State Fair
State Fair to reopen with new attractions, indoor mask mandate Officials hope for big crowds after one-year interruption By Peter Hancock
Capitol News Illinois phancock@capitolnewsillinois.com
SPRINGFIELD – After a one-year interruption last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Illinois State Fair in Springfield is set to reopen Thursday, Aug. 12, with some new attractions and new safety requirements. Among the new requirements, Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II said during a media briefing Friday, will be a mask mandate at all indoor venues. “It’s important for fairgoers to know that we will be following (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines,” Costello said. “So what that means is masks will be required indoors. This includes the following buildings: the Coliseum, Expo Building, the Illinois Building, the Dairy Building, the Livestock Center, Artesian Building, Emerson Building, and the Orr Building. Again, masks will be required when indoors.” For those who arrive without masks but who plan to attend indoor events, free masks will be available at all entry gates, he said.

And while it won’t be required, officials also are strongly encouraging fairgoers to wear masks in large gatherings, including the Twilight Parade, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Other safety measures being taken include extra hand washing stations throughout the fairgrounds, cleaning of high-touch areas, and foggers on carnival rides and grandstand seating. There will also be free vaccinations available at six locations on the fairgrounds. State officials were forced to cancel the fair last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the first time the fair had been called off since World War II. But with vaccines now widely available, and with nearly 60 percent of the state’s population over age 12 now fully vaccinated as of Friday, according to IDPH, officials said they feel comfortable the fair can go off safely this year. “I think people are just done,” Illinois State Fair manager Kevin Gordon said. “I mean, they’re tired of sitting around for a year and they’re wanting to get out. Again, we emphasize and we encourage that everyone get vaccinated to come out. But we’ll make certain that everyone out here, when they do show up, will have a safe and have a fun time.” The first major event of the fair actually happens Wednesday with the unveiling

of this year’s butter cow. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the butter cow, a life-size display sculpted out of real butter that is typically fashioned around a timely theme. Masks will be required in the Dairy Building where the cow is housed. Gates to the fair officially open at 7 a.m. Thursday. Gov. JB Pritzker will join Costello and other state and local dignitaries for a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. That will be followed by the Twilight parade at 5 p.m. Among the new attractions this year is a tribute to Route 66, which stretched nearly 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, winding its way through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and southern California. This year marks the 95th anniversary of the establishment of that highway, one of the original roadways of the U.S. highway system. The “Route 66 Experience” at the fairgrounds will allow visitors to walk through exhibits commemorating the Illinois portion of the highway from Chicago to the Chain of Rocks Bridge and learn about communities and attractions along the route. The fair will also feature 13 stages with free entertainment ranging from live music to pig races, a water circus in which acrobats perform 40 feet above the top of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and an assortment of sword swallowers, fire breathers and escape artists. Grandstand shows this year include country music performers Toby Keith, Kane Brown and Sammy Hagar; comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias; a Neil Diamond tribute band called the Traveling Salvation Show; a night of 90s music with Vanilla Ice and other artists; George Thorogood and others. Masks will be required for all grandstand concerts, and those in the grandstand track standing room only section will be required to provide a print or digital copy of vaccination records or a negative COVID-19 test result within three days prior to the event. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigning over sexual harassment BY MARINA VILLENEUVE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation Tuesday over a barrage of sexual harassment allegations in a fall from grace a year after he was widely hailed nationally for his detailed daily briefings and leadership during the pandemic’s peak. In a televised address, the 63-year-old Democrat emphatically denied intentionally showing any disrespect toward women but said that fighting back against what he called the “politically motivated” attack on him would subject the state to months of turmoil, and “I cannot be the cause of that.” “The best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to government,” Cuomo said. The three-term Democratic governor’s decision, which will take eect in two weeks, was announced as momentum built in the Legislature to remove him by impeachment. It came after New York’s attorney general released the results of an investigation that found Cuomo sexually harassed at least 11 women. Investigators said he subjected women to unwanted kisses; groped their breasts or buttocks or otherwise touched them inappropriately; made insinuating remarks about their looks and their sex lives; and created a work environment “rife with fear and intimidation.” Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, a 62-year-old Democrat and former member of Congress from the Bualo area, will become the state’s 57th governor and the first woman to hold the post. The #MeToo-era scandal cut short not just a career but a dynasty: Cuomo’s father, Mario Cuomo, was governor in the 1980s and ‘90s, and the younger Cuomo was often mentioned as a potential candidate for president, an oce his father famously contemplated seeking. Even as the scandal mushroomed, Cuomo was planning to run for reelection in 2022. Cuomo still faces the possibility of criminal charges, with a number of prosecutors around the state moving to investigate him. The string of accusations that spelled the governor’s downfall began to unfold in news reports last December and went on for months. Cuomo called some of the allegations fabricated, forcefully denying he touched anyone inappropriately. But he acknowledged making some aides uncomfortable with comments he said he intended as
playful, and he apologized for some of his behavior. He portrayed some of the encounters as misunderstandings attributable to “generational or cultural” dierences, a reference in part to his upbringing in an aectionate Italian American family. As a defiant Cuomo clung to oce, state lawmakers launched an impeachment investigation, and nearly the entire Democratic establishment in New York deserted him – not only over the accusations, but also because of the discovery that his administration had concealed thousands of COVID-19 deaths among nursing home patients. The harassment investigation ordered up by the attorney general and conducted by two outside lawyers corroborated the women’s accounts and added lurid new ones. The release of the report left the governor more isolated than ever, with some of his most loyal supporters abandoning him and President Joe Biden joining those calling on him to resign. His accusers included an aide who said Cuomo groped her breast at the governor’s mansion. Investigators also the governor’s sta retaliated against one of his accusers by leaking confidential personnel files about her. As governor, Cuomo touted himself as an example of a “progressive Democrat” who gets things done: Since taking oce in 2011, he helped push through legislation that legalized gay marriage, began lifting the minimum wage to $15 and expanded paid family leave benefits. He also backed big infrastructure projects, including airport overhauls and construction of a new bridge over the Hudson River that he named after his father. At the same time the behavior that got him into trouble was going on, he was publicly championing the #MeToo movement and surrounding himself with women’s rights activists, signing into law sweeping new protections against sexual harassment and lengthening the statute of limitations in rape cases. His national popularity soared during the harrowing spring of 2020, when New York became the epicenter of the nation’s coronavirus outbreak. His tough-minded but empathetic response made for riveting television well beyond New York, and his stern warnings to people to stay home and wear masks stood in sharp contrast to President Donald Trump’s brush-o of the virus.
His briefings won an international Emmy Award, and he went on to write a book on leadership in a crisis. But even those accomplishments were soon tainted when it was learned that the state’s ocial count of nursing home deaths had excluded many patients who had been transferred to hospitals before they succumbed. A Cuomo aide acknowledged the administration feared the true numbers would be “used against us” by the Trump White House. Also, Cuomo’s administration was fiercely criticized for forcing nursing homes to accept patients recovering from the virus. The U.S. Justice Department is investigating the state’s handling of data on nursing home deaths. In addition, the state attorney general is looking into whether Cuomo broke the law in using members of his sta to help write and promote his book, from which he stood to make more than $5 million. The governor had also increasingly come under fire over his rough and sometimes vindictive treatment of fellow politicians and his own sta, with former aides telling stories of a brutal work environment. Cuomo has been divorced since 2005 from the author and activist Kerry Kennedy, a member of the Kennedy family, and was romantically involved up until 2019 with TV lifestyle personality Sandra Lee. He has three adult daughters. During his resignation speech, he directly addressed his daughters, saying: “I want them to know, from the bottom of my heart: I never did, and I never would, intentionally disrespect a woman or treat a woman dierently than I would want them treated. Your dad made mistakes. And he apologized. And he learned from it. And that’s what life is all about.” He gained political experience early on as his father’s hard-nosed and often ruthless campaign manager, and went on to become New York attorney general and U.S. housing secretary under President Bill Clinton before getting elected governor in 2010. New York has seen a string of high-level political figures brought down in disgrace in recent years. Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in 2008 in a call-girl scandal. Rep. Anthony Weiner went to prison for sexting with a 15-year-old girl. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman stepped down in 2018 after four women accused him of abuse. And the top two leaders in the Legislature were convicted of corruption.

