COVID Update

Pritzker warns Delta variant could dominate in Illinois by fall Central Illinois youth camp outbreak that sickened 85 is being tested for potential variants By Jerry Nowicki

Capitol News Illinois jnowicki@capitolnewsillinois.com

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. JB Pritzker stressed the importance of COVID-19 vaccinations Monday as positivity rates and hospitalizations continued to decline but variants of the virus have proven to be more transmissible and dangerous to those who are not vaccinated. The governor cited a central Illinois youth camp that has led to more than 85 associated COVID-19 cases. The governor said at least one “unvaccinated adult” from the central Illinois camp was hospitalized after the outbreak. According to an Illinois Department of Public Health news release, “although all campers and staff were eligible for vaccination, IDPH is aware of only a handful of campers and staff receiving the vaccine.” While the majority of the linked cases were teens and the perceived risk to youth is often small, IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said in a news release that longterm symptoms can be serious and youth spread can be transferred to those with compromised immune systems. Some attendees of the camp also later attended a nearby conference, leading to 11 more cases of the virus. The outbreaks occurred in Schuyler and Adams counties,

according to a news release. The state health department is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and prevention to handle the outbreak and “is in the process of identifying the presence of any specific variants in this outbreak.” IDPH had identified 9,697 COVID-19 variants in the state as of Monday. That includes 84 instances of the Delta variant, which prompted a high-ranking official at the World Health Organization to warn this week that vaccinated individuals should still be wearing face coverings to protect against community transmission. “Vaccine alone won’t stop the community transmission. …People need to continue to use masks consistently, be in ventilated spaces, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, the physical distance, avoid crowding,” Dr. Mariangela Simao, WHO assistant director-general for access to medicines and health products, said according to transcripts of a news briefing. Pritzker said his administration expects the Delta variant, which has proven more transmissible and dangerous to unvaccinated individuals, “to dominate our cases statewide by the fall.” He and others appeared masked at a news conference in Chicago that was called to celebrate the opening of a business center in the North Lawndale community. He said he was wearing a face covering, even though the state no longer requires one for those who are vaccinated, because he thought it was “appropriate to do so.” “I would say, from my own perspective,

if you’re going into a heavily crowded area, you don’t know if somebody is not vaccinated, and so you should just bring your mask with you and keep safe,” he said of individuals regardless of vaccine status. Pritzker mentioned Israel’s vaccine response, noting the country had high vaccination rates but had recently reinstated indoor mask mandates and other mitigations as the Delta variant spreads. “The lessons here at home and across the world are a harbinger of what could happen here, particularly in low vaccinated areas,” he said. According to IDPH, approximately 53.1 percent of Illinoisans over age 12 were fully vaccinated as of Monday, while that number was 55.7 percent for those 18 and older and 73.7 percent for those 65 and older. For those receiving at least one dose, the numbers were 68.8 percent, 71.3 percent and 89.8 percent, respectively. Still, Pritzker said, that left more than 5 million Illinoisans not fully vaccinated and therefore “unprotected.” Several Illinois counties have vaccination rates under 25 percent. Those include Fayette County at roughly 23 percent in southern Illinois, Henderson County at roughly 21 percent in west-central Illinois, Hamilton County at roughly 24 percent in southern Illinois and five of Illinois’ southernmost counties, Hardin (24.5 percent), Pope (23 percent), Pulaski (22 percent) and Alexander (14 percent). As of Monday, the seven-day rolling average for vaccinations administered daily was 43,219, roughly equal to the pace it was on the day the state announced a $10 million vaccine lottery that will include anyone who has received a shot in the state. The 96,042 doses reported administered Saturday, however, were the most in one day since May 20. While the state’s case positivity rate saw a small uptick of 0.1 percentage points Monday from the day prior on a rolling seven-day average, that number remained near a pandemic low. Hospitalizations also remained near pandemic lows, with 433 patients in hospital beds as of Sunday night, including 108 in intensive care unit beds and 46 on ventilators. While the confirmed death toll has risen to 23,219 since the pandemic began, the state saw fewer than 10 COVID-19-releated deaths for seven of the past eight days as of Monday. Virus Outbreak

