Rockford man acquitted of murder; bond revoked in child sex case By Jim Hagerty Reporter

ROCKFORD - A man was acquitted of murder last week in a shooting that left another man dead in 2017. Tracy Barfield, 23, was charged with a dozen counts of first-degree murder in the death of 25-year-old Marlon Pendelton, of Rockford. Pendleton died Aug. 26, 2017, after being shot in the back in the 300 block of Underwood Street, on the city’s west side. Barfield, who was wanted on an unrelated warrant when Pendleton was killed, was also charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a FOID. Those charges were dismissed. On what unfolded as a deadly night, Rockford patrol officers responded to the shooting scene at 6 p.m., and located Pendleton. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. At around 9 p.m., police located 25-yearold Tyrell Dorsey in the 300 block of Royal

Avenue. He had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. An hour later, three men were shot in the 4100 block of Auburn Street. Their injuries were not life threatening. While police reported that all three incidents were related and targeted acts, Barfield was not charged in the shootings on Royal Avenue and Auburn Street. There were 18 homicides in Rockford in 2017. Pendleton and Dorsey were the 11th and 12th victims, respectively.

Bond revoked

Judge Randy Wilt, on Aug. 21, revoked bond for a Roscoe woman who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy. Gina M. Colwell, 41, was scheduled to appear before Judge Brendan Maher Wednesday, Aug. 21, but was hospitalized minutes before the hearing. She pleaded guilty in July to a single count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child as part of an open plea agreement. She faces a

mandatory minimum of six years in prison. Over defense attorney Aaron Buscemi’s objection, Maher granted Assistant State’s Attorney Jessica Maveus’s motion to revoke Colwell’s bond, but he did not re-schedule sentencing. “It wouldn’t make sense to re-schedule anything until we know we have her in our custody,” Maher said. Colwell assaulted the victim multiple times between Nov. 24, 2014 and Feb. 20, 2016. She also faces a single count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in a pending case involving a 13-year-old boy she allegedly abused between Dec. 31, 2015 and Jan. 1, 2016. If convicted in that case, she could spend between two to seven years in prison, a sentence that would be served consecutive to the first term. Colwell’s medical condition was still not known at press time, and she was not listed on the Winnebago County Jail inmate roster.

Rockford home sales hit highest average in 13 years Staff Report

ROCKFORD - The average Rockford home sold for $147,001 last month, the highest price for a home sold in July in 13 years and the highest average price for any month going back to July 2006, according to new stats released by Rockford Area Realtors. The three-month-rolling-average price of a home sold in the Rockford market (Winnebago, Boone and Ogle Counties) in July was up 3.5% or nearly $5,000 from $147,001 this July to $142,015 last July. The average year-to-date price was $135,160, 2.3% higher than the $132,101 average price for the first seven months of 2018. “There’s no doubt that the Rockford housing market is changing,” commented Conor Brown, CEO, Rockford Area Realtors. “What we’re seeing right now indicates it’s a strong time for sellers to enter the real estate market.” Rockford homeowners seem to agree. There were a total of 708 new listings in

July, up 10.6% from 640 new listings last July. This was only the fifth of the last 12 months which saw a year-over-year increase in new homes for sale. While inventory is still tight, the rate of inventory decline is falling drastically. There were 1,137 properties for sale in July, a drop of 5.4% from 1,202 homes available last July. For the first seven months of the year inventory is down 5.2% By comparison, inventory fell by 12.9% from 2017 to 2018, was down 18.6% from 2016 to 2017, was down 18.7% from 2015 to 2016, and was down 11.6% from 2014 to 2015. “What a difference a year makes,” Brown said. “Over the last few years, many sellers are seeing themselves put in a stronger and stronger position to put their house on the market.” Other July housing measures were also positive indicators for the Rockford housing market. Total sales were up from 450 homes sold last July to 459 sold this July, a 2-percent increase. The time it takes to sell

a home remains relatively short. Average days on the market in July was 36 days, up from 30 days in June, but down from 39 days last July. And distressed properties (foreclosures and short sales) remain low, making up just 6% of sales, down from 8% last July. Also spurring on the Rockford market is historically low mortgages rates. In July, the rate on a 30-year fixed home loan averaged 3.75%, down more than three quarter’s of a point from last July’s rate of 4.54%. In 2018, rates never fell below 4.25%. July marked the longest stretch of loan rates below 5% in more than 60 years. “The Rockford housing market offers major incentives for both buyers and sellers,” Brown said. “Rockford home buyers are saving big as interest rates are continuing to decline. And Rockford home sellers will likely earn some of the greatest returns on their investment by selling now before prices start to normalize.”

Israel’s shadow war with Iran bursts into the open BY ARON HELLER ASSOCIATED PRESS

JERUSALEM (AP) – The long shadow war between Israel and Iran has burst into the open in recent days, with Israel allegedly striking Iran-linked targets as far away as Iraq and crash-landing two drones in Hezbollah-dominated southern Beirut. These incidents, along with an air raid in Syria that Israel says thwarted an imminent Iranian drone attack, have raised tensions at a particularly fraught time. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is looking to project strength three weeks before national elections, while Iran has taken a series of provocative actions in recent months aimed at pressuring European nations to provide relief from crippling U.S. sanctions. Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iranbacked Hezbollah, vowed to retaliate after a drone crashed on the militant group’s Beirut media oce and another exploded midair early Sunday. Israeli forces along the border with Lebanon are on high alert, raising fears of a repeat of the 2006 war. Netanyahu has warned Nasrallah to “relax,” saying Israel “knows how to defend itself and how to pay back its enemies.” The Israeli leader has also addressed Gen. Qassem Soleimani, head of Iran’s elite Quds Force and the architect of its regional entrenchment, telling him to “be careful with your words and be even more careful with your actions.” Israel said Soleimani masterminded the alleged drone attack. Another commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohsen Rezaei, dismissed the Israeli allegations as a “lie.” Israel has also blamed Iran for recent rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, and on Monday struck a Palestinian base in Lebanon near the Syrian border. Israel views Iran as its greatest threat, and has hailed President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and re-impose sanctions. But Netanyahu may fear the U.S. is moderating that approach after Trump said there’s a “really good chance” he could meet with Iran’s president. The two close allies already appear to be at odds over recent strikes on Iranlinked militias in Iraq. In a rare move, U.S. ocials acknowledged that Israel was behind at least one of the strikes, and the Pentagon pointedly distanced itself from the Iraq strikes, saying U.S. forces were not involved. None of the parties is believed to

be seeking war, but the potential for miscalculation could lead to a regional conflagration.