Infrastructure
Big win for $1T infrastructure bill: Senate shows it can act By Lisa Mascaro Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — With a robust vote after weeks of fits and starts, the Senate approved a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan on Tuesday, a rare coalition of Democrats and Republicans joining to overcome skeptics and deliver a cornerstone of President Joe Biden’s agenda. The 69-30 tally provides momentum for this first phase of Biden’s “Build Back Better” priorities, now headed to the House. A sizable number of lawmakers showed they were willing to set aside partisan pressures, eager to send billions to their states for rebuilding roads, broadband internet, water pipes and the public works systems that underpin much of American life. Infrastructure was once a mainstay of lawmaking, but the weeks-long slog to strike a compromise showed how hard it has become for Congress to tackle routine legislating, even on shared priorities. “There’s been detours and everything else, but this will do a whole lot of good for America,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The outline for Biden’s bigger $3.5 trillion package is next up for the Senate — a more liberal undertaking of child care, elder care and other programs that is much more partisan and expected to draw only Democratic support. That debate is expected to extend into the fall. Tuesday’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act started with a group of 10 senators who seized on Biden’s campaign promise to draft a scaled-down version of his initial $2.3 trillion proposal, one that could more broadly appeal to both parties in the narrowly divided Congress, especially the 50-50 Senate. It swelled to a 2,700-page bill backed by the president and also business, labor and farm interests. It drew an expansive alliance of senators and a bipartisan group in the House. In all, 19 Republicans joined all Democrats in voting for Senate passage. Vice President Kamala Harris, as presiding officer, announced the final tally. While liberal lawmakers said the package doesn’t go far enough as a down-payment on Biden’s priorities and conservatives said it is too costly and should be more fully paid for, the coalition of centrist senators was able to hold. Even broadsides from former President Donald Trump could not bring the bill down. “This infrastructure bill is not the perfect bill,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski,
R-Alaska, one of the negotiators. She said the senators kept at it, believing, “It’s better to get some of what our constituents want rather than none of it.” The measure proposes nearly $550 billion in new spending over five years in addition to current federal authorizations for public works that will reach virtually every corner of the country — a potentially historic expenditure Biden has put on par with the building of the transcontinental railroad or interstate highway system. There’s money to rebuild roads and bridges, and also to shore up coastlines against climate change, protect public utility systems from cyberattacks and modernize the electric grid. Public transit gets a boost, as do airports and freight rail. Most lead drinking water pipes in America could be replaced. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, the lead Republican negotiator, said the proposals have been talked about for years, yet never seem to get done, including for a bridge across the Ohio River between his state and Kentucky. “We’ll be getting it right for the American people,” he said. The top Democratic negotiator, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, said rarely will a piece of legislation affect so many Americans. She gave a nod to the late fellow Arizona Sen. John McCain and said she was trying to follow his example to “reach bipartisan agreements that try to bring the country together.” Drafted during the COVID-19 crisis, the bill would provide $65 billion for broadband, a provision Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, negotiated because she said the coronavirus pandemic showed that such service “is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity.” States will receive money to expand broadband and make it more affordable. Despite the momentum, action slowed last weekend when Sen. Bill Hagerty, a Tennessee Republican allied with Trump, refused to speed up the process. Trump had called his one-time Japan ambassador and cheered him on, but it’s unclear if the former president’s views still carry as much sway with most senators. Trump issued fresh complaints hours before Tuesday’s vote. He had tried and failed to pass his own infrastructure bill during his time in the White House. Other Republican senators objected to the size, scope and financing of the package, particularly concerned after the Congressional Budget Office said it would add $256 billion to deficits over