Suicidal crises, mental fatigue: Kids grapple with reentry By Lindsey Tanner Associated Press

After two suicidal crises during pandemic isolation, 16-year-old Zach Sampson feels stronger but worries his social skills have gone stale. Amara Bhatia has overcome her pandemic depression but the teen feels worn down, in a state of “neutralness.’’ Virginia Shipp is adjusting but says returning to normal “is kind of unnormal for me.’’ After relentless months of social distancing, online schooling and other restrictions, many kids are feeling the pandemic’s toll or facing new challenges navigating reentry. A surge in teen suicide attempts and other mental health crises prompted Children’s Hospital Colorado to declare a state of emergency in late May, when emergency department and hospital inpatient beds were overrun with suicidal kids and those struggling with other psychiatric problems. Typical emergency-department waiting times for psychiatric treatment doubled in May to about 20 hours, said Jason Williams, a pediatric psychologist at the hospital in Aurora. Other children’s hospitals are facing similar challenges. In typical times, the activities that come as the school year ends — finals, prom, graduations, summer job-seeking — can be stressful even for the most resilient kids. But after more than a year of dealing with pandemic restrictions, many are worn down and simply don’t “have enough in the tank of resilience’’ to handle stresses that previously would have been manageable, Williams said. “When the pandemic first hit, we saw a rise in severe cases in crisis evaluation,’’ as kids struggled with “their whole world shutting down,’’ said Christine Certain, a mental health counselor who works with Orlando Health’s Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. ‘’Now, as we see the world opening back up, ... it’s asking these kids to make a huge shift again.’’ At some children’s hospitals, psychiatric cases have remained high throughout the pandemic; others have seen a more recent surge. At Wolfson Children’ Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, behavioral unit admissions for kids in crisis aged 13 and younger have been soaring since 2020 and are on pace to reach 230 this year, more than four times higher than in 2019, said hospital psychologist Terrie Andrews. For older teens, admissions were up to five times higher than usual last year and remained elevated as of last month.

At Dayton Children’s Hospital in Ohio, admissions to the mental health unit increased by 30% from July 2020 through May, totaling almost 1,300. The hospital doubled the number of available beds to 24 and dropped the minimum age for treatment to 9 years from 12 years, said Dr. John Duby, a hospital vice president. “The overwhelming demand for pediatric mental health services is putting an unprecedented strain on pediatric facilities, primary care, schools and community-based organizations that support kids’ well-being,” said Amy Knight, president of the Children’s Hospital Association. Dr. Alison Tothy, medical director of the pediatric emergency department at the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital, said her ER has seen kids in crisis daily since last year, struggling with suicidal thoughts, cutting and other selfharm behaviors, depression and aggressive outbursts. Kids are stabilized and referred elsewhere for treatment. “Families are coming to us because we are, in some cases, the last resort. Outpatient resources are scarce,’’ and parents say they can’t get an appointment for two months, she said. In Florida, waits for outpatient treatment are even longer and many therapists don’t accept kids insured through Medicaid, Andrews said. At Children’s Hospital Colorado, emergency department visits for behavioral health problems were up 90% in April 2021 over April 2019 and remained high in May. Though the pace slowed in June, hospital authorities are concerned about another spike when school resumes. Williams said issues the hospital is treating are “across the board,’’ from children with previous mental health issues that have worsened to those who never struggled before the pandemic. Like many states, Colorado doesn’t have enough child and teen mental health therapists to meet demand, an issue even before the pandemic, Williams said. Children who need outpatient treatment are finding it takes six to nine months for an appointment. And many therapists don’t accept health insurance, leaving struggling families with few options. Delays in treatment can lead to crises that land kids in the ER. Those who improve after inpatient psychiatric care but aren’t well enough to go home are being sent out of state because there aren’t enough facilities in Colorado, Williams said. Sampson says “just a lot of stuff’’ triggered his first crisis last August. The

