 7, automakers began shutting down or reducing production at a time when the industry is already struggling with pandemic-induced shortages of computer chips and other supply-chain disruptions. “Today our national economic crisis at the Ambassador Bridge came to an end,” Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said on Sunday. About 470 miles (750 kilometers) northeast of Windsor, the protest in Ottawa has paralyzed downtown, infuriated residents who are fed up with police inaction and turned up pressure on Trudeau. The city had appeared to have reached a deal in which protesters, who have jammed downtown streets with trucks and other vehicles for more than two weeks, would move out of residential areas and confine their demonstrations to the Parliament Hill area, but those prospects soon faded. In a letter to the protesters, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said residents are “exhausted” and “on edge” because of the demonstrations, and he warned that some businesses are on the brink of permanent closure. “It’s stressful. I feel angry at what’s happening. This isn’t Canada. This does not represent us,” Colleen Sinclair, a counter-protester who lives in Ottawa.

Sinclair said all demonstrators have had their say and need to move on — with police force, if necessary. “They’re occupiers,” she said. “This is domestic terrorism and we want you out of our city. Go home.” While the protesters are decrying vaccine mandates for truckers and other COVID19 restrictions, many of Canada’s public health measures, such as mask rules and vaccine passports for getting into restaurants and theaters, are already falling away as the omicron surge levels o. Pandemic restrictions have been far stricter in Canada than in the U.S., but Canadians have largely supported them. The vast majority of Canadians are vaccinated, and the COVID-19 death rate is one-third that of the United States. A judge on Friday ordered an end to the blockade at the Ambassador Bridge, and Ford declared a state of emergency allowing for fines of 100,000 Canadian dollars and up

to a year in jail for anyone blocking roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer welcomed the end the blockade as “a win for Michigan’s working families who are just trying to do their jobs and for businesses who can get back to shipping their products and produce.” She added: “It’s important to ensure that this does not happen again.” Michigan ocials estimate that 10,000 commercial vehicles cross the bridge each day with $325 million of goods, approximately $50 million from automotive parts. The Windsor protest began to dwindle Saturday after police persuaded many protesters to remove vehicles blocking the road to the bridge. But in Ottawa, Saturday’s crowd swelled to what police said were 4,000 demonstrators, and a counter-protest of frustrated Ottawa residents attempting to block the convoy of trucks from entering downtown emerged Sunday.

Beloit International Film Festival

Beloit International Film Festival Returns to In-Person Screenings By Charles Herbst Contributor

The Beloit International Film Festival is back in person for its 17th Season. The schedule of 136 films has been announced, and is posted on the Festival’s website at www.beloitfilmfest.org. There’s always a special excitement at a live film festival, with filmmakers in attendance, the chance to ask questions, and to experience the power of film. This year, the Festival takes place from Friday, February 25 through Sunday, March 6. While film festivals have proliferated in recent years, BIFF continues to be ranked among the world’s top 100 film festivals and is consistently highly regarded among independent filmmakers for its enthusiastic, informed

audiences and warm hospitality. The Festival focuses on the work of filmmakers from Wisconsin and Illinois, and also presents a diverse international selection of films. Each film at the Festival is locally and carefully screened to offer a wide variety of high-quality comedy, drama, shorts, and documentaries each year to the Greater Beloit community. A few changes have been made for this year’s festival. Tickets will no longer be sold at the door. Tickets may either be purchased online at www.beloitfilmfest.org or in person at the Festival Box Office, 437 E. Grand Ave., telephone (608) 466 9693. If you have a gift certificate, known as a “Bifficate,” you need to exchange it for a ticket either online or at the box office.

Ticket prices remain a very modest $10 for adults, and $5 for students with identification. Some new venues are being used to screen films, but all of this year’s venues (except the Eclipse Center) are in Downtown Beloit and are walkable from each other. Of course, there is plenty of free parking available at each venue. Masks are required this year at all BIFF screenings, regardless of venue. Masks have been generously donated and will be available at the door of each venue. Last year, like many film festivals, BIFF was online. The Festival has decided to try a hybrid model this year. Many, but not all, of the films on offer will also be available online for viewing during the Festival, Feb. 25 through Mar. 6. Each film is $10 and can be viewed once. For those

who are unable to travel to Downtown Beloit or have health concerns, this will be an opportunity to see the films at the Festival from home. In addition to the changes, some things will remain the same: Many local eating and drinking establishments in Beloit will be offering special BIFF After Dark activities and entertainment. The BIFF Sing-a-Long at The Castle, 501 Prospect Ave, will take place on Sat., Feb. 26th at 7:30PM, with doors opening at 6:30. This year, it’s classic tunes from Daydream Believers: The Monkees’ Story. Admission is $10, students $5. A cash bar is available. Costumes are encouraged. This year’s classic film, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, will be shown at the Eclipse Center on March 6th at 2:30PM. Admission is free.