the decade. Two Republicans, Sens. Jerry Moran of Kansas and Todd Young of Indiana, had been part of initial negotiations shaping the package but ultimately opposed it. “My efforts to reach a compromise were honest & sincere, & unfortunately, we were unable to arrive at a bill I could support,” Moran said in a tweet. Rather than pressure his colleagues, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has stayed behind the scenes for much of the bipartisan work. He allowed the voting to proceed, and may benefit from enabling this package in a stroke of bipartisanship while trying to stop Biden’s next big effort. He voted for passage on Tuesday. Unlike the $3.5 trillion second package, which would be paid for by higher tax rates for corporations and the wealthy, the bipartisan package is to be funded
by repurposing other money, including some COVID-19 aid. The bill’s backers argue that the budget office’s analysis was unable to take into account certain revenue streams that will help offset its costs — including from future economic growth. Senators have spent the past week processing nearly two dozen amendments, but none substantially changed its framework. The House is expected to consider both Biden infrastructure packages together, but centrist lawmakers urged Speaker Nancy Pelosi to bring the bipartisan plan forward quickly, and they raised concerns about the bigger bill in a sign of the complicated politics still ahead. After the Senate vote, she declared, “Today is a day of progress ... a once in a century opportunity.”

Rockford Rocked Interviews
Catching up with author/musician Gary Hill By Todd Houston Contributor
Todd Houston: You publish Music Street Journal. What can you tell me about that? Gary Hill: Back in around 1997 I had seen some friends of mine publishing a newsletter called “Music News Network” focusing on music reviews and interviews, largely of progressive rock acts. It really resonated with me, and I saw doing something like that as an outlet for the passion I have for music. So, decided to create my own publication. The initial issue came out on February 1st, 1998. At the time it was an email attachment - a Microsoft Word document - sent out to a small number of people who asked to be on the list - I think maybe 25 or 30 people. Over the course of time, it evolved into a website, and really got some huge traffic numbers for the time. The current version of the site doesn’t let me check stats but before we switched to the new version, we were running several hundred thousand unique visitors a month - which was down from the peak of over a million units per month in the early 2000s. Honestly, I’m sure the numbers aren’t in that vicinity any more. The environment has changed. With all the music out there to stream, I think a lot of people just listen to the music to hear for themselves, rather than read reviews of it. We also started doing a series of books titled “Music Street Journal Local” focused on Rockford area musicians. That series was temporarily stopped when the pandemic hit, but hoping to get back to

it later this year. Each book features four bands - one that’s no longer around and three that are still going (at least at the time of publication). They are rather short on text - short write ups on each act and lists of band members and alumni, but feature many pages of black and white photos, mostly taken by Eric Meli. Do you have other connections to music? What really made you want to get involved? I literally felt the fire, the calling, for music one time when I heard (really heard) “Stairway to Heaven” when I was a kid. It made me realize that I wanted to play music. I took a few acoustic guitar lessons and played that instrument exclusively until a friend suggested I play bass. So, I started playing bass on my acoustic guitar until I got my first bass when I was about 14. After that I took lessons for several years from Rick Pemberton (Bare Bones) at Mr. Music. I eventually started tinkering around with other instruments, but only ever played bass in bands. None of the bands I played in ever stayed together long enough to get very far, but I got to play with a lot of guys who later played in bigger bands. There is a pretty funny story about the biggest crowd I ever played for, though. It was the early ‘80s. A bunch of us went to Oktoberfest. We had been drinking most of the day, and continued that trend at the festival. So, at one point I’m in line getting a brat, and one of my friends says, “the band needs a bass player.” Apparently, the band had been booked to play until a certain time. The rest of the group were cool with playing longer, but the bass player was off-the-clock. So, they had announced to the audience that if they had a bass player, they’d keep playing. I told my friend, “I can’t play polkas.” Next thing I know, I’m on-stage playing with these guys. I have no idea if it was any good or not. (Laughs) TH: Your first book was “The Strange Sound of Cthulhu: Music Inspired by the Writings of H.P. Lovecraft.” What is the story on the origins and concept of that book? GH: Well in the early 2000s, after doing MSJ for quite a while, I got the idea that I should write a book - try my hand at that. I had to pick the right topic, though. I thought about doing it on my favorite band (Yes), but there were already so many books out there on that band that it seemed like overkill. Having gotten used to analyzing music and interviewing people, I felt it should be music related.