ISRAEL

Israel says it is responding to increasingly aggressive moves by Iran and seeking to roll back its regional entrenchment. As Netanyahu fights for an unprecedented fifth term in the Sept. 17 elections, he is eager to display his security credentials and discuss what many Israelis see as his signature achievement – countering Iran and its nuclear program. Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes against Iran-backed forces in Syria since the civil war began in 2011. In recent months it has gone increasingly public with the campaign, immediately confirming the kinds of strikes it used to rarely acknowledge. Even Netanyahu’s political opponents support the operations, which are aimed at preventing Iran from establishing a permanent military presence on the Syrian frontier. But they have questioned his motives in making them public, with some accusing him of grandstanding, in what they suggest is an attempt to win over voters ahead of the elections. “There is definitely a more aggressive line now, even if Israel isn’t saying so ocially,” said Amos Harel, an Israeli military analyst. “Part of it has to do with the increased Iranian eorts and part of it has to do with all the other considerations.” Netanyahu’s opponents have hammered him for refusing to strike harder at the Islamic militant group Hamas after recent rocket fire from Gaza. Netanyahu also faces a tide of corruption allegations that have raised the stakes ahead of the vote. He has denied any wrongdoing. Despite his tough rhetoric, Netanyahu has traditionally been risk-averse in military matters. But he also views countering Iran as his primary mission and may hope to cement his legacy while he has a staunch supporter in the White House.

IRAN

Trump’s decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal and impose maximal sanctions on Iran has devastated its economy and left it desperate for relief. Iran has begun openly breaching limits set by the deal, saying it cannot abide by the agreement unless European signatories oer it a respite from sanctions. In recent weeks, Iran shot down a U.S. military surveillance drone and has been blamed for mine attacks on six oil tankers

near the Strait of Hormuz, something it denies. Iran has also seized a Britishflagged oil tanker. At the same time, Tehran has launched a fresh diplomatic oensive, with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif making a surprise appearance at the G-7 summit in France as part of a worldwide tour ahead of next month’s U.N. General Assembly. Experts say Iran seeks sanctions relief and not war, but are alarmed by the potential for miscalculation, either by Tehran or its foes. Iran has spent decades building up powerful allies in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and elsewhere, which it could call upon in a war with Israel or the United States.

HEZBOLLAH

Hezbollah appears likely to respond to the drone attack in order to project strength and establish deterrence, but the nature and scope of its retaliation will depend largely on domestic considerations. Nasrallah’s pledge to shoot down Israeli aircraft that enter Lebanese airspace is in keeping with the bravado he regularly displays in public addresses, but he will have to weigh his response with the risk of igniting another devastating war. Lebanon is already mired in an economic crisis that many blame on the government, which is dominated by Hezbollah and its allies. Nasrallah insists such considerations won’t dictate his response, but officials close to Hezbollah’s leadership say it is mindful of being perceived as dragging the country into a ruinous war with Israel that would hasten its economic collapse. Another consideration is the recent U.S.-mediated eorts to open indirect talks between Lebanon and Israel aimed at demarcating their maritime border, which Lebanon hopes will allow it to begin oshore oil and gas exploration later this year. Imad Marmal, a journalist close to Hezbollah, wrote Tuesday that the group’s response will be “well studied and proportionate in a way that conveys the categorical message that changing the rules of engagement is prohibited, but without leading to the outbreak of all-out war.” That may be easier said than done. The monthlong war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006 was sparked by a cross-border raid in which Hezbollah killed and captured Israeli soldiers. Nasrallah later said he would have never ordered the operation if he had known it would lead to a war of that magnitude.

Amazon Fires

Respiratory ailments hit in Amazon as Brazil spurns G-7 aid By Luis Andres Henao and Christopher Torchia Associated Press

PORTO VELHO, Brazil (AP) – Acrimony between Brazil and European countries seeking to help fight Amazon fires deepened on Tuesday, jeopardizing hopes of global unity over how to protect a region seen as vital to the health of the planet. A personal spat between the leaders of Brazil and France seemed to dominate the dispute, but it also centered on Brazilian perceptions of alleged interference by Europe on matters of sovereignty, economic development and the rights of indigenous people. Brazil said it will set conditions for accepting any aid from the Group of Seven nations, which offered tens of millions of dollars for firefighting and rainforest protections. The Amazon’s rainforests are a major absorber of carbon dioxide, considered a critical defense against rising temperatures and other disruptions caused by climate change. While many of the recorded fires this year were set in already deforested areas by people clearing land for cultivation or pasture, Brazilian government figures indicate that they are much more widespread this year, suggesting the threat to the vast ecosystem is intensifying. The effect of the fires was evident in the Amazonian city of Porto Velho, where a thick pall of smoke covered the sky for most of the day. Elane Diaz, a nurse in the city, spoke about respiratory problems while waiting for a doctor’s appointment at a hospital with her 5-year-old-son Eduardo. “The kids are affected the most. They’re coughing a lot,” Diaz said. “They have problems breathing. I’m concerned because it affects their health.” Still, Diaz and some other residents in Porto Velho, the capital of Rondonia state, were supportive of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, saying he was doing what he could to protect the Amazon and that international criticism was unfounded. “Germany had already been helping through NGOs and they couldn’t prevent this,” said Mona Lisa Pereira, an agronomist. “It seems like this is the fire of a lifetime. But it’s not. We have fires every year.” Bolsonaro, who took office this year with a promise to boost development in Latin America’s biggest economy, has questioned whether offers of international aid mask a plot to exploit the Amazon’s resources and weaken Brazilian growth. On Tuesday, he said French President Emmanuel Macron had called him a liar

and that he would have to apologize before Brazil considers accepting rainforest aid. Macron has to retract those comments “and then we can speak,” Bolsonaro said. In a video message, Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho offered an apology to France for what he called Bolsonaro’s “hysteria,” saying the Brazilian government had resorted to insults to dodge responsibility for the Amazon fires. Bolsonaro met governors of states in the Amazon region, some of whom criticized laws that protect the environment and the rights of indigenous people that they said limited opportunities for economic development. Marcos Jose Rocha dos Santos, the governor of Rondonia state, questioned the intentions of international aid. “International resources are welcome as long as who uses those resources is us,” Rocha dos Santos said. “We will determine where the money will be applied, it’s useless if those resources get here and go to international NGOs.” At a summit in France on Monday, the G-7 nations pledged $20 million to help fight the flames in the Amazon and protect the rainforest, in addition to a separate $12 million from Britain and $11 million from Canada. Onyx Lorenzoni, the Brazilian president’s chief of staff, sharpened the criticism, saying Europe should use the funds for its own problems. “Macron could not avoid an obvious fire in a church that is a world heritage site,” Lorenzoni told the G1 news website, referring to the Notre Dame Cathedral that was ravaged by fire in April. Macron, who has questioned Bolsonaro’s trustworthiness and commitment to protecting biodiversity, shrugged off the snub from the Brazilian president. The French leader said Bolsonaro’s interpretation was a “mistake” and that the aid offer is “a sign of friendship.” He said the aid money isn’t just aimed at Brazil, but at nine countries in the vast Amazon region that also spans Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, an overseas region of France. About 60% of the Amazon region is in Brazil. Even so, Macron has threatened to block a European Union trade deal with several South American states, including Brazil. He has also acknowledged that Europe, by importing soya from Brazil, shares some blame for agricultural pressure on the rainforest. Bolsonaro has previously said he wants to convert land for more cattle pastures and soybean farms. In contrast to the tension between