Jacksonville, Florida, teen struggled with online education and spent hours in his room alone playing video games and scrolling the internet, drawn to dark sites that “made my brain hurt.’’ He revealed his suicidal thoughts to a friend, who called the police. He spent a week in the hospital under psychiatric care. Both his parents have worked in mental health jobs but had no idea how he was struggling. “We had realized he had been spending more time isolating, not really tending to showering and that type of stuff, but we were in the middle of a pandemic. No one was really doing those things,’’ said his mother, Jennifer Sampson. The teen started virtual psychotherapy but in March his self-destructive thoughts resurfaced. Hospital psychiatric beds were full so he waited a week in a holding area to receive treatment, his mother recalled. Now on mood stabilizers, he’s continuing therapist visits, has finished sophomore year and is looking forward to returning to in-person school this fall. Still, he says it’s hard motivating himself to leave the house to go to the gym or hang out with friends. “I definitely find my social skills are rusty,’’ Sampson said. “I feel that this is going to be something that we’re dealing with for quite a while,’’ his mother said. That’s likely true, too, for those who haven’t reached a crisis point. Bhatia, a 17-year-old self-described “stereotypical introvert’’ with clinical anxiety, also worries about returning to the classroom for senior year. The Oakland, California, teen says the pandemic began as almost a welcome

change. Being social takes effort, and isolation allowed her to recharge. Still, she had bouts of depression, got frustrated with virtual school and missed her friends. She used to be a hugger but has become “a bit more of a germaphobe’’ and says the few times she’s been hugged since social distancing restrictions lifted, she froze. The pandemic has left her worn down, “like running a marathon, and I’m finally reaching the end and I’m just getting so tired at this point.’’ “I think I don’t have the energy for happiness,’’ she said. For 18-year-old Shipp, also of Oakland, the pandemic hit in her senior year as she was planning a trip to Europe and anticipating college in the fall. Neither happened and she described 2020 as a year of negative thinking, stuck in her room alone with her thoughts. “I felt depressed and anxious and very scared for the future,’’ she said. As a Black woman, she wanted to join marchers protesting George Floyd’s murder but decided close contact with strangers was too risky. She doesn’t know anyone who got very sick or died, but says she worried about COVID-19 “every single day.’’ Shipp used meditation to help relieve stress. She recently got vaccinated and learned college at Cal Poly in Pomona will be in person in the fall. But she’s not sure she’s completely ready. “It’s still a little weird because now, all of a sudden ... you don’t need to wear the mask? It’s like jumping into the water too fast,’’ Shipp said. “The normalcy is kind of unnormal for me.’’

Fears aside, no mass exodus from collapsed building’s twin BY TERRY SPENCER AND RUSS BYNUM ASSOCIATED PRESS

SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) – About a block from the Miami-area beachfront condominium tower that collapsed sits its sister building, July 1 erected a year later by the same company, using the same materials and a similar design. It has faced the same tides and Ad A salty air. July 2 1 COL x 3” This has made some residents of Champlain Towers North worried enough to leave, though most have remained, saying they are confident their almost 40-year-old, July 3 12-story building is better maintained. They say their building doesn’t have the same problems with cracking in support beams and in the pool area that 2018 engineering July 4 reports show the south tower had. The collapse of Champlain Towers South in the town of Surfside on Thursday has New vendors welcome! drawn attention to older high-rise buildJuly 5 ings throughout South Florida and promptVendor reservations not required! ed Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Get the latest weather updates at Cava to order a 30-day audit of whether Vendor setup: 9am to 3pm such buildings under her jurisdiction are RockRiverTimes.com/AccuWeather complying with a required recertification of structural integrity at 40 years. She said she wants any issues raised by inspections to be immediately addressed. She’s also urged municipalities within the county to follow suit. Miami, for example, has launched a 45-day audit of buildings six stories and higher that are 40 years old or older. Inspectors performed a quick-hit examination of the north building and Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said nothing was found that indicates the tower is in danger of collapse. That didn’t reassure everyone. “I’m petrified of returning,” said Rebecca Weinstock, a snowbird who bought a sixth-floor condo in the north building four years ago with her husband. She is in New York, where she was when the south tower collapsed early Thursday, killing at least 11 people and leaving 150 missing. While she agrees the north building is well maintained, she said that’s not enough to satisfy her that it’s completely safe. It was completed in 1982, one year after the south tower, and built by the same developer, Nathan Reiber, through his firm, Nattel Construction. The possibility that the collapse was caused by a design or construction flaw means she won’t be returning anytime soon. “I am out my investment, I am out my apartment, I am out my future, but we are talking about lives here,” she said. The only way she’ll return, she said, is if two independent engineers – not from South Florida – agree it’s safe. North tower residents who want to temporarily relocate are being oered