Film Reviews and Screening Times By Charles Herbst Contributor

It’s always difficult to choose among over 100 good films, but I’ve identified several that I believe are both enjoyable and noteworthy. This year, the documentaries seem particularly strong. If any of these are sold out, check with the Festival. Additional screenings are generally added so as to give everyone a chance to see the film. Tickets may be purchased at the box office or online, but, unlike prior years, will not be sold at the door. Seating is open on a first-comefirst-served basis.

BIFF Venues

This year, all of the venues are in or near Downtown Beloit. There are several new ones this year. Everything is in walking distance from each other. Free parking is everywhere.

Formerly a Belgian colony, the Belgian Congo became the Republic of the Congo when it became independent in 1960. After a change in government, it became known as Zaire in 1971. In another change in 1997, it became known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This larger country is often confused with the Republic of the Congo, a smaller, former French colony to its northwest. The Congo has suffered from political instability, corruption and a lack of infrastructure, despite being extremely rich in natural resources. With the country’s rich soils, the Congo could feed 50 percent of the entire world’s population. In this documentary, director Antonio Spano introduces us to several subsistence farmers from various parts of the country, telling us their stories and about their lives. These farmers are credible and empathetic. Spano points out that farmers represent 70 percent of the Congolese population, yet

half the population suffers from moderate acute malnutrition. Amuka is a fine introduction to a country many of us know little about, yet it is a country increasingly critical to our well-being and advanced lifestyle. Fri., Feb. 25, 5PM, IronTek Sun., Feb. 27, 2:30PM, Visit Beloit

Americanish

Rated PG-13. Directed by Iman Zawahry This romantic comedy takes place in Jackson Heights, Queens where two sisters and their newly-arrived cousin from Pakistan are looking for husbands. Through their adventures, they try to stay in the good graces of the family matriarch, Khala (Lillete Dubey). In this coming-of-age story, three young women do a good job of balancing American identity with old-world cultural expectations and values. In making the film, director Iman Zawahry wanted to address the American Muslim perspective, and specifically break down the stereotype that Muslim equals Foreign. What makes this film valuable is a very relaxed, cross-cultural flavor that’s artfully blended with funny situations and laughs. The film gently calls out prejudice without being preachy or alienating the viewer. Zawahry briefly touches on workplace discrimination and

the right of a woman to pursue her own career independent of her husband. She makes a convincing case. Credible performances by the cast, good cinematography and good writing make this film enjoyable to watch. Zawahry wraps it all in positivity and succeeds with this film. Operation Wolf Patrol

Rated PG-13. Directed by Joe Brown Operation Wolf Patrol is a film about the controversial activities in Northern Wisconsin of Rod Coronado, an activist who wants to end wolf hunting in the US. The film also shows bear hunting in Wisconsin and the treatment of hunting dogs by their owners. Hunting is a popular pastime in Wisconsin. At the same time, many believe it inhumane and oppose it. One of the techniques employed by Coronado has been to film hunters while they hunt on public lands. This has led to legislation in the form of “hunter harassment laws” that prohibit photography of the hunters on public land. It is questionable whether such a law is Constitutional. Continued on next page

February 16, 2022 The Rock River Times. CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE The film shows several confrontations in which the film crew (and the crew for this film) has had contentious interactions with hunting parties. With tempers, hunting dogs and firearms involved, some of these incidents have become dangerous. Often law enforcement has been in the middle of these confrontations. Regardless of your position on wolf and bear hunting in Wisconsin, this documentary does a good job of recording the controversy and larger societal cultural gap. Transmission