France and Brazil, U.S. President Donald Trump praised the Brazilian president. “He is working very hard on the Amazon fires and in all respects doing a great job for the people of Brazil - Not easy,” Trump tweeted Tuesday. Bolsonaro also said that Japan is “extremely aligned with us” and seeks a deeper trade partnership with South American nations. Brazil’s National Space Research Institute, which monitors deforestation, said the number of fires has risen by 85% to more than 77,000 in the last year, a record since the institute began keeping track in 2013. About half of the fires were in the Amazon region, with most just in the past month. Neighboring Bolivia is battling its own vast blazes. The largest are in the Chiquitanía region, a zone of dry forest, farmland and open prairies that has seen an expansion of farming and ranching. President Evo Morales, who has been under criticism for an allegedly slow response to the fires, was in the region on Tuesday overseeing firefighting efforts involving more than 3,500 people, including soldiers, police and volunteers. The Amazon has experienced an increased rate of fires during drought periods in the last 20 years, but the phenomenon this year is “unusual” because drought has not yet hit, said Laura Schneider of Rutgers UniversityNew Brunswick.

Schneider, an associate professor in the geography department, said fire is commonly used by people to clear land for cultivation, and the actual area burned this year must be measured for an accurate comparison with damage in past years. The funds offered this week by the world’s richest countries are widely viewed as useful but insufficient for dealing with the threats to the Amazon in the long term. Under international pressure, Bolsonaro has said he would make 44,000 troops available to fight the blazes. However, federal prosecutors in the Amazon state of Para said they had warned Brazil’s environmental protection agency about a “fire day” organized by farmers earlier this month to clear land. The agency said it lacked support from military police to protect its field teams in risky monitoring operations, according to prosecutors. Grace Quale, a laboratory technician at the 9 of July hospital in Porto Velho, said more people were undergoing tests because of respiratory problems caused by smoke. Children and the elderly are suffering the most, said Quale, who supports Bolsonaro and believes fires are being set by opponents trying to discredit him. “What’s happening is disrespectful to our humans, to our animals, because if they end the Amazon, how will we survive?” she said.

Illinois Labor Day Connections

Illinois has been the nexus for the nation’s labor movement By Phil Luciano

Of the Journal Star of Peoria

From organizing unions to effecting labor laws, Illinois has played a vital historical role as a flashpoint – sometimes involving violence and danger – for workplace fairness. These are some of the key figures and events of that struggle.

Mother Jones

She lost her own family, so she adopted a new one, a huge one, lifting up the cause of labor. In the process, Mother Jones became perhaps the greatest labor force in the history of Illinois. An Irish immigrant and dressmaker, Mary Harris landed in Memphis, Tennessee, where she met and wed George Jones, a foundry worker and union supporter. They’d had four children by 1867, when an epidemic of yellow fever claimed the entire household, save Mary. The 30-year-old widow relocated to Chicago to start anew with a dress shop, but it was lost in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. She scraped to get by, sometimes sewing piecework for wealthy Chicago families. As she’d gaze out their picture windows, she gained a keen eye and soft heart for disenfranchised. Jones gravitated to organizing with the Knights of Labor, then the United Mine Workers. Her labor-rights moxie quickly won over workers. She’d travel to help wherever the call – garment workers in Chicago, steelworkers in Pittsburgh, bottle washers in Milwaukee – railing against companies and corporations for fair wages and safe working conditions. At the close of the 19th century, Illinois became a labor battleground, especially for downstate miners, drawing her attention. After she died in 1930, she was buried among the miners laid to rest at Union Miners Cemetery in Mount Olive. Her simple marker carries some uncharacteristically purple prose, in part extolling: “She gave her life to the world of labor, her blessed soul to heaven.” It’s almost a shame she isn’t remembered there from one of her most telling quotes: “I’m not a humanitarian. I’m a hell raiser.”

The Haymarket Affair

With the explosion of a stick of dynamite, the Haymarket Affair became a key flashpoint of the U.S. labor movement. By May 1886, Chicago had become a labor battleground, with pro-labor forces fighting for better working conditions and

pay. The tug-of-war also included radical anarchists who wanted to overthrow capitalism, sparking fear among much of the public. To advance the idea of an eight-hour workday, a labor rally was set for May 4 – a day after police fired upon on an angry mob of striking Chicago workers, killing two. The rally seemed peaceful, ending as a throng of police stepped through to disperse attendees. Then a stick of dynamite was hurled at the police, killing seven cops and one civilian. In return, officers started firing into the crowd, wounding dozens. Eight men were arrested and convicted in connection with the bombing, though the thrower was never found. Still, four were hanged; at the gallows, one said, “The time will come when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today.” His words proved prescient. Though a wave of xenophobia had swept the nation immediately after the bombing, public skepticism gradually grew over what increasingly seemed like a sham prosecution. Of the other four defendants, one committed suicide while the other three were sent to prison; however, they were later pardoned. The martyrdom of the defendants fueled pro-labor forces, eventually leading to the eight-hour workday, along with the creation of International Workers’ Day on May 1.

The Pullman Strike

The Pullman Strike was the first national strike in American, riveting the country to the burgeoning labor movement. South of Chicago, the Pullman Co. not only built and leased passenger train cars but set up a company town of Pullman, allegedly as a model community. But during a recession in 1893, the company laid off workers and cut wages, yet did not reduce rents. Led by the American Railway Union, 4,000 Pullman workers went on strike May 22, 1894. Gradually, the strike grew nationally: by June 30, 125,000 workers on 29 railroads had walked off the job rather than handle Pullman cars. The strike shut down much of the nation’s freight and passenger traffic west of Detroit. In early July, the federal government (leaning on antitrust and commerce laws) obtained a court injunction ordering ARU leaders from inciting workers to refuse to work. President Grover Cleveland sent federal troops into Chicago. With the city

swarmed with more than 14,000 troops and policemen, 6,000 rioters destroyed hundreds of railcars on July 6. The next day, federal troops responded to an assault by firing into a mob, killing as many as 30 people. Public opinion, originally in favor of workers, switched to opposition as rail service languished. Federal troops were recalled on July 20, effectively ending the strikes. The company agreed to rehire strikers, as long as they sign a pledge to never join a union. But their rents were not reduced. As a conciliatory gesture to the labor movement, President Cleveland and Congress created Labor Day.