federal assistance, just as survivors from the south tower are. But most residents interviewed Monday are taking the position of Philip and Nora Zyne, who are staying put in their fifth-floor condo. The Zynes bought their condo 12 years ago, and have lived there full time for six. They have several friends and acquaintances who lived in the south tower and remain missing. “I’ve never seen any major structural issues” in the north building, said Philip Zyne, an attorney. “I’m not worried at all right now. I do want to get a full structural engineering and forensic examination done.” Zyne said he’s seen numerous inspectors in his building since the collapse, and only a small number of people packing up to go. “It’s not a mass exodus by any means. I’d say maybe a quarter of the building has left,” he said. Salomon Gold, who spent 10 years as the condo association president for the north tower and 20 on the board, is convinced the building is safe, saying he and the other board members never skimped on maintenance. He compared the building collapse to airplanes: Just because one crashes doesn’t mean others of that same make and model will. “We are in good shape,” said Gold, 89.

The current condo association president, Naum Lusky, declined comment Monday. Surfside Mayor Burkett said a deepdive inspection of the north tower will be conducted Tuesday by an engineering firm hired by the residents. The town will inspect other older buildings soon. Given the results of the preliminary examination of the north tower, he said he doesn’t see a reason to order an evacuation. Still, he said, he’s not sure he would stay there. “If you asked me if I wanted to spend the night in that building, I’d be a little ... I wouldn’t be willing to do that until we went through it,” he said. Esther Drachman and her husband aren’t taking any chances. Drachman’s 91-yearold mother-in-law lives in the north tower. “My mother-in-law is bedridden, so we took her out and brought her to our house,” Drachman said. “We just felt like we couldn’t get her out in five minutes” if a rapid evacuation became necessary. Drachman said her mother-in-law wasn’t worried or very aware of the details of the disaster. She said she and her husband are waiting to see if a thorough inspection turns up any problems. “We’ll see if that building’s fine,” Drachman said. “And if it is, we’ll put her back in.”

2024 ELECTION

‘It definitely feels early’: GOP’s long race to 2024 begins WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — In the past week alone, Nikki Haley regaled activists in Iowa, Mike Pence courted donors in California and Donald Trump returned to the rally stage, teasing a third campaign for the White House. The midterms are more than a year away, and there are 1,225 days until the next presidential election. But Republicans eyeing a White House run are wasting no time in jockeying for a strong position in what could emerge as an extremely crowded field of contenders. The politicking will only intensify in the coming weeks, particularly in Iowa, home to the nation’s leado presidential caucuses and a state where conservative evangelicals play a significant role in steering the direction of the GOP. Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas is slated to visit on Tuesday, and others, including Pence, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are expected to appear in July. The flurry of activity is a sign that there is no clear frontrunner to lead the GOP if Trump opts against a 2024 campaign. “It definitely feels early, but it doesn’t feel like it’s a bad idea based on the situation,” said Mike DuHaime, a longtime Republican strategist. “The party has changed, the voters are changing and I think the process has changed. And I think many of the candidates have realized that.” For now, a central question in Republican politics is whether Trump, who continues to advance lies about his loss last year to Joe Biden, will run again. The former president has said he will make a decision after next year’s midterms. In the meantime, he faces mounting legal vulnerabilities, including the potential that prosecutors in Manhattan may file criminal charges against his company as soon as this week. Trump is also under investigation by a district attorney in Georgia for attempting to pressure elections ocials to change results in his favor. Still, Trump, who left oce in January under the cloud of impeachment for inciting a riot at the U.S. Capitol, is flirting with a political future. Returning to the rally stage last weekend for the first time as a private citizen, Trump looked every bit the candidate as an enthusiastic crowd of thousands in Ohio chanted, “Four more years!” “We won the election twice,” he said. “And it’s possible we’ll have to win it a third time.” The specter of Trump has been especially challenging for Republicans like Pence.

