Local youth created a mural and engaged in hands-on art programming at the Rockford Art Museum last week, in collaboration with John Brantley’s Neighborhood Networking Program. On Thursday and Friday, 50 youth received a special guided gallery walk of the current exhibition Sonic Disruptions, a personal box of art materials to continue art-making at home, and free transportation. On Friday, 5th to 8th graders also got the chance to create a mural with local artist, Jenny Mathews. “We have such a rich tapestry of passionate artists in this city. Programs like this enable us to help inspire and shape the future generation of art makers and lovers in Rockford. Our hope is to give youth an outlet to share and process what’s going on in this important phase of life – and to realize that art is so much more than a framed picture on a wall,” said Rockford Art Museum Executive Director/ Curator Carrie Johnson. This programming is sponsored by the “Our Journey” micro-grant program, a partnership with Rockford Art Deli’s #HereForGoodRKFD campaign, the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and Rockford Art Arts Council and in-kind donations are provided by BLICK art materials. Rockford Art Museum reopened on July 6, with smaller groups, new health and safety protocols in place—and free admission through the end of the year.