The Herrin Massacre

In 1922, a nation recoiled in horror at gruesome strike violence in downstate Illinois. That month, the United Mine Workers continued a nationwide strike. However, at the Southern Illinois Coal Co.’s strip mine near Herrin, workers kept working to pull coal from the earth but not ship it out. In mid-June, however, the owner decided to violate the agreement and ship coal. When the union workers refused, he fired them and called in replacements from Chicago – 50 men unaware that they had been hired as strikebreakers in an area where 90 percent of the workforce carried a union card. On June 21, shots rang out at the mine, though accounts differ as to who pulled the trigger first. Regardless, soon one strikebreaker and two strikers were dead, with a third seriously wounded. Union men from the entire region thundered to the mine, en route grabbing guns and ammunition from shops. Realizing their outnumbered predicament, the strikebreakers agreed to stop work in exchange for safe passage out. On the morning of June 22, they came out of the mine, and union workers marched them toward town, along the way killing the mine’s one-legged superintendent. After several miles of walking, the group reached a barb-wire fence. Strikers lined up the scabs against the fence and told them to run for their lives. As they clawed to climb the fence, strikers opened fire, killing and wounding many. The final death toll was 23. In the aftermath, prosecutors obtained 214 indictments. But when the first few resulted in acquittals by sympathetic local juries, the rest were dropped. The nation reacted to the massacre

with disgust. President Warren Harding characterized it as a “shocking crime, barbarity, butchery, rot and madness.”

The Cherry Mine Disaster

Though touted for modern safeguards, the St. Paul Coal Co. Mine sparked one of the worst disasters in mining history. The mine, located in Cherry about 50 miles northeast of Peoria, was considered to be secure when it opened in 1905. But on Nov. 13, 1909, an electric outage prompted miners to light kerosene lanterns and torches to continue to pull coal from the deep mine. Shortly after noon, embers from a wall lantern dropped below into a coal car filled with hay for mules. Flames spread to support timbers and quickly raced through the mine. Of 490 miners, 200 men and boys managed to scramble out. Meanwhile, a large shaft fan was reversed in an attempt to blow out the fire, but only succeeded in spreading the blaze. The mine’s two shafts were shut to smother the fire, but the tactic cut off oxygen to miners and allowed black damp (a suffocating mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen) to build up in the mine. Twelve volunteers went down a shaft in a lift to attempt a rescue. All died. Eight days after the ordeal began, 21 survivors were brought to the surface, though two later died. In the end, 259 men and boys died. Several families lost two or more relatives. Among the dead were a father-son team, the Kralls, whose bodies were found locked in an embrace. The disaster also claimed the lives of brothers John, Morrison, David and James Love, immigrants from Scotland. A surviving Love brother, William, later married the widow of one of the men who died while trying to rescue the trapped miners. The Cherry Mine Disaster inspired a crackdown on child-labor laws and led to mine-safety rules that eventually paved the way to modern worker’s compensation laws. TUBE TALK

That in between time BY PAULA HENDRICKSON CONTRIBUTOR

We’re at that strange time of year where most summer series are wrapping up and the fall shows have yet to premiere. Sure, new shows are still rolling out – Amazon Prime’s Carnival Row, headed up by Orlando Bloom, starts streaming August 30 (and is getting lackluster reviews) – but I’m already thinking ahead a month to when some of my favorite returning series will be returning. That makes this a good time to check out currently-airing series you’ve never watched before. It’s interesting to do that now and then. Not long ago I watched an episode of a show my brother is always talking about, DIY’s Maine Cabin Masters. I liked it – then again, they wove doormats

from repurposed ropes from lobster traps, which I immediately wanted to try despite having no access to lobster trap ropes – but haven’t added it to my must-see list. The other day I was flipping between channels, giving each show a few minutes to grab me before switching to another program. I wound up watching about half an hour of A&E’s Live P.D. while marveling at how stupid some people can be. Like the woman pulled over for erratic driving. Police found drugs in her car and while waiting for her care to be towed she asked the police if she could keep the drugs. It was a microcosmic view of a world I have no interest in seeing up close. Every now and then you’ll find a new-toyou show that you like. Sometimes they’re shows that have been running a long time,

like Science’s Mysteries of The Abandoned, which I “discovered” earlier this year. Of course, I’ve always enjoyed Mysteries at the Museum, which has a similar vibe, so I knew I’d learn interesting historic trivia. It can be harder to get into watching scripted series when you’ve already missed several seasons, but it’s still fun to watch a random episode of popular shows you’ve never watched before. More often than not I find myself wondering why anyone watches those shows. But every now and then a show will surprise you. The other night I enjoyed the updated version of To Tell the Truth. I’ve never been a big NCIS fan, so I never bothered watching either of its spinos, NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans. Then about a year ago, WREX started airing

repeats of NCIS: New Orleans immediately after SNL and I found myself hooked into more than a few episodes while working on a knitting project I couldn’t put down. Have I ever watched a first-run episode of NCIS: New Orleans? No. But Scott Bakula, CCH Pounder, Daryl Mitchell and company are almost as fun to watch as the Louisiana scenery – even if I miss all of the details and jokes regular viewers would get. My job requires watching a lot of television, and I never know what kinds of article ideas might come from watching a program I’ve never seen before. If it weren’t for that fact, I’d probably do the best thing of all during the in-between season: turn o the TV and pick up a good book.

Stock Market

US stocks slide as bond yields surge on trade war worries By Alex Veiga

Associated Press

Stocks capped a wobbly day on Wall Street with broad losses Tuesday as anxious investors shifted money to U.S. government bonds, gold and other traditional safe-haven assets. The selling, which erased some of the market’s gains from a strong rally a day earlier, came as long-term bond yields once again fell below short-term ones, a rare phenomenon that has correctly predicted previous recessions. Worries that the costly trade war between the U.S. and China will drag the U.S. economy into a recession have increased demand for U.S. government bonds. On Tuesday, that pulled the yield in the 10-year Treasury below that of the two-year Treasury. This so-called inversion of the U.S. yield curve has accurately predicted the past five recessions. “You have a symptom in the inversion, but really the cause of that symptom is the tariffs and the trade war causing a global slowdown,” said Dan Heckman, national investment consultant at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. The S&P 500 fell 9.22 points, or 0.3%, to 2,869.16. The benchmark index has fallen for the past four weeks in a row. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 120.93 points, or 0.5%, to 25,777.90. The Nasdaq slid 26.79 points, or 0.3%, to 7,826.95. Smaller company stocks bore the brunt of the selling, which sent the Russell 2000 index down 19.96 points, or 1.4%, to 1,456.04. Major indexes in Europe closed mostly