Rated PG. Directed by Noah Meister Barney (Nate Taylor) is a young man with a dull life that is spent watching television in his “Serling Estates” apartment complex. Unbeknownst to him, his activities are being directed by aliens. Barney discovers a hidden surveillance camera and attempts to escape. We learn that the aliens are attempting to learn about human behavior so that they can infiltrate our planet. This short film is only 9 minutes long, and uses a rather primitive set, somewhat reminiscent of the early Dr. Who episodes. Despite the film’s rather prosaic premise, Transmission captures the viewer’s attention. This film draws you into its story nicely, and we think the director shows promise. Transmission is a good, early attempt from a young filmmaker from Verona, Wisconsin. Meister’s previous work has been shown at the Milwaukee Short Film Festival and the Grindhouse Film Festival in the UK. Part of WI/IL Shorts (1) Fri. The Humongous Fungus Among Us

Rated PG. Directed by Logan Hall While this title suggests science fiction, the fungus is quite real. Located near Copper Falls, Michigan, it is arguably one of the largest and oldest living things in the world. The subject of many news reports when it was discovered, it is believed to be over 32 acres in size and still growing underground. The only visible sign of the fungus are occasional clumps of mushrooms found for a few weeks in the fall. Three aable, if quite-serious scientists have been studying the fungus for years. Using DNA and similar tests, they have been able to determine that this humongous fungus is actually a single organism. A professional paper they published in the 90s on the fungus drew the attention of international news media. Like many small Upper Peninsula towns, Copper Falls has lost much of

its industry. The fungus has been the impetus for an annual Fungus Festival that’s held in the autumn. The Fungus Festival features a giant mushroom pizza, a Mr. Fun-gi contest, and similar fare. Local merchants have distributed t-shirts and other paraphernalia, with a local restaurant featuring a giant fungus burger. The film divides its time between the silly goings on in Copper Falls and a more serious explanation of the fungus. It has a rather dry, humorous aspect, and BIFF has paired the film as a double feature along with Sin Rock--The Story of Johnny Bazooka, a comedic mockumentary based in LaCrosse. Expect to learn something about the fungi along with a few laughs. This film will be screened along with Sin Rock, see below for times

Sin Rock—The Story of Johnny Bazooka

Rated PG. Directed by Sean Klaus This short mockumentary tells of a LaCrosse rock and roll guitar legend; An orphan who raised himself, Johnny was born with one hand twice the size of the other. Despite being having been a huge star, amazingly, no pictures of him or recordings of his music have survived. This Wisconsin tall tale goes on for about half an hour. If you enjoy irony, you’ll love this classic Sconnie humor. Paired with The Humongous Fungus Among Us, the two films will provide an hour and a half of chuckling, if not laughing out loud. Of course, with a room full of Wisconsinites watching the film, lines like “Of course alcohol was involved, this is Wisconsin,” are sure to resonate. For fans of dry humor and dramatic hyperbole, this film will be a favorite. Sat., Feb. 26, 5PM, La Casa Grande Sun., Feb. 27, 12 Noon, Downtown Beloit Association

Darking Way

Rated PG-13. Directed by Zsolt Pozsgai Hungary. Hungarian and Russian with subtitles. This film, based upon a true story, takes place after the failed Hungarian War of Independence in 1848. The leaders of the revolution were sentenced to death and Haynau, one of the leaders of the victorious forces, refuses to grant clemency, despite the entreaties of European royalty and Austria’s key ally, the Russian Tsar. The complex history of the period could probably consume a couple of film reels of its own, but knowing the historical nuances of the period isn’t necessary to enjoy and follow the story. Waiting to be executed, General Ignác Török, was never married and had a one-time lover, Charlotte. Charlotte arrives on the orders of the emperor, along with her husband, Sternberg, on the eve of Török’s execution, to try to save him. Sternberg himself is a high-ranking ocial of the Imperial Court. Haynau refuses to spare Török. Havnau has the daughter of Charlotte and Török brought

to the castle and introduced to Török for the first time. Because Charlotte was already married to Sternberg at the time the daughter was born, the daughter was raised in a boarding school of ill repute. The meeting does not go well, and the episode causes Török to die of a heart attack. His corpse is hung the following morning. For those who are looking for a complicated plot, lots of passion, and a touch of history in their films, this will be as rich a treat as any Hungarian dessert. The film held my interest and left me curious to learn more about the historical background of the time. Sat., Feb. 26, 12 Noon, Domenico’s Sun., Feb. 27, 2:30PM, Downtown Beloit Association