As a conservative evangelical Christian who was Trump’s unflinchingly loyal vice president, Pence would seem appealing to many of the party’s activists. But his decision to follow the constitutional process and certify Biden’s win angered many in the GOP. Though he still heaps praise on Trump’s accomplishments, Pence has worked more recently to forge his own identity, splitting with his former boss in particular over the severity of the deadly Jan. 6 riot, which forced him into hiding but which many Republicans have sought to minimize. That balancing act came into sharp relief Thursday as Pence delivered a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 800 people during a swing through California that included meetings with donors and a headline speech at a Republican National Committee dinner. After being booed and jeered the week before at a conservative conference in Florida, Pence appeared to have a newfound sense of swagger as he delivered his strongest rebuttal to date of Trump’s continued insistence that he could have unilaterally overturned the results of the last election. Many of Trump’s supporters continue to blame Pence for Trump’s loss, even though he had no power to overturn the results. “The truth is, there’s almost no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president,” Pence said, adding that he would “always be proud that we did our part, on that tragic day, to reconvene the Congress and fulfill our duty under the Constitution and the laws of the United States.” It’s been a similar tightrope act for Haley, Trump’s former ambassador to the United Nations and a former governor of South Carolina, who sharply criticized Trump after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot but has since largely avoided the subject. At a Thursday dinner during a threeday swing across Iowa, Haley presented herself to about 500 Republican activists as a next-generation conservative figure. Like Pence, Haley spent much of her speech praising Trump’s time in oce and sharing anecdotes of her work with him that lit chuckles throughout the hall, while ignoring the deadly siege at the Capitol as well as Trump’s monthslong campaign to cast doubt on the outcome of the 2020 election, even though there is no evidence of the widespread fraud he alleges. “I saw firsthand as ambassador to the United Nations that Donald Trump put America first, sometimes in the most

interesting of ways,” she said. Haley was also the guest on a popular conservative radio talk show Friday and headlined fundraisers for statehouse and county leaders, including Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. “There are a lot of reasons why I love Iowa,” she said. “But maybe the biggest reason is that Iowa loves to elect badass Republican women.” The activity is not surprising to activists in the states that will ultimately have first say in picking their party’s candidates. “It takes a while to court states like New Hampshire and Iowa,” said Greg Moore, the New Hampshire state director of Americans for Prosperity, a conservative political advocacy group founded by the Koch brothers. “And it’s fine and dandy if you’re President Trump and you have a prebuilt infrastructure in the state and just have to turn the key. But for everyone else, you have to build that.” So far, polls and interviews suggest voters are a long way from picking favor-

ites, though Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is frequently mentioned as a possible Trump successor. He is notably one of the few leading Republicans who has yet to visit Iowa this year. At last week’s GOP event in California, retiree Bob Egbert, 75, praised Trump but doubted a third run would be good for the party. Egbert likes what he sees in DeSantis and considered Pence’s low-key personality as a liability with voters. “I think he would be a nice, bland candidate,” said Egbert, a Republican. “I don’t think that’s what we need.” Former California Gov. Pete Wilson, a Republican, predicted a “spirited contest” in 2024, but declined to identify a favorite among the emerging candidates. As for Trump? “It is, after all ... his decision. It’s a decision he shares with his family,” Wilson said. “He is much admired. It’s obvious from what has occurred he is much feared and demonized by this (Biden) administration.”

ROCKFORD – On Sunday, July 11th from 1-4:00 pm, the Irish Gallery of the Ethnic Heritage Museum will honor Retired Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea as the Irish Man of the Year. He was chosen for the combination of his pride in his Irish heritage and his impact during his 32 year career in law enforcement. Emerald Wind will play harp and flute music with a Celtic flavor starting at 2 pm and a brief presentation will begin at 2:30 pm. Chief O’Shea’s distinguished career in public service started in Addison as a police officer for 9½ years, continued in Elgin for 17½ years where he reached the leadership level of Commander, and completed in Rockford as Chief of Police. Chief O’Shea’s approach to policing has emphasized community engagement, including increased involvement in