higher. The major U.S. indexes are on track for losses of 3% or more in August in what has been a volatile month for the market. From the get-go Tuesday the indexes appeared headed to extend the gains from Monday’s rally. But they turned lower by midmorning as the inversion between long-term and short-term bond yields became more worrisome. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note tumbled to 1.48% from 1.54% late Monday. It briefly dropped to 1.468%. At the same time, the yield on the two-year Treasury dropped to 1.51%, down from 1.53% a day earlier. The yield at one point climbed as high as 1.54%. When the yield curve inverted earlier this month for the first time since 2007, it led to a broad market sell-off. While the inversion in the yield curve has been a good indicator of a coming recession in the past, it usually means a recession is at least a year off, said J.J. Kinahan, chief market strategist for TD Ameritrade. “Just because it happened doesn’t mean the world ends,” he said. “We do still have the China tariff situation, which many believe, if settled quickly, could also lead to a quick economic expansion.” Financial sector stocks fell the most as bond prices surged, which pulled yields sharply lower. When yields decline it means lower profits for banks, because they pull down interest rates on mortgage and other loans. JPMorgan Chase fell 1.1% and Citigroup dropped 1.7%. The latest losses mark a shift in investor sentiment from just a day earlier, when tentative optimism about the potential for

progress in the trade war drove a broad market rally. Last week, the trade conflict escalated again with Washington and Beijing threatening new tariffs on each other’s goods, triggering a sharp sell-off in global markets. On Monday the market recouped some of those losses after President Donald Trump said his negotiators had received encouraging calls from China over the weekend. Traders drew encouragement from the development, even though China’s foreign ministry denied knowledge of any such calls. M a rk e t w at c he r s a r e b e c om i ng increasingly circumspect about what lies ahead. UBS, the largest wealth manager in the world, recommended that customers reduce their exposure to stocks, the first time the bank has done so since the depths of Europe’s debt crisis in 2012. “What’s still rattling investors is the reality that the trade war is dragging on and, despite discussions about an upcoming meeting, the market is losing confidence that perhaps that might take place,” Heckman said. Health care stocks and several big retailers also fell Tuesday. Humana slid 5.8%, while Gap slid 4.9%. Safe-play sectors like utilities and real estate were among the gainers. Exelon added 1.2% and Welltower rose 0.4%. Investors also shifted money into traditional safe havens like gold, which

Rockford Rocked

Spotlight on Kashmir drummer Doug Marocco Todd Houston Contributor

RRI: Hey Doug what have you been up to lately? How’s the family? Doug Marocco: Doing great Todd! I really enjoy your Rockford Rocked page by the way. The family is doing great as well. My oldest daughter, Alexandra, is at Rockford University finishing her teaching degree. My son Brady is in his senior year and my youngest, Miranda, is a junior – both at Harlem High School. The younger kids both run cross country and track which makes for a busy schedule. My wife Susan, besides running the household, works in IT at Mercyhealth and lately has become a crossfit junkie. RRI: Marocco is a cool name for a drummer. Where does the name originate? DM: I guess I have never really thought about my name being cool, but it does have a nice ring to it. My grandfather, Geno Marocco, was from Rome, Italy. RRI: For those who don’t know, you’ve been playing drums in one band or another for more than half of your life. Let’s talk about how/why you got into music and drumming in the first place and who were

the people/bands/musicians you looked up to starting out? DM: Well as a young kid, I really knew very little about music, because my parents didn’t have a stereo. My dad was a car guy. So, my musical interest was sparked my uncle, Mike. He had a nice stereo and was into the popular hard rock bands of the time. He would let me look through his albums and listen to them. I was intrigued by the album covers and the guys with long hair and psychedelic clothes. The three albums that captivated me were Jimi Hendrix Cry of Love, Santana, and Chicago Transit Authority. I wanted to be one of those mysterious guys with the long hair. Somehow, I convinced my parents that I wanted to play drums and they eventually signed me up to take lessons from Jack Brand. I was hooked. I played drums non-stop, mostly along to records. Jack introduced me to Jazz and the importance of keeping good time, playing for the music and being professional. Danny Seraphine (Chicago) was my first real influence. RRI: I understand that you hooked up with a very popular Rockford area band called The Employees. Didn’t this band

have a spot on one of the WYFE Y95 albums? DM: The Employees was my first real band. We had a spot on the second WYFE album and won the voting, if I remember correctly. RRI: What style of music were you gravitating toward during this time? DM: We were kind of a power pop type of band. We played half covers and half originals at our shows. Frank Isabelli was the guitarist and songwriter. He was a huge Beatles and Cheap Trick fan, so we had a lot of those influences. RRI: Are you still doing The Kashmir (Chicago’s Led Zeppelin Show) gig? From the video footage that I watched you guys put on a very convincing and fantastic show! Start with how you got that gig if you would. DM: Yes, I am still doing shows with Kashmir. I got that gig in early 2009 by answering an ad in Illinois Entertainer. I thought it might be a cool gig; I like Led Zeppelin. I called Frank Livingston and set up an audition. I remember I played four songs at that audition, The Ocean, The Lemon Song, Rock and Roll, and Out on the Tiles. Frank liked my feel and I got the gig along with another drummer-they use a rotation of musicians to cover all the shows. I was given the set list to learn, as it’s complicated with truncated versions and one song goes into the next without stopping for much of the show. I had just been practicing at home when I told Frank I was going to come watch one of the shows. On the day of the show, Frank calls and asks if I could go ahead and play the gig. The night before did not go so well and the singer and the bass player refused to go on again with the other drummer. I said I really didn’t know the songs that well yet, but he convinced me to play that night. I frantically listened to the songs driving to the gig. There were about 800 people there including the drummer they just fired. I screwed up a couple things, but got through it pretty well considering I had only had one audition that didn’t include the singer. RRI: Wow, talk about pressure! DM: So yeah, I started playing gigs with them right away. I really had to learn on-the-fly. As a band, we’ve really only had three real practice sessions and they were basically stripped down rehearsals, with no vocals. I continually listen to the songs and practice at home to improve my playing. RRI: What song in the set list is the most fun for you to play? DM: I really like playing Kashmir as it just sits in a big fat pocket. I’ve learned to play it better with the click track (to sync up with the recorded keyboard track). It was a disaster the first time I played it. Really, all the Zeppelin songs are pretty fun to play. RRI: Where in the world did you find those orange Ludwig Vistalite drums? They look identical to the set Bonham used on the 1973 tour. (These drums were made