Then I remembered that I had noticed there was a lot of music influenced by the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft - of whom I’m a big fan. I found that there was no book documenting the connection, so I put one together. H.P. Lovecraft scholar S. T. Joshi, who did the foreword for the book, has said that it’s one of the most interesting books he’s ever read, so I think that’s a good thing. I’ve actually started work on an updated and expanded version of the book for release on the 20th anniversary of its publication - August 20th, 2026. TH: How about your second book, “Poetry of the Air: A Collection of Love Letters to Music from Musicians?” GH: When I started doing Music Street Journal, I had this idea that it would be cool to interview musicians and ask them about the music that inspired them to start doing music. I knew that in my own life, some of the most interesting conversations I’ve had have been talking to people about the music that they like as a fan - the music they are passionate about. So, I wanted to have that kind of experience with famous musicians. It took me a while to take the plunge and start doing that book, but I wound up interviewing a lot of musicians, from local guitar guy Clark Colborn to members and former members of bands ranging from Rage Against The Machine, Yes, Blue Oyster Cult and more. Another local musician featured in the book is Bun E. Carlos. I wound up devoting one chapter to each musician, with their interview questions making up that chapter. I really like the book a lot. I think it’s a fun read. I’m actually planning an expanded edition of that one (for the tenth anniversary) also for release in 2026 and have begun setting up interviews for that. TH: You also run a publishing imprint called “Tales of Wonder and Dread.” Tell us about that if you would. GH: Among my other passions science fiction and horror land pretty high on the list. I published a compilation book titled “Dark Dreams and Weird Worlds” featuring works from a lot of writers I knew both in person and on the internet. That gave me the idea to start doing more collections and other books. So, in 2018 I formed Tales of Wonder and Dread Publishing to release science fiction, horror and generally macabre books. So far I think we’ve released 21 books, including a series on Rockford cemeteries along with Spooky Rockford and Spooky Rockford Two. Our latest is
a collection called “Spooky Houses” and “Spooky Stories,” along with the second collection of my writings will be released on September 4th. TH: Your other endeavor is called “Spooky Ventures.” GH: Yeah, I started that a couple years ago. The idea was to delve into video (via a Youtube channel) and merchandising (via a Cafepress store). As it has evolved, a weekly pattern of videos has emerged. On Mondays a new video is released that’s an audio book - usually a short story, but we did the whole books of “Dracula” and “Frankenstein” one chapter at a time. On Tuesdays, I run Spooky Interviews. Those feature audio of me asking questions and video of the interviewee answering them. I’ve done film makers, authors, ghost hunters and musicians. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are days when there isn’t always a new video to go out. Wednesdays are “Spooky Reviews” where I do a video review of some new spooky thing - be it book, movie or something else. In terms of merchandise, we have all kinds of different apparel, drinkware, phone cover and more. We have a lot of different designs including some “Spooky Rockford” and “Spooky 815” merch, just about all with the tag-line (which I suppose is the Spooky Ventures mission statement) “Keep It Spooky!” TH: You also did two novellas or perhaps one short novel and a novella last year. GH: “Wizard Song” came out first. That one has a pretty interesting back story. When I was about 12 years old, I discovered the band Yes, and progressive rock along with them. That quickly joined two of my other passions of the time, “Star Trek” and Marvel superhero comics. I got the idea to blend them all into a story about a prog rock band that gets abducted by a group of aliens and recruited to fight in an epic battle of good versus evil. The second is a horror story. We live more or less in rural Boone County. One day we were driving past a farmhouse that had obviously been there for a long time, but was updated and well kept up. I got thinking of all the family history that house must have seen. That eventually turned (come on, you know I have a spooky side, right?) to thinking about someone breaking in and finding that the house was better protected than they thought it might be.

WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE PLAZA
Rockford Women’s Surage Plaza Mosaic Bench unveiling on Saturday, August 21 FROM BARBARA SIMON
WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL 2020 COMMITTEE
On Saturday, August 21 at 2 p.m. on the riverfront of the YMCA, The Women’s Suffrage Centennial 2020 Steering Committee will unveil the six mosaic benches that complete the Rockford Women’s Surage Plaza. The mosaic benches commemorate Rockford’s unique and historic landmarks and will serve as seating in this dynamic gathering space. The center tower honors thirty-four Foundational Women and celebrates the momentous passage of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote.
This $120,000 project was undertaken by the Women’s Surage Centennial 2020 Committee (WSC2020), a coalition of civic and women’s advocacy organizations. The sculpture is desig ned as a three-panel mosaic tower on a 10-foot round base. One panel depicts Rockford suragist, Kate F. O’Connor, who worked tirelessly in the early part of the century for extending voting rights to women. The second panel features inspirational Rockford educator and activist Dr. Connie Goode, who represents the many women of color who marched and advocated in the 1960s for enforcement of voting laws for African Americans. depicts our future four young women representing different cultures and ethnicities who now exercise the power of their voice and their vote. Susan Burton, mosaic artist from Marseilles, IL, was chosen to guide this work because of her reputable mastery of the mosaic art form and her storied experience with large, community-build art projects in other cities. Over 200 people in our community – youth, adults, and seniors – have worked on this project, learning about mosaic artistry and the Women’s Suffrage Movement while cutting tiles, filing edges, and strategically placing the pieces.

5 Things I Learned from Doing Tough Mudder By Elizabeth Miller Rockford Area CVB
Tough Mudder was held in Rockford for the first time in 2016. Out of pure curiosity, I went to watch the event that first year and was completely entertained and mesmerized by all of the participants. So much so that I signed up for the next year. Gulp. Here are the 5 things I learned from participating in Tough Mudder.
1. The Running Portion is No Joke
There are the people who breeze through the running portions of Tough Mudder, or at least jog most of the time. And then there’s me. Although, I didn’t train at all prior to the event (I was planning my wedding, cut me some slack), and my legs were feeling it by the time we finished the course. Leading up to the event, I was most nervous about the obstacles, but I overlooked how tiresome the 10 miles were going to be. Luckily, I did discover that there are “rest stops” at certain points in the course where you can rest a minute, have a snack and drink some water. But do yourself a favor
if you’re planning on participating in Tough Mudder and train even a little bit. Jogging the Rock River Recreation Path is a great start!
2. Teamwork is Key
Tough Mudder is definitely a team effort. Even if you sign up by yourself, you’ll always find a team of people waiting and willing to help you at each and every obstacle. One of the obstacles, Pyramid Scheme, involved participants climbing up a large, flat incline…so the only way to get to the top really was to literally climb on other people. Our whole team climbed up a human ladder of complete strangers, so without them, we wouldn’t have made it! (Don’t worry, we helped pull them up when we all reached the top.)