community events such as Rockford’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. Dan is proud of his Irish heritage. Dan’s paternal grandfather Patrick Joseph O’Shea was born in County Kerry in the town of Muckross and in 1908 he immigrated to the United States, where he became a Chicago cop and rose to the level of Commander in the Chicago Police Department. Dan’s paternal grandmother was Kathleen Moriarty. Because of the closeness of his Irish ancestry, Dan is eligible for and plans to apply for dual Irish citizenship. Dan was born in Chicago as part of the South Side Irish community. He graduated from DePaul University. He played rugby in college and after college with the South Side Irish Rugby Football Club. Dan is a member of Rockford’s Irish Marching Society and has worn his kilt in many Irish parades, including in Chicago and Rockford. He has traveled to Ireland and is planning to go again soon.

Carnivorous plants exhibit open at Nicholas Conservatory From Rockford Park District

Rockford Park District’s Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, 1354 N. 2nd St., Rockford, IL, invites the community to explore the bizarre and captivating world of carnivorous plants at a new exhibit, Savage Gardens: The Real and Imaginary World of Carnivorous Plants, on display through November 7, 2021. Visitors can immerse themselves in this unique world, learn about the plants’ delicate environments and how they developed their unique adaptations, plus experience larger-than-life interactive sculptures that provide a “bug’s eye” view of these unique flora. The exhibit features three large mixed-media sculptures from Tork Industrial ARTifacts, Inc., a company based in Columbus, Ohio (http://www.torkworks. com/savage.html). The sculptures are large versions of various meat-eating plants, two of which are interactive, and fun for all ages. Accompanying the exhibit is a

selection of large hand-painted canvases, each featuring a species of carnivorous plant painted in a dark and quirky circus sideshow style. There will also be multiple display areas featuring dozens of species of carnivorous plants, including Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, trumpet plants, butterworts, sundews, and more. Since many carnivorous plants are quite small, there will be feature areas where visitors can get a closeup view of these amazingly adapted plants. Throughout the exhibit months, the Conservatory’s programming will feature carnivorous plant-related themes; the theme will also be featured at the Conservatory’s Garden Gate Gift Store, where whimsical and educational carnivorous plant-themed items will be available, as well as carnivorous plants for sale. In the Conservatory lobby, visitors can view a unique art display, All You Can Eat: A Carnivorous Plant Buffet, which features

drawings by ten local tattoo artists. Guests are asked to pre-purchase admission tickets for a specific date and time at nicholasconservatory.com/tickets, since walk-up admission availability cannot be guaranteed. More information about the exhibit, as well as information on Nicholas Conservatory and its hours, admission fees, programs, events, exhibits, and rentals is at www.nicholasconservatory.com. For information on accessibility for visitors with disabilities and special needs, call 815-987-8858. Safety has been and will continue to be a top priority for the Rockford Park District. 2021 4th of July Cheat Sheet By Jack Zuba Rockford Area CVB

Believe it or not, the 4th of July is just over a week away! In my eyes, the 4th always symbolizes the heart of summertime, which means it’s time to take a day or two and enjoy yourself with friends and family! This year, just like any other year, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the holiday in the Rockford area. Regardless of how you like to spend the holiday weekend, there are plenty of events fit for different celebration styles. Here’s a rundown on a few events you might want to check out!

Let’s Get Active

If you’re a morning person and enjoying getting a good workout in to start your day, then you’re in luck. This year, you can participate in the Lifescape 4th of July Classic Run/Walk. Whether you’re an experienced runner or you just want to get out and have some fun with the family, this is the race for you. Lifescape is giving racers the choice of running an 8k, a 2-mile, or participating in the 1-mile family fun walk. This event is a wonderful way to support a local nonprofit and celebrate our country, very fitting for the 4th of July. Following the race, participants are invited to the Downtown Rockford City Pavilion to enjoy all you can eat pancakes! All proceeds will benefit Lifescape’s programs and services.