from a clear plastic material) DM: The drums belong to the band actually. They were custom built for Frank by a guy in Indiana named Jamie. I use my own cymbals, hardware and a ‘70s supraphonic snare. The drums are played wide open and they are loud! (laughs) RRI: So being based in Chicago and being a full-time dad, husband among many other things, did you ever say to yourself, “man this is just too much”? Or does your passion for music put a stop to those silly thoughts? DM: I tell ya man my schedule can be very tight and has been hectic at times. I’m juggling a day job, family, running and the demands of multiple bands. There were times when my kids were younger and I was driving home from Chicago racing the clock to get home before my wife had to leave for work at 5:30 a.m. I took a break from Kashmir gigs last year, but I have tried to become better at scheduling a sensible workload. I still have a passion to play the drums and hopefully entertain people. RRI: Okay here comes the fun part. If you had to choose one. RRI: Neil Peart (RUSH drummer) or Keith Moon (The Who)? DM: That’s a tough one! They are both great and important drummers, but neither was very inspirational for me. They were great fits for their bands, but they both play a little busy for my taste. To answer the question, I would have to say Moon, since he was a more improvisational player. RRI: Listening to digitally remastered music or old vinyl records on a turntable? DM: That’s an easy one – old vinyl records on vintage tube gear. RRI: Led Zeppelin fourth album (featuring “Stairway to Heaven”) or their second album (featuring “Heart beaker”)? DM: Another tough question and, I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to go with both. RRI: American Idol or America’s Got Talent? (Television shows) DM: I really don’t watch reality TV, so I guess neither one. I do like The Office reruns though. RRI: What’s next for Doug Marocco? DM: I think I’m in a good situation musically right now playing with Kashmir, Mr. Big Stuff and doing a little free-lancing. I hope to keep improving my playing and focus on quality gigs versus quantity. As far as outside of music, I plan to focus on spending time with Susan and the kids. Hopefully, we can get in some more travel and adventures before Brady and Miranda are off to college. On a personal level, I want to get back to running and racing at a competitive level again, possibly eventually doing an Ironman. I have been really lucky and thankful to have played music with so many really great musicians over the years that have helped shape who I am today.

Tourism’s Economic Impact Up in 2018 Rockford Area CVB

In 2018, travel provided $392 million in economic impact to Rockford and Winnebago County communities and supported the livelihood of 3,039 hardworking area residents. At that level, visitor spending reached an all-time high, up 2.1 percent from $384 million in 2017. That spending generated visitor industry employment income of $95 million and generated $30 million in state and local taxes. The ten-year period between 2009 and 2018 shows visitor-related economic impact in Winnebago County growing 54 percent; faster than all other major counties except Cook (Chicago, at 58 percent) and much faster than the set average of 41 percent. Major metropolitan counties that were used for comparison are Cook, DuPage, Champaign, McLean, Lake, Will, Peoria, Madison, St. Clair, Sangamon, Kane and Rock Island. In addition to spending, visitors also generated increased funds for local and state tax coffers to use for core services

such as police, fire and public works. In 2018, visitors paid $23.2 million in state and $6.8 million in local tax receipts (up 6.2 percent and 0.7 percent). Visitor expenditure, tax revenue and employment data are provided by the U.S. Travel Association and the Illinois Department of Commerce. “Tourism is a strong economic driver locally and has caused a ripple effect throughout our community. Based on reports and data analysis we can clearly see many businesses and organizations are thriving from successful tourism-related initiatives and events,” said Jennifer Furst, RACVB’s board chair. “I especially appreciate the correlation between visitor spending and how that helps put local people to work.” The economic impact of tourism has grown rapidly in recent years, and the recent and coming investments in the community – including a new downtown hotel and conference center and a future casino gaming complex in Rockford – will fuel additional impact. “I am pleased to see all the ways tourism

Winnebago County Fair has been a key contributor to the overall success of our community. Rockford area attractions, businesses and organizations have seen increased attendance and spending as visitors participate in various leisure activities, business events and sports tournaments,” says City of Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara. “The work of the RACVB helps to boost our economy which allows us to create new job opportunities and welcome more people.” “More and more as we share the story of our region with potential customers and visitors, they are experiencing what our friends and neighbors know to be true – our region is on the rise and has a bright future. Investments made in marketing and promoting the region are working and returning results. The year over year growth we are seeing demonstrates that folks continue to choose the Rockford region to visit. We know this success can spur on additional growth as every visitor is a potential new resident or investor,” said John Groh, RACVB president/CEO. In addition to growth in Winnebago County, the Illinois Office of Tourism reported both international and domestic travel expenditures grew to $41.7 billion in 2018, which is a $2 billion increase to the

state’s economy over 2017. More than 117 million visitors came to Illinois in 2018 – the 8th consecutive year of record tourism growth in the state – contributing to an increase of visitor spending, tax revenue and local jobs. Fast Facts about Illinois Tourism in 2018: • Of Illinois’ 114.6 million domestic visitors, 16% were for business and 84% for leisure. • Illinois welcomed more than 2.3 million international visitors in 2018. • In the past 10 years, domestic travel to Illinois has increased by 26 million visitors. • The visitor expenditures generated by domestic visitors supported 342,300 jobs in 2018, which is an increase of 6,200 jobs since 2017. • State and local tax revenue generated from visitor spending jumped 7.1 percent to $3.3 billion, creating an additional $220.8 million for the state and local communities. ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Why buy Greenland? BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL CONTRIBUTORS

In appreciation of all of the hard working people of Winnebago County.

CELEBRATING LABOR DAY See you at the Parade! Monday, September 2, 2019 Walking with and Endorsed by Laborers Local 32

When we held our first Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fair in 2002 climate change was already a topic of interest with atmospheric CO2 at 375 ppm. Now at 410 ppm it is getting lots of visibility in the media. Much of it is focused on the damages associated with it but recently the associated economic opportunities such as Trump’s attempt to buy Greenland are becoming more obvious. In 1969 we participated in a National Science Foundation course covering the substantial presence of oil, natural gas and mineral resources in the Arctic and the challenge of getting it to market. But little was said regarding how climate change could facilitate the exploitation of Arctic resources. As the ice melts two major shipping routes will simplify resource access. One is the Northwest Passage along the Canadian border and the other is the Northern Sea Route along the Russian coast. In a discussion with us in Iceland in 2003, a leading political figure looked forward to the economic benefits to his country from opening the Northwest Passage. He felt it would oset the losses if the cod fishery collapsed or if rising levels of mercury in the ocean from the dramatic rise in coal burning in China adversely impacted the cod market. Currently a decline in Iceland’s cod fishery is underway. Given all the resources existing in the Arctic and the melting of sea ice it is not surprising that the current administration expressed an interest in buying Greenland and that Denmark declined the oer. A Saturday morning interview on BBC revealed what Denmark already knows about the resource potential of the country. They have a productive fish and prawn resource in the North Atlantic. Oil and gas are found there as are rare minerals used in solar, wind, batteries and electric vehicles. The fine muds deposited from the melting glaciers are envisioned as serving to restore depleted tropical soils. Sand and gravel exist in pure piles for use in making concrete essential to building structures to protect coast lines threatened by rising sea levels and intense storms. Rich iron

ore deposits are known along with gold deposits. The U.S already has a military presence in the area which could serve as a point from which access to the Northwest Passage could be controlled. Business as usual would be well served by utilizing the existing resources but climate change would intensify. The impacts of global warming in the north are occurring twice as fast as those in the rest of the world as revealed in a recent Canadian federal government report. Many of the impacts are likely to be irreversible. The country’s annual average temperature is up by 1.7°C or 3°F since 1948 and in northern Canada it is up 2.3°C or 4.05°F .The rising temperatures will accelerate the melting of ice. The race for Arctic resources does not bode well for the health of the planet or human wellbeing. As climate change accelerates the temperature of the earth could reach a tipping point which would produce higher temperatures than the earth has experienced in the past 1.2 million years. A research report “Trajectories of the Earth System in the Anthropocene” warns society is on a “Hothouse Earth” pathway which will lead serious disruptions to ecosystems, society and economies. To avoid such a future collective action is seen as essential. The economic case for securing more oil and gas from the Arctic or elsewhere is also challenged in a study entitled Wells, Wires and Wheels by Mark Lewis of the BNP Paribas, an asset management firm. It concludes that wind and solar combined with electric vehicles can deliver 3 to 4 times more useful energy than diesel and 6 to 7 times more useful energy than gasoline with oil at $60/bbl. Eventually gas would need to sell at $10 to $12/barrel to compete with electric vehicles. The competition from electric vehicles could make 40% of today’s global oil demand economically uncompetitive when wind, solar, batteries and EVs reach a sucient global scale. Interest in buying Greenland fits well with the existing global business model. But investing in climate solutions could prove to be a far better investment for society and the oil and gas industry facing stranded assets.