3. Facing Your Fears is Just Something That Has to Happen
I was nervous going into Tough Mudder because of a few particular obstacles. I’m afraid of open water and jumping
off of high heights…and I had to deal with both of those fears on the course. Particularly with the King of the Swingers obstacle. It literally involved jumping off a tall platform to (hopefully) grab onto a swinging bar only to let go of that bar and fall into the water below. My advice for something like this that makes you face your fears is to not take the time to think about it and just jump right in. Also, don’t underestimate the power of counting (as silly as that sounds). Tough Mudder staff at the obstacle would count down from 3 and everyone in the front of the lines would jump to grab the bar at the same time. I didn’t want to be the only one left on my platform at the end of the countdown, and jumping alongside a group of people made it less scary if you’re all doing it at once. Plus, there are certain obstacles that are so fun they make you forget about the scary ones. If you have a chance to participate in Tough Mudder, get excited for the Block Ness Monster. SO FUN.
4. Take the Time to Celebrate the Accomplishment!
Tough Mudder is long and grueling and I couldn’t really walk normally for 3 days after because my calves hurt so much, but crossing that finish line at the end of the course and getting that headband was completely worth it. Take the time to celebrate with your team or the participants you’ve been cheering on! All Mudder finishers get a headband, t-shirt and complimentary beer at the end of the course. Plus, there are plenty of vendors in the vendor area to purchase more items, or even win some freebies!
5. Tough Mudder is Not Only Fun to Participate, but Also Fun to Watch
Tough Mudder is not for everyone, but if you think you might like to give it a whirl, go for it! Trust me, if I can complete the course, anyone can. But if Tough Mudder isn’t your thing, I encourage you to still go out and watch! There is a certain spectator course along the route where people can go and watch a select number of obstacles. The spectator course isn’t the full 10 miles, but you do get to see some of the best obstacles. When I watched Tough Mudder in 2016, we walked the spectator course and were entertained by the King of the Swingers obstacle for about a half hour in itself! You find yourself cheering for complete strangers. Like the person who had trouble getting over the Everest wall and then finally makes it, or the participant who effortlessly made their way across the Funky Monkey obstacle. Some participants are just fun to watch, too. I’ve seen men in full business suits with briefcases in tow on the course, as well as someone dressed up in a full Captain America suit. You never know what you’re going to see! For more information about this Tough Mudder event and more events in the Rockford region, visit GoRockford.com.

Planning for the fall garden BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR
It is hard to imagine but now is the time to plan and plant some cool season crops. With summer vegetables still in the ground, you might look to make room for these crops. Why would you want to plant now? Well, the reason is that some of these vegetables need warm soil and weather in order to germinate properly. By planting in September, you may find that the plants and seeds do not have the heat and temperatures that they need. Cool season vegetables are those that are cold hardy with the ability to withstand
cold air and soil temperatures. They can tolerate our first frost and in some cases, our first hard freeze. These vegetables are those that you plant in the spring before your warm season crops. In fact, you may still be enjoying some of these vegetables such as kale. Garlic is one of the main questions that we get in our University of Illinois Extension oce. While it is planted in mid-October, it can be very hard to find garlic locally. Now is a great time to order and/or look for garlic. Most garlic grown in Northern Illinois is hardneck and if you have a bulb, each clove would be the “seed”
to plant and it would clone itself for harvest next June when planted in the fall. Cool season vegetables include kale, radish, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce (both head and leaf), kohlrabi, and other plants. This group includes those grown in spring and fall. Direct seeded vegetables that can be sowed in two weeks include spinach, lettuce, radish, carrots, and others. If you wait too late to sow these seeds, they will not germinate properly or at all. Directseeded cool season vegetables can be sowed from now until end of August. Cool season vegetables purchased as
transplants are not as dependent on the warmer soil and weather. Still, you should aim to have these planted in the next couple of weeks. Some cool season vegetables purchased as transplants include kale, head lettuce, cabbage, kohlrabi, and broccoli. The trick to a cool season vegetable garden is knowing if it is direct-seeded or a transplant. From there, you’ll be able to get your garden started o right and be harvesting from your backyard in October and November. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.
ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Clean energy moving forward BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL
ILLINOIS RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTORS
As we and much of the world endure heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods and melting glaciers, eorts to reduce global carbon emissions are not keeping up with rising levels of carbon emissions. According to a report by Reuters last week, Greenland experienced its third biggest ice loss in a single day. Warm air brought temperatures approaching 74°F over parts of the island. Warming in the Arctic is faster than over the rest of the planet and serves as an alert as to the direction in which our climate is changing. In Illinois eorts to reduce carbon emissions by transitioning to cleaner sources of energy for electrical production remain stalled. A summary provided by WTTW in Chicago indicates that discussions between the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition consisting of environmental groups and the union-backed Climate Jobs Illinois have broken o. Environmental interests are seeking to phase out most coal plants by 2035 and natural gas plants by 2045. Unions are resisting the phaseouts and are hoping that technologies to limit carbon emissions will arrive in a timely manner. Complicating the issue is Exelon’s determination to close the Byron and Dresden
nuclear plants if state funding for their continued operation that was included in Governor Pritzker’s stalled clean energy plan is not available very soon. The recently passed new infrastructure plan for the United States contains funding for struggling nuclear power plants but Exelon has expressed concerns that the funds will not arrive in time to prevent closing both the Byron and Dresden plants. The new infrastructure plan also includes funding for eorts to capture and store carbon which provides promise for the arrival of technologies to limit carbon emissions that could help continue operating coal and natural gas plants. As we wait for the passage of the Illinois legislation, the renewable energy transition continues to move on. Early eorts to establish an energy transition relied heavily on energy eciency. Our late student, Dick Williams, took energy eciency seriously. He travelled to see the home and oce of the Rocky Mountain Institute which was extremely energy ecient. It had high insulation levels and relied on the sun to heat the building. Armed with guidelines from the Institute, he had a very energy ecient home built east of the Cherry Valley mall which incorporated an earth tube to cool the home in summer and heat the garage in
winter. His biggest challenge was finding a builder willing to meet the challenge of new ideas and methods. The successful eort was one of many buildings which proved people could be comfortable in a well-insulated building relying on solar energy for heating. Now the focus on providing electricity using solar and wind tends to overpower eorts to use less energy and use it more eciently. Of course, we should increase our use of renewable energy sources, but energy eciency and reduced energy consumption remain essential to restoring the health of the planet. With buildings representing a substantial portion of energy demand, energy ecient buildings remain a priority target for cutting carbon emissions for both new construction and renovating existing inefficient homes, buildings and appliances. Interesting developments regarding solar energy include three closed landfills targeted for solar installation In Niagara County, New York. About 38 acres will be covered with a total of 8.12 MW of solar arrays. The formerly unused acres will provide a revenue stream and reduce maintenance costs of the landfills while providing electricity to the county. Green Mountain Power of Vermont continues its eorts to provide battery
storage to owners of solar electric systems driving down the cost of electricity to its customers while increasing their resilience in dealing with power outages from more frequent and severe storms. In 2018 energy storage capacity added was equivalent to taking 6000 homes o grid during peak electrical demand. The utility is also installing a microgrid in Panton to maintain electrical service for residential, farm and municipal buildings during times when power from the grid is unavailable. Inverters, which convert DC current produced by solar panels into AC which can be used in both the home and the electric grid, are being upgraded. They have new communication, monitoring and control capabilities to avoid problems that might cause blackouts and poor power quality on the grid and reduce the likelihood of a system to trip and shut down. According to One Step O The Grid new inverter settings and requirements in Australia will allow more solar, battery and EV connections to the power grid. Upgrades in the industry are ongoing. Illinois can more fully benefit from these improvements at a more rapid pace if the proposed clean energy bill is passed by the legislators. CUB has a form on their site for their readers to use to send a message to legislators to support its passage.