Fireworks

It wouldn’t be the full 4th of July experience without seeing some fireworks! There are a few different spots to watch the firework show this year in the downtown area. In previous years, viewing the firework show somewhere along the river has been a personal favorite of mine. There are plenty of spots to meet with friends and family and enjoy the 30-minute show. A few

Fireworks over Downtown Rockford spots include the Chestnut Street Bridge, State Street Bridge, Davis Park, Embassy Suites (reservations required), and more! If you plan on spending most of the day on the river, making a stop at the docks of the Prairie Street Brewhouse would be a great place to enjoy some dinner, drinks, and the fireworks! Don’t come too late though, I’m sure there won’t be many open dock slots around the start of showtime. The firework show will be synchronized to a soundtrack filled with patriotic, love, and unity themed music. And by the way, this isn’t your average backyard firework show. Multi award winning pyro company, Melrose Pyrotechnics, will oversee all fireworks this year. Melrose Pyrotechnics is considered one of the most premier pyrotechnics companies in the entire United States! Most shells will explode to the size of 2 football

fields wide and up to 800 feet in the air! If you’re in the downtown area, you can’t miss this show (literally).

The Main Event

Concerts are back! If there’s one thing to get excited about this summer, I’d say it’d be for the Long Play music fest at the Rockford Rivets Stadium! Star Events has spent the last 18 months putting together an event featuring more than 20 bands. From July 1st to the 4th there will be live entertainment at the Rivets stadium from 12pm – 10pm. This is a great opportunity to get away from your busy work life and enjoy some time with your friends or family. Some of the best restaurants in the area will also be in attendance, grilling up your favorites. There will also be a carnival with multiple

rides and games to play. Most importantly, Rockford’s very own, Cheap Trick will be here! On the final day of the event (July 4) Cheap Trick will take the stage starting at 8pm. Following their performance, there will also be a firework show starting at 10pm to ensure everybody gets the proper 4th of July experience! If you’ve never had the chance to see one of their concerts in person, this is a great opportunity! Great bands, great food and drink, and a great time. You won’t want to miss out! There’s so much to do in the Rockford area this year for the 4th of July. Whatever it is you decide to do, I hope you enjoy yourself and stay safe and healthy! Cabbage worms BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

While our area received some much needed rain last week and this week, it has coincided with a peak of insect damage I have been noticing for now two weeks. In my family’s garden, many of the cabbage family members I grow such as collards, cauliflower and kale have large holes on their leaves and heavy defoliation. With the appearance of white butterflies in the garden, I knew that the culprit was the cabbage worm. There are three different cabbage worms including the cabbage looper,

imported cabbageworm, and diamondback moth larva. All of these worms are light green in color and cause similar damage. They are very easy to identify once you know what you are looking for. They tend to be on the largest leaves of the plant but may target new leaves just starting to emerge. Adults are the white butterflies that you see in your vegetable garden currently. They lay reddish-orange eggs on the underside of the leaves where the green worms hatch and begin eating. Though the name ‘cabbage worm’ may make you think it solely targets cabbage,

it actually will go after all members of the cole family including kale, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and others. If you are growing a mixture of these, you may see that some are eaten more than others. Anecdotally, I notice that my collards are receiving the heaviest damage. Control for these worms can be tricky. Hand-removal can be easy but there may be 3 populations this growing season and you may be removing these daily until the end of July. You could squish the worms on the leaves too. Row cover could be a good option. It is

like a mosquito net that creates a barrier between the plant and insects. The plants still receive sunlight and water. Because the cabbage family does not need pollination, the row cover could stay permanent until you are ready to harvest. You may still need to remove the row cover to hand-remove these insects. Chemical control is available though want to ensure you choose the right product. Some of these products will be consumed by the worm while others will need to be applied directly onto the worms. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Escape from the indoors and screens into the outdoors BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL CONTRIBUTORS

After spending the last year and a half isolated at home, it is time to head to the outdoors and reconnect with nature. The natural world has been home for humans over their long history on the planet. Our brains were wired to survive in the outdoors but with modern living many of us are no longer personally connected to nature. This leaves us oriented toward to short term needs and wants with limited regard to long term consequences. Our minds have been captured by the toys of modern living which distract us from seeing the natural elements surrounding us and impacting our lives. We have become people of the screens – tv, cell phones, movies and videos have captured our attention and separate us from seeing the beauty around us. We can live in the bubble of screens and use vehicles that take us from one building to another seeking comfort and convenience and giving little thought to how our disconnect from nature impacts our wellbeing and that of the natural environment. Not only do we give little thought to the natural world but many of us have come to believe it has little impact on our lives. We tend to know nature in terms of something to manipulate and use to fulfill our desires as if there are no adverse consequences to the environment and to us. So far those