The Alternate

Rated PG-13. Directed by Alrik Bursell We have all wondered if the grass was greener on the other side, and this science fiction film gives us a chance to imagine the possibilities. The film has a relatively simple premise and is not weighted down with complexity. Filmmaker Jake (Ed Gonzalez Moreno) is frustrated working as a freelance videographer, trying to write the screenplay for his film, Space Drive. To support them, his wife, Kris (Natalia Dominguez), works in an optical shop, with her dreams of being an eyeglass designer on hold. One night, while doing a bit of film editing, Jake discovers a portal that allows him to enter an alternate reality. The alternate reality is one where Jake is a quite-successful filmmaker, and has a young daughter. His wife is a successful eyeglass designer. Struggling Jake sneaks around and gets to observe Successful Jake and his family. Ultimately, Struggling Jake tries to trade places. Initially, our sympathies are toward Struggling Jake, but gradually we come to appreciate that Successful Jake is really the good

7

guy. Director Alrik Bursell worked on this film for eight years, and it shows. This is a well-written, well-made film from an experienced director. It should appeal not only to sci-fi bus, but also to others. The Alternate allows us to reflect on our own character and ponder what we would do in such circumstances. Entitlement and shortcuts often come at a price. Fri., Mar. 4, 7:30PM, La Casa Grande Sat., Mar. 5, 7:30PM, Domenico’s Sun., Mar. 6, 2:30PM, Visit Beloit

Fish and Puddle

Rated PG. Directed by Ali Barati Iran. Persian with subtitles. Ali (Amir Reza Faramarzi) is brilliant, mischievous and inventive 12-year-old boy born into a poor family. He makes mistakes, and his daydreaming and inventiveness get him expelled from the best school in town. Ali, despite setbacks, continues to persevere. At 18, the teenage Ali (Baset Razaee) attends a camp for elite students. This time, he is arrested for one of his mistakes, and he loses his place in the elite group. His best girlfriend, Mahboubeh (Mahsa Hashem) helps him from afar as he seeks to build and fly the gyroplane that he designed. With a day job as a clerk, he works on the plane in an abandoned silo and ultimately triumphs over adversity. While the film was otherwise well-done, details in the film were sometimes a bit hard to follow in English. The message, however, was clear. Children should be encouraged and oered the best education possible. It should be ok to fail, and one’s station in life shouldn’t preordain destiny. (A point that should not be lost in our local community as well.) By encouraging geniuses, who knows what could be possible. Sun., Feb. 27, 12 Noon, IronTek Tues., Mar. 1, 5:30PM, Domenico’s

Strawberry Management: Your First Season BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

If you plant new strawberry plants this year, you may need to do some additional steps in order to produce strawberries this season and for years to come. This depends on the type you are planting. As you may recall with our series, day neutral strawberries are a type that would be grown as an annual. They’ll be planted in the spring of 2022, produce strawberries from June to October, and removed in the fall of 2022. You will not overwinter them. Your perennial strawberries are june-bearing. You’ll plant these in 2022 but won’t fully harvest from

them until summer 2023. They will need to overwinter. Strawberry plants should be planted the end of April. You might be able to plant these a couple weeks early but they will do well towards end of April as the soil is beginning to warm. At planting, you should add some compost to your plants. Wait a month before adding any fertilizers as it’s not needed just yet. The first month of growth for any strawberry plant is focused on developing leaves and a good root system. Remove any runners/ flowers that develop in May. Since day neutral strawberries will be grown as an annual, you’ll still be

removing runners throughout the season. The reason for this is that these runners are taking energy away from your day neutral plants. These runners will develop all season long and you’ll want to keep searching for them to remove as you harvest your berries. After removing runners in May of year 1 for june bearing, you want to select 4 runners to develop daughter plants. Think of these as extensions from your main plant but will also create new plants and fill up your physical growing area. These daughter plants should be positioned to create a “box” around the main plant. All other runners throughout the season should be

removed. In this first year, it’s important to remove any flowers that develop as the main purpose of this season is to develop your plants along. As you can imagine, this means that you won’t be getting strawberries this first season. By the fall, your day neutral strawberry plants will be removed. Your june-bearing strawberry plants though will need winter protection to overwinter and finally produce strawberries for you in year 2. Next week, I’ll go into the overwintering and second season of june-bearing. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Food production and energy costs BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL

ILLINOIS RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTORS

We are getting our usual supply of gardening catalogues in the mail. They arrive at a good time to look through them and decide how much gardening and preserving we hope to accomplish this coming growing season. Seeds are appearing in the stores but some people get seeds by swapping them with others. Such practices were common during the depression and World War II. Some also had fruit trees to supplement their diets. Those not interested in gardening or lacking ideal garden space would make bulk purchases of vegetables and fruits to process and store to carry them through the winter. War time limits on sugar supplies led to trading allotments with others not interested in canning. While gardening is still practiced it could be expanded if food shortages and rising food costs stimulate more local gardening and food processing. Those who are not planning to garden could discuss whether friends who do would welcome their assistance. Another option is to join a community supported agricultural project to assure a growing season of supplies. Reliance on local organic growers with sites oering sales of their products can be considered. They provide home grown vegetables, fruits and honey and in some cases meat. Beyond the arrival of garden catalogs’ stimulus to gardening is the rising cost of

food at stores. We will probably continue to face higher food costs for the remainder of the year if not longer. Higher energy costs impact all levels of the existing food systems. Higher energy costs facing farmers, truckers, shippers and airlines will be passed on through the economy to food. Floods, droughts and water shortages also impact food supplies curtailing both local food supplies and those intended to serve regional, national and international markets. Climate change intensifies the risks involved in depending on foods grown in distant places. Locally grown helps cut carbon emissions eliminating the energy used in global transport. The cost and availability of fertilizers and pesticides are also on the rise as they are manufactured using fossil fuels. If shortages persist wheat and corn farmers face increased costs at a time when corn prices have been low. If low prices persist farmers might increase growing soybeans, some of which can be made into tofu. Eating locally grown organic foods is another way to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Beans provide a nutritious food source and grow well in gardens. Many vegetarian diets include beans; we have enjoyed many bowls of soup our daughter made for us in winter. Of course beans are a key ingredient in chili which can be tasty even without the inclusion of meat. A former colleague recently brought his homemade chili to share for dinner. Another friend tests her newly developed

recipes on us before she makes them for others. Such dinner swaps add a new dimension to our social lives. The gardening season can be extended in spring and fall with the use of a hoop house. If properly managed it can grow food in winter. However, they rely on plastic coverings made from fossil fuels which require periodic replacement and are subject to storm damage, adding to the plastic waste disposal issue. Vertical farming strategies provide opportunities for recycling buildings no longer in use or underused. They oer protection from storm and flood damage and can produce throughout the year. Such an eort requires capital and skills for a successful operation and can involve a higher environmental footprint compared to open grown operations. Two area high school teachers and their students made presentations about their indoor gardening at Energy Fairs. One raised tilapia; the other raised vegetables in one tank and fish in a second. Fish fertilized the plants; plants then passed nutrients to the fish. It was an energy saving closed loop. Students developed skills necessary for indoor operations. Some unique approaches to providing locally grown food can be found in Low Tech Magazine. The author harbors doubts about progress and technology and highlights low tech solutions for possible use in today’s society. Articles focus on earlier, less fossil fueled approaches to meeting the needs of society. One article discusses

how brick walls were positioned to capture the heat of the sun to extend the growing season by creating warm microclimates. If the current economic model can no longer be widely sustained due to dwindling energy supplies and increasingly adverse environmental impacts some approaches detailed in Low Tech Magazine could prove beneficial. An individual or a small group could scrutinize the articles and assess their potential use in an energy strained economy needing to address climate change and overshoot. It could provide some social pleasure and fun for a cooperative group focused on environmental and energy solutions.

Learning about Nature

Anyone interested in learning about natural areas or restoring them has an opportunity to have first-hand experience helping a “jewel of Illinois’ ecosystems” – the Sand Ridge Prairie. The Prairie Preservation Society of Ogle County (PPSOC), owner of Sand Ridge, recently received a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to help with stewardship activities at the site. Community members are encouraged to help improve the prairie. This could include seed picking and removing invasive plants, and while they are helping, to learn the names of the plants and their part in the prairie ecosystem. They will also see, first hand, wild animals including deer, badgers, coyotes, foxes, turtles and many birds and insects.