Mr. Green Car

Toyota Prius sales down By Allen Penticoff Columnist

Since its introduction in December 1997 (yes, over 20 years ago), the Toyota Prius has seen many changes in the four generations of its development - and many offspring that are either variations on the Prius theme - such as the smaller Prius C and the larger Prius V, but also now there are several Toyota models that are essentially using the Prius drive system in them as well. This and other factors have brought the once ever-climbing sales figures of your average Prius into decline. But it’s not dead yet. Those U.S. sales figures peaked at 236,655 in 2012. As of 2017 U.S. sales were down to 108,661 across all four models. Although, since its introduction, several million Priuses have been sold worldwide. Nowadays, the plug-in Prius Prime, with EV mode range of 25-miles, accounts for about 20 percent of Prius sales. There is a new AWD version of the Prius out - the Prius

AWD-e, but more on this in a bit. There are five factors that have caused the decline in Prius sales. One: gas is cheap relative to our other living costs. Folks are less inclined to buy highly efficient vehicles just to save on the cost of fuel. Two: The average miles per gallon ratings are up on the entire fleet of vehicles available to consumers - making buying a Prius less necessary to get good gas mileage. Three: There are a ton of other hybrids out there in the market, a hybrid is no longer a unique vehicle. Also, pure electric vehicles are definitely stealing away the kind of folks who would otherwise buy a high efficiency vehicle. Four: Many consider the latest rendition of Prius styling to be a flop. It’s just too weird for most folks. Five: Toyota’s hybridization of their small RAV4 SUV and the long established Corolla models is cannibalizing Prius sales too. I’ll expound on point five here a bit. SUVs are all the rage among consumers. Sedans are in decline. Moving the Prius

hybrid drive system to the RAV4 makes sense from the standpoint of sales. Buyers like its versatility, all-weather capabilities and it still manages 39 mpg without the need for charging. Similarly, Toyota has dusted off the Corolla model (been around since 1966), given it better styling, power, appointments and advertised it to the youth market. Giving the Corolla hybrid the Prius’ drive system has boosted its average mpg rating to 50. A comfier car with a more subtle style - it is a favorite among the fuel conserving public. The Toyota Camry hybrid also eats away at Prius sales, as do the Toyota based Lexus hybrids. In trying to keep the Prius line alive Toyota has introduced all-wheel-drive (AWD) to the Prius package. With a modest $2,000 option and a small 2 mpg efficiency penalty, the buyer can get some help moving during snowy conditions. Without consuming much space or adding much weight, they install a 7-horsepower electric motor to drive the rear wheels during low

35

traction conditions. The motor will operate continuously up to 3 mph and partially up to 43 mph - whereupon it will disengage. The whole point is to help get out of your snowy driveway or across an unplowed parking lot, not to go four-wheeling in the mountains. Toyota recommends that owners leave the fuel-efficient low-rolling resistance tires on for winter - as winter tires tend to upset the designed traction control feature and cause the front tires to dig in. The Toyota Prius AWD-e attains an EPA rated 52 city and 48 highway mpg - making it a great commuter car for folks who live in northern states. With Toyota’s well-earned reputation for building solid reliable vehicles, the Prius line is still worth putting on your short list for fuel-efficient new car purchase particularly if you have reservations about going EV.

Terry Francona took one look at Cleveland’s all-black uniforms and turned into a fashionista. His review? Not good. “What’s the slogan, ‘Let the kids play’?” the Indians manager said. “Let the grownups look like morons.” That was a common view across the majors and social media on Players’ Weekend, when big leaguers wore uniforms designed to be fresh and fun, complete with nicknames on the back. But rather than a hit, the monochromatic schemes were mostly rated a big swing and miss. “It’s not our proudest moment rockin’ these all-white milkmen jerseys,” Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Saturday. Asked if he could compare them to anything he’s worn before, Roberts said: “It was probably an ugly sweater over the holidays.” New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone initially liked the concept. Then reality hit. “When I put the uniform on I felt a little silly,” he said. “I’m sure I would have felt that way if I had the white one on, too.” The Dodgers and Yankees traditionally wear two of the most classic uniforms in the majors. The Dodgers, in fact, asked Major League Baseball for permission to sport their regular uniforms for one game in this highly anticipated series at Dodger Stadium. Request denied. “The one thing I would say — you know, Dodgers-Yankees, I feel like it would be cool that . this isn’t necessarily the best weekend for us,” Boone said Friday. “I think having this matchup and to have them in their uniform and us in ours.” The Chicago Cubs went rogue on Friday to begin their series against Washington at Wrigley Field. This is the third season of Players’ Weekend and, according to an arrangement worked out this year between MLB and the players’ union, the home team could pick whether to wear all black or all white. There was one caveat — pitchers in white had to wear a black hat, to help hitters see the ball better.

Crossword & Sudoku

This week’s solutions, from Page 17.

Dressed in white, the Cubs decided on their own to go with blue hats, being a dark color to match starter Jon Lester’s black cap. “They got together and figured (for) uniformity we’d all wear the same hat. A solidarity kind of a move,” manager Joe Maddon said. Later, the Cubs were told by MLB to stick to the plan. “Listen, I get in so many tough spots when I demonstrate my feelings on certain things,” Maddon said. “I just don’t know. I’d just like to know who said this was a good idea. That’s the best way I can describe that. Just really awkward, very awkward. They’re getting enough heat. I don’t need to pile on.” Maddon offered his own suggestion. “My take on it is they should every team design their own Players’ Weekend uniform. That would be cool,” he said. “You style the Cubs uniforms, then it truly is Players’ Weekend,” he said. “I think you’d get a lot more interesting and better ... if you went that route.” NL batting leader Jeff McNeil of the New York Mets returned from the injured list Saturday and saw his jersey — with “Flying Squirrel” on the back — hanging in his locker at Citi Field. “It’s really white!” he said. “It’s fun, so I like it.” To others, those uniforms made players look like the Good Humor Man, or something from “Field of Dreams.” Chimed in Kristin Smoak, wife of Toronto first baseman Justin Smoak: “These uni’s are kind of the worst look I’ve ever seen,” she posted on Twitter. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said he enjoyed this opportunity each year where “the players get to show a little bit of flair and their personality,” adding, “I’m all for it.” But it also made things a bit more difficult with his Diamondbacks wearing black to play the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. “It was hard for me to look across the diamond and tell who is who. You can’t see the numbers or the names,” Lovullo said. “Maybe I’d ask for just a little bit more contrast for the names and numbers on the white uniforms.”