who document the adverse consequences have diculty convincing others including our political and business leaders of the necessity of taking appropriate action now to address long term environmental degradation. The 1970’s book The Limits to Growth laid out the potential consequences of ongoing economic growth on the health of the planet. We are personally connected to nature both in mind and body. We pay attention to extreme weather conditions and generally prefer warm weather as demonstrated by population growth in southern states. The human body responds to sunshine by producing vitamin D which provides benefits to human wellbeing, boosts our immune systems and our moods. But too much sun is known to produce cancer. Studies, collecting data from millions of children, have proved that those who spend time outdoors are happier and both physically and mentally healthier than those who do not. They also grow up to become happier adults with fewer mental health problems than the nature deprived. Many of these studies have been performed by Danish and Japanese researchers. As a result, the Japanese have added more green spaces to their environments (Web M.D.). In the US, outdoor education has grown once again; even recess has been reinstated in school schedules.

Although we Intuitively feel better in natural surroundings, spending time in a woodland or simply a tree lined city block results in lower blood pressure and heart rate and a general feeling of well-being for adults. People are found to be more positive and caring when surrounded by green spaces. Being exposed to nature can help with the grieving process (Web M.D.). A green plant on a balcony can help the outlook of someone surrounded by concrete. Time in the outdoors has been prescribed for adults with mental or physical problems. During our travels in Europe it was common to see people seated outdoors facing the sun with their eyes closed to feel the warmth of the sun and capture some vitamin D. There are numerous opportunities to enjoy and benefit by being outdoors. It may be as close as the backyard, a nearby park, nature preserve, forest preserve or ecological restoration. Take a look at sunrises and sunsets to appreciate their beauty. Lean back on a chair or lie on the ground and watch the clouds float by or the stars in the sky. There are many organizations that oer outdoor resources and activities such as local park districts, nature centers, outdoor education facilities, state parks, forest preserves and restored natural areas including prairie, woodland and wetland restorations. They welcome those who

volunteer to assist in restoring a natural area or in the operation of the facility. People are social creatures and volunteering provides for social interactions. For example, The Rock River Trail Initiative has a series of trails for public use including a national water trail, scenic and historic road route, wine and beer trail, chocolate trail, birding trail, history trail, biking route, hiking route, horse trail, air route and art route. They provide opportunities to enjoy the outdoors with others who have similar interests. Trail use can include traveling short portions or the full route through Wisconsin and Illinois. Some people have already completed both the full national water trail and the hiking trail and gained recognition for their accomplishments. But short portions of the trail system can enhance local recreational opportunities with an emphasis on experiences in the outdoors. The Rock River originates in Horicon, Wisconsin, and winds its way through Illinois to Rock Island where it joins the Mississippi River. Maps on the website rockrivertrail.com and signs along the way guide the experience. Trail headquarters are in the visitor center, Nature at The Confluence, 306 Dickop Street, South Beloit, IL. Reconnect with nature and human nature.

Horoscope TAURUS, GEMINI AND CANCER

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK:

ARIES Whether you’re on vacation or not, time spent at home will ine vitably allow you to relax and let your mind wander. Consider diving into a new TV series to escape reality for a while. TAURUS You’ll be very chatty this week, but it may be hard to direct the conversation. At times, you might let slip a few secrets or details you would have preferred to keep to yourself. GEMINI Choosing quality materials for a renovation isn’t just a luxury; it’s a smart longterm investment. Don’t hesitate to make your house feel like a home, and de sign it according to your style. CANCER While on a trip, attending a con ference, at a training or even during therapy, you could meet someone captivating. This per son will help you experience new things and get rid of some deep seated emotions. LEO A simple “I love you” isn’t enough; you need more concrete proof of love. Your partner must make you hope and dream. Fortunately, they have something romantic planned. VIRGO If you have a vacation coming up, there’s no need to stay coo ped up inside. Plan a trip abroad with friends and family, or take a long road trip so you can get away from it all.