FOOTBALL

Once upon a time ... in Chicago BY ROBERT ZEGLINSKI CONTRIBUTOR

No one should be surprised at outward arrogance shown by the NFL. Since the Bears and Packers began as meat and cheese packing outlets in the early 20th century, the league has rarely taken a misstep in business ventures. That type of success tends to breed self-esteem past a healthy point of believing in one’s self, all the way to thinking everything you touch turns into gold by association. The NFL’s growth has proliferated into a beast of an American institution holding more influence over the population than most would care to admit. Over the course of the last decade, the No. 1 cultural monolith on this side of the Atlantic has raked in profits in the billions only matched by your favorite trust fund managers. The salary cap has increased by a lucrative $10 million every year since 2013. On paper and on its face, professional football is more popular than ever. It’s literally printing money it can comfortably back at the presses. It’s writing the checks and cashing them in its own bank, in its own gold reserves. The 100th NFL season being on the horizon made the charter franchise Bears the ideal host to celebrate the league’s evolution into the most elaborate supplier of breads and circuses ever. Juvenal would have been proud of their eorts. It also places the Bears on a pedestal for the 2019 season where they’ll receive attention on a national level even their Super Bowl shuing predecessors didn’t enjoy. The storylines for the first Bears team to be relevant when social media is an extra appendage for many people are boundless. From championship droughts and quarterback leaps, to vengeance for kicking woes’ past, the 2019 Bears have the burden of expectations and the weight of a city’s hopes resting on their shoulders.

Getting the monkey off Halas Hall’s back

It would take a tremendous amount of collective ineptitude for the Bears to broach upon the Cubs’ formerly traumatic 108-year championship drought. It would also mean the NFL would have to exist by the time humanity has colonized Mars, everyone’s finally using flying cars, and the absurdly wealthy have achieved immortality; the latter three of which all being far more realistic prospects by 2100. Even so, the Bears’ ongoing 33-year Super Bowl winless drought is something to behold for a franchise that used to stack NFL titles in sets of triplets once upon a time. Every other legacy professional football team (the Giants, Packers, and Steelers) has had the pleasure of hoisting a Lombardi trophy this century. The only NFL teams with longer championship droughts than the Bears are modern expansion teams who have

never been the last team standing like the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, and long-existing hapless organizations such as the Lions. Every year the Bears’ failure to instill a sense of pride back in the city where professional football was first organized continues, is another year of angst cresting past the boiling point. The water’s already broken and clogged the stove. The water’s evaporated entirely. It’s about minimizing the damage to the rest of the oven now. If Matt Nagy’s Bears headlined by transcendent talents like Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, and Eddie Jackson can’t win a championship in the next two years, that drought will likely extend well past four decades. Then the real frustration begins.

Trubisky, the Favorite Son

Playing quarterback in Chicago has been compared to playing shortstop for the New York Yankees, playing center for the Los Angeles Lakers. Playing these specific positions in these cities carries more inherent localized pressure than any other sporting destination in the Western hemisphere. However, a crucial distinction has to be made: the Yankees and Lakers have a history of consistent success at shortstop and center. No one alive with their memory and motor functions intact remembers the last time the Bears had an All-Pro face-of-the-league quarterback. (Sid Luckman is more bar trivia question than someone to rest your laurels on.) Unlike the Lakers and Yankees, who have a set standard of great play at center and shortstop, the Bears, historically, don’t know what a great quarterback looks like unless he’s playing for a division rival three hours up north. The only reason Mitchell Trubisky receives as much attention as he does – to the positive and negative extremes – is because he’s a No. 2 overall pick featuring for the Bears. And because he represents the Bears’ good faith attempt at finding a legitimate franchise quarterback since the last time their foil in the Packers didn’t have their own answer under center. Trubisky represents Chicago’s best bid to shed itself of a thorough defensive identity marked by bruised broad shoulders in decades. If he can’t ascend to legitimate franchise quarterback play this season, let alone a special generational passer to be marketed league-wide, it boggles the mind as to when the Bears will have such a quarterback. Hope erodes faster than goodwill lasts. The Bears aneed Trubisky to take a marked step in improvement if they’re going to be playing in Miami in the early winter. The NFL’s No. 1 reigning defense aside, a cornucopia of oensive talent needs Trubisky to take on more of the oensive burden if the Bears are to make any noise past the month of December. His reputation

can’t continue to subsist purely on the idea of being a top pick at the most important football position alongside the Bears’ actual game-changers on defense. If Nagy’s bunch is to build on a 12-win division championship season, Trubisky has to be one of those field-tilters. It’s doubtful a city that doesn’t know what a good quarterback looks like accepts anything less.

Nagy’s kicking demons

By now, the Bears’ coach’s contentious war with Kicker A, Kicker B, and himself has been well-documented. He’s treated rookies and amateurs like world-class golfers at Augusta. He’s replayed the most painful play of the most painful playo loss the Bears have suered in their six postseason appearances since the early 1990s over and over. Through a nonsensical forthright honesty, he’s openly and publicly admitted that he still thinks about Moby Parkey’s ill-fated 43-yard attempt from last January any time one of his active kickers lines up from a similar distance. The last time a reigning Coach of the Year, someone as initially successful in their profession as Nagy, was this consumed by their ostensible demons, they screamed in terror to tear up the floorboards because the sound of a beating heart drove them mad. They dove in after a malevolent

mind-controlling ring into the fires of Mount Doom. They then led an extensive naval expedition after a leviathan who ate their leg. Nagy’s still quite evidently chasing Moby Parkey. He’ll be damned if his thirst for vengeance isn’t quenched by the end of this calendar year. A harmful obsession with one unpredictable position aside, it’d be better for the Bears if Nagy learned to keep his fears and insecurities over Chicago’s instability at kicker to himself. The Bears have too many other potential issues, pitfalls, and pending battles with other NFC heavyweights to be concerned with how their coach demands retribution from his kicker. The psyche of a confident team ready to break through is already fragile enough. Nagy is too smart, too patient of a progressive-thinking coach to weigh himself and his players down from his other managing responsibilities by overthinking a position that either strikes the right chord or doesn’t. There will come a time when the Bears need house favorite leg Eddy Pineiro to keep their season alive in the coming months. The only time anyone on the Bears – Nagy included – should think about the stratospheric stress of that moment, is when it arrives. Robert is a writer, editor, and producer.
